"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Back to the classroom for Pres girls’ 40th anniversary ONCE they set foot in their alma mater, it was like stepping back through the corridors of time for a nostalgic group of past pupils of St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School last Saturday. The Leaving Cert class of 1976 had never before had a reunion and so the 40th anniversary gathering was all the more special. Organised by Claire Breen, the programme included a walk in the Demesne as well as a visit to St Brigid’s, afternoon tea in the International Hotel and dinner in The Malton. Claire started planning the event with the aid of old photographs of the three classes that comprised that particular year (which featured students from the Presentation and Mercy Secondary Schools which had amalgamated in 1974). “School reunions aren’t for everyone, but using the photographs as the starting point, I made contact with those I knew in the class who in turn could track down many others and gathered email addresses and mobile numbers,” said Claire. Out of the core 76 students in 1976, 40 eventually committed to meet on Saturday and Sunday. As well as enjoying the chance to catch up with one another, the former classmates were also delighted to meet their teachers, including 1976 principal Sr Bride Given and Sr Elizabeth Behan, Mrs Mary Kavanagh, Mrs Kathleen Murphy, Mrs Bridie Horan, Mrs Breda Ashe and Mrs Noreen Daly. “Friendships have been re-established, connections have been made, life stories to date exchanged and many are now left with a sense of fulfilment for having reconnected with that part of our younger selves," said Claire. The group thanked St Brigid’s principal Roisin Moore for welcoming them back to the school as well as organising a tour and the teachers who came from near and far to attend.

Editor’s View SAVING lives has been a big focus over the past week. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae was among many supporters who enjoyed all the thrill of the rodeo ring as they leapt aboard a bucking bronco in McSorley’s Bar in aid of Killarney Cardiac Response Unit on Friday. In addition, new defibrillators were unveiled at three locations in Kilcummin on Wednesday thanks to the dedicated efforts of a group of local volunteers. Meanwhile, that annual heralding of the summer season, the Killarney Athletic Seven-A-Side tournament, was launched on Monday. Congratulations are due to multi-talented Danielle O’Sullivan, Killarney, the newly crowned Kerry Rose, and we wish Danielle all the best as she represents her county in the Rose of Tralee International Festival. She succeeds Julett Culloty, from Kilcummin,

who did Kerry proud in the role over the past 12 months. This week as well as all the latest news and pictures, we are delighted to present our monthly Home & Living section, turning the focus on extensions. In addition, for any reader looking for a set of new wheels in the near future, go straight to the first of Killarney Advertiser’s two-part special on buying a new car. We are also giving a glimpse into the fortnight ahead, with all the latest on the Beerfest (taking place this weekend) and the BikeFest, scheduled for the June bank holiday weekend. ‘Joe’s resilience and strength of character are inspirational’ A YOUNG Killarney man needs your help and support as he seeks specialised treatment for major spinal injuries. In 2014, Josef Urbanszky was enjoying life as a popular, sports-loving 18-year-old. But in May of that year Josef received a spinal chord injury as a result of breaking his neck in a car accident. Josef was a passenger in the vehicle that was involved in the devastating car accident, which would change his life forever. Josef, a keen sportsman and musician, was paralysed from the chest down. The young man, who has lived with his family in Killarney from the age of nine, was immediately transferred to the Mater Hospital in Dublin where he spent three months recovering and underwent major surgery for his broken neck. With the devastating news that he was paralyzed from the chest down, Josef was transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire to begin his long road of recovery and adjustment to his injury. Now his family, friends and neighbours are helping him settle back into his life in Killarney and help him receive specialised physiotherapy in Slovakia. “In order to ensure that Joe receives the ongoing rehabilitation and care that he desperately needs we need your help,” stated his family. “The costs involved are substantial and far outreach what is possible for the

Question I intend to buy a drone. Are there any rules I should be aware of? Answer Drones and model aircraft are both considered small unmanned aircraft and the same rules apply to their operation. The rules are set out in the Small Unmanned Aircraft (Drones) and Rockets Order 2015 (SI 563/2015). Under the rules, all drones weighing 1kg or more must be registered with the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). This includes the weight of the battery and all attached equipment, including cargo, at the start of its flight. You must be over 16 years of age to register a drone, otherwise it must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. You register your drone online at iaa.ie/drones. You must never operate a drone in a negligent or reckless manner so as to endanger the life or property of others and you must have permission from the landowner for take-off and landing. You must never operate it: •Farther than 300 metres from you or out of your direct line of sight •Over 120 metres above ground level •Over urban areas or over a group of 12 or more people •Within 120 metres of any person, vessel or structure not under your control •Closer than 5 kilometres from an aerodrome •If it will be a hazard to another aircraft in flight •In civil or military controlled airspace or in restricted areas such as prisons If you want to operate your drone outside these limits, you must apply to the IAA for a specific operating permission and complete a drone safety training course. If your drone weighs 4kg or more, you must complete a drone safety training course before operating it. You should be aware that there may be privacy or trespass issues if you operate a drone over private property. While you do not need insurance to operate a drone it is recommended that you are insured and that you complete a drone safety training course. Take a walk on the wild side in Kerry WE’RE already test-driving our hiking boots in advance of Killarney Walking Festival. By nature of its location, it provides the most natural setting in the world to host any walking festival. This year’s walking festival takes place from Friday, June 10, to Sunday, June 12. The organisers have included some new signature treks - The ‘Peaks of the Reeks’ including the iconic Carrantuohill and Coomloughra Horse Shoe Treks, and Caherconree - Ancient fort of Cú Roí Mac Dáire. “The festival is a chance to enjoy a weekend of long relaxing guided walks, and boat trips. The headquarters is The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney,” said spokesperson Valerie O’Sullivan. “Discover the hidden valleys, mountains, reeks, lake shores and all that is beautiful and untamed about Killarney and its famed National Park.” The event will also feature a charity walk in aid of Killarney Water Rescue. “This will be a sun ‘set’ on Strickeen, on Friday evening, June 10, departing Kate Kearney’s Cottage at 7.30pm,” said Valerie. “Strickeen is part of MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range, at 440m, it follows a path to the top until an ancient cairn/ritual greets the walker. Here is where the ‘craic’ begins - walkers will be asked to dance an entire Kerry polka on the summit, just bring a tin whistle and a bodhrán!” Killarney Water Rescue provides an important voluntary service to the area and it hopes to purchase a 4x4 vehicle for attending all emergencies. John O’Sullivan, Reeks Lodge and Guiding said: “This festival is for everyone - families, walking clubs and anyone who loves the great outdoors. The schedule of walks has something for all ages and abilities, from strenuous category three hikes to easy low-level category one walks. “From the challenging McGillycuddy’s Reeks hike to the leisurely wood trails and Innisfallen Island by boat. There are 13 guided walks to choose from in all.” Also guiding are the experienced Killarney guides Ray and Mary Walsh of Walk with Me. For more information and registration see www. killarneywalkingfestival.ie.

World record-breaking wellington walk inspires talented Molly A SUPER-TALENTED Killarney teenager has won a creative writing competition at Listowel Writers’ Week for the fifth year in a row. Molly O’Mahony (17) has won the 2016 first prize in the Creative Writing for Youth 18 years and under category which is sponsored by Kerry County Council. Molly, from Lackabane in Fossa, has been a prizewinner every year since 2012. She will be presented with her prize on Wednesday night next at a ceremony in the Listowel Arms Hotel at which Pulitzer prizewinning poet and author Paul Muldoon will be the special guest. Molly’s entry was a witty short story about a teenage girl’s infatuation with country singer Nathan Carter, how she eventually encountered him at a charity wellington walk in Killarney and how they were destined to be together forever until fate – in the form of the Molly O’Mahony. Bishop of Kerry wearing his wellington boots – intervened and broke her heart. The story was inspired by an event when a new world record for the number of people walking in wellingtons was set by Glenflesk GAA Club and the Bishop of Kerry just pipped VIP guest Nathan Carter at the finish line. Molly, a Leaving Cert student at Intermediate School Killorglin, will have her work published in the Writers’ Week anthology as well as receiving a cash prize and she will read her winning entry at the winners' forum in Listowel on Thursday.

Kerry Rose Danielle saluted for a Grand achievement OUR newly crowned Kerry Rose Danielle O’Sullivan was back working in the Killarney Grand this week after clinching the coveted title to go forward and represent the county in this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival. Law student Danielle, sponsored by the Killarney Grand, emerged victorious from 31 participants at the Kerry Rose Selection. The Killarney native was announced the winner by host Daithi O Sé at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel. Also attending the event were Kerry Roses from previous years, and the 2016 Limerick and Clare Roses. Danielle is currently studying for her master’s degree in human rights law in the University of Limerick, and plans on qualifying as a solicitor when she finishes. WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A CAR ACCIDENT By John Healy JP Healy & Co Insurances ltd

Being involved in a car accident can be a traumatic experience. While vehicle damage can be repaired or replaced the health and well being of all passengers should be paramount. Here are some pointers if you are in this position • Stay calm and try to assess any casualties • Do not move the injured • Call emergency services • Call the Gardai before you move any vehicles • Swap the following details with the other party, Name, Address and phone numbers, Registration numbers, Insurance policy numbers (check the insurance disc) and Licence numbers

health&lifestyle THE A-LIST SECRET TO YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN When lifestyle blogger Suzanne Jackson of SoSueMe tried the CACI facial she was highly impressed. The CACI facial is available at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

THE CACI Non-Surgical Facelifts have been hailed the world over as the industry’s definitive alternative to Botox. Most excitingly, the CACI Ultimate Facial has recently been introduced in Ireland due to high demand. The CACI Ultimate Facial’s plumping, lifting and toning effects are already loved by many A-List fans including J-Lo! So what does it do? It uses micro-current facial techniques to restore and redefine facial muscles, plump out lines and wrinkles and sculpt the cheekbones for a smoother and younger looking complexion. Firstly Anna exfoliated my skin with a tool that buffed gently over the face- it was a light microdermabrasion. I’ve had bad experiences with microdermabrasions before, so Anna put it on the lowest setting possible, which put me at ease straight away! Then came the bit I was most nervous about – the electrical pulses. Using what looked like two metal rods, Anna worked around the eye area first, holding and lifting each area! She re-

assured me it was on a very low setting once again and I could feel a slight zing as she moved the rods around. It wasn’t uncomfortable or anything. Lastly, I loved the mask. It was full of hyaluronic acid and collagen and intensively moisturises and calms the skin. Anna then used a roller like motion to massage in the moisture – it was so relaxing! When we finished the treatment, my skin had a really nice healthy glow and those really fine lines were much less noticeable. It really is no wonder that this season’s essential treatment is this CACI facial and has attracted a vast array of celebrity devotees. •For more information or to avail of a free CACI demonstration, contact Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966.

Kerry’s award-winning beaches are making waves THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE IN THE 3D animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, we'll finally find out why the birds are so angry. The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds--or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it's up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

APPLAUSE rang out yesterday as it was announced that Kerry’s beaches have again maintained their excellent standard with the awarding of 14 Blue Flags for 2016 by An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland. The Irish Blue Flag jury made the announcement of the accolades. The flags are awarded to beaches and marinas which comply with a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education and beach management. Beaches must also comply with EU bathing water directives to secure a Blue Flag. Kerry has gained an additional Blue Flag this year with Fenit Harbour and Marina being included on the list to bring the total number of flags in the county to 14. The county now has two more Blue Flags than in 2013. Last year, Rossbeigh regained its flag following repairs carried out after storm damage the previous year. Blue Flags have been awarded to Ballybunion North, Ballybunion South, Ballyheigue, Banna, Fenit, Magherabeg, Ventry, Inch, Rossbeigh, Kells, White Strand (Caherciveen), Ballinskelligs and Derrynane. In addition Fenit Harbour and Marina was awarded a Blue Flag for the 2016 season. A Green Coast Flag has been awarded to Béal Bán Beach in Ballyferriter. Green Coast Flags are awarded where there is promotion and facilitation of coastal clean-up initiatives and where there are improvements in Ireland’s coastal environment. The cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Pat McCarthy, said: “Blue Flags are an indicator of the quality of our beach environment and it is encouraging that Kerry is continuing to set a high standard, adding one new Blue Flag to the total in Kerry this year.” The chief executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said: “Kerry County Council invests tremendous effort in formulating strategies to keep County Kerry at the top of the Blue Flag Programme, and will continue to invest the necessary resources to ensure the sustainable management of the magnificent beaches along the Kerry coast.”

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

THIS WEEKEND’S Gospel always evokes in me a sense of a sharing: a sense of family picnic. Using mindfulness I try to place myself at the table of The Last Supper just as I do when meditating on the Fifth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary. Those schools and parishes that organise a First Communion Breakfast know well how to recapture the community aspect of Communion. Another tradition much appreciated by so many parishioners is the Corpus Christi procession. In many places it is no doubt a day special for this year’s First Communicants and another opportunity to dress up in those special clothes and be part of the sacramental community and the larger family community. Today, we don’t just receive Jesus into our souls, in song we also take Him with us around our streets. Alan Whelan, Carnahone, Beaufort

MUSINGS

LUKE 9:11-17: Jesus welcomed the crowd, taught them, and cured those in need of healing. Bring to mind the ways in which the story of Jesus and his message have brought you enlightenment, and healing. The miracle is symbolic of the abundance of blessings coming to us from God through Jesus. How has your faith in Jesus been a source of nourishment to you? What blessings have you received through your faith? When the disciples became aware of the problem, they wanted to send the crowd away and Jesus told them: “You give them something to eat.” They thought what they had was insufficient but Jesus used the little they had to feed the crowd. Have you ever found that when you give the little you have to a situation, the results were beyond your expectations? John Byrne OSA

THE DEEP END

“IF THERE is hunger anywhere in the world, then our celebration of the Eucharist is somehow incomplete everywhere in the world … In the Eucharist we receive Christ hungering in the world. He comes to us, not alone, but with the poor, the oppressed, the starving of the earth. Through him they are looking to us for help, for justice, for love expressed in action. Therefore we cannot properly receive the bread of life unless at the same time we give the bread of life to those in need wherever and whoever they may be.” Those are the words of Pedro Arrupe SJ. The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us of our responsibility to be in communion with the whole body of Christ. There is room for everyone at the divine banquet – especially the poor and the hungry. In this weekend’s Gospel story of the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus refuses to leave anyone hungry, even when his own disciples suggest sending the crowds away. There is more than enough bread for everyone. Notice that Jesus gives the food to his disciples to distribute among the hungry crowd. He is passing on the responsibility to his followers. It is up to all of us to help those in need. Having received Jesus’ body and blood in the Eucharist, we are expected to pass it on – to play our part in feeding the hungry and working for justice. Tríona Doherty

Welcome

T

o our Home & Living section. This month we are looking at extending your home. Having just survived an extension to my own home over the last few months I have one piece of advice – if you can move out, do! It’s all exciting for the first few days when walls come down and you see what your space will look like but sawdust in your coffee loses its charm after about week three! If you can’t move out try and minimise the dust with plastic sheeting and don’t try to clean every evening or you’ll run out of steam pretty quickly. But I must say it’s worth it and extensions big or small can change how you live in your home for the better. Yours in decorating,

Good news for those of you with homes built before 2006 BETTER ENERGY HOMES is a government programme operated by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland. You can apply online at sea.ie or call 1850 927 000 for fixed cash grants for insulation and heating system upgrades. By upgrading you are making your home warmer and you could cut your heating bill by up to 50%. You are also doing your bit for climate change by using less oil or gas. There is a list of registered contractors on the site. Grant approval must be in place before works commence.

THERE are a few considerations when choosing the right flooring for This Fossil design is available from JLT in Farranfore. your extension, first what flooring is already in the adjoining rooms and are you upgrading those as well as your extension. Is it a high or low traffic area? Will it be safe for children? Do you have pets? HARDWOOD FLOORS Pros: Hardwood is great as it can be sanded at a later stage. Cons: Be careful if the temperatures change dramatically as they can expand and contract. ENGINEERED HARDWOOD This is three or four layers glued together to create a plank with a 6mm top layer. Pros: These can be sanded like hardwood but are less likely to expand or contract. Cons: Can scratch like hardwood. LAMINATE This type of flooring is usually made from a high density fibre, not real wood. Pros: Gives you the wood look without the price tag. Cons: It cannot be sanded or repaired. TILES There are lots of choices, ceramic, quarry, porcelain and natural stone. Pros: Hard-wearing, easy to clean, tiles suit most budgets. Cons: Floor has to be level, grout may become discoloured, tiles can chip and crack. High-gloss tiles can be slippery when wet, and some natural tiles need regular sealing.

Tips on extending your home

PLANNING ADVICE FROM KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL

QUESTION I’m building an extension. Do I need planning permission?

ANSWER

SMALL-SCALE domestic extensions, including conservatories, do not

require planning permission if the extension is to the rear of the house and complies with the following:

• The original floor area of the house is not increased by more than 40sq m. Where the house has been extended before, the new and existing extension cannot exceed 40 sqm in total

• For terraced or semi-detached houses, the floor area of any extension above ground level does not exceed 12 square metres (including An informed estate agent will be able to tell you what a potential buyer on the market will be looking for in a house so if you are planning on extending your home because you are looking to increase its value on the property market, then you really need to talk to an estate agent. An extension is a lot cheaper than moving or building a new house, but the cost of building the extension is greater per square foot.

Building an extension or indeed making any other significant changes to your house may require that you get planning permission. You must be certain you have the right permission before you start. Hire an architect. This may be an expensive short-term step to take, but a top

architect can save you money from long-term mistakes and bad workmanship and will also sort out the planning permission side of things for you.

Have some idea of a budget that you want to spend on the extension. This is to make sure that you don’t face any nasty surprises half way through.

Get a number of quotes and never choose a builder just because he’s given you the cheapest quote.

Always allow for roughly 10% more than you’ve budgeted for as

unforeseen expenses always pop up. Make sure that you know if the prices you got for the job are inclusive or exclusive of VAT. Get references, qualifications and insurance details from each contractor who quotes for the job. Make sure you have a building contract drawn up between you and the contractor so that there is no confusion on what has to be done.

Bear in mind that you may also need to rent alternative accommodation

while the extension is underway, and this in itself should be factored into your overall budget. A typical house extension, depending on the size can realistically take anywhere from four to six months from start to finish. Before you go extending, have a chat with your neighbours about it. Make

sure they don’t have any problems with your project. You would be surprised the amount of times neighbours become irritated during a renovation, simply because they weren’t informed about it.

You may not realise it, but an extension could significantly reduce the amount of natural light entering the house. One tip is to use velux windows rather than the standard vertical ones, as they let in more light. Extending your house is a one-off event in most cases. So do yourself a favour, and do it properly the first time around.

previous extensions)

• Any extension above ground floor level is at least 2m from any boundary

• Any extension does not exceed the height of the house

• Any extension does not reduce the area of private open space, reserved for the occupants of the house, to less than 25 sq m.

There are also rules about the height allowed in such an extension. These include:

• If the rear wall of the house does not include a gable, the height of the walls of the extension must not exceed the height of the rear wall of the house

• If the rear wall has a gable, the walls of the extension shall not be higher than the sidewalls of the house

• In the case of a flat roofed extension, the height of the highest part of the roof may not exceed the height of the eaves or parapet.

There are also rules about the required distances between windows in

extensions, the facing boundary of the adjoining property and the use of the roof of the extension.

It is important to note that there are a number of instances where exemptions do not apply, i.e. planning permission will be required no

matter how minor the development and Article 9 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 - 2015 identifies these instances.

If you need guidance on building an extension and planning

requirements you can contact Kerry County Council’s Planning Department on 066-7183582

‘Your home has a huge impact on your emotions’

Want to get Elaine’s advice? Tel: Corcoran’s at 064-6691112 Call into Corcoran’s on Saturday/Sunday

EVERYONE deserves to go home to a welcoming environment. That’s the motto of talented interior designer Elaine Price who is based at Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets every Saturday and Sunday. And the key to successful interior design according to Elaine is ensuring your home reflects your personality and interests. “I don’t think people realise the impact your home has on your emotions,” said Elaine.

Top-class interior designer Elaine co-ordinates the wonderfully eye-catching displays in Corcoran’s and she advices customers on all aspects of creating a home that will suit their taste – and budget. “People can walk in to the shop on Saturday or Sunday to meet me but if they want a specific time then just call the shop on 064-6691112 and we will be delighted to make an appointment,” said Elaine. The Killarney interior designer is passionate about her role. “I love meeting people and discovering what will help create a dream environment for them,” she said. “If clients want me to, I can go to their homes and give a consultation, or they can also bring in in photographs. It is important to have as much information as you can so we can work with it.” Elaine, who also works with children, has always had a love of colour. “I did training in colour analysis and when I am working with children I also place an emphasis on creating the correct environment around them,” she said. Elaine is also delighted with the arrival instore of prestigious paint and wallpaper

brand Little Green. “If you have the right paint it creates a fabulous backdrop for everything else,” she said.

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

IS IT GOING TO BE A CASE OF HELLO SUNSHINE THIS SUMMER? FULL many a sandal was bought to blush unseen (to cruelly paraphrase Thomas Gray in his Elegy in a Country Churchyard). But, seriously, how many of us have by now racked up several summers’ worth of flip-flops and tops that have languished on shelves and in wardrobes, waiting in vain for their chance to shine? Never let it be said that hope doesn’t spring eternal among the Irish. Despite the fact that rainshowers rarely fail to put a dampener on plans for those summer antics we avidly read about in the glossies and gaze at on the Australian soaps, we still buy into the fantasy. So, from May onwards, you’ll find us dutifully stocking up on surfboards and scanning makeup counters’ summer displays as well as filing away ideas for beach reads and lining our bathroom shelves with Factor 50. Only to be disappointed that those halcyon days, if they do arrive, tend to be few and far between. But, whisper it, hopes are high that we will be in for some good weather over the next week or so at least.

The past seven days saw temperatures soar, and the thermometer should be spelling out even more good news in days to come. Word is that temperatures will start to increase daily, starting next week at the early 20s. So maybe this writer will finally get the chance to air a pair or two of very sad and neglected sandals (they’re starting to wonder if they committed some grave offence against me in a past life) and perhaps we’ll all be stowing away the raingear and stocking up on suncream.

Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Let us know your views at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

FIGURE IT OUT... Less than half of the costs involved in building a three-bed, semi-detached house in the greater Dublin area go towards construction, according to a survey by the Society of Chartered Surveyors. According to the report, entitled ‘The Real Cost of New House Delivery,’ the average cost of building a three bedroom, semi-detached house in the greater Dublin area is €330,000. The report, based on a study of eight house building projects in or around Dublin, found that the ‘hard cost’ of construction was around €150,000, amounting to less than half (45pc) of the total cost of building the house. However land and acquisition costs added €57,500 (17%) to that, while a €39,000 (12%) VAT bill also applied. Other ‘soft costs’ also added to the final bill; including levies, professional fees and sales and marketing costs. And when a €38,000 (11%) margin was added, the SCSI said the total cost of building came to €330,000. The society said that the report highlighted the need for cost reduction as part of any attempt to increase the supply of housing in the country. It called on the Government to look at the options available to it as part of this, though it said the focus should always be improving supply rather than adding to house price inflation. Michael Mahon of the SCSI described the fact that the soft costs dominate the total cost as an issue the government urgently needs to address. “The country is experiencing a chronic housing shortage which is contributing significantly to the current homelessness crisis," he said. “The findings of this report highlight a number of pressing issues, particularly on the soft cost side. We need to kick-start housing supply as soon as possible and to accelerate from the current output of 12,000 units per annum to the 25,000 units which is required." The cost of building a new house in the capital is a staggering €45,000 more than the median asking price of a three bedroom semi-detached house in Dublin, according to a property report from MyHome.ie/Davy. So, a couple, ' both of whom earn the average industrial wage of €37,000, would be unable to afford the cost of a new house, even after drawing a maximum loan amount. If they were to buy a three bedroom semi, priced at €285,000, they would require a deposit of €35,000. With a combined income of €74,000, they could draw a maximum loan of €259,000, which would allow them to purchase a property up to €294,000 – leaving them €36,493 short of the current total required to provide a new house. Basically, this means a young garda and teacher couple could not afford a modest house in Dublin.

Seriously injured hillwalker rescued on the Reeks

THE Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was called to the rescue of a hillwalker on the lower northern slopes of Cnoc na Toinne, above the Hag’s Glen in the McGillycuddy’s Reeks, last Thursday. The walker, a man in his late 30s from the Dublin area, sustained serious injuries in a fall from a common descent route known as the Zig-Zags or Bothar na Gige. The man had been part of a large group involved in an ascent of Corran Tuathail earlier in the day. KMRT members attended the incident and treated the man at the scene for multiple injuries and stretchered him down the mountain to a flat landing zone at the top of Ard na Locha, where he was immediately transported by Rescue 115 Coastguard helicopter to University Hospital Kerry for further medical treatment. The callout concluded at approximately 5.15pm. A total of 15 KMRT personnel were involved in the rescue effort.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD PLASTIC POLLUTION Millions of tons of tiny debris from plastic bags, bottles and clothes in the world’s oceans present a serious threat to human health and marine ecosystems. This is the stark warning issued by the United Nations in a report on the most dangerous environmental problems facing the world today. Global plastic production has increased dramatically in recent years. Between 2004 and 2014, the amount of plastic produced rose by 38 per cent, the report said. And poor waste disposal means when we have finished with our takeaway containers, cigarette butts and party balloons, they are worn down into trillions of ever-smaller particles by the waves. There is a growing presence of these microplastics, particles of under 5mm in length, in the world’s oceans. In 2010, between 4.8 million and 12.7 million tons of plastic was washed into the seas and has since shown up in the stomachs of whales, plankton and other marine life. More than a quarter of all fish now contain plastic, according to a recent study which analysed the guts of fish sold at markets in Indonesia and California. Scientists fear that chemicals in plastics and also chemicals which attach themselves to plastic in the natural environment could cause poisoning, infertility and genetic disruption in marine life, and potentially in humans if ingested in high quantities. "The presence of microplastic in foodstuffs could potentially increase direct exposure of plasticassociated chemicals to humans and may present an attributable risk to human health," the UN report, called Frontiers, said. People could even be breathing in plastic microparticles suspended in the air, with the risk of a noxious effect on the lungs similar to car fumes. Some areas of the world have higher concentrations of microplastics than others. East Asia is one of the worst affected places, with 27 times more plastic found in the seas around Japan than elsewhere in the world. A vast "plastic soup" of waste floating in the Pacific Ocean, known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, could stretch to twice the size of Texas. Similar patches are found in the other oceans. The impact is global, with microplastics found in places as far-flung as a Mongolian mountain lake and in deep sea sediments, said scientist Jacquie McGlade at a recent UN conference. Other environmental concerns highlighted by the UN report included the surge in epidemics of diseases passed from animals to humans, such as Zika, Ebola and bird flu, The report also warned that drought and rising temperatures related to climate change can result in toxic contamination of essential crops such as maize, wheat and barley. It predicted a 2C rise in global temperatures would cause an increase in fungal toxins on these crops – which can cause cancer and stunt the growth of foetuses – warning this could become a food safety issue in Europe. Worries over the use of ‘microbeads’, small plastic pieces used as an exfoliating agent in soap and make-up, has caused a number of cosmetics companies, including Clarins, Estée Lauder and Proctor & Gamble, to pledge to remove them from products. Synthetic fibres released into the world’s waters through tiny fibres from artificial fabrics like fleeces and polyester in washing machines are also one of the biggest causes of plastic pollution in the ocean, the report said. And while plastic bags and other items labelled as ‘biodegradable’ may seem a good solution, in most cases they will only break down in temperatures over 50C – much lower than the conditions found in the sea, where many end up.

Rory McIlroy praised for donation THE head of a charity that provides nursing care and support for children with severe neurological development issues has praised golf star Rory McIlroy for donating his Irish Open prize money to the cause. The Jack and Jill Foundation was one of the beneficiaries of McIlroy’s Rory Foundation, the charitable trust that hosted last weekend’s Irish Open in Kildare. Mr McIlroy announced he will donate his €666,000 Irish Open winner’s prize to the Jack and Jill Foundation, as well as to Barretstown and the LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.

Twenty new jobs for Killarney A HIGH-TECH company specialising in satellite communications is to create at least 20 jobs in Killarney in coming weeks, reports Breda Joy in Kerry’s Eye. The company, VT iDirect, will base its operations in the Reeks Gateway building which currently houses retail outlets and medical practices. The fitout of a 3,000sq ft office centre is nearing completion in a section of a building recently acquired by an Irish-registered investment company with US links. The new offices are located above the retails section. There is potential to increase the number of jobs to 30, it is reported.

Rescuers recover body of climber A HELICOPTER has retrieved the body of a Dutch climber who died last week on Mount Everest and attempts are being made to recover the bodies of two other climbers. The body of Eric Arnold, from Rotterdam, was flown from Everest directly to a hospital in Kathmandu to be put in the morgue. He died last Friday near South Col after showing signs of altitude sickness. Attempts are being made to retrieve the bodies of an Australian and an Indian climber but it is unclear when they will be taken to Kathmandu.

Councillor Healy-Rae said: “If the HSE won't give this land, I call on Kerry County Council to acquire the land through a compulsory acquisition order." SUSI STUDENT GRANT APPLICATIONS Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI), is the centralised agency responsible for awarding higher and further education grants and is currently accepting applications, says career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan BEFORE applying for grants, applicants can visit the SUSI website (www.susi.ie) which should answer any questions there may be and to use the Eligibility Reckoner which will help give an indication regarding eligibility for funding before making a formal application. In order to apply to SUSI applicants will need to go online to set up their own online account. They will need their PPSN (Personal Public Service Number), an email address and phone number. Applicants do not need to know the exact course they will be attending before applying online. In order to qualify for a grant a number of criteria regarding nationality and residency, course (type and level) as well as income must

58

Killarney Advertiser 27.05.16

be met. Gross income from all sources for the previous full tax year (2015) must be assessed as being within the limits specified in the Student Grant Scheme 2016-2017. Once an applicant decides to apply they will be assessed as either “dependant” or “independent”. Dependant applicants are those who are under 23 years of age and living with their parents and independent applicants are those who are aged over 23 years not living with their parents and will be assessed on their own income and that of their spouse/partner, if relevant. Applicants, in general, will not get a grant for repeating a year or attending a course at a level that does not represent progression from what they have done before.

SUSI deal with grant applications on a first come first served basis so their advice is to apply as early as possible (application has been open since April 4). Applicants can track the progress of their application at any time by using the SUSI Online Tracker. The closing date for new applications is Friday, July 8, and for those who are progressing to the next year of their course and renewing their grants, the closing date is Monday, June 6. Best of luck to all students sitting the Leaving and Junior Certificate examinations! • You can contact Eithne Teahan by emailing info@careeroptionskerry.com or calling 0872028185

HOW TO BUY A NEW VEHICLE AND WHAT TO ASK YOUR DEALER BUYING a new vehicle is easy. But it could be the second biggest investment you ever make, so it pays to do everything you can to get the best possible deal.

Why buy new?

There are many advantages to buying a new vehicle over a used one. You have the choice of any vehicle you want with the exact specification you want. And you can’t beat that new vehicle smell. There's the opportunity to get consumer offers – cashback deals, free accessories, service packs, and, warranties, to give you peace of mind if something goes wrong. There are tons of great deals to find, all you have to do is choose the best one for you.

Identify your needs

There is a huge range of new vehicle models to choose from. So where should you start?

Always ask: Is the delivery included in the price?

How soon can the vehicle be delivered? Is road tax included? Are registration fees included? Is there a service pack as part of the deal?

Consider all your requirements. Ask yourself:

Visit the showroom

1. What will you use it for? 2. How long you expect to own it? 3. Are you looking for reliability? 4. How many miles do you plan to do? 5. Are you buying it for practicality, for fun, or perhaps a bit of both? 6. Do you want something luxurious or thrifty? 7. How much are you willing to spend (include other costs such as insurance, tax, services and fuel)? 8. What type of model and manufacturer are you leaning towards? These questions will influence your purchasing decision and help reach a conclusion on what type of motor you choose to go for.

Phoning the dealer

Always confirm the details in the advert are correct. This could save you a wasted trip.

If you’re buying from a franchised dealer (who sells vehicle on behalf of a manufacturer), visit the showroom to view the vehicle to make sure you’re happy with it. It’s best to take a look at the vehicle in the best conditions possible. Never view a vehicle in the dark or the rain - they can hide defects in the bodywork. Always test drive a vehicle before buying it as this will give you a feel for it and raise any concerns. For example, the vehicle might not be big enough for your needs, or the engine noise could be unbearable. Make sure you’re fully insured to drive the vehicle, and take proof of this with you. Most dealers will let you drive with trade number plates, which should provide you with cover - but check this is the case.

ADVANTAGES OF BUYING A NEW CAR Made to order You can spec a new car just the way you want it, or at least have the dealer search for one with the right combination of options and interior and exterior colours.

It’s not used A new car hasn’t been in any accidents, hasn’t been mistreated, has seen no wear or tear, and comes with a clean history that includes only being driven off the line, onto a transporter, and around the dealer’s lot. Warranty Like the rest of it, the new car’s warranty is untouched. You can buy warranties for used cars or go the certified preowned route, but the best warranty you can get—without paying extra—will be the one that comes with a new car from the manufacturer. Latest gizmos The newer the car, the more modern the geeky tech that’s packed inside. Multimedia and navigation interfaces are constantly evolving and improving, so if you have to have the latest in gadgets (and don’t want to add them yourself post-factory) the selection will be better in the new-car showroom.

Safety As vehicle safety laws become ever more stringent, automakers are forced to change the way vehicles are built and the safety systems with which they are equipped. Higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions Again, partly thanks to Big Brother, cars are largely getting more fuel efficient, even while simultaneously getting more powerful. The newest crop of diesels is cleaner than ever before, and choices in the hybrid segment are growing, too, if that’s your thing. Financing Banks offer lower financing rates on new vehicles because the vehicles are inherently worth more and have not already been hit by depreciation. Keep in mind that, when the lower APR still applies to a larger sum, your payments or total cost may still be higher. But if you plan to finance, check your deals before buying. The cheaper car might not turn out to be the better deal in the long run. Maintenance Some new cars, mainly those from luxury marques, include free scheduled maintenance for a certain amount of time or mileage. This built-in cost saving should be considered in the final price analysis if applicable. Legwork Once you’ve chosen a vehicle, or at least the brand you’re interested in, much of the new-car search can be offloaded on the salesperson, who can find the car you ask for. The same search in the used realm requires a lot more legwork on your part—hunting on the internet, visiting multiple private sellers, and driving from used lot to used lot.

Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle.

KRIS MEEKE AND PAUL NAGLE WIN A DRAMA FILLED RALLY OF PORTUGAL KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle were the team to beat on the fifth round of the 2016 FIA WRC, Rallye de Portugal. They became the fourth different winners of the season, making a return after missing the last two rounds in Argentina and Mexico. They took the lead on Friday and drove in a masterful way before clinching his first WRC win since Argentina last year. Portugal was only their third rally this year but it is worth remembering that he led in Monte Carlo before a freak incident damaged the Citroen suspension and he was hot on the heels of the all-conquering Ogier again in Sweden until an errant rock broke the steering. Their next WRC outing will be Finnish Rally on July 28.

Top Gear TV returns this Sunday! THE wait is nearly over: all-new Top Gear returns on this Sunday night, what you can expect from the first episode? In celebration of 1986 classic Top Gun – which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year – Chris Evans heads to Nevada to pit the 645bhp Dodge Viper ACR against a Chevy Corvette Z06 driven by Sabine Schmitz. Cue roof-mounted guns. Elsewhere, Matt LeBlanc takes Ariel’s manic Nomad into deepest Morocco for some fun, while back on British soil, both he and Chris Evans take a rainsoaked road trip to Blackpool in a pair of roofless Reliant Rialtos. Yup, it’s time for a UK vs USA challenge.

CAR FINANCE: PCPS EXPLAINED HOW to explain car finance in simple terms? Well, it’s a question of whether you want to spend your hard-earned cash or go the finance route. The fact is, taking a personal contract purchase or personal contract plan (PCP) can be a viable solution for many. A PCP is an agreement between you and the finance company that will mean for at least three years you'll be making payments on the car of your choice. A PCP is a form of car finance based on a Hire Purchase (HP) agreement. However, instead of paying off the entire value of the car in equal monthly instalments like an HP, you are effectively only paying off the depreciation via your monthly instalments on a PCP. At the end of the term, you still have a large amount outstanding (often known as the balloon). You have several options as to how to deal with this final amount, depending on whether or not you want to keep your car or change it. In comparing a PCP and HP, you are usually borrowing the same amount of money and paying a similar amount of interest (usually slightly more on a PCP due to how the repayments are worked out). The fees are usually about the same for both a PCP and HP as well.

What is the attraction of a PCP?

SO WHY go the route of a PCP? If you compare financing the same car on a PCP against an HP, the big difference is that you are paying off a much smaller amount of money via your monthly repayments. This means you can have a much lower monthly payment and/or a lower initial deposit and/or a shorter repayment term. Most people tend to change their cars about every three years. Most buyers financing a car have a reasonably small deposit. For this sort of situation, a PCP will give a much lower monthly payment than an HP, with the caveat that at the end of the agreement you will have to take action of some sort to settle the outstanding balance. This means that on a PCP, the same car will cost considerably less per month to finance than on an HP, or alternatively you can buy a more expensive car for the same monthly

payment. This is what makes a PCP so attractive to the car buyer. For dealers and manufacturers, a PCP has two great benefits: 1) the lower monthly payments mean that more of their customers can afford more of their cars; and 2) the final balloon payment at the end means that customers will, in all likelihood, buy another car on another PCP. There isn't really a downside to the PCP system so long as you keep your end of the deal. Remember to ask questions and read everything before signing, even take the agreement away with you so you can look at the fine print, don't be rushed into a decision on the day. So if you are looking at financing a new car check out the offers from the dealerships but read the fine print because no two agreements are the same.

Just a prayer from the family who loved you Just a memory fond and true In our hearts you will live forever Because we thought the world of you.

No matter how life changes No matter what we do A special place within our hearts Is always there for you.

God called your name so gently That only you could hear No-one heard the footsteps Of the angels drawing near. You left this world so quickly We still wonder why For the saddest part of all You never said goodbye.

A bouquet of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears Wishing God could have spared you If just for a few more years. It does not take a special day For us to think of you Each Mass we hear, each prayer we say Is offered up for you.

A million times we’ll miss you A million times we’ll cry If love alone could have saved you You never would have died.

We are sending a dove to heaven With a parcel on its wings Be careful how you open it It’s full of beautiful things. It’s filled with a million kisses Wrapped up with a million hugs It’s from all your family Who send it with all their love.

novena to st. anthony O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. R.K.

O Star of the Sea help me and show me herein you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. This prayer must be said for three days and after that the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thank you for favours received. N.C.

Oh Jesus, has said all you ask the Father in my name, he will grant through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. Killarney Swimming Club

As we approach the end of the swimming season, Killarney Swimming Club has had swimmers of every age and strength successfully competing in galas all over Munster with official results still coming in and more awaited. First up, well done to all our swimmers who took part in the “A” gala in Mallow recently. With the best swimmers in Munster competing, all at their optimum fitness level, we knew this would be a tough nut to crack. However, our squad did us proud at all levels and brought home a fine haul of medals. Girls under 11 – Pia Hickey, new to grade “A”, surprised everyone to take bronze in both the 100 metres backstroke and the 200 metres backstroke. Congratulations Pia. Girls under 13 – Treasa O’Sullivan turned on the style to win a bronze medal in an incredibly fast 200 metres backstroke race. Girls under 15 – As always, Margaret O’Brien dominated the pool, easily winning gold in the 200 metres butter-

fly and following that up with a bronze in the 400 metres Individual Medley and yet another bronze in the 100 metres butterfly. A stunning performance. Boys under 17 – In this, the hardest category of them all, Killarney showed some real class with two of the club’s top swimmers in the pool. Robert O’Brien saw off the best they could throw at him to win a precious gold medal in the 400 metres Individual Medley while Shane Courtney put in one of the best swims of the day to win gold in the 200 metres butterfly. Finishing with a flourish, Robert O’Brien also grabbed a bronze in 100 metres butterfly. Thanks to our coaches, Cathal O’Brien and Leontia Doody, who gave huge support and encouragement to all swimmers and to our team manager, Samantha O’Connor who, as always, was there to make sure everything went to plan. Thanks also to all parents for travelling and assisting. Finally, a reminder to everyone that our end-of-year outing takes place this Saturday the 28th of May. While great surprises are planned, we can tell you that it’s on in Castlegregory and that a pair of togs are essential! Also, there is a new rule that all adults on the bus must sing on the way home, so a set of earphones might be a good idea!

Juvenile News SCHOOLS SUPER SEVENS This seasons Kerry National Schools Super Sevens came to a conclusion on Thursday evening last with the Boys Finals night before a large attendance at the Presentation Gym on another exciting night of basketball. Super Sevens Cup Final Scoil Nuachabhail 22 Fossa 8 An impressive first half performance laid the foundations for Nohoval as tournament favourites secured the Cup title. Fossa had a great run to the final and had defeated the Ballymac side in overtime in the earlier group stages but there was no mistake this time. Nohoval had strong performances on the night from Sean & Tim Pollman Daamen and James Bailey. The young Fossa boys battled hard but couldn’t break down the strong defence of Nohoval despite the best efforts of Patrick Lyons, Rian Colleran, Jack Clifford and Sean Dineen. Captain James Bailey accepted the trophy to add to their recent Christmas Blitz win also. Super Sevens Shield Final Scoil Nuachabhail 12 Gaelscoil Faithleann Killarney 11 A thrilling shield final saw nothing between these schools with the Ballymac 5th class boys securing the second title of the night but only just in a game that neither side deserved to lose. The Ballymac side got off to a good early start with great baskets by Darragh Sweeney and Donal Daley but great baskets by Jack Lynch, Ronan Coffey and Harry Byrne but it was not to be as time ran out and a basket by Micheal Culloty secured the Shield title. Super Sevens Plate Final Meentogues 13 Raheen 12 A local derby contest between these two rural East Kerry schools produced a very exciting finish as Raheen produced a late comeback but Meentogues survived the late pressure. Meentogues thanks to good baskets by Captain Mark O’Leary with 6 points took a good lead by the early stages of the second half but Raheen responded well and reduce the arrears thanks to the excellent Tommy

Bowler but time just ran out and Meentogues claimed the Plate title to great celebrations at the final buzzer. Youths League Final: Killarney Celtic 2 Fenit Samphires 2 Celtic were the better side in the first half and went 2-0 up through the effervescent Stephen McCarthy, but credit to a great Fenit comeback and they reeled us in in the second half. It should make for a great replay, but with the full and immediate co-operation of both clubs, it has been agreed to defer the game until after Leaving Cert. exams. Devlin hit the net following well-despatched corners and Sean Doherty was coolness personified with our fourth goal late on to seal the victory and the title. U16 Premier: St. Brendans Park 2 Killarney Celtic 0 Unfortunately it was a different story in the final league game, with Park putting in one last great display to take the title with the very last game. C’est la vie, Celtic finish just behind them after an absorbing and intriguing battle between two great teams all season – well done to both teams all the way. U15 Premier: Tralee Dynamos 2 Killarney Celtic 4 With the title race very tight, Celtic needed a win here and got it from a great team performance. Ryan Kelliher (2), Michael Lenihan, and Evan Lyne got the crucial goals and a win or draw against Park in the last game could seal the title for us – but a play-off could well be required yet! U15 Div One: Killarney Celtic 3 Ballyhar Dynamos 0

Unfortunately Ballyhar were unable to field in our final game of the season, not how we would have wanted it to end but it can happen to any club at this time of year. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

It’s been a weekend of comebacks WELL, after a rather mundane opening round of the Garvey’s SuperValu Senior Football Championship, the competition certainly sprang to life in Round 2 last weekend where three of the eight games went to extra time and the standout fixture of the weekend, the meeting of the champions of the past two years South Kerry and Austin Stacks, ended in stalemate in Caherciveen. An Ian Galvin goal saw the reigning champions lead by 1-8 to 0-5 at the break but a goal by David Mannix saw Stacks fight back to level the game and force extra time. The visitors held a slender lead entering the final moments before Bryan Sheehan landed a free from long distance to level it up and take the game to a replay in Austin Stack Park on this Saturday evening at 6.30pm. Elsewhere in the winners group, Dr Crokes got a rare fright from St Kieran’s in Cordal before emerging victorious by the minimum margin but the other Killarney side, Legion, came unstuck in their visit to Kenmare. Meanwhile Mid Kerry had a Houdini-like escape to victory against a Dingle side who led by all of eleven points with the game entering the final straight. Mid Kerry snatched a draw and then went on to qualify for a quarter-final place with a two point victory after the obligatory extra time. In the losers group, Milltown-Castlemaine caused a shock when defeating East Kerry after extra time in Killorglin thus eliminating the Divisional side from the competition. Rathmore were pushed all the way by St Brendan’s before they progressed with four points to spare and Kerins O’Rahillys are also through to Round 3 following a two-goal victory over Feale Rangers. Meanwhile, West Kerry came from behind to oust Kilcummin by a five points margin.

Round 7 is fixed for Tuesday night. East Region Under 16 League Division 5 Final Listry/Keel and Kenmare played the Division 5 Final in the East Region Under 16 League last Friday night in Kenmare. The home side proved the stronger after a fast moving sporting game, which was evenly balanced for much of the opening half. A Cian Ó Connog goal on the twenty first minute, gave Kenmare a lead 1-7 to 1-2 at the break. The turning point came in the second half, when Kenmare hit a purple patch and built an unassailable lead, with two goals and four points, 3-11 to 1-4 with twenty minutes remaining. Listry/Keel battled to the final whistle and notched up eight pints to tow for Kenmare; Final score: Kenmare 3-13 Listry/Keel 1-12

KERRY HURLERS

The Kerry senior hurlers made their exit from Leinster Senior Championship round robin series last Sunday when they went down by 8 points to Offaly, 3 – 19 to 0 – 20. This also brings the curtain down on their competitive season for 2016.

REPLAY – EAST REGION U16 LEAGUE – DIVISION 4 FINAL Glenflesk 4-10 Gneeveguilla 2-09 Glenflesk took the title after an exciting and entertaining replay in the East Region U16 Division 4 Final. Glenflesk had a purple patch, Sean Doherty crashed two stunning goals to the net. A brace of points a piece left the half time score Glenflesk 2-6 Gneeeguilla 1-5. COUNTY JUNIOR LEAGUE Kilcummin V Na Gaeil Friday 27th May in Kilcummin COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 2 Kilcummin 1-10 West Kerry 1-15 Our senior team bowed out of this year’s County Championship in Kilcummin on Saturday last going down to a West Kerry side who were determined and impressive. Our team gave us two contrasting performances in either half. The first half was full of fast free flowing football with some

fine scores numerous chances created and a half time lead of 7 points. The second half saw us struggle throughout and only manage two points in a period where the opposition scored nine points without reply. However there was a lot to enthuse about and the management team will know that with a higher level of fitness and injuries clearing up that this team can repeat that first half performance over an entire game in the season ahead. The focus now turns to preparing for the Club Championship relegation battle, Credit Union Co League and The O’Donoghue Cup where we are drawn away to Glenflesk in the first round. O’SULLIVAN CUP The Junior team face Legion in the early round of the O’Sullivan Cup. UNDER 12 GIRLS Play Southern Gaels at home in the County League on 31st May at 6pm. GARDA VETTING Under the National Vetting Act no person will be allowed to undertake any GAA activity with juveniles without being vetted by the Garda Síochána. It will be deemed to be an offence under the terms of the GAA and the law nationally. The GAA has recently launched a new electronic vetting system which replaces the original paper system. The new e-vetting system is aimed at being a more efficient and streamlined way of being vetted. Our children’s officer Christina Tangney is on hand to assist anyone not vetted with the new system.

The immediate goal of the GAA is to get everyone involved in the Association who is not vetted sorted with immediate effect. Those previously vetted under the old system may then be asked to go through the new process. The club wants to ensure that everyone is vetted in due course.
