"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb
Hero Declan to the rescue on High Street
WHEN Declan Corcoran popped into town in Killarney on his day off he had no idea his life-saving nursing skills would be put to the toughest of tests. Off-duty nurse Declan went to the aid of Gabriel Divilly, 58, when he suffered a massive heart attack on High Street. Declan, 46, spent 40 excruciating minutes giving CPR to Gabriel in his desperate fight to keep him alive. For Athenry visitors Claire and Gabriel Divilly, the date May 8, 2013 will be forever ingrained in their memories. A day of sightseeing and shopping was brought to an abrupt end when Gabriel complained of dizziness before dropping in the street. “I screamed with fright. I knew in a matter of moments he was gone because he stopped breathing altogether and started turning blue,” Claire said. Declan’s wife Tina witnessed the heart attack horror unfold and rang him for help. Declan, from Milltown, said: “I came running up the street and I could see the man was turning blue. He had been down about six minutes at that stage and there was no pulse.” Keeping a cool head, Declan immediately started CPR on
Gabriel. Siobhan McAllister, a member of staff from Scéal Eile restaurant across the street, ran and got a nearby defibrillator and Declan shocked Gabriel twice, bringing him back to cling onto life. “I found a weak pulse and kept giving CPR until the ambulance arrived. The sweat was dripping off me, but we were always told the best thing was to keep going if we thought there was any chance at all,” he said. Claire said: “Gabriel and I and our family will be forever indebted to him. I could have been a widow without Declan bringing my husband back. He was sent by an angel.” Declan was honoured at the Pride of Ireland Awards this week at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Donnybrook, where he was presented with the Emergency Service Hero Award by X-Factor star Mary Byrne and Eurovision legend Linda Martin. Declan said: “I feel very proud and it is recognition of all nurses.” A special programme will be broadcast on UTV Ireland this Sunday, September 18, at 7.30pm, capturing all the emotional moments of the event.

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER OF THE BEST KIND IT’S not often you come face to face with a real-life hero, but when I met Declan Corcoran, Milltown, as he was reunited with the man whose life he saved I was struck by his unassuming nature. It was heart-warming to see him return to the scene of the event on High Street as he chatted with Gabriel Divilly and his wife Claire two years after their first, crucial, encounter. The reunion was filmed for a special programme to be aired on UTV Ireland this Sunday evening. Presenting Declan with a Pride of Ireland award this week, singer Linda Martin said: “Nurses as far as I’m concerned are angels. You couldn’t
pay them enough money or credit them with enough thanks. They are magic people.” Big congratulations to Declan on his award. In other news, Killarney Advertiser catches up with psychiatric nursing staff who are concerned as to why the €8m state-of-the-art Deer Lodge in Killarney has not yet opened (see page 18). Finally, the very best of luck to the Kerry minor team as they chase the historic three-in-a-row All-Ireland title this Sunday.

Kerry councillor to sleep outside to highlight homelessness KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL member Niall Kelleher is getting set to sleep outdoors in a bid to raise awareness of homelessness. Councillor Kelleher will sleep out in the grounds of Cork City Gaol on October 21. “I am hoping to help shine a light on the issue of homelessness in Ireland today. I am joining others to raise funds to support the vital work of Focus Ireland and their aim to end homelessness in Ireland,” said Cllr Kelleher. Family homelessness has reached historic proportions in Ireland with more than 2100 children living in emergency homeless accommodation in Ireland often unable to get to school, rarely getting a home cooked meal and sinking into darkness. “I don't want to accept this as today's landscape in Ireland so I'm joining my peers to make a difference,” he said. “As a member of a local authority dealing with housing applicants that struggle to find homes to rent due to our rent caps and the lack of property to rent, I see how people are couch surfing with the help of family and friends. Nobody should find themselves in this position. I hope to highlight this issue while at the same time raising much needed funds for a charity that deals with major problem.” You can lend your support by sponsoring Niall at https://www.justgiving.com/Fundraising/ niall-kelleher

‘Losing weight has been the battle of my life’ CONGRATULATIONS to Killarney lady Siubhan Lewis who has been named Woman of the Year 2016 District Finalist with Slimming World. Siubhan, of Muckross, said: “After I had my first child in 1977 I didn't put on any significant weight. That might have had to do with climbing down a cliff face during a camping holiday some weeks before the birth. "In those early years my husband and I led a very active life – walking and climbing on the Kerry hills, in woodlands, by lake and along the coast; holidays cycling around the Beara Peninsula; having a very distressed Brendan (our first) on the back of the bike in torrential rain on the way home from Sneem; cycling every day during our lunch break." Three and four years later there were two further arrivals. “My long story of getting heavier appeared to start. While this was very gradual by the time the children had reached First Communion age it was not a pleasant experience looking for something nice to wear,” said Siubhan. "Since the home birth of number five in 1987 it has been an uphill battle. My increasing weight affected everything I did – the difficulty and expense of buying clothes." Eating had become an addiction and it affected Siubhan’s feeling of self-worth, she added. “A particularly low point when I was told in the post office ‘Congratulations, you're expecting another baby' - which I was not!” said Siubhan. For most of 30 years the Muckross resident has been joining slimming groups of various kinds. "I would lose a stone. But then put it back on again – and more," she said. Then in 2012 Siubhan suffered health problems and was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. “The fear was terrible, there were some awful experiences but the treatment and care were superb and after a year and a half I came through with flying colours,” she said. "This was a second chance at life. Clearly I was now making life and death decisions. In June 2015 her daughter Ide suggested she and Siubhan should try Slimming World. "Although she had no significant weight problem

Question
I make regular donations to charity. Can I claim tax back on my donations? Answer
The tax code provides for tax relief for “eligible charities” and other “approved bodies” including schools and educational institutions. Revenue lists bodies that have been granted a charitable tax exemption on its website. If you make a donation of at least €250 to an eligible charity, tax relief on your donation is allowed to the charity rather than to you (the donor). Cash donations made in instalments, such as by standing order, also qualify. The charity can claim a refund of tax on your donation at the end of the tax year. Relief is granted to the charity at a blended rate of 31% rather than the rate you actually pay. The donor is not entitled to a repayment of any part of the tax that has been repaid to the charity. The amount repaid to a charity for any tax year cannot be more than the amount of tax actually paid by the donor for that year. For example, if your income tax liability for 2015 is €350 (which you have paid), the repayment to the charity is restricted to that amount. The minimum qualifying donation for individuals in a year of assessment is €250 and the maximum qualifying donation is €1 million. (Note that corporate donations are treated differently.) If you are willing to allow the charity claim a refund on your donation, you need to fill out a form - either an “Annual Certificate” (CHY4) for a single tax year, or an “Enduring Certificate” (CHY3) which lasts for up to five years. You can find more information about tax refunds to charitable organisations in Revenue’s booklet about the Charitable Donation Scheme (pdf). Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below. Siubhan Lewis.
she suggested otherwise," said Siubhan. "She and I would do this together. Then that historic day. Tuesday, July 7, 2015, Ide collected me and we went along to our first Slimming World session in The Brehon.” Over this past year Siubhan felt she had two “guardian angels”. “Our leader Cheryl Cavanagh inspired with her own story, was endlessly helpful, her wit made everything enjoyable. Ide supported, cajoled, threatened. Anybody who says there are no angels doesn't know what they are talking about,” said Siubhan. Now, at 35kg lighter, Siubhan’s life has been transformed. "These past months I have started to walk every evening with neighbours Colm and Kathleen as well as our dog and their two dogs,” she said. “I’m being told at every turn, ‘you look great’ or ‘you look ten years younger’….’your husband better watch out!’ – though he doesn’t believe that! Life couldn’t be better.” Slimming World meetings take place in The Brehon Hotel, Killarney on Tuesdays at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm and in the Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee on Wednesdays at 9.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Kerry take on Galway in All-Ireland Minor Football Championship Final
The Kerry minor team. PICTURE: DON MACMONAGLE
Best of luck to the Kerry minors THIS Sunday sees the sharp-shooting Kerry minor footballers take on Galway in Croke Park, with a 1.15pm throw-in. The road to Croke Park started way back on April 13 in Dungarvan when Kerry got their season of to a good start with an emphatic victory over the local side. A month later, Kerry had six points to spare over Clare at Milltown-Malbay and they then had to wait until July 3 for the Munster final with old adversaries Cork, a game that Kerry eventually won by six points despite the concession of three goals.
The quarter-final and semi-final victories over Derry and Kildare were due to exceptional second-half displays on both occasions and there is no doubt that Kerry are well worth their final place. Opponents Galway come into the game with a fine pedigree also. They had ten points to spare in their opening game against Roscommon and then defeated Mayo by six points in the Connaught final. They defeated Laois by seven points in the quarter-finals and then accounted for many people’s favourites for eventual honours,
Donegal, far more comfortably than the four points winning margin would suggest. While Kerry have won the previous two All Irelands in the grade, as manager Peter Keane pointed out at the team press briefing, this particular group of players and their management are looking to make their own bit of history in Croke Park on Sunday. Some players of course have experience of All-Ireland final day from last year and others were part of the Hogan Cup colleges victory with St Brendan’s in Croke Park. We wish all involved the very best of luck on Sunday.

KERRY GAA legend Kieran Donaghy has tipped Mayo to win the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final saying he believes the red and green will “sneak it in the end”. Speaking during the #madforsam Irish TV Mayo preview held in the Park Hotel in Kiltimagh on Tuesday night, Donaghy told presenters Maria Walsh and Anthony Hennigan: “I would love the Mayo players to have their day in the sun after all this team has given to their home county in the past few years. “They are all fine players and there is massive respect for this Mayo team, they have shown great mental strength to keep coming back over the years. “It will all come down to whoever takes the chance and whoever the chance goes to will win the game. It’s whoever gets the lucky break and I hope they get the rub of the green. I think they will sneak it in the end.” Donaghy said it was sportsmanship that worked for Kerry and it was evident from the work the Mayo team are putting in that this is also key for them. “There is great respect for all players and we know they will die for their team. The advice I would have for Mayo is to use Aidan O’Shea and the forwards as close to the goal as possible.”

Investigation into abduction and disappearance of Charles Brooke Pickard GARDAÍ at Killarney this week commenced searching and excavating a site at Derrennageeha, Ballaghisheen Pass, Waterville, as part of their ongoing investigation into the abduction and disappearance of Charles Brooke Pickard from White Strand at Castlecove on April 26, 1991. The site is located in a Coillte forest off the Waterville/ Ballaghisheen road, approximately 20 kilometres from Waterville. Members of the Defence Forces are assisting An Garda Siochána in the operation and Gardaí have also consulted with an anthropologist on the matter. The search is expected to last at least a week and the family of Charles Brooke Pickard are being kept updated. On Friday, April 26, 1991, Charles Brooke Pickard was abducted and driven away in his van by a number of males from the White Strand at Castlecove and has not been seen since. On May 16, 1991, his van, a navy Ford Transit van, was found burned out in Shronaloughnane Forest, in the townland of Derrennageeha near Waterville, 27 miles from where he was abducted. Gardaí have again renewed their appeal for any information from members of the public which they may have in relation to this matter. “The operation which commenced today is part of the ongoing investigation into the abduction and disappearance of Charles Brooke Pickard,” said Superintendent Flor Murphy. “It is over 25 years since Charles Brooke Pickard was last seen being bundled into his van near Castlecove, Co Kerry. He was 43 years of age at the time and his wife Penny and four young children were left behind. “I am again appealing to the public for any information in relation to the events surrounding the abduction and disappearance of Charles Brooke Pickard. “There are people who may not have been in a position to assist the investigation 25 years ago but with the passage of time their circumstances may have changed. Relationships, friendships, associations and loyalties may have changed and people may be in a better position to help us now." Any information should be forwarded to investigating Gardaí at Killarney Garda Station 0646631222 or any Garda station. Crimestoppers are also offering a reward for any information which may assist the investigation.

Why is this state-of-the-art facility lying idle? Eve Kelliher hears how mental health services staff are disappointed that the €8m Deer Lodge in Killarney is not yet open
Cormac Williams, Mary Delaney, Pat Murphy, Ruth Adams and Finbarr Murphy outside Deer Lodge.
RESPONSE FROM HEALTH SERVICE EXECUTIVE "THE Deer Lodge facility in Killarney is a purpose built 40-bed facility for the mental health services. This development is a very welcomed addition to the Kerry Mental Health Services and will allow for the improved provision of services and therapeutic intervention in rehabilitative and later life mental health. "The construction phase of Deer Lodge, Killarney is complete and we are in the process of taking the necessary steps in opening this facility. "The Kerry Mental Health Services has set up a Commissioning Group with the responsibility of overseeing the many crucial processes which are required to progress the opening
of Deer Lodge. This group meets regularly to discuss issues pertaining to Deer Lodge. The membership of the group includes staff from Kerry Mental Health Services, residents of the O’Connor Unit and family members/carers. "A meeting was organised with clients from the O’Connor Unit and their families for a walkthrough of Deer Lodge in early 2016. Feedback from those who attended was very positive and all suggestions/comments were considered by the Commissioning Group. "The Kerry Mental Health Services have started the process of registration of Deer Lodge as an approved facility with the Mental Health Commission."
THEY were extremely impressed when a team of psyWHEN a team of psychiatric nurses received a tour of Deer Lodge on St Margaret’s Road in Killarney they were highly impressed. Deer Lodge is a purpose-built 40-bed mental health services facility, which will provide therapeutic intervention in rehabilitative, and later-life mental health. The €8m building was finished in the third quarter of 2015 but is not due to open until the first quarter of 2017, noted Cormac Williams of the Kerry Psychiatric Nurses’ Association. “It is a superb building, with 40 ensuite bedrooms – we are talking the in terms of the Gresham Hotel league if we were to compare it with a hotel,” Mr Williams told Killarney Advertiser. His colleague Mary Delaney added: “It’s a shame this beautiful building is lying idle. We had a tour of it when it was finished and it is so impressive, with a hairdressing salon, state-of-the-art bathrooms and kitchens.” Referring to recent calls from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), in conjunction with Nursing Homes Ireland, encouraging “inactive” nurses to return to work to meet the growing demands for nurses, Mr Williams said the nursing shortage is a result of “short-sighted” policies which led to a reduction in student nurse placements available as well as a mass exodus of newly qualified nurses from Ireland in search of better pay and working conditions. And while the HSE awaits increased numbers of nurses to come onstream, such facilities as Deer Lodge and a €2m, four-bed high-observation/challenging behaviour unit at the Acute Admission Unit, at University Hospital Kerry, in Tralee, are “lying idle”, added Mr Williams. “If we are ever to open these new but still idle facilities and expand community services in the county, we will need to substantially increase mental health nurse recruitment in Kerry,” he said. “Given the current chronic shortages of mental health nurses, in the short-term the only way to recruit nurses is to ask retired and inactive mental health nurses to return to work with the HSE in Kerry on a part-time basis for a number of years.”
Couple return to hotel 41 years after honeymoon AS HONEYMOONERS, Mary and Garvin Godfrey first visited The Dromhall Hotel in July 1975. The couple, from Sion Mills, Co Tyrone, did not return to Killarney again until 1990 and at that time could not exactly pinpoint the hotel they had stayed in. Recently they came across the original bill for The Dromhall Hotel and with the hotel name established, all that waited was a return visit to Killarney and The Dromhall Hotel which was to happen this August – some 41 years later, “A friend of the couple, Sheila Burns, contacted the hotel to advise us of the return of the Godfreys to Killarney and to The Dromhall Hotel 41 years later,” said Susan Randles of The Dromhall. The couple and their friends were once again greeted by Kay Randles who invited them to lunch in Kayne’s Bistro at The Dromhall where memories and stories were told. Mary Godfrey left the original bill with the Randles family. “With acquaintances re-established we know it will not be nearly so long before the Godfreys return to Killarney and The Dromhall Hotel again,” said Susan. QUEST KILLARNEY ADVENTURE RACE IN IRELAND it’s not uncommon to get four seasons in one day, so it is important to be prepared and have the right gear.
What equipment/gear do I need? The race organisers provide a high level of safety cover along the route but there will not be marshals around every corner, so it is vital that all competitors bring the following mandatory kit with them from the start. •Basic first aid kit (minimum of one dressing pad, or field dressing, bandage and plasters) •Map of the route (included in your race pack) •Survival blanket and whistle •Appropriate food and drink; there will be limited water re-filling points on the course •Cycle helmet, bike repair kit, spare tube and pump •Hat, gloves and waterproof jacket •Suitable footwear (trail runners) •Backpack or bum bag. All kits will be checked on the morning of the race. You will not be allowed to race without mandatory kit. We will provide kayaks and buoy aids.
What type of runners should I use? ONE of the most important things for adventure racing is footwear. Don’t wear your brand-new runners. Get a pair of trail shoes that give you support and grip. Your feet will get wet on the run sections and on the kayak. Visit O’Sullivan’s Outdoor Shop on New Street, Killarney, to get advice on tips and gear you need for race day. If you have any questions on the route or the gear required feel free to email us at info@eliteevents.ie
Registration closed today for Quest Killarney. Don’t miss out!

Wedding bells for Regina and Adrian BY EVE KELLIHER
T
HE shores of Lough Leane provided the perfect backdrop to wedding pictures in Regina Heffernan and Adrian Cronin’s wedding album. Regina, from Callinafercy, Milltown, and Adrian, from Kilgobnet, exchanged vows recently in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Milltown in a Mass led by Rev Kevin Sullivan. The newlyweds posed for the camera of Tara Donoghue Photography at scenic Killarney Golf & Fishing Club en route to their reception, at the Killarney Oaks Hotel, where Billy O’Connor and his team pulled out all the stops to ensure a lavish celebration. Helping the newlyweds lead the revelry were both sets of parents, Josephine and Michael Heffernan and Josephine and Dermot Cronin. Regina and Adrian’s paths first crossed many years ago in Killorglin and they got engaged last Christmas. Regina’s sisters Andrea and Verona were bridesmaids while Adrian’s brother Cathal was best man with his friend Francis Russell as groomsman.

Mother-of-the-bride Josephine baked the delicious wedding cake. The bridal hairstyling was by Marion's Hair Studio in Milltown, with makeup was by Marilyn McSweeney, Killarney. All the flower arrangements were by Blossoms Flowers, Killorglin. The church music was by Finbarr Coffey and Jack Healy and pianist JP Murphy entertained guests at the drinks reception while the band Katsquire ensured the dance floor remained full throughout the evening. “Adrian has a great interest in and love for music so he booked all the music for our wedding,” said the bride. The newlyweds enjoyed a mini-moon in Ireland and are currently planning a honeymoon abroad in the New Year. “We had the best day ever, we loved being surrounded by family and friends from home and abroad,” said Regina.

WIND and, as the day wore on, driving rain, failed to dampen spirits at the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show on Sunday. Fleming’s Farm, at Grenagh, Fossa, morphed into a pop-up town from morning onwards with a colourful tented metropolis springing up in spite of gusty blasts from the east. A spirit of neighbourliness and the old-style meitheal prevailed with many hands making light work when it came to erecting stands, and shelter offered to organisations whose marquee may have failed to rise or been blown about. As Killarney Advertiser caught up with visitors and volunteers, we found good cheer to be the order of the day with banter flowing along with the ever-present cuppa. The ploughing event has, since it started three years ago, already helped to generate in excess of €60,000 for local organisations and there was a hugely positive and sizeable presence onsite from this year’s beneficiaries, the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus. The championships are organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and this year featured chose on 200 trade stands, traditional and modern method ploughing demonstrations, sheep dog trials, sheep shearing competitions, harvesting demos, machinery showcases and traditional farm practice exhibitions.

THE heavens opened but thousands of people along with organisers gritted their teeth and got on with things at the South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show on Sunday. While we arrived in glorious sunshine, conditions deteriorated as the afternoon progressed. But although the elements forced the cancellation of some planned activities, more or less everything went ahead as planned with plenty to keep the many people that remained amused. “Obviously, the weather impacted on what was shaping up to be an incredible family day out. There was a huge crowd there from early morning but when the skies opened, it changed everything,” said Killarney Vintage and Veteran Club chairman Tom Leslie. “It was disappointing considering the enormous amount of work that went into ensuring the public had a great day out but you can never tell with the Kerry weather. “Every forecast we had consulted and all the advice we received was that the weather would hold well until around seven o’clock but it came earlier than that and there was just nothing we could do.” He praised all the volunteers, stewards, on-site workers, those who set up the venue and dismantled it, the four charities who put in so much work and the sponsors who made it all possible. “I also wish to thank the thousands of people that came to support us on the day. They might have gone home a bit wet but we hope they enjoyed the earlier part of the day. Hopefully, we’ll be back next year and the weather might be kinder,” Tom said.

able alternative to delay such procedures, while re-firming and reshaping the face safely and effectively. So whether your face is round, square, oval or diamond-shaped, the youthful V-line contours of the face can be redefined and enhanced to help regain your perfect shape and youthful appearance. Over time, age and a stressful lifestyle take a toll on their true beauty. Physical changes will take place that will change the shape and structure of their features. At whatever age, biological or hormonal variations (weight gain, regimens and medications), may cause women to experience some form of heavy jowl, puffy cheeks, a wrinkled and puffy neck. As a special offer, you can buy three and get the fourth facial free. Call Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966 for more details.

MINDFULNESS is a real buzzword at Killarney Community College at the moment. Mindfulness coach Susan Barrett will address parents on Wednesday, September 28, at 7pm in the school hall where she will speak about coping with busy lifestyles and managing the demands of raising teenagers. Parents from all secondary schools welcome. This event follows a recent Mindful Teens workshop at Killarney Community College for transition year students. It was led by psychotherapist Harriet McGuigan, who is accredited with Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapists). She worked with the TY students of Killarney Community College showing them new ways that they could support themselves to help keep some balance in their lives. TY student Jordan O’Connor said: “I didn’t know what the day was going to be like, I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it as much as I did, it showed me how to relax and how to keep calm in situations.” TY co-ordinator Kerri McCarthy said: “It was a great start to our TY school term, by introducing mindfulness to our students it equips them with strategies to deal with stressful situations, nowadays students lead such busy lives and sometimes they nearly forget to breathe so by taking the time to meditate proved very worthwhile for them.”
VINYASA YOGA EXPLAINED Elaine O’Donoghue of Navé Yoga highlights the benefits of breath-synchronised movement VINYASA means "breath-synchronized movement" and Vinyasa yoga is a series of poses that will move you through the power of inhaling and exhaling. Vinyasa movements are smoothly flowing and almost dance-like, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow or just Flow. Like all styles of yoga, Vinyasa has both mental and physical benefits. Physically, sweat expels toxins and re-energizes your body. Mentally, the synchronized breathing relaxes your mind and helps to release any blockage of energy flow throughout your body.
Is Vinyasa suitable for beginners? Absolutely! A Vinyasa class is both a great place to start and to continue challenging yourself. Each class offers options within the postures for different levels, so it is suitable for everybody. If you like to focus on the power of breathing and flowing movement through poses, you will enjoy the Vinyasa style. At Navé Yoga we also teach gentle Hatha yoga, pregnancy yoga, mother and baby yoga and yoga for children. Join our open day this Saturday for free taster classes. INGREDIENTS 600 ml cream Vanilla pods 10 egg yolks 60g caster sugar plus 100g for glaze METHOD
Preheat oven to 150ºC. Put cream in a pot with vanilla and bring to a gentle boil. Meanwhile mix the egg yolks and sugar together, add the cream then pass it through a sieve. Place this mixture in a ramekin, put in a tray and place water around ramekins until it comes up on ¾ of the ramekins. Cook for 30 minutes until the custard has set - a gentle shake should determine this – if the custard wobbles put it back in the oven for another five minutes. Allow to cool. To serve place sugar over the custard and use a blow torch to caramelise the sugar. This recipe serves eight.

Grace Notes The choir
Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on the glories of choral music
NUMEROUS times over the past few weeks I have written about the collaboration of different artists. I have mentioned how important it is for people involved in the arts to come together and inspire each other. This week I have been thinking about how wonderful it is when people, who are complete strangers, come together and combine their voices to create one unique sound. My latest music venture is the setting up of the Killarney
School of Music Choirs with my very good friend, Jayme Linehan. It is also very important that we remember that not everybody who loves to sing actually wants to be a solo singer. The most important thing is that everybody share their gift in some way, be it as a soloist or as part of a group. A love for music is a far better and more powerful thing when it is shared with others. The blended sound of human voices is something that
has held people's attention for centuries. There is not only safety in numbers, there is also great power in numbers. For the best part of my singing career so far I have sung as a soloist, yet some of my fondest memories are those of when I shared the stage with others. My time in the college choir trained my ear and taught me to sight sing, something I always hated! My time in the opera taught me to feed off the energy of others. My advice is, share your gift. Join a team. Join a choir. •Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
LUKE 16:1-13: As often with the parables of Jesus, this one is intended to shock in order to make us think. Jesus is not praising the injustice of the servant, but his purposefulness in preparing for the future. In your experience what difference does it make when you are purposeful and energetic instead of lethargic? It was his master’s call to account that galvanised the servant into action. What have been the experiences, or people, that have galvanised you into action when you had been somewhat half-hearted in your efforts? Who have been the people whose energy, drive and astuteness have been an inspiration to you in how to handle difficult situations? “No servant can be the slave of two masters.” When have you experienced the truth of this statement? John Byrne, OSA
CHOOSE TO SHARE GOD’S WEALTH
THE actions of the manager, in this Gospel, on hearing that he is to be fired are counter-intuitive. Instead of storing up wealth by demanding payment immediately or charging extra, he wipes the portion of “interest” owed to him from their dept. He is thinking of the long-term, that they might in turn show kindness to him when he is in need. Jesus sees the gift this use of wealth has in the life of the poor and praises it. The Christian life is a call to stewardship in which the wealth we handle is not our own but wealth God wishes the entire world would share. Challenging as it may be we are called to reflect on our use of wealth. Jesus makes clear that we must choose – the wealth of God or the wealth of this world. Siobhain Tighe
KINGDOM ECONOMICS
IF YOU think that all the parables that Jesus told were nice stories about people of integrity then today’s parable will surely make you think again. This is a parable about a scoundrel, yet it praises him and his wisdom. The manager has been given notice by his CEO and he decides to even up the tables, while he still can, for those who are struggling to pay their debts to the company. The manager is praised for his astuteness, he has his priorities straight, he is happy to let debt go, to redistribute the load. Of course, there is self-interest on his part but Jesus is telling us that the only value the money really has is in the way it is disposed of and in doing this the manager wins the hearts and minds of the workers. The manager won’t be the most successful man on the planet compared to the “children of the light” who are more concerned with accounts than with real people. The manager is free-spirited and can be trusted to value what is really important. He knows that none of this material wealth is permanent and uses the authority that he has to relieve the suffering of those who are indebted to his company. Yes, he is a bit of a scoundrel, but Jesus liked scoundrels, once their efforts were put to good use.

Major changes in Kerry under new round of Leader funding POTENTIAL applicants are being advised that there are major changes to the process involved in accessing Leader funding under the new programme that is due to start in Kerry in October. Both South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd (SKDP) and North, East & West Kerry Development (NEWKD) will be holding a series of public meetings in the coming weeks to advise those interested in applying for funding of the new requirements. Circa €10m is available under the new Leader programme in Kerry which represents a 60% drop when compared to the last programme. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that in light of the major budget cuts for Kerry, which are down by some 60%, in addition to a number of other significant changes resulting from government policy decisions, significant changes have been made in the way the Leader programme will be rolled out in the county this time. Both the business and the community and voluntary sectors will be affected by these changes and we strongly recommend that as many people as possible attend the upcoming information meetings. SKDP’s public meetings will be held on Tuesday, September 20, in Killarney (Travel Inn) and Wednesday, September 21, in Killorglin (Library Place). The meetings start at 8pm. NEWKD will hold their meetings in Dingle (Skellig Hotel) on Wednesday, September 21, Listowel (Seanchaí Centre) on Monday, September 26, Castleisland (River Island) on Tuesday, September 27, and Tralee (Áras an Phobail) on Monday, October 3. Expressions of Interest from applicants will be sought for projects under the headings of Rural Tourism, Enterprise Development, Rural Towns and Basic Services when the programme opens in the county on October 3. Full details of the Leader Programme and its operation will be given to potential applicants and both Development Companies are encouraging people to attend. I REFER to correspondence form Ms Mary Griffin, CEO of the Nursing Board (NMBI), encouraging “inactive” nurses to return to work to meet the growing demands for nurses in the nursing home and elderly services sector (Killarney Advertiser 10/09/16). Of course, the chronic shortage of nurses stretches across all sectors and nursing disciplines, and I would like to recap on how this situation came about. From 2010 on the HSE reduced the subvention available which resulted in the reduction in student nurse placement available at regional collages. Then in 2013 the Government announced the “yellow pack” graduate nurse programme, which employed nurses on an 85% and 90% rate of full pay over two years, this resulted in a mass exodus of newly qualified nurses to Britain and worldwide for better wages and working conditions. Therefore, the current crisis was created directly by the shortsighted HSE and Government policies, with the Government is now attempting in vain to attract back the same nurses it chased away only a few years ago with additional incentives. Following a recent national dispute the PNA has achieved an increase in the intake of student mental health nurses going forward, that intake will increase from around 350 student in 2015 to around an annual intake of 480 student going forward. In 2016 Tralee IT the intake will increase from 15 to 20 training places for student mental health nurses. However, as it takes four years to train a nurse it will take until 2020 onwards for increased numbers of nurses to come on stream. In the meantime in Kerry we have a €8m, 40-bed longstay/rehabilitation/older persons mental health unit lying idle at St Margaret’s Road, Killarney, and a €2m, four-bed high observation /challenging behaviour unit lying idle at the Acute Admission Unit, KUH, Tralee. Community services remain largely based on a 9 to 5 five-day-week model, when services like suicide prevention and crisis intervention should be based on a 24/7 model in line with A Vision for Change. (2006) If we are ever to open these new but still idle facilities and expand community services in the county, we will need to substantial increase mental health nurse recruitment in Kerry. Given the current chronic shortages of mental health nurses, in the short term the only way to recruit nurses is to ask retired and inactive mental health nurses to return to work with the HSE in Kerry on a part time basis for a number of years. The Association has asked the HSE to set up a panel of retired and inactive nurses locally to enable the HSE to draw down staff when required to the various service areas in the county. Given the continuing high rate of unemployed and emigration from Ireland, it is rather sad that such poor planning and short sighted policies would have created this situation in the first place, a typical Irish own goal. However, going forward there are many opportunities in nursing including mental health nursing and I would ask Leaving Certificate students to consider it as a career and can assure them once qualified they will have a career and job for life wherever in the world they choose to work. The Provocateur TRAFFIC IS A THREAT TO KILLARNEY’S REPUTATION IT SEEMS like we are always moaning about the traffic problem in Killarney but seriously when is someone going to sit up and take notice? Just this week a leading Killarney hotelier and transport operator highlighted how tourists visiting other parts of Kerry are being warned to stay away from Killarney because of the traffic congestion and delays. Niall Huggard of the Lake Hotel Killarney and Phillip O’Callaghan of O’Callaghan Coaches are the latest to highlight the pressing issue. Mr Huggard said the Muckross Road traffic congestion has led to guests missing trains and spoke of how staff are also late for work because of the traffic. He also highlighted how emergency vehicles cannot access hotels and guesthouses along the road. This particular matter was previously highlighted by residents and hoteliers along the route at a Killarney Municipal District meeting last year. But nothing has happened since. Residents have again suggested a bypass be created from Muckross to Lissivigeen on the Killarney to Cork Road. It is time something was done. Killarney’s reputation is at stake here, apart from the hassle and delays locals and visitors alike face on this route.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + UNSUNG HEROES The tragic death of Irish Coast Guard volunteer Caitríona Lucas, who died while searching off the coast of Clare for a missing person, is a grim reminder of the often dangerous work volunteers undertake to make the world a better and safer place in which to live. Regardless of her own safety and welfare, Caitríona took to the open sea in conditions which were far from perfect doing what she loved to do, helping others. It’s at times like this that we are reminded of the vital and often very dangerous work volunteers in organisations like the Irish Coast Guard, Civil Defence, RNLI, Kerry Mountain Rescue and the many others whose contribution to our welfare and safety often goes above and beyond the call of duty,
unnoticed and unacknowledged and passes beneath the radar of public awareness until something goes wrong and we need them and they’re there for us, or something goes wrong and they pay the ultimate price. It’s at times like this when you try to list the many worthy organisations who volunteer on our behalf and you are afraid of offending anyone by not mentioning them that we realise how anonymous their contribution is, they’re certainly not there for the glory. Caitríona’s tragic death is a devastating blow to her colleagues and a cause of inexpressible grief to her family and friends and should remind us of those who give without counting the cost or seeking reward.

Iron Throne a royal attraction in the Kingdom GAME OF THRONES fans have been taking their seat on the Iron Throne in Kerry this week, bringing to life their visions of being a king, queen or khaleesi. Unlike Ned Stark, there was no need for them to lose their heads to achieve their dream of sitting on the iconic Iron Throne of the Kingdom of Westeros, as the Institute of Technology Tralee hosted the iconic seat on Wednesday and Thursday. On the epic Game of Thrones TV show, the Iron Throne was constructed by Aegon I Targaryen, the
first king of the Seven Kingdoms. He made it from the swords surrendered by his enemies. Legend has it, it’s made of a thousand swords that took 59 days to hammer out into a throne. Spikes and jagged edges in every direction make this one very intimidating lounge. Fancosmic’s HBO-licensed replica measures over 7’4” in height, 5’11” in depth and 5’5” in width. Also on display are HBO-licensed replicas the crown of Joffrey Baratheon and Jaime Lannister’s sword.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPLY AND DEMAND At the worst possible time, the Caribbean is running short of one of its most emblematic products. First-world consumers have never been keener on the coconut. Starbucks wants the tropical fruit’s milk for lattes, Rihanna promotes its water as a trendy sports drink, and the price of coconut oil has jumped more than 50 percent in the past year. The Caribbean is practically synonymous with the coconut, so its farmers should be cashing in. However, they aren’t. Storms, droughts and the Lethal Yellowing disease, spread by plant-hopping insects, have wiped out entire farms; growers have failed to invest in new trees, or fertilizers to improve yields. Caribbean plantations have shrunk by about 17 percent since 1994, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization. “It’s fair to say that at this pace, the Caribbean is running out of coconuts,” said Compton Paul, coordinator of a regional coconut program at the Trinidad-based Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute. In Nagua on the Dominican Republic’s north coast, production has dropped by about 60 percent in two decades, according to the local association of growers. Quantity isn’t the only issue: many of the nuts that do get harvested aren’t up to scratch. If you don’t hear the sound of milk sloshing about when you shake a coconut, it gets dumped on a growing pile of discards, which were picked too early. It’s a problem that nobody saw coming. Two decades ago, international demand was waning amid medical warnings that tropical oils could raise levels of arteryclogging cholesterol. Coconuts sold for
next to nothing in the Caribbean, where they’ve grown for five centuries since being introduced by Europeans travelling from the Indian Ocean. Often, they were just left to rot on their trees. Today, coconut milk is being sold as a healthier alternative to cow’s milk, and it’s a staple of recipes in many cookbooks. Even the fruit’s husks turn out to be useful, filling car-seat cushions. And most sought-after of all is the coconut’s water, rich in potassium and other electrolytes. It’s on track to become a $4 billion industry by 2019, according to Technavio, a research company. All Market Inc., the industry pioneer which began selling leading brand Vita Coco in 2004, now cracks about 1.6 million nuts a day, and can claim Rihanna and actor Matthew McConaughey among its celebrity investors. The company estimates that the U.S. market alone is already worth $1.2 billion. Other countries are stepping in to meet demand. Worldwide, farmers have increased the amount of land planted with coconuts by 14 percent since 1994, according to the UN. Indonesia, the Philippines and India are the top producers. Typically, green coconuts for water have been so plentiful and cheap that any thirsty islander might buy one on the street corner, from a machete-wielding salesman who’d lop off the top and insert a straw. They still do, but prices are rising, while grocery shelves are filling up with thinned-out or even fake versions. Trinidad and Tobago’s Health Ministry in May confiscated bottles labelled as coconut water from stores, saying they contained only water and chemicals.
Teen sues parents over embarrassing Facebook photos AN AUSTRIAN teen has taken a rather extreme course of action over her baby photos being posted to Facebook. An 18-year-old woman, who has not been named under Austrian privacy laws, said that the photos were embarrassing and a violation of her privacy. Speaking to Austria’s Heute newspaper, she said, “They knew no shame and no limits. “They didn’t care if I was sitting on the toilet or lying naked in the cot, every moment was photographed and made public,” she added. She did try to talk to her parents about the photos; she said that she repeatedly asked them to remove around 500 photos of her from the social network, but they refused. As soon as she turned 18, she decided to go down the legal route. Her father told Die Ganze Woche that he saw no reason to take the photos down. “I see it as my right to publish these pictures,” he said. “After all it’s our children and, for my wife and myself; it’s a nice family album that goes down well with our Facebook friends.” The photos were posted online seven years ago when she was 11. She discovered the pictures chronicling her life when she joined the social network three years later.

Killarney Credit Union unveils new loans for small and agri businesses
“In order to retain our competiveness and ensure Killarney remains a world-class visitor destination and a leader in the tourism industry we must lead the way in accessible and responsible tourism, we are currently rolling out a three year accessibility plan and our mission is to create a welcoming environment for all” said Patrick O’Donoghue, managing director of The Gleneagle Group. “Our location is one of extreme natural beauty, it is a safe visitor destination and is largely free of pollution, it is therefore a wonderful visitor destination for people affected by health issues or accessibility challenges. Many of the visitor attractions in the area have made great strides in their accessibility plans, but these visitor attractions must also be complemented with The shortlist was selected by a meeting of the jury of industry experts at Fáilte Ireland’s offices in Dublin last week and the overall winners will be announced at the 2016 Irish Responsible Tourism Conference on Thursday, October 6, at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Dublin.

Local Property Tax to remain unchanged in Kerry KERRY COUNTY COUNCILLORS have voted to retain the Local Property Tax at its current rate. There will be no variation on the rate for 2017 following a vote. A proposal by Sinn Féin to have the LPT reduced by 15% was defeated by twenty-four votes to six with three absent. Under legislation the local authority has the power to increase or decrease the local property tax rate by 15%. Earlier, councillors were told there is a €5.5 million shortfall in the council’s finances for the coming year. The chief executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, said this is a serious gap that will have to be bridged. A car parking strategy is to be considered to help boost funds. The property tax will be worth €3.7 million to the local authority in 2017; it will be used for housing, roads, libraries, park and public lighting.

Meeke and Breen in for Corsica KRIS MEEKE and co-driver Paul Nagle and Craig Breen and co-driver Scott Martin have been announced as the PH Sport Citroen team's drivers for next month's Tour of Corsica. The pairings, who both finished on the Rally Finland podium with Meeke winning and Breen bringing his DS 3 WRC home third, have already completed their pre-event test in Italy. Corsica is understood to have always been part of the French team's plans and Breen was confirmed in one car as long ago as June. Meeke and Nagle have only contested four rounds of the World championship this season - they has led all of them and won in Portugal and Finland – while he concentrates on the development of Citroen's new C3 car for 2017. They were due to return for Rally China but it has been cancelled due to the recent flooding which damaged many of the roads to be used on the event. There is now a gap until the French round in Corsica at the end of September, followed a fortnight later by Spain, and then Rally GB in late October. Rally GB is not planned for Meeke and Nagle but Meeke has told the team he wants to be there, feeling that the gap between Corsica and the opening round of 2017 in Monte Carlo in January is too long to be away from competitive action. Meek and Nagle have a full WRC program with the return Citroen factory team for 2017.

Dieselgate train is not stopping.... SEPTEMBER 18, 2015, the Dieselgate emissions scandal emerged. After almost a year after everything went south for the German manufacturer, investors have decided to sue the holding company that controls VW. As it was expected from such a massive scandal, investors aren’t happy at all with the losses they’ve sustained over the turbulent period that has passed since the wrongdoing came to light. It is reported that the holding company Porsche SE is being sued by the investors for not divulging the financial risks of the emissions scandal. Law firm Nieding + Barth has filed a dozen lawsuits up to this moment in time, all of them against Porsche SE. Three more suits were submitted by Andreas Tilp, a lawyer who has represented numerous other investors over disclosures in the hard-knock world of the capital market. Naturally, this follow-up doesn’t bode well for the holding company that controls 52.2% of the Volkswagen Group’s voting shares. While shareholders don’t active-
ly manage a corporation, shareholders appoint the board of directors to oversee the operating business. The people who make decisions in the Volkswagen Group were handpicked by Porsche SE, which is controlled by the Piech and Porsche families. Other than this falling out between shareholders and Porsche SE, the holding company and VW further face 80 lawsuits at the regional court in Stuttgart. Close to its first anniversary, the scandal is far off from its conclusion.

Business leader sounds warning on increased parking charges A HIKE in parking charges could affect Killarney’s economy negatively, it has been claimed. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Kate O’Leary warned increased parking charges could be detrimental to the county and could be off-putting to visitors. A DEPUTATION was received at Wednesday’s meeting of the Killarney Municipal Area regarding the proposed link road between Lissivigeen and Castlelough, Muckross, requested by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae. This link road was originally proposed as part of the bypass infrastructure programme from Muckross to Lissivigeen to Kilcummin to Farranfore. “Given the severe traffic congestion on the Muckross Rd which is impacting Killarney town, I and the deputation outlined how vital that the link road is for the residents, business people and visitors to Killarney,” said Councillor Healy-Rae.

PETS/ANIMALS ANIMALS HUG: Homes for Unwanted
Greyhounds (CHY 19414), formerly Kerry Greyhound Connection, takes in, rehabilitates and finds homes for unwanted racing greyhounds. We are looking for people to help us by offering a foster home for a greyhound as a ‘half-way-home’ until we can find a permanent home for the dog. Fostering is a really valuable and ‘hands on’ way to be involved in greyhound rescue work. There is no cost to fosterers as HUG will cover all food and veterinary expenses. Please get in touch if you’d like to help. For further details please contact us on 087 9822695 or email homesforunwantedgreyhounds@eircom.net. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART
The moment that you died Our hearts were torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you. Remembering you as our friend is easy, We do it everyday, But missing you is the heartache, That never goes away.
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. L.M.

Brosnan
Birthday remembrance of Dan Brosnan whose birthday occurred on the 4th of September and Mary Brosnan whose birthday occurred on the 14th of September, both late of Rockfield Faha. If tears could wash away our pain, We would not feel such hurt again. The heartbreak left since you’ve been gone, We wouldn’t wish on anyone. But today is your birthday, So we’ll have to be so brave, And accept that God has taken, What first to us he gave. Loved and remembered always by Gerard, TJ, Junior, Bridie and all the Brosnan family.
Birthday Remembrance Brosnan
In loving memory of Michael O’Donoghue, Farmyard, Ross Road, Killarney who died on 20th September 2014. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. If tears could build a stairway, And heartaches build a lane, We’d walk our way to heaven, And bring you back again. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one could ever fill.
27th & 50th Birthday Remembrance
Thinking every day of Cornelius, our dear brother, late of “Irish Cottage” Muckross Road Killarney, beloved son of the late Cathy and Cornelius Guerin, who very sadly and too young, left us on 22th of September 2014. Benedictus by John O’Donohue (1956 - 2008) For Cornelius On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets in to you, may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green, and azure blue come to awaken in you a meadow of delight. When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and a stain of ocean blackens beneath you, may there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home. May the nourishment of the earth be yours, may the clarity of light be yours, may the fluency of the ocean be yours, may the protection of the ancestors be yours. And so may a slow wind work these words of love around you, an invisible cloak to mind your life.
In loving memory of Mary Brosnan late of Rockfield Faha Killarney whose birthday remembrance falls on the 14th of September 2016. Missing you Mary on this your birthday. Don’t cry for me now I have died, for I’m still here I’m by your side, My body’s gone but my soul is here, please don’t shed another tear, I am still here I’m all around, only my body lies in the ground. I am a snowflake that kisses your nose, I am the frost that nips your toes. I am the sun, bringing you light, I am the star, shining so bright. I am the rain, refreshing the earth, I am the laughter, I am the mirth. I am the bird, up in the sky, I am the cloud, that’s drifting by. I am the thoughts, inside your heard, While I’m still there, I can’t be dead.
Gone are the days we used to share But in our hearts you are always there Never more than a thought away Loved and remembered every day. Sadly missed by Brian & Eileen.

In loving memory of Stephen O’Connor late of Alohert, Beaufort who passed away on the 12th of September 2015.
Our lives go on without you But nothing is the same We have to hide our heartache When someone speaks your name.
You always had a smile to share Time to give and time to care A loving nature, a heart of gold One of the best this world could hold Never selfish, always kind These are the memories you left behind.
You did so many things for us Your heart was so kind and true And when we needed someone We could always count of you. The special years will not return When we are all together But with the love in our hearts You walk with us forever.

WORLD UNIVERSITY ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS Congratulations to UCD and former Muckross rower Aileen Crowley who raced for Ireland at the World University Championships recently in Poznan, Poland. Aileen was part of the Irish Womens Four crew who placed second in the B final to finish eighth overall – a great achievement. Well done Aileen! Aileen was joined by Aoife Feeley (UCC), Siofra
Bennet (UCD) and Eimear Lambe (UCD and sister of Rio Olympian Claire Lambe). We also congratulate Killorglin and IT Tralee rower Monika Dukarska who scooped a bronze medal for Ireland in the Womens Scull. It was with great sadness that the club learned of the passing of Limerick native Ailish Sheehan, who suffered fatal injury in a fall following her participation in the World University Championship Regatta. Ailish was a talented rower who was celebrating her bronze medal win for the University of London as part of Team GB. Among her many honours, Ailish had previously won a Senior Irish Championship title in 2013 with St. Michael’s Rowing Club of Limerick when she partnered with Rio Olympian Sinead Jennings. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and all who knew her. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Fergus O’Donoghue and his wife Joanne on the birth of their new baby girl. We wish the happy family every health and success.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s
Club Captain Liam Hartnett in partnership with Club head Professional David Keating represented the Club in the annual Professional/Captain challenge competition which was played at Luttrelstown on Friday 9th of September. The competition is open to all Golf Clubs in Ireland and was played in a fourball/betterball format, and was won by Mannan Castle Golf Club with an outstanding score of 8 under par. Killarney finished in the top twenty with a very creditable score of level par and it was notable for being the first occasion since last year, that David Keating played a full 18 holes of golf since he endured horrific burns to his hand and which had kept him out of the game completely in the meantime. The Men’s Club Foursomes final was played on the 10th of September and by all accounts was a game of the very highest standard from a scoring perspective. The finalists were George Vass and Michael O’Donoghue (Countess Road) vs Dermot Roche and John Hickey. Dermot and John were two up after 8 holes before George and Michael hit a “purple patch” and they were 1 under par for the last 8 holes played before finishing the match on the 16th green on Killeen with a closing birdie. George and Michael were only two over par overall for the sixteen holes played, which was really excellent golf. The tournament for our Club Seniors was played on Mahony’s Point on the 8th of September, and despite being played in very testing winds and rain the scoring was absolutely fantastic. Tim O’Shea in his speech when presenting the prizes said that the scoring totally belied the
weather conditions. Results were as follows: 1st Peter Lawlor 45 points, won on the back nine from 2nd Denis Murphy 45 points 3rd Enda Curtayne 44 points 4th Dan Moynihan 43 points 5th Joe Scally 42 points Front nine John Moynihan Back nine Liam Chute Best over 70s Dermot Doyle 40 points. There was a record turnout of 53 competitors which is a testament to the popularity of this particular competition. Sunday the 11th September the Back Stakes Classic which is a stroke competition played on Mahony’s Point. 1st Conor Healy (10) 68 2nd Tom Sugrue (9) 71 3rd George Vass (5) 72 4th Sean Devane (16) 72 5th Pat Cussen (6) 72 Best gross Simon Gallivan (1) 73 Category 2 Declan Kelly (9) 75 Category 3 Liam Healy (12) 72 Category 4 Ciaran Fleming (28) 73 Standard scratch was 74.
Killarney Men’s Shed
Boat Trip A group of Killarney “shedders” took to the water recently under the stewardship of the infamous Charlie Fleming who is a renowned boatman and author of many good stories. The first stop was Inisfallen Island. This was a first for some of the group, but another member Mike O’Connor and expert on nature was on hand to provide expert knowledge on the bio-diversity on the island. After a relaxing time there, the group went on to Dinis for a while before finally docking at Glena Cottage. While the day started off in beautiful sunshine, the weather turned bad, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the group. In high spirits and wet clothes, the men made their way to Glena cottage to dry off a little and cook some well-earned food. The main lesson to be learned there was to ensure to bring a lighter as the task of getting a fire going proved somewhat difficult to say the least. This was a very eventful outing and those involved and many more can’t wait for the next trip which is just on the horizon. “Killarney Men’s Shed” provides a friendly and homely welcome to men of all ages and is open every week day for anyone who may have a few hours to spare and is located on Upper Lewis Road.

It was 0-0 at half-time but Celtic were the better side and really proved it in a thrilling second half. Supersub Cathal O’Shea came off the bench to hit the net twice, with Matt Keane, Padraig O’Connor, and Pa McGrath also on target as the hard work and enthusiasm shown in training sessions really paid off. Denny Premier B: Skeliga 4 Killarney Celtic B1 We played excellently in the first half and should maybe have put away a bit more than Stephen McCarthy’s superb goal, but it got harder as Skeliga really lifted their game in the second half and deservedly won out. Kerry minors bid for three-in-a row All Ireland Eamonn Fitzgerald previews this Sunday’s All-Ireland Minor Football Final WITH the Kerry seniors out of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the interest of local supporters switches to the minor footballers, who will chase that elusive three-in-a-row All-Ireland Minor Football Championship at Croke Park on Sunday next. This will be the curtain-raiser to the senior final between Dublin and Mayo. Fortunes have changed for the county minors when one recalls that barren spell that went back to 1994 until Jack O’Connor broke the deadlock in 2014. Kerry has been impressive in all of their games against Waterford, Clare, Cork, Derry and more recently versus Kildare. The big win over Kildare installs
Kerry as hot favourites for Sunday’s final. I put this to team manager Peter Keane when I met him. “Yes, we were impressive in the semi-final, but we are up against a topclass Galway team in this final. They have a lethal forward division, all six of them,” he said. “Murphy at centre forward is particularly dangerous as are his flankers, Forde and Lee. They also have Finnerty, Conneely and Goldrick and this trio pose a great threat.” Will the Kerry defence be able to clamp down on Galway? They did not concede any goals to Kildare, but did give away goals on all the other matches on the road to Croker. Niall Collins and Danny O Brien

Management were delighted with all players efforts during the two games. Kerry South U15 played Galway in Lewis Road on Saturday. Thirty players lined out with all players gaining valuable inter county experience during the day. Management observed great improvements by all the players with excellent teamwork in evidence. Thanks to Fossa and Dr Crokes clubs for the use of their excellent facilities, it was much appreciated by all concerned in organising the days event.
U14s: On Friday 16th Currow u14s will conclude their season when they play Ballymac in the Castleisland District League A final. U12s: On Saturday last Castleisland Desmonds was the venue for Currow’s District League final where the opponents were Scartaglen. In a very close contest Currow had the upper hand on their opponents and proved victorious on a score line of Currow 5-13 to Scartaglin’s 4-15. The following day Currow played host to Beaufort in the East Kerry League. Beaufort proved to have the better of the two half’s and went on to win on a score line of Currow 4-09 to Beauforts 5-10. U10s: The Castleisland District u10 annual blitz will take place on Saturday morning in Cordal at 10:30am. U6s, U8s: Training will continue on Saturday morning at 10am.

U6, U8 & U10 BOYS Our Saturday morning football training academy went on tour on Sunday, 11th September to John Mitchels, Tralee. There was great excitement for this much anticipated match and all cohorts performed incredibly well in a windswept John Mitchels GAA pitch. Many thanks to all the boys, their parents/guardians and coaches/ mentors who travelled to support the budding stars. Training resumes as per normal schedule on Saturday, 17th September. U12 Boys Well done to our U12 boys who were also playing on Sunday, 11th September. Conditions were blustery to say the least, but the Firies troopers had a convincing victory against Spa GAA in Killarney; Spa 1-06 Firies 5-15. Well done boys.

from Glenflesk, centre men in the Kerry defence will have to be extra vigilant. I was impressed with corner back David Naughton, who has grown in confidence in this year’s campaign. Both Kerry and Galway play the traditional 15 men in their own areas of play and we must be very tight on Sunday; they must work hard to back each other up. “These are things we have worked at in training and we have no injury problems going in to this game,” said manager Peter Keane.. Sean O’Shea from Kenmare was on last year’s team and he said that to win the three in a row all fifteen must work very hard to gain possession. “All the lads on the team have been doing this . We must continue to do this all over the field and all of us must be prepared to fight for the dirty ball and set us up for scores,” he said.
The team has not been announced as we go to press, but I do not foresee any changes from the Kildare game. On that occasion there were no less that nine players from the local East Kerry Board as follows, Billy Courtney, David Naughton, Michael Potts and David Shaw all from Dr Crokes, Mark Ryan and Brian Friel from Rathmore, Daniel O’Brien from Glenflesk, Dara Moynihan from Spa and David Clifford from Fossa. When I pointed this out to Peter Keane he said: Yes, underage football is very strong in this board area and they have all proved their worth”. I have been impressed by this Kerry team and I expect them to lift the trophy on Sunday. It has the makings of a great game and I am looking forward to see how they can bring home the silver.”

Fixtures Gneeveguilla seniors will play Annascual on September 25th in promotion playoff with the winner to play St Pats. Well done to Gneeveguilla Juniors for making it to a fifth McElligott cup final in a row. O’Donoghue Cup Gneeveguilla played Firies in Round 1 of the O’Donoghue Cup on Sunday. A point just before half time left Gneeveguilla leading 3-03 to 0-05 at half time. It took 13 minutes for Gneeveguilla to take advantage of the strong breeze in the second half as Shane O’Sullivan Padraig Doyle, Connie O’Connor and Corneilus Buckley rattled off 4 more points. Danny O’Connor got Gneeveguilla’s fourth goal when he followed through on a high ball and rose highest in the box to put the game beyond doubt. A Micheal Brosnan point followed up by one more from Shane O’Sullivan and Padraig Doyle sealed the victory as referee Tom Moriarty blew the final whistle. Gneeveguilla now go on to face the winners of Kilcummin and Glenflesk in the next round.
from Cork. Under 14 Girls Both ourselves and opponents Glenflesk served up a very entertaining game for the supporters who braved the miserable conditions at Lewis Road on Sunday evening 11th September. After a lacklustre showing by our girls in the first half, despite playing with the elements, they drove into their opponents and the conditions in the second period. The concession of two first half goals ultimately proved our undoing but it took 3 points in the last five minutes by the visitors to provide the winning margin.
