"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb
Stars Of New DVD Take Well-Deserved Bow THE longest-serving staff member in McDonalds in Killarney, Anthony Jones was one of a number of stars who made their debut on the small screen on Wednesday. Anthony, who has worked in the Park Road franchise for two days a week for 14 years, was one of 25 people involved in a new DVD, An Independent Life, showcasing the daily activities of a group of young adults who are supported by the Kerry Parents & Friends Association in Killarney. Anthony really enjoyed being involved with the recording of the video. “It is something I would love everyone to see,” Anthony said. Another participant, Stephen Brosnan said the DVD gives employers a chance to see their skills. Stephen works in both Heatons and Elverys Sports in Killarney. “I also wanted it to show how relationships and friendships are important to me and that my job and the pay helps me to be independent,” Stephen said. A large group of family and friends attended the launch, at The Malton Hotel, of An
Independent Life, which was produced by Tadhg Hayes and funded by South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. The 20-minute DVD gives a snapshot into the lives of the young adult participants. Instructor with the KPFA Batt Healy said the aim was to make a DVD to highlight that people with
disabilities have the same yearnings around independent living and relationships as everyone else and to showcase their capacity in both working and life situations. “This DVD will help us send out the message that these young adults have the same rights and desires as their peers and we have received a very positive response to this message,” Batt said.
Editor’s View Hopes and dreams are universal DESCRIBING how it feels to have a boyfriend break up with you by text message. Articulating your hopes and dreams as you progress into your 20s and 30s. Putting into words your relationship with your boss (“She’s the bomb and she knows all about that….she’s nice; she can be cranky but she’s fine out.”). These are sentiments with which all young adults will identify and they are succinctly expressed in a must-view new documentary that gives voice to a group of 25 men and women in the Killarney area. Made by Tadhg Hayes, An Independent Life provides an inspiring snapshot of what daily life is like when you have an intellectual disability. Accompanied by an upbeat soundtrack, it follows the fortunes of the young local people who are all successfully carving out paths for themselves as they navigate work and leisure. “I feel good, confident and go to the gym
twice a week,” muses one young woman. A young man confides that he would like to go on a blind date, while another reminisces about his schooldays: “My teacher asked me what I wanted to do. I want a job. I want independent living in years to come…that means a flat, supported by other people maybe; in other words, they might give me support – just having someone there to help me in case something may happen.” The DVD shows numerous local employers – such as managers from the International and Malton hotels, Deenagh Lodge and Kerry Outdoor Sports – pay glowing tribute to the film participants as employees. Make it your business to take a look at this compelling piece of reality television made right on our doorstep; DVDs will be available in coming weeks and you can see it on https:// youtu.be/gkX3UsnXOcw EVE KELLIHER, EDITOR

DVD producer Tadhg Hayes said he wanted the DVD to provide the participants with a voice to show the wide range of activities they are involved in as well as some of the challenges they face. Copies of the DVD will be available in coming weeks from KPFA or can be accessed through YouTube, see https://youtu.be/gkX3UsnXOcw

Question My son shaved his head on Saturday and was sent home from secondary school on the following Monday. The school is using school policy to justify suspending him for one week until his hair starts to grow. What can I do? Answer All schools should have policies in place to deal with issues as they arise in the normal day-to-day running of a school (codes of behavior, school rules and other policies). These should be provided or made available to parents of children attending the school. If you are unhappy about a school’s policy or the implementation of a school’s policy you can make a complaint to the school. The school should have a formal complaints procedure that you can follow. The complaints procedure usually involves contacting the principal with your complaint. (The school’s procedures may ask you to speak to another member of staff before speaking with the principal.) If having spoken with the school principal, you are still not happy that your complaint has been resolved you may contact the chairperson of the school’s management authority. If the chairperson cannot resolve your complaint they should discuss the matter at a meeting of the management authority. The school’s Board of Management is usually the management authority. However, in the case of Education and Training Board schools you should contact the Education and Training Board responsible for the school. Shortly after reaching its decision, the management authority will let you know its decision on your complaint. This decision ends the school complaints process. The Department of Education and Skills provides information about making a complaint to a school on their website. If you have followed the school’s complaints procedures and you are not satisfied with the outcome you can escalate your complaint about the school to the Ombudsman for Children’s Office. The key criterion for any intervention by the Ombudsman for Children is that the action complained of has or may have adversely affected the child. The Ombudsman can examine any administrative actions of the school, staff or Board of Management including whether the school’s policies have been followed correctly or if those policies are fair.

‘WE HAVE LOST A FRIEND, A COLLEAGUE AND A LEADER’ HEARTFELT tributes were paid this week following the passing of Canon Pat Horgan. Hundreds are expected to the funeral Mass which takes place today, Friday, at 10.30am in St Mary’s Cathedral. Canon Horgan celebrated the diamond jubilee (60th anniversary) of his ordination with a Mass at the Church of the Resurrection last year. A native of Dromtariffe in north Cork, Canon Pat was one of the most respected clerics in the Kerry diocese. He passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Marymount Hospice in Cork. Canon Horgan was ordained on June 19, 1955, after completing his studies in Maynooth. He started off his life as a priest in Salford
Diocese in Manchester. He went on to serve in Rathmore parish before moving to Moyvane in north Kerry. After spending time in Ballyferriter he took up a teaching post at St Brendan’s College in Killarney. He would go on to spend 21 years teaching French and Maths at the college. In 1978 the canon was appointed principal of St Michael’s in Listowel and during his seven years there oversaw the building of an extension to the school. He returned to parish work in 1985 and was the parish priest at Our Lady of St Brendan’s in Tralee until 1996. In July 1996 he became the parish priest of Rathmore. Canon Pat was involved in many community organisations including Kerry Mental Health
Association. He retired from fulltime ministry a decade ago but remained very active in the diocese. Canon Pat was a founder member of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society. His friend and colleague on the committee, society chairman Jerry O’Grady described Canon Pat as “inspirational”. “No one has put more energy and passion into achieving our objectives, than Fr Pat,” said Mr O’Grady. “In his 85th year, his drive and enthusiasm were undiminished and he was a shining example to us all.” Mr O’Grady added: “We have lost a friend, a colleague and a leader. May he rest in peace.”

Over A Thousand Reasons To Celebrate Memory Of Paddy THE sun smiled down on the recent walk in memory of Paddy Turner and also on the presentation of the proceeds of the fundraiser on Friday. The fundraiser generated over a thousand euro for deserving local causes. Close to a hundred people took part in the walk and the final figure raised was €1170 which was divided equally between the two beneficiaries, the Killarney Men’s Shed and the Killarney Branch of the Kerry Mental Health Association. “It was a great sign of the community spirit in Killarney that a walk in memory of Paddy, with no family connections in Killarney, was such a success. It is hopefully the first of our annual walks in memory of Paddy,” said Paddy’s friend and walk organiser Enda Walshe. The cheque presentation took place at the bench at the top of High Street dedicated to the memory of Paddy.

THE Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns Meitheal swung into action at the Lissivigeen roundabout on a sun-splashed Monday evening this week. The gathering was one of the best turnouts so far, with some 24 volunteers out in force with their shovels and rakes. The Meitheal group was supported by residents of Lissivigeen who turned up the clean the dirt and debris on the approach roads on the Lissivigeen roundabout and islands. “We were very fortunate that we had lovely summer’s evening and the combined energy of the residents association and the Meitheal ensured the whole area was swept and cleared. It is now looking in pristine condition for Tidy Towns judging which will begin on June 15,” said Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns. “As this is the one of the major arteries for approaching Killarney it is vital that it looks good, as first impressions are key to all judging. The Monday night Meitheal has really set the bar for the town in 2016.”

ACCLAIMED concert pianist Santa Ignace will be back in Killarney for a one-off concert performance in The Brehon Hotel on Wednesday, June 1, at 7.30pm. Santa, who is currently studying for her second Master’s degree in piano performance at Amsterdam Conservatorium, is taking a short break from her studies to visit the many friends she made during her time living and working in Killarney. The performance in The Brehon will provide her with the opportunity to perform some of the works she has been preparing as part of her studies over this past year. Santa is really looking forward to her return to Killarney and is delighted to bring her latest programme which includes music by Medtner and Chopin. Santa will be joined on the evening by talented Hannah Sherry, Headford, a former student of hers, who will open the proceedings with music by Schumann and Chopin. This Piano Evening with San-
ta Ignace and Hannah Sherry promises to be a delight for lovers of classical music and an all too infrequent opportunity to see a wonderful pianist and master musician at work. Santa wanted to express her sincere thanks to Eileen O’Donoghue for her support and encouragement and for allowing her the fantastic facility at The Brehon Hotel Killarney. Admission to The Piano Evening is €15 and €10 for student’s unreserved seating. Santa Ignace.

Fireman Alex Makes A Splash To Win Lakes Of Killarney Marathon IT BROKE all records and the Lakes of Killarney Marathon and Half Marathon was blessed with the weather last weekend. Set against the backdrop of the spectacular Lough Lein, Ross Castle, ancient cooper mines, and this year’s crop of wild garlic and bluebells, it attracted over 400 athletes. Corkman Alex O’Shea, the famous fireman who set a Guinness World Record for running a marathon in full fireman costume, broke the Lakes of Killarney record on Saturday with a blistering time of 02:34:31. Alex will attempt to set a record time for the fastest Malin to Mizen on foot this year. “It was a magnificent race in Killarney's beautiful National Park. It ticks a lot of boxes,” said Alex. “I am also delighted to have been told I set a new course record in the process. What a course… It simply doesn't get much more scenic then this.” The biggest cheer of the day went to another phenomenal Cork athlete, Gerry Forde, wheelchair athlete, who was completing his 300th marathon. Many competitors like Humphrey Moynihan of Killarney were notching up their 30th marathon already this year. The first lady home was Doloris Duffy in an amazing time of 03:29:00. The event was organised by Alan Ryan, Hardman Events, based in Killarney, who paid tribute to all who took part and volunteered. “In terms of atmosphere, setting, weather, we were absolutely delighted with this year's event. Killarney National Park looked absolutely amazing. We are truly grateful for the kind support of Pat Dawson, Regional Manager, National Park and Wildlife Services and the NPWS local Park Rangers for their assistance.”

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Over medium heat, warm the oil in a large pan. Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper, slip them into the pan, and cook until they are well browned on all sides. When the chicken is deeply golden, transfer it to a platter and keep it in a warm place. Pour off all but two tablespoons of the cooking fat from the pan. Lower the heat to medium, add the butter, onions, shallots, garlic, and thyme, and cook and stir just until the vegetables start to take on a little colour. Add the potatoes, carrots, celeriac and bacon and cook for about five minutes. Cover the pan and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and return the chicken to the pan. Add the chicken stock, bring to the boil. Bake, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes.

The Kerry People X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
The Kerry People, which is inspired by the popular Humans of New York blog and bestseller, captures local faces on camera
Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-Men: Apocalypse. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Killarney’s Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

Children’s yoga camps in Muckross
Once school’s out, children’s yoga camps will be starting at the Muckross Traditional Farms, says yoga instructor Aileen Kingerlee
THE children’s yoga camps at Muckross Traditional Farms run five days a week and the kids have an amazing week filled with activities and fun. Each day starts with an hours yoga class at the schoolhouse, then we head off into the traditional farm each day we do a different activity from milking cows, learning how butter is made, making bread, building their teepees and foraging for food, to playing in the woodland playground. Then it's back to the schoolhouse for a 40 min relaxing yoga class and writing up our yoga journals. The week is cantered around building with the children their own yoga routine which they can continue after camp. Yoga has so many benefits for children from developing strength, stamina, balance and co-ordination. It improves concentration, confidence and creates mindfulness. It is something that will continue to help children in their lives with dealing with the busy society that we operate in. We also spend a lot of time out in nature again encouraging children to connect with their environment and play and have fun outside in the fresh air. The combination of yoga, nature and creativity leaves everyone feeling relaxed rejuvenated and refreshed. Contact Aileen Kingerlee on 086-0399358.

CONSIDER MICROSUCTION FOR EARWAX REMOVAL Audiology Medical Services advises on the benefits of considering microsuction for earwax removal
THERE are several issues associated with earwax removal by syringing of the ear canal. Syringing could and in many cases, did cause issues such as otitis media (middle ear infection), Otitis Externa (outer ear infection), perforation of the eardrum and trauma to the external auditory meatus (the ear canal). Not just that, it actually wasn't very effective at removing the earwax in many cases. That is why the procedure was generally abandoned several years ago. Most earwax removal undertaken in Ireland is now done with an irrigation system. Of course, modern irrigation is safer than syringing, however there are still the possibility of some of the same complications arising. It can cause otitis media and otitis externa, but there is little chance of perforation of the eardrum. Many patients complain though that it is an uncomfortable process. Because water is used it can also sometimes be messy. This is why we were determined to introduce microsuction earwax removal to our practice.
Introducing microsuction to our practice allowed us to introduce completely safe, effective and comfortable earwax removal in the comfort of our Practice. Microsuction involves no introduction of liquid or any other material to the ear canal which completely ensures that no infection is introduced. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Views On Climate Change An urgent opportunity to reduce WE WISH to make some important points regarding Deputy Danny Healy-Rae’s stated views on climate change. While Mr Healy-Rae believes that God is solely responsible for climate change, Pope Francis does not share this belief. Pope Francis has stated: “Most global warming in recent decades is due to the great concentration of greenhouse gases released mainly as a result of human activity.” He has called on Catholics around the world to take action to reduce their contribution to this crisis. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the global expert body appointed by the UN, in 2014 warned, “huxxxxxxxxx man influence on the climate system is clear… Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia.” Furthermore, the IPCC warned that without a significant global effort to counter negative human impact on the climate we face “substantial species extinction, [and] global and regional food insecurity”. We encourage Mr Healy-Rae to access Trócaire’s vast resources on climate change which clearly outline the devastating impacts being felt in the developing world. Mr Healy-Rae’s comments are deeply regrettable. By attempting to convince the Kerry, and Irish, public that the world’s leading experts and Pope Francis are wrong on the issue of climate change, he is doing his constituents and his country a disservice. alcohol harm in Ireland WE WELCOME the Government commitment to enacting the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill in the Programme for a Partnership Government and fully support its prompt progression through the Oireachtas. This long-awaited legislation, which has cross-party support in the Oireachtas, has already concluded second stage in the Seanad and can quickly be enacted and become law within the first 100 days of this Government, if the political will is there to finally tackle our harmful relationship with alcohol in Ireland. Harmful alcohol consumption in Ireland costs the State €2.35 billion annually in providing healthcare, policing and enforcement, and other services. We know that alcohol harm not only affects the individual drinker, but also affects others around them, including their children and other family members, friends, co-workers and the wider community. The lack of a progressive alcohol policy in Ireland to date has resulted in children’s lives being blighted by alcohol misuse resulting from parental addiction and contributing to financial difficulties, family breakdown, neglect and abuse.
The measures within the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill are a very important and positive first step in our efforts to reduce alcohol harm and improve the health, safety and wellbeing of our people. Most importantly, this legislation will save lives and improve the quality and quantity of life for many of our citizens. Alcohol Health Alliance Ireland – the first public health advocacy coalition formed on alcohol, is calling on the new partnership Government to tackle these urgent problems now by enacting the Public Health (Alcohol) Bill without further delay. This will lead to immediate improvements in the health and wellbeing of our people as well as a huge economic benefit in our society. We look forward to supporting our public representatives in this initiative.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
JOHN 16:12-15: Wisdom about life comes slowly and sometimes painfully. Hearing the "right" answer at the “wrong” time does not help us. We need to be ready and open to receiving the truth if it is to have any impact. Perhaps you can recall some occasions when it was the “right” time for you to learn a truth about life. Remember your experiences of growing in understanding and truth. Perhaps the Spirit guided you through the words of someone close to you, or through the words and actions of people you read about or saw on TV. Or maybe understanding came to you when praying or reflecting on your life. Remember and give thanks for the people who have helped you to greater wisdom on your journey through life. Wisdom is handed on from person to person, and from generation to generation, within families, within communities, etc. Are there any particular gems of wisdom that you cherish from what has been handed on to you? John Byrne, OSA
MUSINGS
AS A child in Dublin, the story of St Patrick and his use of the shamrock to explain the mystery of three persons in one God was frequently repeated in homilies. The shamrock and symbols of The Trinity are frequently used in Celtic art and something that we especially associate with our Irish Church. The Book of Kells and other early Irish Gospel manuscripts are beautifully adorned with these sacred symbols. I often think of this great Trinitarian art while I pray the words of today’s Alleluia verse: “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.| The response is completed by the words “the God who is, who was, and who is to come” which remind me of the difficult concept of infinity. My prayer today is that the God who created me, lived on earth like me, will continue to inspire me to higher things. Alan Whelan Carnahone, Beaufort

CAN SHEDDING BELONGINGS ADD MAGIC TO OUR LIVES? THE other day I picked up my copy of Marie Kondo’s first bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, again. The enticing tome dedicated to tidying has a resonance all its own, despite the seemingly dull subject matter. In fact, its title alone adds sparkle and a feel-good factor to what would in times gone by have been an onerous task. It was followed this year by its successor Spark Joy, whose title reflects Kondo’s key philosophy– unless an item sparks joy, then it is a candidate for the “discard” pile. A New York Times bestseller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up takes readers step-by-step through Marie’s revolutionary KonMari Method for simplifying, organising, and storing. Sounds boring, but it’s written in such a way that I would challenge even the messiest of individuals not to enjoy this little page-turner as simply a good read in its own right. (In fact, my only issue with it is I become so engrossed in it that I have yet to get around to putting its ethos info full effect myself!) In it, the organisational guru takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly declutter your home once, you'll never have to do it again. It’s quirky and to the point, and basically turns the room-by-room approach on its head, advising an all-at-once approach, tidying by category rather than by space. So motivational has Marie’s advice been that she has inspired a whole legion of followers, many of whom enjoy showing off their results online. What it all goes to show is decluttering has become a buzzword of our times. Think of James Wallman’s seminal book Stuffocation: Living More With Less whose message is “memories live longer than things”. And, arguably more unsettlingly, we also have those TV documentaries that turn a spotlight on hoarders. Some television viewers will either gawp with a sense of smug voyeurism but many others will find the experience makes for uncomfortable viewing. Isn’t it unsettlingly bordering on exploitation of emotionally vulnerable people? I think I’d rather stick with the upbeat, inspirational end of the scale in the form of Marie Kondo’s manifesto. Most importantly, however long our belated spring-cleans take, we should spare a thought for charity. As we create that elusive sense of glorious space in our homes, we should be mindful that by donating unwanted clothes and items to charity, we are enriching other lives. Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Let us know your views at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

RIO’S PROBLEMS The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro could spark a “full-blown public health disaster,” doctors have warned. Since the Zika virus was first identified in Brazil in May 2015, the disease's spread through Latin America has been declared a health emergency by the World Health Organisation and the number of suspected cases in Rio is the highest of any state in the country. The continued presence of the virus ahead of the summer Olympics has caused athletes and health specialists to question the risks involved in allowing the Games to go ahead with hundreds of thousands of spectators travelling to the city. Writing in the Harvard Public Health Review, Dr Amir Attaran said the Games could speed up the spread of the virus, and suggested the Games could be hosted by another city in Brazil where the illness is less of a threat. He said: “While Brazil's Zika inevitably will spread globally, given enough time, viruses always do - it helps nobody to speed that up. In particular, it cannot possibly help when an estimated 500,000 foreign tourists flock into Rio for the Games, potentially becoming infected, and returning to their homes where both local Aedes mosquitoes and sexual transmission can establish new outbreaks. All it takes is one infected traveller, a few viral introductions of that kind, in a few countries, or maybe continents, would make a full-blown global health disaster.” With less than three months to go until the Games begin on 5 August, it is unlikely the continued presence of the virus will cause officials to take drastic action. However, the warning will be yet another blow to Brazilian authorities, which are already mired in a string of controversies that have undermined confidence in the country’s ability to host ' the Olympics. Brazil is currently grappling with steep economic decline, while a continuing presidential impeachment attempt alongside the country’s largest ever corruption scandal has caused national outrage. Elsewhere, severe water pollution problems, the collapse of a new cycle path resulting in the death of two people and frightening reports of gang violence in upmarket shopping areas have fuelled scepticism about the suitability of Rio to host the Games.
Alleged incident of taxi refusing fare to Ross Road KERRY AIRPORT is to investigate an incident where a couple travelling to Ross Road in Killarney were allegedly refused passage by a taxi driver at the airport. Radio Kerry highlighted the alleged incident which has been condemned by Killarney hotelier Michael Rosney who described it as “appalling”. Former Bord Fáilte UK head Margaret Cahill and her husband were travelling from London to their home in Killarney. After placing their luggage in a taxi and requesting to be brought to their destination, the driver allegedly refused, citing traffic on Ross Road due to Killarney Races as the reason.

Inspired By Danny Casey
VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD LISTEN CAREFULLY In a reported interview in the Sunday Independent with Michael Healy-Rae and his brother Danny the topic of weather change was discussed and Danny referred to the terrible weather conditions which prevailed in 1740, when it rained for two years. Danny was quoted as saying: “Cattle had no hair, no feet for the winter. They died, they starved. The people had no turf for the fire; they perished with the cold.” Perhaps what Danny actually said was that the cattle had no hay and that they had no feed for the winter. Is it any wonder Michael said the journalist had a way of getting underneath a fella’s skin. Surely a cursory glance at the proof would have alerted the writer to what was obviously something that should have warranted another look. Considering much of the article focused on exactly what Michael had said to Enda Kenny and his reasons for saying exactly what he had said, language was important, the journalist was making the point that precise language was vital. She picked Michael up on a simple thing that anyone would say. Michael and Enda were talking about a possible job offer and Michael was mindful of his situation and wanted to ensure that both he and the job were compatible. That’s fine. That’s natural. I wouldn’t have much time for someone who would rush in and take whatever was being offered without giving it careful consideration. Michael wanted to be sure that he was capable of doing the job and not letting anyone down. Focusing on his wording was petty. But, having focused on his choice of words wouldn’t you think she would also have focused on Danny’s choice of words. Bald cattle without hooves would be fairly remarkable around Kilgarvan and clarification would obviously be necessary. I think the journalist missed an opportunity to explore an important issue. Danny is a shrewd man and when he says God is in charge of the weather you can’t argue with that. God gives us the beginnings of things and allows us to develop little by little. It’s called free will and we have used it & have done damage to the environment over the years and we have now inherited that crisis and it’s time for fundamental change. Maybe it’s time to let God back in to our lives. Danny also said something about the Chinese having no notion in the world of drinking milk. Our dairy industry is hoping to sell a lot of milk to the Chinese but maybe they have overestimated the potential of the market. If, as Danny says, they have no notion of drinking milk, especially in large amounts, I hope the statistics are there and the research done to justify our hopes in the Chinese market. On this one, I hope Danny got it wrong. Already the USA is facing one of the most difficult issues of its time. The country is facing a cheese glut. US dairy farmers boosted production in recent years because of soaring dairy prices. However, the relatively strong dollar means they haven't had as many cheese exports as expected. Now, the country has more cheese than it knows what to do with. In cold commercial cheese storage, there is now a record 1.19 billion pounds. The CEO of Dean Foods, the largest US dairy company, said last month: “US butter and cheese prices remaining uncompetitive versus the international market. We continue to see a decline in overall US dairy exports.” Retail cheese prices are down 4.3 per cent from a year earlier and this is bad news for dairy farmers: the glut means they are finding it more difficult to make money. Michigan dairy owner Carla Wardin told The Wall Street Journal about the issue, saying: "You do the exact same thing ... You milk more cows." Sound familiar?

EgyptAir crash AN EGYPTAIR flight from Paris to Cairo made two sharp turns before plunging into the Mediterranean Sea, Greece's defence minister says. Panos Kammenos said the Airbus A320 had "turned 90 degrees left and then a 360-degree turn to the right". It then dropped more than 25,000ft (7,620m) before disappearing from radar, he added. Egypt's civil aviation minister has said the possibility of a terror attack is stronger than technical failure. Sixty-six people were on board Flight MS804, most of them from Egypt or France. A Briton was among the passengers. "There have been finds south-east of Crete, inside the Cairo flight information area," Greek army general staff spokesman Vassilis Beletsiotis told AFP news agency. The search in seas south of the Greek island of Karpathos involves Greek and Egyptian naval forces.Of those on the plane, 56 were passengers, seven were crew members and three were security personnel. Flight MS804 left Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris at 23:09 local time on Wednesday (21:09 GMT) and was scheduled to arrive in the Egyptian capital soon after 03:15 local time on Thursday. EgyptAir said the plane had been flying at 37,000ft (11,300m) when it disappeared from radar shortly after entering Egyptian airspace. Greek aviation officials say air traffic controllers spoke to the pilot when he entered Greek airspace and everything appeared normal.

Are you ready to declutter your wardrobe?
KERRY women are being urged to declutter their closets and cross the Cork-Kerry border with their haul for a very good cause. Concern Worldwide, Ireland’s largest humanitarian aid agency, has launched ‘Closet Clearout’ with the help of Cork fashionista Just Jordan (Lisa Jordan). The fundraising initiative was launched with a photoshoot in Cork by Killarney photographer Marek Hajdasz this week. It encourages women to give a little and get back a lot by renting a clothes rail at the event taking place at The Clarion Hotel on Sunday, June 12, at 12pm. The Closet Clearout is an opportunity for women to finally part ways with that pricey dress they have only worn once, such as to a wedding, but it is now starting to gather dust in their wardrobe. Concern is offering the chance to finally say cheerio to the dress, make some money and potentially grab a designer bargain while helping people living in some of the world’s most impoverished areas. How it works: Participants purchase a rail at €35 to sell their unwanted garments. When there, they have the chance to make cash from the sale of their rail while browsing other rails and grabbing a bargain for themselves too. All proceeds from the rail purchases goes to Concern Worldwide. Just Jordan will be there on the day offering invaluable advice to sellers and will even showcase some of the best dresses up for grabs on the day. Speaking at the launch at Fran & Jane retailers on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork city yesterday, Lisa Jordan said: “ “I will be at the event helping and giving people tips on their stalls. I would urge people to get involved because not only is it an amazing cause but also it gives them the opportunity to declutter their wardrobes and make a little bit of money themselves. It’s a girls’ day out with a really positive result, helping those who are desperately in need.” For more details on ‘Closet Clearout’ and how you can get involved log on to www. bit.ly/ClosetClearoutCork for more details.

New state-of-the-art self service launderette for Killarney A REVOLUTIONARY service has been introduced in Killarney’s Deerpark retail park area. A state-of-the-art self-service launderette is located just outside Tesco at Deerpark. “The Revolution laundrette is not a traditional laundry service with limited opening hours and high costs,” said a spokesperson. “Instead, it is located in the car park where it remains open 24 hours a day, seven days per week. This is ideal for busy homes where there can be so much to do every day that getting the laundry washed and dried is a huge challenge.” The costs for either washing or drying clothes or larger items are less than half that of the traditional laundrette, starting from €2 to dry and €4 for an 8kg wash. The washing cycle only takes 30 minutes and the washing detergent is included in the cycle, so there is no need for customers to bring their own. “The dryer is a large capacity dryer (18kg) and is great for drying heavy loads in the worst of weather and only takes 15 minutes, depending on the load capacity,” added the spokesperson. “The launderette is ideal for weekly washing, curtains, duvets, and pillows. Our customer experience in using Revolution launderette. Revolution Laundrette is high quality, fast, reliable, and affordable 24/7 service.” For other locations nationwide call 1850 444 342.

Killarney’s outdoors the inspiration for techstart-up Campsited.com VISITORS to Killarney have drawn inspiration from its spectacular beauty for a long time, but in recent years a local man has used his connection to the land, and his love for it, to inspire his own tech start-up, Campsited. com. Finán O’Donoghue, a Killarney native now living in Dublin, grew up exploring Killarney National Park, and hiking the mountains around Killarney with his dad. When his first child was born, Finán knew that he wanted to impart his love for the outdoors to his own son and tried to book a camping holiday abroad for his young family. "Going online to find and book a camping trip was excruciating," said Finán. “I found myself trawling through dozens of websites. None were really easy to use or had a comprehensive view of campsites around the world. Most also lacked essential details.” “I realised that if this was my experience, many others, eager to get into nature and enjoy time with their families and friends, must be having this problem too. So I decided to do something about it and set up Campsited.com.”
Finán O’Donoghue.
Campsited’s ambition is to be the easiest way for people to find and book campsites around the world. It currently lists parks, from traditional campsites to glamping sites, across Ireland and the UK. Campsited has ambitious plans to push further into Europe in 2016, and further afield again from 2017 Currently, more than 1,300 parks are on Campsited and that figure is increasing weekly and it has just relaunched its website. Finán’s ambition for the future is to have an office in Dublin and another in Killarney, which he hopes will enable him create employment in the town. “It has always been part of my plan to try and create jobs locally. Not only because Killarney is the birthplace of Campsited, and a perfect place to keep the business closely connected to the outdoors, but also to give something back to the town by way of a small thank you for inspiring me in the first place” says Finán. Campsited has just started a funding round that will see the full time team grow over the coming months and fund the business for the next 18 months.

Matt LeBlanc On ‘Top Gear,’ Driverless Cars And His Favourite Stretch Of Road MATT LEBLANC learned to drive in a 1974 Datsun pickup truck when he was 12 years old. The actor grew up just outside Boston. “I couldn’t really reach the pedals too good. I was sitting on the edge of the seat,” he said. “I was one of those little boys who couldn’t wait to get my licence.” This month, Mr LeBlanc makes his debut as host of the BBC’s long-running car show, “Top Gear”. Filming has taken him to South Africa, Morocco and Kerry, where he said he still struggles with right-hand-drive cars. Mr LeBlanc, 48, says the revamped “Top Gear,” which premieres in the U.K. on May 29 and on BBC, will feature more motorcycles, celebrity guests and humour. “I think my job has been to bring more comedy to it overall,” he said. “I’ve been pitching jokes in the car and trying to make it funnier whenever I can.”
What’s the appeal of driving for you? There’s a sense of freedom and independence, mastering your own
destiny—all those cliché kind of things. I’m kind of a gear head in the sense that I love the technology of cars. An engine is like a big three-dimensional puzzle.
As a teenager, did you ever do anything stupid in a car? Of course. Who hasn’t? The list is too long to get into.
What are the differences between American and European drivers? Everything is a little wider, a little bigger in America. I think there tends to be a little more precision in European drivers, because there’s less margin for error. You know, if you go offline, you’re going to hit that thousand-year-old church. Don’t do that. We don’t really have that in the States.
What’s your favourite stretch of road? I love the California coast and the Pacific Northwest. Anywhere from, say, Morro Bay all the way up to San Francisco. And then north of that— the coast of Washington, the coast
of Oregon. Highway 1 all the way up the coast is great. There’s a road we drove in Morocco that looked like ribbon candy, it was absolutely spectacular. That was in the Ariel Nomad, which is this off-road version of the Ariel Atom, an English car. It’s really lightweight, almost like a kit car.
What’s in your garage at home? Mostly Porsches. I have a Mercedes SUV as well, but mostly Porsches. I have a [Porsche] GT2 RS at my house. It’s basically a racecar with a license plate on it. That’s a pretty cool car.
What’s the weirdest vehicle you’ve ever driven? Probably this thing we did on “Top Gear,” the Reliant Rialto. It looks like a regular car, it’s kind of square, but with just one wheel in the front. In my opinion, the most awful car ever designed. On a roundabout it would just flip over. Chris Evans and I had to drive them from London to Blackpool, and it was just a disaster. Those cars did not make it.

That’s a lot of making out, isn’t it? The driverless car—it’ll be interesting to see how that catches on. My knee-jerk reaction to that is: No, thank you. What’s the point? Might as well just drive. I’m not a very good passenger. I tend to say things like, Why are you going so slow? Why are you braking that early? Why are you braking that late? You should have turned in 10 feet ago.

THE YOUNGEST EVER FORMULA 1 WINNER ON HIS debut for Red Bull Racing, Max Verstappen became the youngest driver to win a Formula One race in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The previous youngest was Sebastian Vettel who won his first Grand Prix at the ripe old age of 21. After losing a head-to-head fight with new teammate Daniel Ricciardo in qualifying, the 18-year-old ensured he came out on top in the race, producing a mature drive from fourth on the grid. Verstappen withstood huge pressure from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in the latter stages of the race and managed to keep the 2007 world champion, who is twice his age, behind until the chequered flag.

THE Ring of Beara Cycle Kenmare on May 28 is saddling up to be a real family occasion. Following the success of last year’s event, children in national schools from third to sixth class will once again be taking part in a free kid’s cycle around Kenmare Town. This event is run in conjunction with the cycle safety awareness programme running in local national schools on the lead up to the big day.
Joy Clifford, youth officer from Killarney Credit Union, said: “It is crucial to educate children on cycle safety from a young age as they are the cyclists of the future. It is also very important to encourage kids to participate in sport and promote a healthy lifestyle.” Tomás O’Connor, from O’Connor Pyne & Co Accountants, added: “We are delighted to be involved in this great event again. Best of luck to all competitors on the day, and I’m sure they will enjoy the beauty of the area.” The children’s cycle will start at 10am in Kenmare Square and follow a short 2km route around Kenmare town. A team of marshals will supervise the route and ensure the safety of all children who participate. Mums and dads are welcome to join their children in this free fun event. Children participating in the event need to register from 9.15am in the marquee located in Kenmare Square. This event is supported by O’Connor Pyne & Co Accountants and Killarney Credit Union (Kenmare branch).

We remember our Mother, Nanny Noreen And hold you dear within our hearts Now rest in peace dear loved one And thanks for all the good deeds of the past.
You can shed tears that she is gone Or you can smile because she has lived You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her Or you can be full of the love you shared You can turn your back for tomorrow and live yesterday Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday You can remember her and only that she’s gone Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back Or you can do what she’d want Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. As each day dawns we think of you And each night falls we pray for you And throughout our lives No matter where In our hearts you are always there.

Results: Denny Premier A Killarney Athletic 4-3 Camp Despite being 2-0 down Athletic showed fantastic metal to win this game. A superb hat trick by William Courtney and a fine strike by the ever green Rafa secured 3 vital points for the boys in blue. In all a brilliant team display by all involved. U16 Killarney Athletic 1-2 Mastergeeha Athletic u 16s finished their season with a narrow defeat against Mastergeeha on a2 1 scoreline last Thursday. In a game that was to decide the league title and a possible double for
Athletic after they won the shield final the previous Saturday beating Asdee 3 1. However this was a very different game but as on Saturday Athletic went a goal down against the run of play as we missed four or five clear cut chances that we would rue as the game went on. As Athletic had to push forward they were caught on the break while still Playing all the football before pulling one back but could not find the equaliser. Brilliant season overall and thanks to all for the commitment. Denny Division 1A Killarney Athletic B 1-1 Listowel Celtic B. Athletic very disappointed to come away from this with only a point. Athletic set out very early with attack play in mind and had numerous chances but good defending by Listowel and not killing off our chances made it a frustrating night for the boys in blue. A great spirit shown by the group with only 2 league games to play. A good sporting game and we wish a speedy recovery to the Listowel forward who suffered an injury to his wrist. Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s
Club Captain Liam Hartnett was very pleased to see the further progression of two of our Men’s Club teams to the next stages of their respective competitions. The “Jimmy Bruen Team” have made it to the final of the west Munster area, and will face Ceann Sibeal at Killorglin Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon next the 25th of May with the first match out at 4.15pm and Liam is hoping for a good attendance of our members to support the team, the Killarney team, have got to the final by winning three matches over the weekend of 14th and 15th of May, at Kanturk Golf Club by defeating Doneraile in the first round on Saturday morning by a margin of 3 matches to 1 with 1 match called in as the result had been decided, they then went on to meet Bearehaven in the afternoon when they won by a margin of 4 matches to 1, on Sunday morning they played a very fancied home team and they had a nail-biting finish against Kanturk. Killarney’s 1st pairing out with Pat Chawke partnering Darren Mulcahy lost their match 2/1, then James Curran and Donal “Gap” O’Sullivan lost 6/5, but the fight back came when Luke Walsh and Robert Cussen won a tremendous tussle by 2/1, Dermot Roche and Niall McCarthy won 4/3 and then everything depended on the last match, and the Father and Son combination of Tomas Kelliher and Ryan Kelliher prevailed on the 17th green when young Ryan holed a birdie putt to secure a great victory for the Killarney team. In a conversation “après-match” between Sean Duggan and the manager of the Kanturk team the Kanturk manager remarked the they thought that they had a very good team, but that Killarney had a fantastic team. The team featured 15 out of their panel of 16 players over the two days, and the team mentors of Sean Duggan, Johnny O’Connor and Tomas Barry will have a very difficult task with the selection of the team to face Ceann Sibeal in Killorglin on Wednesday next. The J.B. Carr team are in the area final against Waterville, and played the “away” leg of their tie at Waterville on the 13th of May when they won that tie by a margin of 4 matches to 1, Con Healy and John Wall won 1 up, Seamus O’Connor and Donie MacSweeney won 4/3, Enda Curtayne and Dermot Roche won 6/5, Derry O’Connor and Padraig Griffin were beaten on the 20th, and John Hickey and John Clifford won 1 up. Killarney now bring a most important lead when facing their opponents in the home leg which will be played on Friday 27th at the Mahony’s point course in Killarney. The Club singles stroke competition played on Mahony’s Point on Sunday 15th of May results. 1st James Arthur (11) 67 (back nine) 2nd Greg Lanigan (5) 67 3rd John O’Shea (12) 68 4th Paul Murphy (6) 69 5th John O’Donoghue (6) 69

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club
Last Sunday, a day where a trip to the beach seemed more in order , we partook of our annual competition on Caragh Lake for the Josie Bartlett Memorial Cup. Amidst the lovely settings of this lake, anglers battled with the local trout population and when the day was done the top five rods were as follows : 1st Anthony Griffin 2nd Jointly Dermot Mahoney and Willie Maloney 4th Gerry Bambury 5th Billy O’Dea. The heaviest trout on the day came to the rod of Anthony Griffin. Presently the competition for angler of the year has an interesting bunch with a close field, to borrow some racing terminology, of anglers all within a few points of each other. The next senior outing will be in August so some time available for honing the skills and getting some practice in!
Workmen’s Rowing Club
Training News Training continues as usual for all our underage and adults as per coaches texts. Beginners rowing, U14 and U15 takes place at Reen Pier, Ross Castle every Saturday at 10am. For further information regarding Beginners Rowing you can call Mary Burns on 086 8098182. Lee Regatta, The Marina, Cork Last Saturday our rowers competed with spirit and strength at the Lee Regatta, and did themselves and their club proud in the process. Starting with the youngest, the Mens J15 double of Seán Farndon and Marc Woodard rowed strongly to come in a fast 2nd in their final, and later they teamed up with Ross McCarthy and super-sub Ben Hartnett to compete in the final of the quads, coxed by Leona Browne. Seán Farndon had earlier rowed impressively in his final of the single sculls. Well done guys!! Our Womens J16 scullers had a fantastic day. Annie O’Donoghue and Ciara Browne beat off stiff competition from Castleconnell, Shannon and Killorglin to come in first in their final of the Doubles, while later teaming up with Ciara Moynihan and Leona Browne to come in 2nd in their Quad Final, coxed by the one and only Jakub Kunicki. Later both Ciara Moynihan and Annie O’Donoghue competed against each other in their final of the single sculls, both rowing strongly and with very little between them, just outside the medal finish. Meanwhile the Mens J16 rowers were kept busy , with scullers Jakub Kunicki and Ruadhán Mac Curtáin coming in just outside the medals in their respective singles finals. A couple of hours later however, they teamed up in their double and
cruised home to win an impressive first place in their final of the double sculls. They were subsequently joined by Seán Farndon and Marc Woodard in the J16 quad crew, coxed by Leona Browne and came in a fantastic 2nd place in that final. It was up to the older girls then to keep up the momentum…and that they certainly did! Siobhán Burns was a delight to watch, driving home first in her heat of the Womens J18 singles and being just pipped for a medal in the final. Siobhán then teamed up with her cousin Ciara Moynihan in the Club 2 doubles and showed just how it’s done, when they delighted all by coming first in the final. Super stuff girls! Furthermore, Lauren McCarthy had a super race in her Club2 singles final, coming in a fast second and just missing a medal. Well done Lauren! Finally to our older and bolder Mens Club 2 Team. Mikey O’Donoghue and Brendan Joy were in top form last Saturday coming in first in each of their singles heats and competing against each other in the final, with Brendan just beating Mikey O to the medals….a first and a second for the Workmens!! Then came the doubles races for the Club 2’s. Brendan teamed up with Tom O’Leary, and Kamil Kunicki teamed up with Dylan Bartlett. Kamil and Dylan won their heat securing qualification for the final , while Brendan and Tom qualified too. Well done lads on hugely impressive work in your doubles, and on your subsequent participation in the coxed quads final with Ciara Browne as cox. An amazing day was had by all. Thanks to all the coaches and parents and supporters who travelled, and a special word of thanks to Keith Woodard on his stunning photographic record of the day. Upcoming Events This Saturday 21st May we’ll be heading for Castleconnell Regatta, with events over a 500m distance. It’ll be back to the 2km races then in June with the Cork Regatta at the National Rowing Centre, Iniscarra, on 25th and 26th of that month. Next will be the Killarney Regatta at O’Mahony’s Point, followed by one of our major events of the Summer… the Irish Rowing Championships, again at the National Rowing Centre, from 15th to 17th July. ceedings with a training session and match, followed by a medal presentation and party. An hour later, Alberto Mendoza and Pa Murphy’s group, the U8 followed the same schedule and finally Liam Murphy’s U10’s played a match and then enjoyed the party and medal presentation. There was great excitement at each of the medal presentations and the children enjoyed the party where there was no shortage of food thanks to the generosity of the parents who brought goodies along for the party. In his speech, chairman Pa Murphy thanked all present for their hard work over the season, particularly the children who braved all the elements across the year to train with their team mates. He also thankedthe parents for their support and dedication to the club as well asour sponsors for their support. Finally he paid tribute to the hard working coaches for giving their time every Saturday to train the future stars of the club. Cork City Road Trip: We took a bus load of very excited kids and parents to watch Cork City take on Derry City in the Airtricity League at turners Cross last Friday. In all, 40 children and 10 parents witnesses a cracking match, where the home side ran out deserved winners, from fantastic pitch-side seats and under glorious conditions. Following the match, we had a pit-stop at a local eatery and eventually rolled in to Fossa at about 1am. A fantastic trip to Cork for all involved and it was great to enjoy such a road trip as a club. Thanks to Pa and Liam for organising the trip and we will certainly revisit Turner’s Cross in the future!
KiIlarney Celtic
40th Anniversary Commemorations Our Club has a big birthday when it turns 40 this year. To help mark the occasion and to preserve our history for future Killarney Celtic generations, we will shortly be compiling a Digital Archive of club photos, news reports, memorabilia etc. That will require current and past members to rummage out whatever you might have in display cases, old biscuit tins and photo albums. We’ll be publishing more details here and via the press on the project and how you can get us your materials (and get them safely back). Congratulations Congratulations to Celtic stalwart James Hurley and family on the birth of his son Noah Barry Hurley. Congratulations to Marc Kelliher, who has been called into Ireland’s ETP Training Panel. Club Shop Our range of Celtic gear has been updated and is now available from the club shop on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2.00pm. Raffle tickets are €5 each from club members, draw on May 23rd. Support is greatly appreciated.
Training Underage training is now completed for the season. Soccer Tots Our Soccer Tots Programme commences on Wednesday, June 1st, at 7.00pm. All welcome. Results Denny Premier A: Killarney Celtic 3 Tralee Dynamos 2 This was unbelievable stuff, as dramatic as it can possibly get. Celtic, with a very hard-working and controlled display, got on top in the first half and led thanks to a Gary Keane penalty and a superbly executed Peter McCarthy goal. Old rivals Dynamos came back, however, and hauled it back to 2 all. Cekltic pushed on and really dominated the last quarter, creating numerous chances, but we were repeatedly just millimeters away from finishing them. Dynamos were clearly content to settle for a draw at this stage and it looked as if they would get it, but concentration never wavered and in the dying seconds of injury time, Brian Spillane did well to flick on a Jamie Spillane sideline throw towards the back post…. exactly the opportunity that Peter had been waiting on, and he gave the hapless keeper no chance with a superb header to claim the points and the win. Youths League Semi-Final: Killarney Celtic 2 St. Brendans Park 2 Celtic were the better side, but Park held on, battled hard and honest, and earned their draw. Cathal O’Shea and Stephen McCarthy were our goalscorers. U14 Premier: Killarney Celtic 6 St. Brendans Park 2 Park have always been our biggest rivals at this age group, and this duel was absolutely crucial in the title race. It was level at half-time, but Celtic ruled the roost with an amazing team display in the second half. Ruairi Doyle opened our account, with Evan Looney, Ryan O’Grady, Niall McGillicuddy, and James Darmody were all on target for us before man of the match Ruairi closed out the scoring with his second. A minimum draw against Killorglin – an excellent team in their own right in our final game would see us claim the title. Congratulations to U14 player Ruairi Doyle on making the Kerry Schoolboys/ Schoolgirls Team of the Week and on our U14 team on being the Schoolboys Team of the Week. Fixtures Denny Premier: Killarney Celtic at home to Listowel Celtic, Sunday, 11.30am U15 Cup Final: Killarney Celtic v St. Brendans Park B, Saturday, Mounthawk Park, 2.00pm Lotto Numbers drawn 4, 7, 16, 22. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald
SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IS UNDERWAY THE Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship got underway last weekend in brilliant sunshine. As usual, the eight games played were a mixture ranging from the excellent fare served up by the likes of South Kerry and Kerins O’Rahillys to one or two disappointingly one sided games. The club teams, coming off four or five weeks of League and Club Championship action, do of course have a decided advantage in the earlier rounds against their Divisional opponents who for the most part, have little enough time to prepare for the championship. Still, where there’s a will there’s a way and South Kerry management for example confessed to having upwards of ten training sessions in preparation for their opening game – the majority of those in a location in East Kerry! The champions needed all that preparation to dig themselves out of a hole against a very unlucky Kerins O’Rahillys side on Sunday afternoon last in a game that kept the shirt sleeved attendance on tender hooks right up to the final two minutes of additional time played. It was a great advertisement for the championship with excellent skills and sportsmanship on display. Dr Crokes served notice that they are serious contenders for the Bishop Moynihan Cup this year. They routed a West Kerry side that had to lineout without the likes of Marc Ó Sé, Alan Fitzgerald a, Brian Ó Beaglaoich. Austin Stacks, though going through a bad spell with injuries, were also impressive against East Kerry finishing strongly against a young divisional side despite playing without their talisman Kieran Donaghy. Many people fancied Rathmore to reverse the result of the Club Championship meeting between the sides when they took on Dingle in Rathbeg but without the suspended Aidan O’Nahony, it was the visitors who put in a strong second half shift to outpoint the locals. Last year’s beaten finalists, Legion, were another impressive side when showing no mercy to Milltown-Castlemaine in Killorglin and giving new manager Kieran Cronin the perfect Championship start despite being without the recuperating James O’Donoghue. Another East Kerry club side, Kilcummin, gave Mid Kerry plenty of it in Killorglin where Peter Crowley scored a spectacular solo goal to thrill the fine crowd. Mid Kerry are a side that can improve as the year goes on. Kenmare took a long time to get going against St Brendans in the opener at Austin Stack Park on Sunday but once they found their range in the second half they looked pretty impressive. Meanwhile, some shrewd second-half substitutions were key to St Kierans’ narrow victory over a depleted Feale

Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship Round 2 action this weekend
Well the new format has certainly added a new dimension to this year’s Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship. The eight first round winners have been drawn against each other in Round 2A while the eight first round losers have also been drawn against each other in Round 2B. Round 2 A winners advance to the quarter finals while Round 2A losers go forward to Round 3A. Meanwhile, the losers of this weekend’s Round 2B games will exit the competition while the Round 2B winners advance to Round 3B. The four teams in 3A will then be drawn against a team from 3B for a place in the quarter finals. Round 2 continues this weekend with two double bills and four standalone fixtures spread out between Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday there is a double bill in Austin Stack Park where St Brendans get proceedings underway against Rathmore at 4pm followed by the meeting of Kerins O’Rahillys and Feale Rangers at 5.45pm. The losers of thesegames will exit the championship. Also on Saturday there are three standalone fixtures all with a 6.30pm throwin time. St Kierans entertain Dr Crokes in Cordal and in Kenmare there should be fine fare on offer when Kenmare District welcomes Legion. Kilcummin play host to West Kerry with the losers there making an early exit from the county championship. Pride of place on Sunday, and indeed arguably the stand–out fixture of the weekend, is the meeting of the champions of the last two years South Kerry and Austin Stack in Con Keating Park at 2.30pm. The losers here of course will still be in the competition but there will be no such safety net when Milltown-Castlemaine take on East Kerry in the first game of a double bill in Killorglin at 2pm. The second game in the JP O’Sullivan Park should be an exciting one when first round winners Mid Kerry and Dingle meet at 2.30pm knowing that the winners will have secured a quarter-final spot. Extra time will apply in all Round 2 games.Round 3 of the championship will be played on the weekend of July 10.

Dr Crokes
Juvenile Academy The Dr. Crokes pitch was a hive of activity last Saturday morning when Kerins O’Rahilly’s U6s, U8s and U10s Boys and Girls arrived to play Games on a splendid sunny morning. The pitches were in superb condition thanks to Tim O’Sullivan and the Field Committee, under the watchful eye of Der Brosnan. Great fun was had by all with 8 matches taking place at the same time and excitement levels were high by both parents and the Boys and Girls. Much needed refreshments were served to all afterwards, adding to the enjoyment of the day and big thanks to Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club for their courtesy on the day. Big thanks also to the many Dr. Crokes coaches and parents who took charge of teams and helped out on the day. Special thanks also to the juvenile Referees who did an excellent job refereeing the various Games. Training resumes this Saturday and we hope to plan further games in the very near future. All Boys and Girls U.6 to U.10 very welcome each Saturday. County Championship - Round 1 Dr Crokes 5-19 West Kerry 1-9 It’s hard to believe that this game, played in Lewis Road on Saturday last, was level after the end of the first quarter. We ran out easy winners in the end and go into the hat to face the other winners in the second round. Under 12 Phase two of the County League began with an away trip to Listowel for our U12 teams. In division 2A, the black team put in a great gutsy performance but it wasn’t enough as the home side won 5-11 to 4-10. The Amber team continued their winning ways with an impressive 5-21 to 2-6 victory over the Emmets in division 2B. U14 County League Finals The U14 Black and Amber teams were defeated in County League Finals last Wednesday night. Austin Stacks proved too strong for the Black team in the division one decider played in Listry. The Tralee side won by 6-8 to 1-6. In the division 10 final, the Amber team lost by 6-13 to 2-3 to Ballymacelligott in Lewis Road. The club is proud of both teams achievement in reaching their respective county finals. Brighter days in black and amber lie ahead for these talented young players. Under 14 Girls Our under 14’s travelled to Frank
Sheehy Park, Listowel for their latest league fixture. Played in beautiful sunshine, Crokes were slow to find their rhythm but still lead at half-time thanks to goals from Ava Sheehan and Niamh Stack. Treasa O’Sullivan was outstanding on her return to the team and is enjoying her new centre back role. We pushed on in the second half to secure the win with Lyselle O’Shea finishing strongly, helped by a wonderful cameo from Shauna White at corner forward and contributions from all 20 players. We have one more league fixture at home to Castlegregory, currently fixed for 5th June. Golf Society Results for Dooks outing on 14th of May. Legion
COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP A fast start which included a great goal by Jonathan Lyne in the 8th minute set the tone for the rest of the game as the forward line linked up to good effect. Further first half goals by David O Sullivan and Donal Lyne were the by-product of good movement in the forward division prompted by Conor Keane amongst others, as the defence held their opponents to just three points. Peter McCarthy made sure we were first out of the traps in the second half with a fine point and when Jack O’Neill was fouled in the penalty area David O’Sullivan coolly slotted home from the spot. Peter McCarthy stole in for a well-deserved goal halfway through the second half to put the game to bed. The rest of the game saw both sides swap points as both benches were emptied. Conor Culloty made his championship debut and won good possession as we closed the game out.
