"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

‘I’m not an old age pensioner, I’m a recycled teenager’ BY EVE KELLIHER BETTY O’SHEA, Ireland’s latest centenarian, had plenty of help when it came to blowing out her birthday candles for her landmark birthday during the week. In the words of the birthday girl herself: "I'm not an old age pensioner, I'm a recycled teenager." Among the many friends and relatives celebrating with Betty last Friday was her famous grandnephew, former international soccer star Gary Breen. The former Wolves and Sunderland player travelled from Kent to Our Lady of Lourdes nursing home in Kilcummin to present Betty with the cheque from President Michael D Higgins to mark the milestone birthday. Betty was born at Bridge View, Shanacashel, Glencar, on February 17, 1917. As happened in those days, her siblings had to emigrate to the US. Eileen, Betty and Sheila headed for London and worked there during the World War 2. The three returned home for their mother’s funeral in the 1940s. Eileen and Betty returned to London and then shortly after, Eileen joined her siblings in San Francisco. Betty made her way to the south of England spent many years in the Devon area where she met up with John Monahan, a remarkable gentleman from Granard in Co Longford. They became inseparable friends and worked together for many years. John passed away in 1983 and at the behest of her sister Sheila, who had lost her husband Noel Breen the previous year, Betty came back to Ireland and lived with Sheila and her son Kieran and family in Coolmagort, Beaufort. Sheila passed away in 1996 and Betty remained in Beaufort until 2002 when she had to have her leg amputated due to circulation problems. She made a marvellous recovery and in late 2003 was able to move into 3 Monastery Gardens, New Road, Killarney, where she was able to live independently until May 2013. In May 2013 Betty moved to Our Lady of Lourdes In Kilcummin where she is hugely popular with residents and staff.

Torc Waterfall inspires Aidan and his fellow dancers

TORC WATERFALL provided the picture-perfect backdrop as GAA star Aidan O’Mahony and his dance partner Valeria Milova got ready for this week’s Dancing with the Stars episode. Aidan and Valeria along with Aidan’s fellow contestant Aoibhín Garrihy and her dance partner Vitali Kozmin were in Kerry this week for rehearsals and managed to fit in a walk to the scenic beauty spot. Valeria arrived in Killarney on Tuesday and she and Aidan perfected their routines during extra rehearsals in The Brehon Hotel and the nearby INEC. They were joined by Aoibhín and Vitali. Aidan O’Mahony found himself at the bottom of the judges’ leader board last week with a very disappointing 15 points. But he and Valeria are determined to do better this Sunday and will be waltzing to 'Fly Me to the Moon' by Buddy Greco. The final paso doble of the night will come from Aoibhín and Vitali Kozmin.

Over 30,000 couples voted for their favourite suppliers and venues in a range of categories, which were then judged by a panel of digital marketing professionals and wedding industry experts. The judges this year were Sara Kennedy, sales and marketing specialist and wedding blogger for IrishWeddingBlog.ie, Mark Richardson,

Ireland’s leading sales and communication skills expert, Ciamh McCrory, digital and communications guru and Laura Holland, Entertainment Editor for Her.ie. Question My partner has been violent towards me and my children. What can I do to stop this and protect my family? Answer If you are concerned about violence in your home, you can contact the Gardaí, who are specially trained to deal with these situations and can offer advice and information. Under the Domestic Violence Act 1996, where there is an order in place, Gardaí have the power to arrest and prosecute a violent family member. There are two main kinds of protection available – a safety order and a barring order. A safety order is an order of the court which prohibits the violent person with whom you are living from further violence or threats of violence. It does not oblige the person to leave the family home. You can also get a safety order against a person with whom you have had a child, even if you are no longer living with or have never lived with the person. It prohibits them from watching or being near your home. A safety order can last up to 5 years. A barring order is an order which requires the person to leave the family home. If you are not married or in a civil partnership, you can get a barring order against a violent partner if you have been living together in an intimate and committed relationship for 6 out of the previous 9 months and if your partner does not own most or all of the house you are living in. A barring order can last up to 3 years. Both types of order can be renewed by applying for a further order before the previous one has expired. Others living together can also apply for protection. For example, a parent can apply for protection against domestic violence by their own child, if the child is over 18. To get a barring order or a safety order, you must apply to the District Court. While you are waiting for the court to hear your application, the court can give you an immediate order, called a protection order. The protection order has the same effect as a safety order. In exceptional circumstances the court can grant an interim barring order. This is an immediate order, requiring the violent person to leave the family home. Further information, including information on support groups, is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

CONTRACT SIGNED FOR 20 NEW HOUSES IN KILLARNEY KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has appointed contractor, Ned O’Shea & Sons Ltd, to construct 20 new housing units in Killarney. The houses are being provided under the government’s Rebuilding Ireland programme at a cost of €3.1m. The units, which will be constructed at The Park, Killarney, will be two-storey threebedroom units which are due to be completed in February 2018. The contract for the project was signed at County Buildings in Tralee in the presence of the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea, the Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin and the Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell. Welcoming the signing of the contract, the Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin said the additional housing units would greatly assist in providing homes to those on the local authority waiting list.

“It is wonderful to see Kerry County Council being in a position to construct houses again and this is particularly welcome in Killarney. These 20 units will help to address the needs of applicants on the housing waiting lists in the area and I look forward to their completion at the earliest opportunity,” said Cllr. Cronin.

Housing waiting list in Killarney Municipal District THERE are currently 1391 approved housing applicants on the waiting list whose area of choice is within the Killarney Municipal District, which covers the whole municipal district and not just Killarney town. “Area of choice” refers to the fact that it is the applicants’ area of choice. It does not mean all applicants are from Killarney or Killarney MD – rather it is their area of choice so some may be from outside the Killarney MD area but on the Killarney waiting list.

opportunity to showcase their talents. “The Killarney Rotary Young Musician competition was established by Killarney Rotarians Barry Murphy and Sean Treacy in 2001,” said Killarney Rotary president Angela O’Connor. “Its success is a testament to the young musicians of Kerry and their parents. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the concert in The Gleneagle Ballroom on Saturday, March 4. Tickets are available in advance or on the door on the night.” Killarney Advertiser is delighted to be media partner and trophies sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. The Killarney Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year won the coveted all-Ireland Rotary International award the Sean Doyle Cup in 2016.

ST PATRICK’S FESTIVAL CILL ÁIRNE TO SHOWCASE DIVERSITY LET’S make our town the greenest in Ireland, is the call by the festival committee behind this year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Killarney. The parade aims to celebrate the work that has been done throughout the community and the St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne committee has called on all clubs, organisations, groups and businesses to play their part. Festival chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly confirmed the festival would feature a “Best Shop Window Display” contest again this year. “Lynes of High Street took the accolade in 2016 but the competition was very tight,” she said. Greening is always going to be a big part of the festival, added Anne Marie. “Please, please, please continue to light up green for this coming St Patrick’s Festival weekend. It would be magical if every business and commercial building took part to make us the greenest town in the land,” she sad, “This year like every year we cannot overemphasise the importance of volunteers in our community and the diversity of the work they do.”

CHILDREN in Kerry living with juvenile arthritis had the recipe for fun this week as members of the Irish Children’s Arthritis Network (ICAN) learned how to create tasty pizzas. Children with juvenile arthritis and their siblings took part in the pizza-making day, organised by the completely voluntary parent-run network ICAN. “These get-togethers are really important as it gives the kids a chance to meet up with others that have juvenile arthritis and take their mind of the daily struggles of living with JIA (juvenile idiopathic arthritis),” said spokeswoman Sheila O’Connor. “A lot of these kids have to have daily physiothera-

n no

py as they are so stiff, and must take medication every day and a lot of them are on biological drugs also which involves injections into there stomach or legs once a week at home, and not to mention all the doctors appointments and travelling up and down to Crumlin hospital to see a rheumatologist so it's tough going for them.” Sheila added: “ICAN then organise these events for the kids to get together and it really does make such a difference to see the kids smiling not having to think about medication or how sore they are because everyone that attends understands each other so we would like to say a big thank you to ICAN.”

Gavin James rocks the INEC

1

HIS fans sang along with verve as Gavin James took centre stage at the INEC for an eagerly awaited gig last Saturday. The last two years have been a blast for Gavin James, but it’s only the beginning for the toweringly-tall, down-to-earth Dubliner whose heavenly voice, heartwarming, spine-tingling songs and habit of jumping in to audiences to start sing-alongs has won him an army of fans around the world. He has had platinum top-five sales for his debut album, Bitter Pill, in Ireland, where he was awarded Song Of The Year for the album’s title track at the Choice Music Prize. Bitter Pill’s global release followed and proof if it were needed that the songs are more than familiar to his fans was evident as the packed Killarney audience sang along last Saturday In the spring of 2015, he appeared on US television's Dancing with the Stars and released a four-track EP titled For You. Later that year, he was invited to open for chart-toppers Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith on their respective tours, and released singles including Bitter Pill from his full-length studio debut of the same name. He has been supporting act for Kodaline, Tori Kelly, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran on their tours. In 2016 James performed at RTÉ's Centenary Concert to mark the 100year anniversary of Ireland's Easter Rising.

Anthony continues to lead Lyme disease campaign KILLARNEY man Anthony Morris has just returned home this week after undergoing antibiotic treatment in the United States for Lyme disease. The former Kerry footballer and civil engineer touched down in Ireland on Sunday after nine months of treatment at a private clinic in Washington DC. “The treatment was very successful but I was exceptionally sick throughout. Within four days of finishing the intravenous antibiotics, I was walking about. By day five, I had no pain,” said Anthony in an interview with the Irish Times. “I felt so good that I could have played a game of football.” Anthony, who had been wheelchair and bed-bound at times over the last nine years, also suffered from severe migraine, chest pains and other debilitating symptoms put down to chronic fatigue syndrome.

He was diagnosed with Lyme disease and co-infections in 2015. The diagnosis was confirmed as an infectious disease in Germany, following negative test results in Ireland. Lyme disease is most common in mountainous and woodland areas where ticks are prevalent. Following his own research into treatments for chronic Lyme disease, Morris opted to move to the United States with his partner, Margaret McCormack and his daughter, Roisin. And following a rigorous course of intravenous and oral antibiotics for nine months at the Jemsek Speciality Clinic in Washington DC, he described himself as feeling “freakishly well”. His family raised the $90,000 cost of treatment and accommodation through an online fund-raising campaign.

Concern at siting of new children’s hospital

PICTURE SUPPLIED BY MOMENTS IN TIME

A view from the back of Scotts in years gone by, which has now become Scott's Street. PICTURE SUPPLIED BY MOMENTS IN TIME

CALL TO ADDRESS ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT WAITING LISTS AT THIS month’s meeting of the South and West Kerry Municipal District, I called on the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, to immediately address (a) the huge waiting list for orthodontic treatment in Kerry and throughout the country and (b) the outrageous charges for treatment, braces, that is putting massive financial hardship on already hard-pressed families. According to HSE figures, the number of patients waiting for orthodontic treatment up to four years is 17,024 and the number waiting for treatment less than two years is 11,573. There has been a drastic scaling back of services since the recession kicked in which has meant for those with a severe need and who qualify for orthodontic treatment, the wait has been getting longer. The population of children under the age of 16 in Ireland has increased by 20% over the last

decade to 1.1 million. However the number of dentists tasked with looking after these young people has fallen by 20% in recent years due to the recruitment embargo. The result of this is that a large number of primary school children are missing their school screening and their dental problems are not being identified in the early stages which has a knock-on effect on emergency cases in later life. Parents are being asked to dish out €4,000 to €5,000 for braces and this is putting parents and families under unfair and exceptional financial pressures. We have all heard of the many cases of people going abroad for treatment and this has to be addressed. Councillor Michael Cahill, Fianna Fáil, Rossbeigh, Glenbeigh

THE Connolly for Kids Hospital group and the Jack and Jill Foundation have written to all members of the Cabinet, submitting that the Cabinet is not in a position to authorise the awarding of the construction contract for the building of the new National Children's Hospital at the St James's Hospital site. Many statements made by Ministers indicate that they appear to be ill informed in relation to key aspects of the project. It has been stated by Ministers that St James's was recommended in reports by national and international experts. There is no evidence of such a recommendation in any expert report. Following the Government decision on the location of the new children's hospital in 2012, St James's was publicly congratulated by an eminent physician in the Seanad for its "aggressive campaigning" to win the children’s hospital. We contend that such aggressive, misinformed campaigning played a part in trumping the interests of children's health leading to an illogical and reckless decision on the siting of the hospital. The principal reason stated for the decision (“better clinical outcomes”) is without basis in fact. In support of this position we would draw your attention to the following: The new (2013) National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) has altered in its composition from that originally set up in 2007, to now be a purely ‘Building Board’, despite the fact that S.I. 246 (2007) has not been amended in that regard, which further raises questions about its authority, legal standing and mandate The new (2013) Children’s Hospital Group Board (CHGB) has no basis in legislation and as far as we are aware, although we would welcome any information to the contrary, no governance structure for the hospital has been determined. When challenged to provide evidence of advantages of the site, the NPHDB/ CHGB has come up with irrelevant and misleading statements. Members of the Cabinet should be aware that the decision by An Bord Pleanála cannot be relied upon as justification for building the new children's hospital at the St James's site since many critical medical issues were deemed to be matters outside of its remit. Mr Jonathan Irwin, Dr Fin Breatnach, Dr Roisin Healy, Ms Aisling McNiffe, Connolly for Kids Hospital Group and The Jack and Jill Foundation

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

MATTHEW 6:24-34: This passage has many beautiful images and encouraging words. Read it slowly and let the words and images speak to you. We all worry, and possibly spend a lot of energy on needless worry. Often the things we worry about never happen. Behind much worry lies a lack of trust in ourselves, in others, and in God. What has helped you to develop the kind of trust that helps you to avoid excessive worrying? One of the situations that can cause anxiety is when we have divided loyalties. “No one can be the slave of two masters.” A clear set of priorities can help us avoid this dilemma. What has helped you be clear in your own mind on where your priorities lie? “Set your hearts on God’s kingdom first.” Has your faith in God helped you in times of anxiety? Your faith will not take away the problems, but knowing that God is with you, no matter what, can make a difference. What is your experience of this? JOHN BYRNE OSA, VERITAS

The envelopes are now available from the parish office. “We would greatly appreciate if the contact people could call to collect and distribute in their particular area,” said a spokesperson. “If you currently do not use an envelope or are new to the parish and would like to have a box of envelopes, please contact the parish office and we’ll organise that for you. Your contribution to the parish is greatly appreciated. Many thanks for your continued support.”

BINGO

BINGO sessions take place in St Mary’s Parish Hall, every Thursday at 9pm; all welcome.

MUSINGS

ALL of us, ordinary and flawed, have at heart a seemingly boundless longing for fulfilment. On this Day of Prayer for Temperance, we consider Matt Talbot, who had only seven people at his funeral in 1925, but whom hundreds of thousands came to see as a beacon of hope that reflects the struggles addiction can impose on someone’s life. He relied on a higher power that affirmed and accepted him, without preconditions. He made an extraordinary journey from the darkness of excessive addiction to wholeness and the light of holiness. Amidst the anxieties and personal anguishes of his own pain-filled days and nights, he shows us the answer to one of the seven questions that Jesus asks in the Gospel today: “Can any of you, for all his worrying, add one single cubit to his span of life?” Matt Talbot could identify with the words of this weekend’s Psalm: “In God is my safety and glory, trust him at all times, pour out your hearts before him.” He imbibed the refreshing waters of grace and renewed his life as a heroic witness of the power and presence of God at work within him. Universal Contour Body Wrap

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains a treatment that has been inspiring confidence for 25 years

WANT a quick and easy way to lose inches, sculpt curves, detoxify, boost circulation and smooth the skin? The Universal Contour Body Wrap is a must-have for parties, weddings, holidays and any other time when you want to look your absolute best! The Universal Contour Wrap is a totally natural, effective and safe way to achieve excellent and lasting inch loss, detoxify the body, cleanse the skin and leave you feeling totally rejuvenated with wonderful smooth and silky skin. Bandages that have been soaking in a warm solution containing only natural minerals and sea are used to clad and reshape the body, lifting flabby buttocks, flattening the abdomen and generally contouring the figure. Once the

bandages that have soaked in the sea clay solution are applied to the body, the effect is that of a giant poultice. The treatment works by drawing out toxins from the fluid around the fat cells, whilst the bandaging technique works to compress and compact the soft fatty tissue, creating a smoother base over which the soft tissue lies. Not only can you expect excellent lasting inch loss, but also a superb treatment that cleanses, detoxifies and tightens the skin Buy a course of treatments and get one absolutely free; this sale at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio ends on Monday, February 27. Well, the hard-working committee of the St Patrick’s Day committee have decided on it as their theme for the 2017 St Patrick’s Day parade. The answer to this has to be yes and in my opinion wouldn't our world, and indeed our town, be a very dull place without that sprinkle of Diversity! You have a wonderful chance to interpret this theme in whatever way you like with your group/organisation this year so go for it! So let's make this St Patrick’s Day a truly embracing occasion where we celebrate diversity and everything that goes with it. Let's count ourselves lucky that we live in a society where we are given the golden opportunity of being able to experience diversity everyday. A perfect theme for our parade. A perfect day to celebrate being Irish. A perfect time to celebrate our Diversity!

RECIPE OF THE WEEK CHICKEN CASSEROLE Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School, shares this recipe for this delicious savoury staple

INGREDIENTS 1 chicken, 1.5 kg, cut into 8 pieces 500 ml chicken stock 4 shallots, peeled 4 potatoes, peeled and cut into large dice 2 or 3 carrots peeled and cut into dice 1 celeriac, peeled and cut into large dice Handful of button mushrooms, cleaned and trimmed 2 heads of garlic, 3 or 4 slices bacon, in small pieces 2 tbsp butter Bunch of thyme Salt and pepper METHOD

Preheat the oven to 180C. Over medium heat, warm the oil in a large pan. Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper, and cook until they are well browned on all sides. Transfer chicken to a platter and keep it in a warm place while you work on the vegetables. Pour off all but two tablespoons of the cooking fat from the pan. Lower the heat to medium, add the butter, onions, shallots, garlic, and thyme, and cook and stir just until the vegetables start to take on a little colour. Add the potatoes, carrots, celeriac and bacon and cook for about five minutes. Cover the pan and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and return the chicken to the pan. Add the chicken stock, bring to the boil. Bake, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes.

Grace Notes Giving back to the community

Adam Kavanagh reviews

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley says she feels she can never give back as much as she has received through singing in church

I JOINED the Church of The Resurrection folk group when I was 14 years old when the group was led by Carmella Sheehy. At the time I was starting singing lessons so this really was the first time in my life when singing became something that I didn't keep to myself anymore. I remember the first mass I sang at. I was in the back row of the group and I was so nervous! It felt strange to be at the top of the church, facing the congregation. After a few weeks I began to feel a great sense of calm as I sang at Mass. As time passed I became more confident and the next hurdle to jump was to sing the Psalm on the altar. This was a very daunting prospect, but, again, once I was up there I felt so at home and so at peace. I have always been quite a naturally shy person so the prospect of standing up in front of people at concerts and competi-

tions was very scary for me. During the time when I was finding my feet as a singer the folk group always kept me grounded and I always felt like I had a home to come back to every time we sang at mass. When I was studying in college I was forced to make the difficult decision to leave the folk group as I often had to stay in Dublin at weekends. It broke my heart to leave and I feel that it was at that time that I became completely disconnected from my voice. After a few years of not singing, Paul O’Raw, and I decided it was time to start up the folk group again. This group is so close to my heart and I urge any of you who have experience singing or playing an instrument to join us. What you give to your church and community, you will receive back ten-fold. • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

Picture perfect day out for Clodagh and David

ITTLE did they know when Clodagh Hurley and David O’Connor booked their wedding photographer that it would be a case of history repeating itself. The Tralee couple enlisted the services of talented Killarney snapper Sally MacMonagle to capture their big day on camera. “We later discovered that Sally’s grandfather Donal MacMonagle was the photographer for my parents’ wedding 35 years previously,” said the bride.

Killarney Advertiser 24.02.17

Clodagh, the daughter of Josephine and Liam Hurley, and David, the son of Margaret and the late John “Walla” O'Connor, were wed in St Brendan's Church, Ardfert, and held their reception in Ballyseede Castle Hotel, Tralee. Clodagh’s sisters Orla Hurley and Gemma Hurley were maid of honour and bridesmaid respectively, while her lifelong friend Sorcha Ryan was bridesmaid. David’s brother Peter O’Connor was best man and his friends Damien Diggins and Vincent Reidy were groomsmen.

The bride and groom's son Jacob O'Connor together with David’s niece Sarah Geaney enjoyed being at the heart of the action as pageboy and flower girl. Clodagh and David met almost 11 years ago, in May 2006, on a night out in Tralee. “We got engaged in New York in January 2014. David proposed on a rooftop over looking the Empire State Building at night-time,” said Clodagh. Their wedding day had The Great Gatsby as its theme. The bride looked picture-perfect in a

Maggie Sottero gown which she sourced in Aibheil bridal boutique in Adare, Co Limerick. “We made the most of the last of the long evenings by lighting sparklers after the meal,” said Clodagh. “We also released doves after the ceremony in the church.” The newlyweds, who will reside in Tralee, jetted to the Caribbean for their honeymoon. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

Welcome

T

o our second Home & Living of 2017. Where have January and February gone? Summer is fast approaching and we are looking at one of the most functional rooms in the house this month, the bathroom. See our top trends for 2017 and check out our piece on a traditional bathroom makeover. Our featured house this month is a beautiful family home on the doorstep of the National Park.

In addition, Cremur have given us their four key tips for redecorating your bathroom.

My top picks this month are Corcoran’s freestanding bath and the Alchimia tiles from National Tile which are amazing and so on trend, with green being the Pantone colour of the year.

The history of the horse trough/hog scaler... sorry, I mean freestanding bath... The Freestanding Bath has long enjoyed a reputation as a status-symbol. Documented early plumping systems for bathing go back as far as around 3300BC. The claw foot tub had its origins in the mid 18th century and originated in Holland and was once enjoyed only by the aristocracy.

An early advertisement by Kohler advertised the claw bath as “a horse trough/ hog scalder when furnished with four legs will serve as a bathtub.” Centuries of refinement and the discovery of new materials has helped to introduce it into the everyday household – though owning one is still considered the height of luxury! With its popularity rising, and the play on different shapes and styles, there is no limit to what designers can create – the freestanding bath has never been more exciting!

We hope you enjoy this month’s Home & Living. If you have a design query or would like your home or project featured in our Home & Living section, we’d love to hear from you, just email decorating@killarneyadvertiser.ie

Top Bathroom Trends that will be huge in 2017

If you’re planning a refresh or redesign of your bathroom, this year promises to bring tons of personality. Think of your bathroom as a room rather than just a functional space, with texture, furniture and rugs finding their way into bathrooms for 2017 turning our bathrooms into a mini sanctuary. 1. Statement furniture; The bathroom may not have been where you would traditionally think about putting a chair or ottoman, but it really adds a touch of warmth to a room that can often seem cold.

3. Rugs; Throw rugs are not just for your living room anymore, the place to see all the best rugs this year is in the bathroom, it’s a great way to add colour or pattern and of course that all important warmth. 4. Patterned Tiles, we saw patterned tiles sneaking their way into bathroom last year but this year they are huge Moroccan inspired designs, art deco black and white they work well with simple white suites or a roll top bath alike.

Brennan collection available to order from Dunnes stores Killarney. 7. Minimalist cabinets, with all the other statement trends for bathrooms the cabinets are going minimal in order to ensure the space doesn’t feel to crowded.

Vanity Unit, Corcoran's Furniture & Carpets

8. Art, we are getting braver with art, and this can be seen in the trend for art in the bathroom, modern prints and even a complete gallery wall, call it the loo-vre.

2. Freestanding tubs are not going anywhere soon and are still the go-to for a statement bathroom. More retailers are offering smaller options for those bathrooms where space is tight. Whether your style is traditional or modern there is a freestanding bath out there to suit your needs.

Burlington Collection, Mcelligotts Castleisland

Bathroom Tiles, Corcoran's Furniture & Carpets 5. Mirrors; Statement mirrors have always been a sure way to add character to your bathroom, especially if you have a small bathroom the bigger the better as it reflects light. Think furniture shop for this accessory.

6. Five Star; we all want the hotel luxe at the moment, even our soap and shampoo bottles have to match and look pretty, and fluffy towels are a must. Try the Francis

9. Paper the walls, we have seen wallpaper make a huge comeback over the last few years, and why should the bathroom be left out the bolder the better perfect for the country mansion feel or just a huge statement in a small downstairs W.C. Be brave with this one the darker and quirkier the better.

O

UR bathroom makeover happened a bit by accident as we live in an old stone house and required an extension. My husband used this opportunity to replace some beams over our kitchen and as this meant dismantling our bathroom, it was a great excuse to revamp it (not that I need an excuse!). I wanted to stay with the traditional feel but in a contemporary style. We started with the floors as we don’t have the luxury of underfloor heating – this wasn’t too widespread 100 years ago! So we went with a wooden floor. Worried about maintenance and water, water, water everywhere (I have two boys) we chose an engineered board. This doesn’t tend to warp and can still be resurfaced if needs be but I have been pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to keep. Next was the bath, which was on my wish list for a long time. It still keeps with the traditional look but the stainless steel skirt keeps the look modern and being reflective gives the feeling of space. When we went to buy our shower my husband fell in love with the sink in the showroom and it fitted in perfectly as well as being practical. We both love panelling so that was an easy choice. Our bathroom panelling is painted in French White by Colortrend and the walls are Dovetail by Farrow & Ball.

Traditional Bathroom Makeover Sourcing THE flooring is engineered white oak wideboard from National Tile. The shower and sink are from National Tile also. The marble table is by Hal-Lou. We reused our blind, as I couldn’t part with it. It is a Linwood fabric and the Fabulous Fabric Company stocks Linwood Fabrics.

Accessories The candles are from Dunnes Stores and the bath mat is also from Dunnes Stores, from its Francis Brennan collection. The mirror is Mylestone Interiors. Both the jars and black press are by TK Maxx. The prints and basket are from Ikea. We use the basket for towel storage and the prints were temporary until I could find something with orange to match the blind but got put on my wish list. Getting a rug is another wish list item…my wish lists seem to get longer the older I get! Noelle

Tim O’Shea and Friends hit all the right notes with new CD NEWS that acclaimed musicians Tim O’Shea and Friends have made a new CD has delighted trad lovers across Ireland and beyond. The group will unveil the recording “another skin too few” as part of the Gathering Festival in Killarney. This is Tim’s fifth CD and it will be launched at the INEC Upstairs Bar, on Saturday, February 25, at 5.30pm by Sean Laffey, editor of the Irish Music Magazine. “The CD features musicians, new music, new songs, original tracks and new sounds,” said Tim O’Shea. “We are happy, proud and humbled to have arrived at this time and place to mark a musical milestone, 25 years on the road.” The title of this CD, “another skin

Tim O’Shea with fellow Kerry musicians Rosie Healy and Michael D. Kelliher.

too few” has two origins. “Skin” is a slang term in Ireland, meaning someone of good character, “a sound skin”. It can also refer to the literal skin(s) or layers of an onion. Using this idea, Tim says he modified it and

was inspired by a documentary on English folk singer Nick Drake, called “A skin too few”. “Nick’s sister referred to him as not having enough (onion) ‘skins’ to survive the vagaries of life,” said Tim.

“Sadly, it can be common to overlook the music of local musicians and their valuable contribution to the tradition and local music, until they are gone. Presented here you will find a contribution and choice of local music, shaped and influenced by local musicians.” The musicians remembered are Paddy Cronin, (Killarney and Boston), John Cronin (Aghadoe and New York), Steven Carroll (Kilcummin) and Con Durham (Dublin and Dingle). There is a mix of tunes and songs, including one original song by Tim, and an original spoken word piece by Belfast poet Adrian Fox. The new recording will also be available on CD Baby and iTunes soon.

Michael Healy-Rae suggests 'calling in the army' to tackle rhododendron HE HIT the headlines this week when Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae claimed that the spread of rhododendron in Killarney National Park is so bad that the army may have to be called in to sort it out. Speaking during Tuesday evening’s topical issues debate in the Dáil, Deputy Healy-Rae appealed for more resources for Killarney National Park. He said: "People are inclined to think that when it comes to a national park, that you close the gates and let it off. That you don't maintain the deer population. You don't aggressively attack the rhododendrons. "The rhododendron situation in Killarney National Park is gone so bad, Minister, nothing short of calling in the army is going to put it right." Responding, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development Michael Ring said

his department spent over €2m in Killarney National Park last year. On the rhododendron issue, he said: "My Department has invested heavily in tackling this invasive species, the control of which is difficult, costly and labour intensive. "The management of the rhododendron is a long-standing ongoing programme in the national parks. He added: "Since 2011 the department has invested over €700,000 to tackle the rhododendron clearance in Killarney National Park and in 2016 alone the department spent €209,611 on clearance. "An updated Strategic Rhododendron Plan is being finalised and the department hopes to publish this in the coming months." Mr Healy-Rae said: "You rightly state the money that has been spent but we are losing

the war with regard to the rhododendron." Later Mr Ring called on the people of Killarney to come in and sit down with the Dsepartment "to see what support and help they can give us to deal with this very serious problem that we have in Killarney Park". Deputy Healy-Rae, who at one stage worked for the Office of Public Works, paid tribute to Killarney Advertiser for our highlighting of the rhododendron problem earlier this year. “I feel your campaign was an important one,” he told Killarney Advertiser.

THE Killarney Soroptimist Club will host its annual pancake and coffee morning this Shrove Tuesday, February 28, from 10.30am to 12 noon at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. All proceeds from this year’s event are being donated to "Home from Home" After School Services, Killarney. Tickets are €15. The Home from Home After School Service for children with special needs commenced operation at 9/10 The Paddocks Ballydowney on December 1, 2009. The service began in the grounds of St Mary of the Angels Beaufort adjacent to St Frances Special School

run by the Franciscan sisters. In 2005 The Franciscan sisters decided they could no longer run the campus, and they handed it over to St John of God to run. As the room the children were using as ‘Tig Roisin’ was needed for other services, the parents got together to form a committee and set up a stand a lone after school service for their children. With the funding from Pobal, a two story double house was purchased at 9/10 The Paddocks Ballydowney, Killarney in 2008 and was opened on December 1, 2009, after some refurbishment was completed.

The Provocateur KILLARNEY HAS THE RECIPE FOR SUCCESS NOT to sound biased, but Killarney is home to some truly wonderful eateries, from cafes, to barfood providers, and both standalone and hotel restaurants. Why, then, has not a single one been included in a list published this week of the 100 best restaurants in Ireland? John and Sally McKenna, as published in The Sunday Times, released their annual 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland 2017 guide, which saw Ireland experience a “tsunami of brilliant new openings” over the past year, according to the McKennas. But it left a pretty sour taste in my mouth to see that not only was Killarney mystifyingly absent from the list, but Kerry was only represented by a quartet of restaurants. (And congratulations to the four fantastic Kerry eateries to make it onto the foodies’ list, Daroka, Ballybunion; Idá’s, Dingle; Global Village, Dingle; and Mulcahy’s Restaurant, Kenmare.) The McKennas note: “Serious restaurants with ambitious cooking used to be easy to spot. They had French names, waiters in bow ties, à la carte menus, and a head chef. Today, the best cooking in Ireland can be found in art galleries, in remote upstairs rooms, in public gardens, in pubs, in wine bars, in garden centres and even takeaways.” The couple have said: “When we wrote and published the first edition of the 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland, back in 1992, it was difficult to find 100 exceptional Irish restaurants. It was a struggle to write the book.” Fast forward 25 years, and the list, they state, is harder than ever to compile – “We struggle to cope with the tsunami of brilliant new openings,” they state. The 100 Best Restaurants in Ireland features 29 Dublin establishments, and 18 in Cork. Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? VIEWS VIEWSFROM FROMKERRY KERRYAND ANDAROUND AROUNDTHE THEWORLD WORLD

NASA REVEALS DETAILS OF ENTIRE NEW SOLAR SYSTEM THAT COULD SUPPORT LIFE Last week, Trevor O’Donoghue discussed Pluto and the existence of planets in orbit around other stars (exoplanets). Since then, NASA has announced further discoveries in this field at a press conference on Wednesday NASA HAS provided details of an exoplanet system located around a relatively close star. The star, Trappist-1 is an ultra-cool red dwarf, much smaller than our Sun and located 39 light years from Earth. The star plays host to a remarkable planetary system. NASA has discovered seven planets in orbit around the star. All of them are rocky or earthlike planets and three of these planets are found in the habitable or Goldilocks zone. The habitable or Goldilocks zone is the region around a star where the temperature is just right to allow liquid water to exist. These three planets are all earth-size rocky worlds and the scientists have announced that one of them is likely to have a water-rich composition. What is remarkable about this discovery is that the star plays hosts to so many rocky worlds, and that so many of these worlds are earth like or rocky, and also that three of the worlds might have liquid water on their surface. That NASA was able to discover these worlds at all is testament to the speed at which the science in this discipline is advancing. Next year will see the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, This telescope will carry instruments on board that will allow us to probe the atmospheres of these planets, if they have atmospheres, and ascertain what they are made of. Scientists will be looking for oxygen,

TALKING POINTS Champagne and avocados back in shopping baskets

ozone, methane and other gasses that serve as biosignatures hinting at the presence of life on other worlds. For the moment, we can just speculate on what the planets may hold. So, what about going out tonight and having a look. Trappist-1 is located in the constellation of Aquarius, but unfortunately the star is much smaller than the Sun and consequently much dimmer. It is impossible to see without a really large telescope. For all those thinking of little green men, the scientists who look for extraterrestrial life (SETI) have already pointed their radio telescopes at the system, but have found nothing. Even if we sent a signal to the planets, we would have to wait almost 80 years for any response! •Feeling curious about the world around you? Email any science-related questions you might have to Trevor at ftrevorodonoghue@gmail.com or see http://www.trevorodonoghue.com

IT SEEMS our palates are more refined than ever, according to the Central Statistics Office which announced this week that it has changed the basket of goods and services it uses to measure inflation. Avocados as well as melons and sweet potatoes have been added, while consumer preferences have also changed in the area of alcohol, with champagne and craft beer sitting pretty in the basket. Not only that but fresh hake has swum centre stage in place of plaice and whiting. The new basket took effect from January 2017. The basket is updated every five years to reflect consumer habits, and the latest changes suggest Irish habits have changed markedly since the beginning of 2012. When a new item is included in the basket, this does not imply consumers previously did not purchase this good or service, rather the item has become popular enough to warrant inclusion in a sample of representative items. Larger TVs are also in vogue, with categories changed to reflect TVs “greater than 40 inches. Meanwhile, clock radios, blank CDs, and camcorders have all been cut from the list. Champagne had fallen out of the basket five years earlier only to return this time.

Debby Looney on how blooms are already filling he air with fragrance

AREN’T gardens looking splendid at the moment? Early-flowering Camellias, such as “Donation”, and Rhododendrons, such as Rhododendron barbatum are a beautiful backdrop for daffodils, crocus and iris. Clusters of primroses compete with hellebores, and the bright yellow blooms of the broom, Cytisus praecox, are already filling the air with their sweet scent. I have been asked whether there are any climbers which flower in the winter or very early spring, and I am happy to say that indeed there are! Clematis “Freckles” is an evergreen climber, producing sweet scented cream to purple “freckled” flowers from November to April. It has a tidy habit, and is of great help to bees throughout the winter. Another beauty is Jasminum nudifolium, which brightens the darkest months with the brightest yellow starry flowers. It tends to grow informally, in other words, plant it somewhere it has space! We are coming close to the end of the dormant season, another month or so is left. This means that if you want to plant any bare rooted plants, you might want to consider doing it soon. I have been asked whether there

are advantages to planting bare rooted plants – financially it makes a huge difference, and logistically it makes sense too. Hedging plants can be bought for a fraction of the price, and when transporting them home they take up much less space than container grown plants. If you are planting a hedge, I would urge you to plant as diversely as possible. Originally hedgerows were made up of several different species, such as Hawthorn and Blackthorn, crab apples, Rosa rugosa, privet, holly, beech and Viburnum opulus, the Guelder rose. These hedges not only provide you with year round interest, but from an environmental point of view they are preferable to a single species hedge. Mixed species hedging provide an array of feeding options – different birds prefer different berries, for example. A hedgerow provides “corridors” for wildlife to travel through, which helps maintain diversity and prevents habitat isolation. Hedgerows are becoming increasingly important on a national scale, and Teagasc has some very interesting information available for downloading on its website, www.teagasc.ie

New ASD Unit comprising two classrooms on the horizon for Killarney Community College KILLARNEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE is set to receive a new ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) unit, which will consist of two classrooms. The pupil-teacher ratio in these units is 6:1 and pupils are further supported by a minimum of two Special Needs Assistants per class. There are also early intervention classes for children of pre-school age who are on the autistic spectrum.

54

Killarney Advertiser 24.02.17

The Seanad Leas-Cathaoirleach and Fine Gael Kerry Senator, Paul Coghlan, has welcomed the announcement. “ASD units cater for the needs of children with Autism who are of school-going age and they are attached to a mainstream and special schools,” said Senator Coghlan. "I am delighted that Killarney Community College is set to benefit from a new ASD unit, which

comprises two classrooms. The funding has been approved by the School Building Unit; however the publication of the amount of grant aid sanctioned could prejudice the tendering process for an individual project and as a result it cannot be disclosed. “Compliments are due to the management and staff of Killarney Community College for their dedication to seeing this project over

the line, alongside the Department of Education. “It is essential that we continue to work to ensure that our children have the most comfortable and up to date facilities in their schools during these formative years, so that there is no distraction from their education and enjoyment of school life. “The recent Action Plan for Education sets education at the heart of all of our ambitions as a nation.”

THIS IS WHAT FORMULA ONE WILL LOOK LIKE THIS SEASON JUST days away from the start of F1 pre-season testing. That’s always an exciting time, but this year, new technical rules means the cars will be very different. Both the Williams F1 team and the Sauber F1 team (pictured) have unveiled their new cars, and they look amazing. New rules dictate the cars are much wider than

before, and with larger tyres and swept back aerodynamics. The cars are wider, from 1.80 to 2 metres; the tyres are 25% wider; the front and rear wings are wider as well; plus the diffuser is being enlarged. This means more downforce, more grip and, as a result, faster lap times. The width of the front tyres has increased

from 245 to 305mm, that of the rear tyres from 325 to 405mm, and when combined with extra downforce, 2017 cars could be up to 3-5 seconds faster per lap than last year. And to put that in perspective, something as small as a second is a huge gulf of time in Formula 1. An exciting year ahead.

Toyota teases autonomous i-TRIL Concept TOYOTA has released a single teaser image of the i-TRIL Concept, an all-electric autonomous vehicle now confirmed to make its world debut at the Geneva motor show on March 7. The i-TRIL, which features a one-plus-two-seat cabin layout, is claimed to offer “an alternative to city cars, other electric vehicles and motorcycles”. “The i-TRIL Concept is aimed at people who want to have fun even while driving at slow speeds

around cities and is also capable of operating autonomously,” said the Japanese car-maker in a press release. Developed by Toyota Motor Europe in collaboration with the company’s ED2 design studio in Nice, the three-seat i-TRIL incorporates the same Active Lean technology seen in Toyota’s i-Road prototype, which leans into corners “to provide high levels of stability, safety and comfort”.

COUNCIL COMMENCES €300,000 PLUNKETT STREET UPGRADE

One of Killarney’s main thoroughfares is currently undergoing a major revamp, reports Eve Kelliher

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has commenced a €300,000 upgrade of Plunkett Street, Killarney, as part of its continuing investment in enhancing the town centre. The street is one of the busiest and most popular streets in Killarney, and has significant footfall and traffic flow. The works involve the development of a shared street surface, providing significant improvements in particular for pedestrians, with new granite paving and asphalt road surface at the same level. It will result in a more pedestrian-friendly environment, complementing the works done previously on the adjoining Main Street. “During the statutory planning process, the

proposed works were positively commented on, particularly by the businesses on Plunkett Street, and the scheme was unanimously adopted by the members of Killarney Municipal District at a meeting last October,” said a spokesman for Kerry County Council. “As soon as Kerry County Council had details on the schedule and timing of the works, the local area engineer met with the businesses and outlined the potential impacts during the construction phase, and which we have targeted for completion before the main tourism season commencing in Easter. “Every effort has been made to minimize the impact on businesses by phasing the works

during the low season and access for customers will be maintained at all times. Deliveries will also be maintained from the existing parking bays on Main Street and College Street, as was always the case.” The works are being supervised by the local area engineer, and his contact details have been distributed to all of the businesses impacted, added Kerry County Council. “The investment of €300,000 by Kerry County Council is a commitment to further improving Killarney and our beautiful county, in partnership with the local community, to enhance the experience of those living, working and visiting the town,” stated the local authority.

MAYOR AND CHAMBER PRESIDENT WELCOME ‘MAJOR UPGRADE’ THE Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin, says the works are further evidence of Kerry County Council’s commitment to investing in infrastructure in Killarney town. The project involves the widening of footpaths along the street as well as the laying of a very high-

spec road surface, noted Cllr Cronin, who described the works as “a major upgrade”. “About €300,000 will be spent on the street which will further enhance facilities for pedestrians and motorists alike,” said Cllr Cronin. He added: “Plunkett Street and Main Street are the absolute

centre of our most central tourist destination. The volume of people that travel on this street is unbelievable.” The widening of the footpaths will make the area more accessible to all, he added. “I think it is critically important and a vital investment for the future. We have to look at

the long-term vision for the town.” Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Paul O’Neill welcomed the enhancement as “a fantastic development”. “It is going to be huge benefit to the town in general and we just hope that the work will be done as quickly and as unintrusively as possible,” he said.

Traders have their say TRADERS and residents along the street have broadly welcomed the works, and are looking forward to seeing Plunkett Street enhanced. While some have voiced concern about when the work is taking place and the length of time it will take, most are keen to see the new-look thoroughfare unveiled. Roberto Taddei of the Allegro said: “I think it will be very nice when it’s finished. I am looking forward to it – the sooner the better!” Owen Reen of Reens Life Pharmacy was in agreement, adding: “I hope that the works can be completed as soon as possible.” A spokesman for O’Leary’s Expert Electrical said: “It is for the betterment of the street. It will mean safer footpaths and no trucks and buses going through. “It is something that has to be done and you can’t have an omelette without breaking eggs. Overall it will make a great job of the street and the street will be safer for all.”

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

From your loving granddaughters who miss you everyday Mandy, Jennifer and Rachel.

Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. There’s a special Angel in heaven that’s a part of us It is not where we wanted her But where God wanted her to be. She was here but just for a year Like a night time shooting star And though she is in heaven She isn’t very far. She touched the hearts of many Like only an Angel can do We would have held her every minute If the end we really knew. So we send this special message To the heaven up above Please take care of our Angel Mary Kate and send her all our love. We miss you and love you so Your family Mom, Dad, Brother Jack, Nan, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

Treasured memories of my beautiful God-Daughter and cousin Mary Kate, who became an Angel on the 21st of February 2007 aged one year old. A light went out on earth the day you said goodbye, And on that day a star was born the brightest in the sky, Reaching through the darkness with it’s rays of purest white, Lighting up the heavens as it once lit up our lives. Princess For your birthday I lay 11 roses on your grave But what I’d do to have you back is much more than I can say. Always loved and never forgotten by your Godmother Melissa. xxxx

In loving memory of Albert Klausner formerly Salzburg, Austria and Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney. A wonderful husband, Papa and Opa who died on February 27th 2014.

In loving memory of my wonderful Papa Albert Klausner formerly of Salzburg, Austria and late of Gortroe, Fossa, Killarney who died in Germany on February 27th 2014.

In loving memory of my wonderful Papa Albert Klausner formerly Salzburg, Austria and Gortroe, Fossa who died on February 27th 2014.

We hold ye close within our hearts, And there ye shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again.

Each day as evening starts to set The ache builds in my chest I know that I must go to bed And try to get some rest.

Some days I hear your voice and turn to see your face; Yet in my turning, it seems the sound has been erased.

So Rest In Peace dear loved ones, And thanks for all ye have done, We pray that God has given ye, The crown ye truly won.

I hug my tear-stained pillow close When no one is around And cry for the one I loved and lost And scream without a sound.

Who will I turn to for answers when life does not make sense; Who will be there to hold me close when the pieces just don’t fit.

Loved and remembered by your son Eamonn, daughter-in-law Caroline, your daughter Evelyn, son-in-law Johnny and grandchildren Shane, Dayna, Katie, Amy, Sarah & Louise.

Others see me in the day And think I’m doing well But everyday as evening sets I enter my own hell.

Oh, Papa, if I could turn back time and once more hear your voice; I’d tell you that out of all the papa’s you would still be my choice.

Time hasn’t healed my pain at all Or quieted my fears So every night, alone in bed I shed those silent tears.

Please always know I love you and no one can take your place; The years may come and go but your memory will never be erased.

Goodbye my love Goodbye My love will never die And when my life is through God will lead me straight to you.

Today, Jesus, as You are listening in your home above; Would you go and find my papa and give him all my love.

Until we meet again. Bis wir un’s wieder sehen Ruhe in Frieden Rest In Peace

Sem and the Green go

head-to-head in Corn Uí Mhuirí final Everything is set up nicely for a classic Tralee v Killarney clash, writes Adam Moynihan ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE V TRALEE CBS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25, AT 4.30PM (AUSTIN STACK PARK, TRALEE) SATURDAY’S Munster colleges final will be an all-Kerry affair as holders St Brendan’s get set to duke it out with Tralee CBS in Austin Stack Park. There has always been a keen rivalry between this tournament’s two most successful teams and, if their recent Facebook activity is anything to go by, there’s no danger of this particular batch of players burying the hatchet any time soon. The last time these two sides met, in the O’Sullivan Cup in September, it was the Sem who came out on top. The reigning All-Ireland champions put on a typically attack-minded display and eventually ran out sixpoint winners in a feisty, highscoring contest (2-23 to 3-14). Garry McGrath’s charges went on to hammer Mercy Mounthawk and then pip Dingle in the final to cement their status as the best team in Kerry for the second year in a row. Their form in the Corn Uí Mhuirí has

been even more impressive. Having made light work of ISK, De La Salle (Macroom) and Bandon in the group stage, they defeated Dingle with fifteen points to spare in the quarters and booked their place in the final with another

Rugby news & views WITH a break in the Six Nations last weekend, attention focused on the PRO 12 league. Leinster hosted Edinburgh at the RDS, safe in the knowledge that a win would place them at the top of league. A stunning display say the home side win 39-10 with a cracking brace of tries by flyhalf Joey Carberry and winger Barry Daly adding two of his own. Leinster secured a bonus point victory, which gave them the top berth in the league, albeit for one night. With spots in the top-four places so close, the Ospreys V Munster was always going to be a vital match as either would go clear with a win. Munster started poorly with the Ospreys playing good rugby to steam

comfortable win over Flannan’s in the semis. The Sem put up some huge scores en route to their Hogan Cup triumph in 2016 and they’ve certainly carried their free-scoring form into this season: they’re averaging a ridiculous 25.3 total points per game. Their lowest score so far was 1-15 against De La Salle and they still

with Liam Murphy

ahead 17-3 with only 25 minutes on the clock. However a training ground move saw Jack O’Donoghue close the gap with a fantastic try, leaving the score 20-18 at half time. Munster pushed hard in the second half and Darren Sweetnam surely gave Joe Schmidt something to think about with top-drawer rugby. In the end, Munster forged ahead with a try by Tyler Bleyendaal, who converted to hand the visitors a two-point victory in the end, and back to the top of the PRO12. What a season the mighty men in red are having, it’s hard to see past them for either a PRO12 or European Cup this year! Next weekend, Ireland host France

at the Aviva in the next round of the Six Nations. A tough match is on the cards and it will be good to see CJ quieten his detractors, as articles targeting his residency seem to dominate headlines recently. Let’s hope the lads can put Guy Noves’ men to the sword as they look to secure the remaining matches and a possible decider with England on St Patrick’s weekend, though it is hard to see England slipping up anytime soon as they play sublime rugby. The Six Nations has it all and this weekend will be very interesting for sure.

managed to win that game by seven points. The Green, meanwhile, topped Group A following wins over Coláiste na Sceilge and Coláiste Choilm (Ballincollig), and a draw with Rochestown. They beat ISK by a goal in the last eight before finally getting the better of Chríost Rí at the third time of asking in the semi-final. Banisteoir Marc Ó Sé will be hoping to end a relatively barren spell for the Tralee school – they haven’t won the Corn Uí Mhuirí since 2007 – and in the process dethrone this formidable St Brendan’s outfit. It won’t be an easy task by any manner of means. With the likes of David Shaw, who kicked six points in their last outing, and Billy Courtney manning the middle, Cian Gammell marshalling the back line and captain Dara Moynihan leading the attack the Sem are stacked with talent at the moment. If they approach the game correctly and perform to their potential they should have enough to win on Saturday and clinch the school’s first back-to-back Munster titles since 1974. The Green will be going all out to knock the Killarney boys of their perch, and the Sem will be hoping to put the Tralee boys back in their box. It should be an interesting game.

Smalltalk Ahead of this weekend’s Corn Uí Mhuirí final, Sem captain Dara Moynihan talks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates (mostly Billy Courtney), their rivalry with the Green (sort of) and his favourite joke

Hi Dara. Thanks for talking to us. No bother. You’re doing the Leaving this year. How’s that going? Yerra. Could be better. Studying hard? Trying to. Do you know what you’re going to do next year? I’ll go to Tralee IT, I’d say. What are you hoping to study? Ag Science. Big game coming up on Saturday. Are you looking forward to it? I can’t wait for it. There’s a good mood in the camp. Confident? We’re confident enough but you can’t be too confident. There seems to be a bit of a rivalry between yourselves and the Green… No comment. [laughs] Fair enough. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? Niall Donohue. Who’s the biggest moaner? Mark Harnett. Who’s the worst-dressed? Billy Courtney.

And the most embarrassing? I dunno, to be honest… Missing a 13-yard free in an U-21 game. If you had to compare yourself to an inter-county footballer, who would it be? Brian Dooher. Why? He’s the first name that came into my head the uncle said it to me the last day! If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? George Best, Usain Bolt and Conor McGregor. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Snooker. What’s your least favourite sport? Golf. It’s too boring. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Robbie Brady’s goal against Italy. Do you have any nicknames? Fat Cheeks. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? Snapchat. Who’s the best snapper around? Billy Courtney. He never gets off it. What’s your most-used emoji?

Billy’s getting an awful doing. Who spends the most time in the gym? Mark O’Shea. Who’ll be the next player from the Sem to play for Kerry? Paul O’Shea. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? I don’t know who to say for this… We’ll say Shane Cronin. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Cian Gammell. Would you rather captain Spa to an O’Donoghue Cup or captain the Kerry seniors to an All-Ireland? Jeez I’ll have to say Spa. I’ll be killed if I say the other thing. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? Fossa. What’s your proudest sporting moment? Winning the Hogan Cup and winning the minor All-Ireland.

72

Killarney Advertiser 24.02.17

What’s the best show on TV? Peaky Blinders. What’s your favourite album? Something by Ed Sheeran. What’s your go-to number when a sing-song kicks off? Boys of Barr na Sráide. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? Niall Donohue. What would you have for your last meal? Bacon and cabbage. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Brad Pitt. Can you tell me a joke? [tells massively inappropriate joke] I can’t print that! Cheers, Dara. No bother.

COMMUNITY GAMES What a fantastic start to the 2017 Community Games season for Kilcummin with medals collected on our first weekend out. Keel Community Centre was the venue for the U12 and U16 County solo music finals on Saturday last. Young Micheal Healy – who is only 10 years old – represented the parish in U12 grade and with a stunning performance of a jig and a reel on accordion he stormed to a well-deserved victory and took home the gold medal and will now represent the county at the All-Irelands. Not to be outdone, older brother Kirill performed brilliantly on tin whistle in the U16 grade and was awarded with third place and a bronze medal in a very strong field. Congratulations also to Ruth Doyle who gave an excellent performance in U16 solo singing in Abbeydorney on Sunday and came fourth with a Certificate for her good work. Well done also to Lea O’Connell who represented Kilcummin in the U12 solo singing, and whilst not in the medals, she can be very proud of her performance. Well done to all four young stars, no doubt but you will benefit from the experience. You did yourself, your family and your parish proud last weekend.

Athletic started brightly and a Paudie Clifford free kick gave us a deserved lead before Paudie scored his second getting on the end of a Martin Crowley cross. Listowel got one back on the stroke of half time through a penalty to leave the half time lead to a minimum. In the second half and Listowel through their star striker Aidan Quinn got 2 quick fire goals. A Motivational boost from coach Joe Daly fired the team back into the game and another Joe Hurley delivery flicked on by Chris O Meara found the back of the net to draw things level. Athletic had late chances but to no avail. Best for the blues Alan Daly , Mark Griffen and Martin Crowley. U16 Kerry Cup Fenit Sapphires 0-2 Killarney Athletic The blues progressed with a win over a resilient Fenit team who defended well throughout the game against an Athletic team who should be more clinical in front of goal. Liam Kelliher with both goals which in turn makes him the clubs top scorer at u16 level in his personal battle with strike partner Harry Potts. Numerous Athletic chances that would have killed the game off by half time but for poor finishing and a Fenit keeper in top form kept the home side in the game. A great team performance with introductions of U15 players Eoghan O Sullivan and Owen Benson who have quickly adjusted to the physical game. Liam Kelliher shades the man of the match from Owen Benson.

Spa Muckross Community Games

CELEBRATIONS Spa GAA Club’s Quiz & Set Dancing groups received a fantastic welcome home from Belfast on Sunday 12th February. Both groups had competed in All-Ireland Scór na nÓg that weekend. The quiz team performed brilliantly, and were a mere 2 points behind the eventual winners. The fact that the Set Dancers won out their competition later that evening probably brought mixed emotions, and this certainly was the case for Kianan O’Doherty, who was on both teams. Kianan, a young man who has competed with Spa Muckross Community Games in probably too many competitions to mention (High Jump at Nationals was the final one I think), gave a fantastic speech. His parents, Spa Muckross Community Games Chairperson Donal, and fellow committee member Linda, watched proudly. Well done to all. FUTSAL Congratulations to our u13 boys futsal team who competed in Milltown last Sunday. They won all 3 games - Fossa 2-1, Keel 3-1 and Kenmare 4-2. The final is next weekend. Venue will be decided between Milltown and Duagh. Huge thanks to Connie Lynch and Pat O’Neill for managing the team. CHURCH GATE COLLECTION The Killarney Community Games church gate collection was held this weekend. JOHNNY KELLY SCRAMBLE: We got our main competition programme off to a successful start this morning as the Johnny Kelly Memorial Scramble attracted a turnout of over 30 players with plenty of good scoring on the day. The morning started off with a ceremonial Captain’s DriveIn as Captain’s Johnny Kelly (Gents), Eileen Switzer (Ladies) and Darragh O’Callaghan (U-16’s) hit their teeshots before the Three Ball Scramble got underway in earnest for its 11th staging. Eileen certainly had a day to remember as she teamed up with Robbie O’Brien Jnr and Michael O’Connor to win the Overall Nett and Memorial Shield with a score of 62 2/3. One of the members of last year’s winning team, Damien Fleming, was amongst the prizes again this year as he shot an impressive 30 under par score alongside Michael Cotter and Betty O’Brien to win the Overall Gross with 78. The Second Nett prize was won by three unrelated O’Brien’s as Jason, Sean and Conor shot a score of 66 1/3 to claim the final of the three prizes on offer today. The club wishes to extend its thanks to the Grounds Committee for the condition of the course and the Kelly family for the spread of food they put on for all players afterwards. PAUL O’SULLIVAN SCRAMBLE This County Board event takes place on Sunday with a 9.15am start in Castleisland. Play is over 36 holes, entry is €10 per player and it is open to all 2016 registered PPUI members in the county. We encourage our members to support this event and with this event in there will be no Sunday competition at the course this weekend. Killarney RFC

SENIORS Our seniors traveled to Dungarvan last Sunday for the semi final of the Bank Of Ireland Munster Junior Bowl, looking to build upon the previous weeks win over neighbours Killorglin. Unfortunately, Dungarvan got the upper hand on the day to run out winners on a scoreline of 24 points to 13. The lads will look to move on and next Sunday will cross the county bounds one more time. This time they take on Fethard and District in the final of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. This match takes place at Tanner Park in Ballincollig at 2pm. Please come along and support the lads in the biggest game of the year for the club. We are looking at putting on a bus for supporters, if there is enough interest. Contact Paul Murphy on 0873745351 for details or to book a spot. 6 NATIONS RAFFLE We held our 6 Nations raffle last Saturday evening, at the Killarney Avenue Hotel, following the Munster match. There was a huge interest in the draw and we would like to thank everyone who supported this fundraiser for the club. We raised over €3,000 in the raffle. First prize was two tickets for the Ireland V England match on St. Patrick’s weekend in Dublin. And as luck would have it, the winner was Liam Murphy. Second prize was two tickets to see the Ireland take on France next weekend and the winner was Mike Conway, from Tralee. The club would like to thank everyone who supported the raffle and we hope the winners enjoy what will surely be cracking matches. 24.02.17 Killarney Advertiser

THERE was a great turnout in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday for the U10 Blitz hosted by St Paul's. There were some very exciting games and all participating teams performed very admirably with great heart and determination. Special thanks to all supporters, coaches, referees, table officials, volunteers, Killarney Sports Centre, Siobhan Collins in KABB for arranging the fixtures and the two travelling teams Kenmare Kestrels and Cougars. St Paul’s U16 boys travelled to Tralee and came away with a comprehensive victory on a score line of 53-16. St Paul’s started quickly, applying a full court press from the start which led to a number of steals and some easy transition basket. Brian Oukate once again led the scoring on 16 points. He also played great defensively and grabbed a number of outstanding rebounds. He was well assisted by Ryan O' Grady 10, Jack Corridan 10, Daniel Carroll 6, William O'Brien 5, Jamie O'Sullivan 4 and Asti Neucuvicus 2. Eoin Benson did a great job running the team and played outstanding defensive, pressurising the ball constantly. Gavin O'Regan also contributed with some great steals and some super defensive and offensive rebounds. This game allowed a lot of the younger members of the squad the opportunity to get some good quality playing time. St Paul’s travel to Tralee this weekend to play in an U-16 tournament that includes opposition from England and Limerick.

MUKI Popular St Paul's Director of Coaching Muharem 'Muki' Vugdalic will depart Killarney next week and return to his native Slovenia. Muki has enjoyed a six-month stint in Killarney and was of great assistance to all club coaches and players and also made a big impact in the local schools. A former Slovenian basketball international, Muki's presence in town for the past few months helped St Paul's make very progressive steps in the promotion and development of Killarney basketball. KILLARNEY CAMOGIE CLUB NEEDS YOUR HELP

IN 2011, the Killarney Camogie Club was founded. Six years on and it is the biggest club in Kerry and growing. Last year the club had five girls on the Kerry County team and made its international debut against the San Francisco Féile team. “Looking into 2017, we are hoping to continue this trend,” said a spokeswoman for the club.

To move forward catering for age groups 6-16, the club needs additional trainers and volunteers. Previous hurling experience is not essential as internal club training will be provided. “Help us to continue and prosper by getting involved!” added the spokeswoman. SAFEGUARD SECURITY EAST KERRY SENIOR LEAGUE – ROUND 2 DIVISION 1A Dr Crokes 0-12 Currow 2-8 On Sunday last Currow took the division 2 league points, with a 2 point win away against a young Dr Crokes team in their East Kerry Senior League Division 1A game, sponsored by Frank Doran Safeguard Security. SPRING PARTY SUCCESS It was a case of standing room only as a fine crowd attended our Spring Party in the Killarney Plaza on Friday night last. While many members of long standing were in attendance what really stood out was the amount of new families that have become involved in the club. So it was a good opportunity to chat and get to know many of the people who we meet regularly in Derreen as they attend training sessions and games. Incorporated into the night were the awards to the various categories and it’s fair to say that the committee got it bang on with their selections. The recipients were Senior Ladies - Mairead O Donoghue Young Player - Peter McCarthy Junior Player - KJ Griffin Senior Player - Danny Sheahan Club Person - Paul Trant One of the many highlights of the night was the speech made by Paul Trant as he displayed a natural talent for public speaking mixing humour self deprecation modesty and some neatly delivered hop balls! It certainly was a hard act to follow - we might even give him the award again next year just to get him to speak again. Congratulations to all the winners and as previously said each and every one thoroughly deserved. We were delighted and privileged to once again have Joanne O Riordan attend one of our functions. She has become a regular at games as well and we greatly appreciate her support and look forward to her visiting Derreen in the coming season. Kudos to Social Committee main man Brian Moriarty and his team on a top class job and an absolute dinger of a series of puzzles that very few managed to crack. E.K. SUPER LEAGUE Killarney Legion 1-14 Kilcummin 2-11 This second round game in Kilcummin saw the seniors show admirable resilience as they fought their way back from a 7 deficit with 15 mins to go to earn a share of the spoils. While both sides were guilty of some handling errors none the less they couldn’t be faulted for effort as the game was closely contested throughout. Indeed the home side seemed to have opened a winning margin but the Legion introduced Conor Keane and Ciarán Lyne and the effect was immediate with Keane brought down in the square with his first touch of possession. The same player cooly sent Brendan Kiely the wrong way

and the comeback was on. Jamie O Sullivan was vital to the Legion’s cause as he kicked a total of 8pts. When all is said and done though it was young goalkeeper Conor McCarthy who really stood out with some tremendous saves and pinpoint long distance kickouts which directly resulted in scores. So a good test which saw a positive response from this very young Legion side with plenty more to come.
