Daniel set to entertain 10,000 in Killarney

COUNTRY music superstar Daniel O’Donnell took time out of his busy schedule to enjoy a cuppa and a chat with Brian Bowler, general manager of The Brehon, at the weekend. Daniel, who is currently staying at The Brehon, began his weeklong residency at the INEC on Tuesday where he will play five sold-out concerts.

Over 10,000 tickets sold out in just a few hours last December for the concerts which commenced on August 9 and 10 and continue tonight, August 12, and August 13 and 14. “We are delighted to welcome Daniel to Killarney,” said Brian. “We have all been really looking forward to his concerts, as are the thousands of visitors from all

Tourist season hitting all the right notes KILLARNEY is not only basking in soaring temperatures but also a sunny, cosmopolitan atmosphere, with every language floating through the air as one wanders through the streets. One businessman involved in the hospitality industry told me this week how he had never seen such a variety of nationalities choosing Killarney as their holiday destination, with a number of northern European countries such as Finland and Sweden as well as Germany and Switzerland represented in the ranks of our international guests this year.

Of course, up to 10,000 visitors from Ireland and beyond descended on Killarney this week thanks to honorary citizen Daniel O’Donnell who is performing at the INEC until Sunday. Meanwhile, his other half, Majella, will be taking centre stage in coming weeks as she joins local ladies and gents on the catwalk for the Models in Recovery fashion show organised by the Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice on September 1.

Gaelic Roots is centre stage to support Amy MUST-SEE Irish dance and music show Gaelic Roots is poised to host a special benefit performance for local girl Amy O’Connor on Sunday, August 21, at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. On the night the entire cast, including all the musicians, singers and dancers, as well as the light and sound production team, will throw their weight behind the cause. “Amy’s dad Brendan O’Connor helps with the show’s staging every week so we were very eager to do a benefit night for his nine-year-old daughter Amy who is currently fighting illness,” said a spokeswoman for the show. “We want to help raise funds to ease the financial burden on the family as they support Amy through her illness.” The hugely popular Gaelic Roots Show opened in April this year and is running until October, returning again next April for the 2017 season. “Everyone involved in Gaelic Roots is delighted to be able to do this for the very brave little girl and we hope that all the local community support this good cause and buy tickets to the show,” added the spokeswoman. Tickets for the benefit night are €20 and are available from the Killarney Avenue Hotel and designated local ticket sellers. The doors open at 8pm on August 21, with the show commencing at 8.30pm.

over the world currently arriving in Killarney just to see him perform.” Daniel last performed in Killarney in August 2014 when over 10,000 tickets were sold across five nights of concerts. He was also inducted into the Order of Inisfallen in recognition of his contribution to the local economy in Killarney.

Question

I have a medical card but my doctor has recently charged me for a medical certificate and for a blood test? Should I have to pay for these or should they be covered by the medical card? Answer

Doctors provide services to medical card holders under the General Medical Scheme (GMS). This means that they have a contract for these services with the Health Service Executive (HSE). The services provided include consultations with patients and necessary treatments that would normally be provided by a general practitioner (GP). GPs also provide prescriptions for drugs, medicines and appliances as required. Not all GP services are covered under the agreement. For example, if you need a medical report for a driving licence application you may be charged. You may also be charged for medical certificates for absence from work. If you need a medical report to apply for a social welfare payment, the Department of Social Protection may cover the fee. If you have a medical card or a GP visit card and you need a blood test to diagnose or monitor a condition, this should be provided free of charge. If you have been charged for a blood test by your doctor, you can complain to the HSE. The HSE deals with these complaints on a case by case basis and will arrange for a refund, where appropriate. You make a complaint by contacting your Local Health Office. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Credit Union can help families manage costs of third-level education WITH the Leaving Cert results and CAO offers coming out this month, many families will see their child or children off to college for the first time. For these families, this can be an extremely stressful time, as the cost of third-level education continues to spiral, having a huge impact on family budgets and household spending. Killarney Credit Union has stepped forward to remind its members that the credit union is here to help and have this week launched a new education loan at 6.2% APR which can help families in the South Kerry area cover these costs. Mark Murphy, CEO, Killarney Credit Union said: “The significant cost of third-level education puts phenomenal pressure on both parents and students starting or returning to 3rd level education this year. The student registration fee combined with monthly rent and bills, books and materials, food and day to day expenses are a significant financial burden to many families.” According to 2015 Irish League of Credit Unions research in the Republic of Ireland, 94% of parents were supporting their children financially through college, up from

74% in 2014. These parents were contributing an average of €453 per child per month to cover college related expenses. This week Killarney Credit Union announced the opening of its 2016 bursary award which will give a €4,000 bursary to four third level students to attend college this academic year. The bursary is open to all members of Killarney Credit Union who are attending college for the first time and is also open to students studying aboard and mature students. Application forms are available in all branches and on the website www. killarneycu.ie. The closing date is Friday, September 23, at 5pm. Proof of acceptance on course must be provided in advance of payment of bursary.

POPULAR Killarney birthday girl Molly Breen always has plenty of help when it comes to blowing out the birthday candles and especially this year, as they numbered 103! Family and friends gathered at Killarney Nursing Home yesterday (Thursday) to wish Molly well on her birthday. Molly, who formerly lived on Countess Road, is a keen bridge player, and welcomed many of her friends from the card-tables as well as members of Killarney Active Retirement Association, and relatives, including nieces, nephews and cousins. We had to ask what most people will want to know – what is Molly’s secret ingredient in her recipe for a wonderfully long life? “Molly always says the secret is hard work!” her niece Angela Dennehy told the Killarney Advertiser. Molly (nee O’Sullivan) was born in Ballyledder, Beaufort, in 1913 and was one of seven children. Sadly, Molly’s last surviving sibling, her sister Nora Dennehy, 94, passed away in 2013, days before Molly became a centenarian. However, as Molly said, Nora was “there in spirit” at her 100th birthday Mass led by family friend Fr Paddy O’Donoghue, which also celebrated Nora’s life. In her youth, Molly worked in Kennelly’s shop in Killorglin for several years. It was in Killorglin that she met her future husband,

Molly and Jerh Breen pictured at their 50th wedding anniversary celebration in 1990 with Molly's cousin Bishop Diarmuid O Súilleabháin.

Jerh Breen, also from Beaufort. The couple married in 1940 and together ran two jewellery shops in Killarney, with the first on Plunkett Street (then Henn Street) and the other on Main Street. Molly and Jerh, who retired in the early 1990s, were keen racegoers. “Molly has a passion for the races and would always dress up for these events,” said Angela. Jerh, who died in May 1993, would have been a familiar sight to many as the Killarney racecourse where he used to erect the clock for many years during the race meets.

Michael Healy-Rae to introduce Aunty Nellie INDEPENDENT KERRY TD Michael Healy-Rae will be like the fabled kid in a candy store when he performs the official launch of Aunty Nellie’s Sweetshop this month. Aunty Nellie’s opened its doors at 1 Kenmare Place earlier this year creating five new full and part-time jobs, and has proven to be a great addition to shopping in Killarney. The “Secret Party” on August 28 aims to give a little something back to the local community after a successful first few months. “This is an invitation to everyone to come along on the day and to join our celebration, it has been a busy few months for us so this is our opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us,” store manager PJ O’Sullivan said. First-ever Kerry Science Festival to take place in November BUSINESSES, communities and professionals across the county are being urged to throw their weight behind Science Week 2016. The Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) issued the rallying cry calling on all Kerry organisations, big and small, to support the new event. Science Week 2016 takes place from November 13-20 and it sees our county hosting its first-ever regional science festival. Science is all around us; from technology to food, from healthcare to entertainment, from transport to energy - science forms a part of almost everything we do. However, according to the SFI Science in Ireland Barometer, almost three-quarters of the population still feel that developments in science and technology are too specialised for them to understand.

They were both remanded by Judge James O'Connor to appear at Tralee District Court on Thursday at 11am where they were refused bail. The men were remanded in custody to appear again on August 25. Deenagh Lodge team rolls out the red carpet THE team at Deenagh Lodge Tea Rooms was on hand to welcome the Tour de Munster cyclists last Saturday. The 120 amateur cyclists embarked on this four-day event the previous Thursday and they covered 600km around Munster in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. “All cyclists pay their own way so all sponsorship money raised by the cyclists goes directly to the six Munster DSI branches,” said Debbie Dillon of Down Syndrome Ker-

Everything is coming up roses for James

THE Muckross Park Hotel and Spa is looking forward to the upcoming Rose of Tralee International Festival, particularly as the hotel’s duty manager and wedding co-ordinator James O’Connor has been selected as a Rose Escort. A native of Tralee, James has been living and working in Killarney for over four years. James is no stranger to the limelight and has performed in the Austin Stacks GAA Club’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2012. James is thoroughly enjoying the experience so far and is looking forward to the upcoming festival. The five-star Muckross Park is also James’s sponsor for this year’s festival and its team is wishing him the very best of luck over the exciting weeks ahead. The Rose of Tralee International Festival is one of Ireland’s largest and longest running festivals, celebrating 57 years in 2016. The festival brings young women from around the world to celebrate Irish culture and ultimately, crown the Rose of Tralee. The primary role of a Rose Escort is to look after his Rose and ensure her time at the Festival is a memorable and enjoyable experience. More than 200 men applied to become Rose Escorts at this year’s Rose of Tralee, with only 65 places available. Following a detailed interview process, the 65 were chosen and all Rose Escorts were put through a special Boot Camp in Kerry earlier this year. The bootcamp sets out to test their endurance and help them to cope with the demands of a very busy few weeks. James was not fazed by the experience, describing it as “so much fun” and “a great way to get to know all the Rose Escorts”. James is due to graduate with a Hotel Management Degree this October. The Rose of Tralee International Festival takes place in Tralee from August 17 to 23.

If the climbs don’t take your breath away, the scenery sure will PUT your pedal power to the test during Killarney Cycling Festival which takes place on Saturday, August 27. If the climbs don’t take your breath away the scenery certainly will! Cyclists can choose from two tantalising routes, the Wrong Way Round or the gruelling Hard Way Round. Both routes circle the spectacular Iveragh Peninsula, taking in some of the most spectacular vistas on the planet. The Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation is the official charity of the Killarney Cycling Festival. Cyclists have the option of donating directly to the charity when registering. Registration costs €55 and includes access to the food stops and the post cycle party at The Gleneagle Hotel with live entertainment and a barbecue. The Wrong Way Round is 160km long. It departs from

The Gleneagle hotel and tackles Molls Gap first before heading for the scenic South West via Sneem. From there on the route is familiar passing Waterville, Caherciveen, Glenbeigh and Killorglin. The more challenging Hard Way Round is 180km long and diverges from the Wrong Way Round by taking a right for Ballaghbeama through the heart of Kerry to Ballaghasheen Pass, then there’s a further detour around the stunning Skellig Ring before rejoining the main troop on the road to Caherciveen. Bring the cycling season to a close with either one of these truly rewarding cycles. To register visit www. killarneycyclingfestival.com for more information email info@killarneycyclingfestival.com

Snap up this chance to enjoy some iconic images KILLARNEY’S first citizen Councillor Brendan Cronin put Kerry photographers in the picture on Monday when he cut the ribbon on the prestigious Press Photographer of the Year 2016 exhibition in the local library on Rock Road. The chairman of Killarney Municipal District was extremely impressed with the collection of winning and shorltlisted images from the annual awards organised by the Press Photographers Association of Ireland. They will be on display in Killarney Library until August 25. “I want to congratulate our own Don MacMonagle who came first in the Nature and

Environment section with a beautiful image of Ballinskelligs at night,” said Cllr Cronin. “I am delighted also that the work of Valerie O Sullivan and Domnick Walsh was shortlisted. The unique talent of press photographers to capture a moment in time and the ability to relay a particular story with a photograph is something to be truly admired.” Over 2,000 images were entered into the annual awards this year, by 103 photographers from around the country. Awards were presented across nine categories: news, daily life and people, nature and the environment, politics, sports action, sports feature, portrait, art and entertainment and reportage.

Mark Condren, Irish Independent, was named ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2016’, his fourth time to receive the accolade. The awards judging panel included Dermot O’Shea, former picture editor of The Irish Times, who chaired the panel; John Giles, photographic editor of Press Association; and Sophie Batterbury, head of pictures, The Independent/The Independent on Sunday. Michael Chester, president, Press Photographers Association of Ireland, said: “I am delighted the PPAI exhibition is visiting Killarney, the exhibition’s first visit to the South West this year."

Killarney flies the purple flag high KILLARNEY is the proud bearer of a Purple Flag, which signifies that it offers a well-managed evening and night-time experience. Last weekend, the award’s assessors were in town for their first evaluation since 2014. “Two assessors joined members of the Killarney Purple Flag working group for a tour of Killarney by evening and night,” said chairman of the working group Paul O’Neill. “We wanted to showcase all that is interesting, fun and varied about Killarney.” The excursion began with a visit to Killarney House & Gardens. “This was a fascinating opening to the assessors’ tour and they were duly impressed,” added Paul. “The House & Gardens have been included in the Purple Flag area this year, so it is a major addition.” As the evening wore on, the assessors were introduced to the INEC, a variety of retail offerings and numerous nighttime venues throughout the town. “On behalf of the Purple Flag working group I want to acknowledge the tremendous effort made

Outrage over padlocked gate A GROUP of concerned Killarney people have stated they are to take legal action over a walkway they believe to be a public right of way. Killarney councillor Donal Grady said legal proceedings are to be taken against Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and other parties after they found padlocked gates along the popular walking route, between Killarney Golf & Fishing Club and the Castlerosse Hotel. While pedestrian access is available through a side gate, Cllr Grady stated is not possible for a pushchair or wheelchair to go through. He said he will seek a High Court injunction to have the public right-of-way restored and has also employed an engineer to carry out an inspection of the area. “I am awaiting for a full engineer’s report on the matter,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “A number of other local people are very anxious about the situation.” A notice on the gate states: “A golf ball is a dangerous projectile which can cause serious injury or even death. Entry to these grounds is entirely at your own risk. It adds: “Killarney Golf and Fishing Club accepts no liability for any injury or damage to property howsoever caused.”

and warm welcome that they received. “We are hopeful that the assessors will have a positive report but of course Killarney always wants to improve.”

Tina gets on her marks to celebrate half-century adventure

Tina Reed, Killarney, ultra-athlete, taking part in the Kerry Way Ultra Marathon. PICTURE: VALERIE O'SULLIVAN

APPROACHING a landmark birthday and seeking inspiration as to how to celebrate it? Well, Killarney woman Tina Reed has set the bar high! Tina is part of a team embarking in a five-day Itera expedition race, which will start at a mystery location on August 16 and finish in Killarney. “I will actually be turning 50 during the race on the 18th and I'm seeing that as a positive! There's no need to stop adventure and activity just because of age!” said Tina. The name of the race comes from “iter”, the Latin for “journey,” and the ‘a’ at the end stands for adventure. Artist and art teacher Tina is being joined on the team by her husband Pat Rodgers, Killarney, as well as Brian Harman from Cork and Damon de Boor from South Africa. “We are sponsored by two local businesses and would like to pay tribute to them; they are Kerry Outdoor Sports and Killorglin insulation specialists DC Energy Solutions,” said Tina. Tina is no stranger to extreme sports and has previously competed in such challenging events as the Beast of Ballyhoura and the Kerry Way Ultra Marathon. Team Kerry Outdoor Sports and DC Energy Solutions will be among 40 mixed teams taking part in Itera. “These teams of four are coming from Ireland, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand,” added Tina. What sets this race apart is the fact that it will start at a mystery location. “The race will cover a distance of 600km – hiking, biking and kayaking nonstop,” said Tina. “There will be minimal stopping for sleep, probably one or two hours in each 24 hours. The route is kept secret until the race begins! The start location is unknown but the finish is in Killarney.” Damon de Boor is a new addition to the team, replacing local teammate Eddie Birmingham from Killorglin who unfortunately had to pull out due to injury.

Don’t let hearing loss affect your quality of life Many people with hearing loss are reluctant to have a check-up, says Colin O’Brien, hearing aid audiologist with Hidden Hearing. Killarney.

DESPITE hearing being one of the essential five senses, many people who suffer from hearing loss are reluctant to have a check up or mention their hearing on a visit to the doctor.

The ability to communicate is one of the things that makes us human, and yet we go through life with impaired hearing and do little or nothing about it. Studies show that almost one in six people in Ireland experience hearing difficulties but many people delay seeking treatment for up to 15 years.

As part of a global hearing concern Hidden Hearing has access to some of the latest technologies which have been designed in leading edge laboratories to aid those whose hearing is impaired, for example it carries a range of Bluetooth enabled hearing devices which allow the wearer to wirelessly plug directly into a TV or stereo, thereby enhancing the quality of people’s lives. If you answer ‘yes’ to the following questions it may indicate that you need

34

Killarney Advertiser 12.08.16

to have your hearing checked:

•Do you often feel that people are mumbling or not speaking clearly? •Do you find it difficult to follow a conversation in a crowded room or restaurant? •Do you frequently ask people to speak up or repeat themselves? •Do you have difficulty hearing the telephone or the doorbell? •Do you have to turn the television or radio up loud to hear better? Regular hearing checks should be part of everyone’s healthcare plan and we would encourage people to take action on hearing loss as soon as you notice a problem because the longer you delay the worse the problem will become. To start the risotto, put a wide based pot on a medium heat, add some oil then add in the onion, some chopped sage leaves and a small amount of butter and salt. Cook at this heat for about five minutes. Add the rice and allow it to toast for five minutes. Add a ladle of warm stock. Keep cooking it at a medium temperature allowing the stock to soak into the rice. Keep stirring until it is the rice is nearly cooked. In a medium to hot pan add some oil and then add the rest of the squash. Cook for about five minutes while tossing it in the pan. Add some squash puree into the risotto along with the squash cubes and stir well. Season well with salt and black pepper.

Grace Notes Live performance versus the studio

Which is more daunting, singing in front of 500 people or singing to yourself while recording in the studio, asks Killarney music and singing teacher Grace Foley

SURPRISINGLY I would take public performance over singing alone any day! I find that singing in front of an audience of any size tends to be a very daunting prospect right up until the moment I sing the first few notes. I think my positive reaction in these situations is down to the simple fact that I feed off the energy of the people listening. I have always felt that I would be a millionaire if I could bottle that energy and sell it! I am very lucky to work with the very kind, and very patient, Tony O’Flaherty who has proba-

bly witnessed every type of studio-related meltdown known to man at this stage. Knowing this has made me feel like less of a neurotic lunatic and more like the standard neurotic musician! Hearing yourself over and over again can do funny things to a person's head. In a live performance situation there will always be a moment or a note that wasn't 100% perfect but the listener is very forgiving of any little slips made by the performer. That is the sheer beauty of performing live. Everyone is in the moment and isexperienc-

ing the true, raw sound that does not need to be 'perfect' to be enjoyed. The recorded sound is a very different animal to deal with. The sound in a studio needs to be almost flawless because our ears expect this. This means the artist analyses every line and note and, at times, can become fixated on something that they may not have even noticed during the initial recording. It is a very emotional journey but a person will learn a lot about themselves, both as a musician and a person, along the way. I know this has certainly been the case for me and I look forward to telling you all more about this journey very soon.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 12:49-53: The commitment of Jesus to his mission is shown in his desire to undergo the baptism that awaits him. Have there been times when there was something you greatly hoped for, even though you knew there would be a baptism of fire along the way? What was it like for you to undergo such a baptism of fire and then arrive at what you desired? Jesus recognised that the message he proclaimed would meet with a mixed reception. This did not hold him back from proclaiming the Reign of God. When have you seen this kind of courage in yourself, or in others? Jesus challenged those listening to him to commit themselves to discipleship, despite opposition from those close to them, even family members. When have you found that being true to yourself and to your beliefs required such courage? What was it like for you when you were able to follow that courageous road? JOHN BYRNE OSA

MUSINGS

“LET Jeremiah be put to death: he is unquestionably disheartening the people.” (Jeremiah 38:4) Telling the truth can be a dangerous business: ask the prophet Jeremiah. He “spoke truth to power”, as prophets are supposed to do, and the person in power, the king, didn’t like it one bit. Getting rid of the prophet seemed easier than heeding the warnings. Jeremiah was lucky to escape with his life. Jesus knew quite a bit about the hazards of speaking the truth too. He saw John the Baptist beheaded for annoying Herod. His enemies built up quite a file of ‘subversive’ words spoken by Jesus. His death on Calvary proved that his words had gotten through. Unlike Jeremiah, Jesus could not escape paying the ultimate price. His words from today’s Gospel wouldn’t have helped Jesus. People in power love to see people praying for peace, rather than examining the causes of war. Jesus acknowledges that conflict is part of life, even among believers. There is no magic potion to prevent discord. Lord, help me to speak the truth as you did, regardless of consequences. Fr Bernard Cotter

T MAY only be August but an All-Ireland title came to the Kingdom over the weekend, as The Dromhall Hotel, Killarney scooped the Best Wedding Venue – Hotel Category when leading Irish wedding website Mrs2Be.ie announced the winners of their Brides’ Choice Awards in an exciting virtual awards ceremony. The online event was deemed a huge success by the Irish wedding community. Mrs2Be Bride’s Choice Awards recognise excellent quality of service, professionalism and flexibility of wedding suppliers and venues. This year is the third year of the Mrs2Be Brides’ Choice Awards and the third year that the Dromhall Hotel were nominated. Judged by both real brides and grooms and independent judges with industry knowledge, the awards recognise excellence within the wedding industry. The Dromhall Hotel was nominated by a couple who held their Wedding Reception at the venue, which distinguishes Mrs2Be Brides’ Choice Award nominations from others as they are not based on public voting, but are based on reviews from real couples who hosted their wedding receptions at the hotel in 2015. Bernadette Randles, managing director of the Dromhall Hotel, said: “It is lovely to be nominated by a bride and Groom who held their special day with us, as it shows that they are happy with the level of service received. It also recognises our team of hardworking staff, who always aim to ensure top levels of service are provided and work tirelessly to ensure a couple’s dream day becomes reality.” The four-star Dromhall Hotel is run by the Randles family, thus you are sure of not only gracious surroundings and superb service but also that personal touch which comes from family involvement. With over 50 years of experience the Randles family know exactly how to make this most special occasion perfect. They can offer you a selection of options for your big day ranging from tailor-made occasions to reflect your individual wishes to all-inclusive packages which take all the worry out of your planning. Plans are afoot to add some lavish updates to their newly renovated banqueting suite and the bridal suite is also set for a makeover in 2016. Saying ‘I do’ at The Gleneagle Hotel

I

DO are the two most important words you will probably ever say, so why not make a song and dance about it. They have been doing just that for Gleneagle couples for decades. From the stylish 1950s, when the traditional wedding breakfast ended in the early afternoon, right up to today’s celebrations which last for days. While traditions and trends may change, food will always play an integral role in the celebrations and this is where The Gleneagle team’s expertise and experience really shines through. Head chef John Drummond and his team recently launched a series of new wedding dishes which sound simply delicious, and are a far cry from the simple wedding breakfasts of the distant past. John has spent over two decades at The Gleneagle, his love for his work and attention to detail are most evident

when devising new dishes. He has tried, tested and tasted each and every dish and invites couples planning their wedding at The Gleneagle to evening of food tasting where he will share with his passion for food and help design the perfect wedding menu. Aside from wonderful food, The Gleneagle also provides a private bar for your arrival reception, a standalone kitchen and serving team dedicated to your wedding reception, a late bar and a choice of function rooms including the recently refurbished Mangerton Suite. The Gleneagle is also licensed for civil and humanist ceremonies or should you choose a spiritual marriage then they can host that too. They have a number of rooms of varying size and so certainly have the perfect place for you to say I do. The Provocateur When the cheers turn to jeers BOOING at the Olympic Games? Surely an unheard-of phenomenon. But that’s what happened at one of the marquee events of the Rio Olympics – the men's 4x100m freestyle relay. Excitement crackled in the air as the ebullient crowd waited to see history in the making. As the relay teams walked out they were greeted rapturously. Except for the Russians, whose appearance turned the cheers to jeers. In theory, the Olympic Games symbolise a world united in sport. Ideally, it is about these elite athletes gathering to participate. So the booing on Sunday definitely marks a departure, if the permission to allow the Russian team compete had not already. In effect, the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow the team to compete had the result of allowing the roaring masses to dispense this rough justice. The details of an elaborate statesponsored doping programme made evident in the recently released McLaren report made many question whether Russia should be allowed to field a team at all. In June, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) banned the Russian track and field team, refusing to lift the team's international suspension from last fall so that the athletes might compete in Rio. Last month, the IOC upheld that decision, but would not support a full ban of the delegation. Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? A Weekly Round-Up Of News +

A new development

A

new treatment for asthma could be a “game-changer” treatment against the condition, according to a new study. The medicine, Fevipiprant, is the first new asthma pill to be developed in 20 years – users still mostly use inhalers or steroids to relieve their symptoms. But taking Fevipiprant twice daily was shown to “significantly decrease” asthma symptoms and improve lung function, reduce inflammation of the lungs and repair the lining of patient’s airwaves, according to scientists from the University of Leicester. In addition to lacking the harmful effects of steroids, Fevipiprant could slash the numbers of asthma attacks suffered by patients and greatly improve the quality of life of around 250,000 people who suffer from severe forms of the condition. “I knew straight away that I had been given the drug,” said one person, who participated in trials of Fevipiprant. “I felt like a completely different person. I had more get up and go, I was less wheezy and for the first time in years I felt really, really well. For me, it felt like a complete wonder drug and I can’t wait for it to be available because I really think it could make a huge difference to me.” However, she said her health went “downhill again very quickly” after the trial finished. The study, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal, examined 60 patients with moderate or severe asthma. It was designed primarily to examine the effects on inflammation in the airways by measuring the sputum eosinophil count – the amount of a white blood cell, which increases with asthma, and is used to assess the severity of the condition. While half the patients were given a placebo, those

who took Fevipiprant on top of their normal medication experienced a marked drop in the sputum eosinophil count, from an average of 5.4 per cent to 1.1 per cent over 12 weeks. “This new drug could be a game-changer for future treatment of asthma,” said lead researcher Professor Chris Brightling. He continued: “A unique feature of this study was how it included measurements of symptoms, lung function using breathing tests, sampling of the airway wall and CT scans of the chest to give a complete picture of how the new drug works. Most treatments might improve some of these features of disease, but with Fevipiprant improvements were seen with all of the types of tests. We already know that using treatments to target eosinophilic airway inflammation can substantially reduce asthma attacks. This new treatment, Fevipiprant, could likewise help to stop preventable asthma attacks, reduce hospital admissions and improve day-to-day symptoms- making it a ‘game changer’ for future treatment.” Asthma UK greeted the findings with “cautious optimism” but said they show “massive promise”. "The possibility of taking a pill instead of using an inhaler will be a very welcome one, particularly as this study focused on people who develop the condition in later life, some of whom we know can struggle with the dexterity required to use an inhaler,” said Asthma UK’s Dr Samantha Walker. She added: "More research is needed and we're a long way off seeing a pill for asthma being made available over the pharmacy counter, but it's an exciting development."

Forty sheep killed in dog attack in West Kerry A FARMER in Annascaul woke to a nightmare scenario last Friday morning when he found around 40 of his sheep had been killed. The ewes and lambs had been attacked by dogs and others were suffocated trying to escape over a six-foot gate in the panic, a vet confirmed. Five more sheep belongong to neighvours were also killed in the attack. The chairperson of the ICMSA’s Farm & Rural Affairs Committee Pat Rohan is a neighbour of the farmers affected. He urged dog owners to make sure to keep their pets under control and not allow them to roam loose.

Views From Kerry And Around The World Opening your wallet right open...

T

here I was going through my phone bill wondering why I was being charged so much more than expected, more than was estimated when I renewed my contract with the service provider. I have a bundle which includes a landline, two mobiles & broadband and it’s reasonable enough. It’s hard to figure though as there is the bundle price, and then there are service charges & usage charges. It’s a bit like a bank statement when you try to figure the reason for Account Maintenance Charges when you also pay Automated Transaction Charges, Self-Service Transaction Charges, Paper/Staff Assisted Transaction Charges (Cheques, Withdrawals, Lodgements). It’s hard to nail them down. And then, as I was perusing my phone bill, I came across 6 SMS charges amounting to €15 under the heading “Other SMS.” All the charges were made referring to the same date. These were followed by 11 more SMS a minute later on the same day. For some unknown reason& without reference a total of €42.50 is gone! Just like that!! I had neither sent nor received these text messages and nothing relating to them ever appeared on my phone. I called my service provider who informed me they were connected to premium numbers and that I must have signed up to something or other. I knew I hadn’t. Then I thought maybe I had participated in some quiz or survey or something but I wouldn’t have done that in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon. He informed me that once you contact certain numbers, even inadvertently, they keep on taking. Talk about opening up

your wallet. I explained that I didn’t sign up to anything and that I couldn’t possibly send 17 text messages in the space of a minute & that if I had I’d remember it. So I asked for the number assigned to the text messages. I was given a 5-digit number & was advised to text the word STOP in capital letters and that would stop the charges. I suggested that as it was my provider who deducted the €42.50 that they were liable for my loss. They couldn’t understand what I was implying so I told the representative at the other end that they should return the money taken from me. He insisted they didn’t have it and that I should contact the person who took the money. I agreed with him & insisted I was actually talking to him, that he was a representative of the company that deducted the money from my account. He replied they didn’t have it & that I should contact the end beneficiaries. But all I had was a 5-digit text message number. So, I rang Com-Reg who seemed to be very surprised to hear that such a racket was going on. They couldn’t or wouldn’t do anything about it but they gave me a number relating to the 5-digit SMS number. I called the number & they promised to refund me the money within 5 working days, which they did.. Anyway, it seems that there are people out there who are quite prepared to lift money out of your phone account, with the assistance of the service provider and you are powerless. From now on I’ll be very careful about opening my wallet on-line.

British government prepared papers on Charles Haughey SECRET documents have shown the British government prepared a number of papers on how to handle former Taoiseach Charles Haughey. The Northern Ireland Office had concerns about the former Fianna Fáil leader's approach to the Anglo-Irish Agreement. They prepared three reports called “Handling Mr Haughey”. The documents were released yesterday to be included in an historical archive about the Troubles.

Stargazers counting shooting stars NASA was predicting the largest celestial fireworks display over planet Earth in 20 years on Thursday night. The annual Perseid meteor shower reached its peak overnight, with as many as 50 times the usual number of shooting stars blazing across the skies. David Moore of Astronomy Ireland noted that the meteor shower was visible in both urban and rural parts of the country: “This year it is predicted it will be two or three times better than a normal year, so we were hoping for a celestial fireworks display with perhaps 50 times more shooting stars than you get on a normal night,” he said. He urged everyone across Ireland to join the national Perseid account and just count how many of these they saw every 15 minutes. “It has great scientific value, it is how we know things like this happen every year,” he said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

‘In Ireland the left hand does not seem to know what the right hand is doing’ IN RELATION to the community taking action to protect Two Mile School NS, this Killarney story will not be too unfamiliar to many of my friends, including past students and their parents. New school places are added to the system without any consideration of the impact on other schools in the general area. Total lack of foresight on the part of those "not doing the planning". Meanwhile in Ireland the issue of planning for diversity of provision is largely being ignored and there will be a big price to pay in the not too distant future. For the record I was principal of two separate English secondary schools. The London one was joint Roman Catholic and Church

Community members, as pictured with our news item last week on how locals have called for action on Two Mile School NS.

of England and owned by both churches. The second, a Catholic secondary college, was in rural Essex. I was also a member of Westminster Diocesan Education Committee for many years. In all places provision of school places was paramount in di-

ocesan and government planning. In Ireland the left hand does not seem to know what the right hand is doing and scarce resources are wasted and rural interests ignored. Alan Whelan, Beaufort

What has happened to manners? SERIOUSLY, whatever happened to good manners? I was in a sandwich bar earlier this week and this little runt walks in with her friends and goes to the counter to order her sambo. The very friendly staff member asked what she'd like...little runt rattles off her order and no please or thanks. Next question from staff member: Would you like it toasted? The answer: Yeah. The staff member asked if she was eating it inhouse. The answer: Yeah. As to the response to the question, Would you like any salad? No. She pays for her sandwich and doesn't even say thanks.... What an ungrateful little mare. It's not that hard to be polite and say please and thanks. Name and address supplied

John Brassil highlights social housing issue KERRY FIANNA FÁIL TD John Brassil has highlighted the need to tackle the housing crises by implementing a co-ordinated effort across a range of housing sectors. Deputy Brassil said it is essential “to work towards a society that provides a decent quality of life and standard of living for all”. In Deputy Brassil’s maiden speech in the Dáil he raised the social housing issue, saying it was “at crisis level”. “I am proud that my contribution was considered and the bill passed successfully through the Dáil,” he said. “I proposed giving the owners of empty houses an incentive to do them up.” The proposal involved the introduction of a grant scheme whereby those houses would be done up and the return would be that the houses would be made available for rent under a long-term rental scheme. “With over 10,000 vacant houses in

Kerry and over 5000 on the waiting list this incentive would go a long way to securing accommodation for those most in need while maintaining the aesthetic of vacant derelict houses throughout Kerry,” said Deputy Brassil. In addition, the Kerry TD has requested that rent supplement increases in Kerry be increased to match those of Cork, “to be fit for purpose to meet the high cost of rental properties in Kerry, as it is the tourist capital of Ireland and the rent prices reflect this”.

Nissan BladeGlider debuts in Rio

NISSAN unveiled the working prototypes of its futuristic Nissan BladeGlider vehicle combining zero-emissions with high-performance in a revolutionary sports car design in Rio de Janeiro at the Olympics. The vehicle, developed from concept cars first shown at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2013, have arrived in Brazil on the eve of the Olympics to symbolize future technologies that will combine Intelligent Mobility, environmentally friendly impact and sports-car driving capabilities. Nissan already sells the world’s highest-volume zeroemission car, the LEAF, and is pioneering Intelligent Mobility systems that will be deployed in a range of vehicles over coming years. After two years of work on design, engineering and development, Nissan BladeGlider has evolved further into an exciting, real-life study into the potential of advanced EV performance. High-waisted, rear-hinged dihedral doors provide a dramatic entry and exit to the cabin. The open roof of Nissan BladeGlider is reinforced with an integrated rollover protection structure, providing the exhilaration of an open-topped racecar with the safety of a coupe. Power is 100 per cent electric, with exceptional powertrain performance delivered by Nissan’s technical partner for the Nissan BladeGlider project, UK-based Williams Advanced Engineering. Maximum speed of the demonstration models is in excess of 190km/h, with 0-100km/h taking less than five seconds. Power is supplied by a high performance, five-module lithium-ion 220 kW battery. The interior of the Nissan BladeGlider reflects the vehicles’ sporting intentions, with four point safety harnesses for each occupant.

‘When King Puck was crowned, it was like the beginning of the Olympics!’ SOMETHING of the carnival atmosphere of Rio has been replicated on the streets of Killorglin, according to the chairman of the Puck Fair committee Declan Mangan. Organisers of the festival expected to welcome over 100,000 visitors over the duration of the three-day festival. Surveying all he sees from his lofty perch, the wild mountain goat crowned King Puck ends his glorious reign today. The weather gods smiled down as revellers converged on Killorglin on Gathering Day on Wednesday for the start of the festival, marked by the traditional coronation of a mountain goat and the Ireland’s longest-running horse fair. Declan Mangan said: “When the goat was crowned at 6pm on Wednesday it was an automatic release of tension – it was like the beginning of the Olympics!” A hit with locals and tourists alike, the annual Fair Day aspect of proceedings got underway yesterday, with Scattering Day (today) drawing the event to a close. Irish country music sensation Mike Denver performed last night on the festival’s main stage. This year’s festival is particularly special for 12-year-old local schoolgirl Kerry Lynch from Glounaguillagh National School, Caragh Lake, as she was recently crowned Queen of Puck Fair, and her lady-in-waiting Bláthnaid Ní Cearnaigh.

Club President Arthur Hanley and Club Captain Liam Hartnett were present when one of our last Club Teams exited from the National stages of inter-club competition on Friday last when our team went down by a very narrow margin to Nenagh in the Munster semi-final of the J.B. Carr Diamond Trophy. Captain Liam who is now entering the home-straight of his year of Captaincy can reflect on many notable performances which saw three of our teams reach the Munster semi-final stages and despite some titanic efforts by all of our teams involved they eventually succumbed to better opposing teams. Liam can be very proud of the many such performances by teams who gave it their all. The J.B. Carr team were carrying a very large deficit from their away game against Nenagh, of 4 matches to 1 and team managers, Nick O’Brien and Connie Brosnan knew that a different strategy was required if they were to stand any chance of winning their home encounter by at least a similar margin, and they fielded a new-look team with this end in mind, but unfortunately they came up just the odd match short. Match 1 Derry O’Con-

nor and John Wall won 2/1, match 2 Sheamie O’Connor and John Clifford lost 4/3, match 3 Dermot Roche and Enda Curtayne won 5/4, match 4 John Hickey and Padraig Griffin lost 3/2, and match 5 Brian Fitzgerald and Donie MacSweeney were called in when they were in a good position to win their match. The Killarney Scratch Cup was played on Saturday the 6th of August, a good entry of 60 contended for this prestigious trophy which has been won in the past by some golfing legends such as Joe Carr (who sponsored, and gave his name to the trophy mentioned above) and by Killarney’s own Michael Guerin. The morning round was played on Killeen course and a clear leader emerged in the form of former Irish international Peter O’Keeffe, of Douglas Golf Club, who shot a very commendable 73, indeed anything less than 80 would have been good, given the weather conditions, Peter was in the very first group out and he posted a 72 on Mahony’s Point in the afternoon, and a score of 1 over par overall was going to be hard to beat, but it was beaten by Cathal Butler of Kinsale who shot a 69, and with a 76 in the morning he equalled Peter O’Keeffe’s score, and won by virtue of the better back 18 holes. This was Cathal’s third scratch cup win this year, and he is a name to watch out for in the future. In third place came Killarney’s Shane Horgan who also played great golf and came up with just one shot more than the winning score, and equalled the winning score of last year. Results were 1st Cathal Butler, Kinsale, 76 and 69 total 145, 2nd Peter O’Keeffe, Douglas, 73 and 72 total 145, 3rd Shane Horgan, Killarney, 146. Best score Killeen, Anton O’Callaghan, Douglas, 76, best score Mahony’s Point Gary O’Flaherty, Cork Golf Club, 69, best nett overall Con O’Callaghan, Kanturk, 144. Sunday the 7th was a singles stroke competition on Mahony’s Point. Results were: 1st Patrick Buckley (12) 66, 2nd Ian Twiss (14) 66, 3rd Derek Twiss (22) 67, 4th John P. Footnote, Sunday the 7th was the Lady Captain Mary O’Rourke’s charity fundraising day, Mary chose Breast Cancer Research as her chosen charity and mostly all played in pink apparel to signify this very worthy cause. Captain Liam encouraged the Men’s Club members to also play in pink in solidarity with the Ladies Club, and a good number of those who played did so, Mary remarked afterwards that the Male members had also generously contributed to her charity raffle, and were to be commended for their efforts in helping towards raising awareness of this most deserving cause, which has afflicted so very many of our membership.

Golf Classic - This Friday Killarney Rugby Club has something to focus the minds of those playing golf in this Friday’s Rugby Club Golf Classic at Mahony’s Point course. A novel Hole-in-One competition on the iconic, picturesque 18th hole will certainly challenge even the best. Open to both ladies and gents as part of the Classic, the first player who strikes a hole-inone will win a top of the range bicycle and gear from O’Sullivan’s Cycle worth up to €5,000! What a way to finish a wonderful day of good fun and friendly rivalry. The Rugby Club has had a fantastic response from the business community once again and with over 50 teams of three taking part it promises to be a great day out. Great sponsors have supported the event from the off and with a mighty BBQ lunch

midway through the golf, and so the back nine will be a formidable test! The club wishes to thank the many sponsors and supporters in establishing this event. It is planned as an inaugural event on the local annual calendar and the club has great support from all sporting codes in the locality again and this just shows you how stone mad for sport and ‘craic’ we are in Killarney and Kerry. The Hole-in-One will cap a series of great prizes including ‘Nearest the Pin’; ‘Longest Drive’ and a monster Raffle throughout the day for a bundle of great surprises. The club also thanks Killarney Golf & Fishing Club for their generous accommodation in ‘Heaven’s Reflex’ and to Paul Cotter and his catering team at “The Chapel”. So fun for all those involved and who knows we may have a brand new cyclist in next year’s Ring of Kerry! Minis Restarting: Our Minis section are due to begin their new season on Saturday, the 03rd of September at Aghadoe. Rugby has really become a popular sport in the Killarney area and this is due in no small part to the very hard work and dedication of our amazing coaches. If you have the time and an interest in Rugby, why not give Minis coordinator Liam Murphy a shout on 087-4145662. No major experience

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

Last Friday night we held our annual evening fishing competition at Barrifinny Lake with the kind assistance of Inland Fisheries Ireland Regional Office in Macroom. A good turn out of keen juvenile anglers went off in pursuit of rainbow trout and the resulting top five rods on the night were as follows: 1) Erin Moloney 2) Ryan Moloney 3) Ian O’Leary 4) Cathal Coffey 5) Fionn O’Leary Following on from Friday nights activities, the club took to the water on Sunday to host the visiting Caragh Bridge Angling Club on their annual visit. Windy conditions curtailed the scope for fishing greatly but it didn’t stop the catering crew on Inisfallen Island as they came up trumps again with a fine spread for the visitors and local members alike. This Sunday we fish in the inaugural outing for the Tom Bambury Memorial Trophy on Lough Lein. The event will carry an entry fee of €20 per member and is on a pick your partner basis. Commencing at Ross at 10.30 and all boats landed for 6pm. Weigh in at shed shortly afterwards, standard 10” to V applies. Entry fee will be donated to the St. Francis School in Beaufort. Club members interested in fishing should contact any committee member up to Saturday night at the latest.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Can Kerry defeat Dublin in the battle for the Sam Maguire? FOLLOWING last weekend's quarter-finals Dublin have paved their way for an All-Ireland semi-final spot versus arch-rivals Kerry in two weeks' time. On the other side of the draw Mayo just squeezed out Tyrone by a single point for a novel clash with Tipperary, the real surprise team of this year's football championship. Can Kerry down the all-conquering Dubs? They ran through Clare in the quarter-final, but Dublin showed on Sunday last that they have no sign of weakness v Donegal. They were missing some key players but the re placements proved just as effective. None more so than wing back John Small who outshone friend and foe. In the second half Ciaran Kilkenny moved from wing forward to wingback to play a blinder. Dublin won 1-15 to 1-10. Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice

will have noted that Dublin can do without 3 of the normal starting 15 and still keep winning. Donegal did make a comeback in the second half but Dublin were able to survive with five points to spare. The pace of all the Dubs is frightening. Indeed two of their full-back line, McMahon and Cooper, strode upfield to score a point each. Dublin cut lanes through the middle with the ball carrier having several options with teammates coming off the shoulder to drive forward. The Kerry defence is quite good, but there is a lack of pace with the four options of Kerry midfield pairings. Kerry's problems start there facing Fenton and either Macauley, or Bastick. Star certainly has not got the legs for this opposition and neither does captain Bryan Sheahan. Diarmuid Connolly, operating at full forward, until he was sent off for a

second yellow card, was their most dangerous forward. He is a splendid player but plays on the edge all the time. What Kerry might do is to get Paul Murphy to act as a Hoover under a losing midfield in a role that Paul Galvin adopted with such telling effect. He has the legs of youth to stop the Dubs knifing through the middle. The Rathmore man is small in stature but he is a hardy boy.

Dr Crokes

garvan-Tuosist 4-07. Seán O’Keeffe of East Kerry Coiste na nÓg, presented Glenflesk Captain Peter Cronin with the division 5 trophy. He congratulated both teams and mentors for the way their teams went about the game in an open and fair manner. He thanked the referee and Fitzgerald Stadium and congratulated Glenflesk. DIVISION 6 Cordal/Scartaglen 6-21 Spa 4-5 In an open sporting game, played in Fitzgerald stadium, Cordal/Scartaglen proved the stronger on the night and took the division 6 East Region U14 League against a determined Spa team, last Monday night. Final score: Cordal/Scartaglen 6-21 Spa 4-5. Sean O’ Sullivan, chairman East Kerry Coiste na nÓg, presented the trophy to the Cordal/Scartaglen team joint captains, Nathan O’Rourke and Sean O’ Connor. He thanked the referee and Fitzgerald Stadium and praised both teams for the sporting game and congratulated the winning Cordal/ Scartaglen team. DIVISION 6 FINAL Spa V Cordal/Scartaglen County Championship Three East Kerry teams took to the field in the County Championship last week. In a local derby, East Kerry hosted Dr Crokes in Rathmore in the quarter final. The first half was a close affair, and East Kerry led by the minimum at the break, 0-6 to 0-5. East Kerry made changes and took the momentum in the second half to run out winners 2-13 to 1-7. Firies played 2 games, winning both- their round 3 back game, away against Dingle and quarter final against West Kerry. Many thanks to Rathmore CLG for the use of their facilities, in particular to Donal Murphy, Chairman, Michael Cronin, Runaí and Dermie Moynihan for the hospitality and help.

Special thanks also to Denis McCrohan, Derry McCarthy and Tony Moynihan for all the great assistance, including with presentation for the game. Congratulations Well done to the Kerry Junior team and management on winning the All Ireland Junior Football Final and especially to the players from East Kerry. More about that in the weeks ahead Mayo lost their Connacht title but have benefitted from the extra matches via the qualifiers. They just edged out Tyrone 13 points to 12. U11 BOYS EAST KERRY LEAGUE Our U11 boys had a marvellous win against Beaufort last weekend; Firies 5-26 Beaufort 1-06 in the East Kerry Competition. Note that the previously postponed match against Spa is rescheduled to take place on Sunday, 14th August in Páirc Eamonn at 12 noon. Best of luck boys! Next on the schedule, the boys are away to Castleisland Desmond’s. Check out our Facebook; search Firies Coiste na nÓg for the latest updates. Best of luck boys! MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Congratulations to the Firies Minors and Management who overcame West Kerry last week to the County Minor

nal. However at this stage it is looking like a Dublin v Mayo final. We wait to see who is fit enough in the Kerry camp to play. Anthony Maher is short in match time so he may not make the starting 15, but will certainly come on at some stage. Waterford Waterford were magnificent v Kilkenny holding a four-point lead as the clock ticked on and looked dead certs for a place in the final as they bid to secure the McCarthy Cup. However they shot five wides, left the Cats purring and then came the Kilkenny goal. It was a magnificent game of real quality. Kilkenny will be better prepared for the replay tomorrow in Thurles, where Tipperary get my vote to advance. Stadium plans for 2023 Der Brosnan, chairman of the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee, will note that the Irish government is preparing to spend €320m to underwrite the bid to host the Irish bid for 2023 Rugby World Cup. If it is successful the terraces will have to provide seating, but Killarney will be the real winner.
