Double the fun as locals and visitors alike snap up Killarney Magazine

Twins Laura and Sarah Murphy, Firies, enjoy the new Killarney Magazine. PICTURE: SALLY MACMONAGLE

Kerry’s young football aces put smiles on faces WELL, an air of celebration has ushered us into the August bank holiday weekend with the Kerry ladies under-16 A team being crowned All-Ireland champions on Wednesday. A hero’s welcome awaited them in Killorglin last night. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to the Kerry senior and minor All-Ireland quarter-finals on Sunday and wishing the players and management every success against Clare and Derry respectively. Also on a sporting theme, the Killarney Athletic/Killarney Credit Union seven-a-side tourna-

ment drew to an exciting close on Wednesday; see our coverage on pages 22 and 24. On Monday, Killarney’s Market Cross will be alive with the sound of music in aid of the South Kerry branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland and the senior citizens of Killarney. Organisers are urging all to stop by and tune in at any stage from 11am to 6pm to support the cause and join the fun. Enjoy your favourite Friday read and the August bank holiday weekend! TWINS Laura and Sarah Murphy were the fitting choice to launch the new Killarney Magazine this week as the publication is proving a double success, appealing to both locals and visitors alike. The team at Killarney Advertiser is delighted to present readers in Killarney and from across the globe with what is the town’s first premium tourist publication. A riveting read, this glossy, free magazine showcases our town to dazzling effect and is a pageturningly good read, sharing as it does sought-after insider knowledge and hidden gems. “We noticed that there was no premium visitor magazine that captured the uniqueness of the our beautiful town. It is very much of Killarney featuring local writers, photographers and designers. Feedback has been amazing since we published last week,” said Aidan Quirke, business development manager of Killarney Advertiser and Killarney Magazine. “We are planning for next season’s publication already.” Killarney Magazine offers a wonderful trip back in time thanks to illuminating pieces that history buffs will enjoy (for instance, Breda

Joy’s wonderful overview of the history of Muckross House). But it is also something that will help you keep your finger on the pulse with insider tips and information on making the most of a visit to Killarney. Leaf through the colourful pages to be wowed by or reminded of the attractions that have earned Killarney its enviable status as Ireland’s preeminent tourist destination. We hope we will also tempt you to veer off the beaten track to make your experience of our town and it surrounds your very own. A wonderful resource for the traveller and a handy reference guide for local residents, Killarney Magazine emerged from a pool of local talent and it features leading writers from what is a worldrenowned literary and cultural hotbed. The magazine, designed by Damien Switzer, has been distributed throughout Killarney, including hotels, the tourist office and a host of visitor attractions. You can also check out its website at http://www.killarneymagazine. com

Warning about mobile phone scam and Wi-Fi hacking GARDAÍ in Kerry are warning the public of a mobile phone scam involving calls from an international number with the prefix 0025 44. They last issued a warning about calls from this number on June 14, when they highlighted how people were receiving a muffled call from the number from an apparently distressed woman looking for help. If you call this number back, you will be charged. “It is a scam and will clear your credit if you ring it back,” said a spokesperson. Now the community has been alerted to the fact that the number is active again and caution is urged with Gardaí stressing that you should not ring back. In addition the alarm has been raised about how Gmail accounts are being hacked in public Wi-Fi areas.

Even a brief chat with John or Olivia sheds new light on any cleaning problem you my have and they are as interesting as they are informative when sharing the tricks of the trade in their helpful manner. “I have taken my experience through the years and through the advice and products on hand in the shop, the customers will benefit, as I have seen what works and what doesn’t work,” said John. Watch this space as John will be sharing insider tips and tricks every week in Killarney Advertiser. Meanwhile, at the launch on August 13, there will be a draw for a professional vacuum cleaner.

NOT only have the team at Advanced Cleaning a wealth of advice to offer you, but its owners John and Olivia O’Keeffe have also developed their own line of professional cleaning products and tools. A visit to the Advanced Cleaning Supplies shop on New Street is a real must just to see what ingenious products and tools it stocks to help make your life easy and ensure your home looks its sparkling best. In fact, if it doesn’t leave you in the mood for a spot of belated spring clean, we really don’t know what will! The beautifully stocked shelves are bursting with good ideas. “These are professional products and they help us pass on some of our trade secrets!” said John. In addition, Advanced Cleaning Supplies also retails many tools that will make life easier, from its own line of vacuum cleaners and window cleaning equipment to specialised floor cloths. A real piece de resistance is the new floor cloths or “glass” cloths. This is a simple waffle cloth, but it delivers incredible results.

“The cloth works with water and doesn’t require the use of chemicals,” said John. “You can simply pop it in the washing machine when you are finished and so you don’t have to have a dirty mop lying around.” Advanced Cleaning Supplies also offers a full eco-friendly “bio” cleaning range and encourages the use of effective cleaning products that won’t harm your floors and property or the environment. “What we use is tried and tested ourselves over the years,” said John.

If you rent out part of your home as residential accommodation, the income you earn is exempt from tax, provided the total paid by the tenant(s) is not more than €12,000 in a tax year and you satisfy the qualifying conditions. This is called renta-room relief. It applies to accommodation in your home – which can include a self-contained unit such as a basement flat or a converted garage. It does not apply to rooms that are not attached to your home and it does not apply to rent paid by your child. You must live in your home as your sole or main residence during the tax year for which you are claiming the relief and the room(s) must be used as residential accommodation. For example, you can claim the relief if you are renting a room to a student for the academic year, but not if you are taking in short-term guests. If you rent a room in your home, residential tenancies legislation does not apply. So, if you are only renting out a room, you do not have to register as a landlord with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB), provide a rent book to the tenant or ensure that the accommodation meets any minimum physical standards. However, if you rent out a self-contained unit such as a basement flat, the legislation does apply. The gross income you get cannot be more than €12,000 in a tax year. This includes sums that the tenant pays to you for food, utilities, laundry or similar goods and services. When you are working out whether the gross income is more than this limit, you cannot deduct any costs that you incurred in earning that income. If your income from rent and other services is over the limit, the entire income (not just the amount over the limit) is taxable. If you qualify for rent-a-room relief, the income is not liable to PRSI, the Universal Social Charge or income tax. Claiming rent-a-room relief does not affect your mortgage interest relief or your exemption from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) if you sell your home. You do not have to claim rent-a-room relief as it applies automatically. However, if you are submitting an annual tax return you must record the amount of the exempt income on the return. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Killarney gets a close shave FROM postmen to firefighters and from hurlers to footballers….a big-hearted troupe of Killarney folk proved keen to submit their locks to the scissors and razor on Friday. And an appreciative crowd turned out to support them at Shave for Amy at the K-Town Bar which was held to generate funds to help Killarney youngster Amy O’Connor. The event, which was staged in association with Kerry Fire & Rescue, An Post, Dr Crokes GAA Club, K-Town Bar, Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty and White Bridge Manor Residents, saw volunteers unveil a whole new look on the night by having their crowning glory or beards shaved. Shave for Amy was organised to help Amy, nine, daughter of Brendan

Brendan O'Connor, centre, father of Amy O'Connor, with Martin O'Grady, who purchased a Celtic and Ireland jersey and his father Cllr Donal Grady, who purchased Saoirse Ronan's dress and TD Michael Healy Rae's cap.

and Triona and sister to Cian, who is suffering from a serious illness and is travelling regularly to Dublin for treatment. “The neighbours, friends, work and sporting colleagues want to help with the financial burden this can cause for the family,” said Martin O’Grady of Killarney Fire Service on behalf of the organisers. The charity auction proved a huge success, with Martin purchasing a Celtic and Ireland jersey and his father Cllr Donal Grady successfully bidding for actor Saoirse Ronan's dress and TD Michael Healy Rae's cap. Calling all golfers to swing out for a good cause OLYMPIAN golfer Michael O’Leary joined forces on the fairways with a host of fellow golfers to highlight an upcoming classic taking place at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. Michael ‘Seve’ O’Leary is a silver medallist in the Special Olympics World Games and he will be one of a four-person team teeing up on Friday, August 5, in aid of St John of God Kerry Services including St Mary of the Angels, Beaufort. All are welcome to join the classic on that date, at Mahony’s Point, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. “St John of God Kerry Services provides residential, day service and respite care to 294 adults and children across Kerry,” said a spokeswoman. “We provide services in Beaufort, Tralee, Killarney, Kenmare, Caherciveen, Killorglin, Dingle, Castleisland and Listowel.” Admission for teams of four is €200. “All support would be very much valued and appreciated in the form of teams, tee boxes sponsorship or spot prizes. All proceeds are for the benefit of services in Kerry,” added the spokeswoman. “Fundraising is crucial to allow us to continue to provide this level of service across the county, therefore your support for this event would be very much valued. Please contact Helen on 087-1338702 to book a tee time.”

Bank holiday busking at Market Cross KILLARNEY’S Market Cross is always alive with the sound of music at this time of year but especially every August bank holiday Monday. Some 28 years ago a troupe of local musicians decided to strike up at the town centre location and so began a tuneful tradition. “They were looking to try and help fundraise for the South Kerry branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland and the senior citizens of Killarney,” said organiser Ray O’Callaghan, of MS South Kerry. “It grew year on year and it has raised thousands for both these worthwhile causes and makes the lives of our members and their families a bit easier.” This coming bank holiday Monday, August 1, the annual charity busking event will unfold from 11am to 6pm. “Local musicians are giving up their free time for the day in aid of MS South Kerry and Senior Citizens Killarney,” said Ray. “Please join us for fun-filled day of music and song.”

Sean Hanly, Liam Healy, Damian McCarthy, Mike O'Sullivan, Helen O'Connor, Angie Kissane, Brendan Brosnan, Denis Guerin and Michael O'Leary launch the golf classic which takes place on Friday, August 5, at Mahony's Point, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. PICTURE: DYLAN CLIFFORD

GARDAÍ are trying to contact family members of a climber who tragically fell to his death on Carrantuohill on Saturday. The man’s body was recovered after Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) was alerted by a group of walkers. The walkers spotted what appeared to be someone falling at the northern face of the peak at around 2pm and promptly contacted the recue team, which joined forces with the Shannon-based Coastguard helicopter. The helicopter identified where the fallen walker was, but was unable to reach him. “The rescue team met the helicopter at the Hag’s Glen where, over a couple of flights, team members and equipment were transferred by helicopter to nearer where the man had fallen,” Allan Wallace of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team told the Killarney Advertiser. After technical climbing, involving ropes, the team reached the spot. The man’s body was stretchered off the cliff and KMRT met Gardaí at 9pm on Saturday night. There have been a number of serious falls on the descent from Carrantuohill in the last month, added the KMRT spokesman, urging caution on the peak. Valentia Coastguard co-ordinated the search and recovery operation by the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and the Shannonbased Coastguard helicopter. The deceased Tipperary man, whose name is not being released until all family members were contacted, was reported to have been an experienced climber. Aged in his 60s, the man did not have ID on him when he fell, which delayed the identification process, with a dental examination being required.

Killarney Credit Union advises on back to school planning “AVOID moneylenders, shop around and plan a budget.” That’s the key advice from Killarney Credit Union when it comes to addressing backto-school costs. Research undertaken in June 2016 by the Irish League of Credit Union indicated that back-to-school costs negatively impact 26% of household bill payments with 13% of parents saying they will have to sacrifice spending on food to cover these costs. Helen Courtney Power, business development officer with Killarney

Credit Union, said: “We are very aware of the increased costs that families are facing when returning children to school after the holidays, we recommend that you plan early by making out a budget, shopping for deals in local retailers and avoid door step credit at all costs. “We offer personal micro credit loans for smaller amounts which can be repaid through the household budget scheme or you can also look at our standard education loans for members.”

Garda warning about green Toyota minibus GARDAÍ in Killarney have urged the public to be on the lookout for a green Toyota Minibus. The vehicle has a registration featuring 00D. If you have any information on the above contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222.

Our All-Ireland champions take a bow

APPLAUSE rang out for Kerry’s All-Ireland champions at a grand homecoming yesterday in Killorglin. The ladies All-Ireland Under-16 A Championship heroines, led by the Killorglin and District Pipe Band, were given a rapturous welcome as they paraded through the town. The sharpshooting Kerry ladies reigned supreme in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, on Wednesday evening as they took the spoils in their showdown with Dublin in the exciting final. At half-time, Dublin faced an uphill battle at McDonagh Park as Kerry was in full control, leading Kerry 2-13, Dublin 0-5. Kerry triumphed at fulltime on an impressive scoreline of Kerry 3-21, Dublin 0-10. Kerry’s goals were by Hannah O’Donoghue, Brid Ryan and Aoife O’Callaghan (penalty). This was a well-played game by both teams and it was Fiadhna Tangney who won the coveted player of the match title. “You have done your whole county proud and you family as well,” said spokesperson for Kerry Ladies GAA. “I would also like to thank all the parents and supporters who have travelled, we have gotten a great amount of support from all of you all year.”

Claire and Mark celebrate big day in style

EDDING bells rang out in Killarney for Claire Brosnan and Mark Francis on Saturday. Claire, from Port Road, and Killorglin native Mark exchanged vows in the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa, in a ceremony led by Fr Tom Looney and Fr Niall Howard. The bride’s sister Karen Brosnan and groom’s sister Samantha Francis joined forces in the role of bridesmaids while Mark’s brothers Christy and Anthony Francis were best man and groomsman respectively. The couple’s son Adam Francis enjoyed the limelight as pageboy, as did Mark’s niece Sarah Boyne, who took on flower-girl duties. Helping lead the celebrations were the bride’s parents Marguerite and Gerard Brosnan and the groom’s mother and father Mary and Christopher Francis. Friends and family travelled from across Ireland the globe, including from Australia, Sweden and England, for the celebration, with the reception taking place in

The Gleneagle Hotel. “The management and staff were amazing, they pulled out all the stops!” said Claire. Killarney photographer Sally MacMonagle captured the big day on camera and the bride looked stunning in a Maggie Sottero dress. Claire and Mark first met 12 years ago through mutual friends in Killorglin. Planning the wedding proved no problem as the couple had plenty of help. “I had amazing wedding planners in my mom, dad and sister!” said Clare. “They did so much for me!” On Sunday, the celebrations continued at the Old Killarney Inn, with Killarney singer Kieran Healy entertaining all present. The newlyweds, who reside in Perth, enjoyed a weekend away in Adare and will return to Australia next week. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A CAR ACCIDENT By John Healy JP Healy & Co Insurances ltd

Being involved in a car accident can be a traumatic experience. While vehicle damage can be repaired or replaced the health and well being of all passengers should be paramount. Here are some pointers if you are in this position • Stay calm and try to assess any casualties • Do not move the injured • Call emergency services • Call the Gardai before you move any vehicles • Swap the following details with the other party, Name, Address and phone numbers, Registration numbers, Insurance policy numbers (check the insurance disc) and Licence numbers • If a Garda attends the scene make sure you record his name and barracks • Note if there are any witnesses and record their names and numbers • Take photos of the area with your phone (if not available try to write it down) note where the cars ended up and their position on the road, the weather conditions & visibility, and number/ages of passengers in all vehicles. • Do not discuss liability at the scene of the accident. You are only obliged to discuss this with a Garda or your insurers. Road traffic act law is a complex area and liability is best left to your insurers to determine. • Contact your Broker or Insurer as soon as you can Some policies can arrange courtesy cars and/or a tow-in service. • If you are involved in an accident with a visiting motorist from outside the country, report the accident to your insurance company and also to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland, 3/4 South Frederick Street, Dublin 2. Crossing finish line in world’s most beautiful road race

Louise Devaney and Eddie O'Sullivan. PICTURE: TREVOR O'DONOGHUE

SOME 2,000 intrepid runners and walkers got off to an early start on Saturday to compete in what organisers promised to be the “world’s most beautiful road race”, in the form of the Run Killarney event. Molls Gap provided a misty start line for the half marathon which got under way at 8.30am. “Competitors enjoyed stunning views of the Lakes of Killarney and the unspoiled beauty of the Park,” said spokeswoman Lisa Daly of organiser Elite Event Management. In the half marathon the first male to finish was Niall Shanahan (Cork) who set a new course record of 1 hour 13 minutes 39 seconds. In second place was Christopher Murnane (Cork), 1 hour 15 minutes 49 seconds and finishing third was Donal White (Kerry Crusaders) 1 hour 16 minutes 2 seconds. The first female home in the half marathon was Teresa Diaz (Spain) 1 hour 24 minutes 35 seconds followed closely by local lady Alison Kirwan (Star of the Laune AC) 1 hour 26 minutes 08 seconds and Deirdre Nagle (Eagle AC) 1 hour 26 minutes 19 seconds. The weather brightened up for the start of the 10k race at 10am. Runners from local athletics clubs An Riocht and Star of the Laune were among the big winners on the day. First across the line in the 10k event was Donal O’Callaghan in 33 minutes 59 seconds, followed closely by the first female Siobhan Daly (Gneeveguilla AC) 41 minutes 26 seconds. “The Gleneagle Hotel was the centre of activity where competitors were treated to a well-earned massage, Japanese hot tubs, custom made medals and hot food at the finish line. Spectators and participants basked in the summer sunshine at the finish area,” said Lisa. Now in its seventh year the event attracted competitors from all over Ireland and international athletes from America, Austria, Japan, France and the UK. Event organiser Oliver Kirwan said: “Sporting events in Killarney are becoming increasingly popular and plans are under way for an even bigger event in 2017. Events of this size are not possible without huge support of all the volunteers, Killarney Rugby Club, Killarney AC, Killarney town council, Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the Civil Defence and the Killarney National Parks & Wildlife Service.”

health&lifestyle UNIVERSAL CONTOUR BODY WRAP Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on how you can detox this bank holiday weekend with the award-winning Universal Contour Wrap

THE Universal Contour Wrap is a superb natural therapy, devoloped in America by Dr Richard Strem, based on extensive research into the beneficial minerals used in traditional spa remedies from many parts of the world.

So, how many inches can I expect to lose? Obviously the number of inches lost varies from person to person – and it's not always dependent on how many inches you have to lose. A reported loss of a massive 18 inches on a first wrap was the most successful, but you are guaranteed a loss of at least six inches. Will I put the inches back on as soon as I have a drink? No, definitely not. That was the story with the old type of body wrap products, which depended on inducing rapid water-loss or on the use of vigorous exercise. Clients who are treated with the Universal Contour

Wrap™ are actively encouraged to drink water, both after treatment and in the weeks following.

So I won't actually lose weight having a Contour Wrap? As it is toxins rather than fat that are being removed, any actual weight loss will be minimal. The Universal Contour Wrap™ is an inch loss rather than a weight loss treatment – you will see the change in your post-wrap shape and feel it in your clothes.

Does the Universal Contour Wrap improve the appearance of cellulite? Yes it does – the appearance of cellulite is improved by the removal of toxins from between the fat cells and the stimulation of the lymphatic system brought about by the Contour Wrap and by the skin tightening effect which reduces visible dimpling. For further information call Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 0646632966.

DID YOU KNOW THAT 27 PEOPLE DIE OF HEART ATTACK IN IRELAND EVERY DAY?

HEARTWAVE CARDIO SCREENING is returning to Kerry with the revolutionary Bpro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The Bpro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP – blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a health stats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a 20% discount for groups of 12 or more people such as sports clubs and business screenings. Heartfelt Cardio Screening will bring the Bpro to the following venues in Kerry over the next few weeks: Thursday, August 4, at The Malton Hotel, Killarney; Wednesday, August 10, at the Listowel Arms Hotel; and Thursday, August 11, Brook Lane Hotel, Kenmare Appointments are essential and are available from 10.45am until late. Grace Notes The singing lesson

Music and singing teacher Grace Foley on whether anyone can learn to sing

AS A singing teacher I am often asked the question “Can you teach anyone to sing?”. I have always found it hard to come up with a definite and direct response to this question and I think I have discovered why. Of course, there are obvious elements that need to be taken into account when answering the question, does the student suffer from being tone deaf? Can they feel a basic pulse? Can they match a given pitch? And, of course, do they have a natural talent? These are the obvious questions but those are not the

questions I am most interested in asking. In fact, despite common misconception, your first lesson with me will not begin with me asking you to sing (which most people are very relieved to discover!). It will in fact begin with me asking one very simple question: “Why would you like to do singing lessons?” I find that the answers can vary a great deal between different people and different age brackets. Of course some little children do not choose to come themselves but most of the time

when I ask them the question they simply respond: “Because I love singing!” When it comes to adults I find there is often something much deeper going on. So many times I have been sat opposite an adult who is terrified to be in this vulnerable position and yet the answer is often the same across the board: "Because I have always loved singing." Can I teach anyone to sing? The answer is no. I can help my students embrace music and go on this journey with them. People will sing, and actually cannot stop themselves from doing it, if they love it, but that cannot be taught. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 12:13-21: “One’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions,” said Jesus. What have you found by experience to be more important in life than possessions? What brought this home to you? “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed.” Perhaps you have seen how greed can lead to trouble in public life, in family life, and in the personal life of individuals. What has helped you to guard against greed? What benefits have you experienced when you were less greedy? The message of the parable could be summed up in saying ‘If you want to give God a laugh, tell him your plans’. Life takes many twists and turns we do not anticipate. When have you found that you have had to change your plans because of unexpected circumstances? What has helped you to be flexible and resourceful at such times? John Byrne, OSA

BUILDING BIGGER BARNS

THERE is a lot of pressure these days to upgrade. Phone companies offer special incentives if we upgrade to the latest smartphone, while car dealers are constantly trying to convince us to trade in our older car for a brand new model. And it wasn’t so long ago that all the talk was about buying a starter home or getting on the property ladder. The idea is that we can always go bigger and do better for ourselves. If we think about it, most of us will admit we have more than we need to get by, but there is still a drive to acquire more “stuff”. The rich man in today’s parable was busying himself with upgrading. Faced with a lack of sufficient space to store all his crop and his goods, he decided to build bigger barns. Satisfied, he then sat back to enjoy the finer things in life, to “eat, drink, have a good time”. But Jesus offers a gentle reminder that, really, these are not the thing that matter. After all, we can’t take any of these treasures with us. Our farmer friend had forgotten to focus on the more important things in life – he had stored up riches on earth instead of focusing on making himself “rich in the sight of God”. What treasures are important to us? Tríona Doherty

Most parents have to deal occasionally with fighting children. One child has stolen the other’s toy, so the parent has to arbitrate. Parents learn to intervene in such a way that all of life will not be spent supplying such judgments. They hope their children will learn that it’s usually easier to sort things out instead of relying on another authority to do it. The aggrieved brother in this Gospel had evidently never learned this lesson, so he comes to a figure of authority to sort things for him. Jesus, the wise master, refuses to be drawn in. Instead, he issues a ruling that might apply to each brother: Beware of avarice, there’s no security in possessions. I wonder what happened to the complaining brother. Did he seek another authority who might give a more favourable judgment? Or did he listen, take Jesus’ words to heart and follow? Jesus, help me to be content with my life. Help me to trust in your loving care, every step of the way. Fr Bernard Cotter

Hallways After your front door, your hallway is the first part of your home that you see when you get home and it is the first interior you present to your guests. Too often, hallways are relegated to becoming thoroughfares where coats, shoes, schoolbags and gym gear are dumped and if we finally get a chance to clear that clutter we don't put a lot of thought into their decoration. The right paint colour or wallpaper can brighten and lift the darkest or narrowest of spaces. Take a look at our "Off the Wall" feature to see what our colour experts recommend for your hallway. For instance, enliven your floor with a vibrant rug or runner or use the walls to display an art collection (bought or

homemade). You could consider framing some kids’ art or splashing out on a painting you always wanted – you will see it every time you walk in the door and will lift your spirits! If your hallway is on the small side, choose a mirror to reflect some light, and it's always useful to do the Coco C h a n e l check in the morning! Hallways receive a daily bashing if you have kids so do consider hardwearing tiles or wall panels. I have wooden panelling in my hallway and I've found it much more hardwearing than just paint – a wipe of a cloth and it's as good as new! We've found some beautiful halls and corridor design ideas to inspire you….

Exclusive end-of-season opportunities at Hal-Lou HERE’S an unrivalled opportunity to snap up an exclusive piece for your home. Hal-Lou Furnishings is hosting its eagerly anticipated shop display clearance as it makes way for new collections. We had a sneak preview of the unique and covetable items on offer. Check out the luxurious velvet sofas, such as the moss green sofa and the purple chaise longue. These will add class to any interior. Not only that but try the Norwegian Healthcare highback sofa for size (bottom right) which will boost your sitting posture as well as being an excellent addition to your home. Gardening Up front A FRONT garden can make your home more welcoming. Your front garden is the first thing visitors see. Yet, while many people lavish time and money on their back gardens, front gardens are often dull and unimaginative. With a little planning and some expert advice, however, it's easy to create a front garden that is attractive, welcoming and easy to maintain. If you're short of time, you want it to be low maintenance. It's true that the demands of low maintenance have been used as an excuse for all sorts of horrors, such as ugly concrete paving and thickets of dwarf conifers. But if you spend time getting the structure and design right, you can have a beautiful and imaginatively planted front garden which really does require little weeding and minimal upkeep. The trick is to get it right at the very start, if you're living in a town you want to use the front garden to park the car, but you also want it to look nice, with as little effort as possible. 'The layout has to be practical, but your front garden can also provide a welcome home each day from work. An attractive front garden can lift your spirits, give pleasing views from the house, increase the kerb appeal, and add to the property's value. The width of paths and drives is critical; a path should be at least 1.2m wide, and a drive 3.5m. If they aren't large enough it becomes frustrating, and a pit of a top gear moment every time you have to park your car. Keeping it simple and adding some pots for colour (which can be changed seasonally) gives maximum effect for a little effort agapanthus is a great summer plant and the flowers have a great presence.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News +

Should wolf-whistling be classified as a crime? SNIGGERS tend to greet headlines about wolf-whistling and whether it should be classified as a crime. In the past fortnight, sections of the media seized on the specific example of wolfwhistling when a police force in the UK (Nottinghamshire) expanded its definition of hate crime to include misogyny and harassment of women. But wolf-whistling in particular is not a major point of focus for the women’s organisation that spearheaded this collaboration with local police. And coverage and sensationalist headlines in the wake of the campaign have in effect ridiculed both the issue and the action taken to tackle it. Speaking to the Guardian, Melanie Jeffs, centre manager at Nottingham Women’s Centre, said: “It’s a real shame that the serious impact this has on women is being completely ignored and boiled down to something trivial. It is an attempt to turn it back on to the victim and suggest she has an attitude problem. When actually what women are saying to us is, ‘This is affecting our ability to go out and live our lives’.” The definition of a hate crime is one motivated by hostility or prejudice towards any aspect of a person’s identity. Nottinghamshire police made it clear that this was not a sudden change in the law, and did not mean that behaviour such as wolf-whistling would be recategorised as a criminal offence, stating: “A hate crime is simply any incident, which may or may not be deemed as a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hatred.” Wolf-whistles are regarded as a benign reminder that women should expect to have their appearance judged and commented on by men – that their bodies in public places are there for male enjoyment. But the toleration of minor sexist incidents leads to normalising unacceptable behaviour towards women. Thanks to one police force listening to local women’s organisations, women and girls in Nottingham will receive the message that this kind of behaviour isn’t normal or acceptable. Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Let us know your views at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

When to eat... The old adage ‘breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper’ could be the best way to lose weight and stay healthy, Kings College scientists say. A major review of 28 recent studies has concluded that keeping calories down late at night is the secret to combating obesity. Researchers warn that modern lifestyles have led to many people dining later in the day, or at irregular intervals, which is confusing the body’s circadian rhythms and hindering digestion. Most people in Ireland & the UK increases their energy intake across the day, with breakfast providing the fewest calories and dinner the most. But recent 'trials have shown that people who eat the most in the morning experience greater weight loss and improve blood sugar levels

even when consuming the same amount of calories overall. Many metabolic processes such as appetite, digestion and the metabolism of fat, cholesterol and glucose follow a circadian pattern. However most national dietary guidelines focus on ‘what’ people should eat in terms of food and nutrients, with only a few also providing recommendations on ‘when’ to eat over the course of a day. Dr Gerda Pot, Visiting Lecturer in the Diabetes and Nutritional Sciences Division at King’s College London says: “There seems to be some truth in the saying ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper’, however, this warrants further investigation. Whilst we have a much better understanding today of what we should be eating, we are still left with the question as to which

meal should provide us with the most energy. Although the evidence suggests that eating more calories later in the evening is associated with obesity, we are still far from understanding whether our energy intake should be distributed equally across the day or whether breakfast should contribute the greatest proportion of energy, followed by lunch and dinner.” The scientists also claim that people should also consider ‘with whom we eat’, as well as what we eat and when. Regular family meals contribute to healthy eating habits in children and adolescents, they conclude on current evidence. The review was published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society.

Sarah’s snap puts romance in the frame LIXNAW woman Sarah Linehan was strolling on Banna Strand last Sunday week when she Picture: Sarah Linehan/ happened across a romantic scene. At about 9.30pm, with the sunset as a backdrop, Facebook Sarah spotted a man drop to his knee to ask his partner to marry him. After snapping the moment from afar, Sarah then realised she had an absolutely astounding photo of the moment. However, she never approached the couple to offer them the picture. Sarah put out an appeal on social media, so that she could reunite the couple with the epic photo. The story hit the headlines again in The Kerryman this week, where Sarah reported that the picture captured the imagination of national and international media. Sarah even got an email from ABC News in New York. “I’d no idea that it would go as crazy as it did, but I think it was that everyone likes a good news story,” she said. And via her post that went viral, Abu Dhabi-based Sarah did succeed in uniting the snap with the subjects!

Views From Kerry And Around The World Healthy Eating A large bowl of porridge each day may protect against death from cancer, the biggest ever analysis of the benefits of whole grains has shown. Oats have long been considered a super-food, staving off illnesses like diabetes and heart disease. But now a major review by Harvard University has found that whole grains also seem to prevent early death and lower the chance of dying from cancer. A meta-analysis of 12 studies involving nearly 800,000 people found that eating 70 grams of whole grains a day – the equivalent of a large bowl of porridge – lowers the risk of all-cause death by 22 per cent and death from cancer by 20 per cent. It also reduces the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 20 per cent. Scientists believe that whole grains help lower cholesterol and help regulate blood sugar, as well as keeping people full for longer, meaning they don’t snack on unhealthy foods. The same effect could be gained eating bran, quinoa or a mix of grains. “Based on the solid evidence from this meta-analysis and numerous previous studies that collectively document beneficial effects of whole grains, I think healthcare providers should unanimously recommend whole grain consumption to the general population as well as to patients with certain diseases to help achieve better health and perhaps reduce death,” said Dr Qi Sun, assistant professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. Whole grains, where the bran and germ remain, contain 25 per cent more protein than refined grains, such as those that make white flour, pasta and white rice. Previous studies have shown that whole grains can boost bone mineral density, lower blood pressure, promote healthy gut bacteria and reduce the risk of diabetes. One particular fibre found only in oats – called betaglucan – has been found to lower cholesterol which can help to protect against heart disease. A bioactive compound called avenanthramide is also thought to stop fat forming in the arteries, preventing heart attacks and strokes. Whole grains are also widely recommended in many dietary guidelines because they contain high levels of nutrients like zinc, copper, manganese, iron and thiamine. They are also believed to boost levels of

antioxidants which combat free-radicals which are linked to cancer. The new research suggests that if more people switched to whole grains, thousands of lives could be saved each year. Cumulatively, cancer kills around 160,000 people a year while coronary heart disease is responsible for around 73,000 deaths in the UK each year. Health experts said the study proved that whole grains were essential for good health. Prof Tim Key, Cancer Research UK scientist at the University of Oxford, said: “We know that eating fibre, including whole grains, can reduce the risk of developing bowel cancer. “This study suggests that a diet high in whole grains could reduce death from cancer, but it’s difficult to tease apart other lifestyle factors that could be playing a role. If whole grains do reduce the risk of dying from cancer it’s most likely linked to bowel cancer. Decades of evidence shows that eating a diet high in fibre, fruit and vegetables and low in processed and red meat, reduces the risk of developing bowel cancer.” The researchers recommend that people choose foods that are high in whole grain ingredients—such as bran, oatmeal, and quinoa—that have at least 16 grams per serving, while reducing consumption of unhealthy refined carbohydrates. Each 16 gram serving lowered the risk of total death by seven per cent, and cancer by 5 per cent. Dr Naveed Sattar, Professor of Metabolic Medicine at the University of Glasgow said: “The simplest way to increase would be to alter cereal intakes to bran flakes or whole grain cereals – these are excellent ways to start the day but oatmeal would also be fine – and replacing white bread with whole wheat bread is also advisable. In general, though, I think many of us need to eat more fibre in one form of the other and this report seems to add more support for this notion.” Victoria Taylor, Senior Dietitian at the British Heart Foundation said: “Eating more whole grains is a simple change we can make to improve our diet and help lower our risk of heart and circulatory disease. “Choosing brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, wholemeal or granary bread instead of white and swapping to whole grain breakfast cereals like porridge are all simple ways to help us up our fibre and wholegrain intake.”

Pope Francis says 'world is at war', but not a religious war POPE FRANCIS has said that a string of recent attacks, including the murder of a priest in France, was proof that the "world is at war". However, the Pope said he was not talking about a war of religion, but rather one of domination of people’s and economic interests. "The word that is being repeated often is insecurity, but the real word is war," he said in brief comments to reporters while flying to southern Poland for a five-day visit. "Let's recognise it. The world is in a state of war in bits and pieces," he said, adding that the attacks could be seen as another world war, specifically mentioning World War I and World War II. "Now there is this one (war). It is perhaps not organic but it is organised and it is war," he said. "We should not be afraid to speak this truth. The world is at war because it has lost peace." He added: "Not a war of religion. There is a war of interests. There is a war for money. There is a war for natural resources. There is a war for domination of peoples. This is the war," he said. "All religions want peace. Others want war. Do you understand?" he said. He called Fr Jacques Hamel, the priest forced to his knees by Islamist militants and murdered, "a saintly priest", but said he was just one of many innocent victims.

Vacant properties highlighted THE number of vacant properties sin Kerry was highlighted at this month’s meeting of Kerry County Council. C o u n c i l - Maura Healy-Rae. lor Maura Healy-Rae said: “Following an earlier motion highlighting the amount of vacant properties in our county which clearly are not at a standard for the occupation of tenants, did Kerry County Council make any progress with the idea of providing funding to the owners of these properties to bring them up to the required standard which they could retrieve when these properties are rented.”

Public toilets in Killarney MEMBERS of Kerry County Council have been urged to revisit the proposal to provide public toilets at the courthouse in Killarney. Raising the issue at the July meeting, Councillor Maura Healy-Rae said a dual-purpose facility was needed to service the general public and those who attend court sittings. “It is clear the facilities that are in place at present to not cater for the categories outlined,” said Cllr Healy-Rae.

Water pipe replacement works set to benefit over 2,500 Mid Kerry homes WORKS have begun on water pipe replacement works which should benefit over 2,500 homes in the Mid Kerry area. The total funding allocated for the project, from Barleymount to Flynn’s Forget, amounts to €390,000 (€300,000 from Flynn’s Forge to Aglish and €90,000 from Coolroe cross towards Barleymount) for mains pipe replacement and road reinstatement. Welcoming the works, Killarney mayor Councillor Brendan Cronin said: “I am delighted to confirm that these long-overdue major water pipe replacement works have begun.” These improvement works should benefit over 2,500 homes in the Mid Kerry district from Aghadoe to Rockfield and from Milltown/Listry to Ballyhar including all townlands within this

Dezoning of land ‘will have devastating impact’ Councillor Brendan Cronin.

area, noted the Ballyhar councillor. “Residents in this area have suffered for years with continuous water breaks and I am delighted to have been able to secure and deliver this funding as the pipe network in Mid Kerry is appalling for 21st century Ireland,” added Cllr Cronin.

DEZONING of lands around Killarney and Tralee by the local authority in Kerry will have “a devastating impact” on house building in the county, it has been claimed. Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae raised the issue in the Dáil this week, saying: “I know of 30 people working in Liebherr who cannot find a house to buy or a site on which to build a house. “Will the Taoiseach direct that this process be delayed? It is wrong that any local authority would be dezoning lands in the context of current housing need. I respect the right of people and private developers to build their own houses.” If lands are dezoned, the situation could arise of there being no land available in Killarney on which to build houses, according to Deputy Healy-Rae. “I would be grateful if the Taoiseach would direct that this process be delayed,” he said. Taoiseach Enda Kenny stated that this is a matter for the local

Deputy Danny Healy-Rae.

authority. “It is a function of the local authorities to discuss this issue," he said. Mr Kenny added that he was confident that the authority concerned has made its decision “in the full knowledge of why it is necessary”. Deputy Danny Healy-Rae replied that this issue “arises out of the national spatial strategy, which is being directed by the Government under the Taoiseach's watch”.

VW certain Meeke will win Finland KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle should win Rally Finland easily, believes Volkswagen team boss Jost Capito. As Citroen is only contesting a part-season in the 2016 World Rally Championship, Meeke and Nagle go into Finland ninth in the standings – so will start eighth on the road. Championship leaders VW believe that position in the running order will put Meeke and Nagle in an unbeatable position on the WRC's fastest rally. Though VW's lead driver Sebastien Ogier still holds a comfortable advantage in the championship, he has not won on gravel all season. Meeke dismissed VW's prediction he was near-certain to become the first Briton to win Finland this weekend. But having not competed in the DS 3 since his Portugal win in May, Meeke doubts he can win this weekend.

What people are doing with their high-end cars in Dubai seems completely insane THE United Arab Emirates is one of richest countries in the Middle East. However, like any other modern country, the UAE has its fair share of problems. These problems range from the typical to the truly bizarre. One of the bizarre problems is the problem of high-end luxury cars being frequently abandoned in local airport car parks. A rare abandoned super car – such as this Ferrari Enzo – is a familiar sight in many of Dubai’s airports. So why are people leaving their luxury cars at the airports in Dubai? The answer is actually relatively simple: Sharia law. The UAE, like many Arab countries in the Middle East, observes Sharia law. Under Sharia law, not paying your debts is a criminal offence. If you fall behind on your car payments, bounce

a check, stop paying your credit card, or default on your mortgage, you go to prison. There is no bankruptcy protection in the UAE. This means that all those fancy cars gathering dust in airport car parks across were abandoned by owners who chose to escape the country

BRENNANS

instead of going to prison. When police discover an abandoned car, if the owner fails to appear after 15 days, the car is impounded. Most impounded vehicles are never claimed by their owners. Police then auction off the cars for pennies on the dollar. On average, police recover around 3,000 abandoned luxury cars every year. This shows yet another reason why the "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality is a destructive one. These folks certainly don't deserve to go to prison for their debts, but you have to wonder about a system that makes it so easy for people to get into that much debt in the first place.

Revving up for action in Aghadoe at Jimmy Devane Memorial Autocross ALL roads will lead to Aghadoe this weekend as the Jimmy Devane Memorial Autocross takes place this Sunday, July 31. The popular event is held in memory of Jimmy, a wellknown autocross and rally competitor who passed away in 2009. Run by Killarney & District Motor Club the action takes place at Nunstown, Aghadoe, Killarney. The venue is directly across from the Aghadoe graveyard and will be signposted on the day from Killarney Town. “Racing starts at 12 o’clock and should be an action-packed day with some of the best competitors from all over the country taking part driving a wide variety of cars and special buggies,” said Johnny Hickey of Killarney & District Motor Club. Last year’s winner Ian Byrne is set to return to defend his title in the exciting event, which is a counting round of the Munster Autocross Championship. “The track is technical and fast, with some big jumps and precision driving required,” said Johnny. “There will be some fierce competition for overall honours and the Jimmy Devane Cup which is awarded to the fastest time of the day on the event.” Spectators will be able to view the complete track from a safe location. There will be plenty of parking, access to the service area and should make for a great spectacle and entertaining day out to enjoy. Donations on the day and proceeds of the event will go to the Kerry branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland. More information on the event can be found on the Killarney Autocross Facebook page. Contact event clerk of the course Denis Nagle on 087-2680257.

Brian McCarthy hailed as ‘representing very best of Kerry’ AS ONE of his first duties as mayor of Kerry, Councillor Michael O’Shea led tributes to FEXCO founder Brian McCarthy. Friends, family and colleagues of Mr McCarthy gathered at Kerry County Buildings for a civic reception last week. Mayor O’Shea described Mr McCarthy as “a man who represents the very best of Kerry” and “a true Kerry hero”.

Describing Mr McCarthy as “one of life’s gentlemen”, the mayor added: “He is a quiet, polite and humble man – but that humility disguises a sharp brain, a steely tenacity and a strong determination to achieve goals.” Brian McCarthy has overseen the enormous development and growth of FEXCO during the 35 years since its foundation – and with remarkable success.

The pursuit of that dream now means that FEXCO employs more than 2,000 people in Ireland and across the globe. “It has been a remarkable success story. From its Killorglin headquarters it provides a range of financial services to some of the world’s biggest brands,” said Cllr O'Shea. He added: “I read that Brian was once asked about why FEXCO would not move to the Financial Services

Centre in Dublin. Brian said (and I quote): ‘This business can be run from the North Pole provided you have the right people. But the view is better here in Killorglin.’” The mayor concluded: “Brian – you are an inspiration to our county and a treasure in Kerry.” Councillor Michael Cahill had proposed the honour for Mr McCarthy.

Brother No one knew that morning What sadness the day would bring When a heart of gold stopped beating And we could not do a thing. You never said goodbye to us Perhaps it’s just as well For we could not have said goodbye To someone we loved so well.

Time passes, memories stay, Quietly remembered everyday.

You always had a smile to share Time to give and time to care A loving nature a heart of gold One of the best this world could hold Never selfish, always kind These are the memories you left behind.

miraculous invocation to saint theresa, the little flower O glorious St. Theresa, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and counsel mankind. I implore your miraculous intercession. So powerful are you in obtaining every need of body and soul our Holy Mother Church proclaims you a “prodigy of miracles, the greatest Saint of modern times.” Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of “spending Heaven doing upon earth...of letting fall from Heaven a shower of Roses”. Henceforth dear little flower, I will fulfill your plea, “to be made known everywhere” and I will never cease to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen. Say the above for 9 days and you will receive a flower or a rose, in some form during or after 9 days as an indication that your request will be granted. A.B.

15th anniversary O’Callaghan

Treasured memories of our beautiful Daughter and Sister Karen “Osprey” Muckross, Killarney who died tragically on 4th August 1996, aged 21 years. Karen Smiling, laughing, dimpled cheeks, vibrant, busy, scaling peaks. Waving, greeting young and old, face of beauty still and cold. Cycling, always on the go, music, meetings, never no. Work her favourite, aprons white, trays and traffic, what a sight. Muckross rowing, lakes serene, just twenty one, what might have been. Time and tide, days too short, new job waiting, soon to start. Cycling homeward, traffic speeding, father, mother, sisters grieving. Romance, boyfriend, last goodbyes, her moon, her stars, her loved filled eyes. Void of darkness hearts so broken, special person, love unspoken.

In loving memory of John O’Callaghan, 16 Marian Terrace, Killarney, who died on August 1st 2001. You always had a smile to share Time to give and time to care A loving nature, a heart of gold One of the best this world could hold Never selfish, always kind These are the memories you left behind. Sadly missed by your loving wife Noreen, sons Daniel, John and Vincent, daughters Joanie, Noreen and Eileen, your in-laws and all your grandchildren.

19th anniversary Carey

Memories vivid never end, on walking sleeping of time not spent. Rest above the lakes so loved, watch forever from above. Anger, grief, great confusion, friends, tears in huge profusion. Nights of sadness, days so barren, busy, laughing, lovely Karen. By Weeshie. Always in our thoughts, forever in our hearts, sadly missed by Mam, Anne, Clare, Susan and families. Anniversary Mass on Sunday 31st of July 9.30am at Muckross Church.

35th anniversary O’Donoghue In loving memory of my mother Mary Bridget, late of St Brendan’s Terrace, Killarney who died on the 28th of July 1981. On her soul sweet Jesus have mercy. Our Lady of Perpetual Help pray for her.

In loving memory of Ned Carey, Killeen Gates, Kilcummin who passed on the 30th of July 1997. Whispering I stop to hear if your voice, is whispering in the wind, calling through the trees, to the hearts that never mend, due to the pain of losing you to the Atlantic’s beautiful waters. Miss you, we forever do, your wife, your son, your daughters. Life goes on, a life we all must live, but just to see your smiling face, our souls we would gladly give. Your voice does fade with passing years though your smiling face will forever stay, we struggle to fight back our tears, as we approach the anniversary of that day. So as I sit here listening, for that old familiar sound, I struggle to hear the whispering, to know his spirit is around. T. Carey.

There’s a gift in life you cannot buy A gift so rare and true It’s a gift of a wonderful mother Like the one we had in you.

Forever missed by his wife Carol, son Timothy, daughters Julie-Ann and Lorraine.

Never to be forgotten by your loving daughter Chrissie and family.

Mass for Ned in Ballyhar Church on the 5th of August at 7pm.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

We had the privilege of accepting a Trophy on Wednesday last on behalf of the club, presented by Bart and Gerry Bambury in memory of their late father, Tom Bambury, who was a keen angler all his life and instilled this passion in his family. Bart had spearheaded the project to have a memorial trophy crafted in Tom’s memory and the resulting piece reflected both the angling aspect with a leaping fish and also being mounted on hand carved native wood, captured both Toms craftsmanship as a former woodwork teacher and his passion for the outdoors. The former Kenmare headmaster was presented with lifetime membership of Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club a number of years ago and was activity angling with his sons up to shortly before his passing. The Trophy will be fished for in our upcoming competition on Lough Lein on Sunday 14th August 2016. The inaugural event will carry an entry fee of €20 per member and is on a pick your partner basis. Commencing at Ross at 1030 and all boats landed for 6pm. Weigh in at shed shortly afterwards, standard 10” to V applies. To reflect the generosity of the Bambury family in honoring the club with the

Trophy and in keeping with their active fund raising exploits with regard to St. Francis School in Beaufort, competition entry levy will be donated to this worthy cause. Entry can be made to any club officer. Reminder now as well that our annual juvenile evening fishing trip to Barfinny is taking place on Friday night 05th August commencing at 6pm until approx 9pm. Also coming up next weekend, we host a day out on Lough Lein with the Caragh Bridge Angling Club on Sunday 07th August. This annual event is a great chance to meet up with fishermen of the Caragh River and get up to date on the catches being made on that water. As always we would appreciate as much assistance from members as possible, we hope to land for a fry up on the day and the more boats available, the better the fishing experience will be. We will be gathering at Ross about 10am on the morning and any further details available through any committee member. Members are also reminded that we have free fishing on the Caragh Bridge Club Water, on the last Sunday of every month, just ensure that you have your KSTAC membership card to hand on the day when fishing.

Bright lights of Big Apple cast spotlight on Firies

FIRIES GAA CLUB is looking forward to many fruitful days ahead in Páirc Eamonn and further afield as it continues its transatlantic relationship with L&M Construction of New York City. The club’s under-16 and minor boys are being supported by Firies native Mike Lenihan of L&M Construction. “Mike has not forgotten his roots and generously supports the young men of Firies GAA, much to the delight of the club and their respective management team,” said Firies Coiste na nÓg chairman Eugene Cosgrave Mike lined out for Firies at underage level under the careful stewardship of his neighbours – the late Jerry Foley and Tom Shanahan. “He was a very committed young player and played the game with great flair and enthusiasm,” added Eugene. His underage career culminated with an East Kerry U-16 Champion-

ship in 1996. “Following his educational path, Mike took up a carpentry apprenticeship, which has stood well to him to this day,” said Eugene. Mike went on to play senior football with Firies and competed in an O’Donoghue Cup semi-final for Firies in 2002. Unfortunately for Firies, Mike moved to New York in 2004 to pursue a career in construction, and not surprisingly and now runs his own successful construction company in New York. Tim Foley, under-16/minor manager, added: “Mike Lenihan’s resounding commitment to the club and indeed, the parish is very much appreciated and valued throughout our tight-knit community, our relationship isn’t as old as the transatlantic cable, but it is as much valued and appreciated within our footballing family in Firies.” Pictured top and above: The Firies GAA Club under-16 boys and minor teams and management.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Action needed on Two Mile School I’M a past pupil of the Two Mile (Cahooreigh) National School and a member of the local community with a young child. When I heard that there was a public meeting to discuss the future of the school last November I went along. The student numbers and the lack of enrolment were discussed. Three options were presented but the only feasible option was to become a one-teacher school from September 2016. To anyone sitting in the room it was clear that the school was on the road to closure and nobody seemed to be at the wheel. It was asked why the student numbers had dropped and it was explained that the demographics of the area meant that there were no children available to attend the school. This raised eyebrows among community members in

attendance, particularly given the number of new houses in the area with young families. It should also be noted that while, in recent years, the Two Mile was reducing from a three-teacher school with approximately 80 students to a two-teacher school with 17 students, multiple new school classrooms have been added to the surrounding schools. As a taxpayer and a parent I’m delighted to see Government expenditure on schools, but it frustrates and saddens me to think that the Two Mile School, a perfectly good three-classroom school, could be sitting empty. In an effort to gauge local opinion of the school, some concerned community members carried out a survey of the immediate Two Mile School area. The results showed an overwhelming desire of those

surveyed, to send their child/children to the school should certain changes occur. There are in excess of 90 children under the age of 12 in the immediate area. The parents of 86 of these children completed the survey. It is sad when declining population leads to the closure of the post office, the church and the school. KERRY SENIORS TAKE ON CLARE IN ALL-IRELAND QUARTER-FINAL

Injuries: Colm Cooper, Michael Geaney and Johnny Buckley, will miss Sunday’s showdown. PICTURE: BRENDAN MORAN/SPORTSFILE

KERRY and Clare cross swords in the championship for the second time this year when they meet in the All-Ireland Quarter Final on Sunday in Croke Park in the second game of a treble header

Spa

Coiste na nÓg Spa under 11 boys lost their opening East Kerry league game at home to legion on Sunday with a scoreline of 5-11 to 5-13. U14 Boys With Beaufort leading by 4 points at half time, a much improved second hand performance in the second half helped Spa to victory. Final Score Beaufort 9-9 Spa 11-9. Spa U16 Boys Spa travelled to Ballybunion missing a few players and the long journey didn’t help. Spa fought bravely to close the gap scoring 1-7 without reply but a goal in the last few minutes for Beale gave them the points on this occasion. The management also like to wish Ryan Kelliher the best who recently attended Ireland U16 Soccer trials last Wednesday. Minor East Kerry League Spa 1-15 Scartaglen/Cordal 0-7 Another excellent outing for our minors in Spa. A brilliant game of football. Ladies Football Well done to our u13 girls Spa 3-6 Dr Crokes 0-4 in the Championship. This was a great performance from our young team. A first for many to play on a full pitch and all adapted wonderfully. Great performances from Eimear Cronin, Sarah Fleming, Erin

that throws in at 2pm. It will be recalled that the sides met in the semi-finals of the Munster championship on June 12 when Kerry had a nine points victory, 2-23 to 0-17 a game that saw Clare stunned by a goal in the first minute when Colm Cooper’s shot went all the way to the Clare net. Since then, Kerry have had just one championship game overcoming fellow quarterfinalists Tipperary in the Munster final four weeks ago. In contrast, Clare quickly dusted themselves down following that defeat in the Fitzgerald Stadium, and have reeled off three fine victories by the qualifier route in successive weekends defeating Laois by a point, Sligo by seven points and Roscommon by six points on Saturday last to qualify for the quarter finals for the first time. Kerry are of course seasoned campaigners at this stage of the championship and have never failed to qualify for the quarter finals since their introduction back in 2001. Injuries continue to upset Kerry’s preparations with Michael Geaney the latest player to be sidelined and he, along with Johnny Buckley and Colm Cooper, will miss Sunday’s showdown. Kerry’s lack of competitive action with only two games in as many months is a worry heading into Sunday’s game against a side who have had a roller coaster ride through the qualifiers in the last few weeks but knowing Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his management team nothing will be taken for granted by way of preparation for this unique showdown. The Kerry team is

due to be announced on Friday evening at 7pm and the referee on Sunday is Maurice Deegan of Laois. The third game on Sunday is the second quarter final between Galway and Tipperary that has a throw-in of 4pm.

Holland. Player of the game went to Clodagh O’Connor in goals who pulled off magnificent saves to secure our win against an equally impressive Dr Crokes. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family of young Amy O’Connor who is battling cancer at this time. Senior Ladies Spa 2-4 Milltown/Listry 5-10 Lost to a stronger team on the day. Hopefully our injured players will be back shortly. Upcoming Fixtures Senior Ladies Mary Jo Curran Friday July Spa away to Austin Stacks at 7pm. Spa Lotto 24/7/2016 In the Heights Hotel. Numbers drawn: 4, 18, 24, 25. No Winner. Next draw on Monday August 1st in The Killarney Oaks for a jackpot of €7400. Weddings Congratulations to Michael O’Donoghue, Gortdromakerry, on his recent marriage to Muireann Quane, Ballybunion. Spa 1996 O’Donoghue Cup Re-Union Thursday August 11th @7pm in Spa. Friday August 28th 1996 proved to be a historic occasion for the footballers of Spa who brought the O’Donoghue Cup to the club for the first occasion. After the formation of the club in 1948 it annexed both the junior and senior East Kerry titles in successive years

but as the O’Donoghue cup was not presented to the EK Board until 1954 the players of the 1948-49 had to be content with a medal presentation for those victories. While 50 long years may have elapsed since that O’Donoghue Cup victory it has still remained special in the lore of Spa GAA history as it gave the players of that era a sense of self belief which sustained them in the years ahead and also paved the way for a further nine O’Donoghue Cup victories. On Thursday August 11th the surviving members of that panel as well as representatives of those who have sadly passed away in the interim period will assemble in the Spa Clubhouse for a special mass at 7pm for those deceased members which will be celebrated by Fr Michael O’Donoghue who was a member of that winning side and this will be followed by a social evening when memories and anecdotes will be shared. A full list of the panel of players and management will be published in next weeks notes.

TICKET ARRANGEMENTS

ALL-IRELAND quarter-final tickets went on public sale in Austin Stack Park from Wednesday, July 27, and are also available to purchase from the Kerry GAA Store in the Killarney Outlet Centre and participating Centra and SuperValu stores around the county.

KERRY MINORS TAKE ON DERRY IN CROKE PARK

Kerry and Derry Minors have an early start on Sunday next at 12 noon when they meet in the quarterfinals of the Electric Ireland Minor football Championship in the first game of a treble bill at Croke Park. Kerry are making their fifth consecutive appearance at this level of the competition and they are of course the reigning All Ireland champions. They boast a nice blend of youth and experience with the likes of Billy Courtney, Daniel O’Brien, Graham O’Sullivan, Mike Breen and Bryan Sweeney all playing a part in last year’s final and of course Kerry had five points to spare over Derry in last year’s semi final. The likes of Michael Potts, Daniel O’Brien, David Naughton, Niall O’Donoghue, Billy Courtney, Darren Moynihan, David Shaw and David Clifford, who were part of the St Brendan’s Killarney Hogan Cup winning side, will also renew acquaintances with some of

HAPPY CÚL CAMPERS IN FIRIES GAA Up to 140 boys and girls enjoyed an action packed week of GAA in Pairc Eamonn; Firies GAA HQ recently. It is

the St Pats College players whom they defeated in that final. Kerry defeated easily Waterford in their opening game in Dungarvan and then accounted for Clare in the semi final in Milltown Malbay by six points. In the provincial final Kerry got over the Cork challenge with six points to spare. Derry defeated Tyrone by eight points and Armagh by six on their way to the Ulster final where they lost out to a highly rated Donegal side by just two points, 2-10 to 1-11. Referee is John Hickey. The remaining quarterfinals involve Galway/Laois, Kildare Mayo, and Donegal/Cork.

KERRY JUNIORS IN ALL-IRELAND FINAL

Kerry Junior footballers booked their place in the All-Ireland Junior championship final with what was an emphatic victory in the end against Lancashire on Saturday last. The home side gave as good as they got in the first half with Asdee native Darren Russell bagging a goal but at the break Kerry had fought back to level proceedings, 0-9 to 1-6. The Kerry management team wrung the changes at the break introducing three fresh bodies and a four goal salvo from Kevin O’Sullivan, Kieran Hurley, Niall O’Shea and Robert Wharton ensured that Kerry reached a third consecutive final on a 4-17 to 3-10 scoreline. Mayo defeated last year’s semi finalists, Wexford by 2-10 to 0-10 in that other semi final so this year’s final on August 6 is a repeat of last year’s final between Kerry and Mayo. No venue has been decided as yet but should Mayo win their All Ireland qualifier against Westmeath then the game could be in Croke Park as part of a treble header with the two remaining quarterfinal ties similar to last year.

a much anticipated camp for many of the junior members of our club and is anxiously awaited each summer. Both the ever patient coaches and co-ordinator; Vince Cooper should be commended for their involvement in this highly enjoyable camp. Well done to all the boys and girls. U12 BOYS Firies Coiste na nÒg would like to wish Luke Ring a speedy recovery following an injury he sustained at a recent U12 blitz.

Fossa

Fossa GAA Lotto 24th July 2016 Numbers drawn were 4, 5, 20, 23. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €9,000. Round 8 of the County league. Final score 1-16 to 1-08. This was another solid display with the focus always on gaining promotion to Division 3 for next year. They have maintained their 100% record and will play Skellig Rangers and Na Gael, who are all top of the table contenders in the final two rounds. It should make for a very exciting finish to what has been an extremely successful year so far. Minor Football The Minors played Kilcummin in the East Kerry League on Thursday evening. Half time they trailed 1-06 to 0-05. Again Kilcummin scored a goal early in the second half but Fossa hit back with a great goal from Conor Murphy who had moved into full forward. This was followed by two points from Eamonn Murphy and another from Liam Buckley, however Kilcummin struck for two quick goals which put the game beyond Fossa. We did have a couple of chances with a penalty being saved by the Kilcummin goalkeeper and we also hit the post, on another night these would have gone in and the outcome would have been very different. The Fossa boys played very well and deserved more from this game. Under 16 Boys County League On Wednesday evening our U16 boys took on Ballymac in round 2 of the County League.Final score 6-12 to 1-10. On the evening it would be unfair to single out individuals as it was an all round team performance which saw the team through. Under 14 Boys East Kerry League Final On Sunday evening our under 14 boys took to the field in Fitzgerald stadium to take on Kilcummin in the East Kerry Division 3 final. Fossa eventually ran out winners on a scoreline of 5-11 to 2-07. Captain Colm Talbot received the trophy from the East Kerry Board Na nÓg Chairman and was impressive in his acceptance speech, thanking East Kerry Board for giving all these young players the chance to play in Fitzgerald stadium and Tom Moriarty, the referee. A big thank you also to the Fossa club who arranged a great meal in The Valley after the game for the team and mentors. Good Luck Fossa GAA wishes the best of luck to David Clifford who lines out for the Kerry minor team next Sunday against Derry in Croke Park in the All-Ireland quarter final at 12pm. We also would like to wish the Kerry Senior team all the best against Clare in their clash at 2pm, hopefully we will have double celebrations on the day! U-13 Girls Football The Fossa U-13 girls who had good first outing tonight in the championship overcoming a very talented John Mitchels side. The Fossa girls have secured a semi final against Milltown/Listry next Tuesday evening in Fossa. Ladies Football The best of luck to Anna O’Reilly, Erica McGlynn and Anna Clifford who are part of the Kerry U-16 team aiming to retain their All-Ireland crown against Dublin on Wednesday evening, this is a serious team and it will take a very good side to dethrone them and we wish them all the best.
