Flying doctor service touches down in Killarney

EDITOR'S VIEW Killarney focuses on saving lives THE driving rain failed to deter the “flying doctors” from fulfilling their promise to visit Killarney as they swooped into town and alighted on the hallowed turf of Fitzgerald Stadium in their brand-new air ambulance yesterday. The team of medics braved the elements to showcase to Killarney the huge role such an airborne “intensive care” unit can play in saving lives. It is planned that the vital Helicopter Medical Emergency Service will come onstream later this year and communities are urged to lend their support to making it possible.

Meanwhile, Glenflesk will be turning the spotlight this weekend on helping patients availing of cancer treatment via the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus. All are welcome to support the first of the Run for the Bus fundraisers, which takes place at Glenflesk GAA pitch on Sunday; see our story on page 42. Finally, Killarney had its say loud and proud last night (Thursday) at a public consultation meeting on the future of the Aras Phádraig building. See our story on page 12. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

DESPITE the whirling wind and driving rain, all eyes were trained on the skies over Killarney yesterday as the Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA) arrived in town. The signature red craft touched down in Fitzgerald Stadium a 10.30am as part of a 10-day promotion organised by the ICAA as it introduces its Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), a vital life-saving air support service to Munster and south Leinster, which takes off later this year. The HEMS helicopter is a mobile intensive care unit staffed by a team of highly qualified and specially trained trauma doctors who can be on site in the fastest time possible providing life-saving treatment at the incident site. The Irish Community Air Ambulance service, which will be based out of Cork Airport, will mirror successful models across Europe. It is hoped that more than €1million can be raised to launch the service in 2017. Irish Community Air Ambulance will complement the existing emergency services. John Kearney, co-founder of Irish Community Air Ambulance, said: “People are dying unnecessarily due to the time it takes to receive critical care. This new service will be built on the already successful model of Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) which has been in existence since 2009 and uses volunteer doctors for pre-hospital emergencies.” The service will offer a mobile intensive care unit by air which will allow the air ambulance to safely transport patients faster to a major hospital, saving time and lives. “This is a service for the Munster and south Leinster, and we need the support of the people to donate, fundraise or volunteer for us,” said John. Check out the website http://communityairambulance.ie/. “We have a wide range of fundraising ideas and are happy to support them,” added John. “If you’d like to help us lift off please text FLIGHT to 50300 to donate €4 to the Irish Community Air Ambulance.”

Gardaí release CCTV footage in Killarney jewellery heist probe USING CCTV footage, Gardaí have made a renewed appeal for information that could help an investigation into the theft of an estimated €3,000 worth of jewellery from a business in Killarney town centre. The footage was released in a televised appeal in Crime Call on RTÉ One on Monday evening in a bid to identify the two people wanted for questioning in relation to the August 25 theft. Gardaí have released CCTV footage of a man and a woman. It is believed from the footage that a tray of Claddagh rings was lifted from the counter and concealed before being taken from the shop. Gardaí have not excluded the possibility that those responsible may have since left the country. “The two people in the CCTV footage were not concerned about concealing their identity,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told Killarney Advertiser. Gardaí have appealed to anybody who can help in the investigation to contact them on 064-6631222.

TechTalk with Chris Reina BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP Chris Reina has some advice on backing up your data Question I heard that the minimum wage has increased to €9.25 an hour. My employer says that this only applies to adults and that, as I am under 18, he won’t be increasing my hourly rate of pay. Is that right? Answer No. Since 1 January 2017, the statutory minimum wage for an experienced adult has increased to €9.25 per hour. Under the National Minimum Wage Act 2000, there are also pro-rata increases for those aged under 18 and for trainees. The new rates are as follows: Minimum hourly rate Experienced adult worker*

*You can find a definition of an experienced adult worker in this list of frequently asked questions on the national minimum wage. https://www.workplacerelations.ie/en/ Frequently_Asked_Questions/National_Minimum_Wage/ If your employer is not paying you the appropriate minimum wage, you can make a complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) using the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie. In the complaint form you have two options. You may either request an inspector from the WRC to investigate a claim that the national minimum wage is not being paid or you may refer a dispute to a WRC adjudicator. However, you can only refer a dispute if you have requested a statement from your employer outlining the calculation of the average hourly pay. You can get more information on the minimum wage and your employment rights from the WRC Information and Customer Service (Lo-call 1890 80 80 90 or workplacerelations. ie) or from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Welcome this edition of TechTalk. Every few weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email: chris@teachtech.support with suggestions. This week we’ll explore what is probably the most important thing to do for your computer – backup! Whatever your favourite flavour of machine – Apple or PC – computer hardware comes and goes. When a machine crashes (and they do!) it may be very inconvenient and cost money – but your data is irreplaceable. Can you re-create those pictures of your children, tax-returns, emails, contacts and more? Would you want to? External hard drives are very cheap these days. A quick look at retail outlets will show you can get a 1TB drive for as little as €59 and a whopping

THE Killarney Spanish-English Conversation Exchange will host its first meeting in Killarney Library, on Thursday, February 9, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. All are welcome. 5TB drive for €179. At these prices – there is no excuse. Do it. Do it now! The process of backing up can vary on machine and operating system type, but usually plugging it in and simply drag-and-dropping files across will work nicely. Different software can automate the process greatly so it can be hands-off and you can sleep soundly knowing your data is safe. For the Mac – Time Machine is free, built-in and a good choice. For the PC, you can’t go wrong with the $20 Bvckup 2 (not a spelling error!) - it’s reliable, fast and easy to use. For business use - Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) for the Mac is an industry standard and Bvckup 2 has a Professional License as well.

Sweet slice of history offered for lease in Killarney

ITS window display has been the stuff of dreams for generations of children and in recent years Reidy’s of Main Street has also featured in innumerable wedding photographs. Reidy’s shopfront was also the backdrop for the picture here by award-winning photographer Valerie O’Sullivan in the lead-up to last year’s St Patrick’s Festival celebrations. Now the prime commercial retail unit – and sweet slice of Killarney’s history – has come up for lease. The property’s eye-catching old-world shop front complete with jars of sweets has always been a hit with locals and visitors alike and the building is now tempting national retail chains who are among many commercial interests vying for the €40,000 per annum leasehold on Number 5 Main Street. Reidy’s, which is located directly opposite TK Maxx, has six-metre frontage, with large double window display, available on a three to five year lease. “This is the ideal opportunity to locate a business on Killarney’s busiest street,” said Michael Coghlan of Sherry Fitzgerald Coghlan who is handling applications for the leasehold. The property’s internal dimensions are 54 square metres/585 square feet. As it is a listed building, strict conditions govern the interior and exterior. The owner, Michael Sheehan, has retired. Minister Coveney visits Kerry to promote house building

THE Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Simon Coveney, was in Kerry on Monday to promote the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness, which was launched in July last year. Backed by funding of €5.55 billion, Rebuilding Ireland is designed to significantly increase the supply of social housing by 47,000, double the output of overall housing to at least 25,000 homes per annum by 2021, service all tenure types (social, private and rental), and tackle homelessness comprehensively. Minister Coveney first met with Kerry Mayor Cllr Michael O’Shea, party leaders, and the Chairs of Kerry Council Council’s Strategic Policy Committees at a breakfast meeting in County Buildings, Tralee, where a range of issues will be discussed. The event in the Manor West Hotel, Tralee, saw key stakeholders, responsible for housing provision in Kerry, gathered for an overview of the issue and included a presentation from Moira Murrell, chief executive, Kerry County Council. Central to Minister Coveney’s visit was the announcement that the construction of 15 new homes will commence shortly, at a cost of €3.7 million, un-

Kerry County Council expects to be on-site in March. “Regeneration programmes like this achieve results because they develop an area holistically. Without developing the social and economic support for the residents, our efforts to upgrade the bricks and mortar are in vain,” said Minister Coveney.

GARDAÍ have alerted local communities to beware of thefts, with a spate of six burglaries taking place in the Killorglin/Mid Kerry area at the weekend. Five burglaries occurred on Saturday evening and night. The residences were unoccupied and a quantity of cash and jewellery was taken in the raids. A burglary also occurred at a residence in Lahard, Beaufort over the weekend. It is believed the thieves struck between 4pm on Friday, January 20, and 6pm on Monday, January 23. Gardaí believe all the burglaries could be linked. “If you have any information that will help, for instance any unusual activity on Saturday evening and Saturday night or noticed any unusual movements of cars or people or had any suspicious callers, get in touch with Gardaí,” said Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí. Donal and Elaine to take centre stage in Killarney ONE of Kerry's most talented thespians and an internationally renowned singer are to join forces for a special night of entertainment on February 3 to help raise funds for Raheen National School as well as to purchase a defibrillator for the local community. Actor Donal Courtney will give a performance of God Has No Country, his one-man show on the life of Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, while former Lord of the Dance lead singer and TV voice coach Elaine Canning will also perform on the night. The one-off fundraiser will be held at the Celtic Steps Arena, located at Killarney Racecourse, and tickets are already on sale at just €10. Raheen National School holds a number of annual fundraisers and this year want to go one step further and hope to install a defibrillator in the local school that will be available for all of the local community. The 42-pupil school is thriving and is one of the many progressive schools in East Kerry. But like so many primary schools, it is dependent on school

staff, parents council and the local community to help fundraise every year so that children get to benefit from the many school services made available. God Has No Courtney is a powerful telling of O'Flaherty's story and his exploits in Rome during World War 11. Elaine Canning has performed at venues all over the world, including Croke Park on All-Ireland Final day where she was the first female soloist to sing the National Anthem in front of over 80,000. She has also featured as the Vocal Expert on TG4 Junior Eurovision Song Contest and as Vocal Coach on The Voice Of Ireland. Joining Elaine on the night will be the Glenflesk Male Choir, the Raheen School Choir and the Clonkeen Teen Choir. Tickets for the event, which starts at 8pm, are just €10 and are on sale at numerous outlets or by calling 087-2339725.

School of Music is offering a unique opportunity for teachers of preschool and infant classes to explore how to bring more music into the classroom in a fun, creative, and educational way. Under the guidance of Ruti Lachs, teachers can learn how to work musically with their groups, focussing on rhythm: body percussion and small instruments; songs: action songs and subject-specific songs; music appreciation: listening and responding to music; composing: using voice and simple instruments to create new music. During the training, other benefits of music activities will be discussed, including turn-taking; socialising and interaction; creativity; whole group dynamic; counting, spelling, and using new words. No music or singing experience is needed to take part in this training. Parents who wish to gain ideas about how to introduce their child to music are also welcome to attend. There will be two evening workshops of two hours each, and trainees attend both sessions. The facilitator, Ruti Lachs, MA, is an experienced musician, piano teacher, and early years music educator. She has presented her research on the benefits of early years music education at the Society of Music Education conference in 2013 and 2014. She also has a critically acclaimed CD of original songs for children, Stomping In The Woods, which has been used in preschools and schools across Ireland and abroad. Tributes paid as Killarney says goodbye to centenarian Mollie

Mollie Breen photographed by her nephew, John O’Sullivan.

KILLARNEY is saying farewell this week to the last of a generation as popular Killarney lady and centenarian Mollie Breen passed away on Tuesday evening.

Mollie, of Countess Road, was over 103 years of age and would have marked her 104th birthday in August. She is survived by her nieces, nephews, grand nephews,

grand nieces, great grand nephews, great grand nieces, other relatives, neighbours and many dear friends and the staff and residents at Killarney Nursing Home. Mollie never had any shortage of help when it came to blowing out the candles on her birthday cakes, most notably on Sunday, August 11, 2013, when a Mass and birthday party in The Dromhall Hotel were organised in honour of her landmark 100th birthday. Among those congratulating Mollie on that day was Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne. A keen bridge player, Mollie will be missed by all her friends from the card-tables as well as members of Killarney Active Retirement Association. “Mollie had a very long and very enjoyable life,” her nephew John O’Sullivan said. “She had many friends and was a very outgoing woman who loved being out and about and seeing people being happy.”

Mollie (nee O’Sullivan) was born in Ballyledder, Beaufort, in 1913 and was one of seven children. She worked in Kennelly’s shop in Killorglin for several years and it was in Killorglin that she met her future husband, Jerh Breen, also from Beaufort. The couple married in 1940 and together ran two jewellery shops in Killarney, with the first on Plunkett Street and the other on Main Street. Mollie and Jerh retired in the early 1990s and the Main Street shop was run by John and Kathleen O’Shea until 2011. Mollie and Jerh, who died in May 1993, were keen racegoers and Jerh would have been a familiar sight to many as the Killarney racecourse where he used to erect the clock for many years during the race meets. The Requiem Mass will take place in St Mary’s Cathedral today, Friday morning, at 10.30am.

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club tees up for success THERE were celebrations for Killarney Golf & Fishing Club during the week as its Killeen course was awarded the Best Parkland in Munster at the 2017 Golfer’s Guide to Ireland Awards. The results were announced last Tuesday at a function held in Carton House Hotel, Co Kildare. The award echoes Killeen’s recent climb in the Irish Top 100 which now sees the four-time European Tour venue climb inside the top 10 parkland layouts in the country. Incidentally, Mahony’s Point also improved by four places in the year’s rankings and these improvements are in recognition of the investment in both courses over the past three years. The function was attended by over 100 golf club and golf sector interests. Guest of honour Bernard Durkan TD presented the awards which recognise leadership roles played by individual Irish golf clubs and associated Irish golf interests, both North and South. These included awards for best parklands and links, golf club managers, hidden gems, golf resorts and hotels and restaurants specialising in golf travel and tourism. Each of the winners received a specially commissioned trophy in recognition of their achievement. All awards were won on the basis of an All-Ireland poll undertaken from within the golf and golf related business community.

Bernard Durkan TD, Aoife Nolan, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, Ger Humphreys, Tipperary Crystal, Cormac Flannery, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, and Paddy McCarthy, Golfer’s Guide to Ireland.

AFTER a third sensational West End season, Dirty Dancing will mambo its way to the INEC, Killarney, from February 28 to March 4. Producers Karl Sydow and Paul Elliott are delighted to announce that the new UK production of Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story Onstage enjoyed a sensational Christmas season, so don’t be left in the corner and book your tickets now. Starring Lewis Griffiths as ‘Johnny Castle’, Katie Hartland as ‘Baby Houseman’ and Carlie Milner as ‘Penny Johnson’, the story of Baby

and Johnny, featuring the hit songs ‘Hungry Eyes’, ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Do You Love Me?’ and the heartstopping ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’, comes to the INEC, following two blockbuster West End runs, two hit UK tours, and various international productions. It’s the summer of 1963, and 17-year-old Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is about to learn some major lessons in life as well as a thing or two about dancing. On holiday in New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister and parents, she stumbles across an all-night dance party at the

staff quarters. Mesmerised by the raunchy dance moves, Baby can’t wait to be part of the scene, especially when she catches sight of Johnny Castle, the resort dance instructor. Her life is about to change forever as she is thrown in at the deep end as Johnny’s leading lady both onstage and off. The Saturday night show, March 4, is sold out and there is only limited availability for the Friday, March 3, performance. Tickets are available from the INEC Box Office on 064-6671555, www.inec.ie or from Ticketmaster.

Killarney Celtic awarded Aviva’s Performance of the Round THE Killarney Celtic club has been chosen as Aviva’s Performance of the Round from Round Six of the FAI Junior Cup. The FAI Junior Cup sponsors Aviva chose Killarney Celtic following their impressive 3-2 victory over last season’s quarter-finalists, Newmarket Celtic. The Kerry side went into the game as underdogs with Newmarket the dominant side in Clare and were unlucky to be knocked out of the FAI Junior Cup by Janesboro at the quarter-final stage

KERRY and Rathmore footballer Aidan O’Mahony was praised by judges for his theatrics and acting prowess on last Sunday’s Dancing with the Stars. Aidan and his partner Valeria Milova stepped through a wardrobe Narnia-style to take on a ballroom classic, the quickstep, to ‘Little Talks’ by Of Monsters and Men.

Judge Julian Benson told him: “There were no monsters but theatrics…..next week bring it up the tempo.” The duo scored 16. And finally with the votes counted and added to the judges scores the first to leave the competition was reality TV star Hughie Maughan and Emily Barker.

last year. Being the away side did not faze Killarney and Eoghan Donnellan’s side responded to going a goal down in Clare with a Wayne Sparling double to give them a half time lead. However they were pegged back on the hour mark but as the game was heading for extra time Killarney’s Chris O’Reilly popped up to nod his side into the last 16. This was the standout performance in Round Six of the FAI Junior Cup.

Welcome

T

o the first Home & Living for 2017. This month we are looking at all the lovely trends for the new year. If like me you’re a fan of grey you’ll be thrilled to hear it’s still our go-to neutral for 2017, mixing in bolder accent colours and lots of texture. Pantone’s colour of the year is Greenery, which is quite a bright green — only for the brave! But don’t panic: Any green will suffice to keep you on trend. Always remember though Coco Chanel’s famous quote: “le mode passe; le style reste”, loosely translated as “fashion passes; style remains”, so pick and choose from the trends to suit your home and your style. My top picks this month have to be the beanbag from Hal-Lou I am revamping my boys’ bedroom this year and this amazing beanbag unzips into a double mattress perfect for sleepovers. I’ve always been a fan of velvet as it’s a great-wearing fabric, so it’s great to see it everywhere this year and in such wonderful colours. Wishing you a great 2017 and happy decorating.

Yours in decorating,

Filled with cloud-like memory foam, it unfolds around your body, supporting your frame and allowing you to sink into a ball of blissful squashy loveliness. What makes this beanbag so special is the the fact that the inner filling is contained in a bag which can be easily transformed into a very comfy memory foam filled mattress. The Cremur team give us their trends for 2017 GAS IS BACK - A gas log fireplace creates a ‘mess free’ centrepiece for your home while still providing a good level of heat and the visual ambience of a wood burning fire.

The advantages of a gas fireplace: • Convenience - entertaining is easy because your fireplace will work when you want it to, without having to store, stack or chop wood. • Functionality – provides instant heat. With the ease of pressing a button or turning a knob, you have a beautiful flame. • Design flexibility - most units have a ‘zero clearance’ around them so you have more options for surrounding wall finishes including tiles, stone, paint or wallpaper. • Reliability – ability to function in the event of a power cut.

If you think a gas fire is for you call the Cremur on 066 7124555 to book your appointment.

• Thermostatically controlled heat from a reliable source. Be it 6am or 10pm, you can just flick it on and get results. • Natural gas is a good option if directly available to the home. • Gas heaters produce approximately one third of greenhouse gas emissions of standard electric heaters. • A gas log fire has the look of a wood fire without the disadvantages. • They come with energy labels to help you choose the most efficient models. • Cleaner than wood or coal. • Extremely low running costs.

1. Shades of grey We are all still rocking grey as our favourite neutral, and it’s not going anywhere soon. This year’s trend in grey tends to be a bit smokey and earthy, as seen in Little Greene “Woodash” and “Dash of Soot,” available from Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets.

2. Texture

Think fur cushions, rich velvet, soft mohair, strokeable textures.

5. Hygge

A feeling or mood taking pleasure in making ordinary everyday moments more meaningful, beautiful or special. A nice cup for your tea, a rug for your legs or a candle for dinner – small things can change how you feel. Fur throwfrom Corcoran's Furniture & Carpets.

TOP TEN TRENDS for the year ahead

Midnight blue, petrol blue and indigo and ink colours are a big trend we love. Check out this fabulous loveseat from Hal-Lou.

3. The Grand Tour No, not the car show! The interiors world is doing its own version, from historical explorers and naturalists with vintage globes and hints of botany in the form of paint drawings and butterfly motifs. These work in a traditional interior but also in the modern interior adding a touch of the eclectic traveller. Check out these Botanical Butterfly Embroidered cushion available to order from Marks & Spencer, Killarney.

6. Green The Pantone colour for 2017 is Greenery Pantone 15-0343. It is symbolic of new beginn ings and it is also nature’s neutral. 3 seater green Chaise available from Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets, on sale at €699.

4. Singing the blues

7. Handmade Anything made with love – printed, glazed, knitted, it’s all in if it’s handmade. Feeling connected to the craftsperson is a big thing this year.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

In these troubled times I WANTED to let my fellow readers know about a booklet I found to be amazing. It is called Is there a Creator that Cares About You? and you can get it free of charge at Watchtower, Newcastle, Greystones, Co Wicklow. Below is an extract from a poem I wrote: Dear Jesus, Help me on my way, in these troubled times, amidst the chaos and strife, I hear the sweetest chimes, But I know you’ll see me through, Because you know I believe in you. Some people never see the light until the day they die But thanks to you Jesus I have been released, and never tell a lie Keep me safe and warm in these troubled times War, famine, violence, jealousy, yes, jealousy The most wicked of all crimes Late at night as I go to bed and turn out the light I know you are by my side with all Your power and might. Donie Ferris, “Donie the Pony” Gap of Dunloe, Killarney

CALL FOR IMMEDIATE USE OF DEER LODGE AT THE December 2016 meeting of Kerry County Council, I called as a matter of great urgency on the Health Service Executive and the Minister for Health to open for immediate use the fairly recently built Deer Lodge 40-bed residential unit in Killarney. Recent years have seen the development of a

new and more modern approach to dealing with psychiatric illness. There has been a welcome emphasis on developing purpose-built residences. Deer Lodge is such a building and it is designed to ensure that residents will at all times have proper and dignified care. At present the clients

are in a building that is no longer regarded as fit for purpose particularly when a state of the art building lies idle and waiting. The motion received the unanimous support of the council members. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

Councillor Michael Gleeson.

Homer for President LAST night I had a dream in bed; no - it was really a nightmare, Homer Simpson could take no more; the man was in despair. He feared the way America was going, so he decided on the spot, That he would run for President, and try to stop the rot. He got the nod from Springfield, and all the guys in Moes, Both Bart and Liza backed him, but Marge was not so sure. Why do you want to be President? she asked him one night in bed, Because I love America; I want to

make it great again. Homer travelled east and west, making speeches everywhere, The plain folk all adored him, even though he had no hair. Presidents need a golden thatch, Moe’s PR folk advised, So Homer spent a fortune on a cornflakes wig the size Of a Chihuahua, that his detractors all despised. They said he was a phoney, that he had no style or class, But Homer lacerated them for talking through their ass.

The literati of the USA all laughed at this clown Simpson, But Homer was undaunted; he knew that he could take them, For Moe’s people were all on his side; the blue collars of the nation. Homer ran a cheap campaign, with insults, and no regrets, And in the end the people spoke; he became the President! Nicky Barry, Woodlawn Park, Killarney

BY EVE KELLIHER

C

OLLEGE sweethearts Claire O’Sullivan and Niall O’Mahony tied the knot in Killarney recently. Claire, form Tralee, and Killarney native Niall were wed in St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney, by Fr Joe Begley, and held their reception in The Malton Hotel. Photographer Padraig Healy captured the big day on camera including a photo-shoot at Killarney Railway Station. Helping them celebrate were both sets of parents, Brigid and John O’Sullivan and Bridie and Neil O’Mahony. The bride’s brother Brian O’Sullivan and his girlfriend Rebecca Driscoll and Claire’s sister Laura O’Sullivan (maid of honour) were the other immediate family members present. Claire’s friends Lorraine Counihan and Catriona Maloney were her bridesmaids while Niall’s friends also lent their support, with Hugh O’Donoghue as best man and Mike O’Donoghue and Andrew Garnett as groomsmen. Claire and Niall are both primary school teachers, with Claire working at St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen, and Niall in Kilcummin National School. Their paths first crossed when they were attending Mary Immaculate College. “We got engaged in Dromoland Castle on May 29, 2015,” said Claire. “A surprise trip to New York followed for ring shopping.” Patrice O’Connor and Morgan Pierce provided the church music and at the reception Truly Diverse and DJ Niall “Botty” O’Callaghan entertained into the small hours. “Truly Diverse were amazing and ensured the dance floor was full at all times, and Botty made sure it remained so well into the early hours,” said the bride. Talented Killarney makeup artist Marilyn McSweeney created the bride and her party’s makeup looks and a childhood neighbour of Claire’s, Tina Goodall of Aspire Hair Salon, Tralee, took care of the bridal hairstyling, The newlyweds, who will reside in Killarney, honeymooned in Australia for three weeks.

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Bishop launches Catholic Schools Week

THE Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne was launched Catholic Schools Week during a visit to Faha National School, with a prayer service reflecting this year’s theme – Care for our Common Home. Students with the help of their teachers prepared artwork, songs and prayers. The school demonstrated it warm welcoming atmosphere and its central Catholic ethos through a beautifully presented and illustrated prayer service. Excerpts from the service will be aired on Horizons Sunday, January 29, at 9am on Radio Kerry and can also be listened to on the Diocesan website: dioceseofkerry.ie. Faha School is situated in the parish of Milltown/Listry and the school is four miles from the village of Milltown. Bishop Ray Browne addressed second class to sixth class students of the school saying: “We are concerned about climate change, pollution, and creatures becoming extinct. We have one big home and we must look after the home and every family member. We want every person to have a good life to be happy and fulfilled. “This is Catholic Schools Week and our schools are very good and do good work. This is acknowledged by the array of flags outside the schools, demonstrating your commitment to Green Schools, recycling, conservation and your care for creation. “The schooling of the person involves the school the parents and the local community. Parents are the primary educators.” Catholic Schools Week takes place from January 29 to February 4 and special educational resources have been prepared to support students and teachers at primary and at post-primary level. A dedicated Facebook page called ‘Catholic Schools Week’ shares resources and information about local events around the country and it offers useful analysis on Catholic education.

Gathering of Bridies, Biddies and Bridgets to be a highlight of new Kerry festival IS YOUR name Bridget, Breda or Bridie or any variation of the name Brigid? If so, you are invited to a unique gathering in Killorglin that will be one of many highlights of the town’s newest festival. The “Meeting of the Brigid’s” will take place from 8pm till late in Falvey’s Bar, Killorglin, on Saturday, February 4, a day that has been earmarked for a brand-new yet timeold celebration for the town. St Brigid’s Day or Imbolg is an ancient Irish tradition that has been marked for hundreds of years in Mid Kerry. This was once part of the four ancient Celtic festivals along with Lá Bealtaine, Lughnasa and Samhain. Now, on Saturday, February 4, Killorglin will host a unique festival, called Biddy’s Day, celebrating

the custom. “The Biddy is honoured every year in the Mid Kerry region, with Biddy groups visiting rural houses and public houses, carrying a ‘Brideog’ (effigy) with them, to ensure evil spirits are kept away from humans and animals alike for the coming year,” said local historian Thomas O’Sullivan, who is one of the organisers of the new festival. All are welcome to the Biddy’s parade in Killorglin on February 4, which will take place from the Fishery to Library Place at 7pm. “Various local Biddy groups will be wearing their traditional costumes and join us on our way up to Library Place,” said Thomas.

This is just one aspect of a full programme of events that will unfold on February 4, including Biddy’s hat and St Brigid’s Cross making workshop in Boyle’s old Hardware store (11am to 12pm), followed by set dancing and storytelling as well as bodhrán lessons throughout the day. Finnegan’s Wake is the title of a drama event will take place in the Fishery pub at 5pm. Meanwhile, if you are interested in the history of the tradition, on Friday evening, February 3, a talk will take place from 8pm to 9pm in the small theatre at the CYMS building, called The Celebration of Brigid: Celtic Goddess and Saint.

Is this the most dangerous junction in Ireland? Eve Kelliher reports on concerns surrounding the junction from Upper Lewis Road on to the Killarney by-pass

The road leading to Kilcummin is on extreme right. Also on right in foreground is the land near the by-pass road and Kilcummin road with overgrown bushes and trees. Lewis Road junction, entrance to Bridgefield estate and the railway track are also visible.

DESCRIBED as “one of the most dangerous junctions in Ireland”, the Lewis Road/Killarney bypass junction is an accident black spot. It has been the subject of numerous urgent discussions by local politicians and Kerry County Council alike, in their quest for solutions to the crux from Transport Infrastructure Ireland, formerly the National Roads Authority. And while local officials have constantly raised the issue in recent years, it would seem it is only Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that has the power to green light remedial action. “I have come across literally dozens of accidents there,” said Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae. “But there are ways and means of making it safe.” The Independent TD noted that the junction was nothing short of “chaotic”. “It is an accident black spot and is one of the locations with the highest incidents of accidents we have in the area,” he said. This is a sentiment echoed by the chairman of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Cronin. “This is a lethally dangerous junction, which has caused a huge number of traffic accidents and fatalities over the years,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “But Transport Infrastructure Ireland has ignored all our pleas to take steps to alleviate the situation.” The junction was badly designed

from the outset, added Killarney’s first citizen. “There are no two ways about it; it is a flawed junction,” he said. “If you are coming from Lewis Road and turning right, you are crossing three lanes. And the sad reality is the maximum speed limit applies.” But he feels there are options to remedy the situation. These would include the temporary solution of the addition of a slip road to the left, which is an idea also suggested by his fellow Killarney Municipal District councillor Cllr Donal Grady. Other options are a roundabout or a different layout, added Cllr Cronin. Councillor Donal Grady, in his days working with the Killarney Fire Service, said he had witnessed at first-hand the tragic results of numerous accidents at the black spot. “I have had at least seven motions before the council on the issue in recent years on it and I felt so frustrated I said at one stage we should build a wall across the area and let no one use it,” said Cllr Grady. “When I was working with the fire service I attended one tragic accident in which a woman had died in a crash there.” He added: “It must be the most dangerous junction in Ireland, yet we are not allowed to put a roundabout there. It shouldn’t be allowed to continue.”

Could unused land on both sides of bypass offer a solution? ROUNDABOUTS and relief roads have been mooted by frequent users of the bypass and residents of the area as potential solutions to the danger junction. Others have suggested a “leftonly” turn at the top of Lewis Road as a way of evading the peril that faces everyone who makes their way on to the bypass.

But one local resident and frequent user of the road felt the “left only” turn is definitely not the answer. “There is plenty of unused land on both sides of the bypass road that could provide a solution to this problem,” stated the resident. “Maybe a roundabout could be built that can link both junctions or a relief road can be built running

under the by-pass and linking the Bridgefield entrance with the Kilcummin road. It's a matter for the engineers, county council, Irish Rail and Transport Infrastructure Ireland and also a funding issue but it's definitely worth exploring.” Pedestrians also face constant danger when they walk the route. “Some of those living in the

area have discussed the idea of opening a walkway parallel to the railway track. This would run under the bypass bridge and under the Bridgefield estate entrance,” added the local resident. All of this sounds good, but is there enough space to create such a walkway and a relief road or slip road also?

Scenes from some of the many traffic accidents at the notorious blackspot on the Killarney by-pass road.

A close up and more detailed view of the problem area. Both junctions are visible here. The junction and road leading to Kilcummin is on left in background. The road loops around the land that surrounds the by-pass road and Kilcummin junction. It is a quite sizeable section of land with overgrown bushes and trees that could help to provide a solution to traffic problems in the area. The route of the railway track is also visible running under the road and bridges. The Lewis Road junction is on the right. The small bridge entrance to Bridgefield estate is also visible on right.

The Provocateur GIVE PEOPLE PRIDE OF PLACE AND WATCH A COMMUNITY BLOSSOM AFTER reading the articles in the Killarney Advertiser over the past two weeks with regards the National Park, there’s one question I can’t help but ask, “Why are we looking for money, when we have the population to carry out this work?” Who, you may ask? Firstly, there are many volunteers who take great pride in preserving the National Park, but from speaking with locals they say, “We want to help, we just don’t know how.” There needs to be more opportunity for the average citizen to help; educate people about the small part they can play within the community by running a workshop in businesses within the locality so everybody knows how and where they can contribute. An even greater population which can be utilised are the people drawing the social welfare. If we were to utilise these people so that they could all contribute four hours of their day, we would have the workforce needed to restore the National Park (and the surrounding areas) to its natural beauty. They are being paid the €180 so they will be earning the minimum wage like most other workers. Unlike the Back to Work scheme, it will be a set amount of hours to work alongside the minimum wage, i.e. for those only earning €100, they will do fewer hours. It would bring together people of all cultures and nationalities to work alongside each other to make our town a better place. Of course, there are the groups which need to be taken into account who can’t contribute to this, such as single mothers with young children and people on disability, but for those who are fit, healthy and capable why can’t they be mobilised to contribute to society? Where is the issue? We don’t need more money, we are already giving it to people who can help achieve the things we talk about. It’s in our hands. Give the people their pride of place in society and watch a community blossom. VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

EXPLORING THE PLACEBO EFFECT The placebo effect has to be one of the strangest phenomenon known to science, says Trevor O’Donoghue A MEASURABLE effect that is produced by a placebo pill or treatment that has been designed not to have any effect, the placebo is often used in scientific experiments to measure the effect of a specific medicine or treatment. A placebo can be for example a sugar pill or an injection of salted water, or fake surgical procedure, all of which are designed have no effect on the patient and so can be compared to the medicine or treatment being tested. The problem, however, is that even a sugar pill or fake treatment can elicit a genuine response in the patient. Since the pill or treatment hasn’t been designed to produce the effect, then any effect being reported must be down to the patient. Sometimes it is the expectation of a benefit that leads to the effect. The patient thinks that he or she should feel better after taking the pill or treatment and sometimes genuinely does feel better and so reports that they do. This has been shown to be the case in some instances, but the placebo effect has also been shown to produce measurable biological responses. In addition, even when the patients are aware that they are given a placebo, the placebo effect is still observed. The size

EuroMillions excitement reaches fever pitch of the placebo effect can be correlated to the perception of the invasiveness or scale of the treatment. A small pill producing a smaller response than a larger pill and so on. These responses are real and are not caused by the placebo treatment or pills. It therefore stands to reason that they must be caused by the patient. If this is the case, then the patient has triggered a biological response by using the power of suggestion alone. That’s quite a powerful idea, and one that is now being studied in numerous labs around the world. It will be interesting over the next number of years to see where, and how far this research goes, and if the relationship between our mind and thoughts can be harnessed to positive medical effect. • Feeling curious about the world around you? CAREER OPTIONS

Further training and education choices Career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan has some advice on options that are well worth exploring MANY students will have plans of attending college on completion of their Leaving Certificate and while the focus for many, particularly at this time, is to apply and secure a third-level place through the CAO system, alternative options are also available which are well worth exploring. The apprenticeship website www.apprenticeship.ie has all the current information about apprenticeships. Training for an apprenticeship involves taking part in a programme of education and training which alternates between blocks of time spent learning on the job in the workplace and learning in an education or training centre. If you are thinking along these lines log on and find out about what is available regarding

54

Killarney Advertiser 27.01.17

training and the allowances paid, the qualifications you will receive and the requirements necessary to become an apprentice. The further education sector offers a range of opportunities to students through Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses which are available in many locations throughout the country. PLC courses are full-time programmes that last for one or two years. They prepare students by giving them practical skills and qualifications to go either directly into employment or, where requirements are met, to enable progression into a range of programmes in third level education. There is a wide choice of courses available through PLC’s in areas such as Business, Computing, Sport & Leisure, Journalism, Childcare and many more. In order to apply for a place on a PLC course you must apply

directly to the college of your choice. PLC courses are completely separate from the CAO and should not be listed on a CAO form. Once you have applied the college may then invite you for interview. Each college will have their own dates for application and interviews. The full range of courses available can be found at www.qualifax.ie and further details can also be found on the individual college websites. Many of the PLC open days will be taking place over the coming weeks and months - for details of these see www.qualifax.ie •You can contact Eithne Teahan by emailing eithnetk@gmail.com or calling 087-2028185

SOME plants are sadly forgotten about during the summer – they are probably just the plain green ones in the back of the border, or the ones that are obscured by pretty summer flowers. One such plant in my garden is the Giant Pussy Willow which stands alone, beside the ditch and is innocuous all year in its dull greenery. However, in January, Salix chaenomeloides “Mt. Aso” blazes with the fluffiest, largest and most colourful catkins you can imagine. The flowers (catkins) are almost two inches long, and a bright reddish pink in colour. It is advisable to coppice these plants every few years, as it will then produce many fresh new stems – which can be cut and used in flower arranging. Hellebores are also doing exceptionally well this year, don’t be afraid to cut back old leaves in order to expose the flowers. There are a wide range of hellebores for sale, Ashwood’s double is one of my favourites, or any of the Harvington range have excel-

lent flower colours. Many hellebores can be divided in spring, but I would recommend doing it in September, I have had better results the following year. If you are a well-organised gardener you will undoubtedly be wondering what to do outside in this fine weather, as everything has been done in time. However, for most of us, this beautiful spell is when we can play catch-up! Any pruning to be done should definitely be done now, in particular beech hedges, before they come into bud. Climbers such as vines and wisterias should also be pruned now. Wisterias can be cut back to two-three buds from the main stem, to keep them in good shape. Large shrubs may be left until the end of February, but if they are very big, or causing potential harm, they may be cut back by a third, and then again later. Apple and pear trees can also be cut back. Always bear in mind that pruning stimulates growth, so make sure you prune evenly!

Rural action plan will help to revitalise Kerry, says Coghlan THE Government has launched its Action Plan for Rural Ireland and Seanad leas-cathaoirleach Paul Coghlan has said it will bring tangible benefits to people and communities in Kerry and help to revitalise the county. Ballydowney-based Senator Coghlan said: “Fine Gael in Government, is using the resources created by our strong economy to deliver real benefits to people and communities all across the country. The Government’s new Action Plan for Rural Ireland contains over 270 targeted actions that will help to deliver these benefits to people here in Kerry. “The Plan contains innovative measures to support the revitalisation of over 600 rural towns and villages across Ireland, which will see investment of up to €37 million per annum in rural development schemes such as the Town and Village renewal Scheme, the CLÁR Programme and the Rural Recreation Programme. A number of towns and villages across Kerry were badly affected by the recession of recent year and part of Fine Gael’s Action Plan will review planning legislation to allow the

change of use of vacant commercial properties in rural towns and villages, added Senator Coghlan. “There will also be a new pilot scheme to encourage increased residential occupancy in towns and villages,” he said. “Broadband is crucial to many people in rural Ireland, particularly those trying to run a business. I am pleased that the Government is allocating an initial €275 million to implement the National Broadband Plan and will be implementing the recommendations of Report of the Mobile Phone and Broadband Taskforce. Every Local Authority in the country will have a Local Digital Strategy and broadband officers to see this through.”

MEEKE AND NAGLE FAIL TO CAPITALISE ON THEIR ADVANTAGE

KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle crashed out on day one of last weekend’s World Rally Championship opener in Monte Carlo, failing to capitalise on extensive preseason testing Citroen's new generation WR car. They re-joined on Saturday under rally 2 rules (regulations that allow a driver who retires from an event to re-enter the next day at the

cost of a five-minute time penalty), only to be hit by another car on a road section between stages forcing the pair to retire immediately from the event. The eventual winner was M-Sport’s late signing, Sebastian Ogier, in the new generation Ford Fiesta WRC. He was joined on the podium by his ex-teammate Jarri Matti Latvala in a

Toyota Yaris WRC, Toyota returning to the WRC after an 18-year absence. The final step was occupied by Ogier’s current teammate Ott Tanak. Kris Meeke’s Citroen teammate Craig Breen from Waterford finished fifth overall in a 2016 generation Citroen DS3 WR car. The next round is Rally Sweden, from February 10 to 12.

Much of the time this was orchestrated by himself in order to detract attention for poor track action. A colourful side to the sport has come to an end. Other Liberty Media sweeping changes include the appointment of Ross Brawn as managing director of motorsports. Brawn is seen as one of the most successful and innovative technical directors in Formula 1 history, winning 22 World FIA Championships with Ferrari, Williams and Benetton. He went on to win the 2009 F1 World Drivers and Constructors' Championships with his own F1 team, selling that team to Mercedes in 2010 and laying the foundation that enabled the team to win the 2014, 2015 and 2016 World Titles. It will be interesting to see how this American media giant will influence F1 in coming years.

Skellig coast motors centre stage with new visitor plan WHAT can be better than a leisurely drive along the Skellig coast? Motorists should take note that Fáilte Ireland is looking to broaden the appeal of the iconic attraction that is the Skellig coast and this announced the formation of the Skellig Coast Tourism Network. The tourism authority launched this visitor experience plan for the area in a bid to increase “dwell time” in the wider surrounding region and ensure that developments along the local stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way route are compelling and motivating to international visitors. Speaking at the launch in Waterville, Orla Carroll, Director of Strategic Development at Fáilte Ireland, said: “This project is all about widening the current visitor experience from just simply being ‘a trip to Skellig Michael’ to a more immersive engagement with ‘the Skelligs experience’. This approach will generate increased visitor dwelling times and revenue as well as help increase job creation in the local area.” This plan also sets out to protect the special environmental character of the place by spreading tourist activity more evenly across the destination, according to Ms Carroll. Key to the success of the development of the Visitor Experience Plan was an extensive programme of consultations and workshops held locally between June and September last year. The plan will focus on a number of projects based on the following themes: journeys inspired by the history of the Skellig monks; the cradle of Ireland’s nationhood (centred on Daniel O’Connell’s birthplace);

a history of global connections; and where the ocean meets the sky at the edge of the world (incorporating the ‘Dark Skies’ experience). Central to the success of the plan will be the Skellig Coast Tourism Network. The network is an umbrella

organisation for the tourism, community, business and development groups that fall within the defined catchment area and will work under the chairmanship of local Caherciveen man Frank Curran.

Sunday morning dew on grass Recording steps of all who pass Across the fields from Aghadoe To Mass at Fossa far below.

You always had a smile to share, Time to give, time to care, Someone to talk to, kind and true, One in a million, that was you.

Hands from north, south, west and east Shaped this octagon of peace That people might be reconciled in a praise of aisles.

Forever remembered by your loving wife Sheila, Sons Paddy, Gary, Mike, Donie, Hugh, Daughters Nancy, Kathryn, Shelanne, Sons In Law, Daughters in Law, Grandchildren, Brother, Sister, Relatives and Friends.

Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same; All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again. A light from our household gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our home, That never can be filled. May the God of Love and Mercy, Care for our loved one who is gone, And bless with consolation, Those left to carry on. The happy hours we once enjoyed, How sweet their memory still, But death has left a vacant place, This world can never fill. How dearly we loved you, And prayed you might live, But Jesus just beckoned, And we had to give. God gave us strength to bear it, And courage to fight the blow, What it has meant to lose you, God alone will ever know. Sadly missed and never forgotten by Tomas, Stephen and Ryan. Anniversary Mass for Sheila will be on the 31st January 9.30am in the Church of the Resurrection.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH 5TH ANNIVERSARY O’SULLIVAN

In loving memory of Tim O’Sullivan late of Maughantourig Gneeveguilla, who died on 3rd of February 2012. R.I.P. We think of you in silence We often speak your name But all we have are memories And your picture in a frame Your resting place we visit Flowers we place with care But no one knows the heartache As we turn and leave you there. Sadly missed by PJ and Leo.

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. F.K.

FLASHBACK TO 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF NATIONAL CUP WIN It is exactly 20 years ago this weekend since the Kerry Spring St Paul’s under-19 team’s national cup victory, says Eamonn Keogh

TWENTY years ago this weekend, on Saturday January 25, 1997, the Kerry Spring St Paul's U-19 team enjoyed a spectacular 65-63 victory over Star of the Sea Belfast to clinch the U-19 National Cup at The National Basketball Arena in Dublin. It was the second time in three years that St Paul's enjoyed success in this competition following another victory in 1995. Star of the Sea were hot favourites for this title but the Killarney side caused a big shock in a thrilling encounter that was viewed as the most exciting game of the weekend of the Sprite National Cup series that hosted ten different fixtures. St Paul's were well in contention from the start with team captain Shane Horgan, David O'Flaherty, Paul Kennedy, Michael Clifford and David Griffin all contributing well. Star of the Sea were led by Irish International and Longford GAA player Trevor Smullen and the Belfast side led 26-20 midway through the first half. However St Paul's responded magnificently hitting 13 points without reply through Griffin, Horgan, O'Flaherty and Kennedy to lead 33-26 with five minutes left. Star hit back but St Paul's stayed in front to lead 41-37 at the interval. It was a closely contested third quarter and St Paul's enjoyed a narrow 5250 lead entering the final quarter. The outstanding David Griffin produced some magical moments on both ends of the court to keep St Paul's ahead but Smullen levelled matters at 56 points each with seven minutes remaining. The title seemed destined for Star as Smullen pushed them 61-58 in front with three minutes left but Horgan and Griffin turned it around for St Paul's to lead 62-61. Star were ahead again with 90 seconds left but a crucial basket from Clifford gave St Paul's a 64-63 lead entering the final minute. Both sides squandered opportunities in a tense and drama filled finish before Shane Horgan converted a free throw with 13 seconds left to secure a magnificent victory for St Paul's. Match MVP David Griffin led the scoring for St Paul's with 24 points followed by David O'Flaherty 16, Shane Horgan 12, Paul Kennedy 9, Micheal Clifford 4, Kenneth McCarthy, John Brosnan, Aidan McCarthy, Michael O'Mahoney, Cathal Bartlett, Colin Russell, John Griffin and Ciaran Driver. On the same weekend in 1997 on Friday, January 24, the Kerry Spring St Paul's senior men’s team were competing in the showpiece weekend of Irish Basketball before a capacity crowd at The National Basketball Arena. St Paul's featured in the first live TV semi-final against St Vincent's Dublin but it was a disappointing performance from the Killarney side losing 88-74. Aidan O’Mahony calls time on intercounty football career BY EVE KELLIHER

STALWART Kerry defender Aidan O’Mahony this week called time on his long and honours-laden intercounty career. The teak-tough Rathmore clubman, winner of five All-Ireland senior medals, made his championship debut in the green and gold in 2004 against Clare and went on to play 70 championship games for his county in a career spanning 14 years – the last of which was in the pulsating All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin back in August of last year. In addition he played 85 League games for the county. O’Mahony endeared himself to the Kingdom’s supporters through his total commitment to the green and gold jersey and will be another familiar face missing when Kerry commence the new season in earnest in two weeks’ time. On Monday he stated: “Today I would like to announce my retirement. I feel the time is now appropriate for me to step away from the Kerry team. “It’s been an absolute honour for me to wear the green and gold jersey for Kerry for the past 14 years at senior level and I leave having great respect for all the talented players I have shared my footballing career with.” He paid tribute to his teammates and added: “I have been incredibly fortunate to represent my club (Rathmore), county, province and country over the years. It was an honour to share the dressing room with such brilliant players throughout the last 14 years with Kerry.” He thanked all the managers he had worked with, from his minor and under-21 days to senior level, as well as all the Kerry supporters and his employer, An Garda Siochána. “Finally, I would like to thank my family for their encouragement and ongoing support over the years,” he said.

‘He led by example and was a driving force on pitch’ KERRY team manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice paid tribute to Aidan O’Mahony saying he “gave everything he had to the cause over a career that stretches back to the 2003 season when he was first brought into the squad by Paidi (Ó Sé)”. Aidan was, added the Kerry team boss, “ferociously proud” of representing Kerry. “When Jack (O’Connor) took over in 2004 Aidan got his opportunity early in the League and he did not leave go of that jersey afterwards,” said Eamonn. O’Mahony ended up winning the first of five All-Ireland medals the following September. “He has won it all in terms of individual and collective honours,” said the Kerry manager, adding: “He led by example and was a driving force in the gym and on the pitch.” The Kerry boss added: “Aidan was a warrior for Kerry right up until the last minute of his last game for Kerry last August.” The chairman of the Kerry County Committee, Tim Murphy, described Aidan as “an uncompromising defender whose performances on the field of play rallied both team mates and supporters alike”. Former Kerry manager Jack O’Connor added: “He was teak tough and fearless. The tougher it was, the better he liked it.”

Rathmore says thanks for the memories THE chairman of Rathmore GAA Club congratulated Aidan O’Mahony and thanked him for all he achieved. Donal Murphy noted how Aidan had always “remained absolutely loyal to his club”. “He always brought the same drive and intensity to

Rathmore games that were his hallmark in the inter-county scene,” he said. Donal described him as “a superb leader on and off the pitch” adding: “We wish himself and Denise all the best in the future, and we hope to see him donning the red

and white of Rathmore for a good while yet. Thanks for the memories, Aidan.” Rathmore man and Kerry County Council member Cllr Niall Kelleher added: “As a Rathmore man I am extremely proud of Aidan's achievements at both club and county level."

How Aidan made one young fan’s day MOMENTS after Kerry’s 2014 All-Ireland victory, Aidan O’Mahony made one young fan’s day when he presented his boots to Diarmaid De Bhillis. Aidan met up with Diarmaid again weeks later on his visit to the Home From Home respite centre in Killarney where the boots, complete with grass and mud from Croke Park, were raffled to help fund the facility, which caters for children with special needs and which relies mainly on voluntary fundraising. Aidan and Diarmaid’s paths first crossed at the side of the pitch when the footballer’s eyes fell on the young Killarney fan in the crowd just seconds after his team triumphed in the AllIreland final. Spotting Diarmaid at the fence in front of the Cusack Stand, Aidan walked over to him and handed his boots to the 11-year-old. The fivetime All-Ireland winner had worn the boots

in all his matches that year. “He ran towards Aidan after the game and Aidan took off his boots and gave them to him in what was a lovely, moving gesture,” said Diarmaid’s dad Dick Willis. Aidan has described Diarmaid’s smile as unforgettable. “I had my day and it was such a delight for me to make footballer Aidan O'Mahony with someone else’s Kerry Diarmaid De Bhillis from Killarney, after day,” he said. the player brought the Sam Maguire Cup on a visit to the Home from Home centre in Ballydowney, Killarney in 2014. Killarney Advertiser fantasy football league up and running With over 130 entrants so far – and cash prizes to be won every month – the league is sure to provide plenty of entertainment, writes Adam Moynihan THE quest to find Killarney’s top fantasy football manager is under way as the best wheelers and dealers in town go head to head in Killarney Advertiser’s own fantasy football league. All of our managers will put their football knowledge to the test every week by carefully selecting their team of Premier League stars. If the players they select perform well enough they could be in with a chance of scooping a Manager of the Month award, or even the grand prize in May. At the end of every month, the manager with the best record over that four-week period will walk away with €50. That means it’s never too late to join; although you might be playing catch-up in the overall tournament, you still have multiple chances to win our Manager of the Month prize. The grand prize (which will be announced shortly) will be handed out in May.

Rugby news & views HISTORY is very important in rugby. From the day that William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it, history has been made on rugby pitches right across the world. Thomond Park is no exception and history has been made on many occasions at Fortress Thomond. From beating the All Blacks in 1978 to the ‘Miracle’ Match V Gloucester in 2003, history and Thomond Park go hand in hand. History and Munster also go hand in hand. Last weekend, history was made yet again as the men in red beat Ronan O’Gara’s Racing Metro to advance to the Quarter Finals of the Champions Cup. And in a twist of history repeating itself, Munster are to play our great rivals Toulouse in the knockout stages. This is a repeat of the 2014 quarter

fantasy manager Conor Healy did just fine without him. Defender Marcos Alonso’s huge score of 21 two weeks ago and his bold selection of Andy Carroll, who has three goals in two games, both pivotal in sending Healy ten points clear at the top of the hilariously named Serie A-dvertiser. Jack O’Connor and Damien McCormick are both ten points behind and they, along with the rest of the chasing pack, will have to choose their captains carefully if they want to go get their hands on the cash. Elsewhere, Shane Doolan has propelled himself well up the table with the highest score of Gameweek 22. He triple-captained Alexis Sánchez which earned him 24 points and an overall score of 80. He’s now 21 points behind the leader. Honourable mention, too, to Conor Magill who has the best team name in the league. Unfortunately for him, you don’t get points for being gas in Serie A-dvertiser and Fiorentina Turner are

final and nine years after beating Toulouse to win their second Heineken Cup! An epic encounter is guaranteed at Thomond Park in the first weekend of April and tickets will be like hens teeth, as Munster aim to create history, this time for Axel. The Six Nations kicksoff next weekend as Joe Schmidt’s men head to Murrayfield to take on Scotland in the opener. The Munster contingent won’t need too much inspiration against Vern Cotter’s men and a cracker is on the cards. With home games against France and England, the Six Nations promises to be absolutely riveting. To this end, Killarney RFC will be holding a Six Nations draw where tickets to Ireland V France and England are the prize! This promises

to be a very popular draw, so get onto a coach or member of the committee and get your draw tickets now! Finally, our seniors won on the road last weekend, the fourth win on the trot for the lads while the youths teams are flying in their respective competitions. Our minis are due to travel to Ballymalis for a blitz hosted by Killorglin RFC tomorrow, Saturday, January 28, and the kids are really looking forward to taking on teams from Castleisland, Listowel and Killorglin and creating history of their own. All are welcome to come along and support the boys and girls of our Black and Red army!

currently 127th. After a decent enough week I’ve managed to climb up to 12th but with 25 points to make up I’m unlikely to challenge this month. I suppose it would be a bit shady if I were winning prizes in a competition I set up myself so in the unlikely event that I finish top on any given month (and trust me, given my record in fantasy football this is very, very unlikely), the €50 will go to a random manager in the league. And in the even more unlikely event of me winning the competition outright (again I can’t stress enough how improbable this is), the grand prize will go to whoever finishes second. So best of luck to all of our managers and stay tuned for more updates. Current league table: 1. Conor Healy – 172 2. Jack O’Connor – 162 3. Damien McCormick – 162 4. Kieran Costello – 159 5. Parick O’Connor – 158 6. Niall McCarthy – 156 7. Jerry O’Shea – 153 8. Shane Doolan – 151 9. Pádraig McAllister – 151 10. Cormac Foley - 150

along with coach/ selector Brendan Cummins and selector Ian Brick. The Scór Sinsear County Finals are fixed for February 18 in Castleisland, with the district finals to be completed by February 5. Aidan McCabe of Kilmoyley was confirmed as the new Kerry senior hurling captain.

THE IRON NUN

Sr Madonna Buder, known as ‘The Iron Nun ‘ began training at age 48 at the behest of Father John who told her it was a way of tweaking, "mind, body, and spirit" and for the relaxation and calmness it can bring to an individual. She completed her first triathlon at age 52 and first Ironman event at age 55 and has continued ever since. Buder is well known in the triathlon community for her achievements in age group races. She has completed over 325 triathlons including 45 Ironman Distances. At the 2005 Hawaii Ironman, at age 75, the Iron Nun became the oldest woman ever to complete the race, finishing 1 hour before the 17-hour midnight cut-off time. At the 2006 Hawaii Ironman, at age 76, she again became the oldest woman ever to complete the race, finishing with a time of 16:59:03. During her sporting career, Buder has worked hard at also raising money for various charities. She is quoted as saying, "I train religiously.” On August 24, 2008, Buder participated in the Ironman race held in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada. She was unable to finish the race by a factor of seconds as she was unable to reach the finish line within the 17 hours cut-off limit. However, 371 days later, on August 30, 2009, Buder completed Ironman Canada (Penticton, British Columbia) in a time of 16:54:30. This accomplishment broke her own record of being the oldest female to complete the Ironman distance at 79 years old. In fact, the Ironman organization has had to add new age brackets as the sister gets older.

Kerry GAA PRO John O’Leary reviews the McGrath Cup final and looks ahead to the Allianz Football League KERRY senior footballers had a very good workout in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on Sunday last when getting the better of a plucky home side with the benefit of extra time (3-13 to 2-12) to claim the McGrath Cup. Eamonn Fitzmaurice used the occasion to blood some new players – in all 24 players saw action on the day – and must have been pleased with the performances put in by some of these, especially Jason Foley, in defence. So now Kerry footballers have a two-week break before they open their Allianz Football League campaign on Sunday, February 5, with

a long away trip to Letterkenny where they face Donegal. The remaining League games are home to Mayo in Austin Stack Park on February 11 under lights; home to Monaghan in Fitzgerald Stadium on February 26; away to Roscommon on March 5 and then after a two-week break, three games on the trot starting with a home game against Dublin in Austin Stack Park under lights on March 18; away to Cavan in Breffni Park on March 26 and home to Tyrone in Fitzgerald Stadium on April 2. The final is fixed for April 9.

Basketball News with Eamonn Keogh DIVISION ONE Senior Men’s, St Paul’s Killarney 59, St Brendan's Tralee 54: St Paul’s senior men’s team were in action last Thursday night away to St Brendan's at Moyderwell Tralee. St Paul’s s t a r t e d the game slowly and were 4-12 down after six minutes. St Brendan’s remained in control throughout the second quarter but St Paul’s came back well in the third quarter and trailed 40-38 entering the final period. It was very closely contested before St Brendan’s got in to foul trouble and St Paul’s used this to their advantage by drawing fouls in the final minutes to win the game from the free throw line on a final score of 54 - 59. It was a good win for St Paul’s who had only six players available on the night due to injury.

It was going very well for Celtic after a great first half. Peter McCarthy brilliantly drilled home from distance in the fifth minute to put us ahead. Great ball control by Cathal O’Shea opened up another goal chance but full credit to Ringmahon’s keeper for a stunning save. Ringmahon did try to claim a penalty for handball in the Celtic box, but both referee and umpire weren’t buying it (correctly so, in my opinion). 1-0 ahead at the break and looking good for the second half after edging a tough first half – Ringmahon were very strong and quality players, but Celtic had a slight edge in pace and maybe in finesse. Very unfortunately, the game was held up after an unfortunate injury to a Ringmahon player. Full back Aaron Aherne, who had been about to sign for a LOI club, was stretchered off with a serious leg injury and we wish him all the best in his recovery. Aaron was treated on the day by Stefan and Fiona McMahon of Killarney Celtic, and the club are very thankful for their assistance and support, and he had surgery on Monday in University Hospital Tralee. The referee quite rightly decided to abandon the game, absolutely the correct decision in the circumstances. The replay will take place this Saturday at 7.30pm in Celtic Park; hope to see you there! Greyhound Cup: Inter Kenmare 3 Killarney Celtic B 1 Celtic did their best and Conor Murphy did score a great goal, but full credit to an on-fire Ronan Hussey with a hat-trick. Youths League: Killarney Celtic 3 St. Brendans Park 2 Lee Downing, Oran O’Donoghue , and Cian Casey made it 3-0 at half-time, and it looked all over. But against a quality side like Park, it’s never all over until the final whistle, and we were definitely sweating at the final whistle after conceding two goals! Best for Celtic were Jonathan Greene, Lee Downing, and Eoin Carroll. U12 Girls: Listowel Celtic 5 Killarney Celtic 2 Lucy O’Sullivan and Elizabeth Coffey got well-executed goals for us, but in fairness Listowel have been the standard-bearers in this grade and proved it again. U14 Premier: St. Brendans Park 3 Killarney Celtic 3 Celtic were 3-0 down at the break and looked down and out, but took over in the second half and Daniel Okute (2) and Ronan Coffey scored to give them a deserved share of the spoils. U12 Premier: Killarney Celtic 3 Killorglin 1 Kalvin O’Sullivan was in blistering form and added a hat-trick to his phenomenal goal tally for the Season in the first half. U12 Div Two: Dingle Bay Rovers 4 Killarney Celtic C 1 A young Celtic team did themselves and the club very proud and Jason O’Sullivan’s goal was fully merited. Killarney Cougars Basketball Club

SENIOR NEWS Mens Div II Killarney Cougars 61 Kcyms 58 Cougars continued their good run to remain top of the league with a narrow win over Kcyms at the Presentation Gym. The visitors won the reverse fixture last month in an exciting overtime game but it was Cougars who came through another very close contest. Cougars were ahead 15-14 at the end of the first qtr and 28-26 at half time with Cougars having a good spread of scores with John A O’Sullivan and Darren Gaffey contributing 6pts each and John Sheehan and Brian Eccles and Niall Murphy all on target with Murphy hitting an important three pointer to end the 2nd qtr scoring for the Killorglin side. The game was finely balanced through the second half with Cougars doing just enough to stay in front 44-40 entering the final qtr. Killorglin put the pressure on Cougars and had they had good chances to take the lead but Cougars held on with important free throws in the final minutes from Darren Gaffey and Alan Flynn proved decisive to ensure the points for the Killarney side in another very entertaining and close encounter at the Pres Gym. Top scorers Cougars John O’Sullivan 18pts JUVENILE NEWS U14 Boys Tralee Tigers 29 Killarney Cougars 38 Tigers hosted the Cougars in Tralee Sports Complex and the home side were looking to complete the league double over Cougars but the visitors had other ideas as they came from behind to record an impressive win. Cougars made a slow start to the game and trailed by 6pts at the end of the opening qtr with Tigers Jack McElligott and Daniel OShea and Darragh Breen all impressing for the home side with good work by Rian Colleran keeping the Killarney boys in contention. Cougars picked up the pace in the second qtr and were to take control with a strong 2nd qtr performance with Dean Sheehan excellent in defence and he opening the scoring with a fine basket that sparked the Cougars revival as they pushed forward with great scores from Tom Cahillane and Darren Ryan to leave Cougars ahead and in control by 9pts at the break. The sides were basket for basket in the 3rd qtr with Cougars finishing the stronger in the final qtr with some great baskets by Cian Doyle and Darren Ryan in what was a strong and determined team performance to take the points. Best for Cougars on this occasion were Darren Ryan, Dean Sheehan, Cian Doyle and Patrick Lyons.

U12 Girls Killarney Cougars 31 St Bridgets 19 Cougars girls made it back to back wins with victory on the road in Currow. Cougars used their height advantage to good effect. Cougars lead by 8pts at halftime and despite a good second half by St Bridgets Cougars had done enough to take the points to make two wins in a row. Best for Cougars were Aimee Coffey, Yen Lennistor, Olivia Gaffey, Alison Butler and Abigail Moynihan. Girls U18 Div 1 KILLARNEY COUGARS 50 CAHERCIVEEN 63 Another great game between these sides with Cougars ahead entering the final qtr only for Caherciveen to come with a very strong finish in the final qtr saw them come form behind to take the points. A great start by the Cougars saw them leading by 10pts in the opening minutes as Caherciveen were slow to start but they recovered to tie the game 16 all the end of the qtr. Again nothing between the sides in the second qtr with the home side pushing ahead with baskets by Shelley Clifford Kelly Ahern and the impressive Niamh O’Connor but Caherciveen again responded with good baskets with a three pointer by Caoimhe Teehan leaving them ahead 24-25 at half time. The Cougars responded well and led at the end of the third to lead 42-38 with good baskets by Kelly Ahern, Niamh O’Connor and with Shelley Clifford dominant on the boards adding 10pts but they missed the chances to be further ahead having the upper hand for much of the qtr. The visitors were to respond in style with a very dominant final qtr as they hit some excellent baskets with Siofra O’Shea and Johanna Vogel both in top form and Teehan again to the fore, and despite the best efforts of the home side they couldnt get back into the game as Caherciveen finished the game much the stronger in a very entertaining game for the good attendance. Best for Cougars on this occasion were Shelley Clifford, Kelly Ahern, Grace Cahillane and Niamh O’Connor . COUGARS ACADEMY BOYS & GIRLS Cougars Academy boys and girls were on their travels again at the weekend with Girls U10 and Boys U10 and U9 teams all in action in the County Board Blitz in Causeway. Some great games and performances by the Cougars all made possible by the Coaches and assistants that helped out at the weekend, thanks goes to John, Jp Diarmuid, Pa, Eileen and Eugene and all the parent that helped out and supported to ensure a successful weekend. Thanks to Kcyms for hosting our Academy boys at their recent National league game at halftime with boys getting to play at halftime before the big crowd against Killorglin. She did her work energetically and with pride. We wish Joan every good wish in her retirement, with her husband Hans, in Castle Falls, Ross Road. Joan was one of our hard working Fás workers and thanks to Donie Foley for all his assistance in this role.

A.G.M.2017 With all things being quiet on the playing fields it was time to do some housekeeping and so the club members gathered in the clubhouse on Friday last for our A.G.M.Chaired with great efficiency by Enda Walshe a forensic breakdown was given on all aspects of the club.It was most gratifying to see the success of our juveniles, both boys and girls and is a direct consequence of several years of tremendous work done by our Saturday morning academy - a credit to those who give so freely of their time and expertise. If anybody would like to get involved and in the process become fit, active and breathe some fine clear air on a Saturday morning we extend an invitation to drop in - our door is always open. Overall a very satisfying year both on and off the field and we look forward on several fronts to a successful 2017. CLUB PRESIDENT At Friday nights AGM the club was delighted to hand Weeshie Fogarty the honour of Club President. While the whole of Kerry and beyond know Weeshie as an Award winning broadcaster, author,Inter county referee and footballer,he was an institution in our club long before he hit the airwaves. Having joined the club at an early age after his family moved into their New Street home he went on to play with the club with great distinction and his club performances earned him inter county recognition. When his playing days were behind him he served the club in a variety of officerships and indeed while holding these roles still found time to coach and train numerous underage and senior teams. Weeshie always thinks what’s best for the club and in more recent times served on our Executive and Football committee. While it is a great honour for Weeshie to be Club President, the club feels it to be an even bigger honour for us to have a man of Weeshies calibre as our President. SOCIAL COMMITTEE With the full year ahead of us the club is delighted to announce that Brian Moriarty has great plans for the social aspect of the club starting with our awards night - which was a right good night last year! Fossa Community Games

Well done to our U16 girls basketball team who have progressed to next weekend finals after a successful Sunday morning in Duagh. Great from the girls and their coach Kate Donnellan. The U13 girls were unlucky on Sunday evening losing their Semi final to Castleisland. They followed that up with an agonising single point defeat against Currow who scored the winning basket on the buzzer. Thanks again to coaches Alan, Darren, David and to the girls Aimee, Alanna, Alicia, Alison, Ellen, Maedhbh, Melissa, Olivia and Sophie who made Fossa proud. Upcoming events.Best of Luck to the U13 Boys and U16 girls in the Basketball finals this Sunday. Anyone interested in participating in the U14 Quiz or in the U14 spike ball please contact Amanda 0863283778 or in swimming contact Katherine Butler 0863152247 Remember the dates for all upcoming events and who to contact about them can be found on our Facebook page.
