New engineering roles as iDirect to set up centre in Killarney SATELLITE ground infrastructure provider iDirect will tap into the technology-rich Killarney region to create more than 30 specialised engineering jobs over the course of five years. VT iDirect, Inc (iDirect), a world leader in satellite-based IP communications technology and a company of Vision Technologies Systems, Inc (VT Systems), today announced it will establish an engineering and innovation centre in Killarney. The facility will help to create new engineering jobs in a technologyrich region of the world. iDirect, which now has offices in The Reeks Gateway building in Killarney, is a world leader in satellite-based IP communications technology. The project is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation through Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Ireland. iDirect established its presence in Ireland following its 2014 acquisition of intellectual property (IP) from locally based Altobridge. The new engineering roles that will be created at the facility will focus on software, firmware, hardware, radio frequency and systems engineering technologies. “Satellite connectivity requires some of the best engineers in the world lending their unique set of skills to help solve highly critical challenges,” said Mary Cotton, CEO, iDirect. She added: “At iDirect, we are always looking for exceptional engineering talent, and we are thrilled to be opening a new Engineering and Innovation Centre right in the heart of Ireland, a country that is rich in talented, highly skilled technical engineers.”
IDA CEO Martin Shanahan pictured during a recent visit to iDirect’s new offices at The Reeks Gateway building in Killarney with iDrect’s VP of HR Amy Cahoon and senior engineer Tim Moriarty.
Welcome for new jobs in Killarney NEWS that satellite ground infrastructure provider iDirect is to create more than 30 specialised engineering jobs in Kerry has been welcomed in the county. The company announced on Tuesday that it would establish an engineering and innovation centre in Killarney’s Reeks Gateway development. The new engineering roles that will be created at the facility will focus on software, firmware, hardware, radio frequency and systems engineering technologies. Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin stated the news was “a great boost on the jobs front for Killarney and Kerry”. Deputy Griffin also praised the role of the IDA and Department of Jobs in landing this investment in Killarney. Also welcoming the news was Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor, who complimented the company on its new investment and said: “Bringing 30 quality technical jobs to County Kerry is very welcome and Killarney will benefit significantly from this investment. I am very supportive of attracting skilled jobs to regional centres. “This is an endorsement of the Government’s work in driving FDI to locations outside the main urban areas and, also on skills provision. It is very rewarding that
projects like this, requiring specialist engineering expertise, can be located in a regional location. This new initiative will enhance Ireland’s reputation for other new specialist ICT investments.” IDA Ireland’s CEO Martin Shanahan said: “This is a unique technology project in a regional location like Killarney. It will be a valuable addition to the telecommunications sector in Ireland, and will be well positioned to respond to continuous growth in demand for satellite technologies in the EMEA region. "The availability of appropriate technology talent and skills in the South West was an important consideration for the company and points to County Kerry being an excellent location for other companies in the sector. I wish the company every success here.”
The Reeks Gateway.
Positivity generated by people power IT’S the personal stories behind the annual charity extravaganza that make the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle so special. I mean, where else would you get volunteers of all ages manning teapots and water decanters and stewarding a 180km/112mile route from dawn till dusk? Between the volunteers and the ranks of cyclists some heart-warming stories emerged on
Saturday during the 33rd annual cycle, see our coverage on pages 22, 24 and 26. All in all, it has been a positive week in Killarney, what with triple celebrations for the Kerry senior, minor and junior football teams following a trio of Munster championship titles. This was followed by news that the town is to welcome 30 new specialised engineering jobs which are to be provided by world-leading communications technology company iDirect. Meanwhile, a sense of exuberance prevailed
on the streets of the town on July 4 for the now-annual extravaganza to mark America’s Independence Day and another carnival atmosphere is expected this Sunday at the 231st annual Killarney Regatta.

Question
I have applied for a job in a sports club and have been told that I must be vetted by the Gardaí. What does this mean?
Answer Since 29 April 2016, people working with children or vulnerable adults must be vetted by the Garda Síochána National Vetting Bureau. Workers include staff, volunteers and those on student placements working for an organisation through which they have unsupervised access to children and/or vulnerable adults. Under the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012– 2016, organisations that require Garda vetting of individuals must register with the National Vetting Bureau. These include childcare services, schools, hospitals, health services and organisations providing leisure, sporting or physical activities to children and/or vulnerable people. If you are applying for a job with a registered organisation, the organisation will send you a vetting invitation form. You must complete the form and return to the organisation with proof of your identity. After validating your identity, the organisation will send you an email with a link to the vetting application form. You then apply to be vetted online using e-Vetting. If you wish, you may apply using a paper form instead. If you are aged under 18 you must submit a signed parent or guardian consent form. After reviewing your vetting application, the organisation submits it to the National Vetting Bureau. The National Vetting Bureau processes the application and sends a vetting disclosure to the organisation. A vetting disclosure may include details of convictions and pending prosecutions or a statement that there is no criminal record. The organisation will review the disclosure and will send you a copy of it. You can track the progress of your e-Vetting application online. Further information is available from the National Vetting Bureau at https://vetting. garda.ie/ and from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Teeing up for Ricky Kelly Memorial Tournament NEXT weekend (July 17) sees the 25th anniversary staging of the popular Ricky Kelly Memorial Pitch & Putt Tournament at Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club which honours the memory of the late club PRO who sadly passed away in 1991. The event has attracted many participants down through the years with the change of format to a three-ball Scramble in 2008 adding to the fun element of proceedings. Last year’s event was won by the team of Tadghie and James Fleming along with Fiona O’Donnell. Entry at €100 per team is open to all registered members of the Deerpark and Gleneagle clubs along with non-registered members of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland (PPUI). Indeed all three-person teams must contain at least one non-registered member of the PPUI. Play officially starts at 4pm on Friday, July 15, and continues all the way through to Monday, July 18, with 2pm the last official tee-off time. Handicap regulations see those with only golf handicaps get three-quarters of an allowance up to a maximum of 12 for gents and 18 for ladies. The official prizegiving will take place on Monday, July 18, along with a barbecue and entertainment, from 6.30pm. The event is sponsored once more by the Tatler Jack Bar in Killarney which continues an association with the event started back in 2004. update KERRY was celebrating a hat-trick of victories over the past week as fancy footwork from its senior, minor and junior teams saw the county claim three Munster titles in five days. Kerry Juniors set the ball rolling on Wednesday evening last when they defeated old rivals Cork and then on Sunday, the Kerry seniors and minors completed the treble with victories over Tipperary and Cork respectively. In a sunsoaked Fitzgerald Stadium, the Kerry senior team clinched its 78th Munster title, overcoming the Tipperary challenge on a scoreline of 3-17 to 2-10. The victory sealed a four-in-a-row of titles for the Kingdom and Eamonn Fitzmaurice has retained a proud record of not having lost a Munster Championship game during his tenure as manager. There was a fine crowd of 21,512 present on Sunday and that attendance certainly surpassed the expectations of many, including the Munster Council. As for the quarter-finals, it’s a guessing game at this stage as to who Kerry’s opponents will be on the August Bank Holiday weekend. Earlier on Sunday, the Kerry Minor footballers retained the Tadhg Crowley Cup for the fourth year in a row when defeating old rivals Cork in the opener at midday. The home side got off to the perfect start, with two goals by Bryan Sweeney and Sean O’Shea, both expertly set up by the magnificent David Clifford. Cork did come more into the game as the half wore on. However, a great strike by David Clifford who is not yet 17, kickstarted the Kerry revival that saw them run out deserving winners by 3-14 to 3-8. Kerry’s hopes of making it a hat trick of All-Ireland titles are still intact and they will now meet Donegal or Derry in the quarter-finals during the August Bank Holiday weekend. Kerry Juniors completed a hat-trick of Munster titles when defeating Cork by the minimum margin (0-14 to 0-13) at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park the previous Wednesday evening.

Dylan’s love of football lives on in birthday tournament IT WAS all systems go this week as family and friends of popular youngster Dylan Crowley put the finishing touches to a football tournament organised in his memory. In what is a touching tribute to the sports fan, the Dylan Crowley Invitational Tournament for under-11 players now takes place on an annual basis. Throw-in for this year’s event will be tomorrow, Saturday, July 9, on what would have been Dylan’s 13th birthday. The date is also Dylan’s third anniversary. The games unfold in the
Gneeveguilla GAA grounds. “Dylan had a great love of football and the Gneeveguilla football club was very special to him,” said a spokeswoman for the organisers. “He loved every time he wore their jersey – either for training or for a game – so this tournament is a special tribute to him.” There will be a round robin of games and in the end there will be three finals on the day. “Refreshments will be served and everybody is welcome to attend,” added the spokeswoman. Emer takes the helm at Cahernane House Hotel A LEADING light in Killarney’s hotel business, Emer Corridan takes the helm as general manager of the Cahernane House Hotel. Emer, who is originally from Navan, Co Meath, has lived in Killarney for almost two decades, having been a member of staff at The Malton for 17 years where she held the role of banqueting manager. She moved from Navan to Kerry in 1999 to take up a position with the Great Southern Hotel, now The Malton. Emer is joined on the team at the Cahernane House Hotel in her new role by assistant manager Martin McGrath and head chef Paul O’Connor. “I started on Saturday but this is my first week,” said Emer. “I am really looking forward to working in my new role in the Cahernane. We will be starting dinners in the Cahernane House Hotel on July 15 and later on will be offering a light lounge menu and afternoon teas.” The four-star hotel, located in 6.4 acres overlooking Killarney National Park and lakes, was put on the market by the Browne family through CBRE and Tom Spillane & Co. Prem Group bought the four-star Cahernane House Hotel in Kerry in a deal worth €3m in May. The property includes 38 bedrooms located in the original house, alongside the Herbert Room Restaurant, which seats 80 people. The hotel also includes at basement level the Cellar Bar for residents and locals. Emer has an enviable reputation as a wedding co-ordinator and is looking forward to building on the wedding business at the Cahernane over the next year. “The Cahernane House Hotel caters for slightly smaller weddings, of up to 80 people,” she said. Indeed, the first-ever civil ceremony to be held in a hotel in Ireland took place in the Cahernane Hotel, in 2007. Tributes flowed to Emer from her former colleagues at The Malton as the owner, staff and management of The Malton held a going away party for her in the Killarney Park Hotel on Sunday. Emer is married to Denis Corridan, a physical therapist and Munster Rugby community officer. She has been a key committee member of the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club committee since its founding.

Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2016 attracts 11,000 participants
Pedal power all the way for charity champions
Cyclists at Coomakista, talking part in the 33rd Annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, the biggest one-day charity fundraising event in Munster, attracting thousands of leisure cyclists completing 180km of specular Kerry landscape, while at the same time fundraising for Kerry based charities. pictures: Valerie O’Sullivan
FROM the early hours of Saturday, enthusiastic banter floated through the air as cyclists made their way to the starting line for the 33rd annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. People of all ages across Kerry, whether they were taking part or volunteering, were up and about bright and early as Killarney’s cathaoirleach Brendan Cronin joined the Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne and cycle PRO Cathal Walshe to send the 11,000 participants on their way. And as they pedalled furiously around the 112-mile/180km route, they met many a fellow hero as hundreds of volunteers were out in force to help them on their way – a fellowship of the Ring in every sense. This year the aim is to exceed the €1.85 million raised last year. A carnival atmosphere prevailed in the New Street car park as a warm welcome greeted all who crossed the finish line. The after-party featured something for all ages, with cyclists welcoming the Skoda Stretch Zone and treats courtesy of Daly's SuperValu and Nature Valley.

SOME truly wonderful personal stories are always to be found among the ranks of cyclists and volunteers that make the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle the dazzling success that it is. Take, for instance, father and daughter Johnny and Rosin Fortune from Ferns, Co Wexford. Three years ago Roisin had a brain tumour and promised herself if she recovered she would cycle the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Both dad and daughter were very emotional at the finish line to have finally achieved the goal. Or what about Killorglin man John Whelan who was congratulated on completing his 30th Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle this year. Meanwhile, Matt Dowling finished the charity circuit for the fifth time alongside his cycling companion Pat Monaghan. Pat, who is 80 years of age, was taking part in his fourth Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle on Saturday. Three young ladies from New York first heard about
the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in 2015 and trained hard in order to take part this year. And the trio, Ashley Ashley Meenaghan, Kelly Meenaghan, and Allison Cronin, were all smiles as they crossed the finish line. Also winging their way from across the Atlantic were Patrick O’Keeffe and his partner Frankie Perez from Dallas, Texas. They were welcomed to the house of 90-year old Paddy Reidy in Caherciveen – as well as a feed Paddy produced methylated spirits for Frankie's hands which were sore from his gloves! And the best part - his daughter, Anne, put their wet socks in the dryer, so they left feeling warm and refreshed. Killarney lady Fionnula Spillane was taking part in her eighth Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle but took the opportunity to celebrate a big birthday by cycling with her six cycling buddies, five of her seven children and two daughters-in-law – Niamh travelled from France and Ciara from London to mark the occasion.

Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2016 attracts 11,000 participants
Taoiseach saddles up for cystic fibrosis charity THE Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, was among the 11,000 cyclists to make their way to the starting line bright and early on Saturday morning. Mr Kenny donned a jersey bearing the emblem of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, his chosen charity as he took part in the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. "Last January I had the pleasure of opening the new Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Mayo General Hospital,” said the Taoiseach. “I was inspired by the community commitment and the huge role volunteers played in making the unit a reality,” Following this the Taoiseach attended the charity’s annual conference in Sligo where he again met volunteers and those suffering with cystic fibrosis. ”Cystic fibrosis is the most common, genetically inherited disease in Ireland. Despite our small size, we have the highest proportion of people anywhere living with this serious, chronic, life-limiting illness. Commercials push the boat out for club revival IT WAS a case of rowing back the years last Friday as the Commercial Rowing Club relaunched the club as well as its boat The Louis. The club, which was established in 1886, is one of the oldest clubs in Killarney. “As well as having a long association with the business life of Killarney it has also been very successful in rowing circles both in Killarney and at various regattas around the country,” said John Kelly. Due to retirements and other factors the club became defunct for a 10-year period in the late 1990s. “In 2004 I and a group of local rowing enthusiasts convened a meeting and decided to embark on a revival campaign,” added John. With the aid of Sports Capital funding a new clubhouse was erected and thanks to club member and skilled craftsman Jimmy Doyle, dressing rooms were erected. “In addition, Jimmy re-built the racing boat to the condition in which it was when it was first launched in 1924 and named ‘The Louis’ after Tim O'Sullivan's daughter Louis O'Sullivan, later married to Dr Des Hayes, St Finan’s Hospital,” said John. Last Friday evening, July 1, Jimmy Doyle and members of the Hayes family were present as the club relaunched the boat, which is now in excellent condition. Not only that, but the club will be fully represented at this year’s regatta on Sunday, July 10.

A CARNIVAL atmosphere is on the cards, as Killarney will be rowing together this Sunday, July 10, for the 231st annual regatta. The regatta will unfold at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and the first race starts at 9.30am. Admission is free to this exciting family event, with the regatta programme consisting of 16 races catering for all ages from under-16 to veteran. “The regatta is run over three courses, all rowed in traditional Killarney Sixes wooden boats,” said Killarney Regatta secretary Kathy Brosnan. “Entries have been received from all six clubs in Killarney, Fossa, Workmen, Muckross, Flesk Valley, St Brendan’s and Commercials.” Expect all the usual top-class onshore entertainment, including music and dancing, a bonny baby competition, barbecue, marquee bar, and fun and games for children. The regatta dance and presentation of medals and trophies will take place in the Killarney Oaks Hotel on Tuesday, July 12, at 9pm, with tickets available for purchase on the door. Of course this event will also feature the selection of the Regatta Queen. “All we need now is the sun to shine down on us and a calm lake, for Sunday the 10th!” said Kathy.
HISTORIC EVENT LAUNCHED IN STYLE DIPPING an oar into history, the team behind Killarney Regatta looked towards the past as well as the future as they launched this year’s event in the Killarney Avenue Hotel last Monday week. During the event, chairman Pat Cronin thanked the sponsors for their generous support over the years. “I would also like to pay tribute to all those who help organise and run the regatta, along with the clubs’ trainers who devote endless time training on the lakes,” said Pat. The launch was also attended by the Regatta Queen contestants. Representing their clubs in the event will be Karen Parker (St Brendan’s), Aoife Farrell (Muckross), Sara O’Brien (Fossa), Miriam Fleming (Flesk Valley) and Leona Brown (Workmen). The president of Killarney Regatta Committee John O’Leary also made presentations to the St Finan’s men’s crews of 1977-1986 in the hall of fame. “These men established a whole new outlook in rowing in Killarney by setting up a winter training programme under the watchful eye of Gerald O’Connor, assisted later by two former oarsmen, namely Dan Cronin and Johnny Culloty,” he said. It was history in the making as they went on to win three senior titles in a row as well as senior fours, junior sizes, junior fours and ladies sixes.

THE spirit of America’s Old West was evident on the streets of Killarney on Monday evening with shoot ’em ups, fun and mayhem galore as the Wild West Troupe was in town as part of Killarney’s 4th of July Celebrations. Main Street Killarney was transformed into Main Street USA with lots of exciting events and street entertainment in advance of the big parade that evening. A charity barbecue took place at 4pm on Scott’s Street Killarney in aid of the Kerry Cork Cancer Health Link Bus. This was a free event sponsored by The Henggeler-Moriarty family. The main event of the day was, of course, the big parade starting at 8pm from Killarney Outlet Centre and winding its way through College Street and Plunkett Street to finally reach Main Street where the party got underway with master of ceremonies DJ Niall Botty O’Callaghan in control. Of course no 4th of July Celebration would be complete without the all-important fireworks display, which took place at midnight. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise topped the bill tonight at the third annual festival at a free outdoor screening of American classic Top Gun in the magnificent setting of Killarney House & Gardens. “We have been getting absolutely fantastic feedback on this year’s 4th of July Celebrations which were a great success,” said Paul Sherry of the organising committee. “The weather also played its part, adding to the great atmosphere. A total of 1500 cinema tickets were sold for the open-air screening of Top Gun and all in all the entire festival was hugely enjoyed.”

Jerry Cronin, in character at the raising the American and Irish flags.
IT WAS a case of “Good morning, America” bright and early on July 4 as the cathaoirleach of Killarney’s Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Cronin, and Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Kate O’Leary raised the US flag. The Stars and Stripes were hoisted above Killarney Town Hall to the accompaniment of a rousing rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, performed by the Killarney Golf Club Choir, Killarney Musical Society and the Killorglin ladies choral group. The moving ceremony marked the beginning of Killarney’s 4th of July Celebrations Killarney 4th of July Celebrations organising committee chairperson Diarmuid Leen said: “This is a rally call for all of us in Killarney to show our appreciation of our American friends and associates.” Killarney Chamber president Kate O’Leary paid tribute to the event’s partners and sponsors Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland, IPB Insurance, O’Donoghue Ring Hotel Group, Heineken Ireland, The Killarney Park & Ross Hotels, The International Hotel, MD O’Shea’s and The Henggeler-Moriarty Family together with Scott’s Hotel.

Oh what a night! Fireworks display lights up festival finale GASPS of “wow” could be heard reverberating around Killarney House & Gardens at midnight as a spectacular fireworks display lit up the night sky and brought to a colourful close the annual Killarney 4th of July Celebrations. Eager movie fans had earlier filed into the gardens, in Killarney National Park, to enjoy a wonderful open-air screening of Tom Cruise classic Top Gun, presented by Kerry Film Festival. This had been preceded by the big July 4 parade, which delighted all ages as it wound its way through the town, culminating in a street party par excellence to celebrate America’s Independence Day.

Registration update
Registration is now 90% full. You can register online www.runkillarney. com or by calling into O’Sullivan’s Outdoor Shop, New Street, Killarney.
Injury prevention
At the first sign of injury, most runners have the same reaction: Ignore it and keep training. Taking the time to find and fix an injury before it becomes chronic will give you a better chance to train injury free for the rest of the year. Here are my tips on preventing injury.
Rest
It seems like a strange thing to start with but rest is so important when it comes to avoiding injuries. You should have at least one complete rest day and then another day which is like an “active recovery” day where you walk, swim, and cycle. You will know you have pushed yourself just enough if you feel fatigued at the end of your training session but fully energized and ready to attack the next one.
Warm-up/cool-down
A warm-up will help to prepare your body for exercise, get the heart pumping faster and the muscles warm and more flexible. Warm and flexible muscles are less prone to injury. A good warm-up should not include stretching as it would increase your risk of injury.
Gradual-increase mileage
Don’t be tempted to increase your running distances or times too quickly. Stick to your training program. The general rule of thumb is not to increase your running distance by more than 10% a week.
Maintain/improve flexibility
A lack of flexibility is a big contributor to injuries. Introducing yoga or Pilates into your training plan can help gain strength and flexibility.
Strength work
Many new runners don’t undertake any form of strengthening work for their legs, thinking that all the running they are doing will be sufficient. Strength training is essential for preparing the body for training and racing.

Kerry Stars to shine thanks to Patrick production THE Kerry Stars Special Olympic Club has welcomed a windfall thanks to the author and cast of smash-hit production Patrick. Author Aidan O’Connor and the performers from the show gathered at The Malton on Monday night to make a donation to the Special Olympic Club. “The Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club is close to my heart,” said Aidan. “Oisin, my son, is member for many years and I've spoken and written many times publicly on the issue of special needs.” Between Rathmore and the INEC, 4,000 people have seen 'Patrick'. The cast and crew are being awarded a civic reception later this year and hopes are high that another performance will be staged – perhaps towards the end of the year. "The Ireland that Patrick O'Connor and all of the others died for in 1916 was one where everybody, including all of the Kerry Stars athletes, could feel equal and loved," said Aidan. "Patrick O'Connor died so that the Proclamation might be fulfilled, so that people like the Kerry Stars would be cherished equally as children of the nation."

INGREDIENTS Eight eggs 150g sugar 50g chocolate powder 250g dark chocolate 50g butter Some butter and sugar for the rings METHOD Melt the chocolate and the butter in a bowl over warm water. Whisk the eggs with the sugar in a bowl over hot water till they are warm; be careful not to make scrambled egg! Then whisk the eggs cold; the volume should go up to three times the size. Add the chocolate powder inside the slight warm egg. Do not whisk too much. Add the melted chocolate and gently bring it under the whisked eggs. Fill it immediately into buttered and sugared rings set on greasing paper, this needs to happen fast because the mass will go hard. Don’t fill the rings too high the mass will rise to about the double volume. Cook in pre-heated oven at 190C for about eight to twelve minutes. Depending on the size of the ring, the middle should be soft ideal when you cut that it runs out.

New library system to benefit 22,000 members in Kerry
READERS are poised to benefit as Kerry Library joins a new library national circulation system. Next Tuesday, July 12, Kerry Library will begin operating a new system for checking in and out library books which will result in significant benefits for library users. Kerry Library’s 22,000 members will be able to request books from libraries in other participating counties as well as use their library card to borrow books from libraries in several other counties around the country. The Sierra system is part of a national rollout of a project to standardise library circulation processes countrywide. It is
already in place in Dublin, Kildare and Wexford libraries and ten other local authority libraries apart from Kerry will also go ‘live’ with the new system on Tuesday next. The new system will have some very positive benefits for library users – following on from the introduction of free library membership last January – including borrowing of up to 12 items at any one time for a 21-day period; access to the library catalogues of other participating counties; and use of the Kerry Library membership card in other participating counties.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
Five parishes in Kerry now without a priest
FIVE parishes in the diocese of Kerry are now without a priest as two more parishes lost a priest this year. Announcing the clerical appointments, Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne said: “The appointments involve two more parishes without a resident priest. I realise that this in particular will cause upset and be unsettling for both priests and people. The total number of parishes without a resident priest is now five.” The Bishop of Kerry said parishes now face a challenge to have “the fullness of Church life in a time of less and less priests”. Bishop Ray Browne. “If in a pastoral area there are four parishes and just three priests, then no priest is full-time in his own parish. A quarter of each priest’s time is dedicated to the fourth parish that is without a resident priest,” said Bishop Browne. Bishop Browne said he had tried to keep the number of new appointments to a minimum this year, mindful that there were a large number last year. Father Bill Radley, parish priest, Glenflesk retires this year. Fr George Hayes, vice-rector, Irish College Rome, will now become parish priest of Glenflesk. Monsignor Sean Hanafin, PP, St John’s Tralee, will be on sabbatical until July 2017. Fr Tom Leane, parish priest, Ballyheigue, moves to Dromtarriffe as parish priest. Fr Liam Comer, PP, Dromtarriffe, has been appointed parish priest of Ardfert. Fr Tadhg Fitzgerald, PP, Ardfert, is the new parish priest of St John’s Tralee. Fr Pat Moore is to retire as PP of Duagh due to health reasons. Newly ordained deacon Rev Sean Jones goes to Listowel pastoral area on his pastoral placement. Following the transfer of Fr Tom Leane, PP, the parish of Ballyheigue will be served by the priests of the Naomh Bhréanainn Pastoral Area, with Fr Liam Comer as moderator. Following Fr Pat Moore retiring as PP of Duagh, the parish of Duagh will be served by the priests of the Listowel Pastoral Area with Fr Declan O’Connor as Moderator. Priests of all pastoral areas of the diocese will take up different responsibilities outside their own parishes in the pastoral area. Voluntary service is playing an ever-increasing role in parishes, added Bishop Browne. “The fullness of parish life in each parish is only possible because of the faith, generosity and commitment to their parish of so many individuals and families,” said Bishop Browne. He added: “Overall it is clear that more and more responsibility for life in the parish is in the hands of the laity. It is the same spirit of service to the parish that we see in all areas of local community life: the GAA, amateur drama, Kerry Parents and Friends and bridge clubs.” In the past nine months five priests of the Kerry diocese have died. “All were retired and of a good age and had given long years of great faith-filled service,” said Bishop Browne. “Last year three priests of our diocese retired having passed the age of 75. This year one priest retires on this ground. At the moment three of our priests are coping with long-term serious ill health. “Within the next year, God willing, Sean Jones will be ordained a priest for the diocese. It will be exactly ten years since our last priestly ordination. Just one priest of our diocese is under forty. Thankfully we have four other students preparing for priesthood. I ask that we all continue to pray for these students and for vocations to the priesthood in the diocese.”

Will and Rosie in the frame BY EVE KELLIHER
T
HEIR dads played key roles in ensuring the nuptials of Will Kelly and Rosie Whelan were picture-perfect. Will, the son of Sean and Mary from Killarney, and Rosie, the daughter of John and Mary from Laharn, Killorglin, were wed recently in St James’ Church, Killorglin, and held their reception in The Malton Hotel, Killarney. The father-of-the-groom Sean Kelly is a renowned wedding photographer and so was perfectly placed to capture the big day on camera. Meanwhile, the bride’s dad John, a member of Killorglin Pipe Band Association, led the bridal party into the reception with his band mates providing music on arrival to the church. Stella Randles and the Healy sisters provided further music at the ceremony and garden reception. The best man was Brian Kelly, Killarney, who returned from a training camp with the Kerry senior football team in the UK the day before the wedding. Christopher Ashe was groomsman and two of Rosie's triplet cousins from Ballyvourney, Breda and Geraldine Kelleher, were bridesmaids. The groom’s nephew Daniel Kelly, son of Bobby and Susan Kelly, Kilcummin, took on the key role of usher and his nieces Rebecca and Sarah Kelly and Emma White were flower girls. Some 270 guests joined the celebrations and Dublin band Midnight Sounds followed by local DJ Derek Hegarty ensured the dance floor was full. Banqueting manager Emer Corridan helped the bride organise a memorable reception. Celebrations continued throughout the weekend, including a barbecue in the Muckross Park Hotel the evening after the wedding. The newlyweds are currently living in Singapore where Will works for Kerry Group plc in commercial finance and Rosie works as a nurse. The couple met in UCC in 2004 and started dating in early 2007. “We returned to the scene of the crime in March 2014 and got engaged after a stay in Hayfield Manor on the weekend before we moved to Singapore,” said Will. The newlyweds enjoyed a honeymoon in the Maldives.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News +
Console revelations rock charity sector AS A nation we recoiled during the week, aghast at the financial irregularities surrounding the Console charity. It emerged that half a million euro was spent on foreign trips, designer clothes, eating out and other expenses between 2012 and 2014 – while another half a million was spent on salaries and cars. The charity’s founder and CEO Paul Kelly stepped down and a scandal has yet again rocked the charity sector after the discoveries by a HSE audit were made public in an RTÉ Investigations Unit programme for Prime Time. When Minister for Health Simon Harris said he found the report and the audit “disgusting and disturbing”, he spoke for a multitude. Fionnbar Walsh, the father of Donal, the late teenager who spoke out about suicide prevention, described his disappointment by the revelations. But while he said he was “shocked and deflated” by the revelations he defended the work carried out by Console’s staff. Before his death from cancer in 2013, Donal spoke about the importance of young people getting help for mental health issues. His family set up the #LiveLife foundation in his memory and donated about €30,000 to Console to fund teenage counselling rooms in various locations across in the country. “We’d be sad, you know, in the long-term if Console shut down tomorrow and Donal’s rooms weren’t there. We’d prefer if Console still goes on, whatever name it comes under or whatever guise it comes under,” Walsh said. Ireland has a long tradition of voluntary service and most volunteers give of their time freely and with no compensation. But the fallout of the scandals surrounding charities in recent times has meant charitable donations have declined dramatically. Not only that but the consequences will mean it is much more difficult to find volunteers, with some feeling understandably discouraged by the prospect of finding themselves at the centre of a scandal should some irregularities be discovered in the running of the organisation. As a result, the voluntary and community sector in Ireland will also be left counting the cost for many years to come.

Rainforest under threat A tropical rainforest twice the size of France is threatened with the spectre of chainsaws that could wipe out iconic and endangered animals. Both the bonobo, one of mankind’s closest relatives, and the elusive okapi still hang on to existence in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s vast rainforest. The forest represents around ten per cent of the world’s remaining rainforests and is a unique ecosystem that supplies 40 million people with food and fuel. Fears that the DRC is considering opening the 1.5 million square kilometres of forest to logging companies has sent shockwaves through the conservation community. A coalition of environment and anti-corruption organisations has called on the DRC to maintain its 14-year moratorium on granting new logging alliances. The conservation groups, led by Greenpeace Africa, warn of the dire social as well as climate change impacts mass logging could cause. Irène Wabiwa Betoko, Greenpeace Africa, said: “The large-scale logging of DRC’s rainforest was and is a disaster. It not only harms the country’s environment, but also fuels corruption and creates social and economic havoc. We call upon the DRC government to keep the present logging moratorium in place.” Britain, along with Norway, France, Germany and the EU have been assessing whether to support a billion-dollar plan proposed by the DRC Government to protect its huge forests. Reducing Emissions through Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) is an international effort under UN climate treaties to combat carbon pollution by protecting the world’s forests. DRC’s national strategy for REDD has been under negotiation for six years and will be submitted to international donor governments for approval this year. Yet it has emerged that the DRC environment minister Robert Bopolo Bogeza has recently stated measures are being undertaken to lift the moratorium on the allocation of new logging licenses, highlighting the financial benefits this could bring. Joesph Bobia, ' of Réseau Ressources Naturelles (RRN), said: “The argument that logging can significantly contribute to government revenues is completely unfounded. Around a tenth of the DRC’s rainforest is already being logged. And yet, in 2014 the country obtained a pitiful $8 million in fiscal revenues from the sector, the equivalent of about 12 cents for every Congolese person.” The moratorium on the allocation of new logging titles was issued by ministerial decree in 2002, in an attempt to regain control of the country’s timber industry, which was riddled with illegal logging and corruption.
Fire risks at halting sites in Kerry OVER 20 Traveller families living in four separate halting sites in Killarney and Tralee were found to be without a fire extinguisher or fire blanket between them, reports Aidan O’Connor in Kerry’s Eye. The discovery was made by fire inspectors just three days after 10 members of one family perished in a halting site blaze in Carrickmines in Dublin in October, according to the report. The urgent inspections of two halting sites in Killarney (bypass and Gortroe) and two halting sites in Tralee (Rathass and Dingle Road) were ordered by senior county council officials in the intermediate aftermath of the Carrickmines halting site tragedy. The reports found all of the sites had serious fire safety risks including no fire extinguisher or fire blanket in any of the mobile units and no plan for how to escape a blaze.

Views From Kerry And Around The World “I do!” Widows were found to suffer less stress after their husbands die, but the opposite was true for men who are thought to become over-reliant on their partners. The findings from the University of Padova appear to be contrary to the idea that being married has health benefits. Despite previous research showing people who are married live longer than singletons, the study of almost 2,000 over-65s has highlighted gender specific differences. Dr Caterina Trevisan, from the university, explained that for many men having a wife meant they had livein household management and someone to look after their health. In contrast, Dr Trevisan said women were “more likely to feel stressed and find their role restrictive and frustrating. Married women may suffer from the effects of caregiver burden, since they often devote themselves to caring for their husband in later life," she said. This was one of the factors behind a lower risk of depression among unmarried women, as those who had tied the knot experienced more marital problems than men and less wellness in their marriage overall. In addition, women who lost their husbands were nearly a quarter less likely to be frail in later life than men, contrary to bachelors and widowers who had an increased chance of frailty. They also discovered spinsters had a lower risk of suffering weight loss and exhaustion. Researchers found that single women were more likely to have greater job satisfaction, higher activity levels at work and a lower risk of social isolation, as they maintained relationships with friends and family better than men. Dr Trevisan continued: “Consistently with this picture, the higher educational level and better economic status seen among the single women in our study may well reflect a social condition that would promote a greater psychological and physical wellbeing. Many studies have shown that women are less vulnerable to depression than men in widowhood, probably because they have greater coping resources and are better able to express their emotions. These aspects may help to explain the lower risk of exhaustion seen in single women, who are likewise more socially integrated than single men, and consequently less exposed to frailty.” She confessed that she and colleagues had expected all unmarried people to exhibit more signs of ailing health, due to the perceived benefits of marriage, but found it only applied to men. Dr Trevisan added: “Our results partially contrast with previous reports of a weaker, but still protective effect of marriage on mortality, health status, and depression in women, as in men. However, sociological studies have suggested unmarried status is more disadvantageous for men than for women, and marriage protects the male gender more than the female one."
Console expected to be wound down IT IS understood that the suicide bereavement charity Console is to be wound down, with its services transferred to another organisation. The charity has been steeped in controversy after two weeks of revelations about questionable financial dealings and governance. A meeting was held on Thursday between Console's interim CEO David Hall, officials from the Health Service Executive and the Department of Health and the charity regulator. Mr Hall has repeatedly said that Console cannot survive unless a firm decision is made by its main founder, the HSE. It now appears the charity will be wound down but all sides want to ensure its key counselling service and phone lines are maintained. These will be transferred to another organisation in the sector. But questions remain for the HSE about why it continued to fund the organisation as the extent of financial irregularities became clear. A spokesperson said they had to wait until the internal audit was finalised.
Industrial action by psychiatric nurses in Kerry THE second phase of industrial action by 130 Kerry psychiatric nurses got underway on Thursday. The Psychiatric Nurses Association is involved in a national dispute with the HSE and Department of Health over the retention and recruitment of nurses to the mental health service. Industrial action was due to begin on Wednesday but was deferred for talks at the Workplace Relations Commission yesterday. No agreement was reached so industrial action began nationwide from 8am yesterday.

Minister for Social Protection commits to supporting post office network THE Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar this week committed “that his Department will no longer take any measures which seek to actively influence customer choice in the manner of payment away from cast payments at the post office”. This was in response to a priority question from me when I asked the Minister if he would strictly direct the people in his Department to stop sending out letters to Social Welfare recipients, asking them to give details of a bank account so they can be paid directly into the bank and not through the Post Office network. This is following on from jobseeker customers receiving letters recently offering the option of payment into a bank account and past letters issued to Social Welfare recipients receiving letters from the Department encouraging them to be paid into a bank account. I am very happy with the Minister’s
response and his proactive approach, I am very glad that in the new programme for Government clearly states its commitment to actively encouraging payments at post office. this is most welcome. Michael Healy-Rae, TD Kilgarvan

007’S NEW CAR
CHREXIT
Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing reveal hypercar
Chris Evans Quits Top Gear
THIS week Chris Evans quits Top Gear after just one season. The show's viewing figures dropped a further 400,000 viewers highlighting the dismal failure of the new show, starting at a low 4.4 million dropping to 1.9 million over six episodes. The only rise in figures was episode five which featured Top Gear’s visit to Kerry. Since the first episode Chris Evans has been under constant fire for his “shouty” presenting style and as the season rolled on it was reported that things were not well behind the scenes with Matt LeBlanc threatening to leave the show if Chris Evans was to remain. And if things weren’t bad enough for Evans, reports of sexual assault allegations started to emerge. After episode two viewers were calling for Evans to be replaced. The BBC took note
of the viewers’ sentiment and didn’t offer any resistance to his resignation. However what emerged from this car crash of a show was the talent of Chris Harris and Rory Reid. A bit of editorial freedom for these guys could show promise in the future. On the other side, Matt LeBlanc did improve as the show went on but whether he could carry the lead is open to debate. And as for the remaining presenters, Eddie Jordan and Sabine Schmitz, have very little to offer. Schmitz is a talented racecar driver but doesn’t make the connection with the viewers and as for Jordan, he was just making up the numbers. The old Top Gear trio will be returning to TV screens this autumn with their new show, “Grand Tour”.
If they deliver anything similar to their best, surely that could be the end of Top Gear as we know it. How can the BBC fix this? The old Top Gear was sold into 214 territories, and was reported to be making more than £150m in revenue for the BBC’s commercial arm. Watched by more than five million people in the UK alone, 23m fans on Facebook, 4m subscribers to its YouTube channel and the most successful BBC spin-off magazine – that has taken one BIG hit.

YOU will be sure to see this hypercar is the next 007 offering. This car is the product of collaboration between Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing F1, headed up by F1 engineer Adrian Newey, one of the most successful F1 racecar engineers. It is a production car due in 2018. The catch? Well, it’ll set you back between £2m and £3m. This lightweight, mid-engined two-seater is powered by a high-revving naturally aspirated V12. If you’re hoping it’s as quick as it looks, Aston states a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio, and suggests that the car is “sub 1000kg”. Surprisingly, 175 AM-RB 001s will be made, with production taking place at Aston’s Gaydon plant in the UK. The production run will include between 99-150 road cars and prototypes, and 25 track-only models. We’d hazard a guess that all of them have already been accounted for. If you’re one of the lucky few, however, you’re going to have to wait until 2018 to get your hands on one...

A limb has fallen from the family tree I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me” Remember the best times, the laughter, the song The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through. My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest Remembering all, how I truly was blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls, I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin, Until the day comes we’re together again.

Rathmore Gneeveguilla Community Games
Last weekend, there was more than one Munster Final taking place. Community Games Munster Finals took place on Saturday at the University of Limerick with huge crowds in attendance. Our U14 Girls Spikeball team, represented our area and ‘Kerry’ but were drawn against a very strong Limerick side... Unfortunately it wasn’t our day and even though we kept the momentum going, Limerick were too strong and won the game, they also went on to win first place in this competition. Well done to the following panel of players, the majority of this team are still young enough to play in this competition next year, so we hope to see them back again. Michelle Fleming, Aisling Brosnan, Tara O’Leary, Katelyn O’Leary, Caoimhe Guerin-Crowley, and Emma McGillicuddy - Thank you to all their families for travelling to this event and a
big thank you to Mike McGillicuddy, their coach for preparing the team for this event. Our other event was the U16 Boys Basketball competition, which consisted of the following players: Sean Clifford, Lorcan Keane, Donal Hurley, Patrick Brosnan, David Gleeson, Paul O’Leary, Sean O’Keeffe and Charlie Collins. They were up against Limerick in what turned out to be a thrilling match. There was superb skill shown on both sides. Rathmore Gneeveguilla were leading by just a few points going into the final quarter, Limerick scored and pressed ahead of us in the last few minutes but our boys kept it going up until the final whistle. Unfortunately there can only be one winner and it wasn’t to be for our boys this year - the end score was 49 -45 in favour of Limerick who went on to win this competition. Everyone can be very proud of this team as they showed great resolve on the day and never gave up, Huge credit and thanks to our coaches Cormac Collins and Breda Clifford and a big thank you to all the families that travelled on the day to UL. All that we have left for this year’s Community Games calender is the All Ireland Finals in Athlone and we have three boys taking part and representing our area and ‘Kerry’ this year, more news on this in the coming weeks!

Michelle Fleming, Aisling Brosnan, Tara O’Leary, Katelyn O’Leary, Caoimhe Guerin-Crowley, and Emma McGillicuddy - Thank you to all their families
for travelling to this event and a big thank you to Mike McGillicuddy, their coach for preparing the team for this event.

Killarney Swimming Club
Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the Division II Irish Age Group finals at the University of Limerick last weekend. This is the ‘business end’ of the swimming season with the most talented young swimmers from all over the country taking part. Killarney was represented by Ethan O’Neill, Paul O’Leary, Niamh Coffey, Treasa O’Sullivan, Robert O’Brien and Margaret O’Brien. All our swimmers recorded Personal Best times in the Olympic-sized pool which is a marvelous achievement. Margaret O’Brien carved out a name for herself on the national stage by winning a gold medal in the 400 metres Individual Medley. Margaret also made the final in the 200 metres Individual Medley. Robert O’Brien, won silver in the 200 metres backstroke, bronze in the 100 metres backstroke and also made the finals in both the 200 metres Individual Medley and the 100 metres breaststroke – a very strong all-round performance by this young Killarney swimmer. Ethan O’Neill also had a fantastic weekend and missed out on a place in the finals of the 100 metres breaststroke by milliseconds. Barring injury, Ethan will be in contention for the medals next time out. Thanks to the coaches Cathal O’Brien and Leontia Doody who gave huge support and encouragement to all swimmers over the weekend and who, over just four short years, have brought the club to the point where we are competing, and winning, at national level. Thanks also to all parents for travelling. A great finish to our Club’s year.

KILLARNEY REGATTA 2016 The training is over, the countdown almost complete and final preparations are being attended to onshore this weekend as the club prepares for the 231st staging of the annual Killarney Regatta. The event is steeped in tradition, history and renowned tales of both victory and loss in days gone by. Indeed, the event is reputed to hold a claim to the oldest surviving regatta in the world. While the past two and a half centuries have been witness to dramatic changes, the unique spectacle of the six and four oar battles fought out on Lough Leane continues to firmly hold its special place in the story of Killarney. Poor weather over the past few weeks has made for testing training conditions, but whether seasoned veterans or beginners competing for their first time, all will now be eagerly looking forward to competing for top local honours as the historic contest gets underway once more. A call to all our supporters to come out in force and cheer on our crews. All are welcome to club HQ at the shoreline for refreshments, be sure to call by for a cuppa and catch up. A reminder to all our star bakers and chefs, all donations of food and supplies are most welcome! Finally, we wish to commend all our rowers, coxes and coaches for all their efforts over the past weeks and months. Best of luck to all, c’mon Muckross! APRES REGATTA The club will assemble for its annual post regatta Club Night in the Jarvey’s Rest on Sunday evening from 9pm. All members, supporters, family and friends are most welcome to attend. On Tuesday night 12th July, the Regatta Dance and presentation of prizes will
take place at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Tickets available to buy at the door on the night. REGATTA QUEEN Best of luck to Aoife Farrell who represents Muckross RC in this year’s Regatta Queen contest, the winner of which will be announced at Tuesday night’s Regatta Dance. EVENTS Congratulations and well done to all our rowers who have been busy in competition in recent weeks as regatta season reaches its busiest time. At the Cork Regatta held over 25-26 June, Sean Fleming and David Casey were second in the B Final of the Mens Division 2 Double Scull and the fastest J18 crew in their race, just behind the Club 2 Double from Portadown. Sean Fleming was also a strong second in his heat of the Mens Division 2 Scull, but unlucky to finish within one second of the qualifying times for the category finals. Congrats also go to Eimear Beazley and Niamh Coffey who were winners of the C Final of the Womens Division 2 Double over UL and Colaiste Iognaid. The girls also went on to both finish third in separate straight final races of the Womens Junior 15 Scull event. Fantastic racing all round by our J14-J16 Womens Double crews who all succeeded in qualifying from the Division 2 heats with older crews among the competition. Last Sunday, a number of Muckross crews also competed in the Fermoy Regatta over a sprint course, with exciting finishes and an impressive haul of gold medals to complete the day. Congratulations go to the Womens Junior 15 Quad crew of Eimear Beazley, Caoimhe O’Connor, Elisha Hanrahan and Hanna Daly who were winners of their final. A big congrats also goes to Eimear Beazley and Oran O’Donoghue who were winners of the Womens and Mens Junior 15 Scull finals respectively. Our youngest crew brought the club its fourth gold med-
al, with a win in the Womens Junior 14 Quad, congratulations to Claire Joy, Orla O’Connor, Aisling Coffey and Emer O’Dowd. Caoimhe O’Connor and Hanna Daly brought the club its fifth and final win with an impressive victory in the Womens Junior 15 Double. Well done to all on a fantastic club performance.

Firies were representing Kerry in U14 skittles competition. In the Munster semi final they played Limerick and this was a very close, nail biting competition with Firies winning and going through to final against Tipperary. Tipperary proved a very strong side winning the competition. Firies picked up the silver medals. The children really enjoyed their day out and had great fun along the way. Congratulations to team of Ciara Kearney, Cian Sheahan, Denis Cremin, Rachel Murphy, Laura O’Connor, Daniel Cremin and Patrick Kearney. The team was managed and trained by Carmel Sheahan. Presentation to members of Kerry Coastal Rowing Federation Our club wishes to thank most sincerely the hard work shown by Joanna King, Mary B and Pat Cuffe, members of the Board of Kerry Coastal Rowing Federation, as they step down from their positions after seven years of selfless dedication to their roles. Presentations were made to them in the clubhouse last week, and their reflections on their observations over the years were truly inspirational to both senior and junior members present on the night. They noted the huge growth in Coastal Rowing in Kerry and wished us the very best in our participation in the All-Ireland Champs in Donegal in August. Go raibh mile maith agaibh a chairde! Killarney Regatta Good luck to all our crews taking part in the Killarney Regatta this Sunday at O’Mahony’s Point, Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. Irish Rowing Championships This three day event will take place next weekend, from 15th to 17th July, at the National Rowing Centre, Iniscarra, Co. Cork. Our crews will be barely showered from the Killarney Regatta when they will hop in their singles, doubles and quads for this premier event which will showcase all that is great about Olympic Sliding Rowing in Ireland. Crews from colleges and clubs will battle it out over a 2k course for All – Ireland honours. Best of luck again to all involved.

Killarney South Community Games
Positive news for our under 13 mixed relay team, consisting of Jason Lee, Aaron O’Sullivan, Ellen Moloney, Holly Spellman and Aoibhinn Evans. Having finished second in the Community Games Final, they have been nominated to represent Kerry in the Finals in Athlone in August as the winners, Listowel, are unable to attend that date. This means that Killarney South will have the biggest ever representation in Athlone for the all Ireland Athletic Track Finals, with 13 Athletes qualifying to compete. This is mainly due to the excellent work being done in athletics in the area over the past number of years and we wish all the Athletes well. It is hoped to have a bag-packing weekend in due course and we expect all the parents in the area who had children competing in the various activities - swimming, athletics, indoor soccer etc - to please support this fundraiser and give of their time an hour or two in the local supermarket. Training continues each Monday night in An Ríocht Track, Castleisland, commencing at 7pm.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s
Club Captain Liam Hartnett was very pleased to see two of our Men’s Club teams make progress in their respective competitions over the course of last weekend and is very hopeful that both teams can make further progress in their competitions when next they face their respective opponents. The Junior team were in action in the “National Junior Cup” competition, the first stages of which incorporates part of the West Munster Area, and were being played at the Ring of Kerry Golf Course, on Saturday and Sunday the 2nd and 3rd of July. The Killarney team under the watchful eye of team manager Liam Healy faced Kenmare in the first round on Saturday and the result eventually went Killarney’s way, with a 3 matches to 1 win with the 5th match called in, and as is customary that match was called a half. The results were as follows: match 1, Matthew Leacy won 4/3, match 2, Finbarr O’Mahony won 6/5, match 3, Brian O’Regan lost 5/4, match 4, Niall McCarthy won 5/4, and match 5, Mark Tuite was called in from the 14th green. On Sunday morning Killarney faced Berehaven, and again Killarney won by 3 matches to 1 with the last match out on the course being called in, the results were as follows. Match 1, Matthew Leacy won 1 up, match 2, Finbarr O’Mahony was called in while on the 18th green in a very comfortable position of being 1 up and having his teeshot on the par three green with his opponent’s tee-shot in the greenside bunker, match 3, Darren Mulcahy won 3/2, match 4, Niall McCarthy lost 2/1 and match 5, Mark Tuite won 4/3. Darren
Local clubs weekly round-up | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm
Mulcahy was called in as a replacement for Brian O’Regan, and proved to be most worthy of the call up. Sunday afternoon saw Killarney pitted against our “old Friends and Foes”, Dooks Golf Club, Dooks had earlier conquered the home favourites by the odd match, winning by a margin of 3/2, but it must be said that a dark cloud was hanging over the Ring of Kerry team as one of their team had a serious accident on the evening before, and was recuperating in Cork University Hospital , Club Captain Liam wishes the young teenager involved a full, and speedy recovery. Team Manager Liam Healy sent out the same team, and in the same formation for the afternoon match, and the result was a ding-dong affair, with some of the matches keeping all of the supporters who had made the journey, guessing right up until the last few holes as to what the eventual outcome may be. Once again it went Killarney’s way with a 3 matches to 1 win and the last match out on the course being called in. Match 1, Matthew Leacy lost 4/3, match 2, Finbarr O’Mahony won 3/1, match 3, Darren Mulcahy won 2 up, match 4, Niall McCarthy was called in from the 16th green, and once again, anchor man Mark Tuite won by a margin of 4/3, Mark had young Ryan Kelliher acting as his caddie, Ryan is one of the very promising youths in the Club. It must be said that all of the team played excellent golf on what is a very testing golf course during the day, to record the splendid wins required to progress to the West Munster Area Final in which Killarney will be up against Tralee, and which will be played at Dooks at 3.30pm on Thursday the 14th of July. Saturday evening the 2nd of July, saw the first outing of the season for the Club’s Intermediate Team, when they were out against Castlegregory. The scoring formation for this competition is the overall aggregate margin of holes that produces the winning team, and as a result every putt is a vital one, in this standard fourball competition. Killarney eventually won by three holes, and the results were as follows. Dermot Roche and Luke Sweeney won by a margin of 2 holes, Donie MacSweeney and Kenneth Flynn lost by a margin of 2 holes, Philip O’Connor and Pa Fleming won by a margin of 3 holes. The next outing for Killarney in this competition is, as of yet, to be finalised. Sunday, the 3rd of July was a Club sponsored Open Day, singles stableford on Killeen, results were, 1st Jonathan Sparling, (9) 40 points, 2nd Paul Murphy (5) 39 points, 3rd Brendan O’Toole, (3) 38 points. Sunday the 10th will be the singles stableford competition on Mahony’s Point, entry will be via the Club online system. Club Captain Liam Hartnett wishes to convey his own, and the Club’s sincere condolences to the wife and family of our long-time member, Paddy “Bomber” O’Shea, to his wife Anne, and to our members Colm and Sinead, and to Paddy’s Sister-in-law, and former Lady Captain, Maura Fitzgerald, and to his son-in-law Karl McMahon, on the sad passing of one of “life’s Gentlemen”, Paddy was liked and respected by everyone, everywhere.

Hat-trick of Munster football titles for Kerry
Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Wednesday evening last. Kerry, with captain, Paul O’Donoghue leading the way, enjoyed a four points lead at the break, 0-10 to 0-6 but had to withstand a tremendous fightback by Cork in the second half before emerging winners by the tightest of margins. Not much was expected of Kerry this year given that, as All Ireland champions, they had to put together a whole new team, however, great credit to manager Stephen Wallace and his management team, and indeed the players as well for recovering from a rather fortuitous victory over Limerick in the semi-final to once again claim an All-Ireland semi-final place. That semi-final on July 23, is an away game for Kerry and will be against the winners of the British provincial final which is between Lancashire and London. Manchester is the likely venue should Lancashire win but should London emerge as winners then the tie will have to be played outside of the capital as Ruislip is undergoing major development right now.

THE last week was a good one for Kerry football sides when they claimed three Munster titles in five days. Kerry juniors set the ball rolling on Wednesday evening last when they defeated old rivals Cork and then on Sunday, the Kerry seniors and minors completed the treble with victories over Tipperary and Cork respectively.
SENIORS
Kerry senior footballers claimed their 78th Munster senior football title when overcoming the Tipperary challenge (317 to 2-10). The victory sealed a four-ina-row of titles for the Kingdom and Eamonn Fitzmaurice has retained a proud record of not having lost a Munster Championship game during his tenure as manager. Kerry were full value for their ten points’ winning margin and recovered well after conceding a goal with just 40 seconds or so on the clock. The winners were in control at the break when leading by six points and stretched that led to eleven points with Paul Geaney’s
East Kerry
O’ Sullivan Cup East Kerry Junior Championship Both round 1 games played last week in the O’Sullivan Cup East Kerry Junior Championship, proved to be close encounters with the result in the melting pot to the final whistle. In a local derby, Currow led by the minimum at the break in Farranfore against Firies, 0-5 to 0-4 Currow maintained their lead in the second half, until a quick fire goal and a point from William Courtney, gave Firies a 3 point lead. Currow tried hard to equalise but a great defensive effort by Firies held them at bay it was the home side that concluded the scoring to leave the final score Firies 1 - 11 Currow 12 points. The second game played last week, Spa travelled to Rathmore. The home side opened
second goal. However, Kerry seemed to take their foot off the pedal for a while and allowed Tipperary mount a serious challenge conceding a goal on 50 minutes but a few substitutions steadied the ship once again and the Kingdom were well in control once again in the final quarter. There was a fine crowd of 21,512 present on Sunday and that attendance certainly surpassed the expectations of a lot of people including the Munster Council. There were plenty positives for Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his management team to take from the game such as the performances given by Tadhg Morley and Brian Ó Beaglaoich (until he got injured), and the return to intercounty action of James O’Donoghue. However, a shoulder injury received by Colm Cooper makes the Dr Crokes man doubtful for the quarterfinals on the August weekend.
KERRY MINORS
in a row when defeating old rivals Cork in the opener at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. Kerry had got the perfect start with two goals by Bryan Sweeney and Sean O’Shea, both expertly set up by the magnificent David Clifford. Cork did come more into the game as the half wore on and a goal from their elusive full forward, Mark Buckley meant that there were just four points between the sides at the break. Kerry conceded a goal within a minute of the restart and another major from Buckley again, saw Cork hit the front at the three-quarter stage. However, Kerry regained their composure and a great strike by David Clifford who is not yet 17, kick started the Kerry revival that saw them run out deserving winners by 3-14 to 3-8, a scoreline that did not flatter them in the slightest.
KERRY JUNIORS
The Kerry Minor footballers retained the Tadhg Crowley Cup for the fourth year
Kerry Juniors completed a hat trick of Munster titles when defeating Cork by the minimum margin (0-14 to 0-13) at
the scoring and led at half time, with Alfie Giles netting for Spa and Tadgh Mahoney for Rathmore. Score at the break: Rathmore 1-6 Spa 1-4. Spa dominated the second half and ran out deserved winners. Rathmore played with determination but Spa defended strongly and progress to the quarter finals. Final score: Spa 1-11 Rathmore 1-9. These results mean that Firies and Spa are through to the quarter finals of the O’ Sullivan Cup and Currow and Rathmore are in the Bill Tangney Cup quarter finals. Firies are away to Glenflesk and Currow are away against Cordal, while Spa play Gneeveguilla, at home. Rathmore await the outcome of the Spa V Gneeveguilla game, and will either meet Gneeveguilla or have a bye to the semi finals. Well after all the excitement on the intercounty scene over the past week or so, the Garveys Supervalu senior football championship returns to centre stage this week end with two double bills of Round 3 games down for decision on Saturday and Sunday. All teams in Round 3 have of course tasted defeat in earlier rounds of the competition and they are thus availing of the second chance for redemption to reach the quarter-finals where Dr Crokes, Kenmare District, Mid Kerry and champions, South Kerry await in the other side of the draw. Dingle and Milltown-Castlemaine get proceedings underway in the first of the double bills in Austin Stack Park on Saturday afternoon (5pm). The second game on the bill is the meeting of Austin Stacks and West Kerry at 6.45pm. On Sunday, the action moves to Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium. St Kieran’s and Rathmore get proceedings underway at 2pm. The second game in the stadium at 3,35 is one of the most interesting of the weekend when club sides Legion and Kerins O’Rahillys go head to head. The availability of James O’Donoghue will be a huge bonus to the Killarney side this time round.

Tickets are on sale at The Golden Nugget Bar, The Castlerosse Leisure Centre, The Travel Inn, The Old Killarney Inn, Foley’s Spar Shop, The Laurels Bar and Committee members. Seniors The seniors played Dr Crokes in Lewis Road in the County league on Saturday
evening. Fossa ran out comfortable winners on a score of 3-13 to 0-10. Community Games Fossa under 12’s soccer team went to UL on Saturday for the community games Munster finals. Having beaten Limerick District after extra time to get to this stage the boys were looking forward to this day for a couple of weeks. The semi final saw us play Lissycasey from Clare. Playing with a strong wind in the first half Fossa started well but failed to convert some early chances. This changed after 13 minutes when Max Leon scored from a corner by Ryan O’Leary. Four minutes later a cross from Ryan again found Max, with the same result. On the 25th minute, after a good move, Sean Dineen found the net to make it 3-0. A minute later Lissycasey scored to make it 3-1 at half time. The second half was backs to the wall stuff for Fossa, with Cian Doyle, Peadar Kelliher and Sam Buckley outstanding. Final score 3-1 to Fossa. In the final we were up against the Waterford champs Cara and Fossa took command early on. A well-worked move, was finished off by Max after 6 minutes, Eddie Moroney scored a great goal after 11mins and after 20 minutes Sean Dineen bundled in a third. At half time Fossa led 3-0. Cara started the 2nd half strongly and scored on the 8th and the 11th minutes to make it 3-2 . At this stage Fossa needed something special and Darren Ryan provided it with a great run up the left wing before cutting inside, leaving a trail of defenders in his wake and then chipping the keeper to make it 4-2. Matthew O’Connor was doing a solid job in goal and the defence doing likewise, we needed the midfield to man up and Rocco Sheehan did just that getting tackles in everywhere and on everything (even his own teammates). Then in the last minute Ryan O’Leary broke up the right wing darted inside and was hauled down, penalty. The same man got up and slotted home the best penalty of the day - and that includes the Italy and Germany ones from later in the evening. All over, 5-2 and Fossa are Munster Champs. A fantastic captain Peadar Kelliher accepted the Shield and led the celebrations. Well done to the boys and best of luck in Athlone in August. Congratulations Congratulations to David Clifford who produced yet another Man Of The Match performance when helping the Kerry Minor team to a Munster Final victory against Cork in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. David finished with a personal tally of 1-05 and was involved in most of the Kerry scores with his clever link play and intelligent running, well done to the minor team as a whole who produced an accomplished performance and will be hard to dethrone as champions. Also congrats to Bryan Sheehan and the Kerry senior team who retained the senior title with a good win over Tipperary. Ladies Football Hard luck to Maud Kelly and Sara Sheehan who were part of the Kerry U-14 Team who lost the All-Ireland final to Kildare on Saturday. They were unlucky to meet a strong Kildare side on the day but they can be proud of their efforts and they have a bright future ahead. Fossa Notes

STEPS are being taken to protect against another flooding crisis in Fossa, Glenflesk and other areas in Killarney, according to Kerry County Council. Evacuations became commonplace as Storm Desmond battered the county in December, when the first-ever Red Alert for rainfall was issued in the county. News was welcomed that works on flood relief are to commence in the greater Killarney area in coming weeks. Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said: “The flooding crisis in Fossa caused serious problems to residents in the area last December. A pipe will be put in place to join up with other pipes and will take the water to the lake in Fossa.” Kerry County Council added that flood relief would also be carried out in Glenflesk, Whitebridge and the Ross Road in Killarney in the coming weeks. “I welcome the fact that this necessary work is going to be carried out in the coming weeks as residents have been very worried about the winter and the fear of further flooding,” said Deputy Healy-Rae.
