Let’s Dress To Impress This St Patrick’s Day

A Whole New Look For Killarney’s Online Presence A RAPT gathering of businesspeople enjoyed a preview of the brand-new Killarney.ie website at the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce lunch at The Brehon on Monday. Kellie Doherty, sales and marketing executive of Killarney Chamber, took everyone through the website which offers an enticing window to Killarney for visitors and locals. “A lot of research was done prior to building the site,” said Kellie. “We looked at countless destination websites and I am confident that this new Killarney site is one of the most competitive in the marketplace in terms of design, functionality and usability.” Adding that the site will be “a very powerful tool for promoting Killarney going forward”, Kellie noted: “The objective was to create a website worthy of a destination like Killarney. It is very image-focused with powerful imagery throughout the site. Contrary to the previous site, it is 100% visitor focused – outlining everything per-

tinent to a visitor; mainly things to see and do, from the adventurer to families, it has it all.” There is also an enquiry facility in each profile which allows a visitor to contact businesses directly. “This particularly relevant if you don’t have your own website,” added Kellie. The packed gathering was especially appreciative of the website’s new destination video, produced by KTOWN Media and accompanied by music provided by Seo Linn. The website is owned by Kerry County Council with content managed by Kellie Doherty, Killarney Chamber. “I have to say thanks to John Sheehan in Egg Design who built the site and who is a fellow Chamber member,” said Kellie. “I found him very efficient in bringing my ideas to life; he works above and beyond to get the job done and is always there to help.”

THE team behind St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne is thrilled with the response to the second annual event with the parade getting under way in all its Technicolor glory today. The theme of the festival is Ireland: Past, Present and Future and festival chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly of MD O’Shea and Sons encourages everyone to get out early on the day of the parade and join in what will be a spectacle for the whole family. Killarney Advertiser is delighted o be part of the event. Committee member Helen Sheehan of The Killarney Grand Hotel added: “We have had a great response from the local business community both from a sponsorship level to local businesses getting involved with the festival.” The committee advises that the parade floats and vehicles have to arrive at Mission Road from the Port Road and Cathedral Place side. Traffic will not be allowed to travel down Mission Road towards the Cathedral. “The spectacle we have in store would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors and we would ask that they be supported wherever possible,” added Helen. Committee member Bernadette Randles said: “The planning is almost complete, all we hope for is a fine day so that the vibrancy of this year’s parade can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, and be sure to get in to town early for the many surprises we have planned.” Meanwhile, the festival committee encourages every local business to get green. “Following on from last year’s hugely successful greening of Killarney we want to add more landmarks, let’s turn Killarney completely green,” said Anne Marie. Other events include a céilí mór on Scotts Street on March 18 from 5pm and a party at the Grand Hotel featuring Ruaille Buaille. Killarney Lake Lore and Lies Boat trip returns this year on Saturday, March 19, at 1.30pm. Tickets are available from Eason. There will be plenty of free parking again this year, including at all three second-level schools, Holy Cross NS and the Old Monastery as well as Penney’s multi-storey car park on St Patrick’s Day.

Michael to lead the way as grand marshal of parade CENTENARIAN Michael O’Connor will lead the way as grand marshal of Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day parade today. Michael, aged 103, featured in the acclaimed Older than Ireland documentary, and is delighted to take part in the parade which commences at 2pm.

THERE have been calls to tackle the uneven surfacw on the N22 at Minish Level Crossing. Making the proposal at the March meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Michael Gleeson urged Kerry County Council and Iarnród Éireann to rectify the matter. “For too long this level crossing has been a danger and discomfort for cyclists and drivers,” said Cllr Gleeson. Kerry County Council replied that it hopes to carry out works this year to resolve this issue. It is in consultation with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (formerly the NRA) and Iarnród Éireann.

Question Can you explain how the census works? Do I have to complete the form? Answer The Census of Population counts every person who is in the State on a particular date. It establishes the size of the population in the State and it also helps to provide an accurate measure of population changes due to inward and outward migration. The census takes place every 5 years and is carried out by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The next census will be on Sunday 24 April 2016.

KILLARNEY HOUSE:

Memories from the Kitchen

In 1945, World War II came to an end, Cork beat Cavan in the All-Ireland football final, and Tess O’Donoghue started work in Killarney House. She was just 15 years of age, but she lived at the top of Ross Road, so she was very familiar with Killarney House, where her father, Tim, worked as a butler, first for Valentine, Viscount Castlerosse, and then for his brother, Gerald. Tess’s first experience of Killarney House was a dramatic one, when she fell into the pond as a two-year-old and had to be revived with a sip of whiskey. Doing odd jobs in the kitchen proved to be a far pleasanter experience, and she enjoyed the work, until the arrival of a new cook. Tess recalls the day when the replacement cook demanded a knife, and when the young girl brought her the wrong one, the cook threw it at her. Tess fled the kitchen and ran home, where she announced that she would not be going back to Killarney House to work. Lord Gerald’s sister Lady Cecily arrived at the O’Donoghue home later that evening, however, and announced that the cook was to be replaced—with Tess. The girl was still in her teens and had no formal cookery training, but she soon picked up what she needed to know to keep the residents of Killarney House well fed. Groceries were ordered from TT O’Connor in Killarney town, with meat supplied by Flemings’ butchers, fruit and vegetables grown in Killarney House gardens, and venison in season. The house was comfortable and well equipped, and the Kenmares made easygoing employers. Tess prepared four meals a day and was otherwise left to her own devices, so she would head off on her bicycle around the estate in the afternoons. Summers were busy, when Gerald’s sisters Dorothy and Cecily came to visit with their children and their staff, so Tess often did not finish work until 10pm. January was another hectic time, when guests arrived for the annual shoot, but Gerald suffered from poor health and entertained little. After he died in 1952, his niece Beatrice Grosvenor inherited the house. She moved to London in 1953, taking Tess with her. This marked the end of Tess’s time at Killarney House, as she married in 1956, but she remembers her days there as among the happiest of her life.

The census counts everyone who is present in the State on the designated night, including visitors who usually live abroad. Under the Statistics Act 1993, you are legally obliged to complete and return the census form. If you refuse to provide this information, or if you deliberately provide false information, you may be fined. Teams of enumerators deliver census forms to every household and to every other type of place where people may be present on census night (such as hotels, guesthouses, hospitals, ships). Everyone who is actually on the premises on census night, including visitors, should be counted. Census enumerators call to all households to deliver forms before census night and then call back to collect completed forms. Enumerators all carry ID and can help if you have difficulty completing the form. The form includes a wide range of questions, including age, marital status, sex, place of birth, level of education, type of employment and housing characteristics. All the information that you give on the census form is confidential. The CSO only uses it for statistical purposes and no other organisation (including government departments or agencies) can access information from the census that would identify you in any way. When you have completed the form on census night, sign the declaration at the end of it and keep it safe until your enumerator calls back to collect it. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

THE signatories of the 1916 Proclamation were commemorated on Tuesday at the opening of a Community Garden of Remembrance as part of the 1916 centenary celebrations in Killarney. The garden, in front of the courthouse, was officially opened in a ceremony led by broadcaster Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh and a number of local schools participated. The committee of St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne organised the grand opening, which was attended by Killarney Municipal DistrIct Mayor Cllr Bobby O’Connell, Killarney Chamber President Kate O’Leary and local councillors. The garden has three elements – an engraved life-size replica of the 1916 Proclamation, a flagpole with the Tricolour, and seven trees to represent the seven signatories of the Proclamation. “This is a great addition to Killarney. We hope it will be a nice place for people to visit in this historic year and for the next 100 years,” said Helen Sheehan of the St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne committee. The 1916 Gardens of Remembrance Ireland and her diaspora is a Glór na Cásca Infinitive with the objective of commemorating the Easter Rising, celebrating and honouring the lives of those who signed the Proclamation and those who fought in the cause of Irish freedom. Glór na Cásca includes representatives from all political parties and groups as well as trade union, cultural and Irish language representatives and descendants of the men and women who participated in the Rising. “These gardens will also ensure public engagement on a local and global level fore the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising,” said Senator Mark Daly, Oireachtas member of Glór na Cásca.

Killarney Gardaí Issue Warning As Thieves Target Mobile Phones THIEVES swooped on parked cars in the Killarney area over the past weekend, making off with valuable goods including mobile phones and other electronic devices. As part of an on-going crime prevention initiative, Killarney Gardaí are raising awareness in relation to the theft of mobile phones and would like all members of the public to consider the key points to protect against the theft of their mobile phones. “Dial *#06# and save a screenshot of your IMEI number. Email the image to yourself,” said Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí. “Keep your phone locked and enable the PIN security and phone finder features.” Keep your phone out of public view and don’t call or text while crossing the road, advise Gardaí. “Don’t leave your phone behind in the car,” said Supt Murphy. “Report phone theft or loss to the Gardaí and your service provider.”

latest news | photos | keeping you up to the minute ....

Editor’s View The true cost of stolen mobile phones THIS week it was revealed that mobile phones are the item most likely to be stolen, with some 7,000 snatched last year. On Sunday evening I discovered just how it feels to be targeted in this way when I was robbed of both my work and personal smartphones. In recent years, there have been increasing incidents of mobile phone theft in Killarney, with flint-eyed thieves prowling car parks, both in the town and in the vicinity of Killarney National Park, waiting to pounce on unattended cars. It’s said that many of these raids involve gangs that swoop in and out of town for a day or so to make off with their ill-gotten gains. How proud they must feel of their parasitic way of life. Having left my car for little over half an hour, everything seemed as it was on my return. It was only when looking for my phones an hour or so later that I discovered they were missing from the bag I had stowed out of sight beneath a seat (I know, I’m kicking myself too – why didn’t I take it with me, as I usually do?). It transpired the thief or thieves had used a tool to break in through the driver’s window, leaving marks that were only discovered much later. They had also diligently relieved me of my Kindle (invaluable to me but hardly worth a fortune to anyone else), and some cash. Gardaí said the number of phone thefts in 2015 equated to almost €3m worth of stolen property. Their figures show 60% of robberies involve the stealing of a mobile phone, and that 40% of thefts take place at night (my phones were taken between 8pm and 9pm in a very busy, well-lit car park). Gardaí this week urged everyone with a phone to make sure they know its IMEI number; this makes it easier to trace phones which have been stolen and allows the owner to block its use. Take it from someone who has had a couple of days of hassle blocking numbers – keep your IMEI number to hand and better still, never leave your phone or any other valuable in your car no matter how safe the car park seems. To access your mobile phone’s IMEI number, dial *#06# on that phone, and the 15-digit number will be displayed. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

Hospital grounds get a makeover SOME 30 volunteers from the Killarney Teagasc Certificate in Agriculture class undertook to do a community project in conjunction with Killarney Tidy Towns committee at the Killarney Community Hospital as part of their leadership module of FETAC level 5 Certificate in Agriculture course. They gave the green area in front of the hospital a makeover with the addition of a selection of native trees, said Killarney Tidy Towns/Killarney Looking Good chairwoman, Yvonne Quill. “The grounds have been prepared for the addition of many herbaceous and nature loving plants and shrubs and these will be planted in April,” added Ms Quill.

Green Day For Killarney Landmarks IT’S pretty magical to see the now-annual greening of Killarney. The build-up to St Patrick’s Day in Killarney has seen a whole host of iconic buildings in the town all lit up in green. The buildings include St Mary’s Cathedral, St Mary’s Church of the Sloes, the Franciscan Friary, the Methodist Church and the Old Monastery.

Olivia Buckley, of Olivia Buckley Events, and St Patrick’s Festival committee member with the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, said: “The theme of St. Patrick’s Festival in Killarney this year is ‘Past, Present and Future’. We are aiming to showcase Killarney’s beautiful and enduring buildings which are an intrinsic part of Killarney’s past,

present and future. “The initiative not only aesthetically brings the St Patrick’s Festival to life at night, it is much more than this. It is so wonderful to bring such key landmarks in the community together and the churches have been very receptive to allow us green their buildings.” The greening of the buildings is one of a number of initiatives in

Killarney to celebrate St Patrick’s Festival. The four-day family event will include storytelling on board the Lily of Killarney, Kiddies Treasure Hunt, Céilí Mór, Kids Fun Zone, Post Trad Disco and most importantly the St Patrick’s Day parade.

Historic Buildings Turn Others Green With Envy BATHED in an otherworldly green glow for St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne, Killarney’s churches boast a fascinating history in their own right. The Methodist Church, built in 1911, is the only surviving Methodist Church building in Kerry. Designed by Augustus Northmore Welby Pugin, St Mary's Cathedral was built between 1842 and 1855. St Mary's Church of Ireland, designed by Joseph Welland in the 1860s, stands on the site of the original Church of the Sloes, or Cill Áirne, which gives Killarney its name. A church has stood on this site

since the ninth century. The Franciscans first came to Muckross, outside Killarney, in about 1448. Belgian friars who were helping to re-establish the English Franciscan Province came to Ireland in 1858 to restore the ailing Irish Province to its former state of observance of the Franciscan Rule. After a short stay in Gorey, they moved to Killarney in 1860. A Killarney Franciscan church was opened in 1867 and the Franciscan Friary opened here in 1879.

Disappointment Over Senate Decision IN DISAPPOINTING news on the county’s political front, this week we learned the Labour Party in Kerry will no longer have a TD or senator. Senator Marie Moloney of the party said she is “gutted” by advice from party bosses not to stand, because the party doesn’t have enough councillor votes to get her back into Leinster House. This means Labour will no longer have national representation in Kerry after Deputy Arthur

Spring’s loss of his seat in the general election. However, Senator Marie Moloney hopes to contest the next local election in three years’ time. Labour will now be represented by two councillors from Tralee, Graham Spring and Terry O’Brien. Also leaving national politics is Senator Ned O’Sullivan (Fianna Fáil). He has called time on his political career after being first elected to the Dáil in 1997.

Kilcummin Hospice Walk PUT your best foot forward for the annual Good Friday Hospice Walk on March 25 which will commence at 10.30am. Registration takes place from 10am when donations will be accepted. In 2015 the walk raised €2843 for the new Palliative Care Unit which is under construction in Tralee. “The organisers say a sincere ‘thank you’ to all those who helped and took part in the walk,” said a spokesperson. This year’s collection will also be donated to the Palliative Care Unit and the registration and starting point is at the reception hall. “This year all those registered will be entered into a draw. The prize for adults is dinner for two and consolation prizes, while the prize for children is a large Easter egg, with a consolation prize also up for grabs." There will be a choice of two walks, 5km and 10km. Refreshments will be served in the hall after the walk. “Please come along and support this very enjoyable walk which suits all age groups and is a great opportunity to meet and chat with your community,” added the spokesperson. “There will also be a memory book where you may sign names of loved ones who died of cancer. A special Mass will be celebrated after Easter for all the names on the book.”

THE All-Ireland Colleges Senior Football semi-final yesterday saw St Brendan’s College, Killarney, triumph on a scoreline of 4-15 to 0-9 over St Benildus. Evan Cronin scored to 2-3 as St Brendan’s demolished their Dublin opponents to keep alive hopes of a first Hogan Cup title since 1992. All but one point of the successful Killarney side’s winning tally were collected from play at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh. The writing was on the wall from a long way out as St Benildus had to wait until the 27th minute for their opening score – and were 16 points down before Callum Pearson pointed. St Brendan’s were runners-up most recently in 2008 and 2010 but look well primed to replace fellow Kerry school Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne as All-Ireland Colleges champions.

Quest Killarney Adventure Race

Adventurers Make Tracks To Killarney

AN EPIC day of adventure was on the cards in Killarney last weekend with over 400 hardy souls competing in the Quest Adventure Killarney event as part of St Patrick’s Festival of events. The endurance athletes cycled along the most scenic ancient paths of Killarney National Park, through the famous Black Valley, where they ran a section of The Kerry Way, along Cummenduff Glen, through O’Sullivan’s Farm, the last house in the valley. Then they embarked on a tough incline onto the MacGillycuddy Reek’s to Curraghmore Lake, before turning back to complete their trail run transition at Casey’s Farmyard. From there they faced a final bike ride through the Black Valley, along the challenging Kenmare Road to the finishing line at The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney. The race included a 55km Expert challenge and a 33km race of strength and great fun. Barry Cronin powered through the landscape winning the overall race in an incredible record time of 02:28:42. In second place was Michael Buckley in a time of 02:28:54, third home was James Warburton in a time of 02:32:49. It was the Kerry ladies that stole the show in the Adventure Race. Dingle elite athlete, Ailise Deane’s jawdropping result was 02:32:49, while triathlon athlete, Lisa Stapelbroek of Templenoe had a time of 02:56:48. Race organiser Oliver Kirwan from Quest Adventure said: “Records were broken, the weather held firmly for all the athletes. We witnessed magnificent racing on Saturday, but without the support of the residents of the Black Valley, staff at Killarney National Park, The Gleneagle Hotel and local volunteers, the event could not happen. The atmosphere, good humour and banter among the athletes and hard working organisers added to the great success of the day. It’s all part of the Quest Adventure Experience.” The next Quest Adventure Series in the diary is Quest Glendalough on April 23, Quest Achill on September 3, and he Epic Quest Killarney on October 1.

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is hosting its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition. Here Jill Duggan explains how toning tables can help you streamline your body

THERE are a range of toning tables on the market some more sophisticated than others and offering a comprehensive number of programmes. There is no doubt that they can make a valuable contribution. But before discussing whether using one is going to address your needs, let’s be clear as to exactly what they do. Through a set number of movements that target the upper and lower body as well as core areas such as the back and abdominals, a table will work muscles that are no longer put under pressure as

well as realign the posture of an individual. In addition to the benefits of greater muscle tone that will be achieved, circulation and flexibility will also improve. All these movements are completed without impact on the body as a whole or strain on an individual area.

In common with all exercise machines, it is essential to get a good tutorial on how the machine is operated and the programmes that are available. This will not only be important simply from a practical point of view but it will also ensure that you can gain the maximum benefits from using the table.

Call now to book your free trial to see how they can benefit you! Telephone Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966.

Why Killarney is a retail mecca AT THIS time of year one always notices the wonderful buzz around the town’s streets as locals and visitors alike enjoy a spot of retail therapy. The ultimate shopper’s paradise, the town and its hinterland offer you prime opportunities for browsing to your heart’s content. The streets of Killarney are lined with specialist food and clothing shops as well as world-recognised brands, and you can pack in a wonderful day’s shopping as you stroll around. From clothing and footwear to jewellery, books, newspapers and magazines, music, health and beauty items, gourmet treats, or the latest mobile phones, technology or gadgets, Killarney has it all. Also located in the centre of the town, and adjacent to Killarney’s bus and railway stations, is the must-visit Killarney Outlet Centre.

Dressing comfortably for your shopping expedition SERIOUS shopping is a serious business and it’s always good to embark on an expedition well prepared so you make the most of the experience. If you are in the market for a new outfit or new wardrobe, bear in mind that you will be taking off and putting on clothes a lot in fitting rooms so dress accordingly.

38

Killarney Advertiser 17.03.16

Footwear Be sure to wear shoes that easily slip on and off. Constant bending over to tie your shoes or buckling them can waste a lot of time and takes the fun out of shopping. It also may reduce your likelihood of trying things on before you buy them (obviously a huge no-no!).

Stretchy clothing Try to avoid wearing restrictive clothing. Stretch skirts and shorts as well as leggings are easy to slip on and don’t require zipping or buttoning. Likewise give complicated tops or jackets a wide berth as these can cramp your style also on such expeditions!

Vest top A simple tank or vest top can be essential. The perfect layering piece, it lets you see how items work with what is already in your wardrobe. Also when stores set a limit on garments you can bring into the fitting room, wearing your own camisole saves you an item.

Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and with the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band's music videos. There's only one problem: he's not part of a band...yet. She agrees, and now Conor must deliver what he's promised - calling himself "Cosmo" and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music trends of the decade, he forms a band with a few lads, and the group pours their heart into writing lyrics and shooting videos.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 22:14–23:56: This passage is a very rich one and it would be a mistake to attempt to pray each and every part of it. Almost every phrase has something new: actions, images, symbols, words. When you read the passage, stay with whatever part of it resonates with your own life, but make sure when you pray it that you stay with the passage until you get beyond the violence and the horror to find a good news lesson for you. A few specific points taken at random are: In this scene of great tragedy, there are people helping others, either reluctantly or with compassion: Simon, the women of Jerusalem, the criminal on the cross, and Jesus himself. Note the differences in the manner in which the help given (as a burden, with sympathy, etc). What has been your experience of helping and being helped? Despite the persecution by the leaders Jesus still shows forgiveness. When have you seen that spirit of forgiveness in yourself or in others? In your experience what is the effect of a forgiving spirit ... or the absence of that spirit? Towards the end there is a ray of light. Jesus says “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” His relationship with his Father was one of trust, even at a moment like this. What difference has it made to you in times of difficulty or pain to have a relationship of trust with God, or with someone else? John Byrne OSA

PLAYING OUR PART

WE TEND to be uncomfortable with audience participation, especially when it is sprung on us at the last minute. Many people get embarrassed or clam up when a microphone is thrust in their face. TV audience members can even look uncomfortable when expected to sing or clap along to a performance. I was once cajoled up on stage with a friend during a comedy show, and I still cringe at the memory. More than most, this week's liturgy calls for our participation. First, we are caught up in the drama of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. We are comfortable enough with this – holding up our palm branches and imagining ourselves celebrating and supporting Jesus as he arrives into town riding on a colt. But our participation takes on a darker tone during the reading of the Passion, and we soon find ourselves joining in with those who question and accuse Jesus. Before long we are shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” and taunting Jesus on the cross to ‘save himself if he is the Christ of God’. It is enough to make even the most complacent among us uncomfortable. Palm Sunday and Good Friday are the only two occasions when the congregation is invited to take part in the reading of the Gospel. What strikes you as you play your part today?

The Provocateur

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

LET’S ALL TRY AND BE CONSIDERATE OF OUR FELLOW ROAD USERS MOTORISTS, cyclists and walkers – we all have a right to get from A to B safely. As someone who, like most of us, is well used to the pleasures and perils of using our roads in all three guises at various stages, I am very much aware of the trials and tribulations of all three modes of transport. First off, as a motorist, why oh why do some cyclists hog the road? Cycling is a wonderful pastime and nowhere more so than in Kerry, the home of some of the world’s most breath-taking cycle routes. But there seems to be sense of entitlement among a select few two-wheel Tour de France wannabes that they can hog the middle line regardless of the angry tailback of frustrated motorists. Or what about those overly companionable duos or groups who will insist on pedalling at least two abreast, blithely and arrogantly chatting while a motorist is forced to drive along behind at a snail’s pace.

Most cyclists have been shouted at or abused by a driver and while this is never acceptable, the idea that some cyclists don’t obey the rules of the road is a constant bugbear of certain motorists. Now, let me tell it also from the point of view of the cyclist. Being almost clipped by cars is not much fun. Neither is being knocked to the ground by someone carelessly whacking open their car door. True story: As a friend and I made our way from school on a busy New Street years ago, a woman suddenly opened the passenger door to get out of the car, while the traffic had stalled, thus flinging my friend to the ground. The woman, stone-faced, emerged from the car, as we thought, to check as to the welfare of my friend, lying shocked, battered and bruised on the ground. But no, this lady looked at the car door and then down at the injured cyclist and said, “It’s a good thing you didn’t dent the door of my car.” Another complaint I have is about walkers who don’t care about an approaching cyclist in the National Park and simply wander out in front of us, forcing us to brake. Last but not least, it’s not all plain sailing for us foot soldiers either. Last Friday as I strolled along the route by Muckross Abbey a cyclist whizzed in from behind between my walking companion and me (we were very much to the side of the path, so there was no excuse!), almost slicing my ear off! No bell, no warning, no apologies. A little consideration from and for all road users is badly needed.

GET ON WITH IT…. While a period of silence from Richard Boyd Barrett, Mick Wallace, Claire Daly and others is most welcome our politicians should understand that when the people vote for them to form a government they should say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, not “I’ll let you know later!” As you read this, it is unlikely you have a Taoiseach or a government and those who are involved in the silly games going on in Leinster House should get on with the job they were elected to do. God knows there’s plenty to do. If the recent General Election taught us anything it is that Dublin, the Pale and the East Coast generally has developed and grown at a much faster pace than the rest of the country. There is no recovery in many parts of Ireland. During the election, one RTÉ reporter was absolutely gobsmacked when he lost mobile phone cover between Kenmare and Killarney. He couldn’t believe this could happen in 21st-century Ireland. He couldn’t understand how he could be out of touch with the rest of the world for over 20 minutes. Can you imagine how he would feel if he had to spend his entire life in rural Ireland? While the growth in Dublin has been phenomenal, there are problems. Housing is just one of the huge problems. Homelessness is becoming a major problem. And it’s about to get a whole lot worse. Now, those hoping to become first-time home owners in Dublin will have to come up with over €50,000 as a deposit for a new house. That’s an awful lot of money to find. It doesn’t matter where they are living, a young couple would spend their entire youth coming up with that kind of money. How can anyone be expected to save €50,000 while living in rented accommodation, paying massive rents and living on more-or-less fixed incomes? It means people will spend longer in private rented accommodation, thereby reducing supply as the available housing isn’t being recycled and this, in turn, will lead to higher rents as the supply of houses will not meet the demand. And this doesn’t apply to young people only: older people, caught in the private rented sector will face higher rents from landlords who will quickly see the market can take higher rents because of the housing shortage and he will also quickly realise that older tenants on pensions and fixed incomes may not be the ideal tenants to maximise the potential of his properties. Our politicians need to get on with it. Now!

Illegal gorse fires blaze in Kerry KERRY fire fighters battled illegal gorse fires in Killarney, Tralee and Caherciveen on Monday night and are bracing themselves for some busy times ahead. Up to 15 firefighters were called when a raging gorse fire was reported in Kells on Monday afternoon. Two houses were close by but fortunately the fire fighters kept the blaze under control. The fire service was also called to a scene of a gorse fire on the Short Mountain in Tralee. This fire was spotted blazing during the evening from Blennerville and the town. It is currently illegal to burn gorse between March 1 and August 31 but landowners continue to do so. The Kerry Wildfire Interagency Group, which involves the fire service, Kerry County Council, and landowners, is tasked with monitoring the situation. -

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SCEILG MHICHÍL Sceilg Mhichíl stands proudly and defiantly off Slea Head. Sometimes it’s difficult to make it out as it can be shrouded in fog a lot of the time. The fog adds to the mystery and the isolation. I have never visited the craggy island but, even from the mainland, it looks inhospitable, barren, windswept and bare. Because of its remoteness and the difficulty in accessing it, the island has always possessed a mystique and it was this that attracted monks in search of peace and quiet there in the first place many centuries ago. The outcrop, which is home to protected colonies of seabirds as well as stone “beehive” huts used by the monks, was used in 2014 to film the closing scene of “Star Wars:The Force Awakens.” The island was also visited again last year by a crew filming the series’ eighth instalment. When the makers of Star Wars had completed the key scene in their latest blockbuster on the remote island off the West Coast of Ireland, Fáilte Ireland availed of the opportunity. A campaign played up the links between Skellig Michael, and its Hollywood rebirth as the intergalactic hideaway of Luke Skywalker. One advert, emblazoned with the Star Wars logo, noted that the island had been raided by Vikings in 823 AD, before adding: “Next up: Stormtroopers?” But now the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, already the third highest grossing film in history, has triggered a row over whether access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site should be increased to cope with the thousands of tourists who now want to visit Skywalker’s Celtic lair. Boat operators and hotel owners in West Kerry, are calling on the Irish government to extend the period of the year when visitors are permitted, following a flood of bookings to the area. But they are strongly opposed by conservationists who complain that Skellig Michael’s archaeological and ecological treasures are being imperilled by the high profile gained by the island’s association with the most successful movie franchise of all time. But visitors hoping to pay homage to the Jedi warrior may well be disappointed. Under measures brought in several years ago amid concern that visitors were already too high, there is a strict limit of 180 visitors per day on the island and boats are only allowed to dock between May and October. Even then, bad weather means that up to half of those open days are lost. Business owners, who complain the restrictions have cost them €2.5million in lost takings, are asking for the period in which visits to Skellig Michael are permitted to be increased from April to the beginning of November to try and reduce the bottleneck of light-sabre-wielding tourists. A team of around 60 technicians and actors, reduced from an original proposal of 300, went to the island in 2014 to film. The number was cut following concerns that disruption could have a negative effect on nesting seabirds including puffins, kittiwakes and Manx shearwaters. Conservationists and tour guides pointed out that the eco-system on the island, where the only way to reach the ruins of the medieval monastery is to climb 600 steps carved from granite by monks who first arrived in the sixth century, is “extremely fragile” and said the marketing campaign advertising the island had been ill-advised. There are those who believe that if the conservationists of the time had their way the monks would never have been allowed on the island in the first place. Others believe it is too fragile to exploit or even tamper.

Pigeons wearing backpacks monitoring air pollution

are

A FLOCK of pigeons complete with sensorcarrying lightweight backpacks are helping consumers track air pollution in London. The birds have technology on-board to not only monitor air quality, but are also reporting on it live by tweeting what they find in the skies above the city. Users can also tweet the birds giving their location and receive a report back on the air quality in that area. The three-day scheme has been created by Plume Labs, a technology firm that specialises in helping people track and reduce exposure to air pollution, has created pigeonairpatrol.com where London residents can view a live map. Romain Lacombe, the CEO at Plume Labs, said: “Putting air sensors on the back of pigeons goes beyond raising awareness of this problem and helps Londoners understand the impact of pollution in an accessible, tangible and immediate way.”

North Korea sentences US tourist to 15 years’ hard labour NORTH KOREA'S highest court has sentenced an American tourist who allegedly attempted to steal a propaganda banner from a restricted area of his hotel to 15 years of hard labour in prison. Otto Warmbier, a 21-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate student, was convicted of subversion and sentenced in a one-hour trial at the Supreme Court. Mr Warmbier was arrested in early January as he tried to leave the country after visiting as a tourist with a new year tour group. In a statement before his trial, he told a gathering of reporters in Pyongyang he wanted the banner "as a trophy" for the mother of a friend. North Korea announced the arrest in late January, saying Mr Warmbier committed an anti-state crime with "the tacit connivance of the US government and under its manipulation".

MICROLINO: ISETTA FOR A NEW ERA IN 1955 the iconic BMW Isetta “bubble car” was the first mass-produced car to deliver fuel consumption of 3.0L/100km. Now, a Swiss company wants to reinvigorate the design for the new era, in the form of the zero emission Microlino. Dubbed “the next small thing” in the automotive world. Measuring just 2.4 metres long – short enough for two to fit in a regular car space – the Microlino is powered by an electric motor, has seating for two, features a single front door for cabin access and features a number of neat features including a removable Wi-Fi stereo. The idea is intriguing and there’s certainly a place for a vehicle of this stature in the megacities of the world. Despite its tiny size, it is reported that the cabin space isn’t as cramped as expected while there’s little doubt the 400kg machine is likely to be extremely manoeuvrable. The makers says the car has been developed with app-based mobility systems in mind, such as car-sharing and car-pooling platforms and the Microlino will be “affordable for everyone” whether renting or buying.

Top Police Supercars Around the World WE ALL drool over supercars and wish to own them or to say the least wish to have an opportunity to drive them once in our lifetime. But what if your job was to drive these supercars and all for a good cause? The good cause being catching bad guys; sounds like a Hollywood movie plot? If you thought that fast cars used by cops were only restricted to movies, you’re wrong. There are quite a few police forces around the globe which use supercars in their fleet to catch criminals, especially the speeding ones. While these supercars are used to chase the bad guys, they are also used to promote tourism in their respective countries and cities. Here are a few Police forces and their superfast and super expensive steeds. New South Wales, Australia – Porsche 911 Italian Polizia – Lamborghini Huracan Dubai Police Force – Ferrari FF, Lamborghini Aventador: The only thing faster than this one will be the Bugatti Veyron!, Mercedes G-Class Brabus 700 Widestar, Audi R8, Ford Mustang GT, there is more... Chevrolet Camaro SS, Aston Martin One-77, Lexus RC-F, McLaren MP4-12C, BMW M6 and a Bentley Continental GT. Wow. Abu Dhabi – Nissan GTR West Midlands – Lotus Evora Columbia – Ferrari 348. The Columbian police confiscated the Ferrari 348 from a drug lord. They later hoped to auction it to buyers but since they didn’t find any, they decided to tweak it up and use it in their fleet. If the Garda Siochána were to choose a supercar, what would it be? We would like to hear your suggestions.... lets us know.... New South Wales, Australia – Porsche 911. The car is extremely eye catching and once you spot this one in your rear view mirror, it’s best to give up any thoughts of out-running it.

Last year’s Cartell.ie winners Donagh Kelly and Conor Foley in their Ford Focus WRC.

Buddies celebrates its 10th anniversary in style BUDDIES PLAY CENTRE, Park Road, Killarney, celebrates its 10th anniversary this March. The owners of this family-run business, Gavin and Jacqui Lythgoe, opened its doors for business in March 2006. They wanted to open a facility for the families in Killarney and surrounding areas that offered exciting play, great parties and value for money. Their play centre is now known for its fun and friendly staff and high standards of food and hygiene. Buddies has become the local children’s favourite household name, having thousands of their happy, excited faces passed through the doors for playtime or birthday parties over the last ten years. So to celebrate Buddies’ 10th birthday the centre is launching three new party rooms. A very popular Frozen Princess party room has already created an exciting buzz among the girls. There’s a superhero room with the very popular Disney Avengers and a new Disney Fairy party room. The centre already offers a pirate-themed area

as well as Clayfun party packages for all those artists out there. The owners of Buddies would like to thank their staff, past and present, especially managers Elaine Murphy and Ruth Suter who work very hard to make Buddies the success it is. “And a big thank you to all our customers past and present for your loyalty, kind words and for sharing your children’s very special moments with us,” stated the owners. “We hope to share many more happy times with you all.”

Cartell.ie Killarney Rally of the Lakes PLANS are at an advanced stage to create a motorsport festival on the streets of Ireland’s most famous town and more details of this exciting event will be announced at the official launch of the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes on Monday, March 28, at Scotts Hotel, Killarney. The Killarney & District Motor Club, organiser of the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes, has announced details of this year’s event which will take place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, April 29-May 1. Anthony O’Connor, clerk of the course, said: “One of our main objectives this year was to bring the rally back into the heart of Killarney and base the event completely in and around the radius of the town. “We have achieved this by using a new stage format, a choice of new and old stages and the use of Liebherr Container Cranes as the centralised service area for the entire event.” Once again for its seventh consecutive year Ireland’s leading vehicle history record company Cartell.ie returns as the main title sponsor of the Rally of the Lakes 2016. Killarney Advertiser is delighted to support the event, as is Ordnance Survey Ireland and the Gleneagle Hotel Group, who have been supporters of the Rally of the Lakes for many years and continue as associate sponsors. The 37th Rally of the Lakes will be a counting round of the Clonakilty Black Pudding Irish Tarmac Rally Championship; PlasticBags.ie Southern 4 Rally Championship; and FIA European Celtic Trophy Cup. The newly appointed clerk in of the course Anthony O’Connor and the organising committee have taken a strong look at the current characteristics and changes of rallying in Ireland. The three-day event will begin with a ceremonial start in Killarney’s town centre on Friday, April 29. Entries will open shortly at http://www. shannonsportsit.ie/evo/Login

New chefs have recipe for success

SIX aspiring chefs from Kerry and Cork have successfully graduated from Fáilte Ireland’s pilot commis chef programme which was delivered by Just Cooking, Cookery School, Killahane, Killarney. They are now ready to join the tourism sector and start their culinary careers. Initiated last November, the commis chef programme was designed to respond to the growing skills need identified in the hospitality sector. To date presently in excess of 95% of participants have secured jobs as an outcome of this programme. A total of 190 participants completed the practical, hands-on, competency based programme which was delivered in 12 locations across the country over an 8-10 week period and provided all the skills a person would need to begin working in a professional hospitality kitchen (see note to editor for a list of participating businesses). The successful participants can now build on their new expertise and progress on to the culinary apprenticeship currently in development in conjunction with the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) and the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) and others.

John Mulcahy, Head of Hospitality at Fáilte Ireland, said: “Fáilte Ireland recently developed this new commis chef programme in response to a growing need within the tourism and hospitality industry. We are delighted to be able to provide this opportunity to Ireland’s next generation of aspiring chefs here in Kerry and we have received very encouraging feedback from both participating businesses and students.” The cookery schools involved have also played a key role in transferring skills, and ensuring that the students find good jobs quickly, particularly as the sector prepared for St Patrick’s Day and Easter, he added. “I would like to congratulate each of the six graduates today together with their instructor Mark Doe, Just Cooking, and wish them all the best in their future culinary careers, where the potential for success is enormous,” said John. Fáilte Ireland is currently evaluating the completed pilot programme with a view to informing the development of the culinary apprenticeship.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

AGM of Retired Nurses Association

Get on your marks to help with cystic fibrosis support ON BEHALF of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) and the wider cystic fibrosis community, I would like to thank the people of County Kerry for their continued generosity and to ask for their support once more in the upcoming VHI Women's Mini-Marathon. Cystic fibrosis is a challenging disease and CFI works hard to support people with CF and their families by providing a range of vital services such as grants for exercise equipment, fertility treatment, transplant assessment, counselling and bereavement support. We also fund the development of dedicated state-of-the-art cystic fibrosis facilities in our hospitals. This ensures that people get the best possible care and that issues such as cross-infection are minimised. As a small member-led charity, with most of our funds coming from the generosity of the public, raised through fundraising events and donations, we rely hugely on the readers of the Killarney Advertiser for their support. The VHI Women’s Mini-Marathon on June 6 is a major fundraising event for CFI. This year we are aiming to recruit one thousand

women from all over the country to take part and help raise €100,000 for cystic fibrosis. So for anyone that would like to take on the 10km challenge, while at the same time supporting a really worthy cause, I would urge them to register for the VHI Women’s Mini-Marathon and then sign up with CFI for a fundraising pack. Ireland has some of the most severe types of cystic fibrosis and the most cases per head of population in the world. We have more than 1,200 people living with cystic fibrosis in Ireland, with an average of 30 new cases diagnosed each year. By taking part, you can make a real difference to helping support cystic fibrosis care in Ireland. Will you be One in 1,000 for CFI? For more information, visit http:// www.cfireland.ie/, telephone LoCall 1890 311 211 or email fundraising@cfireland.ie Philip Watt, Chief Executive, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, CF House, 24 Lower Rathmines Road, Dublin 6

FURTHER EDUCATION COURSES AND PROGRESSION TO THIRD-LEVEL EDUCATION

tion through the Higher Education Links Career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan explains how to access Scheme. This scheme provides progression opportunities for students achieving a QQI further education courses FURTHER education or Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses are available to those with a Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification, through Further Education Colleges throughout the country These are full time courses offered over one or two years with QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) accreditation awarded at Level 5 for one-year courses and Level 6 for two-year courses on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). A range of subject areas is available to choose from to improve employment prospects or to progress to further studies. A Further Education Course may offer students an alternative route to progress into higher-level educa-

Level 5 or Level 6 Major Award (full certificate) and who are interested in applying for Higher Education courses through the CAO. Students will need to meet the entry requirements of their chosen course as well as any other additional requirements there may be. There are approximately 38 higher education institutions including Universities, Institutes of Technology and private third level colleges offering progression to third level courses. Universities only offer places from a reserved quota and not all Level 8 honours degree courses accept a QQI Level 5 or Level 6 qualification as an entry requirement. Institutes of Technology generally accept applications based on any QQI Major Award in open competition with Leaving Cert Candidates.

This route could be an alternate choice for some school leavers who may not be sure about immediately committing to a 3-4 year course of study. The option to study a similar area, in the form of a oneyear Further Education Course may provide them with an insightful experience influencing long-term plans. They may also give some students a second chance to score higher points than they obtained in the leaving cert exam. Further information on the scheme can be obtained from CAO at www.cao.ie, www.qqi.ie or from the Admissions Office of the individual Higher Education Institutions. •You can contact Eithne Teahan by emailing info@careeroptionskerry.com or calling 087-2028185

POWERFUL NOVENA

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame. Your resting place we visit, And put flowers there with care, But no knows the heartache, As we turn and leave you there. If tears could build a stairway, And memories build a lane, We’d walk right up to heaven, And bring you home again.

10th anniversary

O’Keeffe

Sadly missed by your family.

Remembering with great love our wonderful Mum, Sheila O’Leary, Riverside Coolcorcoran, Killarney, whose 20th anniversary occurs on the 22nd of March.

Always remembered by your loving family.

This novena never fails. Say it on the hour for 9 hours. Jesus who has said, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be open to you. Through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother, I knock, I ask that my prayer will be granted (Make your request). Oh Jesus, has said all you ask the Father in my name, he will grant through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. I feel confident my prayer shall be answered. (Make request). This novena is to be said at the same time every hour for nine consecutive hours one day. Promised publication, never fails. P.M.C.S.

In loving memory of Theresa MacSharry, 89 Ardshanavooly, Killarney R.I.P. who died on the 6th of March 2006. Slowly the leaves of memories fall, Gently we stoop and gather them all, They bring a smile, sometimes a tear But always a wish, that you were here, Today is a day of memories so sad, Of the one we love, and wished we still had, Time slips by but you still stay, As near and dear as yesterday. Sadly missed by Jack, Maureen, Eileen, Brian and Mark. xxx

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.M.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett was delighted to have eventually got the Men’s Club competition schedule for the calendar year of 2016, “off the ground” with the staging of the singles stableford competition which was played over our “Mahony’s Point” course on last Sunday, the 13th of March. The entry of over 150 members was a fair testament to both the anxiety of the Men’s Club Membership to compete in a Club competition, and was also a fair reflection of the popularity of this competition. The competition was played in excellent golfing conditions, and despite the recent atrocious weather the course was in “fair shape”, which was reflected with over twenty of the scores of those who played, at 40 points or more, and one of the minor placings was decided by the better points number on the very last hole, and second place was won with a back nine holes score of a massive 25 points. The competition does not qualify competitors for either handicap reductions or for points back, due to the temporary nature of many facets of the course, but of course, our Club Handicap Secretary James Curran, and his team will be taking due cognisance of those with “exceptional scores”, and a possible handicap reduction may be “on the cards” for some of those with the best scores down the line. 1st William D. O’Connor with 44 points playing off 13 handicap. 2nd Ciaran Fleming with 43 points off 28 handicap. 3rd Jonathan Sparling with 43 points off 9 handicap. 4th Con Daly with 43 points off 27 handicap. 5th David MacIndoe Jnr. with 42 points off 13 handicap. Best gross winner was Simon Gallivan with a score of 68 strokes, who plays off 1 handicap. Category 2, winner was Ian Cronin with 42 points, off 7 handicap. Category 3, winner was Peter Lawlor with 41 points, off 15 handicap. Category 4, winner was Teddy O’Sullivan with 42 points off 18 handicap. St. Patrick’s Day, “open” singles competition on Killeen. The next competition will be a singles stableford “open” competition which will be played on Thursday next St. Patrick’s Day, and the time sheet is almost full at this time of going to press, this will be played on “Killeen”, and the competitors will get the opportunity to see for themselves the excellent progress that has been made with both the repairs and the upgrade of many holes on the course that have been undertaken by Course Manager Enda Murphy and his team over the last two months or so. Sunday the 20th of March “mixed foursomes” competition.

The competition to be played on next Sunday will be the “mixed foursomes” which will be played under the “Scotch Foursomes” format, scheduled to commence at 10.30am with a “shotgun” start.

Killarney Celtic

Celtic Park to Host U18 International Celtic Park has been announced as the host venue for the U18 Centenary Shield Match between Ireland and Scotland on Thursday, April 14th. This is a great honour for the club and testament to the standard of our facilities and the hard work done by wonderful volunteers on previous occasions. Club Shop Our range of Celtic gear has been updated and is now available from the club shop on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2.00pm. Contact Mary Lyne 0866485809 or Mags O’Neill on 087 6451913 for enquiries. 40th Anniversary Commemorations Our Club has a big birthday when it turns 40 this year. To help mark the occasion and to preserve our history for future Killarney Celtic generations, we will shortly be compiling a Digital Archive of club photos, news reports, memorabilia etc. That will require current and past members to rummage out whatever you might have in display cases, old biscuit tins and photo albums. We’ll be publishing more details here and via the press on the project and how you can get us your materials (and get them safely back). Kennedy Cup: Reigning champions Kerry have drawn Wicklow, Carlow, and Donegal in this year’s competition in UL. Best of Luck to Brendan Hogan and the Kerry U17 League of Ireland team who play Cork in Mounthawk Park next Sunday at 2.00pm Results Denny Premier: Castleisland 2 Killarney Celtic 7 Another superb result. Celtic were outstanding here and created numerous chances, executing seven in total. Peter McCarthy was the hero of the hour with a whopping four goals, every single one a gem, with Wayne Sparling, Stephen Hayes, and Gary Keane on target as well. This wasn’t just about attacking, though. The Celtic defence of Chris O’Leary, Brian Spillane, Jamie Spillane, and Fergal O’Donoghue were not just resolute, they were hugely creative as well, linking well with a quick, clever, and energetic midfield of Conor Randall, Matt Keane, Gary, and Stephen. Replacements Joe Hurley, Conor McCarthy, and Kevin Moriarty were outstanding when introduced.

Denny Premier B: Killarney Celtic 6 Skeliga 2 Matt Keane and Chris Coffey got a brace each, with Wayne Sparling and Denis Sheahan also on target in a great team display. Jimmy Falvey Youths Cup: St. Brendans Park 1 Killarney Celtic 1 Celtic went 1-0 up in a very exciting game and it looked like it would be enough, but Park fought to the end and managed to grab an equalizer three minutes into injury-time. U16 Premier: Tralee Dynamos 2 Killarney Celtic 2 Celtic had to show real nerve to come back from behind twice, Micheal Devlin scoring our first and Peter O’Sullivan with the second. After that we dominated but just couldn’t get through for a winner. U16 Girls: Killarney Celtic at home to Killarney Athletic, Saturday, 2.30pm U14 Premier: Tralee Dynamos 0 Killarney Celtic 1 This was a very, very tough battle between two evenly decided teams, with a neatly executed penalty by Niall McGillicuddy giving us a narrow win. U14 Div One: Killarney Celtic 2 Fenit Samphires 2 Darragh Cremins and Paul O’Sullivan put us ahead but Fenit battled back bravely for a hard-earned but deserved share of the spoils. U12 Premier: Killarney Athletic 0 Killarney Celtic 0 A cracking game in tough conditions. Celtic should have led at half-time, having dominated possession in the first half, but we just couldn’t break through. It was a different story in the second half, Athletic got well on top, and we needed a great marking job by Sean Fitzgerald on the impressive Alex Higgins and three world class saves by man of the match Peadar Kelliher between the posts to earn a valuable point. U12 Div One: St. Brendans Park B 4 Killarney Celtic B 0 The lads put in a huge effort but Park were simply a better outfit; this was a much more encouraging display by Celtic than the scoreline makes it sound. Very well done to both teams. U12 Div Two: St. Brendans Park C 4 Killarney Celtic C 3 Celtic trailed 2-0 at the break but showed a huge improvement in the second half, with Eoghan Crowley scoring twice and Calvin O’Sullivan once. In the end, we were unlucky to lose out by the odd goal in seven in a brilliant game. Congratulations to U12 goalkeeper Peadar Kelliher on making the Kerry Schoolboys/Schoolgirls Team of the Week. Fixtures Munster Junior Cup Quarter-Final: Killarney Celtic away to Janesboro (Limerick), Sunday, 2.00pm U17 League: Killarney Celtic at home to Killarney Athletic, Monday, 8.00pm U15 Premier: Killarney Celtic at home to Listowel Celtic, Saturday, 12.30pm U15 Div One: Killarney Celtic at home to Iveragh, 11.00am U13 Premier: Killarney Celtic away to St. Brendans Park, Saturday, 10.30am U13 Div One: Killarney Celtic B away to Killarney Athletic, Saturday, 10.30am U12 Girls: Killarney Celtic away to Mastergeeha, Saturday, 2.00pm Lotto Lotto results are available on our face-

Killarney Swimming Club

Well done to all our swimmers who took part in the Munster Long-Course Championship which was held at the University of Limerick campus on the 12th and 13th of March. Long-course events are held in Olympic-size pools under Olympic conditions and are only open to the best swimmers in the province so we, as a club, are enormously proud of everyone who took part. Under 14 Girls – Congratulations to Margaret O’Brien who won silver medals in both the 200 metres Butterfly and the 400 metres Individual Medley, piercing the water with some spectacular dives on the day. Well done also to Wiktoria Niewiadomska who picked up a beautiful silver in the 50 metres Freestyle. Wiktoria was invited recently to join the Swim Ireland Munster squad so, for that, a special mention must go to her parents, Isabela & Rafai, who do all the hard work driving to training and galas. “Behind

every successful swimmer …” etc. Wiktoria is only thirteen year old, so watch out for that name in the future. Over 15 Girls – Congrats to Marta Doberschuetz who turned on the style to take silver in the 50 metre Breaststroke and bronze in the 100 metre breaststroke. Marta is well-recognised at this level for her technically beautiful stroke. Over 15 Boys – Robert O’Brien was simply superb in the pool winning a magnificent gold in the 400 metre Individual Medley, in what is probably the hardest race of them all. Robert, and his sister Margaret who won medals in the under 14 category, specialise in long distance so they were very comfortable in the longer races over the long-course. Thanks to our coaches, Cathal O’Brien and Leontia Doody who gave huge support and encouragement to all swimmers over the weekend. Thanks also to all parents.

Rathmore Gneeveguilla Community Games

U10 Girls Indoor Soccer County Finals Well done to our panel of players who travelled to Milltown to their new community hall last Saturday morning with their trainer, Owen O’Leary to compete with 5 other teams in the County Final. Great start to the day was a win over Ballyduff who gave us a great game but a goal from our side, secured the win. Our next game was against Milltown and this game was full of excitement with plenty goals , ended up level 2-2 in the second half ,until a late goal from Milltown secured their entry into the final and who also went on to win the Gold medal. That left us a game against Ardfert for 3rd or 4th position, we went straight into this game and it was a fierce battle. Even though we had some great chances, even one shot hitting the cross bar, the bronze medal ended up in Ardfert’s corner but we were still very happy and proud of our girls who ended up in fourth place, with a county cert. All the girls played their heart out and a big thank you to all the parents for their support and to our trainer Owen O’Leary. Also a big thank you to all the organisers of the event in Milltown , who made the day most enjoyable for everyone. The Hall is a fantastic credit to the local community in Milltown. We have also decided that on this day we will have a “Spring Clean” of the boathouse after all the recent flooding. It would be great to see everyone there with their rubber gloves out! TRAINING: To the disappointment of many of our rowers yet another regatta has been cancelled. Galway Head of the River which was to take place this Saturday 19th has been called off due to weather. We don’t seem to be having much luck so far this year. We will continue to train and it looks like some nice weather is forecast over the next week at least. NEW MEMBERS: New members are always welcome for both Sliding and Sixing so if you think rowing might be the sport for you why not come and give it a try.

Killarney Cycling Club

Youth Training Great Training last Saturday Morning with both the U12s and U14s really showing the results of the last few weeks training. U12s doing a fantastic job group riding on the short loop around Beaufort, the transition from the track around Killarney Racecourse to the road looked seamless and The U14s taking to the board of works, down to Killorglin and back through Kilgobnet some even opting to cycling back to Killarney and taking on Barleymount. Skill, Fitness and determination all coming together for the season ahead. Well Done everyone! Onwards and Upwards!!!! Anyone interested in joining our team of youth cyclists contact Mark Murphy on 087 4123196 or email youth.killarneycyclingclub@gmail.com Rás Luimní On Sunday last our riders were in action in Caherconlish for Ras Luimní for the opening round of the National League. The route was a 30km undulating loop with an extremely fast run in to Caherconlish village with almost a 1 Kilometre meter uphill effort to the finish line. Podium finish for Conor Kissane Great race by all today with Conor finishing second in A3. Also finishing well was Jamie O’Donoghue and Roland Eager and unfortunately Mike Murphy who rode a great race got a puncture on the last lap. Finishing well in the A1/2 race was Richard Maes and Leigh Hewerdine finishing inside the top 20. It was a very tough and fast race as they averaged 41.2 km an hour over an 120km race. In the A4 race we had Mike Kissane who also finished very strong in the main bunch. Great weekend of racing. Well done to all!

Killarney Darts Town League

The Town League season is coming to a close with two of the group finals having been played last week. First up was Group 4 final in Murphy’s Bar College Street on Thursday, 10th March, between Nugget Night Owls and Mustang Sally’s A. This Final was the first to 5 Sets. Nugget Team: Padraig Sweeney, Colin Davidson, John Moynihan, Neil O’Meara, Damien Dennehy, Tom Murphy, Conor Breen and Chris Myers. Mustangs Team: Mike Cotter, John Doona, Alex Goggin, Shane Hurley, James Hurley, Ryan Patten and Thomas Templeman. Nugget got off to a great start winning the first set 2 – 0. Mustangs were not to be outdone taking the next 4 sets and making it 4 – 1. The Nugget took the final single set, going into the break Mustangs winning 4 – 2. Mustangs just needed one more set for the win. After the break Nugget came out fighting winning the first doubles set. It now was 4 – 3 to Mustangs. The second set of doubles Nugget got off to a flying start winning the first leg, but alas it was not good enough and Mustangs took the next two legs to take the set and overall victory. Final score Mustangs A 5 - Nugget Night Owls 3. Highest Score of Group 4 was Ryan Patten and MVP on the night was Alex Goggin. The Committee would like to thank Sean Murphy and Staff of Murphy’s Bar for hosting the final, Roland Sauter for Chalking, Dale McCarthy for Calling, Maureen McCormick for photos and Sapphire Signs Rathmore for Trophies. The second of the Group finals took place On Friday March 11th with Group 2 Final between Klub Bar Kilcummin and Golden Nugget Team The Nugget Old Timers taking place in Mustang Sallys. Both of these teams when they played each other during the league , won their home games. 5- 4. Who knows what could happen in a neutral venue. In the final each leg counted, so it was first to 14. Klub Bar Team: Tim O’Sullivan, Darragh Brosnan, Daniel O’Leary, Mike Brosnan, Ian O’Leary, Diarmuid O’Donoghue, Donal O’Sullivan and Davy Brosnan. Nugget Old Timers Team: Gary McCormick, John Doyle, Darren McCormick, Damien McCormick, Stephen O’Sullivan, Mikey Cronin, Jeremy Costello and Tommy Cronin. After the first three games of singles, it looked like the Nugget could start packing and be heading home early as the score was 7 – 2 to The Klub Bar. The Nugget Team had other ideas on their mind and had no notion of just packing yet and came out in the latter of the three singles winning 7 – 2 to make it all level at 9 a piece going into the break before the doubles. After a lot of team talking and tactical changes during the break, with both teams bringing in a sub. The Nugget got off to a good start winning 2 – 1. This was the first time the Nugget took the lead making it 11 – 10. The second Nugget doubles team played their hearts out, finishing 116 in the second leg and won three nil, and to take overall victory for the Nugget making it 14 – 10. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Kerry defeat Mayo in Allianz League KERRY recorded their first win on Mayo soil since 2011 when a much-improved second half performance saw them gain three League wins on the trot at McHale Park last Sunday (2-13 to 0-14). Kerry got the better start but Mayo hit back to dominate most of the first half and it took a goal by Johnny Buckley after fine work by Darran O’Sullivan and Colm Cooper to put a kinder look on the scoreboard at the break at which stage Kerry trailed by just a single score, 1-3 to 0-7. Kerry came out in the second half with all guns blazing however to outscore the home-side by 1-10 to 0-7 and they did so despite being reduced to fourteen men after the dismissal of Kieran Donaghy on a second yellow in the 54th minute. By that stage Kerry had got their second goal when Donnchadh Walsh pounced after a mix up in the Mayo square and Eamonn Fitzmaurice will be particularly happy with the way Kerry responded when a man short matching mayo score for score till the end. A semi final place is now a very achievable target with Kerry having responded very positively to the opening League losses to Dublin and Donegal. There is a break in the League until March 26

when Kerry travel to Clones to take on Monaghan and Kerry wind up their campaign with a home game against Cork in Austin Stack Park.

Dr Crokes

East Kerry Super League - Round 4 Dr Crokes 0-19 Listry 0-7 Even though we won this game by a margin of twelve points we had to fight hard for our scores, especially in the first half, at the end of which we led by just three points, 0-8 to 0-5 We probably had an edge in fitness and this showed in the second half when we added on eleven points to Listry’s two. Our opponents didn’t have many attacks in this thirty minutes but we defended well and out cut many of their offensive moves. A worrying thing for our management would be, that only two of our starting six forwards, scored from play, Paul Clarke hitting over six and Brian Looney 0-3. This victory qualifiers us for the League Final. Registration Membership fees are now due and must be paid before 31 March 2016 for all members. Players must have paid membership before being considered for Club teams. There is a variety of rates to suit all. For detail and to pay this years membership, contact Registrar Frances O’Sullivan (086-3895230) at the earliest opportunity. Frances will be at the Clubhouse on Saturdays from 10.30am to 12pm.

Credit Union Senior Football Leagues Commence

The Credit Union Senior Football Leagues swing back into action this coming weekend with action in all five Divisions. The Leagues commenced way back in 1971 when Austin Stacks, John Mitchels, Kerins O’Rahillys, Waterville, Kenmare, Desmonds, Laune Rangers and Keel played in the inaugural League with Waterville defeating Laune Rangers in the final. The following year, it was decided to form three leagues, Senior, Towns Cup and Junior and in 1973, the Leagues really took shape in the format we now know them with three divisions. The leagues have stood the test of time since and are the envy of most counties. Promotion and relegation methods have changed over the years, but, as was the case last year, a three up and three down policy applies again this year. The Leagues are once again sponsored by Chapter 23 of the Irish League of Credit Unions who commence their 14th year as sponsors.

Division 1

Pride of place this weekend goes to the meeting of Dr Crokes and Austin Stacks in Lewis Road, a game that doubles up as the 2015 Division 1 final. It will be recalled that the sides also met in the 2014 final last year when Stacks won a thriller after extra time. Dr Crokes have swept all before them in Divisional Leagues this year and seem to have been refreshed by the return of Pat O’Shea to the helm. Austin Stacks once more under Stephen Stack, were disappointed not to retain their championship title last year and will be hoping to get the year off to a positive start. Games between these two sides rarely fail to give value for money and Sunday’s game should be no different. Sunday will also be a big day for All Ireland Junior Champions Templenoe who play their first ever game in Division 1 away to John Mitchels, while the other promoted side, Kenmare entertain Milltown-Castlemaine in their first game back in Division 1 since 1989.

as this is a tough opening game to the league. Minors Fossa Minors lost to St Pat’s in Tralee on Saturday evening in the 2nd round of the County League - despite playing with the aid of a slight breeze Fossa went in at the break, trailing on a scoreline of 1-04 to 04, the Fossa points coming from Eamonn Murphy, 2 from Cian O’Shea and another from Lee Linehan. The highlight of the first half was a penalty save by goalie Alex Rennie who had a tremendous game throughout and exceptional defending by the captain Cian O’Sullivan. In the 2nd half, despite having a lot of the ball, Fossa found it hard to get scores and only had a solitary point from Eamonn Murphy to show for their efforts. They defended very well and were without a couple of players which didn’t help matters but overall they gave a good account of themselves despite the final outcome. Final score St Pats 1-09, Fossa 0-05. All-Ireland Champions A huge congratulations to three Fossa girls, Grace Cahillane, Ciara Griffin and Anna O’ Reilly who won All-Ireland medals with ISK when they defeated Presentation Secondary School, Tuam in the All-Ireland Junior Championship in Nenagh on Saturday. grounds in Derreen. If you’d like to sign up your 4-10 year old you can do so at the pitch this Saturday and every Saturday throughout March. New members more than welcome! Legion 3-16 Glenflesk 0-9 Legion ran out comfortable winners in this Super League encounter at Derreen on Sunday morning. Conor Keane converted a penalty and also notched a goal from play. Tom Moriarty was in fine form too, racking up five points In the second half Glenflesk improved as both teams ran the bench. Derek Twomey scored a goal from a great team move and David O’Sullivan kicked two nice points. Substitute Darragh O’Doherty scored a great point following a seventy yard run. Jeff O’Donoghue kicked a few nice scores for Glenflesk but Legion were a bit too strong on the day. Scór na bPáistí Our fabulous set dancers secured second place as did our ballad who sang beautifully on the night. Sarah Trant gave a lovely rendition of John Condon in the solo singing category and Áine Devlin won first prize with an outstanding performance of ‘Ach I Don’t Know’. We’re looking for parents, players and supporters to row in behind us in this venture as every euro raised goes towards improving the club’s facilities. If interested please contact Seánie Culloty on 087 2225325. Try it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes. Clothes Collection We’ll be collecting unwanted clothes throughout the year. The next collection is on Saturday, April 16th before twelve noon. All unwanted clothes, bags, belts, shoes, blankets, towels, curtains etc. will be accepted, as will old phones and laptops.
