"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

‘Why is St Finan’s lying idle?’ Eve Kelliher meets with community members who are seeking answers as to why the St Finan’s Hospital building and grounds are not being utilised FOR 160 years, St Finan’s Hospital in Killarney served as a psychiatric hospital but as new approaches in psychiatric care developed it closed its doors. Now members of the community are asking why the landmark building and its spacious grounds cannot be used for the greater good. Councillor Michael Gleeson raised the matter at this month's meeting of Kerry county Council, asking the council to urge the Health Service Executive to detail the cost during the past year of ensuring adequate security, heating and general maintenance. The building officially closed its doors as a psychiatric hospital in September 2012. Suggestions flowed this week from members of the community as to what it could be used for, including for housing for elderly people, returning emigrants, people with a disability working locally, or young people. Don O’Donoghue, who worked at St Finan’s for 38 years, noted that the facility

would be ideal for wheelchair users. “People who are working but have a disability and have to use a wheelchair often find that houses are not always appropriately equipped,” he told Killarney Advertiser. Donie O’Dowd, who has also expressed his interest in preserving the hospital for the good of the wider community, said: “Retired single people or couples who have lived and worked abroad and do not want to start all over again owning property or have never owned their own property could benefit,” he said. “These people have often left behind their social networks in the country they emigrated to and come home to find it very difficult to re-establish social contacts and friends.” Councillor Gleeson added: “Representatives of the residents would form part of the membership. The development of St Finan’s would fire up other accommodation in the Killarney area.”

Time to tackle homelessness IT’S PROBABLY because of the colder weather and shorter days, but the idea of homelessness is one that sends a shudder down our collective spines at this time of year. The disturbing plight of men, women and children without a roof over their heads was highlighted by Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Kate O’Leary and Kerry County Council member Niall Kelleher on Friday, when they joined fellow activists in a sleepout

in Cork in aid of homelessness charity Focus Ireland. You can read about their experience on page 28. Meanwhile, This week I met up with a group of locals who did a bit of outside-the-box thinking in terms of utilising the landmark St Finan’s building for accommodation, particularly in these times of housing shortages (see story above). Question

I have been told I need to get a flu vaccine. Can I get it for free? Answer

Influenza, usually known as the flu, is highly infectious and anyone can get it. However some groups are at greater risk of complications if they get the flu. This includes people over the age of 65, pregnant women and people who have a chronic medical condition. The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. The flu virus changes every year and this is why there is a new vaccine each year. Vaccination is strongly recommended if you: •Are aged 65 and over •Have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease •Have an impaired immune system due to disease or treatment •Have a body mass index (BMI) over 40 •Are pregnant •Live in a nursing home or other long-stay institution •Are a carer or a healthcare worker •Have regular contact with poultry, water fowl or pigs You can get the vaccine from your GP (family doctor) or pharmacist. Children can get the vaccine from a GP. The vaccine itself is free of charge if you are in one of the recommended groups. However, doctors and pharmacists may charge a consultation fee when they give you the vaccine. If you have a medical card or GP visit card you can get the vaccine without being charged a consultation fee. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

BIG congratulations to Killarney man Ljatif Saiti who won the top prize of €200,000 on his All Cash Spectacular scratch card which he purchased in Healy’s Newsagent in his hometown. Ljatif, who is originally from Kosovo, was joined by his family as he collected his whopping €200,000 prize at National Lottery headquarters in Dublin on Tuesday. “This is an unbelievable win for our family,” said Ljatif who was coming to terms with his good fortune in the National Lottery Winners Room. Ljatif, who moved to Killarney from Kosovo with his family in 1999, said of the moment he knew that his luck was in with his scratch card: “I would treat myself to a scratch card every week and I would always bring them home to scratch them. This time however, I scratched it there and then in the shop and I saw my number matching up with the €200,000 prize. I quickly handed it back to the shop keeper to check that I wasn’t dreaming.” The National Lottery All Cash Spectacular is a €10 scratch card which has over €10,000,000 in cash prizes on offer. There are two top prizes of €200,000, one of which is still up for grabs! Discussing his plans for his winnings, Ljatif said: “This is all still new to us. We will enjoy the win first and then we will decide on what to spend the money on. We have four beautiful children so it is important that their future is the priority.”

Tourism leaders take action in Kerry

A NEW seven-year action plan for tourism in Kerry hopes to address key areas including adventure, branding and marketing, community tourism, events and festivals, education, enterprise and innovation, environment and infrastructure. The County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan 20162022 comes following the most widespread consultation and in-depth analysis of tourism ever undertaken in the county. The campaign, which was published by Kerry County Council on Friday, was launched in St John’s Theatre in Listowel by the Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Council, Cllr Liam Purtill. “Kerry is Ireland’s premier regional tourist destination,” said Cllr Purtill. “It has been welcoming visitors for generations and today attracts 1.7m overseas and domestic holidaymakers which generate over €420m in tourist-related income for the county. Kerry boasts some of Ireland’s most iconic scenery like the Lakes of Killarney, Skellig Michael, Slea Head Drive and the golden beaches of North Kerry and has the longest section of the new Wild Atlantic Way touring route. It also has vibrant cultural, food and craft sectors and a rich natural, built and linguistic heritage,” he said. The plan also aims to extend the tourism activity into the shoulder season as well as promote Kerry’s green and clean image, and further develop the Wild Atlantic Way.

‘No imminent closure’, but St Mary of the Angels future unclear, says Kerry TD THE Taoiseach Enda Kenny yesterday stated that “no imminent closure” would be enforced on the St Mary of the Angels centre in Beaufort. The issue was raised in Dáil Éireann by Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae in the context of the HSE Report entitled “Time to Move on from Congregated Settings, A Strategy for Community Inclusion”. Deputy Healy-Rae said: “My problem with the report is that it is closing these facilities down. These facilities are centres of excellence for dealing with people with intellectual and physical disabilities.” Deputy Healy-Rae added: “What is the answer

for the young parents of today who have children for whom they are not able to provide full time care for at home? There is no place for them to go while we are closing down centres of excellence.” Mr Kenny noted that in 2008, 4,000 people resided in congregated settings whereas in September 2014, that number was approximately 3,200. Today, the figure is under 2,225, added the Taoiseach. “With regard to St Mary of the Angels, it is important to say that there is no imminent closure involved here,” he said. “The HSE is consulting with the families and local communities to find the best solution

Lonely Planet declares Skellig Ring ‘Best in Travel’ THE Skellig Ring drive in Co Kerry has been named one of the Top Ten Regions in the world to visit in 2017 by Lonely Planet. The leading travel media company has unveiled the accolade in the prestigious Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2017 – its collection of the world’s hottest trends, destinations and experiences for the coming year. On the southwest tip of the Wild Atlantic Way, The Skellig Ring is a coastal drive that is an extension of the Ring of Kerry, which Lonely Planet describes as “a wild and emerald stretch of coastline”. Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross said: “I am delighted that The Skellig Ring is being internationally recognised as a place of rugged and ethereal beauty. An integral part of our Wild Atlantic Way, it is a place both wild and majestic. The early monks who settled in this area believed they had reached the edge of the world and anyone who has travelled The Skellig Ring can appreciate the co-existing impressions of timelessness and mortality the landscape evokes. When George Bernard Shaw visited there in 1910 he wrote; ‘I tell you the thing does not belong to any world that you and I have lived and worked in; it is part of our dream world’, and anyone who visits today could not but agree.”

for each individual. I understand that the St John of God services have acknowledged that communications could and should have been better in this regard so that everybody knew what was involved.” However, this indication from the Taoiseach did not satisfy Deputy Healy-Rae. The Kerry TD also invited that the Taoiseach and Minister McGrath to visit Saint Mary of the Angels. “I want the Taoiseach and the Minister of State to come to Kerry to look at St. Mary of the Angels as an example of the service being provided to these people.”

Curtain up on Glenflesk Rambling House THOSE seeking a slice of good, old-fashioned entertainment should make tracks for Glenflesk this Sunday, October 10, for its 10th annual rambling house. Admission is €5 and the tea, brack, ceol and craic will be available aplenty from 8pm to 11pm. Performers in last year's Glenflesk Rambling House.

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team celebrates half a century of saving lives

Smiles and stories at golden anniversary FRIENDS of all ages converged on Kerry Mountain Rescue Team’s headquarters on the grounds of Killarney Garda Station on Saturday to help the team mark its 50th birthday. Later on celebrations continued at Kate Kearney’s Cottage, in the Gap of Dunloe, where many a story was recalled from bygone years by past and present crew including founding members. The team was formed in Easter 1966 following a tragic holiday period in Kerry. Within a few days of one another, a student from University College Dublin and a teenage member of an English school party were killed in separate incidents on Carrantuohill, Ireland's highest peak. It was as a direct result of these two tragedies that the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was formed in July 1966, largely as a result of the vision and energy of Frank Lewis of Killarney. The Team at that stage consisted of a group of concerned people who were prepared to set their own lives at risk to help others in distress. Early members included Paddy O'Callaghan, Stan Brick, Gearóid O'Sullivan and Richard Morrison, Killorglin, along with Killarney representatives such as Terence Casey and John McGuire. Meetings were held around the fireplace in Paddy's house, and as Gearóid O'Sullivan recalled: "It didn't matter whether we had high heels or mountaineering boots at the time – those questions weren't even asked then.”

ONE of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team’s most notable first call-outs was an epic all-night mountain rescue in July 1967. The team was dispatched to rescue Bill Collins, after whom Collins’ Gully is named, on the eastern face of Carrantuohill. Bill and his mountaineering partner Con Horgan were about 150 metres from the summit when Bill slipped and became wedged in rocks below. He sustained a compound fracture of the right leg and right arm, along with head injuries. Con Horgan heroically faced the dangerous descent and raised the alarm at Beaufort Garda Station at 7.30pm. The team endured horrendous conditions of pelting rain and gale-force winds, continuing to work for eight hours to bring the stretcher with the injured Bill Collins to the foot of Carrantuohill, and a further three hours to meet the ambulance, before he was removed to hospital. The brave rescuers had spent a total of 19 hours on the mountain, without food or sleep. Bill and Con joined forces with three of the original rescue team, Terence Casey, retired garda John O'Sullivan and Eric Brick, at Kerry Mountain Rescue Team’s 50th anniversary celebration at the rescue station headquarters on Saturday.

Pres girls turn back time

WELL, the soundtrack has certainly changed from when the likes of The Bangles and Simply Red were topping the charts, but that didn’t stop the fun as the St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School Leaving Certificate class of 1989 reunited at the weekend. Friendships were renewed as the past pupils travelled back in time. The Class of ’89 reunion took place in The Brehon Hotel, Killarney, where a drinks reception was followed by dinner.

‘Family homelessness has reached historic proportions’

The biggest factor in homelessness is bad luck

By Councillor Niall Kelleher ON OCTOBER 21, I slept out on the grounds of Cork City Gaol to shine a light on the issue of homelessness in Ireland today. I joined other business leaders to raise funds to support the vital work of Focus Ireland and their aim to end homelessness in Ireland. Family homelessness has reached historic proportions in Ireland with more than 2100 children living in emergency homeless accommodation in Ireland often unable to get to school, rarely getting a home cooked meal and sinking into darkness. I don't want to accept this as today's landscape in Ireland so I joined my peers to make a difference.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Kate O’Leary of The Laurels Pub, highlights the plight of homeless people SAFE in the knowledge that I would be returning home to my warm house and happy home, I set off to sleep rough with 30 others in Cork city Gaol last Friday night to raise funds and awareness for Focus Ireland, the charity that helps the homeless in our society. We were well prepared and well looked after. The weather was as if we wrote away for it dry and calm. We had hot drinks and food before we bedded down. Hardly the experience of the people we were raising money to assist. We heard from two very brave people in their late 20s about their experience, how they went off the rails and how Focus Ireland guided them back on the right path. The High Hopes choir (all homeless at one point in their lives) sang for us and told us what a positive effect the choir has had on their lives. Then we went outside and tried to sleep. And we did...a little. I woke at six when the cold damp air started to creep into my consciousness. I packed up and headed home for Kerry. Did I put my hand in the wound of homelessness? No. My two boys were safe in their beds, the fridge was full, the house was warm and it is our home. All I did was sleep outdoors. No more, no less. But the financial support I got from friends, family, colleagues and of course the no name club will help families who are homeless. The amount of homeless families in Cork has tripled in one year. That is so frightening Focus Ireland told us hat the biggest factor in homelessness is not drugs or alcohol or poverty. It is hugely down to bad luck. Thank you for your support, there but for the grace of God and great families go any of us. It's not too late to donate.

‘If dispute is not rectified it puts pressure on us students’ Jack Cronin, a second-level student, shares his views on the teachers’ strikes THE Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland has announced seven strike days for 2016. The reason for these strikes is the hope for pay equalisation for newly qualified teachers and objecting to having pay restoration measures such as payment for supervision and substitution duties. Up to 250,000 students will be unable to attend school on these strike days. It is believed that about 500 out of the 730 schools in Ireland will not be able to open after the mid-term break on Monday, November 7, if the ASTI dispute is not rectified. The plan of recruiting seems to have failed as ASTI won’t allow its members to help with the process and there’s no time for schools to recruit, train and vet supervisors. From a student’s point of view, I believe these strikes are a disruption to our education. Almost every year we get one or two strike days which are spread over time. These days have little or no effect on our education. The fact that there are seven strike days this year is guaranteed to have an impact on us. Even if the

days were very spread out, that number is simply too much time to be missing. What makes this even worse is the fact that the strike days are all in October, November and December. This includes one strike day every week for four weeks in November. There are also two strikes on the same week in December. That will definitely disrupt the running of schools. The exam year students, Junior Cert and Leaving Cert, will suffer the most from these strikes. Having done my Junior Cert last year, I know that at the end of the final term there is a lot of work put in by teachers and students to finish the exam course. These seven days of absence will add extra pressure to try and cover everything before the exams. I hope that these seven days will end the dispute and if strike days are needed in the future hopefully there will be less and they will more spread out over the year so it won’t extremely affect our education.

wedding update of the week update

Wheels set in motion for big day out BY EVE KELLIHER

O

NE wedding led to another for Ashley Casey and Barry FitzGerald. Ashley, from Cromane, and Barry, from Ballyhahill, co Limerick, met at a mutual friend’s wedding on New Year’s Eve 2010. Barry surprised Ashley by popping the question at Torc in August 2015. “Barry had told me he wanted to check out the steps on Cardiac Hill in advance of Killarney Adventure Race in October,” said Ashley. “Under protest, I went and climbed the first two sets of steps. When we got to the first viewpoint I turned around and Barry was down on one knee. It was well timed in advance of my 30th birthday the following week.” They were wed recently in St Michael’s Church, Killorglin, by Reverend Jim Stephens and held their reception in the Heights Hotel, Killarney. As the groom is a keen racing cyclist, his fellow cyclists formed a guard of honour, complete with bicycles, as the newlyweds emerged from the church. Both sets of parents, Jane and Patrick Casey and Tina and Noel FitzGerald helped the couple plan the perfect big day.

Lending their support as bridesmaids were Michelle O'Reilly, Siobhain Colborne and Kate O'Connell, while the groomsmen were James FitzGerald (Barry’s brother), Paudie Sheehan and Pa Ahern. Ava Colborne and Noah O’Connell were flower girl and pageboy respectively. “Our wedding day was everything we had hoped for and more!” said Ashley. The bride looked stunning in a Maggie Sottero gown sourced in Memories Bridal Boutique in Cork. Photographer Ann McNamee of Paper Hearts and videographer Ian Armstrong, StoryBegins captured the big day on camera. Their honeymoon took the Listowel-based newlyweds to the Seychelles and Dubai for 10 nights. Ashley is global marketing executive with PulseLearning, Kerry Technology Park, Tralee, and Barry is production supervisor in Profile Developments, Glin, Co Limerick. • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Thank you from ploughing championship organisers ON BEHALF of the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club, we would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for all your assistance and hard work with the fantastic advertisements and columns you have advertised on our behalf for all our club events and in particular for this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships & Harvest Show. Your support and professionalism has helped us in running our event so efficiently and thank you for showing us that we can always depend on the Killarney Advertiser. We cannot recommend you highly enough. As we continue to grow as a club, it would not be possible to run this event without the partnership with our sponsor. We are delighted to announce that this year, with your help and support, an impressive sum of €36,600 was raised for our chosen charities, the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry Branch for the Irish Kidney Association with a donation given to the autism unit of Fossa National School and St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School in Tralee of €500 each. Finally, we at the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club and South Kerry Ploughing Championships & Harvest Show would like to take this opportunity to wish the Killarney Advertiser continued success and we look forward to working with you again in the future. Tom Leslie, chairman, and Laura Wickham, acting secretary, South Kerry Ploughing Championships & Harvest Show

St Finan’s building needs to be utilised AT THE October 2016 monthly meeting of Kerry County Council, I proposed that Kerry County Council would ask the HSE to detail the cost during 2015 of ensuring adequate security, heating and general maintenance of the magnificent building that is Saint Finan’s Hospital, Killarney, and I would further ask what plans, if any, the HSE has for the immediate future fruitful use of that Sir Thomas Deans-designed building. For 160 years Saint Finan’s Psychiatric Hospital sought to serve the needs of the people of Kerry but gradually new approaches to psychiatric care came to the fore. On September 25, 2012, the building officially ceased to function as a psychiatric hospital. Since then it has largely been lying idle. There is money being expended on heating, security and general basic maintenance. This is not the wisest way to spend scarce resources or the best way to maximise the potential of a fine building. If the HSE has no use for the building then they should enter into discussion with Kerry County Council and with the housing agencies with a view to developing the interior as a place where many would be beautifully accommodated. I think of elderly people living isolated and alone, exiles who wish to return to their own country, people with a disability who are working locally, students or young people starting their working lives that could be accommodated to socialise with the elderly. These young people would have their own room but would eat and share a sitting room with other residents. There are many others. Saint Finan’s has many advantages. It is centrally located, proximate to all social and medical services. It has ample recreational grounds and commands spectacular views. The motion was passed unanimously and I await a response from the HSE. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

Top tip of the month CLEANING glass jars, vases and candle holders is made easy with, of all things ,denture tablets, I recently came across this tip: just pop a tablet in and fill with warm water and leave for 15 to 20 minutes and – voila – a sparkling jar. I’ve used this and found the results amazing especially for vases with fresh flowers.

Choosing the perfect sofa Fa ma Calisto Sofa Moriarty's of Killorglin

WHETHER you are looking for a place to sit and chat or a cosy spot to plop down and read a book, sofas are a staple in any lounge area. But with endless options at our fingertips, finding the perfect sofa can be overwhelming to say the least. Consider the following main points before choosing a sofa and your shopping experience will go from intimidating to exciting. SIZE Consider how large your room is, the height of the ceiling, and which other furnishings you want to incorporate in the room. Make sure the sofa’s length, depth, and height are in proportion to your room. Making up a template in cardboard or newspaper and putting it on the floor gives you a great idea of what space your sofa will take up and if there is enough space for ease of movement in the room, and for your other furniture.

COLOUR The colour you choose for your sofa is very important and can make or break your room. It can either match the rest of the dĂŠcor in its general lines or it can coordinate with certain key elements. It can also be the one piece that stands out without having to match anything. Once you decide if your sofa will be an accent or neutral colour, you'll need to decide if your sofa will be light or dark. Your floor colour has a big effect on choosing the right sofa colour. If you're considering a potential sofa sitting on your floor, will it float on a sea of dark wood floor or carpet or will it blend into it? Because a sofa is traditionally large and upholstered, and most fabric absorbs light, it can darken a room considerably. A trick I use when considering a new sofa colour is to find a sheet or blanket in a similar colour and drape it over the existing sofa. This gives you an idea of how the colour will look, and if the sofa will be too dark or too light for the room. Don't forget accent pillows and throws as the finishing touches when coordinating your new sofa with your room decor. These little pops of colour give your living room that pulled-together look.

TYPE The size and function of your room will dictate the type of sofa that best fits your space. Is this a small, formal area for conversation? Opt for a loveseat, settee, or sofa with more petite dimensions. Is this a large room where you gather to relax or watch a movie? Choose a deep sofa or corner sofa where you can tuck up your feet and snuggle in for the night.

UPHOLSTERY

Select a fabric that is in-line with the function of the space. Determine if it is a high-use area. In a formal living room or master bedroom you can get away with a light cotton or linen upholstery, but in a high-use area with kids and pets, stick to a textile that is easy to clean removable covers are an option, or choose a leather.

How to select curtains to team with your sofa AS ANY decorator will tell you, curtains make a room—but only when chosen correctly. When it comes to window treatments, it's a matter of colour and fabric, length and lining, and custom-made versus off-the-shelf. With so many decisions, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, so here’s some advice on narrowing down the options and selecting the right curtains for your home.

the window will give a sense of height to the room. Designers often hang curtains about six inches above the window frame, but for a dramatic look, some go higher. For a more traditional look, with the curtain slightly puddled on the floor, you'll want to add two or three inches to your length. For a modern, crisp look, have the panel fall flush with the floor. When measuring the width of your window, be sure to add four to eight inches on both sides and double the total number to ensure curtain fullness. This will also depend on what pleat you are using.

COLOUR AND FABRIC Fabric is an essential part of choosing curtains, since the material will dictate how well your curtains function and hold up over time. If they're too heavy, they may not fold crisply when drawn; too light and they may not fall well Try holding fabrics up to a window, even in a fabric showroom. Pleat it like an accordion at the top and let it drape, if it starts to flare like a piece of crinoline, then it's not going to fall nicely on the window." Try and work with a big sample, at least 2 yards, since a smaller piece may not show the fabric's true drape. It may be worth buying a yard as if it’s a large area mistakes can be costly. Sunlight will fade fabrics over time. If the room gets a lot of light, it's smart to avoid bright colours, since they tend to fade faster, if you like to change your rooms often, you can be less concerned with fading. Neutral colours, are less likely to fade and more likely to blend into a room's decor. Linen, silk, faux silk, and velvet are best choices to use for window treatments since they tend to hang the best, Faux silk tends to be the most durable, and in a particularly sunny room, faux silk doesn't deteriorate as quickly as real silk. Some fabrics can help keep out the cold. Many hotels use suede, velvet, tapestry, or tweed since their weight helps block light and keep heat in. Still, nearly any fabric can be interlined—a piece of fabric slipped between the lining and the face fabric—can help prolong the life of the curtains. If silk is unlined, it will rot, lining and interlining are what give curtains their body and fullness. Laura Mac Sweeney, with hair styled by Sean Taaffe.

CUSTOM VS OFF THE SHELF PICTURE: PAWEL NOWAK

Custom curtains offer many benefits: You can customise the dimensions to your window size and create a tailored look, like a perfectly fitted suit. Custom come in endless design options, from material to header style. With these options though,

comes a considerable price difference from off-theshelf curtains. Personalising off the shelf curtains is also an option adding a panel inn a different colour at the end is a very good cost effective way to get made to measure from off the shelf. As any decorator will tell you, curtains make a room—but only when chosen correctly. When it comes to window treatments, it's a matter of colour and fabric, length and lining, and custom-made versus off-the-shelf. With so many decisions, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, so here’s some advice on narrowing down the options and selecting the right curtains for your home.

LENGTH AND WIDTH

Before you take out the tape measure, decide how high above the window you'd like the curtains to begin. Keep in mind: Hanging panels higher than

Glycolic Peel Facial

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on the benefits of the glycolic peel facial

GLYCOLIC acid is from the family of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA). Alpha hydroxy acids are derived from a number of sources and have been in use for centuries. Other AHAs are lactic acid derived from sour milk, citric acid from fruit and tartaric acid from grapes. Cleopatra bathed in sour milk to soften her skin, and women from the French courts used to rub wine into their faces to improve the condition of their skin. An amazing deep exfoliating facial, the glycolic peel facial is ideal for pre anti- wrinkle injections or filler treatments. It is also ideal if you haven’t had a facial in a while. It starts off with a double cleanse to remove impurities, make -up and environmental influences and is followed by

application of 40% glycolic acid. This is the highest strength which we are allowed use on the skin and it gives removes fine lines, dehydration lines, blackheads and up to 10 layers of dead cells. We then apply hyaluronic acid for deep hydration from your dermal layer of skin, followed by a serum-like substance. A head, neck and shoulder massage will then relax you and the facial is finished with application of eye cream, décolleté youth serum, anti ageing serum and cream. We are giving a free facial when you buy three of these glycolic peel facials. For more information or to book a facial call 064-6632966

RECIPE OF THE WEEK THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN By Jack Cronin

BASED on the thrilling novel by Paula Hawkins, The Girl On The Train has swapped hardback for big screen action. The movie, directed by Tate Taylor, tells the tale of a 30-something-year old alcoholic, struggling to come to terms with the fact that her ex-husband has moved on. Rachel Watson travels by train every day to inner city New York. On her journey every day she passes the same neighbourhoods. One of which holds a profound significance in her life. She scans two houses in particular, trying to catch a glimpse of the people inside. Housewife Anna Boyd, or known to Rachel as The Other Woman, is now married to Rachel’s ex Tom Watson and has had a baby after their affair. Rubbing more salt into the wounds of Tom’s ex lover, they’ve decided to stay in the same house that Rachel and Tom once lived in. One of the houses she passes every day.Megan Hipwell and her hubby Scott, are neighbours of Tom and Anna, Megan even babysits their child. Rachel is fascinated with the couple that she sees every day as she stares out of the train, believing that they are the perfect pair. But all is not as it seems. One day, Rachel becomes infuriated as she sees something shocking at Hipwell’s home. This causes a drunken Rachel to scramble off the train and look for Megan, only to blackout and awaken hours later in her apartment. Friend and apartment sharer Cathy, who finds out surprising information about Rachel, threatens to kick her out if she doesn’t get her act together. The next day Rachel hears tragic news which leaves her horrified and kicks off the mystery in the plot. Starring Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux, Rebecca Ferguson, Laura Prepon and Haley Bennett, this nail-biting spine-chiller will leave you with mixed emotions as the twists and turns increase and become more intense. Fantastic and highly recommended film.

Grace Notes TALKING ABOUT INSPIRATION

From a very young age we are inspired, whether we realise it or not, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

WE CAN be inspired by people, places and experiences. I recently attended a retreat day with the Risen folk group and we were asked, “Who inspired you to be involved in music?”. “Who made you think that you would like to do what they do?” My answer was the late Aine Nic Ghabhann. Aine inspired without trying. She had a no nonsense approach to teaching, and to life, and she made her students feel that there was no question as to whether we would reach our goals. She inspired me to always try to find the fun in a performance and this is something that I try to instil in my own students today. Therefore, inspiration breathes inspiration! After the retreat day I found myself drawn repeatedly back to the question, “Who inspires me?” Having mulled it over again I realise that I have been surrounded by inspirational people my whole life.

My parents have never been pushy, and certainly are not 'Show Parents', but they have always stood by me and have genuinely always wanted the best for me. The people from your early childhood are the people who know the essence of you. These people saw the twinkle in my eye as I put on numerous sitting room concerts and wrote several plays, (which unfortunately never made it to the stage!). They knew me when I sang for absolutely no reason, I just sang. These special people are the roots from which we grow. I always tell my Dad he started it all as he told my Mom, “I think herself can sing”, after he had heard me singing “Colours of the Wind” in the back of the car. The back of the car was my favourite place to sing. I was in my own world and loved to sing my favourite songs as I watched the world rush by. As an adult I now want to go back to that place. I want to return to my roots. I must ask my dad for a drive... •Grace’s email is gracefoley.ie

MUSIC AND MOSAIC WEEKEND

HERE’S a great opportunity for art and music lovers – you can create some new work with the help of three dedicated original artists, Nathalie El Baba (visual art), Caz Jeffreys (voice) and Ruti Lachs (music). A weekend workshop is planned for Killarney on Saturday, November 12, and Sunday, November 13. The workshop, for adults aged 18 and over, takes place on the premises of the Killarney School of Music, where three rooms will be available for a weekend of creativity. “This is a mixed art form project. Participants will be creating mosaic art in response to music, and making music (vocal and/or instrumental) in response to art,” said Ruti. “There will be a lot of group work, and every individual will have a chance to shine. No previous experience is needed. The weekend will be fun, informal, and unique.” Book now to ensure your place. For further information, email rutilachs@gmail.com, or call Ruti on 087660 6118.

SPOTLIGHT ON YOUNG MUSICIANS AND SINGERS

LAST Saturday was a tuneful one for young musicians and singers from across the Diocese of Kerry as it hosted a successful workshop for young church performers. Parishes from all corners of the diocese were represented at St. Brendan’s College (the Sem) in Killarney for various music and singing workshops. The musicians’ workshop was presented by Áine Murray, a Kerry-based performer, composer, arranger, lecturer and teacher. The singers’ workshop was facilitated by Dominic Finn. Dominic is a post-primary teacher of music and director of music at Cobh Cathedral. The purpose of this Youth Music Ministry Workshop was to provide youth friendly music for choirs and folk groups, according to diocesan spokeswoman Mary Fagan. “ The workshop also facilitated the learning of new liturgical music that is appropriate and appealing to young people,” said Mary. “The participants were presented with a booklet of music containing hymns, psalms and spiritual songs for various seasons of the liturgical year.” The workshop forms part of a comprehensive approach to Youth Ministry initiated by the Diocese of Kerry. It was coordinated by the Diocesan Pastoral Team in collaboration with parishes and parish liturgical musicians. A youth music ministry network was formed in summer 2016 to respond to the needs of youth choirs and folk groups throughout the diocese. “This group will continue to work together in resourcing and helping youth music groups,” added Mary. At World Youth Day in Rio di Janeiro, Pope Francis referred to the young people of our Church. He noted: “The Church needs you, your enthusiasm, your creativity.” .

The Provocateur ‘GRIDLOCK IS THE STUFF OF HALLOWEEN HORRORS’ WE’RE all familiar with those Halloween horror movies – and indeed nightmares – where the protagonist’s every attempt to escape from an axe murderer/monster is thwarted. No matter where in the house or building one roams, the exit is blocked. Well, that’s how I felt on Sunday – and indeed any time a few extra cars in town chokes our metropolis to the gills. Seriously, the autumn colours do not sit well with what is in effect July traffic, jamming up the Mission Road, Muckross Road, Lewis Road and the bypass. Our town should be able to handle more than a handful of cars by now. Two journeys that normally take ten minutes apiece took 45 each on Sunday. Granted there were extra cars in town and of course match traffic (and we are always delighted to welcome visitors to the town), but surely there is some way Killarney’s streets and approach routes can be better designed to handle the inevitable extra road users? Sometimes you might take a sneaky peek from the Ballydowney roundabout and see the tail of traffic going from the Hans Liebherr Road and think you are ahead of the game by concluding you’ll escape traffic gridlock by swinging down Port Road and choosing the Mission Road option. But you will always be foiled as your heart sinks and you join the queue of frustrated motorists snailing back as far as the entrance to Knockreer. You watch as cars ahead of you do U-turns wherever possible in a frantic effort to escape and you wonder, maybe that might work for me. But often it doesn’t. Your mind whirs through the possible escape routes (like that protagonist in the Halloween horror) but you then realise that a plan to go through the town centre and trying to escape via Lewis Road will be unlikely to succeed as that route is invariably choked up too when traffic gets like this.

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + CRÉ NA CILLE, ARÍS Ashes of cremated Catholics can no longer be kept at home, scattered, or divided among family members, the Vatican has ruled. The new instruction, handed down from the top of the Catholic Church, said ashes must instead be kept in “sacred places” such as cemeteries. It also stressed that it preferred burial to cremation, saying it was the most “fitting way to express faith”. The Vatican has permitted cremation since 1963 but has always frowned on the practice. “It is not permitted to scatter the ashes of the faithful departed in the air, on land, at sea or in some other way, nor may they be preserved in mementos, pieces of jewellery or other objects,” the instruction said. The ruling came from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), a Vatican department, which warned practices “contrary to the Church’s

faith” that had become “widespread”. Speaking at a Vatican news conference, German Cardinal Gerhard Müller, Prefect of the department said that in recent decades there had been a huge increase in the practice of cremation rather than burial, and in the “domestic” conservation of the ashes of the deceased. “We come from the earth and we shall return to the earth,” Cardinal Müller said, re-affirming the church’s preference for burials. “The church continues to incessantly recommend that the bodies of the dead be buried either in cemeteries or in other sacred ground. “In memory of the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord, burial is the most appropriate way to express our faith and hope in bodily resurrection,” he said. Yet Cardinal Müller said cremation would not be banned. Pope Francis had already approved the guidelines, the Vatican said.

HITTING THE HEADLINES AT HOME

Schools close as teachers hit the picket lines SCHOOLS across Kerry and Ireland closed yesterday (Thursday), for the first of seven days of stoppages as secondary teachers took part in a one-day strike. And there will be a withdrawal of supervision and substitution duties to follow when schools return in early November. Talks have been taking place this week between leaders of the Association of

Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) and senior officials in the Department of Education. About 500 schools are affected, with up to 250,000 teenagers unable to go to school. Schools will reopen for the day on Friday, and then close for the weeklong Halloween break – and the main concern now is what will happen after that.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD TIME TO THINK IT OUT AGAIN? It seems Brexit is very far from being a ‘done deal.’ Despite a turnout of 72% in the Brexit referendum, the Leave campaign was supported by 51.9% of those who voted a very narrow margin indeed. There is widespread belief that if the referendum were to be run again the result would be very different. While freedom of movement of people is a core EU principle, immigration was the chief concern of those who voted to leave. Some are of the opinion that Britain is actually full, while others suggest immigration is necessary but not free movement of people. That, they believe is a step too far. It now transpires the referendum is not binding constitutionally and many people believe that a very tight referendum does not send a clear signal for fundamental change. The UK Parliament is sovereign and thus even a very clear Brexit referendum cannot bind it legally. So Parliament, and, with added emphasis, a new parliament elected in a new general election, could decide to ignore the referendum. Politically, however, it would be very difficult to completely ignore the referendum. Leave campaigners cleverly pulled the wool over the UK electorate’s eyes when they claimed “Our trade relations with the rest of the world remain unchanged” (Lord Lawson, 29 February 2016). This is, of course, utterly untrue. They claimed that membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and “continuing” trade agreements would protect the postBrexit UK. However, the terms of the UK’s membership in the WTO, and all other “mixed” trade agreements (trade treaties concluded by both the EU and its member states) could be in jeopardy if the UK tries to exit without first securing a successful transitional agreement with the European Union. UKIP famously promised that by leaving the EU an extra £350 million a week would be available for investment in the NHS. Post-referendum this was deemed a ‘mistake.’ And, of course, the fall in sterling

has hit hard not just in the pocket but in national pride. Now, Downing Street has indicated for the first time that parliament has the right to reject the final Brexit deal, raising the possibility that Britain’s EU exit could yet be halted. Downing Street agreed it is “very likely” that MPs and peers will be given a vote once the withdrawal negotiations are finished, after the issue arose in the High Court. The statement, after the Prime Minister repeatedly refused to give ground on demands for Parliament to have a say on Brexit, immediately triggered furious debate about the possible consequences. One senior pro-EU Conservative MP called it a “victory for all those who believe in the right of Parliament to represents the interests of our constituents”. And the prospect of Parliament exerting some control over the final settlement caused the pound to surge immediately against the dollar in exchange markets. The development came on the third day of the legal challenge against the Government’s separate refusal to give Parliament a vote before Article 50 is invoked. James Eadie QC told the High Court that Parliament would have to ratify any package hammered out with Brussels – prompting Theresa May’s spokeswoman to say it was an “accurate reflection” of the Government’s interpretation of the law. It raised the prospect, at the very least, that MPs and peers could amend the Brexit deal if they opposed key elements of the impact on trade, immigration or other areas. However, it could also mean Britain tumbling out of the EU, probably in early 2019, with no deal whatsoever. The Government has insisted it would not be possible to slam the brakes on EU withdrawal after the two-year Article 50 notice is triggered, early next year. But some leading lawyers have argued there is nothing in Article 50 to prevent the UK withdrawing its declaration that it intends to leave the EU, if it chose to do so.

Danny Healy-Rae has his say on ozone layer KERRY INDEPENDENT TD Danny Healy-Rae, who has been vocal about his rejection of manmade climate change, yesterday objected to the government’s bill which seeks to ratify Ireland’s participation in the Paris Agreement. He said people have been told “untruths” about climate change in the past. “My own views on climate change have already been well known,” he said. “There was changes in the climate way back when there was no industrialisation and when there was way less animals on farms and no intensification of farming in the centuries gone by. “Yet we had intense heat, long periods of very cold, wet weather which culminated in many lives being lost in the famine in the 1740s, caused by two years of incessant rain and extremely cold winters. El Nino and the Gulf Stream played a significant part in climate change going back the centuries. There have been a lot untruths bandied about going back for many years.’’ Deputy Healy-Rae added: “They told us about the ozone layer and there was greenhouse gases from cans of hairspray or whatever but they never told us that it was nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean 50 years ago actually caused the serious damage to the ozone layer. Thankfully it is mending and it is curing and it is not anything to do with policies in any country in recent times.” Referring to the Paris Agreement, he added: “I’m very worried about this agreement because it will have a severe negative effect on farmers and farmers must be protected.”

Open night at Killarney Community College is a class act SCIENCE rooms bubbled with experiments, the corridors were filled with the sound of music and the mouth-watering aroma of freshly baked scones greeted parents and students as they entered Killarney Community College for its opening night last week. They got to explore the school at leisure, checking out its four brand-new modern light-filled classrooms. In addition, all the school’s bathrooms have been renovated. “Open night means that parents and children are free to walk around the school and sample the learning that is on offer,” said acting principal Stella Loughnane. Teachers were on hand to explain every aspect of their particular subject to students and parents alike who were well impressed with the creativity on show in the woodwork rooms as well as the performances in the music rooms. Ms Loughnane then addressed the 400-plus crowd, highlighting how

Killarney Community College is a very progressive school. “It is the only school in Killarney to have adopted one-hour classes which based on educational research is considered best practice,” said Ms Loughnane. “Killarney Community College provides students with a wide variety of optional subjects such as home economics, metalwork, woodwork, music, art and technical graphics as well as the traditional core subjects of Irish, English and maths.” The principal went on to explain how the school provides excellent learning opportunities and extra-curricular activities alike. “Killarney Community College has a house system which actively encourages students from all years to work and play together in an effort to win points for their house,” added Ms Loughnane. “The college is to the fore in implementing change having been a pilot school for the new Junior Cert.”

Garden Magic PLENTY TO DO IN THE ROOM OUTSIDE

Thinking of getting a few jobs done in the garden this long weekend? Debby Looney some tips

WE ARE nearing the end of October and nights are getting colder. Evenings are short, and luckily for us gardeners the jobs that need to be done can be done in the weekend! As a gardener my first love is planting plants…Two years ago I discovered a beautiful Mahonia. Now I have always been fond of the common Mahonia Japonica, but for a smaller garden, Japonica Soft Caress is a must – have! It is spineless, and so elegant with its feathery foliage. It has fragrant yellow flowers followed by blue berries. The flowers are great for attracting bees, as are heathers at this time of year. It is also worthwhile planting Colchicum Autumnale in the spring for a colourful display now. Bare-rooted trees and hedging can be bought and planted now. If you are planting trees make sure to stake them, as the roots will be damaged if the tree moves

too much in the wind. It is also a good idea to prune climbing and rambling roses now, before the winter storms damage them too much. Clear away dead leaves and use them as mulch, but don’t use rose leaves for this purpose as they harbour a lot of fungal diseases such as blackspot. If your garden is wet, it is advisable to lift Dahlias, Begonias and Gladioli. Take any dead leaves off and store in a dry place, or in dry sand. Now is also the time to cut back and divide your perennials. Apple trees and fruit trees benefit from a “winter wash” to kill off any bugs that are hibernating under the bark. Put glue bands around your apple trees to stop the female winter moth. The caterpillars will decimate the flower buds in the spring. All in all, there is still plenty to do outside – and on a rainy day you can disinfect your greenhouse!

Lantern Lodge KERRY TD Danny Healy-Rae and his son Councillor Johnny Healy-Rae met with the Health Service Executive last Friday morning to highlight services for people attending Lantern Lodge. They urged the HSE to provide the same services at the new facility at Leewood House which will be opening in coming weeks. “We have asked continuously that meals and shower facilities will be made available at Leewood House but to date the HSE have failed to agree to these requests, Lantern Lodge and the staff gave an excellent service to all the people who attending there back over the years and it is not acceptable if the same care and facilities will not be provided in Leewood House,” they stated.

Artists urged to make their mark in Killarney CALLING all artists – would you like your work to be seen by over a thousand people in just one evening in Killarney and be part of what has come to be regarded as one of the best nights out on the Kerry social calendar? Killarney Rotary Club’s Evening of Wine And Art in association with Daly’s SuperValu takes place on Thursday, November 24, in The Malton and it promises to be more exciting and prestigious than ever. “As an artist you will receive space to display your works and over the years the event has generated tens of thousands of euros for local charities,” said Killarney Rotary Club president Angela O’Connor. “To participate and be in with a chance of exhibiting and selling your work please contact us by sending an email to killarneyrotaryclub@ gmail.com.”

WRC GB this weekend

Ogier aims for fourth WRC manufacturers’ crown for Volkswagen HAVING claimed his fourth consecutive WRC world drivers' title, Sebastien Ogier is determined to lead Volkswagen Motorsport to a fourth straight manufacturers' crown this weekend at Wales Rally GB. Between Ogier and team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala the pair of Volkswagen Motorsport drivers need to claim a combined total of 34 points to secure the WRC manufacturers' title with a round to spare, regardless of what nearest rivals Hyundai achieves over the final two rounds in Wales and Australia. After winning the past three Wales Rally GB and being on a three round victory stretch, Ogier is full of confidence at an event he failed to score a single point at during his first five attempts.

Meeke feels running order may dictate Wales Rally GB result Kris Meeke says road and weather conditions at Wales Rally GB will play a pivotal role in the result with those first in the running order gaining the biggest advantage of the season. The Abu Dhabi Total WRT Citroen squad is set to make its final competitive outing of 2016 ahead of its return as a full factory effort next year at Wales Rally GB, with Meeke and Nagle confirmed for next season along with Waterford driver, Craig Breen. It will be exciting to see Ireland being represented at this level in the next generation WRC cars with the season opener in Monte Carlo from January 20 to 22. 28.10.16 Killarney Advertiser

CAR SHARING: THE FUTURE OF MOTORING HERE’S an important question: Would you rather share a car than own one? All over the world there is a rapidly accelerating trend towards car sharing - a system where motorists rent vehicles for short periods of time instead of actually owning them. Most of the world's major cities now operate such schemes, and they are working - especially in the very heavily populated areas where severe traffic congestion is changing attitudes about actually owning a vehicle. It's estimated there are now more than two million motorists involved in car sharing schemes around the world, and they are participating in an initiative that experts say can reduce car ownership by 15 vehicles for every shared vehicle. Research suggests that the average owned vehicle spends upwards of 95 per cent of its time not being used, whereas vehicles involved in car sharing are used at least 60 per cent of the time.

64

Killarney Advertiser 28.10.16

In the future, would you own a vehicle or share it? In fact the change is already happening on a rapidly increasing scale. Car-sharing initiatives such as Zipcar in the US, DriveNow in Europe, and Uber in many parts of the world are gaining traction – Uber is

now completing five million rides a day. Changing our perception of what a car means to us will be difficult. However cast your mind back twenty years when the ‘ludicrous’ ideal of downloading music was unveiled, hasn’t public perception changed. Now we can’t remem-

ber when or where we last bought a CD. A music store is now a nostalgic journey in the same way car ownership may become. For me I hope that never happens but it has its merits in being able to combat congestion.

Is your child’s car seat fitted correctly? SHOCKINGLY, statistics show that four out of five car seats are incorrectly fitted. Receiving correct advice and guidance is crucial and this week Killarney Gardaí have been joining forces with the Road Safety Authority’s “Check it Fits” service Motorists in Killarney this week got to avail of a top-class free service that will help them check that their children’s car seats are fitted correctly as a team of experts offered help at Deerpark Tesco (behind Tesco) to provide a free service for parents and guardians. “Following this information and awareness campaign by the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána, we will commence an enforcement operation between now and Christmas. This enforcement operation is specific to Killarney at the moment,” said Sergeant Dermot O’Connell of Killarney Gardaí. ”All children under 150cms, approximately 4 feet 10 inches in height, or 36kgs (79lbs) in weight must use a child restraint system (CRS) suitable for their height and weight while travelling in a car or goods vehicle (other than a taxi).” An example of a CRS would be a child car seat or booster cushion/booster seat. Rear-facing child car seats must not be used in passenger seats protected by an active frontal airbag. An airbag which deploys (opens up) in front of a rearward-facing child car seat can cause serious injury or even death if there is a collision. For more information on Check it Fits and for an up-to-date schedule of upcoming road shows, visit http://www.rsa.ie/checkitfits Ron Richardson, Check it Fits, and Garda Finbarr O'Donovan.

Michael Bernard O’Donoghue Oil Boiler Servicing, based in Gortdromakerrie, Muckross, Killarney, is a real one-stop shop when it comes to oil boiler fitting, repairs and services, as well as all plumbing and heating requirements. Of course a read-out of your boiler system will go a long way to ensure it is working as efficiently as possible and Michael Bernard will present you with a printout once the readout is complete. This should of course be done once a year. You can contact Michael Bernard O’Donoghue on 0879808517.

Thanks also to those who sent Mass cards, flowers and messages of support and those who travelled long distances. We are especially grateful to our relatives, friends and neighbours who helped in so many ways at the time. We offer our special thanks to Fr. Tom Looney and Fr. Micheál O’Doherty who officiated at the funeral Mass and burial. Thanks to Helen Kerins and Denis Crowley for their music and singing at the funeral Mass. We would like to acknowledge and offer our sincere thanks to her excellent carers, to the staff of Ashborough Lodge, Milltown, Deenagh Medical Practice and home helps who looked after Bridie. We value greatly the kindness and understanding shown by O’Shea’s Funeral Home. To everyone who helped us over those sad days and over the past year, we say thank you. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Please accept this as a token of our grateful appreciation as we could not respond to everyone individually. ‘We won’t forget the face we loved, Or the memory of your smile, Or the countless things you did for us, That made our life worthwhile’ First Anniversary Mass on Monday, 31st October, 2016 at 7.30pm in Fossa Church.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. C.D.

Athletic and Celtic advance in FAI Junior Cup Killarney sides are looking good in Ireland’s top tournament, writes Adam Moynihan

I

T WAS another good weekend for both of Killarney’s premier teams as Athletic and Celtic secured their passage to the fourth round of the FAI Junior Cup. With ten teams remaining in the Kerry, Clare and Desmond League section, they’re now just one game away from the last sixty-four and an open draw. There are some strong teams in the hat but confidence shouldn’t be an issue; it has been a very positive start to the season for both camps. Following a really poor campaign in 2015/16, things are looking a bit better this time around for Athletic. We’ve won our opening three

league games under Stuart Templeman and find ourselves top of league with nine points. To put that into perspective, it took us sixteen games to reach the ninepoint mark last season. Sunday’s 5-0 victory over Coole of the Clare District League was our sixth win in seven games in all competitions, a poor performance away to Dynamos in the Munster Junior Cup the only negative so far. Although Coole weren’t the strongest opposition it was still a solid display, Łukasz Polak, Mike Stam O’Donoghue, Darren Mulcahy and Will Courtney all on the scoresheet. I scored too but I don’t want to go on about it.

Celtic managed to negotiate a potentially tricky tie against Mitchel’s Avenue of Tralee, and by all accounts the 1-0 scoreline wasn’t an accurate reflection of the match. Wayne Sparling got the game’s only goal but the Celts dominated proceedings and could have won by much more. Their first season under manager Brian Spillane has gone more or less to plan, a 0-0 draw with Castleisland the only minor hiccup to date. They’ve been boosted by the return of some Legion players but Podge O’Connor, who is moving to the States, will be a big loss. Nevertheless they have a very strong-looking team and they’re sure to be in the mix come the business end of the season.

Celtic and Athletic are two of four Kerry teams still involved in the tournament, Listowel and Dingle the others. They’ll be joined in the pot by Newmarket Celtic, Bridge United and Avenue United of Clare and Carrig Celtic, Ballingarry and Abbeyfeale of the Desmond League. It would be nice for the Killarney clubs to avoid each other in this round as I’m sure both sets of players would enjoy a trip up the country in round five. Newmarket Celtic, who dismantled Castleisland last weekend, Avenue, who beat Dynamos, and Abbeyfeale would all be very difficult opponents but there’s no easy draw as such and it will take a big effort to secure a spot in the last sixty-four either way. But, on form, both Athletic and Celtic have every reason to be hopeful of a good run in the competition.

Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy FIRST off, Happy Halloween to all the rugby supporters out there. The past 2 weeks have been very tough for Munster and Ireland Rugby fans as we ultimately tried to come to terms with the death of Anthony Foley. It was truly amazing to see the tributes pouring in from right across the rugby world for Axel. Tributes from the likes of Dan Carter and Brian O’Driscoll as well as clubs like Clermont and Scarlets marking the life of Axel in their own special way, really and truly brought the term "rugby family" to life. Munster themselves hosted Glasgow Warriors in a highly emotional European Cup encounter at Thomond Park, a match played in tribute to Axel.

It was heartbreaking to watch the player’s line up for the minutes silence; however they played like the Munster of old and beat Glasgow on a scoreline of 38 points to 17. A red card for Keith Earls was the only negative on a day that will live on in Munster folklore as we paid tribute to our fallen Chieftain. Saturday at Thomond Park live long in the memory along with the likes of Munster V All Blacks in 1978 and the Heineken Cup final in 2006. This weekend we will hold a flag day around town as we raise vital funds for the club. So if you see someone in a Killarney RFC top shaking a bucket on Saturday, please give any spare change you can. We are hosting an 80s V 90s

night in aid of the club at the Killarney Grand Hotel on Friday, November 18. It will be a great night and there will be a reduced entry price for those in fancy dress! So, dust off the leg warmers and Denim jackets and come along to what will be a great night for all! Finally, our minis travel to Listowel on Saturday to take part in the first round of the West Munster Minis Blitzes, where teams at U8, U10, U11 and U12 will play matches against teams from Listowel, Castleisland and Iveragh. Best of luck to all!

THE HEART AND SOUL OF KERRY FOOTBALL Eamonn Fitzgerald notes that Weeshie Fogarty’s new book is recommended reading for anyone interested in the Kerry football story KERRY continue to lead the way winning All Ireland football titles more so than any other county and this prompted Weeshie Fogarty to ask the reasons for this supremacy. The Heart and Soul of Kerry Football opens up this whole topic for discussion. This is the Killarney man’s third book and is published by O’Brien Press. He has already published a book on Dr Eamonn and My Beautiful Obsession where he chased the Kerry dream. He interviews a cross-section of football stars and traces the fortunes through good times and bad times. Were there bad times? Not many but he delves in to see how Kerry were beaten by Waterford, yes Waterford in the 1957 Munster Championship. Tradition unlocks the key to Kerry’s successes. “What other county can boast such a tradition. Kerry must never forget. If you forget your past you have no present and if you have no present you have no future,” he says in the preface. Football and its heroes have shaped the way we approach life in Kerry. He quotes the evocative lines from The Secret of Kerry written by Valentia man Joseph G. Smyth. “Then he’ll hark to the thud of a football and things more important must yield, For nothing must stay in a Kerry lad’s way when the ball bounces high on the field.” Therein lays the magic, mystery and the irresistible spirit of football in Kerry. The author admits that it is impossible to encapsulate in print, “the true meaning, spirit, uniqueness and secret of Kerry football”. He takes us back to 1953 when Kerry beat Armagh in the All-Ireland final, having gone through a very lean period back to 1946. Weeshie was a young garsún in ‘The Mon’ when in come Jackie Lyne, the unrelated Tadhgie Lyne and Donie Murphy with the Sam Maguire, three heroes in that win over Armagh. The pupils got the mandatory half day and lessons off that night, but more lasting than all of that, “like every boy that day, I was captivated, consumed, smitten. The seeds had been set, and a lifetime of total involvement and commitment had begun,” writes Weeshie.

TRADITION Tradition, tradition and more tradition. Each boy dreamed that someday he too would emulate the heroes and would prosper in Croke Park. Taking the winning cup around to the schools on the day after a final is still as strong a ritual as ever. The custom continues. As recently as two weeks ago the winning Croke players carried the Bishop Moynihan Cup around the schools, right back in to the Mon and other schools in the area. It is the dream of every Kerry garsún to wear the revered green and gold of Kerry some day and hopefully the Artane band will lead him out in front of 82,000 spectators. Tread softly because you tread on my dreams. I loved the chapter on ‘First football and the huge effort the boys made to scramble a fiver to buy the coveted ball from Dan O’Keeffe below in Mulcahy’s shop. LUNACY John B Keane says that in the run-up to the All-Ireland final “lunacy comes over Kerry people. Young and old, men and women lose all sense of themselves. It’s football for breakfast, dinner and supper and everyone becomes an expert on the game “ Jimmy Deenihan goes further saying that “ Kerry football is recognised as an art form as much

as a sport. Interestingly, Dr Eamonn published his own book in 1956 entitled The Art and Science of Gaelic Football. Weeshie also points out that Kerry players are never allowed to get too big for their boots no matter how successful they are or how many All=Ireland medals they have won: “Their accessibility is yet another reason why the younger generations strive to follow in their footsteps.” Around Killarney getting on with the normality of life away from the heroic deeds in Croke Park, bringing home the laurels you see Gooch, Donie O’Sullivan, Tom Long and a host of other stars. Their greatness is there for all to see. Think what it is like for the Irish diaspora. Connie Kelly does the collection during Mass in Boston wearing the green and gold geansaí. Killarney, Tralee and Caherciveen will produce the townie nippy forwards, while teak-strong backs and majestic midfielders will come from the rural parts of Kerry. Another ingredient central to Kerry success being maintained is that former stars come back to train, coach and inspire the new crop of budding stars, He does offer a warning on slippage in this respect. “While I might be in a minority of one on this, I firmly believe that the traditions I speak of are already being allowed to slip back into the mists of time, where they will be lost forever.” That’s the author’s view. I don’t agree with him on this one. CLASSY 15 Team selections are always contentious and we can be sure that if anyone of us picked our best Kerry 15 since 1953 it would not meet with universal approval. Weeshie is very specific on his 15. He does not say that each of his 15 was the best player for that position. He calls it as his all time (1953 -2016), most skilful, classy and stylish Kerry 15. His selection is Johnny Culloty in goal ahead of Danno Keeffe and Charlie Nelligan and a full back line of Seamus Murphy, Johnno Keeffe and Paudie Lynch. No room for Marc O Se in the full-back line so he goes in at wing back ahead of brother Tomás. Sean Murphy is on the other wing with Séamus Moynihan at number six. Midfield has to have Mick O’Connell, but who will partner him?, surely Jack O'Shea . He goes for Seanie Walshe, even

though the book’s cover shows Jacko in pursuit of the ball. Centre forward is Pat Griffin flanked by Eamonn O’Donoghue and Tadhgie Lyne. No room for Pat Spillane or Ger Power. Full forward is Maurice Fitzgerald and in the corners are Mikey Sheehy and Gooch. There is some class in that full forward line. STRIKE Training did not always go smoothly in Kerry and you had a players’ strike in the run up to the 1960 All Ireland when the Dublin based Kerry players went on strike in support of Dr Eamonn. He was the team trainer/manager but was not taken on the overseas trips. The Doc resigned and the strike limped on before it was eventually settled. Good to see the women’s contribution to the GAA in Kerry is well admired, the jersey washers, the players and the administrators. These include Bernie Reen, Maureen O’Shea, Bríd McElligott Rusk and a host of Kerry ladies players who won so many All-Irelands. REFEREE Weeshie was an outstanding referee for 15 years but it is hardly mentioned in this book. It would have been very interesting hearing of his exploits and controversies in charge of so many top games during that period. The Heart and Soul of Kerry football is recommended reading for anyone interested in the Kerry football story. The hardback runs to 230 pages and is laced with some great photographs. My favourite is the one taken by Kevin Coleman when he captured Seán Walshe’s mighty leap over Dublin’s star Brian Mullins. DR CROKES Newly crowned Kerry SFC winners Dr Crokes are away to Clare champions Kilmurray-Ibrickane in the first round of the Munster Club Championship this Sunday, October 30. ANTHONY FOLEY RIP His many fans bid an emotional farewell to Anthony Foley at Thomond Park on Saturday last, a fitting tribute to a man who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 42.

Kerry Community Games

combine Sean Daly words “Do your best – do your almighty best!” and our own “enjoy and have fun!”

Our special guest of honour on the night was Senator Mark Daly, Kenmare. Sean Daly of Kenmare awarded the Paud O’Leary Memorial Trophy (our 2016 Volunteer Award) by Owen O’Leary for his contribution to Kerry Community Games over the years. Sean’s son, Mark, received the Trophy on his behalf. He stated that it was a great honour for his father to receive this Trophy having being involved in Community Games for so long training teams and having competed in Athletics for St Johns Athletic Club in Tralee. Sean had also won the Bishop Moynihan Trophy given to best overall athlete in Kerry for 10 years and is delighted that all his grandchildren are following in his footsteps and competing in Community Games. RESULTS: F.A.I JUNIOR CUP KILLARNEY ATHLETIC 5-0 COOLE F.C. Goals Adam Moynihan, Lukas and Mike ‘Stam’ O Donoghue gave us a 3-0 halftime lead while further goals from Darren Mulcahy and William Courtney in the 2nd half helped us run out comfortable winners against a competitive Clare side. Well done lads. U17 KILLARNEY ATHLETIC 4-3 KILLORGLIN Athletic got their first points of the season with a hard earned victory over well organised Killorglin outfit . One all at halftime . The second half saw a lot more goals with Athletic coming out on top of a second half goal fest , with each member of the squad playing their part . U15 The U15 team went West to Dingle and came away with nothing. Overall a poor performance on the day despite being 2-2 at half time. U13 KILLARNEY ATHLETIC 1-2 TRALEE DYNAMOS In our first game of the year we got off to the worst possible start giving

Declan McCarthy becomes the 79th Captain of the Club at Mahony’s Point. At the Men’s Club AGM on Friday the 21st of October Declan McCarthy became the 79th Captain of the Club since the Club moved from Deerpark to the new course location at Mahony’s Point in 1939. Outgoing Captain Liam Hartnett in his farewell speech, thanked everyone who was involved in assisting him and the Club in making his year of Captaincy the success that it has been, the Club is certain-

ly in a much better place as a result and the future certainly looks much brighter. We all thank you Liam for a fantastic year. Declan in his acceptance speech paid tribute to Liam and his team, and to the Management Council of the Club, and all of the Club Staff for the way that the Club has progressed over recent years. Declan who joined the Club in 1986, outlined his personal experiences since becoming a member, and paid tribute in particular to James O’Neill who introduced him to the game, and to recently deceased and former Club Captain, Tommy Doran. Declan then outlined what he hopes to see achieved over the coming year, and in particular the continued progress of the Junior section of the Club, our future depends on them, he said, and it will be one of his priorities to nurture the Junior section which Declan is very passionate about assisting. Declan went on to say that a highlight for 2017 would be to see one, or more of our Club Team’s bring Provincial and National honours to the Club once more, and restore our Club to the list of winners of such titles. Declan continued by thanking his Men’s Club Committee for the way that they have been shown their willingness to put their collective “shoulder to the wheel” so to speak for 2017, towards helping us all have a Club that we will all feel justifiably proud of, and Declan finished off by wishing the incoming Lady Captain, Amy Arthur and incoming Club President, Breda Duggan every success for the coming year. We wish Declan every success for the coming year, and we will assist him towards achieving his goals which have been outlined above. On Friday the 21st outgoing Club Captain Liam Hartnett won his first competition of the year when he was playing in the “Captain’s Challenge” competition which was played for by Members of The Men’s Committee, The Club Council, some of the Club Teams Management and some further invitees. Liam hand picked his fellow team members, and his team was comprised of Club Secretary/Manager Cormac Flannery, Club Course Manager, Enda Murphy, and Mark Bradley, a visiting Professional golfer from the U.S. Mark is the father of Keegan Bradley who is a former Ryder Cup competitor, and also a former winner of the U.S. PGA Championship in 2011. No wonder Liam was in the winners enclosure, when he was supported by such talent. Sunday the 23rd of October competition was a Club sponsored singles stableford played on Killeen, it was played in very trying conditions, and the scoring reflected those conditions. Results were as follows: 1st Jim Sheehan (16) 36 points 2nd Brian Looney (5) 35 points 3rd Conor Healy (9) 34 points 4th John Lynch (11) 34 points 5th Eugene O’Sullivan (4) 34 points Category 1 Mark Tuite (5) 33 points Category 2 John M. son took place at Fossa community pitch at 12:00 on Saturday the 22nd of October 2016. The conditions were perfect and now with the added bonus of having dressing rooms at our new home ground. Before the start of the match, a minutes silence was observed by everyone to respect and honour the sad loss of Anthony Foley. A true Irish and Munster sporting hero. A valiant effort in the last 10 minutes was rebelled by Fenit who ran out deserving 4-2 winners. Great credit to both teams for serving up a great game. The development of our squad is clear to see and with a bit more composure in front of goal we felt we could have gotten more from the match. We would finally like to thank Fenit Samphires for a great game that was a joy to watch and also our match referee for the day. MEK United FC would like to take this opportunity to publically thank Kerry County Council for their financial support, through the Community Support Fund 2016, in assisting the club to purchase a set of full size goalposts. This contribution of €1,000 through the CSF was vital in purchasing this equipment. MEK United FC are looking forward to the coming season with our new purchase. The MEK United U12’s are home to Camp Juniors, this Saturday the 29th of October, Kick off @ 12 noon.

Killarney Celtic

CONDOLENCES Everyone at Killarney Celtic sends condolences to Joe and all the McCarthy family on the sad passing of his mother Carmel. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. CONGRATULATIONS Well done to the East Kerry minors, especially the many Celtic players involved, on winning the County Minor Championship. GIRLS TRAINING There will be no girls training on next Monday night, October 31st. Training will resume as normal the following Monday. RESULTS FAI JUNIOR CUP: KILLARNEY CELTIC 1 MITCHELS AVENUE 0 Celtic had to be at their best here in a very tough, well-contested game, with Wayne Sparling making the vital breakthrough. DENNY PREMIER B: KILLARNEY CELTIC 2 CAMP UNITED 4 Celtic, with some young players on board, battled hard but struggled to contain a veteran-packed and sharp Camp side. The visitors made the breakthrough thanks to Johnny Driscoll and added a penalty through

Genie Farrell to make it 2-0 at the break. They doubled their advantage through Gearoid O’Shea and Vincent Herlihy but the introduction of player/ manager Vladimir Sirotiak really energised Celtic, with Derek Twomey, Conor Keane, Farouk Aminu, and the Sheahans Denis and Cathal really taking the game to the visitors and Vlad cracking home two superb goals. U15 PREMIER: KILLARNEY CELTIC 2 TRALEE DYNAMOS 2 Niall McGillicuddy put Celtic up but Dynamos equalised and then took the lead, only for Jack O’Connor to hit a dramatic equaliser in injury time. Both teams deserved something from a superb game. U15 DIVISION TWO: INTER KENMARE 2 KILLARNEY CELTIC B 6 The turning point came when a blistering Celtic already led 2-0. Kenmare were awarded a penalty but a fantastic save saw the ball swiftly travel down the pitch to end up in the opposite net, a two goal swing effectively, and Celtic never looked back after that. Legion

U-16 EAST KERRY DIVISION 1 FINAL Bright sunshine with a cool breeze greeted the large crowd at Fossa where the football certainly raised the autumn temperatures. When the final whistle blew the scoreline read 2-16 to 1-9 and Legion had given the bench a well-deserved run. Full marks to Donal Donoghue, Conor McNiece, John O’Leary and Mike Hanrahan with Noel Kelleher assisting. They had their troops in top order at the end of a long and busy year. EAST KERRY MINORS Huge congrats to Cian Gammell, Conor McCarthy, Mike Pierce and the unfortunately injured Peter McCarthy who all played a huge part in East Kerry’s minor County Championship win over Mid Kerry in Fitzgerald Stadium last Sunday. After a tight first quarter East Kerry took over to run out convincing winners. VOLUNTEERS With an ever-increasing playing population, the club is always anxious to ensure that every player is given the best possible coaching and education for the game. We are always thankful for the hard work and dedication of our members who volunteer to help out and assist with each team. As always we are looking for new people to become involved. The 2016 playing season is almost complete and has been both rewarding and busy. All this would not be possible without the input of our volunteers. With this in mind and looking ahead to 2017 we would like to invite anyone who would be interested in getting involved in any team at any level to let us know. “Many hands make light work”. A committee of four is now in place with the task of putting together for ratification by the Club Executive juvenile management teams for next year. Paddy Osborne, Barry Slattery, Seán Culloty and
