‘I WOULD LIKE TO SEE US LEAD THE WAY IN IRELAND WHEN IT COMES TO TOURISM FOR ALL’

Paul takes the helm at Killarney Chamber

DONNING his chain of office as new president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Paul O’Neill is looking forward to tackling his to-do list. Paul follows in the footsteps of outgoing Chamber president Kate O’Leary whose achievements during her tenure won her a standing ovation at the Chamber’s annual general meeting in December. Muckross native Paul, who works in property management with Park Place Apartments, has served as vice-president of the Chamber for the past two years. “During that time I aided Kate and was involved in several projects. It is a big advantage as I know what to expect and I know what’s involved," he said. Paying tribute to Kate’s work as president, Paul said he was very much looking forward to promoting Killarney and building on its strengths. The new Chamber leader’s priorities include making Killarney one of Ireland’s most accessible destinations, the Purple Flag, enhancing our festival offering, as well as the opening of Killarney House this year and the continuation of the Lough Lein looped walk project. Ensuring Killarney opens its doors as one of the most accessible destinations in Ireland is a key plan for Paul. “I would like to see us lead the way in Ireland when it comes to tourism for all, and ensure Killarney is accessible to people of all needs and abilities,” he told Killarney Advertiser. The Purple Flag is another project in Killarney that is close to Mr O’Neill’s heart. “Purple Flag is the international accreditation for town centres in the evening and at night from 5pm to 5am,” he said. Killarney has an enviable reputation for coordinating an exciting programme of festivals and events, including St Patrick’s Festival Chill Áirne and the July 4 celebrations. Paul aims to build on our strengths in this area over the next two years. “We will continue the high standards and also add to and enhance the festival and event offering,” he said.

Christmas in Killarney committee says thank you EACH year the Christmas n Killarney festival committee aims to make the programme of events even bigger and better than previous years. The past season saw this happen yet again, with the committee reporting hugely positive feedback from both the general public and businesses of the town. “We are thrilled,” said a spokesperson for the festival. “People from far and near travelled to Killarney throughout the month of December to soak up the Christmas atmosphere and enjoy the lights. The Magic Parades yet again drew huge crowds and plenty of excitement to the town each Saturday night once the festival kicked off on November 25. “Christmas in Killarney would like to take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors who supported the festival – it is this support that enables us to create such magical events and such a successful festival each year,” added the spokesperson. “We would also like to extend a huge thank all the volunteers who gave up their time. loungers and cocktails. However, despite our temperate climate, it would seem Killarney has more than most to offer those seeking a dream destination to spend their golden years. Claiming tenth spot in the prestigious list, Killarney’s proximity to the Ring of Kerry, its National Park and historic sites have proved a winning combination while Killarney’s restaurants and shops were also cited

as reasons for its inclusion on the list. But are we surprised? Over the past week Killarney welcomed an influx of delighted visitors to the town, which fast become a winter wonderland destination. Thanks to the Christmas in Killarney festival, Killarney is the perfect hot spot for a seasonal break and no longer does it have to wait until the warmer months to experience that lively

hum of activity. As the year drew to a close, the vibe was equal to that of the summer tourist season as our festive lights illuminated the excited and happy faces of the visitors of all ages pouring into town with their suitcases in tow. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

Winter wonderland attraction skates centre stage in Killarney Question How does the Housing Assistance Payment work?

Students from St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School who helped ensure young people with special needs enjoyed a fun day out at Killarney on Ice recently.

YOUNGSTERS and the young at heart have been getting their skates on over the past few weeks at Killarney on Ice, which will be in town until January 8. Located in the Beech Road car park, the winter wonderland attraction held a special complimentary morning for children from St Francis Special School and Cullina and Fossa national schools. Generous-spirited teenagers from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School and St Brendan’s College were also on hand to ensure the children enjoyed their outing. The 600 square metre ice rink under marquee is a key part of the Christmas in Killarney Festival. Schools, youth clubs and sports teams across the county are using the facility of the group booking discount rate to plan a session on the ice. The normal opening times can be extended during the day to accommodate school groups. Value for money is key, with family and group rates. Helmets and skate aids are available for novice skaters with double bladed skates to help young children. Sessions last for one hour and tickets can be booked online at www.killarneyonice.com. For further information and group or company bookings, please contact Killarney On Ice at 085-7400366.

Answer The Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) is a form of social housing support for people with a long-term housing need. It is administered by local authorities and will eventually replace long-term Rent Supplement. You must be on the local authority’s housing list (which means that you qualify for social housing support) to be eligible for HAP. HAP is being introduced in phases. From March 2017 the final phase will bring it fully into operation in the last three local authority areas – all in Dublin. Under the HAP scheme, you find your own private rented accommodation. Although the local authority administers HAP, you will not be a local authority tenant. The rental agreement will be between yourself and the landlord. This means that you will have certain rights and obligations, as will your landlord. The rent must be within the HAP rent limits, which are based on your household size and the rental market in your area. Additional flexibility is provided where a household cannot find suitable accommodation within the HAP rent limits. The Homeless HAP Pilot in Dublin offers further flexibility for homeless people. The local authority will pay your landlord directly and you will pay a differential rent to the local authority. This means that the amount of rent is based on your income and your ability to pay. If you are getting a social welfare payment at a post office, you must pay the local authority through the Household Budget Scheme. If you take up a job or increase your working hours, you will still be eligible for HAP, provided that you meet the other conditions of the scheme. People who are on the housing list and currently getting Rent Supplement will be transferred to HAP on a phased basis. If you are on the housing list, living in a HAP area and getting Rent Supplement, you can now apply for HAP. Detailed booklets and other information about HAP are available on housing.gov.ie. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

New appointment at Killarney accountancy company KILLARNEY accountancy company Curran Moore & Co has announced the appointment of new company director Donald O’Sullivan. Donald, who is re-joining the company, has a wealth of experience. “I am delighted to be re-joining Curran Moore & Co, having worked in Australia and Cork, with large companies,” he said. “It is an honour to be appointed as director.” Curran Moore & Co was established by Pat Curran in April 1970. Tim Moore joined the practice in 1977 to form the partnership Curran Moore & Co. It developed over the years and, following the sudden death of Tim Moore in November 2002 and the retirement of Pat Curran as a partner, the practice is now run by Michael Walker, Ian Holohan and now Donald O’Sullivan.

LOCALS and visitors alike will have become familiar over the past couple of weeks with the billboards highlighting a major event offering a thousand Kerry jobs. Fourteen of Kerry’s largest industries together with twelve sponsors such as Kerry County Council, IDA, Enterprise Ireland and Local Enterprise Office and organisations including the GAA and Kerry District League have all collaborated on the major road signage campaign highlighting Kerry Expo which takes place in the INEC on April 9. “The campaign sets out to encourage visitors and migrants to come live and work in Kerry,” said campaign and expo organiser Liz Maher. “It depicts the reality of that what lies behind the Kingdom’s magical scenery, is over 1000 job vacancies.” The campaign references some of Kerry’s major employers who are either currently recruiting or will be recruiting in in the near future. Some of these job vacancies will be showcased at the Kerry Expo. The campaign was perfectly placed to tempt those visiting Kerry over Christmas with many marking their calendar to return to the county for the event. Last year the Kerry Expo showcased 120 businesses throughout the county.

Credit union has e45 million to lend KILLARNEY CREDIT UNION has €45 million available to lend in 2017 and has in the past year provided €13.1 million in loans in the local community. These and many more figures emerged as Killarney Credit Union held its annual general meeting in December. The event, in The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney, heard how the credit union is now serving the needs of 25,000 members. Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union, said: “The assets at the credit union now stand at a very healthy €105 million. In the past year, we facilitated the people of Killarney and Kenmare with over 2,500 individual loans to a value of €13.1 million.” With the initial signs of economic recovery in the local economy, members’ confidence has seen a saving increase of 8% bringing total savings in the credit union to €91 million. Due to this increase, in July 2016, the Board of Killarney Credit Union took the hard decision to limit savings to €50,000 per member. This decision affected less than 1% of the membership of the credit. The credit union declared a dividend of .25% on shares held in the credit union. The credit union introduced a new IT system in

October which allows for greater functionality and this includes online banking and mobile apps for members. It also introduced a range of new loan products. “There is strong demand for the development of new products and services such as electronic payments, direct debits, debit cards, insurance cover and new loan rates. We are continually reviewing our product and service offering for members to meet their needs. Our home and business loan products are proving popular with members since their introduction this year,” added Mr Murphy. The credit union has been heavily involved in sponsorship of local clubs, societies and charities in the past 12 months with over 50 groups receiving €20,000 in sponsorship.

Killarney’s streetscape impresses in anti-litter league KILLARNEY has been deemed cleaner than European norms, according to a litter survey for 2016. The study, conducted by the business group Irish Business Against Litter, saw the town drop from sixth to 12th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities. The An Taisce report for Killarney stated: “Killarney was once again presented at its best in 2016. What was notable at many of the sites was the overall presentation of the streetscape – e.g. High Street/Main Street and New Road – all were in very good order. Park Road Commercial Park was noticeably improved on a previous

survey and Plunkett Street was excellent.” Seventy per cent of the towns and cities surveyed by An Taisce on behalf of IBAL were found to be clean to European norms, compared to 85% two years ago. Litter levels rose by 4% over the period. While once again there were no litter black spots, three urban areas were deemed to be seriously littered – Galvone in Limerick, Farranree in Cork and Dublin’s North Inner City. “The poor showing by our cities generally goes some way to explaining the overall increase in litter levels,“ said Conor Horgan of IBAL. “Last

SO WHAT DID THE JUDGES HAVE TO SAY ABOUT KILLARNEY? KILLARNEY was once again presented at its best in 2016, noted judges of the recent Irish Business Against Litter awards. What was notable at many of the sites was the overall presentation of the streetscape – High Street/Main Street and New Road – all were in very good order. Park Road Commercial Park was deemed “noticeably improved on a previous survey” and Plunkett Street was rated as excellent.

So what more did the judges have to say? Read on…. Countess Grove: Grade B – Much of this residential area was generally in good order but there was an area which definitely had a litter presence – plastic bottles, sweet papers and plastic bags. Dalton’s Avenue and Marian Terrace: Grade A – Cleary this is a very well respected and cared for residential area. The overall impression was of a very clean and well-maintained environment. High Street and Main Street: Grade A – A busy shopping environment which has scored very well, despite heavy usage. There was a virtual absence of litter throughout and the overall impression created here was a very positive one. Recycle Facility at High Street Car Park: Grade A – A well-presented recycle facility with all aspects of the area surveyed in very good order. New Road: Grade A – All was in very good order along this road – there was a virtual absence of litter throughout. The overall impression was of a well-maintained environment. Park Road Commercial Park: Grade A – The surveyor remarked that this area was much improved on IBAL Survey 1, 2016. As noted in previous survey the wire fencing was in poor order but there was no obvious litter. Plunkett Street: Grade A – This was an excellent site. All aspects of the area surveyed were in very good order and there was an absence of litter throughout. Aldi/Tesco – Deerpark: Grade A – Taken as one site, both Aldi and Tesco have scored very well. Clearly the whole area is very well managed with regard to litter and generally presentation. Tralee approach road: Grade B – There was a definite litter presence along the road on the approach into Killarney – coffee cups, plastic and glass bottles, cans, fast-food wrappers and sweet papers were all present. Some parts of the shrubbery/grass verges were better maintained than others. Killarney to Cork connecting road: Grade B – A moderately littered route. On the road out of Killarney it was noted that there was a very large anti-littering sign which is obscured by the overgrown trees/ bushes. There were other “anti-littering” notices along the route. Within the Kerry County Council area the road the top litter grade is certainly achievable.

year all our major cities other than Dublin were clean, this time round the majority are littered.” The IBAL report again illustrates how dumping is at the heart of Ireland’s litter problem. “The good news is that we are nowhere near as littered a nation as we were 15 years ago, when only two towns were Clean to European Norms. However, we have seen some worrying slippage across both cities and towns. The restructuring of local government and the abolition of town councils may be partly to blame outside of our cities,” said Mr Horgan.

Santa leads the way at jolliest Killarney Tidy Towns Meitheal ECHOES of "ho, ho, ho" could be heard throughout the town as Santa Claus and his team of elves swooped to make a clean sweep of Killarney's roundabouts in the lead-up to Christmas. Santa was taking time out from his super-busy schedule to give a helping hand to the Killarney Tidy Towns Meitheal group. “It has to have been our jolliest Meitheal ever!” Killarney Tidy Towns PRO Johnny McGuire told Killarney Advertiser. “Fifteen people, including Santa, took part in what was the first tidy towns Meitheal that was made up of Killarney Chamber members only – it was a case of Strictly Come Meitheal, I suppose!” Drivers and their young passengers, en route to a day’s festive shopping, were seen doing double takes as they encountered Santa hard at work. “We saw many cars circling the roundabouts more than once to be sure to get a good view of Santa busy at work," said Johnny. “In this way, Santa also helped highlight the importance of Tidy Towns to children who were on their way into town – it was a real sight to behold!” Neilie Griffin joined Santa Claus and the dedicated Volunteers of Killarney Meitheal and Tidy Towns at a clean-up at Park Road roundabout. Participants will be gathering for the Killarney walk, organised by the Park Run team, at the Muckross Traditional Farms, for a briefing at 9.20am and the 5k walk or run will commence at 9.30am. “January is a special time of year, which is infused with magic, loaded with new possibilities and ripe with potential pathways to explore and engage in healthier lifestyle options,” said Córa Carrig, co-ordinator, Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership. “It’s all about creating a gap in one’s schedule to make physical activity happen and be a part of our lives. Saturday’s walk provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to get 2017 off to an active start.” This is the seventh year of this national event where thousands of people through-

out the country, including in Kerry, put on their walking shoes and take to the pathways of Ireland. As Operation Transformation has linked with Sports Ireland (formally known as Irish Sports Council), the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership is responsible for organising and co-ordinating the walks in Kerry. Registration is essential for all events, stressed Córa. “So if you are not already registered with park-run, you can register for free at www.parkrun.ie/register for the Killarney and Tralee walks,” she added. “And don’t forget to bring your barcodes. For anyone participating in Listowel we ask that you pre-register for free at www.ot-listowel.eventbrite.ie.” All three events take place on January 7 at 9.30am to coincide with an RTÉ radio broadcast. People of all ages, fitness levels and abilities are invited to come along on the day.

Paudie O'Mahoney led 3000 participants in the Operation Transformation walk in Killarney in 2014.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU2017

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio will help unveil a new you ENSURING your body looks and feels its beautiful best, Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio offers a number of different programmes.

The studio provides three main weight-loss programmes: Universal Contour Body Wrap; toning tables; and the Eurowave inch-loss machine.

UNIVERSAL CONTOUR WRAP

THIS is a quick and easy way to lose inches, sculpt curves, detoxify, boost circulation and smooth the skin. Need we say more? This treatment is a must have for parties, weddings, holidays and any other time when you want to look your absolute best! The Universal Contour Wrap is a totally natural, effective and safe way to achieve excellent and lasting inch loss, detoxify the body, cleanse the skin and leave you feeling totally rejuvenated with wonderful smooth and silky skin. The treatment works by drawing out toxins from the fluid around the fat cells, whilst the bandaging technique works to compress and compact the soft fatty tissue, creating a smoother base over which the soft tissue lies. It is important to note that our process is not dehydrating one, you will not put back on the “lost inches” through drinking a glass of water. Your therapist will begin by measuring you and she will mark the points from where she has taken the measurement. We all love to know how many inches we have lost without breaking a sweat! Once all the bandages have been applied, you will step into a suit that helps keep the bandages in place while you relax for an hour while the wrap works its magic! During this hour, you can help pass the time by having another treatment such as a Dermalogica Buff Express Facial or a mini manicure (you get a €5 discount for each additional treatment you have while the wrap is on). Or you can relax on the treatment bed.

THE TRUTH ABOUT TONING TABLES

GYM enthusiasts have always been searching for more advanced exercise techniques that can provide a good, thorough workout without running down the body and increasing the probability of injury. Many trainers believe that toning tables represent such a breakthrough. But, is this just another case of something that’s too good to be true? How can a machine that seemingly does all the work for you be an effective mode of exercise? Toning tables support a form of passive exercise and work by exploiting your body’s natural stretch reflex. Every muscle automatically reacts when it’s stretched out, whether done so through nerve signals from the brain, or from an outside apparatus. By taking your body repeatedly through the motions of normal exercise, toning tables improve overall strength motor response even in the absence of the apparatus. So, by doing assisted toning table sit-ups, you are improving your body’s ability to do real sit-ups by strengthening the same muscle group. One of the main benefits of using toning tables is that they promote proper exercise technique. Most exercise and sports related injuries are attributable to poor technique. Toning tables are perfect for beginners because they literally walk you through each exercise step by step, so you’ll know how to properly execute specific moves and techniques. Even if you’re more experienced, these devices offer a perfect refresher course on how to best execute every facet of your routine (in order to maximize results and avoid injuries due to poor technique). In addition to helping avoid injury, toning tables are also ideal for those who are looking for a low-impact programme. In order to develop a more slender you, you must work with the machine instead of allowing it to work solely on you. As with every new regimen, you are encouraged to consult your physician beforehand.

EUROWAVE/INCH LOSS PROGRAMME

RELAX for 20 minutes while completing the equivalent of 200 perfect sit-ups. You'll love the treatment, especially when we're able to take off between one and three of your most stubborn inches in a single course. The Eurowave achieves toning, shaping and inch loss through the use of EMS (Electromuscle Stimulation). EMS is a very safe and simple procedure that uses painless faradic waves to stimulate the muscles and make them work – much like you would at the gym. However, there is no resulting build-up of lactic acid, which means you aren’t sore after a treatment! The achieved muscle tone is real. After a course of 10 sessions you will look and feel better, your core muscles will be strengthened, toned and tightened and even working out at the gym can be easier… making sustaining the results completely possible. And the best part? These inches will stay off for six to eight months as long as your weight remains constant.

Wedding bells for Janie and John Joe BY EVE KELLIHER

K

ERRY provided a picture-perfect backdrop to the nuptials of Janie Golden and John Joe Biggins. Janie, from Reading, and John Joe, from Cong, Co Mayo, exchanged vows in Jacks’ Coastguard Restaurant, Cromane, which is where they also held their reception. “The venue was perfect for our intimate wedding with close family and friends,” said the bride. “The food was amazing and the location was just perfect.” Humanist celebrant Seamus de Burca officiated at the ceremony and Killarney photographer Sally MacMonagle captured the big day on camera. “The pictures were taken in the grounds of Jacks' and on the beach at Cromane,” said Janie. “Sally was great fun and captured the day in a very natural way.” Janie’s son Thomas Golden walked her up the aisle and John Joe’s son Ciaran Biggins was his best man. The bride’s nieces Charlie Penglase (Reading) and Tegan Golden (Coolbane West, Killorglin) took on the important role of flower girls. Janie’s mother Violet Golden was guest of honour. “My dad Maurice Golden, who died in 2003, was originally from Upper Tullig, Caragh Lake, Killorglin,” said Janie. The newlyweds, who will reside in Reading, are looking forward to the next time they visit family and friends in Kerry. “We spent two weeks in Ireland, staying for a few days in Cong after the wedding,” said Janie. “Our wedding was a very relaxed, perfect day and we couldn't have wished for anymore. The dance floor was never empty! The staff were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We and our guests had the most brilliant day there and we will treasure the memories. JP Murphy, the resident pianist, was absolutely brilliant.” • If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Thousands of drivers unaware that they might be uninsured THE insurance industry in Ireland must clarify the exact position with regard to the reporting of penalty points to insurers and the impact on a driver’s cover. I have received a number of queries from constituents who are concerned about the validity of their policies. Most drivers assume that they are only required to inform their insurers when it is time to renew their insurances that they have received penalty points. However, it has come to light that some insurers now expect policyholders to inform the company as soon as points are received. If they aren’t informed, policies may become null and void, leaving the policyholders in a very precarious situation. This is a very serious issue, and one which will be very disconcerting to thousands of drivers in the county. By the end of September, 144,956 drivers across the country had received penalty points this year. The vast majority of who are probably unaware of the requirement to inform their insurers as soon as they receive them. Insurance Ireland has informed me that certain policies expect a “continuing duty of disclosure from the insured party” over and above disclosures at the renewal of premiums. This will be news to a lot of motorists, and unless they have read, in detail, the fine print of their policies, will put them at risk of voiding their policies.

Deputy John Brassil.

The insurance industry has an obligation to clarify the rules regarding the reporting of penalty points, and ensure that an awareness campaign is rolled out to educate and inform policyholders. The constituents who have been in touch with me are deeply concerned that a) their policies might be void and b) they were unaware of it, and the implications for them as drivers. Drivers need clarity on this issue. The impact of potentially thousands of uninsured drivers on our roads could be incredibly serious. I would urge any motorist who has been affected by this loophole to get in touch with me, and let me know what happened their policy. John Brassil, Kerry Fianna Fáil TD, Leinster House, Dublin 2

We need to focus on trade and technology education AT THE December 2016 monthly meeting of Kerry County Council, I proposed a motion calling on the Government to ensure that educational colleges at second and third level would give due and appropriate prominence to trade and technology education. For too long in Ireland the educational focus had been on academic subjects. There has been a welcome change of emphasis in recent decades but that there is still a need for greater development of the skills needed in various industries. During recent visits by Kerry councillors to factories in the county, the members were informed that sourcing people with the required skills is a problem. The manager of one very large factory said that finding suitably trained and talented tradespersons is his main difficulty. I asked that a committee would be formed in Kerry comprising Kerry Education Services, the ITT, second-level schools and representatives from the industries within the county. Such a committee would seek to ensure that a curriculum appropriate to the needs of industry in the county would be actively pursued and implemented. The benefits of this process will undoubtedly be that Kerry will have a rich pool of talented people who will be available to work in the county’s dynamic industries. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

August THERE was both agony and ecstasy in Croke Park for Kerry in August. After the minors powered towards their goal of threein-a-row All-Ireland titles, there was absolute heartbreak for the Kerry senior team as their dream of an All-Ireland final date with Mayo on September 18 was snatched from them by the Blues. He might be older than Ireland but 103-year-old Michael O’Connor from Killarney showed he was full of energy as he launched the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show. Meanwhile, unusually high temperatures meant that the red deer rut was more subdued than usual. “Other than occasional roaring, stags that would be normally fighting each other at this time of the year are still in stag herds living happily together with no rutting activity,” said Damien Hannigan of the Wild Deer Association of Ireland.

November

update

IRELAND’S 2023 Rugby World Cup bid took a huge leap forward in November. Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium is one of 12 potential venues for hosting the Rugby World Cup, if Ireland’s bid for the 2023 tournament is successful. In November it was confirmed East would meet West in a Zen style as 750 practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism pledged to converge on Killarney for a retreat course spring. A hero’s welcome awaited champion powerlifter Frances Arthur when she arrived at work. The Killarney teacher was on top of the world as pupils and her fellow staff members at Holy Cross Mercy National School gave her a standing ovation in recognition of her triumph at the World Powerlifting Championships in Italy. Frances had a clutch of coveted international awards to show her pupils after she won top prizes in the championships, which are organised by the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation and took place in Lake Garda. No doubt the resounding rounds of applause could be heard on high when it was announced that the St Mary’s Church of Ireland railings project had scooped the coveted overall prize at the Killarney Looking Good Awards. The seasonal sense of anticipation filled Killarney at the end of November with two key events kicking off the festive season. The first was the Killarney Rotary Evening of Wine & Art, which took placed in The Malton on the last Thursday of the month, and it was followed a day later by the first of the 2016 series of Christmas in Killarney Magic Parades.

December WORLD-RENOWNED accessibility advocate Joann O’Riordan is a regular visitor to Killarney and Joanne was delighted to do the honours as she launched a new wheelchair-accessible shuttle bus at The Gleneagle Hotel in December. Meanwhile, another visionary lady, Agnes Rooney, Killarney, decided to get in gear to take action when she discovered many members of the local community face difficulty in going about their daily lives because of the lack of wheelchair-accessible transport. Agnes embarked on a mission to raise funds for a bus for the Kerry Parents & Friends Association and it was a case of celebrations all round at the Kerry Parents & Friends Association, Old Monastery, Port Road, as Agnes and her group of fundraisers unveiled the grand total of €51,830, and secured the purchase of a 171-registered Ford transit. Many youngsters – and the young at heart – enjoyed a truly enchanting journey at Muckross this Christmas. Santa Claus landed his sleigh at Muckross Traditional Farms in Killarney National Park and took up residence there for the festive season. Outgoing Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Kate O’Leary received a standing ovation when she addressed the annual general meeting of the Chamber. Incoming Killarney Chamber president Paul O’Neill presented Kate with a beautifully framed display of photographs from her two-year term as president. A number of top acts entertained in style at the INEC Killarney throughout the month, culminating in country superstar Nathan Carter’s New Year’s Eve performance.

Nathan rings in the New Year in tuneful style KILLARNEY was rocking like the wagon wheel of the famed song as singing sensation Nathan Carter ushered 2017 in at the INEC. The charismatic and talented star is always a popular visitor to the town and tickets for his New Year’s Eve concert had sold out well in advance.

Excitement started to escalate early in the day as soon as Nathan’s signature tour bus rolled into town and made its way along the Muckross Road to the INEC. And the fun reached fever pitch at midnight as the country music superstar rang in the New Year and fans danced and sang along to Nathan classics into the small hours.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

BISHOP CREAN TO GIVE TALK ON CHANGING PATTERNS OF FAITH

THE Diocese of Kerry is delighted to welcome Bishop Billy Crean to give the public talk at the annual Clergy Assembly on Tuesday, January 10. The title of his talk is “From what wells do we drink now? Reflections on the changing patterns of faith and practice in Ireland today”. The venue is The Gleneagle Hotel, Muckross Road, Killarney, with the talk beginning at 8pm and concluding by 9.30pm. There is no admission fee and all are welcome. Bishop William Crean, Bishop of Cloyne, was ordained a bishop on Bishop William Crean, January 27, 2013. Born in Tralee in December 1951, Bishop Crean is the son of the late Patrick and Margaret Crean (née O’Donnell). His primary and secondary education was in Tralee and later in Saint Brendan’s College, Killarney. As one whose family numbered several vocations to priesthood and the religious life, he too heard the call to the priesthood. Having completed his BA in Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, he became a student at the Pontifical Irish College, Rome, while completing his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University and he went on to obtain his Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 1977. He was ordained to the priesthood in June 1976 for service in the Diocese of Kerry. There followed several pastoral appointments in Canon Crean’s native diocese. Whether as catechist/chaplain in Killorglin (1977-1980), chaplain in Tarbert Comprehensive School (1983-1986), or Director of Blessed John Paul II Pastoral Centre in Killarney with further duties as Diocesan Advisor to Post-Primary Schools and Director of Adult Religious Education (19871996), Canon Crean’s apostolate centred strongly on the transmission of the faith in an educational setting. During those years, Canon Crean also found time to study for a Diploma in Religious Education at Mount Oliver Institute of Education in Dundalk (1987) and undertake Sabbatical Studies at Weston School of Theology in Boston (1998-1999). He also became the Founder Director of Radio Kerry (Director 1990-2012), representing Ardfert Christian Media Trust, a joint shareholding by the Catholic Church and the Church of Ireland. He served as well for two years as Chairperson of ARENA (Adult Religious Education National Association). Canon Crean’s experience has been enriched by his pastoral assignments. Following curacy duties in Glenbeigh (1980-1983) and Killorglin (19961998), he has served as Parish Priest in Castlegregory/Cloghane (19992006) and in Caherciveen from 2006 to the present day. He was on the national executive of the National Conference of Priests of Ireland for three years in the 1980s. Well rooted in the spiritual heritage of his native Kerry, he is committed to dialogue between faith and modern culture. Bishop William Crean is Chairman of Trócaire, a member of the Council for Catechetics, and a member of the Episcopal Commission for Social Issues and International Affairs.

WHAT DOES A TONING TABLES WORKOUT DO?

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio’s Jill Duggan gives an overview of the benefits of toning tables

HOME from her base in New York for the festive season, Kerry blogger Erika Fox took centre stage in Killarney. Erika, of the Retro Flame blog, was guest of honour in the new ladies fashion destination, Scarlett on Scotts Street, for the boutique's special Christmas event. As guests sipped on bubbly, Erika presented her favourite Scarlett looks, while also giving an insight into how to achieve a chic, seasonal look.

THE most obvious benefit of the toning tables is that they relieve stress on joints and muscles. There isn't any jumping or straining of muscles and joints that goes along with more traditional exercising.

Tightens muscles The toning table is believed to relax muscles that are overused while tightening underused muscles at the same time. The body is basically repositioning itself with the toning table, which improves the body's form and posture. Improves circulation The toning table can help improve circulation, so it is good for people who are easily fatigued when exercising. The tables can also increase blood and lymph-fluid circulation.

Improves posture Another great benefit of the toning table is that it actually can re-engineer a person's body posture. Improved body posture is what Stauffer believed would benefit people the most, because it would take away the stress on joints and muscles from bad body positioning and would force other muscles to come into play. Eliminates toxins The toning table is thought to increase blood and lymph-fluid circulation, which is important because an improved lymphatic system will carry toxins away from the cells and into the lymph nodes much more readily. •To book a free one-to-one trial on the toning tables call us on 064-6632966

Pharmacists advise patients to get flu jab

AS HEALTH authorities report an increase in influenza cases and influenza-like illness, pharmacists have reminded the public that it is not too late to get the flu vaccination and advised people, particularly those in at-risk categories, to get vaccinated. Latest reports confirm that levels of influenza and respiratory illness have almost doubled across the country over the past two weeks and the rate is expected to increase further in the coming weeks. Ann Marie Horan, pharmacist and member of the Executive Committee of the Irish Pharmacy Union, said the flu vaccination is the best way to reduce the chances that a patient will get the flu and spread

it to others. “We would encourage patients, especially at-risk patients, who include elderly people, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses, to visit their local pharmacy to get the flu vaccine now,” said Ms Horan. “It is not too late. The service is available free of charge from pharmacists to anyone who holds a medical card.” While it can often be difficult to tell the difference between the common cold and flu, flu is a much more severe illness than a cold. Flu symptoms, particularly fever and muscle aches, tend to come on suddenly, whereas a cold usually starts gradually with symptoms of a sore throat and a blocked or runny nose.

Getting in harmony to raise funds for Aware

SINGERS of all ages struck a chord with their audience in December as generated funds for depression support charity Aware. The second annual What Is Christmas concert, which took place in the Church of the Resurrection, raised an impressive €1160 for Aware! The concept for the concert was the brainchild of the Killarney singer Grace Foley, who said: “Christmas can be such a magical, happy time of year, but it can also be a very difficult time for some people. I was aware of the fact that some people feel quite low

and alone at Christmas and all the festivities and celebrations can be very overwhelming. I wanted to organise a concert that highlights all the different aspects to Christmas.” Grace was joined for the event by MC Liz Ryan, St Oliver's Primary School Choir led by Josephine Doncel, the newly formed Killarney School of Music Senior and Junior Choirs, violinist Niamh O’Raw, soloist Ciaran Quigley, pianists Jayme Linehan and Noel O’Sullivan, guitarists Conor Linehan and Paul O’Raw, the Church of the Resurrection folk group Risen, and

Grace Notes New Year...

This January, Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley asks you to take a moment to take stock of all your achievements over the past 12 months

IT IS easy to list off the things we would like to achieve next year but I think it is vital to acknowledge and accept, with kindness, the journey we have taken in the past 12 months. I personally have had the habit of trying to push the memory of all negative experiences into the back of my mind. Over years and years of doing this I ended up with a closet full of negativity that I was terrified would burst open one day! The more I tried to bury my mistakes and failings, the more power they had over me. I now try to look back on my moments of darkness and tell myself that not only did I survive those times but I have thrived because of them. I feel a great sense of fulfilment because I know how far I have come and how much stronger a person I am because of the hardships I have faced.

I love music with all my heart because I lost it for a while. I love the people around me because I have fought to make sure I am surrounded by family and friends, despite being told that a musician cannot have that life. I love my career path because I am realising the dream of my 14-year-old self, who I refused to

let down. To be 'ok' with myself on a bad day and to love myself every other day is my goal in life. It is not easy. I spent so many years being my own harshest critic, which is a very hard habit to kick. I find that instead of trying to silence my critic I now try to tell myself that I have grown, I am growing and I will continue to grow until I breathe my last breath. I want to continue to share my gifts in 2017 because it's fun and it's scary and it's living! I will sign off with this quote. 'Without clouds the rain can't wash the land. Without rain the grass won't hide the sand. Without grass the flowers bloom won't grow. Without pain, the joy in life won't show'.

A presentation of a cheque for €3,861 to the Friends of Marymount Hospice, Cork and in memory of the late Noreen Long took place in the Wallis Arms Hotel. The impressive fundraising resulted from a sky dive by Maria (niece of the late Noreen) and Timothy (son of the late Noreen) which took place in Kilkenny; front, Timothy Long, Cáit McCarthy representing Friends of Marymount Hospice, Maria Murphy; back, Paula Long, Lisa Fleming (daughter), Christy Long (husband of the late Noreen), Geraldine (daughter), Margaret Murphy.

A WEEKLY WEEKLY ROUND-UP ROUND-UP OF OF NEWS NEWS + + A A SOCIAL CONTRACT

LET’S PUT MORE THOUGHT INTO THE PERFECT PRESENT I CAN’T help but notice just how many people were under pressure as they scurried about trying to find the perfect gift over the past festive season. And the impossibility to please everyone is evident in the popularity of the unwanted gifts appeal which has become part of Christmas at this stage. While I can’t dispute that giving and receiving presents is a pretty magical aspect of Christmas, whatever your age, a negative side effect is that many people become stressed out, or indeed financially stretched, in their quest for gifts. And the sad part of it is, most people are indifferent to what they receive – regarding it as so much clutter to be regifted or disposed of. Isn’t it time, as adults, we were open about gift giving and simply give specific requests? Some might see that as something fairly demanding, but it is much more logical. Why should people feel coy about asking for exactly what they want or need, whether that is a material object or a promise of a good deed or a gift of your time, in the year ahead (babysitting vouchers, for instance!). But in the meantime, there has been a hugely positive movement that has seen people regifting and simultaneously doing a good deed as they flock to St Mary’s Pro Cathedral in Dublin to place unwanted Christmas gifts at the crib there. These will be given by Crosscare to homeless people. Gifts can be brought to the Pro Cathedral in Dublin until today, January 6. Crosscare – the social care agency of the Archdiocese of Dublin – will redistribute the gifts, but says it will also hold back many of them for Christmas 2017.

The issue of public sector pay is set to become the biggest challenge to the government this year. On the one hand you have public sector workers seeking to restore their pay and conditions to pre-recession levels while, on the other hand, government representatives are insisting there’s no going back to those heady days ever again as there’s no money in the kitty. Maybe Enda was thinking out loud when he suggested that pensions paid to public servants should be reviewed in the context of forthcoming pay talks with the unions. By highlighting public service pensions, Enda is saying what a lot of people are thinking. The public pay bill and the pensions paid to public servants are a huge burden on the taxpayer and it’s only natural they be looked at in a new light. However, if Enda wants to establish a new social contract he should ensure the old contract is honoured. Of course public sector pensions are generous but they were part of a package negotiated in different times. Teachers started their careers on low pay and incremental pay scales spanning 25 or 30 years. Young teachers started on low

pay. They worked on low rates of pay for years. They married, built homes, started families and educated their children on still relatively low pay. It was only when they got older and the mortgage was paid and the children educated, that the money got any good: just when they didn’t need it. They worked and scrimped and saved all their lives but they were safe in the knowledge that their old age was secured by a generous pension. True, teachers and other public servants retired on half pay and a lump sum of one-and-a-half-times final salary but that was the social contract at the time and it was this social contract which also bound them to low pay for years. Maybe when Enda looks at the pension issue he might like to ponder on the absurd situation whereby wives of public servants are often denied the Old Age Pension in their own right. Because a woman who married a guard or a teacher decided to give up her job to become a full-time mother and homemaker, she is not entitled to an OAP in her own right. This is wrong. Perhaps, Enda, it’s time to think it out again.

A KERRY academic has been tasked with the coordination of the European Social Survey in Ireland. Gneeveguilla native Dr Brendan O’Keeffe is a senior lecturer in Geography at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, and is currently heading-up this major study that will endeavour to give unique insight into the rapidly changing social landscape in Europe, and more importantly, Ireland. Established in 2001 the ESS is a social survey designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe’s changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of its diverse populations. The survey will measure people’s attitudes towards a range of social issues such as

immigration, sexuality, politics and life satisfaction. It will also consider social changes in demographics, family and lifestyle, with the findings playing an important role in informing and shaping future policy in a wide range of areas. The data provided will highlight the changing trends in Ireland, changes which will influence decisions made in order to keep our country socially fluent. The results will, according to Dr O’Keeffe “help us understand how Ireland compares with European counterparts in our attitudes to our lives, our Government and our country; and help us make decisions that reflect what our society deems most important”.

VIEWS FROM FROM KERRY KERRY AND AND AROUND AROUND THE THE WORLD WORLD VIEWS SEPARATING THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF It can be hard knowing what to believe when it comes to health information, says Trevor O’Donoghue. “RED wine in moderation is good for you”… “No it’s not, all alcohol is bad”...“More than two eggs a week are bad for you”…“No they’re not, eggs are good for you”... OPEN a newspaper or fire up the internet and you are hit with an avalanche of information. Some of it news-worthy, some not, but all of it fighting for your attention. It can be hard to sort out the wheat from the chaff. With the advent of digital and social media, and the proliferation of smartphones, access to information and news is at our fingertips 24/7. This can be a good thing, with citizen reporters bringing us news from the front lines and sharing unique perspectives on events. It can also be a bad thing, allowing every crank or corporation with an agenda and an internet connection to masquerade as a journalist. It used to be easier to make sense of it all. Opening our daily or weekly broadsheet, we could relax, safe in the knowledge that the guardians of the truth would take care of it for us and only publish the truth, with every story being fact checked for accuracy, relevance and BS. We could put our faith in the journalists to bring us the truth, instead of having to try and sort through it all by ourselves. Today it is a different story, with business at the speed of light and instant news, high journalistic standards can sometimes be compromised for speed of publishing and

getting the scoop. This time of year, health information, often “sciency” sounding, is to be found everywhere. It will be accompanied by headlines designed to suck you in. Fad diets, miraculous detoxes, amazing super foods, wondrous berries and life affirming waters promise to transform your life. It can be hard knowing what to believe. Often research is funded by lobby groups with agendas. Press releases are dressed up as hardhitting stories. Conflicting and confusing information abounds. I would love to be able to point readers in the right direction and straight to the truth, but unfortunately I can’t. All I can do is advise caution, a healthy dose of scepticism, and perhaps for 2017 an awareness of the maxim “Don’t believe everything you read”. Happy New Year. • Feeling curious about the world around you? Email any science-related question you might have to Trevor at ftrevorodonoghue@gmail.com

THIS week saw Killarney named as one of the world’s 10 best places to retire when it made the number 10 spot on Oyster.com’s list of “retirement-worthy spots”. Hiking trails, shops and restaurants, and golf courses are listed as just a few of the reasons to retire in Killarney. The hotel site writes: “Are you Irish? Or just love rolling green hills and horsefilled farmlands? Killarney, Ireland, may be the ideal place for you to relocate. The town is a stop on the famed Ring of Kerry and has excellent hiking trails in the adjacent national park.” According to a survey, one third of Irish-Americans would like to retire in Ireland; unfortunately, the high financial requirements keep the dream out of reach for many in the US. Killarney is the only Irish destination to make the cut, with Puerto Vallarta in Mexico top of the list, which includes holiday destinations in Costa Rica, Spain, Thailand, Italy, Malta, Ecuador, Panama and France.

Killarney antiques fair is a must-visit this Sunday DO YOU like shows like Cash in the Attic, Deal or no Deal and The Antiques Roadshow? Well, take note that a must-visit antiques fair takes place in Killarney this Sunday, January 8. The Dromhall Hotel will host the Killarney Antiques, Art & Vintage Fair from 11am to 6pm. This is a Hibernian Antique Fair by Robin O’Donnell, who has run antique fairs throughout Ireland for 33 years, including the National Antique Fairs in Limerick, Cork and Dublin. “Imagine the entire ballroom full from top to bottom with almost 100,000 antiques of every description? Then you start to get the picture of what will be on offer at Hibernian Antique Fairs’ first fair in Kerry this year!” said Robin. “Are you a fan of Cash in the Attic, Deal or no Deal and The Antiques Roadshow? Well then if your answer is yes, then the Killarney fair is not to be missed as it is all of the above wrapped into one.” Over 20 antique shops, art galleries and vintage dealers will be present selling their wares from across Ireland. “The fair has been successfully for over 26 years, thanks to the support we receive each and every time in Kerry,” added Robin. “No matter what your interest level, no matter what your budget, there will be something here for you.” Expect to find “everything from a pin to an anchor”, adds Robin, with antique furniture for the big or smaller home, Irish art both contemporary and old, china and porcelain, jewellery (top end and costume), coins and banknotes valuations (both buying and selling), silver and silver plate, Waterford Crystal, clocks, books, fishing gear, toys, train sets, vintage items and Victorian tools. Admission includes a raffle and is €2.50 for adults, with children going free. See www.hibernianantiquefairs.com for further details.

Garden Magic TIME TO TAKE STOCK

Debby Looney offers some advice on planning for the year ahead

THE past fortnight was possibly the only one in the year that the avid gardener might take a rest. However, that doesn’t mean we were not planning, taking notes and getting ready to create a new bed, veggie plot or focal point! Thinking of treating your favourite gardener with a post-festive season New Year’s gift? Stainless steel tools are always welcome, from trowels to rakes! Secateurs are also a welcome gift; Kent and Stowe is a quality brand. The Royal Horticultural Society has a fantastic website, with excellent downloadable items, such as these plant lists: “Perfect for Pollinators” and “Plants for Bugs”. Another interesting gift for those with a passion for sustainable gardening might be “Permaculture” by Bill Mollison, a free PDF

book. For young gardeners the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN have a very engaging book with puzzles and quizzes about vegetable gardening on their website. There are plenty of plants of interest at the moment but my top pick would have to be a Christmas Rose, or a Hellebore. With its’ pure white flowers against dark green foliage it is a striking plant. It is perfect for a damp shady spot, but can be kept indoors during colder times. The only thing I would remind you to do, in case it gets very cold, is protect your tree ferns, Fatsias and Camellias/Rhododendrons. One very sharp frost may damage those tender plants. Thank you for all the encouraging, inquisitive and thought-provoking emails.

Ford Mustang goes electric in 2020 .FORD has announced it will make a new hybrid version of its iconic Mustang, along with other models in a bid to slash emissions, improve fuel economy and reduce running costs of the vehicles it sells. According to Ford the four-cylinder hybrid version of the coupe will match the V8’s power (306kW) but produce even more torque than the naturally aspirated 5.0-litre’s 530Nm. In other words, the electrification of the Mustang will benefit performance just as much as fuel economy. More relevant, Ford also confirmed it was developing a plug-in hybrid

version of the Transit Custom and a Transit Connect hybrid that the car maker is developing as a new taxi to replace the Ford Escape hybrids used in mega cities like New York. The plug-in delivery van is due as soon as 2019, Ford says. Finally, Ford has confirmed it is continuing to develop pure-electric vehicles and will soon have a small SUV on sale that will cover 500km between charges

LIGHT and nimble, responsive and assured, the all-new KA+ Zetec reacts brilliantly to all driving conditions. KA+ comes with many clever technologies that make every drive easy and fun, and which help look after you and your passengers. KA+ is compact and agile enough to fit into tight city parking spots. And with the rear parking sensors, you can park with confidence. They detect when you’re too close to an object and show a visual alert on the centre console along with an audible warning. Hassle free, bump-free parking! The KA+ Zetec series features both cruise control and speed limiter. Use the steering wheel cruise controls to set a speed you’re comfortable with and the KA+ will maintain that speed without you having to keep your foot on the accelerator. If you need to go faster or slow down, then using the accelerator or brake as usual will override cruise control. The speed limiter is especially useful for driving in urban areas helping you to stay within the legal limit and is easy to adjust as the speed limit changes. The all-new Ford KA+ adds pleasure to every trip; test drive it now at Killarney Autos, Park Road.

Consisting of 2800 square metres of solar panels, the road is claimed to provide enough electricity to power street lightings of a small village. The road, only used by 2000 motorists a day, will undergo a two-year test by the French government to see if the new technology, developed by British engineering firm, Colas, is really viable. At just 7mm thick the small panels, called Wattway tiles, can be lined on any typical road because they’ve been engineered to offer similar levels of grip to a normal road’s surface. Able to withstand the weight of even the heaviest of trucks, it’s claimed that just four metres of a panel-lined road can provide all the electricity the typical French home needs (if you exclude heating). In the future, Colas hopes, Wattway tiles will be relied on as a serious source of green energy to power street lamps, road signs, homes, businesses and shops, and go on to become a source of power to remote, off the grid parts of the country.

CAREER OPTIONS Central Applications Office early online application closing date is January 20 Career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan has some advice on applying to third-level college IF YOU intend to apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) to third-level college for this year you can submit an early online application at a discounted application fee of e25 before 5.15pm on Friday, January 20. The normal application closing date is February 1 with an application fee of e40 so you can make a saving by getting it in early. You do not need to know your final order of courses at this stage as there will be opportunities to change your course choices until the final

change of mind closing date of July 1. However, restricted courses must be listed on your CAO form by February 1. To apply log on to www.cao.ie and enter your personal details including telephone numbers and email address. You will need to make your payment by credit card or alternatively by using an Application Fee Payment Form available from the CAO whereby you can pay the application fee in advance at a bank in Ireland. When entering your course choices remember to list your courses in order of preference. There are two lists on the CAO form, one for Level 6 (Higher

Certificate courses) and Level 7 (Ordinary Degree) courses and the other for Level 8 (Honours Degree) courses. You have the option to put ten course choices on each list and very careful consideration needs to be given to the order of these. If you do not get your first, second or third choice you may get your fourth, fifth or sixth so be prepared for this and choose wisely! Further information is available from www.cao.ie •You can contact Eithne Teahan by emailing eithnetk@gmail.com or calling 087-2028185

In loving memory of my dear Wife Catherine O’Leary, Knocklebede, Kilcummin, Killarney, who died on the 8th of January 2016.

A million times I’ve Needed You, A million times I’ve cried, If love alone could have saved you, You would never have died,

We gave our loved ones back to God, And just as he first gave them to us, And did not lose them in the giving, So we have not lost them, In returning them to him...

In life i loved you dearly, In death i love you still, In my heart you hold a place, No one else can ever fill, It broke my heart to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, Part of me went with you, The day God took you home

DOYLE

1ST ANNIVERSARY O’LEARY

A mother’s task is never done, And heaven must have needed one, For Angels came and took her hand, And led her to God’s Promised land, She’s surely kept quite busy there, While brushing little angels hair, And making sure they’re dressed just right, Not staying out too late at night. Although there’s sadness, this i know, She’s waiting there, her face aglow, I close my eyes and I can see, Her arms still open wide for me. Fondly missed and always remembered Your loving daughter Marie, Son-in-law John and Grand-Daughter Aimee & Rhea Kate. Anniversary Mass on Sunday January 8th 2017 at 11.15am in Kilcummin Church

In loving memory of a dear Mom Catherine O’Leary, Knocklebede, Kilcummin, Killarney, who died on the 8th of January 2016. You are the reason that all people who knew you were brought together, Somehow closer to each other. What is truly amazing is the way that no matter what the problems or complicated obstacles you had confront you, You constantly overcame them. Those of us that are still on earth will certainly miss you deeply but you will live in our hearts and our spirits.

In loving memory of Patricia Doyle who died on the 6th February, 2001 and her husband Patrick (Pa) Doyle who died on 10th January 1995, both late of 2 St. Brendan’s Place, Killarney. In loving memory of Mary O’Riordan late of Ballydribbeen, Killarney who died on the 6th January, 2007.

The hands of time keep turning, The years have slipped away, The memories we have of you, No one can take away, In God’s care you rest with love, Never more than a thought away, Missed and remembered everyday.

Though your smile is gone forever And your hand we cannot touch Still we have so many memories Of the one we loved so much Your memory is our keepsake With which we’ll never part God has you in his keeping We have you in our hearts.

When the emptiness of missing you Seems more than we can bear We whisper Mom we love you And always find you there For our world of memories You fill our hearts with pride We never walk alone Mom You are always at our side Put your arms around her Lord Kiss her smiling face For she was very special and can never be replaced. Though her smile is gone forever And her hands we cannot touch We shall never lose sweet memories Of our Mom we loved so much.

Time and years slip gently by But love and memories never die No longer in our lives to share But in our hearts you are always there.

Rugby news & views HAPPY new year to one and all. 2017 promises to be a very busy and highly entertaining year in rugby, and will hopefully live up to what 2016 offered. Munster are flying at the moment with two more excellent wins over the Christmas holidays. Rassie’s men beat a very poor Leinster at Thomond Park, while they took on Connacht at The Sportsground on New Year's Eve in atrocious conditions, conditions which

with Liam Murphy

should have suited the men from the West. Two excellent wins for Munster. This year’s 6 Nations Championship promises to be an absolute cracker, with Ireland on top form and England and France taking them on in Dublin. The England game in particular will be a fantastic spectacle as we get a chance to beat a team on a huge 12-win run. Then in

Killarney Rugby Club grounds now benefits from lights.

the summer, the British and Irish Lions travel to New Zealand, in what promises to be a thrilling tour. And let’s not forget that the Women’s Rugby World Cup comes to Ireland this August. The year ahead certainly looks to be an excellent year for rugby fans! Closer to home, our youths section are back in action this Saturday, with our U16s travelling to Listowel in the U16 Bowl competition and our U18s take on Castleisland/Abbeyfeale at Aghadoe in the U18 Bowl competition. Our seniors return to action in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup, and are due to take on Killorglin at Ballymalis in Listry next Sunday. Our minis are not back training until Saturday, January 14. Finally, anyone driving past our pitches at Aghadoe over the Christmas may have noticed that our lights are now up and working. This is an historic development for the club, which will allow for evening training throughout the winter. It’s truly great to see the training pitch lit up and to see funds raised through our ‘Your Club Your Country’ draw making such a difference. Keep posted for more next week.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

A Season of Sundays Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the Sportsfile publication that chronicles the highs and lows of the GAA year TWENTY years on the go now and A Season of Sundays 2016 continues to provide a pictorial a la carte menu capturing the essence of the GAA games over the past year. The winning formula has been the same throughout the years, splendid photographs captured by the Sportsfile photographers featuring the highs and lows of GAA games. The latter stages of the senior All-Ireland hurling and football championships get plenty of coverage, but there is much more than that as we marvel at the stories of early in the year as this covers the full calendar year. There is so much to behold and here are some of this writer’s favourite selection. Kerry hurling manager Ciaran Carey has a word in the year of Kerry’s Jordan Crowley before the match v Limerick. White coated umpires Pat Gaffney and John Weldon contemplate the weather and their task on hand as they leave the dressing room. There is the new county crest and the same club colours as Donal Óg Cusack leads out the Clare hurlers at the WIT Sports campus. The last one home is Noel McGrath who spent 11 minutes with supporters. What a challenge he overcame in 2016 defying and defeating a serious illness. There is the one to look out for as a future Kerry star. That is David Clifford; the Fossa genius pictured celebrating with David Shaw after that great goal scored in the All Ireland minor football final. Ground staff at Croke Park are pictured applying the finishing touches to the perfect pitch for the All Ireland football finals. We also note the GAA celebrating the Centenary of the 1916

Rising with its Laochra Show following the Division 1 and 2 football finals. Good to see Kerry keeper, Legion’s Brian Kelly featured. It is captioned as the flying Kerryman. Brian takes no chances as he punches the ball clear out of danger while Shane Enright keeps tabs on Roscommon’s Diarmuid Murtagh. Then there is the picture of Colm Cooper lost

in the Monaghan snowstorm. He scored six points that day and two valuable league points. It was more like water polo when Mayo midfielder Seamus O’Shea and Roscommon’s Fintan Clegg collide where the saturated Hyde Park pitch was a big talking point. Where is the ball one will ask in a congregated hurling airspace featuring the hands and the hurleys of Shane Barrett, Liam Rushe, Walter Walsh, Jonjo Farrell and TJ Reid? The coup de grace is the intensity shown from the All Ireland senior hurling where it is a case of no way through, not on the big day. Padraig Maher sets up a checkpoint for Liam Blanchfield of Kilkenny, a microcosm

of the ferocity that Tipperary brought to the 2016 hurling final. Another favourite of mine is the aftermath of the Kerry defeat at the hands of the Dubs. Kieran Donaghy lays sprawled on the Croke Park sod playing with his baby daughter Lola Rose. It helps to keep things in perspective. Was this his swan song in Croke Park, or will he be back? Good to see the Ladies football and the All Ireland club scene also represented The above is a personal selection of favourites, but there is so much more. Great work once again by Ray and his Sportsfile team. A Season of Sundays is a winner for any coffee table displaying the great sporting moments of the GAA calendar.

Memorial to Dick Fitzgerald THE members of Dr Crokes GAA Club joined forces with the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee before Christmas to erect a memorial on the grave of Dick Fitzgerald, one of the club’s most famous sons. Dick Fitzgerald had won five All-Ireland medals with Kerry. Our training pitch now has lights, which is a huge milestone in the development of the club. A huge thanks must go to Ger Moynihan and Paul Sheahan for their hard wok in seeing this through. The funds raised from the IRFU grand draw - ‘Your Club, Your Community’ has helped Killarney RFC realise this dream and now squads can train in the winter evenings at Aghadoe. Well done all!

Killarney Celtic FC

HAPPY NEW YEAR Best wishes to all Celtic supporters and players for a happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. 2016 was a good one for the club on and off the field, with both our senior and youths teams contesting finals, and our seniors remain completely unbeaten in the current season – long may it last! NATIONAL CUP DRAWS Killarney Celtic U15s have been drawn at home to Ferrybank of Waterford and our U12s have been drawn at home to Carndonough of Donegal. Both of these games will take place at the end of January in Celtic Park. STREET AND CHURCH COLLECTIONS We had both our annual street and church gate collections during the Christmas period. We had a huge turnout of volunteers and, once again, absolutely fantastic support from the general public. Mile buiochas to all involved. RESULTS U17 League: Killarney Celtic 3 Killarney Athletic 0 A great display against our derby rivals (and good friends, of course!) Killarney Atghletic. slotted two of his own. Debutant Eoghan Crowley also scored two great goals and the day was capped off with two more from Cian McAuliffe and Jack O’Neill. FLASHBACK

1994: On Sunday, January 2, 1994, St Paul's Revelles senior men’s team enjoyed an impressive 72-70 win away to Marathon, Limerick. The most significant factor in this victory was that St. Paul's were forced to line out without an American player after difficulties arose with Rob Robinson's flight from the USA. Marathon were at full strength with American star Bo Fitts hitting 45 points in this match but a tremendous all round team performance from the Killarney side secured a valuable win. Scorers for St Paul's were Vincent Daly 20, Brian Clarke 17, Pat O'Shea 10, Caoimhin O'Donoghue 10, Cormac O'Donoghue 7, James Fleming 6 and Edward O'Donoghue 2. A few days later on Saturday, January 8, St Paul's were pipped at the buzzer by Marian Dublin in the Pres Gym, Killarney. In a dramatic finish,

Marian's American Lennie McMillan was fouled as the final buzzer sounded and he sank two free throws to give the visitors a narrow 89-88 victory. McMillan finished with 38 points for Marian while top scorers for St Paul's were Rob Robinson 29 Vincent Daly 26 and Brian Clarke 11. 1995: On Friday, December 29, 1995, a capacity crowd filled the Presentation Gym, Killarney, for a superleague clash between Kerry Spring St Paul's and Garveys Tigers Tralee. This was a titanic encounter and is still talked about to this day. The Tralee side emerged victorious on a 105-103 scoreline after a remarkable three periods of overtime. The Killarney side had several opportunities to win this game and enjoyed a 42-29 lead at one stage before lead-

ing 44-35 at the interval. Tigers led 80-78 with three seconds left but Corey Jackson hit a buzzer beating equaliser and also forced a fifth foul from Tigers American Rick Leonard. Jackson then had a chance to win the game with a bonus shot for the foul from the free throw line but he missed forcing the match into overtime. The sides were level at 88 each after the first period and 95 each after the second period. Tigers snatched it in the third period of overtime to record a memorable victory and set them up to take the league title later that season. Top scorers for Killarney were Greg Ford 33, Corey Jackson 22, Vincent Daly 18 and Cormac O'Donoghue 13. Tralee's top scorers were Nigel Palmer 37, John Teahan 22 and Rick Leonard 21. A week later on Friday January 5, 1996, Kerry Spring St. Paul's bounced back with a 96-89 victory over North Mon in The Neptune Stadium, Cork. Level at 46 points each at the interval, St. Pauls' had a great final quarter

hauling back a 12 point deficit with Corey Jackson and Pat O'Shea the inspirational figures. Jackson finished with 38 points, including six three-pointers, followed by Greg Ford 28 and Pat O'Shea, 12.

PRESENTATION OF U14 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP MEDALS The Eoghan Ruadh U14 team that won the County Divisional Championship 2015 were presented with their medals last Friday night by Kerry Senior Football player, Paul Murphy, in Gneeveguilla CLG. The East Kerry Committee was represented by Chairman Tim Ryan, PRO Áíne NÍ Shuilleabhain and East Kerry Coiste na nÓg Chairman, Sean O’Sullivan. Paul congratulated the team and told the players that they are in a very unique position of winning the Under 14 County Championship and having a great chance of winning the Under 16 Championship if they focus and put in the effort. As Paul explained County Championship titles are not easy to win and there are alot of players who won All Ireland’s with Kerry Senior Football teams who don’t have a County Championship medal at any level. Paul encouraged the players to put in the hard work and effort required and also to enjoy the time together. Tim Ryan and Sean O’Sullivan both thanked Paul for taking time out of his busy schedule to present the medals. Many thanks also to Danny Fleming who arranged the night, to the team management and to Gneeveguilla CLG for hosting the presentation of medals and for their great hospitality.
