Sport helping ‘break down barriers’ in Killarney

The middle of the street is not a car park TRAFFIC congestion is a challenge that comes as part and parcel of a successful and enjoyable tourist season. But it tends to exacerbate a yearround pastime in this town: that of using the middle of the street as a de facto car park. Homegrown and visiting drivers alike tend to engage in this pursuit. I have come to expect the pull-up-and-stop approach at this stage, as has any driver in this town. But it still manages to rile most of us like nothing else. Can motorists listen once and for all – the middle of a road is not a car park. Locals and visitors familiar with Killarney will surely recognise this frustrating scenario: On a Sunday drive through town last weekend a minibus simply stopped in front of us on East Avenue Road and proceeded to unload its be-
wildered cargo. The driver stood randomly in the middle of the road, for all the world as if he was engaging in a spot of impromptu midday stargazing. And, as his passengers milled about on the road in (understandable) confusion, an accident was narrowly avoided. Even while the (potentially hazardous) scene was unfolding the driver bore an “I saw nothing, I wasn’t there” expression on his beatific, upturned face. I have not noticed the pull-upand-stop-wherever-I-feel-likeit approach as much in other towns. So why is it so common in Killarney? EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

A NEW initiative involving South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd and the Kerry County Board is underway in Killarney aimed at encouraging primary school children different nationalities and backgrounds to take part in GAA games. The project is funded through the Community Support Fund administered by Kerry County Council and the pilot is focused on the Ballydribeen area of Killarney. The three clubs, Spa, Legion and Dr Crokes, are involved with the project which runs over a total of six nights. The community development officer with SKDP, Éadaoin Moynihan, pointed out that the GAA is an integral part of most Irish communities and the aim is to encourage as wide a participation as possible in the sport from a diverse range of backgrounds and nationalities. “Sport helps break down barriers and we hope this initiative will see many more children from different nationalities become involved with our national sport,” said Éadaoin. The PRO of the Kerry County Board, John O’Leary, said the board's health and wellbeing committee see this as a very important initiative. “Kerry GAA is a community based organisation that reaches out to every sector and through this initiative we aim to reach out to children not already involved in clubs,” John said. The Football for all initiative will run two nights a week over the next two weeks and anyone seeking further information or wishing to take part should contact Éadaoin Moynihan on 087-1906450 for further details. It will take place next week on August 22 and 24 and on August 29 and 31.

Question
What is the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance? Answer
The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BSCFA) helps you meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school. You must be getting a social welfare payment or taking part in a training, employment or adult education scheme. In general, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child with your payment. Your children must be aged between 4 and 22 on or before 30 September 2016. If they are aged between 18 and 22, they must be in full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college. Also, your total family income must be below a certain level for your family size. The allowance is €100 for eligible children aged between 4 and 11 and €200 for those aged between 12 and 22. The scheme is open from 1 June to 30 September 2016. The Department of Social Protection pays BSCFA automatically to many customers. This means that they do not have to apply for the payment. If you qualify automatically, you should receive a letter stating when and how your Allowance will be paid. If you do not get an automatic payment you must apply for the Allowance. If any of your children are aged 18 or over, you must apply for the Allowance for them and supply evidence that they are in second-level education (even if automatic payments have issued for other children in the family). You can get application forms in all local social welfare offices and Intreo centres, and on the Department’s website, welfare.ie. When a decision has been made on your application, you will get a letter informing you of this and whether a payment has been awarded. If your application has been successful, you will also be told when and where you can collect the payment. If the Allowance is refused, you can ask for a review of the decision. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Rose rivals and friends take time out CLOSE friends and Rose rivals Danielle O’Sullivan from Killarney and Denise Collins from Ballydaly, Co Cork, enjoyed an afternoon of pampering at The Brehon, Killarney, recently. The Kerry and Cork Roses embark on a hectic schedule of touring this week as part of the International Rose of Tralee Festival, but before heading off the girls enjoyed a morning of spa treatments in The Angsana Spa followed by afternoon tea at The Brehon. “We are very much rooting for both girls and we wish them both the very best of luck,” says Brian Bowler, general manager at The Brehon.

A QUARTET of Kerry footballers’ unique take on the TV phenomenon that is Carpool Karaoke proved a huge online hit at the weekend. Killian Young, Aidan O’Mahony, Marc O Se and Kerry senior captain Bryan Sheehan kicked into melodic action in the style of CBS television host James Corden and his musical guests who sing along to songs while driving in Los Angeles. The four Kerry seniors, all Renault brand ambassadors, switched the streets of LA for scenic Aghadoe as they posed for the camera of Killarney photographer Don MacMonagle after Donagh Hickey Motors, Rathmore, had taken delivery of the new Renault Megane. “Don decided he would have a bit of fun to see what a ‘carpool karaoke’ would look like with all the lads in the all-new Renault Megane,” Brian Quinlan of Renault Ireland told the Killarney Advertiser. “We posted the picture on the Donagh Hickey Facebook page on Saturday and over 24 hours it reached almost 30,000 people and gained almost 700 likes. We called it Car Pool Kerryoke!”

Sky’s the limit for class of 2016 ALMOST 2000 students across Kerry faced a day of reckoning on Wednesday as they opened those all-important envelopes with their Leaving Certificate results. Smiles of relief and joy were to be seen on the faces of parents and students as they gathered around Killarney and Kerry’s second-level schools, waving the much-anticipated sheets of paper with pride. Some 1,989 students sat the Leaving certificate in Kerry – 1,015 female students and 974 male students. Deputy principal of Killarney Community College Stella Loughnane paid tribute to the college’s 80 Leaving Cert students on their “excellent” results. “Natalija Aleksejenko and Syeda Ali continued their strong academic form since the Junior Certificate. Natalija secured 4 A’s and 3 B's achieving 565 points in the Leaving Certificate,” said Stella. St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary principal Roisin Moore and staff also congratulated their Leaving Certificate Class of 2016, as did St Brendan’s College principal Sean Coffey. “It has been a special year on many fronts, in achieving at sport, in achieving at subject competitions and during this week being presented with excellent Leaving Cert results,” he said. “With 20% of the students achieving over 500 points, our school once more sends forth young men into every echelon of third-level education.” Deputy principal Jim O’Brien further recognised the maturity and leadership shown by the group. Elisha Dowling, principal of Brookfield College, was also delighted with this year’s results. “A few of our students got over 600 points and 28% of our students got over 500 points compared to the national average which is 10%,” he said. “Also repeat students did exceptionally well with the average increase being 90 points.” The Intermediate School in Killorglin also reported “fantastic results”, with two students obtaining over 600 points, 20% of students notching over 500 points and over half reaching over 400 points. Killorglin Community College deputy principal Donal O’Reilly said the “future is certainly very bright” for the Leaving Cert students of 2016.

Offaly Rose Emma celebrates her Leaving Cert results
Offaly Rose Emma Kirwan is congratulated on her Leaving Cert results by the Melbourne Rose Meghan Griffin and the Kerry Rose Danielle O'Sullivan. PICTURE: DOMNICK WALSH
ONE of the 55,708 students to receive their Leaving Certificate results on Wednesday was Offaly Rose Emma Kirwan. Emma, from Killeigh, Co Offaly, opened her results ahead of taking to the stage in the first of the qualifying selection nights at the Festival Dome in Tralee. The 18-year-old, who hopes to study aeronautical engineering with a view to becoming an Air Corps cadet, had her results hand-delivered by her mother and father. Emma had to wait until 2.30pm to find out the all-important grades when he parents Grainne and Paddy arrived in Tralee. “My dad’s a bit of a slow driver,” she joked. “I was nervous, mainly about maths, it was a borderline subject for me – whether to stay in higher and ordinary level, and I did higher level, and thankfully it paid off for me.” She added: “I had surprises in a few of my subjects. English was another one, I got an A2 in English which I was shocked by, that’s crazy for me.” Emma’s choice of aeronautical engineering is available in either the University of Limerick or Carlow IT. “I’m speechless now. I wasn’t under a huge amount of pressure, I had to get 380 or 450 points – they could increase or decrease depending on the CAO but I think I’m safe,” she said. Emma was be interviewed by Daithí O Se that night on stage in the Dome in Tralee. As for nerves about the results, Emma said her participation in the Rose of Tralee International Festival is “a great distraction”. “Last night we were all quite tired after we met all of the escorts. I got into bed and conked straight away. I was up at 6.30am thinking ‘oh today is the day’,” she said.

Gathering of the clans in Killarney
EVERY good wish to members of the Bowler, Pearson and Sullivan families who had a grand reunion in Killarney at the weekend. The clan gathered together to celebrate their heritage and honour their ancestors from Droum, Glenbeigh. This was the third family reunion for this clan, the first having been held in Glenbeigh in 2004, followed by one in Chicago in 2010 and back to Ireland this year. Family travelled from Australia, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland and Tunisia as well as the United States. Attendees included children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. “The miracle of our extended family getting together, in a time when our world is in such a divisive era, is indeed remarkable,” said a spokesperson. “Plans are already afoot for another family gathering in 2019, most likely in the US, to be followed by another Irish reunion in 2022.”

Killarney gets in harmony for big sing-off WELL, when Killarney Advertiser caught up with the lip sync artists extraordinaire as they got into the groove ahead of the Killarney Sing-Off, we were fairly impressed. Timing and wiggles were being perfected at the dress rehearsal in The Brehon and it looks like everything will be in place for a dazzling night out on August 25 when these superstars-in-the-making take centre stage at the INEC for Killarney’s first-ever lip sync battle. The event is being organised by family and friends of Anthony Morris, Killarney, who is being treated for chronic Lyme disease. “Anthony’s doctors’ big concern has been an obvious deterioration in his cognitive function and metal sharpness,” said his brother Jim Morris. He has been really struggling to communicate, getting confused and lost for words. This is a result of the Lyme infection affecting his brain and fighting back against the antibiotics.” Anthony’s fiancée Margaret and daughter Roisin are also have become accustomed to the support required of them every day, added Jim. “Seeing the outreach of love and support during this time through the different fundraisers keeps Anthony and his family in high spirits and drives him on to win his own battle,” he said. Tickets for the Killarney Sing-Off can be purchased from Who’s 4 Shoes, 74 High Street Killarney, Charlie Foley’s, 101 New Street, the INEC box office, Gleneagle Hotel and the K Town Bar on Beech Road. You can also contact a member of the Morris family or Jim on 086-0893466.
Children’s yoga classes in Killarney
Yoga teacher Aileen Kingerlee, who is starting classes for children in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service Centre this September, highlights the benefits of the practice
HAVING taught children's yoga in schools and summer yoga camps in Muckross Traditional farms I saw the amazing benefits that yoga brings to children of all ages.
Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents, school pressures, incessant lessons, video games and competitive sports. We usually don’t think of these influences as stressful for our kids, but often they are. Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves.

Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them.
When children learn techniques for self-health, relaxation, and inner fulfilment, they can navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s non-competitive. Fostering cooperation and compassion — instead of opposition — is a great gift to give our children.
If you are interested in starting yoga contact me at 086-0399358. Classes start on Wednesday, September 14.

It’s a full house as Daniel takes a bow in Killarney QUEUES braved the elements as Storm Desmond raged back in December, eager to snap up tickets to Daniel O’Donnell’s shows in Killarney and fans were delighted when the man himself arrived to greet them at the time. Well, there was an equally rapturous reaction as Daniel returned to town for his sellout run at the INEC last week. Tickets for all five shows sold out within hours back in December and INEC and Gleneagle Hotel managing director Patrick O’Donoghue said: “Daniel O’Donnell’s popularity is unfaltering, and once you have attended one of his shows, it is easy to understand why. “We have guests staying with us from as far away as the US and Australia and they are coming to Killarney especially to see Daniel perform. Tickets for all five shows sold out within hours back in December and all our accommodation booked out soon after.” Meanwhile, on Friday the Internet sensation Molly-Kate Sloyan finally met her idol the “real” Daniel O’Donnell who invited her to his sold-out gig. A video of the 23-year-old super fan went viral in February as it showed her reaction to Mario Rosenstock impersonating her idol Daniel during The Late Late Show Valentine’s special. Molly-Kate’s expression switched from delight to disgust when she realised that it wasn’t the real Daniel performing to the audience. To make up for Molly-Kate’s disappointment the Donegal star sent out a special video message inviting her to Friday’s gig. Distance could not stop Mary-Kate from meeting Daniel as she flew especially from Spain to attend the show.

OLDVELOS ANNOUNCES VINTAGE CYCLE AND EXPO FOR KILLARNEY THERE are modern bikes…and then there are vintage steel racers. Cycling has probably never been as popular as it is now in Ireland and many cyclists are discovering or rediscovering the romance of yesteryear through an appreciation of the craftsmanship and beauty of vintage racing bikes. Nominated for Cycling Ireland's Best Leisure Ride in 2015, the OldVelos Vintage Classic is taking place again in Killarney on Saturday, September 17, 2016. The event celebrates the days when bicycles were works of art and when thousands turned out to welcome home the likes of Stephen Roche and Sean Kelly, Ireland’s cycling superstars. Leaving from Randles Bros Nissan Dealership in Killarney at 10am, riders can choose either a 60 or 75 mile loop, spinning through spectacular and challenging countryside including the Black Valley, Bealach Béime, Glencar and Caragh Lake returning to Killarney on the Board of Works road. Both routes are open to riders on vintage racing bikes. Registration €25 on www.oldvelos.com OldVelos encourage participants and the public to converge the afternoon before – September 16 - to enjoy the OldVelos VeloExpo at Randles Bros in Killarney – admission free - and to see the competition for the iBikes Concours D’Elegance prize for ‘best in show’. The Expo also contains memorabilia such as jerseys, memorabilia and photos and continues all day Saturday. The OldVelos Vintage Classic is sponsored by local bike retailer iBikes with the support of Flogas and ESI and hosted by Randles Bros Nissan Dealers. See www.oldvelos.com for more.

Kerry museums benefit from Government funding scheme THREE museums in Kerry are to receive funding under the Local and Regional Museums Funding Scheme 2016. My colleague the Minister for Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, has confirmed to me that three museums in Kerry are to receive funding under the Local and Regional Museums Funding Scheme 2016. Kerry County Museum is receiving €7,500 for the upgrading of the Tom Crean Display. Músaem Chorca Dhuibne has been allocated €1,275 for promotion and display of recent acquisitions. Finally, the Seanchaí has been allocated €2,250 for the Pur-

visitor experience in these museums and to help promote all they have on offer to tourists and local people alike. Every little helps in terms of improving and promoting our tourism offering here in Kerry. The Government knows how important tourism is to the Kerry economy. This type of funding is crucial to helping us maintain and upgrade our museums which are so important to our national heritage, as well as for our tourist industry.
I MOVED the following motion at the July meeting of Kerry County Council. I believe we have quality business people in this country that could help in transforming the health service. Despite pumping in billions of euros, the Health Boards/HSE has failed. Why not try something different? What have we got to lose? I highlighted a long list of problems at the meeting. My motion was defeated, two for, fifteen against with one abstention. I was very dissapointed and I will submit it again later on in the year. I had sought that Kerry County Council call on the Government and the Minister for Health to allow the private sector run public hospitals and the health service and address the "health crisis" in this country for once and for all.

Picture perfect big day BY EVE KELLIHER
P
RIOR to his recent retirement as Glenflesk parish priest, Fr Bill Radley officiated at the wedding Mass of Lisa Doherty and Joe McCarthy. Lisa, from Knockanes, Headford, and Joe, from Killeen, Killarney, exchanged vows in St Agatha’s Church, Glenflesk, and celebrated afterwards at the reception in The Dromhall Hotel, Killarney. “Michael Talbot and his staff looked after us so well; we couldn’t have asked for better!” said the bride. The newlyweds posed for the camera of Padraig Healy in Muckross. Helping them plan their big day were both sets of parents, Marie and Paddy Doherty and Angela and Brendan McCarthy. The bride’s sister Denise Doherty was her maid of honour while her friend Muireann O’Toole, Carlow, and the groom’s sister Aoife McCarthy were her bridesmaids. Joe’s brothers Keith and Brian McCarthy lent their support as best man and groomsman respectively with Lisa’s brother John Doherty as groomsman. Lisa and Joe’s daughter, Katie, two, enjoyed the limelight as flower girl. Lisa and Joe first met on a night out in Killarney five years ago. “We got engaged at home with Katie giving me the engagement ring,” said Lisa. The team at Samantha Leen’s hair salon in Killarney took care of the bridal hairstyling with makeup by What Women Want. The bride looked stunning in an Ella Rose dress and the groom and his party wore suits by Formally Yours, Killarney. The newlyweds live in Ballyhar.

a student's life. The connection between a teacher and a student cannot be underestimated. From my experience, both as a student and as a teacher, I feel that where there is trust, there is progress. I am honoured to say that the person who has had the greatest effect on me as a singer is the late Aine Nic Ghabhann. Aine was larger than life and was, without doubt, one of Ireland's finest singing teachers. She expertly kept me grounded while encouraging me to grow and learn and she always made it clear that performing should
be enjoyed and not always taken too seriously. Aine taught me that a teacher's job is to highlight a student's strengths while helping them with their weaknesses. Teaching can be tough and tiring but it can also be incredibly rewarding when a student reaches their goal. To be a successful student is not to win medals and trophies. It is not to beat the opposition. A successful student is one who has built on their own strengths and a good teacher is one who is there to gently guide and encourage along this journey. I will always be so thankful that I had a such a great teacher during my formative years. My message to Aine and to all the great music teachers is: “Thank you for the music, for giving it to me.”

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
LUKE 13:22-30: The question put to Jesus is one that many still ask: ‘Will many be saved?’ In his answer Jesus is not concerned about numbers but warns his listeners about complacency. Just as his listeners could not regard the mere fact of being Jews as sufficient for salvation, neither can we regard being Christians as enough. That entitlement will come from our acceptance of Jesus. For any relationship to be alive – either with God or with another human person – the real question is ‘Is my heart in this relationship?’ What does your experience tell you of this? “Strive to enter by the narrow door.” Jesus himself is on his journey to Jerusalem, purposeful and determined. His true followers will also be purposeful and determined. That is true in any journey, career, or relationship if there is to be growth or progress. What it is like for you when you fail to do this? What is it like for you when the effort is there? John Byrne OSA
MUSINGS
“MEN from east and west, from north and south, will come to take their places at the feast,” according to Luke 1: 29. This is one of the times when it’s useful to live in a rural parish. When I hear of people coming from the fringe to take their places at the feast, I imagine the dwellers in the townlands at the edge of the parish pushing out the people at its core. These residents of liminal townlands sometimes have divided loyalties: we who live at the centre of the parish, near the parish church, feel it is left to us to keep everything going. But in the vision in today’s gospel, it is these people on the edge who will come to the feast, while we dwellers at the heart of things are pitched out. Is this just or unjust? Jesus is clear. The people at the feast are the ones who deserve to be there. Lord, help me not to forget that there are no reserved spaces at the banquet, that there is equal access, by your grace. Amen. Fr Bernard Cotter
DO I KNOW YOU?
WHAT a frightening thought, that the master would reject us and deny that he knows us. To think that we would have done our best to live a good life, only to meet him at the narrow door and be denied admission! Yet many of us think we have it all sussed. Like those in today’s Gospel, we think we are surely safe. But there is a certain complacency in the voices that plead to the master “We once ate and drank in your company; you taught in our streets” – as if it is enough to have a passing acquaintance with Jesus. Those are not the words of someone who really knows the master and deserves to enter his house. We may think we won’t be denied eternal salvation because we say our prayers, go to Mass every Sunday, and try our best to live good and holy lives. Wouldn’t it be disappointing after all that if we turned into someone that Christ does not recognise? There are elements in all our lives that Christ would not recognise. What are the areas in our lives that need to change, in order that he might invite us in? Tríona Doherty

Kerry ‘pulled like a dog’ in coastal rowing championships
That winning feeling…Pat Tangney, Cox, Fossa Rowing Club, shows his delight as his crew wins the Junior Men’s race in the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championship over the weekend at the Lakeside Centre, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, hosted by Donegal Bay Rowing Club. pictures: Valerie O’Sullivan
TO USE the quote made famous by Ireland’s favourite rowers, Olympian silver medallists Gary and Paul O’Donovan, Kerry “pulled like a dog” at the weekend to win a total of eight gold medals, ten silvers and seven bronze medals at the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships. The championships were hosted by Donegal Bay Rowing Club at Ballyshannon Lakeland Centre, upon which 2700 oarsmen and women descended for the event. The rowing course and conditions didn’t disappoint the crews who travelled from Mayo, Kerry, Cork, Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Antrim, Belfast and Donegal, each competing for those coveted medals and trophies. It was a family affair on the water as Workmen’s Rowing Club, Killarney, under 16, under 18, under 21 and ladies crew took gold with trainer/cox Mikey Joe Burns and his Daughter Siobhan Burns in stroke. The Arklow Rowing Club, Mixed Veteran crew took gold, with a crew of two husband-and-wife teams, Susan Doyle and Peter Doyle and Claire and Tom Alexander. Susan and Claire are also sisters and the cox was Sandra Dunbar. It was Galley Flash, Clonakilty Senior Men who took gold in the Senior Men’s Race. Fossa Rowing Club, Killarney took gold in the Junior Men’s final. PRO Mary B Teahan described the event as “a magical weekend”. “The organisers hosted one of the best weekend’s coastal Rowing championships ever,” she said.

The Provocateur Image of Ireland is being tarnished WELL, Ireland has certainly become a contender for Olympic gold in the scandal stakes, going by the what’s been unfolding in Rio. How proud can we be of a signficant number of our country’s Olympic ticket allocation fetching up on the Brazilian black market, in the wake of a drugs bust. The Attorney General and Minister for Sport will have to address some serious issues over the Olympic Council of Ireland, according to Fianna Fáil sport spokesman Timmy Dooley. The Olympic council of Irealnd pldged to defend itself “to the hilt”, following the arrest of its president Pat Hickey in Rio. Current acting president of the Olympic Council of Ireland Willie O’Brien made the remark after visiting Mr Hickey in Samaritano Hospital. He said Mr Hickey had undergone medical tests but was in a stable condition. He added that Mr Hickey had made no comment to him about the allegations during his visit. “We have very little, restricted access to him. That’s all I can tell you for the present.” Mr O’Brien confirmed that he has taken over the position of president of the OCI while the investigation is completed. “We can’t make any comment while the legal case is going on here. We will defend ourselves to the hilt. That’s all I can say at the moment.” Fianna Fáil’s Mr Dooley told Newstalk Breakfast: “We need to get to the bottom of this. The image of Ireland is being tarnished by these events.” He said the question remained were there potential breaches of the law in Ireland. He also queried the issue of the governance of sport. “There are more serious issues here than the arrest of Pat Hickey.” The Clare TD said it was sad that the focus had been taken off Irish sports people and their great achievements. An Irish man and a translator were arrested earlier this month in Rio and about 800 tickets seized, some of which came from the OCI’s allocation. A Weekly Round-Up Of News +
‘Shh! I’m busy thinking’ New research seems to prove the theory that brainy people spend more time lazing around than their active counterparts. Findings from a US-based study seem to support the idea that people with a high IQ get bored less easily, leading them to spend more time engaged in thought. And active people may be more physical as they need to stimulate their minds with external activities, either to escape their thoughts or because they get bored quickly. Researchers from the Florida Gulf Coast University gave a classic test – dating back three decades - to a group of students. The ‘need for cognition’ questionnaire asked participants to rate how strongly they agree with statements such as "I really enjoy a task that involves coming up with new solutions to problems", and "I only think as hard as I have to". The researchers, led by Todd McElroy, then selected 30 ‘thinkers’ and 30 ‘non-thinkers’ from the pool of candidates. Over the next seven days both groups wore a device on their wrist which tracked their movements and activity levels, providing a constant stream of data on how physically active they were. Results showed the thinking group were far less active during the week than the non-thinkers.
The findings of the study, published in the Journal of Health Psychology, were described as “highly significant” and “robust” in statistical terms. But the weekends showed no difference between the two groups, something which has not been able to be explained. Researchers suggested the findings could lend weight to the idea that non-thinkers get bored more easily, so need to fill their time with physical activity. But the downside to being brainer – and lazier – warned Mr McElroy was the negative impact of a sedentary lifestyle. He suggested that the less active people, no matter how clever they are, should aim to raise their overall activity levels to improve their health The British Psychological Society quoted the study, saying: "Ultimately, an important factor that may help more thoughtful individuals combat their lower average activity levels is awareness. Awareness of their tendency to be less active, coupled with an awareness of the cost associated with inactivity, more thoughtful people may then choose to become more active throughout the day." Despite highlighting an unusual trend, generalising the findings should be done with caution due to the small sample of participants, it added.
Danny Healy-Rae: ‘We had the Ice Age. We had Noah’s Ark’ INDEPENDENT TD Danny Healy-Rae has vowed to shoot any intruder who trespasses on his property, if left with no alternative, reported Juno McEnroe of the Irish Examiner. The Kerry TD said it was “ridiculous” the way the law favoured a criminal in some incidents and he would shoot an intruder’s legs first. Asked should people be able to protect their properties by shooting intruders, the TD responded: “Your home is your
Danny castle. When I see Deputy Healy-Rae. what happens to elderly people, when someone comes in and beats them and robs them — yeah, I’d have no problem.” In an interview with Hot Press magazine, the TD also stood by his recent remarks that God controlled the weather: “Everyone is entitled to their view. I’m basing my views on facts. The facts are there and history proves it. We had the Ice Age. We had Noah’s Ark.”

Views From Kerry And Around The World What happens after 2020? It looks as if our neighbours are having second thoughts, though it may be a bit late. Too many people are uncertain about the future of the UK outside Europe. They want reassuring. Leaders of the Leave campaign promised much but they may find it difficult to keep their promises. Indeed, they may repent in haste and not at leisure. Chancellor Philip Hammond has been urged to make further guarantees that the Government will step in to shore up European Union funding lost once the UK leaves the EU, despite promising over £4.5bn a year to plug the gap. The spending commitment will see universities supported, EU agricultural subsidies guaranteed by the Treasury until 2020, and the Government said it would meet the cost of supporting structural and investment projects which receive EU funds, if they are approved before Mr Hammond’s Autumn Statement. And there’s the devil in the detail that’s causing unease. Several bodies said they were worried about the Autumn Statement cut-off date, and others have called for further assurances after having already been hit by uncertainty caused by the Brexit vote. In addition, the funding guarantee only lasts until 2020, and could spark a scramble for capital unless it is extended. The Royal Society's president, Sir Venki Ramakrishan, welcomed the announcement, but said some scientists had not been able to undertake collaborative projects because their European colleagues are uncertain about the effects of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said: “I think that is why this measure is so welcome because we have been hearing anecdotal reports of people not being willing to collaborate with certain UK collaborators because they weren't sure that they would be able to stay for the full duration of the grant." He called for an extension of the guarantee to projects that gain approval after the Autumn
Statement, but while the UK is still an EU member. “Our hope is that any grants that are awarded while we are still in the EU should be allowed to complete,” he said. The National Trust and British Chambers of Commerce said they were worried about Mr Hammond’s Autumn Statement cut-off date. A National Trust spokesman said: “We welcome the government's decision to continue with funding for newly agreed and existing agri-environment schemes. But set against this is the continued uncertainty should new applications be restricted beyond this autumn. This would put at serious risk decades of effort by farmers and organisations like ours to protect and enhance our countryside.” British Chambers of Commerce Acting Director General, Adam Marshall, said projects “crucial to local business success and confidence” have been at risk since the referendum due to the lack of clarity over funding and welcomed the move. But he added: “The delays that many worthwhile projects face in the approval process must also be cleared away – especially given the fact that the Treasury guarantee only covers projects signed by this year's Autumn Statement.” Announcing the funding, Mr Hammond said: “We are determined to ensure that people have stability and certainty in the period leading up to our departure from the EU and that we use the opportunities that departure presents to determine our own priorities.” But Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader, said: “It is complete brass neck from the Treasury to try and spin that matching the funding that businesses, scientists and farmers currently receive from Europe is somehow a ‘benefit’. “What happens after 2020? Where is the extra £350m a week for the NHS that the Leave campaign promised?”
‘Thomas gave it everything he had’ DESPITE being up against all of the odds, which included a serious hip condition, Thomas Barr performed heroically as he became the first Irish man in over 80 years to compete in an Olympic 400m hurdles final. His coaches, Hayley and Drew Harrison, who have 21 years of experience in bringing athletes to Olympic Games, were brought to tears as their latest prodigy came heartbreakingly close to a medal.
"What he has managed is quite astonishing. We couldn't be prouder of him," Hayley, a native of Bolton, England, added. Due to a labrum tear in his hip joint, Barr's coaches revealed he was unable to run for 13 weeks straight earlier this year, throwing his Olympic plans into disarray. "It's not going to get any better, so we have struggled with it. Did we think he'd be able to get to this point...No... because when it does flare up he literally can't run," Ms Harrison added. With tears in his eyes, Mr Harrison, from Glasgow, said: "He gave it everything he had. The medals went to other people and they deserved it. He'll do it next time. He is absolutely fantastic."

LIEBHERRS 2016 APPRENTICE PROGRAMME
Skills for the Future
Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd., based in Killarney, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of “State of the art” container handling equipment. Liebherr manufactures ship to shore container cranes for loading and unloading of container ships in ports as well as the support equipment required for the stacking of containers in container yards and the loading of containers on trucks and trains. The products manufactured in Killarney are delivered to customers all across the globe. The products manufactured by Liebherr in Killarney are continuously advancing in technical complexity, and the skill levels required to design and manufacture such equipment requires the highest international levels of skills in all disciplines. This necessitates significant investment in training and upskilling of all staff. Liebherr prides itself on the quality of its employees and the skills and experience that they bring to their positions. Liebherr has experienced exceptional growth over the past number of years and investment in the facilities continues apace with employee numbers continuing to increase. Employee numbers at Liebherr have doubled since 2008. To meet market demands and also to allow for future development, Liebherr continues to recruit in all areas of the business with positions available from trainee to senior levels, particularly in those areas requiring technical, engineering, automation and IT skills. Liebherr is now launching its annual recruitment campaign for apprentices who will start their training in October 2016. The successful applicants will train under the guidance of expert instructors with a combination of in-house, ETB and IT lecturers, all with extensive industrial experience. The apprentices will graduate in 2020 with a globally recognised qualification. The Liebherr apprenticeship programme has undergone a significant restructuring in recent years. In 2013 Liebherr commenced a review of the traditional apprenticeship programme in the context of future education and the skill levels required within the company. It became clear that the existing curriculum could not fully cater for the skills that are currently required and for the future. As a result Liebherr entered into a collaboration with the Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT), and enhancements to the apprenticeship
programme evolved through the combined efforts of Senior Engineers at Liebherr and Senior Academic staff at ITT. The programme commenced in 2015 and this joint venture between ITT and Liebherr has been an outstanding success and will provide various career options to apprentices who successfully complete the programme. Depending on the ambition and ability of individuals a level 6, 7, or 8 qualification is now attainable through the programme. To put this in context a level 8 qualification is the equivalent of an honours bachelor degree on the QQI National framework of qualifications as conferred by Universities and 3rd Level institutions. This programme provides the opportunity for ambitious apprentices to attain the same qualification as had they attended a 3rd level college. Speaking about the enhanced apprenticeship programme, Director Mr. Pat O’Leary says “In effect Liebherr is now offering academic scholarships to our apprentices. This is a significant enhancement to the traditional apprenticeship programme and is a fantastic opportunity for the successful applicants. The apprentice can now train to the level of a highly qualified professional engineer with enhanced skills on an “Earn and Learn” basis. It provides the qualifying applicants with additional and better employment opportunities.” The tradition of both a practical and theoretical education is synonymous with Liebherr. Many of the most senior positions currently in the company are held by personnel who started their careers as apprentices. Mr. O’Leary says “I believe that the value of a practical background is key to understanding the theory behind the complex technologies which we now utilise and cannot be underestimated. This new programme will ultimately lead to highly competent individuals who have mastered the practical skills as well as having an in depth understanding of the theory behind them. In effect our apprentices are ‘fit for work’ immediately after they qualify. ” The apprentices recruited in 2016 will have the opportunity to train under this programme. The recruitment process which is based on a combination of academic results, aptitude and attitude is well established and it is expected that, as every year, there will be a high demand again this year. The calibre of applicants has been excellent in recent years and the evolution of the programme to its current status will no doubt ensure that this remains the same in 2016.

Killian Young teams up with Daly’s SuperValu DALY’S SUPERVALU and Kerry football star Killian Young were perfectly pitched when it came to encouraging future GAA stars this week. Daly’s is a real super-charged force to be reckoned with when it comes to celebrating the All-Ireland Football Championship in style. As the countdown begins to Kerry’s double date in Croke Park for the All-Ireland senior and minor football semi-finals on August 28, young players from GAA clubs from across the greater Killarney area were out in force on Monday evening to receive some sought-after new kit. Daly’s SuperValu held a hugely popular competition in recent months to help clubs receive a free O’Neill’s training equipment for juvenile players and this week made the presentation. The O’Neill’s juvenile kit features 10 training balls, 2 ball sacks, 6 water bottles with 4 carriers (6 bottles per set), 20 training bibs, a speed ladder, a sports marker set with 40 markers and a large kit bag. “Daly’s chose eight local GAA clubs, Dr Crokes, Legion, Spa, Fossa, Glenflesk, Kilcummin, Gneeveguilla and Rathmore,” said duty manager Denis Tucker. “Every time customers shopped in Daly’s SuperValu and spent over €40 they received a voucher which they could donate to their club.” Meanwhile, in June, Daly’s SuperValu offered a coveted training session with Kerry star Johnny Buckley as a prize in its popular primary schools competition. Johnny gave sought-after tips to the students at Shrone National School, after junior infant pupil Jessica Doherty won the contest.

Do you have the oldest Fiesta in Ireland? THE search is on for Ireland's oldest operational Fiesta. It is sponsored by the Ford Dealers of Ireland. All Fiesta owners in each county are being invited to fill out an entry form at their local dealer. Those participating, regardless of the age of their Fiesta, will be placed in a draw to win a weekend away at a choice of Irish destinations. For the owner of the oldest model, there's a special treat. He or she will have the opportunity of purchasing a brand-new Fiesta for just €3,003. That was the actual price tag of the 1977 Mark One Fiesta when it made its Irish debut. New Fiestas now retail from €14,395. Since its launch some 25 years ago 140,000 Fiestas have been sold, making it Ireland's best ever selling car. Over this period, it has topped the yearly sales charts no fewer than 11 times. In 1996, it became the first car in Ireland to amass sales in excess of 100,000. Ford sees the Fiesta as having classless appeal like the original Mini. Denis McSweeney, Ford's marketing director says it has also been part of the family for countless households down the years and entry-level motoring for tens of thousands of young drivers: "While it wasn't the first of the superminis, it certainly went on to define the segment and it brought huge growth to small car sales, especially for Ford."
Holidaymaker tried to drive down to the pier in Dunquin – and got stuck in his car all night AN EMBARRASSED holidaymaker spent the night in his SUV after he tried to drive down the pedestrian track to the pier in Dunquin, Dingle – and got stuck. The driver was looking for somewhere to camp when he headed down the pedestrian track last Tuesday week and quickly found his Hyundai was far too big. The photo seen on GoKerry Facebook page showing the car wedged in and the motorist unable to open the doors, spent the whole night sitting in the driver's seat.

He was discovered by the skipper of the Blasket Islands Ferry, the following morning as he was preparing the first crossing from the pier, and found the path was blocked. It is understood the holidaymaker was looking for somewhere to camp for the night when he drove down the track at about 9pm. He was eventually helped out of the car through the boot. The car was later removed by Kerry County Council – using a digger to pull it out.
Ford to ship self-driving cars without steering wheels, brake or gas pedals by 2021 FORD says it’s going to deliver self-driving cars by 2021 – and these will ship in volume, and will also lack steering wheels, brake or accelerator pedals, offering full Level four self-driving features which don’t require a human driver at all, the company announced at a press conference in Palo Alto this week. Ford says that it has held off making any announcements about when to deliver self-driving vehicles until now because it isn’t in a race to make announcements. But it did say it is making self-driving vehicle deployment a priority, because of the advantages it offers in terms of customer experience and passenger safety. “We’re no longer just an auto company, we’re also a mobility company,” said Ford CEO Mark Fields at the press conference. He made that declaration after discussing Ford Mobility Solutions, which is a subsidiary Ford began to help it develop automated fleet driving services. While self-driving cars are planned for mass production by 2021, Ford doesn’t see these replacing personal transportation in five years’ time. Instead, the company anticipates these being used mostly in urban environments as supplements to mass transit, while individual car ownership will continue to focus on vehicles with driver assist functions, but which ultimately still give humans control.

Tractors rev up for charity action VINTAGE tractor enthusiasts will enjoy a day to remember next, Saturday, August 27, as the annual Ring of Kerry tractor run takes place. This year’s event, in conjunction with the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club, will help generates funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin as well as for the family of local youngster Amy O’Connor. Nobber Vintage Club in Co Meath is joining forces with its friends in Kerry to host what will be its sixth annual vintage run fundraiser. Tractors will converge on Tony Wharton’s field, Dromin, Fossa, on Friday, August 26, from 8.30pm and will depart at 7.30am from the Travel Inn, Fossa, on the Saturday morning. “It is expected that all will be back in Killarney, after completing the Ring of Kerry, on Saturday evening at 7.30pm or 8pm,” said Tony. The event started in 2011 when James Carolan, chairman of Nobber Vintage Club, came up with the idea to complete the Ring of Kerry with vintage vehicles ion one day. Killarney men Tony Wharton and Mike Myers co-ordinate the event in Kerry. Organisers thank the people of Kerry, including the Gardaí, the Travel Inn, Fossa, Doughlasha House B&B and Beechgrove Caravan & Camping Park, for their continued hospitality, support and generosity. “Everyone is welcome and the event will feature pre-1996 tractors, bikes cars and campers,” said Tony. For further details on the vintage run, contact Tony on 087-2069161.

Robert Duggan and Gerard Conway in action.
Killarney's Rob Duggan on the brink of British junior title ROB DUGGAN, the reigning Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year, heads to this weekend’s John Mulholland Motors Ulster Rally on the verge of becoming the inaugural DMACK Junior British Rally Champion. The 23-year-old Killarney driver has excelled this season, picking up a trio of wins in his Vauxhall Adam leaving him and co-driver Ger Conway with a commanding 25-point advantage over his nearest rival, Norwegian Sindre Furuseth. Duggan’s lead is all the more impressive given he has yet to play his double points “joker”, something all his rivals have already done. Rob said: "I'm really looking forward to the Ulster Rally, it will be great to get back to Irish tarmac, my favourite surface. Now that we are truly comfortable in the Vauxhall Adam we have decided to play our double points joker this weekend. If all goes well, there is a possibility we can secure the championship
this weekend which would be brilliant, but I’ll try and put that out of my mind and treat the rally the same as I have every other round. “We’ve had a great championship to date and I really want to keep the momentum going. Since the opening round in Wales we haven’t been off the podium and the car and my pacenotes have improved with each event. Physically and mentally I’m in a very good place at the moment. We had a fun day out on the Stonethrowers Rally in Tipperary in my brothers rally car a few weeks ago which myself and Ger used to refine our tarmac pacenotes and we’re confident we can get the result we need this weekend.” Open to any driver under the age of 26, the DMACK Junior British Rally Championship is a competitive proving ground for crews as they have the chance to tackle some of the best forest stages and tarmac tests in the British Isles in FIA-homologated R2 cars.

WE CAUGHT up with the top-class volunteers from Killarney Cardiac Response Unit this week as they got ready to mark their first anniversary. The organisation went live with the national ambulance service on August 25 last year and is always on the lookout for new volunteers. “We are now launching a recruitment drive for new members,” said scheme co-ordinator Leo O’Connor. The unit complements the ambulance service by providing care and utilising those vital few minutes until the national ambulance service arrives on the scene. “We cover an area of 6km from the centre of Killarney town,” added Leo. “If anyone is interested in joining up and learning lifesaving skills please contact our recruitment officer -Mags Hearty on 085-8255280.” Leo also paid tribute to sponsor the Killarney Plaza Hotel. “I would like to thank the Killarney Plaza Hotel for its continued support in providing us with a training and meeting venue,” he said. Life and death, Is such a mystery to me A never ending puzzle that always seems to have one piece missing. In life we loved you more than words could convey, In death we feel exactly the same and more. You do not need to be here to be remembered. The legacy you have left, has been irreplaceable to those who knew you. Because of you, I know a love so great I’d walk through fire if I thought that I could see you, If only for a moment. Because of you, I know forgiveness as to hold hatred would corrode my soul in time. Because of you, I look to make a better future for myself and those around me. Because of you, I smile fondly today and think of you like I know you’d like to be remembered. A joker, with a wisdom beyond your years and an integrity I’ve yet to meet. Forever in our hearts Áine, David, Mom and Dad.

In loving memory of Hannah Coakley Knockmanagh, Killarney, Co. Kerry who died on the 22nd of August 2014. As each day dawns we think of you. As each night falls we pray for you. And throughtout our lives no matter where In our hearts you are always there.
In loving memory of Jeremiah (Jerh) and Kitty Hayes, Rusheen, Castlemaine. Jerh who died on the 18th of August 1986 and Kitty who died on the 7th of April 2014. May they rest in peace together.
We miss your smile your joking ways We miss the things you used to say And when old times we do recall It’s then we miss you most of all.
Just a prayer from the family who loved you Just a memory fond and true, In our hearts you will live forever, Because we thought the world of you.
Sadly missed and always loved by your sons Dennis and John, daughter-in-law Marian, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends.
There is comfort in knowing you’re reunited again As it helps a little to ease the pain.
Anniversary Mass for Hannah, Denis and John Coakley, Knockmanagh on Saturday 20th August at 9.30am in the Church of The Resurrection Killarney.
Remembering DAd 17th of August 2012 If only we could just hit rewind Make a wish, transport ourselves to another time A glass of red in front of you, a kitchen bench, an argument or two Your sage words ringing in my ears because I knew you were right..it didn’t matter.. I still loved a fight What I would give to fight with you now, to disagree on some hot topic Or finish your Irish Times crossword with the word philanthropic How did you miss that one Dad? If only we could just hit rewind Make a wish, transport ourselves to another time A road trip on the coast, long shirt sleeves rolled up, breakfast by the sea Just you, Mom and me What I would give to be back there now, arguing in the back seat about that last turn off Didn’t the sign read Coffs... How did you miss that one Dad? If only we could just hit rewind Make a wish, transport ourselves to another time Twinkling lanterns, the sound of the ocean, friends, family, laughter, emotion Sticky nights, mosquito bites, copious amounts of sunscreen lotion A white dress, a girl, a boy...a proud Mother and a bow tie What I would give to be back there now It was almost a full house in the end, just one empty seat Didn’t you get my invitation... How did you miss that one Dad? Dear Daughter I didn’t miss it, I was there... Didn’t you feel the wind in your hair? I saw it all, I don’t miss a beat I had no use for an empty seat I walked beside you, every step I even tore up the dance floor with your Mother Jesus wept! I’m always around, you should know this by now Don’t even think about the where or how Your wedding was perfect, there was only one mistake You never left me a slice of cake How did you miss that one Sueanne?

Spa Muckross Community Games
Congratulations to the Kerry U12 Cross Country mixed distance relay teams. Boys (1st place - Gold) & girls (4th place - Pewther). These teams are made up of young people from different areas all over Kerry. Spa Muckross had 5 athletes taking part - U12 boys Cian and Oisín Lynch, and Jack O’Sullivan, and U14 girls Grace and Marie Courtney. The U14 girls were in a hugely competitive semi-final heat, and were a place short of qualifying for the final, so unfortunately, Grace and Marie’s journey ended Saturday. The U12 boys team repeated last year’s gold medal success. Again this year, they dominated the race from the beginning, and maintained a clear lead throughout. Spa Muckross boys Jack O’Sullivan, and Cian and Oisín Lynch performed brilliantly. A proud day for Cian & Oisín’s Dad Connie, as he spent the last 7 weeks, with County Committee

Fossa Community Games
What a fantastic weekend it turned out to be for 13 young Fossa children in the community games finals in Athlone. On Saturday Caitriona McKenna followed her U8 art Gold from 2015 with another Gold this time in the U10 art category. She is a brilliant talent and it is great to see her talent being recognised on a National level two years in a row. Fossa weren’t finished winning Gold in Athlone as our U12 boys soccer team won Gold after two incredibly tense and hard fought victories on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday they won 1-0 in the semi final against Clonguish of Longford thanks to a calmly taken penalty by Ryan O’Leary after Finn Kennelly was upended in the box. Our defense held firm and our keeper Matthew O’Connor made some crucial saves to ensure Fossa advanced to Sundays Final. The Final was another very tight game which again finished 1-0 to Fossa this time against ClareGalway/Lackagh of Galway. The Crucial goal came courtesy of a brilliant
chipped finish by Darren Ryan and again our team held their shape and discipline to keep a second clean sheet to secure Gold for Fossa and become Community games Champions 2016. Special mention to their coaches John Dinneen and Jim Doyle who did such a great job in organising and training this super team. The all conquering Fossa side were as follows Matthew O’Connor, Robert Brookes, Cian Doyle, Peadar Kelliher, Sam Buckley, Eddie Moroney, Sean Dineen. Rocco Sheehan, Ryan O’Leary, Darren Ryan, Finn Kennelly and Max Leon. As always the Fossa support was incredible with family and friends making the long journey with some even changing holiday plans just so they could be there cheering on the boys all the way. Kerry Community games committee members Margaret Culloty, Trish O’Neill and Neilus Collins were in Athlone all weekend to lend their support to all the competitors representing Kerry. Best of Luck to Orlaith Dinneen (Marathon) Ciara Kennelly (High Jump) and our U12 relay team of Abbey Murphy, Alicia Burke, Alison Butler, Melissa Ahern and Rachel Wallace next weekend in the athletics finals.

ROWING SILVER FOR IRELAND AT RIO History was made in Rio last week at the Olympic Games when Skibbereen brothers Paul and Gary O’Donovan secured a silver medal in the Lightweight Mens Double Sculls for Ireland and in so doing catapulted themselves to Irish sporting super-stardom. The truly historic achievement of winning Ireland’s first Olympic medal in rowing was evident in the emotional interviews, not only with the victorious brothers themselves but also with the other members of the current international rowing squad and former international rowers. Over the past week, the widespread media coverage brought to a whole new audience just what it takes to reach the Olympic podium and the immense collective pride felt within the Irish rowing community. Indeed it has been a long road for Ireland to an Olympic rowing medal and the exciting races in Rio brought back some fantastic memories of Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and the journeys travelled by our very own Olympic heroes, Paul Griffin, Sean Casey and Cathal Moynihan. It has been thrilling once again to watch the current Irish crews in action in Rio. One medal and two A final placings from the Lightweight Double crews while Sanita Puspure so narrowly missed out on a qualification spot for her shot at the top six race in the Womens Scull. The Olympic Regatta in Rio has been a great overall success and a fantastic spectacle to witness, with the promise of a renewed upward trajectory for the sport right across the country.

Scramble for semi-final tickets hots up WITH a Croke Park full house of over 82,000 spectators guaranteed, the scramble for tickets for the much-anticipated All Ireland semi-final meeting between Kerry and Dublin on August 28 is well and truly underway. Online tickets have been sold out and there has been a huge demand for tickets allocated through the Kerry County Board and clubs. Kerry and Dublin have never failed to grab the imagination of their rival supporters and when you add in the fact that the GAA public at large have been waiting on this game to ignite the championship season, one can understand why the demand for tickets is so great. There is of course a third county involved and that is Kildare who have surprised many observers by reaching the Minor semi final where they will meet a treble chasing Kerry team. Tickets which were available on general sale online at GAA.ie are not available at the moment but a further online allocation will be added by Croke Park. Any tickets not allocated through the clubs here in Kerry will go on public sale at the County Board Office in Austin Stack Park and the Kerry GAA Store in Killarney Outlet Centre on Thursday, August 18, from 2.30pm. Minor semi-final The minor semi-final between Kerry and Kildare throws in at 1.30pm while the senior semi final between Kerry and Dublin will have a 3.30pm throw-in with Meath’s David Gough, who refereed this year’s Munster final, in charge.

Dr Crokes have clinched a place in the Division 1 final following a comprehensive victory over Templenoe and the second final place will be decided when Templenoe take on Austin Stacks in the final round of games. At the other end of the table, Glenbeigh-Glencar’s victory over Legion condemns the Killarney side to the 2nd Division next year and they will be joined by Kenmare. In Division 2, Rathmore’s victory over fellow promotion hopefuls St Marys sees them promoted to Division 1 with 15 points and St Marys who finish up with a game at home to Emmets, look like joining them on 13 points as do An Ghaeltacht (12 points), who have a game in hand with Listowel Emmets next weekend, There is nothing decided at the bottom where St Michaels Foilmore’s win over An Ghaeltacht has thrown the South Kerry side a lifeline. Finuge, Laune Rangers and Listry are all in a battle to avoid the drop with crucial back games this weekend.
In Division 3, Currow (14 points), who have a back game with St Senans next weekend, can clinch promotion with victory in that game, St Pats and Annascaul and Ardfert, are still very much in the running for promotion. At the bottom, Tarbert are already relegated while Beale will have to win their back game with Ardfert to stay in Division 3. St Senans, Dromid and Brosna will all be hoping to win their respective back games to avoid the drop. In Division 4, long time joint leaders Na Gaeil and Fossa stay top of the table. All Ireland Champions Fossa, well done to a fantastic group of boys. U-16 Boys On Monday evening our U-16’s met Kerins O’Rahillys in a must win game where defeat would almost certainly mean elimination from the county league. A superbly dispatched penalty from the team captain and further goals from Eamon Murphy and Eoin Talbot pushed Fossa to a 4-14 to 0-10 victory. Eamonn Murphy, with 2-3 and the pin point accuracy of Emmet O’Shea (0-9) were big factors in the victory. On Wednesday evening it was Gneeveguilla away in the final group game. A victory here would guarantee a semi-final place. Having got off to a very strong start the team had a comfortable lead at half time. This continued in the second half and Fossa ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 8-14 to 2-11. Best for Fossa on the night were Cian McCarthy, Cian O’Shea, Emmet O’Shea and Daniel Talbot.
