Dancers To Bring €12.6m Boost To Killarney

THE welcome return of the An Comhdháil World Irish Dance Championships is estimated to be worth €12.6 million to the Killarney area. Over 5,000 dancers will take part in the event, which runs at Killarney Convention centre from March 19 to March 26. Welcoming its return, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Kate O’Leary said: “This spectacular event has a serious impact on the local economy. It is estimated that it is worth €12 million to the immediate area.” The event showcases Killarney all around the world through print and social media, added Kate. “Like a lot of great organizations it is run by volunteers. The dancers and their families love Killarney. It is very important that Killarney businesses support the event as they have sustained losses in the last few years,” she said. Competitors will arrive from America, Scotland, England, Europe and all over Ireland. Forty-three competitions take place over the eight-day championships and winners are

announced every day after each competition. The competitions are held in the INEC auditorium. The youngest dancer in the competition is nine years old and the oldest is twenty-five. The competitors will be accompanied by an entourage of organisers, teachers, adjudicators, musicians, families, friends, supporters and spectators. Last year an estimated 22,000 people visited Killarney for this event and this is the town’s third year hosting the Championships. Matthew Donohoe, chairperson of An Comhdháil, said the event has become “the annual family holiday for many”. “The economic benefits of these championships should be felt right across Killarney’s hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, shops and other businesses. Studies carried out during last year’s championships calculated that it was worth €12.6 million to the local economy,” he said. Patrick O’Donoghue, managing director of Killarney Convention Centre, said: “We wish all the competitors the very best of luck and we hope everyone enjoys their stay in

Volunteers needed for lakeshore clean-up VOLUNTEERS are required for a clean-up of the lakeshore tomorrow, Saturday, March 12, at 9am. The meeting point is the first entrance to Muckross House, the jarvey car park at the new entrance gates. “After a winter of storms and floods, there is a large amount of rubbish gathered on the shore,” said Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns. “This is a call to action from Killarney Tidy Towns and Lough Lein Anglers. All help greatly appreciated.”

Quiz Helps Continue Tim’s Work A KILLARNEY man who devoted much of his life to a great charity will be remembered at a table quiz, in his name, to raise funds to help continue his work. The late Tim Moore, a well-known accountant in Killarney who passed away, suddenly, in 2002, was actively involved in the Irish Pilgrimage Trust which brings children and young adults to Lourdes every year. The late Tim Moore. To honour his commitment, the annual Tim Moore Memorial Table Quiz is held in the town every year and this year’s event will take place in the Mangerton Suite of the Gleneagle Hotel on Tuesday, March 15 (8pm). Kieran Coffey, retired principal of Fossa National School, spearheads the Kerry pilgrimage to Lourdes every Easter and he has appealed to the public to support the very important fundraiser which helps offset some of the costs involved. Several children and young adults from Kerry, with physical and social needs, will travel on this year’s pilgrimage, starting on Easter Sunday, as part of a 1,000-strong group from Ireland. Cathal Walshe will be the quizmaster on the night and there will be some super spot prizes and raffle prizes given away. The admission for tables of four is €40 and the entry fee for primary and secondary school students is €20 per table.

Answer The Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) scheme enables homeowners to claim tax relief on repairs, renovations or improvement work carried out on their homes. Landlords can also avail of the scheme. It is paid in the form of a tax credit at 13.5% of qualifying expenditure, which can be set against your income tax over 2 years. You must be paying income tax to avail of the HRI. You must also be up to date with your Local Property Tax (LPT) obligations. Your contractor must be registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) in Ireland and be tax compliant. They also have to register the work on the HRI online administration system. If you use several contractors, such as a builder, a plumber and an electrician, you can combine the cost of the works to make up the minimum qualifying expenditure of €5,000 excluding VAT at 13.5%. Repair, renovation or improvement work subject to VAT at 13.5% all qualify for the HRI, including extensions and attic conversions; supply and fitting of kitchens, bathrooms and built-in wardrobes; fitting of windows; plumbing, tiling, rewiring and plastering. Work subject to VAT at 23% is not covered. Neither are items such as furniture, white goods or carpets. The work must be carried out and paid for by 31 December 2016. In general, the tax credit is paid over the 2 years following the year in which the work is carried out and paid for. If you are a PAYE taxpayer, the credit will be included in your annual Tax Credit Certificates. If you are a self-assessment taxpayer, it will be incorporated into your tax assessment. After work starts you should log in to HRI online to check that your contractor(s) have entered details of the work. You will not be able to claim the HRI tax credit if the details have not been entered onto HRI online. Once the work has been completed you can claim the HRI credit. You access the HRI online system through Revenue’s myAccount service or through the Revenue Online Service (ROS) if you are registered for ROS. There is detailed information for homeowners and landlords on revenue.ie. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

'I'm Sure All Parents Will Give A Huge Hug To Their Children, Especially Before They Put Them To Bed' FIVE hundred people attended a special Mass in memory of baby Karol Rozycki on Tuesday. The 11-month-old baby boy who died on Mother’s Day on Sunday will be laid to rest in Poland this weekend. The community showed its solidarity with Karol’s heartbroken mother Anna Rozycka and family as people of all ages turned out at the 4.30pm Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral. The little boy was pronounced dead at the Park Place apartment where he lived. His mother raised the alarm when she returned from work at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel at 6pm on Sunday evening. She called Gardaí and emergency services, who treated Karol at the scene. Tragically, he was pronounced dead a short time later. During the Mass, the family thanked Gardaí, the staff at Park Place Apartments and Aghadoe Heights Hotel where Anna works as a chef. A man in his 30s, found at the scene, was taken to University Hospital Kerry in Tralee for treatment. A post-mortem was carried out on the infant whose body was returned to his grieving family on Wednesday. Among the hundreds attending the Mass were members of the Polish and Irish communities and Ms Rozycka's colleagues from the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, Superintendent Flor Murphy and members of the Gardaí. Polish Chaplain Piotr Delimat, the chief celebrant of the bilingual Mass, said little Karol or "maly Karolek", had united the Polish and Irish communities. "He unites us and all our children; no matter where we're from, we all love our children,” said Fr Delimat. "I'm sure all parents will give a huge hug to their children, especially before they put them to bed.” Killarney parish administrator Fr Kieran O'Brien called on those gathered to pray for Anna and her family. "Anna is very grateful for all the support she has received, from her colleagues in the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, the gardaí, residents and staff at Park Place, and the wider community here in Killarney. To see so many of you gathered in our cathedral says many things to Anna,” he said. "What she asks now from us is our prayers for her family.” A close family friend, Damian Mucha, paid a special tribute to the gardaí and the owners of the apartment where the family had lived. "Karol was a lovely boy. In his short life, he gave us so much happiness, more than someone with a long life could have. May he rest in peace," he said.

Anna Rozycka and her son Karol.

Gardaí Appeal For Information On Mother’s Day Tragedy MEMBERS of the Garda Technical Bureau have examined the scene of the tragedy, which was sealed off on Sunday. Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster visited the apartment late that night. Superintendent Flor Murphy said Gardaí will work in conjunction with Polish authorities to establish an inquiry. Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222. Meanwhile a bank account has now been set up at the Ulster Bank in Killarney to help with the repatriation costs. The Ulster bank account number is 10855220, sort code 985886. Editor's View Cloud of grief descends as Killarney mourns baby Karol IN HIS 11 short months he brought as much happiness as though he had lived a lifetime. Those were the words of family friend Damian Mucha who addressed the congregation of mourners at the memorial Mass for baby Karol Rozycki on Tuesday. It is difficult to describe the cloud of grief that descended on the town as the community has struggled to come to terms

Supported by her mother Tereasa, she will fly to Poland with the body of her 11-month old son today, where he will be buried in Ms Rozycka's home city of Bielsko-Biala this weekend. The statement on Ms Rozycka's behalf thanked the staff and management at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel in Killarney where she works as a chef. It also thanked gardaí, the chaplain to the 5,000-strong Polish community in Kerry, Fr Piotr Delimat, and Killarney Parish Priest Fr Kieran O'Brien.

‘Paddy’s looking down from above on us’

Friends of the late Paddy Turner at the dedication of the bench to his memory on Wednesday.

CALLS by his friends for a memorial to the late Paddy Turner came to fruition on Wednesday at noon. A cheerful gathering descended at the top of High Street. Sweeping through the crowd were many delighted murmurs of “Paddy would have loved this!” Backed by numerous members of the Killarney Municipal District, Paddy’s pals, led by Enda Walshe and Joe Mulvihill, campaigned to have a bench in his memory erected at the top of the High Street Paddy loved so well. “Paddy’s looking down from above on us,” said Joe as he tried the bench for size. Tom Tobin of Killarney Medals and Trophies sponsored the plaque for the memorial. Councillor John Joe Culloty and Cllr Donal Grady raised the matter at a meeting of Killarney Municipal District last year. Cllr Culloty said the memorial would “mark the recent passing

of Mr Paddy Turner, a hugely popular and respected citizen of Killarney”. The council stated a bench could be provided and would be suitable for funding from the Councillor Specific Municipal District Fund. Paddy was hugely popular and his death in March last year, following a brave battle with illness, prompted an outpouring of tributes.

HIS warm smile and signature sunny greeting “Nice morning, not a bad morning” won him innumerable friends around the Killarney area. Fittingly, those words, called out whatever the weather, were inscribed on the plaque placed on a bench in memory of Paddy Turner who passed away last year. Like many people, I always found a few pleasantries from Paddy as he went about his daily trips down town would brighten up one’s day. The countless friends he made along High Street and throughout the town and beyond paid tribute to Paddy at

his funeral last year and there was a huge gathering as the bench was dedicated to his memory on Wednesday at midday. It goes without saying that Paddy looked after things at his end, as on the dot of noon, after a morning of incessant rain, the sun broke through the clouds, further enhancing the heart-warming dedication ceremony. Excellent Edel Hits All The Right Notes At Rotary Contest RESOUNDING rounds of applause rang out for talented Edel Crowley who took a bow when she was crowned overall winner of the prestigious Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition on Saturday night. The Franciscan Friary in Killarney hosted the 16th annual event, which followed competitions in the nearby Kerry Diocesan Youth Service Centre, Fairhill, on Friday and Saturday. The event, held in association with Killarney Advertiser, showcased some of Kerry’s brightest and best singers and instrumentalists. Edel, from Tralee, represented Rotary Ireland last year in the Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland Young Musician competition in the UK. Killarney Rotary president-elect Angela O’Connor described the event as a huge success and paid tribute to all involved. Angela, together with Rotary Ireland District Governor Declan Tyner presented the prizes. Killarney’s Hannah Sherry, on piano, won second prize while Catriona Fitzmaurice, Tralee, voice, was in third place. The runners-up were Caoimhe Doyle, Muckross, Killarney, on violin, and Charlotte O’Halloran, Tarbert, in the voice category. Orlaith O’Sullivan from Killorglin won the James Gleeson Memorial Trophy. James’s wife Grace and son Eoin presented the trophy in James’s memory. The competition, which had Tomas O Tuama and Donal O’Callaghan as adjudicators, has contributed hugely to raising the standards of classical music performance in the county over the years. Organisers Sean Treacy and Barry Murphy of Killarney Rotary Club established the contest in 2001. “It’s great to see that the competition is holding its numbers that every year with so many young performers taking part,” said Sean. “Killarney Rotary Club is already looking forward to next year’s event and is delighted to be keeping the bar raised in the music world. The Friary was a unique venue with its wonderful natural acoustics.”

Liebherr Retain All-Ireland Senior Inter-Firm Crown CONGRATULATIONS to Liebherr, Killarney, who retrained their All-Ireland Senior Inter-Firm crown in Tuam on Saturday last against 2015’s defeated finalists Medtronic on a scoreline of Medtronic (Galway) 0-7 Liebherr (Kerry) 0-10. Liebherr, who were playing against a strong breeze in the first half, were dealt a harsh blow when they were reduced to 14 men on 20 minutes and at that stage trailed four points to two. Liebherr upped their game and rallied late in the half to draw back level and go in at the break four points apiece. Liebherr started the second half on a mission and were three points up with 44 minutes played, Medtronic were not giving up though and with 10 minutes left to play their was only two points separating the sides. Liebherr tagged on another point and defended heroically during the closing few minutes as Medtronic tried in great numbers but ultimately in vain to get an equalising goal. “This was a superb team performance from the Liebherr team who were playing away from home against a team desperately trying to avenge last year’s defeat,” said a spokesman.

Healy-Raes Centre Stage In Dublin

All off to Dublin: Supporters of Michael and Danny Healy-Rae board the 7.36 train bound for Heuston Station in Dublin for the opening of Dail Eireann on Thursday. PICTURE: DON MacMONAGLE

AN IMPRESSIVE number of Healy-Rae supporters were out bright and early yesterday morning as they set off for Dublin to cheer on Michael and Danny Healy-Rae as they took their places the first siblings from the same constituency to take their place in the Dáil in the same election. Over 100 well-wishers made the trip to Leinster House with the Kilgarvan brothers. Meanwhile, Danny’s daughter Maura Healy-Rae, a 25-year-old English and History teacher, will be co-opted onto Kerry County Council next week to replace her father. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae, flanked by his brother Deputy Danny Healy-Rae and Danny’s son Cllr Johnny Healy-Rae, thanked all their supporters from the bonnet of a jeep outside Leinster House yesterday. Meanwhile, nearly 600,000 viewers watched the Healy-Rae brothers when they appeared in the Late Late Show last Friday night. Let’s paint the town green this St Patrick’s Day

THE Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle committee won a sought-after new award, being named Laochra Chiarraí, at the annual Oíche Chiarraí 2016, the flagship event in the yearly calendar of the Kerry Association in Dublin. The event saw Fexco founder and chairman Brian McCarthy selected as Kerry Person of the Year. The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle Committee has been selected to receive the new award which recognises exemplary leadership in community activity in the county. Over 250 people were in attendance including a number of past recipients of the Kerry Person of the Year award. Stephen Rae, a native of Boolteens, and the Group Editor of Independent News and Media, did a superb job in the role of MC for the evening. The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycling Committee received the inaugural Laochra Chiarraí award in recognition of their very successful annual event which raises much-needed funds for Kerry-based charities including a record €1.85 million in 2015. Tim O’Brien, current chairperson of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycling Committee, accepted the cup from Danny Tim O’Sullivan, the 2015 Kerry Person of the Year and a long-standing supporter of and participant in the cycle, who has generously donated the Laochra Chiarraí cup.

THE team behind St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne is are delighted with the response to the second annual event. The theme of the festival is Ireland: Past, Present a n d Future and festival chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly of MD O’Shea and Sons encourages everyone to get out early on the day of the parade and join in what will be a spectacle for the whole family. Committee member Helen Sheehan of The Killarney Grand Hotel added: “We have had a great response from the local business community both from a sponsorship level to local businesses getting involved with the festival.” The committee advises that the parade floats and vehicles have to arrive at Mission Road from the Port Road and Cathedral Place side. Traffic will not be allowed to travel down Mission Road towards the Cathedral. “The spectacle we have in store would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors and we would ask that they be supported wherever possible,” added Helen.

It’s Whip Crack Away As Calamity Jane Delights Killarney THE wagon trail led out the Muckross Road transporting theatregoers from Killarney into America’s Wild West last night as the curtain rose on Calamity Jane at the INEC. The opening night of the three-night run delighted the audience from start to finish and is a credit to cast and crew. Super-talented Michelle O’Callaghan brings colourful Calamity to life in all her loveable glory, striding about the stage with gusto and holding her listeners spellbound with her superb vocals. Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood and Michelle’s comic turn as she portrays the character’s loveably boastful side is hilarious and touching. Killarney Musical Society’s 31st production had the audience clapping along from the start and of course brought everyone to their feet in a well-deserved standing ovation as the curtain descended. Derek O’Leary dazzles in as Wild Bill Hickok in what is Derek’s 25th consecutive show with Killarney Musical Society. Star turns are also given by Lily MacMonagle as Susan, Fergal Cleary as Henry Miller, Padraig Creedon as Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, Siobháin Bustin as Katie Brown, and Jack Patrick Healy as Francis Fryer. Clionadh Ni Dheargain takes on the role of Adelaide Adams with aplomb while also enjoying the limelight are Paul O’Sullivan as Doc Pierce and Aidan Kiely as Rattlesnake The leads are wonderfully supported by the entire cast and crew. This year’s musical, which has Independent Irish Health Food Ltd as its main sponsor, is led by director Killian Collins, musical director John O’Brien and choreographer Sarah Griffin. A must-see, the whip-crack-away production concludes this evening, Friday, March 11. Tickets are available on the INEC website, box office and on Ticketmaster.

Help Kerry Volunteers In The Fight Against Cancer

At the coffee morning were organising committee Kathleen O'Shea (treasurer), Eugene O'Sullivan (chairman), Kathrina Breen (secretary); back,Eleanor O'Doherty, Timmy Moriarty and Kathleen Cronin.

AS ALWAYS there was a huge and generous-spirited turnout for the annual coffee morning organised by the hard-working Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society. Kathrina Breen of the branch hailed the event, which took place in the Killarney Towers Hotel last Friday, as a “brilliant success”. Indeed, Killarney is really showing support for the society as Kathrina and her colleagues in the society were yesterday presented with the proceeds of the “pink day” fundraiser organised by the bighearted team at Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty. “Everyone involved in the Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society has had friends and family who have been touched by cancer in one way or another so it really means a lot,” Kathrina told the Killarney Advertiser. Some 1,277 people in Kerry

were diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and this figure is increasing every year. This year Daffodil Day volunteers across Killarney and Kerry will be collecting to help provide free services for cancer patients including services where patients are brought to their chemotherapy treatments; the Cancer Nurseline, 1800 200 700 where people can get expert support and guidance; and where patients in the last days of their life are able to stay at home surrounded by the ones they love, cared for compassionately and with dignity by one of the Irish Cancer Society’s Night Nurses. The public can support Daffodil Day by buying a daffodil from one of the volunteers in your community; donating online at www.cancer.ie or donating at CallSave 1850 60 60 60 or texting Daff to 50300 to donate.

€30M For Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme A €30 MILLION investment in the Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme has been approved. refurbishment works on existing infrastructure. The Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme provides water to 9 water supply zones, all of which are currently on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List (RAL) arising from the absence of a robust treatment system incorporating a Cryptosporidium barrier or

because of elevated levels of Trihalomethanes (THMs), a problematic by-product of the disinfection process. The Kerry Central scheme serves over 62,000 people on a permanent basis and an estimated 1.2 million visitors annually. The new Water Treatment Plant will provide 51 million litres of treated

water per day to the communities of central Kerry including Tralee, Killarney, Castleisland, Castlemaine and an extensive rural area across the county. The delivery of this project will ensure that more than 62,000 people will be removed from the RAL and will provide a safe and secure water supply in relation to industry, agriculture and tourism.

Colm Cooper Launches Fifth Kerry County Clean-Up KERRY SHARPSHOOTER Colm Cooper helped unveil details of the fifth annual Kerry County Clean-Up Day which takes place on Saturday, April 2. The project is facilitated by KWD Recycling with the support of the Kerry County Council, Kerry County Board, An Taisce and the Department of Environment. Colm was guest of honour at the launch, at Ballygarry House Hotel, of the one-day event with many tidy town committees and volunteer groups in attendance, along with KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council representatives. “The aim as ever, is to pick up all the litter, on one day, from all our main roads around Kerry in an attempt to keep our environment pristine for locals and visitors alike to enjoy,” said Noel O’Reilly of KWD Recycling. “This in turn promotes better tourism by making a lasting impression to all who visit the county.” Last year 3200 volunteers collected over 60 tonnes of litter off Kerry roads. “As well as making a huge difference to the beauty and scenery of Kerry, it’s also a great way to get local communities and groups together for a good cause and it’s easy to get involved, please show your support and log onto www. countycleanup.com where you can register your group and order a free clean-up day pack which includes reflective vests, red-branded refuse sacks, event posters and information on how to organise your group. You can also follow progress or get information on the ‘Kerry County Clean Up’ Facebook page,” said Noel. So let’s show pride in our local community and county on April 2 by helping out on this one-day initiative to clean our roads.

Essential tips for heating efficiency THE Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) says your objective when it comes to home heating is to learn how to make your home comfortable with the minimum amount of heat, by using the heating systems and the controls that you have. Experiment with the following tips and mix and match to see what works for you. ✔Switch the heating system on later in the morning and off earlier in the evening. The best way to find the right balance for your house is to experiment a little, first of all try turning on the central heating 30 minutes before you get up and off 1 hour earlier in the evening. ✔Turn the heating in living areas

down to 20°C – this could save you 10% off your heating bill. The temperature in hallways and bedrooms should be cooler – ideally 15-18°C. ✔Use temperature cards (available from SEAI) in a number of rooms, to prevent overheating and familiarise yourself with what different temperatures feel like. ✔If you have a thermostat on your central-heating boiler, experiment to get the lowest setting (some systems may require a plumber). You can r e -

duce it in mild weather, but don't go below 60°C. Typically, the optimum setting is between 70°C and 80°C (i.e. adjust the dial between 'min' max' on gas boilers) — but it really pays to experiment. Make a note of the settings you try, and the results you obtain to control the heat output in response to the weather and indoor temperatures. ✔Use Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) to adjust heat output from radiators when in rooms in response to your heating needs. ✔Turn off your heating at night when you're in bed and likewise when you're not there, or if you're going to be away for a few days. ✔Open the curtains and blinds in rooms facing south during the day to let in the heat of the sun.

✔Use conservatories during sunny winter days to heat the house by opening the doors from them into the house while it's sunny, but by closing them when it's overcast and dark outside. ✔Effective use of windows provides sufficient ventilation without overcooling rooms. Don't leave external doors and windows open unnecessarily. ✔Use internal doors to maintain heating zones and distribution of heat throughout the main spaces. HEAT PUMPS EXPLAINED William Kirby, Cremur technical sales representative, offers key facts about heat pumps A HEAT pump collects stored solar energy and converts it into heating and hot water for your home.

There are four types of heat pump: 1) Air/air collects energy from outdoor air and converts it into hot air. This does not work at low temperatures and cannot produce hot water. You can regard it as a complement to other forms of heating. It is ideal for commercial applications such as offices and restaurants. 2) Air/water converts the energy in outdoor air into heating for a water-based heating system (radiators or underfloor heating). Some models still function when the outdoor temperature is as low as minus 20°C. Hot water can also be produced. This alternative provides a comprehensive heating system for

your home and is ideal for both domestic and commercial use. 3) Liquid/water (ground source) collects energy from the bedrock, ground or water. Functions otherwise like an air/water heat pump, but is more efficient at low temperatures. This alternative provides a comprehensive heating system for your home and is ideal for both commercial and domestic use. 4) Exhaust air recycles energy from the home's ventilation air and returns it to the heating system. An exhaust air heat pump utilises air already used in the home. It can help make savings, but cannot be the main supplier of heating and hot water. (Ideal for Domestic use)

Heat pumps use approximately one part electrical energy to extract 4 parts solar energy. All high-quality heat pumps are equipped with an electric heating element that provides extra safety. The heating element provides extra high temperatures to the hot water, to prevent the formation of legionella bacteria.

Lifespan and operation

The lifespan of a heat pump varies for different types and brands, but in general an air/water or liquid/water (Ground Source) heat pump from a good manufacturer should last between 20 and 30 years. A major advantage with a heat pump is that it requires minimal maintenance and attention. If it is installed correctly you can almost forget that you have one. It should work every day, all year, making your home warm and comfortable. Call to Cremur to view Munster’s newest and most up to date showroom. Green Schools are a class act LEARNING about sustainable energy all starts in the classroom and schools in Kerry are hotbeds of expert knowledge when it comes to home energy and renewables. An Taisce Green Schools project has been appointed to deliver SEAI's Schools workshops throughout Ireland for the 2015/16 school year. These workshops are directly linked to the curricula and are great way to inform and involve pupils and teachers in ways to save energy, and will help schools to achieve their Green Flag. Workshops are delivered free of charge and involve inquiry based learning through experiments, videos, games and talks.

There are specific workshops for Junior

Primary; Senior Primary; first, second and transition year secondary classes. Also available are CPD Energy workshops for Primary School Teachers that qualify for ‘Croke Park hours’ (subject to school management approval in accordance with DES Circulars) and are particularly relevant for schools applying for their Green Flag for Energy. Workshops are open to all schools and are allocated on a first come first served basis. Early booking is advisable. To find out more information and to book a workshop email seai@eeu.antaisce.org or phone 01-4002225.

How to minimise unnecessary heating of hot water The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland has tips on efficient use of sinks, showers, baths and other appliances •Always consider the amount of hot water needed and when it is required and determine the most efficient use of your central heating systems and immersion heaters. •Evaluate your routine of hot-water demand – when you need hot water and how much you need – and adjust the timer settings. If you use an immersion heater or central heating to heat your water, adjust the length of time

they are used per day, depending on your needs. •If your hot water is being heated by the central-heating boiler and your hot-water cylinder has a thermostat, you should set the thermostat to 65 °C. •Make sure your immersion thermostat is working correctly. (Have an electrician check this for you.) •Prioritise use of the shower over a bath. A typical shower uses only 20% of the energy of a full bath •Never leave a hot tap running unnecessarily.

TIME FOR A TIPPLE In association with CarryOut Off Licence, Tralee and Muckross Rds., Killarney

Special occasions call for that something extra EXPENSIVE high-end wines aren’t for everyone. And certainly not for every day. It is difficult to justify spending in excess of €20 on a single bottle on an average Friday or Saturday night. Good knows I certainly don’t. Special occasions are different – at Christmas or when celebrating an event – a birth, a birthday, a wedding, an achievement, I like to go a little bit extra and pay for something that you will remember.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

The Brehon’s head chef Chad Byrne shares a recipe for a lunchtime staple

With that in mind we, at CarryOut, have been trying to reduce the prices of reasonably pricey wines for a limited time. At Christmas we had the Masi Valpolicella and the Faustino Gran Reserva for €15 each and they were a great success. Now, for St Patrick’s Day and Easter we will have the Presidents Selection from Wolf Blass at the same price. These are genuinely €23 wines and even at that price are good value. Coming in three

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

JOHN 8:1-11: Compassion for human frailty combined with a gentle challenge to a better life marked the response of Jesus. From whom have you experienced a compassionate challenge? What was that like for you? To whom have you given such a challenge? The Pharisees and scribes self-righteously condemned the woman until Jesus brought them in touch with their own sinfulness. This was a conversion moment for them and they turned away from their quest for the death of the woman. Have there been times when your awareness of your own fragility and sinfulness has helped you to be less judgemental of others? “What do you say?” can be an embarrassing question. Jesus had the courage to voice an opinion, even though it was against the party line of the day. When you have seen that courage shown – by yourself, or by another? What was the result? John Byrne OSA

OPEN THE DOORS

TODAY marks the third anniversary of the election of Pope Francis. His papacy has been marked by a focus on openness, forgiveness, and mercy – summed up, perhaps, in his oft quoted remark: “Who am I to judge?” So prevalent is his focus on God’s mercy that Pope Francis has declared this a Jubilee Year of Mercy – a special year to receive blessing from God and remission of sins. Some of us will make a pilgrimage during this year to one of the many holy doors in our cathedrals and churches. Pope Francis has called on Catholics around the world to use the occasion to open wide the doors of their hearts to forgive others and not to exclude them. “When we go through that door, it is good to remember that we must also open wide the doors of our heart,” he said, suggesting that before passing through the Holy Door, people should pray: “Lord, help me to open the doors of my heart! “The holy year won’t be very effective if the doors of our heart do not let Christ enter, who pushes us to go towards others, to bring him and his love. Therefore, as the holy door remains open because it is the sign of the welcoming that God himself reserves for us, so also our doors – those of the heart – must always be open to not exclude anyone. Not even those that bother me. No one!” It is very much in the tradition of today’s Gospel, where we meet a Jesus who is merciful to sinners, and who challenges us all to look at our own attitudes and our tendency to judge others. AN ITN roving report from 1959 opens with grainy footage of Ladies View and the caption “Killarney, USA?” Reporter Tom St. John Barry asks, “Is the Star-Spangled Banner now the national anthem of Killarney?” The reason for his question lies in Killarney House, which Florida realtor J. Stuart Robertson bought in 1956 and then sold to a U.S. syndicate in 1958. A member of that syndicate was John McShain, who became known as “the man who built Washington” after his firm built the Jefferson Memorial, extended the Pentagon, and refurbished the White House. A mutual interest in horse racing inspired McShain’s friendship with former Irish president Sean T. O Ceallaigh, who reputedly advised the building magnate to buy Killarney House to prevent it from being turned into a theme park. McShain eventually bought out the other members of the syndicate, reassuring the people of Killarney in a January 1961 issue of The Kerryman that he would “always honour this commitment of doing the best for Killarney.” That commitment involved using workers from the Kenmare Estate to refurbish the 18th-century house and attend to the exquisite lawns, gardens, and greenhouses. Killarney House caretaker Harry O’Donoghue, who worked for the McShains, recalls that the O’Connor sisters of New Street placed fresh flowers in the rooms daily, while chef Jimmy Sugrue and gardener William Keogh picked vegetables for the kitchen all-year round. One of Harry’s duties was to look after the many American guests who visited. They played golf, took trips by pony and trap, and explored Ireland by chauffeur-driven car. The McShains took up permanent residence in 1987, after John McShain became too frail to travel home to the United States in winter. From then until his death in 1989 and the death of his wife, Mary, in 1998, a permanent nursing team was employed to take care of the elderly couple. Some Killarney people may have looked forward to “dollars flying everywhere,” but the US connection to Killarney House ended with Mrs McShain’s death, and ownership of the property reverted to the Irish state in 1998. The Office of Public Works acquired most of the house’s contents, including important furniture and art dating back to the Earls of Kenmare. Now the property of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, which has responsibility for Killarney National Park, some of these will be on display when the house opens to the public. HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

GREATEST INVENTIONS OF THE LAST CENTURY ONE of the greatest inventions of the last century was the cable tie. Cable ties were first dreamt up by Thomas & Betts, an electrical company, in 1958 under the brand name Ty-Rap. Initially they were designed for airplane wire harnesses. The Ty-Rap inventor, Maurus C. Logan, worked for Thomas & Betts. The idea of the cable tie came to Logan while touring a Boeing aircraft manufacturing facility in 1956. Aircraft wiring was a cumbersome and detailed undertaking, involving thousands of feet of wire organized on sheets of 50-foot long plywood and held in place with braided nylon cord. Each knot had to be pulled tight by wrapping the cord around one's finger which sometimes cut the operator's fingers. Logan was convinced there had to be an easier, more forgiving, way to accomplish this critical task. For the next couple of years, Logan experimented with various tools and materials. On June 24, 1958, a patent for the Ty-Rap cable tie was submitted. Today the cable tie is used in nearly every manufactured item from our cars to our washing machines and even used to hold up our recent election posters. How unfortunate then that the littering of cable ties around our town and county following the removal of the general election posters turns this innovation into an eyesore. These helpful and trusty cable ties have been discarded on the ground. Cable ties by their very nature are a discreet and hugely helpful product and should be treated with respect that it deserves and disposed of in an environmentally fashion to maybe return again in similarly helpful fashion in the future.

PASSPORT CLAIMS Ireland as well as Canada, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, South Korea & Switzerland qualifies for visafree access to 172 countries just 5 less than Germany, the world’s most accepted passport. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs has reported a record year for Irish passport claims in 2015, which saw almost 70,000 applications filed at its London office. On 18 February, as David Cameron started talks in Brussels aiming to gain concessions on Britain’s membership of the European Union, the Irish passport service reported a spike in demand. “We are currently experiencing a high demand on our services,” a tweet from its official account read. “If you have any queries please DM us and we will try our best to answer them.” I assume by the term ‘DM’ they are referring to ‘Direct Message’ and not ‘Designated Marksman.’ Why can’t they keep it simple? Figures suggest that the increase may be linked to the looming referendum in June, as the number of British-born people applying for Irish passports has risen sharply. Only Irish citizens qualify for the documents but the country’s nationality law means that people can claim through marriage, naturalisation and descent. Anyone with an Irish parent automatically qualifies, even if they were born abroad, and anyone with a grandparent born on the island of Ireland can also apply. The number of adults born in England, Scotland or Wales applying for their first Irish passport on the basis of having an Irish-born grandparent increased by more a third between 2014 and 2015. Applications based on Irish parentage rose by 11 per cent in the same period, from 3,376 to 3,736. Obviously people are disturbed at the possibility of Britain leaving the EU. Despite our recent economic troubles and post Celtic Tiger decline, pro-EU feeling has remained strong in Ireland and the country is not expected to make any moves to copy its neighbour if Britain votes to leave the EU on 23 June. Apparently we are happy to keep the recovery going. Out of 669,806 Irish passports issued in the record year, up 6 per cent from 2014, and 68,416 applications were received through the London Passport Office.

Investors to revitalise Killarney property A LEADING New York developer with Kerry links is a director in an investment company which has snapped up a Killarney property, according to a report by Breda Joy in Kerry’s Eye. Construction magnate Maurice Regan is a key fundraiser for Kerry GAA. He is closely involved in the Irish-registered company that now owns almost half of the Reeks Gateway development opposite Lidl on the Tralee Road, according to the report. It is understood this deal was recently brokered between the company and Killarney firm Sunday’s Well Properties with NAMA involved as a third party. The report adds that Maurice Regan’s company had bought “close to half” of the Reeks development.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD MIGRATION CRISIS In effort to solve what the United Nations refugee agency has described as a “largely self-induced humanitarian disaster,” Europe is negotiating with Turkey to stem the tide of refugees reaching Greece and the Greek Islands. The UNHCR said there were 30,000 refugees who needed accommodation in Greece, about 10,000 of them at the border with Macedonia. The European Commission is expected to propose €700m over the next three years for humanitarian aid, mainly for Greece, where most refugees have been landing. German Chancellor Angela Merkel says Europe cannot allow Greece to fall into “chaos”, but she is facing opposition from Austria and Balkan countries, who have closed their borders, in effect ringfencing Greece, and creating a bottleneck of refugees heading northwards. The tide of refugees coming through Turkey is the problem. For years now, Turkey has been masking huge efforts but very little progress on joining the EU. Not least of the problems is the long-standing dispute over Cyprus and Turkey’s woeful record on human rights. Brussels made it hard going for the Turkish negotiators. It seemed as if Brussels held all the aces. Now, thanks to the migration crisis, the tables have turned dramatically, and it is Ankara, not Brussels, that finds itself holding all the aces, a drastic change in circumstance the Turks are determined to exploit for their own advantage. As an opener, Brussels had offered Turkey €3 billion and visa-free travel to clamp down on the number of refugees making their way into Europe through its borders. However, the negotiations have developed into blatant extortion. Now, in return for agreeing to the repatriation of migrants being shipped to Greece by Turkish peoplesmuggling gangs – the so-called “one in, one out” deal – Turkey is demanding an extra three billion euro added to the three billion euro the EU has already pledged. In addition, Ankara wants full-scale visa liberalisation for Turkish citizens visiting the EU by June; an acceleration of Turkey’s application for EU membership and a pledge to resettle in Europe many of the Syrian refugees Turkey agrees to take in. A prominent German politician warned EU leaders may have robbed Peter to pay Paul, shutting off one influx but opening up the continent to 80 million Turkish citizens. Johannes Singhammer, vice-president of the Bundestag said there are “serious considerations” about the prospective visa-free regime, because it would open “a gateway for further immigration and a flow of refugees to Germany.” He said that German consulates in Turkey are already issuing a staggering 200,000 visas a year for free travel in the Schengen zone and that number is now set to explode when the agreement comes into force. Mr Singhammer said migrants from war-torn Syria or Iraq could add to the influx, but also migrants from Turkey itself, saying the domestic conflict with the Kurds “has a vast potential to create new reasons [for those persecuted] to flee.” German chancellor Angela Merkel has come under fire for her so-called open door policy to refugees and has insisted the answer to the migrant crisis is not to simply close European borders.

Fianna Fáil's Sean O Fearghail becomes first Ceann Comhairle to be elected by secret ballot FIANNA FÁIL TD Sean O Fearghail has been elected to become the new Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil. He is the first Ceann Comhairle to be elected by secret ballot. The Kildare South TD was successful in overcoming the challenge of fellow TDs Andrew Doyle, Wicklow; Bernard J Durkan, Kildare North; Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, Cavan-Monaghan and Maureen O'Sullivan, Dublin Central. He was elected on the fourth count and secured 74 votes in total, and finished 16 votes ahead of Fine Gael's Andrew Doyle. The Fianna Fail party whip in the last Dáil, Mr Ó Fearghaíl is a popular politician. Mr Ó Fearghaíl's election will mean he will be automatically re-elected as TD to the 33rd Dáil. South African kidnapper of baby Zephany guilty A SOUTH AFRICAN woman has been found guilty of kidnapping a three-day-old baby in 1997. Police accused her of fraudulently claiming to be the girl's biological mother since snatching her from a hospital in Cape Town. The 51-year-old woman was arrested last year after suspicions were raised when there was a similar-looking girl at the child's school. DNA tests then proved that the two girls were sisters, police said. The kidnapped girl's biological parents, Celeste and Morne Nurse, called her Zephany, but the name she grew up with has not been revealed to protect her identity. The convicted woman, who has been denied bail while she awaits sentencing, has also not been named for similar reasons. Zephany had been living with the accused, near the Nurse family's home in the Cape Flats, a mainly working class neighbourhood in Cape Town, when she was identified last year. The discovery came after one of the Nurse family's other daughters started going to a local secondary school and noticed a similarity with an older girl.

CALL FOR RE-EXAMINATION OF NEW ROAD/PORT ROAD TRAFFIC SYSTEM THERE has been a request for a re-examination of the one-way system at school times on New Road/Port Road. Raising the matter at the meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Cronin urged the council to request the roads department along with the Gardaí to take stock of the situation. “I am informed that some traffic exiting from St Mary’s Terrace and other entrances are ignoring the one way system and driving against school traffic, sometimes on the footpath, to the Port Road junction,” said Cllr Cronin. “This is extremely dangerous to motorists obeying the traffic plan and to pupils exiting schools.” Kerry County Council has been monitoring the traffic situation at New Road during school times. There is a problem with cars ignoring the one-way system. Kerry County Council will discuss this matter with An Garda Síochána and request them to police the area to improve compliance.

Field Of Dreams For Young Players

ON A sun-splashed Saturday morning last, up and coming GAA stars of the future lined out at the Dr Crokes GAA grounds in Killarney. The underage players began their training in both hurling and football with a host of new faces on the pitch. “It was great to see boys and girls beginning their experience with the Crokes which starts with building friendships early on,” said a spokesperson for the club. “Our ‘older’ players from the under8s and under-10s saw many familiar faces of friends from previous years.” Throughout the upcoming weeks and months the club’s dedicated coaches will develop these players’ skill level in an enjoyable environment. The academy continues this Saturday with hurling from 10am until 10.45am and football from 10.45am to 12pm.

CAR SALES UP BY 37% IN FEBRUARY

THE number of new cars licensed in February was over a third higher than February 2015. According to figures from the CSO, 21,173 new cars were licensed in February, a 37% increase on February 2015. The number of cars licensed in the first two months of 2016 was up 36% on the same period last year. 48,279 new private cars were licensed in January and February. Toyota was the most popular model for new private cars last month, at 2,378. In second place was Hyundai, 2,216,

54

Killarney Advertiser 11.03.16

followed by Ford, 2,185, Volkswagen, 2,113, and Nissan 2,103. These top five popular makes represented 51.9% of all new private cars licensed. Almost 70% of new private cars licensed in the first two months of 2016 were diesel. 96.2% of new private cars licensed in January and February this year were in the A/B CO2 emissions bands. The number of new goods vehicles also grew by a huge 49% in February yearon-year.

Nissan Qashqai: 0-2.3 million in 10 years THE Nissan Qashqai has become the highest-volume model ever built by the Japanese firm in Europe, after production at the Sunderland factory in the UK reached 2,368,704 units. This breaks the previous ‘most-built’ European Nissan, the Micra – and it’s achieved this in just 10 years, almost half the time taken by the once-popular Nissan supermini. Indeed, no UK-built car in history has ever gone from 0-2.3 million units so quickly. The total continues to spiral too: because Nissan builds a staggering 1,200 Qashqai a day (with production around the clock since 2010), it had already reached nearly 2.4 million units by the end of February. The efforts of Nissan Sunderland will be formally celebrated later in 2016 when the firm marks 30 years of the facility: after starting out building the Bluebird, today it makes the Qashqai, Juke, Note and LEAF.

Peugeot, Citroen adopt new testing procedures

Contact:

JOHN FLEMING Crash Repair Service Upper Lissivigeen, Killarney, Co. Kerry

THE French Peugeot-Citroen automotive group PSA is questioning the accuracy of the fuel consumption and emissions testing approved by government authorities publishing official figures for new cars. Fired up by the recent negative publicity around claimed consumption and emissions figures during Volkswagen’s ‘Dieselgate’ crisis in late 2015, PSA says it made the decision to adopt a new approach to determining and publishing consumption data that would give a more accurate picture to customers. This new approach is at odds with the entrenched NEDC (New European Drive Cycle) testing procedure that is the basis for our own ADR-approved test. PSA has published figures for three of its models using the new protocol, which is claimed to closely reflect real-world figures obtained in recent independent real-world surveys. Testing involved driving on public roads near Paris, comprising 25.5km urban, 39.7km extra urban and 31.1km motorway with “real-life” passenger and luggage loads, road gradients and air-conditioning systems in operation. The Clean Vehicles Director at Transport & Environment, Greg Archer, added: “The test developed with PSA Peugeot Citroën is reproducible and representative. It confirms the fuel consumption of a tested model by a typical driver in real-world driving conditions. This test proves

Volkswagen wants to revolutionise the electric car market and be quicker to adopt new technologies, like Tesla. An electric car with the potential to take eco motoring mainstream will spearhead Volkswagen’s green car revolution as the company bids to turn around its image in the wake of Dieselgate. VW Group CEO Matthias Muller provided more detail on the electric offensive at an event on the eve of this year’s Geneva Motor Show. There will be more digitalisation as VW seeks to create the perfect connected car and a concerted push towards autonomous driving, but it was the firm’s plans for an affordable, groundbreaking EV that sparked most interest. Said Muller: “(Cars with) all-electric ranges of over 500km are feasible by the end of the

decade. Charging will only take as long as a coffee break. And in the long term an electric car will cost less than a car with an internal combustion engine”. The VW Group chairman also announced the formation of three new “Future Centres” in Europe, Asia and California, realigning the group “for the digital era”. Explaining the new strategy, Muller said: “We need to start using the major tech trends to our benefit. We need to act and think quickly like Google, Apple and Tesla."

The Group will increase the interaction between its technology and design sectors with the three new Future Centres, located in Potsdam, California and China. VW’s best brains will work on the car of the future from these new centres. The overall aim is to improve the design of infotainment and cabin interfaces, and make the overall customer experience best-inclass. And the VW Group board has also just signed off a concerted push into autonomous driving, with the intention of beating rivals to the market with the first truly autonomous cars. Recently appointed chief digital officer Johann Jungwirth said: “By 2025 it will be expected to be moved from A to B in a self driving autonomous vehicle."

that the on-road tests are reliable and can be used to measure real CO2 emissions. This should become the benchmark for all car makers advertising their vehicles’ fuel efficiency.” At this stage, the results published by PSA only quote fuel consumption, but they indicate a strong correlation with the customer survey figures. The figures are for the Peugeot 308 1.6 BlueHDi 120, the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 1.6 BlueHDi 120 and the DS3 1.6 BlueHDi 120. In accordance with the new protocol, the consumption figure for the Peugeot 308 was 5.0L/100km, comparing closely with the customer survey figure of 5.0-5.1L/100km, while figures for the other two vehicles were similarly close. PSA says it will release figures for 30 Peugeot, Citroen and core DS models before mid-2016.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

‘Homelessness is all around us and we need to do something about it’ AFTER a pretty tough and challenging winter and after my first mini-fundraiser through mycharity.ie I have decided it is time for me to stop feeling sorry for myself (as I believe, we all do from time to time?!) and get active again. In a car park recently, somebody knocked at my car window. Instantly I felt guilty as I had sat in the car for way too long without bothering getting a parking ticket, way too distracted, my own life's issues a big priority that particular morning. As it turned out the man outside my car could barely talk and it was only after his third attempt of speaking to me I understood what he was saying, "I am homeless!" His hands felt so cold and were shaking, he had tears in his eyes and all I ended up doing, was holding his hands for a while and giving him whatever change I had in my wallet. Why did I put the €10 note back into my wallet, why

Katrin Pietzonka.

didn't I give him the last €50 note I had on me? Why did he only end up getting enough change that would buy him a warm cup of coffee on this miserable morning? To add to my feelings of guilt and being ashamed, only minutes before I had visited the local and beautiful church, lit a candle and said a few prayers... Sound a little bit familiar? Homelessness is all around us and it's our choice whether we

consciously become aware of it and start doing something about it. It is our problem, our responsibility. If you feel you would like to support my modest attempt to raise funds all I am asking here is can you spare the price of a warm and comforting cup of coffee, can you even spare a little more and support Focus Ireland and all the wonderful work they are doing and help me raise funds while I'm back on the Camino walking from the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela to Finisterra from March 12-20. See my fundraiser on mycharity.ie And so I promise, every single person who will consider a small donation here, I will include you in my prayers while in the Cathedral. Please let me know how I can help you by including you in my prayers. Katrin Pietzonka, Killarney

Footpath safety in Kilcummin AT THE February 2016 meeting of Killarney Municipal District, I asked whether all is now in readiness for the commencement of the footpath from Páirc Chuimín to Kilcummin Village as it is vital for the safety of all pedes- Councillor Michael trians and in particular Gleeson. for the well-being of school going children. Kerry County Council replied that consultations and discussions have taken place with two adjacent landowners at this location. The cost of the land acquisition and the accommodation works required has been prepared. The cost of the project is well in excess of the available planning levy. Another source of funding for the work is being investigated. I welcomed the reply. The footpath on completion will be of vital importance for all travelling on foot to and from the village. It will be of especial importance for the safety of schoolchildren. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Kerry Independent Alliance, Clasheen, Killarney

In loving memory of a dear mother Norann O’Sullivan, late of Cockhill Kilcummin Killarney who died on the 14th March 2012. The moment that you died Our hearts were torn in two One side filled with heartache The other died with you. We often lie awake at night When the world is fast asleep And take a walk down memory lane With tears upon our cheeks. prayer to ST. joseph O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. A.P.

And through these things a wood-way dim, And waters dim, and slow sheep seen On uphill paths that wind away Through summer sounds and harvest green. This is a song a robin sang This morning on a broken tree, It was about the little fields That call across the world to me. Francis Ledwidge.

The competition will be a “singles stableford”, and time sheet will be from 7.45am to 1.00pm and entry will be via the usual Club on-line system. The competition will not be a “golfer of the year” qualifier. Liam also wishes to advise all Members that a joint prize presentation arrangement has been agreed with the Ladies Club, and that Mary O’Rourke Lady Captain and himself will conduct the first such prize giving evening on Friday the 1st of April, and again on the 29th of April and subsequently on the last Friday of each month thereafter, the commencement time has been set for 6.00pm for the 1st of April. Cormac Flannery Club Secretary Manager, held his second “Club information evening” on Friday last, the 4th of March, the objective of such evenings is to keep all Club Members fully upto-date with what is currently happening within our Club, and what is also in the pipeline etc. It is envisaged that these “information evenings” would become monthly events with the next one now scheduled to take place on the last Friday of each Month but as the last Friday of March will be Good Friday, it has been deferred to the 1st of April, and these question and answer sessions will coincide with the presentation of prizes for all competitions recently played, for both of the Ladies and Men’s Clubs as outlined above. The meeting was poorly attended with a turnout of only 22 Club Members attending, but those who did attend played a very meaningful role in the ensuing Question and Answer session, and which was most constructive, and all those who attended were very impressed with that type of forum, it being both informal and informative. Cormac emphasised that the principal

item for discussion was in relation to the finalising of the proposed layout of the 9 holes which our “Lacabane” course will eventually become, he outlined that there were three options currently under review, but should some member have an alternative layout to propose, then such would also be offered for consideration, the three layouts were currently available for viewing in the Clubhouse. It is envisaged that the layout that will be decided on via a member’s most popular choice, and a “ballot” paper for same will be available from the Club reception next week, commencing the 7th of March, and it is expected that the choice will become known on the 31st of March when the “votes” will be counted, so if Member’s wish to have a say on the layout, then this will be their chance to voice their opinion. Cormac went on to advise the meeting that “Killeen” course will re-open on the 17th of March, and that a very substantial amount of re-construction work has taken place on the course, in particular on the 1st where remedial works have been undertaken to repair the green, and to further protect the fairway in the event of further storms occurring which will once again encroach on our course. The 4th green and other areas on Killeen, and the 16th green on Mahony’s Point have also undergone substantial remedial works. Many topics were discussed and frank and forthright opinions were offered, and as such it could be best described as being, that a very healthy debate ensued.

Muckross Rowing Club

SYMPATHY The club extends its deepest sympathies to Paul Griffin, his mother Mary, siblings Maureen and Danny, wife Laura and all members of the Griffin family on the death of Donie Griffin. Our thoughts and prayers remain with Paul and his family at this time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. MUCKROSS HOR Once again, the weather forecast was to be the undoing of the club’s annual Head Of the River time trial event which had been rescheduled for Saturday last 5th March following the cancellation of the original fixture in December due to Storm Desmond. While the early hours of Saturday morning last appeared to defy the forecast conditions, an increasing northerly wind throughout the day was still likely to have presented too great a safety risk over the exposed course at the National Rowing Centre. The weather of the coming weekend appears more favourable and following the good weather of two weeks ago, it really seems our luck was simply not in this year. Both the original December date and the rescheduled event attracted significant interest with over 370 crews from over 20 rowing clubs entered for both fixtures. We are very grateful for the all the support received from members both past and present, all our supporters and parents of junior members who helped to fill a very busy rota of jobs ahead of the event. As the time trial season for 2015/16 draws to a close at the end of this month, it is back to the drawing board to plan for our 2016 Head event set for 3rd December. EVENTS The rescheduled St. Michael’s HOR due to take place this weekend has also been cancelled due to high water levels in the river Shannon. The club’s next event is the Galway Head Of the River on Saturday next 19th March. The challenging 5km time trial event is always a favourite on the calendar, with competition for all grades on the 5km Corrib course. The racing season gets underway on the first weekend of April with Dublin’s big two of Neptune and Commerical Rowing Clubs both staging their traditional regattas. Skibbereen Regatta is set for the National Rowing Centre on Saturday 9th April. The Limerick Regatta will take place on Saturday 23rd April at O’Briensbridge followed by the Schools Regatta at the same venue on Sunday 24th April.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Kerry defeat Donegal to collect two valuable AFL points KERRY gained two very valuable Allianz Football League points when defeating Donegal after what was at times a rather fractious encounter before an attendance of 7,056 at the newly revamped Austin Stack Park on Sunday last. Having got the advantage of playing with the strong wind in the first half, it was a game that Kerry dominated for long periods and the five points winning margin reflected their superiority. Kerry's half time lead of seven points to three looked precarious enough having to play against the elements in the second half and after Donegal had levelled the game on seven points apiece within as many minutes of the restart the writing did seem to be on the wall for Kerry. However, the home side knuckled down to the task and held Donegal to two scores for the remaining remainder of the game, a period Kerry dominated. Peter Crowley's wonderful goal gave the home-side breathing space and man of the match Donnchadh Walsh seemed to be everywhere, but the concession of a rather soft goal to Michael Murphy left Kerry supporters on tender hooks once more. What must have pleased Kerry management no end however was the way Kerry

closed out the game thereafter and added on two insurance scores, the second a trademark point from Colm Cooper, to secure their second victory on the trot. The victory, as Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice put it, allows Kerry to look up rather than down and aim for a semi-final spot, a target that is very achievable.

Kerry Head to Castlebar for Round 5 of the AFL

Following that heart-warming victory over Donegal on Sunday last, Kerry senior footballers head to Castlebar on Sunday next to take on Mayo where two more valuable League points are at stake. Kerry have not fared well against the Connaught county in the League in recent years, 2011 being the last time they achieved a victory and one has to go all the way back to 2005 for the last victory on Mayo soil. Mayo lost their opening game to Cork by nine points and then went down to two-point defeats to both Dublin and Donegal before coming good late on to defeat Monaghan last weekend. The likes of Killian Young, Jonathan Lyne and Tommy Walsh are still nursing knocks and may not be available for selection and of course Alan Fitzgerald is ruled out

East Kerry

East Kerry Senior League East Kerry Senior League continued last weekend with 6 games. In Division 1A, Rathmore hosted neighbours Gneeveguilla, on Saturday evening and after an entertaining game it was Rathmore who took the league points on a final scoreline of Rathmore 2-7 Gneeveguilla 0-9. On Sunday Glenflesk travelled to Currow and led for much of the game. Currow, to their credit never gave up and fought back in the last quarter leaving the sides on level scores at the final whistle: Glenflesk 2-11 Currow 3-08. Legion travelled to Rathbeg on Sunday morning and recorded a convincing win, to secure the league points. Final score Legion 6-16 Rathmore 1-9. In division 1B there were two games played last Sunday, and both were close affairs. Kilcummin travelled to Kenmare and despite wet and heavy underfoot conditions, the game provided a good hours entertainment and some very good scores throughout. Kenmare were the livelier in the first half and lead by 2-6 to 0-6 at half time.

due to suspension following his dismissal last Sunday for a retaliatory strike. The victory over Donegal is bound to have a positive effect on the Kerry players and has relieved the pressure somewhat following the disappointing losses to Dublin, and Roscommon in particular. However, Sunday’s encounter will be no easy task against a side fighting for survival. The news that Mikey Geaney has recommenced training will no doubt be welcomed by the Kerry management who also await the return of Mikey’s brother Paul, Anthony Maher and James O’Donoghue.

such as the long playing season and the All Ireland Club activity of Templenoe and St Marys have also been a hindrance, as has the unavailability of pitches due to the atrocious weather conditions. The Kerry team picked for duty contains just four of the side defeated by Cork in last year’s semi final game – Brian Ó Beagaloich, Cathal Ó Lúing, Micheál Burns and Jack Savage. Two more, Greg Horan and Eanna Ó Conchúir were introduced as subs in that game. Nine of the side won All Ireland Minor medals in either 2014 or 2015 are included. The team is captained by Jack Savage of Kerins O’Rahillys.

Munster Scór Finals

Kilcummin dominated the second half and, the visitors ran out winners by a single point. Final score: Kilcummin 1-14 Kenmare 2-10. The second game in the division saw Spa host Listry and in a closely contested game the visitors led by a point at the break and the sides finished level when the full time whistle sounded. Final score Spa 1-12 Listry 2-9. In division 2, an understrength Cordal faced off against Fossa in the final round of division 2 games last Sunday. The visitors proved convincing winners. Final score Fossa 2-19 Cordal 0-04. This means that Fossa and Scartaglen head the league table, on equal league points followed with two points less by Fires, who have a back game versus Scartaglen yet to play. Kerry open their Munster Under 21 Championship campaign on this Wednesday evening when the Kingdom take on Tipperary (7.30pm) in Austin Stack Park in the first game under the new floodlights at the newly revamped venue. Seniors The seniors had a very comfortable win over Cordal on Sunday morning in the East Kerry Superleague, they await a final fixture in this competition but non has been made as of yet. Minors Our Minors had a good win over St Michaels/Foilmore on Saturday evening in Fossa in their first game of the County League. While the visitors built up an early 3 point lead, Fossa fought their way back into this game with a brace of goals from Lee Lenihan. Cian O’ Shea and David Clifford took control in the middle of the field and points from Liam Buckley and Cian McCarthy gave them a commanding lead. Fossa finished the half with David Clifford scoring a brilliant goal to leave them leading 3-04 to 0-06 at the break. On the resumption, Gary Cronin cracked home a goal in the opening minute, however St Michaels/Foilmore did rally scoring 1-1 without reply. Fossa settled again with some great defensive play and David Clifford added 4 points along with a Ryan Sheehan goal to leave them comfortable winners on a score of 5-08 to 2-08. Results of Round 2 Senior League Cromane 0-04 Milltown/Castlemaine 2-12 Laune Rangers 0-14 Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-07 Beaufort 1-11 Keel 0-07 Laune Rangers 0-14, Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-07 Laune Rangers Seniors began the 2016 season on Sunday morning with a Mid Kerry League tie against Glenbeigh/

Glencar at JP O’Sullivan Park in terrible weather conditions. A good opening day for Laune Rangers saw them claim a win, but more importantly give some important game time to players with just a fortnight until the Round 1 of the County League. Seven of the victorious U21 team played following their Mid Kerry Championship victory last week, and their match fitness showed on the day. John O’Shea was reliable as ever on frees and supplemented them with two fine efforts from play. Débutante Paul Larkin and returning Conall Kelly impressed in defence when required in the first half, while the three second half points from David Costello were all excellently taken. Fixtures Round 3 Senior League Sunday 13th March all games 2pm Beaufort home to Miltown/Castlemaine Laune Rangers host Keel Glenbeigh/Glencar entertain Cromane Scór na bPaistí Finals will be held in the CYMS Hall Killorglin Friday next 11th March at 7.30pm Best of luck to all clubs taking part.
