Sheer Class Of Newly Crowned All-Ireland Club Champions THE cheers ricocheted across Croke Park as in a wonderfully touching gesture Dr Crokes captain Johnny Buckley invited young Dr Crokes member Amy O’Connor to share the moment of victory as the club savoured their first All-Ireland in a quarter of a century. Amy’s smile lit up Croke Park and the crowd roared its approval as the 10-year-old, who has been battling serious illness over the past year, lifted the Andy Merrigan Cup with the Dr Crokes captain on St Patrick’s Day. The gesture embodied the sheer class of the newly crowned All-Ireland Club Champions and it is what sport is all about. See our news special (pages 40-43) and our sports columnists’ take on the big game in our Sport section. The following day, the streets were riot of black and amber for the homecoming as the people of Killarney turned out in force to salute the sporting heroes. Huge congratulations to all involved in the milestone victory. And congratulations are also in order to the organisers of the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney. There was a packed house in the International Hotel on Tuesday evening as chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly together with her dedicated committee and Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Paul O’Neill presented the awards. Man charged in relation to thefts of cash and jewellery A MAN has been charged in relation to a spate of burglaries in Killarney and surrounding areas in December 2012. William Cawley appeared at Midleton District Court on Thursday evening last, charged with possession of stolen property comprised of cash and jewellery with an approximate value of €30,000. The 33-year-old had been extradited from the UK on foot of a European Arrest Warrant which was obtained by detectives from Killarney who have been investigating the matter for a number of years. The property was stolen during the course of a spate of burglaries in Killarney and surrounding areas in early December 2012. William Cawley was remanded in custody to Mallow District Court.

By Eve Kelliher THE dedicated Heart of Killarney volunteers have said they are relieved and delighted following the return of a missing defibrillator on Main Street. The AED was removed from the landmark telephone kiosk sometime between Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday. Volunteers behind the life-saving project promptly issued a plea for its return and Damien Baker and Eilish Coffey of the Heart of Killarney discovered at lunchtime on Tuesday that it had been replaced. “We are on Cloud Nine at its return. To say we were gutted and disheartened when it could not

be located is an understatement,” Damien told Killarney Advertiser. “But we would like to thank the person who returned it as well as Killarney Gardaí who dedicated such effort to finding it also. We are very grateful to the Gardaí as well as to Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and Kerry County Council for their continued support.” The Heart of Killarney project, which was launched last year, is one that is being emulated by other towns. “Plans are at an advanced stage for defibrillator phone boxes for both Fossa and Woodlawn and a national rollout is also underway,” added Damien.

Additional security measures have been put in place to protect the Main Street defibrillator, including a code-lock and 24-hour CCTV system. “The phone box remains accessible to the public with the new code for the code lock to be printed clearly on the door,” said Damien. “With the code on the door similar to that used in other AED cabinets we hope that it will deter vandalism whilst still keeping the AED accessible to the public in an emergency.” Derek O’Leary, Killarney Heart Safe can be contacted on 087-266 2395 or email info@heartofkillarney.

NEWS Standing Ovation For Killarney Musical Society

24.03.17

The Lambeth Walk is in vogue in Killarney this week thanks to Killarney Musical Society’s production of Me and My Girl. Eve Kelliher Reports On The Dazzling Opening Night THEY first presented the musical Me and My Girl almost two decades ago and the talented Killarney Musical Society members have certainly repeated its success. Delivering star turns that would do justice to a West End stage, the cast won a deserved standing ovation on Wednesday night. The musical comedy, which is set in England during the 1930s, continues its run at the INEC tonight, Friday, March 24. The well-known numbers such as the toe-tapping "Lambeth Walk”, “The Sun Has Got His Hat On” and the title song “Me and My Girl” had the audience humming along. The story centres on Bill Snibson, a somewhat unrefined Cockney gentleman who learns he is the heir to the Earl of Hareford. However, Bill’s inheritance depends on his ability to adapt to this new and unfamiliar world, which may not include his love, Sally Smith. Ian McGuirk plays the role of Bill with Lily MacMonagle taking on the part of Sally. Sir John is played by Gerry Adams, Derek O’Leary plays Mr Parchester and Pádraig Creedon and Rory Ward take on the roles of Charles and Gerald Bolingbroke respectively. Orna Cleary O’Shea gives a stately turn as the Duchess while Emir Guihan plays Lady Jacqueline. Killarney Musical Society previously performed “Me and My Girl” in the Aras Phádraig 19 years ago. In 1998 Aileen Ferris Rohan undertook the role of Lady Jacqueline. “Aileen was involved in numerous productions with the Society from 1992 to 2013. Last year, Aileen sadly passed away and this production is dedicated to her memory,” said Ann Ivory, Killarney Musical Society PRO. The production team includes Killian Collins (director), John O’Brien (musical director) and Stephen Cullinane O’Regan (choreographer). Tickets can be booked by calling the INEC Box Office on 064-66 71555.

Killarney Quiz Whizzes On Their Way To All-Ireland Contest WHEN it comes to general knowledge, a hotshot team of Killarney youngsters have shown they have what it takes to wow in the national stakes. We wish the team from Gaelscoil Faithleann, Cormac Rowe, Daire O’Brien, Ben O’Carroll and Isabelle Whitely (Cormac O Rua, Dáire O Brian, Ben O Cearbhail and Isabelle Ní Fhuitligh), the very best as they get set to pit their wits against their fellow quiz whizzes in the grand final of the All-Ireland Credit Union Schools Quiz. The pupils, representing Killarney Credit Union, qualified for the epic event in Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee when they were presented with sought-after silver medals in under-13 competition at the Chapter level of the event. This meant the Killarney pupils came out on top after competing with teams from 21 other primary school teams representing the credit unions across Kerry and west Limerick. The first and second-placed teams now progress to the national finals which will be held in Dublin on Sunday, April 2. “The competition was intense with the narrowest of margins separating the teams at the end of a most enthralling and entertaining afternoon,” said Helen Courtney Power of Killarney Credit Union. “It took tie-breaker rounds to separate the teams in the under-11 and under-13 competitions.” Scoil Mhuire, Killorglin, representing Tralee Credit Un-

Impressive Turnout For Kerry Businesswomen’s Network Event OVER 90 delegates attended the “Revolution E” conference co- sponsored by The Rose Hotel and hosted by Kerry Businesswomen’s Network (KBN) last Friday. The morning kicked off with a brief on VAT impacts on an international scale with Francis Moriarty of PSC. Former IBM senior sales manager Jean Philippe Pierre evaluated some of the personality traits, cognitive requirements, human judgements and behaviours that occur during a sales process. Dr Theo Lynn covered the diverse benefits of cloud computing, in-

cluding services on demand, reducing costs, sharing and configuring computing resources. Clio O’Gara of Tierney’s Automated Solutions gave an overview of why automation is the future of marketing. Clio’s talk tied in with the visiting speaker from Vancouver Canada, Daniel E. ‘There Wasn’t A Topic In The World That Finbarr Couldn’t Talk About’ By Eve Kelliher KILLARNEY said a sad farewell to hugely popular Finbarr Slattery this week. Finbarr, who passed away on Saturday, was a familiar sight on his trusty bicycle, with a smile and a friendly wave for everyone he met. He was fittingly described as “one of life’s gentlemen” by parish administrator Fr Kieran O’Brien, who was principal celebrant at the requiem Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Monday. “Finbarr said when he got to 75 every year was a bonus, he got 16 bonuses, due to the excellent care from Carmel and his family,” Fr Kieran told the congregation. “He lived his 91 years to the full, he had his finger on the pulse of a lot of things in life, had many interests and was a most interesting man.” Noting that asking Finbarr was superior to checking Google for an answer, Fr Kieran said: “There wasn’t a topic in the world that he couldn’t talk about, farming, politics, sport and life in general, huge amounts of knowledge in his brain that he was so willing to share.” Fr O’Brien added: “For 30 years every Tuesday morning,

we waited for the publication of the weekly newspaper ‘Now and Then’, which became ‘The Kingdom’ and he had his own page called ‘Worldwide’ and wrote on many, varied and wide subjects of the day." Horseracing was his great interest, and Finbarr was a great asset to Killarney Races, serving as its secretary for 14 years. “He did a lot for racing and it was nice to see so many of his racing friends and jockeys attend his removal last night and again today,” said Fr Kieran, who added: “God must have known Cheltenham was on last week, and waited to until Saturday until it was all over. We were able to tell him all the winners during the week and that the Crokes won the All-Ireland Club Final which brought a great smile to a dying man.” Finbarr, of Orchard Close, Countess Road, and formerly of Asdee, is mourned by his wife Carmel, daughters Aideen, Sinead and Niamh, seven granddaughters, relatives and many good friends.

SINCE 2003 Fossa man Eddie Sheehy has been fundraising for an education project in a poverty-stricken area located near the city of Nairobi in Kenya. Each year he spends a number of weeks teaching in the local secondary school, many of whose students are sponsored by money raised locally in Killarney. It costs €200 to sponsor a student in secondary school and €100 to sponsor a student in primary school. The project also supports a feeding programme in the village which provides a hot meal for 140 orphans each evening. “One of the success stories of the project is the development of a soccer academy in the village to engage teenagers in a positive project which brings great pride to all involved,” said Eddie.

“Of course the success of the project is due to the generosity of people in Killarney and Kerry who have supported the project since 2003. Thanks to all the businesspeople in Killanrey who support the table quiz each year and to all the people and groups for their generous donations.” The annual table quiz takes place on March 30 at 8.30pm in the Castlerosse Hotel Eddie is a former teacher of St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School and the school recently presented him with a cheque for €570 to support him in his inspirational work. The sum was raised through a Christmas jumper event organised in the school. Eddie’s daughter, Triona, a former pupil, has followed in his footsteps and is teaching in Nkaimurunya this year.

TechTalk With Chris Reina

Online Internet Fraud Welcome this edition of TechTalk. Every few weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email: chris@teachtech. support with suggestions.

This week is Part 1 of 2 looking at - Online Internet Fraud. Online Internet Fraud can take many forms. These can include Malware, Spam, Viruses, Ransomware, Harvesting and Phishing to name but a few. Malware This is software which is specifically designed to disrupt, damage, or gain access to your computer system. Often downloaded unknowingly from a website or email. Spam These are irrelevant or unsolicited messages sent over the Internet (usually email), typically to a large number of users, for the purposes of advertising, phishing or spreading malware. Phishing This is the fraudulent practice of sending emails or making a phone

call purporting to be from reputable companies (banks, airlines, computers) in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. The phone calls can take the form of someone telling you they are ringing from Microsoft and have detected a virus on your computer. Viruses These are pieces of code which are capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data. Ransomware This is a type of malicious software designed to block access to your computer system until a sum of money is paid. Email Harvesting This is the process of obtaining a large number of email addresses through various illicit methods. The purpose of harvesting email addresses is for use in bulk emailing or for spamming. In Part 2 next week we will look at how to avoid these schemes and fabrications.

Rathmore clubman, as Aidan and his wife Denise welcomed their daughter Lucia two weeks ago and Aidan and his dance partner Valeria Milova have spent most of the week rehearsing in Killarney so Aidan can be near his family. “Without doubt Aidan is the most improved dancer of all the celebrities and his journey to the final has had its ups and downs,” said

show spokeswoman Deirdre Crookes. He will battle it out against his fellow finalists Aoibhín Garrihy and Denise McCormack on Sunday. Meanwhile, after attending a performance of Killarney Musical Society’s “Me and My Girl at the INEC on Wednesday, students from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School

caught a glimpse of the Dancing with the Stars finalist. The students were delighted that Aidan took time out of his training to pose for a picture. “We would like to wish the Kerry GAA legend the very best of luck on Sunday night’s grand final for Ireland’s top dancing celebrity,” stated a spokeswoman for the school.

Green Day In Killarney

Ross Castle, Killarney.

The Europe Hotel & Resort, Killarney, were overall winners in this year’s St Patrick’s Festival Greening competition which was won by popular vote on social media

THE Europe Hotel & Resort turned others green with envy this week as it took a bow as winner of this year’s St Patrick’s Festival Greening competition. The competition results were decided by vote on social media. The very close runners-up were Lyne's of Killarney, High Street. Other commendable buildings were, Killarney Plaza Hotel, Killarney Municipal Area, Foley's Bar, New Street, St Mary’s Cathedral and The Speakeasy, High Street. An estimated reach of 33,000 people engaged with this fun contest. Killarney was bathed in a magical green glow as its buildings, both modern and historic, were lit in

green for the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney. Each year landmark buildings such as St Mary’s Cathedral, St Mary’s Church of the Sloes, the Franciscan Friary, the Methodist Church and the Old Monastery take on an emerald hue. “The initiative not only aesthetically brings the St Patrick’s Festival to life at night, it is much more than this,” said St Patrick’s Festival Killarney chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly. “It is so wonderful to bring such key landmarks in the community together and the churches have been very receptive to allow us green their buildings.”

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels

JOHN 9:1-41: A long story like the one we have today provides many different points of entry for prayer. Read the story and stay with what resonates with you. Some possible points of entry are as follows: The blind man was healed. Can you recall occasions when some blindness of yours was taken away and you could see in a new way? What was that experience like for you? The Pharisees claimed to be the ones who could see, who knew where God was to be found, when in fact they were blind. It was the man born blind who showed himself open to see the hand of God at work in what happened. There can be some of each in us. What has helped you to be open to seeing the hand of God at work in your life? Who have been the Jesus people who have led you to this point? There are many characters in the story: Jesus, the blind beggar, the disciples, the neighbours, the blind man’s parents, and the Pharisees. Put yourself in the position of each one and see what you learn from identifying with them. John Byrne OSA, Veritas

Musings

“AS HE walked along, he saw a man blind from birth….” The opening question of the disciples was, “Who is to blame?” This is a common question in the media today; perhaps it is part of my own vocabulary. Jesus reminds his disciples, and us, that sometimes no one is to blame but that difficult situations present an opportunity for us to be drawn into God’s presence. Lord, there were times I was lost and found, was blind and then could see. Thank you. The man’s blindness is cured, but the blindness of those who won’t believe in Jesus remains. I think of how I grope, stumble, and am unsure of my direction unless I can rely on Jesus, the light of the world. Sacred Space 2017 – Messenger Publications

We Are Not Blind, Surely?

WHAT a convoluted Gospel we have this weekend. The healing of the blind man unleashes a chain of chaos and confusion. His neighbours are dumbfounded, the Pharisees are suspicious and at war with one another, and the Jews are cynical, even calling in the man’s parents as witnesses. The character of Jesus, and of the blind man, are called into question as everyone tries to figure out what has happened. Jesus and the man who has been healed are both accused of being sinners. The interrogators even ridicule the man, asking, ‘Are you trying to teach us, and you a sinner through and through?’ But things are simple for the man who has experienced Jesus’ healing. He knows what he has witnessed, and is ready and willing to attest to it. “If this man were not from God,” he says, “he couldn’t do a thing.” He understands that his encounter with Jesus was extraordinary. Jesus finally clears up the confusion, turning everything on its head, as is often his way. It is the man who had been blind who sees who Jesus is: “Lord, I believe.” The Pharisees who think they see things clearly are the ones who are really blind to the truth. “We are not blind, surely?” is the question facing all of us as we advance through Lent. Are we open to the Good News and the healing power of Jesus? Tríona Doherty, Veritas

Killarney Legion march centre stage for top parade award Parade Awards By Eve Kelliher

WELL, it may be Dr Crokes’ week in sport, having notched the All-Ireland club title, but their fellow Killarney GAA club, Legion, took the spoils on home ground in the St Patrick’s Day parade awardon Tuesday night. Killarney Legion was presented with the overall award, the Sean O’Keeffe Perpetual Trophy. It was a case of standing room only at the awards ceremony in the International Hotel. The chairperson of the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney, Anne Marie Kennelly, congratulated all the winners as well as thanking all involved in the festival. “Despite the weather we had on the 17th you all came out and got your troops together and gave great entertainment,” Anne Marie told the gathering. The hard-working committee of Dermot Healy, Paul Sherry, Niall O’Donoghue, Fiona Crowley, David Rae, John Lenihan, Bernadette Randles and John Healy were also singled out for praise. “This year we innocently thought it would be very straightforward. ly and we also want to mention the Kilcoolaght Residents Association for getting behind us. We want to thank Killarney Municipal District under the leadership of Breda Mulryan and her team and Killarney Gardaí under the direction of Sergeant Dermot O’Connell.” The festival chairperson paid tribute to photographer Valerie O’Sullivan for capturing the big day on camera and for creating the parade’s unofficial mascots, the Gobnaits. Adventurers Get On Their Marks In Killarney By Valerie O’Sullivan RAIN most definitely failed to put any dampener on proceedings as a thousand competitors lined out for the Quest Adventure Killarney races. Despite testing conditions, the endurance of the athletes reigned supreme as they cycled along the most scenic ancient paths of Killarney National Park, through the famous Black Valley, where they ran a section of The Kerry Way, along Cummenduff Glen, through O’Sullivan’s Farm, the last house in the Valley. There followed a tough incline onto the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to Curraghmore Lake, before turning back to complete their trail run transition at Casey’s Farm yard, a final bike ride through the Black Valley, along the challenging Kenmare Road to the finishing line at The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney. Part of St Patrick’s Festival Killarney, the race included a 55km Expert challenge and a 33km and 28km event. Mark Nolan, powered through the landscape to win the overall race in an incredible new record time of 02:23:56, in second place was Michael Buckley in a time of 02:27:20, shaving a minute his time from last year. Third home was well known Cork, triathlete Mark Wolfe in a time of 02:30:04. Regina Sheehan was the First Lady home in the Expert 55km in an amazing time of 02:27:24. Second place was Ger Kelly, 03:04:06 Race organiser Oliver Kirwan from Quest Adventure said: “Records were broken, the weather was very challenging for the athletes. We witnessed magnificent racing on Saturday, but without the support of the residents of the Black Valley, staff at Killarney National park, The Gleneagle Hotel and local volunteers, the event could not happen. The atmosphere, good humour and banter among the athletes and hard working organisers added to the great success of the day. It’s all part of the Quest Adventure Experience” The next Quest Adventure Series in the diary is Quest Glendalough on April 8, 2017, Quest Achill September 9, 2017, and back to the Epic Quest Killarney October 1, 2017.

A Weekly Round-Up News + Views From Ke A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views FromOf Kerry And Around The World

‘Eamonn Casey made a bigger impact on life in Kerry than anybody since Daniel O’Connell’ Frank Lewis shares his memories of the late Eamonn Casey WHEN I think of Eamonn Casey I remember this dynamic man who had done trail-blazing work in providing houses in Britain and who was to go on to make a bigger impact on life in Kerry than anybody since Daniel O’Connell. I remember first being introduced to him in July 1969 in the town hall in Killarney by the chairman of Killarney UDC, Maurice O’Donoghue. Eamonn was told he needed my services as a PR consultant and I remember his invitation to come and talk. I also recall the Kerry Seminar Executive which under his leadership on four or five different occasions ran capacity seminars in ten centres around Diocese of Kerry. These seminars defeated the Buchanan plan to centralise Irish economic planning in six centres and informed on the pros and cons of joining Europe. There was also a seminar series on poverty and a seminar on Museum Services in Ireland. To help pay for all of that, the Bishop’s Concert in the Brandon was staged. It was a sellout on each occasion it was run, with the free services of Gay Byrne, Ronnie

Drew, Frank Patterson and Hal Roach and with cross-community support. All of that created a public who were informed. It resulted in the foundation of Siamsa Tire, The National Folk Theatre of Ireland. I also remember Eamonn Casey as the founding chairman of Trócaire and driving my Beetle to Caherciveen loaded with posters. Another memory springs to mind of Eamonn Casey following Bloody Sunday. I remember the Killarney parade and his passionate sermon in the Cathedral. Eamonn Casey wrote a major paper on housing in Ireland and I well remember the meticulous research and the passionate delivery. His revelling in ordinary people was another aspect of his character that made him stand out. I recall him singing with the drunk in a Dublin dining room, hugging the Moore Street trader and empathising on the death of a mother. Then, of course, there was the Full Life for Youth project scheme, in 1972 and 1975. It involved up to 2,500 young people in working on 200 projects that involved them with their com-

munities. All the projects were exhibited on both occasions in ten centres around the diocese. I remember the huge excitement at each one of the 2,500 being presented by Bishop Eamon with a colourful certificate with their name and the name of their project, signed by Eamonn Casey. There was extra concern and action for the old, studies that highlighted the uniqueness of life in small places – making indelible life-long impacts. I recall when he was transferred to Galway in 1976, facilitating and focusing the anger of the priests of Kerry at having his successor appointed while they were still being consulted. The sadness that we dropped the ball. The rigid worry when news broke that he had left the country, the regret that he did

not stand and put up his hands. But Eamonn Casey was still the person who made a bigger impact on life in Kerry than anybody since Daniel O’Connell. At a time when we need a vehicle to inform and stimulate us to create a truly participative democracy, make plans for our place, develop a vision for our communities. At a time when we need a vehicle to involve young people with their community. At a time when we need to appreciate the vital role of our story in enriching and enhancing our lives.... in bonding us with our place.... stimulating us to action. In the words of Eamon Casey himself: “A tree can’t stand without roots.”

‘All the millions in the world will not fix what happened’ THE High Court has approved a settlement of €15m in the case of a 10-year-old boy who was brain injured at birth. It brings to €17.8m the total awarded to Tadgh Costello from Killorglin, one of the highest awards on record. The money will be held and managed by the High Court on his behalf for what will be complex medical and care needs for the rest of his life. In emotional testimony to the High Court the boy’s mother, Mary, said “all the millions in the world would not fix” what had happened to her son. She told the judge the family was hap-

py if the court approved a lump sum award and managed it for their son because they had “reached the limit of endurance” in the long legal proceedings. She said: “These are not familiar surroundings and for any family that has a disabled child, you want to be at home with them, not here. It affects the whole family.” Tadgh needs 24-hour

care, cannot speak and is confined to a wheelchair. Through his mother, he had sued the Health Service Executive over the circumstances of his birth at Kerry General Hospital on May 25, 2006. The court heard there was a two-hour delay in delivering the baby in which he suffered brain damage.

It was claimed there was a failure to deliver him on time and to treat it as an emergency case. Two years ago the HSE apologised to the family after it reached an interim settlement for €2.8m. On that occasion his mother, said the apology had come too late. She said the HSE had fought the case for nine years before accepting liability. Ms Costello said her son’s health had improved significantly since the interim settlement two years ago because the money is being used for a range of therapies, including physiotherapy.

Kerry And Around The World

Inspired By Danny Casey

Turn a pair of binoculars on Jupiter For the last number of months, Venus had dominated the western sky after sunset. Now it is moving into the twilight on its journey around the Sun. In the evening sky, the planet Jupiter will dominate proceedings over the coming months, says Trevor O’Donoghue JUPITER, a gas giant consisting primarily of hydrogen and helium gases is the largest planet in our solar system with a diameter of almost 140,000km. These nights, Jupiter rises in the east shortly after eight o’clock and there is no mistaking it, as only the moon or Venus shines brighter in the night sky. It glows with a silvery

brilliance that is unmistakable. Turn a pair of binoculars on Jupiter and you can catch a glimpse of celestial mechanics in action. Jupiter is orbited by many moons, 67 at the last count, most of which are relatively small, but four are large and easily spotted in binoculars. These four moons are known as the Galilean Moons after Galileo’s discovery of them in 1610. In binoculars, the four moons are strung out on either side of the planet and appear as tiny dots of light. These four moons are worlds in their own right and range in diameter from 3,130 km to 5,268 km. One of the interesting things about these moons is that it is possible to spot them change position in the sky with respect to each other and to Jupiter.

Irish person was injured in Westminster attack

The moons take from between 1.75 to 17 days to orbit Jupiter and we see this edge on from Earth and so the moons seem to disappear and appear as they pass behind of and in front of Jupiter. You can notice them moving over the course of a few hours. At ten o’clock tonight, the 4 moons should be visible, but by 12.30 am one of the moons will pass behind Jupiter and so only three will be visible for a few hours. Pretty amazing to think that you can see this with a set of binoculars. Rest against a wall or tripod mount the binoculars to keep them steady Before these moons were discovered it was believed that the Earth was at the centre of the universe and that every other star and planet orbited it. Galileo’s observation of the orbiting moons of Jupiter helped us realise that the Earth is not the centre of the universe.

AN IRISH person was among those injured in Wednesday’s terror attack in Westminster. Speaking in the House of Commons on Thursday, British Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed one Irish person had been injured. Twelve British people, three French, two Romanians, four South Koreans, one German, one Chinese, one Italian and two Greeks were also injured in the attack. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, also confirmed that one Irish person was amongst those injured in the terrorist attack in London. Minister Flanagan said that his Department has, through the Irish Embassy in London, offered and stands ready to provide consular assistance. Four people were killed in the attack in Westminster on Wednesday. These were: Aysha Frade, 43; a man in his mid 50s, PC Keith Palmer and the attacker; Twenty-nine people were treated for their injuries in hospital, including one Irish person; seven of these are critically ill; numbers of “walking wounded” are still being collated. Eight people have been arrested in raids at six addresses in connection with the investigation. The raids took place in London, Birmingham and at other, undisclosed, locations. Metropolitan Police say the attacker acted alone, but was “inspired by international terrorism”. British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said the working assumption is that the Westminster attack is linked to Islamic terrorism.

Celebrations As Dr Crokes Are Crowned All-Ireland Club Champions

Dream Comes True For Amy And Dr Crokes By Eve Kelliher

DR CROKES not only realised their ambition of a 2017 All-Ireland club triumph in Croke Park last Friday, but the club also made dreams come true for one of its younger members, Amy O’Connor. In a gesture by the club that showed its sense of family and community spirit, Dr Crokes captain Johnny Buckley invited the delighted 10-year-old to help him raise the Andy Merrigan Cup. In the past week, Dr Crokes tweeted a video from Amy's father Brendan, thanking the club for the gesture and for the "daily dose of inspiration". Club chairman Denis Coleman told Killarney Advertiser: “Brendan and Amy have been with us at the club for a long time. The O’Connors are a family within the family that is Dr Crokes.” The message in the video reads as follows: "When you're dealing with cancer, a daily dose of inspiration can make a big difference in your outlook on life during your cancer journey. Being around people who inspire, challenge, and make you feel better helps bring perspective and optimism to the situation. “So thanks to all at Dr Crokes for making Amy feel so special on such a big day for the club." The video shows pictures of Amy, including shots of the 10-year-old lining out for the club, and also highlights her battle with cancer. In its tweet, Dr Crokes described Amy as “an inspiration for the club” and the "toughest little girl we know". Amy is the daughter of Triona and Brendan O’Connor.

Home Are The Heroes By Eve Kelliher

THERE were scenes of utter joy on the streets of Killarney as the town welcomed home the jubilant Dr Crokes team and manager Pat O’Shea on Saturday evening. Winning the Andy Merrigan Cup after a 25-year wait gave a sense of completion to the club – not least Colm Cooper for whom the All-Ireland Senior Club medal was the missing piece of the jigsaw. The emotional scenes all along the homecoming parade route from the club grounds at Lewis Road down through the town and to the High Street car park echoed those in Croke

Park. “The whole experience was an outpouring of relief and of emotion,” club chairman Denis Coleman told Killarney Advertiser. “I think there were very few people who didn’t have a tear in their eye at the end of the game. It was a special day for everyone there, for many different reasons.” The game was one that held generations spellbound, not least the key players. The 2017 captain Johnny Buckley enjoyed the 1992 victory scenes from the shoulders of his father, Mike, a 1992 player-turned-selector with the

current team. “We have won plenty over the past few years but have also had our disappointments losing three All-Ireland semi-finals in a row,” said Johnny. “To go back now and win it is absolutely fantastic and my father cannot hold it over me anymore that the Andy Merrigan was missing from the cabinet! I would also like to say a sincere thank you to the many well-wishers and thank particularly the schools for the fantastic reception that we got when bringing in the cup this week.” Vincent Casey, who lined out in the same full-forward position in 1992

that his nephew Daithi Casey occupied on St Patrick’s Day 2017, said: “Last Friday was a fantastic day for the club and particularly for this team who have been together for the past 10 years. “The win last Friday unquestionably makes them the greatest team ever in the history of the club, having now added the All-Ireland trophy to the five county championships and four Munster championships along with numerous other trophies. It is a just reward for the commitment and dedication that they have given over the past number of years.”

Killarney Advertiser’s resident cartoonist Martin Carey gives his take on familiar faces and places

Grace Notes

Know your audience The sad truth about being a performer is that you never know how many people will be in your audience, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

YOU can prepare as much as possible but you cannot guarantee bums on seats. The most important thing for the performer to remember is that we must always give completely of ourselves, no matter how many people are in the audience. While it can be a little disheartening to see empty seats, it is also be very encouraging to see those familiar faces in the crowd. They are the faces of the people who would come out to see and hear you perform come hail, rain or snow. Those people make performing worthwhile. We often hear of famous people who paved their way to the top by performing in near-empty venues, playing to just a handful of people. In the business we would call this 'honing your craft'. The more I perform, the more I understand this. I think we find that vital connection with the audience on the nights that we sing to the

familiar faces. We no longer see a division between "us and them", we see that the performance includes everyone in the room. I think the most well known people in the music business are the people who the audience feel a connection with. We as an audience need to feel that we know these performers as people. I always tell my students to be as human as you can when you perform. If we try to create the perfect persona and berate ourselves for every mistakes, we will lose the magic. This magic comes to life when one human stands in front of a bunch of other humans and shares their talent and their story, even if they are feeling scared and vulnerable. We must get into the character of each piece of music so the audience are taken on a journey with us. This journey can transport us from a room of either full or empty seats and take us somewhere where time stands still. I encourage all performers to get to know your audience. They are your family now. •

MURPHY CUP

By Eve Kelliher IRELAND’S longest “skywalk rope bridge” has been introduced along the Ring of Kerry. This new visitor attraction, at Kells Bay House & Gardens, is poised to further boost visitor numbers in the county. Kells Bay House & Gardens is renowned worldwide as the breath-taking tropical jewel on the Ring of Kerry and it is about to become even more popular with the opening of Ireland’s longest rope bridge. Five months’ work at Kells Bay House & Gardens culminates in the opening within the next fortnight of the aptly named ‘The Skywalk’ visitor attraction. The Skywalk rope bridge spans 112 feet and has been erected over the stunning Delligeenagh River at a height of approximately 36 feet.

It will be a major boost to the site which already attracts 10,000 plus visitors annually and provides up to 10 jobs in the local community at peak times. It is hoped that visitor numbers will exceed 15,000 with the addition of the Skywalk. It will be officially opened on April 7 by Sir Tim Smit, famous for his work with The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the world-renowned Eden Project in the UK, and opens to the public the following day, April 8. Owners Billy and Penn Alexander say the inspiration for The Skywalk came from trips they made to the rainforest and jungle plant exploration over several years. Similar constructions are popular throughout South-East Asia where this type of bridge is often referred to as a Burmese Rope Bridge, Billy Alexander explained.

Rev up for grand unveiling of vintage Massey Ferguson THE Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club was very busy this past winter restoring a 1968 Massey Ferguson MF135 tractor. Spring has seen the tractor restored to its former glory and the club invites the public to witness its unveiling on Saturday, April 1, at 6pm in the Killarney Men’s Shed. Tom Leslie, club chairperson, said: “We are delighted with how the tractor has turned out and would especially like to thank everyone who got involved with the restoration project. “So many people helped out, from the sponsors to the club members who gave up their time each week to work on the project over the last few months.”

Tom paid tribute to Killarney Men’s Shed and Kerry Mental Health Association for the generous use of their facilities and all the club committee members, especially the project managers, Bernard O'Sullivan and Thomas Wharton. The proceeds will be divided between the four chosen charities of the South Kerry Ploughing Championships & Harvest Show, Down Syndrome Kerry, The Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Kerry/ Cork Health Link Bus and Kerry Branch of the Irish Kidney Association which takes place at Flemings Farm, Fossa, on Sunday, September 3. For further information, contact 087-3381842, visit the club website www.killarneyvintage. com

Garden Magic Despite the cold weather we have just experienced, gardeners everywhere are out mowing, fertilising and, unfortunately, weeding again, says Debby Looney

Potatoes Are An Easy Crop To Grow GROWTH is really starting now, and if you are still considering bare rooted hedging or trees, time is almost up. One plant which is looking good at the moment is Pulsatilla, or Pasque flower. A beautiful small perennial, with soft hairy leaves and delicate purple flowers, it is always a delight to see it come up in the rockery. Pieris varieties are also flowering now, just before they will get their fiery new shoots. It is worthwhile keeping an eye on the weather forecast so you can protect them if it is frosty. In my garden the fragrant Viburnum carlesii has just started flowering. A lot of gardeners are planting potatoes now, and, indeed, March is a good time to plant first earlies such as “Red Duke of York”, “Sharpe’s Express” and “Orla”. These benefit from “chitting”, which is a process whereby you are allowing the potato to start growing prior to planting. Place your seed potatoes in

a tray or egg carton and let them sprout in a bright frost-free place. Second earlies also benefit from this – some varieties are “”British Queen”, “Charlotte” and “Nicola”. Main crop potatoes can be planted from March to May, and include “Cara”, “Kerr’s Pink” and “Maris Piper”. Potatoes are a relatively easy crop to grow, and especially rewarding for children to try. The main disease which affects them is blight. There are some remedies, and preventative measures such as Bordeaux mixture, which is a copper sulphate and lime mixture. An organic option, which has been proven effective, is Horsetail tea. The organic brand, Neudorff, include it in their range, but you can also make it at home. Simply put a kilo of Horsetail greens into 20 litres of rainwater, cover and stir regularly. It is ready to use after 3-4 weeks, mixed one part tea to ten parts water in your sprayer. (It is also effective for powdery mildew and blackspot on roses!).

New Era F1 Kicks Off This Weekend THE waiting is over, the 2017 F1 season kicks off this weekend in Melbourne. Friday practice will be the first indicator of pace after the poker hands of testing in Barcelona; Saturday’s qualifying will be cards on the table time to discover who can turn any pace into a hot lap. Race day is crunch time for the teams but this year, with new regulations, it is also going to be a huge moment for the sport. A new start with the biggest change in regulations in years, new owners and no sign of Bernie Ecclestone on the grid, a new era afoot. Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vet-

Meeke And Nagle’s Mexican Drama Is Good News For The Sport

tel will duke it out for an early lead in the race for the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship in this weekend’s opener. Hamilton's Mercedes and Vettel's Ferrari will be the teams setting the pace this year, at least if pre-season testing is anything to go by. After the absolute dominance by Mercedes last year, it was a straight shootout between Hamilton and eventual winner Nico Rosberg for the crown. However after very positive pre-season lap times by Ferrari, we'll find out just how competitive they are this weekend. KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle didn't just turn their 2017 WRC season around by winning in Mexico, they also did the sport a huge favour with their last-stage near-disaster. The last two minutes of Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle's Rally Mexico saw real raw emotion. A 37-second lead into the final stage and their first 2017 victory appeared to be slipping away with only a few corners to go. YouTube footage of the in-car and aerial clips show the heart-stopping drama unfolding. (Search:

Mexico Meeke on-board and Mexico Meeke final stage). Meeke and Nagle have done their bit to sell the excitement of WRC to a wider audience. The whole world saw what they did in Mexico. It even made the media's mainstream of BBC Breakfast. And it looks like they are going to contribute more to the 2017 WRC spectacle too. Putting aside the nightmares of Monte Carlo and Sweden, they found form in the gravel of Mexico. The next six rounds, five are on gravel. Let the championship begin.

Put Your Money Into Classic Cars FOR the most part, classic cars are a terrifying reminder that their drum brakes only sometimes work and most of the time their wipers don't. But their visual and cultural connotations make them one of the world's most compelling alternative asset class. More so when you consider that they consistently provide better returns than other traditional asset classes, as well as more unusual investments. According to the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, wine, for example, offers investors a 3% return over 12 months. Watches, 4%. Coins, 10%. Classic

cars? Twenty-eight per cent. This is not restricted to the high-end marques, with a good eye entry level won't break the bank. However patience is where these investments pay off. Even in the last 12 months the market's shown growth of eight per cent and 179% over a ten-year period. That outperforms the FTSE 100 by a comfortable margin. Time to put the brakes on conventional investments and start searching for the next future classic car. Ant the process can be fun along the way.

THE 2017 Eamonn Kelly bursary recipient was announced at a presentation at Killarney Library on Tuesday. The recipient this year is talented thespian Margaret O’Sullivan, an actor from Rathmore. Margaret intends to develop her practice by attending a number of specialised theatre training courses in Dublin and Cork. “I am overwhelmed by the award and am really looking forward to attending the courses that this grant will fund,” said Margaret. “It’s all about bringing this knowledge back home to Kerry, it reaffirms my path as an actor and helps me to progress my career as well as hopefully mentor and inspire others.” The Eamon Kelly bursary is funded by Kerry County Council and aims to support arts development in the Killarney Municipal District. The bursary has been in existence for over 10 years and continues to

support arts development, encouraging high standards of arts practice in music, song, dance, film, drama and visual arts. The bursary honours the memory of Eamon Kelly, the actor and seanchaí, whose village of Gneeveguilla is included in the Killarney Municipal District. His sister, Bríd Sugrue said: “It was entirely fitting that the award went to an actor and Eamon would have been delighted to see the arts supported in his name.” The cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Cronin, presented the award. Councillor Michael Gleeson and the Killarney Arts Working Group members Aidan Reidy, Val Moynihan and Mary Murphy were also present. Chairman of the Killarney Arts Working Group Cllr John Joe Culloty said: “We will continue to ensure the Eamon Kelly Bursary remains part of the core arts support with Kerry County Council.”

RECIPE OF THE WEEK COD IN SALT CRUST Killarney Park Hotel head chef Heiko Riebandt shares his recipe for a delectable fish dish

INGREDIENTS

2kg cod 1 piece lemon 2 branches thyme 2 branches flat parsley 1 crushed clove garlic Salt crust: 3kg sea salt, fine 2kg sea salt, coarse 50g flour 5 piece egg white

METHOD

ASK your fish supplier to gut and cut away the fins but leave the head on. Open the fish and place the herbs inside and season with black pepper. For the salt crust, mix all ingredients in a big bowl. Add flour if it is too liquidy and if it is too brittle add some water and let it rest for 7-10 minutes. Take a small piece of the crust and flatten it. Put it into the preheated oven. If it is too brittle add more egg white. Heat the oven to 180C. Make a finger-thick layer of the salt crust on the bottom of baking tray and place the fish on it. Cover with the rest of the crust. Place the fish in the middle of the oven for 25 minutes, or if it is bigger add one minutes per 100g, opposite if it is smaller. To serve, break the crust with a knife at the edges and take the whole top part off. Serve with potatoes and salad dressing.

PRAYER TO THE VIRGIN MARY

We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore; We did our best to the end, ‘Til we could do no more. In tears we watched you sinking, We watched you fade away; And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay. You left behind some aching hearts, That loved you most sincere; We never shall and never will Forget you Mommy dear.

Remember, Oh most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought they intercession was left unaided, inspired by this confidence I fly to thee Oh Virgin of Virgins my Mother, to thee do I come, before thee I stand sinful and sorrowful. Oh Mother of the word incarnate despise not my petition but in thy clemency hear and answer me. Amen. AOR

Loved and missed every day By your beloved children, Sharon, Alan, Melissa, Annmaire And their partners & your loving grandchildren. Xxx

World-Class Healthcare –

The Children Of Ireland Deserve No Less WE REFER to the letter “Concern at Sitting of new children's hospital” published in this paper on February 24, 2017. As clinicians responsible for delivering secondary and tertiary paediatric and neonatal healthcare, our number one priority is providing the best possible care to our patients. We fully support the new children’s hospital on a campus shared with St James’s Hospital and we are working towards the delivery of healthcare services on this single academic medical campus which will provide paediatric, adult and maternity services. The delivery of these services side by side, on a research-intensive campus, will benefit all of our patients, but in particular will drive improved clinical outcomes for the sickest children, adolescents, new-borns and high risk mothers. This “tri-location” model of healthcare delivery is recognised as best practice internationally and, as clinicians, we are greatly excited about the bringing together of our services on one campus. The decision to locate the new children’s hospital on a campus shared with St James’s Hospital, Ireland’s leading tertiary adult research intensive hospital, was made in 2012 and the hospital will be completed in 2021. It was also confirmed in the National Maternity Strategy published last year that the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital will relocate to the same campus. Working side by side, we are estab-

lishing a campus of healthcare excellence that will be amongst the best in the world. Our sickest children, adolescents, neonates and mothers deserve no less. Call for ban on ‘super trawlers’ AS A Kerry county councillor I am calling on Michael Creed, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the Government, to make every effort to ban, as a matter of extreme urgency, “super trawlers” fishing in Irish waters, before it is too late and they completely wipe out our Fish Stocks and Coastal Communities. I raised the matter at a recent meeting of the South and West Kerry Municipal District as these massive super trawlers are raping our waters of our fish stocks and in doing so are wiping out

our coastal communities along the Kerry and Irish coastline. This has and is costing hundreds of people here in Kerry and in other coastal counties, their jobs and their livelihoods and it has to stop now before it is too late. These factory ships are depriving people here at home, a livelihood. Following my motion, it was agreed that Kerry County Council would write to the Minister and the Government in respect of the matter. Councillor Michael Cahill, Rossbeigh

Kerry delegation visits Tourism Ireland in New York REPRESENTATIVES of Kerry County Council, who were in New York for the St Patrick’s Day period, met with senior executives from Tourism Ireland in New York last Thursday. They were briefed on Tourism Ireland’s extensive promotional programme for 2017, which is in full swing right now. Tourism Ireland aims to build on the success of 2016, which was the fourth record-breaking year in a row for Irish tourism from the United States. Tourism Ireland is prioritising North America this year, as a market which offers a strong return on investment, in terms of holiday visitors and expenditure. Our important “culturally curious” and “social energiser” audiences are being targeted with distinctive vacation experiences, events and special offers tailored to their interests. In the US, Tourism Ireland is highlighting experiences like the Wild Atlantic Way, the Causeway Coastal Route and Ireland’s Ancient East. Promotions aim to grow travel to the regions of Ireland, during the shoulder and off-peak seasons. With the recent announce-

ment by Norwegian of new flights to Ireland from New York (Stewart International Airport) and Providence (Rhode Island), the total number of transatlantic airline seats this summer will be 60,000, from 20 North American gateways to the island of Ireland – that’s 10,000 additional seats (+20%) compared to summer 2016. We were delighted to meet with the representatives of Kerry County Council and to have the opportunity to brief them about the extensive promotional programme we are undertaking in the United States this year. Our ambition is to surpass the record-breaking performance of 2016 and

to deliver a +9% increase in revenue and a +6% increase in visitor numbers from North America in 2017 i.e. €1.6 billion generated by 1.7 million visitors. St Patrick’s Day traditionally marks the real start of the tourism season for us; our aim is to bring a smile to the faces of people everywhere and to convey the message that Ireland offers the warmest of welcomes and great fun, as well as wonderful scenery and heritage. Long Wait Finally Over For The Crokes The Andy Merrigan Cup is back in Killarney and Pat O’Shea’s side are deserving champions, writes Adam Moynihan IT WAS a long time coming but for the Crokes supporters who made the journey to Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day, it was well worth the wait. At the end of very tense and, at times, cagey final, the Black and Amber sealed their second All-Ireland Club Championship title with a twopoint victory over Ulster champions Slaughtneil. The opening stages were fairly tight and the Derry men were leading 3-2 with 11 minutes on the clock when the game’s first major chance fell to one of Crokes’ players of the year. Prodigious defender Gavin White made a typically incisive solo run straight through the heart of the Slaughtneil defence and had the goal at his mercy. You would have had your house on him finding the bottom corner but he pulled his shot wide, and that miss looked even more crucial when Pádraig Cassidy went up the other end and walked in the game’s opening goal. When the Slaughtneil extended their lead to four midway through the half the game was in danger of getting away from the Crokes, but they were dragged back into contention by two of their big hitters shortly after. Daithí Casey picked the ball up from deep and, just like he did against Corofin in the semi-final, he took off for goal. Casey is undoubtedly one of the best runners with the ball in the county and although he lost the handle at the end of this particular foray, he still managed to

divert the ball into the path of Colm Cooper. Cooper coolly applied the finish and it was game on once again. The remainder of the period was nip and tuck, Brian Looney impressing more than most with three superb points from play.

"Crokes will be

hoping this is the start of a new chapter rather than the end of an old one"

Without question the game’s biggest talking point came in time added on at the end of the first half. Slaughtneil’s goalscorer Cassidy had what can only be described as a moment of madness, striking out at Kieran O’Leary by the sideline and earning himself a straight red card. This obviously had a huge impact on the shape of the game in the second half, although strangely enough it might have actually made Crokes a bit more

conservative than they would have otherwise been. We’ve become accustomed to seeing this Crokes outfit putting teams to the sword but against the 14 men they were content with keeping possession and seeing the game out. In the end, after so many near misses down through the years, it didn’t really matter how they got over the line. Players and management deserve a huge amount of credit for getting the job done. For me, the likes of Shane Murphy, John Payne, Gavin

Killarney Advertiser’s Eamonn Is Definitely On The Ball OUR On The Ball columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald was, as the title of his popular column suggests, literally on the ball when he predicted both winners in Croke Park. Eamonn featured in Killarney Advertiser’s Smalltalk in the lead-up to the All-Ireland Club Finals in Croke Park and his prediction of All-Ireland successes for Dr Crokes and Cuala came true. “That should make Des Cahill happy after his elimination from Dancing with the Stars on Sunday night last,” said Eamonn. “Des played with Dr Crokes when he worked as a staff reporter with The Kerryman in Killarney and

he was also chairman of his home club Cuala when he went to RTÉ Sport.” Also in Smalltalk, Eamonn Fitzgerald singled out Payno (John Payne) as the most underrated player in the Crokes team. Payno went on to win the RTÉ Man of the match award in the All Ireland final on Friday. Answering the question as to who he believed was Crokes’ most underrated player, Eamonn said: “Payno, the small man with the big heart. Consistency personified. He has never left the Crokes down.”

White, Daithí Casey, Kieran O’Leary and obviously Gooch had sensational years, and with major contributions from older heads and future stars alike the group managed to live up to the hype and end the 25-year wait. It’ll be interesting to see how similar or otherwise their next championship line-up will be to last week’s team, but with a lot of young talent already in the squad and a good batch of minors on the way, Crokes will be hoping this is the start of a new chapter rather than the end of an old one.

Dr Crokes Are Crowned All-Ireland Club Champions

Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on Dr Crokes’ St Patrick’s Day victory Dr Crokes 1-9 Slaughtneil 1-7 VENI, vidi, vici. Yes indeed, Dr Crokes breathed a massive collective sigh of relief on St Patrick’s Day in Croke Park, where the defeated Slaughtneil in the All Ireland SFC club final with just 2 points to spare, 1-9 to 1-7. This was their second title and it was a long 25 years since they won their first way back in 1992. They become the first Kerry club to win two such titles. Kerry’s other winners were East Kerry (1971), Austin Stacks (1972), Castleisland Desmonds (1985) and Laune Rangers (1996). The first half was very exciting but the quality of play in the second half was very poor as Slaughtneil laboured with 14 men; the turning point of the game came just before half time when Slaughtneil’s influential Padraig Cassidy got a straight red card for punching Kieran O’Leary in full view of the referee on the Hogan Stand side of the field. This rash and unprovoked incident turned the tide in Crokes favour. However, they didn’t have it all their own way as the Derry men battled bravely before yielding to the Crokes. IMPRESSIVE BRIAN LOONEY Dr Crokes started poorly and trailed by two points before the very impressive Brian Looney hit the first of his three very valuable points from play. In the 11th minute Gavin White set off on a 60-metre dash through the opposition’s defence, but his finish was very poor especially with Gooch free to take the pass .The influential midfielder Padraig Cassidy worked his way through the middle of the Crokes defence to score a 15th minute goal. A trademark lungbursting run by the impressive Dáithí Casey was clinically finished when Cooper planted the ball out of the reach of Antoin McMullan in the 21st minute. Prior to this Slaughtneil had gone four points clear, before Gooch began the reeling-in process. DOWN TO 14 MEN Slaughtneil faced the second half playing in to the Hill 16 end a man down and a point in arrears, still they refused to surrender, typical of the northern teams. Crokes stuck to their game plan and kept in front. They were aided by astute

moves from the bench with Micheál Burns and Jordan Kiely impressing. In the final 10 minutes of the game Crokes held possession content to hold on to their lead. In that period Slaughtneil had possession for a mere 52 seconds while Crokes passed the ball across the field. This was orchestrated by Colm Cooper who sensed that the time had come to claim that elusive All Ireland club medal. He was not going to be denied. What a great reward for Eoin Brosnan and Colm Cooper two of the longest-serving members of Dr Crokes, who had suffered painful defeats in 2007 and in those awful semi-final defeats to Crossmaglen, Ballymun Kickhams and Castlebar Mitchels. AGONISING DEFEATS Last Friday’s win and those agonising defeats were put in context by captain fantastic Johnny Buckley, manager Pat O’Shea and Denis Coleman the club chairman at the victory lunch in the Dromhall on Saturday last. They pointed out that Crokes had often played better games, but still lost. They were loud in their praise of the lady members of the events committee who cooked a fresh hot dinner for all the players at the end of each training session. In a powerfully emotional speech bainisteoir Pat O'Shea put the win in context of what it means to be a true clubman for Dr Crokes. He was very grateful for the unstinting service for the past 15 months by dedicated Crokes men and women. See backroom teams below. DR CROKES The team was as follows: S Murphy; J Payne, M Moloney, L Quinn; D O’Leary, G White, F Fitzgerald; A O’Donovan, J Buckley (capt); A O’Sullivan, G O’Shea, B Looney (0-3); C Cooper (1-2, two frees), D Casey (0-3, two frees), K O’Leary; subs: M Burn (01) for O’Sullivan, J Kiely for O’Shea (both 40 mins), S Doolan for D. O Leary, T Brosnan for Looney (58 mins), E Brosnan for Casey, C Brady for O’Leary (both 63 mins). The extended panel of 33 players included A. Kelly, M. Milner, C. Fitzgerald, and PJ. Lawlor, J. Doolan, B O Shea, J. Lyne, P Clarke, A Kenneally, J O Leary, M. Egan, D Naughton. BACKROOM TEAMS The Dr Crokes backroom management team was Pat O’Shea (bainisteoir), Harry O’Neill, Eddie O’Sullivan, Niall O’Callaghan and Mike Buckley

RECORD BUSTERS! That’s the new moniker for Joe Schmidt’s men in green. What another weekend for the rugby fans as England came to town looking to secure the Grandslam and probably just as important for the men in white, a record breaking 19 wins in a row. Eddie Jones was up to his usual mind games earlier on in the week, playing down the significance of the trip to Dublin on St Patrick’s weekend. However, as happened to the All Blacks last November when they were looking to set the new record of 19 wins, Ireland decided to work from another script. The match at Soldier Field, Chicago will go down in history, however last Saturday in the Aviva will be right up there also. Joe Schmidt has received some criticism for not making changes and for sticking to household names as opposed to ringing the changes. However, his hand was forced this week as Rob Kearney lost out to injury. He would have preferred to have Conor Murray playing and a last minute withdrawal of Jamie Heaslip meant that Munster stalwart Peter O’Mahony started. A cracking match finally kicked off, delayed due to the questionable refereeing of the France V Wales game, forcing the match into 20 minutes of extra time. Ireland’s Johnny Sexton opened the scoring with a penalty, and traded penalties with Owen Farrell. Iain Henderson managed to break the visitors defence for the solitary try in the game to see Ireland run out winners on a 13-9 score line. The atmosphere was truly electric and Peter O’Mahony put in a world-class display, which earned him the man of the match award. The men in green well and truly upset the visitors and ended the historic win run. This display will give British and Lions Head Coach Warren Gatland lot to think about ahead of the team announcement on April 19.

It was complemented by the massive effort and dedication to a myriad of duties carried out by “oibreoirí cúnta” Stephen Brosnan, Seamus O’Doherty, Vince Casey, Matthew Courtney, the ladies dinner providers, also Brian O’Callaghan and John C O Shea. FOCAL SCOIR “We have to win an other All Ireland for the club while Eoin (Brosnan) and Gooch are starring with us, otherwise it will take a long time to put together a team good enough to win the All Ireland club. These are the men to lead us to the Promised Land, just like Seanie’s (O’Shea) team did in ’92.” How often did the late Paddy Bomber O’Shea say these prophetic words to me over the past few years. They all came back to me as I witnessed Johnny Buckley raise the Andy Merrigan Cup on the victory podium. Where else would you want to be on St Patrick’s Day? FOOTNOTE The current trophy is the Andy Merrigan Cup, named after a footballer who played for Castletown and Wexford. He died as a result of a farm accident at the height of his playing career. It was first presented in 1974. JUVENILE HURLING John Linehan reminds us that there has been a great response to the juvenile hurling academy every Saturday in DR Crokes pitch, Lewis RD. There are still a few places left for Under 6, 8 and 10s. Qualified coaches, free admission and all hurling gear supplied. Enquiries to Gene 086-1720789 or to Mike on 087-2735193.

Dr Crokes' Dream Team Sports columnist Adam Moynihan pays tribute to the 2017 All-Ireland Senior Club Championship winning Crokes team

1 – Shane Murphy

Murphy has been a revelation between the sticks since joining the Crokes last year. The best striker of a football in Kerry, he’s also an excellent shot-stopper and shows great composure in possession. He has been integral to his side’s success over the past twelve months and, in spite of fierce competition for the No. 1 jersey, he could be set for big things at inter-county level.

2 – John Payne

footballer, constantly playing on the edge defensively while always remaining thrifty in possession.

8 – Ambrose O’Donovan

One of the older heads on this panel but still a hugely important enforcer around the middle third, Ambrose will be hard to replace whenever he decides to call it a day. Down through the years he has always turned it on when needed and he played a big part again in the final.

Although he has always been a consistent performer, Payno has reached another level over the course of this Club Championship run. He was outstanding against Corofin and deservedly picked up the Man of the Match award in last week’s final. It’s a testament to his brilliant attitude and elite-level athleticism that he could well be Crokes’ Player of the Year, even with a host of what you might call more technically skilful footballers in contention.

9 – Alan O’Sullivan

3 – Michael Moloney

A well-liked and well-respected captain, Buckley was without question one of his side’s most important players towards the business end of the season. With his size and unique skillset, he has the ability to fill a number of roles and was often responsible for both winning difficult ball and initiating dangerous attacks.

As dedicated as any senior footballer around, Smiler has seen it all with the Crokes and this All-Ireland is a great reward for his years of service to the Black and Amber. His application is second to none and at 29 he still has a lot to offer.

4 – Luke Quinn

Quinn did well when called upon to replace the unfortunate Eoin Brosnan for the semi-final and deservedly kept his place for the Slaughtneil game, where he again impressed. Another veteran defender, he used all of his years of experience to help the Crokes get over the line.

5 – David O’Leary

The fact that Buddy has been an ever-present throughout the Club Championship shows how highly-regarded he is within the set-up. Very athletic, tough-tackling and comfortable on the ball, he manages to maintain a high level of intensity that fits in perfectly with the Crokes’ style of play.

6 – Gavin White

It has been an incredible twelve months or so for Gavin White. It’s difficult to recall a player who has graduated from rookie to key player so quickly, especially for such a successful team. Playing with confidence and intelligence beyond his years, White is already one of Crokes’ best players and could easily line out for Kerry in this year’s championship.

7 – Fionn Fitzgerald

He may be an inter-county calibre player but even at club level Fionn very much operates within the team. Along with Gooch he’s probably Crokes’ most intelligent

O’Sullivan must have been disappointed when he was taken off in the County Final but he showed great character to come back and retain his position thereafter, helping Ambrose and Eoin Brosnan to provide a physical presence to Crokes’ defensive efforts that would have otherwise been wanting.

10 – Johnny Buckley

11 – Gavin O’Shea

A few eyebrows were raised when O’Shea was selected at centre forward at the beginning of last season. Although no one really questioned his talent, the general consensus was that he was probably too light to play on the forty. Turns out he wasn’t. He more than held his own and made several valuable contributions, operating with a “pass first” mentality that allowed his teammates to get a steady supply of good possession.

12 – Brian Looney

Looney has always been a man for the big occasion and he proved it again in Croke Park last week as he racked up three points from play in the first half. It was a typically eye-catching performance in a big game by Looney; he kicked four points against Kenmare District in last year’s Kerry decider and has been Man of the Match in fair number of finals over the course of the last decade or so.

13 – Colm Cooper

Gooch had a superb year so it was nice to see him get 1-2 against Slaughtneil and finally win the one trophy he was yet to get his hands on. I suppose there’s a chance we might not see him grace Croke Park again which is a sad thought for Kerry supporters - but, if that is the case, last week’s final was

a great way to sign off.

14 – Daithí Casey

Undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of the puzzle, Casey’s performances throughout the campaign and since the county final in particular have been immense. His hat-trick in the Munster final will live long in the memory, as will his crucial assists for Jordan Kiely against Corofin and for Gooch against Slaughtneil.

15 – Kieran O’Leary

Although he might not have lit up the final in the way he would have liked, Leary still played a big part in the victory and earlier exhibitions, not least the one he put on in the first half of the semi-final, proved how deadly he can still be against even the most formidable of opponents.

Subs: Eoin Brosnan

A calf injury cruelly ruled Brosnan out of both the semi-final and final. Physically he was big loss but his teammates managed to get the job done without him, and after all the years he’s given to the club he’s a deserving All-Ireland champion.

Shane Doolan

Injury also hampered skilful half-back Doolan last season but he recovered in time to play a role against Corofin and Slaughtneil.

Jordan Kiely

Made a telling contribution against Corofin with a well-taken goal and has looked lively whenever he has been given a chance.

Micheál Burns

Another young talent with a bright future, he kicked a big score at a crucial time in the final.

Tony Brosnan

Brosnan was Crokes’ top scorer in the championship up to the county final but has found his opportunities limited since. Very dangerous on his day.

Chris Brady

Yet another talented young forward. Like Kiely, Burns and Brosnan, he’ll be hoping to play more this year.

Manager: Pat O’Shea

Held in the highest possible regard by his players, O’Shea managed to get everyone to buy into the system and the set-up from day one. To a man they were at it from the outset, putting teams to the sword in the league and finding very little resistance in the County Championship. The one blip was the defeat to Rathmore in the O’Donoghue Cup but as soon as they got out of Kerry, no team really came close to stopping them.

Gneeveguilla Basketball Club BOYS U16 DIV 1. St. Mary’s 49 – Gneeveguilla 48 This was the final game of the 2016/17 league, The home side Mary’s got off to a lightening start and were up 6 to 0 within a few minutes and extended their lead to 12 – 0 with Garry O’Sullivan scoring 8, Joe Sheehy 4 and Daniel Kelly finished the quarter with a 3 pointer. Before the quarter ended Gneeveguilla got on the score board with a basket each from David Gleason and Ronan Collins. The score was 15 – 4 at the end of first quarter. The second quarter was to be the highest scoring of the game, with end to end action and Gneeveguilla hitting a scoring patch. The halftime score was 33 – 30 with the home side still leading. Gneeveguilla hit 4 three pointers in this quarter with two in a row early from Paul O’Leary giving the away side some badly needed momentum, Ronan Collins and Lorcan Keane added one each. Also on target was Jack Brosnan, David Gleason and Charlie Collins contributing to the 26 points scored. Mary’s also scored 18 points in this quarter with 5 from the free through line, a three pointer from Joe Sheehy and baskets from Daniel Kelly, Tadhg O’Shea and Donal Geaney. In the third quarter the momentum swung back to Mary’s, extending their lead to 7 by the end , but a fierce battle was still to be fought. With an assist from Patrick Brosnan, Ronan Collins open the scoring in the fourth with a 2 pointer, Garry O’Sullivan pulled back the 7 point lead from the free through line. Ronan then hit a 3 pointer to close it to 4 but Tadhg O’Shea re-

sponded with a well worked basket leaving 6 between the teams. Then up stepped Lorcan Keane with a 3 pointer from the left and followed in the next attack with another from the right drawing the game with a minute on the clock. Daniel Kelly then scored one of his free shots to edge the home side to the narrowest of victory’s. This put both teams level on points at the top of the table, so the Kerry Area Basketball Rules needed to be referred to, Gneeveguilla won earlier in the season on a score line of 53 – 51 (2 point victory) and with Mary’s only winning here by 1 point, the U16 Div 1 Boys title goes to Gneeveguilla.

Killarney Athletic FC RESULTS U14 Our u14s played away in Fenit in very windy conditions on Saturday. Athletic fell behind when the ball was well cleared from a corner & a well struck shot from distance aided by the wind found the bottom corner. Fenits second came from a well struck free kick, after foul on the edge of the box. Athletics best chance came when Mulvanney did great work down the right forcing a cross in which the keeper fumbled, O’Sullivan attacked the ball & the keeper made the save after a questionable tackle on O’Sullivan was waved away. 2-0 down at the break, the game was still wide open. Athletic had joy early on playing the ball fast over the top for the strikers to run onto. Disaster struck soon after, when Athletic failed to clear from a corner & the ball fell kindly to the Fenit player who finished well. The lads got one back when Rocco beat three defenders on the edge of the box and finished smartly to the net. Pressing now Athletic got hit with two sucker punches, from dubious offside decisions as Fenit secured the game. Best for Athletic were Doolan, Pierce & Mulvanney. 300 CLUB It is still not too late to sign up for the 300 club draw with the club offering the reduced rate of €100 for the remaining 10 draws of the year. Forms can be got from any committee member and we would ask all members to support. Dr Crokes GAA ALL IRELAND CLUB FINAL Croke Park - St. Patrick’s Day Dr. Crokes 1- 9 - - 1 – 7 We’ve won it at last. After 25 years of waiting we won the Andy Merrigan Cup on a scoreline of 1-9 to 1-7 at Croke Park, on St. Patrick’s Day. Slaughneil led by 0-2 to nil after 5 minutes. We scored three points without reply in the next 5 minutes to go 0-3 to 0-2 ahead after 10 minutes. A very good goal by our opponents, followed by two more points put them five points ahead as we approached the 20 th minute. I believe the defining period of the game came in the ten minutes before half – time when we outscored the Derry team 1-3 to 0 - 1 to go in at half – time 1 – 6 to 1 – 5 in front. Our opponents had a player red carded just before half – time so they faced the same task we had to face a quarter of a century ago, when we overcame our number disadvantage and won by a point. Both sides found it difficult to break the respective defences in the second half. We scored three points to our opponents’ two points in the first twenty minutes of this half to leave us two points in front. Many pundits would say that we played cagey and a game of keep ball in the last ten minutes. It did however pay off for us and got us over the line. Remarkably Slaughneil had just two possessions and controlled the ball for only fifty seconds in this ten minute period. This was a team effort from us right throughout the game. One of the highlights was our goal after 20 minutes when Daithí Casey ran at pace through our opponents defence, delivered a great pass to Colm Cooper who made no mistake with a sublime finish. John Payne was adjudged “Man of the Match” by T.G.4. and it would be hard to disagree with their decision as he gave a masterful display from the right corner back position in the second half. Team And Scorers: Shane Murphy; John Payne; Mike Moloney; Luke Quinn; David O’Leary; Gavin White; Fionn Fitzgerald; Ambrose O’Donovan; Alan O’Sullivan; Johnny Buckley; Gavin O’Shea; Brian Looney 0-3; Kieran O’Leary; Daithí Casey 0-3 (0-2 frees); Colm Cooper 1-2 (0-2 frees). Subs: Jordan Kiely; Micheál Burns 0-1; Shane Doolan; Tony Brosnan; Eoin Brosnan; Chriss Brady. One would feel sympathy for Slaughneil. They now have lost two All Ireland Finals. They seem to have such great resilience that I expect them to bounce back and win the ultimate prize in Club Football. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to our Senior Team and manager Pat O’Shea and his selectors Harry O’Neill, Eddie O’Sullivan, Niall O’Callaghan and Mike Buckley, our two men doing the logistics – Matthew Courtney and Seamus O’Doherty and our medical man Brian O’Callaghan on winning the Andy Merrigan Cup for the second time. What a great day Na Crocaigh Abu!

Gneeveguilla went straight up the field from the resulting kick out and hit the post before Corneilus Buckley pointed. Ballydonoughe added one more point before half time to leave it Gneeveguilla 0-03 Ballydonoughe 1-06. Ballydonoughe came out all guns blazing in the second half and when Paudie Lyons found the net after seven minutes the game was well beyond Gneeveguilla’s grasp. Gneeveguilla fought hard with Don Murphy Dean Crowley and Fergus McAulliffe trying to make things happen. Killarney Legion Gaa LÁ FÉILE PHÁDRAIG Well done to Stella Moloney and all those involved in the St. Patrick’s Day parade as they made it three wins out of four. Not a bad record and shows great creativity and energy to maintain and even improve as each year goes by. Pity about the weather. CO. LEAGUE Killarney Legion 3-14 Spa 3-12 A first round win for the seniors in a high scoring game against Spa in Derreen. The Legion lined out with one of it’s youngest sides in recent years and all of them acquitted themselves well in what was always going to be a good test. The management will doubtless take a lot of positives from the win and will also be happy with the fitness of the side which was well tested in a close often times physical contest. On the other hand the concession of three goals at critical times will be examined and made the job a bit harder that what it should have been. The forwards well led by the rejuvenated Tom Moriarty and Jamie O Sullivan were composed and hard working. The defence on the face of it did play well but did see Spa break through for their goals at times when the home side looked to have opened up a winning lead. In the end it took two fine saves from Brian Kelly to stay ahead but he saved the best for last when with just two points in it and Spa through on goal he stretched full length to finger tip a goal bound shot onto the butt of the post to effectively secure the two welcome opening county league points. Tosú maith. ALL IRELAND CLUB FINAL Well done to Dr. Crokes on their All Ireland club final win in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day. Well done also to the Sem as they qualified for another tilt at glory. SYMPATHY The Killarney Legion Club extends it’s deepest sympathy to the Slattery family on the death of Finbar R.I.P. Na Gael raced into an early two point lead before Tadgh O’ Shea settled Fossa’s nerves with a point from play. Great credit must go to Fintan Coffey who got married on Saturday, yet lined out at full forward on Sunday and gave an absolutely brilliant display, this showed incredible commitment and should be acknowledged. Fintan kicked a fantastic point from play and in the 10th minute gave a great pass to the in-rushing Donald O’ Sullivan who finished deftly to the net to give Fossa a commanding lead. Matt Rennie and Mark Dennehy gave us a great platform at midfield where they worked hard and won a lot of ball throughout the entire game. Further points from Fintan Coffey, Tadgh O’ Shea and a great effort from Dan Keeffe left Fossa in the lead at half time, 1-07 to 0-05. Playing against a very strong wind in the second half, Fossa had to really up the work rate, which they did. Mark Dennehy thundered forward to kick an excellent point after 6 minutes, Na Gael used the wind to full advantage and had us under pressure but our defence worked really hard. In the 16th minute Na Gael struck for a fortuitous goal but Fossa didn’t drop they heads, Dara Rice was causing the Na Gael backs lots of problems with his intelligent runs forward and this paid off when he punched a point to relieve some of the pressure, Mikey O’Shea came on and kicked an excellent point with his left foot to leave Fossa 3 points up with time running out. The Na Gael pressure paid off when they were awarded a penalty in the 27th minute which they scored, this was the last score of the game and it finished, Fossa 1-10, Na Gael 2-07. Next up is Ballymac next Sunday in Fossa at 2pm. MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV. 3 Gaeltacht 3-8, Fossa 1-10 Fossa made the long journey to the Gaeltacht for their second game in the county league. Weather conditions were pretty bad and Fossa played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half but found themselves trailing at half time on a score line of 1-6 to 0-06, the six Fossa points coming from the boot of David Clifford. The second half saw a much improved performance from the Fossa side, Anthony O’Keefe, Garry Cronin, Eoin Talbot and Mark Donnellon tightened things up at the back, John Talbot and Oran O’Murchu improved in the middle of the field - in the forwards, there was much better effort. A goal by Liam Buckley and points by Emmett O’Shea and Rory Doyle kept Fossa in the hunt right to the end but Fossa ran out of time and
