Killarney’s whiskey business to create 15 jobs A NEW attraction in Killarney town centre, the Irish Whiskey Experience and Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder on New Street, will be open in mid-March, in time for St Patrick’s Day. Ally Alpine of the Celtic Whiskey Shop signed the lease on the premises late last year and work is taking place on the former Jade’s Sports Bar, where the team will include manager Ann McEnery, assistant manager Maura Crowley and bar man Padraig Sweeney. The new business will be a welcome boost for local employment with the creation of 15 jobs and is expected to attract even more tourism to the area. Killarney Advertiser had a sneak preview of what will be on offer at the new franchise at the launch, by Minister for Diaspora Affairs Jimmy Deenihan, on Monday. The 2,000 square foot (186 square metre) venue will house the Irish Whiskey Experience to the front of the building where a series of masterclasses, workshops and tasting events will take place daily. “This will be a sensory and interactive experience that will guide visitors through the distilling process from the raw ingredients through to tasting the whiskey,” said Ann McEnery. The lane at the side of the building will lead to the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder. This will stock an extensive range of craft beers, spirits, quality wines and a vast selection of Irish, Scottish and international whiskeys. Locally sourced fresh produce will also be served throughout the day. Mr Alpine has over 25 years of experience in the drinks and whiskey trade and is considered an innovative industry leader. He opened the Celtic WhisPadraig Sweeney, Minister Jimmy Deenihan, Maura Crowley, assistant manager, Ann key Shop on Dawson Street in the heart of Dublin City Centre in June 2003. ANTIQUES, ART AND VINTAGE FAIR IN KILLARNEY DO YOU love watching the likes of Antiques Road Show, Cash in the Attic, or Deal or No Deal? If so, head for The Dromhall Hotel this Sunday, January 24, from 11am to 6pm where the Kerry Antiques, Art & Vintage Fair takes place. Celebrating its 26th year this Sunday, the hugely popular event is held twice yearly. Please note this fair normally runs in Fels Point Hotel, Tralee, but due to refurbishment the fair will go ahead in the Killarney venue The Dromhall Hotel instead. “To celebrate our 26th year the emphasis will be on furniture and we will have several new dealers in attendance,” said a spokesperson. Try to imagine 20 antique shops, art galleries and vintage shops all in one place together, and then you start to get the picture. Some of the dealers in attendance are members of Irish Antique Dealers Association (IADA). “The Kerry area is highly recognised as one of Ireland’s top antique spots and has held this position for the last 26 years since its first fair in the Great Southern Hotel,” added the spokesperson. “People from Killarney, Tralee and Listowel have always enjoyed and attended this fair in their droves. Because of the huge attendances down through the 26 years the fair has gone from strength to strength. Ever year we find ourselves turning dealers down because we have a full house, every time.” You can expect to see in excess of a quarter of a million items; as long as it is old or collectible then it will be here. Don’t forget entry for adults including raffle is €3.50 and children are free. An admission discount voucher is available on robinodon@ gmail.com
Editor’s View KILLARNEY’S a wonderful town for community spirit and it was to the fore in earnest this week. As you leaf through your copy of this week’s edition, you’ll see just what I mean. A sense of camaraderie was very much in evidence at Killarney Golf Club on Saturday morning. Almost double the turnout expected descended on the course bright and early for its post-flood clean-up. Rakes at the ready, the willing volunteers ensured the work was done in double-quick time. The memory of the late Vivien O’Shea was honoured in a touching ceremony at Killarney Community College on Monday as the popular staff member was commemorated with a circular bench designed by her family, husband Mike and daughters Marion and Elizabeth. Election fever was hotting up in The Gleneagle this week as candidates and community representatives gathered to have their say in a special Newstalk broadcast. Last but not least, Killarney’s business community is always glad to see new kids on the block. Work is well underway on New Street on ensuring the Irish Whiskey Experience and Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder will be open by St Patrick’s Day. Question I heard that the minimum wage has increased to €9.15 an hour. My employer says that this only applies to adults and that, as I am under 18, he won’t be increasing my hourly rate of pay. Is that right? Answer No. Since 1 January 2016, the statutory minimum wage for an experienced adult has increased to €9.15 per hour. Under the National Minimum Wage Act 2000, there are also pro-rata increases for those aged under 18 and for trainees. The new rates are as follows:

If your employer is not paying you the appropriate minimum wage, you can make a complaint to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) using the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie. In the complaint form you have two options. You may either request an inspector from the WRC to investigate a claim that the national minimum wage is not being paid or you may refer a dispute to a WRC adjudicator. However, you can only refer a dispute if you have requested a statement from your employer outlining the calculation of the average hourly pay. You can get more information on the minimum wage and your employment rights from the WRC Information and Customer Service (Lo-call 1890 80 80 90 or workplacerelations.ie) or from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Kerry musicians strike a chord SINGERS and musicians from Kerry will be unveiling two CDs at the end of the month. The launch of Home: Songs by Sarah Finnan and Lorraine Nash, and Air is Still: Songs by Kerry Students, will be launched by the cathaoirleach of Kerry, Cllr Pat McCarthy, at the Kerry Diocesan Youth Centre in Killarney on January 30 at 2pm. All are welcome to the launch of the two CDs, which are the result of two separate projects, both overseen by Kevin Gleeson, former Kerry County Council composer-in-residence, and co-funded by the Arts Council. Home: Songs by Sarah Finnan and Lorraine Nash is the result of mentoring sessions that Kevin gave to two talented Kerry musicians, Lorraine Nash and Sarah Finnan. These sessions were generously hosted by the KDYS in Killarney and have been funded by Kerry County Council and the Arts Council of Ireland. The other CD, Air is Still: Songs by Kerry Students is the result of work that Kevin did with students in schools around the county as part of his residency. “It was an amazing opportunity to work with Lorraine and Sarah,” said Kevin. “Both are incredibly talented musicians and songwriters and they pair showed immense enthusiasm throughout the mentorship. Both have huge potential as artists and I hope the experience they have gained through this mentorship as well as the industry standard recordings that were produced will give them a great start in their musical careers.” The mentoring sessions were held over three Saturdays in the KDYS, Killarney, which was turned into a mini-recording studio by Kevin.

Boost your fitness at Killarney Community College WHETHER you like to leap around or would prefer to get fit from the comfort of your chair, the adult education programme at Killarney Community College offers numerous fitness-boosting classes this term! One that really caught our eye was the senior chair Pilates class. “It is a wonderful way to introduce exercise, if you haven’t much experience in doing fitness classes!” said a spokeswoman. “Also if you have recently recovered from an injury, and you are not sure about your strength, mobility and flexibility, this is a good workout for you.” Pilates on chairs involves lots of stretches, mobility exercises, body awareness technique, fun and relaxation. The classes take place on Tuesdays for seven weeks, 8pm-9pm, €50. Zumba fitness is an effective workout system that combines Latin dance rhythms and dance moves that provides an excellent group exercise experience for everyone. “It’s an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party. Zumba provides accessible fitness, without the strain, without the sacrifice, just the pure joy of a party,” added the spokeswoman. Zumba classes commence on Thursday, January 28, for seven weeks, 6.45pm to 7.45pm; €50. Meanwhile, Pilates is an exercise system that helps both men and women to develop core strength and spinal mobility. Good core strength is essential for stabilising your torso, it relieves pressure on your back, so that your body can move freely and efficiently. Classes will take place on Tuesdays, for seven weeks, 6.45pm-7.45pm; €50.

A NUMBER of traffic concerns in the Rathmore and Barraduff area will be raised at the meeting of Killarney Municipal District on February 10. Councillor John Sheahan will ask Kerry County Council as to when a pedestrian crossing will be provided at Rathmore town centre, adjacent to the community centre. He is also asking Kerry County Council to resurface the road at Station Road, Rathmore. “This is a health and safety issue as there are many deep potholes on this stretch of road,” said Cllr Sheahan. “I am also asking this council to resurface the road from Clounts Cross to Ballinahulla as it’s a danger to all road users.” Cllr Sheahan is also asking the council to provide a footpath adjacent to the primary school in Barraduff as soon as possible.

Community college dedicates bench to the memory of Vivien VIVIEN O’SHEA’S warm personality as well as her love of daffodils and the colour purple were remembered by her family, friends, colleagues and students at Killarney Community College on Monday evening. A circular bench surrounding a tree – which is already proving hugely popular with staff and students at the school – was officially dedicated to the Killarney teacher’s memory. “When we think of Vivien we think of her smile, her laughter, her love of daffodils and the colour purple. These were all part of her bubbly and energetic personality,” said school principal Fiona O’Brien. “We are here also to thank her husband Mike and daughters Marion and Elizabeth for their help in designing this school bench and tree in remembrance of Vivien.” Vivien’s elder daughter Marion read andextract from William Wordsworth’s poem Daffodils and her younger daughter Elizabeth cut the ribbon (purple, of course!) on the bench. Fr Niall Howard then blessed the bench and tree in memory of Vivien. Transition-year student Robyn Sheehan thanked the O’Shea family for their generous gift to the school of the bench and tree. “It is already a central point of activity for students during break and lunch,” she said. Student Lorraine Cosgrave gave the closing thoughts, in a piece entitled “In memory of Vivien”. The bench was jointly funded by the O’Shea family and the students council.

Election candidates on the airwaves from Killarney THERE was an electric pre-election atmosphere in The Gleneagle Hotel from midday onwards on Monday as a number of Kerry’s General Election candidates as well as various community representatives and members of the public made their way to the venue for Newstalk’s lunchtime broadcast. An audience gathered from well before the broadcast, keen to quiz candidates on local issues. Topics covered during the lively discussion included job creation, fishing policies, roads, and the post office network. All candidates were invited to participate but prior commitments meant some were unable to attend. The candidates who took part were Minister Jimmy Deenihan (Fine Gael), Deputy Arthur Spring (Labour), Deputy Martin Ferris (Sinn Fein), Deputy Michael Healy-Rae (Independent), Cllr Norma Moriarty (Fianna Fail), Michael Fitzgerald (Green Party), Brian Finucane (People Before Profit), Kevin Murphy (Independent), and Cllr John Brassil (Fianna Fail). Good weekend for Killarney youth rugby IT WAS a good weekend for both the under-16 and under-18 players from Killarney. The Killarney/Castleisland under-18 amalgamation played Thurles in the under-18 plate competition in Castleisland. In a closely fought game the amalgamation overcame their opposition with a late try to win 14 points to 8. Killarney hosted Listowel, in Aghadoe, to win in a thrilling game 39-38. As is customary with this side they conceded an unconverted try within the first six minutes; however with this ding-dong affair the sides were level 19 all at half time. Killarney resumed the game with a great sense of purpose to lead 31-19 with about 15 to go. Perhaps this looked like it was going to be a runaway win for Killarney because they let Listowel back into the game to draw things level 31 all with six minutes to go. Killarney looked like they had just done enough when Kieran O'Connor converted a difficult penalty under great pressure. The score was 34-31 but Listowel scored under the posts to lead 38-34 from the restart. Killarney were awarded a series of penalties to bring them to Listowel's five-metre line, and from a fantastic lineout ruck, went left then right for Barry Slattery to score in the corner from the last play. This team has transformed itself from last September. Other try scorers were Callum Meyers, Krystian Kamosa, Sean Cahill and Christopher Carey.

‘Roaming deer are creating traffic hazard a Ballydowney’ DEER roaming onto the road at Ballydowney, Killarney, are creating a serious traffic hazard, locals have warned. Senator Marie Moloney raised the issue of deer roaming onto the road at Ballydowney and causing accidents and even deaths. Speaking in the Seanad, she said: “There is a stretch of road at Ballydowney, where there is no ditch or fence and deer are free to roam. This has been the site of many accidents including three fatalities.” The Gardai in Killarney confirmed that they receive between 70 and 100 calls a year about roaming deer, added Senator Moloney. “The Minister will appreciate that if a farmer had livestock he would have to have a fence to stop them wan- Senator Marie Moloney. dering onto the road, where an accident could happen,” she added. While the deer are a vital element in drawing visitor numbers to Killarney, they must also be controlled in the interest of safety for motorcyclists, pedestrians or cars, either by a ditch or a fence, according to Senator Moloney. “Previously, there was a wall at this point, but now the deer are free to roam. More warning signs need to be erected, with a higher impact, and at more prominent locations.” In a reply delivered on behalf of Minister Heather Humphreys, she stated that the erection of a fence on this scale could impact on the sensitive habitats within the Park. She said that improved sight lines in the area will benefit the motorist and additional or relocated signs or both may also be provided. The Minister also stated that she will try to ensure that the issues raised in the debate are addressed in the interest of protecting motorists at Ballydowney. Senator Moloney said "The wildlife in this country is protected under the Wildlife Acts, but who protects the people?"

Time to mix it up to enjoy classic brands UP UNTIL quite recently if you wanted a gin in Ireland your choices were fairly limited. Cork Dry Gin was the perfectly acceptable benchmark. Gordans was seen as a step up and Bombay Sapphire was accounted luxurious. And, of course, had a price to match. Today there is a movement, mimicking the USA and the UK, towards higher quality and more specialised gins. Hendricks (€44.99), for example, is a

I’m Travelling Alone By Samuel Bjork
WHEN a six-year-old girl is found dead, hanging from a tree, the only clue the Oslo Police have to work with is an airline tag around her neck. It reads “I’m travelling alone”. Holger Munch, veteran police investigator, is immediately charged with re-assembling his homicide unit. But to complete the team, he must convince his erstwhile partner, Mia Krüger – a brilliant but troubled investigator – to return from the solitary island where she has retreated with plans to take her own life.
Reviewing the evidence, Mia identifies something no one else has noticed – a thin line carved into the dead girl’s fingernail: the number 1. Instinctively, she knows that this is only the beginning. To save other children from the same fate, she must find a way to cast aside her own demons and confront the most terrifying, cold-hearted serial killer of her career… I’m Travelling Alone is priced at €17.99 and is part of Eason Killarney’s new Buy One Get One Half Price offer.

LUKE 1:1-4, 4:14-21: Jesus was filled with the Spirit and sent. He came bursting with a message to communicate. When have you had the experience of being enthused by something in that way? Who have been the people you met who had that kind of enthusiasm? The message Jesus had was one of liberation and he told his listeners that it was being fulfilled even as they listened. When have you had a now moment of liberation? When has Bible reading been an experience of liberation for you? His message was addressed to those who were poor, oppressed, blind or captives. IN THIS Week of Christian Unity we remember Pope John Paul II’s words: “Dialogue cannot take place merely on a horizontal level, being restricted to meetings, exchanges of points of view, or even the sharing of gifts proper to each Community. It has also primarily a vertical thrust, directed towards the One who, as Redeemer of the world and the Lord of history is, himself, our Reconciliation. This vertical aspect of dialogue lies in our acknowledgment, jointly, and to each other, that we have sinned. It is precisely this acknowledgment which creates ... that interior space where Christ ... can effectively act with all the power of his spirit, the Paraclete.” Salvador Ryan
ARE YOU FULFILLING SCRIPTURE?
THE prologue to the Gospel of Luke is almost like the opening credits of a major blockbuster movie, there’s something exciting about it. We don’t really know who Theophilus was, possibly a patron of Luke’s, but his name also means “lover of God” and in that sense this Gospel is addressed to all “lovers of God”. In the synagogue, Jesus is handed the scroll from Isaiah. It is one of the most powerful passages in the New Testament as Jesus sets out his mission, his manifesto. The uncomfortable truths contained within the passage cause the crowd to reject him. We know that in our world today good news has still to reach the afflicted, captives still await liberation, the oppressed are not free. So this is not a passage read in the past, it is very much alive, very much a vision for all to have and to work towards. Just as the scriptures are fulfilled in Jesus, they are also fulfilled in each of our lives. There are many causes we can be involved in, refugees, climate justice, homelessness, neighbourliness, community involvement. Wherever we are, in our own small ways, we can strive to make this dream a reality. In the words of Sheila Cassidy: “Lord of the universe, look in love upon your people. Pour the healing oil of your compassion on a world that is wounded and dying. Send us out in search of the lost, to comfort the afflicted, to bind up the broken, and to free those trapped under the rubble of their fallen dream.” Jane Mellett

Golf club volunteers on a par with the best EXCHANGING their drivers for shovels and rakes, members of Killarney Golf Club displayed a can-do attitude as they teed off for action in a massive post-flooding clean-up last Saturday morning. Camaraderie at its best was vey much to the fore. Rakes at the ready, nearly 90 volunteers swung into action – double the number expected and completing the work two hours earlier than anticipated. Members of other Kerry golf clubs, including 13 from Dooks, also joined the action with gusto. General manager Cormac Flannery, course manager Enda Murphy, club captain Liam Hartnett and lady captain Mary O’Rourke were all delighted with the extraordinary efforts of the meitheal. Enda Murphy and his course maintenance crew were first to arrive at the maintenance sheds before the main throng began arriving at 8am and the first contingent were deployed to the first fairway on Killeen by 8.15am. “It was just amazing, a joy to behold,” said club captain Liam Hartnett. A warm welcome awaited all back at the clubhouse with soup and sandwiches served as well as a glass of hot Irish whiskey or hot port. Club president Arthur Hanley remarked that “the good Lord had shone down upon us”, by providing the pleasant weather. Cormac Flannery said the work had made a huge difference and predicted that the Mahony’s Point course would be fully operational by the end of January, and that the Killeen course should be opened by early March.

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is hosting its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition. Here Jill Duggan explains how toning tables can help you streamline your body
FAST INCH LOSS With each major muscle group being contracted more than 2000 times per session, there is a very fast gain in Tonus to the fibres. The effect of this is to produce a tightening of slack muscles and corresponding inch loss.
IMPROVED POSTURE Toning tables flatten the tummy and pulls in the buttocks, making both appear firmer and smaller. They will help you re-align the pelvis and spine, helping to eliminate hunched shoulders. You will also strengthen and lengthen postural muscles, restoring them to their natural length. By strengthening the upper spine and lengthening the upper chest muscles – should e r droop is
corrected and the bust line is lifted. The thoracic spine is straightened making the client look taller. It also offers relief of lower back pain.
CELLULITE REDUCTION The ‘venus return’ of blood to the heart is stimulated increasing the removal of waste products from the cells. As localised blood and lymphatic circulation is stimulated it helps to eliminate toxins which can cause water retention. IMPROVED MOBILITY AND FLEXIBILITY Both the muscles and joints ability to bend and rotate through a full range of movement is increased and therefore less vulnerable to injury. For optimum benefit and to maintain improvements we recommend using the tables at least two or three times a week. The toning machines are so easy to use with such a wide range of results that everyone, whatever their physical fitness, can enjoy and benefit from this excellent exercise.

SuperValu Fáilte Ireland, South West and Mid-West Region Tidy Towns Awards
Making a clean sweep STORM DESMOND catapulted the eagerly anticipated regional Tidy Towns awards from their original date in December into the new year, but when they at last took place on Friday they were well worth waiting for. The SuperValu Tidy Towns awards ceremony for the South West and Midwest Region unfolded amidst grand fanfare in the Listowel Arms Hotel. Minister for Diaspora Affairs Jimmy Deenihan and Grace O’Dwyer of SuperValu, competition sponsor, presented the awards and also joining them onstage was Siobhan King of Fáilte Ireland. The overall winner for the region was Listowel, which was also the national winner. Killarney and Kenmare received gold medals, as did Listowel and Tralee, while Sneem was awarded a silver medal and Knightstown won a bronze medal. Listowel was also the county winner while Killarney was highly commended, Kenmare was commended and Kilgarvan won an endeavour award. Portmagee was highly commended in the SuperValu diversity award. Minister Deenihan congratulated “the very many enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers who get involved in this great competition every year”. “The unselfish effort and the generosity displayed by these volunteers really does make a difference to our communities. The result of their hard work is evident across the region in towns and villages that are inclusive, better cared for, better places to live and more attractive places to visit,” he said. Minister Deenihan also thanked Tidy Towns’ main sponsor SuperValu. “I thank SuperValu for their continued sponsorship of this competition. Musical maestro hits the right note for bride and groom BY EVE KELLIHER TOES were tapping in earnest at the nuptials of Sinéad Fleming and Daniel MacSweeney. Sinéad, the daughter of Doreen and David Fleming, Faugh, Muckross, and Daniel, the son of Katherine and Eddie MacSweeney, Ballaugh, Carrigeencullia, Headford, were wed in the Church of the Holy Sprit, Muckross, on January 2 and held their reception in the Muckross Park Hotel. The ceremony was led by Fr Kieran O'Brien and the music was by Morgan Pierce and the couple’s friend Patrice O'Connor. As the bride and groom come from two large families they opted to have their church wedding and the first of two receptions for their families. Doreen and David, Sinéad’s parents, had a surprise in store for the newlyweds during the first reception, with accordion maestro Liam O’Connor and friends performing. “Within seconds everyone was on their feet,” said Daniel. Still in the mood for dancing, the newlyweds headed to their second reception, for their extended families, close friends and neighbours. After their second meal of the day as husband and wife, they danced into the wee hours to the sounds of wedding band
Johnny B and the Boogy Men. Micheál O’Sullivan captured the big day on camera. The bride wore a gown by Claire Pettibone with makeup by Norma Murphy and hair by Magda Gabrys of Chocolate. The flowers were by Breda Nagle. Neily O’Sullivan chauffeured the couple in style in a Volkswagen bus and the wedding cake was by Sinead’s sisters-in-law. The guest of honour was the groom’s grandfather, Peter Sheahan. Sinéad’s sister Aoife Fleming was chief bridesmaid and Caoimhe Fleming, Sinéad’s daughter, was bridesmaid. Daniel’s brother Edward MacSweeney made the trip from Australia to be his best man and Daniel’s childhood friend Aidan O'Conner was his groomsman. The bride’s nieces and nephew took central roles also while Lara and Aira Fleming were flower girls with Ethan Fleming as pageboy. Sinéad is a pastry chef with Daly’s SuperValu and Daniel works in Munster Joinery.

The Killarney Tyre Centre team is celebrating recently being appointed Kerry’s only Continental Tyre agency. “We import and buy in bulk ourselves. HOME & AWAY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + VIEWS F MIGRANT PROBLEM Europol has disclosed that smuggler gangs are making huge profits exploiting Europe’s refugee crisis. The criminal gangs have made human trafficking a money-spinning industry fuelled by a "seismic" development in the trade in Europe, Europol's director Rob Wainwright said. According to the European Union's law enforcement agency the gangs made as much as £4billion in the last year. Europol arrived at the figures through debriefings with 1,500 asylumseekers, refugees and economic migrants showing that 90pc had paid a criminal gang to reach Europe. Mr Wainwright said: "We also know that, on average, each migrant is paying between 3,000 and 6,000 dollars to a criminal facilitator for their journey. So you do the simple math and you're up to a turnover in 2015 of between three and six billion dollars. They are big figures. It's running in to billions of dollars made by criminal networks in one year alone in Europe." Europol identified 10,700 suspects last year from networks spanning from sub-Saharan Africa to Scandinavia. Desperate migrants, fleeing in fear and from reported abuse in their homelands, are prepared to pay different gangs of traffickers every step of the way to Europe. To add to their misery some of them are also stripped of their life savings, given seats on boats that are deliberately scuttled or they may face kidnapping or extortion. The scale of the crisis means that smugglers, many of whom may also be involved in the drug trade, have found a new lucrative supply of victims and governments and law enforcement need to toughen up, according to Mr Wainwright. He added: "We're going to have to up our game in terms of dismantling this criminal infrastructure in a more successful way than we have done in the past." There can be no doubt that ISIL is masterminding this criminal activity and are also using the crisis to infiltrate terrorists in to Europe. They know that when a boat full of refugees arrive on our shores we will do the Christian thing and provide support and shelter and ISIL will take full advantage of our charity and use it against us. I’m not sure our leaders fully understand the threat. As part of his anti-terrorism plan, France’s President Hollande will soon present a package before parliament to write into the French constitution the power to strip nationality from French-born dual citizens convicted of terrorism. I am not sure what affect the prospect of losing a French passport will have on potential suicide-bombers but it’s hardly likely to deter them.

A MOVEABLE FEAST Christian Church leaders are discussing the possibility of Easter Sunday falling on the same day each year. As it stands, Easter can fall any Sunday between March 22 and April 25. It really is a moveable feast. Most of us don’t know when Easter falls until we get sight of the new calendar after Christmas and the usual comments are: “Oh, Easter is early (late) this year.” It’s always a surprise. At present, Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal (Spring) equinox around March 21. It can be as early as March 22, as happened in 1818; or as late as April 25 as in 1943. The date is calculated through a complicated synthesis of mathematics, astronomy and theology which remains a mystery to me. I’m in awe of those who look for calendars “with the moons!” The variation of Easter affects school terms, exams and almost everything you do in the spring or summer. As it is, the second school term can either be too long or too
short. A long second term tires both teachers and pupils and leaves a short third term to prepare for exams. It also affects tourism, shops and sporting fixtures. Setting a date would facilitate schools and universities who could plan with certainty. Likewise for those planning holidays and the tourism industry in general, a set date would be enormously advantageous. Easter in Killarney is always a very busy time but sometimes we have to wait too long for it to come and then it comes on top of the summer season and we get too much in a very short space of time. Easter can be a full four months after Christmas which is barely a month before the summer holiday season. Perhaps a Sunday in early April would we good. Then, hoteliers and holiday makers could plan with certainty. In many parts of the world, Easter is a major holiday and the introduction of a definite date would be a huge boost not just for the Christian churches but also for industry & commerce.

He added the first salmon of the year is a first for the area and will hopefully bring more visitors. The fishing season opened in Waterville on Sunday but opens earlier in some locations in Ireland. Neil was presented with the Paddy Carey Memorial Trophy which is named after his late uncle.

Gardaí investigate possibility of personal grudge in murder case
Households that use scented candles and other perfumed products could be at risk of cancer, scientists have warned. In a study examining the presence of "volatile organic chemicals" (VOCs) in homes, researchers looked at six similar houses over the course of five days.. The most prevalent chemical was found to be limonene, which is often used to give a citrus smell to fragranced candles, plug-ins, air fresheners and cleaning products. The team of experts, led by Professor Alastair Lewis of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of York, found levels of limonene to be highest in the three houses that used the most cleaning products. While the chemical is harmless on its own, once it comes into contact with ozone - which is in the air all around us - it reacts to form formaldehyde, a chemical that has been listed as a known human carcinogen since 2011. It's present in
some furniture, and is produced by burning cigarettes or by gas stoves. Analysing the reaction in a laboratory, Professor Lewis found every two molecules of limonene could produce one molecule of formaldehyde. Therefore it came as no surprise to the experts when they found a correlation between the high levels of limonene in the homes and the amount of formaldehyde. They warned that if homes were not adequately ventilated - as is often the case during cold winter weather - the levels of formaldehyde could build up to unhealthy levels. However, apart from the chilly option of opening windows, the scientists found household plants could also reduce the amount of formaldehyde in the air. English ivy (Hedera helix), geraniums, lavender and many ferns were found to be the best plants to absorb the toxic chemical.
TIME FOR PRICE DROP It used to be the norm that when the price of fuel rose, the price of commodities rose too. Diesel went up, so did bread. I’m waiting patiently for prices to drop. Oil prices have slumped below $30 for the third time in a week as traders took fright at the prospect of Iranian oil flooding global markets. Fears that the Islamic Republic could add to the world's oil glut as early as next week sent Brent crude falling by 3.30pc to $29.43 - matching lows last seen in 2004. West Texas Intermediate also slipped back to $29.60, a decline of 4.5pc. Oil has shed more than 75pc since last summer a post war record - as over-supply and fears over global economic growth has depressed traders. Friday's sell-off reversed a brief rally that saw prices back up to $31. But bearish sentiment returned as markets saw Iran’s western-imposed sanctions lifted over the weekend. The Islamic Republic has vowed to return its oil production to pre-sanction levels, with estimates
suggesting Tehran will add a further 500,000 barrels a day (b/pd) to the world's bloated stockpiles within weeks. “How fast Iran can put oil back on the market will now be a key issue for oil markets, with many sceptical that it will be able to do this nearly as fast as it has forecast," said Ric Spooner at CMC Markets. Iran has resisted calls from rival Saudi Arabia to hold back on production in the face of faltering global energy demand. The rift between the two Middle East powers has paralysed OPEC, the world's oil cartel, which has abandoned formal production targets for the first time in its history. The relentless fall in prices is set to see oil finish the week at its lowest level in 12 years. Falling oil prices are expected to push down global inflation by 1pc in 2016 according to estimates from J.P. Morgan. Whatever happened to “peak oil?” It seems the world is awash with oil after all the years of experts telling us reserves there was no oil.
GARDAÍ are investigating whether the motive for the murder of Kenneth O'Brien may have been of a personal nature. The 33-year-old's dismembered body was found in a suitcase in the Grand Canal in Co Kildare at the weekend. Phone records and CCTV footage are being examined for clues. The murder inquiry team is also trying to find the location where Mr O'Brien was killed, and the rest of his remains. They are also interviewing family and friends in a bid to uncover any issue of a personal nature that may have provided a motive for the murder. Diesel fitter Kenneth, who had returned home from Australia in recent weeks, left his home in Clondalkin, west Dublin, last Friday and was never seen again.
Young man killed in Galway crash A MAN in his 20s has died in a crash in Co Galway. The car he was travelling in hit a wall at Baile Liam in Spiddal, about five minutes before midnight on Wednesday. Gardaí along with units of the Fire and Ambulance Services attended the scene. The occupant of the car was removed from the vehicle and taken by ambulance to University Hospital Galway. He was later pronounced dead.
Hundreds wanted for crimes in Kerry HUNDREDS of suspects wanted for crimes committed in Kerry still remain at large. Figures released this week by Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald revealed that up to the end of 2015, 633 bench warrants issued in Kerry courts had still not been executed.

Rise in property enquiries from overseas ALMOST one in six overseas enquiries about Irish property are now coming from the United States, a national estate agents survey has found. US property buyers are flocking to secure homes and investment properties in Ireland, buoyed by a strong dollar and the lure of a resurgent economy for emigrants, the Real Estate Alliance nationwide survey has confirmed. A survey of REA members shows that enquiries from the US increased from almost zero to 16% in 2015. And this could signal the first major return of emigrants who feel that the time is right to move back to Ireland. “While there has always been interest from the US market, this has increased markedly in a year that saw a 22% increase in overseas enquiries about Irish property,” said REA chairman Michael O’Connor. “Overall, calls from overseas buyers represented 19% of all enquiries received by REA agents in 2015 and 16% of total sales. “Forty-nine per cent of our enquiries came from the UK, 8% from continental Europe, 10% from Australia, but the real surge in new interest came from the US. The exhibition takes place in the Fitzpatrick Hotel at Grand Central, Manhattan, from 5-7pm on March 3.

‘Loan scheme would have negative impact on rural families’ YOUNG people from rural backgrounds will be disproportionately affected by the loan scheme if brought in after the upcoming General Election. If the new proposed loan scheme comes into effect this will mean changes to the current grant system that have a negative impact on families from rural backgrounds, such as asset testing for grants and replacing grant payments with loans. Students from rural backgrounds already face greater financial strains than those from urban areas with expenses like transport and accommodation. Any implementation of the new proposed loan scheme for students would disproportionately affect those from rural and agricultural backgrounds, deter them from applying to college, and widen the gap between urban and rural opportunities. People from rural backgrounds are more likely to be on third-level grants and so
are more likely to be affected by the new proposals, for example 67% of students at LYIT (Letterkenny Institute of Technology) are on the grant, compared to only 24% of Trinity students. The cost of college according to DIT Campus Life’s ‘Cost of Living’ survey is €11,000 a year for students to live away from home, compared to €7,000 a year for those who live at home. Families and students from rural backgrounds should vote for a party who will increase students support such as the
student assistant fund, grants (both undergraduate and postgraduate) and who will reduce the registration fee which currently stands at €3,000 a year. For many families, education is already unaffordable. It should be a right, not a privilege and while politicians say that free education would be too big a strain on the state, every other country in the EU, with the exception of the UK, have lower registration fees and better student support. Free education enables social mobility, breaks poverty traps, empowers the youth and creates a level playing field where true equality is possible. It should be a priority for the next government, so USI is urging families across Ireland to vote for parties who will prioritise education and brighten the future of their children. Kevin Donoghue, USI President Via email
‘Communities with a history, or future risk, of flooding, face extinction’ MUINTIR NA TÍRE, the National Association for Community Development, commends the work carried out by community groups in the recent flooding crisis. Muintir na Tíre Community Councils are well known for their community initiatives. However it is when the chips are down in a community that they really come to the fore. Early in 2015, Muintir na Tíre launched the Save Rural Ireland initiative, in partnership with several other national bodies. We made a number of recommendations to Government, including that the Memorandum of Understanding with the insurance industry be amended to guarantee insurance cover for homes and businesses in areas where flood prevention measures have been completed by the OPW. Unfortunately it is now too late for some, but we still hope this will be implemented urgently so that people can continue to live in their homes and businesses can continue to operate. Otherwise communities with any history, or even slight future risk, of flooding, face extinction. Niall Garvey, CEO, Muintir na Tíre, via email

The Pinnacle of WRC for Paul Nagle THE Abu Dhabi Total WRT has entered two cars at the Rallye Monte-Carlo this weekend, the opening round of the 2016 World Rally Championship. One car is driven by Kris Meeke, Dungannon, and co-driven by Paul Nagle, Killarney. They will have to meet the combined challenge of Monte’s demanding course and the typically wintry conditions that are expected at the event. As usual, the new season kicks off with this, the world’s most famous rally. The Abu Dhabi Total World Rally Team will be competing at a number of European rounds of the WRC. Kris and Paul have secured a three-year deal with the team Citroen which will see them return to the new generation WRC Citroen in 2017. “Monte Carlo is the pinnacle,” said Paul. “You’re over on the streets of Monaco before it starts, then you go into the mountains for a couple of days and you’ve the snow and ice and tricky conditions and it’s one of those ones, when you have that on the CV it’s one to keep. It’s the pinnacle of the WRC.” Kris Meeke is competing in what is already his eighth Monte-Carlo. After scoring a podium-finish here in 2014 alongside co-driver Paul Nagle, he has proven his ability to keep out of trouble on the tricky course in the south of France. Already very familiar with the car, he may have greater freedom here and be able to adopt a bolder strategy! Rallye Monte-Carlo shakedown this week provided an opportunity for Kris and Paul to impress. The Abu Dhabi Total WRT crew set the quickest time on their first run, before the road became increasingly muddy, making it impossible to improve at all. Hopefully this form will continue throughout the event. Paul Nagle, co-driver to Kris Meeke on this weekend's WRC opener on the Rallye Monte-Carlo.

Up to nine villages could be left with no doctor UP TO nine villages across the county could be left without a GP within three or four years, according to a leading Kerry doctor. Dr Gary Stack, well-known Killarney GP and medical director of SouthDoc, said Government cutbacks mean doctors no longer have any incentives to replace those due to retire in rural Kerry.
Man injured after fall in Gap of Dunloe A MAN was injured after falling near Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the Gap of the Dunloe yesterday (Thursday). Members of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team attended the scene.
Dr Stack appeared on the live Newstalk debate with Kerry’s election candidates in The Gleneagle Hotel on Monday. The abolition of the Rural Practice Grant and the Patient Distance Code, as well as a 40% cut to GPs’ fees are in part to blame for what Dr Stack described as a “major crisis” “We’ve already lost the guard and
the post office, and the doctor is next and there is no plan in place to rejuvenate rural life,” he said. The matter was also raised at Kerry County Council’s meeting on Monday where Cllr Michael Gleeson asked the Government to take appropriate measures to ensure newly qualified doctors find it attractive to remain here.

And the windfall was welcomed by the Kerry Hospice Foundation this week. Pat Doolan, chairman of the Killarney branch of Kerry Hospice, thanked all involved in the recording. Kilcummin native Julett’s neighbour, songwriter Ted Leizcyneski, penned the song, The Rose from Lyretough, and Mike Fitzgerald was the singer for the recording. They presented the proceeds to Pat at Kilcummin GAA Clubhouse this week.
Man to appear in court over burglary at Kennedy’s Pet Farm A MAN will appear at Cork District Court tomorrow, Friday, January 22, charged with cruelty offences and handling stolen property arising from an investigation by Killarney Gardaí into a burglary at Kennedy’s Pet Farm, Killarney, in August 2014. During the course of the burglary a number of animals and birds were stolen. Kerry Rose Julett Culloty with singer Mike Fitzgerald, Pat Doolan, Kerry Hospice, and songwriter Ted Leizcyneski.

The father-of-one from Ballinageragh, was the brother of wellknown Listowel solicitor and Fine Gael councillor Aoife Thornton and a first cousin of Kerry football manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice. St Brendan’s march on to Corn Uí Mhuirí semi-final POBALSCOIL CORCA DHUIBHNE’S bid for five in a row came unstuck against rivals St Brendan’s College who will take on St Flannan’s, Ennis, in the semi-finals on February 6. The Killarney side defeated their west Kerry opponents on a scoreline of 1-14 to 0-4. Prior to Wednesday’s quarter-final, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne had not lost a knockout fixture in the Corn Uí Mhuirí since March of 2011 and, having emulated the Tralee CBS team of the early 1930s when securing their fourth consecutive Munster crown last spring, the goal this season was to achieve what had never before been achieved – the five-in-arow. Despite enjoying the backing of a strong wind at Lewis Road, the task facing the Dingle side wasn’t helped by losing 13 of the starting team which successfully defended their Hogan Cup crown last April. Corner-forward Evan Cronin, set up by the talented Lee O’Donoghue, had the Sem off the mark in the eighth minute and their lead was doubled when O’Donoghue turned provider three minutes later from the placed ball. Michael Potts hit the post in the subsequent action. There were five points between the teams at the interval, 1-5 to 0-3. The game as a contest was all but over within 10 minutes of the restart. Tomás Mac a’tSithigh kicked Corca Dhuibhne’s only score of the entire second half. Michael Potts, Chris O’Donoghue and Billy Courtney were the final contributors as St Brendan’s ran out 14-point winners.

Leave my body wherever it may lie, but remember my soul at the alter of the Lord The twenty first of January, two thousand and eight, A date in our memories we’ll never forget A son, a brother, a true friend. You fought so bravely to the very end Though it was in Cork that you passed away, A Kerry man to the bone until your dying day. When we’re feeling down or a little bit blue, We’ll just close our eyes and think of you We’ll hear you in each wind that blows Or in the fall of each December snow A true gentleman you made no fuss It was Johnny time, no need to rush Now he’s playing with angels in heaven up above We’ll keep our special memories And treasure them with love The month’s stretch on before us So bleak and so long We pray you’ll walk beside us, help to keep us strong, And when our life is over, come to us that day, Come smiling towards us and carry us away And now the time has come, to say our last goodbye, But we’ll always remember you, the apple of our eye We’ll go the rest of our lives and never again will see A beautiful gentleman, our one and only Johnny.

I am firmly convinced that through thy merits, through the scorn, the sufferings and the death thou didst endure, united to the merits of the Passion and Death of Jesus thy spouse, I shall obtain what I ask of thee and in the joy of my heart I will bless God, who is admirable in His saints. The 72nd LLA AGM was held recently in the Dromhall Hotel. In spite of the very poor weather, there was a very good attendance. Matters arising from last years AGM were dealt with without delay & reports from the secretary, treasurer & competition secretary were discussed. “The Charity” fishing competition was once again a great success with 8000 euro raised. Election of officers took place & a strong committee has been appointed. John Buckley asked members to give close attention to the new National Strategy for Angling Development (NSAD) document. This is the Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) vision for the future of angling. It is vital that all anglers familiarise themselves with this document which is available on-line on the IFI website. Your views will be welcome at our next meeting. As the Salmon fishing season has already opened, we wish all anglers safe fishing & tight lines.

Irish Indoor Rowing Championships Best of luck to all our members competing in the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships taking place in the UL Arena this Saturday. MUCKROSS HOR The club is pleased to announce the rescheduled Muckross Head Of the River has now been confirmed for Saturday 5th March. With the permission of Rowing Ireland, the club’s annual time trial event will now take place in the final month before regatta season. It was with great disappointment the club was forced to cancel the original fixture in early December as a result of Storm Desmond. The event attracted a large entry from over 25 clubs around Ireland and hopefully the rescheduled event will prove to be a similar draw. In 2003, Muckross RC first took its place on the Rowing Ireland event calendar, hosting a time trial Head event at the National Rowing Centre in Cork. The event has steadily grown over the years at the HQ of Irish rowing and has become an important event in the club’s annual calendar. In the coming weeks, we will be calling on all members past and present, supporters and parents of junior members to pitch in once again to help continue the event’s success. EVENTS The Cork Head Of the River is scheduled to take place on Saturday 6th February at the Marina in Cork. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Michael and Emma O’Riordan and grandparents Margaret, Ray and Florence on the recent birth of baby Alison. We wish Alison, proud parents and all the family every health and happiness for the future.

Senior News Women’s Division 1 Killarney Cougars 55 St Marys 54 The Cougars ladies hosted St Marys in this important Div 1 game at the Pres Gym on Tuesday evening in a meeting of the top two in the league both teams going into the game unbeaten so far in the league and it was the Cougars who came through to take the points thanks to two free throws from Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh with just two seconds remaining in an exciting finish. St Marys held the advantage throughout the game leading by 10 points early in the second half with Cougars very slow to get their game going against the well organised visitors. St Marys led 17 - 12 at the end of the opening qtr as they enjoyed a good spread of scores from Mags Daly, Joanne Riordan and Philomena O’Connor. Cougars struggled through the early stage but the three point shooting of Cassandra Buckley kept Cougars in touch. The teams went basket for basket through the second and third qtrs with St Marys leading 42-37 heading into the final qtr. Cougars had the best spell of the game in the final quarter and came with a late press to tie the game in the final minute 53 - 53. St Marys had the opportunity to make the game safe but missed four three throws in final minute before Tracey Hartnett shot one free throw with 9 seconds on the clock to give the visitors the lead 54 - 53 before Cougars responded after a timeout with Ni Mhuircheartaigh being fouled going to the basket with just two seconds on the clock and she calmly made both as the buzzer sounded to give the determined Cougars a very late victory. nior XV: Se Our Senior XV took on the visiting Youghal RFC in the Munster Junior League last Sunday, at Aghadoe under terrible conditions. Despite the home advantage and some good pressure from our lads, Youghal ran out winners on a scoreline of 23-5. While our lads piled plenty of pressure and threatened the line on a few occasions, the sole try came from a great drive, allowing Paul O’Sullivan to cross the line. The lads travel the short distance to Ballymalis next Sunday to take on Killorglin in the league. Kick off is at 2pm. Let’s get out and support the lads! U12’s trip to Thomond Park A full bus of 40 children and 10 adults traveled to Thomond Park last Saturday morning to watch Munster take on Stade Francais in the Champions Cup. A great game ensued and the kids had a ball. We stopped for food on the way down and everyone had a great day at Thomond. Thanks to Mini Coordinator Liam Murphy for organising this trip and to the parents and coaches who traveled to mind the kids. Well done all! Minis training continues next Saturday.

Killarney Athletic
Results: Denny Premier A Killarney Athletic 0-2 Tralee Dynamos This scoreline does not reflect the how the game developed with the wind being a pivotal factor on the day. Athletic were very unlucky not to be 2-0 up at half time with Shane Doolan and Danny Healy being denied by the post and crossbar respectively. Dynamos played with the wind in the 2nd half and made the most of it by scoring the two goals to take away the 3 points. U16 Killarney Athletic 5-0 Camp. Athletic opened brightly but poor finishing kept the game in the balance. Following Harry Potts opener the team kicked on with lovely football and further goals from Jason Coffey (2), Finbarr Hickey, and Reece Hegarty killed off the game. A big thanks to the parents who drove to the game. Kerry Darts Association
It was a sad weekend in Kerry Dart circles with the passing of Joe Flynn. A minute's silent was observed in his memory at the Munster Championship. Kerry Darts Association Committee would like to extend their sympathies to all Joe’s Family and Friends. May he Rest in Peace. The Munster Singles Championship was held in the Brehan Hotel on Saturday 16th January. With Players traveling from all over to enter and after some brilliant darts been thrown, it came down to Keith O’ Donoghue and a Connie Finnin Final. Keith played some outstanding darts all day to get to the final, it’s easy to see how he won a tournament in Australia. Connie played outstanding also, taking out treble thirteen and double sixteen to finish a seventy one against Kerry Captain John Teahan. The final also saw some brilliant darts thrown, with Connie just missing a nine darter. Connie went on to win, but I’m sure Keith will be back. In the Ladies section Tipperary Ladies beat Limerick Ladies in a cracking final. There was seven county teams entered in the Mens section broken into two groups. One group of four and one group of three. Kerry were drawn in the group of four against Waterford A, Clare A and Tipperary B. The following is the results of the qualifying rounds. Kerry 9 v Clare A 3, Kerry 10 v Tipperary B 2, and Kerry 8 v Waterford A 4. Kerry with 27 points went on to top the group. Kerry then met Tipperary A in the semi-final, some brilliant darts were thrown, with the likes of Castleisland man James Broderick checking out with treble twenty, treble nineteen and double twenty to finish 157. Kerry went on to win 7 to 4. It was now down to the final where Kerry were up against old rivals Limerick. Kerry lost the first game but went on to win the next three. It was starting to look good being up three to one, with wins from Eamon Carey, John Cronin and Kevin McCann. Limerick won the next two games to make it 3 - 3. It was close all the way and after the next two games, Milltown man Dale McCarthy took one win and it became 4 - 4. It was a hard one to call “Who would win next” ? Next up for Kerry was Brosna native now Killarney man Neil O’Donoghue. Neil in his cool and showing no pressure exposure winning and making it 5 - 4. Cromane native and captain John Teahan was to the ochy next pulling in another Kerry win to make it 6 - 4. Limerick took the next game, now it was 6 - 5. Two games remaining, first to seven would be the winners. Phil Standing was next up, also another player to take the pressure, Phil winning his games to make it 7 - 5. A second Munster Championship for Kerry in three years, This one is for you Joe Flynn. Kerry Team were Captain John Teahan, Tom Biggane, James Broderick, Eamon Carey, John Cronin, Kevin
McCann, Richie O’Connor, Jamie Kelliher, Dale Mc Carthy, Neil O’Donoghue, Dave Stack, Phil Standing, Paddy Linehan, Ger Flynn and Manager Gary Mc Cormick. Well done to all in involved. K

Blitz: A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make our blitz last Saturday such a huge success. Oscar Traynor Cup: Best wishes to Kerry, especially the Killarney Celtic players involved, in the Oscar Traynor Cup against
the Leinster Senior League next Sunday at 2.00pm in Mounthawk Park. Results Munster Junior Cup: Holycross, (Limerick) 1 Killarney Celtic 2 This was literal Roy of the Rovers stuff! We were 1-0 down deep into injury time and had struggled to penetrate a superb Corinthians defense. One last chance from a corner….Roy Kelliher is already renowned for calmness personified in the square, but it’s usually his own square! This time, with the situation desperate, he had joined the attack and rose highest to head the ball home. Jubilation for Celtic, desolation for the home side, and a re-energised Celtic hit an extra-time winner when a half-chance fell into the path of a young teenager. ic 1 College Corinthians 6 No complaints, we were well and fairly beaten on the day and we wish College Corinthians the best going forward in the competition. U14 Div One: Camp 7 Killarney Celtic B 0 An understrength Celtic team were well beaten by a superb Camp outfit; we never really got into the game. U12 Girls: Killarney Athletic 5 Killarney Celtic 1 Celtic gave it everything but Athletic were too strong and deserved their win. U12 Div One: Mastergeeha 5 Killarney Celtic B1 Cian McAuliffe slotted a neat penalty for us, but Mastergeeha were the better side and were always going to win this one. U12 Div Two: Listowel Celtic 1 Killarney Celtic C 5 A brilliant display away from home, everybody concentrated and worked hard. There is a huge and visible improvement in these players since the start of the season. Eoghan Crowley and Jim O’Brien got a brace each, with Jack O’Sullivan getting the other goal. Congratulations to U12 player Eoghan Crowley on making the Kerry Schoolboys/ Schoolgirls Team of the Week. Fixtures Denny Premier B: Killarney Celtic B at home to Asdee, Sunday, 11.30am U17 League: Killarney Celtic at home to Park B, Saturday, 2.30pm U16 Girls: Killarney Celtic away to Killarney Athletic, Saturday, 2.00pm U15 Premier: Killarney Celtic at home to Park, Saturday, 11.45am U15 Div One: Killarney Celtic B away to Killarney Athletic, Saturday, 10.30am U13 Premier: Killarney Celtic at home to Listowel Celtic, Saturday, 1.00pm U13 Div One: Killarney Celtic B at home to Killorglin B, Saturday, 10.15am U11 Blitz: Killarney Celtic at home to Mastergeeha, Killarney Athletic, and Inter Kenmare, Saturday, 2.30pm Lotto Numbers drawn 4, 10, 18, 20. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald
Kerry overcome Tipperary in the McGrath Cup KERRY made the trip to Tipperary Town a fruitful one when defeating Tipperary by 0-16 to 0-10 in the McGrath Cup on Sunday last. Eleven of the match-day squad for last year’s All Ireland Final were on duty on the day with nine of those starting. With Clare having won both of their games in the Group, neither Kerry nor Tipperary was in a position to advance to the final. So now it’s on to the Allianz Football Leagues which begins with a visit to Croke Park to take on the All Ireland Champions, Dublin on Saturday week (30th January). The Kerry panel for the first two games (they play Roscommon on February 7 in Fitzgerald Stadium) will include a number of newcomers. Among those will be former minors Brian Ó Beaglaoich (An Ghaeltacht) and Tom O’Sullivan of Dingle. Eamonn Fitzmaurice has also clarified the position with regard to the expected return date for some of the injured absentees; Colm Cooper is due back in training before the Dublin game, in March the likes of Kieran O’Leary, the Geaneys, Paul and Mikey, Anthony Maher and Peter Crowley are due back while James O’Donoghue is expected to return sometime in April. After the home game with Roscommon, there is a three-week break and then you have three games in successive weekends against Down (A), Donegal (Austin Stack Park) and Mayo (A), and following a two week break Kerry finish up with Monaghan (A) and Cork at home.
Tickets for The Allianz Leagues
Tickets are now on sale for the Allianz Football and Hurling Leagues at a pre-purchase discounted price of €10 for Kerry’s games in Division 1 Football and Division 1B in Hurling. Please note that the cut-off time for the pre-purchase

Spa and John Mitchels will have to meet again
John Mitchels and Spa played out an extra time thriller at Brosna on Sunday last in the Senior Football League Promotion playoff that ended all square on a scoreline of 1-15 each. The sides will have to meet again on Sunday next at 1.15pm at a venue to be decided to decide who will accompany champions Templenoe and Kenmare to Division 1 football in the coming season. Sneem/Derrynane captured the Novice Shield in dramatic circumstances at Caherslee on Saturday afternoon when just edging out Moyvane in a gripping extra time contest. Legion
EAST KERRY ALL STARS Following the club’s exciting run to the O’Donoghue Cup final, no fewer than eight Legion players have been named on the long list for the upcoming East Kerry All Stars. Brian Kelly, Danny Sheahan, Chris Davies, Podge O’Connor, Darragh O’Doherty, Shaun Keane, Jamie O’Sullivan and Conor Keane are all in contention for an award at the ceremony, which takes place on January 29th in The Gleneagle Hotel. KERRY CONTINGENT Well done to Podge O’Connor, Jamie O’Sullivan, Brian Kelly and Jonathan Lyne who all featured in Sunday’s victory over Tipperary in the McGrath Cup. Podge and Jamie both started and did well - the latter played the full 70 minutes and kicked a point. Brian, meanwhile, was introduced at half time and Jonathan got 25 minutes under his belt. Kerry ran out 0-16 to 0-10 winners but failed to qualify for the final which will be contested by Cork and Clare. Attention now turns to Dublin in the National League at the end of the month and with four players on the field on Sunday and others sure to be in contention, it all bodes well for a healthy Legion contingent in green and gold for the coming year. Milltown
MEDAL PRESENTATION: Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club was very honoured this evening to have Kerry Footballer and All Star winner Donnacha Walsh to present medals to our under age players. Henry ScanlonChairperson of Bord Na nÓg, welcomed Donnacha and spoke about his 100% commitment when on the field of playa perfect role model for our young club players. Donnacha then gave a very inspiring speech to the players. He began by congratulating all the players and their respective mentors on a terrific year. He spoke of the joy of playing on a team and that being part of a winning team was even more enjoyable. Donnacha then spoke about personal achievements- in particular his All Star Award and how proud both he, his family and his club are of this wonderful achievement. Donnacha was very motivating for our younger players- advising them to continually strive for improvement.... be it developing that weak leg or perfecting your free taking... trying harder all the time. He also pointed out the enjoyment and self-satisfaction that comes with improvement Donnacha reminded all present that there is life outside of football. Yes, you will make friends for life -but football won’t pay the bills! So it is most important to keep the focus on one’s education. Donnacha reminded us how he had studied hard to become a physiotherapist, reiterating the importance of keeping the balance between sport and education Learning to cook was another piece of excellent advice- and being able to take pizza out of an oven will not suffice! Healthy nutritious food is essential for all people -in particular for those performing at the higher end of sport. Donnacha’s final words were for our younger footballers: You are blessed to be from Milltown Castlemaine GAA Club with the many great coaches available to you. Donnacha said he has wonderful memories of his own coaches in Cromane - from his younger days. No doubt you were a pleasure to coach
Gura míle maith agat Donnacha agus go neirí go gheal leat an bhliain seo chugainn. YOUTH COACHING: The Kerry County Coaching group are holding an AWARD LEVEL YOUTH COACHING course for Mid Kerry Clubs/ Coaches commencing on January Tuesday 26th at 7pm in Milltown/ Castlemaine GAA Clubrooms. The content of this course will be aimed at people who are currently involved and prospective coaches who may be interested in coaching, in future years, at U14/16/Minor levels. This course will undoubtedly enhance all future coaching sessions for our up and coming footballers. Please contact Martin Horgan or any of our club executive to book your place on the course. SYMPATHY: The Club extends sincere sympathy to the family, friends and relatives of Declan Clifford, Keel, on his untimely death last Friday. We also send our sympathies to the family of Seán Horgan, Clounmellane, who died on Sunday last. May you both rest in peace. SPEEDY RECOVERY: Unfortunately, one of our minor/senior footballers Gavin McKenna sustained a fracture to his ankle, along with torn ligaments, during our Mid Kerry Final on Sunday last. We send Gavin our best wishes for a complete recovery and look forward to seeing him back playing some more great football very soon. SENIOR TEAM: Hard luck to our senior team in the Mid Kerry Senior Championship Final on Sunday last. We must acknowledge the commitment and dedication of both the team and management, of our senior team throughout the year. Here’s to the 2016 campaign! Congratulations to the Glenbeigh Glencar side on their well-deserved victory. Enjoy the celebrations! MID KERRY MINOR FINAL REPLAY: Come along and support our minors on Sunday next, January 24th when they take on Laune Rangers once again. Throw in is at 2pm - in Beaufort GAA Pitch. This will be a very exciting encounter so you don’t want to miss it! FUN FOOTBALL: FUN FOOTBALL continues in the new community hall on Monday nights. During these sessions, children will be learning FUNdamental movement patterns that are needed for them to lead active lives in their teenage and adult years. A startling report recently released by the WHO remarked about the level of inactivity among children in Ireland, how sedentary children are becoming and how Ireland’s children are going to be the most obese in Europe by 2030. Drop out from sport is huge in the teenage years due to being “bad” at sport. If children realise that they are really good at some sports or at a particular aspect of a sport then they can go ahead and pursue that- be it Basketball Athletics, Martial Arts, Gymnastics, swimming…The list is endless and it is important to remember that all sports will complement each other. Gum shields are necessary and €2 per child to help cover the cost of the hall rental. Further details available from the mentors or on our Face-Book Page.
