Vatican To Honour Monsignor O’Flaherty SOME 71 years after the ending of World War 2, Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty will be commemorated within the Vatican City in May 2016. Monsignor O’Flaherty (also known as the Vatican Pimpernel) lived in Rome from 1922 until he returned to Ireland in 1960. From 1938 until he left for Ireland in 1960, his home in Rome was an apartment in the College Teutonic (German College), which is located just outside St Peter’s Square, within Vatican City. It was from this apartment that he and Lt Col Sam Derry organised and ran the Rome Escape Line (1943-44), saving the lives of over 6000 Allied POWs, Anti-Fascists and Jews. During the 2014 O’Flaherty Rome Tour, which included a visit to the German College, the college Rector Dr Fischer expressed an interest in creating a permanent memorial to the Monsignor. “Over the past year, discussions have been held between the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society and Dr Fischer with a view to making this a reality,” said Jerry O’Grady, chairman, Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society. “The Society has been greatly assisted in this collaboration by Minister Jimmy Deenihan (Minister for the Diaspora), Ambassador Emma Madigan (Irish Ambassador to the Holy See), Kieran Troy (Rome Tours organiser), Harry Shindler MBE (veteran of the landing at Anzio and the liberation of Rome), Monsignor John Kennedy (of the Holy Office and current resident in the German College) and Fr George Hayes (vice-rector of

The garden of College Teutonic in Rome which was home to Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty.

the Irish College in Rome).” The commemorative plaque will be unveiled at a special ceremony at the German College (Rome) on Sunday, May 8. Representatives of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society and members of the O’Flaherty family will attend the ceremony as part of the 2016 Hugh O’Flaherty Rome Tour (May 5 to 9). Full details of the tour are available on www.hughoflaherty.com or from hofmemorialsociety@gmail.com – numbers will be limited to 50 so early booking is advised.

Boiling Oil Poured Over Victim A MAN poured boiling oil over a co-worker at a Killarney restaurant before fleeing the scene. A female employee working in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant received serious burn injuries in the assault at 3pm on Christmas Eve. It is alleged that a second employee intentionally poured boiling cooking oil over her head, neck, back and shoulder area. “The woman exited the kitchen and received assistance at the scene from gardaí and ambulance personnel. Her condition is described as stable,” said a Garda spokesperson. The 32-year-old woman, who is Chinese, is being treated at the specialist burns unit at Cork University Hospital. The man, who is also believed to be of Chinese origin, fled the scene. The woman was taken to Kerry General Hospital but was later transferred to the specialist burns unit in Cork because of the nature of her injuries. Despite a search of the area and other locations the suspect offender is currently at large and is wanted by gardaí for questioning. “No motive is apparent. Investigations are ongoing,” added the spokesperson. “Any information the public may have relating to the whereabouts of this suspect male should be communicated to Killarney Gardaí on 064-66 31222 or 064-6671160. All information received is confidential.”

Answer The Children First Act 2015 provides for a number of key child protection measures. Changes aimed at banning corporal punishment or use of force against children came into effect on 11 December 2015. Since that date, a person who physically punishes a child can no longer rely on the defence of “reasonable chastisement” in the courts. Before this change, parents or others acting in loco parentis could use physical force to punish their children, even though a law allowing parents to use force against their children was repealed in 2001. They could do this by relying on the common law defence of “reasonable chastisement”. This meant that a person who hit or smacked a child could argue that they did so to discipline the child. This was a defence to what would otherwise be an assault on the child. This defence can no longer be used in the courts. No new offence has been created and there are no laws that directly ban the smacking of children. However the withdrawal of the “reasonable chastisement” defence means that an effective ban is in place. You can visit Parenting24seven, an online resource from Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, to get information that is relevant to children and families at different stages of childhood and in different situations.

Killarney’s Magical Celebration Of The New Year THEY dreamed big and the Christmas in Killarney festival team’s creativity and imagination delivered in spades, with the 2015 programme culminating in a spellbinding New Year’s Eve parade. This year was the first time the town held a December 31 parade and family event that would attract large numbers of visitors and families into the town, stated the Christmas in Killarney committee. “The Christmas in Killarney festival committee aimed to make this year’s festival even bigger and better the previous years and have been overwhelmed with the positive feedback,” said Christmas in Killarney co-chairperson Ciara Treacy. People from far and near travelled to Killarney to kick-start the New Year celebrations and to line the streets of Killarney to say farewell to 2015 and welcome in a New Year. Ireland’s only children’s parade on New Year’s Eve set the scene for a fairytale atmosphere as Killarney was sprinkled with magic and a spectacular display of colour. The final Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade created plenty of excitement and atmosphere. Children’s face lit up with delight at the highly anticipated Disney-inspired “Magic” floats and Disney characters. “Due to the success of this year’s parade, the festival committee would hope to make it an annual family event. Christmas in Killarney would like to thank all the sponsors who supported the festival and everyone who attended the fundraising events,” said festival PRO Elaine Courtney.

May Day To Celebrate New Year IMELDA MAY along with Damien Dempsey and Hudson Taylor ushered in 2016 in style in the INEC Killarney. The audience sang and danced along to hits such as It’s Good To Be Alive and Johnny Got a Boom Boom. Since the release of her raucous debut Love Tattoo in 2009 (now eight times platinum in Ireland), Imelda has been one of the most strikingly original talents in the music arena. In 2010 came her six-times platinum album Mayhem, which she took on the road, bringing some good old-fashioned rock'n'roll spirit to audiences worldwide. Acclaimed artist Damien Dempsey helped ring in the New Year in style at the venue. The award-winning artist’s albums have topped the charts and achieved platinum status. Described by The Times as “the Bob Marley of Ireland” his stage presence was nurtured by the legendary folk singer Christy Moore. Supporting them were Hudson Taylor. Having honed their craft at an early age busking in Dublin, the brothers – Alfie and Harry – have become a firm favourite with their energetic live shows.

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Bishop’s message for the New Year

In the Church worldwide, New Year’s Day was celebrated as a day to pray for world peace. Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne looks ahead to 2016 THE theme Pope Francis chose for this year is “Overcome indifference and win peace”. The events that we commemorate in 2016, the centenary of the Easter Rising and the on-going centenary of World War One, make it truly appropriate to think of both Ireland’s needs and the needs of the world and to pray for the peace and wellbeing of all people in Ireland and worldwide. Regarding the First World War this year recalls a most tragic battle, the Battle of the Somme. One historian summed up the Battle of the Somme as commencing on July 1, lasting 100 days and involving 300.000 lives that were lost. Thousands of those lives were Irish. Here in our diocese we recall that the first three to die in Easter 1916 were the three men who were drowned off Ballykissane Pier, near Killorglin, on the Good Friday. Seven days later, the Friday of Easter week, The O’Rahilly from Ballylongford was killed in action in the centre of Dublin. The centenary celebrations of Easter 1916 and all that followed it are important for us as a nation. Is it sufficiently long ago for us to honour all people and organisations from all sides who were involved? Can we respect all, refraining from judgement? We remember and honour the women and men who took up Ireland’s cause in 1916 as very precious to us because they started us on a path that led to our freedom. A century later we see ourselves as an independent, successful, sovereign nation. An important element of this is the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 and the hope for lasting peace and justice it contains. When we recall 1916 the Easter Proclamation always comes to mind. The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all of the children of the nation equally, . . . We place the cause of the Irish Republic under the protection of the Most High God. In this supreme hour the Irish nation must, by its valour and discipline, and by the readiness of its children to sacrifice themselves for the common good, prove itself worthy of the august destiny to which it is called. These quotes inspire many questions: What part does faith in “the Most High God” play in life in Ireland today? Are we still resolved to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation? What of our readiness to sacrifice ourselves of the common good? Celebrating 1916 can evoke a renewal of commitment to the original vision. The values, the hopes and the ambitions of our people in 1916 and the values, the hopes and the ambitions of our people in the one hundred years since, will they inspire us afresh as we enter the second century after 1916? May commemorations throughout Ireland in the year ahead inspire us as a people to give of our best for our own people in Ireland and to open our hearts to world needs too. The great event we commemorate occurred at Easter, the highpoint of our annual celebration of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Thus the following words from the first letter of St John are appropriate to conclude: “This has taught us love – that He gave up his life for us; and we too, ought to give up our lives for our sisters and brothers. If a person who was rich enough in this world’s goods saw that one of their sisters or brothers was in need, but closed their heart to them, how could the love of God be living in that person?”

Prompt Actions Lead To Tom’s ‘Second Chance’ KILLARNEY teenager Tom Geaney was technically dead for 25 minutes but has made a full recovery thanks to the prompt actions of those around him. The 17-year-old from Muckross was helping to coach at a football match when he collapsed. Tom had suffered a ventricular fibrillation which led to a cardiac arrest. Speaking to Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1 this week, he said. “I was technically dead for 25 minutes so I suppose that is as much as a second chance as you’ll get.” One of Tom’s friends, Brendan Coppinger, was with him at the training. He had undertaken a CPR course as part of transition year. “I was terrified but I tried to just not feel scared or anything and concentrate,” said Brendan. Head coach Eugene Cosgrove had also completed a first aid course two years previously but said the

training kicked in when he needed it: “I got stubborn, I wasn’t going to stop CPR until something happened … I didn’t want to stop. I was scared to stop.” Tom began to respond after the fifth shock from the defibrillator and was rushed to hospital where he spent 36 hours in intensive care. He then made a full recovery over the following weeks. Twelve months on from the in-

cident Tom says, “If there was one piece of the puzzle missing, I probably wouldn’t be here today.” The equivalent of two jumbo jets full of people die unnecessarily every year in Ireland from cardiac arrest as they do not receive CPR on time, said the CEO of Irish Community Rapid Response, John Kearney. The pilot project Operation Resuscitation is being rolled out in Killarney and Kilkenny in partnership with Killarney and Beaufort Defibrillator Groups. “The aim is to train 25% of the population over the coming months and another 25% by the end of the year – making Killarney and Kilkenny the best place to survive a cardiac arrest,” said John.

Patricia launches Barraduff campaign A MOTHER whose son has a serious heart condition is planning to make her local community safer with the launch of a new first responder group in Barraduff. Patricia’s son Brian, nine, suffers from SVT or "racing heart” which sees his heart rate soar. Patricia Murphy has set up Barraduff Responders which will work with the National Ambulance Service and cover a fivemile radius. The group also hopes to install lifesaving defibrillators in the parish. “If I can help save one life then something good has come out of this,” said Patricia. A public meeting will take place next Thursday, January 14, at 7.30pm at Barraduff community field. All are welcome also to take part in a CPR course on Monday, January 11, from 5pm9pm at Unit 3, The Courtyard, Fairhill. Patricia can be contacted on 087-6831247 or barraduffresponders@gmail.com.

CLAIMS THAT THERE’S MORE CONCERN FOR FISH THAN FOR PEOPLE

‘Is Flooding Something We Are Always Going To Have To Dread?’

The Switzers' home in Glenflesk which was hit by flooding.

SERIOUS flooding was experienced in Glenflesk, Beaufort and Fossa in the past month. One of the families whose home was flooded was the Switzers in Glenflesk. Elizabeth and Damien and their three young sons had to move to the upper floor of their home when the ground floor was completely submerged in water. “Storm Desmond closed in and totally flooded the house – no sandbags could help!” Elizabeth told the Killarney Advertiser. Neighbours and friends rallied round, even to the extent of delivering sandbags by teleporter. “People were wonderful,” said Elizabeth. “We’re a happy bunch and we get on with things but going forward we’re just worried if it comes again what help is out there? Is this something we are going to have to dread?” There have been many calls for action in the wake of flood damage in Kerry. Councillors Danny Healy-Rae and Niall Kelleher have spoken of the need to dredge rivers where flooding occurs. “It’s a proven method, but there seems to be more concern for our fish than for our people and that is not right,” said Councillor Niall Kelleher. Ten houses were flooded in Glenflesk on December 5, with flooding occurring in Beaufort and Fossa residences also, and many other homes in these areas and also in Kilcummin under threat of flooding. A road in Foiladane, Glenflesk, was blocked with residents unable to go to and from their homes for almost two days. “I have fierce sympathy for those people whose Christmases were turned upside down,” said Councillor Danny Healy-Rae.

Water Wreaks Havoc At Golf Courses

Storm Costs Reach Millions

THE Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and Ross Golf Club felt the full force of the winter storms with serious flooding in both courses. The first hole at the Killeen Golf Course, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, lies submerged after Storm Frank. The Killeen and Mahony’s Point layouts have suffered to such an extent that a return to full-time play over the former (the venue for four Irish Open Championships and countless other major events) is unlikely before the end of February at best. Mahony’s Point could be back in action by late January and the clubhouse by the end of next week — provided there is not a repeat of the devastating rainfall. From December 5, the clubhouse, which is located on a promontory and is quite low lying, has been almost impossible to access as it is cut off by road. However, members and staff alike tackled the various challenges with good humour. When the storms relented, they opened 18 holes between the two courses and named it “The Ark Course”. It consisted of the first to the 12th holes on Mahony’s Point (with the exception of the fourth where work is underway on a tee complex).

THE toll of damage caused by the storms that battered Kerry since the start of December is expected to reach several million euro. It is estimated that some €1.5 million has been caused in damage to public infrastructure alone, including roads and bridges. A full assessment of recent events is being carried out to fully assess the extent of the damage to public infrastructure and a preliminary submission has been made to the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government, on the cost of the response and repairs required. The council is also assisting the Red Cross in processing any claims from businesses for emergency funding. A special meeting of the Municipal District of Killarney will be held in Killarney Library meeting room on Friday next, January 15, to discuss recent weather events including flooding, damage and funding options available. Kerry County Council paid tribute to the Kerry Severe Weather Local Assessment Team, an Inter-Agency Group consisting of Kerry County Council, Fire Services, Civil Defence, An Garda Siochána and the HSE. The group met frequently over the Christmas and New Year period to manage the response to the recent extreme weather conditions. “This was an extremely difficult period for local communities, households and businesses,” stated the council.

Editor’s View OUR hearts go out to those whose homes and properties have been affected by the December deluge. No sooner had homeowners cleared up after Storms Desmond and Eva than Storm Frank swept through Ireland, making for a dismal Christmas indeed. Recent weather events including flooding and damage caused by flooding will be tackled at a special meeting of Killarney Municipal District next week and it is hoped some solutions can be reached to help those affected. •Have you got a story or an opinion you would like to share? Focus on healthy choices of beer and wine for January NEW YEAR, new beginnings. A lot of us are thinking about getting back to the gym or out on the road. Many of us are considering giving the booze a little break for a while. Christmas tends to take its toll, both on the liver and the waistline. With that in mind I’m going to focus a little of some the non-alcoholic beers and low-alcohol wines that we have in the store.

Top of the range of the beers is the ever-popular Baltika Zero. Available in bottle and cans now, the St Petersburg brewed lager is fresh and zesty. If you want something with a little more body we have German Weisse Beer from Erdinger and Paulaner. If you simply want a reduced alcohol beer we also have 3.8%abv Carlsberg and Brandenberg which are a good alter-

In the Heart of the Sea IN THE winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is

pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is welcoming the return of its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition, says Jill Duggan

HERE we go again with our new year, new you resolutions. Christmas has come and gone, family has gone home and the biscuit tins are empty, so now it's time to focus on you. Weight loss and fitness are probably two of the most common New Year’s resolutions – and who can blame us! We all want to look and feel better. Here at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio we are dedicated to helping you achieve this goal. With our full set of six toning tables, a fullbody workout can be achieved in only 30 minutes. If you truly want to lose weight, then a food diary is an extremely important part of your weightl o s s plan. Sometimes we need

to be able to see what we are consuming on a daily basis in black and white to realise how much we actually do eat daily. Set a date, because tomorrow never comes, mark a date on your calendar and make sure you stick to it. The sooner you commit to healthy eating and exercise the sooner you will see a difference and notice the benefits. Remove temptations. Go into your kitchen and remove all the unhealthy food. These steps are crucial since the temptation to cheat is multiplied by 10 if these foods are in the house. Also, reducing portion size is a must when you are trying to achieve weight loss, and it helps to cut down on foods like potatoes and bread. Set realistic goals; remember it did not take two weeks to gain the extra weight. Weigh loss is a marathon not a sprint. To book a free one-to-one trial on the toning tables call us on 0646632966.

In all my Lose Weight Clinics, I explain why diets don't work, and why people struggle to try and lose weight, even those people who are struggling to keep the weight off, I explain the importance of exercise, the treadmill, the gym, the keep fit, the walking, the swimming, and all the other keep fit activities. January A PARTY atmosphere filled the streets of Killarney as the Christmas in Killarney festival street bash helped rIng in 2015. Killarney’s very own X Factor star Ben Quinlan showcased the talent that caught Simon Cowell’s eye by performing a host of festive songs. There was an outpouring of concern and support after three members of a Killarney family were seriously injured in a horrific car accident in Australia in early January. The Brosnan family, Gerard and Marguerite and their daughter Karen, were in hospital care following the accident. Kate O’Leary of The Laurels Bar took the helm as Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president. An attack by vandals resulted in the damage of stained-glass windows in St Mary’s Church which cost tens of thousands of euro to repair. The Muckross Park Hotel and Spa in Killarney was sold to Corkbased hotel firm iNua Hospitality. DTZ Sherry FitzGerald sold the five-star hotel, which dates back to 1795, for e6.25m. Meanwhile, after 14 years at the helm of the Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa, Marie Chawke announced she was leaving her position as general manager of the five-star property. Describing the move as “a big change”, Marie said: “I will miss my team dreadfully, but they will ensure that it is business as usual,” she said. The new Killarney Festival of Music and Food was announced, with over 20,000 people expected to converge on Killarney for the summer event.

February KERRY footballers James O’Donoghue, Jonathan Lyne and Kieran O’Leary got on their marks alongside members of Spa Muckross Athletic Club to launch the 2015 Killarney 10-Mile Road Race, to support the development of a 200m microtrack and a floodlit all-weather pitch. Hits like “Ordinary World” and “A View to a Kill” were being hummed around Killarney as it was announced that Duran Duran would headline Killarney Festival of Music & Food. Archdeacon Michael Murphy continued to inspire all involved in the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition and in February the Killarney committee ran a recruitment drive to bring the number of litter-picking volunteers in the town to the 90 mark – one for every year of Fr Michael’s life. A sold-out success, the Strictly Come Dancing Killarney event in aid of the Irish Cancer Society stepped centre stage in sparkling style before the capacity audience in the INEC on February 14. The fancy footwork of the 24 Killarney dancers impressed and it was Grainne O’Sullivan and Michael Bernard O’Donoghue who tripped the light fantastic to victory. A musician’s experience of having equipment to the value of almost e4000 stolen from her car ended on a happy note when Killarney Gardaí recovered the goods. Maria Ward was robbed of instruments including a handmade Eamonn Cotter flute – which had been especially made for a left-handed player – and a Yamaha guitar. Killarney was in mourning in February following the untimely death of Donal O’Callaghan, College Street. Hundreds paid their respects to the popular 49-year-old, at the family business, the Fáilte Hotel, Killarney, and at the funeral in St Mary’s Cathedral. An anti-water charges rally was held at Market Cross on February 28, with protesters then marching to the Labour Party AGM in the INEC.

SPORTING heroes led the way as grand marshals of the Killarney St Patrick’s Day parade, with the All-Ireland winning senior and minor captains Fionn Fitzgerald and Kieran O’Leary and Liam Kearney taking the helm. The event was part of the very successful St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne 2015. Over 5,000 dancers high-kicked their way to Killarney for the 2015 An Comhdháil World Irish Dance Championships in March. Killarney was in celebratory mode as the town was named the best rated destination in Ireland for the first time in the seventh annual Travellers’ Choice awards for destinations, announced by travel site TripAdvisor. The talented performers at Killarney Musical Society dazzled as they celebrated the society’s 30th anniversary with the Irish premiere of Ghost the Musical. Killarney’s Jessica Treyvaud was one of seven Kerry youngsters to feature in a new book Here I Am, in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. March winds swept across the Gap of Dunloe as a whole host of hardy fundraisers set their sights on Strickeen Mountain in aid of Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support and Kerry Hospice Foundation/Palliative Care Unit, Tralee. A prompt response by Killarney Gardaí led to the recovery of a stolen collection box and its contents after the box was taken a short time earlier from the Franciscan Friary, Fairhill, Killarney. Killarney said farewell to Paddy Cronin of Aughacurreen, Killarney, who passed away unexpectedly in March.

April KILLARNEY co-driver Paul Nagle described his inaugural victory in a round of the World Rally Championship as “a dream come true.” April saw the Fossa native and his Dungannon driver Kris Meeke motor to Rally Argentina victory in their Citroen Total Abu Dhabi Citroen DS3 WRCy. He represented Kerry South as a Fianna Fáil TD for 31 years, making John O’Leary the longest-serving Dáil deputy for the constituency, and his book On the Doorsteps: Memoirs of a Long-serving TD made for a riveting read when it was launched in April. Thugs were believed to have started a number of the fires that destroyed swathes of south Kerry and damaged thousands of acres in Killarney National Park. A special team of Gardaí was set up to track down the malicious fire-starters after the blazes threatened homes and Killarney National Park. Stunning local model Mags Kelleher was snapped up by the Andrea Roche Model Agency which has on its books such household names as former Miss World Rosanna Davison. Bride and groom Aishling Duggan and Jason McElligott hit the headlines when they took time out in Killarney between their church ceremony and reception to place a bet on the Aintree Grand National. BoyleSports promptly launched a hunt for the mystery bride and groom to give the happy couple a e100 bet on Many Clouds, who won the Grand National, at 25/1. Team Kerry was led out by none other than mythic warrior Cúchulainn who kept a watchful eye over proceedings from Molls Gap at the fourth annual county clean-up facilitated by KWD Recycling which drew over 3,200 volunteers. Killarney teenager Molly O’Mahony won a creative writing competition award at Listowel Writers’ Week for the fourth year in a row. 08.01.16 Killarney Advertiser

May

THERE were emotional scenes in Killarney in May as a rapturous welcome greeted Gerard, Marguerite and Karen Brosnan on their return from Australia. The Brosnans had spent five months in Perth recovering from a serious car crash on January 4 which claimed the life of the driver. Killarney Racecourse announced it would undertake an e850,000 redevelopment over the next five years. Meanwhile, the rain failed to play spoilsport on the opening day of Killarney’s May racing festival which kicked off the summer in style. Killarney Racecourse remembered local man Jeremy O’Neill on the Sunday, in the process raising funds for cancer research. Early risers were out in force as Nathan’s Walk/Darkness Into Light got underway from 4.15am in aid of Pieta House and in memory of local teenager Nathan O’Carroll. Kilcummin native Julett Culloty was crowned Kerry Rose. Just a year before, Julett had been diagnosed with one of the rarest forms of cervical cancer. Julett, now cancer-free, said her ambition is to raise awareness of the illness among younger women. There was good news on the jobs front for Killarney in May as local manufacturing and engineering group Tricel announced the creation of 100 new jobs. Killarney hosted the country’s largest motorcycle festival as Ireland Bike Fest rumbles into town from May 29-June 1. On May 23, there were celebrations at the Yes vote to marriage equality. Dick and Eileen Henggeler — the parents of the late Dorothy Henggeler, the 2011 Washington, DC Rose — Dorothy (Dott) who died in 2014 – succeeded in their bid to buy Fels Point Hotel, in Tralee, giving the Rose of Tralee festival its own headquarters.

June INTERNATIONAL headlines were sparked at the cancellation of Killarney Festival of Music & Food. The event had been due to host 36,000 people – 18,000 a day – at Killarney House Demesne. Over 300 walkers set their sights high as they stepped it out to step back in time in June. Modern-day druids, a goddess or two and fleet-footed set dancers were just some of the sights to greet them as climbers reached the ancient sacred summit the Paps of Danú after a torchlit trek to welcome the summer solstice as part of a three-day festival. Sun, smiles and a generous sprinkling of colour and can-do attitude were the hallmarks of the official start of the Killarney Advertiser-sponsored Killarney Looking Good competition in June, launched by Killarney Municipal District Area Manager. Killarney fire officer Paudie Mangan was travelling in style after acquiring a brand-new Harley-Davidson during the June bank holiday weekend. Paudie was one of 40,000 people to attend the eagerly anticipated Ireland Bike Fest and the Coolcorcoran man was the lucky winner of the “Win a Harley-Davidson®” raffle in aid of Muscular Dystrophy Ireland. The tantalising taste of some of Ireland’s most heavenly brews enticed over 2,000 craft beer aficionados to the INEC and Gleneagle Hotel for the first-ever Killarney Beerfest. THE streets were a riot of colour for the first weekend of July thanks to the dedicated volunteers who hung flags and placed decorations around the town in honour of a trio of major events US Independence Day, the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and the Munster Final. A carnival atmosphere at its best prevailed on Munster final day, with jubilation among Kerry fans as homegrown hero Fionn Fitzgerald kicked a dramatic last-gasp equaliser to ensure a replay in Killarney for the following week. In the replay, played in a downpour at Fitzgerald Stadium, Colm Cooper came off the bench to set up the crucial score of the game. Paul Geaney was on target and All-Ireland champions Kerry captured their 77th Munster SFC crown. The new mayor of Kerry, Councillor Pat McCarthy, Fine Gael, called on councillors to put party policies aside and co-operate to bring investment to the county. Fine Gael’s Cllr Bobby O’Connell was unanimously elected chairman of Killarney Municipal District. The hugely popular reality television show The Bachelorette brought Killarney and Kerry to an audience of several million viewers in the United States when it was aired in July. The four-star Randles Hotel was the host for the ABC romantic reality series. Excitement filled the town for the much-anticipated Gleneagle Run Killarney Marathon. There was a widespread appeal to find the arm that went missing from one of the Uncle Sam statues that formed part of the colourful street decorations for July 4. The arm was found a week later returned in Aghadoe Graveyard. The super-glamorous ladies day event concluded the four-day July festival and saw Edel Crowley, Kenmare, crowned Dawn Milk Queen of Fashion.

August LOCALS and visitors alike enjoyed a fun surprise in August as a flash mob whirled into action in town. The group of dancers gathered in memory of Killarney man Brendan Heffernan in a bid to raise funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation. Retail giant TK Maxx signed off in August on a deal to open its new outlet in Killarney with the creation of 60 jobs. Yellow fever swept the town as Killarney entered history and broke the world record with the largest gathering of people dressed up as movie favourites the Minions. The Minion Mania World Record Attempt took place in the INEC, organised by the South and East Kerry Community Track Group and Killarney Valley Athletic Club. There were sighs of relief and hugs of congratulations in classrooms across Kerry and Ireland in August as the muchanticipated Leaving Certificate results were revealed. The weather gods smiled on proceedings as Puck Fair attracted record crowds, with organisers estimating that over 100,000 visitors attended the festival over the three days. Hundreds of mourners gathered in St Mary’s Cathedral to pay heartfelt tributes to one of Killarney’s best-loved sons at the requiem Mass for Murt O’Shea. Murt, a former Fianna Fáil councillor and patron of Dr Crokes GAA Club, was laid to rest in Aghadoe after the Mass, which was led by parish administrator Fr Kieran O’Brien. A test of Olympian proportions awaited athletes who lined out for the Killarney Hardman Long Distance Triathlon. Kerry booked their place in this year’s All-Ireland senior and minor football finals following victories over Tyrone and Derry respectively.

September KERRY showed its colours as the county began its countdown to its double date in Croke Park for the All-Ireland senior and minor football finals. While there was heartbreak for the seniors as their hopes of backto-back All-Ireland titles were shattered by Dublin in the rain at Croke Park, the minors returned with the Tom Markham Cup. Two local charities, the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, were the beneficiaries of this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show. Adverse weather conditions meant that the event was postponed until the end of the month but the sun smiled on proceedings as they unfolded in Fleming’s Farm, Grenagh, Fossa. Well-known journalist and author Donal Hickey retired following more than four decades of service as a journalist. Almost 60 friends and colleagues gathered in the Killarney Plaza Hotel for a surprise party to mark the occasion in September. Killarney Athletic AFC marked its half-century of top-class contribution to the beautiful game in September. Club members, past and present, were out in force at a 50th anniversary celebratory dinner in The Dromhall Hotel. A gleaming convoy motored centre stage in Killarney as the Cannonball hit town. Soap stars Ryan Thomas from Coronation Street and Adam Thomas from Emmerdale were among those joining the 180-supercar spectacle. Gardaí were investigating an attack in which the retired Bishop of Kerry, Dr Bill Murphy, was assaulted while travelling with his brother on a train from Kerry to Dublin.

October A BUMPER crop of the signature red, white and orange TK Maxx shopping bags sprang up in Killarney in October shortly after the 10am grand opening of the designer retailer’s new store on Main Street. A queue formed an hour before Kerry football star Kieran Donaghy and stylist Annmarie O’Connor arrived to perform the official launch. Irish feature film The Gift premiered at Cinema Killarney during Kerry Film Festival. The Gift is the debut movie of OC Productions, Killarney, and raises awareness of grief and suicide. Charity champions set the wheels in motion to raise a record e1.89 million in this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and the grand total was unveiled to a packed Gleneagle Hotel ballroom at the presentation night in September. Gardaí launched a murder investigation into the death of Dmitry Hrynkevich (24), the third tallest man in Ireland standing at 7ft 6in (2.32m), after an attack at Killeen Wood, Tralee. Leading political figures were among the many people to pay tribute to former Kerry South TD and minister of state John O’Leary who passed away at the age of 82. Mr O’Leary represented Kerry South as a Fianna Fáil TD for 31 years, making him the longest-serving Dáil deputy for the constituency. Some 2,500 athletes competed in the ‘Quest Adventure’ Killarney Adventure Race in September. The colour purple was all the rage in Killarney as the town was lit up in style to celebrate retaining the coveted Purple Flag for a second year. The Purple Flag recognises excellence in evening and nighttime management of the economy and a safe and friendly environment from 5pm to 5am in which to live, socialise and work.

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL confirmed it would press ahead with controversial roadworks on the Muckross Road despite local opposition. Over 250 residents attended a public meeting to outline their opposition to the works, saying the narrowing of the road to 6.5m would lead to traffic chaos, particularly at the height of the tourist season. Although Killarney Legion put up a battle to the final whistle, Nemo Rangers seized the Munster club final spot in Páirc Ui Rinn. A well-known figure in Kerry and Ireland’s hospitality industry, Conor Hennigan announced that he was to depart from The Malton Hotel after 17 years at the helm as general manager. A large contingent from Fossa and Barleymount were out in force to give a resounding round of applause to this year’s Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award recipient Fr Sean Myers. The town of Killarney threw its weight behind the restoration of the railings at St Mary’s Church of Ireland as it launched the next phase of restoration works. The town learned it would be set for an exciting new attraction with the announcement of the development of the Irish Whiskey Experience and Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder on New Street. A gold medallist in this year’s Special Olympics World Games, Brendan O’Connell was the guest speaker at the ninth annual Kerry Stars black-tie ball at The Malton. Killarney drew to a standstill as the late Jackie O'Sullivan, 103, made his final journey. Jackie had planned his funeral with care and the cortege was led by a traditional horse-drawn hearse from St Mary’s Cathedral following the requiem Mass.

December THE first-ever Red Alert for rainfall was issued in the county as Storm Desmond lashed Kerry in early December. Evacuations became commonplace as flooding wreaked havoc across Kerry and Ireland throughout the month. Despite the weather, 80 hardy souls took the plunge at Dundag on Christmas morning in aid of depression support organisation Aware. Some 1,500 people packed the INEC in December for the Christmas in Killarney Tops of the Town, which was won by the Spa troupe. The spectacular memory tree project undertaken by Holy Cross Mercy National School was a heart-warming and thoughtprovoking feature for the 2015 season of goodwill. Rathmore retained the O’Donoghue Cup with an impressive victory over Killarney Legion in the East Kerry final at Fitzgerald Stadium. South Korean-born pianist Young-Choon Park and her local guests, singer Megan O’Neill from Kilcummin, and pianists Hannah Sherry from Glenflesk and Doireann O’Carroll, Tralee, dazzled the audience in the Franciscan Friary in a concert organised as part of the Christmas in Killarney Festival. There was an outpouring of concern for Archdeacon Michael Murphy who underwent surgery for injuries sustained when he was struck by a car. The incident took place at the junction of Beech Road and New Street. The people of Kerry were among the first in the world to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens when they were treated to a special preview screening in Cinema Killarney, in partnership with Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Disney and LucasFilm. Killarney concluded the year with sparkling New Year’s celebrations on December 31. The Christmas in Killarney festival organised a spectacular Magic parade for the family and Imelda May and Damien Dempsey rocked the INEC. 15.08.14 Killarney Advertiser 09.01.15

Strong Performances From Killarney And Tralee In Litter League THE final litter survey of 2015 by Irish Business Against Litter shows Killarney to be Cleaner than European Norms. Killarney is rated sixth among the 40 towns surveyed, while Tralee is “clean” in 17th. There was a slight fall-off in the number of litter-free towns across Ireland, but no towns were deemed “litter black spots” and only one was ‘seriously littered’. The winning town will be announced at a function at lunchtime in Buswells Hotel in Dublin. An Taisce's report for Killarney stated: “Some of the very good sites in Killarney included The Main Street and Plunkett Street, both of which had some very nicely presented premises. There was a complete absence of litter in the residential area of Friary Downs and the Car Park on College Street was very clean and tidy. However, the ‘heavily littered’ road to Tralee brought down the town’s ranking.” The report for Tralee stated that two “seriously littered sites” brought down Tralee’s ranking. The judges praised certain areas. “Some of the very good sites included Pairc an Piarsaig, Manor West Retail Park and Aqua Dome – these sites were not just clear of litter but very freshly presented and maintained,” they stated.

At the IBAL ceremony were Killarney representatives Angela McAllen, Killarney Municipal District manager, Councillor Michael Gleeson and Yvonne Quill, Killarney Tidy Towns chairperson, accepting the scroll from Conor Horgan, IBAL.

Drugs Recovered In Targeted Christmas Operation KILLARNEY GARDAÍ have confirmed that a number of addresses were searched in the town in the days leading up to Christmas as part of an operation targeting the illegal drugs trade. It is understood that five properties were searched and cannabis with an approximate street value of €2000 was seized. It is also understood that a specialist drugs dog was utilised by the Gardaí during this operation. “A number of people will face prosecutions arising from this operation and these targeted operations will continue in 2016,” said Killarney Superintendent Flor Murphy.

Home & away A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views Fr Another Alamo? A US sheriff has said the armed militia which has seized control of a federally owned nature reserve in Oregon wants to overthrow the government. The group began its occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns after they broke away from a peaceful protest against the conviction of a group of local ranchers for arson. “These men came to Harney County claiming to be part of militia groups supporting local ranchers, when in reality these men had alternative motives to attempt to overthrow the county and federal government in hopes to spark a movement across the United States” according to the Harney County Sheriff David Ward. The group is led by the Bundy family - originally from Nevada - who claim they are defending Dwight and Steven Hammond - a father and son who are due to return to prison on Monday after having had their convictions for arson increased by a Oregon judge. They were originally convicted for setting 100 acres of public land on fire in Oregon between 2001 and 2006 and were initially sentenced for three months and one year in jail respectively, but a judge reviewing the case said that was too lenient. The Hammonds said they were using the fires to reduce the growth of invasive plants and to protect their property from wildfires on the land they had leased from the government. The pair have said they did not support the aims of the militiamen and had nothing to do with the protest. The leader of the occupying group, Ammon Bundy - son of controversial anti-government rancher Cliven Bundy - said they were planning to stay on “for years”. In a Facebook video, Ammon and his brother Ryan said: “This will become a base place for patriots from all over the country to come to be housed and live here. We’re doing this for the people. We’re doing this so the people can have their land and their resources back where they belong. We’re calling people to come and stand. We need you to bring your arms and we need you to come to the Malheur National Wildlife refuge.”

Decisions, decisions... Staff at the Queen's Windsor Castle residence are not happy about the decision to move away from traditional eiderdowns and sheets in favour of duvets. It has been reported that the castle's managers have begun to make the shift despite the traditional bedspreads being long favoured in the guest bedrooms. One staff member: "They'll be putting chocolates on the pillows next." They added: "It’s rather old fashioned nowadays but many of those in the Royal Household believe that using sheets, blankets and eiderdowns is one of those traditions that should be retained." "It’s quite time consuming to make the beds up in this way but that’s why it is liked so much. It shows a certain attention to detail that people don’t tend to have nowadays but that the Royal Household prides itself on. "It’s been remarked on that it seems, well, a little like something that a hotel chain might do. And we are definitely not that. Fortunately we haven’t started putting on those

awful decorative cushions, though." Eiderdowns are flat quilts filled with down, typically sourced from the eider duck. They are layered with sheets, bedspreads and blankets, meaning that layers can be shed or added to control the temperature of the bed. Alexandra Messervy, founder of leading etiquette and household management consultancy The English Manner, who also previously worked for the Queen in the Master of the Household’s department, said that the choice was a uniquely personal one. "The jury is so divided on the issue. You are just as likely to go to a grand house or royal residence and find a duvet on the bed as you are to go to a very good hotel and find them still using sheets, blankets and eiderdowns. There is no hard and fast rule on it. It is very much a matter of personal preference,’ she told the paper. "Many like to use a duvet and throw a bedspread on it in order to retain that traditional look."

Wedding bells ring in New Year for Paul and Louise KERRY footballer Paul Galvin and Today FM presenter Louise Duffy rang in the New Year as newlyweds after they exchanged vows on New Year’s Eve. They tied the knot at St Tiernan’s Church in Crossmolina. Paul’s teammates from Lixnaw GAA Club, where he plays hurling, surprised the bride and groom with a Louise Duffy and Kerry footballer Paul Galvin. guard of honour as they emerged from the church. Police shoot man wielding knife in attack on Paris police station

A MAN was shot dead outside a police station in Paris. It is understood he tried to enter the station in Barbes brandishing a knife. Police described him as "threatening" and called on people to close windows and avoid balconies. A bomb disposal team was called in. The man was reportedly wearing an explosives belt. Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attacks.

Water, water everywhere... Water will flow where it must, that’s a fact. It will inevitably plot its own course. When Bandon floods, it’s because the River Bandon’s progress to the sea is impeded. Therefore, it will flood whenever the rainfall exceeds the river’s capacity to move the excess water towards Kinsale and the sea. Erecting flood defences is not the answer as they don’t remove water – they merely push it somewhere else. As anyone who is familiar with the stretch of water between Innishannon & Kinsale will tell you, silt is heaped high on the banks of the river and therein lies the root cause of the problem – the water’s progress to the sea is impeded. Dredging needs to be done and if the EU Water Framework Directive stops the dredging then it needs to be challenged and the excess water be allowed to run off quickly. It’s natural that the life of rivers involves growth of vegetation and the raising of river beds through the dropping of silt. Both hinder the flow of water, causing floods that in the natural order of events lead to new river channels. Water will go wherever it must. I assume that, over the years, rivers have been contained in their main existing channels through a combination of clearing the vegetation in rivers, dredging and reinforcement of river banks supported by controlled flooding of designated areas. But I live near the Blackwater and have never witnessed maintenance work of any kind being done. Sometimes the vegetation on one bank greets the vegetation on the opposite bank in the middle of the river. I’m sure that’s a common sight. This is actually pleasant to behold

in a meandering stream but a frightening sight in the middle of a flood as you know it’s going to make things worse. The impact of this lack of action is now being felt. River dredging and vegetation control is vital. After the flood, comes the insurance nightmare. The insurance sector has benefited from considerable support from the public purse through action over many decades by central and local government to reduce flood risk, improve roads, provide a competent fire service and generally improve infrastructure to protect and maintain public safety. I should hope that the insurance industry and the government act handin-glove to assemble information on flooding systematically but I am not sure this is the case. The Government needs to know in detail the costs of flood damage to people and property, and how these costs vary according to the characteristics of flooding and the types of households and businesses affected. It needs such data to make informed decisions about how much public money should be spent on managing flood risk in future, including support to the insurance sector to reduce otherwise “uninsurable” losses. The last thing businesses affected by the floods needed was a reminder from Revenue that VAT returns need to be filed and paid by January 14 but that’s what they got on New Year’s Day. They can then expect problems with their insurance companies. And they’ll tell you Ireland is the best little country in the world in which to do business. For some...

PAUL MCGINLEY led tributes to fellow Ryder Cup hero Christy O’Connor Junior, who passed away in Spain on Wednesday. The winning captain from the 2014 Ryder Cup said O'Connor was "a true Irishman, character and golfer". "I couldn’t believe the news when I heard it this morning, especially as just before Christmas I had a wonderful night out in Dublin with Christy and some of the older Irish pros – Des Smyth, Eamonn Darcy, Philip Walton, Jimmy Heggarty and Paddy McGuirk, as well as Ray Latchford who used to caddie for Christy and Des," McGinley said. “We had a great night - full of memories, full of stories and full of good old Irish craic and laughs, and it is the laughter and fun that I will remember most about Christy.

Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS around the world have started celebrating Christmas, which they marked on Thursday, in line with the Julian calendar. Communities from Europe to the Middle East were celebrating the day - each with their own unique traditions. In the Russian capital Moscow, the authorities expected 350,000 people to take part in Christmas liturgies. Other countries celebrated with firework displays, traditional log-burning ceremonies and processions.

AT THE December 2015 meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Gleeson asked that the council would clarify the situation for applicants for housing development in locations where Japanese knotweed is growing or has until recently been growing on the proposed site. Kerry County Council replied that in light of recent research, information and training associated with invasive introduced species, it is now considered opportune to attach a condition to planning permissions in relation to the control and eradication of such species including the Japanese knotweed. The condition will be included in the relevant planning decisions from early 2016. Councillor Gleeson welcomed the reply. “It is vitally important that intending house purchasers or builders should ensure that the site has been rendered totally free from all knotweed infestation,” said Cllr Gleeson. “This eradication process may require a multi-annual spraying procedure.”

This is part of Fáilte Ireland‘s national funding of just over €1.8 million for 23 key national festivals and events. Ireland BikeFest received €30,000 while Listowel Writers’ Week was granted €20,000. “There was a 14% increase in overseas visits to Ireland for the first eleven months of 2015 and the most recent figures show that revenue in the sector has increased by 16% to €4.2 billion. Photographed on Banna Beach on their wedding day, January 2, are newlyweds Claire Murrihy and John Glacken. The couple were married in Ardfert Church.

EVERY good wish to Killarney newlyweds Gemma Kavanagh, a former Kerry Rose, and John Cronin. Wedding bells rang out for the couple at a family celebration on December 21. Gemma, of Saint Anne’s Road, and John, from Mangerton Road, Muckross, were wed at Holy Trinity Abbey, Adare, on Monday, December 21. Helping them celebrate were their parents, Dr Domhnall and Paula Kavanagh and John and Lily Cronin. Fr Kieran O’Brien officiated at the ceremony, which took place on the

shortest day of the year, followed by a reception in Adare Manor. The groom’s niece Caoimhe McCarthy, 14 months, was the flower girl, having travelled all the way from Perth with her parents, Niamh and Patrick McCarthy. The bride’s nephew Tiarnán Kavanagh was pageboy. The couple, who got engaged on New Year’s Eve last year, will honeymoon in Sir Lanka. Gemma is practice manager at Torc Medical Practice and John is a solicitor with DTS, Killarney.

Fiona Crowley Stage School Students Take A Bow IT’S been a very busy season for the all-singing, all-dancing students of the Fiona Crowley Stage School. The hugely talented troupe took a well-deserved bow at Christmas following a whirl of activity. "The Fiona Crowley Stage School has had an astoundingly busy term this year and the wonderful students of the Stage School deserve to take a bow,” said Fiona Crowley. Over 65 students participated in their first musical theatre exams on November 28 and Fiona and her team couldn't be prouder. "All our students achieved a grade of 85% and over, we are just thrilled for them all as they worked so hard!" said Fiona. On that same day the students marched in the Christmas in Killarney

Magic parade. “Despite the weather the students sang, danced and smiled their way through the whole parade,” said Fiona. The following week the students showcased their work in their endof-term show which received rapturous applause and standing ovations. "We are ecstatic for all the students to have achieved so much in such a short space of time," said Fiona. "We are already looking forward to next term and our show in the new venue of the racecourse! We can't wait!" The students of the Fiona Crowley Stage School also enhanced the experience for all at the Muckross Christmas Magic event – even Santa was impressed!

Awards season for Michael Fassbender

HOME-GROWN Hollywood star Michael Fassbender was spotted out and about as he enjoyed a break in Killarney over Christmas before jetting Stateside to accept a coveted International Star Award at the 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala last Sunday. His co-star in the movie Steve Jobs, Kate Winslet, presented Michael with the prestigious award. The Killarney star spent the festive season at home in his native Fossa, where his parents Adele and Josef live. We wish him all the best as he takes centre stage at another glittering awards ceremony this weekend. Michael’s dazzling turn as the Apple co-founder and CEO, has also led to his nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role, Drama, in this Sunday’s Golden Globes. The in-demand star has been shooting actioner Assassin’s Creed with his Macbeth director Justin Kurzel in the UK.

O’Shea takes the helm at Crokes Mia, Amy, Nicola and Julia at their end-of-term showcase with the Fiona Crowley Stage School.

Saoirse Casey, Caroline Casey and Brendan Casey preparing for their musical theatre exams.

FORMER Dr Crokes and Kerry player and manager Pat O’Shea returns to the helm at Dr Crokes for the 2016 season. Pat was the star forward in the county championship-winning teams of 1991 and 2000 as well as the All-Ireland winning 1992 team and played for Kerry those years also. He managed the team from 2004-2007 contesting two county finals and an All-Ireland club final. Pat managed Kerry in a successful All-Ireland campaign in 2007 and lost narrowly in the 2008 final. Pat works as the Munster Coaching and Games Manager for Football. Meanwhile, Kilcummin has confirmed the

appointment of Martin Horgan as incoming manager and thanked Seanie O’Leary and his management team for their effort over the past three years. Martin is games development administrator with Kerry GAA.

Mountain Rescue Team Urges Walkers To Heed Storm Alerts THE Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was called to the rescue of a walker who sustained an injury while descending from Corrán Tuathail last Tuesday, December 29. The walker was among a group of four who had been hiking in the area that morning. The fall occurred in the Hags Glen, between Lough Gouragh and the base of the Hags Tooth Ridge. The walker's friends raised the alarm at 2.30pm and Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was tasked to the incident. The walker, an Irish male in his early 30s, was treated at the scene for a suspected leg break and was stretchered down the mountain before being brought to the nearest road, where he was transferred

56

Killarney Advertiser 08.01.16

to an ambulance at approximately 5.30pm. He was then brought to Kerry General Hospital for further medical treatment. “Conditions on the mountain were extremely hazardous at the time of the incident with strong gusts and heavy rain around the Reeks. Twenty members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the rescue,” said Colm Burke of KMRT. “Kerry Mountain Rescue Team would urge people to take serious heed of all weather warnings, and to avoid the mountains at this time. Extreme caution is also advised on low level walks and trails near watercourses, as the majority of rivers and lakes are currently in flood.”

WOODLAWN man Joe McCarthy took a bow last week as he was awarded the coveted Club Person of the Year gong at the Killarney & District Motor Club awards night. Joe was presented with his award by club chairman Diarmuid Cronin. He was honoured for his work as club safety officer, rally equipment manager and for his long-time dedication and passion for motorsport in the club. “Competitors, marshals, organisers and anyone that helped out or were involved in any way throughout the year were invited and about 200 people showed up on the night,” said PRO Johnny Hickey. Robert Duggan (Aghadoe) this year’s Billy Coleman Award winner for Best Young Rally Driver of the Year and co-driver Noel O'Sullivan Jnr (Muckross) were acknowledged for their achievements on the national, international and world stage, representing their club at the highest level of the sport. Chairman Diarmuid addressed the gathering, highlighting how proud the club was of Paul Nagle's success and how much of an inspiration he is to the younger club members. "Next year it looks very promising as we will have at least four members of the club competing in rounds of the World Rally Championship,” said Diarmuid. A special recognition award was given to motorsport photographer Ted O'Connell (Macroom) for his continued support. A special dedicated member award was given to Paddy Hayes (Ballaugh Killarney) for his willingness to help out at any hour, on any event, in any conditions. Both clerks of the course for the Autotest Todd Falvey (Rathmore) and Autocross Denis Nagle (Gneeveguilla) events were presented with two handcrafted clocks. A special presentation was made to Noreen Marshall, acknowledging her service to the club as membership secretary since the club was first founded in 1977. Novelty prizes were given out on the night for best male and female Christmas-themed outfits and the winners were Denis Walsh (Mastergeeha) and Joanne McCarthy (Kenmare). The organisers of the night Diarmuid Lynch, Jason O'Brien and Johnny Hickey thanked the Killarney Oaks Hotel for hosting the event.

Tributes Paid As Kerry Footballer Patrick Curtin Laid To Rest THE Church of the Assumption in Moyvane overflowed as more than 1,000 people gathered to say a final farewell to Patrick (Paddy) Curtin at his requiem Mass last Sunday. The former intercounty footballer was killed last month in a car crash in Guatemala. The 26-year-old electrician worked at the Liebherr Ireland crane factory in Killarney and he frequently worked abroad with the company. Cullina Pupils Head Back To The Classroom A WHISTLE-STOP trip back in time was on the agenda in the Beaufort area recently as past pupils of Cullina National School organised a reunion to mark the 30th anniversary of their departure from primary school. The sixth class of 1985 gath-

ered at Kate Kearney’s Cottage for the event, with 19 out of the class of 30 marked present on the roll book. “Many of us are still living in the Beaufort area – people from Beaufort don’t like to leave it!” said Claire Doyle, one of the organisers of the

reunion. Two of the past pupils made the trip from overseas, one from Chicago and another from London. “We had a fabulous night, with music, a few nibbles and a cake,” said Claire.

Step it out to support Mary’s mission of mercy HERE’S a reminder that you will have the chance to dance the night away tonight in aid of a very good cause. Mary O’Leary, Killarney, is to travel to Nepal next summer to volunteer as part of the Umbrella Foundation project to help schools recover from the devastating earthquake that struck in April. Mary, a pre-school leader at Naionra Faithleann, honeymooned in the country over two decades ago and will return to spend six weeks working in communities there. “After news of the earthquake broke last April, I decided I had to do something to help,” she said. Nepal’s most vulnerable people were left struggling to rebuild their lives last April and Mary will help in the education sector there when she travels there in July.

Mary O’Leary.

She has decided to use her birthday (which has a zero in it) to raise funds for the schools in Nepal. “No presents, just please come and support the cause,” she said. The event takes place in the Gleneagle Ballroom tonight, Friday, January 8, at 8.30pm. Tickets, €10, are available at the door, as well as at O’Leary’s Expert Electrical, Plunkett, Street, and from Mary, 0860628461.

9th anniversary Carroll Birthday remembrance of Conor Spellman late of Ballycasheen, Killarney whose 35th birthday occurred on the 7th January.

In loving memory of Con Carroll late of Kilbrean Beg Killarney who died on the 11th of January 2007. Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same, All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again. A light is from our household gone, A voice we loved is still, A place is vacant in our home, That never can be filled. The happy hours we once enjoyed, How sweet their memory still, But death has left a vacant place, This world can never fill. How dearly we loved you, And prayed you might live, But Jesus just called, And we had to give. Our family chain is broken, Nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one The links shall join again. Sadly missed by your son Denis, Elaine, Anthony, Con and Amy.

Birthday wishes we send today, To a star in the sky, Not far away. Engraved in gold on a cloud above, Just for Dad with all my love. Love Hollie and Fionn xxx

Life’s many struggles and strifes we always got through, Only because of the Faith & Belief God gave you. A deep sense of love and comfort envelops my heart, Hoping that we’ll meet again, never more to be apart. Miss you more than words could ever express.

Muckross Rowing Club

HAPPY NEW YEAR Happy New Year all! We hope you enjoyed a great Christmas. Training resumed at the normal times this week in the Muckross Community Centre and will continue at the boathouse or centre this weekend, weather permitting. Over a wet and windy Christmas period, the best was made of the bad conditions. While the boathouse was flooded for much of the time, a big highlight was the visit of Team GB rowers Sam Townsend and Sophie Hosking along with our own Olympic hero Sean Casey, who joined our junior members for a training session at the Community Centre. On New Year’s Eve, Sam and Sophie joined a brave contingent of Muckross members who completed a run and walk outing from Derrycunnihy to Muckross. REGISTRATION MORNING Club membership and Rowing Ireland registration fees are now overdue. For those who missed our last Registration Day, we are holding another registra-

tion morning this Saturday 9th January from 9.30-10.30am at the Muckross Community Centre. Our first outdoor rowing event for 2016 will be Cork Head Of the River on Saturday 6th February. To ensure rowers are eligible and registered for this event, we would ask that all members make a special effort to complete membership and registration this Saturday. Junior members must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign membership forms. Membership fees are posted in the Community Centre and further details are available on our Facebook page facebook.com/muckrossrc. EVENTS The Indoor Rowing Championships take place in UL on Saturday 23rd January. Cork Head Of the River will take place at the Marina in Cork city on Saturday 6th February. Following the cancellation of our own Muckross Head Of the River in December, the club is currently seeking permission from Rowing Ireland for a rescheduled date in March 2016.

Contact Mary Lyne 086-6485809 or Mags O’Neill on 087 6451913 for enquiries. 40th Anniversary Commemorations Our Club has a big birthday when it turns 40 this year. To help mark the occasion and to preserve our history for future Killarney Celtic generations, we will shortly be compiling a Digital Archive of club photos, news reports, memorabilia etc. That will require current and past members to rummage out whatever you might have in display cases, old biscuit tins and photo albums. We’ll be publishing more details here and via the press on the project and how you can get us your materials (and get them safely back). Results Denny Premier: Killarney Celtic 2 Camp United 0 Hard graft and a very solid display by Celtic, who dictated the play throught despite a gallant battle by Camp. A great overall display. Denny Div One: Classic FC 2 Killarney Celtic 0 A very understrength Celtic produced a brilliantly defiant performance and were actually holding a strong Classic to 0-0 at half-time, but fell just short over the full ninety minutes. Nonetheless a great display. U17 League: Killarney Celtic 2 Ballyhar Dynamos 3

316 net new jobs in Enterprise Ireland companies in Kerry THERE has been a warm welcome for official figures from Enterprise Ireland (EI) confirming that additional jobs were created by EI-supported companies in Kerry during 2015. Some 316 additional new jobs have come on-stream over the past 12 months. Welcoming the news, Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin said: “In Kerry, 4,678 people are employed in the 117 companies supported by the Department of Jobs, through Enterprise Ireland. “These companies created 316 additional new jobs in Kerry in 2015, an increase of 7% on the previous year. This job creation is having an important knock-on impact, he added. “For every job created in an EI supported company, it is estimated that one additional job is created elsewhere in the economy, so approximately 1,700 new jobs have been created through EI companies alone in Kerry since the Government was elected,” said Deputy Griffin. "Other indicators also show that the economic recovery has firmly tak-

en hold in Kerry, with the Kerry Live Register halfway back to boom time rates. The drop in the live register by approximately 6,000 in Kerry is one of the highest in the country and is now clearly evident on the ground in the form of increased commercial traffic on roads, busier shops and busier streets.” Positive signs such as the huge jump in new car sales and commercial vehicle sales in Kerry all point to people having the money and confidence to spend and invest in the future, added Deputy Griffin. "We have come a long way in Kerry and Ireland in the last five years and we still have a way to go. The key thing now is to keep the progress going so that every household will clearly feel the benefits of the recovery,” he said. "The economic plan of the current government is working and I am hopeful we will be given the opportunity to finish the job and ensure a better life for every single family in Kerry and Ireland."

‘Scandalous’ wait for orthodontic treatment THE time it takes for a patient to bee seen for orthodontic and dental services in Kerry has been branded as “scandalous” by Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae. As of October 1, the priority waiting list has 150 patients on it, he said. “These patients include those who require growth modification and are usually seen with six months to two-and-a-half years,” said the independent TD. “The situation for people on the routine list is far worse and this list currently takes five years for a person to be seen.” Deputy Healy-Rae said it was a scandal that young people in particular would have to wait so long during their formative years to have necessary orthodontic and dental services carried out. 2015 a sum of €1 million has been allocated for a National Waiting list initiative and currently his initiative is at a tendering stage and is expected to be completed shortly. “Minister Varadkar will have to take a hands on approach in dealing with this matter and has condemned the Minister for allowing this situation to continue,” said Deputy Healy-Rae.

Rambling house in Fossa TOES will be tapping thanks at the Fossa/Two Mile Comhaltas Rambling House this Saturday night. The fun begins at 8.30pm in the Killarney Valley Hotel in Fossa. A great night of music, song, dance and storytelling is promised and tea and barmbrack will be served. All are welcome.

on the ball

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

What’s another year? Sports editor Eamonn Fitzgerald welcomes readers of On the Ball for 2016 and takes a look at the hopes of players and management of the various sports for the New Year

WELCOME to all readers of On the Ball for 2016. What are the hopes of players and management of the various sports for the New Year? 2014 was good for Kerry seniors winning the All Ireland; 2015 was disappointing conceding to the Dubs. Talks of retirements occupied the minds of supporters. Most people suggested that Aidan O’Mahony, Colm Cooper and Marc Ó Sé would call it a day after many years of excellence in the green and gold. Paul Galvin has gone and I expect the other trio to stay on. Marc Ó Sé is “i gcás idir dhá chomhairle”. He may go. Jack O’Connor did the two-in-a-row with the minors and now goes on to the under-21s. On the club front Rathmore were the best team I saw in the county and were good enough to win the Kerry SFC. That will be their target for 2016 and Legion are very close to getting over the same line, while Crokes had a poor year and will look to 2016 to recapture former glory. Spa have some good players just out of minor and have good potential. It was a great year for soccer fans with the late qualification of the Irish team and that wonderful success of the Kerry team in the prestigious Kennedy Cup. It is just reward for the great work done over the years by the clubs. Henry Shefflin: The Autobiography Book Review by Eamonn Fitzgerald, Sports Editor Henry Shefflin, holder of a record 10 SHC medals with Kilkenny, 11 All Stars, 3 All Ireland club medals with Ballyhale Shamrocks and a host of other accolades, comes to life with the publication of Henry Shefflin, The autobiography. It presents the public face

Senior Championship Final Re-Fixture (Michael O’Connor Memorial Cup) Sunday January 17th at 2pm holders Milltown/ Castlemaine play Glenbeigh/Glencar in J P O’Sullivan Park Killorglin (replay in the event of a draw). of King Henry, the best hurler for the past 16 years. This publication covers all that, but it also gives the readers an insight in to his private life, the family man, the father of four young children married to Deirdre. We read of this man working so hard building the new house and then heading off for training with club or county. When we see sports people in action and they play a very poor game, we criticise them, without making due allowances for what may be happening in their private lives. He suffered more than his share of injuries, particularly the cruciate. There were the operations, the rehabilitation, where his dogged determination kept him going and where others would give up. These were lonely times in the gyms, but he stuck with them. His pride in his local club provides him with the most cherished memories. This small little area was his heart and soul. ”My earliest dreams had all centred on winning things with Shamrocks, not Kilkenny. Finally, those dreams were fulfilled.” There was something special about playing and winning with his club. “I’ve heard a county man saying that winning with your club is different. It’s a cliché, but it’s true”. Brian Cody Playing with Kilkenny for so long he deals with his relationship with Brian Cody. The latter is the most successful GAA manager of all time, ruthless when he had to be, but utterly focussed. His greatness as a manager “comes from his ability to always create the right environment, says Shefflin... “Bottom line, I am massively indebt-

ed to him for my success as a hurler, just as I imagine, he feels indebted to me for his success as a hurler.” The inevitable thoughts of retiring were on his mind. Should I and when? The inevitability of it all, and it was not easy going out on a high after winning his record breaking 10th All Ireland with Kilkenny. Rumours were rife about the expected announcement. He found it so hard to decide. It all went back to the club. Ballyhale Shamrocks were still in the All Ireland club series. He kept dodging around his inevitable retirement, but eventually did make the decision after consultations with his wife Deirdre and with Cody. Through it all the humility of Henry Shefflin shines through. He has plenty to boast about , but his family commitments, all those injuries, the long and lonely rehab programmes, combine to give a fascinating insight by Vincent Hogan in to the best hurler of our time ,if not all time. Henry Shefflin: The Autobiography is published by Penguin Ireland and is available in Eason, Killarney. A Season of Sundays 2015 Nineteen years on the go now and A Season of Sundays 2015 continues to provide a pictorial a le carte menu capturing the essence of the GAA games over the past year. The winning formula has been the same throughout the years, splendid photographs captured by the Sports file photographers featuring the highs and lows of GAA games. There are also can be kept in the club. There are fourteen prizes in all and they are as follows: 1st prize An Opel Corsa, 2nd - 8th are All Ireland Final packages in Hurling or Football for two people with overnight accommodation and evening meal, 9thand 10th are Shopping Vouchers valued €1,000 each, 11th- 14th are All Ireland packages again for two people with overnight accommodation and evening meal. Tickets can be had from any officer or player at a cost of €10each and any ticket purchased will help the club to raise much needed

the shots of empty stadia except for the Gardaí, caretakers, grounds men and two young Ballyhale Shamrocks fans. Lovely picture of Cusack Park steward Seamus Mcloughlin all alone picking up the litter. Three mature gentlemen studying the form from the programme. They are all wrapped up for the February 15th weather conditions. All-Ireland senior football and hurling champions Dublin and Kilkenny are in celebratory mood well captured in the Kilkenny dressing room. Their kit man adds a nice touch by placing the streamers on the victors. One more for Cody, one more for Kilkenny. The front cover is singing in the rain for the Dubs after beating Kerry. Meanwhile in the Dubs dressing room there is unbridled joy in their final on September 15. This is in sharp contrast to the same match of the much tattooed arms of a dejected Paul Galvin. His eyes tells it all, his last final fling in Croker, but no joy, no fairy tale ending. Kerry players in action get their fair share of coverage .Ladies football and camogie are well catered for. My own favourite picture is on pages 92 and 93, where Limerick goalkeeper Barry Hennessy clashes with Seamus Callanan. The latter’s helmet flattens his nose but most telling of all is that the photographer got in close showing the readers how teeth or bits of teeth are knocked out. His face looks a mess, but hurlers are made of steel. Blood and airborne teeth. Take him off. Yes, but only for running repairs. Callanan returned to the fray; the heroism of Cuchulainn 2015 came to mind. Ray McManus and his team did a great job, as usual, with suitable captions by Alan Milton. A Season of Sundays is published by Sportsfile and is available in Easons, Killarney. Paddy Curtin, RIP The death of Paddy Curtin, former Kerry footballer shocked us all. He represented Kerry in all grades. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam.

Larry and Sean Kelly, while the remainder of the team were hosted by various Kilcummin related families around New York. The O’Connor family were wonderful hosts, during the teams stay in New York with a few parties held in their home in the Bronx. The Kilcummin GAA Club and the Team of 1974 extend their sympathy to the O’Connor family and their Kilcummin relations. Ár Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis. Mastergeeha FC

Ballyhar 7 Mastergeeha 2 In the first game of the year the boys were beaten by league leaders Ballyhar. The home side started well and were 3-0 up within 20 minutes. Mastergeeha played some good soccer at times and fought back when Philip O’Leary scored just before the break. Darragh Cashman rattled the crossbar from 20 yards early in the 2nd half but Ballyhar rallied with further goals to seal the points. Darren Lehane scored a cracker following good work from Ian O’Connor but it was a mere consolation goal and the lads can now focus on the race for runner up spot. LOTTO There was no winner on Sunday 27th December 2015. Numbers drawn were 15, 17, 18, 22. There was no winner on Saturday 2nd January 2015. Numbers drawn were 10, 18, 20, 24. Jackpot now €3,750.
