"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Councillor Michael Gleeson and Paudie O’Mahoney.

Time To Raise Umbrellas Over Main Street? THE introduction of street coverings over parts of our town centre is once again being discussed in Killarney. After raising the matter at the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Michael Gleeson noted that he had in recent years also highlighted it to the now-abolished Killarney Town Council. "As a town councillor, I proposed to Killarney Town Council that serious consideration would be given to the introduction of street coverings at locations where locals and visitors gather to re-create and relax,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “The council accepted that the proposal had merit and decided to investigate the matter. Towards that end the factory that manufactures street umbrellas was visited. The council was giving serious consideration to the erecting some on the pedestrianized part of Main Street.” It was intended to have detailed discussions with property owners along that street and their views would be carefully considered, added Cllr Gleeson. “Sadly, before progress could be made, Minister Phil Hogan wielded his ruthless axe and abolished the town council,” he said. “I felt that my original proposal may have some merit and some interest for the Killarney Municipal Area council. The response from the council was that the proposal had merit but that it needs further examination in relation to location, streetscape impact, procurement, ongoing maintenance and cost. We await the result of those investigations and the views of the public." Engineer Paudie O’Mahoney has over the years highlighted his concept for large canvas covers for the streets. “We live in one of the wettest areas of the country,” he reasoned. “If we put out a few large canvas overs on the street I guarantee you people will like them.” Both Mr O’Mahoney and Cllr Gleeson noted that street coverings would be of immense benefit when it came to staging outdoor events in Killarney as well as attracting shoppers, offering as they would shelter from the elements no matter what the weather.

06 Killarney Advertiser 29.04.16

Editor’s View We Are Always At The Mercy Of Weather Gods’ Whims “IT’S like something out of Mary Poppins!” was the reaction of a few of us in the office to the mock-up on this page of cheerfully hued umbrellas floating above Main Street. You see street coverings used in towns and cities across the globe but the idea of a practical way of waterproofing (or weatherproofing) our own streets to make them more user-friendly to pedestrians always seems to come as a novelty to many of us in Killarney. It’s pretty ironic considering we live somewhere that is always subject to the elements. We are very much at the mercy of the weather gods’ whims and hope for their good humour when it comes to staging outdoor events. Although living in a country where pelting precipitation is a fairly loyal enough companion, we are always the least likely to be equipped with

adequate raingear and weather-appropriate footwear. When the heavens open over our streets, it will always be us locals you’ll observe gently shrieking (cartoon cat-style) in surprised panic with a flimsy jacket or sweater suddenly pulled over our heads as our overseas tourists dart bemused glances at us from under the hoods of their practical raincoats. Yes, there’s something magical about umbrellas when used in a decorative sense and of course our picture is an impressionistic take on the concept being mooted. But overall, the subject calls to mind the Pat Shortt sketch in which the comedian decrees that Ireland would be “a lovely little country if you could only roof it!” EVE KELLIHER, EDITOR

Gangland Crime Among Issues Highlighted At GRA Conference In Killarney

Question I’ve been getting a One-Parent Family Payment but I will no longer qualify when my youngest child turns seven. What is the Jobseeker’s Allowance transitional arrangement and how do I qualify? Answer If you no longer qualify for a One-Parent Family Payment because your youngest child is over the age limit, you may be eligible for the Jobseeker’s Allowance transitional arrangement (often called JST). This is a social welfare payment that aims to support you into the workforce while also acknowledging that you are parenting alone and caring for young children aged between 7 and 13. JST allows you to work part-time and still receive a partial payment (depending on your earnings). The rules that apply to Jobseeker’s Allowance (JA) and JST are very similar. The means test is similar and the maximum weekly rate of payment is the same. The main differences between JA and JST are that on JST: You do not have to be available for and genuinely seeking full-time work. This is to allow you to meet your caring responsibilities. There are childcare supports available if you do find work. You must be capable of work but you do not have to be fully unemployed for 4 out of 7 days. This means that you could work part-time for 5 days and still receive a payment (subject to the means test). For example, you could work mornings only while your children are in school. Income from work is assessed with a €20 earnings disregard per day of employment (up to a maximum of €60 per week). Any earnings above that are assessed at 60%. You cannot cohabit with another person while you are getting JST. You must continue to parent alone. When you start getting JST you will be scheduled to attend an activation meeting with a case officer. The purpose of this meeting is to identify and access supports (such as education, training and employment schemes) that will prepare you for full-time employment. If you do not participate in this process, you may be paid a reduced rate of JST (a penalty rate) or you may be disqualified from your JST payment. If you were getting a Fuel Allowance with your OFP you can keep this when you go onto JST. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

THE Garda Representative Association tackled issues including gangland crime at its conference in Killarney this week. Rank-and-file Gardaí said unarmed officers should not be sent to situations involving firearms. The GRA also says it’s unacceptable they haven’t had tactical training in eight years.

Using Pedal Power In Memory Of Inspirational Joan HER love for the outdoors and wonderful community spirit are among the many endearing traits popular Killarney lady Joan Herlihy will be forever remembered for. Joan Herlihy (nee Quinlan, Castleisland) sadly passed away on February 12, 2015, from cancer. “She was a great outdoors enthusiast who loved nothing better than taking to the hills and walkways of Killarney and its surrounds,” said her friend Marie Shannon. Now Joan’s children, Laura and Paul, her husband, Dave, and their extended family and friends will be getting on their bikes on Sunday, May 29, for a charity cycle in Joan’s memory. “The first aim of the cycle is to remember and pay tribute to an amazing, inspirational woman who loved to cycle,” said Marie. “The second aim of the cycle is to raise much-needed funds for the Oncology Unit in Kerry University Hospital, where Joan received excellent care and treatment over the years.” There will be two routes to cater for various levels of fitness. Both begin and end at the Torc Hotel, Lissivigeen. “These are all routes that Joan cycled when training for the various events and in particular takes in her much-loved Muckross Dinis route,” said Marie. Joan loved to cycle and completed many charity cycling events including the Cycle against Suicide in May 2014 when she cycled from Cork City to Killarney on day one and from Killarney to Tralee the second day. “As the cycle made its way from Tralee towards Limerick, Joan headed into the Oncology Unit in Kerry University Hospital to have her bloods taken. She also completed the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in 2013 and 2014 – a major achievement in itself but more so because of the fact that on both occasions she was receiving chemotherapy – a sign of her great strength and determination,” said Marie. For details on the cycle, contact either Laura on 085-7538266 or Marie on 087-9849882.

Strictly Come Dancing Killarney raises e56,045 for charity

Talented Dancers In Full Flight

IT WAS a sell-out success when it took place in February and on Wednesday evening the organisers of Strictly Come Dancing Killarney were thrilled to present an impressive €56,045 to the beneficiary, the Killarney/South Kerry Branch of the Irish Cancer Society. Dancers and organisers returned to the INEC, the scene of the hugely popular productions they staged there for two consecutive years, for the cheque presentation. Over 2000 people packed the INEC in February for the 2016 event. “It was absolutely fantastic and all we can do is thank each and every one of the dancers and each and everyone of those that came to support the event,” a delighted Kathrina Breen of the Irish Cancer Society told the Killarney Advertiser. Tripping the light fantastic to victory were Garda Aoife Dolan Twomey and Liam Colleran of Budget Car Hire of the International Hotel. The second Strictly Come Dancing Killarney had Strictly Goes to

the Movies as its theme. The talented troupe included local hoteliers, builders, car dealers, Gardaí, teachers, farmers and care workers. Dance teacher Joe Burkett coached the troupe of 12 couples and the judges included Marina Cassidy, Niall O’Callaghan, Alan Finn and Elaine Canning. This year’s line-up featured Cllr Dan McCarthy, Niall O’Sullivan, Liam McCarthy, Johnny Brosnan, Timmy Moynihan, Kieran O’Halloran, Dermot Healy, Mike Doyle, Richie Fitzgerald, Conor Gleeson, Liam Colleran, Gavin O’Leary, Margaret McCarthy, Marie Carroll O’Sullivan, Aoife Cronin, Marie Coffey, Mary Cronin, Danielle Favier, Mary Hartnett, Vera Healy, Christine Tangney, Michelle Brennan O’Donoghue, Aoife Dolan and Shella O’Donoghue. The 2015 show raised almost €55,000 in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. And, whisper it, Strictly’s many fans are already hoping for an encore performance next year!

“YOU’D be standing a very long time with a box to collect that!” was the verdict of a grateful Kathrina Breen of the Killarney and South Kerry Branch of the Irish Cancer Society after the society was presented with the proceeds of the Lough Lein Anglers charity fishing competition recently. Over 90 anglers took to the waters of Loch Lein for the event and landed a whopping €6243 for the cause. “Even before a fly was cast on the water, the charity event was already a success,” said Rory O’Flaherty of the organisers. At 11am, starter Dermot O'Mahony flagged the flotilla of boats off for the competition. “The lake was flat calm – not the best fishing conditions. However, after a light shower, the westerly breeze picked up and fishing conditions improved for the rest of the day,” said Rory. “It was reported that 'the West' had fished well the previous day, so a large number of boats headed in that direction. It was ironic then, that the competition was won on the opposite end of the lake.” Noel Duane (eight trout) and his partner Eddie Shanagher (six trout) fished the sandy Lake Hotel shore. “They were in the right place at the right time and finished first and second in the competition. PJ O'Brien had five fine trout to finish third,” said Rory.“More than half of the anglers brought trout to the weigh-in at Ross Castle that evening. Everyone reported that fish were moving in most parts of the lake. The prizegiving took place that night after a hearty meal in The Dromhall Hotel.

Safety To The Fore At Rally Of The Lakes RALLY fans are looking forward to the ultimate in opportunities to see some top-class motorsport in Killarney this weekend thanks to the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. And Gardaí, organisers and the community are pulling out all the stops when it comes to placing safety at the top of the agenda. Rally organisers and Killarney Gardaí this week unveiled details of the campaign, during which a mobile incident command unit will be in Kerry for the first time. This new crackdown on so-called “boy racers” has been on Killarney Gardaí’s agenda in recent weeks. Officers will now have the technology to help assess vehicles for compliance with noise regulations, rules governing the levels of darkened windows and drink driving. Last week, a number of young men pleaded guilty at Killarney District Court on Tuesday, April 19, in relation to serious motoring offences. These offences were detected in Killarney in recent weeks by Gardaí targeting “boy racer” activity. Killarney Superintendent Flor Murphy said: “These targeted operations incorporating both high visibility and covert measures will continue up to and including the rally weekend in the Killarney area. “Anyone found by the Gardaí engaging in this type of activity will be immediately arrested and brought before the courts.”

Rally route to entice spectators By Sean Moriarty A NEW spectator-friendly route is the key ingredient of this year’s Cartell. ie Rally of the Lakes. All of the action, over 16 special stages, takes place within 25km of the town, with the bulk of the action set for mid or east Kerry. Over 140 crews from all over Ireland and beyond are set to tackle the county’s biggest motorsport event. Unusually, the rally does not open with a run over Moll’s Gap. Instead the daunting ribbon of tarmac tat runs parallel to the Killarney to Millstreet main road and known locally as Gortnagane is the opening test. This

16

is followed by loop of stages bear Millstreet and Rathmore before the rally heads east to new territory around Milltown. The Dromin Hill stage, last used by the Circuit of Kerry Rally in the early 1980s, makes a return alongside spectator favourite Rockfield before the day’s action concludes around 6pm. Sunday is run over a lot more familiar territory with Moll’s Gap and Balleaghbeama proceeding newer versions of Carragh Lake and Shanera. Unusually, Caragh Lake is the final stage of the rally before the crews head for the podium finish at The Gleneagle Hotel.

Free ear wax removal for over-55s in Killarney

34

Killarney Advertiser 29.04.16

WHILE ear wax normally works its way out of the ear on its own, if it is blocking the ear canal and causing hearing loss it may neeed removing. The good news? Hidden Hearing at Unit 5 Scott Street, Killarney is offering free professional ear wax removal to persons over 55 years of age on Friday, May 6. Clients will also receive a free hearing screening to further diagnose or rule out any hearing issues. The procedure is performed by a Hearing Care professional who has received specialist training in both ear irrigation and dry mopping from Aston University in Birmingham. “Hidden Hearing is the only hearing professional company to offer the wax removal service,” said Dolores Madden of Hidden Hearing. “Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance in the ear canal and helps to keep ears healthy and prevent infection. In most cases, ear wax works its way out of the ear on its own however, if it is blocking the ear canal and causing hearing loss it may need removing.” Dolores added: “We are delighted to be offering this service to our customers in Killarney as we see a lot of people in our clinics with ear wax build-up. In many cases, an aural issue will not be hearing loss related, but simply a build-up of too much ear wax. However, if left untreated, excessive ear wax can cause hearing loss and interfere with a hearing test or the use of a hearing aid. Until now the options have been expensive costing up to €60 but now Hidden Hearing offers a free solution for over 55s.” To book an appointment contact Hidden Hearing, Killarney on 1800 882 884. do with it. The drink has attracted some controversy in Scotland where its association with drinking culture and antisocial behaviour have been emphasised. In our own experience, and we sell quite a bit of Buckfast all year round to fine upstanding folk, this has been overblown. Buckfast, like all alcohol, can be abused.

METHOD Mix oil, maple syrup, honey and vanilla extract in a bowl. Mix through the dry ingredients except the dried fruit and coconut. Line two flat trays with parchment paper and spread mix out evenly. Bake for 15 minutes at 125C, mix through the coconut and dried fruit and bake for 15 minutes more. Allow to cool and then store in an airtight container for up to two weeks.

Grace Notes Music can change lives

We have all experienced a moment where a song has resurrected a memory or a feeling out of the blue, says singer Grace Foley

I RECENTLY joined a panel of young people, all in our 20s and 30s, on Frank Lewis' Saturday Supplement on Radio Kerry. The topic was “Our Passions” and I chose music as my topic. In preparation for the show I had to really think deeply on my experiences as a singer, and what stood out to me was not the praise; not the nerves; it was the connection with people. Through my singing I have been given the glorious opportunity to connect with people through my own voice. At times this has meant singing a couple's favourite song at their wedding or helping someone in their deepest moments of grief. As performers, we can get so caught up in our own insecurities and triumphs that we forget that the real triumph is to reach into people's hearts and souls; to make someone smile or cry when it has been so long since they have done either. While speaking on the show I said that to sing to console has changed me as a person and I really meant that. Sometimes people's emotions can be trapped so deep inside them that they cannot experience them on a physical level, yet there is something in a melody, or a simple lyric that can reach right down into that place and allow those feelings to surface. We have all experienced a moment where, completely unexpectedly, a song has resurrected a memory or a feeling out of the blue. Music is a powerful thing which connects people and changes lives. It certainly has changed mine.

WHAT TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH YOU can still plant lily bulbs in pots for summer colour. These are great as you can move them around the garden or patio. Use a good multi-purpose compost and a 12-inch pot is sufficient for three bulbs. Cover with more compost and water. Dig a 5cm or more layer of compost or manure into your bed. Apply some mulch around your trees and shrubs. Feed your trees and shrubs. Honeysuckle and clematis will now be putting on growth, tie in new stems.Trim your winter flowering heathers. Deadhead daffodils and tulips, leave the foliage intact to die back naturally.

Bring your garden inside WE ALL love the idea of bringing the outdoors in, and an orchid arrangement will help you do just that. It’s really simple to put together a stunning orchid display. All you need is a pot or bowl from around the house. I’ve used a footed white bowl from Lane Brothers in Tralee and an old trifle bowl for mine. I also have some orchid compost, from Ballyseedy Garden Centre, and moss from my garden.

I left the orchids in their plastic pots (for ease of soaking them later) and just placed the orchid compost around them to keep them steady. You can add some small ivy plants if you like, pop the moss on top and voila, you have a very professional-looking orchid arrangement for your table.

Word to the wise – keep it out of direct sunlight. Water orchids when they dry out and don’t ever leave them sitting in water, as root rot sets in and your orchid will die. Depending on where your orchid is situated it will dry out at different times. Just check it regularly and put it under the tap allowing all the water to run through.

You should also mist your moss and orchid replacing the moss when it goes brown. Then just sit back with your cup of coffee, relax and admire your fabulous handiwork!

Let fabulous fabrics enhance your home HAVING fun with fabric and wallpaper colours and textures can transform any home into a palace. Lorraine Wall of Wall’s Interiors created the elegantly classic yet modern ambience in this Georgian-style residence in Mallow. “It is a period home but I have added a few contemporary colours for a young feel, as it is home to a young family,” said Lorraine. “I went for bold colours on chairs and accent pieces, as well as choosing wallpaper appropriately for children’s rooms. There is some old-style furniture but with a blast of colour at the same time.” The wallpaper choices include pieces from the Casadeco range as well as fabrics from the Harlequin Amazilia range. The bathroom features Sanderson Vintage wallpaper in the Squirrel and Dove design while bedroom wallpaper selections as well as fabrics are relaxing and comfortable. Some of the eye-catching furniture in the house uses fabric from the Fontington upholstery range. The kitchen cushion fabric on the windows is from the Prestigious Mezzo collection. The Persian rug in the hallway picks up the teal and duck-egg blue theme. Wall’s Interiors, Mallow, can be contacted on 022-21972 and email lorrainewallinteriors@gmail.com or see www.wallsinteriors.ie

How to Prepare and Paint your Deck Your guide for the perfect painted deck by Pat McDonnell Paints 1. Your decking timber should be free from dust, dirt, mildew, algae and other contaminants. That’s why we always recommend that you use a suitable cleaner before you paint. 2. Decking cleaners are specially formulated to clean and revive weathered or tired looking deck boards, they remove moss, mould, algae and prepare the surface for your coating. We recommend Farbex Multi-Surface Cleaner as your decking cleaner (refer to manufactures instructions on how to use) 3. If your deck has any nail holes or cracks always fill these with suitable External Timber filler. We recommend Prestonette and Osmo Exterior wood fillers. 4. We recommend using either Sikkens HLS or Ronseal Decking Oil/Stains for your deck

5. Always use a high quality applicator when coating your deck, we recommend a 3” or 4” Brush ether by Wooster, Corona, or Harper and Green. Refer to manufactures guide if you can use a Roller as some brands need to be applied by brush only. 6. With all your preparation work done, start at the far end of your deck and apply your coating one/two boards at a time in the direction of the woodgrain.

7. Apply your product in long, smooth strokes and always coat end to end - never stop half way through to start the next board(s) as you will get a uneven finish 8. Most new decks will require two/three coats, a previously coated deck one/two. Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions

‘WE ARE CARETAKERS OF THE PLANET’ ON THURSDAY evening last a large crowd gathered at the new Renewable Energy Centre in Cremur for an information evening on renewable energy systems. Various speakers gave an insight into the broad range of renewable technologies which are now available at Cremur to those wishing to go green and play their part in the race to becoming carbon neutral. The information night covered a full range of sustainable and renewable technologies which included heat pumps, heat recovery and demand control ventilation, solar PV and thermal, thermodynamics, underfloor heating and external air stoves. The new energy showroom has a full range of demonstration and operational models of the various systems on display, covering all aspects of renewable technologies.

“Our aim is to provide high spec, cutting edge renewable technologies, which are affordable to those both planning new builds as well as those wishing to upgrade or retro-fit these systems,” said a spokesperson. “Cremur provides a full installation service from initial site visit to system design, meeting client’s expectations with final handover of their new heating/ventilation systems. We guarantee and fully stand over all of the renewable technologies which we have on show in the new renewable energy centre.” For the homeowner who wishes to install a reliable and advanced heating system, which is highly efficient and reduces their energy bills, the renewable energy centre at Cremur is a one-stop shop for sustainable and comfortable living that won’t cost the earth. By installing one of these systems homeowners can greatly reduce their cost of living whilst doing their bit for the environment helping to secure its future for generations to come.

Exa mples of Conor McCarthy’s work at The Terrace at The Killarney Park Hotel and elsewhere.

Conor brings the outside in ONE gardening expert who is perfectly placed when it comes to making the most of the room outside is Conor McCarthy. Conor, of McCarthy Landscape, offers everything from design concept to execution when it comes to creating enviable gardens for both private and business premises. “I like the idea of connecting nature with the interior of a building,” said Conor. In addition, it is Conor and his team that take care of the window boxes throughout Killarney, ensuring they look their pictureperfect best throughout the year and catch the attention of locals and visitors alike as well as those all-important Tidy Towns judges. “Last year was the first year I took on the window boxes and I succeeded John Fuller in the role,” said Conor. Not only that, but his work at the five-star Killarney Park Hotel’s Terrace Garden has won him a whole legion of new fans. “I sourced all the plants at Shanahan’s Garden Centre in Farranfore for The Terrace and Hogan Associates were the architects involved in the terrace job while the construction work was carried out by a building contractor,” said Conor. Conor’s eye for detail comes from his design background and formerly worked in an architect’s office. “About 50% of my work is new landscaping jobs and the other 50% is groundskeeping, for instance in hotels,” said Conor. Birdwatch TO ENSURE you have some pretty birds to watch out for this summer, don’t forget to keep your feeders topped up with nuts,

seeds, fats or make a bird cake with your kids. Pour some fat over cake or bread, add some seeds, nuts, oatmeal, grated cheese or dried fruits. Use a half-pound of fat per pound of dry ingredients. Coconut shells or yoghurt cartons make suitable moulds. Hang from a tree or a hook. Fruit is also great and may attract several bids which may not otherwise visit your garden. Keep an eye out for tree creepers which are so sweet to watch with their distinctive behaviour of creeping up trees looking quietly for food. When it reaches the top of a tree, it flies down to the base of another tree.

Soak up the sun IF YOU are lucky enough to have a sunroom or conservatory or are planning an extension take a look at Corcoran’s new range of conservatory furniture called Sergio. Make your sunroom or conservatory a place where you will want to enjoy your garden on a wet day or sit in the sun with a relaxing drink after work.

SUMMER GARDENING TIP Use shade cloth SHADE cloth can be essential during the summer Tree fragile Creeper... months. You can use it to protect young seedlings/starts or give larger, more established plants a break from the heat. Shade cloth is available at many garden, home and department stores. There are different grades of “shade” available, depending on the intensity of the sun you are attempting to partially block out. You should also be able to find metal hoops (semi-circles) that can be placed over your garden beds to prevent the shade cloth from touching or damaging plants.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

REMEMBER times of separation from a loved one through change of residence or other circumstances. How has the love between you been a support after the separation? To his followers, Jesus promises: “We will come and make our home with them.” Our God is not a distant God but one who lives in us. What has helped you to be aware of the closeness of God to you? “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” When you have been anxious, who have been the Jesus people for you who were able to calm your anxiety. How did they do this? For whom have you been one who calmed anxiety? John Byrne OSA

MUSINGS

REFLECTING on the Gospel brings home the reality of The Trinity and is so powerful in emphasising the unity of Christ’s followers in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Many years ago, my parents taught me how to make The Sign of The Cross and at my Dublin national school this was reinforced where I was taught to make The Sign of the Cross when passing a Church and when seeing a hearse go by. How beautiful and uplifting it is to witness today’s young Catholics continue to engage in this simple and yet powerful ritual. As a grandparent, I delight when I see my youngest grandchildren in their first attempts to copy their parents making this great sign of faith. How lovely it is to, witness the youngest member of the family begin family meals by leading the grace before meals. Alan Whelan Carnahone, Beaufort

SPECIAL COLLECTION

POPE FRANCIS announced his intention to hold a special collection in all the Catholic parishes of Europe, to provide humanitarian assistance to people in Ukraine. Killarney Parish will be holding this on May 7/8 as a second collection at Masses. Pope Francis asks that Catholics participate in this initiative with special generosity.

YOUTH PASTORAL MINISTRY

The Diocese of Kerry will once again facilitate the course in Youth Pastoral Ministry. This course will begin on Wednesday, September 28, in the John Paul II Pastoral Centre in Killarney. The cost is €200. The course will be delivered over 20 nights – 10 before Christmas and 10 after Christmas. Contact Tomas Kenny on 086-3683778 tomaskenny@dioceseofkerry.ie for more information.

DON’T WORRY

THEY say a problem shared is a problem halved. “Don’t worry” is one of the most reassuring things that a friend can say. Isn’t it a relief when someone assures us there is no need to fret or worry, that everything will be okay? If only for a moment, we can breathe a sigh of relief, take the pressure off ourselves. Even if things are messy now, we dare to hope that all will be well. The words of Jesus in this Gospel are very reassuring. “Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid,” he says. “My own peace I give you.” Jesus was speaking these words to his disciples shortly before his Passion and death. He knew the time was coming for him to leave them. All was certainly not well, and his disciples surely knew that some difficult times were ahead. But Jesus was offering hope and consolation. Don’t worry, he says. I am giving you the gift of peace, a peace the world cannot give. Don’t be afraid. The Holy Spirit will be with you to guide you and teach you. When our hearts are troubled and restless, let us reach for these words of Jesus. In the words of St Augustine of Hippo: “You have formed us for yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find rest in you.” Tríona Doherty

The Provocateur

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

WHY TREE HUGGING IS HERE TO STAY IF YOU look up the definition of tree hugger, you will see that it isn’t too flattering a description: the good people at Merriam Webster depict such a person as “someone who is regarded as foolish or annoying because of being too concerned about protecting trees, animals, and other parts of the natural world from pollution and other threats”. Well, The Provocateur thinks it’s long beyond time that the tables (or the branches that made those tables?) were turned. Any primary or even pre-school pupil will give us older generations a run for our money when it comes to educating us and opening our eyes to burning issues such as climate change and the environment. Just this week, eco-friendly youngsters in Killarney helped raise awareness of climate change. The pupils at St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen, invited Just Forests in to help raise awareness of how local actions can have global impacts, both negative and positive. Tom Roche of Just Forests said: “We delivered five workshops to around 100 students accompanied with their teachers.” “Our workshops supported the great wildlife garden and tree planting work being carried out in St Oliver’s as a means of increasing the biodiversity on the school grounds and combatting climate change.” Pupils and teachers at St Oliver's are much more aware of the local and global implications of illegal logging, biodiversity decline and climate change, added Tom. “They are also more empowered to act positively in helping to address the problems – in the case of St Oliver’s pupils, they will carry the messages learned in the workshops home to parents and family,” he said. “Our workshops also supported the work of St Oliver’s Green Schools team.” Schools wishing to book the Wood of Life exhibition and associated workshops can contact Tom Roche, coordinator of Just Forests, at info@justforests.org or visit the website at www.justforests.org

BACK TO WORK NOW, BOYS & GIRLS David Lloyd George once remarked that negotiating with De Valera was like trying to pick up mercury with a fork. De Valera is reputed to have replied, “Why doesn’t he use a spoon?” There’s always a way to resolve issues and compromise often means that two parties agree to do something they both agree is wrong. It’s farcical that water should be the bone of contention in the negotiations between FF & FG. It’ll only take common sense for both Fianna Fáil & Fine Gael to conclude that Irish Water must go. It was ill-conceived and stumbled from one blunder to another. People were shocked by the antics of Irish Water. Irish Water is beyond redemption. We will, of course have to pay for water but water charges will go on the one hand and stay on the other hand, albeit under a different name, if you get my drift. Water is a valuable but finite resource and expensive to manage efficiently. The infrastructure needed to supply clean water to every person in the country is massive – reservoirs, pumping, piping, filtration, manpower – none come cheap. Our taxation needs to be streamlined and made fit for purpose. There are too many taxes and people are angry because we don’t understand why there are so many. Scrap the property tax which is actually a disincentive to property ownership and water charges could easily be bundled with all the other services delivered to properties around the country. We need fewer taxes, not more. Let people see what they are paying for like every other utility coming into our homes. We pay for electricity, gas, telephones, internet, and television so how can we expect to get water for free? Abolish Irish Water; return the water service to the local authorities and let them manage it from here on. Then end this farce and get on with governing. While Micheál & Enda play silly games, Dublin resembles a war zone. Unarmed, under-resourced & underpaid Gardaí are up against well-armed and well-resourced criminals engaged in a murderous feud while the Minister for Justice spends her time arguing the toss with the FF negotiators. Likewise, the Minister for Agriculture is one of Fine Gael’s chief negotiators while the price of milk has fallen to by 14 cent a litre and the dairy sector is in crisis. How long does the minister expect dairy farmers to run at a loss? Does he really think that the next generation of farmers will milk cows for 20 cent per litre? Or that there will even be a next generation of farmers? And how can our Minister for Health justify being at these endless negotiations when the health service is in crisis? At a time when it takes almost a year for public patients to have some vital procedures done, why is he not at his post? It’s the same with the Minister for Transport. While he tries to get the better of Fianna Fáil, the LUAS service is in chaos. And Irish Rail, Bus Éireann and half the public service are queuing up to strike. Already ministers have missed important EU meetings to sustain these silly talks and they need to stop. It’s time for our leaders to assume their positions. It’s time to get back to work.

Estimated cost of blaze damage in Killarney stands at €10,000 THE Irish Wildlife Trust logged almost a dozen large wildfires last week, which included Killarney National Park, with most occurring in special areas of conservation. Firefighters did battle with a ring of fire on the side of Tomies Mountain in the Gap of Dunloe, in the western side of Killarney National Park last Wednesday. Kerry’s assistant chief fire officer Mike Flynn said the main fire seems to have begun around 568 metres up on Tomies Rock, to the rear of Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the Gap of Dunloe. The fire service in Kerry also fought huge blazes in Kilcummin on Thursday night, and in Waterville the previous night.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD GIVE YOUR DOG SPACE! Animal psychologists say dogs feel stressed and unhappy when they are embraced by their owners, because it stops them being able to run away. In a study which analysed 250 pictures of dogs as they were being hugged, eight out of 10 animals looked visibly uncomfortable. Experts at The Kennel Club, and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, also agreed that owners should not treat their dogs like children, because most pets did not like to be cuddled. The new study was carried out by Dr Stanley Coren, a canine expert and Professor of Psychology at the University of British Columbia. He analysed images of dogs being hugged by adults and children he found on the Internet, looking for signs of stress. At an extreme end, when a dog is especially anxious it bares its teeth or may bite, but Dr Coren said there are 'subtler indicators' that it may be uncomfortable. Signs of stress include the dog folding its ears down, half-moon eyes or turning its head away to avoid eye contact. If the dog has its eyes closed or is licking his lips it could also be a sign of anxiety. Yawning or raising one paw is another warning sign. Dr Coren found that in 81.6 per cent of the photographs the dogs had at least one sign of discomfort, stress, or anxiety. Only 7.6 per cent of the photographs showed comfortable dogs whilst the remaining 10.8 per cent were either neutral or ambiguous. “Dogs are technically cursorial animals, which is a term that indicates that they are designed for swift running,” said Dr Coren wrote in an article in Psychology Today. “That implies that in times of stress or threat the first line of defence that a dog uses is not his teeth, but rather his ability to run away. Behaviourists believe that depriving a dog of that course of action by immobilising him with a hug can increase his stress level and, if the dog's anxiety becomes significantly intense, he may bite. The clear recommendation to come out of this research is to save your hugs for your two-footed family members and lovers. It is clearly better from the dog's point of view if you express your fondness for your pet with a pat, a kind word, and maybe a treat'. The advice was also repeated by animal experts in Britain who recommend ‘calm stroking’ of pets instead of a cuddle. Claire Matthews, Senior Canine Behaviourist at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, says: “A hug might be a normal social greeting for humans but it isn’t for a dog. Subtle stress signals can be missed when you’re hugging your pet and this could lead to a negative reaction, so it’s about recognising when your dog is uncomfortable. Some people think that giving their dog a hug is a nice thing to do, but the reality is that a family pet will often tolerate a hug but doesn’t like it. When you hug a dog it usually show signs of stress because it invades their personal space – a person putting two arms around the neck of a dog can be interpreted as being intimidating and means that it can’t move away from the situation it is uncomfortable with.” Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary added: “Dogs are often considered part of the family, however they are not human and may therefore react differently to certain interactions such as hugging. “On the whole dogs are sociable animals and love interacting with people, but any action that restricts a dog’s movement could make them uncomfortable and it is important for an owner to recognise the signs of stress or anxiety.”

Deputy Michael Healy-Rae.

More details of minority Government needed, says Michael Healy-Rae SEVERAL Independent TDs have said they cannot agree to support a minority Government led by Fine Gael - until they know the details of a deal between them and Fianna Fáil. The latest reports suggest that Micheál Martin and Enda Kenny have decided on a compromise over Irish Water, suspending charges for nine months. They have also committed to setting up a commission to examine the future of the charging system. In the meantime Leinster House is attempting to tackle some regular business. Kerry Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae has said they cannot make progress until Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael reveal their plans: “In the absence of knowing what we would be agreeing to, there are an awful lot of complications involved in running a minority Government. “There are an awful lot of issues from health to environment to all of those other issues that we are concerned with,” said Deputy Healy-Rae. “Until we see the colour of what they are saying no one can give a clear answer.”

Melissa Reid to return to UK 'very soon' MELISSA REID is set to return to the UK "very soon" after Peruvian authorities agreed to expel her from the country, according to the British embassy in Peru. The 22-year-old, jailed for cocaine smuggling in 2013, has been seeking to serve the remainder of her six-year sentence closer to home in Scotland. Reid, from Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire, and Michaella McCollum, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, were sentenced in 2013 for six years and eight months after admitting trying to smuggle cocaine worth €1.93m from Peru to Spain.

‘Telling History Has Been A Moving And Humbling Journey’

Relatives of the late Patrick O'Connor who attended Patrick – The 1916 Story of Captain Patrick O’Connor at Rathmore Community Centre on Saturday night. PICTURE: EAMONN KEOGH

Brian Hickey who played the role of Patrick O'Connor in the The 1916 Story of Captain Patrick O’Connor at Rathmore Community Centre, with Fr Donal O'Connor and other cast members.

ALL roads have been leading to Rathmore in recent days as the curtain rose on the moving story of local man Patrick O’Connor. Patrick - The 1916 Story of Captain Patrick O'Connor is written and directed by Aidan O'Connor, Rathmore, and depicts the final weeks of Patrick’s life before he joined the GPO Garrison on Easter Monday, 1916. The show ran on Saturday and Sunday in Rathmore Community Centre at 8pm. Tickets were in such keen demand that extra nights (Monday and Tuesday) were added. Up to 20 of Patrick's relatives made the journey from Dublin and all over the country to see the performance. A total of 90 actors, singers, musicians and stage crew are involved in the top-class production. “Patrick lasted a week before being shot down in hail of machine gun fire on Moore Street on Friday, April 28,” said author and journalist Aidan O’Connor. “He, along with fellow Kerry men The O'Rahilly, Michael Mulvihill and Patrick Shortis died in the Moore Street charge that day.” Aidan added: “The dedication and hard work put in by so many people over the past few weeks is testament to the mark Patrick O'Connor has left behind. People are truly moved by his story and sacrifice. Telling history has been a moving and humbling journey.”

Home improvement with Killarney Credit Union

Helen Courtney Power, Killarney Credit Union.

WHETHER you are planning to replace your roof, build an extension or replace worn-out floors, talk to Killarney Credit Union today about home improvements. Killarney Credit Union has announced that it is offering members a lower home improvement loan rate of 8.3 % APR. It is also offering a free €50 voucher from MD O'Shea's for all new home improvement loans over €5,000 until the end of April. As the economy picks up and consumer spend confidence continues to improve, more of us will consider home improvements in 2016. The extension of the Government’s Home Renovation Incentive Scheme also provides some welcome tax relief for those planning expenditure on repair, renovation or improvement works this year. “The philosophy at Killarney Credit Union has always been to look at things differently,” said Helen Courtney Power, business development manager, Killarney Credit Union. “We understand the difference a home improvement loan can make to your life, increasing comfort and adding space, so we always look at your whole story to make sure you feel at home with the loan process. We only propose home improvement loans with realistic terms, which you can pay back in a way that works best for you. "We don’t charge administration fees or transaction charges and you

can pay back your home improvement loan early without penalty, if that becomes an option. "In your local credit union, you are not a customer, you are a valued member.” No matter what your home improvement loan is for – from a total revamp, to just a little redecorating, your credit union will ensure everything is clear, transparent and straightforward, added Helen. “So you can get on with creative and wonderful improvement ideas for your home, your way. Remember though that it is important to put in place a budget and know where your money is going before throwing your savings or borrowings at a project. If you’re thinking about turning your house into a home again, Killarney Credit Union can help - call in to us today at Beech Road, Park Road or Kenmare or log on to www.killarneycu.ie and try our loan calculator/ for more details. “The Irish property market is certainly showing signs of recovery and this in turn is giving people confidence to carry out home improvements that were maybe put off during the depths of the recession. Killarney Credit Union is delighted to be able to offer a home improvement loan product to its members at a very competitive 8% rate. "We would encourage members contemplating undertaking improvements in their home to contact us about finance.” For more information on the Home Renovation Incentive Scheme go to www.revenue.ie

Looks like a Range Rover! HERE’S something you don’t see everyday. It’s a Bowler EXR-S, which for the uninitiated, is a Range Rover Sportbased “all-terrain supercar” with a 5.0-litre V8 and 285mm of suspension travel. Yeah, it’s a serious bit of kit. Bowler a UK-based engineering firm made its name building Dakar-ready off-road racers like the Defender-based Wildcat. It built this EXR-S, the first of only three in right-hand drive, in 2015. Though fundamentally a road car, there are few things more extreme that legally wear a set of number plates. There’s an integrated FIA roll cage,

Chad Mcqueen Visits Killarney On Mustang Tour Of Ireland

a special ‘E Control’ rear differential with 50/50-split all-wheel drive and six-piston Brembos breaks. Its suspension comprises fully independent double wishbones front and rear, with bespoke Bilstein dampers and Eibach progressive springs. The body is composite, and the interior leather-lined, but both borrow heavily from the old Rangie, as you can see from the picture. Power stands at 550bhp, which allows for 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph. We suspect it will do that over literally any terrain.

FIRST we welcomed Top Gear duo Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc to Killarney and the following week Chad McQueen motored into town in his yellow Ford Mustang. Chad, the son of Steve McQueen, stayed overnight in the five-star Europe Hotel & Resort, during his Mustang Run around Ireland. The five-day tour in the all-new Ford Mustang, also took in Galway and Limerick. From Killarney, Chad travelled to Cork and finished the trip in Waterford. McQueen, who is a film actor, producer and racecar driver, embarked on the Mustang Run in conjunction with the Dermot and Dave Show on TodayFM to highlight the arrival of the new Mustang in Ireland, the first time that the iconic car nameplate is available in right hand drive. Commenting on his experience of driving more than 800km across Ireland, Chad said: “I loved every minute of it. What a great mix of roads you have in Ireland, going from world-class highways to more picturesque narrow, twisty roads that can be sometimes challenging. But the Mustang was so balanced and well behaved that it took everything in its stride. “My trip to Ireland was everything I hoped it would be. The people we met everywhere were so nice and friendly, the scenery was truly awesome – you have a lot to be proud of and I do hope to be back some day.” Chad was driving an eye-catching Mustang Fastback 5.0 litre V8 with 416PS in Triple Yellow.

All-New Ford Ecoblue Engine Is Diesel Game Changer – Cleaner, More Fuel Efficient, More Power, More Torque FORD revealed the first new Ford EcoBlue advanced diesel engine that will offer optimised fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 and NOX emissions* for customers, using sophisticated technologies and innovative design. Building on the industry-leading performance and technology of Ford’s award-winning EcoBoost petrol engines, Ford’s range of EcoBlue diesel engines will power the company’s future passenger cars and commercial vehicles with power outputs ranging from 100 PS to 240 PS. The four-cylinder 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue debuts in the new Transit and Transit Custom commercial vehicles, delivering an unrivalled package of fuel efficiency, performance and refinement. An all-new engine architecture delivers reduced friction and a clean-burning combustion system. Sophisticated after-treatment processes for exhaust gasses enable ultra-low emissions in line with stringent Euro Stage VI standards that will be introduced in September 2016, requiring a 55 per cent reduction in NOx emissions compared to Euro Stage V standards. Advanced technologies include an integrated intake system with Ford’s first application of mirror-image porting for optimised engine breathing; a low-inertia turbocharger featuring rocket engine materials designed for high temperature applications; and an all-new high-pressure fuel injection system that is more responsive, quieter and offers more precise fuel delivery. Developed by Ford engineering teams in the U.K. and Germany, the versatile all-new 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue engine initially will be offered with 105 PS, 130 PS and 170 PS in commercial vehicle applications. Capable of delivering more than 200 PS, the engine will later feature in Ford passenger cars alongside further new EcoBlue engines – including a 1.5‑litre variant. Advanced turbocharging The all-new compact turbocharger has been specifically designed to deliver more air at lower engine rpm compared with the outgoing 2.2-litre TDCi engine, for a light and urgent feel across the rev-range and up to 340 Nm of torque at 1,250 rpm.

Killarney Advertiser 29.04.16

The new engine will comfortably meet future European emissions requirements supported by Ford’s first standardised selective catalytic reduction system. The system is close-coupled to the rear of the engine for maximum efficiency and excellent cold-driving performance. A short-loop exhaust gas recirculation channel is incorporated into the cylinder head, contributing to a more compact engine design and helping optimise cooling of gasses. Enhanced refinement The 2.0-litre Ford EcoBlue engine will be the first diesel commercial vehicle powertrain from Ford to achieve passenger car noise, vibration and harshness criteria, contributing to enhanced driving appeal.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

‘We Have A Right To Cycle In The People’s Park’ FOURTEEN years ago I had occasion to write to The Kingdom newspaper when, out of the blue, and overnight, a sign appeared at the entrances to the National Park forbidding cycling. The day after publication the signs were removed, and I was informed that they had – ahem – been put up in error! For 48 years now I have been cycling the glorious Cherry Drive in April when the blossoms first appear. Imagine my surprise on Sunday last when I was met at the Golden Gates with a sign forbidding cycling down the driveway. On approaching the security personnel on duty, and enquiring who exactly decided on this rule, I was exhorted to ignore the sign, and cycle away to my heart’s delight.

This I did, and will continue to do so, despite this dictum. I felt I should assert what I feel is the people’s right to cycle in the People’s Park. Folks, If we accept this stricture lying down, God only knows what they’ll come up with next? Can you believe it, no kiddie scooters, no skateboards, no prams, no wheelchairs, no walking on the grass – oops, sorry, they have that there already! Seriously, folks, eternal vigilance is the only way to protect our rights from the dictates of faceless civil servants above in Dublin. Nicky Barry, An Dun, Woodlawn Park, Killarney

SUMMER SCHOOLS FOR PROSPECTIVE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The school holidays offer an excellent opportunity for doing your homework on third-level courses, reports career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan DURING the summer months some universities are holding summer schools for prospective students interested in studying at university. These summer schools are geared mainly towards fifth and transition year students who may be considering a particular course of study on completion of the Leaving Cert. These events are designed to give students an insight into life as a student of nursing, science, law or engineering, for example, as well as a chance to sample college life for a day. UCD, NUI Galway and Maynooth University are all offering similar style programmes based on the courses they each have to offer to undergraduate students. The UCD Summer School runs over four days from June 7 to the

10. A student can decide to attend one or more days depending on their preference on the topics being covered each day. The week begins with taster lectures, workshops and information on career opportunities in the areas of Architecture, Midwifery and Science on June 7 and covers different college departments during the week ending with an exploration of Business, History and Medicine on June 10. The cost is e35 per day including a sandwich lunch. NUI Galway is also offering a similar programme to UCD with summer schools in Computing/IT, Business, Engineering, Law and Nursing & Science. These are run on different dates from June 1 to July 1. While there is a cost of approx. e30 per day for some of these

events others such as Law and Nursing are free with a lunch included. The Maynooth University Summer School runs from June 13 to June 17 with a chance to experience their degrees in Primary Education, Media Studies, Economics and more during the week at a cost of e25 per day. Further information as well as details on how to book a place is available through the individual college websites. • You can contact Eithne Teahan by emailing info@careeroptionskerry.com or calling 0872028185

Killarney RFC

Minis End of Season: Our Killarney RFC Minis section finished up training for the season with a final training session and awards party at Aghadoe, last Saturday the 23rd of April. A glorious day in perfect conditions awaited everyone as all age groups gathered to play matches, eagerly watched by their families who came along to support them on the day. We had some fantastic rugby skills on display at all ages as the proud parents looked on. Following an hour of training and play, we proceeded to the presentation area where parents were on hand to give out food to all present. The parents brought an amazing array of baked goods including buns, rice crispie buns, crisps and so on and there was a veritable mountain of food for all to enjoy on the day. Thanks a million to all the parents for their generosity. Over 110 children received medals, while at each age group two players received an award for ‘Most Committed Player’ and ‘Player of the Year’. Mini Coordinator and U8 coach Liam Murphy kicked off proceedings by asking KRFC club chairman Junior Finnegan to say a few words to the gathering. Liam himself then proceeded to saa a few words of thanks with a special mention to Tom and Dora Campbell for all of their assistance over the season. Tom, our Minis coordinator for the past number of seasons moved this season to become Youths manager, but was always a great assistance when needed. A huge thanks was given to the fantastic Coaches who gave up their time each and every Saturday in all conditions to develop the rugby skills of each player in a fun environment. We had Mark Leslie and Ed Stack coaching at U7 with help from John O’Leary and Derek Dennehy, Ed Stack and Liam Mur-

phy coached the U8’s. Paul Murphy, Richard O’Brien, Ger Moynihan and Pat Chambers coached the U10’s while Ian Harrington, Chris Kerins and Alan Horgan trained the U12’s across the season. Liam also thanked Denise Treacy and Denis Corridan who have worked hard in setting up our girls section, a new departure for the club which is truly going from strength to strength. He thanked the parents for their unending support and the mountain of food that they brought to feed everyone today and the biggest thanks of all was saved for the children who came to learn and play rugby week in, week out. Given the weather this winter was so bad, this was no mean feat! Finally on behalf of the coaches, he thanked the coaches families for their support and help throughout the year. We then proceeded to hand out medals to each age group, where every child received their deserved and hard won medals with huge smiles after a busy season. Finally the big moment came where we awarded the following trophies to our deserving winners. U7 Most Committed Player: Lachlan Scannell U7 Player of the Year: Donncha Murphy U8 Most Committed Player: Ethan Whiteley U8 Player of the Year: Mark Brosnan U10 Most Committed Player: Ben O’Brien U10 Player of the Year: Darragh Stack U12 Most Committed Player: Harry Kelly U12 Player of the Year: Rian Colleran Well done to all the children and to the award winners. We then proceeded to make a presentation to two of our U12 players Josh Hewerdine and Sam Behal who were injured during the year - not at Rugby! They missed a lot of the season, however they turned up every week to help in any way they could and showed huge commitment to the club. Finally a presentation was also made to Tom Campbell in appreciation of his hard work and commitment to the Minis Section over the years. A great day was had by all and it was nice to sign off a season marred by brutal weather with a glorious day of sunshine at our home in Aghadoe. Thanks again to Minis Coordinator Liam Murphy for organising the day and the season to date. Trojan work went in to making sure we didn’t lose too many sessions during what was a bad winter weather wise. A Night at the Dogs: We are organizing a night at the dogs in Tralee, on Saturday the 23rd of July in order to raise much needed funds for the club. We have a wonderful facility at Aghadoe and need funds in order to kick on and develop the site further. Keep the date free and we will post details of the event on facebook and on www.krfc.club. If you can help in any way please let one of the committee members know. TAG TUESDAYS Tag Tuesdays are recommencing at Aghadoe from Tuesday, May 3.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett wishes to send out another reminder to all of the Gentlemen Golfers in our locality that his “Charity Day” will be held on Bank Holiday Sunday, the 1st of May next, Liam’s chosen Charities are the “make a wish Ireland” foundation is a well known children’s charity, and the “Rockmount Centre” is a respite care facility for those who are suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia in Kilgarvan, the time sheet is available at the front desk at the Club House, Liam says that as this is the only occasion during his year of Captaincy where he will go “cap in hand” on behalf of any worthy causes to the golfing fraternity, that he is hopeful of a full turn-out on the day. Liam wishes to commend a tremendous “rear-guard” effort by the Men’s Club’s team in the “Jimmy Carroll” tournament, this competition is for those who have attained “senior ages” and the first round of the local section was played on Killeen on Friday the 22nd of April, the outlook seemed to have been “done and dusted” in Killarney’s favour early on in the back nine but a most tenacious team, representing Kenmare Golf Club, brought the contest down to the very last green, and a heroic victory by Connie Healy and John Wall settled this very close encounter. The earlier results went as follows, Dermot Roche and Enda Curtayne lost on the 19th, Seamus O’Connor and Donie McSweeney won

6/5, Derry O’Connor and Padraig Griffin won 6/5, and John O’Shea and Eddie Coleman lost on the 17th green. This was the first occasion in which Club stalwarts, Dermot Roche and Enda Curtayne were beaten while representing the Club. The Arbutus Cup singles played on Killeen, 24th April. 1st Ronan Brosnan (9) 41 points, 2nd Damien Hickey (12) 41 points, 3rd Luke Walsh (7) 40 points, 4th Matthew Leacy (5) 39 points, 5th John O’Donoghue (10) 39 points, Best Gross, Stephen Kelliher (3) with a 74, Category 2 Pat Chawke (9) 38 points, Category 3 Ewan McIndoe 39 points, Category 4 Andrew Garnett (19) 33 points. The results speak for themselves and it is clearly evident that our Killeen course favours both our youth and our low to middle handicapper’s, but it proves that it is a great test of Golf. Now that the newly configurated greenside area of the 8th hole will be back in play, it will bring a new definition to that hole, and it could very well become the new “signature” hole of Killeen course. Presentation to recent prize-winners and Club information evening, Friday 29th April. The next evening to incorporate both of the above will be on Friday the 29th of April, Club Secretary Manager Cormac Flannery will give an update on all aspects of our Club, commencing at 6.00pm and the Presentation of prizes will follow at 7.00pm approx. the Club has recently been presented with an “original” poster from 1940 by Killarney Printing Works Ltd. this historic poster is advertising the very first “Open Week” just 5 months after we had opened the course at Mahony’s Point, and it is a fascinating piece of memorabilia for us to proudly display in the Clubhouse, The poster was restored by Paul Curtis of “Mucros Conservation Bookbinding” who has been based at Muckross House for many years, and it has been framed by John Cleary of the “Quality Framing company”. Club Captain Liam Hartnett, wishes to pass on his sincere condolences to the family of the late Frank Twiss of Callinafercy Milltown, on his recent death, and to his sons Derek and Ian who are both Club members.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

The Inland Fisheries Ireland District Committee meeting was held recently in Macroom and was attended by two club members who sit on the panel. With regard to the Laune catchment and the Salmon Stocks running in same, the allowable catch was defined as a total of 4537 fish less 5% which resulted in 4310 fish being identified as surplus and open to pursuit by both licence holding rod and nets men. The breakdown of the allocation was approx 70% of this identified total being allocated for harvesting by nets men and the remaining approx 30% being allocated to rod and line. Given that the total Angling Licence fee funding , including the conservation levy, contributed by nets men is equivalent to 1% of the total funding, as per IFI Chief Executive Officer , with rods men making up the remaining balance of 99% of funding - viewing the allocation of the Laune catchment does not reflect this in any shape or form, given the overwhelming allotment of catch to nets men. Also when, in light of the allocation for 2016, one considers the IFI Business Development Manager stating away back in 2011 that the value of each rod caught salmon was E436 to the Irish economy, building in even a conservatively small index for inflation on this figure, the local Kerry economy would be all the better if the allocation of catch to rod and line was to reflect the potential for the local economy.

Training News Training continues as usual for all our underage and adults as per coaches texts. Beginners rowing, U14 and U15 takes place at Reen Pier, Ross Castle every Saturday at 10am. For further information regarding Beginners Rowing you can call Mary Burns on 086 8098182. Schools Regatta The Schools Regatta took place at O’Brien’s Bridge Limerick , last Sunday 24th April. Over 70 schools took part from the four provinces of Ireland, from J14 age group right up to U23. Athletes from Workmens Rowing Club joined forces with those from other clubs to represent their Secondary Schools: St Brigid’s, St. Brendan’s, and the Community College, Killarney, and Presentation Secondary School, Milltown. We, at Workmens were extremely proud of everyone’s races. Some results of note were the St Brigid’s ‘A’ Crew of Ciara Moynihan, Annie O’Donoghue, Leona and Ciara Browne who coasted home to take first place in the Womens J16 quad Final. Ciara Moynihan continued to impress when she came 3rd in the Women’s J16 final in the afternoon. Well done for St. Brigid’s girls! Also, huge congratulations to Mark Woodard on his first regatta!! What a day for Mark as he and his fellow St. Brendan’s crew member Seán Farndon clocked up a commanding first place in their Men’s J15 double final. Seán was indeed still in top form later that day when he came an impressive 2nd in his final of the men’s J15 single race. Another great performance for the Sem!! The older ‘boys’ didn’t fail to impress either, with Dylan Bartlett and Mikey O’Donoghue rowing for Killarney Community College and in their Men’s U23 double sprinting home a close second to Castleknock College in their final.

killarney notes Dylan and Mikey also teamed up for a sporting team with two Muckross boys and had a great row in their U23 quad heat, just missing out on the final. Presentation Miltown was represented by Ruadhán Mac Curtáin who just missed the final by coming a very close second in his heat of the J16 single scull, and joining forces with a Killorglin rower to compete in the U23 double scull and coming 3rd in their heat. A long enjoyable day was had by all and of course many thanks to our coaches for facilitating this event for all our rowers and their schools, and to the schools themselves for entering our rowers in the Schools Regatta. Upcoming Events The month of May will bring more events to our Rowing Calendar, with Lee Regatta being held on May 14th at the Marina in Cork, over a 500m distance, and Castleconnell Regatta on 21st May, again over a fast 500m distance. It’ll be back to the 2km races then in June with the Cork Regatta at the National Rowing Centre, Iniscarra on 25th and 26th of that month. Boys in green power to glory THEIR nifty moves on the pitch ensured the young sports stars at Presentation Monastery National School, Killarney, won the FAI five-a-side soccer county final. The talented team produced some impressive performances to overcome stiff competition from the other schools in their group such as Tralee CBS, St Oliver’s and St John’s, Kenmare. They progressed as the Kerry representatives in the Munster competition last week when they travelled to Waterford to take on the other county champions. “The standard was significantly higher this time out and the boys did really well to progress to the semi-finals where they lost out to a strong Tipperary side,” said school principal Colm O Súilleabháin. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Kerry go under to Dublin in Allianz Football League Final KERRY had to give best to Dublin once again following what in the end turned out to be a comprehensive eleven point defeat (2-18 to 0-13) in the Allianz Football League final at Croke Park before 81,000 people on Sunday last. Kerry seemed to be chasing the game for long periods but still just two points separated the sides at the interval after what was a satisfactory enough shift by the Kerry men during that first period. The second half was progressing along similar lines until twenty minutes from time when Kerry were reduced to fourteen men following the dismissal of Aidan O’Mahony. Dublin then began to twist the screw and given their numerical disadvantage, there was little Kerry could do to stem the tide and so the Metropolitans continue to have the Indian sign over Kerry in Croke Park. The two extra games in the league are bound to stand to Kerry in the long run however and maybe it is better to learn some harsh lessons in the league rather than in a knockout championship situation. It will be interesting to see how Kerry regroup following this setback and certainly the game has given the Kerry management a lot to work on before they cross swords with the winners of the Limerick/Clare quarter final in the Munster semi final in Fitzgerald Stadium on the weekend of June 12. In the interim there are four weeks of Club Championships and the first two rounds of the senior football championship. Kerry will also take in a few days of warm weather training in Portugal before they return refreshed for another assault on the Munster and All Ireland Championships.

Castleisland Mart Club Championships

There is another big weekend of Castleisland Mart Club Championship activity this coming weekend with games in the senior, Junior Premier and Junior competitions. Senior Club Championship – There are

Currow Coiste Na nÓg

U16s: Our u16 team played a back game on Thursday 21st April in the East Kerry League where Kilcummin were the opposition, it was a good sporting contest, Currow led at the break on a score line of Currow 2-04 to Kilcummin’s 0-7, but in the 2nd half Kilcummin upped their game and went on to win on a scoreline of Kilcummin 4-19 to Currow 6-08. Next game is vs Keel/Listry on Monday 25th April in Listry. U14s: We played two games this week in the county league. On Wednesday 20th Listowel Emmet’s were our opponents, Currow proved to be too strong and were comprehensive winners on the day. Following this win we welcomed Knock/Brosna on Friday 22nd in a back game, despite both teams missing key players Currow were to prove strongest in the contest and went on to win on a scoreline of Currow 3-11 to Knock/ Brosna 1-07. Scorers for Currow were

two interesting semi finals down for decision on this Saturday evening. Dr Crokes and Legion face off in a big local derby in Kilcummin and local bragging rights will once again be up for grabs. Dr Crokes are certainly enjoying a rich vein of form this year under Pat O’Shea while their opponents are struggling a bit though their victory over Kerins O’Rahillys in Round 1 will certainly have done their confidence a lot of good. The meeting of Austin Stacks and Dingle in the other semi final in Annascaul will be no less interesting. A lot of the focus will be on the two Dingle Geaney cousins, Mikey and Paul to see how their fitness levels are coming along and no doubt Austin Stacks will be attempting to sharpen up for the County Championship two weeks later. Both semi finals have a throw in time of 6:30 with extra time if required. The relegation Playoffs Round 1 are bound to be well worth a visit. Kilcummin and Rathmore will meet in Lewis Road while Kerins O’Rahillys and Milltown-Castlemaine cross swords in FarJason Brennan 2-0, Josh McCarthy 1-1, Connie O’Connor 0-4, Justin McCarthy 0-3, Jack Moriarty 0-2, Adam Jensen and Jason Brosnan 0-1 each. Next game is away to John Mitchel’s on Wednesday 27th April at 7pm. U12s: played Spa on Wednesday last in a County League back game in Spa, in a good game Currow proved too strong for their counterparts winning on a scoreline of Spa 0-10 to Currow’s 5-12. Next fixture is Vs Rathmore on Sunday 1st May at 6pm in Currow. U6, U8, U10s: Training continues this coming Saturday at 10am in Currow GAA ground. Also well done to the u12 team who played at half time in Croke park during the National League final, this was a great experience for them playing in GAA headquarters.

Dr Crokes

Juvenile Football Under 12 Footballers The Under 12 teams hosted Kilcummin in two cracking end-to-end games last

ranfore with both games having a 2:30 throw-in on Sunday. These games have added significance of course given that the losers of these two games will play in the relegation playoff Round 2. One of these four teams will be relegated to Intermediate status in 2017 and that team will be the loser of the Club Championship relegation playoff Round 2 game – unless of course that they reach the County senior championship final. Any team reaching the county senior football championship final will automatically be exempt from relegation. Intermediate Club Championship – Desmonds are in the Intermediate semi finals following their narrow one point victory over neighbours Currow last weekend but they will have to wait some time to see who joins them in the semi final draw. Spa and Kenmare meet on this Saturday in a repeat of the epic draw and replay (plus extra time in both games) between the sides last season while St Michaels-Foilmore entertain high Thursday evening. The Black team were very unlucky to lose by two points, 4-12 to 5-11. The Amber team continued their winning ways with a 5-19 to 5-09 victory. The next fixture is on Sunday 1st May at 6pm – Both teams (Away) v Austin Stacks. Under 14 In a tight game played in Lewis Road, the Black team lost out to Legion by a goal, 2-06 to 0-15. The Amber team recorded an impressive 4-11 to 2-03 win over Ballymac at home. The next fixture is Wednesday 27th of April at 7pm. The Amber (Away) v An Ghaeltacht and Black (Home) v Beaufort B. Under 16 There was no joy for the Amber team in the East Kerry League as it was Kenmare Shamrocks who took the two points from the clash in Lewis Road. The final score was 8-08 to 3-07. Happy Birthday We wish our Club Patron Donie Sheehan a Happy 90th Birthday. Congratulations Congratulations to Tommy Fleming

flying Templenoe on Sunday. Ardfert, conquerors of All-Ireland titleholders St Marys in Round 1 face An Ghaeltacht but due to Ardfert players’ involvement with Kerry hurlers and St Brendan’s in the senior football championship, that game goes out to May 28th. The semi final draw has not taken place as a result.

Premier Junior Club Championship

The winners of this competition will of course represent Kerry in the Munster Junior Club competition and the first drawn game of the club championship was in Listowel last weekend when Emmets and Beaufort could not be separated, even after extra time. The replay takes place on this Saturday evening in Beaufort at 6.30pm with extra time again obligatory. Annascaul are home to Renard on this Saturday in a Round 1 game while the St Pats V Glenbeigh-Glencar first round game will be played on Sunday week due to hurling commitments of one of the St Pats players.

and Eileen O’Sullivan who are great Dr Crokes supporters who recently got married. All the best for the future.

East Kerry

East Kerry Senior League Glenflesk travelled to Rathbeg on Saturday night for a round 2 back game in the East Kerry Senior League. Spectators were treated to an entertaining game. Rathmore built an early lead, with a goal in the opening minutes followed by a scatter of points. Glenflesk came into the game and reduced the margin to tow points at the break - Rathmore 1-6 Glenflesk 0-7. The sides were level three times in the second half but the home side pulled ahead in the closing ten minutes to run out winners on a final score of Rathmore 3-15 Glenflesk 1-12 East Kerry Junior League The East Kerry Junior League is nearing half way with round 4 fixed for this week. Dr Crokes and Legion both have an unbeaten record in the East Kerry Junior League so far. Dr Crokes

Legion are close behind, having also won their 2 games played to date and Rathmore have won one of their 2 games played to date, while Rathmore and Gneeveguilla are both on 2 league points with 2 games played, the latter winning their back game against Kilcummin on Saturday night. The final round of Division 5 was played on Monday night. The team that tops the league table in Division 5 will have a home venue for final. The Division 5 semi Final will be between the second and third placed teams in the League table. Hurling On Thursday April 14th in IT Tralee, the first year hurlers of Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore took part in a 9 a side blitz along with teams from CBS (The Green) Tralee, Mercy Mounthawk Tralee and Gaelcholaiste Chiarraí Tralee. There was some great skill shown on show from all players and some expertly taken scores were produced by both sides. A big ‘thank you’ is due to the teachers and mentors who brought the players to this blitz and for all their hard work in keeping hurling going strong in these post primary schools. These schools will meet again on the week of the 16th of May, with the definite time, date and location to be confirmed closer to the date. Reminder Mandatory Meeting for Referees A reminder that there is a mandatory seminar for all referees who referee Juvenile games, and at Fossa GAA club on Thursday night, 28th April, starting at 9pm. Well done and much credit to the team and especially to their coach Danny Doherty for his dedication and effort over the past few months. Kilcummin

CONGRATULATIONS & BEST WISHES To all the boys & girls who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday 19th April. COMMUNITY GAMES Sunny Kilbrean Park, Mastergeeha was the venue on Sunday morning for the County finals of the U12 soccer competition. In a close opening encounter, Kilcummin lost out to competition winners Fossa but we were soon into our stride with a good 1-0 win over Ballyduff with young Ryan McGurl scoring the winner with a fantastic strike. Killorglin proved too strong in our third game, again going down to a single goal, scored from the penalty spot. However, Kilcummin finished on a high note with a 6-0 victory over Ballyheigue thanks to goals from Mark O’Shea (4) and Keelan O’Shea (2). These results ensured third place and County bronze medals for our very young team, well done to you all and to mentors Dara O’Leary, Sarah Nagle and Mike O’Sullivan. Many thanks to all in Kilbrean Park for your organisation and hospitality which was first-class as ever. SWIMMING Best of luck to all our swimming competitors who head to the Sports Complex in Tralee on Sunday next for the County finals. GOLF CLASSIC GAA Golf Classic takes place on this Saturday in O’Mahony’s Point, Killarney

Dr. Crokes V Legion in Kilcummin this Saturday at 6.30pm. U14 COUNTY LEAGUE Our Kilcummin U14 boys have made quite a satisfactory start to their Division 2B County League campaign. An excellent performance at home in our opening game saw Kilcummin record a 6-7 to 4-7 victory over a fine Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane team. Beaufort was the venue for our second game and despite trailing by 7 points at half time a much-improved second half display saw Kilcummin emerge winners on a 7-12 to 6-8 score-line. However, Kenmare and Na Gaeil proved far too strong for Kilcummin in our next two games, both away from home against opposition who have already qualified for the Division 2 semi-finals. Kilcummin are at home to St Marys, Caherciveen this week with a place in next week’s Division 3 semi-finals at stake in what is a most important fixture. More importantly, this panel of 28 players have shown excellent dedication to training and have improved enormously since the campaign started. All players have enjoyed game time in the County league and it is important that the good work continues with Feile now only 8 weeks away. CUMANN NA MBUNSCOIL Dr Crokes pitch on Lewis Road was the venue on Tuesday last for the East Kerry Cumann na mBunscoil 7-a-side competition with all three National Schools in the Parish competing.
