"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Welcome to Tír na nÓg

YOUNG people’s opinions matter – that was the message in Killarney this week as leading youth services providers from across Europe gathered in town. THE governing body of the European Youth Information and Counselling Agency (ERYICA) is meeting this week in Killarney as part of an enhanced engagement in Ireland. The event, which is being organised by Kerry Diocesan Youth Service and Youth Work Ireland, will examine a variety of EU-wide topics relevant to young people and youth services today. The meeting and an associated seminar in Dublin next week will work to further develop critical areas of youth information provision in Ireland and throughout the EU. ERYICA is composed of national bodies which seek to guarantee the right of young people to full and reliable information, which helps them make the choices they face in their lives, said Tim O’Donoghue, director, KDYS Services. “We are delighted to bring this significant European meeting to Kerry and to host it in our youth centre in Killarney,” Tim added. “This is a key part of our ambition to develop our Killarney centre into a formally approved ‘European Youth Centre’ under the Council of Europe. If successful the Killarney centre will be the first European Youth Centre in Ireland and will represent and strengthen Ireland’s commitment to Youth Development in Europe. This will, most importantly, open up new opportunities for local young people and professionals to access many opportunities across Europe under a range of European initiatives.”

Plan to develop Killarney into a European youth hub THERE has never been so much available for young people – if you go out and look. The team at Kerry Diocesan Youth Service Centre at Fair Hill has always been quick off the mark when it comes to offering services and facilities as well as courses and fun activities of all kinds for teenagers, both during the holidays and the school year. News that the Killarney centre hopes to become a European Youth Centre – the first in Ireland – is very welcome. If successful it will open up new opportunities for local young people and youth professionals. Meanwhile, it was fantastic to get a close-up of Killarney

House and a fascinating insight into its history over the past week. The official opening of the gardens on Friday paves the way for the opening of the house itself next March – looking forward to it! Finally, congratulations to the Kerry minor team and wishing the players and management the very best as they march on to their All-Ireland final date in Croke Park in their quest for three-in-a-row. Commiserations to the dedicated Kerrys seniors who gave it their all on Sunday. Beidh lá eile. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

Open-air cinema night GAELSCOIL FAITHLEANN is starting the new school year in a fun way with an open-air cinema evening on Friday, September 9, in the school grounds! All are welcome to attend this event at the school, which will feature the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Gates open at 7.45pm and the film will start at 8.30pm. Tickets are €10 per family and there will be a ‘cinema shop’ open serving popcorn and drinks. Kerry Film Festival is providing the large open-air screen and will show the film for the school. Remember to bring deckchairs to sit on if you wish, and bring warm clothes and blankets as the evenings get cold. This will be a novel way for families to get together at the start of a new school year!

Question

I am not happy with work that I had done in my house by a builder and will have to pay for someone else to finish the job properly. What can I do to recoup the additional expense? Answer

If your original builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to pursue a claim against the builder through the Small Claims procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without needing to employ a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim is €2,000. The Small Claims service is provided through local District Court offices. Anyone who has purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business may submit a claim using the Small Claims procedure. You can make claims for faulty goods or bad workmanship, minor damage to property and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties. Businesses involved in disputes with other businesses can also use the Small Claims procedure. To make a claim, you complete an application form, which you can get from the Small Claims Registrar at your local District Court office. You can also get help in completing the form from the Registrar. Make sure you use the correct name and address of the person or company against whom you want to make the claim. The completed form with a fee of €25 should be lodged with the Small Claims Registrar. You can also apply online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie. The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person against whom you are making the claim. If the other party does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed and you can apply for a court order in your favour. But, if your claim is disputed, the Registrar will contact you and let you have a copy of the reasons why the other party is disputing your claim. The Registrar will try to negotiate a settlement to the dispute. If no settlement can be reached, the matter is then set down for a court hearing in the District Court. You can get more information on your options from the Citizens Information Centre below.

THIS week saw a new chapter open for Killarney’s youngest students. Killarney Advertiser took note of just how swiftly and skilfully teachers turned tears to laughter, as their young protégés were equally fast at making firm friends with their new classmates. Most importantly, the class of 2016 lost no time in getting down to business with their shiny new schoolbooks and all-important lunchtime treats! Prompted by the first-day-at school fever that swept town, the team at Killarney Advertiser shared many a memory of our own respective first forays into the classroom in decades gone by. We would like to wish all the new junior infants the very best as they embark on their exciting school careers.

Donal Courtney to bring Vatican Pimpernel to life onstage KILLARNEY’S own Donal Courtney will perform his one-man play God Has No Country at the INEC Acoustic Club on Friday, September 16. The performance is part of the national programme of events for Culture Night 2016 and admission is free. God Has No Country tells the story of the struggles encountered by Kerryman Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty and his colleagues in Rome during the Second World War. The story follows O’Flaherty’s torment as he decides to act in defence of those suffering under the tyranny of the fascists. The play also reflects on his upbringing and education in Killarney and how joining the priesthood protected him from involvement in The War of Independence. Told with humour and sensitivity, God Has No Country brings the heroic

deeds and achievements of this extraordinary man to a wider audience. The performance is followed by a post-show discussion between writer Aidan O’Connor and creator of the show, Donal Courtney. Donal will discuss his personal connections to the story, the challenges faced in creating the piece and various other insights into the Hugh O’Flaherty story. Culture Night is brought to you by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs in partnership with Kerry County Council. Tickets for God Has No Country are free of charge but must be reserved by phoning the INEC Box Office on 064 6671555. Doors open at 7pm and the play commences at 8pm.

Rose of Tralee and Lee Strand show how going back to school is fun GOING back to school can be fun when you have snazzy stationery, such as the Lee Strand homework journal, unveiled by the Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney at the Lee Strand milk plant in Ballymullen, Tralee. This year over 10,000 Lee Strand hardback homework journals will be distributed to National School pupils in Kerry, West Limerick and North Cork. The specially designed homework journals, valued at €4.50 each, are printed in English and Irish with over 140 pages and include a weekly diary, where pupils can record their homework each day; a timetable; tables book; healthy eating tips; teacher and parent note forms; and lots more. John O’Sullivan, general manager, Lee Strand, said: “Lee Strand takes great pride in supporting the local community and what better way to support our community than by supporting our local schools. Schools can avail of the homework journals by simply collecting mascots from Lee Strand packs. We have received very positive feedback from principals, teachers and parents on the homework journals as this is one less expense for parents to incur when their children return to school.” Other Lee Strand back-to-school initiatives include the Lee Strand school milk programme and also the very popular Lee Strand school tour visits of the milk plant in Tralee. For further details or registration contact 066-7121084.

A HUGELY ENJOYABLE sweet sixteenth birthday party was on the cards on Wednesday evening for popular Killarney venue Kayne’s Bar & Bistro. There was no shortage of help in blowing out the birthday candles, with well-wishers tucking in to delectable treats and a mouthwatering birthday cake when they arrived for the celebration. During the event, Kayne’s also relaunched its hugely successful loyalty club. Existing members of the loyalty club are already benefiting from exclusive access to special offers and discounts in both the bar and bistro. “There was live music, a barbecue, drinks promotions and much more for all our loyalty club members on the night,” said a spokeswoman.

Hit 1916 drama Patrick returns to the INEC THEATREGOERS in Killarney will be delighted to know that the hit drama ‘Patrick’ returns to the INEC for a one night only showing at the INEC on Thursday, October 27. Written and directed by local author and journalist Aidan O’Connor, the musical drama tells the moving story of the final months of the life of Patrick O’Connor from Rathmore – one of the four Kerry men to die during the six-day rebellion during Easter, 1916. The play sold out six shows earlier this year and over 3,000 people came to see the production when last staged at the INEC in May. Despite several requests to take ‘Patrick’ to other venues around Kerry, Dublin, and London, the October 27 date will be the final showing of the hugely successful amateur production. Writer Aidan O’Connor said that the reaction to ‘Patrick’ has been phenomenal. “The script, the story and the remarkable talent of the actors and performers have moved people beyond all expectations. It’s powerful to see history come so alive,” he said. A matinee performance will be held for students on October 27 at 11am. The show that night is at 8pm. Tickets are on sale from the INEC Box Office; telephone 064-6671555.

Aunty Nellie's opened its doors earlier this year, creating five new full and part-time jobs. “It has been a busy few months for us so this was our opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us,” store manager PJ O’Sullivan said. Pedal power on the open road

A view of the Iveragh Peninsula, for Fionnbar Walsh, centre, father of the late inspirational Donal Walsh, and cyclists.PICTURES: VALERIE O'SULLIVAN Noel Byrne, Ronan Ryan and Terence Ryan.

FROM early last Saturday morning, cyclists from Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Dublin took to the roads around the Iveragh Peninsula for the annual Killarney Cycling Festival. Over 480 cyclists, ranging in age from 18 to 68, departed from The Gleneagle, led by grand marshal Fionnbar Walsh, and travelled in the direction of Molls Gap. They then had the choice of either continuing along the Wrong Way Round or the Hard Way Round. The 160km Wrong Way Round travelled through Sneem, Waterville, Caherciveen, Glenbeigh and Killorglin, while the 180km Hard Way Round diverged from the Wrong Way Round by taking a right for Ballaghbeama through the heart of Kerry to Ballaghasheen, and then taking a further detour around the stunning Skellig Ring before rejoining the main troop on the road to Caherciveen. The cyclists returned to festival headquarters, The Gleneagle, for the post-cycle party where a well-earned barbecue awaited them. The first man past the finish line was John Walsh from Mallow who completed the Hard Way Round in under five hours. The Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation was the official charity of the Killarney Cycling Festival and cyclists had the option of donating directly to the charity when registering.

From Sri Lanka to Kinsale BY EVE KELLIHER

A

N ENGAGEMENT in Sri Lanka led to wedding bells in Kinsale for Maria O’Sullivan and Alex Sherer. Maria from Minish, Killarney, and Alex, from Beckenham, London, met five years ago in London. Alex popped the question in February 2015 and friends and relatives travelled from across Ireland as well as from London, Scotland, America and Singapore to celebrate with the couple as they exchanged vows in Kinsale, Cork. The wedding reception took place in Ballinacurra House, Kinsale. “Guests enjoyed a 'wedding weekend' at Ballinacurra house and enjoyed a true Irish wedding celebration!” said Maria. Helping them plan the big day were Maria’s parents Alice and Pat O’Sullivan, Minish, and Alex’s mother and father, Dorrie and Paul Sherer, Beckenham, London. Taking on bridesmaid duties were Gillian O'Sullivan, Triona Mangan and Avril Counihan, while Chris Veitch was best man, with Giles Edwards, Scott Lane and Rob

Hughes as groomsmen. Tom Kelly was pageboy while Sarah O'Sullivan, Roisin O'Sullivan and Jess O'Sullivan were flower girls. Leading wedding band Truly Diverse ensured the dance floor was full. Aoife McCarthy, Kinsale, created the bridal hairstyling while the makeup was by Annette O’Brien. Maria looked stunning in a wedding dress sourced in Finesse Bridalwear, Listowel, while the bridesmaids’ dresses were created by Ann Mangan, Kilbrean. Jakub Walutek, Kinsale, captured the big day on camera. Daisy Chain, Kinsale, took care of the floral arrangements. Their honeymoon took the newlyweds to Peru and Brazil. Maria, an architect, and Alex, a financial advisor, live in Beckenham, London. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

Looking after our relationships Eileen Buckley gives an insight into how to respond to challenges in life

AS HUMAN beings going through life, we are frequently presented with challenges, some are sudden, some are on-going, some are unexpected, but many issues have never been examined or understood. Eileen Buckley, centre, with Dr Tony Humphreys and Dr Challenges may be Helen Ruddle. in relation to physical, emotional, intellectual, behavioural, sexual, social or spiritual concerns – it is how we respond to these challenges that determines our well-being or otherwise. As a relationship mentor, I believe that our greatest need is to love, to be loved and to belong. Everyone has a story, each individual is truly unique and has limitless potential to create new possibilities for themselves. How often do we hear “talk to someone” when we are struggling? There is no shortage of people to speak with, but perhaps finding someone who can truly listen with compassion and without judgment is a greater challenge. Frequently we are encouraged to look after our ‘mental health’ and in doing so, the importance of seeing our emotions as our allies cannot be underestimated. The most important relationship in our lives is the one we have with ourselves, as it is from here that our ability to relate with others emanates. However, for many of us, the thought of loving self has been seen as selfish but nothing could be further from the truth. With this in mind, it is our desire to create the space and safety for individuals to share their stories thereby creating opportunities for reflection and new choices through developing a more loving relationship with self. I practise in association with Dr Tony Humphreys and Dr Helen Ruddle and work primarily in the Killarney area. One-to-one sessions (throughout the year) along with parenting classes, Realising your Potential (from September to April) and more are available. •Contact Eileen Buckley on 087-4129655 or email eileen2buckley@gmail.com or contact Dr Tony Humphreys on 021-4642394 or tonyhumphreys1@eircom.net

CACI non-surgical facelift It’s never too early to start treating yourself to facials, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

WHO wants to grow old gracefully? I ask myself that question quite regularly. Do I want to be someone who lets it all go in the direction nature intends it? Or do I want to be someone that pushes back on nature’s steady advances? Ever tried the CACI non-surgical facelift? For a very long time CACI facials have been seen as a really great alternative to Botox or going under the knife. While you won’t come out looking 10 years younger after one treatment, after a course of treatments, you will see a significant reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and appear visibly younger looking. CACI stands for Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument and it is a treatment designed over 20 years ago

to help treat people with Bells Palsy or who had suffered a stroke. When they were using it in hospitals to treat these patients , it soon became apparent that it could lift and tightens sagging muscles and improves the skins condition. It was re-educating the muscles to do what it had done previously. It was soon brought into the beauty world to do the very same thing for ageing and sagging skin. If you are thinking of treating yourself to a facial this season, this is the ultimate experience. It's never too early to start this facial, which is suitable for anyone from 25 years onwards. Everyone that has this facial can't get over the results. Contact us at 064-6632966 for a free demonstration.

Killarney beauty salons and spas supporting people on their cancer journey

The Spa at Muckross Park is one of seven Killarney beauty and wellbeing specialists participating in the Beauty and the "Beast" campaign.

W

HEN you are battling cancer, a beauty or massage treatment can be an important factor in your general wellbeing. According to experts, such therapies can be extremely helpful in terms of your emotional and psychological wellbeing but can be last on the list of priorities. Killarney native Caitriona Heffernan has joined forces with seven beauty specialists in the area who have generously donated complimentary vouchers for people going through or who have recently finished cancer treatment. “So far men and women who have been in touch have expressed how important these treatments will be to their wellbeing, how it helps with the ongoing emotional and psychological aspects of coping with cancer and how it can be difficult to afford such a treat due to the costs of illness,” said Caitriona. “These beauty professionals are looking forward to welcoming and supporting you at this time.” Sixteen vouchers are still available as part of the Beauty and the "Beast" campaign in conjunction with Kerry Hospice Foundation, for manicures, pedicures, eyebrow and eyelash tints from the following salons: The Spa at Muckross, Muckross Park Hotel; The Innisfallen Health & Beauty Rooms, The Malton Hotel; The Spa at the Plaza Hotel; Desire Beauty & Nail Salon, West End House, New Street; Linda's Beauty & Holistic Clinique, Clarragh House, Woodlawn Road; Lady Jane Body & Beauty, Upper Park Road; and Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio, Fair Hill Car Park. To avail of the treatments free of charge, contact Caitriona on caitrionachelsea@ gmail.com or her sister Siobhan on 087-9819075. The street collection in aid of Kerry Hospice Foundation held in Killarney last Sunday week along with a number of additional donations has so far raised an impressive €1,700. It was organised by Caitriona who thanked family and friends who took to the streets on a wet and windy day to collect in memory of her brother Brendan. “I am grateful to the people of Killarney for their generous donations towards the construction of the 16-bedroom inpatient unit at Kerry University Hospital,” said Caitriona.

Grace Notes Living life in colour

“The creative arts” is a term than takes in many different disciplines, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

DURING the early days of my training I would have thought of my discipline, singing, as having very little in common with another creative art. I would maybe have considered singing and acting to be similar in that they both involve performing for an audience. It was only when I performed at an art exhibition at Frank Lewis' Gallery that I learned that all types of artists have a lot in common. The artist that was exhibiting that day was Roger McCarthy. He said that he didn't know a lot about singing but that he

could see it in terms of colour. He could describe a voice in terms of how he would see it as a painting. It was at this moment that I realised he was completely right! I thought about how my teacher Aine would often say, “Give that section a darker colour”, or, “Think more bright yellow for your upper register.” My father was always amused at the terminology used at the singing competitions I entered. The adjudicators described my voice as “chocolatey”, “warm chocolate”, “dark” and “liquid gold'. Without even realising it

I started to view my own voice as being a specific colour. If a painter wants to add light, they will use a bright coloured paint. If I want to get a brighter sound in my voice I visualise a bright colour as I am singing. All artists have a palette from which they work. Our palettes will all be different as our colour combinations and blended colours will be determined by our own personal style and natural talent. I am sure that if you filled a room with singers, painters, actors, musicians and filmmakers, we would all quickly realise that we speak a unique language. A language of colour, depth and tone. The language of “The Artist”.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS LUKE 14:25-33

John Byrne OSA, Veritas

MUSINGS

THE Gospel calls us to a radical awakening; a taking stock of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. We are called to be prepared and alert, that embracing the Kingdom of God is not a passive experience, or indeed a ticking of a box exercise; I went to Mass – check; I gave money to charity – check. Jesus demands more of us; He is asking for our very being – All that I am! We are to put God first and surrender all our attachments to Him – our family, power, possessions. It is not so much that we aren’t to love them; rather, we have the freedom through God to be in the right relationship with the world when we put God first. Embracing the cross is daunting and frightening at first sight, however, God wants the best for us, and we are not left alone if we choose to follow Him. We pray today to trust in God. Siobhain Tighe

Counting the Cost

THIS Sunday’s Gospel is troubling. Does Jesus really expect us to hate our families, friends and even ourselves in order to be his followers? Jesus is making a point here about how we attach ourselves to things and to people, even to images of ourselves. Attachment can cause all sorts of suffering in our lives. If we are to grow, we move on from the comfortable, we let go of the familiar, and that can often be painful. Today, we can ask ourselves: ‘What is it that I need to let go of?’ The two parables in this story remind us to think things through and weigh up the cost involved. This Kingdom of God journey involves sacrifice and sometimes it feels like ‘20,000 against 10,000’. A disciple of Jesus must be ready to carry the burden not only of tensions with one’s family but even the burden of legal consequences. This was the experience of Luke’s community and it is still the experience of many Christians in the world today. So this passage is a call to conversion and we read it from the various forms of discipleship that we are in: parenting, advocacy, political life, social work, friendships, community building… Jesus "turned to them", he is speaking from experience. Jesus’ words are harsh, but spend time with this text today; his words can be interpreted as passionate, urgent, and focused, and can even offer us a great freedom and encouragement in whatever journey of discipleship we are on. Jane Mellett

METHODIST

THE passage is a call to both radical and practical discipleship. When have you found that in order to achieve a certain objective you had to make it a priority, and then take the practical steps necessary to reach your goal? What were the benefits to you when you did this? ‘Hate’ is prophetic exaggeration for the uncompromising loyalty Jesus seeks in disciples. There may be times when people make demands in conflict with fidelity to another relationship. This can be painful. When have you found that being clear about your priorities helped you in that situation? Jesus uses parables here to tell us that in important human affairs we do not settle for vague aspirations. When have you found that some element of practical planning has been necessary to make progress with a project? What has this taught you about making the most of your life and of your time?

With 16 weeks to Christmas it's plenty of time to loose a stone for Christmas (a pound a week) with two spare weeks to reach your goal, which maybe increased fitness or weight loss or increased mobility. You can book your sessions anytime in the day that suits you, we understand that each week you schedule can change.

Indian head massage and reflexology REFLEXOLOGY is covered by all major health insurers, depending on your own policy. Indian head massage is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraine and sinusitis.

It is deeply calming and relaxing, leaving you feeling energised and revitalised and better able to concentrate. This system of is massage used to relieve tension and treat illness, based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, and head linked to every part of the body. So what better excuse to go for massages to try to loosen the whole thing up? Indian head massage is one of the greatest pleasures known to humankind and is hands-down my favourite spa treatment. Usually lasting about 45 minutes, the therapist works on your shoulders, neck, does a bit of back massage and then moves up to your head. A lot of tension and stress is carried in the neck and head and getting a massage like this is the quickest way to blissville.

Universal contour body wrap THE Universal Contour body wrap offers extremely effective inch-loss and is an anti-cellulite treatment. A detoxed body has more energy and it's easier to lose weight. Call Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966 for further information.

Feeling a bit stressed?

Yoga can help!

Elaine O’Donoghue of Navé Yoga reveals how regular practice of yoga can benefit you DID you know that deep breathing and matching movement with breath, just as is done in vinyasa classes, strengthens all of the muscles of the respiratory system, increasing it's efficiency and expanding lung capacity, clearing the nasal passages and calming the central nervous system? This calming of the central nervous system makes us more relaxed and counteracts the effects of stress by allowing the immune system to recover and function more effectively. It increases the blood flow to the organs and glands and reduces muscle tension. Blood flows in the body more easily when the body is relaxed. So while you are de-stressing and breathing deeply in a vinyasa yoga class you are also toning your body, building strength and releasing toxins through your yoga practice. There is a lot more to yoga than the external benefits that we see on the outside, there are many internal benefits too. Yoga is excellent as a complimentary practice to sports such as swimming, running, gym, football and cycling, as it helps to stretch and lengthen the muscles that these sports can tighten and it makes the body more flexible and therefore less prone to injury. We have classes for beginners right through to advanced and a range of teachers, and we also teach pregnancy yoga and yoga for kids so check us out today at www.naveyoga.com or call on 087-2601624.

Indian head massage is especially good for relieving stress, tension, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, migraine and sinusitis. It is deeply calming and relaxing, leaving you feeling energised and revitalised and better able to concentrate. Increased joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders, improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, frees knots of muscular tension, relaxes connective tissue, and aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products aid lymphatic drainage, helps to release toxins. All this combined with reflexology, which increases the circulation brings a feeling of well being helping eliminate toxins in the body.

Universal Contour Body Wrap *Inch Loss *Anti - Cellulite *Body Sculpting

How does the Body Wrap work? A unique blend of mineral rich clay and specialist body wrapping techniques help cleanse your body & draw out toxins whilst actively compressing the soft fatty tissues to create instant inch loss and a body sculpting effect. Once the warm clay-soaked bandages are applied, you can lie back and relax for an hour while the body wrap treatment gets to work. This is not a water loss treatment. In fact, we recommend you drink water regularly after your treatment to enhance detoxification & after the wrap to help flush and rid the body of impurities. After the Body Wrap has been removed, the special Classic Clay solution remains in the pores of the skin and your inch loss can continue for three to four days. To experience the full benefits of the UCW body wrap, a course of 3 is recommended, these should be taken a minimum of 7-10 days apart.

CACI Ultimate Non Surgical Face Lift Machine

*Facial Toning *Lifting *Microdermabrassion Which has been hailed the world over as the industry’s definitive alternative to botox. As the name suggests the CACI ultimate aesthetic machine is the very first treatment to combine microcurrent, facial toning, crystal free microderm abrasion, light therapy. As we grow older our facial muscles naturally start to lose tone and elasticity. Microcurrent therapy was originally developed as a medical application to treat facial palsy and muscle tone was restored by applying tiny micro-current electrical impulses to the affected muscles. Today this proven technology is now available in our Studio, as a painless cosmetic treatment and is commonly referred to as ‘facial toning’ or ‘the non surgical face lift’. During each 1 1/2 hour treatment session all 32 facial muscles are gently manipulated and re-educated by our trained therapist using a series of precise movements. Results are visible after the very first treatment but a course of twelve treatments is generally recommended. After a course of CACI facial toning treatments facial contours will look lifted and toned.

A monthly top up treatment is recommended to maintain results.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Anam Cara’s local meetings Could St Finan’s grounds offer solution to parking crux? I’VE just read your article on parking in Killarney (edition of August 26) and the reference to Fitzgerald Stadium. I was just wondering would the powers-that-be ever consider using the grounds of St Finan’s for car parking, even on a temporary basis? It gives access to Tralee Road as well as access to the Fitzgerald

Stadium side. Also there is access through St Brendan’s Terrace for walkers. I am originally from St Brendan’s Terrace so I am very familiar with the area and I think it could be a solution. It just seems a pity it’s not used at all now. Norrie Sheehan, Glenflesk

Rising cost of motor insurance

St Finan’s Hospital.

I HAVE submitted the following notice of motion for the next meeting of Kerry County Council. I am asking that Kerry County Council call on the Government to immediately tackle the rising cost of motor insurance whereby in recent times they have risen by up to 100 and 200% in cases and it is becoming increasingly difficult for many families, individuals and businesses to afford the cost of same. The Provocateur Can someone please sort out Killarney’s traffic chaos this school term? TRAFFIC congestion was an additional difficulty for anyone embarking on the back-to-school trail this week. Every highway and byway that converged on Killarney was absolutely choked to the gills on Thursday in particular, which was when most schools reopened to pupils. Frustrated motorists stared grimly through the windscreens as the rain started to spill down in sympathy with the general plummeting of spirits. You see, not only does the start of the new school year herald the end of summer, but in Killarney it also serves to underline the fact that we have a serious traffic problem in our town. Throughout the past three months, we complained about the unending queues of cars on the roads but tried to kid ourselves it was a seasonal thing. The beginning of September emphasises the fact that the traffic chaos is a yearround issue in Killarney. As if parents didn’t have enough to contend with between the expense of uniforms and schoolbooks, they also have the added stress of joining the dreaded classroom-bound convoy as soon as they leave the house in the morning. We know a traffic study is currently being finalised for the town but please, please, can someone find a solution to Killarney’s traffic conundrum this school term? Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Let us know your views at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

This & That Lightning Strike More than 300 wild reindeer have been killed by lighting in central Norway in what wildlife officials are calling an unusually large natural disaster. The Norwegian Environment Agency has released eerie images showing a jumble of reindeer carcasses scattered across a small area on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. The agency says 323 animals were killed, including 70 calves, in the lightning storm Friday. Agency spokesman Kjartan Knutsen told the AP it's not uncommon for reindeer or other wildlife to be killed by lightning strikes, "but we have not heard about such numbers before." He said reindeer tend to stay very close to each other in bad weather, which could explain how so many were killed at once. Thousands of reindeer migrate across the barren Hardanangervidda plateau as the seasons change.

God calling! Going into a church in France recently, I noticed a sign on the door. It read something like this: You are entering the House of God to hear his word. It is possible, but highly unlikely, he will contact you by mobile phone. The Buck Stops Here The above quote is credited to Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the USA. I read recently that when President Truman retired in 1951, he was invited on to the board of Bank of America. Despite there being no financial provision then for retired US presidents, he refused because he believed the only reason the invitation was extended was because he had been US President and as he did not want to compromise that high office he was unable to accept.

Down Rose claims Roses were ‘manipulated, bullied and mistreated’ THE 2016 Down Rose lashed out at the Rose of Tralee International Festival, saying she did "not sign up for a cheap reality television show in which our emotions would be manipulated for entertainment purposes". Writing on the festival’s Facebook page, Fainche McCormack from Newry said the Roses "were manipulated, bullied and mistreated". In the now-deleted review post, she also alleged that cameras “intrusively” followed the contestants and asked “inappropriate probing questions" with one girl being asked what colour underwear she was wearing right before she went on stage. The 19-year-old, who didn’t make it to the live show, said: "I, and my fellow rose sisters, did not sign up for a cheap reality television show in which our emotions would be manipulated for entertainment purposes, nor did we sign up to be treated like animals in the circus and held in a room against our will. " On Sunday morning, in a segment which appeared on RTÉ’s Road to the Dome, the 65 Roses were told if they would make it to final 32. Their escorts brought either a white or red rose to their room and they were then separated into two groups, one of which was told they were going through to the televised final. In a statement, the executive chairman of the festival, Anthony O'Gara,

acknowledged that the Sunday morning segment was "insensitive". "The manner in which the extra TV show, The Road to the Dome, was finished was insensitive and we didn't anticipate that. We wouldn't like to see it repeated and we apologised to the Roses and they accepted that."

Views From Kerry And Around The World Decision Time Now that we find ourselves ‘caught out’ by European bureaucracy, who deem our private affairs as their business, their concern, it may very well be ‘make-yourmind-up time for Ireland. Downing Street has signalled it would “welcome any company” to the UK, just hours after an unprecedented EU tax-decision left a question mark over Apple’s future in Ireland. Number 10 and the Treasury said Britain was “open for business” after being asked whether it was comfortable with the techgiant coming to Britain, following a decision which left it facing an Irish tax bill running into billions of euro. UK Chancellor Philip Hammond has already raised fears of a European ‘tax war’ after saying the UK is ready to bolster the British economy with business levy cuts. Brexit has released the UK from bureaucratic EU laws & is now free to fight their own corner. Like Britain we stand between Europe and the US. Would we be stronger together? We are uniquely situated on the global supply chain. Shannon was once a vital link between Europe & the US & Ireland & our nearest neighbour are vital in the continued expansion of business globalisation. Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland are based on an agreement drawn up in 1991, when Apple was struggling against the PC boom and another in 2007, which allowed

the company to pay a significantly reduced rate of tax on profits over more than 10 years. But following a three-year long investigation, EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said member states couldn't give such tax benefits to selected companies. She claimed the selective treatment allowed to Apple had left it paying an effective corporate tax rate of just 1 per cent on its European profits in 2003 down to 0.005 per cent in 2014. She went on: “This is illegal under EU state aid rules. The Commission's investigation concluded that Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple, which enabled it to pay substantially less tax than other businesses over many years.” Commissioner Vestager is right as things currently stand but rules can be changed. Any dealings with organisations like Apple involve serious business & serious business has nothing to do with fair play, but with interpretation, or even disregard, of all the rules. VW were paid millions by the EU because it was believed they had reduced emissions. Have they given back the money? How goes Fiat in Italy? Apple’s first facility in Ireland was based in Millstreet. Shortly after they moved to Hollyhill. Ireland and Apple have travelled a long road together.

Murder-suicide: Father's note won't be made public THE contents of a suspected murdersuicide note left by Alan Hawe will not be released to the public, given the likely extremely sensitive nature of it. A Garda search team began its examination of the family home in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, this week. Officers are speaking to family, friends, teaching colleagues and neighbours to see if they knew of any issues — marital, personal or workrelated — that could provide clues as to what drove the deputy principal to murder his entire family, then take his own life. An envelope found by the Garda Technical Bureau at the Hawe household was immediately preserved as evidence and sent to bureau HQ in Dublin for forensic examination. Detectives hoped it might be some sort of confession note explaining why Mr Hawe murdered his wife Clodagh, also a teacher, and their three children Liam, aged 13, Niall, 11 and Ryan, six, early on Monday.

All-Ireland senior and minor football c

Agony and ecstasy for Kerry in Croke Park CAPTURED ON camera here by Don MacMonagle, MacMonagle.com, is Kerry's day out in Croke Park at the All-Ireland minor and senior semi-finals. After the minors savoured their victory against Kildare on Sunday, there was absolute heartbreak for the Kerry senior team as their dream of an All-Ireland final date with Mayo on September 18 was snatched from them by the Blues. Kerry were pipped to the post by Dublin on a scoreline of Dublin 0-22, Kerry 2-14. After a pulsating game, points from sub Eoghan O’Gara and Diarmuid Connolly saw Dublin edge past the Kingdom in the All-Ireland senior football semifinal. HE MIGHT be older than Ireland but 103-year-old Michael O’Connor from Killarney is still full of energy and continues to lead a hectic social schedule. He has been lined up to officially launch this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show which has been scheduled for Fleming’s Farm, Grenagh, Fossa, for Sunday, September 11. Despite his great age, Michael still drives and he remains an enthusiastic gardener, zipping around his garden on his drive-on mower every chance he gets. And he attributes his long and healthy life to a love of the land and a little bit of mini ploughing of his own. “If you only dug a hole in your back garden today and filled it in tomorrow, you’re doing yourself a good turn,” he said. The ploughing event has already helped to generate in excess of €60,000 for local organisations and this year’s beneficiaries will be the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus. It is organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and features close on 200 trade stands. There will be two fashion shows on the day with sensational prizes on offer for the most stylish lady and the best-dressed man. Novelty sideshow events this year will include an all-breed dog show, a model farm show, a children’s baking competition and live bands to create a real party atmosphere. A major traffic management plan will be enforced with 60-acres of land set aside for free parking while the Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show will take place in an adjoining 60 acres of land owned by the Fleming family. The gates will open at 11am and patrons are advised to arrive early as there will be so much to see and do on the day.

French for All cruises into landmark 10th birthday BEST wishes to Helene Courtney of French for All as the school celebrates its 10th birthday. Helene started classes in Killarney under Alliance Française in 2004 and set up French for All in 2006, running classes for children aged seven to twelve, Junior Certificate students and fifth years, Leaving Cert students, as well as adults wishing to improve their fluency to enjoy holidays or to develop career opportunities. “The most important principle is to enjoy learning French. Role plays, knowledge-sharing through group work, real-life situations and articles, and a relaxed yet studious atmosphere, are the ingredients to allow students of all ages and levels to enjoy learning French,” said Helene. “Since 1995, I have worked in primary schools, secondary schools and third-level universities and ITs, and this has taught me to adapt to different levels and ages.” Monthly social events also allow students to meet and get a taste of French culture. “We enjoy petits dejeuners in Petit Delice for instance, quizzes, wine and food tasting, and even trips to France. We have gone on eight trips so far, with the last one taking place in May and venturing to the Alps,” said Helene. “I sincerely wish to thank all the students for their support and great work over the years, especially those who have been with us since the start! “My Leaving Cert students are very special to me as I feel I can really contribute to their success. They are going through enough stress and need to enjoy learning to succeed.”

Bavaria will sue VW over emissions scandal

Mercedes-Benz 500K Special Roadster stolen at end of WW2 up for auction

THE German state of Bavaria said it will sue Volkswagen Group for damages caused by the emissions-test cheating scandal, the first regional government in VW's home country to take legal action against the automaker. Bavaria's state pension fund for civil servants lost as much as €700,000 after VW shares plunged in the wake of the US regulators stating that VW had rigged diesel engines to lower NOx pollution. Bavaria's pension fund lost out from the fall in the shares. "We want this money back," said Bavarian Finance Minister Markus Soeder, a member of the Christian Social Union sister party of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats. Bavaria's pension fund plans to file its suit against VW in September at the regional court of Brunswick, near VW's Wolfsburg headquarters. Bavaria is home to German blue-chip companies including BMW, Siemens and Allianz. So far none of Germany's 16 federal states has taken legal action against VW over the scandal. VW's home state of Lower Saxony in June withheld backing for VW's former CEO Martin Winterkorn and current VW brand chief Herbert Diess in a vote to ratify their actions in 2015 when the scandal came to light. Both are subject of a probe by Brunswick prosecutors who are also investigating more than a dozen lower-level VW managers over the scandal. VW is caught up in legal action in the US, South Korea and elsewhere and is facing billions of dollars in costs related to its emissions-test manipulations.

THE 500K is one of the rarest and most exquisite automobiles ever built by Mercedes-Benz, with examples often fetching more than €1,000,000 at auctions. This one, though, is even more special. Built between 1934 and 1936, the Mercedes 500K carried the type W29 model designation. The K in its name highlighted its factory-installed and driver-activated Roots Kompressor (German for supercharger) producing 180hp from the vehicle’s straight-eight engine. Enough to take the 2,700kg model to a top speed of 160km/h. Three different chassis and eight body styles were available for customers, with 342 units manufactured. However, only 29 examples of the 500K Special Roadster were built, and this particular model – with a rather controversial history – is one of them. The car was tailored for German industrialist Hans Prym, but it disappeared in 1945, while he was serving a prison sentence handed to him by the Allies. Prym’s estate was used as a base for US troops serving under General Maurice Rose at the beginning of the march into Germany, and the car “mysteriously” vanished during that time. It’s believed that the American troops stole it, especially as it turned up in the USA almost a quarter of a century later. It was sold in 2011 for approximately €3.7 million to Dutch car enthusiast Frans van Haren, but in another twist of events, the car was seized by the German authorities when van Haren brought it to the Techno Classica car show in Essen, on account that the 500K Special Roadster belonged to the family of its first owner. In 2012, a court in Hamburg ruled that the US troops had no right to take the classic car and ordered that it should be returned to Prym’s heirs. Now, the vehicle is once again offered for sale by Bonhams, under the rightful owners, and it’s expected to fetch between €5 million and €7 million.

In loving memory of Nellie Courtney 75 St. Brendan’s Place, Killarney who died on 8th September, 1996.

Our lips cannot speak how we loved her, Our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss her, In our home that is lonely to-day.

In loving memory of Sheila Moynihan, Minish, Killarney, who died on 2nd September 2014. If we could have a lifetime wish and one dream that could come true. We would pray to God with all our hearts just to see and speak to you. A thousand words won’t bring you back We know because we’ve tried and neither will a million tears, We know because we’ve cried. You’ve left behind our broken hearts and precious memories too But we’ve never wanted memories We only wanted you. Love always your granddaughter Gillian xx

9th anniversary LiNEHAN

A Little Angel Today it would be wonderful To see you play or smile But heaven lent you to this world For just a little while. And in that short but precious time You brought along much love And all that love is with you now In heaven up above. Your leaving caused so many tears And such a lot of pain But God needed one more angel So He took you back again.

Time and years slip gently by, But love and memories never die, No longer in our lives to share, But Mom in our hearts you are always there. Sadly missed by your loving daughter Sheila. She was a mother so very rare, Content in her home and always there, On earth she toiled, in Heaven she rests, God bless you mother you were one of the best. Sadly missed by your loving daughter Hannah. We lost a mother with a heart of gold, How much we miss her can never be told. She shared our troubles and helped us along, If we follow in her footsteps we will never go wrong.

pRAyER TO ST. jOSEpH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. A.P.

Spa Muckross Community Games

Congratulations to all our swimmers on competing in the Community Games national finals in Athlone on the first weekend of competitions (12th14th August). Well done to Ian Coffey (breaststroke), Faye O’Neill (backstroke), Ethan O’Neill (breaststroke) Niamh Coffey (backstroke), and Ian, Niall and Cathal Coffey, and Ethan O’Neill in the U13 relay. Even though the standard was extremely high, our swimmers swam very competitively, with personal bests and semi-final positions achieved. The second weekend saw our track, judo & gymnastics competitors heading to Athlone. The track was a hive of activity over both days, with the heavy rain and wind failing to dampen the spirits of Cian Russell, Jason O’Reilly and Marie Courtney. All three were up against very stiff competition, as the track events attract high numbers in each race, with most counties in the country being represented. Jason progressed to his 200m final on Sunday afternoon, and performed brilliantly in an extremely fast race. Meanwhile, in other campus locations, Anna O’Shea was being presented with a gold medal in gymnastics, and later on Sunday, word filtered through that Mairéad Bennett’s judo performances had secured another gold for Kerry, and Ali O’Donoghue added to the pot with a bronze medal in judo. Congratulations to these young ladies, you did an amazing job of representing both Spa Muckross, and Kerry. A huge thanks to all our local, county & national committees/volunteers. Community Games will be celebrating its 50 year anniversary in 2017, so it will be an extra special year - extra special means extra work, so any parents who would like to become involved, please do make an effort to attend our AGM later in the year. The children of the current committee members are nearing the max age (u16) for Community Games, at which point they will move on. Finally, congratulations to the Kerry minor footballers on a fantastic semi-final win; one or two former Spa Muckross Community Games lads on that team. Hard luck to the seniors super performances all round.

We fielded 19 teams last year, plus non-competitive coaching and blitzes for big numbers from U7 to U10, Football for All, and our Soccer Tots Programme, but in order to continue to do that, we need volunteers to help make sure that everyone is playing in a safe and enjoyable environment. Full training and support will be given. just ahead of last year’s winner Patsy O’Flaherty. Luke Murphy, juvenile angler, fished with his grandad Michael and finished a great third. Some good news on the national front. Recently the Board of Inland Fisheries (IFI) proposed to exit the production of trout for the re-stocking of angling lakes. This would have affected a number of lakes in Kerry. However, following a meeting with a joint delegation from the National Anglers Representative Association (NARA) & Trout Anglers Federation of Ireland (TAFI), the Board of IFI has agreed to defer its proposal indefinitely. Finally, LLA’s next outing is on Caragh Lake this Sunday. Tight lines & safe fishing to all.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett was in the vanguard of the group of 19 Members of the Men’s Club as they embarked on a trip to Wales last weekend. Liam outlined, as the tour commenced, that the “theme” for the trip would be one of “friendship” and that set the tone from the start to the finish, for the entire tour. The tour participants included 5 former Club Captains, and amongst them was the man who was responsible for resurrecting the Southerndown connection, Senator Paul Coughlan. The trip commenced with a game in Tramore, where we were playing via the friendship between Men’s Club PRO, Victor Mulcahy, and Tramore Member and the current Irish Walker Cup selector, Michael Burns, and suf-

fice to say that Killarney were well and truly beaten. Tramore who celebrated their win in the Irish Senior Cup and Barton Shield of 1992, and their team included a number of the players of that winning team. Day two was played against Southerndown Golf Club, with whom we “twinned” with in 1968, and with a generous concession from Captain Liam, the match was called a draw. The subsequent evening’s festivities was again in the spirit as laid down, and was a most enjoyable occasion and culminated with Liam, on behalf of the Club, presenting a silver salver commemorating our 50 years of mutual friendship, to their Club Captain, as the first visit of Southerndown to Killarney was in 1966. Day three was at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club, and in order to facilitate the watching of the All-Ireland semi-final we played a scramble there, and this was won by Jack Buckley, Chris Collins, Paudie Sheahan and Barry Duggan. Club Captain of Pyle and Kenfig, in accepting a gift from Club Captain Liam, expressed that a wish for a reciprocal visit from members of their Club to Killarney would be very much on the cards for 2017. Liam’s theme was well and truly upheld, throughout the tour and a great time was enjoyed by all of the partakers.

Sunday the 28th of August was an “Open” day, and played on Killeen, results were as follows: 1st Tommy Crowe (11) 42 points 2nd George Vass (5) 41 points 3rd John Lynch (11) 39 points 4th James Devane (9) 37 points 5th Seamus O’Donoghue (11) 37 points.

Lough Lein Anglers

Recently our members took to the waters of Lough Currane, Watervillle to fish for the Batty O’Brien Cup. Batty, a deceased member of LLA, spent many days on Lough Currane and knew well that every angler earns his/her trout in Waterville. Conditions were difficult when anglers set off. Unfortunately both the wind and rain increased during the day and fishing wasn’t easy ! Nevertheless trout were caught and prizes were well-earned. Jimmy O’Sullivan took the top prize,

This Sunday we travel to the sea trout waters of Lough Currane, with hopefully the weather on our side, for our annual competition there. Hot on the heels of this trip, we have the Mar Loughlan competition taking place on Lough Lein the following Sunday the 11th of September. This is a pick your partner competition , entry fee €15 and the club fishes in conjunction with a number of other angling clubs. The top four on the day from each club are identified and from their catches, the top three places overall are nominated - the winners being awarded the Mar Loughlan Shield for 2016. Our club winner will be awarded with the Michael Fleming Memorial Trophy on the day. Any members interested in partaking should contact the club treasurer soonest to enter. Also on the news front, following on from last weeks notification on potential plans by the IFI to cease fish stock production, they have relented to angling concerns and have withdrawn their proposal - below is the statement they released: “Friday, 26th of August 2016: The Board of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) met yesterday with a joint delegation from the National Anglers Representative Association and Trout Anglers Federation of Ireland to discuss IFI’s proposal to exit the production of trout for the re-stocking of angling lakes. As a result of these discussions the Board of IFI has agreed to defer its proposal indefinitely. However, in the discussions the parties recognised that there are significant economic, environmental and biological issues surrounding the current production facilities which IFI needs to resolve. Inland Fisheries Ireland is committed to developing and seeking funding for a comprehensive strategy to meet current and future trout production needs, contingent on obtaining the significant investment required. The parties to the discussions agreed to continue to work closely together to deliver this strategy. The Board of IFI wishes to acknowledge and thank all those who have made submissions to the public consultation on IFI’s exiting from freshwater trout production. This consultation process is now closed.

Magical day out at Killarney House & Gardens A PICTURE-PERFECT setting formed the backdrop to the eagerly anticipated formal launch of the gardens at Killarney House last Friday. The launch was officiated by the Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring, and music, pageantry, activities and fun for all the

family was the order of the day. The house itself will open next March, and last Friday’s function afforded locals the earliest opportunity to see at first-hand the on-going restoration and magnificent re-creation of the visitor attraction, which has been funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and Fáilte Ireland.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Dublin pip Kerry in Croke Park thriller Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews Sunday’s All-Ireland senior and minor semi-finals SO NEAR and yet so far in Kerry’s bid for a place in this year’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final. Dublin pipped Kerry 0-22 to 2-14 in a thrilling SFC semi-final at Croke Park. Just like the 1977 semi-final this was a classic game played at a frenetic pace and contested with great intensity throughout. It is little consolation for the players and Eamon Fitzmaurice and his backroom team that Kerry have been engaged in these two classic games. Winner takes all. I think in particular of the over-30s in the squad, Aidan O’Mahony, Marc O Se, Kieran Donaghy, Colm Cooper and Bryan Sheehan. The latter two may well give it one more year but for O’Mahony, Donaghy and O Sé it is surely time to take down the tent where they played heroic games for Kerry. Time to say goodbye to a passion that has engaged their total lives well over the last decade.

sions, especially with Dean Rock as steady as his father ever was ending with a whopping 12 points, 2 from play, 2 from 45s and 8 from placed balls. KERRY SELECTORS

The Kerry selectors had prepared well and got the match-ups correct, but just as they did with James O’Donoghue last year and again on Sunday they brought on Marc O Sé in the last few minutes and drew ashore their best forward by far, the man who scored 1-4 and the most likely to get those equalising points. Yes, Paul Geaney cut a lonesome figure coming off and there was no chance of Marc O Sé getting a score. Thus he equalled the record of 86 championship appearances of his brother Tomás. No place for sentimentality in the white heat of Croke Park on the big day. Marc and Tomás gave mighty service to Kerry, but the time comes to fold the tent.

THE REF

The decisions of referee David Gough were not welcomed by the Kerry supporters. I was happy with the referee, for the most part. He allowed a lot to go on with heavy tackling by both sides. However, he got at least two key calls wrong when the outcome of the game was in the melting pot. Kevin McManamon grounded Peter Crowley in an illegal tackle, but to my utter surprise the referee failed to award Kerry a free. At that stage Bryan Sheehan was on the field and he was well within scoring range but lo and behold the ref pointed the play towards the Hill. That would have brought them all square and the ref could well have blown for full time not utilising the full six minutes in time added on. The play went down field and The Hill danced as Diarmuid Connolly sealed victory with a point. McManamon was also involved in the other controversial decision to award a 45, which was converted for the Dubs. The teams were that close that a draw was the ideal finale, but it was not to be and I am sure that when Gough looks back on this game he will regret these two calls. It is little consolation to Kerry that he got so many of the calls correct during the game. Dublin was five points adrift at half time and were still three points in arrears with just nine minutes left. The sides were level on 70 minutes The game was so evenly contested that it was inevitable that it would come down to match turning deci-

GEANEY SHINES

Dublin took the initiative from the start and it took Kerry 12 minutes before they registered their first score, a point from David Moran, who went on to have a great game, with Maher off the pace. Goals from Darran O Sullivan and the bangin- form Paul Geaney put Kerry five points to the good as the teams headed for the dressing rooms at half –time. Dublin picked away at reducing the deficit but Kerry kept in touch until the Dubs' Late Late Show. For Dublin Dean Rock, Kevin McManamon, and Johnny Cooper did best. Paul Geaney was Kerry’s best player, scoring 1-4. Brian Kelly did well bringing off a great save early in the game. He had mixed fortunes with his kickouts, but those that were conceded were not his fault, as he was offered few options by the Kerry defence and the midfield. Others to shine were Shane Enright who kept danger man Bernard Brogan to just two points. Moran did well overall as did Colm Cooper who scored five points, four from frees. MINORS ON TARGET FOR THREE-IN-A-ROW

As expected, the Kerry minors booked their passage to the final with a powerful display which brushed Kildare aside. The final score was Kerry 2-26, Kildare 0-10. Star player for Kerry was Fossa man David Clifford, who scored eight points, six from play. What a pre-

cocious talent destined for senior stardom within a few years. Well done, David. David Shaw, one of 4 Croke players in the starting 15, also caught the eye, coming in with 1-3 from play. More about this minor squad on the run up to the final. Kilkenny bid for McCarthy Cup. It should have been Waterford v Tipperary in next Sunday’s All Ireland SHC final at Croke Park, but Kilkenny are there again and are the bookies favourites to retain their title. Having escaped to draw with Waterford, they made no mistake in the replay. What are Tipperary’s chances on Sunday at Croke Park? They will have a real cut and I give them a sporting chance to knock Kilkenny off the pedestal. Cormac Bonner, a Killarney-domiciled former Tipperary full forward who retired recently as principal of Presentation Secondary School, Milltown, will be stepping out on the Croke Park turf for the 25-year

wave to the spectators. Cormac Bonner was full forward on the 1991 Tipperary team which won the McCarthy Cup. Three Bonner brothers played on that winning team. They were Cormac Bonner, Colm Bonar and Connall Bonnar. No typo here as this extraordinary family has three different spellings in their surnames. I met Cormac on Monday and he is confident that Tipp can dethrone Kilkenny. “The loss of midfielder Michael Fennelly is huge for Kilkenny, as the Tipp duo of Barrett and Maher should give us the extra pull. Other key players include centre back Ronan Maher and up front of course we have Seamus Callanan. It will be nip and tuck, somewhat like the football game on Sunday last and the game may well be decided on successful turnovers. I expect Tipp to do it, “ said the towering full forward of the 1989 and 1991 victorious teams. 02.09.16 Killarney Advertiser

Kids aged 4-10 from the Killarney area are invited to come along and sign up. For more information contact Seán at 087 2225325. GAELIC FOR ALL We were delighted to be involved in the new Gaelic for All initiative by Kerry GAA, Kerry County Council and the South Kerry Development Partnership. It involved an introduction to football for kids who have not yet sampled GAA. Done in conjunction with Dr Crokes and Spa, there were two nights of coaching at each club’s grounds. Many thanks to County Board coach Giles O’Grady, Children’s Officer Christina Tangney, Seán Culloty, Enda Walshe and Joanne Downey for their assistance in what was a very enjoyable experience all around. Full marks to Bernie Reen and Áine Ní Shúilleabháin of the Kerry County Board for their organisation of the initiative.

JUNIORS Congratulations to the juniors who won their third County League title in four years with an excellent victory over Gneeveguilla last week. Played in Derreen in front of a healthy crowd, Legion were just a bit too strong on the night for a Gneeveguilla outfit who had actually beaten our lads twice during the course of the current season. Final score: Killarney Legion 3-15 Gneeveguilla 1-12. Well done to everyone involved and a special thanks to mentors Thomas Lyne, Michael B. O’Donoghue, Enda Walshe and Connie O’Shea for their hard work throughout the campaign. LADIES Well done to the senior ladies who qualified for the semi-final of Division 4 of the County League with a win over Abbeydorney. U-11 BOYS Our U-11 boys had a fine win over Firies in the East Kerry League as both teams put on a wonderful display of skilful football. A lot of credit must go to the coaches on both sides who are obviously putting a lot of time and effort into developing these young players. Well done to all involved. U-13 BOYS Our U-13s recently competed in the Rose Cup in Tralee and gave a good account of themselves in difficult conditions. A big thank you to the organisers of the event, especially host club Na Gaeil for their wonderful hospitality. U-16 BOYS Commiserations to the lads who just came up short against Cordal/Scartaglen in a playoff to get to the semi-final of the County League. Having trailed by ten points at half time, a much-improved second half display saw the deficit cut to just three but Cordal/Scart managed to hold on for the win. INJURIES Best wishes to senior players Billy McGuire and Peter McCarthy who have picked up unfortunate injuries in the past couple of weeks. We wish them a speedy recovery and hope to see them back in action as quickly as possible. ALFIE The club would like to offer its sincere condolences to our neighbours the McGillycuddys on the passing of their dog, Alfie. Alfie was a regular visitor to our grounds in Derreen and he will be greatly missed.

Milltown/ Castlemaine

Milltown Castlemaine took on Glenbeigh Glencar in the O’Sullivan Cup-in the Paddy Burke Memorial Park on Tuesday evening. Final Score: Milltown Castlemaine 2-13 Glenbeigh Glencar 3-09. Well done to both teams for a superb effort. Kerry Minors: Well done to The Kerry minors on reaching the All Ireland Final after their comprehensive defeat of Kildare at the weekend. What a game to watch. The future of Kerry football certainly looks very bright with these young footballers. Great credit must go to their manager Peter Keane and his backroom team of Tommy Griffin, Chris Flannery and Padraig Murphy. Our senior goal keeper, Cormac Leane is part of this group of promising footballers. Well done Cormac, your club is very proud of your achievements.

Kerry Seniors: Commiserations to the Kerry senior panel who unfortunately bowed out of the championship despite an enormous effort against Dublin. You all played your hearts out –you should be so proud of the way you represented yourselves, your clubs and your county. Tiocfaidh ár lá. Well done to the management team on their work with the team too.
