Terence Takes The Helm Of Kerry Branch Of Irish Hotels Federation KILLARNEY hotel manager Terence Mulcahy is the new president of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation. Originally from Brosna in North Kerry, Terence is married to well-known Killarney physiotherapist Ailish Mulcahy. Ailish and the couple’s children, Darren and Laura, were among those congratulating Terence when he accepted the chain of office from outgoing president Cormac O’Sullivan at the weekend. Terence, from Ross Road, has worked at the International Hotel for the past 22 years, managing it for the last 17. He succeeds Cormac O’Sullivan of Benners Hotel in Dingle and is joined by new Kerry IHF vice-president Brian Bowler, general manager of The Brehon Hotel. Terence takes the helm as the county and country look forward to another buoyant tourism season. The latest Fáilte Ireland “tourism barometer” shows growth across most sectors, with almost three-quarters of tourism businesses noting business to have increased in the first quarter of 2016. Looking ahead, the industry as a whole is very optimistic about 2016. The Wild Atlantic Way initiative in particular continues to attract praise from operators along the Atlantic coast. Fáilte Ireland takes the performance and future outlook ratings recorded by tourism businesses in each Barometer to establish its regular Tourism Business Sentiment Index.

Cyclists To Saddle Up In In Memory Of Ed TAKING place tomorrow, the 3 Climbs Cycle will be dedicated to the memory of popular Firies man Ed Duggan, who tragically lost his life while out cycling last year. Ed, who was a member of Killarney Cycling Club, was an avid cyclist. He worked as a nurse in St Mary’s of the Angels in Beaufort for children with special needs and in honour of Ed, all proceeds from the 3 Climbs Cycle will go towards this very deserving cause. Ed’s partner Siobhan Dwyer, his good friends Mark Williams and Ruairi Condon, and Mike Kissane who was with Ed when the accident occurred, along with other members of the club, have all rolled in behind the 3 Climbs. His mother Helen and brothers Peter and Christopher send their support to everyone taking part in honouring and remembering Edward. “Ed was an extraordinary young man with such a gentle and caring nature. His easygoing personality, humour and ease added to the treasure and privilege it was to have shared his company. His light is so dearly missed but will never be forgotten,” stated Siobhan and his friends. The committee of the cycle, overseen by organiser Maurice Brosnan, have asked Killarney Gardaí to get involved in the cycle in an effort to highlight the dangers on our roads for cyclists and to ask all road users to remember to slow down a little on the roads. Maurice says that it is important to highlight that cyclists and motorists must respect each other and the rules of the road. “One life lost on our roads is too much,” said Maurice. "There is always a family left behind grieving their loved ones after traffic accidents. We must all try and remember this, be more careful, obey the rules of the road and always put safety first.” The cycle takes place tomorrow, Saturday, May 7, and there are three routes to suit all levels of cyclists. The starting point and registration is at St Brendan’s College, Killarney. Register before online or on the morning from 7.30am to 8.50am, cycle is at 9am sharp. Question What are the changes to the grant for respite care this year? How do I apply for the grant? Answer The name of the Respite Care Grant was changed in 2016 and it is now called the Carer's Support Grant. The grant is an annual payment made to carers by the Department of Social Protection. Carers can use the grant in whatever way they wish. You can use the grant to pay for respite care if you wish, but you do not have to do so. In 2016 the grant will be €1,700 (increased from €1,300). You do not qualify if you are working more than 15 hours a week outside the home, if you are taking part in an education or training course for more than 15 hours a week, if you are getting a jobseeker's payment or if you are signing on for jobseeker credits. You also do not qualify if you are living in a hospital, convalescent home or similar institution. If you are caring for more than one person, a grant is paid for each of them. In June of each year (usually on the first Thursday of the month), the Department of Social Protection pays the grant automatically to carers getting Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit, Domiciliary Care Allowance or Prescribed Relative's Allowance. If you are not getting one of these payments and you did not get the grant last year, you should fill in an application form. You can apply for this year’s grant from 7 April 2016 (8 weeks before the grant is payable). If you got the grant last year you do not need to reapply. You will get a letter at the end of April from the Carer's Support Grant section in the Department of Social Protection with a short questionnaire. You must answer the questions on the back and return the letter to the Carer's Support Grant section. A freepost envelope will be included with your letter. After you return the letter, the Department will use this and the information on file to reassess you for the Carer's Support Grant. You can apply for a Carer's Support Grant for any given year until 31 December of the following year. So, for example, you can apply for a grant for 2015 up until 31 December 2016. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Daniel’s DeLorean Will Whisk You Back In Time ENTERPRISING and creative Killarney teen Daniel O’Sullivan could give the famous Doc Brown from the Back to the Future movies a run for his money. Daniel, who is in second year in St Brendan’s College, has created a computer device that shares a name with the famous DeLorean time machine in the film franchise. Daniel’s ingenious DeLorean allows the user to play video games from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s using a wireless PS3 controller connected over Bluetooth. “Alongside the video game features, my device also allows for the viewing of TV shows and movies (similar to Netflix) and the viewing of live TV channels,” said Daniel, who is from Minish. “The device can be plugged into any TV with a HDMI port and the operating system is user friendly. For the TV and movie section of the device to run smoothly a relatively decent broadband connection is required, the games however do not require a Wi-Fi connection.” The talented student created the DeLorean as part of a SciFest project. “My device will soon be available (some time during the summer hopefully) for purchase at a price of €120,” he said. “Since I am marketing the device as both a TV box and a video game console, the controller will be sold separately for a price of approximately €45€50. Games will be available for €5 each, however discounts may be available later (buy five, get two free).” Innovative Daniel got the idea for the project because he didn’t want to buy new video game consoles at the €400 price point. “The idea stemmed from my thoughts about how people enjoy 'classic' movies, music and books and why I couldn’t do the same for video games. I initially created the device thinking I might be able to get four or five systems working, but at the moment I've got over 35 systems from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s playing games such as the original Super Mario Bros and Sonic the Hedgehog,” he said.

INMO To Seek Restoration Of All Pay Cuts

Killarney To Host Chief Fire Officers’ Annual Conference

THE restoration of all pay cuts was one of the topics on the agenda at the 97th annual conference of the Irish Nurses & Midwives Organization (INMO) in Killarney this week. Over 350 delegates arrived for the event, which opened on Wednesday and concludes today. Some 70 motions were up for debate, including the critical shortage of nursing staff. This was one of the main issues on the agenda at the national event, which is taking place in the Killarney Convention Centre at The Gleneagle and has as its theme is Registered Nurses & Midwives Making the difference – Professionals in Action. The conference previously took place in Killarney four years ago, when Kerry delegate and Killarney native Sheila Dickson was INMO president.

THE Kerry Fire and Rescue Service hosted the 2016 Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) Conference at The Malton Hotel, Killarney, on Wednesday and Thursday. The annual showcase event for Ireland’s Fire Services sector hosted expert speakers from the emergency services sector, academia, government, local government and the fire technology industry from Ireland and overseas. Topics covered during the two-day event included decision-making by Fire Service incident commanders, stress management and operational discretion for Fire Service leaders. Conference speakers included Mr Sean Hogan, national director for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM), Brian Sweeney, international advisor to the board of the NDFEM, Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, London Fire Brigade and Prof Hugh McCauley of Trinity College Dublin. Conference secretary and chief fire officer for Kerry Michael Hession said: “We welcome several speakers of the highest calibre, both Irish and International, who bring a very rich heritage of service and leading academic views on the interesting topics we will address.” A unique aspect to the conference this year was the focus on the rich Irish heritage in fire services in the United States and further afield, added Mr Hession. “We are very pleased to welcome chiefs from the state of Massachusetts who with their families represent the wonderful contribution of the Irish over generations,” he said. The CFOA comprises the chief fire officers of all fire authorities in Ireland.

Kilcummin Performers Raise The Roof EIGHT pals that joined forces through their love of music have been hitting all the right notes of late. Fuaimeanna Shliabh Luachra, which translates as Sounds of Sliabh Luachra, is a group of friends that came together with an interest in traditional music and singing. The talented performers scooped second prize at the Siansa Gael Linn 2016 final in April, raising the roof of the National Concert Hall before a 1,000-strong audience on Sunday, April 17. This week, television viewers got to see them in action on TG4 on Monday. The group was chosen as one of the eight finalists from an initial entry of 50 groups in November last – a fantastic achievement as it was their first time to have participated in this prestigious competition Fuaimeanna Shliabh Luachra is mentored by Mary O’Connor. Four of the group are from Kilcummin (Niamh McSweeney, Aisling O'Connor, Dean Griffin and Steven O'Leary), two of the group are from Fossa (Seán Kelliher and Cian O'Sullivan), and two are from Currow (Eimear Horgan and Thomas Barrett). “It was a very satisfying result for the group who had to combine rehearsals with their study and particularly as three members are due to sit their Leaving Cert in a few weeks’ time,” said Mary. “Tributes must go to their trainers Conor Moriarty who arranged the music, and Roisin Ryan and Cathal Flood who also mentored the group. The group is also grateful for the support of their parents. Well done to Fuaimeanna Shliabh Luachra.” The adjudicators included renowned traditional musician and Killarney native Niamh Ní Charra. First prize went to the group ‘Círéib’ from Dublin, with ‘Gluaiseacht’ from West Cork coming in third place. Fuaimeanna Shliabh Luachra in action in the National Concert Hall.

At a special event hosted in the Killarney Park Hotel by Cork Airport last Thursday, the range of destinations from the airport was highlighted. It was also a chance to identify the opportunities for local tourism in the county resulting from significant inbound passenger growth. 2016 has already seen a number of new routes for Cork Airport as well as increased capacity across some of the most popular routes used by people from Kerry and other Munster counties. This has already resulted in an increase of 10.5% in passenger numbers at Cork Airport, which will welcome at least nine new routes this year, with a further three in the near future, from key tourism markets Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain and the US. New routes include Düsseldorf with Aer Lingus, London City, Nantes and La Rochelle with CityJet, Madrid with Iberia Express, Cardiff with Flybe, Southampton and Leeds Bradford with Aer Lingus Regional as well as Menorca with Lee Travel and Stein Travel. Management at the airport also warmly welcomed the news that the US Department of Transportation said that it “tentatively” finds that Norwegian Air International “should be issued the foreign air carrier permit”. This paves the way for the first transatlantic service from Cork to Boston. The airline has also committed to launching a Cork-Barcelona service and as well as New York service soon after. For anyone from Kerry looking to fly to the UK, Cork Airport has 14 destinations available including London City Airport. Sun seekers from the South West have a choice of 11 destinations in Spain, including firm favourites of Canary Islands, Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona. France is also very well served from Cork Airport. Kevin Cullinane, head of communications at Cork Airport, said: “Thousands of passengers from Kerry use Cork Airport each year for their travel needs, which is in easy reach of anywhere in the county.”

Improved hearing enhances quality of life in moderate dementia The quality of life is improved in impaired listeners diagnosed with moderate dementia by treating hearing loss with hearing aids, reports Charles Lewis, Chief Audiologist, Audiology Medical Services, Tralee

EARLY findings in a new study suggest that the quality of life is improved in impaired listeners diagnosed with moderate dementia by treating hearing loss with hearing aids, as well as the quality of life of the caregiver The study by the University of North Texas and Unitron, a global manufacturer of advanced hearing solutions, is being conducted by Amyn M. Amlani, PhD, Associate Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of North Texas, in partnership with Brian Taylor, Au.D., Director of Practice Development and Clinical Affairs at Unitron.

Improvement In Cognitive Ability Using Hearing Aids The researchers have already been able to show some improvement in cognitive ability among participants using hearing aids. This is certainly suggestive that there may be new therapeutic potential for hearing aids in cases of dementia. If the early results are found to be conclusive, the findings could enhance the role of hearing healthcare professionals in the rehabilitation of patients diagnosed with cognitive decline in relation to his or her hearing. Dr Amlani said: "This study looks at whether improved hearing can improve cognitive functioning for people who have already been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, In particular, we want to understand whether better hearing can play a role in helping people with dementia lead more active and engaged lives, particularly if hearing loss is identified and treated early." Untreated hearing loss and dementia Previous studies have found that people with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time in comparison to those with normal hearing. There are currently many studies ongoing in relation to hearing loss and neurodegenerative disease, but no data yet exists showing that the effects of dementia can actually be lessened through the use of hearing aids. Brian Taylor said: "Given the expected sharp increase in dementia cases over the next few decades, our findings could have significant implications for aging individuals as they begin experiencing hearing loss, Unitron is focused on providing solutions for healthcare providers so they can better serve their patients, and get them the treatment they need." I HAVE mentioned before in this article the problems that many producers of craft beers have in establishing their name beyond their own locality. For instance who really wants to drink Killarney beer in Galway and vice versa? In some ways the association with a town may even be detrimental. A bad product may taint others from the same town. Sometimes establishing your brand on its own merits is the

best way to go providing the quality is there, of course. Take for example Torc Brewing which you are now starting to see countrywide. Torc is not really known as a Killarney beer but rather a top-quality beer that happens to be made in Killarney. In the same way Dingle distillery has transcended its place of origin by virtue of its quality. We sell more Dingle Gin and Vodka to people from Dublin than we do

"At the touch of love everyone becomes a poet" - Plato

Ringbearer Mossie gives paws for thought BY EVE KELLIHER THE groom’s pet pooch Mossie enjoyed the limelight when he was required to be ringbearer at the nuptials of Róisín O'Sullivan and Ronan Flynn. Róisín, from Dunloe Upper, Beaufort, and Ronan, from Demesne, Killarney, were wed in a Humanist ceremony in the Killarney Oaks Hotel led by celebrant Seamus De Burca. “Mossie played a part in us getting together – Ronan used him to get my attention!” said Róisín. After the newlyweds, their bridal party and, of course, Mossie, posed for the camera of Ian Cronin, at scenic spots including Ross Castle, they re-joined the guests at the Killarney Oaks for the reception. Helping them celebrate were the groom’s parents Maisie and James Flynn and grandmother Kitty Flynn. Very much in their thoughts on the big day were the bride’s parents, the late Dan and Chrissie O'Sullivan. Róisín’s sister Aisling O’Sullivan was Róisín O'Sullivan and Ronan Flynn with Mossie. Róisín and Ronan first met in McSorley’s Bar on a night out in July 2013 and got engaged in Prague in November 2015. The bride’s nephew and godchild Daniel O’Sullivan, aged four, won standing ovations when he performed a rap song with the band. Róisín looked stunning in a Lillian West dress, while the groom and his party were dapper in suits by Formally Yours. The bride’s aunt, Bridie Flaherty, took care of the floral arrangements. The newlyweds, who will reside in Mastergeeha, Kilcummin, will honeymoon at a later date.

Dromhall and Randles hotels are a dream come true for your wedding

C

AN you think of a more perfect place to hold your wedding celebrations than at a historic hotel set in beautiful surroundings? The Dromhall Hotel was originally a hunting lodge, used in times past by the aristocracy visiting the lakes and mountains; over 50 years ago, it was purchased by the Randles family and metamorphosed into the supremely elegant venue it is today. The Randles family still run The Dromhall Hotel and thus you are sure of not only gracious surroundings and superb service but also that personal touch which comes from family involvement. It has always been the Randles’ family mission to give every single visitor the individual attention that the hosts of a stately home would always offer to their guests, from fine dining to luxurious bedrooms, and always with a warmly smiling welcome. The stunning banqueting suite, now completely renovated, has earned The Dromhall Hotel a place in Ireland’s top 100 wedding venues, as well as receiving more nominations than any other wedding location by brides of Real Weddings. Both The Dromhall Hotel and its sister hotel the Randles Hotel are fully registered to provide civil ceremonies. Their location is ideal too, of course: easy access, plenty of parking, and offering wonderful opportunities for memorable wedding pictures, not only outdoors but within the hotel itself (just check out the splendid staircase and imagine yourself standing there with the cameras flashing!).

The Dromhall Hotel and Randles Hotel are the perfect choice for your big day.

Advice on choosing your wedding venue

Y

OUR wedding venue is one of the most important aspects of your big day, with some couples even planning their entire nuptials around a specific venue. The first thing to take into account when choosing a wedding location is that there are likely to be two parts of your wedding to organise – the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. As regards the ceremony, a church wedding is still the favourite choice for many couples, and most have a particular church in mind. In this case, the reception must be planned around the ceremony location. Factors such as ease of transport from service to reception will be important when planning your church wedding. Brides and grooms keen to exchange vows in a civil wedding have the option of choosing a venue that will host both the wedding ceremony and reception. The type of wedding you have will depend partly on how big it will be, so consider the venue capacity.

Why Kelly Ann is The Brehon’s fairy godmother

S

O GOOD is The Brehon’s wedding co-ordinator, Kelly Ann O’Connor, at making dreams come true, her colleagues have nicknamed her “the fairy godmother”. Kelly Ann joined the team at The Brehon in 2014, having previously worked as a wedding planner in Las Vegas, Chicago, Limerick and Dublin. “I have worked on every type of wedding imaginable, from elaborate, lavish weddings with limitless budgets to intimate family gatherings where simplicity was key,” said Kelly Ann. “Every wedding I have ever worked on has had one common theme and that is making sure the wedding guests have fun. The advice I give to couples is be sure to create a memorable evening for both themselves and their guests.” As for her attention to detail, it is second to none. “The team here call me the fairy godmother because I ask our couples to tell me their every expectation and dream for their wedding day,” said Kelly Ann. “My job is to make these dreams be-

come a reality. Everyone has their own unique ideas, and in my experience it is often these ideas that make a wedding truly great.” Kelly Ann loves everything to do with weddings and even on her downtime she is always looking for inspiration and new ideas on how to make improvements. “We recently added a stunning paved area to our picturesque Brehon lawn, this has allowed us to bring our drinks receptions outside when the weather permits. Our lawn is also home to a family of resident fairies and our imaginative fairy trail is a wonderful way of entertaining our younger guests.” “I love planning weddings, I love that each wedding is different and that each couple injects their own personalities into the day. I have the best job because I get to look after guests and couples on the happiest day of their lives.” For more information visit www.thebrehon.com. Success Zooms Centre Stage At Rally RALLY organisers and fans alike were thrilled with the huge success that was this year’s Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. Regarded as one of the best ever, the 37th event drew innumerable words of praise from participants and spectators as well as locals. “It was a huge success,” Johnny Hickey of organiser Killarney & District Motor Club told the Killarney Advertiser. “One of the major reasons for its success this year was the fact that it was brought back into the town.” And the eager looks on the faces of rally fans of all ages said it all, with children excitedly waving from the side-lines as the winners zipped past along the stages. “The rally was fantastic from both a competitor and spectator’s point of view. It went down well with everyone and we were delighted as a club that it was an overall safe and enjoyable weekend,” added Johnny. He was also swift to praise Killarney Gardaí who joined forces with rally organisers in a bid to clamp down on so-called “boy racer” activity. Gardaí are pleased with the way their policing operation went over the weekend for this year’s Rally of the Lakes, according to Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí. “While there were a number of arrests they were minor in nature and overall the weekend was peaceful and safe,” said Superintendent Murphy. “A strong presence on the ground both in terms of traffic law enforcement and dealing with public disorder and antisocial behaviour paid dividends in that the weekend passed off without any incident of note.”

DONAGH KELLY and co-driver Conor Foley retained their Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes title on Sunday afternoon. The pair triumphed a year ago with 50 seconds to spare and repeated that feat with a confident performance around Killarney and the Beara Peninsula. Kelly, in his Ford Focus WRC, began the second day in third but by the end of stage ten he was in command, capitalising on overnight leader Gary Jennings' misfortune as he crashed his Subaru to spin out of contention. Alistair Fisher sat in second in his Fiesta R5, with Sam Moffatt’s tyre puncture on stage 11 putting paid to his hopes of hunting down the leaders. Kelly was in total control from there on in and he kept his composure to close out victory by a margin of 49.6 seconds. Fisher took second, which was enough to put him into the lead in the Irish Tarmac series, while Moffatt, also driving a Fiesta R5, was nine seconds further back.

Diocesan website gets a makeover

Bishop Ray Browne has launched a new website for The Diocese of Kerry.

THE Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne has launched a new website for the diocese: www.dioceseofkerry.ie The old and much loved site has been updated and fully reconstructed to facilitate all those who want easy access to the site on their mobile phones and tablets. The website is a major facility of the Diocese of Kerry in communicating and conveying information between all the people of the diocese and beyond. There are 53 parishes in the diocese and 35 of these are uploading their parish newsletter weekly to the site. This therefore is a busy site, updated daily with diocesan news, church news and parish news. The colours and design of the new site are linked to the new diocesan logo Be Christ's Joy. Mary Fagan, director of communications for the diocese, said: “The diocese has embraced and continues to embrace the opportunity to engage with people through social media. Just take out your phone and have a look at this new website dioceseofkerry.ie. It is all at your fingertips. The diocese of Kerry puts time and effort into keeping this website up to date and user friendly. We have photos and news from all around the diocese as well as meeting the basic information needed on Mass times, Mass readings and contact details for every parish in the diocese. In addition to the website we have a Facebook page which we invite you all to visit and hopefully to like. In the words of Pope Francis 'The Internet, in particular, offers immense possibilities for encounter and solidarity. This is something truly good, a gift from God.'" She added: “The diocese of Kerry hopes to continue to respond to the information needs of people in and outside the diocese into the future.” You can use the website to check out the Mass times in the 53 parishes of the diocese and to see what priest is in place in each parish and you have parish office hours and contact details. You can read the weekly parish newsletter of most parishes, as can your relations in any part of the world. You can find out what’s happening in the diocese in the news column or check out community and church-related events.

‘Town umbrellas a great idea’ IN RESPONSE to last week's article in the Killarney Advertiser re umbrellas over Main Street, I think it is a great idea! Umbrella art installations are very popular worldwide. My daughter recently sent a photo from the Dubai Mall depicting a decorative umbrella ceiling. Of course, in Dubai parents take their children there to shade them from the sun! Unfortunately, we rarely have that

problem in Killarney! A colourful street covering of this nature, I believe, would be of great benefit to our town. Incidentally, another great attraction over there is 3D art – near the malls. Wouldn't such artwork be lovely around the town! I suppose we'd better not ask for too much! Helen Moynihan, Dromduhig, Killarney

The Provocateur

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

CRYING FOUL AT DOG LITTER STROLLING and running about Killarney’s wonderful walkways is a joy – particularly once the sun makes an appearance. What horror then when your mindful meander is rudely interrupted. First comes the unmistakeable stench. By the time it reaches your nostrils you just know you will have the horrible task of meticulously cleaning ingrained dog do and disinfecting your previously (relatively) spotless shoes. Don’t get me wrong – it’s fantastic to see our four-legged friends enjoying their rightful share of the magic that is Killarney’s landscape. But negligent or selfish owners who refuse to clean up after their pets will always spoil things for everyone else – fellow dog owners included. Is it too much to ask that dog walkers remove pets’ waste from public places and dispose of it properly? It is simply unfair, as well as unsanitary, for everyone if they have to zigzag around public roads and footpaths as well as streets and sports grounds and indeed beaches in a bid to avoid the foul-smelling patches. Dog fouling is regarded as one of the worst forms of litter and, nationally, has been one of the top issues of complaint from members of the public in recent times. Dog owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets in public areas, but unfortunately some ignore their responsibilities. As dog fouling has negative health implications it is imperative that we strive to reduce the quantity of it on our streets and parks. Toxocariasis is a disease found in animal faeces and is caused by the eggs of the roundworm toxocara. These can be passed from dogs to humans through contact with animal faeces and contaminated soil. Children are particularly at risk and infection can lead to illness and even partial loss of sight. It is an entirely preventable health risk and the main reason that dog owners should clean up after their pets. Freshly deposited faeces are not infectious because toxocara eggs do not become infectious for at least two-three weeks after the faeces have been deposited. Therefore there is no risk of catching toxocariasis whilst clearing up immediately after your dog. So please, please, think of the greater good and clean up after your pet.

IS IT WHO YOU ARE?

Paul Murphy, T.D. has been granted Free Legal Aid though he is paid over €87k per annum and enjoys a generous expense allowance. The Anti-Austerity Alliance Dublin South West TD, under an agreement with the AAA, takes only an average industrial wage and donates the remainder of his salary to help fund party activities and he claims he cannot afford the projected legal fees in relation to his trial on charges of falsely imprisoning Tánaiste Joan Burton at a water charges protest in late 2014. Mr Murphy was sent forward to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on two charges of false imprisonment of Ms Burton and of aide Karen O’Connell at Fortunestown Road, Jobstown, on November 15, 2014. Ms Burton and her entourage had left an event at An Cosán Education Centre at Jobstown, Tallaght, when a demonstration was held which delayed her for about two hours on November 15, 2014. She and her team had been attempting to travel by car to St Thomas’ Church for the rest of the ceremony when the alleged incident occurred. Now, Mr Murphy is in receipt of a fat salary and generous allowances and how he disposes of his income is his own business and should be of no interest to the court and he should pay his own legal fees and not saddle us with his bill. As it is we are covering his salary, his expenses, his contribution to the AAA and now he wants us to pay his legal bill as well. Elected as a champion of the marginalised, a hero of the poor and those worst hit by austerity, does Mr Murphy not wonder how the money committed to his defence could be better spent to alleviate the hardship being experienced by those he professes to represent. Or maybe MrMurphy is of the opinion that anti-austerity begins at home. Another politician who promised new beginnings & a fresh approach to old politics is Katherine Zappone, T.D. Katherine lives in Brittas less than 22km from Leinster House according to the AA route-planner. Now, not alone is Katherine paid to be at work, she is also paid to get there. As she lives 22km from the Dáil, Katherine would be entitled to a tax-free €9,000 per year travelling allowance. However, Katherine has found a longer but more efficient route to the Dáil. This route is 25km long which just happens to put Katherine in a different band of expenses. The longer but more efficient journey entitles Katherine to a tax-free travel allowance of €25,295 a year. What puzzles me is that if the longer route is more efficient than the shorter route why doesn’t she claim for the shorter route and go whichever way takes her fancy. It’s a good thing to get in excess of €87k for work but it’s amazing to get paid to go to work. Not many of her constituents enjoy that perk. Katherine is big on equality and I’m sure her neighbours would love it if they could have it. It is difficult to qualify for Free Legal Aid and it is difficult too to get paid to go to work. Is it any wonder we are where we are?

'Only God controls the weather' HITTING the headlines nationally on Thursday was the climate change debate in Dáil Éireann. Independent Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae has said he does not agree with all the talk about climate change because only God controls the weather, reports the Irish Times. “God above is in charge of the weather and we here can’t do anything about it,” he told the Dáil during a debate on climate change on Wednesday. Deputy Healy-Rae said there had been patterns of climate change going back over centuries, “before there was ever a combustible engine working in this or any other countries”. “If we go back to the 11th and 12th centuries this country was roasted out of it and in the 15th and 16th centuries were drowned out of it,” he said. “In the 1740s, we had a famine in which we lost more than three million people because of two years of bad weather.” Mr Healy-Rae said it has been suggested that climate change is the cause of flooding in the country. “But the flooding is due to the fact that rivers have not been cleaned out,” he said. The Flesk river in Killarney and Glenflesk was cleaned out 35 years ago, he said. “And it was grand for about 20 years. Now it is in a desperate state again, but the view is that now climate change is the cause of flooding and we cannot get funding to clean rivers,” he said.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD NOT BEFORE TIME Executive pay has caused great concern here in the past few years. Investors and consumers alike were astonished at some of the revelations that were made during the banking crisis when the levels of pay being paid to bank executives of loss-making banks were released. Likewise, the pay being offered by state agencies, semi-state bodies, charities and NGO’s seemed excessive. Many charities have suffered because of the revelations. Naively, there was a belief that people worked in charities out of the goodness of their hearts and indeed many thousands of volunteers do so every day. These volunteers were more surprised than anybody else at the levels of pay being offered and in the recent past, executive pay levels in many well-known charities caused concern. People ceased donating to charities because of the excessive pay levels. It’s hard to blame them, yet the worthy causes need the money. Now, the world's biggest sovereign wealth fund plans to target excessive executive pay. Norges Bank is currently looking for a company that it considers to be overpaying executives, and will then use that firm as an example in a report to outline the fund's position on pay. With stakes in more than 9,000 companies and worth $870bn, Norway's fund has a powerful voice. In the past Norway's wealth fund has not taken a position on executive pay, so its focus on the issue is being seen as significant by the fund management industry. "The Norwegian state sovereign wealth fund has always been quite passive in how it has approached its shareholdings, if a company has done something it hasn't liked it's sold the shares and walked away," said Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell. "I think now it is taking a more active stewardship approach, i.e. debating with the company," he added. Last month 59% of BP shareholders voted against a 20% pay rise for chief executive Bob Dudley, that would have netted him £14m. The vote against the increase was non-binding, but BP's chairman said at the annual meeting that the sentiment would be reflected in future pay deals. Management at one of the country's biggest dairy co-ops has refused to disclose individuals' pay packages for fear that they will be poached by global giants such as Apple, Pfizer and PepsiCo. The major co-op revealed for the first time in its annual report recently that its nine top executives shared €2.7m in remuneration packages last year, or an average of €300,000 each. Some would have got more, others less. Some would have got considerably more, but we’re not told; neither are the shareholders who pay these executives. The co-op is owned by more than 3,000 dairy farmers with a turnover of less than €800m per year. The incomes of these dairy farmers are predicted to halve to close to €30,000, due to a 40pc drop in milk price at farm level. But the business's top executives insisted that they were competing for the same staff with multinationals which generate tens of billions of euro in annual profits. The latest details to emerge on pay for top executives in Ireland's dairy processing sector follows the revelations by Órnua that its nine top executives shared more than €9m in remuneration over the last two years. On top of that there was the controversy in the Irish Farmers Association last November, when it emerged that farmers were paying their former chief executive, Pat Smith, more than €500,000 annually. It then emerged that the former president Eddie Downey was in receipt of a pay package and directorships worth close to €200,000 per year.

Mother of baby girl urged to seek medical attention GARDAÍ have appealed for the mother of the newborn baby girl found dead at a waste recycling centre near Bray, Co Wicklow, on Wednesday to seek medical attention and contact them. A postmortem was carried out on Thursday afternoon on the body of the baby girl, which was discovered at about 11am on Wednesday at the recycling centre run by the waste collection company Greenstar at its facility in Fassaroe, near Bray. It is not known if the baby was born alive and gardaí do not know the circumstances of her death. The baby was not clothed when found. Gardaí have said their main priority is the health and welfare of the girl’s mother. During a briefing at Bray Garda Station on Wednesday night, Supt Pat Ward said there were no obvious signs of injury to the baby. The Fassaroe centre accepts waste from all over the country. Bray Gardaí can be contacted at 01-6665300 or the Garda confidential line is 1800-666111.

Three-bedroom flat on the market for £1 A THREE-BEDROOM flat in a North Lanarkshire village is on the market for just £1. The price tag means the property in Upperton, near Airdrie, could be the cheapest home in the UK. Although the dilapidated apartment needs "significant upgrading", Auction House Scotland said it offered "huge potential for development". The flat is due to go under the hammer at an auction in Glasgow, with a guide price of £1, later this month. It is expected to be snapped up by a buy-to-let landlord.

Two-tier pay structure under fire THE general secretary of the ASTI has said it is time to end the two-tier pay structure for new teachers. The issue was raised after an agreement was reached for full-time local authority firefighters which addressed the differences in pay for firefighters recruited since 2012. ASTI general secretary Kieran Christie said that people doing the same work should be paid the same wage.

Match Of The Day For Ita And Bryan

KERRY senior football captain Bryan Sheehan and Ita O’Sullivan emerged as newlyweds from the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church in their hometown of Caherciveen last Friday. The bride and groom posed for the camera of Micheal O’Sullivan at scenic spots around south Kerry before joining friends, family and some of Bryan’s fellow footballers for a reception at Jack’s Coastguard Restaurant in Cromane. Patrick’s Story To Be Staged In INEC IT HAS proved such a hit with audiences that a drama based on the moving story of Rathmore man Patrick O’Connor will be staged in the INEC, Killarney, on May 26. Patrick – The 1916 Story of Captain Patrick O'Connor is written and directed by Aidan O'Connor, Rathmore, and depicts the final weeks of Patrick’s life before he joined the GPO Garrison on Easter Monday, 1916. The show ran in Rathmore Community Centre and such was the keen demand for tickets that an extra two nights were added to the original twonight run. Up to 20 of Patrick's relatives are made the journey from Dublin and all over the country to see the performance. A total of 90 actors, singers, musicians and stage crew are involved in the top-class production. Aidan and cast and crew were overwhelmed by the response from people. A total of 1,200 people have seen the show to date, with some enjoying the production so much that they attended twice! “I think Patrick’s story has moved people because ultimately it’s a story of God and country, love and loss. The cast have done such an amazing job. A century on, Patrick O’Connor and the cast have brought the 1916 Rising into people’s hearts. I’m so proud of them all,” said Aidan. Doors open at 7pm on May 26 and the show starts at 8pm. To book contact 0646671555. 06.05.16 Killarney Advertiser

DIETER’S SWIM ACADEMY SWIMS FOR GOLD AT COMMUNITY GAMES CONGRATULATIONS to the top-class swimming squad from Dieter’s Swim Academy at the Aquila Club which brought home medals and certificates from the Community Games county finals in Tralee. Some were competing in their first-ever swim race and many from the academy achieved personal best times. One of the highlights of the day was seeing the Spa Muckross Relay team swim to gold in the under-13 relay final. It was a closely fought, exciting final with an epic finish where the Spa Muckross team (Ian, Niall and Cathal Coffey and Ethan O’Neill) just pipped Spa Fenit/ Barrow to the finish line. Other highlights included Pia Hickey taking gold in the under-12 backstroke event, Ethan O’Neill storming to victory in the under-14 breaststroke event, Ian Coffey achieving gold in the under-12 breaststroke race and Niall Coffey taking home a bronze medal in the under-14 butterfly event. “In the backstroke under-10 we achieved double success with Faye O’Neill claiming the gold medal and Sarah McAuliffe achieving a fantastic bronze medal,” sad Dieter Gogsch, Aquila Club swim co-ordinator. “It was also great to see some of our junior swimmers do so well in their first ever swim gala with Sabra Hickey swimming amazingly to a bronze medal in the under-8 front crawl and Fionn O’Donoghue Sheahan claiming a fourth in the under-8 boys front crawl event.” Dieter added: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the swimmers that competed in the Community Games. It is great to see how all their hard

I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. C.D.

Everyone says it’s the big events you’ll miss him. And they smile that awkward smile, To tell you what they’re thinking That they understand it all. But it’s never been the big things, That I’ve struggled with, I just imagine you late as always, Busy with your sheep. It’s the little things, the Westerns on TV. When I turn on instinct towards the couch I expect to see you drinking tea. Telling me, “This is a classic”. John Wayne’s the best cowboy of course. Yet, all I’m met with is silence And that’s the part that hurts. I miss those conversations, And I am often blindsighted, When I find myself quoting you. Sometimes these words, they hurt. And sometimes they heal. They say, “grief is the price we pay for love”. And in moments when we feel we are drowning, We whisper quietly to ourselves. “Toughen Babs”, and imagine the voice is you. Love Always, Sam and Danz Your wisdom in all it’s worth.

precious mother of jesus Mother of Divine Grace, you can find a way, where there is no way. Please hear my prayer and grant me my request. (Say 6 times daily & your request will be granted). C.D.

Club Captain Liam Hartnett exhausted his supply of superlatives during the course of his presentation speech, following the conclusion of his “Captain’s Charity Day” on Sunday last, the 1st of May. Liam began by expressing his delight at the at both the turnout of gentlemen golfer’s who took part in the event, and at his amazement at the amount of cash raised for his chosen charities, Liam admitted to being “astonished and overwhelmed” in equal amounts, as he thanked all of those who contributed so very profoundly with their generosity, time, and most importantly their hard earned cash, that contributed towards making his Captain’s Day, the huge success that it had become. Liam began by thanking his major sponsors. Liam then went on to thank those who had helped out during the course of the day, including Course Manager Enda Murphy and his staff who had presented the “Mahony’s Point” course in such excellent condition, and with the opening of the new tee-boxes on the 4th and 14th holes and the new layout of greens on the 4th and 13th holes. He then went on to thank Patricia McEnery, Shirley Clifford and Breeda Neeson, who sold the tickets for the raffle and for the putting competition, the amount raised from these two enterprises was almost €1,500 alone, and this was in no small way due to the bewitching smiles and the beguiling personalities of these ladies, they managed to prise large amounts of cash even from some of the “deepest pockets” in the Club, and they also managed to get a generous “bid” for a Kerry Jersey, which had been donated and autographed by Colm “The Gooch” Cooper. During the course of the presentation of the prizes Liam revealed that the Surprise winning bid for The Gooch’s shirt had come from a most unlikely source, Barry Duggan, who during his own speech mentioned that when a Corkman was purchasing a Kerry Jersey, then the next thing would be the opening of the transfer market inter-alia Clubs and Counties. Liam also mentioned the Men’s Club PRO, Victor Mulcahy who had assisted him for almost the entire duration of the “timesheet” in ensuring the smooth running of the competition itself. 46 teams took part in the competition, and every tee-time from 7.00am to 2.40pm were filled, and the largesse of many of those who took part was just fantastic, with many of those who took part contributing more than the entry fee itself, and the income from the golf competition came to the incredible amount of €5,800. Competition Results. 1s James Devane (10), Sean Devane (16), Tom Ashe (17), and Andrew Garnett

Lough Lein. The day proved to be one of the better of the weekend weather wise and the competition saw a very healthy turn out with a good number of anglers reporting a catch. The Batty O’Brien Memorial Cup went the way of Mick Lenihan this year and the first points for the Angler of the Year 2016 were distributed. Liam Buckley Landed the Heaviest Trout on the day and the top five rods on the day were as follows: 1) Mick Lenihan 2) DJ O’Riordan 3) Gary Fleming 4) Eamonn O’Leary 5) Liam Buckley Our next competition will be the rescheduled Caragh Lake Competition, being held on Sunday 15th May. Entries can now be made with any club officers and more details will be in next weeks edition. Lough Lein will be a busy spot this Sunday as the Munster Lake Competition for 2016 is held - we are proud to have two full teams entered this year and wish them tight lines for the competition. At our weigh-in last Sunday, Club Chairman DJ O’Riordan addressed the gathered anglers and gave a short briefing on information sent on to us from Caragh Bridge Angling Club For many years now the members of Killarney Salmon & Trout were hosted for two days annually on the Caragh River, courtesy of the Caragh Bridge Club - that club has now contacted the Chairman to inform us that they have revised the invitation and are now offering fishing on the last Sunday of every month to club members - The Chairman stressed that all members opting to avail of this should ensure they carry their club membership card with them for inspection ,if demanded, as agreed with the Caragh Bridge Club. This very kind offer allows members to avail of a lovely sea trout and salmon running river so its worth pencilling those Sundays in the calendar!
