Manhunt in Beaufort following post office raid

GARDAÍ in Killarney are continuing to appeal for any information in relation to a post office robbery at Waterville. Armed robbers hit Waterville Post Office at 11.15am on Wednesday making off with a substantial amount of cash. Two individuals were subsequently arrested in the Beaufort area after a dramatic manhunt. It is reported that two men from Kerry were being questioned on Wednesday night in relation to the incident. Two gardaí were injured after their car was rammed by the raiders in the Kilgobnet area. The raiders had made their getaway from Waterville in a blue Ford Ka, later abandoned and found burnt out, approximately seven miles from Waterville on the Ballaghisheen Road.

They then switched vehicles in a move which Gardaí believe was pre-arranged. It is this car that was involved in the ramming incident. Gardaí are particularly interested in tracking the movements of a blue three-door Ford Ka, registered number 99D84126. “Any sightings of this vehicle on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning prior to or immediately after the raid should be reported to Killarney Gardaí,” said Superintendent Flor Murphy. Investigating officers are anxious to trace the movements of the Blue Mazda 6 vehicle, registered number 03D8947. “Gardaí believe that this vehicle was also used by the raiders and was found burning at Ardraw, Beaufort, at approximately 12.30pm on Wednesday,” said Supt Murphy. Gardaí also appealing for any information from garage owners in relation to the unusual or

Government needs to prioritise rural crime RURAL crime is something we tend to think of in general, abstract terms but it came uncomfortably close to our own doorsteps this week as the raid on the post office in Waterville and subsequent manhunt in Beaufort made headlines at home and abroad. It got many thinking on a broader level of the spiral in crime throughout towns and villages across Ireland.

Rural crime is a serious issue and the Government really needs to step up and make it a priority. We all know people in our communities who literally live in terror in their own homes, from older people to those who reside alone or in isolated areas. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

suspicious purchase of petrol prior to the events . A third suspect cannot be ruled out at this stage and over 30 Gardaí continued to search mid-Kerry on Thursday. Members of the public and landowners in the Waterville, Ballaghisheen, Glencar and Beaufort areas are also urged to come forward if they have any information in relation to any unusual or suspicious items that may have been discarded. Supt Murphy has acknowledged the bravery of a male and female Garda who were left injured and

severely traumatised when their patrol car was rammed by the raiders. “I also wish to acknowledge the tremendous response and assistance from members of the public in relation to the events yesterday which has progressed our investigations,” added Supt Murphy. If you have any information, contact Killarney Gardaí on 0646671160 or on the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Deenagh Lodge to welcome Tour de Munster THE four-day Tour de Munster will be arriving in Killarney on Saturday where the team at the Deenagh Lodge will be rolling out the red carpet for the participating cyclists from 4pm. The 120 amateur cyclists embarked on this four-day event yesterday and they will cover 600km around Munster in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. “All cyclists pay their own way so all sponsorship money raised by the cyclists goes directly to the six Munster DSI branches,” said Debbie Dillon of Down Syndrome Kerry. “Without the cyclists this event would not exist.” Money is also raised by getting sponsorship from businesses. “Bucket shaking will be taking place as the cyclists pass through each county. Money raised from in each county stays in that county,” added Debbie. “Sean Kelly has cycled the four days for the last number of years and is will be doing so again this year. He will be arriving at Tralee, Killarney and Kenmare along with the other cyclists so this will be an ideal opportunity for fans to meet him.” Cyclists are expected to arrive at the Down Syndrome Kerry Shop in Tralee today, Friday, at 5pm. Meanwhile, on Sunday a spinathon will take place in aid of the event this Sunday at Market Cross, Killarney. “A relay team of four cyclists will cover a distance of approximately 100km on stationary bikes,” said Debbie.

Hannah returns from mission of mercy to Ghana Hannah Sherry pictured with students in Ghana.

Question

I’m working part-time on a low wage. Do I qualify for any social welfare payments? Answer

It depends on your personal circumstances. Many people work part time before taking up full-time employment. If you are working part time you can, in some cases, keep or apply for a partial social welfare payment, or you may qualify for additional supports. If you work over 38 hours in a fortnight and you have children you may be able to claim Family Income Supplement (FIS). FIS is a weekly tax-free payment for people on low pay. You may be able to claim a jobseeker’s payment for the days you are not working. You can work part-time for up to 3 days a week and claim a reduced Jobseeker's Benefit or Jobseeker's Allowance payment. You may qualify for the Part-time Job Incentive Scheme if you were getting Jobseeker’s Allowance and find part-time work for less than 24 hours per week. However, one of the main conditions for getting a jobseeker’s payment is that you must be available for and actively seeking work. This means that you must continue to look for work on the days you are unemployed. You must also be unemployed for at least 4 days out of 7 consecutive days. If you return to work after a period of unemployment, you may qualify for the Back to Work Family Dividend (BTWFD) which aims to help families move from social welfare into employment. The BTWFD and FIS can be paid together and the BTWFD is not taken into account in the means test for FIS. If you are parenting alone and getting a One-Parent Family Payment, you are allowed to earn a certain amount each week and keep your payment. In some cases, people getting disability payments can do some work and keep a social welfare payment.

BIG-HEARTED Headford teenager Hannah Sherry has just returned from the journey of a lifetime during which she helped make a major difference to the lives of young people in Africa. Hannah’s school, Repton in Derbyshire, has forged close links with the Dreamland School in Ghana and the Kerry teenager was one of eight fifthyear students from Repton travelling to Dreamland for two weeks in July. Hannah and her fellow students spent the fortnight helping improve conditions for their counterparts in Dreamland. “When we first arrived, despite having some idea about what it would be like, seeing the packed roads, crazy drivers, and women and children dodging in and out between cars trying to sell all sorts of weird and wonderful things was something I couldn’t have prepared myself for,” said Hannah. “However, if that was a shock, it was just something else when we arrived at the school for the first day and the whole school came sprinting over to crowd around our bus, making it impossible to get off or walk around without at least five children hanging off you at all times!” Hannah helped with teaching, cultural sharing and hands-on building and painting projects. A talented pianist and cellist, the Kerry teen also hosted music workshops for the children. “We had the chance to teach children ranging in age from 7 to 14, and in classes twice as big as normal, but despite this, the children were so eager to learn whatever we had to offer, from hangman in Spanish to jumping up and down in Biology that at one school, they asked me if it was okay for them to stay on after school had finished to complete the booklet!” said Hannah. “One of the most heart-warming things was giving groups of children playing on the sides of the roads, new footballs which they were delighted with and so thankful for.” Money raised at Repton has gone towards building new blocks at the school as well as its café and library and purchasing schoolbooks for the students. “For them, education was the most important thing and they felt so lucky to even be able to go to school, taking nothing for granted and appreciating all the help we were able to offer them,” said Hannah. “Thank you to everyone who donated or helped in raising money for this trip as without it; we wouldn’t have been able to do as much for the children in Ghana as we did, and they, and I, are so grateful.”

Tee off in memory of Seani in aid of Kerry Hospice Foundation THIS week family and friends of Killarney man Seani McCarthy joined forces with Kerry football stars Brian Kelly and James O’Donoghue to launch a golf classic in his memory. The classic, which takes place at Mahony’s Point on Saturday, September 3, will be staged in aid of Kerry Hospice Foundation. Seani, who passed away after a short illness, borne bravely, in September of 2015, was a keen golfer and member of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. Now a group of friends of Seani and his wife Margaret have come together to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. “In doing so, we decided that it would be a fitting remembrance to hold the golf classic in memory of Seani and contribute to the great work of this Kerry charity,” said Seani’s friend Brian Moriarty. The entry fee is €240 for a team of four or you can sponsor a tee box for €70. Tee times are available from 7.30am to 3.30pm. A limited number of team spaces are still available. A VERY memorable evening was held recently in the Killarney Men’s Shed which was filmed by “Irish TV” for broadcast on next Wednesday, August 10, at 7.30pm on Channel 191 on Sky. The programme is called “Kerry County Matters”. The evening kicked off with songs and music from the Killarney School of Music which was conducted by their inspiring tutor, Padraig Buckley. “This was a brilliant beginning to the evening and the Shed members wish to express their thanks to Padraig and all the group for taking the time to attend,” said Padraig O’Sullivan of Killarney Men’s Shed. “This was followed by food which was prepared by the Ross Café and our thanks to all involved for their excellent service. “The event would not have been possible without the many beautifully crafted items which were so meticulously fashioned by the members and made an outstanding display.”

Community sets wheels in motion to help buy wheelchair-accessible bus KILLARNEY woman Agnes Rooney decided to get in gear to take action when she discovered many members of the local community face difficulty in going about their daily lives because of the lack of wheelchair-accessible transport. Agnes is on a mission to raise funds for a bus for the Kerry Parents & Friends Association. “I have a sister, Mairead, who has intellectual difficulties, and who unfortunately lost most of her mobility a couple of years ago,” said Agnes. “She now has to have a wheelchair-accessible bus to go to work each day. I realised there was a need for funding when the bus arrived for Mairead one morning and the wheelchair access lift didn’t work. When I enquired about this, I was told that the fleet of 17 buses are deteriorating with no funding for replacement.” Agnes added: “These buses take Mairead and her friends to work, home, hospital appointments, social training, respite and holidays to name but a few. They travel all over Kerry and truly support them and their families in ways that the greater community may not understand.” The buses provide a vital service for home support, respite and everyday activities for people with intellectual disabilities all over the county, said Agnes. “We would deeply appreciate your support in helping the most vulnerable in our local community,” she added. With the help of fellow locals, including former Kerry Parents & Friends CEO Tony Darmody, Conor Hennigan, Denis Casey, Gabhan O’Loughlin and Ger Counihan, Agnes swept into action to organise a series of fundraisers. The first event, a golf classic, will take place on October 1, at Beaufort Golf Club. It is €240 for a team of four and there will be prizes galore and a raffle on the day. "Tee boxes are available and of course if you are not a golfer, all donations would be very much appreciated. Thank you to everyone for your help to date," said Agnes. Contact Agnes Rooney on 087-9865258 for further details.

Dóchas members take a bow in library FROM Bloomsday to Bastille Day, a production staged at Killarney Library in recent times offered audiences a feast of music, song, poetry and drama. Words and Music in the Library was the title of the series, presented by Dóchas Drama Group. “We have had the usual research on costumes, hairstyles and timelines. We have explored writings from Moliere to Eamon Kelly, songs from Thomas Moore to Ronnie Moore and poetry across the ages,” said Mary Murphy of Dóchas. “We have been reminded of the richness of literature, the entertainment value of humorous pieces and the necessity of new writing. “Our explorations in preparation for Bloomsday revealed the length, breadth and depth of the works of James Joyce. “It was special to hear Brid Sugrue read a story from the repertoire of her brother, Eamon Kelly and her own poem in his memo-

ry of him. “The members of Dóchas Drama wish to thank Eamon Browne and his staff at Killarney Library as well as the loyal audiences. It has been a great pleasure for us to have been joined by a number of our talented and professional friends along the way. “Grace Foley delighted us all with songs from her forthcoming album and some of her personal favourites. Her voice, accompanied by Noel O'Sullivan filled the room and sent us home with a song in our hearts and joy in our steps. “Sean Treacy's exceptional skill on the guitar enthralled us and reminded us, not only of the talent in our midst but of the delights and possibilities of the guitar. “Ronnie Moore, equally talented with her paintbrush, entertained us with some of her own compositions accompanying herself on guitar.”

Road repairs in Killarney

THE following works are about to commence in the Killarney town area of the Killarney Municipal District – footpath repairs at Scrahan Court (€7000), loops for the traffic lights at Woodlawn Junction (€1000), and repairs for the pedestrian crossing at the Park Road Roundabout. Friary youth club and folk group members turn back time A REAL whistle-stop trip back in time was on the cards last weekend as members of the Franciscan Friary folk group and youth club gathered for a reunion in The Dromhall Hotel on Friday. Carmel Lanigan, a past member, said she has many happy memories of being involved in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service-run group. “It was a great place to meet when we were growing up, with a lot of activities and visits to other youth clubs,” she said. Another past member of the youth club, Donal Whitty O’Sullivan, still has his membership card from the club from 1970. “I had great times there and have so many fond memories. Through the encouragement of Brother Victor, Brother Luke and Fr Vivian, the youth club was started up,” said Donal. “We had our own tennis court, basketball court, openair swimming pool (which was covered in over a period of time), sports room with table tennis, ring board and various board games. The record player was in big demand too, with all the latest hits from the 1970s. But most of all, and my favourite, we had our own soccer pitch where unfortunately the car park is today.” He added: “We had access to the Aras Phádraig as well, where we had hops, shows and indoor activities. We went to many movies there when it was run by the Abbey Cinema. Well done to all involved for rekindling great memories from the past.”

Talented Tom takes a bow with Untold Stories KILLARNEY singer-songwriter Tom Lucey wowed his audience in the INEC Acoustic Club last Friday night with yet another compelling performance. Tom’s heartfelt lyrics and mesmerising delivery have become his trademark and were a real crowd-pleaser as he launched his EP Untold Stories, a year after his sold-out concert in the same venue. The eagerly anticipated recording was produced by Brendan O’Connor, in Little Dylan Studios.

Acclaimed Kerry and Killarney band Truly Diverse also perform on the new CD and shared the stage with Tom last night. Truly Diverse consists of Kieran Healy, Anthony O’Connor, Andrew Doyle, Brendan O’Connor and Patrick O’Connor. Tracey Kerins and Aoibhe O’Connor provided backing vocals on the night. Aine Carroll from Cork, who appeared on The Voice UK last year, was the support act. Tom Lucey.

Lough Lein makes a splash as international destination THE Irish team reeled in catch of the day as it won the prestigious Four Nations Youth International Fly Fishing Competition on Killarney’s Lough Lein this week. Galway native Ciaran Flaherty won the best overall angler prize. The prestigious event, which dates back to 1985, attracted some of the world’s leading young angling experts. The hosting of the competition, in which Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales vie for honours, is rotated annually and Killarney was chosen as the location for this year’s tournament. Anglers for all teams must be under the age of 18 years to participate in the event and though there is no lower age limit for participation in the event, in recent years some participants have been aged as young as 12 years of age. All four teams stayed at Randles Hotel on the Muckross Road. Tom Randles, general manager, Randles Hotel, said: “We were delighted to have been chosen to host all the teams participating in this year’s event. “Randles Hotel has previously hosted teams participating in both the ladies and men’s International and European Fly Fishing Competitions in previous years, but this was our first youth event we have hosted run by the Trout Anglers Federation of Ireland, and we were delighted to welcome them to Killarney.” The event concluded with a gala dinner and prize presentation at the hotel on Wednesday evening, with due pomp and ceremony as each team was led into the room by a piper.

Camel spotted wandering into the west MOTORISTS outside Killorglin did a double-take on Tuesday afternoon, greeted by the singular sight of a camel wandering about on the road. No, it wasn’t a desert-style mirage, and Sue Carr proved on the ball as she captured the dromedary on camera. She snapped two photographs of the four-legged wanderer which were shared on the Radio Kerry Facebook page. A circus was already in town and Puck Fair is due to start next week, but is the truth stranger yet…..that Kerry has proved to be an appealing homestead for a few rogue camels? Big day out for Muireann and Michael BY EVE KELLIHER

T

HE Spa GAA Club flag flew high in Ballybunion recently as newlyweds Dr Muireann Quane and Michael O’Donoghue emerged from St John’s Church in the town as newlyweds. Among over 300 guests wishing the bride and groom well on their big day were Michael’s club and teammates. Michael, from Gortdromakerrie, Muckross, popped the question to Muireann in Nice, France, in June 2015. Just over a year later, the couple exchanged vows in the bride’s hometown of Ballybunion. Fr Kieran O’Brien, Killarney parish administrator, led the wedding Mass. Fr Kieran had previously officiated at the wedding ceremonies of both Michael’s brother Hugh and sister Mary. “Fr Kieran was also the chaplain attached to Coláiste Ide while I attended,” said Muireann. Muireann, the daughter of Nóra and Pat Joe Quane, and Michael, the son of Margaret O’Donoghue and the late Hugh Anthony O'Donoghue, first met in their final year at University College Cork. Guests travelled from across Ireland as well as from Canada, Dubai and Australia for the wedding, with the reception taking place in the Listowel Arms Hotel. “The dance floor was busy all night thanks to the entertainment provided by Limerick-based band Acoutra and DJ Niall ‘Botty’ O'Callaghan,” said Muireann. Killarney photographer Padraig Healy captured the wedding on camera, including a photo-shoot on the Castle Green in Ballybunion, adjacent to the cliffs. Lucas Machowski and his team from LM Wedding Videography also committed the event to film. “They got some wonderful drone footage of Ballybunion on what was a beautiful day weather-wise,” added the bride. Muireann’s four sisters Seána, Ciara, Nonie and Niamh, were her bridesmaids while Michael’s brother John was best man with two friends and teammates from Spa GAA Club, Niall O’Mahony and Andrew Garnett, as groomsmen. Michael, a solicitor, works with Pat F O’Connor & Co in Killarney and Muireann is a doctor based in University Hospital Kerry in Tralee. The newlyweds honeymooned in Rome.

Killarney Magazine offers a sparkling reflection of our town AS ANY bookworm will tell you, choosing the perfect perch will always enhance your reading experience. And Laura Murphy, Firies, couldn’t have found a more apt spot for enjoying her first read of the Killarney Magazine than a rock on scenic Lough Lein. As she leafed through this free, glossy publication – Killarney’s first premium tourism guide – Laura felt at one with her surroundings, which are beautifully captured in its pages. Laura and her twin sister Sarah launched the new Killarney Magazine last week in a photoshoot with Sally MacMonagle and it has certainly proved a double-whammy success itself, appealing to both locals and visitors alike. The team at Killarney Advertiser is delighted to present readers in Killarney and from across the globe with this collection of top-class features and eye-catching photographs. A riveting read, this glossy, free magazine showcases our town to dazzling effect and is a page-turningly good read, sharing as it does sought-after insider knowledge and hidden gems. “We noticed that there was no premium visitor magazine that captured the uniqueness of the our beautiful town. It is very much of Killarney featuring local writers, photographers and designers. Feedback has been amazing since we published last week,” said Aidan Quirke, business development manager of Killarney Advertiser and Killarney Magazine. “We are planning for next season’s publication already.” Killarney Magazine offers a trip back in time thanks to illuminating pieces that history buffs will enjoy (for instance, Breda Joy’s wonderful overview of the history of Muckross House). But it is also something that will help you keep your finger on the pulse with insider tips and information on making the most of a visit to Killarney. We hope we will also tempt you to veer off the beaten track to make your experience of our town and it surrounds your very own. An excellent resource for the traveller and a handy reference guide for local residents, Killarney Magazine emerged from a pool of local talent and it features leading writers from what is a world-renowned literary and cultural hotbed. The magazine, designed by Damien Switzer, has been distributed throughout Killarney, including hotels, the tourist office and a host of visitor attractions. You can also check out its website at http://www.killarneymagazine.com

Home From Home donations always accounted for and audited THE board of Beaufort Special Needs Project Ltd, trading as Home From Home, wishes to advise our benefactors that our accounts are available for view to any interested party of member of the public. Due to recent events in the area of charities, we wish to assure all and sundry that all donations have been accounted for and audited. Our charity is run by a voluntary board who receive no renumeration. We are partly funded by the HSE and Pobal and governance and compliance is carried out in association with them. We receive advice and assistance from Kerry County Childcare. Our annual cost of transporting

the children from St Francis Special School in Beaufort and from the centre to Kenmare is €12,000. As a result we are in the process of endeavouring to purchase a vehicle for this purpose, therefore reducing the cost, in the long-term. We ask for he continued support of the general public to enable us continue to retain the service for the benefit of the children and their families. ‘As the largest tourist town in Ireland, if not in Europe, Killarney should have its own town council’ I AM calling for the reinstatement of town councils to all towns with a population of 7,000 and upwards. At a recent meeting of Kerry County Council, I urged the council to call on the Government to reinstate town councils, with immediate effect, to all such towns. Following on from this, Kerry County Council has written to the Minister For Housing, Planning, Community And Local Government, Simon Coveney, requesting him to reinstate town councils to towns with a population of 7,000 and upwards. The decision to remove town councils should never have been taken and has proved to be a detrimental measure for Killarney, Tralee And Listowel. It is very difficult to comprehend why the largest tourist town in Ireland, if not in Europe, for a town of its size, Killarney does not have its own town council. All-Ireland football quarter-finals

Seniors power on for date with Dublin or Donegal

THE Kerry senior team is through to its fourth All-Ireland semi-final in a row following an 11-point victory over a gallant Clare side. The quarter-finals at Croke Park on Sunday last finished on a scoreline of Kerry 2-16 to Clare’s 0-11. Once Donnchadh Walsh struck for their first goal after 20 minutes or so, Kerry were on their way to victory and the superb goal by Darran O’Sullivan six minutes into the third quarter cemented that passage. Thereafter it was merely a case of how much the Kerry victory margin would be as the Kerry management ran the bench with Dr Crokes man Tony Brosnan coming in to make his championship debut. The four-week break to the semi-final is not ideal, but the silver lining is that it will allow injured players such as Johnny Buckley and Colm Cooper additional time to recover from injury. Kerry, of course, will not know their semi-final opponents until tomorrow at least when Dublin and Donegal clash in the quarterfinals in Croke Park (6pm). Kerry's Darran O'Sullivan.

Mighty minors march centre stage THE sharpshooting Kerry minor team remain in line for a third successive All-Ireland title after notching an impressive victory (1-24 to 2-10) over Ulster runners-up Derry at Croke Park on Sunday last. The concession of two first-half goals to a physically stronger Derry side meant that Kerry retired on level terms at the interval despite having kicked a succession of outstanding scores during that opening period with centre forward Sean O’Shea particularly effective from long range. However, Kerry tightened up considerably at the back in the second half while up front, they continued to kick some delightful scores with the two Davids, Shaw and Clifford, kicking ten between them to outscore their rivals by 1-12 to 0-4 in that second period. So Kerry march on and they now take on Leinster champions Kildare in the semifinal that will be played as a curtainraiser to the Kerry v Dublin/Donegal senior semi final on Sunday, August 28. Kildare qualified for the semi-final following a six-point victory over Kerry's David Clifford with Padraig McGrogan and Conor McCluskey of Derry Connaught runners-up Mayo on Monday in the Electric Ireland All-Ireland Minor Football Championship quarter-fievening last. nal. Outcry as memorial to popular Killarney man is damaged Back, Enda Walshe and Ann Hartnett, front, Patricia Buckley and Ann O’Sullivan examine the damaged plaque.

‘For bad things to happen all that is needed is for good people to do nothing’ “SAVE our school” is the rallying cry of the parents of pupils at Two Mile (Cahooreigh) National School. Parents in the area have called on the Diocese of Kerry as well as the Department of Education to ensure the school remains open. Two Mile NS is poised to become a one-teacher school in September, following a reduction in pupil numbers to 17 last year. Past pupil Lisa Casey, who is also a member of the local community with a young child, attended the public meeting to discuss the future of the school last November. “It was asked why the student numbers had dropped and it was explained that the demographics of the area meant that there were no children available to attend the school,” said Lisa. “This raised eyebrows among community members in attendance, particularly given the number of new houses in the area with young families.” It should also be noted that while, in recent years, the Two Mile was reducing from a three-teacher school with approximately 80 students to a two-teacher school with 17 students, multiple new school classrooms have been added to the surrounding schools, according to Lisa. “As a taxpayer and a parent I’m delighted to see Government expenditure on schools, but it frustrates and saddens me to think that the Two Mile School, a perfectly good three-classroom school, could be sitting empty,” she added. Community members carried out a survey of the immediate Two Mile School area. The results showed an overwhelming desire of those surveyed, to send their child/children to the school should certain changes occur, added Lisa. “It is sad when declining population leads to the closure of the post office, the church and the school,” she said. “This can destroy what is left of the local community. But don’t be fooled. That is not what is happening here. The community is strong and growing around the Two Mile. For bad things to happen all that is needed is for good people to do nothing.” Community members call for action on Two Mile School NS.

FRIENDS of the late Paddy Turner were disgusted on Tuesday morning to discover a plaque dedicated to his memory was seriously damaged. Calls by his pals for a memorial to the popular Killarney man came to fruition in March when a bench was erected in his name on the top of the High Street Paddy loved so well. The move had been backed by numerous members of the Killarney Municipal District and Paddy’s many friends. But on Tuesday it was discovered that the plaque, which bore the words immortalised by Paddy, “Nice morning, not a bad morning” and a note stating “This bench is dedicated to the memory of Paddy Turner 1948-2015” was irreparably bent out of shape. “I know this is an isolated incident and it’s not that Killarney is a bad town for incidents like this, but it’s a fright to God that someone would do this,” said Paddy’s friend Enda Walsh. Ann Hartnett, who works nearby, described the vandalism as the work of “blackguards”. Paddy’s death in March last year, following a brave battle with illness, prompted a huge outpouring of heartfelt tributes from across Killarney and beyond.

REACTION ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO VANDALISM

“Mindless thugs. There is no rearing on some people” “They've nothing else to do with their time; mindless people whoever did it” “Absolutely disgraceful someone knows who did this. So sorry to all those who were involved in organising the plaque”

Welcome for pipe replacement in Mill Road RESIDENTS of Mill Road will benefit from improvements to water mains in the area. Irish Water has allocated €44,000 for the replacement of 500 meters of existing two-inch mains with a new 80mm. pipe on the road. Welcoming the allocation, Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin said: “This important water mains upgrade work is due to commence in late August.” 05.08.16 Killarney Advertiser

Beauty SPOT

EVER feel like you need to be a practitioner of advanced yoga to achieve something even resembling a salon blowdry? I’ve given up bending my arms this way and that in an effort to emerge with sleek, polished tresses. But I needn’t have feared. The clever people behind Kérastase have come up with the game-changing Couture Styling L’Incroyable Blowdry, €25. So what’s so different about this potion and does it deserve a place on your dressing table? Well, it is designed to be a “reshapeable” heat lotion. What I love about it is it doesn’t cause that brittle, stiff, crispy and crunchy feel that is the unwelcome side effect of so many styling products. It is also designed to ensure your blowdry will last longer! L’Incroyable Blowdry is the result of more than five years of heat styling research at the L’Oréal Applied Research Labs in the US, and

it shows. It features a blend of non-sticky beeswax micro particles formulated with a strengthening agent. When applied onto damp hair the product forms a microscopic layer of active ingredients that are stimulated by heat. Once heat is applied and the micro particles melt, the style is locked in.,

Grace Notes Gaelic Roots is a captivating spectacle

Killarney music and singing teacher Grace Foley reviews Gaelic Roots

MY GOOD friend Tony O’Flaherty recently invited me to come and see Gaelic Roots: The Show. Tony is musical director of the show so I went with high expectations, which were well surpassed. The calibre and professionalism of all involved was evident from the outset, which immediately puts the audience at ease. It was a pleasure to watch a show where, not once, did I worry that a singer or musician would miss a note or that a dancer would miss a beat. “Confidence” can often be con-

sidered a dirty word in Ireland but it is absolutely vital in the performance world and is very present in this show. This combined with very high levels of 'showmanship' resulted in a captivating spectacle from beginning to end. For me, the show flew by and I was very disappointed when I realised it was coming to an end! The pieces of music and dances flowed seamlessly from one to the other and the minimal scripting meant that we got to know a little about the performers and got to enjoy lots of music.

In my opinion, there were a few highlights to the show on the night. One such highlight was a dual between Tony on bodhrán and a fantastic young dancer Tomas O Se. The energy in the room during this segment was electric and I thought my own mother was going to fly off her seat with excitement! My other main highlight was the performance of singer and harpist Aisling Urwin. Aisling's voice is so pure and true and you could hear a pin drop every time she finished singing. I would struggle to fault this show and would highly recommend that everyone go to discover their own Gaelic Roots. •Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

THE UNCOUNTABLE LAUGHTER OF THE SEA

IT HAS won rave reviews and The Uncountable Laughter of the Sea by Ballyheigue filmmaker Patrick O’Neill is running in Cinema Killarney weekly for the month of August. This is a 50-minute reflective film featuring the landscape and culture of Kerry in which the late Monsignor Paadraig O Fiannachta had a major involvement. It is definitely worth seeing on the big screen. The Sunday Independent gave the film a four-star review saying, “This is an hour-long immersion into something ethereal, woozy and visually unforgettable.” You can catch The Uncountable Laughter of the Sea at Cinema Killarney every Tuesday at 7pm until the end of August.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 12:32-48: The opening verses of this gospel invite us to ask ourselves what do we see as our purpose in life? What are our priorities? Is our heart set on material progress and advance, or do we have other priorities? What has helped you to appreciate that there is more to your life than earthly possessions and success? At times, one can sense in Jesus an urgency, as if he wanted to shake people and wake them up to take his words seriously. The parable has that tone: “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit.” When have you found that being alert enabled you to grasp a moment of opportunity that you might easily have missed, for instance, when a child or friend gives a hint that they would like to talk and a very meaningful conversation ensues. Another consideration that adds to the sense of urgency in the words of Jesus, is that we only have one life, and we do not know how long that will last. So Jesus calls us on us to live in the now and to treasure our time. Sometimes we can drift aimlessly through a day, and on other occasions use a day purposefully. What difference does that make, if any, to how you experience the day? John Byrne OSA

MUSINGS

“IF THE householder had known at what hour the burglar would come, he would not have let anyone break through the wall of his house.” (Luke 12:39) I used to think this line on the Gospel was fanciful, or that it belonged to another age. Thieves are more discreet than that, I thought, breaking in not through a wall but via an unguarded door or an open window. That was until I saw the first ATM robbery, when a bulldozer was used to break down the wall of a bank and remove the banklink machine, with all its money intact. It struck me then that the scriptures were well rooted, that the avarice in people’s hearts is timeless – as are the actions it leads to. People are not so different now from the folks Jesus observed. Then, as now, some begin with enthusiasm, but fall back to their former ways. And some come late in the day to the conclusion that Jesus was right, and act accordingly. Lord, teach me wisdom. Keep me from the avarice that leads to wrongdoing. Fr Bernard Cotter

THE DEEP END

WE DO not like to wait. Listening to a radio discussion recently about the ever-increasing role technology plays in our lives, one panellist described how her smartphone had become almost like an extension of her arm. We don’t know how to be alone or to have free time anymore, she lamented. If we’re waiting for a friend or family member, the slightest delay has us reaching for our phones to catch up on emails, social media or the latest news. Delayed flights, or food that doesn’t arrive promptly in a restaurant, can make us impatient and jittery. We have lost the art of waiting. Yet Jesus regularly emphasises the importance of waiting. But it is clear that it is not the sort of waiting where we can sit around scrolling through our phones – there is an art to it. We must be awake and dressed for action and have our lamps lit, ready to go. We must be ready to open the door to the master when he knocks. The “waiter” described in today’s Gospel is a devoted servant, eagerly awaiting his master’s return. We don’t know when Jesus will return, but we are called to live in constant vigilance and readiness. Let us not be found asleep on the job, or distracting ourselves with the trivial things in life! Kerry Rose Danielle O’Sullivan hitting the road to the Dome WE WISH our Kerry Rose Danielle O’Sullivan the very best as she makes the short trip from Killarney to the Dome for the Rose of Tralee International Festival. The Killarney native will be among 65 Roses from all over the world who will take part in this year’s extended festival, from August 17 to 23. Danielle’s club mates at Legion GAA Club are among her many supporters, as are her colleagues from the Killarney Grand Hotel. The 2016 Kerry Rose played football with Killarney Legion and on Wednesday night the club held a reception for Danielle where those wishing her well included her coach at juvenile level Paudie Breen. “We presented Danielle with good luck gifts from the club and sponsors,” said Enda Walshe, chairman, Killarney Legion. “Many thanks to Dave Randles of Randles Bros, Tina Moynihan of Lela Thai Spa, Sean Murphy of Lord Kenmare’s, Paul Trant of Keanes Jewellers and Ian Trant of Sewells Pharmacy who presented Danielle with her gifts, including her own

personalised Legion jersey. "The whole club wishes Danielle the very best of luck in the upcoming Rose of Tralee Festival.” The 23-year-old, a Master’s student at University of Limerick, said: “I feel so thankful and privileged to be given the opportunity to represent my county at this year’s Rose of Tralee, and look forward to the adventure ahead.” Prior to arriving in Tralee, Danielle will embark on a five-day tour taking in some of Ireland’s top tourism landmarks. The format for this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival has changed to allow every Rose travel to Tralee to enjoy the event in its entirety. Each Rose who takes part in the qualifying selections, also presented by Dáithí Ó Sé in the Dome, on either August 17 or 18, will find out on August 21 if she will be appearing on the televised selections on August 22 or 23. However, the Kerry Rose will be Kerry Rose Danielle O’Sullivan with Legion members and sponsors, front, Paul Trant of the only one guaranteed a place Keane’s Jewellers, and Tina Moynihan, Lela Thai Spa, back, Dave Randles, Randles Bros, on the live TV selection. The Provocateur Let’s be inspired by stylish Lisa’s stand against cyber bullies CYBER BULLYING is something we normally associate with teenagers but unfortunately it has become far too accepted among all ages. That’s why I applaud Lisa McGowan for taking a stylish stand during the week. Lisa, who was named the g Hotel & Spa Best Dressed Lady at the Galway Races, revealed how she was attacked by online trolls since she won the prestigious title. Her elation at her (well-deserved) win, when her flair for fashion saw her take home the €10,000 prize, turned to anger as nasty comments were posted about her on social media. But Ms McGowan proved more than a match for these mighty keyboard warriors. In a Facebook post, the chic winner, from Tullamore, Co Offaly, his back at those behind the appalling comments on her appearance. She said: “I've read lots of stuff about me over the last few days, horrible hurtful comments ‘droopy boob syndrome’, ‘should have worn a bra’, make-up atrocious, tangoed, satalite [sic] dish reception, fake Hollywood smile. Oh lads the list goes on. “You know what girls, I just don't get why some folk have to be so horrible, yep the keyboard warriors have been out over the last weekend and building themselves up by trying to tear me down.” She added: “To all of you cyber bullies out there... P**S OFF AND GET A LIFE. Would you like to be on the receiving end? “I'm thick skinned and I'm laughing at the good of it, me and my A cups. No chance of them drooping it's me fat ass I'm worried about.” Ms McGowan noted that many who fall victim to online trolling may not be able to handle the abuse. “I'll be forgotten about tomorrow and some other poor unfortunate will be at the receiving end of it tomorrow.” She stated: “Lots of other girls are more sensitive so F**KING THINK before you unleash your nastiness on your keypad. Self harm, depression, anorexia, suicide...Yep lots of you HARMING others out there with your comments!!!!!” Insurance broker Lisa is about to launch her own fashion business Strawberry And Lime and her inspiration for her winning outfit was her late brother. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + ‘PEAK FRIENDSHIP’?

Scientists believe they may have found the answer. There is a specific age when a person will be at their ‘most popular’, according to new research, with the amount of friends we have decreasing once we are past it. Our social networks shrink from the age of 25, the data reveals; with the pool of friends a person has getting smaller and smaller as the years go by. The phone records of more than 3.2 million mobile users in Europe were analysed for the study by researchers at Aalto and Oxford universities. They found that those aged 25 and under talked more to friends than any other age group, looking at who how often they called a person and the length of each call, with our social circles decreasing with age. Older people spent more of their free time socialising with a small group of family or friends, the research added. “Age and gender are two important factors that play crucial roles in the way organisms allocate their social effort,” researchers explain in the study published in Royal Society Open Science. “Our results indicate that these aspects of human behaviour are strongly related to age and gender such

that younger individuals have more contacts and, among them, males more than females.” They found social circles tend to decrease until the age of 45 when the number stabilizes for about a decade. After 55, there is again a steady decrease. So bad news if you are already past the age of 25, but good news if you are already over that age and don’t like socialising very much. Dr Sarah Gomillion, a Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen, said the research “echoes other research on face-to-face social networks that suggests that our social networks shrink as we age”. “The big life events that usually come with age, such as marriage and parenthood, lead people to invest more of their time socialising with just a few close family members and friends,” she explained on The Conversation. “Later in life, retirement, health issues and the death of partners and friends can leave people socially isolated, although this can sometimes inspire older people to engage more with their community through volunteering and religious participation.”

Loss of 70 jobs in Kenmare ‘a savage blow’ SEVENTY jobs are to be lost in Kenmare after the announcement on Wednesday that local company Deputy Danny Healy-Rae. Kenmare Select would close. The family-owned business was founded by chef Remy Benoit and was a major employer in the area. TD Danny Healy-Rae said the closure was “a savage blow” to the workers and the whole community. He called on the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O'Connor and the Minister for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen to intervene and see what can be done. “Twenty-five jobs to a place like Kenmare is the same as 500 jobs in Dublin,” he said. “As a deputy six miles out the road and local to the area I know that this is a savage loss to the local community.”

Views From Kerry And Around The World Cheers! Could beer cure cancer? Scientists at the University of Idaho think so. Researchers suggest a key ingredient in beer could be used in the fight against cancer and inflammatory diseases. Acids called humulones and lupulones, which are found in hops, possess the ability to halt bacterial growth and disease, and scientists hope to find a way to extract these compounds or synthesise them in a lab in order to develop active agents for cancertreating pharmaceuticals. But what other little known health benefits are hiding in your pint glass? Last year, a study suggested that the risk of developing kidney stones decreases with increasing beer consumption. Finnish researchers, led by Dr. Tero Hirvonen of the National Public Health Institute of Helsinki, used their detailed study of 27,000 middleaged men to conclude that “each bottle of beer consumed per day was estimated to reduce risk by 40 per cent”. The study authors noted that both the water and alcohol found in beer are shown to increase urine flow and dilute urine, thereby reducing the risk of stones forming. Alcohol may also “increase the excretion of calcium,” the prime constituent of kidney stones, said Hirvonen. A research team at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania found that dark ales and stouts can reduce the incidence of heart attacks. Atherosclerosis - when artery walls become furred-up with cholesterol and other fatty substances - is known to cause heart problems, but Dr Joe Vinson, a professor of chemistry and lead author on a 2000 study, revealed that beer can cut the risk of this disease by as much as half. However, the researchers were keen to add that moderation was key. Studies by both Harvard Medical School and the American Stroke Association have shown that people who drink moderate amounts of beer can cut their risk of strokes by up to 50pc, compared to non-drinkers. Ischaemic strokes are the most common type of stroke. They occur when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. However, when you drink beer, your arteries become flexible and blood flow improves significantly. As a result, no blood clots form, and your risk of having a stroke drops exponentially. Beer is known to contain high levels of silicon, an element that promotes bone growth. But you have to get the balance right. Academics at Tufts University in Massachusetts found that whilst one or two glasses of beer a day could significantly reduce your risk of fracturing bones, more than that would actually raise the risk of breakages. So be careful when you visit the pub: if you drink too much, your bones will be weakened and those drunken night-time tumbles could result in nasty fractures. Drink the right

amount, however, and you’ll walk home with your bones and dignity intact. In 2011, Harvard researchers found that middle-aged men who drink one or two glasses of beer each day appear to reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 25pc. Dr Michel Joosten, a visiting professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, studied 38,000 middle-aged men, and concluded that the alcohol content in beer increases insulin sensitivity, which helps prevent diabetes. Additionally, beer is a good source of soluble fibre - a dietary material that helps to control blood sugar and plays an important role in the diet of people suffering from diabetes. Studies dating back to 1977 have suggested that beer drinkers can be up to 23pc less likely to develop cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. However, despite the statistics speaking for themselves – one study surveyed over 365,000 people – it is unknown why moderate drinking can have a beneficial effect. One theory suggests that the well-known cardiovascular benefits of moderate alcohol consumption, such as raising good cholesterol, also can improve blood flow in the brain and thus brain metabolism. The silicon content of beer could also be responsible. Silicon is thought to protect the brain from the harmful effects of aluminium in the body – one of the possible causes of Alzheimer’s. Beer is a natural nightcap. Ales, stouts and lagers have been found to stimulate the production of dopamine, a compound that may be prescribed to insomnia sufferers by a doctor, in the brain. According to research undertaken at the Indiana University School of Medicine, simply tasting beer increases the amount of dopamine in the brain - and thus make drinkers feel calmer and more relaxed. However, the academics clarified that these effects are achieved after only a taste, and so a paltry 15 millilitre serving is all you need - the equivalent of one tablespoon of beer. Too much and your vision will get blurry, but consume just the right amount of beer and your eyes will benefit. Researchers at the University of Western Ontario found that the antioxidants found in beer, particularly ales and stouts, protected against mitochondrial damage. Cataracts are formed when the mitochondria - parts of a cell responsible for converting glucose into the energy - of the eye’s outer lens are damaged. Antioxidants protect the mitochondria against this damage, and therefore the study authors recommend one drink a day to keep the eye doctor away.

Man held after woman dies and five injured in London stabbing attacks A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was killed and five injured in a knife attack in Russell Square, central London. Police were called on Wednesday to reports of a man injuring people, including a woman in her 60s who died. A 19-year-old man was arrested at 22:39 after a Taser was discharged by an officer. The Met said mental health was a "significant factor" in events. London Mayor Sadiq Khan called for the public to remain "calm and vigilant". Two other women and three men received various injuries in the attack, Scotland Yard said. Two from the group remain in hospital while the other three people have since been discharged, the force added. After receiving treatment in hospital the arrested man is now in police custody. The Met's assistant commissioner for specialist operations, Mark Rowley, said the force's homicide command was leading the investigation into the attack, with support from the counterterrorism unit.

KILLARNEY ATHLETIC TO HONOUR FOUNDER KILLARNEY ATHLETIC FC is set to honour Don (Donal) Harrington with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque acknowledging him as the founder of the club in 1965. Don will be attending the event in the club’s Woodlawn ground where he will also present the Monica Harrington Memorial Cup in memory of his late wife on this the first anniversary of her death. “The Memorial Cup will be presented to the lady chosen for her outstanding commitment to the club,” said club spokesman Mike O’Sullivan. “This is the second year of the presentation with Mary McCarrick being the first recipient of the award in 2015. As a 19-year-old, Don joined the Killarney Garda division in 1965 and this proved to be the milestone for the foundation of the first organised and affiliated soccer club in town. “Don’s posting to Killarney was never intended to be for the promotion of soccer in the area at a time when the ‘infamous ban’ existed on those who played and promoted the ‘playing of foreign games’, but his enthusiasm for the game linked to his dedication to community service brought him in contact with the youth in Killarney,” added Mike. “And the rest as they say is now documented history on the foundation of the club from such small and humble beginnings.” Don later worked with the West Yorkshire Police force where he served for 35 years, reaching the rank of superintendent. The unveiling of the plaque and presentation of the award will take place in the Killarney Athletic Club grounds in Woodlawn on Thursday, August 11, at 7.30pm and all are welcome to attend.

Let’s paint the town purple this weekend KILLARNEY is the proud bearer of a Purple Flag, which signifies that it offers a well-managed evening and night-time experience. This weekend, Friday, August 5, and Saturday, August 6, the award’s assessors will visit Killarney in what will be their first evaluation since 2014 and all are urged to ensure our town presents the best possible impression. Paul O'Neill, chairperson, Killarney Purple Flag Working Group, said: “We have been informed that the bar is set quite high so Killarney really needs offer that welcome for which we are so famous.” Of particular importance is any business operating from 5pm to 5am. Members of the Killarney Purple Flag working group will be accompanying the assessors on Saturday evening and night and seeing all that Killarney has to offer. “We will be visiting several businesses and services throughout the evening,” added Paul. The working group urged businesses to make a special effort to offer a safe and welcoming environment. “Licensed premises should ensure frontline staff and security personnel are welcoming and informed. We need to minimise any glass on the street, so be vigilant of this,” said Paul. Another tip is where possible, add a splash of purple to your premises, whether through lighting, purple flowers on tables, or wearing a purple shirt. “Thankfully we are all very busy at this time of year but please make the effort this weekend. The awarding of the Purple Flag was fantastic and significant in attracting families to Killarney,” said Paul. “It is vital that we maintain our status and with a small contribution from each business I'm sure that we will succeed.”

Kerry hoteliers concerned despite growth in overseas visitors THE president of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, Terence Mulcahy, warned that risks due to the Brexit referendum decision could jeopardise the continued recovery of the tourism sector. The latest Central Statistics Office figures show a 13% increase in trips to the country during the first half of the year. Visitor numbers from Britain are up by 16%. The rest of Europe is showing an increase of 11% while the number of visitors from North America is up by 15%. “Hoteliers in Kerry are very concerned that economic uncertainty and a weaker Sterling could impact on future inbound tourism from the UK, which is Ireland’s largest overseas market – accounting for over 40% of trips to the country each year,” said Mr Mulcahy. “We are in uncharted territory, with Sterling having dropped by 16% against the Euro compared to this time last year, reducing the spending power of visitors from Britain and Northern Ireland. A sustained weakness in Sterling would present a serious challenge for our local tourism industry as we compete to attract visitors and holidaymakers. Mr Mulcahy noted that the risks associated with Brexit are now being reflected in forecasts for the UK economy, with growth being revised downwards and the prospect of a UK recession increasing. “Recent reports indicate that the Brexit result is already taking a toll on the underlying UK economy in terms of business sentiment and consumer confidence. This is likely to have a knock-on effect on consumer spending and the numbers of British people travelling overseas. Early reports of similar falls in Irish business and consumer sentiment are also worrying given how highly sensitive the domestic tourism market is to consumer confidence.” The Kerry IHF president added: “The vast majority of our members are concerned about the impact Brexit will have on their businesses over the next 12 months and the wider implications for the industry.” Tourism has recovered in recent years following the downturn and is now a major contributor to our local economy, generating €380 million in annual revenues and supporting 12,000 jobs in Kerry.

Two callouts for Kerry Mountain Rescue team THE Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) were involved in two operations within hours of one another last Saturday. Fourteen members of the team were called to the rescue of a walker at Torc Waterfall that afternoon on 3pm. “The walker, an American lady, slipped and fell 100 feet down a steep embankment, sustaining shoulder and other injuries,” said Alan Wallace of KMRT. The incident occurred at the viewing area near to the top of Torc Waterfall. The team provided first aid at the scene before stretchering the walker up the embankment and to the ambulance. She was transported to University Hospital Kerry.” The callout concluded at 5.30pm. The casualty, a teenage girl, sustained lower leg injuries while walking on a trail approximately 1km behind the school. She was treated at the scene by the ambulance paramedics before being stretchered across the rough ground to the ambulance by KMRT and Dingle Coast Guard. “The girl was part of a large German Scout group walking the Dingle Way. Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle win Rally Finland LAST weekend saw Irish rallying stars take two steps of the WRC Rally Finland Podium. Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle claimed an historic victory in Rally Finland on Sunday last, securing their third WRC victory and second this season after a dominant drive in their Citroen DS3 WRC. Local hero Jari-Matti Latvala was unable to claim a hattrick of victories on their home rally settling for second in their Polo R WRC, while Waterford driver Craig Breen and co-driver Scott Martin, Britain, claimed their first-ever WRC podium by finishing third overall in their Citroen DS3 WRC. Craig is the son of Irish rally legend Ray Breen, a national champion in Irish rallying and a regular participant in the Rally of the Lakes. Craig began karting in 1999 and began rallying in 2007. For his achievements he was crowned Young Irish Rally Driver of the Year and received the Billy Coleman Award in 2009. Citroen boss Yves Matton says he will have to think “hard” now about the team's line-up for 2017 in the wake of Craig Breen's sensational third place finish last weekend on Rally Finland. Breen ran in the top-seven throughout and despite coming under pressure from Ott Tanak and Thierry Neuville, withstood the onslaught in fine fashion. Indeed the Waterford driver secured his first WRC stage win in the penultimate test as he battled to keep Neuville behind and retain third, and all this in only his fifth event in a World Rally Car. Elated winning driver Meeke said: “It will take a few days and weeks for it to properly sink in, but you almost dream that someday you could do something special in the World Rally Championship. In terms of rally wins I don’t know how you can get much better than this because, yeah, the ultimate goal is obviously to try and be World Rally Champion but like I said, in terms of rally wins and to do it this way, to really make a difference on the most famous stage in the World Championship…” Co-driver Paul Nagle summed up the success by saying: “It’s been a fantastic weekend. I think we started out on the right foot and all weekend there was no looking back. Yesterday evening (Saturday), like we did in Portugal, we consolidated our position and today was a good steady Sunday drive through the stages with no big dramas.” In the FIA World Rally Championship, Championship leader Sébastien Ogier failed to score points for the first time since Spain 2015 but the reigning World Champion continues to lead the standings by 45 points. It would be a massive boost to see Irish rallying stars so well represented in the 2017 WRC, driving for a team such as the successful Citroen Team.

On top of the world: Paul Nagle and Kris Meeke.

Peugeot 205 GTI sold for a world record price THIS Peugeot 205 GTI just sold for a world record price. We have been witnessing for some years now record auction prices in the high-end classic car market, that trend is changing. The humble 80s hot hatch is getting in on the act. A 1989 – admittedly mint – Peugeot 205 GTI has just sold at the Silverstone Auction’s classic sale for the sum of €36,968. It’s €15k more than its estimate, and considerably more than anyone in their right minds might spend

on a small French hatchback from 1989. It is, apparently, a world record for a 205 GTI at auction. But then this is a 205 GTI, right? The most holy of hot hatches, and in this example, one that has covered a mere 7,986 miles from new and with just one owner during its comparatively easy life. Time to dust down that 80s classic parked in the back of the shed. It is anyone’s guess how much it will fetch….

Spa 1966 O’Donoghue Cup reunion SPA GAA CLUB will be kicking a football back through the decades as next Thursday, August 11, when the surviving members of the team which won the club’s first O’Donoghue Cup title reunites. A half-century after the historic occasion, they will be guests of honour at a celebration in Spa’s clubhouse along with representatives of their teammates who have sadly passed away during the intervening years. “The win has always been regarded as a historic occasion for the club,” said spokesman John Kelly. “While there was a GAA club in Lissivigeen dating back to the 1920s which remained active in East Kerry competitions until it became defunct in 1947, in 1948 it was decided to establish the current Spa club.” While still the club was still in its

infancy, this team won both the junior and senior East Kerry competitions in 1948 and 1949. Due to emigration, retirements and other factors Spa became temporarily defunct for a four-year period but after a Spa/Glenflesk amalga-

mation won the East Kerry minor league. In 1963 a decision was taken to revive the Spa club in 1966 and as happened in 1948 the team won the East Kerry senior league for the O’Donoghue Cup in the first year of

its revival on August 28, 1966. “At the September meeting of the EKB in 1966 a decision was taken to initiate an knockout championship style competition and again Spa proved victorious in this competition,” said John. “For the record this format has prevailed for the O'Donoghue Cup during the interim 50 years during which Spa won the cup on a further nine occasions." A member of the 1966 team, Fr Michael O’Donoghue, will celebrate Mass for all deceased members of the Spa GAA Club, including those who were on the 1966 panel, at 7pm. “A social evening will follow during which memories and anecdotes will be shared,” added John.

You are always on our minds And when we talk about you It’s always of happy times. No one knows the heartache Of what you passing cost But God in all His glory Gained what we have lost.

Sadly missed by his wife Maeve and family. Forever in our thoughts and prayers.

prayer to ST. joseph O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett can reflect on his Captain’s Prize weekend with great pride and tremendous satisfaction, everything went extremely well and even the benign weather obliged despite a forecast to the contrary. The prize presentation evening and festivities commenced at 7.00pm on Sunday, when a drinks reception was followed by a buffet meal which was enjoyed by the over 150 Members and Guests who were in attendance. The fun began at 9.00pm when the Golf Club Male Choir under the guiding baton of Russ Browne entertained all with their renditions of some old favourites. During the course of the speeches there was much mention of the “friendly” rivalry between the Dr. Croke’s and the Legion, Football Club’s Captain Liam having been a stalwart of The Dr. Croke’s for many years, and a former Captain of that Club, even the choir seemed very mindful of this, as they did not finish off their repertoire with their usual number being “Goodbye” from the “Desert Song” as it contains in its chorus line the words “we’ll join the legion”. The highlight of the evening’s entertainment followed when “Celtic Steps” took to the stage, and the floor, their principal, and Club Member David Rea led the troupe in what turned out to be an enthralling and hugely entertaining 40 minutes of music, song and the most spectacular dancing ever witnessed in Killarney Golf Club, and suffice to say that they received a standing ovation from their packed audience who were vying with each other for a good vantage point to watch the mesmerising display of Irish dancing. Club Vice Captain and “Master of Ceremonies” for the evening Declan McCarthy, then took to the stage and introduced Lady Captain Mary O’Rourke, who, of course, continued with the humorous banter of Dr. Croke’s Vs. Legion and finished off by making a presentation of a beautiful bouquet of flowers to Liam’s wife, Catherine. Declan then followed up with his own speech, when he outlined much of Liam’s career both on the football field and the golf course, and it contained

some very witty anecdotes regarding Liam, and his boyhood days in Mangerton View, and continued with the raillery about the rivalry between the opposing football teams in Killarney town. Declan then introduced Liam, and Liam thanked everybody who had helped out in any way towards making his weekend the success which it undoubtedly had been, Enda Murphy and staff on the course, Paul Cotter for the mid round snack, Cormac Flannery and all Club house staff, Club President Arthur Hanley, Lady Captain, Mary O’Rourke, and his Men’s Committee. Liam paid special mention to his family, and in particular to his wife Catherine, who along with their daughters Aisling and Niamh were there to enjoy the evening, but the presence of his dad Con Hartnett was greeted by a resounding round of applause, Con being one half of the duo of “Con and John’s, Killarney Hardware store” in College Street for many years. Over 300 entered for the Men’s section of the competition, and despite some very inaccessible pin positions, it was indicated that the person who made some of those selections must have been having a very bad day indeed when making those selections, The competition was won by Ian Cronin with a great score of 41 points, Ian mentioned in his eloquent speech in accepting the first prize, that he had been preparing for 22 years to make that speech, and Ian dedicated much of what he said to his father, the ever so popular Tim Cronin, who is currently recuperating from surgery, and we all wish Tim a full and speedy recovery. The Competition results are as follows 1st Ian Cronin (8) 41 points 2nd Ian Prendergast (15) 40 points 3rd Michael Maher (6) 40 points best gross Greg Lanigan (4) 37 points 4th Eoin Reen (22) 39 points 5th Conor Stack (11) 39 points 6th Chris Twomey (10) 39 points Standard scratch was 34 points on Saturday, and 35 points on Sunday. The Youths section competition was won by Darren Mulcahy with 38 points, and Ryan Kelliher was in second place also with 38 points, but Darren had a slightly better finish to win the prize. Saturday the 6th of August will see the staging of the Club’s Senior Scratch Cup. The competition on Sunday the 7th of August will be a singles competition on Mahony’s Point.

on the ball

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Ogie, I am telling you now Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the Kerry seniors and minors’ performance in the All-Ireland quarter-finals

IN 1995 the Kerry senior football team were training in Strand Road, under the watchful eye of the then manager Ogie Moran, when an animated O’Rahilly’s supporter called the Kerry boss for attention. “Ogie, I have seen the best juvenile ever playing this morning. He has everything: his skill level and ball control is way ahead of his contemporaries. He can score at will and he is still with the under-6s." “Is that so?” said Ogie. John Dowling, the former Kerry great, walked away and Ogie enquired about this child prodigy. With a great sense of satisfaction Dowling turned and said: “Barry John Keane – sure I brought him myself to the coaching this morning...and he is my grandson.” Twenty-one years later Barry John came on in Croke Park on Sunday last and scored his customary three points in Kerry's big win over Clare. Keane has come on so often for Kerry in the second half of games to score on average of three points. Not a big man, he is a great fetcher of the ball and with the greatest of ease he guides his efforts to raise

those white flags. He has not been as effective when he started for the full game. I believe that when the pace and intensity of the game drops he is most effective.

Currow Coiste Na nÓg

games finished Kerry footballer Fionn Fitzgerald gave all the players a tour of the park and gave them good tips on how they can improve their game. U11s: On Sunday 24th Currow played host to Gneeveguilla in a East Kerry League game. On the day Currow were the eventual winners and went onto win on a score line of Currow 5-16 Gneeveguilla 5-10.

U16s: Currow travelled to Foilmore on Wednesday last to play the host in which was Currow’s first game of the county league. Despite giving it their all an under strength Currow team were defeated on the night on a score line of St Michaels/Foilmore/Skellig/ Valentia 6-12 Currow 2-09. U14s: On Monday last our u14 team made the journey to Fitzgerald stadium to play Beaufort in the East Kerry Division 4 League final. On the night Currow gave it their all and took the game to extra time but Beaufort proved to be too strong for our lads in extra time and went on to win the final on a score of Beaufort 7-18 to Currow’s 7-12. Scorers on the night for Currow were Connie O’ Connor 3-04, Daniel Kelly 1-04, Darragh Kelly 1-01, Josh McCarthy and David Moriarty 1-0 each, Brian Culloty, Jason Brosnan and Jack Moriarty 0-1 each. Next up will be the East Kerry Championship in a few weeks time and Currow u14s will also contest the Castleisland Distract League A final vs Ballymac. U12s: In late July Currow u12 team took part in a Munster GAA Go Games blitz in Fitzgerald Stadium. On the day Currow played Beaufort, Rathmore and Kilnamartyra (Cork). After the

TOO EASY It was all too easy for Kerry on Sunday last as goals from Donnchadh Walsh and Darran O’Sullivan paved the way for a Kerry win. It was very much like the earlier win in Munster here in the Fitzgerald Stadium, a runaway win. The defence is still a big worry for the Kerry selectors. The full-back line played well and Shane Enright was very unlucky not to have scored a goal on one of his sorties upfield. Mark Griffin, in particular, caught my eye. They did not concede a goal but Clare had plenty of opportunities to breach the defence. I shudder to think if David Connolly or Bernard Brogan got those chances. Although he kept a clean sheet Kerry ’keeper Brian Kelly will not be happy with his display. He made a mess of too

many kickouts and didn't inspire any confidence under the dropping ball. There is still a problem with being opened in the centre. Peter Crowley did not seal off the middle when the Clare half forwards drove forward. The young wingbacks O Beaglaíoch and Morley did well until the latter was correctly black carded in the 44th minute. There is still a big concern about the Kerry midfield. Both were poor, especially Donaghy, who is well past his ability to play at midfield. His engine lacks power and pace and I expect him to make way for Anthony Maher for the next game. Moran did improve after a dreadful start when he struck two 45s so weakly and this forced him to go short on the 3rd attempts. Oh to have Kerry captain Bryan Sheehan on board. He did eventually come on for Star. Of course Johnny Buckley should have fully recovered from that knee injury by the next game and will be pushing for a starting position at wing forward. Gooch will also figure in the equation. It will also give James O’Donoghue the opportunity to get back to full fitness. He did reasonably well considering his lack of match practice, scoring five points all from frees. The Kerry forwards did well with Darran O’Sullivan most impressive. DIVISION 4 FINAL Beaufort 7-18 Currow 7-12 (AET) In the East Region U14 League Division 4 Final, played in one of the finest settings in Ireland, the Fitzgerald Stadium, Beaufort and Currow served up a game had everything, long range points, great goals great saves and great excitement. O’ SULLIVAN CUP SEMI FINAL Spa 1-13 Dr Crokes 2-5 A youthful Spa team, supported by Andrew Garnett, Andy Fitzgerald, Conor Gleeson and Rory Carroll reached their first O’ Sullivan Cup Final, since 1997 with victory over Dr Crokes in Spa. Date for the Diary Spa C.L.G. are marking the 50th anniversary of their first O’Donoghue Cup title, won in 1966 on Thursday the 11th August starting with Mass at 7pm. That year (1966) the East Kerry Senior Championship O’Donoghue Cup competition was changed to a knock out format from a league format. Results Bill Tangney Cup Semi Finals Gneeveguilla 2-11 Kilcummin 2-5 Currow 1-11 Fossa 1-8 Tatler Jack East Region Minor League Division 1 Gneeveguilla 4-12 Dr Crokes 2-12 Division 2 Cordal/Scartaglen 4-19 Beaufort 1-9 Currow 4-17 Rathmore 4-07.

He got a cracking goal in the second half which put paid to any chance of a Clare revival. He was my man of the match just ahead of Mark Griffin and Paul Graney, who scored just one point but always looked impressive. THE DUBS So Kerry will most likely meet Dublin in the semi-final unless Donegal come good this weekend. Kerry have just over three weeks to prepare for the semi-final. The selectors have to make a decision on captain Bryan Sheehan. I believe that despite his lack of pace he could be accommodated at centre forward. It is a high risk going in to a big game without a recognized long distance free taker. Gooch will be hoping that his injury has healed in good time so that he can be pencilled in to the forward line. MINORS Good to see the Kerry minors asserting superiority over Derry with so many local players in action. It bodes well for Peter Keane in his first year as manager of this side. Final score was 1-24 to 2-10. Top scorers were Sean O’Shea who hit 1-5 from play as well as a point from a free. David Shaw grasped his chance to shine scoring five points from play as well as the gifted David Clifford who also raised five white flags.

Spa to Celebrate 1966 O’Donoghue Cup Victory On Thursday August 11th at 7pm at the Spa Clubhouse - all are welcome! Following their successful era of the 1950’s, due to emigration, retirements and a lack of a proper underage structure, the Spa club went into gradual decline and became defunct for a 4 year period, which saw many of their players assisting St Finian’s in East Kerry competitions. The first tentative steps in the revival of the club came in 1963 when a Spa/ Glenflesk amalgamation won the East Kerry Minor League, and this victory, which coincided with the decision by St Finian’s not to continue to compete in East Kerry competitions, heralded the revival of the Spa club. At the club AGM in the old Macra Hall in March 1966 a decision was taken to enter the senior East Kerry League for the O’Donoghue Cup. After a narrow victory over Currow in their opening game, they were defeated by Listry in the next round and their future in the competition very much hinged on what was to be a crucial clash with Gneeveguilla. Conscious of their plight, the team prepared well for this game and, after a titanic struggle, Spa emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins. After defeating Rathmore in the next round on July 20th, the scene was set for an O’Donoghue Cup final against a fancied Kilcummin side, and again, after another titanic struggle, and a cracking Paddy Dennehy goal in the 20th minute, the Cup was on its way to Spa for the first time. At the next EKB meeting, it was decided to initiate a knock-out competition commencing in early September, and once again a narrow victory over Dr Crokes paved the way for the side to progress to the final on Easter Sunday 1967, and Spa were now winners of both the League and the knock-out competition, which was to be the format for the O’Donoghue Cup competition over the subsequent 50 years - a competition which Spa won on a further nine occasions. What makes the 1966 victory so special is that it proved to be a motivating factor for the years ahead and those players, who went on to represent the club, developed a sense of achievement and self-belief that helped to sustain them in subsequent years. On Thursday August 11th the surviving members of the panel, and representatives of those who have passed away in the interim period, will assemble at Spa clubhouse for a special reunion function during which mass will be celebrated at 7pm by one of the playing members of the side, Fr Michael O’Donoghue. Everyone is welcome to come and join in the celebration.
