Community gets on board to help buy new bus KILLARNEY woman Agnes Casey Rooney set the wheels in motion to take action when she discovered many members of the local community face serious difficulty in going about their daily lives because of the lack of wheelchair-accessible transport. In August, Agnes embarked on a mission to raise funds for a bus for the Kerry Parents & Friends Association. “I have a sister, Mairead, who has intellectual difficulties, and who unfortunately lost most of her mobility a couple of years ago,” said Agnes. “She now has to have a wheelchair-accessible bus to go to work each day. I realised there was a need for funding when the bus arrived for Mairead one morning and the wheelchair access lift didn’t work. When I enquired about this, I was told that the fleet of 17 buses are deteriorating with no funding for replacement.” The buses provide a vital service for home support, respite and everyday activities for people with intellectual disabilities all over the county, said Agnes. With the help of fellow locals, including former Kerry Parents & Friends CEO Tony Darmody, Conor Hennigan, Denis Casey, Gabhan O’Loughlin and Ger Counihan, Agnes swept into action to organise a series of fundraisers. A golf classic on October 1, at Beaufort Golf Club, together with donations to date, has generated €31,150– which brings the group to the halfway mark in its quest to buy a coach. “We are overwhelmed by the generosity we have encountered,” said Agnes. The group is now organising a barn dance, featuring the band Truly Diverse and DJ Donal Clifford. It takes place in Kate Kearney’s Cottage on Sunday, October 23, at 7pm. Contact Agnes on 087-9865258 for further details.

Killarney to feature in RTÉ documentary series THE fourth episode of the current popular TV documentary series, Building Ireland, will focus on the tourist town of Killarney and what made this area such a prime target for the burgeoning tourSusan Hegarty. ism industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The episode will air at 8.30pm on RTÉ One on Friday, October 21, and will be the fourth episode in a six-part series. ‘In part four of the series, presenters Tim Joyce, a civil engineer; geographer, Dr Susan Hegarty; and award-winning architect Orla Murphy will travel to Kerry to explore the history of modern Killarney. Geographer Susan Hegarty will discuss how the history of modern Killarney began with two families – the Herberts and the Brownes – and will meet with local tourism expert Conor Doolan. Meeting at the newly restored Killarney House, they will discuss the relationship between the Browne family and the development of tourism in Killarney by the opening up of the Browne’s estate, which was six times the size of Killarney National Park as it is now. During the 1850s, the Great Southern and Western Railway extended their railway to Killarney, and architect Orla Murphy will investigate how the Railway Hotel, possibly the first hotel built by a railway company in Europe, established a model of comfort and convenience that would be copied the world over. Engineer Tim Joyce will discover the work involved in laying down tracks in some of the most inhospitable terrain in Ireland, taking three years and almost a quarter of a million pounds to complete. Tim will also meet with local railway enthusiast Pat Kavanagh, to discuss the curved Gleesk Viaduct and how there was no straight line in the railway line from Farranfore to Valentia.

“TURN that frown upside down” is one of those comments that has to rank as number one among the more annoying clichés to be heard nowadays. But sometimes – just sometimes – the idea of transforming a negative situation into a positive one can prove life-affirming. In our story above left, we discover how Agnes Casey Rooney took action when she saw the need to raise funds for a new bus to cater for people with special needs in our community. The generosity and goodwill it has engendered has been heart-warming, with the group already halfway towards meeting their target to buy a new coach for Kerry Parents & Friends Association. Agnes told me how one man rang her after reading about the campaign as soon as it was first highlighted by the Killarney Advertiser.

His keenness to donate to the cause proved typical of the response from friends and strangers alike. Meanwhile, his gentlemanly behaviour, poise and sense of fun ensured Michael Fassbender has copperfastened his status as a “king of hearts” among the people of his hometown. The actor was inducted into the Order of Innisfallen at a ceremony in Muckross House last Friday and was guest of honour at the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce black-tie ball at the Europe Hotel & Resort (see our in-depth coverage on pages 32-35). On the other side of the town that evening, charity champions were taking a well-deserved bow in the INEC as the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle unveiled the grand total of €1,737,700 raised by this year’s cycle (for more, see page 16). Kelly welcomes all to new dance academy

W

ORLD-FAMOUS Irish dancer Kelly McDonnell has set up an Irish dance academy in Killarney. The Kelly McDonnell Irish Dance Academy is located at Total Body Fitness Studio at 6/7 Main Street and starts its first three-month term on Tuesday, November 1. This top-class academy will cater for children and adults alike and will feature comprehensive Irish dance classes as well as yoga. Kelly, a native of Newport, Co Tipperary, stared dancing at the age of three with the Fleming Ball Academy in Limerick under the instruction of her teacher Linda Ball. She went on to compete in Munster, All-Ireland and world championships. At the age of 16, Kelly went professional and to this day has not looked back. Throughout her professional career Kelly has performed in some of the most prestigious venues and famous stages in the world and was involved in many high-profile shows. Kelly has worked with Michael Flatley in his show Celtic Tiger. “Working with Michael Flatley was an excellent experience and I learned a lot from his skill and professionalism,” she said. Kelly also performed with Dance of Desire and spent nine years touring in Germany with Magic of the Dance in which she played the lead role. She was most recently involved in the hit show Women of Ireland, with which she spent the last five years, touring all over America, Tokyo and Chile as lead dancer, dance captain and choreographer. In Killarney and Kerry, Kelly is perhaps most recognised for her work with world-renowned musician Liam

12

Killarney Advertiser 14.10.16

O’Connor. Kelly joined Liam’s show at 17 as lead dancer and choreographer and always came back to Killarney for the summer seasons to perform with him. “I give Liam credit for my training in showmanship and knowledge of the Irish music business,” said Kelly. During her years with Liam she performed in Croke Park to 80,000 people for nine All-Ireland football finals. She also performed with Liam for two Ryder Cups and the JP McManus Pro Am where the audience included Tiger Woods. Kelly also performed at the opening ceremony for the Heineken Cup in the Aviva Stadium to 40,000 and her television appearances include GAA Stars, Up For The Match and the Late Late Show. Kelly has also danced for a host of A-list stars, including Leonardo di Caprio, Sharon Stone, Liam Neeson, Richard Gere, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Samuel L Jackson and Bob Geldof. Other choreographers she has worked with include world champion Michael Donnellan and eight-time world champion John Carey.

AS A TEACHER Kelly has had experience in Ireland and in the United States and is perfectly placed to give aspiring dancers coaching and advice from a world-class dancer, choreographer and teacher. Last year Kelly took time out to sit her TCRG exams to become a qualified Irish Dancing teacher. She passed with flying colours and collected her award at the World Irish Dancing Championships in Glasgow last March. Last summer Kelly had the opportunity of teaching with the Scariff School of Irish dancing in Salt Lake City, where she played a major role in preparing over 120 youngsters for the world championships alongside teachers Alan and Steven Scariff. “I learned so much teaching in America; the standard is so high out there and very competitive,” she said. In February, of this year, Kelly finished her last tour and is now concentrating on teaching in Killarney. “After years of touring, airports and hotels I am delighted to be getting rid of the suitcase finally!” said Kelly. Kelly returned to Killarney this summer after receiving a call from the O’Donoghue Ring Hotels (Niall and Suzanne O’Donoghue, owners and producers of Gaelic Roots the Show) to help with creating the new show. “I was delighted to get the call and always happy to work with the O’Donoghues who have always been very good and supportive throughout my career,” said Kelly, who was creative director (alongside musical director Tony O’Flaherty), choreographer and lead dancer with Gaelic Roots which has been running six nights a week since April in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Delighted to be launching the Kelly McDonnell Irish Dance Academy, she said: “I'm very excited to be doing this now, and feel like the time is right, I'm looking forward to passing on my experience, knowledge and skill to the younger generation, I really enjoy working with children and bringing out their talent and also giving them confidence and self-belief. I will also be providing adult classes for a fun new way to stay fit and learn how to do a step or two also. I will also be providing training for dancers who want to further their Irish dancing careers.” The Kelly McDonnell Irish Dance Academy will feature yoga classes for students, including children, also.

Want to enrol for classes? THE Kelly McDonnell Irish Dance Academy’s first three-month term commences on Tuesday, November 1, until January 31. Enrolment takes place next Saturday, October 22, from 1pm to 2pm at Total Body Fitness Studio 6/7 Main Street, Killarney. Contact kellymcdonnelldance@gmail.com or call 086-3308433.

Pedal power generates cash for charity The Ring of Kerry Charity cycle generated an impressive €1,737,700. PICTURE: VALERIE O'SULLIVAN

SOME 47 local charities were the winners when the grand total for this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle was totted up, reaching a whopping €1,737,700. A total of 11,000 intrepid cyclists from across Ireland and beyond saddled up to cycle the scenic Ring of Kerry on July 2 with one shared goal – to use pedal power to generate money for many deserving local charities and this epic achievement was celebrated at a special function in the INEC on Friday night. “We are delighted to have raised such a huge amount again for such deserving local charities,” said cycle PRO Cathal Walshe. “The charities involved do incredible work all year round in our community and it’s a huge honour to be able to support them in this way once a year. It is always really special to see volunteers from the charities helping out on the day in July, thanking the fundraisers as they complete their journey.” Cathal added: “Special thanks must go the hundreds of volunteers who give their time to make the cycle happen. 12 months of planning goes into organising and managing the cycle and this is done by a voluntary committee. Thanks must also go to our fantastic partners and sponsors Supervalu, SKODA, The Kerryman, Nature Valley, Bon Secours Hospital, and the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce. With their support most of the running costs are covered.” The 10 nominated Kerry based charities that will benefit from the money raised are; Aras Mhuire Nursing Home, Derrynane Inshore Rescue, Irish Kidney Association (Kerry branch), Pieta House: Suicide and Self Harm Crisis Centre (Kerry branch), Recovery Haven Kerry, South West Counselling Services Killarney, St Francis Special School, St Joseph’s Nursing Home, Killorglin, St Ita’s and St Joseph’s Post Primary Special School in Tralee and Talbot Grove. Three second-tier charities received €10,000 with 34 additional charities receiving €2,000 each.

‘Let these residents stay in their home, for Heaven’s sake’ KERRY has given a guarded welcome to assurances that the Minister with responsibility for people with disabilities, Finian McGrath, is to visit St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort. Minister McGrath is to meet with service users, their families and staff of the facility. Local TDs and councillors have lobbied on the issue following an outcry from families of people with profound intellectual disabilities after they were informed their loved ones are to be moved into houses scattered across towns and villages across the county. St John of God Community Services, which runs the St Mary of the Angels Centre in Beaufort, said the plans are on foot of national policy to move residents from “congregated settings into “community” settings. Families, however, argue that St Mary of the Angels already represents a community setting and is calling on St John of God to redesignate the facility accordingly. They fear their children and siblings will be unable to adapt to the new circumstances of life in single houses, cut off from a facility they have called home for decades. Deputy Martin Ferris speaking under topical issues in the Dáil, said: “One individual has been there for 29 years and has known no other home. The parents and relatives of the residents are very satisfied with the services provided and speak glowingly of the staff and facilities.” Speaking of the issue, Councillor Michael Cahill said: “It is absolutely outrageous what is happening here and the powers-that-be need to ‘cop themselves on’ and do what is right for these very special residents. Please leave these people in their homes for Heaven’s sake.” Deputy Danny Healy-Rae urged the Minister for Health to protect the facility. “St Mary of the Angels is a very important facility for adults and children with disabilities and I am fighting to stop its closure,” said Deputy Healy-Rae.

various Humanitarian Awards. For many of us, human trafficking and gross violations of human rights are what we see on the news, read about in the newspaper or catch clips online. For Columban Father Shay Cullen, preventing the abuse of women and children at the hands of human traffickers and their own governments is his life’s work. Fr Cullen took action seeking to save the lives of children, destroy the sex tourism business and stop the violation of human rights by co-founding the PREDA (Prevent and Rehabilitate Drug Abusers) Foundation in 1974 with Merle and Alex Hermosa. Fr Shay will be presented with the Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award by the Mayor of Killarney Municipal District,

Cllr Brendan Cronin, at a special ceremony on November 5 at 8pm in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Admission is free and all are welcome. To be sure of a seat, call Killarney Chamber on 064-6637928.

Tom, who is PRO of the Killarney/South Kerry branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Lego, one of the world’s top brand names in children’s toys, has finally produced a product depicting a young person with a disability.” The figure in question is of a young wheelchair user wearing a beanie cap and can be found City theme range 60134 Fun in the Park. The online campaign #toylikeme highlights the need to produce toys representing all children equally. “It is vital that all children have toys they can identify with. Many of the pieces played by the orchestra have featured in countless films, television shows and adverts, and will be familiar to all audiences. The Scotia Ensemble Baroque Series will take place on Saturday, October 22, at 8pm in St Mary’s Church of Ireland, Killarney. “We’re running a special competition where you can win two free tickets and a €40 voucher for The Ross Hotel in Killarney, where you can go for delicious pre-concert cocktails or a meal,” said a spokesperson for the Scotia Ensemble. “Check out the competition and details about other promotions, concerts and recordings on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/scotiaensemble. Women reminded it’s never too early to start planning for retirement IT’S been said that many women have weekly pensions that would barely cover the cost of a haircut. With only 47% of women in Ireland having some form of pension outside of the State pension, Vincent Casey Life & Pensions, Killarney, has decided to raise awareness of the issue and has dedicated the week from October 17-24 to specifically address retirement planning for women. You can never start early enough when it comes to planning for retirement, said Vincent who this year celebrates his 20th year in business. The problem is many people expect the State pension to provide for them in retirement, he notes. “The State contrib-

utory pension is currently €233 per week and it is vital that people look to supplement this,” said Vincent. “Currently it is estimated that the annual income needed in retirement is € 18,000 per annum; this is the equivalent of 50% of the average industrial wage.” Of the 47% of women that

have some form of private pension the average pension that they are providing for is just €2,000 per annum, added Vincent. “Pensions are by far the most tax-efficient method of saving as not alone are you getting tax relief on what you are paying, but the fund as it grows is also exempt from tax until drawdown,” he added. If you are interested in finding out more about setting up a pension, reviewing an existing pension or finding out about a pension that you paid into previously, call Vincent on 064-6636410 to book an appointment and he will arrange to meet with you during that week.

Date change for quiz and auction in aid of homelessness fundraiser A BUMPER table quiz and charity auction has been planned to help in a fundraising initiative planned by two well-known Killarney business people. The date of the event has been changed due to unforeseen circumstances and it will now take place in The Laurels Lounge on Wednesday, October 19, at 8.30pm sharp. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Kate O’Leary, and Cllr Niall Kelleher will both spend a night sleeping out to help raise funds and awareness of the homelessness crisis that is sweeping the country. Their involvement is part of Focus Ireland campaign which will see prominent business interests and public representatives sleeping out in either Cork or Dublin on October 21 to shine a light on the homelessness crisis. They have both set a target of raising at least €5,000 for the cause and, to help them achieve that goal, they will host the fun quiz and auction. In addition to some great prize for the winners, there will also be a super auction at which a number of valuable and impressive prizes will come under the auctioneer’s gavel. “Family homelessness has reached historic proportions in Ireland with more than 2,100 children living in emergency homeless accommodation, often unable to get to school, rarely getting a home-cooked meal and sinking into darkness. “I don’t want to accept this as today’s landscape so I’m joining my peers to make a difference,” Cllr Kelleher said.

Marc Ó Sé announces retirement from intercounty football Winds of change: Kerry footballer Marc O Se pictured at Blennerville, Tralee, on Wednesday soon after he announced he his retirement from football.

STALWART Kerry defender Marc Ó Sé announced his retirement from intercounty football this week. The five-time All-Ireland winner announced his retirement from intercounty football following a career in the green and gold that stretches all the way back to 1998. The Gaeltacht club man, who made his championship debut in 2002 against Limerick, won every honour in the game and shares a record 88 championship appearances for his county with his older brother Tomás. Marc thanked his family, the Kerry County Board, selectors, trainers, doctors, physiotherapists and backroom staff as well as the players and supporters. “I wish to thank Jack O'Connor, Pat O'Shea and of course Eamonn Fitzmaurice for all their guidance and support during my years wearing the green and gold. I would also like to pay special tribute to my late uncle Páidí who guided me through my first two seasons with Kerry, particularly when there were question marks still hanging over me, but he continued to believe in me and while Páidí was no longer Kerry manager from 2003 onwards he remained a huge influence and a constant mentor throughout my career,” he said. Speaking in an interview with his former teammate Dara Ó Cinnéide on An Saol ó Dheas on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta on Wednesday, Marc said he had made his decision to retire before the All-Ireland semi-final. “I suppose it was in my head for the year. Down through the years, I was very proud to play for Kerry, and I enjoyed having an influence on the team. I suppose I didn’t have that same influence this year, that’s what I felt,” he said. Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice paid glowing tribute to Marc saying: “He led by example and helped to drive a culture of excellence within the setup.”

Eyes on the prize Trevor O’Donoghue charts the history of the Ig Nobel Prizes THE Nobel Prizes are awarded each year to recognise outstanding advances in physics, chemistry, literature, peace, economic sciences and physiology or medicine. There is however, another prize ceremony, the Ig Nobel Prizes, that gives scientists and researchers additional opportunity to be recognised by their peers. Now in their 26th year, the Ig Nobels are awarded every September to honour achievements that make people laugh and then make them think. The prizes' intention is to celebrate the unusual, honour the imaginative and spur people's interest in science, medicine and technology. The awards are presented at a lavish ceremony in Harvard by genuine Nobel laureates. This year's award winners give a flavour of the pedigree and variety of the research honoured at the Ig Nobels. The prize in medicine was awarded for the discovery that if you have an itch on the left side of your body, you can relieve it by looking into a mirror and scratching the right side of your body. This of course works with in reverse for an itch on the right side of your body. The prize for biology was awarded jointly to a Charles Foster,

for living in the wild at different times as a badger, an otter, a deer, a fox and a bird; and to Thomas Thwaites for creating prosthetic extensions of his limbs that allowed him to move in the manner of, and spend time roaming hills in the company of, goats. In addition to the useful scientific research honoured at the ceremony, some of the other winning entries have a more intrinsic value such as the economics prize for assessing the perceived personalities of rocks from a sales and marketing perspective; and the prize awarded to Japanese investigators for investigating whether things look different when you bend over and view them between your legs.

The stage is set for an intriguing battle Kerry GAA public relations officer John O’Leary looks ahead to the Garvey’s Supervalu Senior Football Championship Final which takes place at 3.30pm on Sunday in Fitzgerald Stadium

ALL roads lead to Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday when Dr Crokes and Kenmare District contest the Garvey’s Supervalu Senior County Football Championship Final. It’s a unique pairing in many ways. Dr Crokes, having contested five finals on the trot between 2009 and 2013, winning four-in-a-row, will feel that is something of an eternity since they last contested a final while on the other hand, the district side are appearing in their first county final since 1987. Indeed if we have even half the drama of that game, then we are in for a treat. On that occasion, the final went to a replay and extra time that had a dramatic ending when Eugene McCarthy blasted the ball to the Dr Crokes net to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. There is no doubt that Dr Crokes have been the form team throughout the year with the one bit of a blip coming at the hands of Tralee rivals Austin Stacks in the club championship final. Kenmare District have certainly been a breath of fresh air to this year’s

championship and no doubt the current well-being of the game, particularly in Kenmare and Templenoe, is reflected in the performances of the district side. Last Sunday they got a right test of their character from Rathmore before escaping with victory by the minimum margin in a 39-point shoot-out. The scene is set for an intriguing battle on Sunday. Dr Crokes will bring a wealth of experience into the game with the likes on Colm Cooper, Eoin Brosnan, Brian Looney, Daithí Casey and Kieran O’Leary showing the way for young players such as Shane Murphy, Gavin White, Gavin O’Shea and Tony Brosnan. All of that adds up to a nice blend of youth and experience. By contrast, Kenmare are a very young side all round who play with a youthful enthusiasm that has endeared them to many football followers throughout the county this year. Though young in years, many of them have tasted success either at county or club level.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Killarney House benefiting from Budget with additional half million euro I WELCOME Minister for Public Expenditure Pascal Donohue’s confirmation that an additional half a million euro will be allocated to Killarney House, under the Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. It’s one of a number of selected projects across the country that have received additional funding thanks to Budget 2017. Killarney House has already received €1.9 million from the Department. The refurbishment of Killarney House was announced in 2011, as a joint project between the Department and Fáilte Ireland, and I believe the house has the capacity to become the top tourist attraction in the south-west. This continued support by Minister Donohue comes in what has been a crucial year for Killarney House, and will provide a vital link between the town centre and park. Killarney House is a magnificent place that has been beautifully restored thanks to Government investment and will hopefully become the main visitor centre for Killarney National Park. The gardens were opened this year with 70,000 estimated visitors over the summer, and the museum is to be formally opened in the coming months. The refurbishment of the historical site is the most significant development for Kerry tourism in years. Every little helps in terms of improving and promoting our tourism offering here in Kerry. The Government knows the vital importance that tourism plays in the Kerry economy. This type of funding is crucial to helping us maintain and upgrade Killarney’s tourism potential. Senator Paul Coghlan, Fine Gael, Ballydowney, Killarney

Road improvements from Killarney to Ballyvourney AT THE Kerry County Council meeting of May 2015, I highlighted the deplorable condition of much of the N22 National Primary Road from the County Bounds to Killarney. By way of photographs I sought to impress upon my council colleagues and management how potholed and dangerous the road was in places, particularly close to Cornamaree Bridge in the townland of Derryreagh, Clonkeen. I stated that the surface posed a severe danger to all road users and in particular to cyclists. I am now very pleased to inform the travelling public that the TII (Formerly the NRA) has commenced a 3km pavement overlay scheme at cost of almost €500,000 along this stretch. This will ensure that the road will be much safer for all travelling on the Killarney/Ballyvourney road. There are many other poor sections on this vital access road to our beautiful county, including two very busy roundabouts and a deplorable level crossing at Minish and it is imperative for the economic welfare of Kerry that they too are upgraded as quickly as possible. Applause for Michael Fassbender in his hometow

Home support ‘takes my breath away’, says Michael Fassbender WELL, he wowed the town when he was in Killarney on Friday with his showstopping smile and heartfelt words of thanks as Michael Fassbender was inducted into Order of Innisfallen. The acclaimed actor was honoured in his hometown with the greatest accolade the town can bestow in recognition of his remarkable achievements in the film industry, which has seen him nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs. And in the process, he availed of every opportunity to promote Killarney on an international scale. The 39-year-old actor was feted by the town’s Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and Kerry County Council at a reception at Muckross House in Killarney National Park on Friday evening and, later, at a gala black tie ball in the five-star Europe Hotel and Resort. He was accompanied by stunning screen star and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and his Killarney-based parents, Josef and Adele. The actor said he was “deeply humbled” by the honour, and told the gathering in the drawing room of Muckross House of his pride in being able to say: “I come from Kerry, I come from the Kingdom, I come from Killarney, I come from Fossa.” “The support for me here in Killarney and Fossa and Kerry takes my breath away,” said Michael, who described his native Killarney and Fossa as “a very magical place”. Michael’s family home is in Fossa and he was once an altar boy at the nearby Prince of Peace Church and he attended the local national school before going on to St Brendan’s College and, later, successfully chasing his dream to become one of the world’s most in-demand actors. He has starred in such blockbusters as 12 Years A Slave, Hunger, Steve Jobs, Prometheus, Frank, Shame, Macbeth and Jane Eyre and he has just completed Assassin’s Creed. The Order of Innisfallen award is presented annually to people who have made a significant contribution to the economy of Killarney. The presentation was made by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President, Kate O’Leary, and Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin.

Star’s delighted Killarney mentors turn out in force FROM school productions to the bright lights of Hollywood, actor Michael Fassbender has never forgotten his roots. And his former teachers from his alma maters, Fossa National School and St Brendan’s College, as well as his first mentor, Donie Courtney, were there to wish him well as he was honoured at Muckross House on Friday. The acting bug bit when Michael was a student at St Brendan’s College, which is where he first encountered actor Donie Courtney, who is now a teacher in the Gaiety School of Acting. Donie had returned to St Brendan’s to run drama workshops and Michael got involved in the Bricriu theatre company founded by Donie. Michael produced and played in an adaptation of the 1992 American crime film, Reservoir Dogs, with classmates, including Eoin O’Shea, now a documentary-maker with the BBC, in London. They produced the show in Revelles Nightclub for two nights. After taking an acting course at Coláiste Stíofáin Naofa, in Cork, the Fossa man moved to London for further drama studies and worked in theatre and commercials, including a 2004 Guinness ad which had him swimming from the Cliffs of Moher to Manhattan. He got smaller parts in a number of films, including Band of Brothers, before landing a breakthrough role in 2008 film, Hunger, based on the story of H-Block hunger striker, Bobby Sands. O’DONOGHUE CUP QUARTER-FINAL

Light at the end of the tunnel for Spa? Adam Moynihan reports on the match played at Dereen last Saturday won by Spa on a scoreline of Spa 2-13, Legion 1-13 2016 HAS been a difficult year for Spa but victory over Legion has given them something to smile about at last. In fact, so impressive was this performance it makes you wonder if they have another big game (or two) in the tank before they call it quits for the season. That might be asking too much considering their likely opponents but at the very least there were plenty of positives to take home from last weekend’s ill-tempered encounter. The two-man full-forward line of Mike O’Donoghue and Evan Cronin were rampant in the first half, racking up two goals and seven points between them. In the end they were responsible for all but two of Spa’s points on the day. Cronin is a real livewire and the 19-year-old stole in for two crucial goals in the opening stages, his enthusiastic celebrations a clear reflection of how desperate Spa were to prevail. O’Donoghue was also on form. He kicked three straight points towards the end of the half to give Spa a ten-point lead before coming out to midfield following the black card dismissal of Liam Kearney just before the break. Legion were awarded a penalty for the same incident but their talisman James O’Donoghue, who was marshalled excellently by Dan O’Donoghue throughout, saw his strike saved by James Devane in the Spa goal. Spa were forced to play the entirety of the second period a man light when their captain Eoin Cronin saw red in first half stoppage time and Legion rattled off six unan-

swered points either side of half time to cut the Spa lead to four. Some expert free-taking from Mike O’Donoghue, however, settled Spa’s nerves as he again kicked three points in a row, the first a monster effort from beyond the 45 to end a rare spell of Legion dominance. Not for the first time this year, Legion struggled to break down a team with fewer players and although it was clear that they’d need a goal if they were to have any hope, it never looked like coming. When the relentless Dara Moynihan scored to put seven points between the teams with just two minutes to go, the game should have been well and truly beyond Legion. But remarkably a James O’Donoghue free, followed by a scrappy Shaun Keane goal, followed by a bizarre incident involving a missing kicking tee, meant that with seconds remaining referee Eddie Walsh was forced to hop the ball on Spa’s 21 with a just goal in it. Luckily for Spa they avoided absolute disaster and cleared their lines. A fight broke out after the final whistle and Tom Moriarty was shown a red card, a fittingly ignominious end to a terrible year for Legion. Spa now find themselves in the hat for the semi-final draw with Gneeveguilla, Rathmore and either Crokes or Listry. You would think that they'd have to beat one of Rathmore or Crokes (if not both of them) to win their first O’Donoghue Cup since 1989 so at the moment it’s difficult to tell if that’s a light at the end of the tunnel or just an oncoming train.

Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy WELL, what an interesting weekend! Rassie Erasmus’ Munster honeymoon is finally over. Munster left the Aviva with their collective tails between their legs, having lost to Leinster on a 25 points to 14 points scoreline. As much as Munster giftwrapped a few points to the Blues, Leinster rode their luck with Nacewa’s second try looking dubious following what looked like a forward pass. However, the eastern province had their homework done. Munster had some big guns travelling to Dublin, with the likes of Murray, Stander, Earls and the returning captain Peter O’Mahoney returning to action after almost a year on the sidelines following the World Cup injury. Next up is a trip to Paris to take on Racing 92 in the European Cup, which is in the middle of a media storm due to doping allegations involving high-profile players. Both sides will badly want a win. It was great to see Paul O’Connell on the Late Late Show last Friday. His new book will be a Christmas List bestseller, I reckon. He is a very funny guy and has lots of stories to tell from his playing days. Well worth a read. Closer to home, our Youths teams had mixed fortunes over the weekend, Our under-14s beat Castleisland, our under-16s lost to Abbeyfeale and our under-18s lost to Chorca Dhuibhne. They are building very strong squads under fantastically experienced coaches and could always use a few new players at every age. If you or anyone you know between the ages of 12 and 18 is interested in playing rugby, contact Paul on 087-3745351. At Minis, we at Killarney Rugby Club are currently getting lots of girls playing rugby and they are thoroughly enjoying it. We as a club are actively promoting rugby for girls and would encourage all girls to “give it a try” as the saying goes. Sure why not pop up to Aghadoe any Saturday morning and check it out.

Why Killarney is the place to be for Christmas parties FOR over a decade now, The Christmas in Killarney Festival has ensured that Killarney is the festive capital of Ireland. The dedicated committee is already in action getting set to stage a wonderfully magical festival and party-planners would be very well advised to remain alert to the many ways in which the town will offer the (picture)-perfect backdrop to your own Yuletide celebration. Christmas in Killarney started out as a scheme back in 2005 to buy new Christmas lighting for the town and has become a pivotal winter festival with a myriad of offerings for all ages. In 2011, George Lee, presenter of RTE's The Business, awarded the members of Christmas in Killarney with the prestigious Best Christmas Business Town in Ireland, for the most innovative ideas to encourage people to shop locally. The 2016 Christmas in Killarney festival promises to be better than ever. “The

aim of the 2016 Christmas in Killarney festival is to focus on turning Killarney town centre into a magical wonderland for families through decoration and lighting with a select number of events sprinkled into the mix,” said a spokesperson. A thrilling Christmas events calendar has also been planned offering almost six weeks of festive events and activities. There will also be a wide range of events which will focus on raising money for various charities and providing Christmas cheer to local groups. “The Christmas in Killarney Committee would like to thank all our sponsors for their continued support,” said the spokesperson. “Killarney is the perfect place to spend time and celebrate with family and friends in the run-up to Christmas 2016, so be sure to come and join us for some festive fun!” Frozen's Anna and Elsa are driven in style during last year's Christmas in Killarney parade. Set Dancing WeekenD 18th - 20th november mallow road, Lissivigeen, killarney.

Organising the perfect christmas party DON’T be daunted by the prospect of organising a Christmas party. Whether you have been tasked with co-ordinating your work do, or want to organise a get-together for friends or family, now is the ideal time to get out that pen and paper and start planning. Early birds will also avoid the disappointment of unavailable venues and the prospect of leading a less-than-merry band of revellers around the streets in search of party central! First off, nail down the date. Consult everyone involved as to which dates they are available and, if it is a work function, try to find out the optimum day of the week for the event. For instance, Friday nights might work best because colleagues won't have work the next day or alternatively this might be a no go as it eats into their weekend. Finalise a total budget for the event and confirm the number of guests – have in mind a minimum and maximum number of guests who will attend. The right venue is key – consider what type of venue most suits your team; a hotel, unique venue, marquee, bar or nightclub? Location is also crucial – would you like the venue walking distance from your office or are you willing to travel slightly further? It is also important to consider where most people will be travelling back to at the end of the night to make sure the location is convenient and ensure maximum attendance. The party atmosphere is another key consideration – do you require a formal sit-down dinner followed by dancing or maybe more of a party atmosphere focusing on drinking and dancing?

Fun festive options YOUR Christmas party – whether with your colleagues, friends or family – can take many forms. Why not try a few different fun options for size? If it’s a girlie affair, then a festive afternoon tea should fit the bill. Also along the feelgood line is a spa day, which should go well with bon viveurs of all ages. This might be combined with a fabulous Yuletide lunch. Finally, you don’t have to stray from home to enjoy a mini-break – consider a package that allows you to feast on fine food and enjoy an overnight stay, complete with that essential breakfast in bed the morning after!

Picking the perfect party venue CHRISTMAS PARTIES come in all shapes and sizes and whether you are organising a cosy get-together for a select few or planning a larger do, the venue is key to its success. Now is an ideal time to check out what all venues have to offer. Killarney is in the enviable position of offering a whole host of venues to choose from, to suit all sizes of parties. Most venues offer bespoke packages tailored to your precise requirements. After reviewing the proposal and what is included in each package, shortlist the venues offered. This can be a fun part of party planning. It is a good idea to view the venues you are interested in as soon as possible, venues will not hold dates endlessly over the Christmas period therefore, it is best to move quickly on this. When viewing the venues remember to bring the proposal with you so you can check what the package includes at each venue.

Wellbeing takes centre stage at Gaelscoil

ONE of the largest crowds to attend a meeting in Gaelscoil Faithleann turned up to hear Dr Fergus Heffernan discuss how to better understand well-being for themselves and their families during the week. Organised by the Gaelscoil Parents Council, an audience of more than 150 people heard Dr Heffernan say that, “Anxiety is at the heart of all of our problems and what we are all looking for is a place to belong and feel connected and listened too”. He feels that we are passing on anxiety to our children with pressure to perform well and also involvement in a multitude of activities, with little downtime. Dr Heffernan said: “Children must learn to make mistakes, they must learn about loss and grieving, as otherwise they won’t learn to cope or build resilience. He feels two after-school activities are enough for children to be involved with, as they need free time, and they also can learn to opt out at an early age when overloaded.” He added: “Our aim should be for them to leave school with a good sense of who they are, and to be proud of themselves, and the inner knowledge that they can get anywhere if they take their time.” Mary Carroll, secretary of the Gaelscoil Parents Council, described the evening as “positive and reflective”. “Events like this really add to the community of our school,” she said.

ELECTROLYSIS FOR HAIR REMOVAL

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains the process of electrolysis

ELECTROLYSIS is a method of removing individual hairs from the face. Apilus electrolysis devices destroy the growth centre of the hair with chemical or heat energy. After a very fine probe is inserted into the hair follicle, (natural opening of the skin) the hair is removed with tweezers. There are generally no permanent side effects, but sometimes a temporary, slight reddening of the skin may occur. As well as dark hair, blonde, red and grey hair are all suitable for Electrolysis. When Electrolysis is done correctly, most people find that it's comfortable. Many ask whether there is much skin reaction. The skin becomes a little red immediately after the treatment and this disappears after about one hour. Your therapist will advise you on aftercare treatment, this is an important feature of the treatment and ensures minimal skin

reaction. We specialise in Apilus electrolysis. Apilus offers advanced technology with proven effectiveness in the field of hair removal and have demonstrated time and again that Apilus delivers more effective and more comfortable treatments as well as much more rapid permanent results than any other hair removal technique. Apilus is equipped with a unique “tolerance test”, which allows the unit to be adjusted and adapted to your level of sensitivity to the current. Apilus high-precision circuitry uses application pulses as short as one hundredth, or even one thousandth of a second, which assures incomparable comfort. Electrolysis is still the only permanent method of hair removal today despite claims from other methods. Book a consultation at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio today and start your journey to being hair-free. Consultations are free; call 064-6632966

Margo to take centre stage in the INEC

IRISH country music legend Margo O’Donnell has legions of fans across Ireland and her concerts in Killarney have always resulted in full houses. An it will be a night of nostalgia, joy and no doubt some tears when Margo and her band will say goodbye to her many fans and friends from Killarney, Kerry and beyond at her concert in the INEC on Friday, October 28 (during the bank holiday weekend). Margo has thought long and hard about this over the years and knew at some stage it had to happen. It all started for Margo back in 1968 when, at a very young age, she and her band The Keynotes recorded a song called Bonny Irish Boy.

Margo who will be performing in the INEC on October 28.

The song made it to number 10 in the Irish charts. A year later, Margo was

back in the charts again with the song The Road By The River, which made it to number two. The hits continue to this day. Margo toured the United States and the UK and when on her first visit to the Galtymore Hotel in Cricklewood in London she was met by police on horseback. Margo asked her manager what was wrong, to be told: “They are here because of you, they are here to control the crowds.” Over the years, Margo played many venues throughout Kerry like the Ring Ballroom in Sneem, The Astor in Castleisland, and Killarney Town Hall, where she played to another re-

cord-breaking crowd. “I hope you can come along and I will get to meet up with you after the concert,” said Margo on her website. “Looking back over the years I realise I have been blessed with my wonderful career and I have loads of memories to last me a lifetime. The one great blessing I have is peace and that I treasure.” Margo will be supported at her concert in the INEC by PJ Murrihy who will play for the dance afterwards in the ballroom. Doors open at 7.30pm with PJ onstage at 8.15pm.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK CRÈME BRÛLÉE Dingle Cookery School’s head chef Mark Murphy shares this delicious recipe for an after-dinner treat

INGREDIENTS 600ml cream Vanilla pods 10 egg yolks 60g caster sugar plus 100g for glaze METHOD Preheat oven to 150 degrees Celsius. Put cream in a pot with vanilla and bring to a gentle boil. Meanwhile mix the egg yolks and sugar together, add the cream then pass it through a sieve. Place this mixture in a ramekin, put in a tray and place water around ramekins until it comes up on three-quarters of the ramekins. Cook for 30 minutes until the custard has set – a gentle shake should determine this; if the custard wobbles put it back in the oven for 3 another five minutes. Allow to cool. To serve, place sugar over the custard and use a blowtorch to caramelise the sugar. This recipe serves eight.

Grace Notes Singing from experience

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on how important it is to provide an emotional experience for your audience

WHEN I was a young college student I once heard someone say, “You can't sing about love until you have had your heart broken and you cannot sing of grief until you have lost someone.” I didn't agree with this statement at the time. I believed that if you can act you should have the ability to portray any emotion. I thought that surely any good singer should be able to “play the role” of the heartbroken or grieving person.

Now that I am older and, hopefully, wiser, I feel completely differently. Now when I sing about heartbreak

and loss I can feel a very deep and real pain as I tap into my memories and emotions. I must clarify that when “pain” is raw and fresh it can have quite a negative impact on a singer. Pain that is very current can claw at the throat and abdomen, making singing quite difficult to do. It is the job of the singer to merely convey feelings, not to get caught up in them while singing. If we make the audience feel something, it is usually because we too have felt that emotion and have delved into it while working on a particular song or work. Some-

times I hear people say they were “left cold” by a particular performer and I too have felt that way on a number of occasions. Sometimes no matter how amazing a voice is, it can lack a certain human quality and I believe that this is because the singer is not singing the song from a place of real emotion. I know there have been times that I myself have struggled with a song and so many times I realised that I was simply feeling nothing while I sang. A singer should not be an empty vessel that creates a beautiful sound. A singer should make you feel something, even if you have no idea why. A human listening to another human is such a basic part of life and yet it can be so powerful. Next time you listen to a singer, check if your heart is listening too. •Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 18:1-8: The purpose of prayer is not to change God’s mind, but to change ourselves; and we can be slow to move. When have you found that persistence in prayer strengthened your faith in the presence of God with you in that struggle? The context of the story may be a concern about the delay in the final coming of the Lord. Have there been times when your persistence in prayer, or action, was eventually rewarded after a period when you had doubts about the outcome? What were the fruits of your persistent prayer? Behind the story lies the final question of Jesus: Who does have faith? Who have been models of faith and trust in God for you? How has that trust been shown in their lives? How is it shown in yours? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

Importance of support

SUPPORT – it’s an important word in our vocabulary today and very much so in our families. Where would any of us be without the support of the family which is the bedrock of society? Moses had his family, the Israelites of old, and note how they supported him, holding his hands on high, as he interceded for his people when they were engaged in defending the people. No cameras to record it, but what a sight it must have been and a wonderful family story. We had a wonderful summer of sport this year. We had the thrills and spills of the European Cup, the Olympics and the GAA Championship. Our sportsmen and women did us proud and themselves too. Everybody wants to bask in the glory of coming out as number one. Only one can make it to the top and yet can we recall the frequency with which we secretly, or openly shouted: “God, O God, can they make it?” God, O God: I wonder is He always listening! Could he ever be akin to the unjust judge, who even though, apparently, not interested in the dear old lady in the gospel story, granted her request to get her, as it were, “out of his hair”. I wonder did he still have hair and how long was the widow pestering him. Isn’t this how it is in some families? In the time of large families, it was noticed that younger members easily got what they wanted, their first disco, holidays away from the family, etc., in comparison with the struggle the first members of the family had to endure. Even parents give way to pressure perhaps because of weariness or it could be that they too acquire wisdom over the years. Being human and trying to communicate with a divine being we use human concepts and the God we call on is sometimes likened to a parent who could possibly know what is best for the children. He may be slow in responding and we wonder why. Is the Almighty mind being changed or is it my request that is being modified? Sheila Crowe

God does not need reminding

I HAVE just paused to notice my breathing. The heart is working away. Both are steady and normal. The normality almost deadens my awareness of God’s creative presence giving me life with all its blessings, opportunities, challenges and difficulties. It sometimes takes the absence of one of His gifts to alert us to our total dependence on God. In times of crisis, we pleadingly voice our needs, even our panic, with a persistence that seems discourteous to our benefactor. This persistence in intercessory prayer is strongly encouraged by Jesus in this weekend’s Gospel. There, the carefully crafted parable has a deeper message than just bullying God into changing his mind. God does not need reminding, but we do. Highlighting our needs is a reminder of all we have received. Such remembering evokes gratitude that leads to praise and worship culminating in happiness. Jesus does not explain the parable. He expects us to mine it. Some miners find diamonds. Fr Tom Clancy

The Provocateur SHEEP SEEM TO MATTER MORE THAN CARERS MIDDLE Ireland is angry and middle Ireland has a right to be angry. Do we really live in a supposedly just society where, as Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe said, “no one gets left behind”? First of all, the much-vaunted housing package unveiled in Tuesday’s Budget doesn’t seem to me to be designed to serve as an aid first-time buyers. The public immediately spotted that it looks like a ploy to help builders, not the squeezed middle. The help-to-buy scheme will allow firsttime buyers to claim a rebate of €20,000 on new-build properties. Why only apply it to new-builds? I feel this will do very little to help increasingly desperate house-hunters get a foot on the property ladder and will only benefit developers. The scheme does not address the housing supply crisis. And I am all for animal rights, but a ludicrous aspect of this Budget is the fact that in it, sheep seem to matter more than carers. I agree with Green Party leader Eamon Ryan who noted how the increase in the home carers’ grant is less than a quarter of the additional allocation given for sheep welfare. The home carers’ tax credit is to increase by €100, bringing it up to €1,100 and this credit can be claimed by couples who are married or in a civil partnership where one spouse cares for one or more child in the home, or an over-65 or disabled person. Minister for Children Katherine Zappone’s new childcare plan, meanwhile, has been slated as unfair to stay-at-home parents, with parents who do not use crèches furious at being discriminated against under the new scheme. Some 240,000 homemakers with children said they would miss out on the new €80 a week “universal” payment for children aged from six months to three years. This sector will also not be eligible for up to €8,000 a year in childcare subsidies which are targeted at low-income families, but only those whose children are in specific childcare facilities. HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY WEEKLY ROUND-UP ROUND-UP OF OF NEWS NEWS + + A WAKE-UP CALL... Of course we suspected something was wrong when Donald Trump wasn’t releasing details of his tax affairs. Could it be possible that he didn’t pay taxes at all? But, sure that would be impossible because he was so rich he’d have to have a liability. However, having been told before that only the little people pay taxes, anything could be possible. Still, it’s still hard to come to terms with the huge losses this self-acclaimed successful businessman created. The New York Times claims The Donald racked up losses so huge in the early 1990s that he wouldn’t have had to pay federal or New York State income tax on nearly a billion dollars in income. Compare that with the average American who pay their taxes and try to make ends meet. It’s hard to imagine a more damning indictment of a tax code that makes that possible. Throughout all this, he sustained a lifestyle of lavish homes, private jets, country clubs and golf

courses; even as he was using the tax code to avoid paying any federal income tax. “If it wasn’t clear before, it is now: The tax code is tilted toward the rich in its statutory framework, its exceptions, and in how it is enforced and administered,” said Steven M. Rosenthal, a real estate tax specialist and senior fellow at the UrbanBrookings Tax Policy Center. “The American public,” he said, “needs to wake up and send a message that the tax code should be written to generate revenue and enforced to collect it, not to favor wealthy real estate developers and other special interests and their lobbyists.” If Mr. Trump’s pattern of generating losses and using them to offset other income has continued, as seems likely, it’s obvious why he has not released his tax returns: not because he is being audited, or because the returns are too complicated, but because he hasn’t paid any taxes.

Golden moment for Gleneagle Group THE Gleneagle Group has won a prestigious gold award at the 2016 Irish Responsible Tourism Awards. The Killarney-based hotel group scooped the award in the Best Accessible and Inclusive Tourism category at the awards ceremony which took place in Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Dublin last week. The Irish Responsible Tourism Awards are designed to celebrate those making a difference in Ireland and using tourism to benefit local communities, economies and the environment. The awards are linked to the World Responsible

Tourism Awards, and the winners of each of the categories have now qualified for the world awards. “We are currently rolling out a detailed accessibility plan and working towards creating a welcoming environment for all,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, managing director of The Gleneagle Group. “This award is a credit to the accessibility team here and their hard work and accomplishments to date. Our accessibility plan is very much a work in progress and we are fully committed to it.” The awards attracted entries from almost every county in Ireland.

VIEWS FROM FROM KERRY KERRY AND AND AROUND AROUND THE THE WORLD WORLD VIEWS MNÁ NA HÉIREANN/MNÁ MHEIRICEÁ Donald Trump is hurting after recent revelations exposed his cave-man like views on women. At a campaign event in Pennsylvania, he threatened to expand attacks against Hillary Clinton and her husband if more damning recordings of the Republican presidential nominee are released. “If they want to release more tapes saying inappropriate things, we’ll continue to talk about Bill and Hillary Clinton doing inappropriate things. There are so many of them, folks,” he said. It would seem that both candidates are in a race to the bottom and soon there won’t be anyone left standing. Mr Trump shoots himself in the foot every time he opens his mouth and he is paying the price and he knows it but he seems to be bent on hurting Mrs Clinton so much there won’t be any credible piece left of her. Trump offended not just women but humanity with his gross talk and then offended every person who ever used a locker-room that his insulting and degrading remarks against women was just ‘locker-room’ talk. It wasn’t. I’ve been in a share of locker rooms in my time and I never, ever, heard anything like what Trump claims goes on there. Sure there might be an over-powering whiff of Old Spice to boost the ageing egos or of Winter Green Cream which is used extensively for the symptomatic relief of muscular pains, lumbago, rheumatic pain, fibrositis and strains but generally the atmosphere is relaxed, cordial friendly and courteous. There may be a bit of good-humoured banter but never anything naughty or bold. Mr Trump would do well to remember Mná

na h Éireann. When the call went out they rallied and won. And this brings me to the Budget. Why isn’t proper recognition given to the homemakers? Every socio-economic grouping gets mentioned in the Budget except the person who decides to devote himself/herself to keeping a home and raising a family. It is as if these people don’t exist. They are never mentioned or never receive assistance of any kind. Yet, they work the hardest of all. They don’t have recognised working hours, pay or conditions. They never strike and they are multi-talented and always multi-tasking. They cook, wash, sew, iron, advise, console, encourage and keep going day and night. Yet they don’t even get recognition from the State. This is especially true when, in the autumn of their lives, they are granted a non-contributory pension emphasising what the State thinks of their contribution. Basically these mothers/fathers/husbands/ wives partners who stay at home to keep the home and family together have made no contribution. Indeed, it’s often the case that some of these partners get nothing at all; no pension whatsoever. Because they have stayed at home and made no contributions they are means-tested and if their spouses’ pension or income is above a certain level, they get nothing, nada. Partners of teachers, Gardaí and others who have occupational pensions are not entitled to a pension in their own right. That’s not fair. We can talk and talk about ending discrimination but until such time that the home-makers of Ireland are recognised for the contribution they make it’s just talk.

Increased level of activity at University Hospital Kerry UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL KERRY is reporting an increased level of activity and the hospital is advising that nonurgent patients may now experience significant delays. Hospital management is requesting that, where appropriate, the public contact their GP in the first instance and explore all other options available to them prior to attending the Emergency Department if their needs are not urgent. “The hospital would also like to take this opportunity to assure the public and service users that every effort is being made to address this situation,” according to a statement from the hospital. “Patient care is paramount in UHK and the situation is being managed as a priority and reviewed on an ongoing basis.''

Donohue to ask Ministers to forego €12,000 pay boost after public backlash GOVERNMENT MINISTERS may not be getting a pay rise out of the Budget after all. They had been due to get a €12,000 boost over the next three years as part of a pay restoration deal. However, Public Expenditure Minister Pascal Donohoe is to ask them to waive the rise after public outcry. The Irish Independent claims that Ministers’ pay is to be frozen at €157,000, with no increases next year. Ministers would have been due a pay rise of €3,911 on April 1.

Garden Magic TIME TO TAKE STOCK October is a month of harvest and preparation, says Debby Looney AS THE days grow shorter and colder, it is easy to ignore the garden, or think there is nothing to do. However, there are plenty of jobs to be done, and if planted well, there is plenty to see in your garden. My two favourite plants at this time of year are Euonymus Europaeus and Sorbus Joseph’s Rock. The foliage on both is absolutely spectacular. The Euonymus has unequalled scarlet leaves at the moment, and the Sorbus, as all Mountain Ashes, stands out in the crowd. They are both hardy, do not mind wind and rain, like our acidic soil and are beautiful year-round. The Euonymus is great planted as a hedge, or on its own. Early October is a time when you can do a lot of good for your lawn. Scarification will be of great benefit to your grass. Using a spring-tined rake, rake

out the thatch, (all the dead grass and moss which lurks underneath your green grass). Aerate the lawn using a fork, or, if you have a wet lawn, a hollow tined fork. Fill in the plugs you lift with a mixture of loam, sand and compost, (3:6:1). If moss is a problem, use lawnsand to address this (Vitax lawn sand has a proven record). Use an autumn lawn feed to strengthen your grass and its roots for the wet season ahead, and, believe me, you will see the results next spring! If it is from your sofa you are gardening, take note of plants that did well for you, or where you would like to make a change in your garden. Start looking at all the seed catalogues which are appearing, now is the time to plan!

THE Killeen House Hotel and Rozzers Restaurant in Killarney, recently voted Ireland’s best three-star establishment, has been put on the market. The hotel, comprising 23 guest bedrooms, is currently rated as number three of 102 hotels in Kerry on TripAdvisor with the attached Rozzers Restaurant being rated as the best restaurant in Killarney and number two of 526 restaurants in Kerry overall. It has also achieved a 9.5/10 rating on Booking.com, classified as “exceptional”. Its current owners, Michael and Geraldine Rosney, have established an excellent reputation for Killeen House over the past 25 years. Specialist business property company Christie and Co, who are handling the sale, said: “The Killeen House Hotel and Rozzers Restaurant is a beautifully-presented property with a very well-deserved reputation as one of the best hotels and restaurants in the entire Kerry region. “It presents prospective purchasers

with a very strong and well-established trading business with potential to lengthen the trading season, as well as extend the property subject to planning permission”. Due to the considerable amount of investment that the site has received over the past decade, it will need no major investment in the foreseeable future. Michael Rosney said: “Geraldine and I have worked hard over the last quarter century to create a very unique hospitality product and we are very proud of where we have brought the Killeen House to in that period.” He added: “For a variety of different reasons, we feel now is the right time to put it on the market and we look forward to seeing the next chapter in the life and times of the Killeen House unfolding in the years to come.” Killeen House Hotel and Rozzers Restaurant is offered for sale with a guide price in excess of €1.95 million.

A RATHER SPECIAL DELIVERY THESE days, many racecar liveries are uninspiring monochrome uniforms rather than expressionist works of art. The Seventies where some other “creative forces” helped inspire wacky, colourful paint jobs. Some of the best were slapped onto racing Porsches. Google the Porsche

917/20 ‘Pink Pig’, or ‘Hippie’ Porsche 917-021 to see. One of the others was the Jagermeister Racing scheme worn by all manner of Porsches and BMWs throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The one you see here is an orange streamlined Porsche RSR 3.0 from

1974. It’s powered by a 330-horsepower six-cylinder boxer engine and has the sort of unparalleled stance that makes you involuntarily fold over and go "oooof". You may be wondering why it’s being off-loaded from a plane. No, someone didn’t decide to take it on

holiday. Instead, Eckhard Schimpf, former team manager and racer for Jagermeister racing in the seventies decided to buy his race car back from someone in the US and bring it home to Germany. On a plane. Makes for quite a cool photo, don’t you think?

2017 Land Rover Discovery LAND ROVER debuted its fifth-generation 2017 Discovery at the recent Paris Motor Show. The sleek premium SUV, which replaces the Discovery four, will seat five or up to seven with the three-row option. The new Discovery is built with lighter aluminium construction, which reduces body weight by nearly 450kg in comparison to the outgoing model, and yet it can tow up to 3,500kg with an advanced tow assist feature. In addition, the Discovery has 82.7 cu. ft. of storage space and individually heated seats. The new Discovery SUV will be powered by either a supercharged V6 petrol or turbocharged diesel engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Discovery’s latest Terrain Response system features an increase in wading depth to more than 890mm, handy for the school run. In addition, communication connectivity has been enhanced in the new Discovery with up to nine USB ports, 12-volt charging points, and a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices. Land Rover says the new Discovery will also feature premium interiors that are made of durable, high-quality materials, including Windsor leather and oak veneer trim. An optional Dynamic Design Pack provides extra appearance features with a contrasting colour roof, more athletic front and rear bumper designs, luxury leather upholstery, and a sports steering wheel and pedals.

Firies GAA Club member going to the dogs A DRAMATICALLY expanding East Kerry GAA club, Firies is set to go to the dogs in a bid to create a field of dreams. The club is planning a night out at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium in Tralee on October 22 to raise funds for the development of phase one of its second pitch in Ballyvarrig, Firies. The club has purchased over seven acres near the heart of Firies village with the intention of developing the land as a juvenile football pitch, along with dressing rooms, and car park facilities. This proposed development is a direct response by the club to the sharp rise in numbers in the juvenile age groups and to cater for the future of this expanding club. A working group of Firies GAA members has been tasked with organising a fun-packed race night on October 22 in Kingdom Greyhound Race Track

in order to kick-start phase one. Frances Henderson, representing the working group, said: “We have approached many different organisations within our community and further afield and thankfully, the response has gone far beyond our expectations. This is indeed a community effort to kick-start the vision and it is uplifting to see the community supporting the GAA.” Frances added: “Our Coiste na nÓg age groups have being growing from strength to strength and we also cater for our young hurlers, which is very popular with our juvenile groups." Bridie Breen, chairperson of Firies GAA, said the club is grateful to all who have donated so generously. "People’s generosity and support of the club has always been very strong within our GAA family but since

the news of this exciting proposal, our club has been has been overwhelmed with open-handedness from the Firies diaspora overseas as well as our own homestead advocates from the parishes of Firies, Farranfore and Ballyhar which en-

U17 F.A.I Cup Killarney Athletic 2 Askeaton 2 (Athletic won 5-4 on penalties) This was a strange cup tie in many ways with Athletic racing into a two nil lead with goals from two of our new signings, but to be fair it could have been 4 or 5. Athletic sat back and allowed the Limerick boys back into the game and they scored before the break with good goal. The second half started with Askeaton on top and they equalised midway through the half and looked the more likely to go on and win the game, but the drama was only beginning. Athletic had two players sent off in the next ten minutes and finished the game with 9 players. Extra time facing a nine man Athletic but they gave everything , with everyone playing with heart when the legs were tiring and held on for a penalty shootout which we won with five immaculate penalties to go through to the next round, what a result. U15 Our u15 team went down to park on Saturday after putting in a solid first half. We hit the post and crossbar in this half and were playing reasonably good. Park applied big pressure in 2nd half and pulled away from us in the end. Overall a solid performance against a top Park side. U13B Division 2 Killarney Athletic 1-4 Inter Kenmare. Much better performance from the boys. We should have had 2 or 3more goals. Good performances from Dara Looney, Conal Gallagher, Aidan Courtney and a first goal for Thomas O’Reilly. New Players Wanted While Killarney Celtic always welcome new players at all grades and take pride in providing top quality coaching in a fun and supportive environment right from U6 up to Munster Champions Cup standard, we are especially anxious at the moment to find numbers to bolster our U12 Girls Panel, which is just short at the moment of enough players to fulfill a yearly league schedule. One or two more players would really make a huge difference and we would ask that any girls interested in playing to come to one of our training sessions on Mondays at 6.00pm – you would be more than welcome! Results Munster Junior Cup: Castleisland 1 Killarney Celtic 3 Celtic maintained their great run of form in the early stages of the Munster Junior Cup with a convincing away win against Castleisland – always a daunting task against a quality home side. Joe Hurley and Cathal O’Shea with a brace made the vital breakthroughs. Denny Premier B: Athletic AC 7 Killarney Celtic 1 Celtic gave it everything but full credit to AC Athletic, they were outstanding and won well. Presley Dube scored a cracking goal for us, but it was scant enough consolation. U17 League: St. Brendans Park 1 Killarney Celtic 3 Park were unlucky to cough up an o.g., Evan Jones put us in front, and an injury time goal for Celtic secured victory in a hard-fought and entertaining game. U15 National Cup: Abbeyfeale 1 Killarney Celtic 4 Celtic were superb here against a good, organised side, where Celtic’s ability to switch play and find each swiftly was a key part of breaking them down defensively. The Hoops goals came from Emmet Finnan, James Darmody, Jack O’Connor and Ruairi Doyle. U15 Division Two: Killarney Celtic B 0 Rattoo Rovers 4 It was a very gallant effort by an understrength Celtic but Rattoo, to their credit, were always a touch better and deserved their win. U13 Division One: Castleisland 0 Killarney Celtic 9 Killarney Celtic proved a bit too strong for Castleisland and took the three points thanks to goals from John Kelliher and Senan O’Leary who got a hattrick each with Sean Fitzgerald, William Harty and Calum Grady all on target as well. U13 Division Two: Killarney Celtic B 7 Ballyheigue 2 Killarney Celtic B took the points winning 6-2 at home to Ballyheigue. PAST CAPTAIN PAT CUSSEN WINS THE PAST CAPTAIN’S PRIZE. Past Captain from 2011, Pat Cussen won the past Captain’s prize when he was victorious in that competition which was played on the 8th of October. His score of 36 points was the clear winner in the competition which was contested by 16 of our former captains. 2nd was Jack Buckley the Captain from 2009, and he just pipped Tim O’Meara who was Captain in 2008 on a last three holes count-back. At the dinner later that evening Club Captain Liam Hartnett welcomed 18 former Captains, including Ivo O O’Sullivan who got a special mention as it is 50 years since he was the Captain of our Club in 1966, a great year for our Club, as it was the year when Taoiseach Sean Lemass opened our new Clubhouse, and saw the playing of the Jeyes Pro-Am Tournament. The competition on Sunday the 9th of October was a four-ball better-ball competition. The competition which was hotly contested, was played on Killeen course in glorious weather conditions. A full time sheet ensured that the scoring would be hot, but when the early morning pairing of Eugene O’Sullivan and Padraig Sweeney finished birdie birdie, for a great score of 45 points, it was thought that would be a winning score, but not to be, in fact they finished in third place as their score was even bettered by two further pairings, and the competition was won by Sean Hickey and George Lenihan with the fantastic score of 46 points and they won by virtue of a better back nine from the equally fantastic

same score by Russell Fleming and Declan O’Sullivan. Results are as follows. 1st Sean Hickey (19) and George Lenihan(12) 46 points 2nd Russell Fleming (7) and Declan O’Sullivan(16) 46 points 3rd Eugene O’Sullivan (4) and Padraig Sweeney(8) 45 points 4th John O’Connor (10) and Daniel Doona(10) 43 points 5th Brian Clarke (11) and John Lynch (11) 43 points 6th Marco Taddei (12) and Greg Lanigan (4) 43 points. Men’s Club AGM set for Friday the 21st at 7.30pm, it will be held at the Clubhouse.

Killarney RFC

U14: Killarney RFC 36 - 10 Castleisland Tries by Liam Randles, Tomas Clifford, Padraic Talbot and Brendy O’Donoghue gave the home side a well deserved win over our neighbours Castleisland in the first round of the West Munster league, with 3 conversions from Donnacha Grealy sealing the win for our boys. An excellent start to the season with everyone really stepping up to the plate to win the match. Pictured below with coaches Seamus Grealy, John O’Connell and Eoin Seery. Next up is a trip to O’Dowd Park to take on Tralee next Saturday. New players are more than welcome. Training takes place every Thursday at 6:15. The U 14’s are building a really strong squad under Seamus, John and Eoin and are looking for more players to come and join. Training takes place every Thursday evening from 6:15pm and all new players are more than welcome. U16’s: Killarney Under 16s team travelled to Abbeyfeale on Sunday, for our first round game of the season v Abbeyfeale, with the bare number of fifteen players, due to a few late withdrawals, this meant that several key positions were filled with players unaccustomed to their task. Not the ideal season opener. As expected Abbeyfeale, were intense and physical, with many of their squad former U14 league winners from last season. Several uncharacteristic handling errors cost Killarney dearly, as Abbeyfeale dominated, especially at the breakdown. Killarney’s scrum and line-out held its own, and there were some periods when they managed parity at the breakdown, with some phases of good play. With Abbeyfeale’s strong substitutes bench, Killarney simply ran out of gas. This is still a young & relatively inexperienced team, and this match will stand to them later in the season, no doubt. Well done to Krystian Komosa, who scored two excellent tries from deep, well done also to Richard Wallace who captained the side. Final score Abbeyfeale 28 - Killarney 14. Next up its Charleville at home at Aghadoe. All support greatly welcome. U18: Killarney RFC 10 - 25 Rugbaí Corcha Dhuibhne Our U18’s had their first outing in the Munster Club U18 Conference 4. Our solitary try was scored by Alan Murphy and converted by Kieran O’Connor - who also converted penalty award. A plucky performance from an inexperienced Killarney side against strong Corca Dhuibhne team well worth their victory. Killarney kept going to the end and inspirational Captain Dylan McCa-

rthy lead from the front. Great to see Killarney RFC fielding an U18 team. Pictured are our U18’s with coaches Pat F. O’Connor and Denis Reen. Next up is a trip to Charleville next weekend. Again the U18’s are building a great squad and all new players are welcome. Training takes place every Wednesday at 6:30pm. Minis: Our minis continue to train every Saturday morning between 10:30 am and midday. The dates of the West Munster Minis Blitzes have been finalised. We will have our first blitz in Listowel on Saturday the 29th of October. Details will be confirmed over the next few days so, keep posted to our facebook page. We need to ensure that we have all details of all players, so please let us know if you are not receiving texts. Minis Registration day: Next Saturday we will have a membership and registration day at Aghadoe during our minis training for all minis players left to register. The cost is only €60 per player or family membership is available at €130, which is fantastic value for 2 adults and all kids in a family. We need to get all players registered as soon as possible and the cut off date is the end of October. All players need to be paid up to ensure they are covered by insurance and to ensure they can take part in blitzes etc. We will have a draw for all paid up players for two Munster tickets in a few weeks. So, come along on Saturday and we will see you there. Any queries, contact Minis coordinator Liam Murphy on (087) 4145662.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club

This weekend we will gather in the International Hotel on Saturday night to award the successful competitive anglers that earned their accolades through the course of the 2016 season and no doubt discuss, dwell on and bemoan the fleeting glimpses of trout that didn’t take but if they did the difference they would have

made ! Our Annual Competition on Lough Lein was fished on Sunday the 02nd of October and a good entry of anglers took to the lake for the day , with many seasoned hands taking part and showing their prowess. At the telling point of the weigh in shed past the hour of 6pm , the rod of Tim O’Connor was clearly ahead on the catches and Tim will be awarded the Royal Oak Cup this weekend as a result. The top five rods were as follows: 1) Tim O’Connor 2) Tom Dennehy 3) Owen Casey 4) Steve Campbell 5) Thomas Depping The heaviest fish on the day fell to the rod of Thomas Depping. The Dynamic duo of Steve Cambell and Tom Dennehy were once again able to claim the Paddy Kelly Cup for the best boat on the day and with the final competition weighed in, the Heaviest Trout of 2016, for which the John Mannix Cup is awarded, was claimed by Liam Buckley. After consulting the draw sheet with the competition results, the team of Brendan O’Sullivan, Tim O’Connor and Tom Dennehy was the clear winner. In the club teams section, the winning team consisted of the following anglers Joe Murphy, DJ O Riordan, Tom Dennehy and Tim O’Connor. While all the focus is on the trout anglers presently, a quick reminder to the salmon anglers as they too stow away their gear - do not forget to return your completed log books and get a certificate of posting for same.

Irish High Performance Squad of the 2016 season. It was so exciting to be racing alongside our Olympic heroes Sanita Puspure and Paul and Gary O’Donovan. The water was like glass all weekend and the dense fog on Sunday morning did nothing to mar the sights that these young rowers have for a bright future of rowing ahead of them. Many thanks to our coaches Mickey Joe Burns and Hannah Majella O’Donoghue for their Trojan work all weekend and not forgetting the ‘management team’ of Leona Brown and Marc Woodard ! Dr Crokes bid for Kerry glory in the Fitzgerald Stadium Eamonn Fitzgerald previews the weekend in sport THE Garveys Supervalu senior football championship final between Dr Crokes and Kenmare District has been fixed for Killarney's Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday next, October 16, at 3.30pm. It will be preceded by the Castleisland Mart junior premier football championship final between Na Gaeil and Glenbeigh-Glencar at 1.30pm. Last Sunday’s senior semi-finals saw Dr Crokes defeat Dingle by 1-15 to 0-15 and Kenmare District defeat Rathmore by 0-20 to 0-19.

OTHER FIXTURES The Castleisland Mart junior football championship final between Fossa and Beale has been fixed for Austin Stack Park on tomorrow at 4pm. The Acorn Life Under 21 hurling championship final between Lixnaw and St Brendan’s has been fixed for Abbeydorney on tomorrow at 4pm.

DR CROKES VERSUS KENMARE There were nail-biting finishes to last Sunday’s semi-finals in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Kenmare just held on by the narrowest of margins as Rathmore very nearly got a Shane Ryan goal late in time added on. At the other end Kenmare saw two goalbound shots come off the uprights in the same period. Kenmare survived to book a place in the final for the first time in 29 years. They were dominant in the first half with wing back Patrick Clifford very prominent soloing up field to score. Adrian Spillane was also prominent as was the ever-reliable scorer Paul O Connor who ended up as top scorer on seven points, four of these from play. In the second half the game seemed to have gone away from Rathmore trailing by six points, but they hung in there with their customary grit and determination and drew level in the 58th minute as the Kenmare men went out of the game. This was Rathmore’s best period and the odds now favoured Rathmore. It was 18 points each at this

Currow Coiste Na nÓg

U16s: Currow travelled to Kilcummin on Wednesday 5th October to play the hosts in a East Kerry Championship Semi final. In a very close and exciting game the two teams couldn’t be separated after the 60 minutes and the game finished level on a score line of Kilcummin 4-14 to Currow’s 5-11. The two teams will play each other again in the replay on Sunday 16th October in Currow at 11:30am. U12s: Currow u12 team concluded their season on Monday 3rd October with an away game vs Rathmore. Played in wet conditions Rathmore proved to have the upper hand on their opponents and went on to win on a score line of Rathmore 5-09 to Currow’s 4-05. Well done to team

stage. Adrian Spillane scored a valuable point – one of three in a fine display. However it comes as a cost as he pulled a hamstring to be replaced at midfield by that great veteran, Flor O’Sullivan. That hamstring injury may well keep Adrian Spillane out of the county final on Sunday. One week is a very short turn around time for a final so time may well prove too tight for the valuable Adrian Spillane. Tadhg Morley was not as prominent as he was in the quarter-final, but he did make his presence felt in those crucial final minutes. Rathmore are great for scoring goals and can count at least five efforts on Sunday last, which did not raise a green flag. Two of these were possible penalty awards, particularly that leg block on Paul Murphy. Hard luck on a gallant Rathmore side, who will now turn their thoughts to the O’Donoghue Cup. John Galvin has done a great job uniting great club rivals Templenoe and Kenmare and he will be well versed on the Croke challenge for the final. He played a central role for Crokes in winning the 1992 All Ireland club title, a teammate of Pat O’Shea the current manager of Dr Crokes. The latter would dearly love to win on Sunday next too. Remember he managed Kerry to a senior All-Ireland title. The rival managers have a great respect for each other’s credentials.

CROKES ADVANCE Crokes had three points to spare in their semi-final v Dingle, but they did not move ahead for victory until they got into time added on. The first half was close enough with Crokes going in at half time leading by nine points to seven after a none-too-impressive first half. Dingle brought it level but conceded a lucky goal to Eoin Brosnan, who had the simple job of poking home a rolling ball to an empty net. With 11 minutes left for play it was and mentors on a good season where Currow won the District B Final and came 2nd in their County Leagues. U6s, U8s, U10s: Saturday morning training has now concluded for this season. Thanks to all players and mentors for their commitment during the course of the season. U16 District Team: Well done to Sean Brosnan and Adam Manley who were on the victorious Castleisland District Team who won the County u16 Championship recently.

Dr Crokes

Senior County Championship Semi Final Dr Crokes 1-15 Dingle 0-15 In a game in which there were never more than three points between the teams we got over the line by three points, in a very

all square with Brendan Kelliher prominent coming up field for Dingle from his centre back position to score. It looked at this stage that Dingle might take the initiative, but Crokes rallied. They can also thank their star goalkeeper Shane Murphy, who made two point blank saves in a man of the match performance. He also scored a point from a 45. Conor Geaney scored four points from frees and 1 from play while Paul Geaney scored three points, even if he was well marked by Crokes’ Mike Moloney. Colm Cooper, Crokes top scorer on four points, three from play and one from a free was sent off late in the game having picked up two cards. Fionn Fitzgerald suffered the same fate in the last minute of time added on.

MATCH-UPS

time secured victory for Kenmare at Crokes expense Kenmare get the nod to bridge that 29-year-old gap on Sunday next. It promises to be a thriller.

MATCH-DAY ARRANGEMENTS John O’Leary, the energetic Kerry GAA PRO reminds us about match arrangements for Sunday next. 1991 county champions Dr Crokes are the Jubilee team and will be introduced to the attendance at half time in the senior game. Tickets for Sunday’s double bill will be available at the ticket buses or may be pre-purchased and are now on sale in participating Centra and Supervalu Stores, including Garveys Supervalu Stores, Kerry County Board office and the Kerry GAA Store in the Outlet Centre in Killarney.

It will be very interesting to see how rival managers will complete the match ups for the final. Gavin White has been very impressive for Crokes so he may well be given a marking role on either Kerry senior and Kenmare captain Stephen O’Brien or Kerry minor captain Sean O Shea. Fionn Fitzgerald will probably pick up Killian Spillane with Mike Moloney marking the free scoring Paul O’Connor. The best Croke midfield pairing for Crokes is the old reliable Johnny Buckley and Ambrose O’Donovan. They should prove too strong for Kerry’s Tadhg Morley and Peter o Shea. Kenmare full back will have his hands full with the inform Daithí Casey. Who will Kenmare put marking Gooch? So many ifs and buts. Kenmare will start as favourites as they have managed a winning tally all season, but Crokes will be hell-bent on becoming champions again. If Kenmare win then Stacks and not Crokes will represent Kerry in the Munster club series. If Crokes win they will of course go on the Munster trail. This will be a very tactical match and here’s hoping for a good refereeing job. On Sunday last Sean Joy had a poor game in charge of Crokes v Dingle, with too many baffling decisions affecting both sides. Pat O’Shea will remember 1987 when a late late Eugene McCarthy goal in extra

JUNIOR FINAL

close and keenly contested encounter. We are going to be playing tough opponents in Kenmare District in next Sundays Final. We will have to improve on our Semi Final performance to bring home Bishop Moynihan Trophy. Rory is a senior hurler with Dr. Crokes and is also involved in juvenile hurling coaching in the club. Lotto Lotto 1, 2, 11, 14. Jackpot €9600. Not won. Next draw on Monday 17th of October in Speakeasy. Jackpot €9900.

The Castleisland Mart Junior Football Championship final will be decided tomorrow, Saturday, at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park where first-time county finalists Fossa will play Beale at 4pm. These two sides have had contrasting fortunes in the senior football league this year with Fossa riding high at the top of Division 3 under new manager John Evans while Beale have been going in the opposite direction being relegated from Division 3. Both teams were in the novice grade last season and went down to opposition a grade higher than them in the junior qualifiers with Fossa losing to Dromid Pearses and Beale going down to Churchill. Both sides recovered well, Fossa defeating West Kerry opposition in Lispole and Castlegregory before accounting for old rivals Scartaglen in the semi final. Beale defeated Cromane and neighbours Asdee and then surprised Division 2 side Listry in the semi-final. With the Con Brosnan Cup up for grabs by the winners this encounter could get the weekend off to a great start. Throw-in is at 4pm and referee is Jer Lynch of Ballymac. Best of luck to Fossa. Wouldn’t the late Fr Galvin be very proud of them?

U10 BOYS Our U10 boys have reached the final stage of their season. These robust troopers are scheduled to travel to a blitz in Mallow, Co Cork on Saturday, 15th October, details of which will be available on our Facebook page this week. The boys had a full-bodied season, overall performing very vigorously and dynamically. We congratulate the boys on all their effort and look forward to seeing the cohort again on our Saturday morning Academy next season. COACHES, MENTORS & VOLUNTEERS On behalf of the club, we would like to sincerely thank all our Saturday morning Academy coaches, mentors and volunteers for their tireless commitment to our under-age players. FIRIES GAA ARE GOING TO THE DOGS Firies GAA are going to the dogs, all literally of course, to raise funds for the development of phase one of their second pitch in Ballyvarrig, Firies. Over seven acres, near the heart of Firies village has been purchased by the expanding East Kerry GAA Club with the intention of developing the land as a juvenile football pitch, along with dressing rooms, and carpark facilities. This proposed development is a direct response by the club to the sharp rise in numbers in the juvenile age groups and to cater for the future of this expanding club. A fun packed race night is on the schedule on October 22nd in Kingdom Greyhound Race Track in order to kick-start phase one. If anyone is interested in supporting this exciting phase of the project, please make contact with our dedicated email; firiesgaanightatthedogs@gmail.com and one of our club officials will make contact with you.

U-12 Girls Our U12 Girls had their East Kerry final this morning, unfortunately Scartaglin came out on top in this one. We are extremely proud of our girls who started their U-12 campaign on April 5th and are U12 County League Champions after a titanic battle

with Scartaglin on June 30th. We are sure they will have many battles with each other over the years to come. Special thanks to Dan, Damien and David for training the girls all year. All the parents for their support and commitment throughout year. Please support the club in the investment for this and future generations. Fashion Show Annual Fashion Show in aid of Fossa Community Centre will be held in Hotel Europe on Wednesday 12th Oct. Fossa Hosts International Soccer Match On Saturday night the Fossa Astro pitch hosted it’s first international soccer match. This was an eight a side contest between Fossa’s finest (over 40s) and Eintracht Hohkeppel from just outside Cologne in Germany. The Germans arrived in good time with great support having taken a walk through the Black Valley as their warm up. Their captain, Micheal Frohlich, presented Mossie Lyons with their team scarf and a keg of their local beer (which didn’t last too long). The game was played in a great spirit and a typical German set up of 3-3-1 was hard to break down at first. But then Jimmy Sheehan found the net after a move up the right. A second came from David Butler and a third from Jimmy Sheehan who was left all on his own to slip it past the isolated German keeper. In the 2nd half Fossa came under some pressure but after a couple of great saves from Pat Clifford the Fossa boys scored a fourth when Mossie Lyons finished off a quick and accurate passing movement started in defence by John Dineen. For Fossa, Liam O’Toole and Bart O’Neill were outstanding in defence. Alan Brady, Mossie Lyons and David Butler had a good game in midfield. Unfortunately on the night Alan Brady left his shooting boots at home failing to hit the target on a number of occasions. Up front Jimmy Sheehan did well, despite hardly moving from the one spot all night, and Wayne McDonald was best for Fossa on the night. The four nil victory was followed up with an introduction to Killarney night-life and hopefully a return match in Hohkeppel sometime in the future. The Fossa team on the night was Pat Clifford, David Butler, John Dineen, Liam O’Toole, Mossie Lyons, Wayne McDonald, Alan Brady, Bart O’Neill and Jimmy Sheehan. Sympathy Fossa GAA Club would like to extend it’s deepest sympathy to the Talbot family,

Aghadoe on the death of Julie’s mother, Joan Brosnan, Beaufort. Also, sympathy is extended to the Moran and Buckley families of Curragh on the death of their mother, Margaret Buckley, Curragh. Fossa Notes If anybody has any item they would like included in the notes, please email information to John O’Neill at pro. fossa.kerry@gaa.ie. Please forward information before Sunday at 11am.

Mastergeeha FC

U11 Mastergeeha v Inter Kenmare. Mastergeeha played Kenmare at home on Saturday morning in a mini blitz. All tried their best with lots of goals for both sides along the way. U13 National Cup Mastergeeha 9-0 Mountshannon. Mastergeeha were much too strong for Clare side Mountshannon at Kilbrean Park on Saturday afternoon. All played well with goals from Mark O’Shea 3, Colin and Oisin O’Leary 2 each with Donagh Fahy and Oran Dwyer getting one each. U15 Division 1 Park B 3 Mastergeeha 1. The lads lost out in this cracking game between two very evenly matched sides. They defended well throughout and created some good goal scoring chances with Philip O’Leary and Shane Warren going close in the 1st half before the home side scored just before the break to take the lead. Mastergeeha started the better team in the 2nd half with both O’Leary and Warren again going close but the Park doubled their lead with 10mins to go. Shane Warren responded when he swept home following super wing play

from Philip O’Leary but the home side struck again in the closing stages to take the points as Mastergeeha pushed for the equaliser. U17 Killorglin 3 Mastergeeha 2. In this close game the boys opened the scoring when Paul O’Shea finished well from the edge of the box. However just before the break the home side equalised. In the second half Mastergeeha took the lead again with Jamie O Shea finishing off a good move. In the closing stages of the game the Killorglin side scored twice and despite their best efforts the boys could not get the equaliser they deserved. Seniors Division 1B Mastergeeha 3 Listowel 1.
