"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

John Calls Time On Enjoyable Career In Retail HIS friendly smile and expert advice have been part and parcel of the top-class retail service John Dunlea has delivered to the people of Killarney for almost six decades. And there has been a steady stream of well-wishers stopping by Killarney Hardware to congratulate John as he gets set to retire from behind the counter tomorrow. The Kilcummin man started his career in Billy Prendeville’s grocery shop on Main Street in 1957. From there John moved to MD O’Shea’s around 10 years later and then on to grocery and hardware shop TJ Lyne’s of New Street. When that business was sold to Galvin’s Builders, John remained in the retail business, moving from there to Killarney Hardware in 1980, where he has been a member of staff for over 35 years. “I have always really enjoyed my work,” John told the Killarney Advertiser. “What I particularly loved was dealing with the public. I was a glass cutter and used to enjoy that aspect of the job also.” A dedicated member of Kilcummin GAA Club, John served as clubofficer and treasurer for three decades. His colleague for 35 years, Gerrard Warren, and the owners of Killarney Hardware, Seamus and Mary O’Sullivan Darcy, will be among those paying tribute to John at a retirement party taking place across the road in the Killarney Royal Hotel when he hangs up his boots after his last day at work, tomorrow evening. “So many customers have been wishing me well, it’s been wonderful,” he said. John is looking forward to spending more time following the fortunes of his beloved Kilcummin GAA Club as well as walking and cycling. His wife Catriona and daughter Sile are among those helping him celebrate an illustrious career.

Editor’s View WELL, no one can argue that it hasn’t been a jam-packed week what with the general election followed by the nail-biting count over the weekend. Congratulations to the successful candidates and indeed all who put themselves forward. See our election special on pages 16 and 18 for the updates and photos from the Kerry count as it unfolded at Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre. Meanwhile, as Killarney’s hospitality sector gears up for a busy season, the nation’s hoteliers converged on The Gleneagle Hotel for the Irish Hotels Federation conference where the vibe for the year ahead was a positive one; see more on page 26. Also on an upbeat note, Killarney Legion GAA Club welcomed its honorary member Joanne O’Riordan as it rewarded its top achievers at its annual awards night (page 24). Yet more talent will be on show this weekend as the Killarney Rotary Club hosts its annual Young Musician of the Year event today and tomorrow, at the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service centre, Killarney, followed by a concert at the Franciscan Friary tomorrow, Saturday, at 8pm; all welcome. Stay up to date with all the latest local news in this, our print edition, and via our website, killarneyadvertiser.ie As always, we welcome your views, so get in touch. Lights, Camera And Action In Killarney CINEMA KILLARNEY was the place to be last Thursday night for a special event focusing on short films by Kerry filmmakers. Tommy Cooper, Cinema Killarney, supported the event, which was the second annual showcase allowing local directors and propducters to display their work on the big screen. The events format was informal with shorts being shown and a question and answers session with the filmmakers after their respective short. The night’s MC was Hugh O’Donoghue and movies shown included music videos, documentaries, animation and drama shorts. “The audenice’s sharp questioning gave them an insightful look into what is involved in creating a short,” said a spokesperson. “For future events ‘like’ Killarney Cinema and Short Screen Killarney on Facebook.”

Question I know that medical treatments available in Ireland can be accessed in other EU countries instead. What if I need a treatment that isn’t available in Ireland? Answer If you are entitled to public health services that are available in Ireland, it is possible to access these services in the European Economic Area (EEA) and be repaid the cost under the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive. If you are a public healthcare patient and need treatment that is not available to you in Ireland, you may be able to use the Treatment Abroad Scheme to get the treatment in another country in the EEA or Switzerland. The Scheme may provide help with travel costs for the patient and a travelling companion, where appropriate. You must be referred for treatment abroad by an Irish-based consultant who is treating you as a public patient. You cannot refer yourself or be referred by a GP. You, and your referring consultant, must complete an application form and include a copy of your referral letter. Your application must be approved by the Health Service Executive (HSE) before you travel or start treatment abroad. You will get a decision on your application by letter, usually within 15 to 20 working days. If your application is not approved, you will be told the reasons and given information on how to appeal the decision. If your application is approved, the HSE will issue a form called S2 (also known as E112). This authorises treatment abroad so that you do not have to make any payment to the healthcare provider. The treatment you have abroad must be in public healthcare under a registered medical practitioner in a recognised hospital or other institution that accepts the form S2. If you don’t have the S2 at your appointment, you may be charged and not be refunded. Any treatments or consultations that are not pre-approved will not be covered. For an application form, contact the Treatment Abroad Scheme Office. You can get the contact details for your area by calling the HSE Infoline on Callsave 1850 24 1850 or online at hse.ie/treatmentabroad. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

WIDESPREAD SHOCK AT THE SUDDEN LOSS OF ‘WONDERFUL LADY’ MARY COURTNEY COMMUNITIES in Milltown and Killarney were plunged into mourning this week after the sudden passing of Mary Courtney of Listry and Milltown on Wednesday evening. Described as a “wonderful lady” by her family and friends, Mary was hugely popular, with a great sense of humour. Well known for her natural and wit and wisdom, Mary loved to share her sayings. Those who knew her described how uplifting it was to meet Mary. Mary would always greet you with a pleasant smile and a hello. She enjoyed having cups of tea and conversations with the people she met on her shopping outings to her favourite town, Killarney. “A mother with a heart of gold, honest and generous, she had a fantastic love for her family,” stated Mary’s heartbroken family.

The late Mary Courtney.

“It is fitting that a woman of her qualities will be laid to rest on Mother’s Day.” Requiem Mass is at 11.15am in Sacred Heart Church, Milltown. Mary is survived by her deeply saddened and adoring family, Denis, Jamie, Bernadette, Rosemarie and Elaine. May Mary rest in peace.

Motivational talk by ultra marathon runner Dave O’Brien DO YOU need some motivation or inspiration to help you in your Quest for Adventure this March? Come along to a free motivational evening with special guest speaker, ultra marathon runner Dave O’Brien. You will be inspired by his incredible stories, his passion for healthy living and how he defines fitness v health. Dave has run over 500 races, appeared on two TV survival shows and climbed the seven highest peaks in Ireland in only 23 hours 28 minutes – a record that still stands to this day. In December 2010 Dave returned from Antarctica where he completed the last of the four 250km endurance races as part of ‘Racing the Planet, Four Deserts Series’. Earlier that year he had completed the other three races in the Gobi, Atacama and Sahara deserts. Dave is the only Irishman ever and, at 56 years of age, the oldest man on the planet to have completed the Four Deserts series. The film Desert Runners premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2013, and heavily features Dave O’Brien. The free talk is being organised in association with Juice Plus Killarney and our friends at Quest Adventure Series to coincide with their Quest Killarney March Adventure Race on March 12. It takes place in The Gleneagle Hotel at 7.15pm on Friday, March 11, during registration for the Quest Killarney March Adventure Race.

update

A Tale of Two Houses

The Kenmares of Killarney

THE preview opening of the ornamental gardens on April 3 brings us closer to the long-awaited reopening of Killarney House. Or does it? What we now call Killarney House is a converted stable block of Kenmare House, built by Valentine Browne, the third Viscount Kenmare, in 1726. Killarney House was an extravagant mansion built by the fourth Earl of Kenmare on a site apparently chosen by Queen Victoria during her 1861 visit. A red-brick Elizabethan Revival manor that dominated its Knockreer setting, the original Killarney House was a vast creation, still unfinished in 1879 when fire caused extensive damage worth £2,000. The Kenmares moved to the Isle of Wight until the 1890s, returning to Killarney House to continue the family tradition of entertaining celebrities, including royalty. Fire struck Killarney House again in 1913, but this was one fire too many for the Kenmares, who abandoned the ruined house and remodelled the stables of the 18th-century Kenmare House. Confusingly, this is the current Killarney House. It was here that Tim O’Donoghue of New Street got a job in 1914, as a reward for saving the life of Valentine Edward Kenmare (Lord Castlerosse) when they both served in the Irish Guards during World War I. Thus started a family tradition, with Tim’s son Paddy working as a butler for the Kenmare family, and his son Harry working on the estate under various employers from 1986 until today. Indeed, the Kenmare estate employed many in Killarney. Horses drew timber for sale to Dublin during World War II, when coal was not available. A six-acre orchard was connected to the main estate via a tunnel under the main road. Up to 40 gardeners were employed. Locals also worked threshing oats and wheat in the Half-Moon field, as well as rearing pigeons for dinner tables in the dovecote, one of only a few such buildings in the country. It was not all work: There was great excitement in Killarney when the flamboyant Lord Castlerosse returned from England with his new bride in 1943. A huge bonfire blazed at the Golden Gates to greet the newly-weds, with porter and music flowing that evening in the estate garage for the locals. The title Earl of Kenmare became extinct in 1952, and the last earl’s niece, Beatrice Grosvenor, sold the estate in the 1950s, thus starting a new chapter in the story of Killarney House.

John Lonergan takes centre stage in Killarney TIPS on parenting were the talking point in Killarney last week as the parents council of Gaelscoil Faithleann hosted the inspiring speaker, and former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan. John, a father and grandfather, delivered an inspiring talk at the school, sharing his insights garnered from years of professional and of course personal experience, on how parents can guide and nurture their child. “John spoke in his funny and memorable style to a very attentive audience,” said the secretary of the parents council, Mary Carroll. According to John there are two questions we should ask ourselves: Are my kids healthy? and Are my kids happy? Staying positive and praising your child is very important. John's book, Parenting: Raising your child in Ireland Today, is now on sale, with proceeds going to Barnardos. “It was a lovely social occasion for parents as well as a source of very useful information,” added Mary.

Killarney Advertiser 04.02.16

ALL are welcome to the opening of a Community Garden of Remembrance in Killarney on Tuesday, March 15. The committee of St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne is organising the grand opening, which takes place at 11am. The garden will have three elements – an engraved lifesize replica of the 1916 Proclamation, a flagpole with the Tricolour, and seven trees to represent the seven signatories of the Proclamation. The MC for the event will be Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and a number of local schools will participate. “This is a great addition to Killarney. We hope it will be a nice place for people to visit in this historic year and for the next 100 years,” said Helen Sheehan of the St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne committee. The 1916 Gardens of Remembrance Ireland and her diaspora is a Glór na Cásca Infinitive with the objective of commemorating the Easter Rising, celebrating and honouring the lives of those who signed the Proclamation and those who fought in the cause of Irish freedom. Glór na Cásca includes representatives from all political parties and groups as well as trade union, cultural and Irish language representatives and descendants of the men and women who participated in the Rising. “These gardens will also ensure public engagement on a local and global level for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising,” said Senator Mark Daly, Oireachtas member of Glór na Cásca.

Hoteliers Right On Track For Successful Year HOTELIERS and guesthouse owners reported a very positive start to the year when they gathered for the Irish Hotels Federation conference in The Gleneagle Hotel this week. The vast majority of Irish hoteliers are upbeat about the prospects for the tourism industry in 2016 according to an industry survey carried out by the federation. With overseas visitor numbers to Ireland on track for a record-breaking year, overall confidence levels among hoteliers are at a near all-time high. Some 92% of respondents indicate a positive outlook for trading conditions for their business over the next twelve months. Nationally, 82% of hoteliers are seeing an increase in business levels compared to this time last year – building on increases in business levels across the sector over the previous two years. Advance bookings for the remainder of the year are also performing strongly, with 80% of premises reporting an increase on 2015 levels. Of those hotels catering for corporate meetings and business events, 64% are seeing an increase in this area of their business compared with last year. The upturn in tourism is directly feeding into increased confidence on the ground with hotel and guesthouse owners now in a stronger position to invest in their businesses. Results of the survey show that 93% of hoteliers are planning to invest in refurbishment and product development over the next 12 months while 62% are planning to increase their investment in marketing. IHF President Stephen McNally says: “Irish tourism has achieved strong growth over the last three years and the benefits of this are now spreading throughout the entire country. We’re seeing an upturn across most rural areas, providing a welcome boost to local economies in terms of jobs and tourism revenues.”

Driving Innovation was the theme of the annual IHF conference in The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney and it was all aboard on Monday as Patrick O'Donoghue, Breffni Ingerton, Stephen McNally, Dalata Group and President, IHF, and Tim Fenn, CEO IHF arrived by locomotive: Pictures: Don MacMonagle

Saddle up for whip-smart production of Calamity Jane

Members of Killarney Musical Society getting set to present Calamity Jane.

WE CAUGHT up with members of Killarney Musical Society this week as they put the finishing touches to a show that will have you singing in the aisles. The society presents its 31st production, Calamity Jane, at the INEC Killarney from Wednesday, March 9, to Friday, March 11. “This year’s show is a fun, family show which will have you tapping your feet, and singing the songs as you leave!” said society PRO Jessica Murphy. Calamity Jane, who is being played by Michelle O’Callaghan, can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood. Hard. Boastful and desperate to impress, Calamity travels to Chicago to recruit a star, Adelaide Adams, for the Deadwood Stage. But alas, things don't go too smoothly for Calamity, as everyone in town favours the new girl and she struggles to keep her pride and jealously in check. It takes her long-standing enemy, Wild Bill Hickok, played by Derek O’Leary, to make her see sense, and realise her true secret love... This year, Killarney Musical Society is working with a new production team of director Killian Collins, musical director John O'Brien and choreographer Sarah Griffin. “A show like this would not be able to go ahead without the endless support of our patrons, sponsors and especially our main sponsor, Independent Irish Health Foods, for which we are very grateful,” added Jessica. The cast of over 50 people, along with the backstage and front-of-house crew, are working extremely hard to put on a show we hope you will all enjoy. Tickets are available on the INEC website, box office and on Ticketmaster.

Who Will Beat The Kube? SPORTS stars, teachers, students and a host of celebrities will go to battle to win €2,000 for charity. In a first for the town, CBS, The Green in Tralee will welcome The Kube, sponsored by Lee Strand Protein+ Milk and Moriarty Construction, to the Brandon Hotel and Conference Centre, on March 16 at 7.30pm. Thirty-six contestants will battle it out on the night to win €2,000 for their designated charity. The contestants include sport stars James O’Donoghue, Kieran Donaghy, Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper, Aidan O’Mahony, Marc O Se, Alan Brogan, Barry John Keane, Tomas O Se, Darran O’Sullivan, Donnacha Walsh, Tommy Walsh and Tweak Griffin. Teachers and pupils will also battle out with Radio Kerry’s Elaine Kinsella, Andrew Morrissey and a host of celebrities on the night. The event is expected to sell out quickly with tickets priced at €15 for adults and €10 for students. Tickets can be purchased at Nolan’s Garage, NCR, Tralee, The Grand Hotel, Claude Montes, Foley’s Spar, Castlemaine Road, Tralee, Terry’s Butchers, Oakpark, Tralee, EF Signs, Monavalley, Tralee and are also available in reception in CBS, The Green. School principal Anne O’Callaghan thanked the main sponsors for the event Lee Strand Protein+ Milk and Moriarty Construction and the event’s heat sponsors, Nolan’s Garage, Top Part, Ryall Travel, Quilter Bros, Power’s Travel and the Muckross Park Hotel, Killarney. St Brendan’s are Corn Uí Mhuirí champions CONGRATULATIONS to St Brendan’s College which claimed its first Corn Uí Mhuirí since 2010 and its 21st overall when overpowering High School Clonmel at Mallow on Saturday. The Killarney side triumphed on a scoreline of 5-21 to 0-7. The Tipp side, who defeated Rochestown in the semi-final, were looking for their first win in the final since the inaugural final in 1928 but they were no match for the Killarney side in the final. Two goals within 30 seconds of each other soon after the start from Evan Cronin and Michael Casey set the "Sem" on their way and a third goal before the break from David Clifford, left the winners leading by an almost unassailable twelve points margin at the interval, 3-10 to 0-6. A string of points on the restart from the likes of Evan Cronin, David Clifford, David Shaw and Lee O’Donoghue ensured that there would be no fightback from the Tipp boys and two further goals from Donnchadh O’Sullivan and William Courtney were the icing on the cake for the new champions. St Brendan's now play St Benildus of Dublin in the semi-final on March 16. The Hogan Cup final is scheduled for April 2.

Jack B Yeats inspires young Killarney artists

Raymond celebrates two decades of service

KILLARNEY’S aspiring young painters got in the frame as they recreated the Jack B Yeats classic painting Liffey Swim. The group, taught by artist Tina Reed, learned much from studying the famous masterpiece during Tina’s mid-term course. “It was the most detailed painting we have done so far and I was blown away by the whole experience!” said Tina. “I like to work from famous paintings, and I usually find that more detailed paintings suit children and young people well. I will give help with setting out the painting and the drawing, and I will have an assistant with me, so the end result should look like the famous masterpiece! However the main focus will be having fun with paint, and getting everyone to really look at the painting.” Tina also gives her young protégés an insight into he history behind each painting as well as the artist’s life story. “It is all done step-by-step, so I will demonstrate each part as we go along, so everyone can follow the techniques and the colours used,” said Tina.

STAFF and management at Tricel, Killarney, congratulated their colleague Raymond Moriarty who celebrated 20 years of service with the company this week. Glencar native Raymond has lived in Killarney for over two decades and works in production at the company

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is hosting its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition. Here Jill Duggan explains how toning tables can help you streamline your body

WHEN used passively, the toning tables provide relaxation for the user and also stimulate circulation, whilst re-training the muscles in functional movement patterns and preventing the muscles from atrophying. By using the toning tables actively, you can safely experience even faster improvements to muscle strength, mobility, balance and co-ordination, weight and inch loss. In addition, you can be assured of an all over body workout specifically designed to exercise all major muscle groups. Inch loss is guaranteed. It all began back in the early 1930s when Bernard H Stauffer

began to work on a technique that he called Induced Rhythmic Motion (IRM). IRM was proven to greatly improve muscle tone and circulation while also improving strength and agility. Today as our own understanding of the human body develops so must our approach to exercise. Doctors and physiotherapists have long recognised the benefits of repetitive rhythmic movement as a form of rehabilitation. We support this process, providing a safe exercise option, which is time and cost effective, and is able to greatly and speedily enhance the benefits gained from a rehabilitation or physiotherapy program. Come and “enjoy” your exercise – whether you want to tone up, maintain/improve your mobility, feel better and make new friends – we look forward to welcoming you. We offer a free trial call 064-6632966 for bookings.

FREE EARWAX REMOVAL FOR OVER-55S IN KILLARNEY

HIDDEN HEARING at Unit 5, Scott Street, Killarney, is offering free professional earwax removal to persons over 55 years of age on Friday, March 11. Clients will also receive a free hearing screening to further diagnose or rule out any hearing issues. The procedure is performed by a hearing care professional who has received specialist training in both ear irrigation and dry mopping from Aston University in Birmingham. Hidden Hearing is the only hearing professional company to offer the wax removal service.

Earwax is a naturally occurring substance in the ear canal and helps to keep ears healthy and prevent infection. In most cases, earwax works its way out of the ear on its own; however, if it is blocking the ear canal and causing hearing loss it may need removing. Hidden Hearing is now offering a free service to check the health of the ears and identify excessive earwax. Speaking about the service, Hidden Hearing marketing director Dolores Madden said: “We are delighted to be offering this service to our customers in Killarney as we see a lot of people in our clinics with earwax build-up. In many cases, an aural issue will not be hearing loss related, but simply a build-up of too much earwax. However, if left untreated, excessive earwax can cause hearing loss and interfere with a hearing test or the use of a hearing aid. Until now the options have been expensive costing up to €60 but now Hidden Hearing offers a free solution for over 55s.” To book an appointment contact Hidden Hearing on 1800 882 884. Check www.hiddenhearing.ie for further details.

Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper, slip them into the pan, and cook until they are well browned on all sides. When the chicken is deeply golden, transfer it to a platter and keep it in a warm place while you work on the vegetables. Pour off all but two tablespoons of the cooking fat from the pan. Lower the heat to medium, add the butter, onions, shal-

lots, garlic, and thyme, and cook and stir just until the vegetables start to take on a little colour. Add the potatoes, carrots, celeriac and bacon and cook for about five minutes. Cover the pan and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and return the chicken to the pan. Add the chicken stock, bring to the boil. Bake, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes.

SEA FOLKLORE BROUGHT TO LIFE IN KERRY CALLING all fans of animation – in celebration of the Irish release of Cartoon Saloon's film Song of the Sea in the summer of 2015, Butler Gallery presented an interactive, multi-media exhibition of original drawings, prints, storyboards, animation, music and scene-realisation. Siamsa Tíre is delighted that this exhibition will now travel to Tralee where it was officially opened by Rory Conway of Cartoon Saloon. Song of the Sea is a visually stunning and moving story of Ben and his little sister Saoirse – the last Seal-child – who embark on a fantastic journey across a fading world of ancient legend and magic in an attempt to return to their home by the sea. The film takes inspiration from the mythological selkies of folklore, who live as seals in the sea but become humans on land. The film skilfully mixes the magical and the everyday in a way that will enthral viewers of all ages, young and old. Drawing is at the core of this art form and the hand-drawn elegance of Song of the Sea is what sets it apart, along with the ex-

quisite watercolours that serve as vibrant backdrops to the animated action. This multi-media exhibition, designed by industrial design studio Designgoat, provides an imaginative and accessible viewing of Cartoon Saloon’s movie-making process. A diverse selection of original working drawings by the studio team reveal the multiplicity of processes involved in the realisation of an animated film. Song of the Sea, directed by Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells) features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Fionnula Flanagan, David Rawle, Lisa Hannigan, Pat Shortt and Jon Kenny. Music is by composer Bruno Coulais and Irish band Kila, both of whom previously collaborated on The Secret of Kells.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 15:1-3, 11-32: Like many a parable, this story makes its point in what seems to be unfair: the spendthrift son is rewarded and the elder son is hurt and angry. Jesus is telling us that love is a free gift, not something we earn by our goodness. When have you experienced this truth in the love you have received from others? When has the experience of human love prompted you to reflect on God’s love for you? After some time the younger son “came to himself” and returned home. Where and when have you experienced a homecoming after a time of exile and alienation? What helped you to come to yourself and make that journey home? The older son resented the welcome given to the younger son after his wandering and dissolute life. This contrasts with the welcome the father gave the younger son. Perhaps you have experienced these differing attitudes in yourself. What were they like for you? Where was there life for you or for others? John Byrne OSA

MUSINGS

IN REFLECTING upon the parable of the Prodigal Son, the spiritual writer Henri Nouwen once wrote: "Perhaps the most radical statement Jesus ever made is 'Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate'. God’s compassion is described by Jesus not simply to show me how willing God is to feel for me, or to forgive my sins and offer me new life and happiness, but to invite me to become like God and to show the same compassion to others … I am destined to step into my Father’s place and offer to others the same compassion that he has offered me. The return to the Father is ultimately the challenge to become the Father.” Salvador Ryan

HOME & AWAY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + VIEWS F IRISH WATER

The abolition of Irish Water by a new government would cost the State up to €7 billion over the next five years, according to internal estimates by the State-owned utility. The estimates envisage the losses occurring under four categories: cash costs, sunk costs, benefits forgone and the lost possibility of getting its debts off the exchequer’s books. With Ireland’s water and sewerage infrastructure in need of a multi-year investment programme costing well over €500 million a year, the issue will have a crucial impact on the incoming government’s ability to spend money on public services and/ or tax cuts. The cash costs have been estimated at about €100 million, and largely involve paying off staff who would not be transferred to local authorities. It would also include the cost of breaking leases and contracts, and the costs of transferring back the property already put into Irish Water ownership. Sunk costs are categorised as expenditure the value of which would be lost if the company was abolished or water charges ended. Some €500 million has been spent on the metering system, and another €170 million on establishing the financial, procurement and customer processing systems that Irish Water uses. The benefits forgone are the domestic water charges valued at €1.6 billion that would be collected in the period to 2021, and a further €1.6 billion in savings that are part of the utility’s business plan to 2021. The final issue is whether Irish Water’s borrowings could be kept off the State’s balance sheet, something that is decided on in Europe. At present the utility does not qualify, in large part because of the Government’s decision to give people water conservation grants. Without water charges, the utility cannot pass the Eurostat test. The achievement of savings, and an increase in domestic customers paying their water charges, which stands at about 63 per cent, will be key to passing the Eurostat test. Late-payment charges begin to apply from July. Our Irish water bill arrived the other day and it works out at 75c per day to supply our water needs and to remove waste water. I shudder to think what we would do without an adequate water supply and an efficient waste water service. I know we pay property tax, refuse charges and the hated USC on top of a myriad other taxes but, in my opinion, the water charge is reasonable. You see what you get unlike the USC which is anything but universal. However, if the water charges are abolished, I want my money back.

ELECTION 16 Isn’t it odd that after all the excitement of the election that nobody seems to want power bad enough to pay the price, at the going rate? All during the election, leaders were adamant they wouldn’t go into coalition with any other party and now they’re all stuck in the middle. It’s a grand statement to make when you’re trying to impress upon voters that the other guy is up to no good but when the voters put everyone in the same boat someone is going to have to pull out a political boathook to avoid disaster; otherwise everyone will float lazily downstream and over the waterfall into the whirlpool. Politics make strange bedfellows. While the dust still hasn’t settled, it’s obvious no one wants to do business with Sinn Féin. Neither Míchéal Martin or Enda Kenny will touch them with a barge pole. They don’t want to see Sinn Féin either in power or as the main opposition party. Yet they are the third-biggest party in the State & can’t be ignored. Sinn Féin is the elephant in the room and won’t go away but the other main parties say there is no room for the rogue elephant. They might want to think it out again. Obviously, the majority of the people voted for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael and it would seem the logical thing for them to settle whatever differences they may perceive to have and put the country first. Many people don’t see any difference between them & may not forgive them easily should they decide to play party politics. Only a combination of FF and FG can bring a workable majority to Dáil Éireann. Both parties sought power so now they must take a stand. Likewise, the Independents & Sinn Féin should stand up and be counted in an efficient & organised opposition. For far too long many of them have got away with opposing everything and proposing nothing. Now is their opportunity to ask the awkward questions. Fianna Fáil seems to prefer some kind of external association so beloved of their founder. They want clear space between them and everyone else. If they support Fine Gael , Sinn Féin will be the main Opposition, thereby positioning themselves nicely for government next time out. They also fear they would suffer the consequences of supporting Fine Gael, just as Labour has. Some in Fianna Fáil could tolerate supporting Fine Gael if Enda was history. I can see where they are coming from: Enda snapped defeat from the jaws of victory and stumbled all over the place quickly picking himself up and moving on as if nothing had happened, leaving mayhem in his wake. I think that when Enda looks over his shoulder to see if the boys are still there, he’ll find they’re gone and he’s not the Leader anymore. That could make things easier for FF. However, having played a blinder during the campaign, Míchéal Martin is off on a solo run of reforming procedures in the Dáil. Maybe it’s not before time. But now may not be the right time. In Kerry meanwhile, the Healy-Raes led the charge for change but Fianna Fáil will be happy to have a seat in the Kingdom and Bredan Griffin did well to hold his seat in spite of the backlash against his party. The way things are working out, two real Independents could play a pivotal role. Ireland needs a credible party of the Left. Or a few sound Independents.

Fossa access case put back ‘to let tempers cool’ THE future of Fossa Rowing Club was in doubt after its members lost a claim for a right of way across farmland which leads to its clubhouse on Lough Leane, reports Anne Lucey in the Irish Examiner. Fossa Rowing Club has effectively been shut down after its members lost the claim last week, the court has been told. In 2011, it sued Cornelius A Dennehy for a right of way to a “magnificent” club house it built on the shores of Lough Leane in 2012 — before it had obtained a right of way, the Circuit Civil Court was told in Killarney last week, reports Anne Lucey.

Killarney Advertiser 04.02.16

“The matter was adjourned to Tralee Circuit Civil Court to decide on costs and to allow the sides to come up with an access arrangement. However, the period was too short, the court was told,” according to the Irish Examiner report. “James Dwyer, counsel for Fossa Rowing Club, said it wanted time to clear the boat house and no order as to costs. There probably would be an appeal, and the status quo (i.e. pedestrian access) should remain in that event, Mr Dwyer suggested. “Elizabeth Murphy, for the Dennehys, said a period of some weeks was in order, to allow tempers to cool. She would want 72 hours' notice from the club to remove materials. “The issue of costs had been ventilated in July and named persons, five club trustees, put forward as plaintiffs.”

FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD BLOODY SUNDAY – 44 YEARS ON Up to 15 former paratroopers expect to be interviewed under caution by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in March, as part of a murder inquiry into events in 1972 that led to deaths of 13 civilians. The interviews will take place in England after lawyers acting for the soldiers won a judicial review last year that argued that it would be illegal to arrest any of the men at their homes without notice and remove them to custody in Northern Ireland. The news that the men face further questioning comes after lawyers for some of the former 1 Parachute Regiment members have been successful in seeking assurance that information gathered as part of the 12 year independent Saville inquiry will not be used as part of the criminal investigation. In 1999, the Attorney General granted all witnesses in the £195 million inquiry, immunity from prosecution on the grounds of self-incrimination. The PSNI have now said that police officers working on the investigation will not have the Saville material. The former soldiers will be questioned by police for murder and conspiracy to murder. Bloody Sunday was a landmark incident in three decades of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, during which more than 3,600 people died and thousands more injured. It proved a turning point in the IRA’s decision to wage a campaign of violence against British rule in Ulster, and a fertile rallying ground for new members. The independent inquiry, conducted by Lord Saville, began in 1988 and concluded in 2010. It found that by "firing by soldiers of 1 Para on Bloody Sunday caused the deaths of 13 people and injury to a similar number, none of whom was posing a threat of causing death or serious injury”. Criticism of the PSNI’s investigation into the events of 30 January, 1972, has focused on concerns the public naming of the soldiers involved could lead to violent reprisals. Detectives in County Antrim arrested and questioned a 66-year-old man, ‘Lance Corporal J’, in connection with the shootings in November last year. The move sparked a High Court battle on behalf of seven former soldiers - referred to as B, N, O, Q, R, U and V - who said they feared for their safety if they were extradited to Northern Ireland. Seven former soldiers have launched legal action in the High Court against a murder investigation into Bloody Sunday. The are: • Private B – possibly fired the shots which injured John Johnston, 59, who died four months later of his injuries • Lieutenant N – Commander of 1 Para’s Mortar Platoon, “probably” shot Michael Bridge, who survived. The Saville Inquiry found that by firing warning shots over protestors’ heads, he caused confusion among other soldiers who thought they were under attack, thus helping to trigger the bloodshed that followed • Sergeant O – Platoon sergeant of Mortar Platoon, one of three soldiers who might have shot and injured two survivors as they ran away • Private Q – Thought to have shot and injured survivor Michael Bradley while ‘in a state of fear or panic’ • Private R – thought to be the soldier who shot 17-year-old Jackie Duddy, the first person to die on Bloody Sunday. • Private U – named by the Saville Report as the soldier who killed Hugh Gilmour, 17, who was running away at the time • Corporal V – thought to have shot and injured survivor Margaret Deery, possibly while he was in a state of panic A panel of judges, including Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas, found “unhesitatingly” that the reasons advanced by the PSNI for their arrest and transfer "did not provide reasonable grounds" for the decision. They are among those facing questioning by investigators, despite one ex-Para warning the arrests were “politically motivated” and “fantastic PR” for the IRA. Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas described the case as “a matter of great public interest”. Each of the seven ex-soldiers had already cooperated with all previous proceedings and investigations, the panel said, from Lord Widgery’s 1971 inquiry to Lord Saville’s nearly three decades later. Moreover, Lord Thomas concluded, “the present position of the claimants is that each will exercise their right to silence in the interviews. "It is, in our view, almost impossible to foresee that any will depart from that position. The interviews are therefore likely to be short and straightforward. "If interviewed in Northern Ireland they would not be able to return to their homes during the interview period, but would have to be detained for their own safety in conditions of close custody. Even if so detained, there would remain a risk to their safety." One former Para said he feared that allowing soldiers to be questioned over events nearly half a century ago would have a negative influence on today’s military, who are expected increasingly to account for split-second decisions taken in the heat of battle.

Woman on trial in Russia says Allah ordered her to behead child A WOMAN suspected of beheading a child in her care before brandishing the severed head outside a Moscow metro station said on Wednesday Allah had ordered her to commit the crime. Police on Monday wrestled to the ground Gulchekhra Bobokulova, a 38-year-old divorced mother of three from the Muslim-majority ex-Soviet state of Uzbekistan, after she wandered around a Moscow street holding the infant's severed head in the air and shouting Islamist slogans. Eyewitnesses said at the time they believed she was carrying out a terrorist act, but since her detention, Russian investigators have raised the possibility she might be suffering from mental illness. Investigators said she had been working as a nanny for a Moscow family and that she had murdered and beheaded one of the children in her care before setting fire to the family flat and fleeing.

Oscar Pistorius's appeal has been dismissed A LAWYER acting for Oscar Pistorius has said South Africa's highest court has dismissed his appeal against his murder conviction, adding he will be sentenced for murder. South Africa's Constitutional Court has refused Oscar Pistorius the right to appeal against his conviction for the murder of his girlfriend. The country's highest court ruled he has no reasonable grounds of success. The former athlete now faces a possible minimum 15-year jail sentence for killing Reeva Steenkamp.

Call for ‘Catholic ethos’ to be continued in schools

Re-opening for evening meals Thursday 10th March Opening times Tuesday - Saturday 6-9.30pm

For Reservations Tel. 064-6634902 or email bricin@eircom.net

Young actors to help children from Chernobyl THE children of Rathmore parish present Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Rathmore Community Centre this Saturday, March 5, at 7.30pm and Sunday, March 6, at 3.30pm. Admission for adults is €8 and for children €4. The production is in aid of the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl, Rathmore branch. For further details and tickets contact Lorraine on 086-3481464 or Mags on 087-9498344.

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL member Cllr Donal Grady has called on the council to write to the Minister for Education and Skills requesting that that the Catholic ethos be continued within our pres- Cllr Donal Grady. ent Catholic schools in the Kerry area. Cllr Grady said: “If there is a need to respond to the needs of our times, which I believe there is, steps should then be taken to provide separate schools to embrace those with other religions and beliefs.” He added: “Catholic schools are regulated by the Department of Education and Skills through the national curriculum. They have provided education since the foundation of the State and before. They are rooted in local parish communities where they form a central part of everyday life. They hand on Christian values and a shared Irish culture to the next generation.” Cllr Grady noted: “Enrolment in our schools has increased over the last number of years with the huge inflow of new residents into our communities. People may have to choose the Catholic school because it is the only school in the locality and not because they wish their children to have a Catholic education. This can then cause difficulties for parents who do not share the ethos of a Catholic school. The state should have a plan for the provision of schools to facilitate these parents in providing their children with their desired religious education, in their own traditions and beliefs. “While all parents have both the duty and the right to educate their children, Catholic parents have also the duty and the right to choose schools that can best promote the Catholic education of their children. Catholic schools cannot relinquish its own freedom to provide a religious education in the Catholic faith, this is a right and duty.”

Information evening DO YOU know the contents of the websites your children are viewing? An information evening on this will take place at Ballyspillane Community & Family Resource Centre on Thursday, March 10, at 7pm. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend. Children in rehearsal for the production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

SLEEK NEWGENERATION RENAULT SCENIC RENAULT’S new fourth-generation Scenic peoplemover reveals a progressive new design that ties in with other Renault designs. Presenting a contemporary, mature exterior style including a front-end with Renault’s trademark double-element headlights, the five-door, five-seat people-mover was officially unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show on March 1. Based on the same platform architecture as the new Megane, the Scenic is powered by a similar range of small petrol and diesel four-cylinder engines.

2016 F1 season set to witness new qualifying format THE 2016 Formula One season is upon us and is set to feature a new qualifying format after the FIA proposal was unanimously accepted in order to increase the amount of action during qualifying. Scaling New Heights YOU would have been forgiven for thinking you had wandered onto the Alps should you have set foot on the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks at the weekend. Against a breath-taking backdrop, members of the hardworking Kerry Mountain Rescue Team took part in a major training exercise. Following 110 days of continuous rain, spring had sprung with snow and blue skies illuminating matters as the group perfected their winter skills. With the help of the Waterford-based Irish

Coast Guard helicopter, the voluntary rescue team honed techniques usually associated with the Highlands of Scotland as well as the French Alps. “It was the perfect day for the training,” said award-winning photographer Valerie O’Sullivan who captured the undertaking on camera in spectacular fashion. “Kerry Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary rescue team that provides a 24-7-365 oncall mountain rescue service in the mountains of southwest Ireland.”

Packed programme for Seachtain na Gaeilge in Kerry KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has unveiled a packed programme of events and initiatives for Seachtain na Gaeilge which runs from March 1 to 17. The local authority is promoting the use of Irish throughout the period and has announced a number of displays, competitions and community-based events, all of which is being promoted through a dedicated website, During Seachtain na Gaeilge, Kerry County Council will be promoting the use of Irish at all of the public counters in its offices around the county and magnetic signs have been affixed to a number of council vehicles bearing the message ‘Labhair Gaeilge Linn – Seachtain na Gaeilge.’ A 20-minute bilingual flash mob presentation based on the cultural revolution leading up to 1916 has been composed and is ready-made for performance by schools, local drama societies and community groups. ‘Tobshlua 1916’ is based

on orations, songs, and poetry from the period. Kerry County Council is also inviting participation in a window display competition, ‘Comórtas na bhFuinneog’ which carries a prize fund of €1,000 and is being run in conjunction with Conradh na Gaeilge and the Chambers of Commerce in each of the four municipal districts. Window displays on an Irish language theme should be photographed and submitted via the website. Kerry County Council’s chief executive, Moira Murrell, said it is fitting to celebrate the Gaelic Revival that took place in the period leading up to 1916 and so Kerry County Council plans to raise the profile of Irish among the public in Kerry by encouraging everyone to participate in Seachtain na Gaeilge. “As part of our publicity drive, the public will see ‘Labhair Gaeilge Linn!’ signage on many council vehicles around Kerry and at the public counters

at our offices, as well as our libraries. We are urging everyone in the county to get involved and to try a cúpla focail,” said Ms Murrell.

Above, launching the Kerry County Council programme of events for Seachtain na Gaeilge are Moira Murrell (chief executive), Cllr Pat McCarthy (cathaoirleach) and Roibeard Ó hEartáin (Oifigeach Forbartha Gaeilge).

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

YEAR OF MERCY PILGRIMAGE TO ROME DURING the month of February I had the privilege of travelling to Rome with a group of pilgrims to celebrate the Jubilee for St Pio prayer groups around the world. On our first afternoon we had a wonderful panoramic tour of Rome. It ended at Maria Maggiore Basilica, one of the first shrines dedicated to Our Lady with its magnificent mosaics and richly decorated ceiling. We visited the crypt of the Nativity which contains the relics of the manger in Bethlehem. We also had the opportunity to walk through the Basilica’s Holy Door. We celebrated the first Mass of our pilgrimage together in a side chapel. That night we waited outside the Church of San Salvador for the arrival of the caskets of St Pio and St Leopold Mandic. The little church was filled to capacity, so after the special Mass we filed in to pay our respects to the saints, who were in glass caskets. Next morning we walked in pilgrimage from Castel Sant’ Angelo the short distance to the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica. Inside the Basilica we had time to visit the side altars where the remains of Pope John 23 and St Pope John Paul lie. Later myself and some of the Kerry group had the privilege of accompanying the remains of St Pio

and St Leopold in procession from the church of San Salvador to St Peter’s Basilica. In the afternoon we went to the Irish College where the Dean, Rev Ciaran O’Carroll, welcomed us before Mass, outlining the history of the college and its association with our great Liberator, Daniel O’Connell. The Jubilee for Padre Pio’s prayer groups took place next morning in St Peter’s Square in brilliant sunshine. More than 800,000 pilgrims thronged the Square, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Pope Francis. He sped around in his popemobile, stopping here and there to greet pilgrims and bless the sick. In his homily to the prayer groups he quoted St Pio who said that

prayer is a force that moves the whole world and spreads the smile and blessing of God over every languor and weakness. “It’s true,” said Pope Francis. “Try it!” That afternoon we travelled to the Basilica of St John Lateran and some of us had the opportunity to engage in the age-old tradition of climbing the holy stairs in the nearby church on our knees. This gave us a plenary indulgence. Our Mass on Sunday morning was in St Patrick’s Church, centre of the Augustinians in Rome. We filled the church with a chorus of hail Glorious St Patrick before leaving. The last Basilica we visited was the impressive St Paul outside the walls which houses the remains of St Paul

under its main altar. When we walked through its Holy Door we saw along the nave of the Basilica, mosaics of all the popes, starting with St Peter and ending with Pope Benedict. This was one of my most memorable pilgrimages to Rome. Since St Pio appeared to me on two occasions, I have been taking pilgrimages for the past number of years to San Giovanni Rotondo where St Pio spent most of his life. I also have a first-class relic of the saint and there have been many miracles and healings through his intercession. I can be contacted at 087-2677656. Michael O’Connor, Killarney

In loving memory of Jenelle Maria O’ Connor Hickey who died on the 7th March 2006. Don’t think of her as gone away, Her journey’s just begun, Life holds so many facets, This earth is only one. Just think of her as resting, From the sorrows and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Through all the days and years. Think how she must be wishing That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of her as living, In the hearts of those she touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And she is loved so much. Love you always and forever Your Uncle Alan, Pia and your baby cousin Bella.

In loving memory of Jenelle Maria O’ Connor Hickey. O precious tiny sweet little one you will always be to me, so perfect pure and innocent just as you were meant to be. We dreamed of you and of your life and all that it would be, we waited and longed for you to come and join our family. We never had the chance to play, to laugh to rock to wiggle, we long to hold you, touch you now and listen to you giggle. I will always be your mother, he’ll always be your Dad, you will always be our child, the child that we had. But now you’re gone...but yet you’re here, we’ll sense you everywhere, you are our sorrow and our joy, there’s love in every tear. Just know our love goes deep and strong, we’ll forget you, never. The child we had, but never had and yet we’ll have forever. You will always be with us every step of the way. We will Love you Always Jenelle Love Mum & Dad & your sisters Alyson and Laura. XXX

MUSIC: Our Music County Finals took place in Keel on Saturday last with a huge entry in this competition. We had thirty solo participants and seventeen groups perform for us. SINGING: Our Singing County Finals also took place at the weekend in Abbeydorney Community Centre – this, similar to our Music Competition, was a very large and popular competition.

Many thanks again to our organisers Spa/Fenit/Barrow Committee and our adjudicators whose job wasn’t made easy by the singing talents by our participants who entertained us with top class singing for over three hours – an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon! UNDER U10 BOYS INDOOR SOCCER:- On Sunday last, we also had our Under 10 Indoor Soccer County Finals which were played in two venues – Duagh Sports & Leisure Complex and the Nagle Rice Community Centre in Milltown. MILLTOWN: The southern section of the competition was held in Nagle Rice Community Centre in Milltown. The morning group included six teams Beaufort, Fossa, Kenmare, Killarney South, Rathmore/Gneeveguilla and Spa/Fenit/Barrow. This section was divided into two groups of three with Beaufort and Kenmare emerging victorious from each of their groups. They then played each other to decide who would qualify from the morning session and this turned out to be a very exciting and tense game. They drew 2-2 after full time and this was still the case after extra time. It then went to penalties and Beaufort came out on top. It was hard luck on Kenmare. In the afternoon session, there were five teams competing - An Gaeltacht, Annascaul/Camp/Inch, Milltown/Listry, Spa Muckross and Valentia. This section was played on a found robin basis with all teams playing each other. It looked like Milltown/Listry were in pole position after winning their first two games but they were beaten in their next game by An Gaeltacht which turned out to be the crucial game. An Gaeltacht improved with each game, drawing their first and then winning their remaining three games, FINALS: Well done to all our teams, and we look forward to next Sunday when we will have our northern winners Ballybunion and Brosna playing the southern region winners An Gaeltacht and Beaufort in Milltown in round robin format for the County title – with sign in at 1pm. Club Captain Liam Hartnett, was delighted to strike his first Golf Stroke in a competition for over three months, in last weekend’s “mixed foursomes” Our Club are most indebted to our sponsors, without them, we just simply could not afford to run our competitions, they are really the “life’s blood” of our ability to continue to be able to provide such magnificent prizes to our competition winners and other prize recipients. Thank you to all of our Sponsors. The Competition was won by the pairing of Maureen Creedon and Gerard O’Meara, with a magnificent score of 37 points, they were the clear winners, and Gerard in his brief acceptance speech was magnanimous in his praise for the condition of the course, despite the inclement weather conditions. A former Club Captain, when asked as to the playing conditions remarked that “they were horrendous, the par 4s were par 5s, and the par 5s were par 6s at least, and the 13th if we were playing to the actual green rather than the current temporary green which is in play, would have been at least a par 7.!!! The other prize winners were 2nd Liz and Eamonn O’Connor with 35 points, 3rd were Ursula Daly and Dermot Roche with 33 points, they won on the better back 6 holes, and 4th were Mary and Derry O’Connor with a better back three holes than those in 5th place. Best Gross was won by Christine and Denis O’Carroll with 24 points. Captain Liam and his partner Eimear O’Donnell returned a creditable 31 points, and in taking the weather conditions, once again, into account the turnout

Congrats to Lilie Foley who has won the first Gold for the area in U16 solo singing. This is a great achievement and we wish her well in the national finals. Congrats also to Jean Foley who was third in the group Singing Competition. U10 INDOOR SOCCER: Well done to the U10 Boys who competed in the County U10 Indoor Soccer Finals on Sunday. In the first game they came up against a physically strong Beaufort team. Goals from Liam Hennigan and Szijmon Kieptus in the game but Beaufort ran out winners in the end. In the second game two early goals from Rathmore / Gneeveguilla left us with a mountain to climb but Killarney South played brilliant soccer and two superb goals from Briain O’Shea and Szijmon brought the teams level. Excellent defending from Ronan Fahy and Sennan Cotter combined with great goal-keeping from Noah and Adiel earned us a fully deserved draw and the never-say-die attitude was brilliant to see. Well done to all the Boys who were excellent on the day and thanks also to Milltown Community Centre for hosting the event and to Denis O’Mahony for his excellent refereeing and explaining the rules to the Boys. Well done to all!

Cougars increased the lead to six points with baskets by Killian Caufiled Drier but had to withstand a strong last qtr by the visitors to secure the points with Rocco Sheehan finishing the scoring for the Cougars in a great team performance for the good attendance at the Presentation Gym. Girls U17 Div 1 Killarney Cougars 50 Gneeveguilla 20 Cougars despite a slow start finished strongly and again enjoyed a comfortable winning margin over Gneeveguilla with the points well secured before the finish. Cougars Academy Training Fridays Parish Hall Girls 5pm & Boys 6pm Ages U8 & U10. All welcome. Senior News Senior Ladies Cup Semi-final Killarney Cougars 29 Caherciveen 26 A great attendance at the Pres Gym saw Killarney just edge out Caherciveen a tough defensive contest in this Cup Semi-final. Cougars trailed early on but finished the quarter well with baskets by Ciara Meaney giving Cougars a three point lead. Cougars thanks to Emer O’Shea and Caroline Kelly led by four points at half time. Caherciveen finally got on top of the home side in their best spell of the game with good baskets by Clodagh Quinlan, Sinead Sheehan, Linda Cronin and Lisa O’Sullivan to lead 19-18. The final quarter was a tense period with the lead changing hands throughout but Cougars hit the front in the last minute with Fiona McSweeney on target from the free throw-line with two points and Caherciveen missing good opportunities from the free throw line and Cougars Ciara Meaney scoring the final basket to give Cougars a very hard earned win a very entertaining finish to the game. Senior Ladies Div 1 Killarney Cougars 53 Tralee Imperials 50 League leaders Killarney maintained their great run in the league but the Cougars had to stage a comeback in the final quarter to overcome a strong challenge from Imperials. Cougars had an impressive 18-12 first quarter lead with two three pointers each by Cassandra Buckley and Marian O’Callaghan but suffered a blow as they lost through injury the influential Sinead O’Connell. Imperials had a huge improvement in the second quarter to lead by half time 32 - 25 as they dominated this period thanks to good play by of Sinead Mackessy and Grainne Quigley for the visitors as the Killarney ladies struggled

to maintain the first quarter tempo as they lost their early grip of the game. The third quarter was very evenly balanced but the visitors Imperials continued to hold on their advantage to frustrate Cougars and stay ahead 43 36 entering the final quarter. Throughout the season the Killarney ladies have proved to be resilient and unbeaten at home in the league they again found a great response to finish the game as they started with three pointers by Chloe O’Doherty, Cassandra Buckley and Mags Cronin to take the lead. Despite strong pressure from Imperials they couldn’t get the scores as Cougars pushed ahead and defended well with Allyson Caggio and Emer O’Neill both strong on the boards throughout the game. Cougars now ahead remained composed in the closing minutes and finished with another three pointer by Marian O’Callaghan to secure the points in a very entertaining game a win that keeps Killarney top of the league with the two games remaining. KERRY MASTERS TOURNAMENT Tralee was the venue for the 2016 Kerry Masters, the tournament and charity fundraising event in Aid of local Special Olympics and the Killarney Cougars Mens again contributed to a good tournament to again contest the final. Cougars came through the group stages with a good win over Sussex to reach the semi-finals to take on the group winners Kilkenny who knocked out Galway and the Cougars again came through a great game with Cougars edging it by just three points to reach the final. The Cougars panel was injury hit by time of the final Sunday evening and in a repeat of last years final the fancied Trailblazers Cork came through to retain their title. Killarney Celtic

Celtic Park to Host U18 International Celtic Park has been announced as the host venue for the U18 Centenary Shield Match between Ireland and Scotland on Thursday, April 14th. This is a great honour for the club and testament to the standard of our facilities and the hard work done by wonderful volunteers on previous occasions. Managers’ Meeting A meeting for ALL MANAGERS of Killarney Celtic will take place on March 5th.The meeting will give managers a chance to network, to give reviews of their season to date, to get briefings on welfare, media and club development. Attendance compulsory. Club Shop Our range of Celtic gear has been updated and is now available from the club shop on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2.00pm. Contact Mary Lyne 086-6485809 or Mags O’Neill on 087 6451913 for enquiries. 40th Anniversary Commemorations Our Club has a big birthday when it turns 40 this year. To help mark the occasion and to preserve our history for future Killarney Celtic generations, we will shortly be compiling a Digital Archive of club photos, news reports, memorabilia etc. That will require current and past members to rummage out whatever you might have in display cases, old biscuit tins and photo albums. We’ll be publishing more details here and via the press on the project and how you can get us your materials (and get them safely back). Results As always, fixtures are only provisional and we advise players and supporters to confirm with managers or check our facebook page on match day for confirmation. Munster Junior Cup: Killarney Celtic 1 Shannon 0 (AET) This was a brilliant game to watch, despite a stiff and swirling breeze, with two superb teams almost perfectly matched. Shannon probably edged the first

half narrowly, while Celtic were the better side in the second, and completely dominated the last quarter of an hour as Shannon began to run out of steam – the game was played at a very high tempo all through. Celtic lost defensive linchpin Brian Spillane to injury but management and players remained calm and focused, with Gary Keane dropping back and Joe Hurley stepping seamlessly into midfield. We couldn’t break through, though, and the game entered extra time. Celtic were still on top and finally made the breakthrough, Conor Randall deftly flicking a long ball from Jamie Spillane to the net for a superb goal. Shannon, buoyed by their enthusiastic and friendly supporters, battled bravely to the end but couldn’t close the deficit. Best for Celtic? Everybody. But Gary Keane, Chris O’Leary, and Peter McCarthy have to get special mention; they were awesome. U16 Premier: Killarney Celtic 3 Castleisland 1 James Lynch put us in front before the break and Josh Fleming and Micheal Devlin came off the bench to clinch the win in the second half. U15 Kerry Cup: Killarney Celtic B 3 Asdee 3 (Celtic win 8-7 on penalties) Adam Kissane (penalty), Jared Barton, and Lorcan Martins got our goals and we were unlucky not to win it in normal time – credit to the Asdee keeper from a brilliant save of a well-struck Tommy McGuire penalty late on. Celtic went on to win 5-4 on penalties. Best for an excellent Celtic were Tommy McGuire, Jared Barton, Matthew May, and Jack McCarthy. U13 Cup: St Brendans Park B 0 Killarney Celtic B 3 Erin Moloney had us leading 1-0 at the break and Ruairi Dorrian and Erin wrapped it up after the break. Harry White and Sean Michael Coffey were excellent for Celtic. Congratulations to U13 player Harry White on making the Kerry Schoolboys/Schoolgirls Team of the Week. Fixtures Denny Premier: Killarney Celtic at home to Mastergeeha, Friday, 7.30pm U16 Div One: Killarney Celtic B at home to St. Brendans Park B, Saturday, 2.30pm U14 Kerry Cup: Killarney Celtic B away to Castleisland, Saturday, 11.00am U14 Kerry Plate: Killarney Celtic B away to Fenit Samphires, Saturday, 1.30pm U12 Girls: Killarney Celtic at home to Inter Kenmare, Friday, 5.30pm U12 Premier: Killarney Celtic at home to Castleisland, Saturday, 1.00pm U12 Kerry Cup: Killarney Celtic B at home to St. Brendans Park B, Saturday, 10.30pm U12 Kerry Cup: Killarney Celtic C at home to Tralee Dynamos, Saturday, 11.45am Lotto Numbers drawn 2, 3, 14, 20. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

OPENING WIN OF THE LEAGUE FOR KERRY IN NEWRY KERRY footballers got their first points in this year’s Allianz Football League when a vastly improved performance saw them easily dispose of a disappointing Down side in Newry on Sunday last (0-22 to 0-6). Kerry dominated the game for long periods and once they began to take their chances in the second quarter there was only going to be one winner. Indeed they could have improved their scoring difference even more had they taken some of the goal chances that came their way but all-in-all the Kerry management must have been quite happy with the performance given that the team that featured was a somewhat experimental one. There are of course greater hurdles ahead but nevertheless, this was a welcome victory and no doubt, Kerry followers everywhere were delighted to see Colm Cooper back on the field of play.

Donegal are next up in the Allianz Football League

Unbeaten Donegal are Kerry’s opponents in Round 4 of the Allianz League at the revamped Austin Stack Park on Sunday next where the second game in the double bill will throw in at 2:30. The northern outfit have been pretty impressive in their victories over Down (17 points),

Currow

Coiste Na nÓg U16: The U16 team played their first game of 2016 vs. Cordal/Scartaglen in the Castleisland District League last Sunday 28th February in Cordal GAA Pitch. Cordal/Scartaglen were too strong for our team but Currow never gave up during the match, the game ended on a score line of Cordal/ Scartaglen 9-08 Currow 2-05. They are due to play Ballymac away this coming Sunday 6th march in Ballymac at 12pm. Please check with club officers, subject to change. U14: We are placed in division six of the county league. Their fixtures are as follows. Round 1 30/3/16 Keel/Listry v Currow Round 2 06/4/16 Currow v Gneeveguilla Round 3 12/4/16 Currow v Knock/Brosna Round 4 20/4/16 Currow v Listowel Emmets Round 5 27/4/16 John Mitchels v Currow U6, U8, U10s: Will begin training on Saturday 19th March. Membership is now due and can be paid to any of the Currow Coiste Na nÓg officers.

East Kerry

East Kerry Senior League The Frank Doran Safeguard Security East Kerry Senior League continued last weekend with 3 games. In division 1A Legion came out on top when they hosted Currow, 3-8 to 1-5. Dr Crokes maintained their unbeaten record in division 1B with a win over neighbours Spa, 5-17 to 0-8. The division 1 final will be between the top team in division 1A meet the team who top division 1B. There was a round 2 back game fixed for Sunday in division 2. Fossa travelled to Farranfore and proved the stronger, taking the league points on a final score of Fossa 5-14 Firies 1-11. This

Cork (10 points) and Mayo on Sunday last when they edged out the visitors by two points in Ballybofey. Kerry in contrast, were disappointing in their opening two games when Dublin could have been more comprehensive winners than the six point margin would suggest and on their home patch in Killarney, they were turned over by Roscommon. The comprehensive nature of Sunday’s win away to Down will no doubt have taken some of the pressure off both players and management in the Kerry camp but all will be aware that the Kingdom will face a far different proposition on Sunday next. Injuries continue means that Scartaglen lead the league table with 4 points while Firies and Fossa are on equal points, with 2 each, making next Sundays games, Cordal V Fossa and Firies V Scartaglen important for all teams involved. Best Wishes Munster Finals Scór Sinsir The very best of luck in the Munster Final of Scór Sinsir next weekend to all clubs from Kerry and a special good wishes to the East Kerry Participants: Amhranaíocht Aonair - Eileen Cronin, Glenflesk; Aithriseoireacht Ray O’Sullivan - Spa; Leiriú - Fossa -with ‘Enemy of the State’; Rince Foirne & Rince Seit - Spa. Go Games 2016 Kerry County Board are hoping to run U8/U10 Go Games Blitzes in Tralee on Wednesday 30th and Thursday 31st of March. The U8 Go Games format will be 7 aside. Clubs may bring two teams on the day. The U10 Go Games format will be 9 aside. Clubs may bring two teams on the day. Closing date to enter is Friday 18th March. Please contact me by email in advance of closing date to confirm your club is taking part. Club Summer Camp 2016 Any East Kerry/Kenmare club hosting a club summer camp is asked contact East Kerry/ Kenmare GDA Vince Cooper by email with the date as soon as possible. This is to maintain a link with all host clubs running a camp during the summer months. East Kerry/ Kenmare GDA Vince Cooper would like to visit the club camps to provide support and assistance to club coaches during the summer. Congratulations Congratulations to St Brendans, Killarney team and mentors on winning the Corn Uí Mhuirí last Saturday. Fixtures 6th March 2016 East Kerry Senior League First named team has home venue All games at 12 noon Division 1A - Round 4

to plague the squad however with David Moran’s finger injury the latest setback along with knocks sustained by Killian Young, Jonathan Lyne and Johnny Buckley but on the plus side Colm Cooper, Peter Crowley and Kieran O’Leary are back in the frame as are Bryan Sheehan, who had a hectic winter on Club duty and Kieran Donaghy who took an unforced break over the winter period. It will be interesting to see will Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his management team stick with the same side that did duty in Newry. It would be generally acknowledged that Donegal are further down the line than Kerry in terms of preparation given Kerry’s later start due to a team holiday and no doubt we will know after Sunday’s game exactly where we stand in that regard. Donegal will hardly need any reminding that they were turned over twice in quick succession on the last two occasions the sides me and with some outstanding players on view on both teams, there is sure to be a bumper crowd in the new-look Tralee venue on Sunday. Kerry are away to Mayo in Round 5 in Castlebar. The referee for Sunday’s game is Eddie Kinsella of Laois.

ST BRENDAN’S WIN CORN UÍ MHUIRÍ FINAL

It was all too easy for St Brendan’s as they won their first Corn Uí Mhuirí since 2010 and their 21st overall when overpowering High School Clonmel at Mallow on Saturday last. The Tipp side, conquerors of Rochestown in the semi final, were looking for their first win in the final since the inaugural final in 1928 but they were no match for the Killarney side in a one sided final. Two goals within 30 seconds of each other soon after the start from Evan Cronin and Michael Casey set the “Sem” on their way and a third goal before the break from David Clifford, left the winners leading by an almost unassailable twelve points margin at the interval, 3-10 to 0-6. A string of points on the restart ensured that there would be no fightback from the Tipp boys and two further goals from Donnchadh O’Sullivan and William Courtney were the icing on the cake for the new champions. St Brendan’s now play St Benildus College of Dublin in the semi final on March 16. The Hogan Cup final is scheduled for April 2. interested in attending should contact Vince Cooper at 086 4084690.

Mariusz competed in the Munich Open Jiu Jitsu Championships during the weekend of February 20 and over two days took on some of the best jiu jitsu practitioners in Europe, winning the coveted top prize in both the gi and no gi categories. Mariusz has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with SBG Killarney for a number of years now and already holds many Irish national titles in the sport. He is coached by PJ Lucey, who is a purple belt in the sport under John Kavanagh of Straight Blast Gym Dublin. “Preparation was the key to his success and Mariusz would like to thank all his teammates who helped him prepare. A special mention also goes to Jimmy and Donal of Galvin Physiotherapy Clinic for making sure he was injury free, to Navé Yoga and also Paula Galezowska of Black Belt Nutrition for looking after his diet,” said a spokesman for SBG Killarney.
