THE volunteers that make up Killarney Water Rescue are the community’s unsung heroes and are on constant standby for rescue operations on our lakes. They played a key role in ensuring safety of local residents when flooding hit Glenflesk in the past year. Last weekend we caught up with the team as they

took part in training on Lough Leane in preparation for times when they may be called upon. Killarney Water Rescue is also a key member of the Killarney National Park Liaison Committee and over the years has ensured the safety of locals and visitors alike. “The group have performed rescue operations when people

ABSEILING INTO THE SUMMER AGE is no barrier to pursuing new interests and this was very evident in Killarney over the past week as it basked in the limelight as a playground for several generations. The weekend saw such YouTube gaming sensations as ChooChoosGaming, AshDubh, NettyPlays, AmyLee, InTheLittlewood, MiniMuka and The Gassy Mexican arrive at the INEC where they met with 5,000 delighted young fans. Just days later, the Give it a Go festival unfolded in the same venue. Living up to the name of the festival was Rita McCarthy from Castleisland who gamely abseiled from the roof of the INEC. The programme, organised by Active Retirement Ireland and The Gleneagle Hotel, offered three days of adventure to celebrate ageing and the freedom and opportunities retirement has to offer. Meanwhile, Gardaí have launched a crackdown on anti-social behaviour in Killarney, check out our report, right.

have got lost in isolated areas adjoining the lakes,” said Patsy Hanley, chairperson of the Killarney National Park Liaison Committee. “Luckily not many such incidents have occurred by we in Killarney are fortunate that such a body exists who are trained and on standby.

”Jimmy Sweetman represents the group on the Killarney National Park Liaison Committee, which meets monthly. “Killarney Water Rescue is a local body purely dependent on voluntary income which is raised by flag days, church gate collections and contributions from local benefactors,” added Patsy.

Garda crackdown on anti-social behaviour and underage alcohol consumption KILLARNEY Gardaí have spearheaded an operation to tackle antisocial behaviour. Following complaints from the community, officers embarked on an operation over the past month to identify individuals engaging in such behaviour and the detections also involved underage alcohol consumption and the littering of public areas around Killarney town. Gardaí covertly monitored specific locations associated with this type of activity, including laneways and green areas. “Over 50 individuals were identified,” said Sergeant Dermot O’Connell of Killarney Gardaí.

“Individuals under 18 years of age who were found consuming alcohol will now be processed through the Garda Juvenile Diversion Programme.” Detections were also made relating to controlled drugs. “These individuals will be processed through the courts,” added Sergeant O’Connell. Large groups consuming alcohol and littering in Killarney National Park were also dispersed. “Killarney Gardaí will continue with similar operations throughout the summer period to detect and deter such activity,” said Sergeant O’Connell.

Question What is the new Tax Appeals Commission?

Cleaning up on Cardiac Hill LOCAL walkers on Cardiac Hill were delighted with the results of the Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal clean-up of the area. “Thank you to all the volunteers who worked on the Meitheal to give us these magnificent views and thank God for good ankles, good knees and good health to enjoy them,” said a spokeswoman.

Answer The Finance (Tax Appeals) Act 2015 came into operation on 21 March 2016. This Act gives effect to a revised tax appeals process and established a new independent statutory Tax Appeals Commission (TAC), which replaces the former Office of the Appeal Commissioners. The TAC adjudicates, hears and determines appeals against Revenue decisions concerning taxes and duties under the Finance (Tax Appeals) Act 2015, the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 as amended and other related legislation. There are currently two Appeal Commissioners, appointed by the Minister for Finance for a period of seven years. The main change to the tax appeals process is the requirement that all appeals (other than customs duties and Registration Tax "first-stage" appeals) are now made directly to the TAC and not to Revenue in the first instance. The Appeal Commissioners have sole responsibility for accepting or refusing appeals, although Revenue can raise objections to appeals. If both parties agree, the Appeal Commissioners can make determinations based on written submissions (rather than a full hearing). However, you can insist on a hearing if you wish. By default, all hearings are held in public. However, you can request that a hearing (or part of a hearing) be held in private. To improve the transparency of the appeals process, the Appeal Commissioners are required to publish anonymised versions of all of their determinations. Another significant change is that appeals can no longer be re-heard before a Circuit Court Judge. You can appeal to the High Court on a point of law, but not in relation to the facts. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Man injured in gas explosion A MAN was injured in a gas explosion in Killarney on Friday afternoon. The explosion occurred in a New Street restaurant following a flash from lighting gas in the restaurant’s kitchen. Emergency services attended the scene, responding to a call at 4.10pm. A 26-year-old staff member was treated for injuries he sustained. It is reported that the preparation of bread resulted in the minor gas explosion.

Griffin appointed chairman of Oireachtas Transport Committee KERRY TD Brendan Griffin has been appointed as Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport, by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD. Speaking after the appointment Deputy Griffin, Fine Gael, said: “I am honoured to have been appointed Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport, by An Taoiseach. “I plan to Chair an inclusive and progressive Committee and I look forward to focusing on key issues such as developing our transport infrastructure and services; growing our tourism industry, and boosting sports participation at all levels including elite performance. “Under the new strengthened Oireachtas Committee System, the Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport can make a real impact to benefit Irish society.”

Killarney Celtic Football For All is one of Ireland’s top five

Members of Killarney Celtic Football For All.

THE Killarney Celtic Football For All group has been announced as one of the top five sports clubs in Ireland in the Irish Times Best Sports Club in Ireland 2016. The winner will be announced tomorrow, Saturday, June 18. “We were delighted to be in the top 20, but to see that we have been

shortlisted in the judges’ top five is amazing,” said one of the group’s co-ordinators, Jane O’Donoghue. “We are very lucky to have brilliant, dedicated coaches and amazing players on our team. We are thrilled for the players, coaches and parents and this is a huge achievement.” The club entered the competition

in a bid to get the word out locally and nationally about the FAI Football For All club programme, added Amelia Tucker, co-ordinator. “This programme is so well worth being involved in just to see children and young players enjoy soccer in a fun and friendly environment,” said Amelia. “We would not like to be

the judges to have to pick a winner and runner-up as all five clubs in the top five are very deserving.” Almost 3,000 people nominated close to 2,000 clubs. Since nominations closed in mid-May, researchers and judges have been visiting the top contenders.

Community urged to lend its support to microtrack ALL are urged to get on their marks to support the Killarney microtrack project. The committee behind the facility plans to create an enviable amenity for people of all abilities and is seeking the support of businesses. Now is the time to get behind the microtrack and all-weather pitch which will be located at St Brendan’s College, New Road Killarney, said spokesman Jerry Griffin. “The project is intended to benefit members of the wider sporting community,” said Jerry. “We are out now in the community seeking donations from the business community and those who can donate.” An exciting crowd funding project is also due to take place shortly. “We have meant business from the start and 7000 people have taken part in our events from all over Ireland to support us,” added Jerry. “Now the parish pride of Killarney and beyond and community spirit can be demonstrated! Come on, Killarney, let's look after the youth and all aspects of community.” Nearly 1,400 students and their teachers had pep in their step in April as they got on their marks for the AIB School Fitness Challenge in Killarney National Park. St Brendan’s College along with Killarney Valley AC hosted the event with huge support from AIB. Primary and secondary school pupils arrived from the locality and beyond to walk and run and meet their heroes, Kerry football stars Colm Cooper and James O’Donoghue, Jessie Barr, international 400m hurdler, 2012 Olympian and a 2016 Olympic hopeful, and national indoor 800m champion and Rio 2016 Olympic hopeful Niall Tuohy. The next big fundraising event for the community amenity is the Killarney 10-mile on September 24. Donations to the project can be made to South/East Kerry Community Rural Track Ltd.

Johnny Buckley teams up with Shrone’s young football stars EXCITEMENT reached fever pitch at Shrone National School on Wednesday as Johnny Buckley put the pupils through their paces in an eagerly anticipated coaching session. The students are currently very busy working on achieving their first Active Flag and as luck would have it, one of the junior infant pupils, Jessica Doherty, won a prize in Daly's Supervalu which included training for herself and her schoolmates led by the Kerry and Dr Crokes star. As well as that, the school received SuperValu Kits for Kids training gear. “This is invaluable as it helps the pupils in various sporting activities as they strive to achieve their very first Active Flag. Our sincere thanks to Daly’s Supervalu, Johnny Buckley for a wonderful training session and our congratulations to Jessica who won the prize,” said school principal Michelle Murphy. Jessica was delighted to meet her hero, who presented her with a signed Kerry jersey. All local primary schools were invited to enter the contest at Daly’s SuperValu, which has held it for the past seven years. “The competition attracted a bumper entry as always, with schools entering from across the locality. As an extra bonus this year, the winning school received SuperValu Kits for Kids training gear,” said Denis Tucker of Daly’s SuperValu. The kit included 10 training balls, 24 water bottles with 4 carriers (6 bottles per set), 20 training bibs, a speed ladder, a sports marker set with 40 markers and a large kit bag. The competition is organised to coincide with SuperValu sponsoring the GAA AllIreland Football Championship.

Council seeks assistance in identifying bathing waters

Pupils enjoying the training session at Shrone National School.

Killarney Advertiser 17.06.16

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying bathing waters in the county. Local authorities must identify official bathing areas in their area every year so that they can be monitored for safety, water quality and their level of use. The local authority is asking people who swim at beaches, lakes and rivers to tell them if they think they should maintain existing bathing waters designations or give a new official bathing area designation to areas that are commonly used for

swimming, but not identified at the moment. Under European and Irish law, local authorities must identify bathing waters each year so that these areas can be monitored to ensure they meet stringent microbiological water quality standards. In some cases, the official bathing areas are also the areas where local authorities focus their resources providing lifeguards during the summer season. These laws also require that the local authority prepares detailed

descriptions or profiles for each of the identified bathing water sites that describe not just the bathing area but also areas in the surface water's catchment area that could be a source of pollution. If you wish to propose your favourite beach/river etc as a new bathing water site or comment on an existing site contact Kerry County Council, Environmental Services on 066-7162000 or email environ@kerrycoco.ie The closing date for submissions to Kerry County Council is July 28, 2016.

Just hang in there and give it a go!

IT WAS a case of action stations for Rita McCarthy from Castleisland as she abseiled from the roof of the INEC, Killarney, on Tuesday. Rita was one of many enthusiastic participants in the Give it a Go festival organised by Active Retirement Ireland and The Gleneagle Hotel and sponsored by Hidden Hearing. Give it a Go took place over three days and celebrated ageing and the freedom and opportunities retirement has to offer. Motorcycling, surfing, abseiling and mountain biking are just some of the activities on offer. Garda warning about mobile phone scam GARDAÍ in Kerry and the communications regulator, ComReg, have warned of a mobile phone scam, which involves a muffled call from an apparently distressed woman looking for help. The public has been urged to be aware of receiving calls from 252 44 number. The call is followed by a missed call message. If you call

this number back, you will be charged. “It is a scam and will clear your credit if you ring it back,” said a spokesperson. There is concern in particular that people may be more inclined to call back unfamiliar numbers at this time seeing as many will have friends and relatives attending Euro 2016 in France.

Kerry’s largest public water supply to get €30m upgrade THE contract has been awarded for a €30m upgrade of the largest public water supply in Kerry. Kerry County Council has announced that following a tendering process, Glan Agua Ltd has been approved to complete the project which will see a major upgrade of the county’s Central Regional Water Supply Scheme. The awarding of the contract follows the announcement by Irish Water in March of an investment of €30m in the Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme – including the development of a new water treatment plant at Lough Guitane near Killarney. The new scheme will ensure a safer and more secure drinking water supply for 62,000 residents – almost half of the population of the entire county. The Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme provides water to nine water supply zones, all of which are currently on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List (RAL) arising from the absence of a robust treatment system, something which will now addressed through the new scheme. “The new facility will provide 51 million litres of water per day to the communities which it serves across Kerry. This is absolutely essential investment for the benefit of the health and welfare of the people of County Kerry,” said John Breen, Director of Water Services with Kerry County Council. The contract involved is for DBO (Design, Build, Operate) with work underway on the design of the new water plant. It is anticipated the work on the ground will begin in the autumn with completion expected within two years.

Killarney’s INEC transformed into gamer’s paradise Virtually in the zone: Enjoying the virtual reality games at the Insomnia Gaming festival at the INEC. PICTURES: VALERIE O'SULLIVAN

A CHANCE to explore new worlds attracted some 5,000 gamers to Killarney at the weekend as they descended on the INEC for the first-ever Insomnia Gaming Ireland Festival. The INEC was transformed in to a gamer’s paradise and visitors travelled from all over Ireland, the UK and even as far afield as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hungary and the US for the three-day event – the first of its kind in Ireland. The Minecraft Zone, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive demos were some of the most popular attractions, while the interactive stage shows featuring YouTube Stars were at full capacity each day. Insomnia Ireland was hosted by Multiplay, organisers of the UK’s largest gaming festival, Insomnia, and a subsidiary of GAME Digital plc (“GAME Digital”), the UK’s leading video gaming specialist. “We’re thrilled with the massive response to our first event in Ireland,” says Craig Fletcher, founder and CEO of Multiplay. He added: “Gaming is a form of escapism, a place to explore new worlds, and a way of socialising with friends you don’t get to on a day-to-day basis. We were delighted to witness Irish gamers’ passion for all things gaming for the very first time and we look forward to returning in 2017.”

Books of condolence for Orlando victims

The cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Pat McCarthy, signing a book of condolence at County Buildings for the victims of the Orlando tragedy.

Senator Paul Coghlan elected Leas-Cathaoirleach of Seanad FINE GAEL Kerry senator Paul Coghlan has been elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann by 36 votes to 11. Senator Coghlan was first elected on the Industrial and Commercial Panel in 1997 and is currently serving his fifth term in Seanad Éireann. Senator Coghlan has previously served as the Fine Gael Seanad spokesperson on Defence and has spent the last five years as the Government Chief Whip in the Seanad. Speaking after the vote, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny said, “Senator Paul Coghlan has given exemplary public service in Seanad Éireann for nineteen years. He will bring a wealth of experience with him to the role of Leas-Cathaoirleach and I know that he will work well with Cathaoirleach Denis O’Donovan to ensure the smooth running of the 25th Seanad.” Senator Coghlan said, “I am delighted to have been elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, an institution of which I

have been a member for the past nineteen years. It is a great honour to have been elected and I am looking forward to working with all sides of the house throughout the duration of the 25th Seanad. “The 25th Seanad is perhaps one of the most diverse ever in terms of membership and vibrant voices, and I have no doubt that while there will be robust debate, we will also work well together in passing legislation that will positively impact on the lives of Irish people.”

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL opened books of condolence for the victims of the Orlando shootings at its offices in Killarney and Tralee this week. The books of condolence were opened at the Killarney Municipal District Offices (Town Hall) and at County Buildings (Áras an Chontae) in Tralee. Members of the public flocked to sign the books of condolence from 2pm on Tuesday and from Wednesday during office hours (9am to 5pm). Councillor Niall Kelleher made the proposal at the Corporate Policy Group of the local authority on Tuesday morning. President Obama will visit Orlando Thursday to offer support to families of the 49 victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre. Obama, traveling with Vice President Joe Biden, will also meet with emergency medical crews and hospital workers who fought to save the lives of 53 people wounded by terrorist Omar Mateen, killed after a stand-off with police. “This will be, I think, an emotional trip,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, Agence France-Press reported. Obama promised Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to do what he can to help, according to local station News 13. “I was in touch with the president and have been in touch with the White House throughout the course of the last several days,” the mayor told the station. “He indicated that he would like to come visit and comfort and show support and unity with Orlando and the victims.”

Round the house and mind the mountain

RAINDROPS and a generous sprinkling of exuberance were in the air at the weekend for a unique mountaintop set dance that unfolded as part of Killarney Walking Festival. Trekkers clutching bodhráns and tin whistles made tracks up Strickeen Mountain to enjoy a polka set with members of Kilgobnet Biddies Group – and all in aid of Killarney Water Rescue. “It was just the mountain that was dampened by the rain...the spirits were lifted,” said Killarney Walking Festival organiser and photographer Valerie O’Sullivan. The event was co-ordinated as part of the festival’s charity night. “We would like to say a big Strickeen thank you to the Kilgobnet Biddies, and all the walkers who trekked Strickeen for Killarney Water Rescue,” added Valerie. “It was a great night. And in good timehonoured tradition, the sun didn’t oblige!” After the mountaintop set, the trekkers continued the dancing on their descent, at Kate Kearney’s Cottage. Killarney Walking Festival took place from Friday to Sunday and included some new signature treks – The ‘Peaks of the Reeks’ including the iconic Carrantuohill and Coomloughra Horse Shoe Treks, and Caherconree – Ancient fort of Cú Roí Mac Dáire. “The festival is a chance to enjoy a weekend of long relaxing guided walks, and boat trips. The headquarters were The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney,” said Valerie. “It was a chance to discover the hidden valleys, mountains, reeks, lakeshores and all that is beautiful and untamed about Killarney and its famed National Park.” Killarney Water Rescue provides an important voluntary service to the area and it hopes to purchase a 4×4 vehicle for attending all emergencies. John O’Sullivan, Reeks Lodge and Guiding, and Ray and Mary Walsh of Walk with Me were also guides at the festival.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

‘It is unacceptable that an unelected body demands changes to our Constitution’ IT IS with shock that I again see the UN demanding the Republic of Ireland change their Constitution to correspond with the UN's belief system. Ireland has a Constitution based upon a value system and tradition that is integral to the character of the country. It is unacceptable that an unelected body demands this change. It can criticise but not demand change. It must respect our tradition. The Constitution values life and our current legislative basis and medical practice honours this value. It is accepted that always decisions are difficult and painful around abortion but this does not mean that the Constitution and the right to life of the unborn and handicapped are not worth defending. Rather than demanding change the UN should be supporting Ireland and its Constitution.

Article 3 of the UN Charter of Human Rights is the inalienable right to life. All options must be exhausted rather than relying on abortion and all supports and care needs to be given even when it costs dear so that life is protected. We need a culture of life and love, not despair and expediency. In our Constitution we have a treasure of great price which is not outdated but absolutely valid. We should not be dictated to by others who do not share our high values. It is with regret that I see the president and his wife also inappropriately advocating a pro-abortion stance. As unelected representatives this is not within the remit of their positions. They should desist from promoting their personal views. Joseph Green, Ballycasheen Heights, Upper Park Road, Killarney

Tamsin and John say ‘I do’ BY EVE KELLIHER

S

CENIC Dromquinna Manor in Kenmare was the backdrop to r a superrelaxed and enjoyable celebration as Tamsin Walsh and John Riney exchanged vows. Bill Chase led the Humanist ceremony after which Tamsin, originally from South Africa and Trim, Co Meath, and John, from Tuosist, Co Kerry, posed for the camera of Hilary Herbert. The reception took place in the same venue. “Our main reason for choosing to have this kind of ceremony is that we would be able to write our own words and most importantly, include our son; it was as much his day as it was ours,” said Tamsin. The couple met in Dublin and then moved to Tuosist, where their son Jack was born in 2014. “We initially met online, but after a couple of months of emailing back and forth, we finally met for our first date on March 4, 2012, and went for tapas in Temple Bar, it really was a case of sparks flying and about a week later we made ourselves official to friends and family and as they say, the rest is history,” said Tamsin. John popped the question on Tamsin’s 28th birthday in January 2014. Local musician Nick Ryan performed during the drinks reception at Dromquinna Manor while Truly Diverse ensured the dance floor remained full and DJ Pat Casey then took up the musical baton. “My youngest sister Megan Walsh was maid of honour and one of my longest-standing friends from South Africa, Candice Sonderup, flew over from Australia to fulfil her role as bridesmaid,” said Tamsin. “John's brother, Michael Riney, was best man and his friend Donald Lynch was groomsman. Our son Jack Riney was pageboy and our niece Ciara Ni Chearbhaill was flower girl.”

BOTOX® AND ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS Anti-wrinkle injections can be effective in reducing deep wrinkles, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

BOTOX® and other anti -wrinkle injections are a form of Botulinum toxin, which causes muscle to relax. Targeted application of anti-wrinkle injections can be effective in reducing deep wrinkles in the lower and upper forehead as well as wrinkles around the eyes, or so called “crow’s feet”. The reduced muscle movement allows the skin to rejuvenate with a reduction in wrinkle formation, and a smoothening of existing wrinkles. Relaxation of the targeted areas becomes apparent after 7-10 days with maximum effect being reached after 14 days. Results can last 3-4 months, regular application of Botulinum toxin can offset the aging process, resulting is a more youthful, fresher appearance.

What exactly is Botox®?

Botox® is a toxin that temporarily weakens the muscles that gather your skin into folds, making it crease-proof enough to prevent wrinkles becoming established. A doctor can pinpoint which muscles to weaken. When injected, it attaches itself to the target muscle. Once it wears off, normally after about four months, the muscles regenerate and regain enough strength to start creasing up your skin again.

Does Botox hurt?

No! We use very small, tiny even, needles to administer the anti-wrinkle injections. And our doctor are experts at what they do, often the treatment is over and done with before the patient knows it. We are that good at what we do!

How long does Botox last?

Typically Botox lasts about 3-4 months. Anyone who tells you anything otherwise is misleading you. But you should get a full three months out of it. You get what you pay for. We here at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio offer high-quality Botox treatments; contact 064-6632966.

Travel Bug

Stylish and elegant Düsseldorf

IT’S made its name as a thriving business hub but Düsseldorf is also a must-visit if you enjoy culture, art and fashion. A direct flight from Cork Airport with Aer Lingus takes just an hour and forty minutes. From there, you can simply take the “Sky Train” from the airport to the main railway station, Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof, and set off on your adventure. We started our tour with visit to Düsseldorf's Old Town. Here you can enjoy the shopping and sightseeing as you stroll along the pedestrianized streets and, of course, indulge some people-watching from a perch in one of the many appealing cafes. The focal point of the Old Town is the Marktplatz where you'll find the imposing Town Hall (Rathaus) and a large equestrian statue of Elector John William II erected in 1711. Top tip – the tourist office in the area is staffed with super-helpful advisors. You can also saunter along the promenade by mighty Rhine during your visit

to this part of the city. Serious shoppers will find all manner of designer fashion delights to choose from in the city centre while makeup and tech buffs will also be spoilt for choice. Before stepping on to Düsseldorf's most elegant shopping street, the Königsallee (comparable to Avenue Montaigne in Paris), we took a walk along the old town moat, a scenic 31-meter-wide, tree-lined stretch of water. The red bus tour is also to be recommended. It takes over an hour and really is an ideal opportunity to give you an overview of what you might like to zone in on during your stay. It stops off at numerous attractions including the Japanese Gardens and various topflight art galleries and museums. The North Rhine-Westphalia Art Collection is spread across three locations in Düsseldorf. The largest collection, K20, is located in Grabbeplatz and features a notable collection of paintings by Paul Klee.

Moisture magic for summer

Beauty SPOT

TOPPING up your skin’s hydration levels with a mask or serum is always a welcome treat, particularly at this time of year. We love Vichy’s Quenching Mineral Mask, €18, which is lapped up by dry, sensitive skin. The formula is super-cooling and is enriched with Vichy mineralizing water to act as an additional hydration boost.

Another top treat is Murad Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence, €75. Light as air, this silky hydration

booster attracts and retains water and is the ultimate weapon against dryness. Use it under your regular moisturiser or SPF this summer to keep your skin looking plump and youthful.

Round of applause for Kerry businesswomen

A NUMBER of leading Kerry businesswomen took a well-deserved bow last Friday. The Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards took place in the main ballroom of Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee, and the sold-out event was a real celebration of the county’s entrepreneurial talents. Notable prizes included the business development award which was won by Kate Kavanagh of Exposé Beauty, Tralee, and the family business of the year award, won by Mags and Liz Horgan, Finesse Bridalwear, Listowel. Kate was honoured for her achievements in the last 12 months developing Exposé as a brand and, along with the hardworking team there, expanding the services it offers. Mags and Liz of Finesse were recognised for the excellent service they have provided over the last 16 years in business. The judges were Breda O'Dwyer, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development, Tralee; John Canty, owner of Canty & Co Accountants; and Orla Diffily, PR & Events Consultant.

Spotlight on Killarney dancers

1. Register for an event: By registering for an event, it gives you a target date to train towards and allows you to become focused on training

DANCERS from the Hegarty School of Irish Dancing took part in the Fó-chomortaisí Na Mumhan in Cork last weekend. Over 30 children from the local school competed and they were thrilled with the impressive haul of trophies and medals which they proudly brought back to the Kingdom. “The Fó Chomortaisi (Mini Munsters) is a stepping stone to the bigger event the Munster Championships, when they reach a certain grade,” said Lisa Hegarty of the school. “'Every child matters' is the ethos of our school and while we compete to the highest level, World Championships, it’s not all about competitions such as this. We have plenty children in the class who do not compete. They choose to do their grade exams or travel on our class trips which we organise every second year; non-competitive fun events.” This year the school is representing Ireland in the Lowendar Perran Celtic festival being held in Cornwall in November. “Fundraising events for this festival will take part throughout the next few months in our local area – including a dancethon, flag day and 5k run – and everyone is welcome to join us,” said Lisa.

3.Pace yourself - gradually increase mileage to avoid injuries

2. Pick a training plan that suits you

4. Join a running group: Training groups are a great way to stay motivated and improve your running performance 5. Introduce cross training: Complement your training with swimming, cycling, yoga or Pilates to optimise your strength, flexibility and level of fitness 6. Rest and listen to your body: Rest is just as important as a running session. Your body needs time to recover and repair 7. Keep it interesting - Vary your running routes to include hills, forest trails etc 8. Get the right gear: The right shoes and gear can make the world of difference and it’s nice to look good too 9. Stay healthy: Build a solid base for training with good hydration, a balanced diet and plenty of sleep

AN AIR of excitement filled Killarney last Friday as people from across Ireland converged on the town to venerate the relics of St Anthony of Padua. An estimated 15,000 flocked to St Mary’s Cathedral to venerate the relics. Killarney was one of the venues chosen by the Conventual Franciscan Friars of St Anthony’s Basilica as they toured Ireland with the relics. The day commenced with Mass at 10.30am and veneration of the icon took place all day, until the 6.15pm Mass, celebrated by Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne. Afterwards, veneration continued until 10pm. The arrival of the relics coincided with the St Anthony novena that continued at the Franciscan Friary until June 13, St Anthony’s feast day. “St Anthony is the popular saint for helping people find lost items. He intercedes with those trying to find a job, a home and help in other areas of life,” according to a spokesperson. The relics were accompanied by Fr Mario Conte, editor of the Messenger of St Anthony, the magazine published by the Conventual friars. Free parking was available all day in St Brendan’s College football field.

MUSINGS

“BUT who do you say that I am?” (Luke 9:20) “Like” and “don’t like” is the language of Facebook. We post all kinds of things in the hope of a reaction. Unfortunately, some people find that their identity is wedded to this “virtual reality”. “Like” and “don’t like” dictate how a vulnerable person may feel about themselves on any given day. The number of ‘likes’ received may give a person an instant injection of the feelgood factor or even a sense of self-worth. The opposite, deflating their ego. Now, Jesus appears to be having an identity crisis of his own in this Gospel. It may seem he is fishing for “likes” to boost his ego. Nothing could be further from the truth. After time on his own, and some personal reflection, he wanted to know did anyone discover who he really was. He wanted to know had he made any difference. He had come to the realisation that what was before him was not going to be pleasant. For anyone following him the challenge wouldn’t be easy either. To blindly follow Jesus would be foolhardy. That is why the intellectual pursuit of Jesus alone is not sufficient. We must, like Peter, get to know Jesus personally. “The Truth which faith discloses is a Truth centred on an encounter with Christ, on the contemplation of His life and on the awareness of His presence,” according to Lumen Fidei. The Force was with the adventure racers in Dingle GREAT views over the new home of Star Wars were just some of the attractions offered to the 750 athletes that converged on west Kerry from across the galaxies last weekend. The epic Dingle Adventure Race 2016 took place on the famed peninsula on which the weather Jedis smiled. The very successful one-day multiactivity adventure race consisted of three courses, DAR Full, DAR Sport DAR Mini, biking over the spectacular Conor Pass, climbing Mount Brandon, running the coastal windy roads of Slea Head, with great views of Ceann Sibéal (scene of the new Star Wars shoot), Dún Chaoin, Mount Eagle, and along the iconic Dingle Peninsula. “The race challenges competitors to run, kayak, hike and cycle their way across the Dingle Peninsula,” said Noel O’Leary of Irish Adventures who established the race. Thanking the volunteers and businesses who sponsored the event, he added: “The atmosphere is always fantastic, a real fun event, with plenty of banter and camaraderie.” The winner of the Full DAR event was Killian Heery from Cavan, with an amazing time of 2 hours 57 minutes, 26 seconds. METHOD ASK your fish supplier to gut and cut away the fins but leave the head on. Open the fish and place the herbs inside and season with black pepper. For the salt crust, mix all ingredients in a big bowl. Add flour if it is too liquidy and if it is too brittle add some water and let it rest for 7-10 minutes. Take a small piece of the crust and flatten it. Put it into the preheated oven. If it is too brittle add more egg white. Heat the oven to 180C. Make a finger-thick layer of the salt crust on the bottom of baking tray and place the fish on it. Cover with the rest of the crust. Place the fish in the middle of the oven for 25 minutes or if it is bigger add one minutes per 100g, opposite if it is smaller. To serve, break the crust with a knife at the edges and take the whole top part off. Serve with potatoes and salad dressing.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

COMMON SPECIES THAT CAN TURN DREAM TRIP INTO A NIGHTMARE IT’S that time of year when many of us will be packing our suitcases and boarding a plane. Once the passport is found and you are safely through the gate, you may well have to brace yourself for yet one more challenge before you alight on the tarmac of your holiday destination. Luggage restrictions and fears of flying can pale by comparison when faced with the fellow passenger from hell. You see, this very common species can turn your dream trip into a nightmare. The selfish seat recliner is possibly the worst of this type of passenger. I have spent more flights than I care to remember becoming way too familiar with the overpowering – ahem – aroma of a fellow passengers’ shampoo and de-odorant (or lack thereof) as they fling themselves back from the seat directly in front of me with abandon to loll in my own personal airspace. Kind of like a decadent emperor of ancient Roman times, they usually then proceed to let their mouths hang open looking, to all intents and purposes, as if they are awaiting a minion that will kneel in the aisle and spend the duration of the flight feeding them grapes. If you are really unlucky, said gaping maw will later unleash resonant snores. That’s a best-case scenario. Often you will find yourself crunched up like a pretzel as you contort yourself to accommodate the rude space hog in front while enduring the additional annoyance of a kicker behind you.

These active and energetic creatures are also known to frequent cinemas and theatres. Instead of honing their skills and becoming a sharpshooter on the soccer pitch, they prefer to concentrate their talents on attempting to bore a hole with their toe into the backs of seats in front of them. Bang, kick bang – on a good day it is merely annoying to the point of being unbearable but usually it can escalate into actually inducing nausea in the unfortunate seated in front of them. That usually comes when they also use their hands to suddenly rock the back or your seat. Who needs turbulence? Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Let us know your views at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

SYMPATHY

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the innocent people deliberately, cruelly and wantonly murdered in Orlando last Sunday night. Forty nine innocent people were killed and 53 injured in an attack on a gay club in Orlando on Sunday night when a killer armed with an assault rifle attacked unarmed, innocent people who were just having fun and were no threat to anybody. These people had simply gone clubbing, to have some fun and they ended up lying dead in hospital morgues for some insane reason or other. Their lives were cut short by an armed assassin who targeted Pulse, a gay club in Orlando, a town associated with fun, adventure, wonder and awe and which we all know and love as the home of more than a dozen theme parks and a place people associate with good clean fun. And that is all those people wanted out of their lives on that fateful Sunday night. They went out to enjoy themselves and have some good clean fun in a city synonymous with some of the good things in life & never ' expected to have a rendezvous with death. They went to party with family and friends never thinking such violence and hatred in such a happy place would add new terror to sudden & unexpected death. We wish to express our deepest sympathy to the people of the United States, the State of Florida and the city of Orlando in their time of inexpressible grief.

Philip Cairns investigation update and appeal for information

AS PART of the ongoing investigation into the case of missing person Philip Cairns in 1986, a 25-year anniversary appeal was circulated in 2011. As a result of this appeal several members of the public came forward and have been liaising with the investigating team on an ongoing basis. In May of this year a statement was made by one of those who came forward to the investigating Gardaí at Rathfarnham Garda Station. Aspects of this statement resulted in the opening of new lines of inquiry. Superintendent Peter Duff said: “From our recent enquiries I believe there are people who were young at the time and may have information in relation to Philip’s schoolbag and for whatever reason did not come forward. I am conscious that following to the passage of time and changing circumstances that these people may now be in a position to assist us. I want to reassure anyone who comes forward that they will be treated sensitively and discreetly by investigating Gardaí. He added: “I am again appealing to anyone who has information in relation to Philip’s school bag and have yet to come forward, to contact Rathfarnham Garda station on 01-666 6500, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.”

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD WONDERS OF THE NIGHT SKY LOST Sometimes, when you look up at the night sky, there's a good chance you will not be able to see what you’re looking for. That's because we're enshrouded in an artificial haze of light that is blocking the night sky, a phenomenon scientists call light pollution. Scientists believe one-third of humanity cannot view the Milky Way; this includes 80% of Americans and 60% of Europeans, because city lights are creating fogs of light pollution, according to a new study published in the journal of Science Advances. An international team of scientists created a world atlas of artificial sky luminance that details how light pollution is permeating our planet. This light is obscuring our vision of the stars, celestial events and the Milky Way — the galaxy that contains our solar system. Although there are a few patches of pristine dark sky still left in the world, 83% of the world's population and more than 99% of the US and European populations live under the bright glow of light pollution. "This is a huge cultural loss with unforeseeable consequences in the future generations," scientist Fabio Falchi, one of the authors of the study, says. "Pristine night skies are a precious merchandise." The most light-polluted country in the world is Singapore, the study finds. "The entire population lives under skies so bright that the eye cannot fully dark-adapt to night vision," according to the study. This means people living in the country never have the chance to experience true darkness. The countries with populations least affected by light pollution include Chad, Central African Republic, and Madagascar. More than three-quarters of people in these countries are living under pristine night sky conditions. The findings shows that light pollution is a global issue, and many countries are affected by a fog of artificial light. But light pollution doesn't just obscure our view of space. This over-saturation can impact our culture, cause global ecological problems, pose public health issues and create wasteful energy spending, the researchers warn. For instance, artificial light has a direct effect on human physiology and behaviour. For instance, it can alter our circadian rhythm and affect production of some of our hormones, a 2007 medical study found. It can also disrupt our sleep cycle by suppressing melatonin creation and increasing cortisol levels — a hormone that is linked to stress. Researchers found that people living in urban environments were the most affected by light pollution, but what is troubling is that the glow of city lights is creeping into unpopulated areas too. This is important because artificial lights can negatively affect wildlife. For example, streetlights near shorelines can cause baby turtles, who have just hatched, to become disoriented and wander inland instead of into the ocean, causing them to die because of dehydration or exposure to predators, according to research by the Sea Turtle Conservancy. So why has our world been overtaken by light pollution? "Light pollution is also a consequence of the belief that artificial light increases safety on roads and prevents crimes, but this belief is not based on scientific evidence," the study states. In less than a 100 years, artificial lights have transformed the sky. Millions of children will never experience the Milky Way, according to the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), an organization combating light pollution. Light pollution "robs us of the opportunity to experience the wonder of a natural night sky," according to the organization's site.

Toddler’s body recovered after he was killed by an alligator SEARCHERS have recovered the body of a two-year-old boy snatched by an alligator at a Walt Disney World resort in Florida. The boy – named by police as Lane Graves of Elkhorn, Nebraska – was attacked on Tuesday night as he waded in shallow water at the edge of the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney's Grand Floridian resort. The search team grew to 50 people on Wednesday as trappers and divers searched Disney's network of man-made canals, ponds and lakes. At least five other alligators were caught and cut open before they found the killer. A Disney representative said the entertainment giant closed the beaches "out of an abundance of caution". Wildlife officials said the attack was a rarity in a state with an alligator population estimated at around one million.

Man arrested after suspect package found at garda station A MAN in his 40s was arrested in Dublin after a suspect package was found at Store Street garda station on Thursday. A hostel in Dublin city centre was evacuated after the package was discovered. The alarm was raised at around 6.30am. The Army Bomb Disposal Squad were called and arrived around 7am to examine the package. The street was closed to the public, but has since reopened. Jacobs Inn hostel was also evacuated. The Red Luas Line and the Busaras bus station were also sealed off for a time.

South Kerry business enjoys success at ILDN Regional Awards K&T Bakery, based in Caherciveen was this week chosen as one of the three representatives from the Southern Region to go forward to the national finals of the ILDN Enterprise Awards in September. The business which was supported by South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. (SKDP) through the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance Scheme (BTWEA), currently employ 15 people in addition to themselves in the business and expect to expand this number further in the coming year. It has been in operation since October 2014 and currently sells directly to the public and also supplies some local businesses. Business owner Katarzyna Gwis, who is running the bakery along with her husband Tom, said they were delighted and very surprised to get the award. “There was really strong competition from the other 12 businesses in the southern region so we did not expect to be selected,” she said, adding they are now looking forward to taking

part in the national final in Dublin in September. Speaking following the awards ceremony which was held in Cork, SKDP CEO Noel Spillane congratulated Katarzyna Gwis on her success to date and said he hoped they will go on now to win the overall award in September. “This business is an excellent example of the success achieved by many such small businesses in South Kerry supported by SKDP,” Noel said. He added that the BTWEA, administered in the region by SKDP on behalf of the Department of Social Protection, has provided significant opportunities for unemployed people with business ideas to take the first step in developing their own enterprises. “Such small enterprises are the backbone of rural areas such as South Kerry in terms of providing long term employment and it is fantastic that the hard work and success of businesses such as K&T Bakery is recognised though this awards programme,” he said.

LESS SCREEN TIME FOR ‘SHOUTY’ EVANS IF YOU strongly believe “Chris Evans is ruining Top Gear and should be immediately replaced,” break out the celebratory champagne. Reports suggested this week that the BBC appears to have plans to chop Evans’ airtime drastically in future episodes. This news comes as no surprise as the show continued to drop by as much as half a million people per week. Last week’s show mustered a mere 2.37 million viewers, down significantly since the days of Clarkson and co. When the programme debuted, Evans assailed our ears for a whopping 49 minutes. This week, his face appeared for only 29 minutes, which perhaps explains why the show is getting better. Appearing in place of the man who can’t drive are two fellows who can: Rory Reid and Chris Harris. The duo has received high praise from viewers, who have been vocal in their desire for the twosome to be regularly featured on the main programme. The powers that be listened and reacted in kind. Reid confirmed his and Harris' promotion to mainstays in a tweet earlier this week. Evans and Matt LeBlanc will still handle the show's studio links, which means viewers will have to suffer through more of those boring Superstar in a Rallycross Car interviews. BBC’s money-spinner has stopped spinning. That show in its prime was generating £50 million per year purely because of its unique entertainment value, it was more than a car show. Survival of the show is down to Rory Reid and Chris Harris, two genuine credible car guys. The BBC in Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc has failed beyond all expectations.

The old Top Gear personality and chemistry worked, that is missing in bucket loads with Evans and LeBlanc. Chris Evans with all his shortcomings as a “car guy” just doesn’t have the personality (just because you can afford to have a garage full of white Ferraris doesn’t qualify you for the role) and Matt LeBlanc, just about works on his own but he plays the “Joey” role too often and, let’s be honest, could you really take car advice from “Joey” seriously?

Hitching a ride! A GRANDMOTHER in the UK was plagued by a huge swarm of bees for more than 24 hours while driving her car home from a nature reserve. Carol Howarth, 65, was amazed when a swarm of over 20,000 insects flew down onto her silver Mitsubishi Outlander, covering the back end of the car. The incident happened shortly after she had parked her car in the town centre of Haverfordwest, West Wales. While she was away from the vehicle, thousands of bees descended on the boot of her car, causing many passers-by to stop and take pictures of the spectacle. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park ranger raised the alarm when he spotted the swarm on the parked. Concerned that the insects might be destroyed with pesticide, the ranger contacted two members of Pembrokeshire Beekeepers' Association, who came to help capture the swarm. However, after returning to her car, Mrs Howarth drove home believing the problem had been resolved, only to discover on the following Monday morning that the swarm had followed her and were again covering the car. She was then forced to contact the beekeepers for a second time, who finally managed to remove the swarm later that day. One theory was that the queen was trapped in my car and the swarm were following but the beekeepers couldn't find the queen anywhere in the car. Or perhaps they just liked the car.

Community unites to help Anthony battle Lyme disease

The Morris family with Mick O’Connell, Jim Junior, Jim Senior, Mick O’Connell, Sheila Morris, Sinead O’Sullivan and Mary Morris.

Spa and Valentia join forces in reunion KERRY legend Mick O’Connell, accompanied by his former colleague on the pitch, Cllr Mick Gleeson, led a large contingent of cyclists from Valentia and across Kerry on Saturday as they made their way to Spa GAA clubhouse. They were out in force to support a fundraiser in aid of local man and former footballer Anthony Morris who is receiving

treatment for Lyme disease. Club chairman Ger Mangan welcomed the group and thanked them for this much-appreciated gesture. Micheal Lyne, Valentia, recalled the many great games between the clubs and then presented Ger Mangan with an inscribed slab of Valentia slate as a memento of the occasion. John Shanahan (a former play-

ing colleague of Anthony’s with Kerry) and Mick O'Connell also wished Anthony well with his treatment in the USA. “We would like to say a special word of thanks to the Spa club members who supported and stewarded the event and to the members of the ladies committee and officers who provided refreshments,” said spokeswoman Anne Holland.

TODAY, Friday, June 17, will see walkers step it out in a bid to help Anthony Morris fight chronic Lyme disease. A fundraising walk, featuring 5k and 10k routes, is being organised by the Morris family with the support of Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan, the GAA and other sporting organisations including Flesk Gun Club. “All monies raised will go towards Anthony’s vital treatment,” said Jim Morris. “June 17 will mark one month into the nine-month stay since Anthony has begun his treatment in Washington DC.” Jim added: “Since being confirmed with contracting the disease, after being sick and misdiagnosed for the past eight years, this will be first time Anthony has a treatment option that will significantly improve his quality of life.” A once very strong, fit and active man and a tough former Kerry footballer, he is now a shadow of his former self, added Jim. “He is weak, in constant pain and suffering neurological symptoms affecting his memory, speech and general mental sharpness. It is now attacking his brain, his spinal fluid, his nervous system, his heart and his liver,” added Jim. People can follow Anthony’s story on Facebook “Help Anthony Morris Fight Lyme Disease” and on www.yourcaring.com/ anthony-morris-533010. Registration will begin from 6.30pm in the Liebherr car park from there it will proceed into the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and Killarney National Park, along the Fossa Way and finishing up back at Liebherr car park. People wishing to fill in sponsorship cards can contact a member of the Morris family or Jim on 086-0893466. There is no charge for participating but all donations will go straight to helping Anthony on his long journey ahead.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Kerry advance to another Munster Final THE Kerry senior footballers comfortably advanced to another Munster final when disposing rather easily of the Clare challenge to win by an 11-point margin at sunny Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday afternoon last (2-22 to 0-17) before a fine attendance of 11,500. From the moment Colm Cooper’s speculative shot went all the way to the Clare net within a minute of the throw-in, there was never any doubt as to who the winner would be though Clare it must be said, stuck to their task to put up a very respectable score on the day. Stephen O’Brien and Paul Geaney were in terrific form up front for Kerry who led by seven points, 2-10 to 0-9, at the interval and Kerry kept that seven points margin between the sides throughout the second half. Welcome news for the Kerry management was the return of Anthony Maher after a long lay-off with a hip injury while James O’Donoghue also saw a return to action with his club, Legion, against Dr Crokes in a League game on Sunday morning. Debutantes, Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Tadhg Morley, acquitted themselves well in the half back line. So Kerry progress to a Munster final on July 3 but who would have believed that Tipperary is who will provide the opposition and not Cork? Tipp, despite losing 11 of their squad this year for all sorts of reasons, upset the form book and surprised Cork in Semple Stadium to record their first win over the Rebels since 1944. The last time these sides met in a final was in 1998 in Thurles when Kerry won by 0-17 to 1-10 with Maurice Fitzgerald kicking 10 points. The sides met last year of course in Semple Stadium when Kerry won on a 2-14 to 2-8 scoreline but Tipp are now managed by former Kerry and Austin Stacks player Liam Kerins who succeeded Peter Creedon at the helm at the start of the season. The Munster final will be played in Fitzgerald Stadium with a 2pm throw-in and it will be preceded by the Minor final between Kerry and Cork at 12 noon.

Kerry Junior smash and grab victory over Limerick

The Kerry Junior team needed a goal deep into injury time to break the resolve of an unlucky Limerick side in the junior semi-final in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. Kerry had started well in both halves, but each time Limerick had reeled in their lead and when the

U14s: Our u14 team played three games this week, two of these games were away to Rathmore and Dr Crokes in the East Kerry League and the third game was at home to Knock/Brosna. On Monday a under strength Currow team travelled to Rathmore to play the home side. A huge effort was put in by the 15 players they had, but unfortunately were defeated on a score line of Rathmore 7-13 to Currow 5-13. Wednesday Knock/Brosna were the opposition. In a good sporting encounter Currow proved to have to upper hand on their opponents winning on a score line of Currow 5-06

While Kerry were about to take on Clare in the first round of the Munster Championship in Killarney on Sunday their ace sharpshooting corner forward and recently returned from injury James O'Donoghue was playing scintillating football for his club Legion against Dr Crokes in the adjacent grounds. Treaty side goaled at the three quarter stage it looked as if the reigning champions, albeit with a new team, were on their way out of this year’s campaign, However they fought to the final whistle and were rewarded when Adrian Spillane punched Paul O’Donoghue’s long delivery to the net in the 75th minute to record a 2-16 to 1-16 victory. Kerry will now play Cork in the Munster final on Thursday, June 30, in Austin Stack Park at 7.30pm.

Credit Union Senior Football League Roundup

The Credit Union Senior Football Leagues are certainly taking shape with the four rounds scheduled for June sure to go a long way towards deciding the fortunes of many clubs for the coming year. Round 5 last weekend coupled with Round 6 this coming weekend will shove the Leagues past the half way stage. In Division 1, an injury time equaliser by Milltown-Castlemaine cost Templenoe their 100% League record on home to Knock/Brosna’s 1-06. The final game of the week saw Currow travel to Lewis Road on Sunday last to play Dr Crokes. In a close match Dr Crokes had the edge on our team and went on to win on a score line of Dr Crokes 2-13 to Currow 3-07. Next game is away to Ballymac on Wednesday 15th June in Ballymac. U12s: The final round of the County League was held on Sunday 12th June where Currow played host to Castlegregory. In a good sporting contest Currow proved to be the stronger team and went on to win on a score line of Currow 5-09 to Castlegregorys 2-12. U10s: District GAA Go Games u10 blitz recently took place in Currow on Tuesday 7th June, teams that took part

soil meaning that Dr Crokes, following victory over local rivals Legion on Sunday morning, go top of the League on their own with 10 points. Dingle on 8 Points and Desmonds, a point further back, stay in touch following respective victories over Kilcummin and Kenmare. So going into the half way stage, both Kenmare and Legion are pointless at the foot of the table with John Mitchels (1 point), Kilcummin and Glenbeigh-Glencar both on two points, also struggling. This weekend will see a four-pointer at Kenmare where John Mitchels are visitors, while Legion will want to make home venue count against Desmonds. Leaders Dr Crokes travel to Kerins O’Rahillys and Templenoe are at home for the second week in a row, this time against Glenbeigh-Glencar. In Division 2, Spa, thanks to a fourpoint win over Listry, join St Marys, who did not play last weekend, at the top of the table on eight points each. Rathmore entertained Glenflesk on this Wednesday evening in a deferred in this blitz were Currow, Castleisland Desmonds, Cordal, Ballymac and Scartaglin, all teams played two games on the night. U6s, U8s, U10s: Training continues this coming Saturday at 10am.

Dr Crokes

County League Division 1 - Round 5 Dr Crokes 1-15 Legion 0-9 Played in Lewis Road on Sunday 12th of June, a good second half display was responsible for our nine point victory over Legion, 1-15 to 0-9. Round 5 game. This weekend, joint leaders, St Marys visit Glenflesk while Spa are home to Laune Rangers, The An Ghaeltacht V Listry game goes back to August 5. In Division 3, Currow maintained their good form with a five points victory over Annascaul and are out on their own on nine points at the top of the table. In Division 4, Na Gaeil and Fossa continue to set the pace at the top of the table with full points following victories over Churchill and Ballymac respectively last weekend. Firies, with a game in hand, and Ballymac are four behind on six points. At the bottom, Renard and Lispole are on one point each while Churchill, Moyvane and Valentia are a point better off but there are a number of back games in this division. This weekend, joint leaders, Fossa are at home to Scartaglen while Na Gaeil travel to Valentia.

The result could have gone either way but we welcome the win. We are now fifth in the table. JUVENILE HURLING - U8 A number of Go Games Blitzes for U8’s in the South Kerry region have been scheduled over the summer. The first will be next week, Thursday 16th June in Dr. Crokes @ 7:00pm sharp. The following week, they will travel to Kenmare on Thursday 23rd June. Competitors Cliodhna Sweeney and Kieran Nagle carried the Kilcummin banner in the opening parade before a big attendance. Following this opening ceremony the main events got underway. First in action were our U8 girls with Emma O’Donoghue & Kate Rahilly running well. In the U8 boys Jack Teahan competed in the 60m with a particularly large attendance in this race. Rory O’Connor also excelled in this age group, showing much promise for years ahead in qualifying for the quarter finals. We had many runners in the U10 age group with Cliodhna Sweeney, Sadhbh Teahan and Dan Rahilly running strongly in the 100m race U10. Kieran Nagle performed superbly to progress through the heats and quarter finals in this race. An excellent run in the semi finals saw Kieran finishing 5th. Ava Grace Moynihan also performed well in the 200m U10. In the U8 category Cillian O’Leary performed superbly coming second in his heat and qualifying in his quarter final on Saturday evening for Sundays semi-final. Here another strong run saw Cillian qualify for the U8 60m final where he finished 5th in an outstanding display. On to the U12s where in the 100m Aimee Sexton stormed through her heat and only lost out narrowly in the quarter final on Saturday evening in what was a very competitive event. In the 600m event Ewan Evans ran well in the boys race while in the U12 girls race Olwyn Evans, Molly O’Connor and Saoirse Sweeney also performed well. When it comes to the U14 age group the athletes usually peter out, however this year proved different with Kilcummin having a few boys in this category. In the sprint event Turlough O’Connor put in a strong performance while we had two boys taking part in the 800m event. Micheál Sweeney and Cian Foley both had to be at their best and so they were and Kilcummin had two runners through to Sundays final where excellent performances saw Cian finish 6th and Micheál 9th in a very strong field. The relay events are always hugely entertaining and an exciting team event to watch. Kilcummin had 3 relay teams prepared and were well up for this following good training over the

previous weeks. In the U10 mixed relay Cliodhna Sweeney started her team off well, passing to Sadhbh Teahan, then Dan Rahilly and finally Kieran Nagle. This team progressed to the semi final on Sunday and these four individually talented athletes gave their all but lost out narrowly on a final place. The boys U14 relay came in 6th in the final in a tough event. Micheal Sweeney, Dara O’Callaghan, Cian Foley and Turlough O’Connor all put in terrific runs to come home in sixth position. Our U12 girls team of Aimee Sexton, Molly O’Connor, Saoirse Sweeney & Owlyn Evans also performed well. Though there were no medals, Community Games is all about the participation so take a bow to all our young athletes who put their toe to the line in their Kilcummin singlets and did their parish proud. Well done to all the athletes and to the proud parents that came to support them. Thanks to Eimear Foley who trained the young runners individually and in their respective relay teams over the past few weeks. Finally thanks to Dave O’Leary and all at Kilbrean Park for making their facilities available for training.

SUMMER CAMP The club summer camp will run again this year from Tuesday, August 2nd to Friday, August 5th. GARDA VETTING Under the National Vetting Act no person will be allowed to undertake any GAA activity with juveniles without being vetted by the Garda Síochána. It will be deemed to be an offence under the terms of the GAA and the law nationally. The GAA has recently launched a new electronic vetting system which replaces the original paper system. The new e-vetting system is aimed at being a more efficient and streamlined way of being vetted. Our children’s officer Christina Tangney is on hand to assist anyone not vetted with the new system. The immediate goal of the GAA is to get everyone involved in the Association who is not vetted sorted with immediate effect. Those previously vetted under the old system may then be asked to go through the new process. The club wants to ensure that everyone is vetted in due course. Anyone who needs more information or assistance can contact Christina via email at christina.tangney@mycit.ie or alternatively at 086 1925549. LOTTO If you’re interested in selling some lotto tickets to help raise vital funds for the club, please contact Seánie Culloty at 087 2225325.
