DOG OWNERS WARNED BE VIGILANT OF ALGAE SCUM
Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s influence on Italian Professional Golf
KERRY County Council is reminding the public and dog-owners in particular to remain vigilant along parts of the shoreline of Lough Leane in Killarney where an algal scum was identified last week. Samples from the material in recent days have not shown any worsening of the situation. Most of the algae detected are of a harmless variety. The council is continuing to urge caution however as the algae can be harmful particularly to dogs. The main locations at which the algal scum is present are close to Muckross Abbey and at Bunrower and Castlelough, Fossa. People are advised to exercise due caution and not to swim at or in the immediate vicinity of algal scums as it can cause skin irritation to swimmers. The algal scum is confined to the shoreline and the water quality in Lough Leane is currently very good. The situation is being monitored on a daily basis. Advisory signs remain in place advising that from May to September algal scums can form due to prevailing weather conditions.
ITALIAN golfer Roberto Bernardini – Turned Professional in 1961 and is arguably Italy’s first high profile golfer – followed later by such names as Constantino Rocca, Edoardo & Francesco Molinari and more recently Matteo Manassero. In the 1960’s and 70’s he represented Italy nine times at the Golf World Cup and achieved two top twenty finishes in the British Open (17th in 1970 and 13th in 1972). During the late 1950’s he was a caddie at the Rome Golf Club and his most regular client throughout his career as a caddie was none other than Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty. During the recent O’Flaherty Tour to Rome, the group met with Roberto at the Rome Golf Club, where at the age of 72 he continues to coach at the Club Golf Academy. To mark his long association with Monsignor Hugh, the Memorial Society presented him with one of the Monsignor’s recently re-discovered and restored golf Michael O'Donoghue presents one of Hugh clubs - a Burke Punchiron No 8, dating back O'Flaherty's golf clubs to Roberto to the mid-1930’s. The club was mounted on Bernardini at Rome Golf Club last month. a backboard with photos showing the Monsignor playing in Rome with three times British Open Champion Henry Cotton. Jerry O’Grady of the Memorial Society said, “As soon as we stepped off the coach and Roberto saw the large photo of the Monsignor with his unique grip, he smiled broadly and referred in Italian to his memory of that very unusual golf grip”. “He was very appreciative of the presentation of the club and said he would treasure it always, - however, he wished it had been the No 1 iron, as he recalled that throughout his professional career, he has never witnessed anyone who could drive a No 1 iron as straight and as long as the Monsignor” Jerry added.

Question I do night work regularly but I am expecting a baby in six months. Can I stop working at night while I am pregnant?

Answer Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, every employer is required to carry out a risk assessment for the workplace. This assessment should identify hazards in the workplace, assess the risks from such hazards and identify the steps to be taken to deal with any risks. Now that you are pregnant, your employer should carry out a separate risk assessment for you. If there are particular risks to you during your pregnancy, these should be either removed or you should be moved away from them. If neither of these options is possible, you should be given health and safety leave from work, which may continue up the beginning of your maternity leave (under the Maternity Protection Acts 1994 and 2004). If a doctor certifies that night work is unsuitable for you during your pregnancy, you must be given alternative work or health and safety leave. Time spent on health and safety leave is treated as though you have been in employment, and this time can be used to accumulate annual leave entitlement. You are not entitled to leave for any public holidays that occur during health and safety leave. During health and safety leave, your employer must pay you your normal wages for the first 21 days (3 weeks), after which you may qualify for Health and Safety Benefit from the Department of Social Protection. -When you return to work after maternity leave, if there is any risk to you because you have recently given birth or are breastfeeding, that risk should be removed. If this is not possible, you should be moved to alternative work. If it is not possible for you to be assigned alternative work, you should be given health and safety leave. If night work is certified by a doctor as being unsuitable after the birth, alternative work should be provided. If alternative work cannot be provided, you should be given health and safety leave.

Kerry live register down over 37% KERRY Fine Gael TD, Brendan Griffin, has said that a drop of 37.86% in the Live Register in the county since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in early 2012, is a strong indication that Fine Gael is continuing to deliver on its pledge to prioritise job creation and reduce unemployment. “The annual decline in Brendan Griffin, TD. the Live Register from May 2015 to May 2016, in Kerry was 1586, while the drop since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in February 2012 is now 6,526, a drop of 37.86%, the best figure for any county in Ireland. “Unemployment has decreased in every region of the country in the last 12 months. 155,000 new jobs have been created since the Action Plan for Jobs was launched in early 2012 and the Programme for Government has reaffirmed the Action Plan for Jobs as the best way to implement ideas on job creation across Government. With 15,400 new jobs created in the first three months of 2016 we are off to a great start in meeting Fine Gael’s target of 200,000 new jobs by 2020. “Each new job created in Kerry is not just a number but a real person and family with a brighter future. The latest jobs figures are also indicative of returning confidence and growth in the business community in Kerry. Each job created also means more revenue for vital public services and investment such as health, roads and education. "Amongst actions that we now need to see are accelerated investment in Kerry's vital infrastructure such as broadband and major roads, continued and better business supports across all industries, including agriculture, tourism, construction, retail and fishing, progress on new FDI and continued nurturing of indigenous and established organisations, better statistical data such as numbers on people at work in Kerry and the removal of barriers to education and self-improvement at all levels,"said Griffin TD.

Orla Benson Postgraduate Research Scholarship supports research in heart related research

THIS year’s Orla Benson Postgraduate Research Scholarship has been awarded to Mariana Di Luca, a researcher in DCU’s Vascular Biology and Therapeutics Group; to further her research into identifying the type of cells most common in causing heart disease. This would further enable the development of new treatments that could enable the prevention of fatal heart attacks and strokes. The annual scholarship, worth €2,500, was established in memory of Orla Benson, a DCU Biotechnology student from Killarney, who was tragically killed in Boston in September 1995. Speaking on receiving the award, Mariana said, “With the help of the Orla Benson Postgraduate Research Scholarship, I will be able to finish a large portion of my Ph.D. in Carolina’s lab in Argentina. Since I came to Ireland, every single success and opportunity I have had is down to the generosity of people like the Benson family. The Orla Benson Postgraduate Research Scholarship will not only have a huge impact on my Ph.D. but will also allow me to honour Orla, for that I am very grateful.” The Benson family has worked with the DCU Educational Trust to establish the scholarship as a legacy to their daughter’s dedication to and love of biotechnology. To date, the Orla Benson Memorial Endowment Fund has provided scholarships for fifteen students.

IRELAND South MEP, Seán Kelly, has been appointed to the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the United States. This is Mr Kelly's second term serving on the Delegation, as he represented the EU Parliament in talks with the US during his previous term of office. "I am delighted to be re-appointed to the EU Delegation for Relations with the US. Given ongoing EU-US trade talks on a potential Transatlantic agreement, and various other issues that concern both world powers such as data protection, the digital agenda and much more, it is vital that the views of European citizens are represented. That's exactly the aim of this Delegation of MEPs, as elected representatives of EU citizens," Mr Kelly said in Strasbourg on Wednesday. "It is especially important that Ireland has a strong representation on the EU-US delegation due to our close and historical relationship with the States, and the many

millions of those who live in the States but claim Irish ancestry. The US is also Ireland's main non-EU export destination accounting for a quarter of our trade in goods by March of this year. "EU-wide, the United States accounted for €619 billion or 18 percent of total EU trade in goods in 2015," Mr Kelly added. MEP Kelly, the Leader of the Fine Gael delegation in the European Parliament has attended many high-level meetings with US lawmakers in Washington and in Europe in his capacity on the delegation during his previous term.

TIPS ON HOW BEST TO MANAGE IN EXAMS Niamh Dwyer shares her tips on how best to manage your time and prepare during exam time
Time Management and Revision AT this stage study in segments of 30 mins and focus on keynotes by using mind-maps, graphic organisers, post-it notes, flash cards, bullet points etc to retain the most important information. Always end the session by looking at the exam papers for a question on the topic you have revised. Check out www.studyclix.ie for exam questions and solutions by topic in all subjects.
Exam Timetable, Paper Layout and Timing
Junior Cert Students Alina Sarokina, Laura Whelton, Vanessa Gallivan, Clodagh Kearney and teacher Ms. Joan Morrissey review the Higher Level English Paper one.
Download a copy of the timetable for the exams from www.examinations.ie, highlight the dates and times of your own exams and hang it up on the fridge so everyone knows your schedule over the exam period. Ensure that you arrive in plenty time for each exam. Make sure you are familiar with the layout of the papers for each subject you are doing. Know the compulsory sections and be clear on the optional sections. Decide ahead of time which sections you are going to do first. In the exam itself try to stick the time plan as much as possible to ensure that you get all the paper completed.
Rest and Relaxation Try to get a proper night’s sleep in the run up to each exam as your brain needs time to rest. Factor in some time to relax and unwind as it is a very stressful time.
Diet, Fresh air and Exercise Eat healthy food in the run up to and during the exams, limit your intake of caffeine and high sugar foods. Drink plenty water. Get some fresh air and physical exercise everyday as both are fantastic for burning off and reducing stress.
Keep some perspective
Leaving Cert Students Emma Cantillon, Jennifer Murphy, Eilish O' Leary, Karen Parker, Jessica O' Sullvian and Isabelle Corridan, St Brigid's Presentation, Killarney reviewing their English paper.
While these exams are important and you have worked hard for them remember they are not a measure of your worth and they certainly will not define you as a person. Give them your best shot on each day and look forward to a well-earned break when they are over. There is a path for everyone and remember there is a life after Leaving or Junior Cert.

The group Flew to Geneva and toured in the region to visit the amazing castle of chateau Saint Bernard, tasted the local cheese, enjoyed wine tasting of course and visited the chic spa resort of Aix Les Bains. Deputy Healy-Rae speaks about seeking accountability in the Department of Health "I WISH Deputy Simon Harris the very best in his new role as Minister for Health. I ask him to take charge of all aspects of health to ensure that there is accountability in our health service. I think back over the years and my time as a member of Kerry County Council and it seems to me that former Ministers for Health were not really accountable for health at all. They threw it back to the HSE. In reply to any question asked in the Dáil, a Minister would say he or she would refer it to the HSE. If one was at the HSE forum in the County Hall in Cork and asked the HSE to account for something, it would refer it back to the Department. The buck needs to stop with somebody. I ask the new Minister, who is a fit young man himself, to take charge of the Department of Health to ensure that the service is properly run and overseen," said Deputy Healy-Rae. Turning to mental health, a new unit has been built at Deer Lodge on St Margaret's Road in Killarney. It has been completely finished for almost 12 months but there are no staff available for it. Sadly, close to my home in Kerry, four people have committed suicide. I am not saying the opening of this unit would have prevented that but the unit has been built for a purpose and is not serving one as long as it remains unopened. I ask the new Minister to address that issue immediately because the unit in Killarney is needed by all of the people in Kerry.

The old coach road to Kenmare by Nicky Barry
BAD NEIGHBOURS 2 A REASONABLY funny effort, 2014's Bad Neighbours featured Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Dave Franco and Zac Efron leading the charge. The premise was as simple then as it is now. Rogen and Byrne are a married couple with a second child on the way who have managed to sell their home. With the house beside them empty of a fraternity, life's returned to a degree of normality. Newcomer Chloe Moretz has just joined the local college and, after seeing what life is like with the current sororities –decides to set up her own with the help of Beanie Feldstein and Kiersey Clemons. Zac Efron, meanwhile, feels increasingly devalued as Dave Franco is now engaged and wants him to move out. Turning up at his old frat house, he meets Moretz and co. and agrees to help them set up their sorority and mentor them. Efron's return, of course, is noticed by Rogen and Byrne and so the story begins.

Of all the roads in Kerry there’s none that can compare, With the old coach road that rambles from Killarney to Kenmare. It starts behind Torc Mountain in a valley wide and green, And twists and turns through heather to the town of Sweet Neidin. In days of yore a coach and four wound through this wild terrain, With lords and ladies all decked out with golden rings and chains. The lurking rapparees betimes fared well upon this track, If they missed the gentry going, they met them coming back! If you let your mind go back in time, and ponder fickle glory, You’ll live again another age in Kerry’s passing story. As you muse you’ll hear hooves clatter, and the rattle of the wheels, The crack of whip on horse hide, past donkeys with turf creels. The silence and serenity is enhanced by humming bees, Whilst deer and sheep graze languidly ‘mongst heather and green leas. Mountain streams and cascades dance and gurgle with delight, And cold would be the human heart unmoved by such a sight. Old stone walls still stand there where farmers once drove ploughs, And goats and geese and chickens scratched and foraged with the cows. Praties grew in ridges, and cabbages in drills, In Spartan mountain holdings high in the Kerry hills. The whistling thatcher on the roof, and the children singing songs, Still echo, if you listen, and let your heart strings play along In harmony with nature, and the whisper of the breeze, As you ramble glades of Eden that set your soul at ease. There’s history in the sandstone slabs laid down in Ullaun’s Wood, When famished men with picks and spades hacked out this mountain road. It’s a testament to spirit, and the pure will to survive, Ere coffin ships left Blennerville, and a generation died. Through Friar’s Glen, and Poulagower, and Esknamucky Glen, Past Ferta Fields and Cullinagh, through vale and dale and fen. By Crinnagh and Doogary, and the Glans of Barnasnaw, The homesteads on the highway are all now sadly gone. So muster up your cronies folks, pack victuals and fine wine, And hit the road to Sweet Neidin on a journey back in time. You never will forget it, if you live a hundred years, It will mitigate your heartaches, and all your cares and fears. It’s all now a folk memory, when hunger plagued the land, And the hardy eked a living with the meitheal’s helping hand, To fight the blight of penury, the Famine and the Crown, And keep Kerry hearts aflame with hope in the Kingdom of renown.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
Luke 7:36–50 The Reign of God which Jesus came to proclaim is marked by an inclusive love, a love which reaches beyond traditional bigotry and prejudice. When have you seen that kind of inclusive love in another? When have you been able to reach beyond your own instinctive prejudices? What was it like for you to be able to do this? Perhaps you have had the contrasting experiences of being excluded because of prejudice, and of being accepted despite perceived difference. What were the effects on you in each case? What does this teach you about life-giving behaviour? Jesus gave the woman an experience of being accepted as she was, despite her sinfulness. When have you had the experience of being accepted by another, warts and all? When have you been able to give that experience to another? Forgiveness is one of the characteristics of the Reign of God announced by Jesus. When have you experienced the life-giving effects of forgiveness given or received? John Byrne OSA
MUSINGS The one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.’ (Lk 7:47) How come there was a woman at the Pharisee’s house? How did a woman of ‘ill-repute’ get in? It would have been unusual to have a woman at such a gathering. Even more so at the home of this particular Pharisee who seems to be haughty, arrogant. It merits investigation. It would appear that the Pharisee is self-opinionated and liked to rub shoulders with people who were popular or who were seen as celebrities. Jesus was making a name for himself as a teacher and preacher. Hence, the invitation to dinner. The woman must have slipped in with the crowd. The Pharisee could not humble himself, nor had he the manners to afford Jesus, his guest, the customary etiquette. Visitors were usually greeted with a kiss of peace, had their feet washed and their head anointed with oil or sweet-smelling incense. The Pharisee, who is named as Simon, was so self-preoccupied that he was above showing any kind of welcome or love. The woman, on the other hand, who knew her need of mercy and love, let her love be shown. I suppose we could say that Simon was guilty of the greatest sin of all; no sense of sin! Or, as Pope Francis expresses it in Misericordiae Vultus, he has not recognised yet the grace that he, too, is a sinner. Fr Iomar Daniels St Andrew’s Church, Leitrim, Loughrea, Co Galway
The Deep End - ‘Celebrate Mercy’ n today’s Gospel, Jesus is invited to Simon the Pharisee’s house for dinner when an ‘unwanted’ guest arrives. This woman has a bad reputation in the town; we are told nothing of her past except that she was a sinner and that she is carrying something that she wants to be free from. There are many things to say about the text but perhaps today we can focus on her celebration. The woman is able to receive God’s grace in contrast to the Pharisee who is unable to grasp what has happened. Those present find it difficult to comprehend a God who accepts sinners and they are also finding it difficult to accept someone who celebrates forgiveness so joyfully and extravagantly as this woman does. Often, when we receive forgiveness from others, we are unable to forgive ourselves, unable to free ourselves from our own mistakes. We can take a good example from the woman in today’s Gospel who celebrates abundantly when she is freed from whatever it was that she was carrying. The last lines of the Gospel remind us of the prominent role of ‘many’ women who covered the expenses of Jesus and the twelve and journeyed with them. God’s mercy can make even the driest land become a garden, can restore life to dry bone s... Let us be renewed by God’s mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth. Pope Francis Jane Mellett

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Developments within The Irish Heart Foundation Helpline I AM writing to let readers of the Killarney Advertiser know of some important developments taking place at the Irish Heart Foundation's National Heart & Stroke Helpline. Firstly, the number for the service is changing and the Helpline will also now be free of charge from landlines or mobiles, anywhere in the country. The new number is Freefone 1800 25 25 50. Secondly, the service will have extended daily opening hours and evening opening, with the Helpline now open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and on Thursday evenings until 7pm. We hope to extend evening opening even further later in the year. Thirdly, we are providing additional avenues to communicate with the Helpline, with a new dedicated direct access email—helpline@irishheart.ie. We also intend to launch an online Nurse Live Chat service later in the year. The helpline is staffed by specialist nurses and so readers can be as-
sured of expert one-to-one advice and support, in full confidence. It is important to recognise that these developments would not be possible without the generous backing of Life Pharmacy, and this support is gratefully acknowledged. Every day, approximately 300 new cases of heart disease and stroke are diagnosed in Ireland. Sadly, on average, 27 people lose their lives. Almost two-thirds of middle aged and older adults have two of the big three risk factors for heart disease and stroke—high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity. Almost all have at least one. The good news is that 80% of stroke and heart disease is preventable. If you're worried about your heart and stroke health, don't delay. Call the Helpline today on Freefone 1800 25 25 50. Tobacco free issue highlighted KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL member John Sheahan has highlighted the distress that can be felt by some as a result of a tobacco-free environment when he raised the matter with the Health Service Executive. The National HSE Tobacco Free Policy outlines, that all healthcare facilities will be tobacco free, as of January of this year. “For those who smoke, while presenting some challenges the evidence is that where such a policy has been implemented previously such as in the U.K. (from 2006 onwards) that with the support of Smoking Cessation staff, the widespread availability of nicotine replacement therapy and the promotion of a tobacco free environment this is an achievable plan,” said Gretta Crowley, operations manager, Cork and Kerry Mental Health Services. “The principle concerns voiced in opposition are that it is an infringement of the smoker’s right to choose themselves and furthermore that in an acute mental health setting it will result in an increase in distress for patients and potential increase in aggression towards staff or other patients. “The available evidence demonstrates that these understandable concerns can be managed and that the introduction of a tobacco free environment in mental health settings does not result in an overall increase in incidents of an aggressive or threatening nature. In addition with regard to an individual’s rights it has been established that an individual does not have in such settings an automatic right to smoke. In fact it has been established that patients and staff have a right to an environment which will not harm their health via passive smoking.” In line with the HSE National Tobacco Free Policy to achieve smoke free Mental Health facilities for staff and service users, Kerry Mental Health Services established a Smoke Free Implementation group in July 2015. The national policy aims to achieve 100% compliance in all its Mental Health Approved Centres by end 2016, with 25% of HSE residences by January 2016.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +
ON THE AIRWAVES
AT HOME Two men rescued from sinking boat off Cork coast Two men were rescued at sea yesterday morning by Castletownbere's RNLI. Castletownbere’s RNLI all weather lifeboat was launched to go to the assistance of a fishing vessel which was reported sinking eleven miles south west of Dursey Island on the Beara peninsula.
KEEP CHILDREN SAFE
Distracted parents are putting their children at risk by being obsessed with mobile phones, a senior paediatrician has warned. People are running the risk of being involved in a "nasty accident" if they refuse to curb their smartphone addiction, said Dr Rahul Chodarhi, after new research found almost a quarter of parents have been engrossed in their devices when their children have had an accident or a near miss. The study, carried out by the Child Accident Prevention Trust found the behaviour was rubbing off on children, with 15% of youngsters having been involved in accidents or near misses such as stepping into the road without looking when on their smartphone. Recently released data found two-thirds of Britons own a smartphone, with one in three checking the device within five minutes of waking up. Dr Chodarhi, from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: "Accidents often happen when we're distracted and mobile phones are increasingly to blame - whether it's a teenager stepping out into traffic while instant messaging or a baby grabbing at a hot drink or biting into a liquitab while their parent is replying to a text. It only takes a split second for an accident to happen so I urge parents and young people to adapt their behaviour." The research, which polled 1,000 parents of young children, comes during Child Safety Week. Families are urged to switch off phones at "pressure points during the day" to keep children safer. Chief executive at the Child Accident Prevention Trust, Katrina Phillips, said: "Mobile phones are a godsend for parents under pressure - we can do the shopping, keep in touch with friends and family, and keep our children entertained. But while we're mesmerised by our mobiles, we're putting children in danger. Serious accidents happen in seconds, often while we're distracted, and mobiles are seriously distracting." Ms Phillips added: "That's why we're encouraging families to turn off technology at pressure points during the day, to help keep children safe."
The naval vessel LE Orla and the Coastguard’s Rescue 115 helicopter were also tasked. The lifeboat was on scene at 5:50am and found two fisherman in a liferaft. The men, both in their 40s, were taken aboard the lifeboat and were reported to be safe and well. Speaking following the call out, Paul Stevens, Castletownbere RNLI Volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer said: "Fortunately the weather conditions were favourable early yesterday morning and we were able to quickly transfer the two fishermen into the safety of the lifeboat. Both are safe and well. "They did the right thing and raised the alarm when they got into difficulty. ‘Yesterday morning’s call out came as the RNLI prepared to launch its Respect the Water campaign today. The sea is wonderful but it is also powerful and unpredictable and people need to treat it with respect." Respect the Water aims to highlight the risk of accidental drowning when people are near the coastline by encouraging safer behaviour both in and around the water. The campaign is primarily aimed at males aged between 16 and 39 but the same advice is relevant for anyone visiting the coast. Coastal fatality figures released by the RNLI show that an average of 23 people die through accidental drowning around the coast of the Republic of Ireland each year. The charity is asking people to visit RNLI. org/RespectTheWater where they will find information on coastal hazards, how to keep themselves safe, and what to do should they someone else end up in trouble in the water.

NEW POLITICS, OLD TRICKS... There isn’t anything new in the arrangements made between Fine Gael & the Independent Alliance. It would seem most of the time spent discussing the formation of the government was spent on what exactly the members of the Independent Alliance needed to give their backing to Enda’s push for fame. Likewise, the appointment of two of his senators from his own constituency seems to indicate that Enda is watching his back rather than engaging in the much talked-about New Politics. It seems we’re in for much more of the same old wheeling & dealing. It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks. It seems the Independent Alliance want to have it both ways. During the negotiations leading to the formation of the government a clause was inserted in the programme for government, at their behest, which ensures its group receives €2.5m in state funding over the lifetime of the Dáil. The programme proposes to give the same state funding to political groups who stood on a common policy platform in the general election, as political parties. As it stands, the Independent Alliance is not a registered political party & is only entitled to the Leader’s Allowance of €37,037 for each of its six T.D.s. If the Alliance is treated as a political party, it will receive €64,368 for each of its six TDs. It would also receive €207,000 per annum based on its performance in the general election plus a fixed sum of €126,973. The changes would bring an extra €500,000 a year more in state funding. That would amount to €2.5m if the Dáil runs its full term. On top of that, all but one of its members was promoted to minister or junior minister. It’s no wonder the negotiations dragged on so long: these boys had a long shopping list. And yet, they say they need this money for the Alliance to grow. They need the money to run the organisation, to fund campaigns and to run councillors in the next local elections. So they want parity with political parties; they want an organisation which will probably need offices & they want to field candidates nationwide and they still want to be regarded as ‘Independents.’ And, of course it’s your money.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD TOO HIGH A COST Investors are moving billions of pounds in assets out of British currency and assets ahead of the European Union referendum, new figures suggest. Around £65bn left the UK or was converted into other currencies in March and April, the largest amount since the economic crash. In the six months to the end of April, £77bn was pulled out of British pounds, compared to just £2bn in the six months to the end of last October. The figures, published by the Bank of England, are consistent with investors worrying that the pound is due for a sharp fall should Brexit to occur. Because financial markets are prone to collective panic, investors’ views are the main factor in determining whether the pound will actually fall. Any perception that a fall was about to take place could end up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. In February, HSBC warned that 20 per cent could be wiped off the value of sterling were Britain to leave the EU. In May this figure was corroborated by the National Institute for Economic and Social Research. The pound plunged to a three-week low yesterday, probably partly in response to polls showing the Leave campaigning ahead. It hit a seven-year low against the dollar the day after the former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced he was backing Brexit, and also suffered the biggest one-day fall since David Cameron become Prime Minister. The collapse of the pound at the end of June would mean Britons going abroad during the summer would have their spending power reduced. Imported goods such as electronics would also likely become significantly more expensive. British exports and inward tourism would become cheaper to the rest of the world, however. A series of leading economic organisations have warned that Brexit could have a highly negative impact on the British economy.
BREAKING
NEWS Green Army urged to be wary fake ticket scams An estimated 10,000 ticketless Irish fans have been warned to be wary of forged Euro 2016 match passes. Uefa and football federations in the 24 participating countries have warned fans not to buy tickets from unofficial outlets - and to be extremely vigilant for forgeries if, in their desperation to get match tickets, they resort to touts or internet purchases. The warning came as the Irish team flew to France for the country's third European Championship adventure.
Maria Sharapova handed two-year ban from tennis for failed drugs test FORMER WORLD NUMBER one Maria Sharapova has been handed a two-year suspension by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for committing an anti-doping violation. Sharapova was provisionally banned by the ITF in March after testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open. The 29-year-old will be suspended until 26 January 2018 after an independent tribunal delivered its ruling this afternoon. The ban is backdated to 26 January 2016, rendering Sharapova ineligible to compete for the next 18 months. Shortly after the the ITF’s announcement, Sharapova released a statement on her Facebook page, revealing she would appeal the ‘unfairly harsh’ suspension. The Russian claims the ITF asked the tribunal to suspend her for four years, the length handed to players found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs. With their decision of a two year suspension, the ITF tribunal unanimously concluded that what she did was not intentional.

WHY BMW SELECT AT AHERNS IS YOUR BEST ROUTE TO A NEW BMW IN 2016 BMW’S financial services division offers conventional hire purchase over two, three, four and five years, and its own PCP product with BMW Select, which is still unique in the market as it is available on every car across the BMW range. BMW Financial Services have a variety of deals at the moment, and a visit to Aherns at Tralee Road, Castleisland, is the best way to find the deal that suits you best, a perfect example being the new BMW 1 Series with an APR as low as just 5.9% on Select. So how does Select work? You the customer decide on the BMW of your choice, you decide on the repayment period that’s right for your needs (either 24, 36 or 48 months). “We agree on the maximum annual kilometers that will be sufficient for your needs. BMW Financial Services then provide a guaranteed minimum future value for the specific model BMW,” said a spokesman. “This becomes the final payment. You agree a regular payment to suit your budget. Typically you will pay a deposit of between 10% and 30% and the agreement begins. At the end of the agreement, you choose the option that suits you best.” You can also part-exchange your car. “If you would like another BMW, all you do is part- exchange your car at Aherns. Any surplus value over the guaranteed minimum future value goes towards the next BMW as a deposit,” added the spokesman. If you wish to hold on to your BMW, simply pay the guaranteed minimum future value plus a small purchase instalment fee (€75) and the car is yours. If you decide against options one and two you can, once you have satisfied the terms of the finance agreement, return the car to Aherns, and as long as the BMW is in good condition and you haven’t exceeded the agreed kilometres, there’s nothing more to pay. BMW Select offers total peace of mind, and gives you the customer total protection should values drop for whatever reason. Some terms and conditions apply, and Aherns will have an expert on hand to explain all the options. Call 066-7143000 to get a quote on an option that may suit you best.

The New 'Top Gear' Lost A Third Of Its Audience In Only Its Second Episode Could the honeymoon really be over that quickly?
After viewing the second episode, I have to admit that progress was made, however viewers didn’t seem to feel the same way. The problem is not having a clear defined personality driving the show, a personality that can get the best from its cohosts and vice versa. That chemistry is not there and it is difficult to see this changing. Social media has already presented a replacement to
Evans in the form of Jenson Button, McLaren F1 driver who appeared in episode 2. For me that segment with Jenson Button demonstrating a McLaren supercar around the test track saved the show. Evans looked frightened in the car. ‘Get a grip man, you are in an exclusive car with a F1 world champion in a controlled environ-
ment, enjoy the experience - after all he is a professional driver’ but Evans looks like he needed a change of underwear after the segment.
to the BBC the old trio pulled 6.41 million and 6.56 million viewers for each of the previous season’s two episodes.
Back to the nuts and bolts: the show’s viewership dropped 1.6 million from the first episode to the second, settling in at 2.8 million viewers. A 36% drop from the 4.4 million people who tuned in to see how Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc would do at the helm in their first go.
The BBC are confident that Evans and his hosts can make things work over time but those Clarkson-powered numbers may be forever out of reach. We may have to adjust expectations! The real measuring stick will come once "The Grand Tour" makes its debut.
Evans, who tweeted about the ratings last week, was once again on the offensive after the figures for the second episode were released. He said the overnight viewing figures for the show have “never been less relevant,” referring to the amount of people who choose to either record the show or stream it on-demand. While these figures may be slightly irrelevant overall they are highly relevant when compared to the amount of people who tuned in to watch “Top Gear” when Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond were hosting. According
Of course the show will be on a streaming service so it won't be possible to compare live viewing numbers. But that being said it will be interesting to see how the two shows do in terms of streams, a segment Chris Evans seems to believe is one of his show's strengths.

ŠKODA Ireland has announced it will introduce a new 1.0TSI petrol engine in their Octavia model this July. Not only will this be the first time a three-cylinder engine will be used in the Octavia; ŠKODA will be the first brand in the Volkswagen Group to launch this particular engine on the MQB platform. Turbo charging will result in a healthy 115bhp power output from this unit. Exact figures have yet to be confirmed however significant improvements in fuel efficiency and emission outputs are expected when compared to the outgoing 1.2TSI engine. Škoda has an impressive history of being early adopters of low capacity, high output petrol engines
52
with the introduction of their first 1.0 petrol engines in 1997. Following on from this, ŠKODA then introduced TSI (Turbo Stratified Injection) technology in 2009 with its 1.2TSI petrol engine. Cathal Kealey, PR Manager at ŠKODA Ireland, said, “There is still a perception out there among motorists that engines need to be of a certain size in relation to the body size. Things have changed significantly in the last number of years. For example the new 1.0 TSI engine produces the same power output as the range topping 2.0 litre petrol engine that was fitted to the original Octavia back in 1998. The Octavia therefore develops the same power from an engine half the size.”

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s
Club President Arthur Hanley, was present at the Clubhouse to meet and greet all of the competitors in both the Ladies and Men’s Clubs competitions on Saturday and Sunday last, the 4th and 5th of June for the staging of this year’s various “President’s Prizes” to both of the respective Clubs, and all were rewarded with splendid weather over the entire weekend. The Men’s competition was played on Killeen course, and many of those who played considered that the pin placings on some of the greens were indeed very difficult, which greatly inhibited the potential of many of those competitors from recording better scores than they actually returned. The Men’s competition attracted an entry of 260 competitors, and only 16 of those who played recorded better than level par scores, so anyone who was amongst that group were indeed deemed to have played a very good game of golf. The competition was won by Derry McCarthy with a magnificent score of 6 up, and that score proved to have been of such a calibre that Eugene O’Sullivan who was
in second place was two back at 4 up. Derry played one of the great rounds of his long and illustrious golfing life, and he was actually around in two under par gross, after getting off to a flying start when he stood at 4 under par after 8 holes. Club Captain Liam Hartnett commenced the formal proceedings with a brief resume of Arthur’s career his family and golfing life, and Liam welcomed Arthur’s family, his beloved wife of 50 years, Patsy, who is the current ex-officio Lady Captain, and two of their Daughter’s Deirdre and Barbara, and their son Stephen, and Liam advised that Arthur’s and Patsy’s 50th wedding anniversary was coinciding with the President’s prize on the exact same weekend. Lady Captain, Mary O’Rourke followed with a brief appreciation on behalf of the Ladies Club. President Arthur then followed on with an amusing and entertaining speech during which Arthur paid credit to many of those who had helped out in any way towards making the weekend such a tremendous success and this was followed up with the prize presentations, of all of the competitions, and it was good to see Arthur’s son Stephen well up amongst the prize-winners. The Men’s competition results are as follows. 1st Derry McCarthy (6) 6 up, 2nd Eugene O’Sullivan (5) 4 up, 3rd Greg Murphy (7) 3 up, Best gross Donal Considine (2) 70 4th Stephen Hanley (12) 3 up, 5th Liam Healy (12) 2 up, Standard Scratch fell at level par. The Club’s J.B. Carr team were in action on Friday the 3rd of June when they played against Ennis in the home leg of their tie. Nick O’Brien who is one of the joint team managers was called upon to fill a vacancy after there was a last minute withdrawal from the team. Nick went on to prove to have been a most effective replacement on the team when he holed his pitch in to the 15th green from 90 yards to win his match by a margin of 5/3. The results were as follows, Match 1, John Hickey and John Clifford won 2/1. Match 2, Seamus O’Connor and Donie McSweeney lost 1 down. Match 3, Dermot Roche and Enda Curtayne won 2/1. Match 4 Nick O’Brien and Padraig Griffin won 5/3. Match 5 Con Healy and John Wall lost 6/5. Killarney will now take a most slender lead of 3 matches to 2 matches when they will travel for the “away” leg of the tie to be played at Ennis, the date has yet to be finalised. The next Men’s Club competition will be on Sunday the 12th of June, will be the “exchange day” at Tralee Golf Club. Club Captain Liam Hartnett, on behalf of the entire club wishes to pass on sincere condolences to Club Member Brian Clarke and to all of the Clarke family on the recent passing of Brian’s Brother Dessie at a very young age.

All the children that did take part enjoyed the atmosphere and talking to customers..There was a great buzz around, especially with the bikefest being held in Killarney that day.. thanks again to all involved.. U10 Mixed Football County Finals took part on Bank Holiday Monday in Tralee. 14 teams took part and our team were drawn to play in Connolly Park. We were drawn to play Duagh Lyre in our first round game. It ended up in victory for our players by one single point, which gave us a great start. We went on to meet An Gaeltacht in the next game. This was a tough battle against a strong team but we were with them all the way on scores, until 2 late goals in the second half sealed our fate. Our boys and girls played extremely well on the day and we are very proud of each and everyone of them. We would also like to thank their trainers, Arthur Moynihan and Owen O’Leary who trained the team and prepared the players for the finals: Athletics: We would like to wish all our children that are participating in the Athletics County Finals this weekend, in An Riocht, Castleisland, the very best of luck. We will be following the progress on our facebook page and we will post the results as they arrive in. Hopefully the good weather will continue and make this day , as enjoyable as ever. This was yet again a solid team performance who responded well to being put under pressure, they play Ballymac away next Saturday evening at 7pm in Round 5 of the county league. Boys Under 14 East Kerry League Fossa took charge early on in their game against Beaufort and ran out comfortable winners in the end. There were fine performances throughout the pitch, in particular from Ruairi Doyle, Emmet O’Shea and the Talbots, Padraig and Colm. And there was another fine performance from Darren Cronin in his new position at full forward. Final score Fossa 8-14 Beaufort 6-03 Boys U12 County League Division 1A and 1B Glenflesk were the visitors for the under 12s on Sunday evening and both matches served up close affairs with Fossa coming out on top in one and the honours shared in the other. The Fossa under 12 black side got off to the worst start possible going behind 3-01 to no score. Heart and
determination however saw the Fossa boys pull off a great victory by the slimmest of margins. On the night both teams played a lovely brand of football with great tackling and scoring. There was a man of the match performance from Cian Doyle who was helped by Patrick Lyons, Harry Kelly and Ryan O’Leary. There was another fine performance from the defence and midfield before the forwards eventually got motoring. Well done to all the boys. Final score Fossa 4-10 Glenflesk 4-09. On a perfect night for football an unbeaten Glenflesk team were in town and the Fossa red team’s unbeaten record was on the line. Glenflesk got off to the better start but it wasn’t long before Fossa got going. Our goalie Matthew O’Connor pulled off some outstanding saves and Sophie Dennehy marshalled the back line with authority. Daire O’Brien dominated throughout the whole game while Luke and Abby Murphy gave their usual 100%. Our man of the match Rocco Sheehan caused havoc at full forward and a great nights football was topped off when Amy Coffey got the vital score in the dying minutes to level the game. Tonight felt like a victory with everyone on the panel making a contribution while our supporters were very vocal and they were the extra man that got us over the line. Final score Fossa 5-09 Glenflesk 5-09 Congrats Well done to Danielle O’Brien who won the Primary Schools Skills during the week. Danielle is a wonderful, enthusiastic girl who no doubt has honed her skills under the watchful eye of her granddad, James and all at Fossa are proud of her achievement. DISCO As part of our ongoing programme for the upcoming Féile we are having a retro disco in McSorleys on Friday, June 17th. All proceeds from the disco will go towards hosting and the needs of the boys and girls U-14 teams. Tickets will be available from members of both teams or any club officer. GARDA VETTING Under the National Vetting Act no person will be allowed to undertake any GAA activity with juveniles without being vetted by the Garda Síochána. It will be deemed to be an offence under the terms of the GAA and the law nationally. The GAA has recently launched a new electronic vetting system which replaces the original paper system. The new e-vetting system is aimed at being a more efficient and streamlined way of being vetted. Our children’s officer Christina Tangney is on hand to assist anyone not vetted with the new system. The immediate goal of the GAA is to get everyone involved in the Association who is not vetted sorted with immediate effect. Those previously vetted under the old system may then be asked to go through the new process. The club wants to ensure that everyone is vetted in due course. Anyone who needs more information or assistance can contact Christina via email at christina.tangney@mycit.ie or alternatively at 086 1925549.
