Basic examples we are used to are: electricity, water, phone, etc. Many services can now be accessed online, on your phone or tablet. However, each of these requires an online account. To set up an online account for any service, you will need the following: 1) Registered email address; 2) Password and 3) Username (often your email address). Once you have these items - you can register for the service you would like to use. This usually requires going

Killarney family urges community to support Temple Street hospital By Eve Kelliher KILLARNEY couple Teresa and Stephen O’Mahony had always hoped to have a little girl and when Alexis was born 10 months ago they were overjoyed. Their daughter wins hearts everywhere she goes. Alexis has a smile that lights up the room – yet belies the fact that she and her parents face many battles every day. “Exactly one year ago to the day Teresa and I were told all was not right with our pregnancy. Four months ago Alexis eventually got her primary diagnosis of pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency which had up until then and continues to cause many other serious and dangerous problems for her,” said Stephen. This condition, which is quite rare, means Alexis’s body cannot break down food and it can also lead to life-threatening complications. “We don’t know what the future holds, it’s about living in the ‘now’,” said Stephen. Alexis needs to spend a considerable of time every month at the National Centre for Inherited Metabolic Disorders (also known as the national metabolic unit) at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital in Dublin. “There we witness the first hand dedication, love and vital care provided to seriously ill children on a 24-hour basis,” said Teresa. Now the family wants to help support the national metabolic unit at Temple Street and the associated St Brigid’s ward in the hospital. “To give a little back we have organised a coffee morning at the Killarney Royal Hotel on Friday,

February 24, from 9-11.30am,” said Stephen. “There will also be a raffle with lots of fantastic prizes on the day. All donations go towards equipment, care and research at the national metabolic unit and the associated St Bridget’s ward.”
EDITOR'S VIEW A lesson in ‘living in the now’ WE ARE all so used to the concept of “positive thinking”, the words have become part of common, almost hackneyed, parlance over the past couple of decades – and particularly in more recent, mindfulness-infused, times. Maybe it’s just me, but until this week I don’t think I’d ever really heard the words uttered in a meaningful way. That changed on Tuesday shortly after meeting Teresa and Stephen O’Mahony and their beautiful daughter Alexis (see story above). The manner in which the couple talk sincerely about how “living in the now” is so important really struck a chord. As little Alexis battles a serious and rare medical condition, her parents’ can-do, positive attitude is breathtakingly impressive. And even though the couple rise admirably to the enormous challenges of caring for their little girl and attending lengthy hospital appointments in Dublin’s Temple
Street as well as in Cork, they still find the space in the hearts to want to give something back. They are pitching huge efforts into generating support for the national metabolic unit at Temple Street and their coffee morning in the Killarney Royal Hotel takes place next Friday, February 24. In other news this week, we report on how Killarney man Eric Lynch was unveiled as the successful applicant for the first jarvey licence to be advertised in Killarney in years. Such was the demand that the winning applicant was dawn by lot and excitement reached fever pitch in recent weeks with over 66 applications received. See our extensive sports coverage on Dr Crokes’ impressive win in the All-Ireland club football semi-final last weekend as they booked their place in the final in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day. AGSI conference on its way to Killarney THE 39th annual delegate conference organised by the Association of Garda Sergeants & Inspectors is on its way to Killarney this April. The event, which will unfold from April 10-12, will take place in The Brehon and Killarney Convention Centre. “This is a prestigious conference and will bring valuable business to the town over the course of three or four days,” said Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Paul O’Neill. Over 200 delegates and guests are expected at the event, which took place Westport, Co Mayo, last year. A total of 130 delegates from around the country will attend, representing over 2,100 sergeants and inspectors. The conference is also attended by up to 40 federal delegates from around Europe, senior Garda and Department of Justice managements and representatives from other representative associations within the Garda organisation and the Defence Forces. The official opening is scheduled for 5pm on Monday, April 10. Businesses in Killarney are also invited to exhibit at the conference. Question What are the rules about buying a car in the UK and bringing it back to Ireland? Answer In general, all vehicles brought into Ireland are subject to Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and must be registered. If you have imported a vehicle, you must pay VRT and receive the vehicle's registration certificate showing that you have paid VRT. If you live abroad and are moving to live in Ireland, you may be eligible for a VRT exemption. Even if you are not required to pay VRT, you must still register your vehicle when you move to Ireland. In certain cases, foreign-registered vehicles may be imported into Ireland temporarily by a non-resident without the requirement to pay VRT or register the vehicle. You register the car and pay the VRT at a National Car Testing Service (NCTS) centre. You can get an estimate of the VRT due from the Revenue Vehicle Registration Online Enquiry System. When you register and pay the VRT, a registration number will be assigned to your car. You can obtain vehicle registration plates from the NCTS centre or from any motor factor. If you are importing a new car from another EU state, you have to pay VAT (Value Added Tax), usually when registering the car. If you are importing a new or second- hand car from outside the EU, VAT (and customs duty) is payable. Eric takes the reins as he receives first jarvey licence to be advertised in generations AFTER dozens of people applied for the first jarvey licence to be advertised in Killarney in years, Eric Lynch has taken the reins as the successful applicant. Eric, from Ardshanavooley Estate, Killarney, was the lucky winner drawn from 66 applications, and is pictured here with his grandfather Councillor Donal Grady. This was the first hackney horse and carriage licence to have been publicly advertised in generations and such was the level of interest that the successful applicant was drawn by lot. Some 66 applications were deemed “valid” and the opportunity to drive a horse and carriage for hire to Ross Castle and down by Lough Léin for an annual licence fee of €65 was offered to the first name drawn. The single licence is one of just 37 Killarney town jarvey licences.

IMPORTANCE OF ORGAN DONATION HIGHLIGHTED AS TRIBUTES PAID TO DENIS TRIBUTES were paid this week to the late Denis Breen of Hazelwood Drive, Killarney, and late of Knocklebede, Kilcummin, who passed away on Friday after battling kidney disease. Denis, beloved husband of Sheila and loving father of Michael, Denis, Sheila-Mary, Billy and the late David and Kevin, is mourned by his family and wide circle of friends. His family, including his son Denis Junior, had in recent months highlighted to the public the importance of organ donation and the work of the Irish Kidney Association. At the requiem Mass on Tuesday, in St Mary’s Cathedral, celebrant Fr Kieran O’Brien said: “We all remember 2010 when David and Kevin were involved in a fatal accident, to lose two sons and two brothers for the Breen family was tragic, how do you cope?” He added: “Denis always spoke fondly of his two boys, and we all know time is a great healer and

just as the family were coping with this loss, they were dealt another blow; Denis was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, kidney failure, which would require dialysis treatment a few times a week, and we would have seen over the last few months at how the family promoted the importance of organ donation and I am sure will
continue this message. “We were all brought up to help others and to give of yourself and what better way to do so than the by donating of organs. Donors and their families must be admired, that in the shadow of their own grief, they are helping others, maybe not only saving one life but many lives.”
New community hospital for Killarney by 2021 NEWS that the town is to receive a new community hospital in the next four years has been welcomed. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has been in contact with the Minister responsible for the Elderly Helen McEntee this week and confirmed that Killarney is due to receive a new Community

Hospital by 2021. The capital programme announced earlier this year provides for the replacement and refurbishment of 90 nursing homes across the country over the next 5 years. Under this programme it is proposed to deliver a new community Hospital Unit in Killarney

‘The people of Kerry and services users deserve better treatment than this’
Industrial action looming over Deer Lodge in Killarney By Eve Kelliher
SIPTU has called on the Minister for Health to immediately investigate why two newly built, state-of-the-art buildings in the Kerry Mental Health Services area have been lying idle for the past two years. These include the forty-bed purpose-built Deer Lodge in Killarney and a four-bed intensive care unit for mental health in Kerry University Hospital. Deer Lodge will accommodate those presently resident in the O’Connor unit at the rear of St Finan’s Hospital as well as providing 10 beds for rehabilitation purposes. “The HSE has committed millions of euro to providing these buildings, which are necessary to deliver a progressive and modern mental health service in Kerry,” said Donie Doody, Killarney, branch organiser, SIPTU. “However the HSE is undermining its own positive work by continuing to delay the opening of these buildings and allowing patients to remain in old dilapidated buildings which are no longer fit for purpose.” In addition, hundreds of thousands of euro has been spent preparing residents in Cluain Fionnain, an intellectual disability unit in Killarney, for transfer into residences in the community, added Mr Doody. All staff presently employed by the HSE in Cluain Fionnain should be deployed back into the mental health services, according to SIPTU. “Nurses presently employed in Cluain Fhionnain are mental health nurses and are anxious to return to the mental health services,” said Mr Doody. SIPTU has issued a deadline of May 31, 2017, by which time it wants its members re-deployed. “It is our plan that the redeployed nurses be used to staff the two new buildings currently lying idle,” said the SIPTU branch manager. “In the long-term this will save the HSE thousands of euro, provide an enhanced service to the people of Kerry and better facilities to service users accommodated in the new buildings. In the event that our deadline of May 31, 2017, is not honoured by the HSE, SIPTU has no option but to ballot its members for industrial action. “The people of Kerry and the services users deserve better treatment than this. It is appalling that the facilities we have waited so long for, now built, lie idle and still outside the grasp of those who need them most.”

Killarney Advertiser sheds new light on going green ST PATRICK’S DAY might be a month away yet, but Killarney Advertiser is already going green. The company reviewed its waste and energy in 2016 and implemented a new waste management plan, and this week it has shed new light – literally – on the eco-friendly direction it is taking. “Last October we reviewed our lighting in conjunction with Aidan Kennedy Electrical,” said general manager Aidan Quirke. “Our fluorescent lights were giving us trouble and the decision was made to implement new LED panels which have a much lower energy consumption. Aidan Kennedy took us through the options and we settled on LED panels. Whilst being better for the environment it also saved the company €1,000 a year on electricity.” The investment will pay for itself over two years, added Aidan. “Once we reviewed the figures and the savings on electricity, it was easy to make the investment to go green,” he said. “The lighting is much better than what we had and Aidan Kennedy ensured that we under- Aidan Quirke, general manager, Killarney Advertiser, pictured holding one of the old fluorescent light fixtures after stood the savings and payback on investment.” Killarney Advertiser replaced its lights with an eco-friendly LED system.

Paul O'Donoghue of the Glenflesk Men's Choir and Ollie Favier of The Shire presented a cheque for the above amount, the proceeds of the Glenflesk Choir Christmas Carol Singing and also The Shire Christmas Hat Appeal, to the Kerry Stars recently.

Talented James in the picture with dream win BIG congratulations to talented Killarney artist James O’Shea whose eye-catching painting was selected from among 30,000 entries received across Ireland for one of the country’s biggest art competitions. The Killarney man stepped centre stage at Croke Park on Sunday to receive his runner-up prize in the art contest, run by the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU). Among those paying tribute to James was broadcasting legend Marty Whelan who was master of ceremonies. James, who was one of those entering the competition from Kerry Parents and Friends Association, was one of six national winners chosen from Kerry. The All-Ireland art competition, now in its 33rd year, was organised throughout 300 credit unions with 33 national winners picked at the final stage of the competition. This year’s theme ‘Dreams are made of this….’ was open to interpretation by each entrant.

The judges for this year’s competition were, Una Sealy, RHA Gallery and RTÉ’s Painting the Nation, Ursula Retzlaff O’Connell, artist, and John Walsh, creative director, Focus Advertising. Speaking at the awards ceremony, ILCU president Brian McCrory said: “I am greatly impressed by the quality of the artwork on display at Croke Park today, and it has been very compelling to see how uniquely each of the artists interpreted the theme of Dreams. I would like to extend a huge congratulations to each and every artist that participated.” Joy Clifford-Vaughan, youth officer, Killarney Credit Union, said: “We would like to congratulate James O’Shea for his achievement as runnerup in the Adult Special Category. We always have a great submission from Kerry Parents and Friends and hope that encourages more to participate in next year’s competition.” The six winners received cash prizes and each winning entry will have their artwork featured in the Credit Union’s 2018 national calendar.

THE Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle has raised more than €11.9 million to date and this week announced its 10 beneficiary charities for 2017. This event, which takes place on Saturday, July 1, will set the wheels in motion to generate cash for Talbot Grove, Derrynane Inshore Rescue, Temple Street Foundation, Buy A Bus Campaign for Kerry Parents & Friends Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, Kerry Rape & Sexual Abuse Centre, Camphill Community Dingle, Recovery Haven Kerry, Rathmore Social Action Group and Valentia Hospital. Registration for the 2017 Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle will open at 7am on Saturday, February 25, via www.ringofkerrycycle.ie Now in its 34th year, the event is the biggest one-day charity fundraising event in Ireland and attracts over 10,000 leisure cyclists, completing the 112-mile challenge. Registration will open on February 25. There will be 10,000 spaces available and as part of the registration process all participants will be required to select one
of the 10 main beneficiary charities, to cycle for. Each charity will be allocated 1,000 cyclists and when the allocated spaces for a charity are full - registrants will be have the option to select another charity which has availability. “There will be no lottery system this year, and registrations will be taken on a first come first served basis. The 2017 process has evolved to provide a smoother process for cyclists and fundraisers to engage with,” said Cathal. The basic donation for 2017 is €100 plus a 3.5% service fee. Cyclists will have the option to make additional donations or fundraise for their chosen charity and can additionally request a sponsorship card or set up an online fundraising page with Everyday Hero to facilitate their own fundraising journey.
Mayor welcomes windfall for Killarney Cultural Centre THE cathaoirleach of Killarney Councillor Brendan Cronin has welcomed a grant allocation of over €120,000 for Killarney Cultural Centre. This is part of a rollout of capital funding of more than €9m for arts and cultural centres across Ireland announced by the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys today. Minister Humphreys made the announcement as part of the
Creative Ireland programme, with funding provided under her Department’s Arts and Culture Capital Scheme 2016-2018. Killarney Cultural Centre, under the auspices of Kerry County Council, has received €120,320. A total of 56 cultural organisations will benefit from this capital investment, including theatres, heritage centres, galleries, archives, integrated arts centres, artist studios and creative and performance spaces. KILLARNEY IS A SPORT AND LEISURE PARADISE IN KILLARNEY we are gifted with facilities unmatched to any other place in the world. The National Park is a sports and leisure paradise equiped with lakes, mountains, trails and pathways. The Lakes of Killarney are a luxury allowing several rowing clubs to run and thrive – a sport that many inland communities can’t participate in. WILD ATLANTIC WAY TO TELL ITS STORIES FÁILTE IRELAND this announced the installation of 30 new engaging interpretation panels at all of its Discovery Points along the Wild Atlantic Way in County Kerry. The panels are situated at local spots such as Skelligs View and Inch Strand - featuring local stories chosen as a direct result of local consultation and engagement with local historians, heritage officers and other local experts. The installation of the panels is part of a wider initiative to bring local stories to life all across the route. IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE? Today the variety of exoplanets discovered is immense and ranges from large hot balls of gas to smaller rocky worlds, says Trevor O’Donoghue WHEN I was in secondary school, the first few pages of my geography book proclaimed our place in the universe. Earth was the third planet from the sun. One of nine planets in orbit around it. That was it, nine planets. Sure, there was a lot of talk about planets around other stars and Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise would pay a visit to some of them every week. But in the real world we knew of nine. That was until 1992 when the first planet outside our solar system was discovered. Once the first one was found, more followed and pretty soon the numbers started to become quite significant. Today, that number stands at over 3750 extra solar planets (exoplanets) with the number growing all the time. Our own solar system wasn’t immune from discovery with large asteroids/planets discovered outside the orbit of Pluto. This meant that either we had more than nine planets or Pluto was just one of many small rocky worlds orbiting the sun at great distances. Unfortunately, Pluto got demoted and from 2006, our solar system was pronounced to have eight planets with Pluto and other bodies like it becoming “dwarf planets”. Today the variety of exoplanets discovered is immense and ranges from large hot balls of gas that travel around their parent star at breakneck speed to smaller rocky worlds orbiting at a more leisurely rate and every possible combination in between. The holy grail when it comes to finding life on other worlds are rocky earthlike planets residing in the habitable or Goldilocks zone, a

region where the temperature is not too hot and not too cold, but is just right to support liquid water on its surface. Unfortunately rocky worlds tend to be much harder to find than the larger gas planets and so the number of confirmed terrestrial exoplanets is much smaller than the total number of exoplanets discovered. In 2007, NASA launched the Kepler space telescope to discover more exoplanets and establish their frequency. Data from Kepler has already confirmed over 1000 exoplanets, with a further 3000 exoplanets to be confirmed. The good news is that using data from Kepler, scientists estimate that there are over 40 billion earth size planets in our Milky Way galaxy alone, 11 billion of which orbit sun like stars. THE 2017 AK Shalom Award in Germany has been awarded to Fr Shay Cullen and the Preda Foundation in the Philippines. The prestigious prize, which was initiated by a group of theology students at the university, has been awarded annually since 1982 for extraordinary commitment in the field of peace and human rights. Fr Shay was in Killarney last October to be presented with another sought-after accolade, the Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award. An Irish Columban Missionary, Fr Cullen has pioneered justice and peace programmes in the Philippines since he arrived there in 1969.

THEIR fancy footwork set the stage alight as Jennifer McCarthy and Timmy O’Connor danced their way to the coveted winners’ podium in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing at the INEC, Killarney. The pair entertained the sold-out audience with their routine to Walking on Sunshine. The third annual soldout event proved a huge coup for the Irish Cancer Society’s Killarney and South Kerry branch, which will use the proceeds to pay for night nurses who care for and help make cancer patients more comfortable, said its chairman Eugene O’Sullivan, Contestants were certainly put through their paces in recent months by choreographer Debbie Driscoll as they ensured their routines were perfectly pitched to wow the crowd – and of course the judges – at the 1980s-themed event. Since Strictly started three years ago it has raised in excess of €100,000 for the Irish Cancer Society’s Killarney and south Kerry branch.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PUBLIC AWARENESS ON KILLARNEY BYPASS ISSUE IS VERY WELCOME
‘People in a hurry cause accidents’

IN RELATION to Killarney Advertiser’s coverage on the Killarney Bypass junction, public awareness of this issue is very welcome but I’m of the opinion that it’s people in a hurry that cause accidents at these junctions. The suggestion of a slip lane for turning left would allow free-flow and those in a hurry to move on safely and the rest of us wait patiently until it’s safe to cross and turn right. The suggestion of opening the so-called existing pedestrian underground crossing is just a silly dream. This doesn’t exist and never did.

‘Rest assured, we don’t have any weapons of mass destruction or launch codes in Kerry’ AND so it continues….on Friday, February 10, 2017, the Irish Times carried an opinion piece by an Oliver Callan headed “Could Trumpism take off here? Yes, it already has”. To start with, I find it hard to understand how somebody can write an opinion piece about a person that they have never met, but Mr Callan proceeds to do just that. Leaving aside for a moment his comments about myself and my brother Danny, I take grave exception to his comments about our late father Jackie Healy-Rae, RIP, and his funeral to which thousands of people turned up to pay their last respects. Unfortunately my father is no longer around to stand up for his good record as a public representative for over 40 years. He proceeds to liken our reverence for our late father to Donald Trump’s “obsessive view” of his late father Fred. Well, if holding your father in high regard is a crime, sure go ahead and shoot me now, Mr Callan…. He states that I “inherited the Kerry South seat in 2011”. Well, I am sorry, Mr Callan, but politics does not work like that – there is no such
thing as “inheriting” a political seat. I put myself forward for the general election in 2011 in the same way as all of the other candidates. He talks about Brexit and immigrants but he fails to mention that I as chair of the Joint Committee on European Affairs together with other members of the Committee were in Brussels last week for talks on what Brexit will mean for Ireland. The delegation attended 14 meetings in 2 days and we met, amongst others, Mr Michel Barnier, Chief Negotiator for the European Commission, Mr Guy Verhofstadt, European Parliament Representative on Brexit, Commissioner Phil Hogan, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms Emily O’Reilly, European Ombudsman and HE Declan Kelleher, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the European Union. Under the heading “freeloaders”, he refers to expenses “clocked up” by us in March 2016 when the Dáil only sat for two days. What he fails to mention is that during this period we were in Dublin, morning, noon and night, playing our part in the negotiations on the formation
of a new Government. Mr Callan states that “you cannot condemn those who elect the Healy-Raes”. Well, I am sure that the 30,369 people in Kerry who gave us their first preference votes in Election 2016 will breathe a sigh of relief and will be delighted to hear that they are not going to be “condemned” for exercising their democratic vote. He says “let’s be glad that this most nuclear of families” doesn’t have any launch codes. Rest assured, Mr Callan, we don’t have any weapons of mass destruction or launch codes in Kerry – we don’t need them. You are more than welcome to visit the “Deep South” at any stage to check it out. Like I said at the beginning I have never met Mr Callan so I would not dare to venture or voice any “opinion” on him. He is described as “an Irish vocal and performance satirist and impressionist” and as far as I know he is quite successful in his chosen field. I wish him good luck in his future career. Electricity cables on Park Road and public lights on Countess Road AT THE recent Killarney Municipal area meeting I asked that the council would have as a proximate objective the under-grounding of the overhead electricity cables at Park Road, Killarney, as they detract from the visual aspect of a vital approach to the town. The council replied that it the under-grounding is an objective of the council but that there is no funding available at present. When funding becomes available for minor footpath works the necessary ducting will be put in place to allow for the requested to work to be done in due course. I also asked that the council would erect two public lights on the northern side of Countess Road along by the high hotel wall as the location is dangerously dark for the many who walk and jog along there. The council agreed to investigate this area and if lights are deemed necessary the project could be suitable for councillor’s allocation. I would consider allocating some money to the project. LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS MATTHEW 5:38-48: Jesus tells us to act out of love and says that acting out of love is better than acting out of revenge. What does your experience tell you? Perhaps you have at times hit back in revenge when you have been hurt or offended. What effect did this have on you, on others, and on your relationship with them? Contrast this with the times when you resisted the urge to retaliate. What outcome did this have on you, on others, and on your relationship with them, both at the time, and in the long-term? From other passages in the Gospels it is clear that Jesus did not mean that we should ignore injustices, and never make a stand against others. What lessons have you learned in life on when, and how, to make a stand? What wisdom would you share with others from your experience?

TO KNOW what matters and what does not is a lesson that accompanies us all through life. This weekend’s Word of God condenses our choices to basic fundamentals. Be holy (First Reading). Show compassion and thanks. Our desire to be holy, compassionate, grateful and to love perfectly is intensely “there” and, with equal intensity, “not there”. We hold ourselves in a condition of surrender. We desire all that God’s Word offers us by invitation, yet we choose by our passivity not to initiate nor to cooperate. St Paul opens today’s reading with a direct question: “Didn’t you realise that you were God’s temple and that the Spirit of God was living among you?” From our own sluggish passivity arises a creativity, a mysterious liberation from all the everyday ordinariness of demands and deadlines. There is nothing to say in answer to the question by St Paul, nothing even to experience in any words that sound impressive, only to accept and realise in the words of today’s Psalm, that “we are crowned with love and compassion” and our “life will be redeemed from the grave”. TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
ONE of the most famous passages in the Gospels: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. It is a radical text and not so easy. How can we be expected to love those who have hurt us or done harm to us? Anthony de Mello, an Indian Jesuit who wrote many books on spirituality, spoke often about the concept of “loving enemies”. When someone hurts us, when someone triggers emotional pain in us, de Mello suggests that we try to come to the realisation that we are “standing before our benefactor”. The situation is a reminder that we are still to grow and we are hurt because someone has not met our expectations. It is these expectations that we must let go of. We can learn from the other who has wronged us: how has this affected me? What do I need to let go of? The teachings in this passage are radical and go against what we hear around us in our world like calls for retribution and revenge. However Jesus has high expectations of his followers, to go against the grain. Jesus is not encouraging passiveness. He is inviting people to a “third way”: to make a non-violent stand when faced with persecution. By “offering the other cheek” we allow for the potential of conversion of the other to a realisation of what they have done. The easy option is to retaliate, to not see our brother or sister standing before us. We can offer them an opportunity to see our own sacred humanity. ‘Loving our enemies’ is a call to constantly move towards restoring relationships, offering mercy and peace. In the words of Gandhi: “An eye for an eye will leave the whole world blind.”

heart-safe community THE recent series of screenings of Ireland’s first talkie will ring in the changes to make Killarney a more heart-safe town. The Cooper family staged the screenings of Thomas Cooper’s movie classic The Dawn, at Cinema Killarney, in the process raising an impressive €3800 which they presented to the Heart of Killarney project which aims to see old Irish telephone boxes used to highlight the locations of, and house, defibrillators. The first telephone box was estab-
lished on Main Street in September and plans are in place for another, with the Woodlawn area proposed as the location of the next phone box. “We would like to say a special thanks to the Cooper family and Cinema Killarney for selecting the Heart of Killarney as the beneficiary from the screenings of The Dawn,” said Damien Baker of Heart of Killarney. “Killarney has inspired towns across Ireland to role this idea out so we can look forward to seeing phone boxes play an important role in Ireland once again.”

BY EVE KELLIHER RAVE reviews have followed every performance by Killarney singer/songwriter duo Greywind. The brother-and-sister team are breathing new life into the music scene, rocketing into the UK charts after a sellout performance in London recently. Super-talented Paul and Steph O’Sullivan are based in Ballydribeen and commute to London for concerts. Their album Afterthoughts was launched by Universal on January 27 when they played a capacity concert in St Pancras Old Church. “It's been a surreal start for us and we feel really grateful for everything that has happened in the last two years,” Steph told the Killarney Advertiser. “From signing a record deal with Universal,
recording our debut album in Texas, playing some of the biggest festivals in the world to selling out our debut headline show in London last month, we've achieved so much already and we're really excited for the rest of 2017.” Greywind have just announced two massive UK festivals for this summer that they have always wanted to play, Download Festival and 2000 Trees Festival. So how did they first embark on a career in the music? “Kerrang! and MTV were two of the things that got us into this genre of music so it's crazy seeing our own music videos on those TV channels and in the magazines that inspired us growing up,” said Steph. Making a splash in aid of Aware IT FIRST made a splash eight years ago and in that time the Christmas Day dip at Dundag has generated just over €40,000. Niki McCarthy, Tiernaboul, conceived of the event in memory of her sister Sylvan Money and the most recent dip raised €5359. “The day was a great success despite the weather which included high wind and heavy rain,” said Niki. “We had over 100 participants, which is the highest number so far. I would like to thank the lifeguards Derek and Conor O'Leary and the Order of Malta for providing first aid cover.” Niki presented the cheque to Dolores Gallagher of depression support charity Aware who said the funds will support people in Kerry. “The support groups are for people with experience of stress, anxiety depression and mood-related conditions. It is a free service, no referral is needed and no booking is required,” said Dolores.

Planning permission granted for new burial ground for Killarney PLANNING permission has been granted for a much-needed new burial ground for Killarney. The confirmation followed a special meeting held by members of the Killarney Municipal District and senior management of Kerry County Council at Killarney Library on Tuesday. The quest for a graveyard for Killarney started over 30 years ago. The proposed Knockeendubh site will have 2,315 spaces, 150 car parking spaces and would serve Killarney town and its hinterland’s
population of around 20,000 people for the next 35 years. Following a period of public consultation last year, Kerry County Council received 85 submissions from State agencies, councillors and local residents. Five councillors voted in favour of granting planning permission for the site with three voting against it. Negotiations are ongoing between Kerry County Council and the landowner to buy the site. RECIPE OF THE WEEK CRÈME BRÛLÉE Treat your loved ones this Easter weekend. Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School, shares his recipe for a delicious after-dinner treat
INGREDIENTS 600 ml cream Vanilla pods 10 egg yolks 60g caster sugar plus 100g for glaze METHOD Preheat oven to 150ºC. Put cream in a pot with vanilla and bring to a gentle boil. Meanwhile mix the egg yolks and sugar together, add the cream then pass it through a sieve. Place this mixture in a ramekin, put in a tray and place water around ramekins until it comes up on ¾ of the ramekins. Cook for 30 minutes until the custard has set - a gentle shake should determine this – if the custard wobbles put it back in the oven for another five minutes. Allow to cool. To serve place sugar over the custard and use a blow torch to caramelise the sugar.4This recipe makes eight.

I AM currently preparing repertoire for the summer season and I have begun to wonder, why do we consider shows that feature Irish music as being “for the tourists”? In Ireland we have a very long and proud tradition of music and this music is known all around the world. Why then do we not want to attend shows that showcase Irish music? Is it because we consider them to be “too Irish”? I have previously mentioned that I have attended both Gaelic Roots and Celtic Steps and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed myself at both shows. Are local people less inclined to go to these shows because they are always on our doorstep and therefore there is no urgency to attend? Do we feel detached from Irish music when we are not involved in it? In Ireland

The Irish music tradition has always involved the passing down of tunes and songs by ear from generation to generation. There are so many amazing pieces of Irish music out there but do we always hear them in these shows? Killarney is our town, all year round, and entertainment should be provided for and embraced by locals and tourists alike. My hope for Killarney is that we as a town will embrace the performing Arts throughout the entire year. STARRING Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, JK Simmons and John Legend La La Land is a musical revolving around themes of love, passion, music and following your dreams. The film follows two young dreamers living in Hollywood, a jazz pianist named Seb (Ryan Gosling) and a barista hoping to become an actress, Mia (Emma Stone). The film looks at the couple as they fall in love after a few chance meetings. This may sound like your typical romance film however Damien Chazelle’s film is a joy to watch; as the characters break into amazingly choreographed song and dance at the drop of a hat. The stellar cast does a marvellous job of making their characters feel raw, real and relatable while singing and dancing around the screen. La La Land is a front-runner for ”Best Picture” at the Oscars this year. It is all shot beautifully and at times feels like
La La Land you’re watching a classic musical. He uses colours to make the screen explode with personality. One day, Rachel becomes infuriated as she sees something shocking at Hipwell’s home. This causes a drunken Rachel to scramble off the train and look for Megan, only to blackout and awaken hours later in her apartment. Friend and apartment sharer Cathy, who finds out surprising information about Rachel, threatens to kick her out if she doesn’t get her act together.The next day Rachel hears tragic news which leaves her horrified and kicks off the mystery in the plot. Starring Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux, Rebecca Ferguson, Laura Prepon and Haley Bennett, this nail-biting spine-chiller will leave you with mixed emotions as the twists and turns increase and become more intense. Fantastic and highly recommended film.

The organising committee will not be held responsible for any accident or incident before, during or after the parade. 5. Arrangements should be made for children to be collected immediately after the Parade in the Car park at Beech road. There is a child collection area at the very end of the Parade inside the Car Park. 6. For Safety reasons Articulated lorries are not permitted in the Parade. (Please note that commercial entries are limited to a maximum of 1 vehicle) 7. Groups who do not complete the entry form and comply with conditions cannot be allowed to enter the Parade. TRACTORS will rev up in Mid Kerry this month as a progressive and caring committee hosts a tractor run which will enhance the quality of life for children with special needs. The Red Fox Tractor Run in aid of St Francis Special School in Beaufort will take place on Sunday, February 26. Starting at the Red Fox, located between Killorglin and Glenbeigh at 11.30am sharp, the colourful tractor run will finish at 3pm and will be followed by a family fun afternoon that will include traditional music from

"The fundraiser is to raise money to develop an Organic Sensory Garden that will benefit 54 children at this fantastic school located on the grounds of St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort," said Jacqueline Riordan, secretary of the committee) from Glenbeigh. "As a proud mother of a child attending this school we established a committee to try and support these amazing children. The school motto has always focused on each child’s ability, not their disability. St Francis

MAKING Killarney the most accessible town in Ireland for people of all abilities as well as ensuring it continues to hold its own as both a day and evening Mecca all year round for locals and visitors alike are among the many ambitions of Paul O’Neill as new president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce. Before making a lively presentation on past achievements and future aspirations of the Chamber at his first official function as Chamber leader, in The Malton Hotel, last week, Paul paid tribute to his predecessor, Kate O’Leary. Muckross native Paul, who works in property management with Park Place Apartments, has served as vice-president of the Chamber for the past two years. “During that time I aided Kate and was involved in several projects. It is a big
advantage as I know what to expect and I know what’s involved," he said. “I have to acknowledge my fantastic predecessor, Kate O'Leary. What a smart and determined lady and a lovely person. I know how much she gave to the role over the two years and frankly it scares me!” Paul is looking forward to tackling his own todo list with gusto. He added: “The theme of this year's parade is 'Diversity', so we are looking for entrants to showcase their talent and achievements. Variety and fun are what it's all about. “Due to the closure of Plunkett Street (which is from the end of February until the beginning of April) there will be a different
route for this year only. We are very happy with the route (and thank you to Fitzgerald Stadium for their co-operation) and I'm sure that it will be a fantastic festival again this year. “There will be entertainment for the spectators throughout the day and we're calling on everyone to ‘green up’ and join the fun. Like all of the festivals, we are just the operatives. It is a partnership effort with Kerry County Council, the guards and volunteers.”

Accessible tourism for all A HUGELY exciting business opportunity for Killarney may be coming very soon, said Paul O’Neill. The Killarney Chamber president noted: “Accessible tourism is making environments, venues, services and information technology suitable for the widest range of customers, including people with disabilities, illness, seniors, families with small children. “In reality accessibility is for everyone. Ireland is way behind practically every country in Europe in terms of awareness and more importantly, marketing of AT.” Over the last nine months, Paudie Healy, of Universal Access, has been managing an international pilot scheme on a new quality label programme on behalf of the European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT). “This is being done in partnership with Chamber and eight Killarney accommodation providers and it is going to be
launched globally later this year,” said Paul. “Killarney Chamber and Kerry County Council are now both associate members of ENAT. Fáilte Ireland has recently signed a framework agreement with ENAT to assist in developing Ireland to become a fully accessible destination. Universal Access has been appointed to develop the national strategy with Fáilte Ireland. The plan is to have four regional pilot Accessible Tourism destinations. Kerry County Council along with Killarney chamber have requested that Kerry be selected as one of those pilot counties with Killarney as the lead town,” said Paul “If we are successful in this bid, it will be a huge opportunity for the town and my commitment as president is to work towards making Killarney the most accessible town in Ireland.”

It seems the cold of winter is to stay with us another while, but the longer daylight hours are encouraging growth everywhere we look, says Debby Looney
I SEE drifts of blackthorn in flower interspersed with catkins and hazel tassels in the hedgerows, and in my own garden daffodils are making an appearance. A very welcome sight is the emergence of the tiny hardy cyclamen, C. coum. We are all familiar with the showy indoor cyclamen, and the – arguably suitable! – winter bedding varieties, but Cyclamen coum is a truly hardy variety. Its flowers appear around now, before the leaves, in shades ranging from pure white to the deepest pink. I sat my two plants ten years ago, and they have formed a beautiful carpet under the apple tree. The second plant I can recommend is the Chinese witch hazel, or Hammamelis mollis, a large shrub which also flowers before the leaves appear. The flowers range from yellow to a burnt orange, and are strongly scented. It is hardy, likes our acid soil and also has beautiful autumn foliage. I find that with the promise of spring, I tend to get a little too
eager to sow my vegetables. The most difficult thing is to wait until the right time…April seems so far away! However, it might be worth considering an indoor propagator if you don’t have a heated greenhouse. A propagator can be as simple as a sheet of clear plastic over a seed tray, or there are fancier (and temptingly attractive) types with their own stand, and large clear hoods. They are great if you want to get the kids involved, lettuce and radishes for example can be grown indoors at any time. Also, sweet peas can be sown indoors now, soak the seed the night before in some tepid water to speed up germination. Sow one or two about 1cm deep in a deep pot (I use loo-rolls so the whole thing can be planted out avoiding root disturbance), and soon the seedlings will pop up. When they grow to about 12cm pinch out the top to encourage sideshoots. Before long, we will be cutting their sweet smelling flowers and filling jars with them all over the house!

Killarney Town Twinning and Sister Cities Association update KILLARNEY has had a long history of sister and twin towns and cities and this year alone celebrates 30 years as a twin town of Castiglione in Sicily and 10 years as a twin town of Pleinfeld in Germany. The Killarney Town Twinning and Sister Cities Association welcomed visitors from eight of Killarney’s twinned towns in 2016. “We had groups from Pleinfeld, Germany, and Staffanstorp, Sweden, for our St Patrick’s Day festival,” said the chairman of the association, Sean Counihan. “I would like to acknowledge the municipal office for sponsorship for the welcoming event and the parade committee for tickets for a boat trip for our guests.” The Killarney Town Twinning and sister Cities Association also welcomed a large group from Springfield, Illinois, the Moseley-Keen Group, as well as

friends from Myrtle Beach and Scottsdale, and in addition the association’s secretary travelled to Casperia, outside Rome. “We see huge merit in formulating an association or full twinning between our two towns and look forward to their visit in July,” said Mr Counihan, who thanked the Killarney Plaza Hotel for its hospitality and the managers of the golf clubs, Micheal O’Donoghue as director of Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, Killarney Chamber, members of the municipal office, teachers form local schools, Terence Mulcahy, chairperson of the Kerry branch of the Hotels Federation, the Killarney Rotary Club and Killarney Lions Club, as well as the mayor of Killarney Councillor Brendan Cronin. The chairman of the Killarney Town Twinning and
sister Cities Association received a request to visit Castiglione, Killarney’s first twinned town. “Unfortunately due to various reasons no one from the municipal twin committee was in position to take up the offer of a few places from the Killarney Town Twinning and Sister Cities Association, due to pressure of work,” said Mr Counihan who led a delegation for a four-day visit, which entailed a six-day commitment. “The expense for this trip was borne by those that travelled which included an overnight in Dublin for the very early flight,” he said. The association has applied for European funding. “We will see how that evolves,” added Mr Counihan. “We will need to speak to the municipal office about a helping hand regarding funding.”

KRIS MEEKE could only finish 12th in Rally Sweden after going off the road on Saturday when running in fifth spot. The Citroen pair were battling for a podium spot when they went off on stage 14 to drop them out of contention. Although the car was undamaged, they lost over eight minutes as spectators helped to remove them from a snow bank. Finnish driver Jari-Matti Latvala won the rally for Toyota, ahead of M-Sport duo Ott Tanak and Sebastien Ogier. Toyota, in what was only their second rally back after a 17-year absence from the World Rally Championship. Second place in stage seven showed that Meeke had potential, however it was clear that Meeke was unhappy with his new generation WRC Citroen. However they still managed to record his first championship points of the season as they finished fourth in the powerstage, which leaves him 14th in the standings. Their Citroen teammate Craig Breen, making his debut in a 2017 spec rally car, had another strong showing as he came home in fifth. 17.02.17 Killarney Advertiser

GENERAL MOTORS and PSA Group have confirmed that negotiations have begun to sell off Opel to PSA. The sale, it is claimed by both parties, would improve both operational efficiency and profitability. PSA, which owns Peugeot, Citroen and the DS brand, already works with GM Europe’s brand and shares production and development of some SUVs and people movers. Combined, the Opel-PSA alliance would see the newly formed car maker take 16 per cent of the European car market, making it second only to the Volkswagen Group, which accounts for more than 24% of Euro sales.

‘Let’s get training and keep the wheels on the Kerry/Cork Health Link bus rolling’
ALL SET TO RUN FOR THE BUS AGAIN THEY turned out in force for the first Run for the Bus event held in Glenflesk and now big-hearted men, women and children are limbering up to get on their marks for another fundraiser for the deserving cause. Run for the Bus is the title of a series of cash drives organised by the Glenflesk ag Rith jogging group in aid of the KerryCork Health Link bus, which brings people to Cork for cancer treatment. The recent 5k family run that took place in Glenflesk GAA grounds proved a major success and now all are welcome to take part in an upcoming event in Castleisland on Sunday, April 2, in aid of the same cause. An Ríocht AC Grounds is the venue for the event, with options of a 1k or 2k event for children and a 5k or 10k walk or run.
The children’s event takes place at 12 noon while the 5k and 10k events will unfold from 1pm to 2.30pm. All proceeds will benefit the Kerry/Cork Health Link Bus. “It’s time to get training and keep the wheels on the Kerry Cork Health link bus rolling!” said a spokesperson for the organisers. There is a suggested donation of €10 per adult and €5 per child, or €20 for a family (two adults and two children). Music, spot prizes and refreshments will all add to the fun of the day. The health link bus has stops at the following locations – Tralee, Castlemaine, Killorglin, Caherciveen, Beaufort, Fossa, Killarney, Glenflesk, Kenmare Cross, Ballyvourney and Macroom.

Sean O’Shea, transition year student at St Brendan’s College, reports on how classes in the number-one spoken language in the world are proving hugely popular CHINESE classes were introduced in St Brendan’s College in Killarney in recent years and as a transition-year student, I feel it is extremely beneficial. The St Brendan’s College Chinese New Year dinner is an annual event held to support the teaching of Chinese in the school. The Chinese classes are a unique opportunity to learn the number-one spoken language in the world spoken by approximately 1.051 billion people. Chinese classes can also by availed by people of any age in the evenings for a fee of €50 for 10 classes. The Chinese New Year celebration on January 31 in The Gleneagle Hotel consisted of dinner of authentic Chinese cuisine, a showcase of Chinese culture including dancing and martial arts performances, followed by a raffle with several spot prizes and hampers supplied by
local businesses. The dignitaries in attendance included the Lord Mayor of Killarney, Councillor Brendan Cronin, the President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Paul O’Neill, and the head off the UCC Confucius institute, Mr Yongbin Xia. The Chinese programme is operated by he Confucius Institute, UCC, and the dinner is organised in aid of this. The programme also gives several students from multiple schools the opportunity to visit China for two weeks and attend classes and experience the culture in Shanghai University at each year. This includes 11 students from St Brendan’s College who will be travelling this Easter. The Chinese New Year dinner was an incredibly enjoyable evening in aid of a great cause. I would recommend everyone to attend next year.

Killarney’s Pres basketballers are a force to be reckoned with CONGRATULATIONS to the talented basketball players at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School. Presentation Killarney played Presentation Dingle in the Pres gym in Killarney during the week. The first and second year players competed in the league contest, with both teams being successful in their games. “They have won all their games in the League so far and are looking forward to their next challenge!” said school PRO Vivienne Buckley. The final score for the first years was Killarney 27, Dingle 10; while the final score for the second years was Killarney 42, Dingle 14.

Crokes blitz Corofin to book long-awaited Croker date It took a bit longer than expected but the Crokes will finally have another day out in Croke Park, Adam Moynihan TEN years on from that draw and subsequent defeat to Crossmaglen, and twenty-five from their sole All-Ireland back in '92, the undisputed kingpins of Kerry football have earned themselves another shot at the big one. I doubt anyone thought their passage would be so comfortable. It's not often you get the Crokes at anything other than odds on so a lot of Killarney punters jumped at the opportunity to back them against Corofin last weekend. It turned out to be easy money. From the very first play you could tell that Pat O'Shea's side were at it. Kieran O'Leary was especially lively as he took his man to the cleaners in the first half,
eventually racking up six points in what was a Man of the Match display. Leary is zipping around the place like an 18 year old at the moment and Slaughtneil will have to find some way of stifling him if they have any hope of stopping the Crokes. There was obviously a huge element of good fortune in Gavin O'Shea's crucial first half goal but Crokes were so dominant in the early stages you'd have to say they were good value for their lead. They bossed every department and were particularly impressive in defence - the very area of the field where favourites Corofin were expected to have a big advantage. Corner back John Payne was
Rugby news & views ANOTHER absolutely riveting weekend of rugby last weekend, with local, provincial and international rugby making the headlines. First off, Munster took on the Newport/Gwent Dragons at Thomond Park in the PRO 12 and pretty much hockeyed the visitors, winning on a score line of 45 points to 17. Jack O’Donoghue was the man of the match, in a side devoid of the internationals but it was great to see Rassie give the younger players a shot. Next weekend Munster head to the Liberty Stadium to take on the Ospreys in the next round of the league. Last Saturday, the Irish national side took on Italy at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome in the second round of the RBS Six Nations. Still smarting from the defeat to Scotland the previous weekend, Joe Schmidt’s men were determined to keep the

immense from start to finish and he and his colleagues at the back barely put a foot wrong all day, while some excellent football further up the field from the likes of Gooch and Daithí Casey led to plenty of fine scores. Those two combined to devastating effect midway through the second half to turn defence into attack and all but seal the victory. Gooch did superbly to turn the ball over in the left corner back position and picked out Casey with a typically accurate pass. Casey then proceeded to carry the ball half the length of the pitch, seemingly getting faster the further he travelled, before teeing up substitute Jordan Kiely who calmly applied the finish. It was a superb goal to cap a great team performance and from then on

In the end the final score read 10-63 in favour of the visitors with CJ Stander and Craig Gilroy scoring hat tricks and the bonus point in the bag. Next weekend there is a well-deserved break in the Six Nations and Ireland prepare to face France at the Aviva on Saturday, February 25. I always maintain that a good Munster Junior League match is as good as any Munster match or Ireland match for entertainment and last Sunday’s match between our own Killarney RFC and near neighbours Killorglin RFC was an absolute cracker. This fixture was postponed from the previous week where the elements disrupted the final round of matches in Division 3. Killorglin led the league all season, howev-
er Mitchelstown overtook them last weekend and this match was set up to be a battle as Killorglin needed to win to secure the league and earn promotion to Division 2. Killarney were looking to consolidate their third place spot and to continue the good form ahead of the Munster Juniors Bowl competition as well as the Martin O’Sullivan Cup final in a few weeks. A six-try thriller saw the home side run out winners as the bumper crowd witnessed some sublime rugby and the Killarney scrum was a sight to behold. Next weekend the lads head to Dungarvan in the semi final of the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Bowl. Best of luck, lads!

The Croke Park pitch should suit their style of play and if they can replicate the focus and intensity of last Saturday it would take an exceptional team to stop them.

DR CROKES QUALIFY FOR ALL IRELAND CLUB FOOTBALL FINAL Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on the All Ireland club football semi-final
DR CROKES duly qualified for the 2017 All Ireland club football final when they defeated Corofin, the Connacht champions, 2-11 to 0-8 in a thrilling game at Limerick Gaelic grounds on Saturday last. They will meet Slaught neil in the final on St Patrick’s Day at Croke Park. The Derry club side defeated the highly rated St Vincent’s of Dublin in the other semi-final, 0-12 to 0-10. Crokes lost the 2012, 2013 and the 2014 semi-finals but there was no heartbreak story this time round. There was only 29 seconds gone in my watch when Brian Looney fired over a morale boosting opening point and still in the first minute Kieran O’Leary added a point. This was the first of his five points in the opening half to earn himself the Man of the Match award. Pat O’Shea had done a great job in the preparations for this big game. His charges sprinted out of the starting blocks, which mesmerised Corofin. They were reeling from Crokes intensity and were really playing catch-up with Crokes, who never lost that early lead. The Killarney side led by three points before Ian Burke opened the scoring for Corofin with a point in the 10th minute. GAVIN O’SHEA’S GOAL Crokes were steady in all positions as Corofin tried to get in to the game By the 23rd minute Corofin had reduced
the deficit 5 points to 4, but that was as good as it got for them. Crokes scored their first goal in the 26th minute when Gavin O’Shea’s shot deceived Bernard Power in the Corofin goal and the green flag was raised. Kieran O’Leary added two more points to send Crokes in to the dressing room at half time with a comfortable lead of 1-7 to 0-5. It was a fair reflection of the state of play, so it remained to be seen if that five-point lead would suffice for the second half, when Corofin would have the aid of the breeze playing in to the Clare end of the ground. By the 33rd minute Crokes had extended the lead to six points 1-9 to 0-6 thanks to points from Colm Cooper and Daithí Casey. Corofin had plenty of attacks, but the Crokes defenders excelled, especially Fionn Fitzgerald, John Payne and Mike Moloney. Corofin did have a great chance of a goal in the 34th minute, but the tight Croke defence saved the day. The Connacht champions also hit three bad wides, but they were kicking under pressure from the fast-tackling Crokes’ backs. way back in the Crokes 21 yard line and taking the quick free the wily Kerry star picked out Daithí Casey i lár na páirce. Casey set off on a lung-bursting run for half of the field with three Corofin players in hot pursuit. However, Casey kept the momentum going, drew the defender Ciarán McGrath before parting to Kiely close to goal. The latter kept his head and drew Bernard Power the Corofin ‘keeper before slotting the O’Neill’s in to the net. It was just reward for the efforts outfield of Cooper and Casey. Both of these players are usually among the top scorers for Crokes but they scored little on Saturday, two points for Casey and a single point for Cooper. In both cases the points came from frees. However, their contributions to general play were excellent. Cooper’s foot passing was first class and he controlled play around the centre in the final quarter. Kiely’s goal put the issue beyond doubt and Pat O'Shea emptied the bench. Tony Brosnan was on the field just a few minutes when he scored a point. Goalkeeper Shane Murphy, who had little to do over the hour, such was the tenacity of his defenders, came upfield to take a long free in to the teeth of the wind to score a fine point and conclude the scoring. It was a day when all players did well, even with the loss of Eoin Brosnan. Special mention must be given to Croke midfielders team captain Johnny Buckley and Ambrose O’Donovan, who put in a great hour. TEAM PERFORMANCE

Crokes backroom team will be particularly pleased with this team performance and the contribution the subs made when they entered the fray. This team was so well prepared and there was no let-up in the training since the Munster final. They trained right through the Christmas period and O’Shea made the decision not to play challenge games over that long period after the win over The Nire. It paid off handsomely, as they bounced on to the Gaelic grounds and hit the ground running notching three early points. Corofin did not know what hit them. Killarney Musical Society are very excited to announce the leading cast for our production of “Me and My Girl” running from March 22nd to 24th in the INEC. “Me and My Girl” tells the story of Bill Snibson, a somewhat unrefined cockney gentleman who learns he is the heir to the Earl of Hareford. However, Bill’s inheritance depends on his ability to fit in to this new world, which may not include his love, Sally Smith. Ian McGuirk will play the role of Bill with Lily McMonagle taking on the part of Sally. Sir John will be played by Gerry Adams, Derek O’Leary will play Mr. Parchester and Pádraig Creedon and Rory Ward will play the parts of Charles and Gerald Bolingbroke respectively. Orna Cleary O’Shea will portray the Duchess while Emir Guihan takes on the role of Lady Jacqueline. Rehearsals are in full swing with only 5 weeks to go to this spectacular production!

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the Tipperary Invitational gala on Sunday the 5th of February. There were substantial improvements by our swimmers on their own “personal best” times for events and a fine haul of 28 individual medals. UNDER 15 BOYS Moving up in the age groups, Adam Flynn was very relaxed in the pool, taking home a fine pair of bronze medals in the 50 metres backstroke and the 50 metres breaststroke. UNDER 15 GIRLS Cliona Murphy was showing some fine pace to win silver in the 100 metres backstroke. Moya Noctor won a well-deserved and very stylish bronze in the 50 metres breaststroke while Orlaith O’Sullivan was focussing on the longer, harder events to win bronze in the 100 metres freestyle and a second bronze in the 100 metres Individual
Medley. UNDER 19 GIRLS Meadhbh O’Sullivan simply hoovered up the medals in Tipperary, easily winning the gold in the 50 metres breaststroke, silver in the 100 metres Individual Medley, another silver in the 50 metres backstroke and rounding all that off with a bronze in the 100 metres freestyle. Emma Quirke laid down some markers of her own, taking silver in the 50 metres breaststroke and silver 50 metres butterfly while Rebecca Twomey set out her stall to win the bronze in a very fast 50 metres backstroke. Thanks to our coaches who gave wonderful support and encouragement to all our swimmers on the day. Thanks also to all parents for travelling.

CORK HOR Last weekend, the club was represented at the Cork Head Of the River by our Mens Masters Four crew namely Brendan O’Neill, John Buckley, Ronan Spillane and Tim O’Shea, coxed by Karen Joy. The time trial event was held in bitterly cold conditions and attracted a large entry of clubs and crews from Munster and beyond. Racing twice, our Masters Four were second to Shandon in their first row by a margin of less than two seconds. Mystery continues to surround the unprinted finish time of the second row at time of print, but well done to crew and cox on two good spins! Meanwhile at home, many of our junior members were busily whiled away with study for their mock exams. We wish all our student members preparing for State exams and assessments continued success. PARENTS DAY The club will host a Parents Day at the boathouse this Sunday 19th February at 11am. Following the Rio Olympics and our Club Open Days last year, we’ve seen great interest from our newest and youngest members who have swelled the ranks of rowers taking to the water over the past few months. Some great progress has been made by all involved. On Sunday, we are inviting all parents of junior members to visit the boathouse and see all the action up close. We will have a number of coaches and adult members on hand and parents can take a trip in our safety boats. Plus there will be tea, coffee and some treats afterwards for all to enjoy. All family members welcome, don’t miss it! EVENTS The next competitive outing for the club is the St. Michael’s Head Of the River on Saturday 25th February. The Galway Head Of the River planned for 18th March has been cancelled by the event organisers. However, the Kerry Head Of the River hosted by Killorglin RC is now set to make a welcome return to the fixtures list on Saturday 11th March.

U 16S: Killarney hosted Bandon in the final round of the Munster Bowl. As is now an established custom, Killarney conceded an unconverted try within 5 minutes, and another within ten leaving the score 10-0 to the visitors .Killarney did however respond on 18 minutes when No 8 Craig McKenzie -Vass, barged over near the corner after a penalty line out move straight off the training paddock delivered a much needed score to settle the nerves.Almost immediately Bandon scored a converted try andKillarney trailed by 22-5 at the break. Killarney got back into the game and remarkably did not concede a single point in the second half, in fact Captain Richard Wallace scored at the death off a tap penalty, to win the half! Final score 22-10 to Bandon. U18’S: Playing away in Cork for the second consecutive Saturday Killarney returned over the County Bounds in a much better frame of mind. Though defeated they played extremely well against a very well drilled and competent opposition. The opening exchanges belonged to Old Christians who handled the ball well in the face of a stiff breeze. Gradually Killarney found their feet and taking the ball through the phases scored an excellent converted try. While the host team held the upper hand throughout they were not able to pull away from their opponents. Whenever Old Christians crossed the whitewash Killarney responded with their own score to keep the contest competitive. Captain Dylan McCarthy and Alan Lynch, as ever, led from the front, each scoring a try in the process. Final Score: Old Christians RFC 40 - Killarney RFC 26 . SENIORS: Last Sunday our Seniors took on local rivals Killorglin in the postponed final round of the League. The men from
the Laune travelled the short distance to Aghadoe clear in the knowledge that a win would win them the league and promotion to Division 2. However, Ger Moynihans men are in a serious vein of form at the moment. Following continuous infringements the referee awarded a penalty try on the 25th minute to give the home side the opening score, which was converted by Paudie Sheahan. Killorglin followed with an unconverted try of their own. Killarney second row Alan Mulligan added his now trademark try to bring the score to 14 - 5 at half time. The visitors added a try early in the second half and Brendan Fuller got to the end of a great passage of play to touch down for the Black and red, which delighted the home crowd and in particular the huge Mitchelstown contingent who travelled up for the match. A Killorglin drop goal was added before Scrum half Paul O’Sullivan added to his excellent season tally. Killarney’s scrum was simply sublime and they dominated to win on a scoreline of 24 - 15, which saw Mitchelstown crowned the League winners.

JUVENILE NEWS U16 Boys Lee Strand Plate Final Killarney Cougars 55 Glenbeigh Falcons 72 The Cougars great opening qtr saw them lay the foundations for victory over the Falcons in a very entertaining and high scoring final. Cougars dominated the early exchanges to race into a 10 point lead with the Cougars dominant on the boards with Sean O’Brien, Daniel Aleksjenko, and David Bartlett all on target. The determined Falcons recovered well in the second qtr and trailed 3824 at halftime thanks to the excellent shooting of Rian O’Donovan who hit some excellent outside shots and Tommy Quirke with great baskets to keep them well in contention. The determined Falcons reduced the arrears to eight points early in the final qtr with successive three pointers from Rian O’Donovan and Tommy Quirke to get their support going but Cougars responded in style with Ruairi Murphy, Sean O’Brien and Captain Eoin Talbot all hitting some excellent baskets to kill off a good Falcons side who just never gave up for Coach Mary Jo in an excellent contest for the large attendance. This was a first title for the Boys U16 title for the Cougars in their first ever season in this age group. SENIOR NEWS

Ladies Div 1 Killarney Cougars 53 St Marys 56 A great Div 1 game at the Pres Gym saw St Marys snatch victory having trailed throughout the game as Cougars produced their best performance of the league. Cougars lead 21-10 at the end of the opening qtr and held the lead 33-24 at half time with Chloe O’Doherty in top form with three three pointers and Marian O’Callaghan and Cassandra Buckley both hitting three pointers. Cougars struggled in the third qtr as the Castleisland came back well into the game with Lorraine Scanlon beginning to cause problems for Cougars under the boards as the game finished the game tied 42 42. The lead changed sides throughout the final qtr and with the game in the balance Cougars got into foul trouble and it proved costly as it sent St Marys to the free throw line and they added 5 points from the line to secure the points in a very exciting finish and was a hard loss for the Cougars in very competitive game. The Co Finals of the cultural events took place over the weekend. This was a very busy week for Community Games. On Friday night the recitations were held. Congratulations to Cian Sheahan who won a silver medal. Jack Costello represented Firies in the solo singing in a very competitive event and is still young enough to compete next year. In the singing group Ciara Duggan, Emma Affonso, Alianne Fleming, Jack Costello, Rachel Murphy & Muireann Ring performed for Firies. Thank you to Rachel Hoctor who trained this group. The art and hand writing competitions are being run through the schools. Swimming u8, u10, u12, u14, u16 boys and girls will be held on March 5th in Tralee Sports Complex. U15 DIV 1 Mastergeeha 0 Killorglin 4. The final score flattered the visitors somewhat as this was a more even contest throughout with the lads competing well against promotion chasing Killorglin. A 10min purple patch midway through the 2nd half when the visitors scored 3 quick goals gave the away team the points. Shane Warren and GK Conn Fleming stood out for Geeha who did have chances with Darren Lehane and Adam O’Connor both going close but Killorglin defended well and were more clinical up front on the day. SENIORS PREMIER B Mastergeeha 2 Castleisland 1. In this close game Mastergeeha took the lead midway through the first half when Carlo finished off a good move. After this both sides created some chances with the visitors getting the equaliser with 10 minutes remaining. Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the Tipperary Invitational gala on Sunday the 5th of February. There were substantial improvements by our swimmers on their own “personal best” times for events and a fine haul of 28 individual medals. UNDER 15 BOYS Moving up in the age groups, Adam Flynn was very relaxed in the pool, taking home a fine pair of bronze medals in the 50 metres backstroke and the 50 metres breaststroke. UNDER 15 GIRLS Cliona Murphy was showing some fine pace to win silver in the 100 metres backstroke. Moya Noctor won a well-deserved and very stylish bronze in the 50 metres breaststroke while Orlaith O’Sullivan was focusing on the longer, harder events to win bronze in the 100 metres freestyle and a second bronze in the 100 metres Individual
Medley. UNDER 19 GIRLS Meadhbh O’Sullivan simply hoovered up the medals in Tipperary, easily winning the gold in the 50 metres breaststroke, silver in the 100 metres Individual Medley, another silver in the 50 metres backstroke and rounding all that off with a bronze in the 100 metres freestyle. Emma Quirke laid down some markers of her own, taking silver in the 50 metres breaststroke and silver 50 metres butterfly while Rebecca Twomey set out her stall to win the bronze in a very fast 50 metres backstroke. U14 DIVISION 2 PLATE FINAL St Paul’s 31 Cougars 17 THIS match was a repeat of the U-12 Plate final two years ago with local rivals Cougars providing the opposition for St Paul’s again. Cougars got off to the better start in the first few minutes of the opening quarter but great defence by Aisling Stack, Jade Potts and Eve Crowley along with baskets from Holly Power and Tara Donnellan brought St Paul's back. The second quarter got off to a lightening start with the introduction of Katie O'Connor and Jess Leahy superb in defence while Clodagh Sheehan, Ellen Kennedy and Ashling Stack were superb under the basket and took their scores well to give for St Pauls a 17-5 lead at the end of the first half. Cougars responded in the third quarter but Ellen Kennedy, Nicole Cronin and Sarah McGrath were dominant under the boards while Saoirse Dorrian and Caelyn O'Grady were also outstanding. St Paul’s continued to stay in control and with Cougars in foul trouble, St Paul's led by nine points at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was played in high tempo. St Paul’s defence ensured they kept their lead and they dominated the closing stages to finish deserving winners in a good contest that was well supported by a large crowd. BASKETBALL CLINIC St Pauls Basketball Club will be
hosting a basketball clinic in Killarney Sports & Leisure centre on Thursday and Friday, February 23 and 24, with a selection of great coaches. St Paul's head coach Muharem 'Muki' Vugdalic will lead the clinic and he will be assisted by Irish International senior players Amy Waters and Niamh Dwyer. Club coaches James Fleming, Shane Horgan, Kate Donnellan, Padraig Weldon and Elizabeth Switzer will also assist with the clinic and more coaches are expected to be announced in the meantime. The clinic will run from 10am to 2pm on both days for players aged from 6 to 14. The participation cost is €25 per child and there will be reductions for additional family members. Teams descend on west Kerry for 28th Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé KERRY clubs are well represented in The Lidl Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé 2017, the famed club Gaelic football tournament and festival which takes place this weekend (February 17-19) in Comórtas HQ at Páidí Ó Sé’s pub in Ventry and various GAA venues across the Dingle Peninsula. Some 32 teams in all compete from 13 counties as well as teams from the UK and the United Arab Emirates in ladies and men’s senior, intermediate and junior competitions. For Kerry Gaelic football enthusiasts there is plenty to catch the eye with Kerry’s An Daingean, Milltown/Castlemaine, An Ghaeltacht with player/manager Marc Ó Sé and Waterville taking part in the Dermot Earley senior men’s cup which also includes 2016 Laois county senior champions Stradbally, Kildare’s Sarsfields, Dublin’s Fingallians and 2016 Wexford senior county finalists Glynn-Barntown. Kerry's Keel, Annascaul and Lispole are up against Meath’s Dunderry, North Cork side Knocknagree and Sligo’s St. John’s in The Boars Head intermediate men’s cup and Valentia Island are flying the flag in the junior men’s cup against Cavan’s Shannon Gaels, Cork’s Ballinacurra and also the Dubai Celts. Spa dancers twirl their way to all-Ireland glory WELL done to the enormously talented young members of Spa GAA Club who have won their sixth national title in just four years. Club chairman Gerard Mangan gave the competitors a great send-off from Spa clubhouse before they set off last Friday for Belfast for the GAA Scór na nÓg All-Ireland finals. Spa competed in GAA Scór na nÓg All Ireland finals in the set dancing and quiz events on Saturday at the Waterfront Theatre in Belfast. The set dance team of Aine Brosnan, Erin Holland, Meghann Cronin, Orlaith Spillane, Kianan O’Doherty, Liam
Spillane, Gary O’Sullivan and Cian O’Sullivan stepped into the limelight last weekend to bring home yet another All-Ireland medal haul to Kerry. Also doing the club proud in the quiz final at the event were James Lynch, Daniel O’Sullivan, Kianan O’Doherty and Louise Fleming. The quiz team came very close but unfortunately lost out by two points to the overall winners, Donegal. ALL IRELAND CLUB SEMI FINAL Dr Crokes 2-11 Corofin 0-8 It may have been our disappointment at being beaten at the penultimate stages of this competition on three occasions the last few years that galvanised us to giving one of our best displays in years to secure victory over Corofin and a place in the St Patrick’s Day Final. Our anxiousness for victory was there from the opening throw in, which Johnny Buckley won and set up for an early score. We had two points on the board at the end of the 1st minute and were three points in front after five minutes. Our opponents sent over two points which left us 0-5 to 0-2 ahead at the end of the first quarter. We had a barren spell, score wise in the first ten minutes of the second quarter as we failed to add to our score tally even though we were very much on the offensive. In the 26th minute we had a goal after a good passing movement. Gavin O’Shea sent in a ball that looked like sailing over the bar but ended under the bar. In the remaining minutes a Corofin free and two points from Kieran O’Leary gave us an interval lead of 1-7 to 0-5. We again had the first two points of the second half but three unanswered points by our opponents reduced our lead to four points as we entered the last quarter. The defining moment in the game came in the 50th minute. Colm Cooper won a great ball in our own left full back position. It was transferred to Daithi Casey on the half way line who soloed right into our opponents ten yard line and transferred the ball to Jordan Kiely who made no mistake in registering the green flag for a seven point lead. At this stage we were emptying our bench and the fresh legs gave us great energy in the last ten minutes. We sent over two points without reply in this period for a 2-11 to 0-8 victory. Even though we had many outstanding performances throughout the field one could hardly disagree with TG4 nomination of Kieran O’Leary as Man of the Match. His 0-5 from play was a huge contribution towards our victory. Our Congratulations to our players on this great victory. The second half quickly settled into a familiar pattern as Rathmore once again slipped in for a goal and that put the game to bed. James should be ok for Kerrys next engagement vs Monaghan in Killarney on February 26th.The performances of Brian Kelly and Jonathan Lyne definitely did enough to merit inclusion for the Round 3 encounter. The home side continued to battle against a strong breeze in the second half with points from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan and Micheál Shaughnessy. The course of the game change with Keel’s Martin Burke bursting through the centre to goal midway through the half. This, ultimately, gave Keel the added energy to finish the game out. Further points from Garry Sayers and Terry O’Sullivan paved the way for an opening round win LAUNE RANGERS 0-11, MILLTOWN/CASTLEMAINE 0-09 Laune Rangers got their 2017 season off to a great start with a Mid Kerry League defeat of Milltown/Castlemaine on a cold Sunday afternoon in JP O’Sullivan Park. John Tyther put Laune Rangers into an early lead with a well taken point before Cathal Moriarty replied for Milltown/Castlemaine. Frees were then traded between Colm O’Shea and Jonathon O’Sullivan, while a Ronan Sayers point for Rangers was cancelled out with another free by O’Sullivan. John Tyther added his second point of the game to give Rangers the lead by 0-4 to 0-3 with fifteen minutes played. Colm O’Shea added two frees before a superb point from distance by Jack O’Connor put four points between the sides following some great work by David Costelloe and Shane Mangan. Two Jonathon O’Sullivan frees halved the deficit before the break, and the sides headed for the dressing room with the score at Half Time:- Laune Rangers 0-8, Milltown/Castlemaine 0-6. Colm O’Shea slotted three in succession for the hosts to see Rangers lead by 0-11 to 0-7 with a quarter to play. The final quarter was attritional in nature & scores were at a premium. Milltown/Castlemaine added another Jonathon O’Sullivan free before substi-
tute Eoin O’Mahony slotted a well taken point for the visitors. Rangers held on their remaining lead though, and referee Billy O’Shea blew the final whistle to give Laune Rangers victory. Full Time score:- Laune Rangers 0-11, Milltown/ Castlemaine 0-9. GLENBEIGH/GLENCAR 0-09 BEAUFORT 0-09 Beaufort started the game with the breeze and dominated the first half. Glenbeigh/Glencars scoring chances were limited but they will be disappointed to have missed a few frees that would of kept them in touch in the early stages. Danny O Sullivan, Podge Griffin, Sean Roche and Bernard Murphy tried to drive the game on but attempted attack after attack broke down with Calvin Teahan, Kieran Cahillane and Leon Seidler left with little opportunity in the full forward line. Beaufort comprehensively won the first half and a scoreline of 0-0 to 0-09 fairly reflected this. Glenbeigh/Glencar started the second half much better and gradually worked their way back into the match as they reduced the deficit as the half continued. Vincent Hoare had an excellent game as he drove the lads on from the back. Adrian O Connor made his senior debut and can be proud of his performance. Daniel Griffin and Tommy Cahill were introduced and helped Glenbeigh/Glencar earn a replay with a well deserved nine point turn around in the second half to level the match 0-09 0-09 final score.
