Town set for weekend bonanza KILLARNEY is poised for what has now become its annual bumper weekend as the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle pedals centre stage tomorrow followed by the kick-off of the Munster senior and minor finals on Sunday. Our best wishes to the teams and here’s hoping they follow in the triumphant footsteps of the successful Kerry side that lifted the Munster junior football trophy for the third successive year after de-

feating Cork on Wednesday. It’s been a week that saw several changings of the guard, with Councillor Brendan Cronin receiving the chain of office as cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District and Councillor Michael O’Shea taking the helm as Kerry mayor. The three other municipal districts across the county welcomed new leaders; see our coverage on page 12. Meanwhile, Killarney Rotary Club’s outgoing president John O’Sullivan handed over the reins to his successor Angela O’Connor who unveiled numerous projects for the

Question

I am retiring from work when I turn 66 and will be eligible for a reduced-rate State Pension (Contributory) of €198.60. My husband is getting his full State Pension (Contributory) of €233. He thinks we would be better off if he claimed for me as a qualified adult on his pension. Is he correct? If we do this, will all the money be paid to him?

www.sneemhotel.com

Answer If your husband claims for you as a qualified adult on his pension, then his pension will consist of €233 plus an increase of €209 – a total of €442. The increase is automatically paid directly to you (although you can request that it is paid with your husband’s pension). If you decide to claim a reduced rate contributory pension then the total for you both will be €431.60. Therefore, it would appear that you are indeed better off being a qualified adult. However, there are other factors that you should take into account. While your husband’s pension is not means tested, the Increase for a Qualified Adult is means tested. This means that any income you have in your own right from employment, selfemployment, savings, investments and capital (for example, any property except your own home) is taken into account. If you have joint savings or investments with your spouse, half is taken into account. You also need to look at the tax situation. Your husband is entitled to claim a PAYE tax credit (€1,650) with his pension. Even though the Increase for a Qualified Adult is paid directly to you it is not a social welfare payment to you so you cannot claim a PAYE tax credit of €1,650. However if you claim a social welfare payment in your own right (for example, your reduced-rate pension) you can claim a full PAYE tax credit. You should analyse both options carefully and do detailed calculations, taking all the factors that affect how much you receive into account. After you do the calculations, you may find that you are better off claiming the reduced-rate contributory pension in your own right. You can get help with this from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Brendan starts his voyage as Killarney cathaoirleach INDEPENDENT member of Kerry County Council Brendan Cronin has won the chain of office as cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District. Cllr Cronin expressed delight at being elected, noting it is his first time taking the role in his 17 years as a councillor. Priorities for his term ahead include focusing on the implications of the Brexit vote for Killarney’s tourism product a well as for agriculture. “A big concern from my perspective is the fact that we are entering unchartered waters following the Brexit vote,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am really concerned about the

effects the vote could have on our tourism industry. Killarney is Ireland’s tourist capital and so many are employed in the sector here and so many businesses are involved. We must promote our product selling it and putting ourselves out there as we have the best tourist product in this country without question.” The Brexit vote also has “huge implications” for agriculture, he added. Locally, the provision of a new public cemetery is among the priorities on the new cathaoirleach's list. Congestion is another problem that needs to be resolved in Killarney town and there is also

an urgent need for adequate parking, while junctions are also a concern for the new cathaoirleach. “The junctions at Lewis Road, Madam’s Hill, Ballycasheen and Coolcaslaugh need to be addressed. I will use the 12 months to highlight them at every opportunity to Transport Infrastructure Ireland. These junctions are extremely dangerous and they need to be remedied,” he said. Cllr Cronin praised the spirit of volunteerism that exists throughout the Killarney Municipal District, including Killarney, Castleisland and Rathmore. Councillor Brendan Cronin.

Meet Kerry’s new first citizens FIVE councillors took the helm in the county on Monday as the new mayors of Kerry and Tralee and the chairpersons of Killarney, Listowel, and South and West Kerry were elected. Independent Kerry County Council member Brendan Cronin takes the chain of office as cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District. Cllr Michael O’Shea, Fianna Fáil, was elected the new cathaoirleach of Kerry, and Fine Gael Cllr Liam Purtill was elected leas-cathaoirleach. Labour’s Cllr Terry O’Brien is Tralee’s new mayor, and Cllr Norma Foley, Fianna Fáil, was elected the leas-cathaoirleach, Tralee. Cllr Aoife Thornton, Fine Gael, is the new cathaoirleach in Listowel, while Mike Kennelly, Fine Gael, is leas-cathaoirleach.

Cllr John Francis Flynn, Fianna Fáil, is the new cathaoirleach of South and West Kerry, with outgoing cathaoirleach of the district, Cllr Patrick Connor Scarteen, as leas-cathaoirleach. Independent Councillor Maura Healy-Rae had been expected to become cathaoirleach of Killarney following a pact between her father, TD Danny Healy-Rae, when he was a member of the council. It had been planned following the 2014 local elections that Danny would take the helm of Killarney as a result of the deal. After he was elected to the Dáil, his daughter Maura was co-opted on to his seat. At Monday’s AGM, Independent Cllr Donal Grady proposed Cllr Maura Healy-Rae. Cllr Brendan Cronin, Cllr Terry O’Brien, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Aoife Thornton, Cllr Michael Councillor Brendan Cronin was also O’Shea, Mayor of Kerry, and Cllr John Flynn. THE blight of chewing gum litter is one that is marring the appearance of Killarney’s roads and pavements and now the town is taking a tough stance on this particularly unsightly and unpleasant form of littering. Killarney Municipal District, Killarney Tidy Towns Committee and Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce have joined forces to launch a campaign to raise awareness of the disposal of chewing gum. The Bin It Your Way campaign, initially unveiled by IBEC, encourages members of the public to dispose of their used gum responsibly. “We would also like to tell people to just think before disposing of chewing gum,” said Yvonne Quill, chairwoman, Killarney Looking Good/Killarney Tidy Towns. Kate O’Leary, president, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, said: “Our town is looking well due to the constant effort of our Municipal Authority and Tidy Towns committee. Every tiny piece of litter or gum looks remarkably out of place because our town is so well kept and if we could reduce the amount of gum on the streets it would be a huge help. Also let’s not forget the hazards the gum poses to birds when the peck at it.”

update SHE started her own schooldays at Scoil Bhride Loreto and on Friday deputy principal Mary Moynihan had plenty of help there as she recalled her many happy memories from a distinguished teaching career. Crowds descended on the classrooms to wish her well at a special celebration for the hugely popular Mrs Moynihan who is retiring after 38 years of dedicated service to the school. Father Kieran O’Brien, chairperson of the board of management, led a Mass involving the whole school. Fittingly, considering Mrs Moynihan’s love of nature and the care she took to highlight its beauty to her protégés, a tree was planted in the school grounds to remind the children of her every day. Mrs Moynihan started her own schooldays in Loreto at four years of age. She progressed through Loreto Secondary School and on to Carysfort College and began her teaching career in 1978. “She embraced all new advances in technology, moving with ease from the blackboard and chalk of 1978 to the interactive whiteboard today,” said school principal Mary O’Sullivan. “At the same time she encouraged the children to keep up the traditional skills of knitting and gardening and to appreciate the beauty of nature and the local history of Killarney. She continuously upskilled herself but always remained unassuming, approachable and willing to share her expertise.” As deputy principal since 1998, Mrs Moynihan was closely involved with all developments in the school including the new extension. “Mrs Moynihan is a gifted teacher and a true professional who brought out the best in every child,” said Mrs O’Sullivan. “We are sad that Mrs Moynihan is leaving Loreto. We will miss her presence in school every day, her sense of fun, her empathy, her friendship and kindness, her wisdom and experience, her laughter and common sense.”

Psychiatric nurses begin strike action AS SOME 130 psychiatric nurses went on strike in Kerry on Wednesday, Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae raised the issue of the shortage of nurses in the sector throughout the country. Addressing Minister of State for Mental Health, Helen McEntee, he asked her why the aspirations of the “A Vision for Change policy” that was brought forward 10 years ago has not been achieved with almost 600 posts vacant in this area at present. Ms McEntee replied that the policy, adopted by the Government in 2006 as the basis for the future development of mental health services in Ireland. A Vision for Change has guided national mental health policy for the past 10 years and its term comes to an end this year, according to Ms McEntee. “The Department is currently finalising a request for tender for a review and analysis of international evidence and best practice in the development of mental health services, including a review of current delivery of services in Ireland,” she said. “This review will provide evidence to determine the policy direction for a revision of A Vision for Change.” Deputy Healy-Rae says while he appreciates the work to date that has to be done in this sector more needs to be done and urgently to ensure that this posts are filled.

Eyes on the prize for Munster football final THE Kerry senior team will face the Premier county in Killarney on Sunday and the clash in Fitzgerald Stadium will be the first time in 18 years that the teams have met in a provincial decider. Injury problems in the Kerry camp are beginning to clear up slowly but surely and the likes of Johnny Buckley and James O’Donoghue, for instance, have returned to full training. Anthony Maher too will have had another few weeks of training under his belt after a long layoff with an injury that took longer than expected to mend. Tipp’s defeat of Cork will focus the minds of the Kerry players and we wish them the best in their quest for a 78th Munster title. The throw-in is at 2pm and the referee for the final is David Gough of Meath.

Kerry minors take on Cork THE Kingdom and the Rebel County will renew their rivalry in the Munster minor final at 12 noon in Ftizgerald Stadium on Sunday. Kerry are of course All-Ireland champions for the past two years and they can still call on the likes of Sean O’Shea, Billy Courtney, Daniel O’Brien, Graham O’Sullivan, Bryan Sweeney and Mike Breen from last year’s successful panel. Peter Keane has taken over the reins from Jack O’Connor as manager. Tribute to the late Paddy ‘Bomber’ O’Shea – ‘the quintessential Crokes man’ By Eamonn Fitzgerald THE phrase “ar scath a chéile a mhairimid”, aptly describes the vice-president of Dr Crokes, Paddy “Bomber” O’Shea, who passed away last weekend, aged 81. It was fitting that thousands of people came from near and far to bid farewell to the “Bomber”, and that he was accompanied on his final journey by hundreds of club members from his beloved Dr Crokes. One of Killarney’s true sporting legends, Paddy was a Killarney man to the core. He started out as a mechanic in Culloty’s garage in Fair Hill before moving to Liebherr. Born in Sunny Hill and later in married life he moved a few hundred yards up the road to O’Sullivan’s Place.

16

Killarney Advertiser 01.07.16

Sport, politics and all facets of human life came alive when you were in his company. Paddy was the quintessential Crokes man – totally immersed in all aspects of the club at different stages. His playing career was immense and successful, playing minor football from 1949 to 1952, winning in 1951 with Dick Fitzgeralds. He won minor hurling championships in 1950, 1951 and 1952. On the team in 1950 also were his two brothers, Murt and Seano. Paddy donned the green and gold for the Kerry Minor Hurlers in 1951 and 1052 and with the Kerry Junior Footballers in 1955, with the latter playing experience interrupted when he broke his leg. Paddy played with Dr Crokes Seniors from 1950 to 1969. He

captained the team in '56, the first year of the Dr Crokes "first" seven in a row and retired with a haul of eight O’Donoghue Cup medals. Golf was another love of Paddy’s and a game he excelled in. He was very proud of all of his family and their achievements in sport and beyond. To his wife Anne, sons Padraig, Colm, John and Aidan, daughters Áine and Sinead, his brother Seano and sister Sheila, his daughters and son-in-law, beloved grandchildren, extended family and so many friends and admirers we extend our deepest sympathy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis. Slán abhaile, Paddy. The late Paddy ‘Bomber’ O’Shea.

WHEELS IN MOTION FOR RING OF KERRY CHARITY CYCLE

WELL, it's all systems go in towns and villages across the county as volunteers are putting the finishing touches to welcoming all taking part in Ireland's biggest charity cycle tomorrow. In its 33rd year, the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is bringing together people from every corner of Ireland and beyond. This year 11,000 people will fundraise with the aim of exceeding the €1.85 million raised last year. Cathal Walshe, Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle PRO, offered the following welcome to those travelling to Kerry this weekend. “We are putting the final touches to everything down in Kerry for this fantastic event and look forward to welcoming the 11,000 fundraisers for what should be a magical weekend,” he said. Hundreds of volunteers marshal, operate

food stops and provide medical and technical support. The scale of the cycle is ever increasing, meaning that this year there will be 23,000 sandwiches ordered; 10,000 plus litres of water; 35,000 bananas; 30,000 slices of buttered brack; 30,000 Nature Valley cereal bars; 2,000 volunteers; 1,000 replacement bicycle tubes; and 32 counties represented. Fundraisers are coming from 20 countries around the world for one great cause The event begins tomorrow, Friday, July 1, with a pre-cycle expo. This will serve to start the excitement as people begin registering from 2pm. The first of the participants will take to the roads at 6am on Saturday morning to begin the 180km journey. On return to Killarney, a post cycle party will be in full swing for everyone to enjoy.

Something for everyone at Ring of Kerry after-party

Michael Fassbender to be honoured in home town HOLLYWOOD superstar Michael Fassbender is to be honoured in Killarney with the greatest accolade the town he grew up in can bestow. The acclaimed thespian will be inducted to the Order of Innisfallen in recognition of his remarkable achievements in the film industry which has seen him nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. The 39-year-old will be feted by the town’s Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and the Killarney Municipal Area for helping to boost Killarney’s profile on a world stage by achieving great success in his chosen field. The award will be presented to the star of such movie blockbusters as Hunger, 12 Years A Slave, Steve Jobs, Prometheus, Frank, Shame, MacBeth and Jane Eyre at a reception in Killarney on Friday, October 7. The event will be followed by the inaugural Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce gala blacktie ball in the Europe Hotel and Resort close to Michael’s family home in Fossa, where his parents, Josef and Adele, still reside. Michael was once an altar boy at the nearby Prince of Peace Church in Fossa and he attended the local national school before going on to St Brendan’s College and, later, successfully chasing his dream to become one of the world’s most in-demand actors. He was bitten by the acting bug when he joined the Bricriú Theatre Company, run by local man Donie Courtney, in Killarney, and he later moved to London which is still his base. The Order of Innisfallen is presented annually to recipients who have made a significant contribution to the economy of Killarney. Previous recipients include singer Daniel O’Donnell who attracts thousands of fans to his concerts in Killarney every year.

THERE was a changing of the guard at Killarney Rotary Club this week as outgoing president John O’Sullivan handed over the chain of office to incoming president Angela O’Connor. Angela took the helm at the weekly Rotary lunch, which took place at Gaby’s Restaurant, High Street, on Wednesday. The incoming president, who has been a member of Killarney Rotary since 2008, is a solicitor and partner in the firm of O’Connor O’Shea, Solicitors, High Street, Killarney. Originally from Listowel, Angela has lived in Killarney for over 20 years. As a member of the ladies committee at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, she is actively involved with the junior members. “I am looking forward to my year in office and in strengthening Killarney Rotary Club’s involvement in its charity events and community projects,” Angela said. “I hope to continue and expand on the good work done by our outgoing president John in our projects such as the Youth Leadership Awards, the Young Musician of the Year, our annual charity wine and art night in November and our charity afternoon tea in October.” Outgoing president John O’Sullivan thanked his fellow Rotarians for their support and reviewed the highlights of past 12 months. John was applauded for a very successful year, during which he spearheaded numerous key events, including the Evening of Wine & Art following which funds were raised to buy a new vehicle for Killarney Water Rescue. John, a professional photographer, is a member of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and also an organiser of Killarney Walking Festival. Among those present at the Killarney Rotary ceremony on Wednesday was Rotary Ireland assistant governor Teresa O’Brien.

Ambulance service ‘not near what it should be’ HUGE concerns have been expressed about ambulance cover for Killarney with calls for an extension of the service. Councillor Donal Grady said he believed “our service is not near what it should be” after claims that a man in Kilcummin who sustained a broken leg endured an hour-anda-half wait for an ambulance. The plight of the man, who had sustained the injury while working in a bog, was highlighted by Cllr Grady. Cllr Grady said he believes the ambulance had to make the trip from Kenmare to Kilcummin. “We can be talking about this issue until we’re blue in the face, but the so-called ‘golden hour’ is absolutely vital for people’s survival,” he said. “This man, who is 65 years of age, was waiting an hour and a half, in great pain, and it was another 30 minutes before he was in hospi-

TUESDAY evening, June 28, proved to be a nostalgic occasion for a group of oarsmen representing the most successful era of the now-defunct St Finan's Rowing Club who were accorded the Hall of Fame Award from Killarney Regatta club at a special function in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. After its formation in 1952 St Finan's achieved much success at the local regatta winning junior, senior and ladies races in the mid-50s. After winning both the junior men’s and ladies sixes in 1962 the club went into a period of gradual decline which also coincided with a decline in interest in the sport which led to the annual regatta not being held until it was revived in 1967. tal.” The Independent councillor called for a review of the service, and added the current one is not acceptable. “Unfortunately it is a frightening situation and people have to come along and put people into their cars and take them to hospital that way,” he said. “It is in no way the fault of the people working in our local ambulance service.”

since The Hospital won a men’s race led to a specially convened meeting and a programme of winter training under the excellent tutelage of Gerald O'Connor was developed. This was an unprecedented approach to rowing in Killarney and a trend that was to be followed by other clubs. In subsequent years Gerald was ably assisted by two former winning oarsmen, namely Dan Cronin and Johnny Culloty, and this trio can take much credit for their contribution to what has been regarded as the most successful chapter in the history of St Finan’s Rowing club – an era in which it won three senior titles in - row as well as senior fours, junior sixes, junior fours and ladies sixes. Regatta chairman Pat Cronin presented each crew member with a specially inscribed memento of the occasion.

Historic 40th year of Killarney Athletic Seven-A-Side tournament A

s the 2016 seven-a-side kicks off, it is remarkable to think that this is the 40th consecutive year that Killarney Athletic has run the tournament, says Mike O’Sullivan HAVING been part of the organising committee in the first seven-aside in 1977 it is fantastic to see the competition reaching this milestone year. Through the founding of the club in 1965 and the formation of the Kerry District League in 1972, Killarney Athletic had run seven-a-side competitions in the Half Moon field and also in the Áras Phádraig pitch prior to 1977. But the 1977 tournament was planned and organised to ensure that soccer would reach a higher level of promotion in Killarney and in the surrounding areas. The tournament was also the starting point for many players before playing or entering clubs in the Kerry District League. The competition also provided many people with the opportunity to manage a soccer team for the first time and all of the local clubs today are fortunate to have such committed club officials and volunteers who gained an interest in organising teams through involvement in the seven-a-side at underage or senior level. Teams with players from Ballyhar, Mastergeeha and Kenmare were all keen competitors in the seven-a-side and of course the majority of players who played with the Killarney Albion team that were runners-up in the 1977 final joined Killarney Rangers to form Killarney Celtic in the ’77/’78 Kerry District League season. The dawn of the first underage seven-a-side tournament in 1978 became a nursery for young players in Killarney and surrounding areas, while the first ladies seven-a-side in 1990 proved to be a major success. An over-35s competition followed in 1993, becoming very popular by allowing the “ageing stars” to continue to show off their skills and prove that seven-a-side football can be enjoyed even when the joints and limbs have slowed down. Success of the tournament There is no doubt that there were many contributing factors as to why the seven-a-side became such a popular local sporting event over the

years with participation and a sense of community to the fore. The hosting of the tournament in the Áras Phádraig pitch from 1977 to 1998 with the support of the Franciscan community was key to the tournament’s popularity, growth and success. The venue in the heart of town ensured a “buzz” in the area throughout the summer months with friends and work colleagues forming annually into teams with all sorts of colourful names. The format of the tournament starts out with teams in groups ensuring a minimum number of games for each team. The more serious competition begins with the knock-out stages with teams thereafter competing for the Premier and Reserve Cups. The “no off-side” rule also makes seven-a-side soccer more enjoyable for players and spectators and makes the referee’s life a little easier. Early years of the seven-a-side The first seven-a-side in ’77 had 20 teams entered with each team restricted to only two registered club players from the Kerry District League. This rule forced teams to gather players who were not playing soccer in the Kerry League at the time while also encouraging work colleague and friends to form teams. This rule changed after a few years with the increase of players registering and playing in the KDL thereafter. Firms such as Tuf Shoes, Scotts Tools and Liebherr all entered teams into

the ‘77 tournament with many other notable firms competing in the following years and to the present day. Sponsored teams from the Laurels, Tatler, Sweeney’s, Corkery's, Belvedere and Old Kentucky were all to the fore of competition in the early years and some still endure to the present day. Ryan’s and The Castle Heights Hotel also entered teams in the ‘77 event while a competitive team from Scartaglin were the first ‘out of town’ team to challenge for the Killarney Autos sponsored cup. The event also had the added attraction of prize money for the winners and runners-up and this was first sponsored by Con O’Leary of the Laurels Bar. As well as promoting the game locally the club also donated a contribution of funds raised to a number of local charities with St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort being a beneficiary of the early tournaments.

Support of the local media The coverage and support of the local media also contributed hugely to the growth of the tournament over the years as the event got massive exposure as an annual local sporting community event. This media exposure also encouraged the local business community to support the event through sponsorship. The support and sponsorship of the tournament was also a major contributing factor that allowed the club to purchase and develop its own

pitch facility in Woodlawn in 1993. End of an era in the Áras Phádraig pitch The 1998 seven-a-side was to prove to be the last staging of the competition in the “Áras pitch” as the Lewis Road ground was purchased in 1999 by the Urban District Council so as to provide another bus and car park for Killarney. This indeed marked the end of an era for the tournament but the years of seven-a-sides in the Aras at underage and senior level with the sporting and social outlet it provided will always remain in the minds of those who enjoyed the pleasure it brought. The moving of the seven-a-side to the club’s ground in Woodlawn in 1999 represented a major change for the tournament but to the credit of all who organised, promoted and supported the event over the years it continued to prosper in the new venue. This year’s tournament also marks the 18th year of the seven-aside in Woodlawn. Little did those of us who were in the organising committee of the first seven-a-side back in 1977 think that we would see the tournament run annually for the following 40 years but the credit for its longevity is ingrained in the spirit it captured through the support of the whole community and something that we all can be proud of.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Repair works following storm damage I WOULD like to welcome funding for repair works following storm damage earlier this year. I had lobbied for the funding and I am delighted it has been made available for these important projects under the Severe Weather Allocation, Tranche 2. I am particularly pleased that the sea wall at Cromane Lower will be repaired and raised at specific locations as homes in the area are at serious risk of flooding. I believe it is vital that we campaign vigorously for funding for coastal protection works and flood relief works in areas such as Banna, Incharea, Rossbeigh, Cromane, Dooks, Ballinskelligs and the Maherees.

I would also like to thank my council colleagues, who in my absence agreed to the raising of a €550,000 loan for the Cliff Road, Rossbeigh at last week’s meeting of Kerry County Council. Repairs to the sea wall Cromane Lower and raise at specific locations, €30,000; Lighthouse Road, Valentia, €20,000; repairs and protection works to Coonana Harbour Road, €15,000; repairs to road and culvert at High Road, Glenbeigh, €15,000, bridge rehabilitation works to bridge on Rossbeigh Road, €65,000. Communication key to stop hooligans from rampaging unchallenged MANY of us have been enjoying Euro 2016 and the focus is now rightly on the football itself, after a disappointing start to the tournament. Lessons do however have to be learnt from the distressing scenes we witnessed during week one. According to reports from several news outlets, there was an apparent lack of real time co-operation and co-ordination between bodies tasked with different aspects of tournament management. From emergency services to stadium security, to local authorities and police spotters out in the streets; all those authorised at major events like this, should have the appropri-

ate access to real time, consistent information to keep us safe. Key to the co-operation and co-ordination between these government bodies is the need to “speak the same language.” What I mean by that is the need that all these agencies are connected through the same technology that provides real-time information exchange to be available to those who can act upon it. If this type of co-operation technology was deployed and properly used in France, it is less likely that we would see hooligans rampaging unchallenged because the resources had been deployed to the wrong place. With the establishment of

proper communications channels, the appropriate resources could be redeployed in an instant, or even more impressively – pre-deployed based on previous data about the likelihood of an incident. The technology exists already, and one would hope officials in Rio, Russia and other forthcoming major event organisers have at least considered its benefits. Beaufort teen power generates cash for a good cause BEAUFORT’S younger citizens can take a well-deserved bow after raising an impressive €2130 for the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation. Beaufort Youth Club organised a glamorous charity ball in the five-star Dunloe Hotel at the end of April. The event proved a huge success and was a credit to the organisers and their youth leaders and mentors. The hosting of a formal ball for the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation was the brainchild of Beaufort Youth Club junior leaders Aoife O’Brien, Jack Sweeney, Saoirse Clifford and William Joy. Members of the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service were invited to dance the night away at the glittering, fun event. “The ball was for first, second and third years and all proceeds went directly to the charity,” said Marie Kehoe, youth leader at the club. Tralee teenager Donal Walsh fundraised tirelessly while battling cancer and the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation was set up by his family in his memory primarily in order to promote his anti-suicide LiveLife message.

Take walk on the wild side MAYBE you too could get close to wildlife during an exciting summer camp run by Killarney National Park Education Centre. The centre has been running environmental camps for children for many years now and all of the staff and volunteers who help run them are very experienced and Garda vetted. “Usually the ratio of children to adults is about 6:1, so there is plenty of supervision and lots of direction,” said Chris Barron of Killarney National Park Education Centre. “The main aim of the camps, both the Junior Rangers (residential) and the day camps are for the children taking part, to have as much fun as possible while making new friends and exploring the National Park and learning about many of the plants and animals that live there.” The day camps run from 9.30 in the morning until 3pm in the afternoon, Tuesday to Friday, and are based at Knockreer House. “The children play a whole host of ecologically themed games, do scavenger hunts, pond dipping, set trap, use microscopes and they might even bring home a few things that they have made, such as a nest box or bug hotel!” said Chris. The Junior Ranger Camps are for slightly older children and are based in the Arthur Vincent House, out on the Muckross Peninsula. “Both venues are ideal for camps for children as they are in such safe and self-contained environments, while also being within easy reach of the woodlands, fields, lakes and rivers which the children will be able to explore and get to know while on the camps,” said Chris. “During the Junior Ranger Camps the children will get the chance to watch badgers at a sett, at night somewhere in the woods at Muckross. They’ll also use bat detectors to listen for bats at roosts and get the chance to help inspect beehives to see how honey is made. They’ll also do some foraging for edible wild plants and maybe even cook some on the campfire!” Chris added: “The camps are a very good way of getting children outdoors and helping them to appreciate and understand a little bit more about the wildlife and the habitats around us. They also help the children realise what impact their actions can on the environment, whether this is not dropping litter or helping to make space for nature!”

UNIVERSAL CONTOUR WRAP Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio gives an insight into the must-have treatment for parties, weddings and special occasions

A QUICK and easy way to lose inches, sculpt curves, detoxify, boost circulation and smooth the skin. Need we say more? Available at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio, the Universal Contour Wrap is €95 for 120 minutes and €245 for a course of three, It is a must-have for parties, weddings, holidays and any other time when you want to look your absolute best! The Universal Contour Wrap is a totally natural, effective and safe way to achieve excellent and lasting inch loss, detoxify the body, cleanse the skin and leave you feeling totally rejuvenated with wonderful smooth and silky skin. Bandages that have been soaking in a warm solution containing only natural minerals and sea are used to reshape the body, lifting flabby

buttocks, flattening the abdomen and generally contouring the figure. How does the Universal Contour Body Wrap Work? Once the bandages that have soaked in the sea clay solution are applied to the body, the effect is that of a giant poultice. The treatment works by drawing out toxins from the fluid around the fat cells, whilst the bandaging technique works to compress and compact the soft fatty tissue, creating a smoother base over which the soft tissue lies. Not only can you expect excellent lasting inch loss, but also a superb treatment that cleanses, detoxifies and tightens the skin. It is important to note that our process is not dehydrating one, you will not put back on the “lost inches” through drinking a glass of water. In fact, we can assure you of the reverse, we actually encourage you to drink plenty of water after the treatment to cleanse and flush your system through, and this can help to achieve further inch loss and tightening of the skin over the following few days. For further details call 064-6632966.

Sparkling night out at Adams Jeweller WALKERS WELCOME EVERY year we get lots of walkers taking part in the Run Killarney half-marathon and the 10k event. Walkers enjoy the opportunity to walk the route on the Ring of Kerry road when the road is closed to traffic. Walkers would not get the opportunity to walk this route usually as the road would be too busy with buses and heavy traffic. No matter how long it takes you all event services will be available to runners and walkers. So if you would rather walk than run sign up now.

Motivation

It’s the final run in to the big day with only three weeks left to go and the finish line in sight! It is important over the last couple of weeks to focus and keep motivated. Most runners go through a stage where they lack motivation. Keep reminders of why you are doing this and keep a training log. Think about how good you will feel. My advice is always to run in a group, friends are the best motivators. Refresh your runs by trying new routes. We are spoilt for choice in Killarney with so many routes to choose from in the National Park. Record your training distances and times using a training watch or download one of the many mobile phone apps for runners. You will be surprised how this adds a whole new dimension to your run. If you can’t seem to find the joy in running no matter what you do, take some time off. A period of rest will revive your body and mind and chances are once you have stopped running for a while you will begin to miss it.

Places are filling up fast make sure to register online www.runkillarney.com or register by calling into O’Sullivan Outdoor Shop, Killarney.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Killarney Library opens a new chapter for young readers

B

OOKWORMS will always remember their childhood holidays as the perfect opportunity to catch up with the antics of our favourite fictional characters. Now Killarney Library will help open new chapters to create happy memories for younger generations of readers. The Summer Stars reading programme was launched in libraries across Kerry this week and it invites children to participate in a challenge that will keep them reading throughout the school summer holidays. “Each year Kerry Library runs summer reading programmes for primary school children to promote literacy development during the holidays and to encourage non-readers to engage with books,” said Eamon Browne of Killarney Library. The reading challenge started on

Monday and will run during the summer until August 22. “Taking part is easy, just call into to Killarney Library and register. Each child who registers for the free programme joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during the summer,” said Eamon. “Children will receive their own Summer Stars reading Card to record their progress and the Summer Stars Reward Stamp will be added to their card at the library for each book read.” At the end of the programme, all children who have participated will be invited to attend an awards event. The challenge will also include an interactive website where participants can play related themed games, review books, communicate with selected authors at: http://www.librariesireland.ie/

Grace Notes Save the arts

Killarney singer and music teacher Grace Foley on the importance of the arts

“WITHOUT a song or a dance what are we?” Those are the immortalised words of ABBA and are words that need to be taken into serious consideration by our government. Over 7000 people have signed a petition for a dedicated Arts, Culture and Heritage Department. The arts are so vital to life in Ireland. We are a country rich in heritage and only recently the country celebrated the Commemoration of the 1916 Rising with the world of the arts playing a huge role. This new department titled the Department of Regional Devel-

opment, Rural Affairs, Arts and The Gaeltacht seems to stick the arts in somewhere where us artists fear it will never be considered a priority. I think that the arts may be viewed as a “non essential” sector, when nothing could be further from the truth. In Ireland we heavily rely on the arts, especially during difficult times. We sing when times are tough; we have always gathered to dance even if it meant cycling for miles to get there; our poets and playwrights have documented some of Ireland's darkest hours in words we still

read today so we can get a real feel for how difficult things were for our ancestors. We pulled ourselves through a very difficult recession and during this time I have personally seen people continue to send their children for music, dance and acting lessons. This is because there is a belief in Ireland that the arts are vital to our children's education, self-expression, personal development and futures. In good times and in bad the arts continue to endure, but this, unfortunately, cannot continue if our government doesn't take this sector more seriously. I urge everyone to promote the arts in anyway you can and bring this matter to the attention of our politicians. Let's remember to sing a 'Song For Ireland'.

Killarney and Kerry’s connections with 1916 THE Sun Is Rising for Ireland is the title of an exhibit on the many Killarney and Kerry connections to the 1916 Rebellion in Ireland. It opened in Killarney Library this week where it runs until July 16. The exhibit is curated by Conor Doolan, BA (Honours) in Heritage Studies, who is a native of Killarney and has graduated from Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology’s unique Heritage Studies course with first class honours. In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 10:1-12, 17-20: Jesus sent out his disciples on a mission to let people know “The kingdom of God has come near to you.” Recall when you have reached out to another in word or in deed to help them realise that they were cherished, perhaps by a word of sympathy or encouragement, or by giving a hand with a difficult task. What was it like for you to experience yourself as a person bringing help and encouragement to another? Jesus sent the disciples out two by two. When have you found it beneficial not to be working alone, but with another by your side? How did companionship change the experience, or what you were able to achieve? The instructions Jesus gave the disciples suggest appropriate attitudes for the one who ‘goes before Jesus’. Let the images speak to you and evoke memories of times when you were welcomed and times when you were not. When have you found that it was good news to have the attitudes Jesus describes? When the disciples returned, Jesus warned them not to focus on the thrill of what they had been able to achieve. It was more important that their ‘names are written in heaven’. Sometimes we also need reminders that who we are is more important than what we do. Who have been the people who brought this home to you? Have there been experiences that helped you to appreciate this? John Byrne OSA

MUSINGS

“I HAVE given you power to tread underfoot serpents and scorpions.” (Luke 10:19) This Gospel was for many years the only option given for St Patrick’s Day. I always thought the reason was in the sentence above. Christians were to be protected from serpents and scorpions, said the Lord who commissioned the seventy-two. So Patrick took good care to banish all snakes from Ireland, as part, perhaps, of this protection deal. Or maybe these were symbols of an ancient pre-Christian faith, or more likely, instances of all that might hurt a new Christian. Snakes continue to be a reality in many parts of the world, outside Ireland. People bitten by snakes make news every day of the year, particularly when the ones bitten are unsuspecting western tourists. But Christians should not fear snakes or indeed anything harmful: nothing comes in the way of the Lord’s work. Lord, the power available to us believers is not fanciful or imaginary. You are close, you are with us, protecting us from all that might hurt us. Serpents and scorpions, even snakes must stay away. Fr Bernard Cotter

“GOD save all here” is a traditional Irish blessing, spoken on entering someone’s home or arriving at a gathering. It was also used as a general greeting when entering a public house, and is often heard in films depicting life in early 20th century Ireland. Other variations traditionally spoken on crossing a threshold include “God bless all here” or “God bless all in this house”. While not in use as much these days, such greetings serve to set the tone for a visit. They indicate that the visitor has come in peace, with good wishes for all present – he or she bears no ill will to anyone. Today Jesus recommends a specific greeting for his disciples to use when entering a home: “Peace to this house!” Whatever house the disciples go into, this should be their greeting. Like the traditional Irish blessings, these words set a tone. Jesus explains that if a person of peace lives in that house, “your peace will go and rest on him”. The peace blessing offered by the disciples will spread to those they meet. Peace should be our number one consideration in our dealings with others.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News +

No man is an island DESCRIBED in the Irish Times as “a bewildering act of self-harm” the shocking decision of the UK to leave the European Union has left the world reeling. Our neighbours are in danger of isolating themselves economically and politically. No man is an island and globalised markets of today require interdependence. But the people have spoken and now the task begins of working out the way forward. And of course in Ireland the challenge lying a head will be particularly acutely felt. “The threat to our strong trading relationship both across the Border and the Irish Sea should not be underestimated – the Republic will now be the external border of the Union, responsible for policing and taxing its trade across that border,” notes the Irish Times. “The free travel area which Leave campaigners have promised us will remain may also, however, find itself falling foul of zealous new UK curbs on migrants from the EU. In some form a return of little lamented border controls is inevitable. That alone would set back the coming together of the two parts of this island which has been such an important dividend of the peace process.” To tackle such challenges Ireland will almost certainly have to engage in special pleading with its European partners to seek approval for the continuation of a unique bilateral relationship with a non-member with specifically tailored rules to facilitate those historic ties. The Guardian wonders whether there is a way back from Brexit. “Several scenarios could see the vote overturned, involving either a Labour or Tory prime minister. But all are speculative,” it notes. “The British public have voted to leave the EU in an advisory referendum – but there have been voices in business, diplomacy, politics and European politics desperately asking if the issue can be revisited. Is that feasible?” The Commons might, for instance, seek to prevent the prime minister from triggering article 50, the clause of the Lisbon treaty that provides the framework of an EU member state’s exit from the union. It would seem unlikely that a majority of MPs would be willing to disregard the clear majority of the British people who voted for Brexit. More plausibly, the Commons might set conditions on the renegotiation, including access to the single market, membership of the European Free Trade Association or the preservation of the union with Scotland. But what is overwhelmingly obvious is how little preparation was made for the various options facing the UK and EU following a Brexit vote. Concentrate Drivers using a hands-free phone get just as distracted as those holding it in their hand, researchers have found. Scientists at the University of Sussex found conversations can cause the driver to visually imagine what they are talking about. This uses a part of the brain normally used to watch the road, the University of Sussex study shows. The findings made the case for all phones to be banned from cars, according to the lead researcher. The study involved 20 male and 40 female volunteers who took part in video tests while sitting in a car seat behind a steering wheel. One group of volunteers were allowed to "drive" undistracted while another two heard a male voice from a loudspeaker 3ft (0.9m) away. Those who were distracted by the voice engaging them in conversation took just under a second longer to respond to events, such as a pedestrian stepping off the pavement, an oncoming car on the wrong side of the road or an unexpected vehicle parked at a junction. The study showed that asking a simple question - such as "Where did you leave the blue file?"- during phone conversations could mean a driver concentrates on an area four times smaller than normal, because their brain is imagining the room where they left the file, instead of checking for hazards in front of them. Dr Graham Hole, senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Sussex, said the research laid bare the "popular misconception that using a mobile phone while driving is safe as long as the driver uses a hands-free phone". "The problem is enforceability - it's very difficult for the police to tell if someone's using a hands-free phone," he said. "But on balance, I think the law should be changed to get the right message across and make it absolutely clear that any use of a mobile phone while driving is hazardous." Other studies' have suggested that phone conversations in a car are more off-putting than listening to the radio or talking to a passenger, Dr Hole added. A passenger chatting in a car is less distracting, the researchers argue, because both stop talking when the driver needs to concentrate. It is illegal to ride a motorcycle or drive using hand-held phones or similar devices. Drivers can get an automatic fixed penalty notice if caught using one plus penalty points.

Busker in Kerry sings hilarious song from Donald Trump's perspective A SCOTTISH busker in Killarney has been making national headlines after serenading locals and visitors alike. His melodious portrayal of Donald Trump, from his perch on Main Street, has garnered many a laugh. It has become a YouTube hit and won national fame in the Irish Examiner this week. During the video, the audience can be heard laughing as the singer gives his take on the US presidential hopeful’s campaign. "On a serious note, guys, at the end of the summer my aim is to build a little conservatory on my house and I’m going to call it Trump tower ’cause Donald’s paying for it,” he adds.

Views From Kerry And Around The World Balanced diet A ‘Western’ diet of deep fried food, sugary drinks, alcohol and red meat has long been viewed as a recipe for poor health and shortened life-span. But a new study suggests that, when it comes to keeping the heart ticking over, it may not be so bad after-all. A study of more than 15,000 people found that while a Mediterranean diet of fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, did lower the risk of a heart attack or stroke, eating a Western diet did not increase the risk. In fact, people who stuck mainly to a Mediterranean diet still had a lower risk of heart problems even when supplementing it with one or two portions of, crisps, sweets, fizzy drinks, desserts or red meat each day. The researchers, from the University of Auckland, conclude that rather than avoiding healthy foods, people should eat more healthy foods, because they appear to have a protective effect. “The main message is that some foods – and particularly fruit and vegetables – seem to lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and this benefit is not explained by traditional risk factors such as good and bad cholesterol or blood pressure," said Professor Ralph Stewart, from Auckland City Hospital, University of Auckland, New Zealand, who led the study. “If you eat more of these foods in preference to others, you may lower your risk. The study found no evidence of harm from modest consumption of foods such as refined carbohydrates, deep fried foods, sugars and desserts. The research suggests we should place more emphasis on encouraging people with heart disease to eat more healthy foods, and perhaps focus less on avoiding unhealthy foods.” The study, which was published in the European Heart Journal, appears to prove that balance is key to keeping healthy, while a bit of ‘what you fancy’ is unlikely to do much harm. To find out the link between diet and health, the researchers asked 15,482 people with stable coronary artery disease to complete a lifestyle questionnaire detailing their intake of meat, fish, dairy foods, whole grains or refined grains, vegetables (excluding potatoes), fruit, desserts, sweets, sugary drinks, deep-fried foods and alcohol. Points were awarded for different levels of consumption to give a ‘Mediterranean Diet Score’ (MDS) and a ‘Western Diet Score’ (WDS.) For example eating three or more pieces of fruit per day would score four points, while eating fruit less than once per week would gain 0 points. After 3.7 years, there had been 1,588 incidences of heart attack, stroke or death, which accounted for 10.1 per cent of the original group. However, only 7.3 per cent of those who scored 15 points or more on the Mediterranean Diet Score had suffered a heart event. But there was no significant difference in death and heart attack/stroke rate for those who ate a predominately Western diet. Around 10 per cent of people involved in the study said they drank at least one fizzy drink a day, while two per cent said they ate up to two helpings of deep fried foods per day. Prof Stewart added: “After adjusting for other factors that might affect the results, we found that every one unit increase in the Mediterranean Diet Score was associated with a seven percent reduction in the risk of heart attacks, strokes or death from cardiovascular or other causes in patients with existing heart disease. In contrast, greater consumption of foods thought be less healthy and more typical of Western diets, was not associated with an increase in these adverse events, which we had not expected.” The study is in contrast to NHS advice which suggests cutting down on fatty and sugary foods and alcohol. In the UK, around 42,000 people very year die prematurely from coronary heart disease, so anything that could lower the risk would bring huge benefits to public health. Dieticians said that new study proved that a Mediteranaean diet can help lower the risk of suffering a heart attack or a stroke, but cautioned against eating too much unhealthy food. Dr Nita Forouhi, Programme Leader, MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge, said: "It is good news for people with existing heart disease that this study provides evidence that a healthy ‘Mediterranean diet’ is associated with lower future cardiovascular disease risk, and that this applies across many countries and world regions, not just in the Mediterranean region. "On the surface it is an attractive message that greater emphasis should be on encouraging healthy foods rather than avoiding unhealthy foods, but such a conclusion is premature. It is too early without further research to conclude convincingly about the lack of harm of unhealthy foods." Victoria Taylor, Senior Dietician at the British Heart Foundation added: “The study reinforces existing research we have on the Mediterranean style diet that links it to a range of health benefits including a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. But we should be cautious about the suggestion from the study that greater consumption of refined carbohydrates, deep fried foods, sugars and desserts, which are more typical of Western diets, are not associated with an increase in heart attack, stroke or death.” Prof Tom Sanders, Professor emeritus of Nutrition and Dietetics, King's College London, said: “The study found no relationship between deep-fried foods, refined carbohydrates and sugar sweetened beverages (characteristic of a Western dietary pattern) and risk; this is of note given the recent furore over sugar but is hardly surprising as older people are not major consumers of pop.”

Fans to be awarded medal for sportsmanship by Paris mayor THE Mayor of Paris has announced she will award the Medal of the City of Paris to Republic of Ireland football fans for their sportsmanship. According to the French sports newspaper L'Équipe, Mayor Anne Hidalgo said the supporters had been "exemplary in their sportsmanship" and distinguished themselves by the "atmosphere" they created from the start of Euro 2016. She has written to President Michael D Higgins to tell him of the award. The Republic of Ireland was beaten 2-1 by France in the last 16 of the tournament last Sunday. The 'Grand Vermeil' is regarded as Paris's most prestigious honour. It has been awarded to a wide variety of cultural and political figures. Previous recipients include Nobel Prize in literature winner Toni Morrison, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and jazz pianist Herbie Hancock.

Syrian refugee hands in €150,000 he found in donated wardrobe A SYRIAN refugee who was settling into his new German home, with furniture donated by charity, found €150,000 in a wardrobe. Muhannad M. made the discovery shortly after moving into his new flat in Minden, north RhineWestphalia, according to German police. He had been able to furnish his flat largely due to contributions from charities, and the wardrobe was included among the donations. Inside one of the wardrobe’s compartments he found savings books that were worth €100,000, plus €50,000 in cash. “They were all new €500 notes. I thought it was fake money,” he told German national newspaper Bild. He scoured the web for clues to find out whether the cash was real, and came to the conclusion that it was. He then informed migration authorities who told the police, saying that his religion prevented him from taking the money for himself. “Allah would never allow me to finance my own interests with someone else’s wealth,” he said.

Splendid Kerry on Top Gear WOW, didn’t it look goooood….Sunday night saw the airing of episode 5 of Top Gear’s recent filming in Kerry. Matt LeBlanc’s sole segment, driving a £250,000 Rolls Royce Dawn from Killarney through the twisting roads towards Moll’s Gap en route to Kenmare was spectacular to behold – the sun shining down, an iconic automobile and an incredible road….driving heaven. The camerawork was incredible, with the stunning scenery shot in saturated colour with beaming sunshine and a contrasting blue convertible weaving its way through the countryside – again, wow. The opening scene of the 1960s film, The Italian Job, regarded as one of the iconic car movie sequences ever, pales in comparison. Unfortunately Matt LeBlanc’s segment didn’t make reference to the location. A commercial opportunity lost…or not, as the case may be, as the visually impressive segment that it was will surely stimulate inquisitive minds to find out. And when they do, they will feel as if it is a secret uncovered and make it their mission to explore this location. This could be packaged as very clever marketing. However, one small problem – Chris

scenes has upset relations. LeBlanc has improved as the season has gone on but as a potential anchor host, I can’t see it. A further blow to the BBC Top Gear franchise the week has seen the History channel dropping Top Gear US. Clarkson out, Evans out, and Brexit – Britain is in turmoil. And as for the celebrity segment, what can be said, car-crash TV. And on that bombshell…

Evans f**ked it up. There is huge potential exposure but viewing figures plummeted from over five million last season to a record low of 2.3 million for episode 4. Well done to Kerry, though, episode 5 saw the first increase in viewing figures since “shouty” Evans took over the show this year. Three hundred thousand extra viewers tuned in for last Sunday’s episode and you can’t help to think that this was in the most part from Irish viewers. The Dingle segment was also good viewing. Trying to see over Evans’ inadequate presentation was always going to be a challenge but Dingle won out. Well done, Dingle.

The episode opened with a solo segment with Evans, it just got lost – a car person should have done this, it is not as if they don’t have a choice – Harris or Schmitz. On the upside both Harris and Reid delivered confident and entertaining segments. The potential here is chomping at the bit, but poor editing is keeping them at bay. Evans, with editorial say, is reported to be upset at their popularity. A popularity that is the future lifeline of the show. To add to Evans’ woes, recent reports have suggested that LeBlanc will quit if Evans is not removed. Evans’ diva personality behind the

Killarney woman pens book in honour of balcony collapse survivor KILLARNEY author Kathryn Crowley has released a collection of memoirs and short stories in aid of one of the survivors of the tragic balcony collapse in California last year. Kathryn’s book, Room For One More, was launched last night by her cousin Angela Beary, mother of Aoife, and the proceeds will go towards Aoife’s rehabilitation fund. Aoife’s grandmother, Maureen, originally from Listowel, is a sister of Killarney pharmacist Donie Sheahan. Room For One More, which is published by Emu Ink, is Kathryn’s second collection to be released in as many years and it is made up of memoirs from her life, each one accompanied by a short fictional story which it inspired. It was launched in Ballyboden St Enda’s GAA Club in Dublin. Kathryn, a Dublin-based school principal, described Aoife as “one of the bravest and most

determined young people I have the privilege to know”. “I hope any funds raised from the sale of my collection of stories will help defray the significant costs of her journey to recovery and help to make her future brighter in some small way,” she said. Room for One More, a touching memoir from the collection, holds a special place in the hearts of the cousins. Angela said: “I am so grateful to Kathryn for all she has done to support our family in the last year. She has been a true friend and, as they say, cousins are friends from the same family tree. “Kathryn and I spent many summers together as children. When going on family holidays, my mother believed there was always some more room left in the car for cousins! We reminisce often on these happy times growing up, but Kathryn’s memories are much clearer than mine. “I have loved immersing myself in these stories.”

Room for One More will be available in paperback, eBook and to rent digitally from emuink.ie. It is available to pre-order at http://www.emuink.ie/ synopsis.php?b=133 The paperback will also be available from Sheahan’s Pharmacy, Main Street, Killarney.

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. B.L.

Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). MEK United FC

EK United recently completed a very M successful and busy season and are already planning for the new season ahead. The last season was a huge season for us. Our Academy had a very good year, with teams from each age section playing in Blitzes across the season. Meanwhile, the U12 and U13

squads competed in the Kerry Schoolboys League for the first time ever, with the club hosting teams and travelling the breadth of the county for matches. A huge thanks must go to all the coaches, parents, players, sponsors and management team for the huge efforts put in to date. We are currently planning the year ahead and the next few months look like being a busy few months for MEK united. Club AGM: Our club AGM takes place this Friday evening at Fossa Community Centre, at 8pm. We would ask all parents to attend as this is a vital time for our fledgling club. We have 120 children playing with our various squads and are always on the look our for any help we can get. We need new coaches and would appeal to anyone to get involved, no experience is necessary! Come along on Friday night and have a say in the future of this great club! Church Gate Collections: In order to help raising some badly needed funds, we are holding a Church Gate Collection at Fossa Church on the weekend of the 9/10 July next. We held a hugely successful church gate collection at Listry Church recently and would sincerely like to thank everyone who donated. Footgolf: MEK United are delighted to announce our Footgolf Classic, which takes place at Dunloe on Sunday the 24th of July next. Footgolf is fast becoming a hugely popular game and we are holding a footgolf classic to raise funds for the club. We would hope that there would be some great interest in this event, as footgolf would be right up our street as a soccer club, so to speak. We will be looking for sponsorship for the tee boxes on the day, so please let us know if you would like to take part or even sponsor a tee box! So, get your teams of 4 together and put your skills together against your friends. For any details, please contact Pa on 087-7943220 or Liam Murphy on 0874145662 for details or to book your tee time.

vided by the French club throughout the trip. Senior News Our Senior Mens Training continues every week Tuesdays at the Killarney Sport & Leisure Centre at 8pm, further info contact Darren/Alan. Further details on Cougars club events log onto the website www.killarneycougars.com or facebook.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett advises that our Men’s Club will have a very busy schedule over the next two months or so, with a full diary of Club competitions, and a busy programme of Local and National inter-team competitions due to be played. Liam was disappointed to see our Club Senior team go out in the West Munster semi-final in the Senior Cup, while at the same time Liam was delighted with the battle that the team had put up in the match, the golf was of a very high standard in this, the closest possible result which, most unfortunately, went against us. The team under the tutelage of Sheamie O’Connor won their first round match against Doneraile on Saturday last, the winning margin was 3 matches to 1 with the last match called in, Simon Gallivan, Donal Considine and Eric Dunlea all won while Stephen Kelliher lost, and Stephen (Peb) O’Neill’s match was called in. Sunday saw the team up against Tralee, and in a ding-dong encounter, Killarney were eventually vanquished when Simon Gallivan lost his match to an 18 foot birdie putt on the 20th hole, Simon had earlier come back from being 2 down with 3 to play with a birdie on the 16th and par on the 17th, but he was just edged out by the birdie on the 2nd tie hole in the top match, which finished up as being the last match out on the course, earlier Cormac Finn lost by 4/2 in match 2, Eric Dunlea won 4/3, in match 3, Donal Considine won 5/4 in match 4 and Stephen (Peb) O’Neill lost 2/1, in the last match. Next up will the Club’s Junior Cup team, when they take on Kenmare at the Ring of Kerry course on Saturday morning the 2nd of July, the team under the watchful eyes of Team Manager’s Liam Healy and Brian Fitzgerald are currently in training, with a good mixture of youth and experienced players on the panel, any potential supporters please note that this game is coinciding with the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, so getting there will need to be given careful consideration. Sunday the 26th of June competition was the singles stableford on Killeen, the winner was Harry O’Neill with an excellent score of 41 points, and Harry won by two shots from Greg Lanigan, what makes these scores all the more impressive is the fact that standard scratch for the day fell at just 34 points, so handicap reductions all round. Results were as follows, 1st Harry O’Neill (12) 41 points, 2nd Greg Lanigan (5) 39 points, 3rd James Devane (9) 38 points, 4th Brian Clarke (11) 37 points, 5th George Vass (6) 37 points, Category 1 Eugene O’Sullivan (4) 35 points, Category 2 Fergus Houlihan (10) 36 points,

Category 3 Gerard Quinlan (15) 35 points, Category 4 Seamus Doheny (20) 31 points. Captain Liam wishes to remind all Men’s Club Members that the Men’s Committee are currently taking any names of any of those who may be interested in participating in the trip to “Southern Down” which will be taking place from the 26th to the 29th of August, final costs are now being finalised, and the trip will include 3 rounds of Golf. The competition on Sunday next the 3rd of July, will be a Club sponsored “open day” due to be played on Killeen, the competition is timed so as to allow any Member or Visitor to play, and with sufficient time to get to the Munster Football Final against Tipperary that afternoon.

KERRY AND TIPPERARY MEET IN THE MUNSTER FINAL

minor final in the curtain-raiser at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday (throw-in 12 noon). Kerry are, of course, All-Ireland champions for the past two years and they can still call on the likes of Sean O’Shea, Billy Courtney, Daniel O’Brien, Graham O’Sullivan, Bryan Sweeney and Mike Breen from last year’s successful panel. Peter Keane has taken over the reins from Jack O’Connor and it remains to be seen if the Caherciveen man can work the oracle in the same fashion as his near neighbour from Dromid did. Cork have not won the Munster title since 2010 but they do come to Killarney with a big reputation this year. Last year they went down to the Kingdom by just a point after extra time in a classic in Austin Stack Park without having the chance to redeem themselves through the back door system. No doubt this year’s squad will want to reverse that result. Games between these two sides rarely fail to ignite and early comers to the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday could be in for a treat. Referee is Alan Kissane of Waterford.

JUNIOR FINAL

Kerry and Cork met in the junior final on Wednesday evening, in the first of three Munster football finals this week. Kerry football captain Bryan Sheehan at Fitzgerald Stadium last Thursday for training in advance of the Munster final against Tipperary. Picture: Eamonn Keogh (macmonagle.com)

FEW would have predicted at the start of the championship that Tipperary would be Kerry’s opponents in the Munster Football Championship final but that is exactly the way it has panned out with the Premier county upsetting the applecart when handing Cork a two points defeat in the semi-final. The standout factor from that surprise victory by the Tipp men was the fact that they recovered at the death after surrendering a nine points lead in the closing quarter and that in itself says a lot about the character of Liam Kerins’ side. Shorn of 11 players from last year’s championship panel, the Tralee native has had to mould an almost new side for this year’s campaign and that defeat of Cork must rank as one of the great championship upsets for many a long day. It’s all of 18 years since Kerry and Tipperary last met in the provincial decider and that game in Thurles will be

remembered for the fact that Maurice Fitzgerald contributed 10 points (8 frees) of Kerry’s tally in a 0-17 to 1-10 scoreline before an attendance of 27,200. Having beaten Cork in the semi-final, Kerry were subsequently defeated by Kildare in the All-Ireland semi-final. Kerry will not need any reminding that Tipperary put it up to the then-All Ireland champions for long periods of last year’s semi-final meeting between the sides in Thurles before the Kingdom emerged victorious by 2-14 to 2-8. Injury problems in the Kerry camp are beginning to clear up slowly but surely and the likes of Johnny Buckley and James O’Donoghue for instance, have returned to full training and it will be interesting to see if they will force their way back onto Sunday’s team. Anthony Maher, too, will have had another few weeks of training under his belt after a long layoff with an injury that took longer than expected to mend.

The Kerry management team would, I am sure, have preferred a far tougher test of their present well being than they got from a Clare side whose challenge was undermined from the off after conceding a rather fortuitous goal but that said, the Bannermen did post a very decent 17 points on the scoreboard though they never remotely looked like causing an upset at any stage of the game. Tipp’s defeat of Cork, and that high scoring return by Clare will no doubt help focus the minds of the Kerry players on their home patch of Fitzgerald Stadium and we wish all concerned the best of luck in their quest for a 78th Munster title. The throw-in is at 2pm and the referee for the final is David Gough of Meath.

Dr Crokes

boys from Castleknock, Dublin and the girls from Tír na nÓg Randalstown, Antrim. It was a pleasure to welcome both teams to the club and our young players have built up lifelong friendships from the visit. Lewis road was a host venue for games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The clubhouse also hosted a great night of entertainment on Friday night, with plenty of storytelling, singing, and dancing. All the participating teams marched through town for the Féile parade on Saturday evening. U14 Boys A late fisted Crokes goal separated the Killarney rivals in the opening game in Direen on Friday evening. Legion were quickest out of the blocks and led at the break. Our boys turned it around in the second half and went on to win by 2-2 to 1-3. In the second game on Friday, New York possessed a greater physical presence and proved too strong for the Crokes. New York won 3-6 to 0-1.

On Saturday morning, Dublin side Castleknock defeated our boys in Lewis Road. The visitors took an early lead which proved difficult to overturn, winning 1-7 to 0-2 in the end. The Crokes got back to winning ways when they travelled out the road to Fossa on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Laune Rangers in the shield quarter-final. The young black and amber boys scored an impressive 2-7 which proved the difference. Final score, 2-7 to 1-1. On Sunday afternoon, Legion managed to overturn the result of the opening game when they won the Shield semi-final in Na Gaeil, Tralee. The Crokes players were tired and battled admirably but it wasn’t to be their day. Well done to the players and management for their efforts over the weekend. The players will have many memories of Féile 2016 and will learn from the experience. U14 Girls The well known sports brand slogan

Féile 2016 The Féile 2016 weekend will live long in the memory of all involved and our club can be more than proud of their contribution in making the weekend a success. Our young boys and girls played an exciting brand of football and carried themselves in an impeccable manner both on and off the field all weekend. The clubhouse was a hive of activity all week in preparation for the competition and that work-ethic continued throughout the weekend. Thanks to everyone who helped out over the weekend, your efforts are truly appreciated. Our guests remarked how good the atmosphere in the clubhouse and the selfless ‘can-do’ attitude of our volunteers was from Friday through to Sunday. It is a credit to all the members and parents who provided such great hospitality for all. Special mention to the two teams that we had the privilege our hosting; the

SYMPATHY

We extend our sympathy to the family of Paddy O’Shea of Dr Crokes last weekend. Paddy, one of the real gentlemen of the GAA, was an all-round sportsman. He had the distinction of winning three minor hurling county championship medals with Killarney between 1950 and 1952 and went on to have a distinguished football career with Dr Crokes winning numerous East Kerry championship medals, including seven-inrow. A great ambassador for the club, Paddy was an authority on GAA matters and you certainly left his company enriched following a discussion with him. The untimely death of Denis Teahan of Glenbeigh came as a big shock to the Mid Kerry community. Denis was father of Caolim who is a member of the Kerry Minor panel. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anamacha.

KERRY AND CORK CLASH IN MINOR FINAL

Kerry and Cork renew rivalry at Minor level when they clash in the Munster reads ‘Just Do It’ but our u14 girls did it in style. From the moment we greeted our Antrim guests from Tír na nÓg Randalstown on Friday afternoon, until we returned in a triumphant cavalcade to our home in Lewis Rd on Sunday evening, everyone associated with the girls squad entered into and enjoyed the spirit of Feile. The 26 strong squad topped their group with consecutive victories over Fossa, O Hanrahans Carlow and Tír na nÓg. In a close Cup quarter-final at Currow on Saturday evening, we had to dig deep in the closing stages to defeat a dogged Loughrea. Onto Blennerville on Sunday morning and in bonus territory for a Cup semi final against Garrycastle. Down at half-time we rallied in the second period to remarkably progress to a National Feile Cup Final, against our neighbours Fossa, who were seeking to reverse the result of our opening fixture. With tired minds and bodies on the limit, an end-to-end battle which could have gone either way

in the closing stages, was eventually settled by a late Crokes goal and it was only at the final whistle that players, mentors and supporters could savour the joy of a successful campaign. Having provided a consolatory guard of honour to our Antrim guests as they left the field after their Shield Final defeat in the preceding game, it was especially uplifting for them to return the compliment as we left the field as champions and they shared our success. The Spirit of Feile was captured in this moment. Memories to last a lifetime. East Kerry

O’ Sullivan Cup East Kerry Junior Championship Glenflesk 5-17 Cordal 0-7 A brace of goals early in the first half, by Padraig Healy and Gavin Kelly set visitors Glenflesk on the road to victory in this round 1 game in the East Kerry Junior League game, against a depleted Cordal team, last week. A scatter of points and a third Glenflesk goal, from the boot of Gavin Kelly, put the outcome beyond doubt at the break. Cordal, to their credit played with determination and notched up some lovely points. However, the visitors found the net twice in the second half, Finian Wall and Kevin O’Donovan on target. Glenflesk progress to the quarter final on a full time score of Glenflesk 5-17 Cordal 0-7. The East Region Minor League The East Region Minor League got under way last Thursday with 5 games. In division 1 Dr Crokes travelled to Kilgarvan where they took on a combination of Kenmare District clubs. The sides were evenly matched and went in at the break level on 8 points each. A goal early in the second half, by Dr Crokes James Kelly, proved the difference between the teams in the end. Final score: Dr Crokes 1-13 Kenmare District 0-13. The second game played in Division 1 saw Firies run out convincing winners against Killarney Legion, The first half was an evenly matched contest and the teams were level 1-5 a piece at half time. However, a Firies purple patch saw the home side score four goals to one for the visitors leaving the full time score Firies 5-15 Killarney Legion 2-9. Both games played in division 2 were closely matched affairs. Spa took the league points when they travelled to Beaufort. Both sides scored 3 goals, one each in the first half and a further two in the second half. However, Spa’s dominance in the middle area of the field combined with their ability to notch up points proved the difference

in the end. Final score Spa 3-14 Beaufort 3-6. The second game played in division 2 saw Currow travel to Scartaglen where they played Cordal/ Scartaglen team. Killarney Parade Féile Pheil na nÓg The Killarney Féile Pheil na nÓg parade took place last Saturday night, starting and finishing in Fitzgerald Stadium. The parade was led by the Killorglin pipe band, followed by a colour party of Under 10’s carrying the flags of the 32 counties, the 4 provinces, New York, London and Scotland, representing all the counties taking part in Féile over the weekend, throughout the county and region. It was an honour that Uachtarán CLG Aodán Ó Fearghail, and the Chairman of the Munster Council Jerry O’ Sullivan let the dignitaries in the parade along with Iarr Uachtarán CLG Sean Kelly and the Chairman of The East Kerry Committee, Tim Ryan. There followed the Under 14 players, boys and girls, from 18 Kerry clubs along with players from the clubs they were hosting. Firies Coiste na nÒg

Feile 2016 On Friday, 24th June, Firies GAA opened their gates in Pairc Eamonn for Feile 2016 and what a weekend it was. Our club were proud to host Ballyroan Abbey of County Laois for this momentous weekend. Firies kicked off the proceedings with their first match against Fossa, winning 3-08 to Fossa’s 3-04. Next on the schedule were Firies’ guest Ballyroan Abbey who triumphed against Fossa’s’ visitors; Galbally of Limerick on a score line of 2-10 to 0-03. After a diminutive break, Ballyroan Abbey took at it again, this time meeting Galbally. Our visitors vanquished Galbally 2-10 to 0-03. The final meeting of the evening had the home side against Galbally. Again, Firies took the spoils, defeating the Limerick club 1-04 to 1-00. Following Friday evenings’ Feile 2016 debut, it was time to meet our guests on the pitch on Saturday morning in Pairc Eamonn. After a strong start by both teams, Ballyroan Abbey upped the tempo, beating Firies 0-03 to Ballyroan Abbey 1-08. All roads lead to John Mitchells in Tralee for the boy’s next match on Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately, our brave battlers bowed out from the competition following the defeat against Castlebar Mitchells, 2-06 to 0-03. This did not deter the boys from lining up in the Killarney Feile 2016 parade on Saturday evening proudly representing our great club. After a hectic, but fantastic weekend, we would like to express our gratitude to our U14 host families who opened their homes to the young men from Ballyroan Abbey, all in the name of the club. Thank you doesn’t seem enough, it will be forever appreciated. To our coaches, officers, umpires and marshals; your overwhelming support of the club is the very essence of grassroots GAA; your enthusiasm and dedication is invaluable to us. To the many, many volunteers who helped out by either making tea or coffee or donating food during the weekend; your contributions encompassed the very ethos of community. Thank you. A special word of thanks to Hendersons and Bridies Right Buy Shop who freely donated to the event. Many thanks for showcasing our club and community in the light it more than deserves. Without your help, it would not have been possible. Academy Training U6, U8 and U10 Academy training recommences on Saturday morning, 2nd July at 10:30am in Pairc Eamonn.

Seniors The seniors play Dr Crokes B in Lewis Road on Saturday 2nd July at 6pm, note the time, in Round 7 of the County League, all support welcome. John West Feile na nÓg 2016 Division 2 – Boys Fossa went to Firies on Friday evening for the opening 2 games of Feile – and after a very competitive game with Firies, lost out on a score line of 3-8 to 3-4, goals coming from Emmett O’Shea (2) and Rory Doyle from the penalty spot. In the next game – we played Ballyroan Abbey and got well beaten, 5-7 to 1-2, the goal coming from Rossa Bellew. Up next on Saturday morning in Fossa we played Galbally, the club we were hosting and after a very sporting game – we lost out on the score line 3-7 to 1-7, the goal by Rory Doyle from the spot again. All that meant Fossa went into the quarter final of the plate, played in the John Mitchels – where we drew Ballymac and this turned out to be a brilliant game. Fossa got the edge in the first half and held a slender lead at half-time – 1-4 to 1-3. 1-1 came from Rory Doyle, the goal from the penalty spot and 3 points by Emmett O’Shea. The second half saw Ballymac score a cracking goal to square the tie, but Emmett O’Shea put Fossa noses in front with a huge free from outside the 45. Harry Buckley kicked the insurance point to put Fossa in the semi final for Sunday morning. Final Score – Fossa 1-10 Ballymac 2-5; Early morning semi-final, played in Spa – Fossa were up against Galbally again – but this time turned the tables on our guests, winning 1-7 to 3 points, the goal, a screamer form Emmett O’Shea. Emmett also added 3 points, and Rory Doyle scored 4 points. On to the final and Fitzgerald Stadium, against the Antrim champions, Patrick Sarfields, and though the Fossa boys tried their best, they were completely over run, by a much bigger, and physical team losing out 2-9 to 2 points, the 2 points from Emmett O’Shea. Though disappointed, I am sure they never thought they would be in a final on Sunday after those first three results and the full panel of 24 all got to play in the final. In goals, Rory Coughlan and Dean Sheehan rotated the keeper’s job, In defence, we had Joe Cahillane, Evan Mannix, Donnacha Greeley, Eoin Myers, Padraic Talbot, Cathal Whelton, Mark McGlynn, Simon Coffey, Cian Doyle and Sean Dineen –where we had some stand out performances Midfield – Colm Talbot and Rory Doyle played their hearts outs Forwards, Jack Clifford, Emmett O’Shea, Harry Buckley, Rossa Bellew, Darren Cronin, Conor Horgan, Emmett Cronin, James O’Shaughnessy, Jackson O’Mahony and Harry Kelly – where we saw some fabulous scores and huge performances. It was an enjoyable weekend – albeit ending in disappointment but we have to say a thank you to the management team for the effort put in and especially

Fiona Whelton, who was just brilliant, from paperwork, to rub-downs and snacks and just totally organised lady. We also wish to thank everyone from Galbally who we hosted for the weekend. The boys had great fun with the Galbally lads and it was certainly a highlight of the weekend for everyone. Also a big thanks to Karen McGlynn – who kept facebook updated with photo’s from every game and lastly – our captain for the competition – Harry Buckley, led by example and credit to his family and the club. U14 Girls Feile After 3 brilliant days of fun and football, our U-14 girls just came up short in the Feile Cup final v Dr Crokes. With great wins over Tír Na nÓg from Antrim, O’Hanrahans from Carlow, Kerins O’Rahillys and Kilmurry/Ibricane from Clare, our girls went down to a last minute goal to Dr Crokes in the Feile cup final. While fiercely disappointed, we are also extremely proud of our girls who were magnificent all weekend both on and off the field. We also wish to thank O’Hanrahans who we hosted for the weekend. When we look back on the weekend, it will be the great fun and excitement that we had with the O’Hanrahan’s girls that will shine through. We wish the U12 girls all the best in their Co League final on Thurs next and we look forward to the All Ireland U14 final next Saturday when Maud and Sara will tog out for Kerry in the All Ireland U 14 final in Nenagh v Kildare. Thanks to everyone in Fossa GAA who

helped make this weekend so special, to the host families who looked after the visiting kids so well, all those that organised the BBQ on Saturday evening, looked after the shop and made teas and coffees all through the weekend and everybody who helped out in the car park and on the field. The parade on Saturday evening was a spectacle to behold. Overall the weekend was an excellent team effort and showcased the best that Fossa GAA has to offer. FÉILE Huge thank you to everyone who helped out and participated over the weekend, especially club co-ordinator Tommy Galvin and Mike Leahy, Cooraclare girls and New York boys and of course our own players and mentors who gave such a good account of themselves throughout the competition. Both boys and girls teams reached the semi-final of the shield in their respective divisions and the boys beat Dr Crokes to advance to the final. They ultimately came up short against Celbridge but can take pride in the fact that they went further in Division 1 than any other Kerry team at the event. Well done to all involved. JUNIORS Mixed week for the juniors who had a superb win away to Milltown/ Castlemaine on Monday but followed it up with a disappointing loss to Gneeveguilla on Wednesday. Against Milltown/Castlemaine they led by four at half time but faced a strong breeze in the second period. Their task was made even more difficult when they went down to fourteen men with twenty minutes to go but the lads dug in and claimed an emphatic win. A poor first half display at home to Gneeveguilla left them trailing by two at the break and, despite an improved second half performance, they were unable to close the gap. SUMMER CAMP The club summer camp will run again this year from Tuesday, August 2nd to Friday, August 5th. The camp is always a great week of activity with great assistance as always from the club’s older juvenile boys and girls. Anyone interested in helping out with camp can contact Enda. Féile Weekend A great weekend of football was held in Kerry over the weekend. Spa started their campaign at home on Friday with the opening game against Gneeveguilla. Next up in our group was Shondonagh, Co. Westmeath. On Saturday we met our, host club St. Mary’s, Kiltoghert Co Leitrim which was the last game of our group. Later that day we played Brosna in Cordal in the Shield. Unfortunately, we didn’t win but that didn’t dampen the spirits of our young players. A credit to their families as all players behaved impeccably throughout the weekend. The parade on Saturday evening throughout the town was a brilliant experience with a great atmosphere. Huge support for all teams. Sunday ended with a great surprise when President of the GAA Aogán O’Fearghaíl visited the clubhouse to meet the teams. A great success with huge thanks to the players, organising committee, Coiste na nÓg, 11 host families, parents, coaches, volunteers at the BBQ, First Aiders, Officers, referees, East Kerry, Kerry GAA. Special mention to Donal Barry, secretary of Feile South West and Mike Piggott for fixtures. Well done to all involved.
