"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

New dad takes charge in roadside delivery drama ALTHOUGH he wasn’t expected to make an appearance for another five and a half weeks, baby Jayden Reen had other plans. His father Owen Reen from Rathmore got much more than he bargained for on Friday evening as he found himself delivering the baby ahead of schedule – on the side of the road. Owen, 20, was driving his partner Rebecca Cremin, 23, to Kerry University Hospital when he had to pull over for the special delivery of their bundle of joy. Rebecca’s waters broke outside Barraduff and just two miles beyond Killarney, on the Tralee Road, she realised she wasn’t going to make it to the hospital before the baby arrived. Although his phone battery was critically low – at only 1%

– Owen stayed calm and took instructions from ambulance personnel over the phone. “Someone was looking down on us!” said Owen. “Once I pulled over, it was over in about five minutes.” The couple were overjoyed to welcome their 4lbs 13oz little boy. Moments later the ambulance arrived to whisk mother and baby to Tralee. Jayden will remain in the Emly Ward for a few days more. “We actually took it in our stride but were in a bit of shock – Jayden wasn’t expected for another five and a half weeks but he wasn’t stopping for anyone!” Owen told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are absolutely delighted and we can’t wait to have him home in a few days’ time.”

Seven-a-side’s 40th anniversary celebrations

KILLARNEY gardaí are investigating a burglary which took place in the town in the early hours of Thursday morning. The raid took place between 2.30 and 2.45am in a house on Muckross Road. It is understood that two males were seen fleeing the property. If you have information contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222.

THERE will be a real trip down memory lane next Friday, June 29, as Killarney Athletic celebrates the 40th anniversary of the club’s hugely popular seven-a-side tournament. The fun commences from 8pm and will continue until late at McSorley’s (upstairs). The awards presentation takes place at 9pm for the premier, reserve and over-35 winners. All are welcome to the social night during which memorabilia will be on display.

Putting summer in the picture FANNING ourselves furiously in the heady, late July heat, most of us cannot believe that the summer is zooming by – just like the gleaming motorcade that hit town on Sunday. From rally cars to vintage camper vans, the eye-catching vehicles parked up and basked in the sunshine and appreciative glances at the hugely successful annual classic car show at Killarney Outlet Centre. The charity event was organised by Killarney

Valley Classic & Vintage Club which is now gearing up for its annual ploughing championships in Fossa, scheduled for Sunday, September 11. From the four-wheeled to the four-legged, a real bevy of barking beauties put their best paws forward as they padded into the limelight on Monday for Killarney’s favourite canine pageant, which brought to a start the eagerly anticipated carnival week at Birds EuroShow Funfair. The ensuing days saw youngsters show their flair for fancy dress as well as creative flower

arranging as they took part in the various annual contests that have been the hallmark of summer for generations in this town. See all the pictures and updates from these events and more in the pages ahead. Also this week, the team at Killarney Advertiser was delighted to present you with Killarney Magazine, a free glossy publication which showcases our town in eyecatching fashion.

GLOSSY NEW MAGAZINE PUTS KILLARNEY IN THE PICTURE

latest news | photos | keeping you up to the minute ....

Question

I have applied for a job in a sports club and have been told that I must be vetted by the Gardaí. What does this mean? Answer

YOU’VE probably spotted it clutched in eager hands around town and beyond over the past week and the team at Killarney Advertiser is delighted to present our readers with the town’s first premium tourist publication, Killarney Magazine. This glossy, free magazine, showcases our town in the dazzling light it deserves and in it we are excited about sharing sought-after insider knowledge and hidden gems. Leaf through the colourful pages to be wowed by or reminded of the attractions that have earned Killarney its enviable status as Ireland’s preeminent tourist destination. We hope we will also tempt you to veer off the beaten track to make your experience of our town and it surrounds your very own. A wonderful resource for the traveller and a handy reference guide for local residents, Killarney Magazine emerged from a pool of local talent and it features leading writers from what is a world-renowned literary and cultural hotbed. We would like to thank all our advertisers for supporting this exciting venture and we are already looking forward to next year’s edition. The magazine, designed by Damien Switzer, has been distributed throughout Killarney, including hotels, the tourist office and a host of visitor attractions. You can also check out its website at http://www.killarneymagazine.com “We noticed that there was no premium visitor magazine that captured the uniqueness of the our beautiful town. It is very much of Killarney featuring local writers, photographers and designers. Feedback has been amazing since we published last week,” said Aidan Quirke, business development manager of Killarney Advertiser and Killarney Magazine. “We are planning for next season’s publication already.”

Since 29 April 2016, people working with children or vulnerable adults must be vetted by the Garda Síochána National Vetting Bureau. Workers include staff, volunteers and those on student placements working for an organisation through which they have unsupervised access to children and/or vulnerable adults. Under the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012– 2016, organisations that require Garda vetting of individuals must register with the National Vetting Bureau. These include childcare services, schools, hospitals, health services and organisations providing leisure, sporting or physical activities to children and/or vulnerable people. If you are applying for a job with a registered organisation, the organisation will send you a vetting invitation form. You must complete the form and return to the organisation with proof of your identity. After validating your identity, the organisation will send you an email with a link to the vetting application form. You then apply to be vetted online using e-Vetting. If you wish, you may apply using a paper form instead. If you are aged under 18 you must submit a signed parent or guardian consent form. After reviewing your vetting application, the organisation submits it to the National Vetting Bureau. The National Vetting Bureau processes the application and sends a vetting disclosure to the organisation. A vetting disclosure may include details of convictions and pending prosecutions or a statement that there is no criminal record. The organisation will review the disclosure and will send you a copy of it. You can track the progress of your e-Vetting application online. Further information is available from the National Vetting Bureau at https:// vetting.garda.ie/ and from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Nearly 20,000 applications for medical cards in Kerry in 2015 FROM January to December of last year 19,628 applications were received by the Department of Health from people in Kerry seeking medical cards. Some 16,887 of these were granted. To date this year, 5,504 have been received and 4,731 have been awarded. The figures were released in response to a recent parliamentary question made by Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae to Minister for Health Simon Harris in which he asked how many medical cards were applied for and granted in the past 18 months in the county. Meanwhile, Deputy Healy-Rae has welcomed the announcement by Minister Harris that he has pledged to legislate to extend automatic medical cards to children who are entitled to a domiciliary care allowance. Minister Harris stated in the Dáil last night that 11,000 sick and severely disabled children will benefit from the commitment, which was part of the Programme for Government and that the children will not have to go through assessment or means test. He stated that children in receipt of domiciliary care will start to receive the Medical Cards in early 2017.

Baler revs up to make history in Black Valley SHARP intakes of breath were the order of the day as, with not an inch to spare, a gargantuan Fusion baler made its way through the Gap of Dunloe, Killarney, and into the history books on Tuesday. Mats were used on each side of the rockface to protect the machinery in what was the first time this type of vehicle was driven in the Gap of Dunloe. “It caused quite a stir for tourists,” said award-winning photographer Valerie O’Sullivan who took some eyecatching pictures of the occasion. The baler, driven by Cormac Tangney, for John O’Connor, Contractors, successfully made its way to the Black Valley to the farm of Eugene and Mary Tangney, to bale hay for winter feeding. The Tangneys are also supporting the cancer awareness campaign #wrapitpink.

Recruitment of GP staff in ongoing issue for full GP service in Rathmore RATHMORE is among a number of rural locations having difficulty in relation to GP recruitment, according to Kerry Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae recently requested an update from Minister for Health Simon Harris on providing a full GP service in Rathmore. He was told that the HSE management in Kerry has been in ongoing contact with the GP with regard to this matter and is “satisfied that all efforts have been exhaustive to recruit a GP or locum GP to assist the GP who is currently in Rathmore one day a week”. “These included advertising the post, contacting GPs abroad and some GPs declined an interview as they felt that the post was too rural,” said Deputy Healy-Rae. The situation in Rathmore is not uncommon in so far as a number of locations across the country are encountering difficulties in relation to GP recruitment, particularly in rural areas with single-handed practices, according to the Independent TD. Rathmore Social Action Group has been granted planning for change of use for a doctor’s surgery. “This was one of the barriers that was in the way of a full time GP service,” said local Fianna Fail councillor Niall Kelleher. “The action committee which was set up a number of months ago has requested a meeting with the GP that was awarded the GMS contract and would hope to get the full details at that meeting.” The head of primary care in Cork and Kerry along with the primary care transformation development officer for the Kerry area are due to meet again with the GP next week to discuss the interim arrangement regarding the premises and to review what additional measures can be taken to support the GP in securing an assistant or locus GP. “While I appreciate the efforts being made by the HSE something needs to be done to ensure that the people in Rathmore get a full GP service sooner rather than later,” said Deputy Healy-Rae.

Island status for Kerry? DISMAY has greeted news that the long-awaited work on the Ballyvourney to Macroom scheme, including a bypass at Macroom, would not begin until 2020. On Wednesday, Transport Minister Shane Ross responded to questions on the matter by Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin. Deputy Griffin said the project needs prioritisation and clarity was needed, as various start dates had been mooted. Minister Ross said the Ballyvourney to Macroom scheme involves the construction of 22km of new carriageway, including a bypass at Macroom town with work currently due to start in four years’ time. Last year Kerry County Council pledged to seek “island status” for the county due to the situation. There were calls at the meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday for the intervention of Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin in the issue, in the absence of a minister in this county. In addition, a joint approach from politicians in Cork and Kerry has been urged to progress a bypass route on the main road linking the counties.

Meanwhile, in a letter to Kerry County Council chief executive Moira Murrell, Transport Infrastructure Ireland regional manager Paul Moran said the N22 road scheme was still included in the Capital Investment Plan and that construction was anticipated to commence in 2020. Killarney’s cathaoirleach, Councillor Brendan Cronin, said he was disappointed that work may not begin construction until 2021/22. “This is a major access route into Kerry and the Southwest and the current daily traffic jams and backlog trying to get through Macroom are very frustrating for road users and motorists,” said Cllr Cronin. “As we in Killarney are a major tourist destination depending on being accessible it is totally unacceptable that we have this constant traffic bottleneck in Macroom. “I am calling on all Kerry Oireachtas members to put pressure on the TII and the Minister for Transport to provide the funding to deliver this bypass to free up access into our county as a matter of urgency.”

There have been calls for a Macroom bypass for decades.

‘We deserve equality of consideration in the matter of access’ IN NOVEMBER 2014 Councillor Michael Gleeson floated the idea of Kerry County Council seeking island status because of a lack of investment in the county. In May of last year, Kerry County Council said it would press ahead with attempts to be classified as an island to highlight the county'sshoddy roads. AT the time, former All-Ireland footballer Cllr Michael Gleeson said: “When I called for island status for Kerry, people thought I was being facetious, I was not. “When I proposed going

to Europe to seek special status for this county I was not exaggerating.” He slammed the government and the National Roads Authority, saying that the main access points to the county had now become obstacle points. Councillor Michael Gleeson Reacting to news on the Macroom bypass this week daily basis for work or edhe said he was very dis- ucation,” said Cllr Gleeson. appointed. “This is very “Successive governments bad news for tourism and and national politicians industry in the Kerry. It is have failed the county in also bad news for the peothis matter. We deserve ple on the Kerry-Cork bus equality of consideration that attend CUH for vital with other parts of the treatments and also for country in the matter of people who commute on a access to the county.”

Claims that Kerry snail was holding up bypass IN THE past fortnight, the controversial Kerry snail was accused of causing 45-minute traffic delays and denying the county jobs and investment. Questions were also raised in the Dáil on July 7 over the identification of the Kerry snail, with Independent Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae asking if he dons the county jersey. Deputy Healy-Rae said the Macroom to Ballyvourney bypass, which has been sought for more

14

Killarney Advertiser 22.07.16

than 30 years and would serve those travelling between Cork and Kerry, had been delayed because of the snail. Deputy Healy-Rae said: “It has been held up by environmentalists and others who thought up ridiculous reasons, such as snails and other species, and to rub salt into our wounds, they described them as the Kerry snail,” he said. “I wonder had they put a Kerry jersey on him or

how did they decide he was a Kerry snail.” He highlighted the road’s “treacherous bends” and how people can be delayed for around 45 minutes going through Macroom. This project is of paramount importance to Kerry, and to all who travel to Cork and back every day for work and the many hundreds of people from Kerry who have to travel to Cork for medical appointments, he added.

EDITOR’S VIEW

Work on Macroom Bypass is well overdue NEWS that work on the Macroom Bypass is scheduled to start in four years’ time was announced this week. But a whole chorus of us will join in asking, why has it taken so long? This is a saga that has been rumbling on for well over a quarter of a century. Most of us know people who need to travel very regularly to Cork for both work and medical appointments. But a potentially straightforward journey is made as awkward as possible, which means that many who would like to live in Kerry and commute across the border for work are forced to move out of the county. Kerry as a county and its inhabitants run the risk of becoming isolated (in effect, turned into an island) in terms of infrastructure, transport links and employment. The delays in boosting access to Kerry are costing the county dearly. Speaking to Donal Hickey in the Irish Examiner last summer, then-Killarney municipal authority chairman John Joe Culloty said access to the county was a key issue. “We see the Macroom bypass as the immediate priority, as work on its planning, design and land acquisition is much more further advanced than the Adare bypass and we would be hopeful of some progress this year,” he said. It is also a firm belief among tourism interests that if the journey time to Kerry was shortened, the county would get more visitors.

SEVEN-A-SIDE COMPETITION

RESULTS UNDERAGE TOURNAMENT Under-10 and 12 tournament In the under-10s final we had Dab United v Kerryonians which went all the way to penalties. It was nil all after extra time and then on to penalties where the Kerryonians took the spoils on a 3 to 1 score line. The goalie for the Kerryonians Callum Cronin received man of the match award. In the under-12s final we had JR Spares v Flesk Flyers in what can be only be described as a thriller. Marathon man Tom to get on his marks in Italy TRALEE man Tom Foley is getting on his marks to take on the ultimate fitness challenge in August by completing 20 marathons in 10 days. Tom, who works in Tralee Town Centre Apartments, which are owned and managed by Lee Strand, will travel to Lake Orta in Gozzano in Italy, to embark on the challenge on Saturday, August 6. In temperatures of over 30 degrees, the 37-year-old will run over the ten days a total of 526 miles, with two marathons a day. “The first marathon will take place at 8am and the second marathon will commence at 2pm each day,” said Tom. This event is a world’s first official 20 marathons in 10 days, with some of Italy’s top marathon athletes also taking part. Tom, who is a member of Tralee’s Born to Run Club, said: “I am really looking forward to the challenge, but I reckon that it will be more of a mental challenge than a physical one! I would like to thank my sponsors Lee Strand Protein+ Milk who are supporting me with my travel, accommodation and entry fees for the 20 marathons. All proceeds raised from the challenge will be donated to the homeless charity Jacket Off Your Back.” No stranger to fitness challenges, Tom has completed 27 marathons in the last three years. In 2014 he cycled over 2400km from St John's Church in Tralee to the Vatican in Rome as part of the ‘Home To Rome Cycle Challenge’ in aid of the Donal Walsh #Livelife Foundation. The challenge was filmed and a documentary was broadcast on Irish TV called ‘Donal’s Message From Home To Rome’. In 2015 Tom took part in the Energia 24-hour Irish Championships in Belfast. It’s time to tee up for footgolf tournament THIS Sunday, July 24, will see the dedicated members of MEK United FC blending two of the world’s most popular games, golf and football, as the progressive club hosts its first-ever footgolf tournament at the old Dunloe Golf Course. Instead of swinging golf clubs and hitting golf balls, participants kick a standard size football from tee to pin. “Footgolf is fun for all ages and abilities and we are asking everyone in the club and beyond to support this fundraiser for our club,” said Liam Murphy of MEK United. “A fun, action-packed day is guaranteed for all the family!” Anyone interested in booking a tee should contact club chairman Pa Murphy on 087-7943220. “We are also offering sponsorship opportunities where local businesses can sponsor a tee box for only €50,” said Liam. “By sponsoring a tee box, businesses are supporting the club as well as getting their logo displayed at the tee box on the day.” To sponsor a tee, contact Liam Murphy on 0874145662.

Kerry feels ‘The Force’ at Star Wars celebration in London SKELLIG MICHAEL’S appearance in the most recent instalment of Star Wars presented Tourism Ireland with a truly unique opportunity to highlight the South West to fans of the science fiction franchise around the world. And the good news for Irish tourism is that this didn’t signal the end of the Star Wars journey in Ireland. Location scouts were so taken with the Wild Atlantic Way that locations from Kerry, Cork, Clare and Donegal were also selected to appear in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII. To continue to maximise the Star Wars connection with Ireland, Tourism Ireland – to-

gether with three Kerry tourism operators – attended Star Wars Celebration 2016 in London. Described as the “ultimate fan experience”, it runs over three days each year, attracting tens of thousands of dedicated Star Wars fans from around the world and providing a superb opportunity for Tourism Ireland to promote Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way. All the fun of the fair at Birds EuroShow Carnival Week

P ws for thought at dog show

WELL, Killarney’s glamorous canine population was well and truly put through its paces on Monday as the always exciting dog show got Birds EuroShow Carnival Week off to a wonderful start. From miniature pooches to mighty hounds, all enjoyed their moment in the sun – literally, considering the soaring temperatures at Fairhill even into the evening – and they and their owners more than deserved the limelight at the pageant for our fourlegged friends. Also unfolding throughout the week were the ever-popular fancy dress, doll show and wildflower show.

Moments in Time

PICTURE SUPPLIED BY MOMENTS IN TIME An anti-conscription rally in College Square in 1918.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Kerry hoteliers concerned About Brexit HOTEL and guesthouse owners in Kerry are concerned about the impact that Brexit will have on their business over the next 12 months, according to the latest quarterly barometer from the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF). The UK is Ireland’s largest source of inbound tourists, accounting for over 40% of overseas visitors into the country. While concerns about the impact of Brexit loom, results show the tourism industry has performed strongly so far in 2016. Some nine of ten hoteliers (90%) report that business levels are up compared to the same period last year.

Terence Mulcahy, chair of the Kerry Branch

Tourism now supports 12,000 jobs in Kerry and contributes some €380m to the local economy annually. However, the continued recovery in the sector cannot be taken for granted and the local tourism industry remains

vulnerable to external economic shocks beyond its control, such as the UK decision to leave the EU. The concerns expressed by Kerry hoteliers following the UK’s referendum result reflect the significant risks posed to the sector, with many hotels and guesthouses still in recovery mode. This comes at a time when the increasing cost of doing business in Ireland already poses a serious challenge for tourism businesses. Frances Kelleher, Killarney

Rail cutbacks a ‘thundering disgrace’ IT IS an absolute and total thundering disgrace despite the fact that Killarney town is the tourism capital of the western world that our train station office is more often closed than open. We have excellent, great, kind and helpful staff working in the train station but cutbacks have been showing and instead of four people being involved in the service at the office it is now down to one overworked person on reduced hours to man the office. The great town of Killarney is more than worthy of having a fully operational office to deal with customers and inquiries of those coming into our great town. I have raised the matter in the Dáil this week as I promised to many constituents to highlight this extreme problem and I am insisting that more resources be provided to ensure that our town will be able to provide the proper service that people would expect of us when they come into visit the Kingdom of Kerry. Magical day as Don and Pascal tie the knot

ONSIDERING his status as a world-renowned fashion designer it is no surprise that Don O’Neill, together with his fiancé Pascal Guillermie, designed their wedding outfits. The couple wore chic bluegrey suits with embroidery of seahorses and Celtic motifs when they exchanged vows in front of Ballyheigue Castle, in Don’s native Kerry. Don and Pascal, a florist, were congratulated by their family and wide circle of friends, including famous faces from the worlds of entertainment, art and fashion. Known as “the Don of Irish fashion”, the New York-based designer began is creative director of celebrities’ favourite label Theia. Pascal Guillermie, from Paris, runs Fleur de Pascal in New York. The reception was held at Ballyheigue golf club in a marquee overlooking the sea. The 200 guests included RTÉ presenter Mary Kennedy, close

friend, stylist and event organiser Orla Diffily, Kerry hoteliers Marie and Pat Chawke, bestselling author Lorna Byrne, Grainne and Sile Seoige, and singer and senator Frances Black and her daughter Aoife Scott (both of whom sang during the celebration). Another mother-and-daughter duo at the wedding were artist Pauline Bewick and Poppy Melia. Miami-based photographer Sonya Revell captured the big day on camera. “Love was the big story on the magical day as we celebrated 23 years of loving each other and that was multiplied a thousand-fold by the love that friends and family poured out upon us all weekend!” said Don. The newlyweds will reside in Brooklyn. •If you would like your big day featured in Killarney Advertiser Wedding of the Week contact Eve Kelliher on 064-6632215 or newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

Universal Contour Body Wrap Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio highlights the benefits of this inch-loss treatment

THE Universal Contour Wrap ® is the only scientifically tested and proven instant inch-loss body wrap. At Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio, the Universal Contour Wrap chosen by us as it uses only the most organic, non-toxic and natural ingredients. During the process, the natural clay and other trace minerals are extracted from the earth. Bentonite clay is known for its ability draw toxins from deep within the body. For many years, it has been used in combination with colonic hydrotherapy. Bentonite clay is highly effective for its ability to reduce bloating, water retention and to reduce unsightly cellulite and stretch marks. How it works Once the bandages that have soaked in the sea clay solution are applied to the body, the effect is that of a

giant poultice. The treatment works by drawing out toxins from the fluid around the fat cells, whilst the bandaging technique works to compress and compact the soft fatty tissue, creating a smoother base over which the soft tissue lies. Not only can you expect excellent lasting inch loss, but also a superb treatment that cleanses, detoxifies and tightens the skin. It is important to note that our process is not dehydrative one; you will not put back on the 'lost inches' through drinking a glass of water. In fact, we can assure you of the reverse, we actually encourage you to drink plenty of water after the treatment to cleanse and flush your system trough, and this can help to achieve further inch loss and tightening of the skin over the following few days. Please call us on 064-6632966 for more information.

THE BIG DAY IS HERE ALL the training, dedication and hard work will pay off tomorrow as over 2,000 runners and walkers from all over the county will line up for The Gleneagle Run Killarney which promises to be the world’s most beautiful road race. Ann Elizabeth Rohan on how skincare analysis is the cornerstone of every professional facial

SKINCARE analysis helps your therapist to tailor your skincare to your individual skincare needs. Within a few minutes, I can tell what skin type you are and what concerns you may have, arriving at what course of treatments you should take. What are your main skincare goals? How much time do you spend on your skincare routine? What’s your main concern…aging, dehydration, breakouts? I use a Woods lamp, which uses UV light to determine the skin’s condition and allows me to get a true read of your skin. You’ll be amazed what a trained eye can see, when it comes to skin consultations. I highly recommend consulting with your skincare professional, every six months, as lifestyle changes – such as hormones and stress – can take their toll on your skin, as well as air conditioning and diet.

KILLARNEY men and women will be booking their tickets for a whistle-stop tour back in time next Friday, July 29. On that date, members of the Franciscan Friary Folk Group and youth club will be rolling back the years as they reunite in The Dromhall Hotel. The fun starts at 8.30pm. Carmel Lanigan, a past member, said that she has many happy memories of being involved in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service-run group. “It was a great place to meet when we were growing up, with a lot of activities and visits to other youth clubs,” she said. Dromhall Hotel nominated for wedding award THE four-star Dromhall Hotel has been nominated in the Mrs2be Bride’s Choice Awards for 2016 for the third year running, following on from being a finalist in the 2015 Best Wedding Venue – Hotel Category. Mrs2Be Bride’s Choice Awards recognise excellent quality of service, professionalism and flexibility of wedding suppliers and venues. “The Dromhall Hotel was nominated by a couple who held their wedding reception at the venue in 2015, which distinguishes Mrs2Be Brides’ Choice Award nominations from others as they are not based on public voting, but are based on reviews from real couples who hosted their wedding receptions at the hotel in 2015,” said Ciara O’Callaghan, wedding and events co-ordinator at The Dromhall. Bernadette Randles, managing director of The Dromhall, said: “It is lovely to be nominated by a bride and groom who held their special day with us, as it shows that they are happy with the level of service received. It also recognises our team of hardworking staff, who always aim to ensure top levels of service are provided and work tirelessly to ensure a couple’s dream day becomes reality.”

Vodafone graduates take a bow in Killarney SMARTPHONE classes got the thumbs-up in Killarney this week as a number of graduates from the Vodafone Killarney course received their certificates. In recent times we have seen Internet usage on smartphones double year on year putting Ireland now in the top position for smartphone Internet connectivity across all western nations, according to Jessica O’Connor of Vodafone Killarney. “More than 70% of us now own smartphones and are choosing to use them more than any other device and this is only going to increase.” However there is a substantial group of people (particularly among older customers who are struggling to use and adapt to smartphones, added Jessica.

To support these people with this digital change, Vodafone Killarney is now running a four-week weekly smartphone Class free of charge and run by Vodafone employees for support and education purposes. “To date these classes have been a great success and will be commencing again at the end of August,” said Jessica. “The classes are suitable for anyone who wishes to learn more on what they their smartphone offers and to connect them to a whole new world in an informal classroom environment.” If you are interested in attending the next four-week course at the end of August call into your local Vodafone store or contact the team on 064-6635050 for more information.

The super-talented singer-songwriter will be launching his EP Untold Stories with a gig in the INEC Acoustic Club on Friday, July 29, a year after his sold-out concert in the same venue. The eagerly anticipated recording was produced by Brendan O’Connor, in Little Dylan Studios. Acclaimed Kerry and Killarney band Truly Diverse also perform on the new

CD. “Truly Diverse will also be my band on July 29,” added Tom. Truly Diverse consists of Kieran Healy, Anthony O’Connor, Andrew Doyle, Brendan O’Connor and Patrick O’Connor. “Also Tracey Kerins and Aoibhe O’Connor will be providing backing vocals on the night,” said Tom. “Aine Carroll from Cork, who appeared on The Voice UK last year, will be the support act.” Tickets are available at the door. Doors open at 8pm and the show is at 9pm. The EP will be available for pre-order on iTunes, from Monday, July 25, and will be released on Friday,

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 11:1-13: In the prayer Jesus gave us as a model, the focus is not on getting God to do what we want, but on trying to be open to what God wants: “Your kingdom come.” That openness implies a trust that what God wants for us is our good. When have you found that it was good for you to take life as it comes, trusting that the Spirit was with you no matter what happened? One of the points in the parable of the friend knocking at the door, is that in the case of true friendship it will not be necessary to browbeat the friend into giving what you seek. Recall times when you had a friend who gave willingly and readily. What was it like to have such a generous and willing response? Perhaps you can also recall when you have been that kind of a friend to others. In the culture of the Middle East, hospitality is a priority. It would be unimaginable not to help a friend. Just so, it is unimaginable that God will ignore our prayer. When you think of the reliability of God, what are the images that you find helpful and that encourage you to persist in prayer? John Byrne, OSA

MUSINGS

TO PARAPHRASE Luke 11:13: “The heavenly Father will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” Children hate it when they do not get the exact gift they put in for – ask Santa Claus. Our young ones look for one model of a mobile phone and get a slightly older (and possibly more reasonably-priced) version. Loud disappointment rebounds through the whole house: “That was not what I wanted!” The father who would hand his child a snake instead of a fish would get a similar response. Giving a stone instead of bread would not go down well either. The only time when the wrong gift is acceptable is when it is a better gift, bigger, more generous, more useful, more luxuriant. Which brings us to the key message of the Gospel: you may ask for whatever you wish from God, what you get in return will blow your mind, even though it is not exactly what you asked for. Heavenly Father, help me. Whatever I seek, send your Holy Spirit to fill my heart. Let your Spirit satisfy me. Fr Bernard Cotter

THE OPEN DOOR

HOW do you pray? Is there a right or a wrong way of doing it? Should we pray lying in bed or kneeling at the altar, alone or in company, in the church or out in nature, in stillness and silence or with tambourines and songs of praise? The first disciples weren’t quite sure how to go about things, and today we see them approach Jesus to ask him: “Lord, teach us to pray.” In response, he gave them the words of what we now know as the ‘Our Father’. But he had some more advice for the disciples too – keep praying! If you were to call on a friend for help in the middle of the night, Jesus says, your persistence alone would convince him to help. If a child asks for food, his parents will naturally grant him what he asks for. The message is clear – we just have to keep asking. Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to spend time alone in prayer, and we know from the Passion accounts that he cried out to God in moments of anguish and desperation. There are many different ways to pray. It matters less where and how we choose to pray, than the fact that we choose to pray at all. If we keep asking, if we keep the lines of communication open, God will grant us what is good. Tríona Doherty

Food for thought this new school year BETWEEN buying new school essentials and organising packed timetables, most parents will want to have quick, easy, healthy lunchbox solutions to hand. Lunches provide around one third of our daily nutritional needs, so it’s important to put some thought and planning into food, and learning about good food habits along the way. Safefood has a wealth of tips for a healthy, tasty school lunchbox. To help your child get the most from their lunchbox, try to include the following each day, remembering to gradually introduce any changes over time. One to two portions starchy food like potatoes, rice, pasta, wholegrain or brown bread will keep your child going through the school day. One or more portions of fruit and vegetables, like apples, oranges, bananas, berries or salad in a sandwich/wrap or vegetable

Theme your lunchbox on a different country, e.g. Italian - try a pasta salad, Mexican - soft tortillas with filling. Straws and brightly coloured drinks bottles can make milk and water more interesting. The following weekly lunchbox planner shows you the potential variety you can have: Monday: Chicken salad sandwich on brown bread, a small bag of popcorn, a piece of fruit, a small bottle of water and a yoghurt. (Some children might not like salads to begin with so maybe just start them off with some lettuce leaves in a sandwich) Tuesday: Tuna salad wrap, carrot sticks, a cheese portion and a glass of milk

48

Killarney Advertiser 22.07.16

Wednesday: Slice of ham and pineapple pizza, fruit of choice (chopped for smaller children), a yoghurt drink and a slice of fruit bread Thursday: Cheese and crackers, veggie sticks, a banana or dried fruit like a small box of raisins and a bottle of water Friday: Pasta salad made with last night’s pasta leftovers and chunks of cheese and vegetables. Follow up with some grapes, a yoghurt and a glass of water

sticks, are also key to a healthy lunch. Include one portion of dairy foods like milk, cheese or yoghurt. Small amounts of high-protein foods like deli meats, fish, like tuna or salmon, or vegetarian options like hummus or egg are also excellent additions to any lunchbox. To drink, give your child a small bottle of water or milk instead of juice drinks or fizzy drinks. It’s okay to have treat foods like crisps, chocolate, cake, biscuits or sweets every now and again for lunch, just not every day – these foods give you too much sugar or fat and many schools won’t allow them as part of a healthy lunchbox scheme. Homemade popcorn and fruit make great snack alternatives too.

Budgeting for back to school IF YOU have children starting or returning to school or college this September, you will be well aware of the costs involved. Planning for this sounds easy, but sometimes you might need a little help. Sitting down with pen and paper, or taking on board useful tips such as those found on the National Consumer Agency website can be helpful. Indeed, the latter has a specific online budget planner that could be of use, see www.nca.ie/nca/backto-school-budget Such tools help you figure out what you can afford to spend under each category and it also lets you budge for ongoing costs (for instance school trips). Always be aware that managing your budget is a year-round affair – particularly in these recessionary times.

CARRYING a schoolbag that’s too heavy can lead to back pain and damage to the spine. Reduce the risk by buying an appropriate size backpack and making sure the bag is not too heavy. A heavy bag that’s slung over one shoulder can, over the 12 years of schooling, cause chronic back problems that linger into adulthood. Risks include muscle strain, distortion of the natural ‘S’ curve of the spine and rounding of the shoulders. Parents can reduce the risk in many ways, such as buying the child an appropriately sized backpack and making sure the load isn’t too heavy. A schoolbag that weighs more than 10% of the child’s weight is a risk factor, as is holding the bag in one hand by its straps and carrying the bag over one shoulder. Incorrectly packed and fitted backpacks are also risk factors. It’s crucial therefore to buy the right kind of backpack and make sure it’s packed correctly. In addition, show your child correct lifting and carrying techniques. When buying a schoolbag, choose a backpack with a moulded frame and/or adjustable hip strap, so that the weight of the filled backpack will rest on your child’s pelvis instead of their shoulders and spine. The shoulder straps should be adjustable, and the rear of the backpack padded for comfort. To help with packing, the backpack should have a few separate compartments. Canvas backpacks are lighter than leather varieties. Consider buying a backpack with built-in wheels. Children are fashion conscious and vulnerable to peer pressure, so make sure you take your child with you when buying their backpack. The backpack should weigh less than 10% of your

child’s body weight – for example, a child of 40kg should carry less than 4kg in their backpack. Ideally, the child in this example should only carry around 2–3kg of books. Pack the heaviest items so they are closest to the child’s back. If the heaviest items are packed further away, this throws out the child’s centre of gravity and causes unnecessary back strain. Make sure that items can’t move around during transit, as this could upset your child’s centre of gravity – use the backpack’s compartments. Adjust the shoulder straps so that the bottom of the backpack is just above the child’s waist – don’t allow them to wear the backpack slung low over their buttocks. When fitted correctly, the backpack should contour snugly to the child’s back, rather than hang off their shoulders.

FIRST-EVER ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN LAUNCHED FOR KERRY

‘A roadmap for achieving economic and community development’ THE first-ever economic and community plan for County Kerry has been published this week by Kerry County Council. The Kerry Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP) 20162022 provides a strategic framework for achieving improved economic and community development in the county in the years ahead. The plan is the culmination of 12 months of consultation and engagement with local, regional and national partners. The plan – for which Kerry County Council is the lead partner – brought together a wide range of organisations and agencies working in the areas of economic and community development and has been adopted by the elected members of the council. It builds on the national and regional policy framework, particularly the Regional Action Plan for Jobs, and will provide enhanced strategic planning, better targeting and co-ordination of resources with the objective of im-

proving the quality of life for everyone living and working in Kerry. Specific targets for economic and community development are included, those responsible for delivery of these goals are identified and deliv-

ery timeframes are set out. Kerry’s mayor, Cllr Michael O’Shea, said the plan “represents a very comprehensive attempt to improve the attractiveness of our beautiful county as a place to work and live”.

“It aims to enhance what we have to offer to companies, small businesses and individuals who want to come to work and live in our county. The Plan recognises the challenges the county faces as well as the opportunities that exist for growth in our local economy and in our communities,” he added. The chief executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said the reforms in local government in recent years give local authorities new enhanced roles in economic and community development in their areas. This plan provides the county with a roadmap for achieving improved economic and community development, she added. “Working with bodies like the IDA and Enterprise Ireland to attract more employment and investment to Kerry, the County Council and other agencies will continue to strive for improvements in our employment and economic environment,” said Ms Murrell.

Self-driving Daimler bus makes history IN A world first, Daimler Buses has demonstrated an autonomous city bus along a 20-kilometre route in the Netherlands. Conducted this week over a 20-kilometre bus route negotiating numerous bends, tunnels and traffic-light-controlled junctions, while attaining its top speed of 70km/h. Daimler Buses says it’s the first manufacturer to put a city bus into automated operation in an active traffic situation. The brains behind the vehicle’s autonomous operation, the ‘CityPilot’ technology. Daimler Buses says the CityPilot is not intended to replace the driver – rather it allows the driver to take a break during autonomous operation, thereby easing some of the strain of the driving task. Touching a brake or accelerator pedal or moving the steering wheel instantly disables the CityPilot system, handing full control back to the driver. Conversely, if the bus senses that traffic conditions are suitable for autonomous operation, the driver is invited to activate the CityPilot system. The CityPilot system relies on a suite of separate technologies, including long- and short-range radar, a number of cameras and a GPS navigation system. Daimler Buses says the integration and connectivity of the cameras and sensors is pioneering, allowing the bus to gain a clear picture of its immediate surroundings. While the CityPilot takes some of the strain out of driving, autonomous operation also delivers benefits in terms of fuel economy and road safety. The Mercedes-Benz Future Bus will continue to serve as a development platform; Daimler Buses is yet to mention any provisional dates for volume production.

ŠKODA has once again been named the most dependable car brand in Britain. The result was confirmed for a second consecutive time by the JD Power market research company‘s 2016 study. Moreover, ŠKODA Yeti and ŠKODA Fabia topped the ranking in their segments. The renowned JD Power UK Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) took place for a second time in 2016. The study focused on cars registered by their owners in the UK between the years 2013 and 2015, which means the vehicles are now 12 to 36 months old. JD Power collected responses from more than 13,000 original car owners around Britain, enquiring about problems they had experienced with their vehicles over the previous 12 months. J.D. Power examined 177 problem symptoms divided into eight categories including engine and transmission; vehicle exterior; driving experience;

52

displays and controls; infotainment; seats; air conditioning and vehicle interior. Ranking of the VDS study was determined by the number of problems specified per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. With only 66 points Škoda led the ranking, surpassing the runner-up by 13 points. The Czech car manufacturer thus beats its own result from last year by 11 points. The overall average for all participating brands was 113 points. In addition, the excellent quality of the Škoda cars convinced owners in individual car segments also. Škoda Fabia received the highest award in the small car segment while Škoda Yeti dominated the compact SUV category. Škoda Octavia rounded off the overall result for the brand with second place among compact cars.

Nora gets the keys to her new Yaris THERE were celebrations at Killarney Credit Union this week as Pat Delaney, its chairman, presented the keys of a brand-new Toyota Yaris to Nora Kelliher from Fossa. Nora was the winner of the car, from Bowler’s Toyota Garage, as part of the Killarney Credit Union members’ draw.

ALMOST a hundred classic and vintage cars motored centre stage at Killarney Outlet Centre on Sunday for the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Static Car Show. Organisers got in the driving seat for the charity event in a bid to raise funds for the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus, the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Ireland and the Irish Pilgrimage Trust. The second annual event, it proved a huge success, said chairman of Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club Tom Leslie. “One of the highlights of the day was when the World Rally Car owned by Thomas Fitzmaurice of Abbeydorney went on display,” said Tom. The Subaru Impreza, along with an accompanying DVD tracing its history, proved a major hit with motoring fans, as did the M3 BMW owned by local man Kevin O’Donoghue. “Cars took part from throughout Kerry as well as from Limerick, Cork and

Kildare,” added Tom. The organisers thanked all who supported the event, including Alma’s Restaurant, Milltown, which hosted the barbecue and Ahern’s BMW Garage, Castleisland, Killarney Advertiser, and staff and management of Killarney Outlet Centre as well as all the various retailers there. “We would also like to say a huge thanks to the public for coming out to support us,” said Tom. “Now the club is going full steam ahead for the South Kerry Ploughing Championships which will take place in Fossa on Sunday, September 11.” Prizes galore were on offer on the day, including a weekend for two in the Maritime Hotel in Bantry which was won by Peter Philppin. Other prizes included a weekend break in Beechgrove Caravan Park and dinner for two in Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

Bentley creates the ultimate fisherman’s friend BENTLEY’S bespoke Mulliner division has announced it will offer what it describes as the “ultimate angling accessory” for its full-size Bentayga SUV. Created for wealthy fly-fishing enthusiasts, the option has been named the “Master Tackle Station”. This handmade option sees the luxury SUV’s large boot hijacked to offer a place to store all the fishing rods, waders, nets, flies and refreshments needed for a long day of trout and salmon fishing. Featuring a Burr walnut-veneered cabinet and the highest quality leather available featuring sliding drawers and trays plus a fly-tying vice, the option also comes equipped with the intricate tools needed to create the flies. There’s also a refreshment cabinet that comes with metal flasks and even a set of fine-china tableware. Finally, as well as a waterproof floor, there’s an on-board dehumidifier that keeps the boot area dry. Bentley says the complete cabinet and all the accessories can be removed and stored if the owner needs the boot space back. That is handy, no need to buy another one to go to the shops. Bentley hopes to sell 50 cars this year. Seriously….

James is on a par with the best for second year running

At the presentations of prizes for the 2016 Ricky Kelly Memorial Pitch & Putt Tournament in Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club on Monday night are Patrick O'Sullivan (Tatler Jack Bar, sponsor), Phillip O'Connor, Donie Kelly (representing the Kelly family), Creagh Courtney (winning team captain), James Fleming and Derry McCarthy (Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club chairman). Also included in photo are TJ O'Sullivan and Robbie Harnett.

OVER 25 teams vied for glory in the 25th-anniversary staging of the Ricky Kelly Memorial Pitch & Putt Tournament at the weekend. Sponsored by the Tatler Jack Bar, the popular event took place at Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club. The three-ball scramble format provided some great scoring over the weekend. For the second year-in-arow James Fleming was on the winning team as he joined forces on this occasion with both Creagh Courtney and Phillip O’Connor to win the event with a magnificent score of 31 under par and a score of 63 nett. That was one shot better than the team of Aidan and Kieran O’Keeffe along with Niall O’Mara who finished second on 64 nett. The overall gross prize went to the

Liebherr-sponsored team of John McGrath, David Maloney and David McIndoe Jnr with a score of 82 (26 under par). The mixed nett saw more success for the Fleming family with James’s brother Damien Fleming, Damien’s wife Sharon and brother-in-law David O’Donnell winning the prize with a score of 66 2/3. The non-members’ prize saw some high-profile entries not least three Kerry senior players as Colm Cooper did battle with inter-county colleagues Brian Kelly and Jonathan Lyne (who played together on the same team) for the prize. In the end Colm teamed up with Jamie and Shane Doolan in a Tatler Jack Bar-sponsored team to win the prize with a score of 64 1/3 nett. 22.07.16 Killarney Advertiser

Death is nothing at all I have only slipped away into the next room I am I, and you are you Whatever we were to each other that we still are Call me by my old familiar name Speak to me in the easy way you always used Put no difference into your tone Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together Play, smile, think of me Let my name be the household name it always was Let it be spoken without the shadow of a ghost in it Life means all that it ever meant It is the same as it ever was What is death but a negligible accident Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight All is well, nothing is lost One brief moment and all will be as it was before. Always thinking of you, your children/ sisters/brothers Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, Denis and their families.

When times were up we’d hold you close, Not wanting to let go, You’d smile and say I’ll see you soon and some how we would know, That while it’s very hard to wait one day the time will come, We’ll join you there forever more, When we too are called home. Our wish may go ungranted, But it will always be true, For we would trade so many tomorrows, For one yesterday with you. Carr Diamond Trophy” Competition, but it also saw the exit of two of our other teams in the latter stages of the Munster section of their respective competitions, and although both teams involved just lost by a whisker, they have represented us with pride and passion and a huge amount of talent, and we can, and must, use these experiences as a springboard for future success. Thursday the 14th saw our seniors team play in the away leg of the “J.B. Carr Diamond Trophy” when they travelled to Raffeen Creek for that leg, Killarney required only 2 points from the 5 matches to progress, and the team duly obliged when 3 of our pairings won their matches and the other 2 matches were called in, as the overall result had been determined. Brian Fitzgerald and Donie MacSweeney, won 4/2, Enda Curtayne and Dermot Roche won 3/2, John Hickey and Padraig Griffin won 4/3. The matches with Derry O’Connor and John Clifford, and with Con Healy and John Wall were called in. Killarney are now

in the Munster final in this competition for the very first time, when they will face Nenagh, again on a home and away basis, on dates to be confirmed. This is a fantastic achievement by our team. Thursday the 14th also saw our team play in the west Munster final in the “Junior Cup”, when they faced Tralee at Dooks, and after a tremendous tussle Killarney were beaten by the odd match, unfortunately going down by a margin of 3 matches to 2. Sunday the 17th saw our team play in the Munster semi-final in the “Jimmy Bruen Shield”, against Muskerry at Douglas Golf Course, the match was a ding-dong affair with Muskerry getting the earlier upper hand, then it swung Killarney’s way, but it eventually hinged on the 4th match, which was the last match out on the course, and after a heroic struggle Enda Curtayne and Michael Maher eventually succumbed to their opponents on the 21st hole. The other results were as follows, Dermot Roche and Niall McCarthy won 2/1, Darren Mulcahy and Peter McEnery lost 4/2,Luke Walsh and Robert Cussen lost 2/1, and in the last match, the Father and Son combination of Tomas and Ryan Kelliher won by a margin of 5/3. Killarney Cycling Club

The youth track nationals were held last Saturday 16th July 2016 at Sundrive Velodrome. This was the first time Killarney Cycling Club sent a team to compete at the track nationals. The day began at 10am sign on for Sarah McGrath who was competing in the girls U16, Jaden Leane competing in the

boys U14 and Almha and Tara Kissane competing in the girls U14. This was followed by an open track warm up for everyone at 11am. 11.30 saw the flying 200 for everyone as this was qualifying for the Sprint. Almha qualified here even though all did great times only 6 were put through. She rode a really good ride off but didn’t progress to medal ride off. Next was the Time Trial and despite none of them having used a start gate before they all timed it perfectly for a clean getaway and had good times here. Tara finished 5th just fractions away from a medal and Jaden coming in sixth in the U16’s. The final discipline of the day was the Scratch race all putting heart and soul into their respective races and when we all thought Tara had 3rd Almha made a typical track move making a late surge high on the track out of the others sights and stole it from her sister. Bronze For Killarney and 1st Underage track medal for Killarney cycling club. The first of many as we are planning on having a larger number of track riders next year for the event. A huge Thank you goes to Brendan Whelan of Arcane Cycling Team and Bicycle Design Centre Kildare who not only coached Both Almha and Tara but gave his day to guiding and coaching us all through the event as it was our first nationals and so totally different to the road racing. It was a super event and well organised by Sundrive Velodrome where we’re always made feel welcome. While the track nationals were being held in Dublin our mountain bike section made the Long journey up to Dundalk this weekend for the XC Nationals with Joe o Leary, Jack Murphy and Evan Murphy representing the club. Joe and Evan both put great performances finishing mid table in their respective races. Jack lead out the u16 race and had just opened a gap on the chasing bunch when the first of 3 punctures struck. In spite of a puncture in each lap incredibly he raced on to finish third. More bad luck then followed as one of his wheel changes was deemed to have taken place outside the designated technical zone and he was disqualified. It will come as no surprise to those of you who know jack that he took his disappointment in good spirits. Also in a good sporting gesture the rider who got promoted to 3rd presented his medal to Jack afterwards. Great weekend away with the lads as always. Closer to home Killorglin GP took place which was Round 9 of the National Series. Killarney had great representation here also. In the A1/2 race Leigh Hewerdine & Conor Kissane were best placed in 12th and 13th. In the A3 race Michael Murphy had a great race coming home 7th. In the A4 race Darren Burke was first over the line followed by a bunch sprint which saw Marcus Treacy come 3rd and Keith Curtin 5th. In the under 16 race which came down to a bunch sprint at the end, Killarney was represented by Fergal Murphy. The under 14 race saw Patrick Galvin come 5th and also having a great races were Stefan Caulfield Dreier, Lorcan Daly and Ethan Slattery. The Under 12 race saw Shane Galvin take second place in a tight bunch finish with Josh Hewerdine and Sinead Barrett also finishing strongly.

These are very important fundraisers for the club and we cannot thank enough all those who contributed to their success. Mile buíochas.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

We hosted our annual juvenile competition on Lough Lein last Sunday. While fish were caught by most competitor’s, the main reports were that the fish were small and plentiful. The winner on the day was Ryan Moloney. In good dry conditions on shore at Inisfallen Island all competitors were well fed after their mornings fishing on the lake and the seasoned catering crew conducted

their tasks with the usual gusto and all were appreciative of their cooking. After the competition ended and all competitors were well fed on the shores of Inisfallen, Saoirse Harrington (aged 11) headed out to continue fishing for a spell with her Granddad, renowned Kenmare Angler Gerry Bambury, aboard his boat aptly called Saoirse - shortly afterwards there was an excited phone call to the clean up gang still on the Island to let us know that she hooked a fine fish and was battling to get him on board, we were treated to the event live on the phone as Granddad shouted out his commands and Granddaughter was successful in landing her first ever fish - As one seasoned Angler remarked, when your first fish is a Trout just over 4lb in weight, how do you top that! Gerry told us that she had picked out her own lure and no doubt with her luck he will be consulting her in the future before he heads out fishing! Our annual juvenile evening fishing trip to Barfinny is now scheduled to take place on Friday night 5th August commencing at 6pm until approx 9pm.

KERRY SENIORS AND MINORS IN CROKE PARK DOUBLE BILL THE Kerry Senior and Minor football teams will be doubly engaged in All-Ireland quarter-finals in Croke Park on Sunday, July 31. Provincial winners, both Kerry and Galway, both of whom will be part of a treble bill at HQ on that day, still await their opponents in the senior quarter-finals. Kerry and Galway will be paired against the winners of the final two games in Round 4A of the qualifiers. Those games go ahead this Saturday as follows: Clare V Roscommon in Pearse Stadium, Galway at 3pm; Derry V Tipperary in Breffni Park at 5pm. Preconditions for the quarter-final draws are as follows: Neither Kerry nor Galway can meet their Provincial Final opponents; repeat games are to be avoided where possible. All of that means that Kerry’s opponents are limited to Roscommon, Derry and Clare (in the event that Tipperary and Clare both advance). It is good to see that Croke Park are able to accommodate some of the Minor quarter-final games this year and Kerry Minors will put their All-Ireland title on the line when they meet Ulster final runners-up Derry at 12 noon on Sunday week. The good news for Kerry followers wishing to take a weekend break in the capital on the bank holiday weekend is that there is a very attractive Qualifier fixture on the Saturday involving Donegal and Cork, who with Mayo and Westmeath will be fighting it out to meet provincial winners Dublin and Tyrone on August 6.

KERRY JUNIORS IN ACTION IN MANCHESTER

The Old Bedians Grounds in Manchester is the venue as Kerry Juniors put their All Ireland title on the line when they take on British champions Lancashire in the semi-final that has a 2pm throw-in time. Having won the title last year means that manager Stephen Wallace and his management team had to assemble a whole new team

Dr Crokes

County League Round 8 Division 1 Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-11 Dr Crokes 0-10 In a game in which we failed for the most part to break down a well marshalled Glenbeigh/Glencar defence we ended up with our first defeat in this years competition. All is still to play for as we face the last three games in the competition. I’m sure every effort will be made to ensure that we reach the Final of this League and retain the Trophy. The old cliché that you learn more from defeat than victory might be relevant to us as we prepare for the remainder of this competition and the other Championships we are engaged in. Under 11 League Next game will be played Sunday 24th of July at 12 noon against Firies. Under 16 County League The Under 16’s had an impressive win

Dan Horan, Sandra Breen, Deirdre Murphy and Mary McElligott from Horans Healthstores, Patrick O’Sullivan, chairman of the Kerry County Committee, Diarmuid Ó Sé, vice-chairman, with current and former footballers including Donnchadh Walsh, Aidan O’Mahony, Paul Murphy, Marc Ó Sé, Padraig O’Connor, Mark Griffin, Peter Crowley, Darragh Ó Sé, Ogie Moran and Eoin "Bomber" Liston.

this season and while understandably, they were far from a coherent outfit in their opening game against Limerick, they played well against a seasoned Cork outfit in the Munster final. Of course it must be conceded that they had a little element of good fortune in that semi-final against what was effectively a second-string Limerick side and Adrian Spillane’s winner could not have come at a better time given that Limerick had no time to respond. In the provincial decider, we saw the attacking side of the team in the first half while in the second period when their backs were to the wall at times, we saw at first hand the defensive qualities of the side. Team captain Paul O’Donoghue led by example in those two games but he is rated doubtful for Saturday’s game as is corner back Darren Brosnan, half back Patrick Clifford and Stephen O’Sullivan. John C. O’Connor of Kerins O’Rahillys,

who did not play senior championship with his club last year, has been drafted into the panel for Saturday’s game. This is a potential banana skin for Kerry but knowing the management team, they will leave no stone unturned in an effort to reach a third successive final. Referee is Niall McKenna of Monaghan. Beaten finalists from last year, Mayo and beaten semi finalists from last year, Wexford meet in the other semi final, also on Saturday.

over Firies on Wednesday evening in Lewis Road. A goal separated the sides in the end, 1-12 to 1-9. JUVENILE HURLING - Under 8’s A number of Go Games Blitzes for Under 8’s in the South Kerry region have been scheduled over the summer. These games are a great way for the juveniles to put the skills they’ve learned in the Academies into practice. SHAVE FOR AMY Amy is a 9 year old Dr Crokes Footballer who is currently battling against a serious illness. Her dad, Brendan, is a very active coach at underage and senior football in the ladies section of our club. Brendan works in the post office and in the Killarney Fire Station. A fundraiser, to assist Amy and her family with ongoing expenses associated with her treatment programme, will take place on Friday next July 22nd in Kieran O’Leary’s K-Town Bar at 8.00 p.m. This fundraiser, run by members of the Fire

Station, members of the Post Office, members of Dr Crokes and other friends will require our club to sell tickets for the night (€10), provide a number (6) of our members who will volunteer to have their head shaved, beard shaved (or maybe ladies to have their legs waxed), and provide a number of spot prizes for the night. Tickets are available from the Kerry GAA Store, the Tatler Jack, from team managers and from the Club Secretary Paul or Chairperson Denis. This is a cause that everybody needs to row in behind. Please buy a ticket (even if you have no interest in going) or sell a ticket – our club has 500 tickets to sell over the next few days – time to #GetBehindTheBus. AT THE RACES WITH DR. Firies Coiste na nÒg

U11 BOYS Firies U11 team made the journey to Gneeveguilla for the annual Dylan Crowley Memorial Tournament. Firies were drawn in a tough group that included Killarney Legion, Currow, Glenflesk and Rathmore with the top three teams qualifying for their respective finals. The first game saw Firies take on Legion. After a bright start, Firies stormed ahead but 2 goals before half time brought Legion level. At the start of the second half Legion pushed a further 4 points ahead but Firies never gave up and a goal and a point near the end saw both teams share the points. Firies were up against local rivals Currow in the next match. Playing against a strong breeze, Firies found themselves trailing by 3 at half time but a strong second half performance and good use of the wind saw Firies winning by 6 points. After a long break and a few creamy buns, Firies restarted their mission with a tough game against Glenflesk. This was a tough match in very wet and windy conditions. Aided by the strong wind Firies probably didn’t make enough use of it and the teams were level at half time. Faced with an uphill struggle our lads tried very hard but eventually fell short by 5 points. Our final group game was against a much-fancied Rathmore team who had beaten all other teams in the group. Firies had to get a result in this game to qualify out of the group. A loss would mean a play-off with Legion who watched the game eagerly. Fair play to our boys who played their best football of the tournament. They moved

the ball fast and wide against a much more physical side. There was never a doubt who was going to win this match as Firies lead by 7 at half time and eventually won by 9. What a great win when their backs were against the wall. Firies finished 3rd in their group just a point behind both Rathmore and Glenflesk qualifying for the division 3 final against Dromtarriff. Firies got onto their stride very fast and led by 1-05 to 0-03 at half time. This lead was cut to 2 points shortly after the break as the momentum swung the Cork boy’s way. Firies dug deep and lifted the bar again and despite conceding a last minute goal, Firies won by 2-09 to 2-05. Well done to all for a magnificent team performance, with a noteworthy thanks to our coaches and mentors. SATURDAY MORNING TRAINING ACADEMY U6, U8 and U10 Despite the recent abysmal conditions, our academy is still very much operational on Saturdays mornings. We are hoping that the July sun will make a welcome return. The Academy is scheduled to take place this Saturday, 23rd July at 10:30am in Pairc Eamonn. If it is a case that conditions are not favourable, every effort will be made to notify the groups. Check out our Facebook page or twitter handle. CÚL CAMPS Well done to all the boys and girls from Firies GAA who took part in the recent Cúl Camps in Pairc Eamonn, Farranfore. What a week of activity and fun while helping to make superstars of the future. CONDOLENCES On behalf of Firies GAA club and Firies Coiste na nÓg and, we would like to offer our sincere sympathies and condolences to the family of the late Denis O’Sullivan, Rathbeg, Firies. Currow Coiste Na nÓg

U16s: Currow travelled to Ballymac on Saturday last to contest the Castleisland District League plate final, where their opponents would be Ballymac. In wet conditions Ballymac lead at half time on a score line of Ballymac 1-09 to Currow’s 2-03. But in the second half Ballymac pulled away with the game in which they added further scores and went on to be comprehensive winners. Despite missing key players our players never let their heads down during the course of the match. U14s: On Friday 15th our u14 team played Kenmare in an East Kerry playoff game. In wet conditions Currow had the edge on the opposing team and went on to win on a score line of Currow 4-18 to Kenmare’s 3-15.
