"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Keeping up with the Gobnaits in Killarney FORGET about keeping up with the Kardashians, in Killarney we’ll all be striving to emulate the Gobnaits these coming weeks. Their unique flair for fashion quickly overshadowed any interest in the red-carpet style at Academy Awards as the doughty quartet strutted their stuff on the streets of the town on Monday to make their debut as this year’s unofficial mascots for St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne. They were swift to dispense words of wisdom, in particular announcing details of the 2017 festival. “Because Killarney has always had that global feeling, a very topical theme for St Patrick’s Festival 2017 parade is ‘Diversity’ – variety in every culture and tradition,” they stated. Anne Marie Kennelly, chairperson, St Patrick's Festival Cill Áirne, said: “One year on from our Centenary celebrations, we thought we should celebrate our Diversity, showcasing the

variety of sports, activities, clubs, musicians, dancers and everyone in our community. This is what the St Patrick’s Day Parade has always been about – honouring all the fantastic work that is done in our community and acknowledging all of their fantastic achievements.” The festival committee is calling on all local businesses and the community to play their part. Apart from the regular festivities, the festival committee is also running the annual “Best Shop Window Display”, with Lynes of High Street taking the accolade in 2016. Greening is always going to be a big part of St Patricks Festival ad the committee is encouraging businesses and communities to light up green for this coming St Patrick’s Festival weekend. “It would be magical if every business and commercial building took part to make us the greenest town in the land,” said Anne Marie.

Have your say on Killarney’s future

EDITOR'S VIEW

USUALLY in Killarney there is a slight lull between New Year’s celebrations and the frenzy of St Patrick’s week. But this year the town seems to have hardly paused to draw a breath with car parks filling rapidly to capacity over the past two weekends Of course, popular events such as The Gathering Traditional Music Festival had much to do with this, with trad performers, their concertinas, accordions and bodhráns in tow, converging on Killarney along with their delighted fans. Later this week, Tuesday saw the top-class production Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story Onstage twirling its way from London’s West End to the INEC where its talent-

ed cast have been holding audiences spellbound. It came as no surprise to anyone in Killarney when hoteliers reported a strong start to the year. Delegates at the Irish Hotels Federation annual conference, which unfolded in Kilkenny this week, said business levels are up compared to this time last year and they are also seeing an increase in advance bookings for the year. This week Killarney Advertiser celebrates its 44th birthday, and we take the opportunity to marks the publication’s history while looking to the future. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

OUTSIDE GANGS BELIEVED TO BEHIND KILLARNEY BURGLARIES

GLENFLESK MAN’S PLEA FOR RETURN OF MEDALS

A GLENFLESK man has made an appeal for the return of GAA medals with huge sentimental value which were stolen from his home last Saturday. The medals range in date from 1903 to 1913 and had been won by Edmund Spillane whose grandson Ned Spillane has offered a reward for their return. The historic medals include one won by Ned’s granduncle Tim O’Shea and have huge sentimental value for the family. The rare medals, which include a gold 1913 All-Ireland football medal, a silver medal from the 1908 Munster final and a 1913 Croke Cup medal, were stolen during a spate of burglaries in the Loughquittane/Glenflesk area. Gangs of what are described

as “travelling criminals” from outside the county are believed to have been responsible for the robberies during which six properties in the Loughquittane/ Glenflesk area, on a stretch of road along the N22, were targeted. The thieves made off with cash and jewellery also in the robberies, which gardaí believe occurred between 6pm and 8pm on Saturday. All of the houses were unoccupied at the time. Residents returned to discover doors forced and windows smashed. Contact Killarney Gardaí on 064-6631222 if you have any information that could help the investigation.

Paul Nagle is the current World Rally Car codriver with the Citroen World Rally Team. He co-drives with Northern Irish man Kris Meeke. Following a very successful 2015 where they won the event in Argentina and came second in the UK rally, 2016 saw podium wins at Rally Portugal and Rally Finland. Ger Conway and Rob Duggan won the 2016

They also drove for this team on the world championship round at Wales Rally GB and finished off the year by taking the modified win at our home rally the Killarney Historic stages. Stolen car recovered before owner knew it had been taken A KILLARNEY man got a welcome call from Killarney Gardaí in the middle of the night last weekend telling him that his car, which he thought was parked outside his home, had been located near the Cleeney Roundabout following a pursuit by Gardaí. The car had been taken from outside the owner’s residence in the Lewis Road area on Friday night after thieves gained access to the house and stole the car keys and other property. Diligent Gardaí who were on routine patrol in the area came on the car being driven erratically and endeavoured to stop it and a pursuit ensued. Two occupants in the stolen car fled on foot after they abandoned the car near the Cleeney roundabout. All property has been recovered and a definite line of enquiry is being followed. Gardaí are advising homeowners to fully secure their properties at nighttime and car keys should also be properly secured.

‘WE’RE DELIGHTED AND OVERWHELMED’ BY EVE KELLIHER IT’S AN advert that has bewitched the nation since it illuminated television screens and it’s made stars of a real-life couple from the Killarney area. Kate and Mick O’Sullivan reflect in the advert, part of AIB’s latest campaign, on their journey from down payment to the last day of their mortgage. These musings are intercut in mesmerising fashion with home movie footage and old photos featuring their three children and their home. And while their mortgage story is one that’s familiar to most families, there is something magical about the campaign that has captured the imagination of TV viewers of all ages. The reaction locally and nationally has stunned the couple. “We’re delighted and overwhelmed by the feedback,” Mick, who works in his family’s business Dero’s Tours, told the Killarney Advertiser. “When we were making the ad we didn’t expect that there would be this level of positive feedback, or that it would be this big.”

As for the emotional and witty remarks they have encountered following the screening, he laughed: “We have had a lot of funny comments. You couldn’t print some of them, but it’s all been very enjoyable!” Kate and Mick O'Sullivan.

Eve Kelliher meets the dazzling duo who are wowing audiences at the INEC as they star in Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage AN UPLIFTING experience both for its stars and its audiences, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage opened to a rapturous reception in the INEC, Killarney, on Tuesday. Set in 1963, Dirty Dancing was based on the real-life establishment called Grossinger’s Hotel in the Catskill Mountains of New York The classic story comes to the stage complete with those hit songs that formed a soundtrack to many teenage years, including Hungry Eyes, Hey! Baby, Do You Love Me? and of course (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life. The West End production, which runs in the INEC until tomorrow night, March 4, was greeted by standing ovations all round in recent days. And the excitement from its super-talented stars was palpable when I met them prior to curtain up on Tuesday. Portraying Johnny Castle, the role made famous on the silver screen by Patrick Swayze, is a dream come true for Karl James Wilson. “When I was a kid, I was a massive fan of Patrick Swayze,” he said. “He has been a major influence on me, he was just so cool.” And in between dazzling audiences in the INEC, Killarney, he and Katie Hartland, who plays Frances “Baby” Houseman, have been enjoying a close-up view of the world-renowned Kerry scenery, including at a lakeside photo-shoot in Killarney with award-winning photographer Valerie O’Sullivan on Tuesday. Karl, who prior to his arrival in Kerry this week had visited the Glenbeigh area with his partner, was also looking forward to showing Katie the Ring of Kerry. Katie noted that the training for the show, produced by Karl Sydow and Paul Elliott, was intense from the start. “The first three or four days were non-stop, hardcore, we were dancing all day,” she said. The UK tour has taken over £10 million pounds since it hit the road last August and, judging by the standing ovations in the INEC this week, it’s not hard to see why. Tickets are available from the INEC Box Office, 0646671555, www.inec.ie or from Ticketmaster.

FROM KILLARNEY TO PUERTO RICO VIA CORK THREE massive Liebherr container cranes are destined for Puerto Rico next week, via Cork. Liebherr Container Cranes was this week completing loading of three STS container cranes on board the Albatross heavy lift vessel, prior to sailing to Puerto Rico. The Liebherr cranes dominating the skyline at Rushbrook near Cobh are large ship to shore container-

handling cranes. They will be moved to berth at the deep-water quay at Ringaskiddy where final bracing and ballasting for the two-week voyage to Puerto Rico will take place. The cranes have been assembled at Doyle Shipping Group’s Cork Dockyard facility over the past number of months by a team of experienced assembly and installation personnel under the

supervision of expert Liebherr engineers. The transfer of the cranes to the Albatross is being carried out by Mammoet, a specialist engineering firm. Liebherr typically ships its cranes from Fenit, in large preassembled components but in this instance the cranes have been fully assembled prior to shipping. This is the first time fully erect container cranes have been shipped from

Ireland, although Liebherr have previously undertaken this task overseas. Each of the cranes weighs 1000 tonnes and have an installed power of 1.5 megawatts. The cranes can lift two containers at once and have an outreach of almost 40 m, a span of 30.48 m and a back reach of 15 m. Each crane measures over 100 m from tip to tip and when the boom is raised, stands 82m tall.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

WHEN COMPASSION LEADS TO CHANGE

THE transforming power of compassion will be the focus of a special Lenten talk in Tralee on Monday, March 13. Richard Moore will give the talk, entitled When Compassion Leads to Change, part of the Lenten Justice series, in St John’s Church, Castle Street, Tralee, at 7.30pm. This event, starting at 7.30pm, is being hosted by St. John’s parish And the Diocese of Kerry’s Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation committee. Entrance is free and all are welcome. As a ten-year-old child, Richard Moore was blinded by a rubber bullet during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Just as his life emerged as a triumph out of tragedy through his experiences of compassion in the face of challenges, Richard’s founding of the charity Children in Crossfire draws on his vision to work towards building a better world for those caught in the crossfire of global poverty, injustice and inequality. His Holiness the Dalai Lama said of Richard: “I consider him not only my friend, but also my hero. Why? Because while I talk about forgiveness, Richard Moore lives it.”

How reflexology can help you

KILLARNEY

MAKEUP ARTIST

CASTS A SPELL

Reflexology helps release stress, which in turn helps the body heal and regenerate itself, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

REFLEXOLOGY works with the central nervous system. The reflexologist’s application of pressure to feet sends a calming message from the peripheral nerves in these extremities to the central nervous system, which in turn signals the body to adjust the tension level. This enhances overall relaxation, brings internal organs and their systems into a state of optimum functioning, and increases blood supply (which brings additional oxygen and nutrients to cells and enhances waste removal). It positively affects the circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, immune, and neuropeptide systems. Reflexology reduces pain by reducing stress and improving mood. Pain is a subjective experience created by your brain. The brain

B U Z Z

FOR GUCCI

does this in response to the sensory experience of pain, but it can also work independently of sensory input and create pain in response to emotional or cognitive factors. Thus things that influence the brain, such as your mood or external factors like stress can also affect your experience of pain. According to this theory, reflexology may reduce pain by reducing stress and improving mood. There is a "vital energy" in the human body. If stress is not addressed, it leads to congestion of energy, which in turn causes bodily inefficiencies, which can lead to illness. Reflexology helps keep the energy flowing. Launch of Kerry Daffodil Day 2017 THE Killarney Daffodil Day Committee will host the Kerry Daffodil Day launch at a coffee morning in the Killarney Towers Hotel on Friday, March 3. Two keynote speakers will provide an insight into the work carried out by the society locally. Nancy Dineen, an Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse in Killarney, cares for cancer patients at the end of their life in their own home. Last year 77 cancer patients in Kerry received 369 nights of care through the Society’s Night Nursing service. Ciaran O’Halloran, volunteer driver, has recently volunteered as a driver with the Society’s Volunteer Driver Service in Kerry.

This free service transports cancer patients to their chemotherapy appointments. In 2016 298 journeys were facilitated for 33 patients from Kerry. Daffodil Day takes place on March 24, 2017, and plays a significant role in supporting the Irish Cancer Society’s vital services for cancer patients and their families in Kerry and nationwide. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Daffodil Day and the Irish Cancer Society needs to raise over €3m to provide care, information and support to people affected by cancer. “The local Daffodil Day committee are appealing to the public to volunteer to sell daffodils on March 24 and to donate to support people affected by cancer,” said Kathrina Breen of the Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society. Speakers at Friday’s event will include Michael Healy Rae, TD, Eugene O’Sullivan, chairman of the Killarney Daffodil Day Committee, and Mark Mellett, head of Fundraising, Irish Cancer Society.

BY EVE KELLIHER MILAN FASHION WEEK was all the more enchanting this year thanks to a super-talented Killarney makeup artist. Kathryn O’Neill’s creative vision enhanced Gucci’s autumn/winter show in the Italian fashion capital. Kathryn was the only Irish-based artist on the elite Gucci team headed by superstar makeup artist Yadim. She created otherworldly looks on a team of 75 female and 45 male models. “This was a huge show, the biggest and most exciting of Fashion Month,” Kathryn told Killarney Advertiser. The show was titled The Alchemist’s Garden and Kathryn’s brief was to create makeup looks to evoke Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele’s theme of “a garden inhabited by signs,

symbols, and archetypes invoking and recalling remote worlds”. “There was also only one Irish model, the divine Lorna Foran, who has graced the pages of British Vogue. She was one of my models at the show,” said Kathryn. Gucci recently opened a new 377,000 square feet HQ in Milan. A former aeronautical factory built in 1915, it is now Planet Gucci, complete with a studio for Gucci’s resident graffiti artist, entertaining areas for clients, showrooms and 2,000 square feet of catwalk space. “The show took place there for the first time,” said Kathryn. “Also this was the first time Gucci combined the men's and women's show into one mega show.

Stretch yourself each month with yoga workshop AILEEN KINGERLEE will be running an Iyengar yoga workshop on the first Saturday of each month. The workshops will take place in The Brehon Hotel from 10am to 12.30pm. “This is a great way to deepen your yoga practice or start your yoga journey by exploring the details of the poses,” said Aileen. Iyengar yoga focuses on the alignment of each of the asanas (poses) ensuring that the full benefits of the movements are felt.

“It helps to increase flexibility, improve strength and stamina,” said Aileen. “The use of props ensures that people are in the poses correctly and safely.” Aileen has been teaching for ten years and loves the beauty of the awareness and the inward journey that yoga brings. “This will be a great way to stretch yourself into the start of each month,” she said. St Patrick’s Festival Killarney PARADE DIARY

VOLUNTEERS ARE CRUCIAL TO FESTIVAL’S SUCCESS The newly appointed creative director of the St Patrick’s Day parade in Killarney, Fiona Crowley gives an overview of the lead-up to the annual event SO I WONDER if St Patrick landed outside the Fitzgerald Stadium at 2pm on March 17, would he be bemused or amused by the sight of a population dressed in head to toe in a sea of green, shaking hands and wishing each other a Lá Féile Pádraig and the blessings of St Patrick! Well, whatever his reaction would be it is definite that he would be in total awe for all the work that happens behind the scenes to make this day a memorable one for all! The work being done by the St Patrick's Day is not just commendable but heroic at times. Everyone on the committee and sub committees work on a totally voluntary basis, with their only aim being to make the festivities of the day enjoyable, exciting and safe for everyone involved.

The committee started preparing for St Patrick's Day 2017 last March after St Patrick's Day 2016! They meet on a regular basis and then from September to November worked on coming up with the theme for this year – Diversity, which is a perfect theme to incorporate our ever changing, wonderful society. This year has been particularly challenging as due to works on Plunkett Street, the parade had to be rerouted. Thanks to the help of the Fitzgerald Stadium committee, the problem has been solved and the parade now has a new starting point at the stadium. SuperValu has come on board this year also to sponsor prizes for winners of various categories. To calculate the number

Grace Notes It’s show time at Killarney School of Music

The Killarney School of Music holds its annual student concert at the lNEC Killarney and the most recent one was held on Sunday, February 19, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

EVERY year I am blown away by the sheer logistics of this concert. Everywhere you turn there is a student tuning up, warming up or limbering up. Parents, families and friends pile in to support the performers and the energy is always one of appreciation and support. This year Jayme Linehan and I were delighted to have our choir perform on this big stage. The group were nervous but they were also very enthusiastic which made the experience a very enjoyable one for us. Every year I feel as though us teachers are like a bunch of mammies and daddies running around making sure our babies are ok! I unfortunately didn't get to enjoy the entire show as we were rehearsing with the choir beforehand, but I was very impressed by what I did see. Marina Blyth presented her harpists in

the most beautiful way. Everyone on stage was dressed in a fairy-style costume and an Irish dancer danced while they played. It was so mystical and imaginative. Ray O’Sullivan's young actors did their teacher proud, as did Ray himself as he was, as always, a wonderful MC for the evening. The highlight of the concert for me was Padraig Buckley's performance group. This concert is an absolute credit to Tadhg and Padraig Buckley. In fact, the school is a credit to them. It is always a pleasure to go to work there as they have created a space where we can all be ourselves and feel comfortable. I like to think that everyone who goes there feels they are part of the Killarney School of Music family. I am proud to be a family member. • Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

Wedding bells for Eoin and Sarah BY EVE KELLIHER

O

NE wedding led to another for Eoin O’Connell and Sarah Leavey. Fossa native Eoin and Sarah, from London, first laid eyes on one another eight years ago when he was attending a wedding in the Randles Court Hotel where she was working as a receptionist at the time. They exchanged vows in the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa in a ceremony led by parish priest Canon Tom Looney and held their reception in the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Sarah’s dad John Leavey walked her down the aisle and also helping the newlyweds celebrate were Eoin’s parents Pearl and JJ O’Connell and Sarah’s grandparents Hannah and Bill Leavey and Margaret Brady. Natalie Leavey was chief bridesmaid with Mags O'Connell, Samantha O'Donoghue, Sandra Hickey and Emma Coulson as bridesmaids. Lending their support in the role of groomsmen were Mick O'Connell, Kenneth Clifford, Colin Myers, Seamus Moriarty and Colm Foley. Also at the heart of the action in the role of flower girls and pageboys were Sarah’s cousins Ava and Liam Leavey and Eoin’s niece and nephew Hannah and Finn O’Driscoll. Eoin popped the question on Rossbeigh Beach. “I drove Sarah back that day and we took a walk

on the beach where I had a spot marked out to drop to the knee,” he said. “I had photographer Marie Carroll O'Sullivan on hand to catch the moment by camera and I had organised Pat Moynihan's red double-decker to surprise her in Ashe’s Bar, Glenbeigh, after with all our friends and family waiting for us in the bar after to celebrate.” Friends and family travelled from across Ireland and Australia as well as from London and Chicago Xxxx for the wedding. Sarah looked picture-perfect in a bridal gown sourced in Bridal Bliss in Cork teamed with the veil that had been worn by her mother, the late Michelle Leavey, on her wedding day. Amanda Keane from Fossa Hair Salon took care of the bridal hairstyling with makeup by Aine Doherty. Truly Diverse ensured the newlyweds and their guests danced the night away. The Killarney-based couple enjoyed a threeweek honeymoon in Thailand. Eoin works in sales and marketing with O’Donoghue Ring Hotels and Sarah is a healthcare assistant with Boots Pharmacy. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@ killarneyadvertiser.ie

Essential tips for heating efficiency THE Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) says your objective when it comes to home heating is to learn how to make your home comfortable with the minimum amount of heat, by using the heating systems and the controls that you have. Experiment with the following tips and mix and match to see what works for you. ✔Switch the heating system on later in the morning and off earlier in the evening. The best way to find the right balance for your house is to experiment a little, first of all try turning on the central heating 30 minutes before you get up and off 1 hour earlier in the evening. ✔Turn the heating in living areas down to 20°C – this could save you 10% off your heating bill. The temperature in hallways and bedrooms should be cooler – ideally 15-18°C.

Boru Stoves Roadshow at Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets, Killarney BUILDING a new home or renovating? Don’t miss the Boru Roadshow coming to Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpets, Cork Road, Killarney, today, Friday, March 3, Saturday, March 4, and Sunday, March 5. The Boru Roadshow 38 square meter mobile display unit has over 17 individual products, including fully functioning and lighting stoves and is a fantastic display of quality Irish manufactured stoves from boiler stoves and dry stoves to stunning insert and double-sided stoves. It can be difficult to know just what stove to buy and if that stove will meet the requirements of your home – will it have the output required to heat the space, what fuel type does the stove need, do you need to heat water and run radiators from the stove? So if you are thinking about improving your heating system, upgrading to a stove or upgrading your existing stove, come along and the expert team of Boru and Corcoran’s staff will guide you through what’s on offer. Find out everything you need to know about purchasing a stove and the benefits for your home from dedicated Boru and Corcoran’s staff on Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4, 9.30am to 6pm and Sunday, March 5, from 1pm to 6pm at Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpets beautiful new Tiles, Bathrooms, Stoves and Fireplaces Showroom, Cork Road, Killarney.

✔Use temperature cards (available from SEAI) in a number of rooms, to prevent overheating and familiarise yourself with what different temperatures feel like. ✔If you have a thermostat on your central-heating boiler, experiment to get the lowest setting (some systems may require a plumber). You can reduce it in mild weather, but don't go below 60°C. Typically, the optimum setting is between 70°C and 80°C (i.e. adjust the dial between 'min' max' on gas boilers) — but it really pays to experiment. Make a note of the settings you try, and the results you obtain to control the heat output in response to

the weather and indoor temperatures. ✔Use Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) to adjust heat output from radiators when in rooms in response to your heating needs. ✔Turn off your heating at night when you're in bed and likewise when you're not there, or if you're going to be away for a few days. ✔Open the curtains and blinds in rooms facing south during the day to let in the heat of the sun. ✔Use conservatories during sunny winter days to heat the house by opening the doors from them into the house while it's sunny, but by closing them when it's overcast and dark outside. ✔Effective use of windows provides sufficient ventilation without overcooling rooms. Don't leave external doors and windows open unnecessarily. ✔Use internal doors to maintain heating zones and distribution of heat throughout the main spaces. Close doors to separate heated from unheated areas of your home, and minimise the heated area. ✔Turn off radiators in rooms which are not used very often.

Green Schools are a class act How to minimise unnecessary heating of hot water

LEARNING about sustainable energy all starts in the classroom and schools in the greater Killarney area are hotbeds of expert knowledge when it comes to home energy and renewables. Green Schools is Ireland’s leading environmental management and education programme for schools.

The programme is operated and co-ordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce (FEE member for Ireland). An Taisce Green Schools project delivers SEAI's Schools workshops, which are directly linked to the curricula and are great way to inform and involve pupils and teachers in ways to save energy, and will help schools to achieve their Green Flag.

Workshops are delivered free of charge and involve inquiry based learning through experiments, videos, games and talks. There are specific workshops for Junior Primary; Senior Primary; first, second and transition year secondary classes. Also available are CPD Energy workshops for Primary School Teachers that qualify for ‘Croke Park hours’ (subject to school management approval in accordance with DES Circulars) and are particularly relevant for schools applying for their Green Flag for Energy. Workshops are open to all schools and are allocated on a first come first served basis. Early booking is advisable. To find out more information and to book a workshop email seai@eeu.antaisce.org or phone 01-4002225.

We are only using a fraction of renewable resources available RENEWABLE energy resources are abundantly available in Ireland. However, only a fraction of these resources have been tapped so far. They offer sustainable alternatives to our dependency on fossil fuels as well as a means of reducing harmful greenhouse emissions and opportunities to reduce our reliance on imported fuels. Renewable energy constitutes a core element of the Government’s overarching energy policy. As outlined in the Government’s Energy White Paper (2007), this policy is built around the three important pillars of: • security of supply; • environmental sustainability and; • economic competitiveness It is widely acknowledged that renewable energy has a significant role to play in meeting all three of these objectives. The White Paper states: “Renewable energy is an integral part of our climate change strategy and sustainability objectives. The additional diversity which renewables bring to Ireland’s energy demand will also make a direct contribution to our goal of ensuring secure and reliable energy supplies.”

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland has tips on efficient use of sinks, showers, baths and other appliances ALWAYS consider the amount of hot water needed and when it is required and determine the most efficient use of your central heating systems and immersion heaters. Evaluate your routine of hot-water demand – when you need hot water and how much you need – and adjust the timer settings. If you use an immersion heater or central heating to heat your water, adjust the length of time they are used per day, depending on your needs. If your hot water is being heated by the central-heating boiler and your hot-water cylinder has a thermostat, you should set the thermostat to 65 °C. Make sure your immersion thermostat is working correctly. (Have an electrician check this for you.) Prioritise use of the shower over a bath. A typical shower uses only 20% of the energy of a full bath Never leave a hot tap running unnecessarily. Ensure your hot-water cylinder is properly lagged. A lagging jacket will keep the water hotter for longer. - See more at: http://www.seai.ie/Power_of_One/The_Steps/ Step_2#sthash.zMWUhcus.dpuf

FRIENDS and family of the late Sheila Mac Kelliher have joined together to host a series of events in her honour and to raise funds for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Sheila, whose first anniversary occurred on January 31, passed away after a brave battle with illness. In appreciation of the incredible support Sheila and her family received from the palliative care team, her friends and family have organised a number of fundraising events. The first of these events was a coffee morning

held last Thursday in The Dromhall Hotel. This event alone raised a staggering €7,735 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. A golf classic will take place at Mahony’s Point, in Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. The classic takes place across two days – Thursday, May 4, and Friday, May 5, and an estimated 320 big hearted golfers are set to take part. Finally, three walks have also been organised for Friday, May 5. The 3km, 5km and 10km routes will take walkers through Knockreer Estate.

Registrations for both walks will take place on the day at Killarney Golf Club. Kerry Hospice Foundation funds a wide range of palliative care services throughout Kerry. The care is provided by a specialist team and their mission is to enable people with lifethreatening illnesses to live life to their full potential. CAREER OPTIONS How do I apply for a third-level scholarship? A large number of scholarships and awards are made available by third-level institutions to incoming and continuing students each year, says career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan SCHOLARSHIPS and awards vary from scholarships awarded to students for having achieved outstanding exam results to awards for excellence at sports and other subject areas. While you must apply for some of the scholarships that are available, others are automatically awarded to students who fulfil certain criteria such as the annual entrance scholarships, which are given to incoming students who have achieved a high level of specified Leaving Cert points. The amount awarded varies and can be in the range of €500 to approximately €2,000. The extra financial support is valuable to all students so it can be worthwhile to make enquiries from your college/s of choice to

O LETTERS TO THE EDIT EVERY year on Easter Sunday, almost 500 children and young people with special needs travel to Lourdes for a week. Each group undertakes to raise the fare for the children and young people in their care while all carers pay their own fare. The children and young people have a fantastic experience. The highlights of the week include the Irish and international Masses, visiting the Grotto as well as taking a day trip to the beach or to Gavarnie where the guests can take a trip on a cable car. The guests really enjoy the social aspect of going into a coffee shop and relaxing while joining in, in a singsong over a cup of hot chocolate, tea or an ice cream. Fundraising is always a challenge and each group must raise €14,500 in order for this wonderful trip to happen. The money raised sends children and young people with special needs to Lourdes. The week also provides a break or form of respite for carers and parents.

Celtic Steps charity concert in aid of Lourdes pilgrimage

As part of our fundraising efforts, Group 305 is hosting a charity concert. A great night’s entertainment is in store as Celtic Steps will entertain the audience. The Provocateur 11 PERMITS SEIZED IN CRACKDOWN ON ABUSE OF DISABLED PARKING SPACES RTÉ REPORTED this week that 11 permits have been seized on the first day of a Garda operation targeting people parking illegally or without proper permits in disabled parking spots. Gardaí say one of the permits had been forged and another had been photocopied. One person caught was getting her hair done and using her mother’s permit while another was using her ex-boyfriend’s permit. Disability campaigners say they are increasingly frustrated by the numbers of people parking illegally in wheelchair spaces. As it stands, motorists who do not adhere to the rules are dealt with through a fixed-charge notice of €80, that can rise to €1,000 if left unpaid. Anyone caught using a fake badge can face a fine of up to €2,000 or three months in prison. All the agencies involved in ‘Operation Enable’ are urging motorists not to block access to disabled bays. Finally something is being done about this morally reprehensible act. It is with disbelief that someone would take advantage of this basic entitlement. I have stood in disgust seeing a vehicle park in a disabled space with no visible entitlement to be there. From experience, approaching these individuals only incites aggression. What can you expect from an individual that takes liberties like this in the first place? If you have reason to believe someone is parked illegally in a disabled parking space take a record of the vehicle registration, time and date, and report it to the Gardaí. Do not confront the individual.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

MOTHER ON PROTEST WALK FROM CORK TO DUBLIN A CORK mother who set off on foot from Mallow to the Dáil this week said she has been left with no option but to pursue this course of action for her daughter. Vera Twomey’s daughter Ava needs medicinal cannabis to ease the seizures she suffers brought on by Dravet Syndrome. Vera says the Government has failed her and claims the lack of legislation around medicinal cannabis is putting her daughter’s life at risk People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny joined Vera on her march on her walk to the Dáil. This is the second time the determined mum marched from Cork to Dublin in a bid to get Health Minister Simon Harris to allow her daughter access medicinal cannabis. When Killarney Advertiser contacted Vera on Wednesday evening, she was tired but upbeat as she stepped it out to cover the gruelling 260km walk from her home to the Dáil as a protest. Vera has been in a number of meetings with Minister Harris and has tried to get the Minister to allow Ava access cannabisbased medicine on compassionate grounds. Ava, who would have suffered dozens of seizures on a daily basis, has had access to CBD oil costing around €300 a month. CBD is a cannabidiol and is legal in

Vera Twomey on the road from Cork to Dublin to help her daughter Ava

Ireland because it does not contain any THC, the psychoactive part of the cannabis plant. Last week, Vera Treleased a harrowing video of Ava suffering a seizure to TV3. She said that, despite the high profile that Ava’s case has garnered in recent months, nothing had really been done to change the situation she was in. When Twomey and her husband, Paul, released the video to TV3, they said they had reached their “last straw” and felt like they badly needed something to be done. Life’s a beach in Kerry WELL, yet again our county has topped the polls for its beautiful beaches. TripAdvisor has published its annual list of Ireland’s best beaches, with a new number-one for the first time in four years. Banna Strand, near Tralee, has been named Ireland’s top beach in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards for 2017. Inchydoney, Co. Cork, which had topped TripAdvisor’s best beaches list for three years

running and was voted Ireland’s Favourite Beach in our Reader Travel Awards 2017, has this year dropped to second place. Kerry beaches, in fact, are all accounted for in the top six. Derrynane is in third place with Inch Beach in fourth place and Coumeenoole in the sixth spot. Travellers’ Choice award-winners are determined based on traveller reviews gathered over a 12-month period, TripAdvisor says.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD GET FRUITY TO PROTECT YOUR HEALTH We all are aware of the guidelines that we all need to eat five portions of fruit and veg a day for optimal health, but with the publication of some recent research, it appears that five a day may not be sufficient, says Trevor O’Donoghue SCIENTISTS at the Imperial College in London have carried out an extensive meta-analysis of 95 previous studies with over two million participants that looked at the relationship between food, disease and mortality. Specifically the study looked at stroke, cardiovascular disease, heart disease, cancer and deaths related to the above. One of the key findings of the research was that five portions of fruit and veg a day was good for you, but to get the maximum protection against disease and premature death, ten portions a day is recommended. Put simply, the scientists estimate that up to 7.8 million deaths worldwide, could be prevented each year if people ate ten portions, or 800 grammes of fruit and veg each day. An 80g portion of fruit and vegetables equals approximately one small banana, apple, pear or large mandarin or three heaped tablespoons of cooked vegetables such as spinach, peas, broccoli or cauliflower. To help fight against heart disease, stroke and cardiovascular disease, apples and pears, citrus fruits, salads and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, lettuce and chicory, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are most effective. To reduce cancer risk then load up on green vegetables such as spinach or green beans, yellow vegetables, such as peppers and carrots, and cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli. activity, but across all variables it was still found that increased fruit and veg intake was beneficial. In the fight against stroke, cardiovascular disease and heart disease, the study reports that benefits were to be found up to and including the tenth portion. The studies analysed did not record quantities greater than this, so there may even be additional benefits for consumption beyond 10 portions a day. In the fight against cancer, maximum benefit was seen after consumption of 600g or 7.5 portions a day, with no additional benefit for consumption over this amount. For those interested, the research can be found online in The International Journal of Epidemiology under “Fruit and vegetable intake and the risk of cardiovascular disease, total cancer and all-cause mortality–a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective studies”.

BIG congratulations to Saoirse Clifford, Killarney, and Sean Slemon, Moyvane, who returned as champions from the All Scotland Dancing Championships last week. Saoirse was named under-11 girls champion and Sean retained his title as under-15 boys champion. Both dancers are trained by the Sheehan Murphy School of Irish Dancing, run by Norrie Sheehan and Aine Murphy. Other students from the school also impressed, booking their slot in the upcoming World Championships. Some 11 dancers from the Killarney dance school travelled to the event in Glasgow. Saoirse’s brother Mark won third prize n the under-14 boys category and Liam Healy was in fourth position in the same contest, while Kate Horgan was 14th in the under-11 girls competition.

SUCCESSFUL innovations that impact on our lives are often taken for granted over time. Our mobile phones are a case in point, we can’t get out of bed without consulting this trusty partner. However can we remember a time when we were without them? We shudder to think! For those of us old enough to remember, you may have stumbled across the first edition of the Killarney Advertiser 44 years ago today and wondered about its purpose? Little did you known that you were reading one of the very first local publications in Ireland. An innovative communication tool for the local market, it was the Facebook of its time. In 1973 the Killarney Advertiser offered a single voice for the community which was unheard of at the time. It opened up the community to itself and delivered a message to the visitor that was both inviting and informative. Remember there was neither Internet nor mobile phones back then. The communication tools available were limited to say the least. The Killarney Advertiser was a communication solution ahead of its time and, like all new innovations, it took time to establish itself. However over the years the Killarney Advertiser has successfully

evolved into a “must read” community product. Success brings its own responsibility and in the early years this was measured by community interaction. My father saw it as his responsibility to guide this “community notice board” through difficult economic times. This sense of responsibility is ever present in the wonderful staff that nurture and develop the Killarney Advertiser today. As a team we always challenge ourselves in how we deliver this information. Over the past 12 months we have launched a full online edition and our daily social media posts have had a dramatic increase in followers. We had over 2.4 million visits to our website last year and we are currently developing a range of satellite products to showcase our knowledge and skillsets in the marketing field. More importantly the Killarney Advertiser is in a constant state of development, so you can’t miss it! As we enter our 45th year we are very clearly focused on the future and the challenges ahead. Killarney is an exciting and inspiring environment to work in. We should always appreciate and acknowledge that our community of Killarney is a team effort and the Killarney Advertiser is privileged to be part of that team.

SUPER SEVEN KILLARNEY LADIES POWER THEIR WAY TO GLORY BY EVE KELLIHER BIG congratulations to the seven Killarney ladies who powered their way on to the international stage. Some 10 contestants, all from Phoenix Fitness, Grosvenor Court, Killarney, entered the national final of the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation Championships held in Monaghan, recently. Seven of these qualified for the world championships, which will take place in Antwerp in Belgium in June. Their coach, Sean McCarthy, congratulated all 10 who took part, including international champion Frances Arthur, who broke the world record for the deadlift and squat and European bench-press.

Sandra Evans, Melanie Aranda, Shinann O’Sullivan, Niamh O’Carroll, Derina Kelliher, Diane Horgan, Ella Grzybowska, Hazel Galvin and Orlaith O’Driscoll were the 10 contestants who arrived back to Killarney bearing trophies. Sean also paid tribute to Kieran Doody who who helped train the group also as well as masseuse Christina O’Sullivan and Tommy Evans. Phoenix Fitness opened in 2015 and in that time has had many successes in powerlifting competitions. Women’s classes take place on Mondays from 8.30apm9.30pm and 8pm-9pm on Friday nights. Private sessions are also available. Contact Sean on 0857898123.

Celtic get ready for their biggest week ever BY ADAM MOYNIHAN UNDER normal circumstances, Friday night’s league clash with Killarney Athletic would be one of the biggest games of the year for Celtic. As it turns out, it probably isn’t even their biggest game of the week. The club's remarkable FAI Junior Cup odyssey continues next Saturday (March 11th) with a home tie against highly-fancied Limerick side Janesboro, a game that is surely the most important in the club’s history. Janesboro are second favourites to win the tournament outright so even with home advantage Celtic will need to be at their very best if they have any hope of advancing to the semi-finals. To help prepare for this crucial fixture the club have arranged a high-profile friendly with a Cork City XI. The Leesiders will bring with them some first team regulars as well as fringe players and U-19s, so it’ll be good work out for Brian Spillane’s men. The game takes place on Monday evening at 7pm in Celtic Park.

Kevin O’Connor, Cork City.

Hoteliers report strong start to 2017 KILLARNEY and Kerry hoteliers were well represented at a major conference this week which reported a good start to the year. The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) carried out the survey in advance of its 79th annual conference in the Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny. Most say business levels are up compared to this time last year and they are also seeing an increase in advance bookings for the year. However, while hoteliers nationally have a positive outlook for their business in 2017, on the back of a record year for tourism in 2016, their optimism is tinged with caution. Half (50%) of the hoteliers surveyed say that the fall in sterling has already had a direct effect on their business.

STORM FORCE Debby Looney notes how despite the bad weather, some blooms are still thriving

THERE is nothing like the force of the recent storms to illustrate the need for windbreaks and hedging. This is particularly true when you live on an exposed site – you need not one windbreak, but one for each section of the garden! Despite the bad weather however, the forsythia is blooming along with Daphne odora. Forsythia is a fantastic plant for gardens with poor soil and a lot of space, as it happily grows anywhere. Daphne odora on the other hand, likes a fertile, slightly acidic and very sheltered site, but if you have such a spot it will reward you with beautiful fragrant mauve flowers. This year my hope is to create a fruit garden, and I must start by deciding where it will go. Most fruit bushes need 6 hours of sunlight to produce fruit, and while this is not a problem, unfortunately these areas are also the most exposed ones. Slowing down wind by using semi-permeable materials, such as netting or plants is preferable to constructing a wall. (Walls can actually increase wind speeds on the “protected” side). So a blackthorn hedge it is. Next thing on the agenda is soil preparation.

Almost all fruit bushes and trees are greedy, so plenty of well rotted manure or compost should be dug in. A welldrained soil is also preferable, incorporating sand and moss peat is a good idea. I have already procured some Aronia plants, or chokeberries. These are native to North America, and should do very well in our weather. They produce masses of purple berries, a little like black currants. I will also plant Tayberries, which are raspberries crossed with blackberries, named after the river Tay in Scotland – a fact which I think bodes well for growth in Kerry! Another unusual berry is the Jostaberry, a cross between 2 types of gooseberry and a black currant. I have one of these growing and it is doing superbly. The berries are delicious. 2 Quince trees and a Mulberry tree will form the backdrop to these as well as gooseberries, raspberries and currants. I would urge anyone with even a small garden to invest in at least 2 fruit bushes, there is nothing more rewarding than eating fruit straight off the plant, a great way to encourage children into the garden!

Meitheal tackling rhododendron problem in Killarney I TOO wish to compliment you on highlighting in Killarney Advertiser the problems arising from the proliferation of rhododendron in parts of Killarney National Park. The presence of this invasive species presents an ongoing challenge to NPWS personnel and to the general public. It is, however, important to state that the plant has been eliminated from many hectares and that this has been accomplished by Park staff and volunteers under a scheme that operated for a number of years. The many who gave of their time and energy so generously deserve to be thanked and commended. More recently the Killarney Meitheal Group

58

Killarney Advertiser 03.03.17

has undertaken the strenuous task of fighting the rhododendron. During two recent Saturday morning outings upwards of 30 volunteers began the eradication process on the land across the road from Torc Waterfall car park. Simply cutting the plant is of little use; indeed it only encourages further propagation by layering thus increasing the number of heads and adding to the plant density. The method being used by the Meitheal under the guidance of Park staff is that of making an incision at the base of the stem and pouring a little prescribed root killer into the “wound”. This method is, we are informed, very successful in killing the individual shrub.

The Meitheal is a voluntary group of local people who have in recent years done wonderful work enhancing the approach roads to Killarney through weed removal, roadside edging, the elimination of Ragwort and also by doing agreed work within the National Park. The seed capital for the Meitheal is provided by the Trustees of Muckross House. The Meitheal is composed totally of volunteers. There is no membership fee. All that is required is a willingness to work for the advancement of the greater Killarney area for the benefit of local and visitor. Michael Gleeson (Councillor), Clasheen, Killarney

ALPINE A110 UNVEILED RENAULT’S Alpine brand has released images of the born-again mid-engined, rear-wheel drive A110 sports car it plans to reveal at the Geneva motor show next week. The choice of name resurrects the nameplate Alpine used from 1961 to 1977 for its mid-engine

rear-drive coupe, which became famous after winning races like the Monte Carlo rally in the early 1970s. The Alpine will come with a lightweight aluminium structure and advanced aerodynamics aids.

The A110 will be the lightest in its class, tipping the scales at around. It will also come powered by a mid-mounted 1.8-litre turbocharged fourcylinder engine developed by Renaultsport and rated at up to 225kW, most likely matched to a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

2017 FERRARI 812 SUPERFAST UNVEILED AHEAD OF GENEVA DEBUT

FERRARI has unveiled the latest generation of its 12-cylinder coupe series with the 812 Superfast. Under the bonnet lies a 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 producing 588kW of power at 8500rpm, and 718Nm of torque at 7000rpm making it 43kW more powerful than the outgoing F12. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h takes just 2.9 seconds, with a top speed in excess of 340km/h.

60

Killarney Advertiser 03.03.17

Styling for the 812 Superfast was penned inhouse by Ferrari (as opposed to using external sources such as Pininfarina), building on the F12's classic fastback lines. The 812 Superfast name itself pays tribute to classic models in the Ferrari catalogue including the 500 Superfast. That car made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1964, where it crowned the

range as an ultra-exclusive Gran Turismo powered by a 5.0-litre V12 engine with 400 horsepower (just under 300kW). Ferrari made only three dozen examples of the 500 Superfast. The F12 had so many cues taking us back to the beautiful 250 GTO. This is the next evolution of the GTO. It's Magnific. These will be all sold before the Geneva Show is finished.

F1 Circus is back THIS week sees the F1 circus set up in Barcelona for pre-season testing. The 2017 regulations see more exciting cars (pic: the width of the tyres) and offer teams a blank sheet of paper in terms of developing new cars for the upcoming season. per lap, it has offered very little in the way of shaking up the order of things. Mercedes are topping the timesheets each day. Ferrari, as predicted are next up with Red Bull close behind. The mid field is still running a similar order to last year and McLaren are struggling at the back. The hope would be that some

team would have found something special over the winter in the way of interrupting the new regulations to challenge Mercedes. If they have they haven’t shown their

hand this week. Red Bull during their championship winning years have sandbagged early tests but this doesn’t appear to be the case. Ferrari have had consistent running. On initial times they are the only challenger to emerge at this point. What is interesting is the new cars are running very reliably with some teams running race distances each day. The season kicks off on March 26 - Australia (Melbourne).

New and used car purchasing trends changing for the better DID you know that one out of every two new cars purchased are financed by means of a loan? As times change so do trends. Toyota Flex finance now reflects this new trend .It is the preferred choice of finance tool that customers are using to get their new car. Enjoy the security of real guarantees and say goodbye to the uncertainties you've come to expect from traditional methods of car ownership. “With Toyota Flex we can tailor a repayment package for you, starting with a deposit as low as 7% of the onthe-road price,” said Michael O’Keeffe of Bowler’s Toyota Garage, Ballycasheen, Killarney.

Michael is at hand to answer and assist any queries on this. “When customers arrive to purchase their new or used car they want me to tailor a monthly payment that best suits them, this can be achieved via the Toyota Flex finance facility,” he said. “Nowadays customers want clarity so they can budget ahead for holidays and other plans so it reassuring to them that they have finance option that suits them.” Toyota was the best selling passenger car for 2016 and Toyota is currently the bestselling passenger car for 2017 (up to the end of February), according to figures released by the SIMI.

DALY

In loving memory of our Beloved Mother Mary Courtney, Lissivane West, Milltown, Who died on the 2nd March 2016.

In loving memory of Sheila and Sean Daly, late of 1 O’Connell Tce, Killarney who died on 4th March and 10th March 2012.

You can only have one mother Patient, kind and true, No other friend in all the world Will be the same as you.

We thought of you with love today but that is nothing new We thought about you yesterday and days before that too.

When other friends forsake you, To mother you will return For all her love & kindness She asked nothing in return.

We think of you in silence We often speak your names All we have are memories and your picture in a frame.

As we look upon your picture, Sweet memories we recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile to one and all.

Your memory is our keepsake with which we’ll never part God has you in His keeping We have you in our hearts.

May the winds of love blow gently and whisper in your ear how much we love and miss you Mom as it dawns the first year.

Always remembered by Mike, Brendan, Johnny, Eileen, Liz, your sons and daughters in law and grandchildren.

BRADY

In loving memory of Michael Barry late of Coolies, Muckross, Killarney. Today, like many other days Brings special thoughts of you Of happy times we shared And of caring things you used to do. Once more, it’s a reminder That life’s road is sometimes rough Because the time we had together Just wasn’t long enough. Always loved and sadly missed by your wife Catherine. So many things have happened, Since you were called away, So many things to share with you, Had you been left to stay, Every day in some small way, Memories of you come our way, Though absent, you are ever near, Still missed, loved, and always dear. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by your son Liam and daughter-in-law Helen. Memories grow deeper as time goes on, We long for a face, And a smile that has gone, Your memories are precious, And precious you’ll stay, No passing of time will take that away. Lovingly remembered your son Donogh and daughter-in-law Mel. A special smile, A special face, In my heart, A special place, Memories are a gift to treasure, Mine of you, Will last forever. Always in our thoughts Love your sisters Eileen, Mary, Katie, nephews Padraig and Dave and Godchild Shannon. xxx

1ST ANNIVERSARY DOOLEY

In loving memory of Thomas Dooley, who died on the 1st March 2016. When you lose someone special, The hurt is hard to hide, When it is your husband, The hurt goes deep inside, The day that we were married, They told us we were one, But they never told us what to do, When half of one is gone, What do you do with half a heart, Now the other half is not there, You were the other half of me, A life linked to my own, What do i do with half a life, Now that i am on my own. Sadly missed and never forgotten by your wife Vera.

ATTENTION TURNS TO HOGAN CUP SEMI-FINAL AS

THE SEM DEMOLISH THE GREEN An impressive second half display was enough to clinch the school’s 22nd Corn Uí Mhuirí title, writes Adam Moynihan ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE 2-20 TRALEE CBS 0-11 IT TOOK them a while to get going but an emphatic third quarter blitz helped the Sem to run up another huge score en route to a comprehensive victory over great rivals Tralee CBS. This phenomenal high scoring has become a trademark of Garry McGrath’s teams over the past couple of years and with another Munster championship in the bag, their sights are firmly set on next month’s Hogan Cup semi-final. To be fair to the Green, the scoreline doesn’t accurately reflect the overall balance of play. They were arguably the better team in the first half and actually seemed to have the Sem on the ropes for spells, especially around the middle third where the likes of Joe and Tomás O’Connor put in really solid shifts. Marc Ó Sé’s side took an early 3-1 lead but fine scores from Donnchadh O’Sullivan, Niall Donohue, Cian Gammell and Mark O’Shea put the Sem two points up midway through the

72

Killarney Advertiser 03.03.17

first half. Despite labouring somewhat for the rest of the period they managed to hold onto that lead going in at the break, O’Sullivan’s free on the stroke of half time making it 8-6 to the boys from Killarney. Two superb goals in the opening stages of the second half swung the game irreversibly in the Sem’s favour. With 37 minutes on the clock, star forward David Shaw played a one-two with Mark O’Shea before rifling his shot to the roof of the net to extend the lead to six. Shaw and Tomás O’Connor exchanged points before the excellent Donnchadh O’Sullivan and wing back Jack Griffin pushed the lead out to eight. When midfielder Billy Courtney broke through and fired beyond the Green keeper to make it 2-14 to 0-9 after 44 minutes, the game was all but done. In the end, the relatively young Tralee outfit couldn’t quite go the distance and the Sem ran out 15-point winners. St Brendan’s now have another All-Ireland semi-final to look

forward. They’ll play the winners of the Connacht championship the day after Paddy’s Day. (Just in case there wasn’t already enough sport for you that weekend.) Having waited twenty-three years for the second Hogan Cup (1992) and twenty-four for the third (2016), it’s asking a lot of this crop of Sem footballers (as talented as they are) to go back to back. But if they manage to retain the same focus and ruthlessness they’ve shown in abundance over the past two years, they have every chance of doing just that. Sem scorers: David Shaw (1-4), Donnchadh O’Sullivan (0-7, 4f), Billy Courtney (1-1, 1f), Mark O’Shea and Jack Griffin (0-2 each), Niall Donohoe, Cian Gammell, Barry Keane and Dara Moynihan (0-1 each) Sem team: Robert Osborne (Legion); Lorcan McMonagle (Crokes), Chris O’Donoghue (Glenflesk), Seán O’Leary (Kilcummin); Jack Griffin (Crokes), Michael Potts (Crokes), Niall Donohue (Firies); Billy Courtney (Crokes), Cian Gammell (Legion);

Dara Moynihan (Captain - Spa), Donnchadh O’Sullivan (Firies), Barry Keane (Listry); David Shaw (Crokes), Mark O’Shea (Crokes), Ciarán Flynn (Firies). Subs: Michael Devlin (Legion) for Keane, Mark Harnett (Crokes) for Flynn, Evan Cosgrave (Firies) for Donohue, Mark Fitzgerald (Crokes) for Griffin, Niall McCarthy (Spa) for O’Shea and Diarmuid Brosnan (Firies) for McMonagle.

ST BRENDAN’S RETAIN CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ IN IMPRESSIVE STYLE Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on St Brendan’s feat in winning back-to-back Corn Uí Mhuirí titles ANY team that scores 2-20 deserves to win out a competition and this is what St Brendan’s did in Tralee on Saturday last when they won back-to-back Corn Uí Mhuirí titles. Tralee CBS scored 11 points; no mean score against such talented opposition provided by St Brendan’s, who move on to the semi-final on March 18 when they will set about defending their All Ireland title, the Hogan Cup. St Brendan’s were a joy to behold especially in that second half when they scored 2-12 confining Tralee CBS to five points. On the evidence of this game Brendan’s will be confident that they can add back-to-back All Irelands. DAVID SHAW MAN OF THE MATCH Due credit to the Tralee men for making it such a close and exciting first half. They went in at half time just two points adrift eight points to six, but once David Shaw, my man of the match, struck for his side's first goal in the 36th minute it looked ominous for Tralee. Shaw won the ball out in the corner, was well marshalled but gave the pass. He collected the return and there was nothing Shane Foley could do with this piledriver. From that point onwards it was all St Brendan’s. In fairness to the Tralee men they battled bravely, but the outcome was never in doubt. It was only a matter of how much Brendan’s would score. They have been consistently high scorers throughout this year’s campaign running up an average of 25.3 points per game. They outscored that average on Saturday evening, with a total of 26 points. What’s more their average winning margin in the Munster trail was 15 points and they did exactly the same in this final, 26 points to 11. Brendan’s biggest winning tally was their defeat of Árdscoil Uí Urmaltaigh, Bandon. They won that game 2-24 to 0-8. They scored 2-12 in the second half last Saturday playing against the breeze in to what used to be the John Mitchel’s end.

MIKEY KELLIHER Tralee CBS were first to score in the third minute when Mikey Kelliher was fouled and thus came the first point for Tralee. In the fifth minute David Shaw sent over a sweet point to open his side’s scoring. Brendan’s were not having the expected pull at midfield as Joe O’Connor, Tomás O’Connor and Tom Hoare had the better of the exchanges i lár na páirce. Full forward Gearóid Fitzgerald and Mikey Kelliher caused plenty trouble in that opening period. St Brendan’s went ahead in the 13th minute with a point from Cian Gammell making it 4 points to 3 and they held this lead throughout. Points were exchanged on both sides with the impressive Donnchadh O Sullivan pointing to send his side in to the recess leading by 8 points to 6. Tralee had kept in touch making the most of some turnovers. A TIRED TEAM Mind you Tralee CBS never gave up in that second half, but so dominant were St Brendan’s in all sectors of the field that Tralee could not match the intensity of the opposition. That long saga of extra time and replays with Coláiste Chríost Rí took

its toll on Tralee CBS. Brendan’s ruled as champions. Captain Dara Moynihan really came in to his own with his dashing and speedy up field forays. Tralee got one real chance of a goal in the 41st minute but Robert Osborne was equal to the challenge. After great work by the impressive Donnachadh O’Sullivan, Billy Courtney raised a green flag in the 43rd minute and that finished any hope of a Tralee revival. Apart from the brilliant Shaw I was very impressed with the play of Donnchadh O’Sullivan, Jack Griffin, Mark O’Shea and fine second half performances by Sean O’Leary and Dara Moynihan. Well done St Brendan’s and to the triumvirate management team of Garry McGrath, Arthur Fitzgerald and Hugh Rudden. If the team keeps playing football like they have done in this Munster campaign then greater honours lie ahead. In the Corn Uí Mhuirí role of honour St Brendan's lead the field with 22 titles stretching back to 1929. The more recent ones were 1994, 2008, 2010, 2016 and now 2017. Tralee CBS have 15 titles to their credit. KERRY LOSE TO MONAGHAN IN KILLARNEY Kerry suffered another frustrating defeat in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last when Monaghan edged them out 2-8 to 1-10. Only one Kerry player scored from play and that tells its own story. To make matters worse Bryan

Rugby news & views LAST Friday night, we brought our Killarney RFC U8s and our girls players to Thomond Park to watch Munster take on Welsh outfit Scarlets in the PRO 12. There was much excitement on the bus up to Limerick as the kids looked forward to seeing the men in red play and hopefully extend their lead at the top of the table. The weather reports looked ominous as we left Aghadoe and the misty conditions on the way up to Limerick made us think that the match might be a washout. However, a cracking first half saw Jaco Taute cross the white line right in front of us at the try line, for the opening try and Tyler Bleyendaal scored another right in front of us. There was much to cheer about as Conor Oliver crossed for the third of the night and the score stood at 21-6 at half time. Some people joked that we may not see too much of the action in the second half from our vantage

Sheehan was on the field just two minutes for David Moran when he got a straight red card for lashing out after he was fouled. Goals win matches and Kerry had three great first half chances to raise green flags. Paul Murphy’s effort came off the upright in the sixth minute. David Moran did score a fine goal in the 12th minute but untypical of Dingle man Paul Geaney he missed a gilt-edged goal opportunity in the 19th minute. Three minutes later Brendan Kealy brought off a great save but Jack McCarron followed up for a goal. Five minutes in to the second half Gavin Doogan scored Monaghan’s second goal to bring the sides level 2-3 to 1-6. Sensing victory, Monaghan went on to win. The next game for Kerry is away to relegation bound Roscommon and that will not be easy. All in all Kerry are on a poor run considering that great first round away win versus Donegal. KERRY GAA SUPPORTERS CLUB The Kerry GAA Supporters Club AGM will be held on Monday, March 6, at 8pm in Ballygarry House Hotel. All are welcome. The Kerry senior footballers’ next away game is Sunday, March 5, in Hyde Park, Roscommon and a day trip is planned for this game. All seats must be booked no later than March 2. The final away game of the Allianz League against Cavan takes place on Sunday, March 26. This is an overnight stay.

point, however, the Scarlets had different ideas. Three tries in quick succession saw the lead disappear and Scarlets ran out winners in the end on 21-30 with Munster scoreless in the second half and losing their first home game of the season. A disappointing finish, however everyone really enjoyed the trip to Limerick and the visit to McDonalds certainly raise the spirits! The national side were also in action last weekend as Rory Best’s men took on France at the Aviva, hoping for a better result than Munster’s the night previous. The selection of Johnny Sexton over Paddy Jackson caused much debate in the build-up, but Sexton silenced his detractors with a superb display. A man-of-thematch display from Conor Murray saw Ireland win 19-9 and are surely two of the first names on Warren Gatland’s Lions plane! Next weekend, the lads travel to Cardiff and hope to pile more misery on Wales,

who were beaten by Scotland for the first time in 10 years. A very interesting Six Nations championship this is working out to be for sure! Closer to home, Killarney Rugby Club’s under-18s travelled to Crosshaven for the final match of the season, in very difficult weather conditions. This was the quarter-final of the U18 Bowl and unfortunately were beaten by a very strong Crosshaven side on the day. Killarney found it difficult to cope with the Atlantic gale which made it impossible to retain possession. It was a tough match but the lads can be proud of themselves for the hard work and huge commitment shown right across the season. Well done to Pat F. O'Connor, Denis Reen and Ger Maher for their hard work across the season also.

U16 CUP Killarney Celtic 3 Mastergeeha 1. Mastergeeha exited this year’s cup away to Celtic on Tuesday night. The home side took the lead early on but after this Mastergeeha defended well. In the second half Mastergeeha pushed forward and crated some chances with Dylan Murphy and Alan O’Sullivan going close. However against the run of play the home got a second goal on the break. In the closing stages Mastergeeha got a consolation goal. All tried their hardest and could not be faulted for effort. U17 Castleisland 5 Mastergeeha 2. On a heavy pitch away the boys battle hard but the stronger home side won out. The home side went two up before Mastergeeha got a goal back when Sipo O’Neill crossed for James Lynch to score. CORK CITY VISIT KICKS OFF BIGGEST WEEK FOR CELTIC This Monday March 6th see a Cork City FC selection take on Killarney Celtic in a glamour friendly at Celtic Park with a 7pm kick off. The two clubs have built up a very good friendship over the years and have played a number of friendly matches. Our nearest Airtricity Premier League of Ireland Club has also been a big supporter of our Football For All with our players taking part in half time games at Turners Cross. It has been a good start to the season for John Cauldfield’s men who, like Killarney Celtic, already have a trophy in the cabinet as they won the Presidents Cup for the second time beating Dundalk in the pre season game. The Cork City selection will contain a number of regulars plus some fringe players and u19’s and the game will be great workout for Celtic ahead of the Janesboro game. FAI JUNIOR CUP LAST 8 All eyes will then turn to the FAI Junior Cup clash when Celtic welcome top Limerick side Janesboro from Limerick to town on Saturday March 12th. There is a very big crowd expected for this game and it is also the chosen game by Aviva who will host their coverage of the quarter finals from the club. Patrons are asked to come early to the game and work with the stewards on the way in and out of the game as Celtic Park is in a residential area and the club appreciates the support of its neighbours on these big nights. These are hugely exciting times for Killarney Celtic so let’s hope the journey continues. now turns to the Munster Junior League Division 3 play offs next weekend, which sees the lads take on Douglas/Carrigaline at Aghadoe next Sunday at 2pm. Best f luck to the lads. Let’s get out and support the lads as they push for promotion YOUTHS Next weekend sees our U16’s return to action. Our U16’s are away to Charleville in the KCL Shield (kick off is 2pm), Best of luck to Tom Campbell’s charges as they also take on Listowel the following weekend at Aghadoe. MINIS Last Friday night we brought our U8’s players and girls players to Thomond Park to see Munster take on Scarlets in the PRO 12. Munster were looking to maintain their place at the top of the league, however Scarlets had other ideas. Almost 50 kids, coaches and parents watched Rassie’s men go ahead with three tries in the first half and it really looked like Munster would easily win the game. However, 3 tries by the Scarlets in quick succession in the second half saw Munster lose 21-30. Everyone really enjoyed their trip and though it was late by time the bus rolled into Aghadoe, spirits were high and everyone had a trip to remember. Thanks to Minis Coordinator Liam Murphy for organising. On Saturday, our minis travelled to Tralee RFC to take part in the latest round of the West Munster Blitz series. We played teams from Listowel and Kenmare as well as the hosts and fielded great numbers at all ages. Though the day was wet with a misty rain all around, the pitches were in good shape and some fantastic rugby was on display. Thanks to Tom Cronin and all the crew for organising and the hospitality on the day. Well done to everyone who took part. Training resumes next Saturday between 10:30am and 12. U18’S Our U18’s travelled to Crosshaven for the final match of the season, in very difficult weather conditions. This was the quarter final of the U18 Bowl and unfortunately were beaten by a very strong Crosshaven side on the day. Killarney
