"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb
‘You’d need to be like the girl from The Exorcist to tackle some of our junctions’ IT WAS a bit disappointing that there weren’t many Halloween horror films on our television channels last weekend. There’s still a few of us about who may not necessarily venture into the Netflix twilight zone for our movie fix but who still want to feast our beady little eyes on some good old-fashioned tales of terror on TV. It’s a time of year that we demand to be sent to our beds roaring our heads off or at least slightly scared of venturing off the couch once the credits roll. But don’t worry. Real-life frights aplenty await you on our streets. You’d need to be like the girl on The Exorcist with a 360-degree range of neck movement to be able to tackle some junctions in Killarney. Maybe a few functional eyeballs on the back of the head wouldn’t go astray either. On Tuesday as I drove up in a stop-start convoy on High Street ready to swing left, I was faced with what can only be described as a zoo of activity verging on the paranormal, courtesy of its poltergeist-like air of mayhem. Two determined young boys were using the kerb as a launching pad as they propelled themselves across the road from the corner of High Street to the footpath near the dry cleaner’s opposite.
While drivers inching their way up High Street had to pay attention to the stalling cars ahead en route to the traffic lights at the middle of the intersection (often a car will just pull up and stop, confused, blocking access behind and to its right), traffic was merrily hurtling from our right towards the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Road. That, together with cars in pause or parking mode down the latter route, ensured an interesting time for motorists poised to move left from High Street. Forget about waiting for cinematic horrors, just sit into your car or walk or cycle through the town centre on a moderately busy day. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

Parking at Pinewood Estate PARKING at Pinewood estate was discussed at the recent meeting of Kerry County Council. Councillor John Sheahan urged the local authority to address what he described as “the parking issue” at the estate. Council management replied that it “was not aware of any significant parking problem” in Pinewood Estate. Housing estates within Killarney town are not subject to parking bye-laws and therefore no parking enforcement can be carried out at this location, the meeting heard. “However, if there is a specific issue at this location, Kerry County Council can investigate the matter,” noted council management.

WOODLAWN RESIDENTS MASS THE annual Mass for the sick and deceased will take place in The Dromhall Hotel on Tuesday, November 8, at 8pm.
THIS year’s crop of six young white-tailed sea eagle chicks are now busy exploring the wider world around them as they break their ties with their parents and learn to fend for themselves. After taking flight for the first time in July, at 11-14 weeks old, the youngsters are now proficient fliers so it came as no surprise when one was spotted by a local farmer on Inis Meáin in the Aran Islands. Others have dispersed to south-west Kerry and east Galway. The 2016 Killarney chick, a female named ‘Danú’ named after the Celtic goddess or the nearby Paps of Danú, left her nest in mid-July but only began to venture away from the lakes of Killarney in late September. She returned to Killarney then finally departed on October 1 when she headed west towards Waterville where she remains. Her satellite
tracks show that she even spent the night next to another eagle nest in west Kerry that also produced a chick this year. Meanwhile the last straggler to leave home, ‘Eddie’ the Glengarriff chick, is yet to make the move out while his parents continue to feed him. Both parents and chick have been thrilling local boatmen and tourists. Time will tell how these young eagles will fare. “Some may not make it through their first winter when having to find enough food to survive is a big challenge. Young eagles are especially dependent on carrion cavenge often in the uplands. However, the omens so far are encouraging for this new generation of wild Irish-bred birds,” said Dr Allan Mee of the Irish White-tailed Sea Eagle Reintroduction Programme.

Talented artist Martin opens a new chapter
Martin Carey.
Gathering of clans for the O’Sullivans SOME 60 first cousins enjoyed a get-together at The Dromhall Hotel last Friday for the O’Sullivan reunion. The idea of bringing everyone together to enjoy a catch-up was the brainchild of Kilcummin cousins Siobhan McSweeney and Gearoid O’Sullivan, both from Knockaninane West. All are grandchildren of Thade Peter O’Sullivan and Nell Kissane of Knockaninane West who had 13 children. “The O'Sullivan cousins reunion was talked about for years,” said Siobhan. All cousins travelled near and far to be there on Friday night. Padraig Gallivan and Bernie O'Sullivan travelled from New York, Timothy O'Sullivan came from England and Tim O'Sullivan from Sligo. All the other cousins travelled from Cork and Kerry. “There were plenty of songs and stories into the early hours on Friday night. It was a great success and a night to remember by all,” said Siobhan.

GIFTED Killarney cartoonist, artist and illustrator Martin Carey will himself be in the picture this Saturday as he opens a brand-new chapter with his fantastic first book The Hahah. Martin, from Kilcummin, has always had a passion for art and will be known to many locally for his stunning watercolour paintings. Now his cartoons have won him another whole legion of fans both in print and online, particularly in the past few months. Since May, Killarney Advertiser was delighted to welcome Martin as our resident cartoonist – and we always look forward to seeing and sharing with our readers Martin’s unique and witty take on life in Killarney and beyond. Martin, who is a member of staff with Irish Rail and who has worked at Killarney Railway Station for the past 25 years, has a real eye for the faces and places he encounters. “I called the book The Haha, both in reference to the place in Killarney town centre and also as a play on words,” said Martin. Indeed, one of his memorable cartoons shows The Simpsons character Nelson at the Haha in Killarney – Nelson is, of course, renowned for his catchphrase “ha ha”. “The book mainly consists of cartoons about Killarney and Kerry with an emphasis on local issues, politics, Kerry football and the GAA,” added Martin. The Haha, which was designed by Ticketyboo Design & Print at Killarney Advertiser, features a whole host of eyecatching, humorous and thought-provoking cartoons and would make the perfect Christmas present. The 64-page publication will be available for sale throughout Killarney, in Eason, O’Connor’s Newsagents, Eagers, Kerry GAA Store in Killarney Outlet Centre, Bricin, Serendipity and Muckross Gift Shop. It retails at €9.99. Martin will also be selling it online through Facebook (martincareyart) and Etsy. The book will be launched in Killarney Library by TDs and brothers Michael and Danny Healy-Rae (both of whom feature regularly in the book) at 2pm this Saturday. Admission is free and all are welcome.
GARDAI SEEK HELP IN TRACING MAN MISSING FROM TRALEE GARDAI are seeking the public’s assistance in tracing the whereabouts of a 54-yearold man who has been missing from the Tralee area since August. William Mulvihill, a native of Ballybunion, was last seen on the Tralee bypass area on the night of Monday, August 22, 2016. Killarney shows it means business
MAXIMISING profit was one of the focuses of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce open business meeting. The event unfolded in The Dromhall Hotel last Thursday night. Killarney Chamber President Kate O’Leary said: “The annual event is open to all and once again proved an enlightening evening.” Business coach Helen Burns gave a thought-provoking presentation, focusing on simple strategies to maximising profit. John McEnery of Killarney Chamber’s retail group also announced a retail excellence awards scheme for 217. Killarney Municipal District manager Angela McAllen briefed attendees on both recently completed projects and plans for works in 2017. "We were delighted with the energy in the room and must especially thank Angela McAllen for keeping the business community of Killarney up to speed. We particularly welcome the announcement of works at Plunkett Street beginning early in 2017,” added Ms O’Leary. “The event was once again sponsored by AIB, which has supported Chamber so well throughout the year."

Sacred choral works to hit all the right notes THE sacred choral compositions of Kerry musician and music teacher Aidan O’Carroll will be performed in the Franciscan Friary, Killarney, on Sunday, November 13, at 8pm. The works will be showcased by Kerry Chamber Choir, Kerry Chamber Orchestra, St Mary's Cathedral Choir, Miriam Murphy and Aisling O'Carroll (sopranos), Gavan Ring (baritone), Ermelinda Qejvani (flautist) and Ulla Latimer (organist). The evening is one of a series of signature events designed to celebrate the 35th birthday of Kerry School of Music. The concert is devoted solely to the sacred choral works of a single living Kerry composer – Kerry School of Music founder and Director Aidan O’Carroll – will be given. “I’m not aware that this has ever happened before,” says Aidan. The venue has been chosen because the Friary stands on Martyr’s Hill, the site of the
martyrdom of Dominican priest Tadhg Moriarty. The concert is being professionally recorded and a modest admission of €15 or €10 is being charged to cover professional costsa

Aine Griffin, PJ McGee, general manager, Philip Kelly and Joanne Breen of the deli department.
CROSSING off that shopping list before the festive season will be easy, fun and, importantly, value for money this year thanks to Daly’s SuperValu. Remember the fun evening out presented by Daly’s Food Fair last year? Well, this year promises all that and more! The Killarney supermarket offers a dazzling range of fantastic festive buys and you will get a unique chance to check these out next Wednesday, November 9, as it hosts its annual Christmas Food Fair. The event, which takes place between 6pm and 8.30pm, is an absolute must-visit and promises fun for all the family. Anyone with a passion for gourmet food of all kinds should take note that this food fair offers enticing food and wine-tasting opportunities. The food fair is also an extremely tempting one in terms of money-saving opportunities, with a whole host of exciting special offers available. However Daly’s SuperValu respectfully requests that all children be accompanied by an adult on the night.
SCRATCH BAKERY OFFERS RECIPE FOR SUCCESS THE tantalising aroma of fresh bread has been delighting shoppers since Daly’s SuperValu added its own scratch bakery in 2013. The team of bakers create all the Daly’s homemade breads from scratch, from large white pans to Vienna loaves, brown sodas, scones, fresh rolls and such specialist breads as honey and spelt and multi-seed loaves. Fresh cream cakes, all made inhouse from scratch, such as jam and cream sponges, banoffee pies, fresh fruit flans and fresh
fruit pavlovas are available fresh seven days a week. “We also now take orders for birthday cakes and Christmas cakes,” said Denis Tucker, duty manager. “You can have them personalised with photos and messages.” Shoppers can pick up their fresh bread, made inhouse every day, and team members will be on hand during the food fair to advise you on the perfect choices to complement your Christmas menu.
A FESTIVE FEAST IF YOU harbour ambitions of serving a truly enticing Christmas dinner this year, Daly’s SuperValu’s chef Ben Soulmani will be on hand on the night to give excellent tips to those who are faced with the task of cooking the perfect festive feast. In addition, there will be over 40 demonstration stands on the night. “Ben will be offering all the solutions to your meal requirements, from turkey and ham preparation to fish dishes,” said PJ McGee, store manager, Daly’s SuperValu.

PUTTING charity in the frame has become part and parcel of the lead-up to the festive season for Killarney Rotary Club, which launched its annual Evening of Wine & Art on Wednesday. The 13th annual event will take place in The Malton Hotel on Thursday, November 24, and will support a number of local charities. The main beneficiary this year will be the Stephen Lyne Foundation. Representatives of the foundation together with those from three of the others charities – Killarney Cardiac Response Unit, the Killarney Celtic Football for All Club, and Killarney Swimming Club – were present at the launch. "The event is held in association with Daly’s SuperValu without whom we could not hold this event every year," said Killarney Rotary President Angela O’Connor. Expect the chance to purchase local art as well as locally produced crafts. If you’re a wine buff you will be spoilt for choice with a huge number of the best wine and beer labels around and you will also get to enjoy festive nibbles and speciality cheeses. "The main beneficiary this year will be The Stephen Lyne Foundation and the funds raised will go to The Barnardos Roots of Empathy Programme to benefit local Killarney schools including St Oliver’s, Holy Cross Mercy NS and Presentation Monastery Primary School,” said Angela. “Amongst the other charities and community projects being supported by this year’s Killarney Rotary Evening of Wine & Art are the Order of Malta, Killarney Swimming Club, the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit, Killarney Football For All, the Kilcummin defibrillator group, the Order of Malta, Fossa Rowing Club, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Coolick and Tiernaboul national schools, and the Presentation Secondary School Music programme.” Another highlight of the night is the exciting charity auction of artwork. The raffle, always eagerly anticipated, will be co-ordinated by the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the proceeds of the cloakroom will support the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club.
So what will the Christmas in Killarney Festival deliver? ‘Yule’ love it! IT’S absolutely biting cold outside this week and it’s putting thoughts into our heads of that extra-enchanting time of year. While the jingle bells have yet to tinkle, the whispers of those hard-working elves on the Christmas in Killarney team have reached us and we are assured that the 2016 festival is poised to be the most magical yet. One new aspect is the Christmas Island, which will be located at Kenmare Place, opposite Cinema Killarney on the Ha Ha. Now in its 12th year Christmas in Killarney will include the highly anticipated Magic Parade. “Santa and his elves along with favourite Disney characters will travel through the town for the turning on of the town lights ceremony on Friday, November 25, at 6pm,” said a spokesperson for the Christmas in Killarney committee

Santa and his elves will return for a finale parade on New Year’s Eve at 6pm for anyone who did not make it home to Killarney before Christmas. This year will also see the return of the hugely successful Killarney on Ice, Kerry’s only ice rink. Events include The Christmas Craft & Food Fair which takes place on Sunday, November 27, Dine in Killarney restaurant nights on December 1 and 8, the Welcome Home Disco, and the annual Christmas In Killarney Designer Fashion Event will be held at the five-star award-winning Europe Hotel on November 17. Moments in Time
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Suggestions as to use of St Finan’s IN ANSWER to the question, 'Why is St Finan's lying idle?' (Killarney Advertiser, October 28) the answer is almost certainly “not financially viable”. The maintenance costs of a damp impractical building would not merit its utility as accommodation for the disabled, the retired, the returning emigrant, or the other groups mooted. The building symbolises the history of psychiatric care from the mid-19th century to date – far better to demolish most of the building and retain the central structure as both a museum to this history and also a memorial to those who suffered and died there. This would free up land in the centre of town for modern development of whatever kind. Janet Murphy, Killarney

The Rut by Nicky Barry AUTUMN falls after the summer, and green leaves all turn to brown. Chestnuts drop from their branches, and tawny leaves carpet the ground. In the hills of Killarney there’s romance, as stags do what they have to do. All year they’ve been buddies in pasture, with the does, who now they must woo. The does are perplexed every autumn, when the boyos with antlers all change. They start roaring, and acting the bully, and behaving like kings of the range. It’s the way of the wild in the woodland, just to keep the deer species

In truth it’s a callous procedure, there’s no foreplay, or ‘Mam, how do you do?’ It’s life in the raw, pure feral amour, its whambam - good luck - and adieu. The poor divils are driven to breeding, for three awesome weeks in the year. It’s something that comes from deep down inside, and has been for millions of years. When it’s over, they’re completely exhausted,
from the ardour of their sylvan fling. The does all breathe a great sigh of relief, and look forward to fawns in the spring. Nicky Barry, Woodlawn Park, Killarney

I WOULD be grateful if you could draw the attention of the readers of the Killarney Advertiser to an important patient conference being organised by COPD Support Ireland ahead of World COPD Day. On Tuesday November 15, we will be hosting our first-ever national patient conference, "Save Your Breath" for people with COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, at the Royal College of Physicians, Kildare Street, Dublin 2. COPD is perhaps more commonly known by other names such as bronchitis or emphysema. It is estimated that some 380,000 people have the condition in Ireland. The conference will hear from leading Irish and UK experts on the latest developments in COPD treatment and care, while attendees will also be able to quiz our politicians on their plans to develop COPD health policy. Of particular interest will be a range of lifestyle and well-being workshops. World COPD Day is an important opportunity to remind people to be aware of the symptoms and to remember the "ABC" of COPD: Avoid the risks such as smoking and environmental toxins; be aware of the symptoms that include persistent cough with phlegm, chest infections and breathlessness; consult a GP for a simple spirometry breathing test, particularly if you are over 35 years, have symptoms, are or have been a smoker, or have a family history of lung conditions. Booking for the conference is on a first-come, first-served basis - simply telephone 01-28 33 500. Further information on COPD can be found by visiting www.copd.ie. Microsuction is the safest, most effective way of cleaning wax build-up and any obstruction caused by foreign bodies down the ear canal. The procedure uses a finely balanced medical suction device which is complimented by a sophisticated microscope. This provides a magnified light source to enable the delicate structures of the ear canal to be viewed throughout the whole procedure.

BENEFIT OF SOTHYS FACIALS
Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on how choosing the perfect facial is key to your skincare regime
THERE are many different types of facials and it's usually best to let your therapist do a skin analysis before she starts so she can recommend the best facial for your skin requirements. The Sothys skincare range offers a wide variety of facials, from the eye facial to the neck facial, which is great for defining the jawline, to the anti-ageing and hydrating facials. The most popular facial at the moment is the glycolic peel facial. We recommend a course of four – one a week for four weeks. At the moment if you buy three you get the fourth free. This facial stimulates skin cell renewal, which in turn stimulates collagen production, keeping a fresher younger looking skin. When you keep the skin exfoliated, it prevents
the build-up of dead skin cells that block and clog the pores causing blackheads and breakouts, therefore glycolic is good for oily congested skins for prevention purposes. What are the main benefits of glycolic peels? Acne breakouts can be greatly reduced by the deep pore cleansing action of the peels. Basic steam and extraction facials cannot clean out pores as well as glycolic can, because the glycolic solution can soak into the pores and dissolve the congestion there, removing even the tiniest of blackheads. Lines and wrinkles can be reduced due to the stimulation of collagen production. Any brown pigmentation marks on the skin can be reduced, due to skin cell renewal. For more information contact Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966.

Festive season kicks off early at Moll’s Gap
CHRISTMAS arrived early at Avoca at Moll’s Gap last week as Kerry football stars James O’Donoghue, Jonathan Lyne and Stephen O’Brien kicked off the celebrations in style. As Avoca closes for the season on November 20, Avoca management and staff decided to host a Christmas event for its customers. “We had lots of promotions instore, with goodie bags, mulled wine and mince pies,” said Eileen O’Leary, manager. “The café was busy with diners enjoying a full Christmas dinner, Christmas pudding plus all the usual Avoca favourites.” As hosts, James, Jonathan and Stephen looked extremely dapper in Selected Homme outfits from Avoca’s menswear department. “The store closes for the season on November 20 but Christmas shopping promises to continue until then. We will be re-opening on March 10, 2017,” added Eileen.

Our guide to organising fabulous festive celebrations for friends, family and colleagues
Why Killarney is the place to be for Christmas parties FOR over a decade now, The Christmas in Killarney Festival has ensured that Killarney is the festive capital of Ireland. The dedicated committee is already in action getting set to stage a wonderfully magical festival and party-planners would be very well advised to remain alert to the many ways in which the town will offer the (picture)-perfect backdrop to your own Yuletide celebration. Christmas in Killarney started out as a scheme back in 2005 to buy new Christmas lighting for the town and has become a pivotal winter festival with a myriad of offerings for all ages. In 2011, George Lee, presenter of RTE's The Business, awarded the members of Christmas in Killarney with the prestigious Best Christmas Business Town in Ireland, for the most innovative ideas to encourage people to shop locally. The 2016 Christmas in Killarney festival promises to be better than ever. “The
aim of the 2016 Christmas in Killarney festival is to focus on turning Killarney town centre into a magical wonderland for families through decoration and lighting with a select number of events sprinkled into the mix,” said a spokesperson. A thrilling Christmas events calendar has also been planned offering almost six weeks of festive events and activities. There will also be a wide range of events which will focus on raising money for various charities and providing Christmas cheer to local groups. “The Christmas in Killarney Committee would like to thank all our sponsors for their continued support,” said the spokesperson. “Killarney is the perfect place to spend time and celebrate with family and friends in the run-up to Christmas 2016, so be sure to come and join us for some festive fun!” Frozen's Anna and Elsa are driven in style during last year's Christmas in Killarney parade. Organising the perfect christmas party DON’T be daunted by the prospect of organising a Christmas party. Whether you have been tasked with co-ordinating your work do, or want to organise a get-together for friends or family, now is the ideal time to get out that pen and paper and start planning. Early birds will also avoid the disappointment of unavailable venues and the prospect of leading a less-than-merry band of revellers around the streets in search of party central! First off, nail down the date. Consult everyone involved as to which dates they are available and, if it is a work function, try to find out the optimum day of the week for the event. For instance, Friday nights might work best because colleagues won't have work the next day or alternatively this might be a no go as it eats into their weekend. Finalise a total budget for the event and confirm the number of guests – have in mind a minimum and maximum number of guests who will attend. The right venue is key – consider what type of venue most suits your team; a hotel, unique venue, marquee, bar or nightclub? Location is also crucial – would you like the venue walking distance from your office or are you willing to travel slightly further? It is also important to consider where most people will be travelling back to at the end of the night to make sure the location is convenient and ensure maximum attendance. The party atmosphere is another key consideration – do you require a formal sit-down dinner followed by dancing or maybe more of a party atmosphere focusing on drinking and dancing?

Fun festive options YOUR Christmas party – whether with your colleagues, friends or family – can take many forms. Why not try a few different fun options for size? If it’s a girlie affair, then a festive afternoon tea should fit the bill. Also along the feelgood line is a spa day, which should go well with bon viveurs of all ages. This might be combined with a fabulous Yuletide lunch. Finally, you don’t have to stray from home to enjoy a mini-break – consider a package that allows you to feast on fine food and enjoy an overnight stay, complete with that essential breakfast in bed the morning after!

Picking the perfect party venue CHRISTMAS PARTIES come in all shapes and sizes and whether you are organising a cosy get-together for a select few or planning a larger do, the venue is key to its success. Now is an ideal time to check out what all venues have to offer. Killarney is in the enviable position of offering a whole host of venues to choose from, to suit all sizes of parties. Most venues offer bespoke packages tailored to your precise requirements. After reviewing the proposal and what is included in each package, shortlist the venues offered. This can be a fun part of party planning. It is a good idea to view the venues you are interested in as soon as possible, venues will not hold dates endlessly over the Christmas period therefore, it is best to move quickly on this. When viewing the venues remember to bring the proposal with you so you can check what the package includes at each venue.

Grace Notes WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley asks whether drive comes from within or whether external influences motivate us
LAST week I wrote about inspiration and all the different ways we can be inspired. This week I ask the question, “What drives you?” Inspiration can often be the reason we set out on a particular journey but we then need to be driven by something to continue and reach our goals. Does the drive come from within or does there need to be an outside influence? At times I have felt driven by a great passion I have for a particular project and at other times I have kept going out of sheer stubbornness! I think that when we are driven by something pure and honest we are then on the right path. I often compare sportspeople to artists. Both careers require a great amount of self-belief, self-discipline and drive. I have been lucky enough to watch my cousins excel at playing football over the years. The amount of work and sacrifice that goes into playing this non professional sport is quite astounding. These
players cannot be driven by money as they are not paid. They may achieve a certain level of fame which I presume could be appealing. All in all I see that these players are driven by a great passion to be the best they possibly can be. They give their lives and their bodies over to a sport that rewards them not in a monetary sense, but in a way that is hard to put into words. I wonder if all artists need to be rewarded in this way to keep themselves driven to continue. Does the cheque satisfy our appetite to feel we have done a good job? I have always felt that it is the magical feeling that people have enjoyed something I have created that keeps me moving forward. Of course payment is very important, but what is it that reaches into your soul and makes you feel at peace with yourself? When someone hangs your painting on their wall or watches your film or recites your words, will you remember the price it cost them? Is the joy of sharing your talent with others the best payment of all?

New resource for bereaved parents launched in Tralee
ANAM CARA, the national organisation that supports bereaved parents, unveiled a new resource. The information pack, which was launched in the Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee on Tuesday, is designed to provide support for bereaved parents in the early days after the death of their son or daughter. Over 30 local organisations were at the launch and received copies of the new pack, which contains eight booklets on different themes related to parental grief. Also available was a new booklet published just this week written by and for parents with no surviving children. The local groups represented included An Garda Síochána, the HSE, Southern Health Board, Kerry General Hospital and Kerry Mental Health Service. Rainbows, SHEP, Pieta, Kerry Travellers Health & Community Development Project and various representatives from family resource centres and the Kerry Diocese also attended. Founded in 2008, Anam Cara Kerry meets on the second Tuesday of every month in the Recovery Haven in Tralee, with the simple model of giving bereaved parents a safe and comfortable setting where they can meet other bereaved parents. Anam Cara is open to all bereaved parents, regardless of the age or circumstances of their child’s death, or whether the death was recent or not. Meanwhile, Anam Cara is hosting its monthly meeting for bereaved parents on Tuesday, November 8, from 7.30pm to 9pm in H Recovery Haven, 5 Haigs Terrace, Killerisk, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The meeting offers parents a safe and comfortable setting where they can connect with other bereaved parents who will understand the depth of their loss and grief. For more information or to order a free copy of the information pack, you can email info@anamcara.ie or ring their Information Line on 085 2888 888.

The Provocateur ‘PEOPLE ARE MAKING A CAREER OUT OF BOGUS CLAIMS’ THE high cost of motor insurance premiums in Ireland is a very much ongoing issue. It has seen increases over the last year, as much as 50% in some cases, but a new report will hit motorists with an even further increase in 2017. The report by S&P Global Ratings, which looks at Ireland’s insurance industry, said average prices for car insurance stood at €900, and it expected to see a further rise of 10 to 15% before the middle of 2017. In the latter half of next year, price hikes are expected to slow to “sustainable levels” of about 5%. Measures have to be introduced as soon as possible to tackle this and to stop the culture of bogus claims. This culture has gone out of control, and these claims are causing the costs of premiums to rise continuously. Some people are making a career from bogus claims and I would like the insurance companies to examine this situation. The attitude of insurance companies is ridiculous in not challenging claims because it may cost them more to take on the claimant than if they just paid out. The Government is dragging its feet on this issue. I raised the issue during with the Taoiseach on Wednesday week last asking if he and his ministers could look at the situation, to see if they could bring the insurance companies in to let them know they have to challenge cases if there is local knowledge or proof that a person is involved in a bogus claim, I do not care if the pay-out is €30,000 and if the cost to the company is €40,000 to prove that it is bogus. They should prove that the claims are bogus and should stop those claims.

A A WEEKLY WEEKLY ROUND-UP ROUND-UP OF OF NEWS NEWS + + SWITCHING OFF... Smartphones and tablets in bedrooms disrupt the sleep of children even if they are switched off, a new study has shown. Researchers at King’s College London and Cardiff University reviewed 11 studies involving more than 125,000 children to find out if technology was impacting sleep. They found that using smartphones or tablets before bedtime doubled the risk of a disrupted night’s sleep and raised the changes of feeling excessively sleepy the following day by two-fold. But crucially, sleep was also significantly disturbed by the mere presence of devices – almost to the same level as actually using a gadget - suggesting that they should be removed from bedrooms altogether to improve sleep. It is thought that the ‘always on’ nature of social media and instant messaging means children are continuously stimulated by devices in their environment, even when they are not using them.
Dr Ben Carter of King’s College London, said: “Our study provides further proof of the detrimental effect of media devices on both sleep duration and quality. “Sleep is an often undervalued but important part of children’s development, with a regular lack of sleep causing a variety of health problems. With the ever growing popularity of portable media devices and their use in schools as a replacement for textbooks, the problem of poor sleep amongst children is likely to get worse.” Previous studies have shown that seven in 10 children and nine in 10 teenagers have at least one device in their bedrooms, and most are used near to bedtime. Screen-based media devices adversely affect sleep through a variety of ways, including delaying or interrupting sleep time; psychologically stimulating the brain; and affecting sleep cycles, physiology and alertness. The new research was published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.

VIEWS VIEWS FROM FROM KERRY KERRY AND AND AROUND AROUND THE THE WORLD WORLD WITHOUT MISTAKES, LIFE AS WE KNOW IT WOULD NOT EXIST TREVOR O’DONOGHUE expands on how the accumulation of mistakes over time can create new species “EVOLUTION forged the entirety of sentient life on this planet using only one tool: the mistake.” The above quote is from Dr Robert Ford, one of the main protagonists in a popular, new TV show, Westworld. An simple sentence, but one which sums up evolution and one of the forces behind it quite succinctly. In truth, the quotation applies, not only to sentient live, but to all life on our planet, and if life has evolved elsewhere, and enjoys a healthy competition for resources, then it will probably apply there too. Each of us is built from a combination of genes that we have received from our parents. Half from our mother, the other half from our father. And so it is with most animals and plants. The genes that define us are written in DNA. Each of our cells contains an exact blueprint in DNA, made up of millions of genes, detailing how we are built and operate. DNA is generally quite good at making exact copies of itself and so our genetic information is passed accurately to our children and our children’s children. On occasion, however, errors creep in when DNA makes copies of itself and these mistakes can also passed to our offspring. Most of the time these mistakes or mutations in our genes are harmless and so pass by unnoticed. Sometimes, they are negative and may cause a disease or a negative trait to express itself. Over
Talks on Garda strikes the course of time the negative mutations tend to die out because they do not offer any biological advantage to the organism. Occasionally, the mistake is positive and leads to a tangible benefit for the animal or plant. These benefits tend to confer a biological advantage to an organism over its competitors and so will be passed on from generation to generation and eventually spread throughout a population. The accumulation of these mistakes over time can change a plant or animal significantly. Eventually the sum of all changes will be enough so that a new species will have been created. Over the billions of years of evolution these simple mistakes have allowed life to evolve, adapt, diversify and colonise almost the entirety of our planet. Each and every species that we see today has got here through the accumulation of a multitude of mistakes. Without these mistakes, life as we know it would not have happened. • Feeling curious about the world around you? GARDAÍ have reassured the public that plans are in place to ensure policing continues throughout Kerry as the garda strike looms. On Wednesday night, the Garda Representative Association (GRA) said the strikes will go ahead unless there is a “substantial and significant progress towards real and tangible increases in pay”. Discussions continued in the Labour Court on Thursday, but RTÉ reports that a recommendation will not be made by the court in time. It was hoped that the GRA and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) might agree to defer the strike pending a ballot of members. However, as it stands, strikes will go ahead on November 4, 11, 18 and 25. Approximately 10,500 rank-and-file gardaí and 2,000 garda sergeants and inspectors will withdraw from work.
Spotlight on Tralee FORMER Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dick Spring will officially open the Tralee 800 Conference this Friday evening, November 4, in Siamsa Tíre Theatre. Conference speakers include those who have helped to unlock Tralee’s pre-history like county archaeologist Dr Michael Connolly, and those who have studied its turbulent medieval history like Dr Paul MacCotter from UCC.

Brendan’s legacy helps Kerry Hospice build on its strengths THE family and friends of Brendan Heffernan continued their support for Kerry Hospice Foundation in his memory, presenting a very generous €1,880 during the week. The amount was raised through a street collection in Killarney in August and it will contribute towards the 15-bedroom inpatient unit currently under construction at University Hospital Kerry. This vital facility has been sensitivity designed to provide appropriate care and support for terminally ill patients, their families and friends. In addition, seven Killarney beauticians supported the Beauty and ‘The Beast’ campaign initiated by Caitriona Heffernan following her own experience of cancer. “The beauty therapists provided complimentary vouchers to patients going through cancer treatment,” said Caitriona. “Recipients expressed their gratitude for the treatments to help them cope with the visible and emotional effects of treatment.”

Garden Magic MAKE THE MOST OF NOVEMBER A bright, crisp day is what every gardener looks forward to at this time of year, says Debby Looney
WE ARE LUCKY to have had some wonderful weather lately, and the trees around Killarney are looking particularly beautiful this year. In the garden, I think Fothergilla, (mountain Witch Alder), is at its best in November. It is an easy plant to grow, not at all fussy about soil or aspect. In the early spring it has fluffy white flowers before the leaves appear. They look a little like catkins. At this time of year it goes golden, and then bright scarlet from the top down. A stunner! Near it, I have planted another under-appreciated plant, Callicarpa Profusion. It is a fairly plain, non-descript plant most of the year, serving well as a green backdrop for herbaceous plants, but come late autumn it really deserves its traditional name of “Beautyberry”. Clusters of the brightest purple berries grace its stems throughout the winter. Birds don’t eat them, so you will enjoy them for months! There is still time to plant bulbs, including those for indoor use. Crocus
bulbs planted now in unusual containers, such as dainty old-fashioned teacups, or in sugar bowls, will make a lovely personal gift for Christmas or New Year. In the vegetable garden, all is quiet at the moment. But… how about trying something new this coming year? The no-dig method of gardening is becoming increasingly popular; not only does it save your back, but harvests are also increased. The idea is simple, rather than digging your beds over, you let the soil rest and cover with a thick layer of mulch, straw, stable manure, homemade compost, leaf mould – these are all excellent. If you are starting a new plot, just lay a layer of thick brown cardboard over your weeds, or piece of lawn, to choke them. In about six weeks repeat with another layer of cardboard and put a thick layer of mulch on top. Let the worms do their work and come spring you will have a lovely tilth to sow your seeds in.

Would you rather your car was a chauffeur or a guardian angel? Last week we raised the prospect of car sharing and now the world's biggest vehicle manufacturer Toyota, has raised the above question, as the motoring world heads towards full development of the autonomous car - a vehicle that will take those aboard from points A to B with no input whatsoever from any driver. At this stage Toyota doesn't believe that fully self-driving cars are necessarily the way to go. It believes that instead of a vehicle being a chauffeur (Toyota's word) with an autonomy that never disengages, it may be better for the autonomous car to be a guardian angel (Toyota's words) that is still under the control of the driver but steps in to prevent collisions when necessary. The manufacturer points out that already, most new vehicles carry the technology that allow them to be guardian angels. Such items as ABS brakes, stability control, collision avoidance braking, lane departure warning and prevention, collision avoidance steering and acceleration are among the things that are already aboard modern cars. And while it agrees that fully autonomous vehicles such as those being developed and promoted by the likes of Google and Tesla will be important in the future - and in fact is spending millions of dollars developing its own self-driving product - vehicles with steering wheels will also be vital in the future. Most importantly, technology is putting the accident-free car within reach, says Toyota, who points out that 1.6 million people die on the world's roads each year - that's 4,400 fatalities a day. All the car companies have had the accident-free car in mind for the past 20 years they are all going down the same development path in different ways.

Irish duo finish in fifth spot at Wales Rally GB IRISH pair Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle brought their Abu Dhabi Total World Rally Team Citroen home in fifth place in the Wales Rally GB, the penultimate round of the World Rally Championship. The Tyrone-Kerry partnership were disappointed at not being able to match the pace of the leading group, finishing two and a half minutes behind the winner. Frenchman Sebastien Ogier took a narrow victory in his VW Polo, his fourth Rally GB in a row, to confirm another World title despite a late challenge from Ott Tanak of Estonia in his Ford Fiesta, who was just 10 seconds behind at the end of three days of rallying. The Hyundais of Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon finished third and fourth. Waterford's Craig Breen unfortunately crashed out on Friday, with his Citroen too badly damaged to continue. Daniel Cronin scored his first major win in the West Lodge Hotel Fastnet Rally based in Bantry, where his Lancer Evo finished 38 seconds ahead of the Fiesta of Brendan Cumiskey. Hewison Autotest Championship rivals Steven Ferguson and Paul Mooney took a win and a second place each in the double-header weekend in Sligo, with Leitrim driver David Thompson third each time. Paul Nagle, Killarney, who finished in fifth place with Kris Meeke in the Wales Rally GB at the weekend.

Halloween celebrations at Gaelscoil Faithleann
SKELETONS, pumpkins, witches and wizards were just some of the spooky pupils to show up for class at Gaelscoil Faithleann on Friday. But the most rapturous welcome of all was reserved for the Tom Markham Cup which was held aloft at the school by All Ireland-winning Kerry minor footballers Billy Courtney and David Shaw (Dr Crokes) and Chris O'Donoghue (Glenflesk). The Kerry minor players received a resounding round of applause when they were special guests at the Gaelscoil’sHalloween party.

Open evening at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School THE St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School open evening took place last Wednesday, October 26. A very large crowd of prospective first year students from all of the local primary schools as well as students from outside of the catchment area attended the event with their parents. The families were greeted by staff and tour guides when they entered the school and each family were given an extensive tour of the school facilities by current transition-year and fifth year students. During the tours, students and parents had the opportunity to speak with all of the teachers about their subjects in the school and the numerous co-curricular links. The principal’s address took
place in the school gym at 7.15pm to facilitate the large crowd. Mairéad Lucey, deputy principal, acted as MC and welcomed everybody to the school. She outlined the importance of the open evening as it gave the school an opportunity to showcase the school’s successes, achievements and plans for the future. The school choir directed by Rosie Healy and accompanied by Louise Luddy gave a glimpse into their range of talents. These students will perform in the Friary with the Three Tenors on Sunday night, December 4. Ciara Carroll, a current fifth-year student, highlighted the benefits of transition year. Roisín Kearney, Leaving Cert student and chairperson of the student council, highlighted the com-
munity aspect that permeates the school. The final part of the presentation was given by Roisín Moore, principal, who gave specific information to parents and prospective students regarding the wide range of subjects and programmes on offer in the school and highlighted in particular the fact that all students in first year are afforded the opportunity to study all subjects for the entire year so that they can make informed subject choices for second year. Ms Moore also outlined the comprehensive range of extra-curricular activities on offer in the school and encouraged all prospective students to try new things and reach their potential as individuals. 04.11.16 Killarney Advertiser

Then when the summer sunshine Awakes the flowers in bloom I’ll walk that light from heaven Around the corners of every room. Do the things we did before, The same in every way Just whisper a little prayer to me At the dawn of every day Just think of me as present Don’t think of me as past For my love is a blessing In death it still can last. Forget your troubles and worries They are mine ever more I’ll watch and care and love you From heaven’s open door And when your road gets rough and rocky Or you’re down and need a crutch Remember I’m right beside you Just and inch too short to touch.

Then after a while, When its time to go The pain it worsens, And the tears start to flow. As we walk away feeling empty and low, We look up to the heavens and kisses we blow So catch them all baby girl and treasure them with care, And remember our precious Elizabeth to you no one can compare. Loved and remembered always by Mammy and Daddy.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

Miracle of Montecassino to be revisited in Killarney ONE of the standout moments of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society tour of Rome this year was a visit to the Abbey of Montecassino. The abbey will be the focus of an illustrated talk this evening, Friday, November 4, in the Randles Court Hotel. The talk will form part of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Weekend. “The Abbey of Montecassino is a cradle of western monasticism and was founded by St Benedict in 529AD on the site of the temple of Apollo,” said Jerry O’Grady of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society. The abbey was destroyed and rebuilt a number of times – in 584, 883, 1349 in 1799 by Napoleon and finally in February 15, 1944, by US bombing. Paid for mainly by the international community, the abbey was fully rebuilt and recreated exactly as it was before its destruction including its highly ornate basilica and incredible mosaic art. It was reconsecrated in 1964 by Pope Paul VI.

THE Aquila Club Leisure Centre at The Gleneagle Hotel marks 25 years in business this month and to celebrate it is hosting an open morning on Saturday, November 12. The leisure facility, complete with a 25-metre pool, kiddies pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, was officially opened by the then Taoiseach, Charles Haughey on November 8, 1991. It has since evolved into a hub for fitness enthusiasts and families of all ages as well as providing a base for The Gleneagle Squash Club and Killarney Tennis Club.
“Maurice O’Donoghue’s vision for this leisure centre was that it would be one of the best in the country and provide a fantastic facility for the people of Kerry,” said Aquila Club manager Eamonn Quigley. “It’s hard to believe we are open twenty-five years. Today we see many of the kids who learned to swim here in the 90s now bringing their children swimming here.” Members and visitors alike are welcome to attend the open day, to check out the facilities and enjoy the festivities. As well as exclusive membership offers, the team at the

Crokes march on in Munster Clare champs are brushed aside as focus shifts to semi-final, writes Adam Moynihan
D
R CROKES are through to the semi-final of the Munster Club Championship following another typically efficient performance, eventually running out 1-14 to 0-8 winners over Kilmurry-Ibrickane of Clare. The home side had been crowned champions of Clare for the 14th time the previous weekend and spirits must have been high but, like many before them here in Kerry, they found in this Crokes team a formidable op-
ponent and now their football for the year is done. The Crokes backs were in miserly form and managed to hold Kilmurry to just two scores from play all day. At the other end, the usual suspects kept the scoreboard ticking over and when Daithí Casey stepped up to convert a penalty just after the restart to open up a five-point lead, the game was all but sewn up. A point from Micheál Burns and three-in-a-row from
Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy ANOTHER weekend down and another epic display by Munster, this time at the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast. Rassie made many changes to the team which beat Glasgow in a highly charged game remembering Anthony Foley at Thomond Park the weekend before. Ulster led the first half with a 14-5 scoreline at half time. Though to be fair, the men in red had the majority of possession and the scoreline flattered a very poor Ulster side. However the Munster men fought hard and won by a point in the end. What a cracking display by the mighty men of Munster. Tonight, the lads take on Welsh side The Ospreys at Irish Independent Park in Cork. Well worth the trip to Cork! Tomorrow, Joe Schmidt’s men take on the mighty All Blacks at the Soldier’s Field Stadium in Chicago, ahead of a repeat fixture in Dublin in two weeks time. It certainly is a first where the men in green get two chances to beat the Kiwis. Ireland have been improving all the time, however it is difficult to see any team in the world beating the All Blacks. I’m sure two fantastic fixtures await! Closer to home, our minis section (kids from our U8, U10 and U12
sides) travelled to Listowel for the first round of the West Munster blitz. This was the first chance for the kids to put into practise all that was learned and worked on over the past few months since the season started. A fantastic time was had by all with all sides playing fantastic rugby and every child getting some valuable game time. Well done to all the coaches and parents who travelled with the kids. I was gutted to miss the trip as I recover from my ankle surgery but I am very proud of everyone for representing the Black and Red with pride! Finally, we have organised what will be a cracking night out on Friday, November 18. We will hold an 80s V 90s night at the Killarney Grand Hotel and would love everyone involved with KRFC – parents, coaches, players, members, friends etc to come along and enjoy the night. Entry costs €10 on the door or €7 if you come along in fancy dress. There’s no pressure to dress up but great fun will be guaranteed!
Gooch widened the gap further still and the Crokes supporters got back on the ferry satisfied with a comfortable ninepoint victory. Their reward is a home tie against Tipperary’s Loughmore-Castleiney who clinched their third county title in four years with a 1-9 to 1-6 win against Moyle Rovers in Cashel. The Mid Tipp champions, who in 2013 became the first club to win the Tipperary senior football and hurling championships in the same year, boast a number of dual stars, most notably forwards Noel and John McGrath who helped the Premier County to All-Ireland glory in September. Only one team from Tipperary has ever won the Munster Club Championship (Clonmel Commercials in 2015) so history isn’t exactly on their side. Then again, history wasn’t exactly on Clonmel Commercials’ side in 2015 either. In the other semi-final, Carbery Rangers await the winners of Waterford and one would imagine they
should be too strong for either Ballinacourty or The Nire; Waterford is the only county to never produce a winner of this competition. The men from Rosscarbery won their first ever county final a couple weeks back and they made their bow in Munster with a comprehensive victory over Monaleen of Limerick. There are now just 23 teams in the country still in with a chance of winning the All-Ireland next St Patrick’s Day so while players and mentors may well be focused on more pressing issues, it’s tempting as a supporter to step back and take a quick look at the wider picture. According to our good friends at the bookies, only St Vincent’s of Dublin (5/2) and Galway champions Corofin (3/1) have a better chance than the Crokes (4/1) of winning club football’s biggest prize. It might seem like a long way away yet but in reality it’s just four hours of football. For the moment, though, all eyes turn to the visit of Loughmore-Castleiney next weekend. You’d get sick of saying it but it’s difficult to look beyond the Crokes.
Kerry’s magnificent seven to be honoured A KERRY GAA celebration is on the cards this month as Kerry County Committee, in association with its team sponsor Kerry Group will honour its senior football All Ireland-winning teams 1997 to 2014 at a gala dinner/celebration to be held in the INEC, Killarney, on Saturday, November 19. The players and team management from all seven teams will be the special guests of honour at this black tie event. In all, 84 players will be honoured as well as 25 members from the various management teams. The celebration will also feature the launch of a specially commissioned DVD featuring the great players and personalities from this era, their stories and highlights from those wonderful games. All proceeds from the night will go towards the development of the Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence at Currans. It promises to be a night to be remembered as rarely has there been such a coming together of All Ireland medal holders even in a county such as Kerry where such items are common currency. Dr Crokes advance to Munster semi-final A top-class team performance ensured victory for Dr Crokes last Sunday, says Eamonn Fitzgerald
DR CROKES made the long journey across the ferry to Quilty on Sunday last to play Kilmurry-Ibrickane (KIB) in the first round of the Munster senior club championship and produced yet another splendid team performance earning a well merited 1-14 to 0- 8 win and a home venue for the semi-final on Sunday week against Loughmore-Castleiney the newly Tipperary champions. They have won the Tipperary title three times in the past four years. Crokes were well deserving of the spoils and won as easily as the score line suggests. The game was competitive for the first quarter. Scores were hard to come by and the sides were locked at two points each. However points by Daithí Casey, Kieran O’Leary and Eoin Brosnan made it a three-point game, Crokes leading by six points to three after 18 minutes CAPTAIN INJURED The Crokes captain Johnny Buckley had to come off in the 21st minute after he sustained a cracked rib from a direct punch to the side, more suitable for the pugilistic sport and not Gaelic football. I felt that the referee was very lenient with some of the aggressive tackling that was too prevalent in that opening 20 minutes. Indeed Johnny Buckley was fortunate not to be carded for an over robust tackle in the fifth minute. Colm Cooper received a yellow card and he never reached the high standards that he brings to the game in that opening half. Still Crokes defence stood firm with John Payne doing a great man marking job
on KIB’S danger man Keelan Sexton. Crokes held an interval lead of seven points to four. What was surprising for the spectators was to see the KIB goalkeeper Ian McInerney coming all the ways upfield to take the frees in the Croke part of the field. It wasn’t just the long frees and 45s, but he also took the close in frees. He scored three points of KIB’s total of eight. SUCH VISION Gooch was quiet in the first half but he roared in to action in the second half, particularly with his extraordinary vision. How he picked out Brian Looney with that perfectly weighted cross in the 35th minute and as Looney was pulling the trigger shooting for a goal a KIB defender leg blocked the attempt. Immediately the referee awarded a penalty which was expertly taken by the ever-impressive Daithí Casey. Crokes now led 1-7 to 0-5. Mícheál Burns, who came on for the injured Johnny Buckley scored a point and worked impressively. The strength of the Crokes bench gives the selectors plenty options. From here on it was very much a Gooch show. He scored points in the 40th, 41st and 43rd minutes to put the game out of the reach of the Clare men. He continued to find his team colleagues with pinpoint accuracy. Pat O’Shea gave Tony Brosnan and Jordan Kiely opportunities to show their class and they duly obliged. Brosnan hit two glorious long-range points from the terrace side and not to be outdone Jordie brought the Croke tally to 1-14. Pat O Shea the team boss
Gavin White, Dr Crokes, on a flying run in the Munster Club Championship game.

will be very happy with the result and in particular how all of the players jelled together to produce a match-winning team display. IMPRESSIVE All played well but in particular I was impressed by the consistent maturity of the brilliant Gavin White and the tenacity of John Payne. Others to shine were Fionn Fitzgerald, Daithí Casey, Eoin Brosnan and Colm Cooper. Crokes return to domestic fare this weekend when they meet Gneeveguilla in the O’Donoghue Cup semi-final. A huge number of Crokes supporters travelled to Quilty for last Sunday’s game.
Johnny Buckley’s injury will probably keep him out of football for a month. Cork referee Kevin Murphy was very consistent, but I felt he allowed too much high tackling go unpunished. Only two black cards were issued. It could well have been five or possibly six. . THE CLUB COMPLIMENTS CLUB PRESIDENT, ARTHUR HANLEY Club Captain Declan McCarthy, and his Committee, on behalf of the entire Club, would like to pay a very warm tribute to Club President Arthur Hanley on the manner in which he carried out his role as our Club President as his year comes close to a finish. Arthur’s dedication and commitment to his task was evident from the outset, and it never diminished at any stage during his year of office. He was almost ever present at any event in which our Clubs, the Men’s and Ladies and Juniors, were being represented, and at every Club final and presentation etc. For example on one Sunday during the summer, Arthur was in the second group out in a Club competition at 7.10 A.M. and after his round he drove to Macroom to support one of our Ladies Club teams in an inter-club competition, later that afternoon he drove on to Kenmare to support the Men’s Club team in the Dr. Billy O’Sullivan Shield, this demonstrates, just as an example, his commitment to carrying out his role, and to being practically omnipresent at every Club occasion. Well done Arthur, and thank you, as you bid farewell to your year as Club President on the 10th of November, Arthur’s successor will be Breda Duggan, and no doubt the ever popular Breda, will bring further dedication and honour to the Presidency. Don’t forget that the Club AGM will take place at the Clubhouse at 7.00 P.M. on Thursday the 10th of November. SATURDAY THE 29TH OF OCTOBER saw the playing of the finals of the last two championships of 2016 with the finishing of the Club Fourball and the Scratch Matchplay competitions. In the Club Fourball Final three of the four competitors were members of our Junior Club, when Ian Prendergast was partnered by Ewan McIndoe, and their opponents were Luke Walsh and Ger Walsh. The game was a ding-dong contest with Ian and Ewan being 1 up after twelve holes, this was reversed by the 17th tee when Luke and Ger were 1 up. They stood all square playing the 18th and the pairing of Luke and Ger had the misfortune to miss a short putt for the match, and
further-more they were defeated on the 1st tie hole by a birdie 3 by Ewan McIndoe. In the Scratch Matchplay Final between Simon Gallivan and Paud O’Donoghue, they were all square after 7 holes when Simon hit a purple patch with three successive birdies, and when Simon won the 13th and 14th holes, the contest was all over with Simon overcoming Paud by a margin of 5/4. SUNDAY THE 30TH OF OCTOBER the Men’s Club competition was a team of four with two to count at each hole, except fot the 18th when all scores were to count, played from the back tees on Mahony’s Point, Club Captain Declan McCarthy was delighted to be able to remark that the time sheet for the competition was totally utilised and that the scoring was a very tight affair indeed, with the first three teams all registering the same score of 94 points. 1st were Simon Gallivan(1), Tadgh Gallivan(13), John Cahill(11) and Seanie Kelliher(10). 2nd were Liam Healy(12), Brian Fitzgerald(15), Teddy O’Sullivan(19) and John Wall(16). 3rd were Billy Morris(10) Donal Cronin(11), Barry Duggan(17) and Kevin O’Callaghan(10).

Dr Crokes
MUNSTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP - QUARTER FINAL Dr Crokes 1-14 Kilmurry Brickane 0-8 played in Quilty on Sunday 30th of October We were behind on three occasions in the first quarter of this game. Our opponents led 0-3 to 0-2 at the end of the first fifteen minutes. We got well on top in the second quarter and sent over five points without reply. Kilmurry had a point on the stoke of half time. This left us with a half time lead of 0-7 to 0-4. Our opponents reduced our lead with a point in the 33rd minute. The defining moment came two minutes later when Colm Cooper expertly fielded a high ball just short of the end line and his well directed pass to Brian Looney resulted in a penalty for a kick block on the latter. We followed this with five unanswered points, three from Colm Cooper and one each from substitutes Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan. Kilmurry reduced the deficit to nine points with a point in the 57th minute. Both sides exchanged points on two occasions in the remaining minutes to leave us victorious at the end of the game on a scoreline of 1-14 to 0-8. Our opponents hardly deserved to lose by nine points as they had some very good passages of play during the game. Our dominance in the second and third quarter powered the way for our good victory in the end. A satisfying result and our manager and selectors must have been pleased that nin of our team got on the scoring list and all playing either midfield or in the attack. Three of our scorers who contributed four points between them, Micheál Burns, Tony Brosnan and Jordan Kiely came off the bench. Team and Scorers: Shane Murphy; John Payne, Mike Moloney; Fionn Fitzgerald;
