Miracle escape for Zoe after terrifying fall

Zoe O’Dwyer Kelly and Noel Mounsey.

EDITOR'S VIEW ON TUESDAY evening, it seemed like every road, laneway and street was a tributary bearing waves of community heroes to the Killarney Plaza Hotel, the host venue for the 2016 Killarney Looking Good Awards . From pupils in our local primary and secondary schools to our most senior citizens, the town should be very proud of Team Killarney which has strengthened and grown immeasurably over the years. Killarney Advertiser has been media sponsor of Killarney Looking Good for seven years now and we are all very proud of this longstanding involvement. Killarney Advertiser is first and foremost a community news magazine and we are always delighted to give a platform to all involved in ensuring Killarney sparkles at every

level. In September Killarney made another clean sweep when it won a gold medal in the 2016 Tidy Towns competition. It was a case of celebrations all round as overall the county notched five gold medals, the others going to Tralee, Listowel, Kenmare and Sneem. But all of this is not something that happens by magic. We would like to congratulate all the winners, as well as every volunteer involved in Killarney Looking Good, its dedicated chairperson Yvonne Quill, Johnny McGuire, PR officer, and Killarney Municipal District council staff and management. Killarney Looking Good is a great tribute to the town’s community and business sector.

Soldiers of Destiny form ‘Killarney Central’ Cumann THE Soldiers of Destiny are re-organising its structures locally in Killarney. Four Fianna Fail Cumann joined forces under the umbrella of a new "Killarney Central" Cumann. Its inaugural annual general meeting unfolded in Scott's Hotel on Monday night at 9pm. New and existing members contributed to the key meeting, which was chaired by John Brassil TD. Fianna Fail Senators and members of Kerry County Council were also in attendance.

A PARASAILING adventure turned to disaster for Barraduff native Zoe O’Dwyer Kelly and her boyfriend Noel Mounsey, from Ennis, Co Clare, recently. Zoe and Noel, who are based in Sydney, were celebrating the first anniversary of their first date in the Australian city last Sunday week by parasailing above the ocean off Manly when the cord snapped and they fell a horrifying 30 feet into the water below. Zoe, 20, was knocked unconscious and was bleeding from a fractured skull, and Noel sustained a broken shoulder and wrist. But despite his injuries, Noel managed to keep his partner afloat while they were trapped under the parachute. “I wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for him,” said Zoe. A passing scuba-diving group was able to help the pair, who were left fighting for their lives and they were rushed to hospital for surgery. Zoë’s mother Mary O’Dwyer Kelly, who is based in Rathmore, flew to Australia to be with Zoe. Her aunt Evelyn Woodard is also in daily contact with Zoe. Now recovering, Zoe told the Killarney Advertiser she and Noel were getting “the best medical care”. “We are so grateful for all the love and support we have received,” she said. The Maritime Authority is investigating the incident. We send Zoe and Noel every good wish in their recovery.

Why is it important to detect hearing loss as early as possible? Children learn to communicate by imitating the sounds they hear. This results in delayed speech/language development, social problems and academic difficulties. How common is hearing loss in children? It’s quite common. About four in every 1,000 children at school entry level in Ireland have unilateral (in one ear) and bilateral (in both ears) mild to profound hearing loss. What is conductive hearing loss? Frequently, hearing loss in young children is conductive. This is often temporary, and caused by earwax or middle ear infections. Many children with temporary hearing loss can have their hearing restored through medical treatment or minor surgery. How can I tell if my infant has a hearing problem? Parents are often the first people to sense that their infant has a hearing problem. It is important to recognise the signs of hearing loss in infants and toddlers as early as possible. The most critical period for speech and language development is from birth to four years of age. Observe your child’s development from infancy on. If you suspect a problem, do not delay in getting your child’s hearing tested. It’s never too early to ask. Call Maria at Cluasa hearing to arrange a test for your child.

TechTalk with Chris Reina THE DOG AND BONE

Chris Reina gives an insight into a device that is part of almost everyone’s daily life WELCOME to the second edition of TechTalk. Every two weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email me on chris@teachtech.support with suggestions. This week we’re exploring a device that is part of almost everyone’s life now - The Dog and Bone (phone). The first mobile phone was shown in 1973 by Motorola, but it took another 10 years before you could purchase one in 1983. Since then it has become an integral part of our lives. In 1993, SMS or “Text” messaging began and now close to 20 billion text messages are sent worldwide every single day. The three top makers of mobile phones are Apple, Samsung, and Huawei. Microsoft acquired Nokia in 2014 and has begun to rebrand itself, but as yet not become a major player. The three operating systems phones run are iOS for Apple, Android for

Samsung and Huawei and Windows Mobile for Microsoft. Most current phones can be considered “smartphones” which can have a suite of Apps on them – which greatly extends the devices capabilities beyond that of a simple communication device. Examples of this are: calculator; clock; wallet; video/still camera; sat nav; music/movie/video player; calendar; document storage/creation; dictionary; notes; compass; level and much more. The scale of what a small device in your pocket can do is nearly infinite. While different companies offer different options - mobile communication combined with widespread 4G puts computing power far in excess of what sent man to the moon! In two weeks' time – Santa’s Technology Elves will host a Christmas special!

Question How do I reserve a particular registration number for a new 2017 car? Answer

You can only apply to reserve a vehicle registration number on or after 1 November of the year before you intend to bring the vehicle into use. In other words, to use the number in 2017 you can only apply to reserve a number from 1 November 2016 until Revenue’s close of business at the end of 2017. An application received prior to 1 November 2016 will be returned un-processed. The number you reserve must be in the normal format and must correspond with the licensing authority area where you normally reside. It must also correspond with the year and half year in which the vehicle is to be first brought into use. For example, 172-D-111 may only be reserved by someone living in Dublin for a vehicle intended to be brought into use in the second half of 2017. The registered owner of the vehicle on which the registration number is to be displayed must be the person in whose name the number was reserved. All registration numbers are available for reservation, with the exception of the first number of each half year issued in the following cities Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford. These numbers are, for example, 171-C-1, 172-C-1, 171-L-1, 172-L-1. They are reserved for the Mayor or Lord Mayor of each of these cities and are not available for reservation by anyone else. A reserved registration number can only be assigned to a vehicle when it has been reached in the normal sequence. It may not be displayed on a vehicle before it has been formally assigned by Revenue, following the presentation and acceptance of a completed declaration for registration. The fee to reserve a vehicle registration number is €1,000 and should be submitted with the application. The cheque, bank draft or postal order should be made payable to the Collector, Customs and Excise. You apply on Form VRT15A to the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, Registration Section, Central Vehicle Office, Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Killarney gets on track for new walking and cycling route KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL has announced its acquisition of a parcel of land beside the River Flesk in Killarney which will allow for the development of a new walking and cycling route linking Ross Road and Muckross Road. The new route will mean that walkers and cyclists will now be able to avail of an off-road facility all the way from the Flesk Bridge via Ross Castle and onto Fossa. In recent days, Kerry County Council has purchased land from Killarney Racecourse to allow for the completion of a walkway and cycleway from the Flesk Bridge at Maurice O’Donoghue Memorial Park via the banks of the river and on towards the Ross Road just a short distance from Ross Castle. The council will now look at

funding options to progress the project. The cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin, said the acquisition of land meant the new amenity route could now proceed to public consultation and planning approval: “This will be an absolutely wonderful addition to Killarney’s selection of walkways and cycleways and will provide locals and visitors alike with a fabulous riverside amenity connecting Muckross Road and Ross Road,” he said. “What is more important is that this additional amenity effectively extends the offroad route from the Muckross Road towards the N71 at Fossa near the Hotel Europe giving walkers and cyclists the option of travelling

all the way from Fossa right into the heart of Killarney National Park on the Muckross side of Killarney town. This will further enhance Killarney’s international reputation as a walking and cycling destination.” The route follows a line from the Muckross Road, leaving the road at the Flesk Bridge at the Maurice O’Donoghue Memorial Park on the town side of the river, veering off at the rear of the Killarney Racecourse and joining the Ross Road on the Killarney side of the Racecourse. The route will then join the existing footpath/ cycle lane along Ross Road towards Ross Castle and into the National Park.

Zen moments on the horizon for Killarney EAST will meet West in a truly zen style as 750 practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism will converge on Killarney for a retreat course next spring. The three-day marquee event will unfold over the weekend of April 21-23, 2017, on the spectacular grounds of the Killarney Racecourse and will bring together visitors from around the world for a special course on what is considered to be the crown jewel of Buddha’s teaching, The Great Seal or Mahamudra. The guests are all members of Diamond Way Buddhist meditation centres of the Karma Kagyu tradition and the course will be led by the teacher and

meditation master, Lama Ole Nydhal. This is the second time this course has been brought to Killarney following on from a course held at the Killarney Plaza Hotel in 2014, hosted by members of the local Diamond Way group working closely with Mary Hartnett and others of the Kerry Convention Bureau. Delegates are expected to arrive in the region in the days before the event to avail of additional opportunities to explore the region while staying at a variety of accommodation providers in the Killarney Valley. Musical society holds open auditions for Me and My Girl ASPIRING musical theatre stars in Killarney are invited to take centre stage this Monday, November 21, as Killarney Musical Society holds open auditions for its 2017 production of Me and My Girl. Me and My Girl is a musical with music by Noel Gay and its original book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose. The musical is set in the late 1930s and tells the story of an unapologetically unrefined Cockney gentleman named Bill Snibson, who learns that he is the 14th heir to the Earl of Hareford. The action is set in Hampshire, Mayfair and Lambeth. Auditions will be held from 6pm to 10pm in the Hotel Killarney and are open to anyone over the age of 16. “Please prepare a song of your choice, preferably from a musical set in England and dialogue scripts will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there!" said spokeswoman Ann Ivory.

A HERO’S welcome awaited champion powerlifter Frances Arthur when she arrived at work on Wednesday. The Killarney teacher was on top of the world as pupils and her fellow staff members at Holy Cross Mercy National School gave her a standing ovation in recognition of her triumph at the World Powerlifting Championships in Italy at the weekend. Frances had a clutch of coveted international awards to show her pupils after she won top prizes in the championships, which are organised by the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation and took place in Lake Garda. The Killarney native, who trains at Phoenix Fitness gym in High Street with Sean McCarthy, competed in the 53kg weight category in which she came third overall and second in her age category. “I achieved a new personal best in the three categories – 85kg squat, 47.5 bench and 127.5 deadlift,” she told Killarney Advertiser. Frances, who qualified for the world championships in Dublin in May, paid tribute to the support of her trainer Sean and was delighted that he and her friend and fellow powerlifting enthusiast, Melanie Aranda, travelled with her to Italy to support her. “I have really loved powerlifting since I started it and the deadlift is my favourite category,” she said. Frances was also congratulated at the homecoming by her husband William Moloney, children Maebh and Liam, parents James and Margaret Arthur and niece Ava Considine.

AN INCREASED level of activity has led University Hospital Kerry to advise that non-urgent patients may now experience significant delays. Hospital management are requesting that, where appropriate, the public contact their GP in the first instance and explore all other options available to them prior to attending the Emergency Department if their needs are not urgent. “The hospital would also like to take this opportunity to assure the public and service users that every effort is being made to address this situation,” according to a statement issued this afternoon by University Hospital Kerry. “Patient care is paramount in UHK and the situation is being managed as a priority and reviewed on an ongoing basis.” The statement added: “The HSE South/South West Hospital Group and University Hospital Kerry wish to acknowledge the ongoing hard work and dedication of all staff during this particularly busy time.”

Free car parking arrangements for Killarney for Christmas Magic is in the air

as we look forward to Christmas in Killarney parades

THAT seasonal sense of anticipation has been filling the town for the past week. The Christmas garlands are already festooning the streets and enchantment is already in the air as the countdown begins to the 2016 Christmas in Killarney Magic parades. The perfect way to kickstart the Christmas celebrations, the first of the Magic parades for this festive season will take place on Friday, November 25, when the streets of Killarney will be illuminated in fabulous festive fashion and will be filled with music, colour and a whopping 11 floats. The Magic parades always offer a top-class night out for all the family, and the first of these, on November 25, will see the children’s parade commencing at 6pm and featuring Santa and his elves. The parade will, of course, culminate in the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights. Santa Claus has confirmed that many of his friends will join him on the night including Minnie and Mickey Mouse as well as Frozen stars Anna, Elsa and Olaf. Not only that, but

a host of famous Disney celebrities the parade will also be joined by children from local schools. You’ll get a bird's eye view of Santa all along the parade route which takes in New Street on to Beech Road, Mission Road, then Main Street and back down New Street. If you miss Santa and his friends on the 25th don’t worry, there will be a Christmas parade on Saturday, December 3, December 10, and 17 ,at 6pm. “Christmas in Killarney is pleased to announce that 2016 will see the return of the New Year’s Eve parade on December 31, at 6pm,” said a spokesperson. “When speaking to Santa he informed the Christmas in Killarney committee that there is still time to make the nice list if you are on your best behaviour for December and to make sure you post your letters in plenty of time.” For further information on the Christmas in Killarney events log onto www.christmasinkillarney.com

IN WHAT is welcome news for shoppers who are planning their sprees in the runup to the festive season, Kerry County Council has announced that car parking will be free for the month of December in the High Street and Lewis Road car parks in Killarney. Parking will be free up to 11am for the month of December in the following car parks: New Street Car Park (lower section only), Glebe Car Park; and Fair Hill Car Park The Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin, said the provision of free parking annually is a gesture to local retailers and people visiting town to do their Christmas shopping. “This is an important gesture by the local authority to encourage people into the town during the Christmas period and I would urge people to shop local this Christmas,” he said. “Killarney is always a special place to be at Christmas time and the provision of free parking at particular times during this period gives people a chance to enjoy the atmosphere and to shop locally,” he added.

Miriam and Michael give food for thought BROADCASTER Miriam O’Callaghan and Independent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae were on hand to support Kerry Food Hub recently. They met with David Gleeson of Kerry Food Hub, at Castleisland’s Enterprise Town promotion which was sponsored by Bank of Ireland. Two Kerry food production companies have taken up residence in the hub since last month. “The Kerry Food Hub is a brand-new custom-built facility incorporating four food production units completed to a very high standard,” said manager George Nash. Unit 2 at the Food Hub will become home to Harty Foods Ltd., who will produce a range of healthy snacks under the brand name ‘Origin’. Con Leen Salads Ltd, a second-generation family business run by Kate and David Leen, occupies Unit 3. The Leen family will continue to produce their existing range of freshly packed salads for the retail and catering sectors, as well as expanding into new products and markets.

FITZGERALD STADIUM ONE OF 12 POTENTIAL VENUES FOR RUGBY WORLD CUP

Killarney ‘set to take the world by storm’ KILLARNEY is poised “to take the world stage by storm”, in the words of Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae as Ireland’s 2023 Rugby World Cup bid took a huge leap forward this week. Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium is one of 12 potential venues for hosting the Rugby World Cup, if Ireland’s bid for the 2023 tournament is successful. Other candidates unveiled on Tuesday were Croke Park, Aviva Stadium, RDS Arena, Nowlan Park, Kilkenny, Páirc Ui Chaoimh, Thomond Park, Pearse Stadium, Galway, McHale Park, Castlebar,

Casement Park, Kingspan Stadium, and Celtic Park Derry. The chairman of Ireland’s Rugby World Cup 2023 Bid Oversight Board, Dick Spring, has formally announced Ireland’s entry into the ‘candidate’ phase of the selection process to determine the host for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Ireland will compete with South Africa and France to win the right to host the global tournament. The winning bid will be announced in November 2017. The announcement of the Rugby World Cup 2023 host union will take

place in November 2017. The Rugby World Cup expected to be worth over €800 million to the economy with over 445,000 visitors predicted to travel to Ireland if the bid is successful. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said news of Fitzgerald Stadium’s inclusion on the list of potential venues “could not be better for Killarney”. The Kilgarvan-based TD added: “The businesspeople of Killarney are no strangers to big crowds from Munster finals to concerts, festivals you name it, Killarney can do it, this

event is a different animal but there is no better town in Ireland to host it.” Seanad Leas-Cathaoirleach and Fine Gael Kerry Senator Paul Coghlan, Killarney, said the selection of Fitzgerald Stadium “is obviously a good move”. “There is currently a proposal to increase the capacity of the stadium from 43,000 to 50,000, and I have no doubt that it will serve as an exceptional facility for rugby fans visiting from around the globe, he said.”

Krave has the recipe for success

Kate Leen, Krave.

AS INGENIOUS as it is delicious, Krave is a local business that delivers nutritious and tasty lunches to workplaces in the Killarney and Tralee areas. Krave was established in July of this year to offer busy working people the convenience of having a healthy and delicious lunch delivered straight to their desk. The owner of Krave, Kate Leen, said: “I remember being at work in my previous role and as a busy manager I rarely took a full lunch break. Some days i would be organised enough to pack my lunch, other days not so. Also having two small children to get out the door, I came to realise we often neglect our own wellbeing! I remember thinking one day if someone could hand me my lunch, and a healthy one at that, it might make lunch time a bit easier.” Kate’s husband David Leen already ran a business providing salads made fresh daily with no additives or preservatives to shops, delis and butchers. After much research Kate undertook a food programme. “This helped me greatly understand the food business and helped us with the development of Krave,” she added. “We also worked closely with local chef Mark Doe over a number of months to create nutritious and delicious lunches, with healthy proteins and slow-release carbs to keep you fuller for longer and avoid that mid afternoon slump.” All Krave dishes are available through delivery and are not available to shops. “We have also introduced vegetable curries and rustic soups to our winter menu to warm your toes in the winter months!” said Kate. Krave, along with its sister business the long-established Con Leen Salads, is located in The Kerry Food Hub in Firies village. “We offer deliveries in Tralee on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and in Killarney on Wednesdays and Fridays with a view to adding additional delivery days,” said Kate. Contact Krave on 085-179 7365, email kravelunchdeliveries@ gmail.com or see kravelunch.com

In the frame for wine and art night MEMBERS of Killarney Rotary Club are busy putting the finishing touches to one of highlights of Munster’s social calendar, the Evening of Wine & Art. The 13th annual event will take place in The Malton Hotel next Thursday, November 24, and will support a number of local charities. “The event is held in association with Daly’s SuperValu without whom we could not hold this event every year,” said Killarney Rotary President Angela O’Connor. “It looks like the event will be even bigger than previous years. We have some fantastic worthy causes lined up both on the charitable and sporting fronts, namely The Stephen Lyne Foundation, The Killarney Cardiac Response Unit, Football For All, Killarney Swimming Club, The Kilcummin Defibrillator Group, Fossa Rowing Club, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Coolick and Tiernaboul Schools, the Order of Malta and Presentation Secondary School Music Programme.” Angela added: “There will be lots of wine, cheese and beer to sample on the night and we could not do any of it without the help and sponsorship of Daly's SuperValu and the Daly family. We are also delighted to welcome back The Killarney Brewing Company

this year. “A great night is planned but of course none of this would be possible without the numerous local artists who have been working away over the last year and who deserve our support and encouragement for their talent."

Experience the enchantment of the Christmas Island THIS year Santa is on the move and where better to locate than in the heart of Killarney town. Harold, Santa’s chief elf, has been busy all year creating a magical Christmas Island which Santa can call home in the run up to the busiest day of the year for him. Christmas Island is the perfect place for boys and girls to come and chat to Santa and make sure they have made his ‘2016 nice list’. Once you have met with Santa and his elves you can enjoy the festive funfair ride, make a wish at the wishing wall, get your photo taken with the toy soldiers, visit the life size crib and much more. Don’t forget to bring your letter to post in the big red Christmas post-box. The man in red himself told us he is really looking forward to his time in Killarney. “This is a very exciting time for me, Harold and the other elves. We have been looking for a second home away from the North Pole, somewhere we can chat to the children before Christmas, and being here in the centre of Killarney, alongside the sleigh rides is the perfect location.” Christmas Island is located at Kenmare Place Killarney opposite Killarney Cinema on the Ha Ha, and will be open on December 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11, and every day from December 16 to 23. It is open from 2pm to 6pm on Fridays and 12pm to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission for children and adults is €5 and infants are free!

Visitor injured after ‘somersaulting’ off her bike on uneven road surface

FUNDING has recently been secured to carry out essential repairs on the dangerous lag at Ross Road. This work will commence at the Ross Castle end – and not before time, say residents. Patricia Gogsch and Marie Clifton are among residents who have highlighted how they have witnessed accidents occurring at various points on the route due to the uneven surface. “In August, I came upon an accident in which a visitor to the area literally somersaulted off her bike,” Patricia Gogsch told the Killarney Advertiser. “I called the emergency services and it transpired she had broken her shoulder. Like many people, she simply didn’t realise that there were seriously uneven surfaces along the road.” Regular walkers in the area tend to organise their walk to accommodate the sidestepping the perilous spots, while waterlogging is also a serious issue along the route, added Patricia and Marie. “Now and again patching takes place but this mode of repair takes out more of the matter underneath over time,” said Patricia. They also highlighted how easy it is for motorists to lose control due to the road surface. They along with Councillor John Sheahan said the footpaths are also in urgent need of appear. “I will be raising the matter of the path’s condition at council level,” said Cllr Sheahan.

Room for One More, which is written by Kathryn Crowley (Sheahan), who is originally from Main Street, Killarney, will have its Killarney launch in the Liquid Lounge at the Killarney Grand Hotel at 7pm. Kathryn, a school principal in Dublin, said: "Aoife Beary is one of the bravest and most determined young people I have the privilege to know. I hope any funds raised from the sale of my collection of stories will help defray the significant costs of her journey to recovery and help to make her future brighter

“KERRY BRAVEHEARTS” is the title of a new book penned by awardwinning Kerry journalist and photographer Con Dennehy. The publication, which will be launched in Killarney on Sunday, November 27, looks deep into the heart and soul of 42 inspirational Kerry people who have overcome, and in many cases continue to overcome, adversity in their own personal life. “This book invites each of us to put ourselves in another’s shoes, to see and feel the existence of pain, bravery, love, community and courage. It is a book brought to you by ordinary people who have, and continue to live, extraordinary lives,” said Currow native Con Dennehy. Among those featured in the book are Margaret Curran (Waterville), Kathleen Poff (Brosna), Marianne McGrath (Kenmare), Becka Flynn (Killorglin), Barry Clifford (Castlecove), Liam Dennehy Quinn (Fossa) and Tom Doherty (Killarney) “Each person featured in the book has battled with a range of life-changing traumas such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, depression, brain injury, loss of limbs, strokes, epilepsy, suicide, rare growth disorders and other medical issues,” sad Con. The book features the incredible and honest accounts of cancer by former Kerry Rose Julett Culloty from Kilcummin and photographer Evelyn Woodard (Faha). “Tralee farmer Tommy Moynihan recounts a horrific farm accident that resulted in the loss of his left hand. Anthony Morris from Killarney details his traumatic battle with Lyme disease while Rathmore native David Saunders tells his inspiring story that saw him lose a leg to cancer but fight back to become an Irish international amputee soccer star,” added Con. Inspirational stories from Betty Crosbie (Killarney), Michael John Dineen (Rathmore) and Jim O’Shea (Listry) are also featured in the book. Kerry Bravehearts will be launched in The Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney on Sunday, November 27, at 4pm by Radio Kerry presenter and journalist Deirdre Walsh.

Get your skates on and enjoy Killarney on Ice

IT’S back! The wonderful winter attraction Killarney on Ice will be located at the Beech Road car park from December 2 until January 8. Beginners and seasoned skaters alike are secretly hoping to unleash their inner Torvill and Deans! The ice rink was hugely popular in 2015 and it is a key part of the Christmas in Killarney Festival. The 600 square metre ice rink under marquee will return to the Beech Road car park beside the tourist office from Friday, December 2. Already great interest has been aroused with the announcement of the return of Kerry’s only festive ice rink and group bookings in particular have been exceptionally strong. Schools, youth clubs and sports teams across the county are using the facility of the group booking discount rate to plan a session on the ice. The normal opening times can be extended during the day to accommodate school groups. “Value for money is key,” says Tim O’Donoghue, the promoter of the rink. “That’s why we have special family and group rates.” Helmets and skate aids are available for novice skaters with double bladed skates to help young children. “Ice skating is lots of fun, easily picked up, and is great exercise,” said Tim. The rink will be open daily from 5pm on selected weekdays and from 11am on Saturdays and Sundays and during school holidays. “Be sure to check our website before you travel,” added Tim. “Sessions last for one hour and tickets can be booked online at www.killarneyonice.com. For further information and group or company bookings, please contact Killarney On Ice at 085-7400366. Christmas gift vouchers will be available from the ice rink box office and these are always immensely popular. To celebrate the return of the ice rink, walk-up opening weekend prices will be €10 for all ages all hours.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

CRITICAL IMPORTANCE OF NEW NATIONAL PAEDIATRIC HOSPITAL ON OCTOBER 27, Connolly for Kids Hospital group attended the hearing of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health, on the suitability of the St James's Hospital campus as a location for the new National Paediatric Hospital. Following our presentation and response to committee members' questions, representatives of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board and the Children's Hospital Group Board also made a presentation and responded to questions from members. We were shocked and disturbed by the information presented to a Government committee by representatives of both boards. Much of the evidence presented was incorrect and misleading as well as categorically false in many instances. Given the amount of deceptive information presented to the Joint Oireachtas Committee, it is evident that neither the Taoiseach nor the Minister for Health can continue to have confidence in either board. We are, therefore, calling on the Taoiseach to dissolve both the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board and the Children's Hospital Group Board with immediate effect. In light of the indisputable lack of a single justifiable reason for locating the Children's Hospital on the St James's site, and the critical importance of the new National Paediatric Hospital to future generations of children in Ireland, we also request that there be an urgent re-appraisal of the St James's and Connolly Hospital sites. This could be undertaken within a very short timeframe and must consider the primary criteria: 1) maternity hospital co-location which will ensure better clinical outcomes, 2) space for expansion of all hospitals on the sites and 3) ease of access. Valerin O'Shea, 6 Burleigh Mews, Burlington Road, Dublin 4

Fire safety for Traveller sites IN VIEW of the June 2016 Report that stated that up to 80% of Traveller homes in the country were high fire risk, is Kerry County Council satisfied that all the Traveller accommodation in this county is as free as is humanly possible from such risk, I feel it is appropriate to address this matter following the first anniversary of the Carrickmines fire tragedy that claimed 10 lives. An accommodation assessment by the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management following that Carrickmines fire found that very many units there did not have working fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and that a majority had dangerous electrical installations. It also stated that in some locations Units were sited too proximate to each other. Kerry County Council stated that it continues its pro-active programme of engagement with the Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee, local Traveller advocacy groups and resident s of the sites in the development and implementation of ongoing fire safety imitative. An important element of the overall programme is fire safety awareness and Kerry County Council works with resident and stakeholder groups to ensure attendance at fire safety awareness events organised by the council. It continues to carry out pre-incident planning and to ensure that Traveller fire safety is included in the annual Planning Programme and this has been completed for 2016 in all four sites in Kerry. The Fire Service Department visits the Traveller sites the week before Fire Safety Week each year and this has occurred for this year in all Kerry Traveller accommodation sites on September 22 and 23, 2016. Kerry Council said that this important matter will be kept under review in conjunction with the Local Traveller Consultative Committee. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 23:35-43: THIS weekend’s feast puts before us Jesus as a person who never used power for his own selfish advantage. Who have you known who used power for the benefit of others rather than for their own self-interest? When have you used power in this way? The power of God is shown in an unexpected way in the Crucifixion, not in a wonderful display of spectacular dominance, but in Jesus sharing our human weakness. When has the honesty of another sharing his/her human vulnerability with you had a powerful effect? When has your honesty in that way had a positive effect on another? Jesus is an example of someone in apparent helplessness. In human terms, he was powerless. It was his trust in the love of God with him that helped him through. It was only later with the hindsight of the resurrection that the moment of helplessness could be seen as one in which the power of God was present. Have you had experiences on which you can look back now and see that the power of God was at work in your moments of helplessness? We may also identify with the good thief, reaching out in support of the innocent Jesus. Who has reached out to you when you experienced unfair treatment? To whom have you reached out in that way? The scene also puts before us the liberating power of forgiveness. The forgiveness of Jesus brought new life to the criminal hanging on the cross with him. When have you found that forgiveness given, or received, was a source of new life for yourself or for others? John Byrne, OSA, Veritas

Christ the King

THIS is the final Sunday of Year C and, as we draw to a close, of our reading of Luke’s Gospel, we hear the account of Jesus’ crucifixion. It is the Feast of Christ the King and this Gospel certainly gives us an opportunity to lay aside a lot of cultural baggage we may have about kings, leaders and kingdoms. Jesus’ kingdom is unlike the one that Pilate, or many other earthly leaders know. It is a kingdom built on love, service, justice, reconciliation and peace. Few ‘kings’ can measure up to this: responding to violence with forgiveness, giving those with no hope a reason to hope. Today’s Gospel gives a powerful image of Jesus as servant King, like a beacon light for society in today’s world. Who do you know in our world today who is the more living example of this type of kingship, making daily sacrifices in endless service to those around them? In the words of Michel de Verteuil: “The power of truth, of honesty, of forgiveness – with no frills! How different the world would be if it was governed by this kind of power.” Jane Mellett

Don’t let hearing loss affect your quality of life

Despite hearing being one of the essential five senses, many who suffer from hearing loss are reluctant to have a check-up, says Colin O’Brien, hearing aid audiologist with Hidden Hearing, Killarney

THE ability to communicate is one of the things that makes us human, and yet we go through life with impaired hearing and do little or nothing about it. Studies show that almost one in six people in Ireland experience hearing difficulties but many people delay seeking treatment for up to 15 years.

As part of a global hearing concern Hidden Hearing has access to some of the latest technologies which have been designed in leading edge laboratories to aid those whose hearing is impaired, for example it carries a range of Bluetooth-enabled hearing devices which allow the wearer to wirelessly plug directly into a TV or stereo, thereby enhancing the quality of people’s lives. If you answer ‘Yes’ to the following questions it may indicate that you need to have your hearing checked: do you often feel that people are mumbling or not speaking clearly?

Do you find it difficult to follow a conversation in a crowded room or restaurant? Do you frequently ask people to speak up or repeat themselves? Do you have difficulty hearing the telephone or the doorbell? Do you have to turn the television or radio up loud to hear better?

Hidden Hearing has invested significantly to ensure that our clinics have the very latest technology available worldwide and the Hidden Hearing Clinic in Killarney is equipped to deal with hearing loss of any kind.

For further information or to book a free hearing test at Hidden Hearing Killarney, Unit 5 Scott Street, call Donal on 064-663 0044 or log onto www.hiddenhearing.ie

People of Killarney urged to vote for Cadbury’s Christmas convoy to visit our town

Imelda Winters, Jade O Connor and Mandy Shields from the Cadbury Chorus Line.

MOVE over Willy Wonka, Cadbury has revealed details of its 2016 ‘Cadvent Convoy’, which will see Cadbury Christmas trucks packed with festive surprises and events delivering joy across the nation, for 24 consecutive days, from December 1. And Killarney could get in on the act if an online vote is successful. Each day throughout December, the Cadvent Convoy trucks will arrive at a different location and this year, the Irish public can cast their votes on where the trucks should stop – be it your own hometown, or that of a loved one. Voting is open until November 28 and all you have to do is simply visit www.cadburycadvent.ie and choose from three locations in Kerry – Killarney, Tralee and Listowel. Once voting has closed, the full Cadvent Convoy route will be revealed at a launch event in Dublin, on December 1. At each stop along the Cadvent Convoy route, the trucks will throw open their doors to reveal magical Christmas scenes, with a host of festive entertainment for the whole family. From enjoying your favourite Cadbury treats and a magical Cadbury Grotto, to festive performances from choirs and music acts, the Cadvent Convoy will be spreading festive cheer and helping the nation count down to Christmas. Speaking about the Cadvent Convoy, Tricia Burke, senior brand manager with Cadbury, said: “Christmas is, without doubt, our favourite time of the year at Cadbury. The Cadvent countdown allows us to bring the excitement and anticipation of Christmas to life, using one of our most iconic Christmas products, the advent calendar – all while creating magical moments across the nation each day, for everyone in the family. “Our tour of the country last December was a great success, but this year, we wanted to really get the public involved from the very beginning, by giving them a chance to vote for the towns they want us to visit in 2016. We have shortlisted a number of towns across all counties, so all people have to do is log on, select their county, vote for town of choice, and we’ll bring the Joy.” You can follow all the Cadvent Convoy action throughout December, via Cadbury’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Provocateur SEASON OF SHARING SHOULD EXTEND ALL YEAR ROUND THE supermoon this week caused great excitement and no shortage of television coverage, which inevitably extended into speculation as to the possibility of life elsewhere across the galaxies. And this prompted one of the most prescient comments I heard in relation to all the talk about the supermoon: “Why are so many people so obsessed with contacting life other planets when we don’t talk enough to the people on our own?” It made me think of last year’s Christmas advert by John Lewis – the Man on the Moon. Featuring a haunting cover by 19-yearold Norwegian singer Aurora Aksnes of Oasis’ “Half the World Away”, the ad campaign told the story of a young girl trying to contact an elderly man spotted living alone on the moon. Her attempts to catch the man's attention fail until she sends him a special delivery of a telescope, via balloon, and the man finally gets to see Earth on Christmas night. The strapline for the advert is "Show someone they're loved this Christmas", with the company teaming up with the charity Age UK. Closer to home, this year, Lidl’s Christmas TV advert delivers a serious tug to the heartstrings and the poignant mini-movie has impressed all round. Based on the tagline “Share more this Christmas” the tear-jerking tale sees a family coming together to create a memorable Christmas for their beloved father and grandfather. Social media was abuzz as the ad struck a chord all round and has really captured the spirit of the festive season. I think these messages simply cannot be repeated enough, no matter what season we’re in.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

ON THE ONE ROAD Government ministers from both sides of the border united as the Irish Rugby Football Union officially launched its candidacy to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup at Lansdowne Road on Tuesday. Supporting the "Ready for the World" slogan, Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness threw their weight behind the bid for the sport's quadrennial showpiece event which they have yet to host. As New Zealand has already hosted the event IRFU Chief Executive, Philip Browne, doesn’t see why Ireland should be denied the opportunity with much of the bid focusing on the unique welcome the expected 445,000 plus fans will receive. A mixture of four rugby and eight Gaelic Games stadiums will be employed by the bid team, with 83,200 capacity Croke Park, which temporarily was used by the Irish team while Lansdowne Road was being renovated from 2007-2010, hosting the semi-finals and final, if the bid is successful. The formal bid will be sent before the World Rugby Council in June of 2017, with a final decision made on the host announced on November 15, 2017. Ireland will compete with France and South Africa, both of whom have hosted it before, for the honour. "This could be worth over €800m to the economy of Ireland, and that's a conservative estimate," said Browne. "We expect 4 billion TV eyes on us, and the best attended Rugby World Cup ever. We want a sustainable solution, and with that all our stadiums are pre-existing, and will be city centre, walkable locations." There will be an expected 2 million tickets sold

Survey sought to combat dumping in Kerry A DOOR-TO-DOOR survey is being sought in Kerry to stem the rise in illegal dumping in the county, writes Anne Lucey in the Irish Times. Illegal dumping is on the rise in the county, with rubbish is being left in bogs, woodlands, tourist areas and remote rural areas. “A problem has emerged with some of the council’s 98 bring-banks and extra security cameras are being installed to monitor the sites to identify people leaving household waste at the recyclable centres. Known littering blackspots are also being monitored,” according to the piece in Tuesday’s Irish Times. At the Kerry County Council annual budget meeting, councillors said hiking the

at the tournament that will run from September 15 to November 4, with the IRFU also hopeful of catering for modest budgets with a number of stadiums retaining standing-only terraces. "We want to bring a unique mix of terraces and seats," said Browne. "We don't want only all-seater venues, and this would enable us to deliver a mix of pricing for fans." First round tickets for terraced areas could be available for as little as €15, it is understood. Dick Spring, Chairman of Ireland's RWC 2023 Bid Oversight Board, promised Ireland's proposition will be "world class and compelling". "We believe Ireland is ready to stage a Rugby World Cup like no other. A tournament that will capture the imagination of the world," said Spring, who is a former Ireland rugby international. The co-operation between both political jurisdictions was highlighted by McGuinness. "This shows how sports mad the country is," he said. "Everyone can get right behind it regardless of politics or allegiances. This is a collective effort and I commend the GAA for placing its grounds at the disposal of the tournament, a key factor in Ireland's ability to bid for the tournament." GAA grounds will make up the backbone with eight venues listed alongside the Aviva Stadium (Dublin), Thomond Park (Limerick), Ravenhill (Belfast) and the RDS (Dublin). Croke Park (Dublin), Pairc Ui Chaoimh (Cork), Casement Park (Belfast), Fitzgerald Stadium (Killarney), Pearse Stadium (Galway), McHale Park (Mayo), Nowlan Park (Kilkenny) and Celtic Park (Derry) are all part of the Board's proposal. Global governing body World Rugby will decide the 2023 competition's destination in November 2017 - and Ireland are comfortably the first of the three competing nations to map out their detailed hosting plans.

cost of waste disposal charges at council sites could tip the scales further in favour of fly-tipping. The cost of disposing a bag of refuse is due to rise by fifty cent to €4.50. To date in 2016, some 557 cases of illegal dumping have been investigated under the Litter Pollution Act in Co Kerry, with 59 on-thespot fines issued. “Fine Gael councillor Bobby O’Connell is seeking “a door-to-door survey” asking people what they do with their rubbish. He said this was a less costly alternative to other dumping-prevention measures,” adds the report.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE? It’s possible 200 planets, capable of hosting life, could have heard signals from Earth, says TREVOR O’DONOGHUE AT THE start of the 20th century an Italian by the name of Marconi began experimenting with wireless telegraphy. Soon after, wireless telephony and radio broadcasting were developed. Since those early days, humans have been pumping out radio, television and communications signals from our planet in an ever-increasing quantity and strength. Like a wave that travels outward when a stone is thrown into water, radio and TV signals travel by electromagnetic wave at the speed of light in an ever-expanding sphere away from the Earth. Theoretically, anyone with a powerful enough receiver on another planet would be able to eavesdrop on us. So how likely is this, and if they are listening, are they coming to visit? Our earliest communications have been travelling at the speed of light away from Earth for over 100 years. Within that time, they would have passed in the order of 15,000 stars, about 1000 of which are similar to our own sun. Our best guess is that one in five of all sun-like stars have Earth like planets in orbit around them, at the correct distance from their sun to have liquid water and therefore be capable of supporting life. So that is a possible 200 Earth-like planets, capable of hosting life, that could have heard our signals. Since we have only one example of life in the universe, we don't know if it's common for

Siptu to ballot members for strike action on pay life to arise. It could be that Earth hosts the sole sample of life in the universe, and we are the best the universe can come up with. Either way, predicting how common life is on Earth-like planets, and how often intelligent civilisations develop, is guesswork. But being optimistic and picking figures at random, let's say life arises on one out of every 500 Earth-like planets and intelligent life arises once from every 2000 examples of life. This means that intelligent life arises just once in every million of those Earth-like planets capable of supporting life. Given that our estimate is just 200 Earth-like planets capable of hosting life, I wouldn't be rolling out the red carpet just yet in preparation from an eavesdropping ET. On the off-chance that someone has heard our chatter, it would take an eternity to get here, assuming of course, they haven't developed the warp drive! •Feeling curious about the world around you? THE Siptu National Executive Council has authorised ballots by members for industrial action and strike action, on public service pay. The union had flagged its intention to begin a ballot unless the Government announced a timeline for talks on pay. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions had asked Siptu to defer the proposed ballot to allow talks to take place. Following that request by Congress, Siptu will ask their negotiating committees to ballot no earlier than December 1. This follows a request to defer a decision for two weeks to allow exploratory talks. In a statement issued on Thursday evening, Siptu said it had recommended acceptance of extremely hard choices during the difficult years since the economic collapse, but had always made it clear that they would take action to regain lost ground when circumstances changed. Siptu is the country's largest trade union, with 60,000 public sector members.

Wintry weather takes hold ROAD users have been urged to beware as wintry weather is affecting road conditions around the country, with further snow showers forecast. Met Éireann has warned of falling temperatures over the next few days after some sleet and snow showers. There will be further wintry showers tonight and in the coming days. Tonight, these will be heaviest and most frequent in the west and north with isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures will be 0C to 3C with frost and icy stretches.

Kerry County Council (KCC) and Killarney Municipal District (KMD) have completed a Traffic Management Study for Killarney Town. This Traffic Management Study has, at its core, sustainable transport initiatives with measures set out to enhance the town centre environment. The need for additional car parking, on the periphery of the Town and on the incoming radial roads into the Town, was identified as a requirement to reduce the traffic circulating in the Town Centre area. The Traffic Management Study has outlined a variety of short term, medium term and long term recommendations. The purpose of this Expression of Interest and Market Sounding is to identify possible sites for this additional car parking and to explore the possible financial parameters within which such additional site acquisition might be progressed with private sector interests. Potential Car Parking Sites It is envisaged that the additional car parking requirement could be provided in a number of possible ways, as follows: • Offering for sale to KCC and KMD sites suitable for car parking, provided that they are in line with the requirements of the Traffic Management Study. • The offering of suitable car parking sites for use by KCC and KMD facilitated by an agreed commercial arrangement such as leasing, joint management or other agreed methodology. • Enhancement of existing KCC and KMD car parking sites, using an agreed commercial arrangement. This could include the provision of multi-storey car parking, supplemented, if necessary, by other commercial activities. Expression of Interest/Market Soundings Proposals Interested parties shall provide information on the following basis:• Parties with sites for sale should identify those sites and confirm that appropriate Land Registry mapping and legal documentation confirming ownership of same will be provided if requested. The possible costs to KCC and KMD in acquiring such sites should be outlined in broad terms. • Sites being offered for leasing, joint management or other such arrangements should be clearly identified and confirmation should be given that appropriate Land Registry mapping and legal documentation confirming a legal interest in same will be provided if requested. Proposals in relation to such sites should also include the broad financial parameters within which the arrangement with KCC and KMD would be progressed. • Proposals for enhancement of existing KCC and KMD facilities should identify the location of such sites and provide a broad outline of what is proposed to achieve that enhancement. This outline would describe the extent of additional car parking being provided, the nature and extent of any ancillary commercial requirements and the broad outlines of a commercial proposal outlining the costs to KCC and Killarney KMD in progressing such an arrangement. Kerry County Council and Killarney Municipal District Assessment Incoming proposals will be considered on the following basis: -

Garden Magic Perfecting your winter garden The first frosts of winter have been and gone, taking with them the last of the summer bedding, says Debby Looney

THE compost heap beckons, what better way to recycle what was in pots and beds? Rake leaves up from your lawn, they too can go on the compost heap. If you have lots of fallen leaves – you are fortunate, as they are nature’s gift! Put them on a separate pile, save them for a special occasion! Compost from leaves is incredibly nutritious for plants, so use it in your vegetable garden. If you are gathering leaves from under rose bushes, it is best to dispose of them, as they carry diseases such as blackspot. In the garden, one of the best plants for winter colour has to be Pernettya mucronata. Its bright pink or white berries last all winter, and are great to use in flower arrangements. The plants are evergreen, and sucker, so give them a little space. They don’t grow very high though.

Willows are also plants I would not be without. Many of us have wet gardens, and planting willow as a living fence not only creates a wind barrier, but also dries the soil out sufficiently to grow other plants. In addition to this, willows have the most beautiful colours of bark, ranging from yellow to black. Paths and patios can do with a good scrub before they become too slippy over winter. Ideally a power washer will do the job, but products such as Mosgo and Patio Magic will also do the job. In the vegetable garden you can still sow broad beans, they will act as a green manure over the winter, protecting the soil. Mighty Mon pupils dress to impress and raise cash for charity THE pupils of Presentation Monastery in Killarney showed their creative flair as well as their civic spirit by holding a charity fancy dress party at the school. This week they presented the proceeds of the Halloween event to Lotte Lyne presenting the charity she set up in memory of her son, the Stephen Lyne Foundation. “The foundation is fundraising to implement a program called Roots of Empathy in three schools in Killarney, ourselves, the Holy Cross Mercy National School and St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen,” said Presentation Monastery principal Colm O Súilleabháin. In addition, the annual Killarney Rotary Evening of Wine & Art in The Malton on November 24 has the foundation as its main beneficiary. “All money raised by tickets sold through the schools will go directly towards the Roots of Empathy programme,” added Colm.

Citroen Dispatch gets WRC treatment EVs too quiet for comfort

PAUL NAGLE and Kris Meeke are making their movie debut in a new short film created by Citroen to showing off the benefits of the all-new Dispatch delivery van. Hollywood, here we come? Maybe not, but Kris and Paul will be centre stage in Monte Carlo in January in a full WRC Citroen prepared car. The video shows Kris and Paul tackle a purpose-built rally stage near the Silverstone F1 circuit in the UK. Showing surprising agility, Meeke manages to coax the Dispatch into lurid drifts while, along the way, Paul demonstrates some of the van’s more mundane features like its Bluetooth hands-free calling. (YouTube search: Citroen Dispatch gets WRC treatment)

IN A normal world, it is usually better to be quiet than to be noisy. However, in a direct reversal of normal requirements controlling how rowdy a motor vehicle is allowed to be, cars in the future could – by law – be required to make more noise. Indeed, new regulations slated for introduction in the US will require that normally stealthy conveyances such as electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids are actually noisy. Under these new regulations, which may be introduced in some shape or form in other countries, cars would require external speakers retro-fitted to improve their safety. The new rules will require the emission of a noise range between 50 and 53 decibels when reversing, and between 53 and 56 decibels when driving forward at speeds up to 10km/h. Up to 20km/h the noise output would increase to between 59 and 62 decibels to as much as 67 decibels at speeds up to 30km/h. Of course the next question concerns the quality of the sounds: It’s easy to make a noise as loud as you want, but loud noises are rarely pleasant. It’s unlikely that a lover of Beethoven would find the staccato blast of an AMG Mercedes pleasant to listen to – and vice versa. You can see an opportunity for Spotify to jump in here to fill this space. 18.11.16 Killarney Advertiser

BMW 6 SERIES GT SPY PICTURE A SLEEKER 5 Series Gran Turismo is on the way – except it won’t be called 5 Series. BMW’s 5 Series GT will become the 6 Series GT when its replacement arrives some time in 2017. Expected to be more handsome vehicle than the current car, the 5 Series-based mega hatchback will sit on a new, weight-shaved (-100kg) platform, referred to as OKL within BMW. This platform will eventually extend through the BMW range from the 3 Series right through to the new 7 Series. Confused? You aren’t alone. BMW’s naming conventions have been flipped and flopped over the past 18 months leaving us scratching our heads in confusion. Although it picks up the 6 Series naming, the new BMW is clearly 5 Series-based and shows elements of the more conservative saloon at both front and rear ends.

It’s the wheel deal for vintage car fans

DEDICATED members of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club enjoyed a top-class day out recently when they embarked on a fun journey across the county bounds for what could be considered the perfect Sunday drive. There were some spectacular vehicles on show when the engines purred to life at the Travel Inn in Fossa at 10.30am and the convoy of mechanical beauties headed towards Ballyvourney, via Rathmore, Millstreet and Clondrohid, with a pit stop for breakfast in An Crúisin Lán Café in Ballyvourney. The next stop for souvenir photo opportunities was Ireland’s highest pub at the Top of Coom before the club members kept a date with other car enthusiasts and friends from Muskerry Vintage Club at the Kerry Way in Glenflesk. New members are always welcome to join; contact the club secretary on 087-3381842 or visit www.killarneyvintage.com for further information.

Kerry and Dublin GAA stars join forces at Spa

Mullins Cup 2016 At the Spa GAA Hop Ball Fundraiser in the Torc Hotel, Killarney last Friday night were, front, Michael O'Donoghue, Donnchadh Walsh, Darren O'Sullivan, Dara O Cinneide, Donie O'Sullivan, Ciaran Kilkenny and Evan Cronin, back, Liam Kearney, Tadagh Hickey, Andrew Garnett, Paudie Mahony, Michael Glesson, Brian Finton, Dan O'Donoghue, Ivor Flynn and Michael Foley. SPA GAA CLUB held a brilliant and unique fundraiser for Coiste na nÓg branch of the club last Friday night in the Torc Hotel. Joining the fun were Dublin and Kerry GAA stars Brian Fenton, Ciarán Kilkenny, Darran O'Sullivan and Donnchadh Walsh sharing the stage with some of the Spa players who have proudly donned the green and gold over the years! The event was excellently hosted by Dara O Cinnéide with MC Jim Gleeson,

and sponsored by Simply Suits Killarney. “Well done to the organising committee of Ivor Flynn, Mike O'Donoghue, Andrew Garnett, Tadhg Hickey and John O'Donoghue and a big thank you to everyone who supported this event,” said club spokeswoman Anne Holland. “It was a great night of entertainment with a few laughs and memories – and who knows maybe even a transfer is in the future!”

THE semi-finals and final of the Mullins Cup were played at Murphy’s Bar on Monday. In the first semi-final Laura Keane, Dublin, overcame Breda Kelliher, Glenflesk, and in the second semi-final Helen O’Neill, Tyrone, beat Marie Leahy, Tralee. “The final was a top-class game,” according to a spokesperson for Murphy’s Bar. “Laura retained her title without losing a leg in any of her games. It is the first time a four in a row has been won in any of our tournaments – a new record for Murphy’s darts. “Overall the standard was very high and we look forward to seeing all you ladies again next year. Watch out for Laura Keane!”

Aquila makes a splash to celebrate quarter-century A WHOLE host of customers of all ages dived into the celebrations that unfolded as The Aquila Club at The Gleneagle Hotel marked its 25th anniversary. The leisure centre hosted an open morning on Saturday, showcasing its facilities. The centre, boasting a 25-metre pool, children’s pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, was officially opened a quarter of a century ago by the then-Taoiseach, Charles Haughey, on November 8, 1991. The Aquila Club has since evolved into a hub for fitness enthusiasts and families of all ages as well as providing a base for The Gleneagle Squash Club and Killarney Tennis Club. Managing the centre since it opened, Eamonn Quigley said: “Maurice O’Donoghue’s vision for this leisure centre was that it would be one of the best in the country and provide a fantastic facility for the people of Kerry. “It’s hard to believe we are open 25 years. Today we see many of the kids who learned to swim here in the '90s now bringing their children swimming here.” The Aquila Club also hosts swimming classes and clubs for children of all ages. The tiniest tots, along with a parent, can try out a session with Water Babies – Ireland’s leading baby and toddler swim school. Water Babies conduct swimming classes at The Aquila Club on Wednesdays. The Little Ducklings Club and Little Stars are both swimming clubs for children aged between two and four years, while The Seals Club and Crocodile Swim Class are for children aged from five to ten. Private swimming classes for both individuals and groups are also available.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the opening of The Aquila Club Leisure Centre in The Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday were Margaret O'Donoghue, Patrick O'Donoghue and Eamonn Quigley who has managed the centre since the opening. Has the O’Donoghue Cup lost its magic? THE second O’Donoghue Cup semi-final takes place this Saturday (Spa v Rathmore, Fitzgerald Stadium at 2pm) and with two Killarney teams still in contention there should still be a great amount of local interest in East Kerry football’s showpiece competition. There’s no doubting its historical significance; with success in the County Championship generally beyond the ambitions of most clubs in East Kerry, the O’Donoghue Cup has often been the pinnacle in terms of championship football for many local footballers. But with only two different winners since 2004, and a frequently drawn-out schedule that runs into December, how can players be expected to stay motivated?

In the past twelve years, only Crokes (nine times) and Rathmore (three) have lifted the O’Donoghue Cup. Legion threatened to break that run in the recent past but defeats in three consecutive finals means they’re still looking for their first title since 1976. Gneeveguilla (2003) and Currow (1998) will have fond memories of their triumphs and Glenflesk had a hugely successful period between 1994 and 2001 when they won it five times, but all of these victories seem like a long time ago now. Kilcummin, who frequently challenged between 2003 and 2008, haven’t won the competition since 1973. If Spa manage to beat Rathmore on Saturday and then Crokes in the final it will end a twenty-seven year barren run in the tournament. There were

five different winners of the O’Donoghue Cup in the 80s but there have only been five different winners since then. Crokes have won sixteen of those twenty-six finals. At the start of the year you would have said that only three teams, Crokes, Rathmore (who were on for three-in-a-row) and Legion (beaten finalists three years running) had a realistic chance of winning the O’Donoghue Cup. By the time the tournament started, Legion had already endured a disastrous league campaign and on form had very little chance of going all the way. That’s basically a twohorse race before a ball was even kicked. Now consider Spa. Having played their final County League game at the start of September, they then had to wait three weeks to play their first fixture in the O’Donoghue Cup. Even the most ardent Spa

Rugby News & Views with Liam Murphy WHAT another hectic weekend last weekend in the rugby world. First up, Munster hosted the Maori All Blacks at Thomond Park in front of yet another capacity crowd, in terrible weather conditions. The atmosphere was electric and the Maoris set the tone with a rousing Haka. Prior to commencing the Haka, four players including the captain Ash Dixon stepped forward to place a Jersey adorned with the letters 'AF' in in front of the Munster squad, a nod towards Munster's fallen hero, Anthony Foley. An inspiring Haka followed and Dixon then handed the jersey to Axel's sons Tony and Dan. What an emotional sight to see and the respect shown by the Maoris was awe-inspiring. Munster proceeded to beat the Maoris

27 points to 14. Every Munster player really stepped up and it was good to see some Academy players get a first cap and Tommy O'Donnell lead from the front. Well done to Rassie and the lads. Ireland took to the pitch at the Aviva with a much-changed team to that which beat the All Blacks in Chicago the week before. Joe Schmidt gave six players their first cap and we saw Tralee RFC and Connacht man Ultan Dillane start his first competitive match for Ireland. Between scoring a try and earning the man of the match, he really made us all very proud here in Kerry. A future Paul O'Connell in my eyes! Next up it’s the All Blacks again. Can we repeat the heroics of Chicago?

Closer to home our seniors travelled to Fermoy in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup and had a great win. Our youths had a great weekend with U14 and U16 teams winning. Our U18 team is building and rugby in Killarney is stronger than ever. With over 100 children playing each Saturday morning in the minis, Rugby is going from strength to strength and this is down to the hard work of all coaches at each age group, the parents who support and travel and those playing the game week in week out and all involved in the club at every level. Remember, we are having our 80s V 90s night tonight at the Grand. Great fun guaranteed so pop along and have a great night of fun and nostalgia!

supporter would have given their side very little chance of winning the competition this time out so it must have been difficult to motivate the players in the first place. Having defeated Scart, they then had to wait a fortnight to play Legion in the quarters where they put in an excellent performance which would have given the players a big boost. But it has now been six weeks since that Legion game. That’s six weeks of training in October and November, without any competitive football, to prepare for a game that in all honesty they’re expected to lose, and if they win they get to play Crokes in the final. In December. Of course the lack of competitiveness or bizarre schedule won’t bother the Crokes or Rathmore too much if they win again. But for the rest of us it might take some significant changes, both on the field and off, before the O’Donoghue Cup is something to look forward to rather than dread.

tRiViA Since 1980, six players have made a league appearance for both Manchester United and Arsenal. Name them? Frank Stapleton, Viv Anderson, Andy Cole, Mikaël Silvestre. Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck.

It’s becoming more and more difficult to retain interest in the East Kerry Championship, writes Adam Moynihan

We got relegated to Division 2, we saved our County Championship status alright so we’re senior again next year which is always good, but we lost to Glenflesk in the first round of the O’Donoghue Cup. Very unfortunate. A: You marked me in a junior game earlier on in the year. How do you feel you did? G: Fairly bad. Adam Moynihan’s pace was a bit too much for Gavin O’Leary to handle.

A: If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? G: Conor McGregor, Ruby Walsh and…[thinks] throw down Mike Tyson. A: Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? G: Cricket maybe. A: What’s your least favourite sport? G: Baseball.

A: Ah stop. How would you rate Kilcummin’s gear out of 10? G: The jersey colours are a five but the gear itself is nice. Maybe an eight.

A: What’s your favourite moment in the history of sport? G: When Séamus Moynihan captained Kerry in 2000.

A: Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? G: Noel Duggan.

A: Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? G: Tinder! No, don’t say Tinder. Snapchat.

A: Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? G: James Devane.

A: Too late. What’s your favourite emoji? G: The monkey with his hands over his eyes.

A: Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? G: Mike McCarthy.

A: What was the last film you saw? G: Home Alone: Lost in New York. It was on last night.

A: Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? G: [laughs]: Myself. A: Who’ll be the next player from your club to play for Kerry? G: Shane Murphy. A: Oh! Would you rather captain your team to an O’Donoghue Cup or captain Kerry to an All-Ireland? G: Probably an O’Donoghue Cup because Kilcummin haven’t won it since 1973. You’d get a lot more recognition for winning the O’Donoghue Cup than winning an All-Ireland for Kerry. A: If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? G: Scartaglin. I’d have a better chance of starting out there. A: What’s your proudest sporting moment? G: Winning the U-21 County Championship, in 2011 I think it was, with Kilcummin/Rathmore. We beat Legion in the final. A: What’s your most embarrassing sporting moment? G: We were playing Kerins O’Rahilly’s in a County Championship game. Now I actually wasn’t playing myself, I was sitting on the bench, and Ian Devane scored a goal to put us a point up. I jumped up inside in the dugout in Fitzgerald Stadium and cracked my head off the top of it. I had to get twelve stitches. I was the only player to get injured that day and I wasn’t even playing.

A: Any good? G: Very good. The Home Alones are probably my favourite films of all time. After Shawshank. A: What’s your favourite album? G: Wagon Wheel by Nathan Carter. A: What’s your go-to number when a sing-song kicks off? G: The River by Garth Brooks. A: Who’s the most famous person in your phone? G: Holly Carpenter [laughs]. Genuinely! A: What would you have for your last meal? G: Myself and my housemate Quags would share a pizza from Piccolo. A: Where’s the best food in town? G: The best proper food would be the Flesk Restaurant because my mom works there. The best fast food is Den Joes. A: Who would play you in a movie about your life? G: Adam Sandler. A: Why? G: Because he’s a character like myself. A: Can you tell me a joke? G: Whatever you do, always give 100%, unless you're giving blood. A: Nice one, Gav. G: See you later!

A: Which intercounty footballer are you most like? G: Paul Galvin because I’m very stylish.

CROKES QUALIFY FOR MUNSTER CLUB FINAL Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on the Munster Club Senior Football Championship semi-final

DR CROKES qualified for the Munster Club Senior Football Championship final after defeating Loughmore-Castleiney 1-12 to 0-9 in the semi-final played at Dr Crokes pitch, Lewis Road on Sunday last. In the other semi-final Waterford champions The Nire caused a major surprise when they defeated Carbery Rangers, the Cork representatives, 2-15 to 1-13, after extra time.

opportunity to score a goal that they needed so badly to compensate for Colm Cooper’s earlier goal. There was a lot of fouling by both sides, particularly in the second half which resulted in 13 cards being issued. This eventually led to the dismissal of Tomás McGrath and John Ryan for double yellows. Fionn Fitzgerald and Liam Treacy were also black carded.

Semi-finals are there to be won to gain a passage to the final and that was uppermost in the minds of Dr Crokes’ supporters as their side struggled through, rarely producing the fluid passages of play that has been the hallmark of their displays to date. They benefited from a number of the decisions by Cork standby referee James Birmingham, who took the place of Conor Lane, the appointed referee and none more so than in the 24th minute when Liam McGrath had been fouled. The ball broke forward and Brian McGrath was clear inside the Crokes defence with only Shane Murphy to beat. It looked like a certain goal, but the referee failed to allow the advantage to McGrath, so they had to settle for a point from a free. Clearly the advantage that accrued to the Tipperary champions should have been allowed and quite rightly they were very annoyed to be denied the

POOR SHOOTING From the outset it was clear that the Tipperary men were a very enthusiastic and fit outfit showing scant respect for Crokes traditional slickness of play. John and Noel McGrath did very well at midfield against Eoin Brosnan and Ambrose O’Donovan and their backs were able to break through and carry the offensive in to the Crokes half of the field. However, their shooting was very poor as they frittered away some glorious opportunities to score. Out of their tally of nine points Liam McGrath scored six from frees. Nearly all of the team are hurlers and this was apparent as they shot for goal, having worked so hard to carry the ball up field in some great passing movements. CRUCIAL MOMENTS The two crucial moments in the game were the sixth minute when Colm Cooper picked up a great pass from

Kieran O’Leary and knifed his way through the opposition coming in from the stand side, before unleashing a rasper of a shot and there was nothing that Dominic Brennan could do about it. It was a classic goal from the maestro. Apart from him and Daithí Casey none of the other Croke forwards made any real impression. Indeed it wasn’t until the second half when Crokes brought on three of their younger players, Jordan Kiely, Micheál Burns and Tony Brosnan that the forward division made an impact on the scoreboard and in their general play. The other game changing moment was in the 24th minute when the advantage was not afforded to Brian McGrath. John Payne and Gavin White were outstanding in the Croke defence and they did most to prevent the opposition from recording a higher scoring dividend. HALF-TIME At half-time Crokes led 1-5 to 0-5. It would have been a fairer refection of the state of play if the sides went in level at half-time. Liam Treacy scored an early point just after the start of the second half and it looked like Crokes lead would not be sufficient to carry them through. However, Crokes vast experience from winning at this level stood to them as they kept that little bit ahead for the rest of the game. The defence tightened up with Gavin White making great bursts out of defence setting up some vital scoring opportunities. The young guns on the Crokes team took

full advantage adding on those points for a six-point winning margin, which flattered the winners. THE NIRE This display would not be enough to see off the Nire in 10 days’ time, so Pat O’Shea will no doubt plan for that Munster final. That final will probably be played in Páirc UÍ Rinn, or Mallow. Crokes are always very keen to win this Munster title because the Munster Cup is the Michael O’Connor Cup, in remembrance of former great Crokes player and administrator, Michael O’Connor. The Ross Road man was chairman of the Munster Council at one stage, before his untimely death. Killarney RFC

U14 Killarney 39 - 12 Killorglin. While the rain stayed off for the match the ground was wet underfoot but the pitches held up well. With a wet ball the emphasis was always going to be on doing the basics well. Team captain Padraic Talbot led from the outset and got over the line early for a try with more from Darragh Cronin, Donnacha Grealy and a number for the fearless Thomas Clifford. Changes were made in majority of positions with a number of first “caps” for some of our younger warriors who got their first taste of playing on a full pitch and really stepped up. Killorglin never gave up and were rewarded with a brace of tries. Also best wishes to Liam Randles who is out recovering from an injury. TRAINING Grappling on Thursday evening 5:45 and training on Saturday morning in Aghadoe at 11:30am. No match next weekend. U16 Travelling for an away game is never easy, and last Saturday was no different as we were hosted by Listowel. Killarney pressed for long periods and it was at the 25 minute mark that Dion O’Neill pounced on a loose ruck ball to score. Cian Murphy converted to give Killarney a half time lead of 7-0. Listowel made several changes at half time, and pounded killarney’s patient defence, but to no avail. Killarney responded well, and on the 45th minute, Cian Murphy’s cross field kick, followed by a Killarney ruck rewarded captain Richard Wallace a try, from close in. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Again in the 50th minute Murphy put in a sweet kick cross field, ably gathered by Evan Smith, who scored in the corner, to leave the score at 17-0. With 10 minutes to go and the game won, the challenge was to leave the fixtures hosts scoreless, In fact with time nearly up, Richard Wallace hacked through a loose ball, to score in the corner, final score 22-0 to Killarney.. Next game at home next Saturday v Kanturk. U18 Killarney hosted Tralee last Saturday at Aghadoe, which was a hive of activity due to the Minis training and the U14’s match taking place also. Tralee are a very strong side and sit 3rd in the league with 4 wins to date and the team featured 3 Munster Academy players. However, Killarney are improving with every match and our try came from Alan Lynch with Kieran O’Connor converting and adding a penalty conversion. As

killarney notes always captain Dylan McCarthy led from the front and the lads played superbly particularly in the first half against one of the strongest teams in the group. A special mention must go to Ben Howard who had an exceptional game in the center. Next up it’s a trip to Mallow next Saturday. SENIORS Another away trip to East Cork for Killarney. The opponents this time, Fermoy RFC. From the kick off, Killarney dominated in all aspects of the game even after losing our captain Ger Moynihan to injury early on. Replacing Ger was John Paul Kissane, and he did not disappoint with a fantastic showing at hooker. Ferocious rucking and ball carrying with supporting runners on every play was the theme of the day. It was a team performance that was in the offing and Killarney did not hold back. Fast line speed ball and consistent rucking made sure that quick, clean ball was presented to No. 9 Paul O’Sullivan on every occasion which provided a dominant platform to attack from. The line out and scrums were functioning superbly on both attack and defence. Killarney scored two tries in the first half. A quick tap for a scrum penalty set Colin McCarty on his way and he crashed over the line to put Killarney on the score board. Half way through the second half Killarney found themselves in a similar position after a great break by out half Matt Lane and some intense breakdown play lead to another hard ruck gave Paul O’Sullivan clean quick ball. With the ruck at the base of the post Paul used the rules of the game to great effect and touched the ball off the base of the post to give Killarney their second try of the game. The try was converted and another penalty added just before half time. The score, 15-3 Killarney. Killarney started the second half with phenomenal ball carrying from man of the match Paul Moynihan, which set the tone on every forward attack. Fermoy found themselves with more possession in the second half, scoring a try to bring the score back to 10-15. This only re-energized Killarney who brought on some fresh legs, TJ Brosnan and David Corlett, with David proving particularly troublesome for Fermoy with a number of half breaks. These breaks helped Killarney push up the pitch and win a penalty in a very kick able position for Paudie Sheahan putting some daylight between the teams. With less than 10 mins on the clock Fermoy responded with one more try after a quick tap free kick award from a Killarney scrum. With the score now 25-15 Killarney finish the game in the same manner they started, putting pressure on the Fermoy try line attacking until the very end. MINIS There will be no minis next Saturday, the 19th however we will be hosting our round of the West Munster Blitz on Saturday the 26th and will welcome teams from Kenmare, Castleisland and Iveragh. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club

AGM The Club AGM was held on the evening of the 10th of November, and as there were no elections necessary to fill any vacancies, then the attendance was smaller than would be expected. The meeting was “chaired” by Louise Langan, who was the chairperson of the Club Council for 2016. All reports were read, and were duly passed,so there were no major contentious issues, the only minor one related to the proposed change to the 10th hole on Killeen, but by a substantial majority in a show of hands it was decided to leave the hole relatively unchanged. Arthur Hanley, the outgoing Club President, said his “goodbye’s” and offered his deep appreciation for the honour of acting as Club President for the year, Arthur concluded by Welcoming Breda

Duggan as the Club’s incoming President to replace himself at the Executive table, and departed. Breda Duggan thanked the Ladies Club for bestowing the honour of The Presidency upon herself, and admitted that Arthur would be a hard act to follow. We all wish Breda the very best in her role as our President for 2017, and no doubt Breda will bring her own talents and personality to the role. CHRISTMAS HAMPER The AIB sponsored Christmas Hamper for handicap’s of 13 and over was played on Mahony’s Point on Sunday the 13th of November. The “shotgun start” time-sheet was full with 96 contestants participating. Scoring conditions were ideal, and a good score was very much “on the cards” so to speak, and the gentleman who stood out amongst all of the others, was none other than octogenarian Sean O’Donoghue, affectionately known within the Club, as “Sean the castle” his score of 42 points was a clear winner, and Sean will be a most popular winner when it comes to the presentation evening. Runner up was Dan O’Leary with 41 points, and in third place was Con O’Mahony with 39 points. Prize-winners were as follows. 1st Sean O’Donoghue(21) 42 points, 2nd Dan O’Leary(15) 41 points, 3rd Con O’Mahony(22) 39 points, 4th Rory McCan(16) 39 points, 5th Paddy Looney(24) 39 points, 6th Gerard Walsh(13) 39 points, 7th Frank Reen Jnr.(16) 38 points, 8th John Somers(19) 37 points. Standard scratch was 38 points. Christmas Hamper for 0-12 handicap will be played on Killeen on Sunday the 20th of November.

Killarney Athletic

RESULTS Fai Junior Cup Killarney athletic 2-4 Abbeyfeale. Our senior A’s bowed out of the FAI cup after a cracking tie with limerick side Abbeyfeale on Sunday afternoon. There was very little to separate the sides throughout the game with all players on view giving their all. We took the lead on 29 mins when Lukas headed home the opening goal but our joy was short lived when the limerick boys equalised 3 mins later and took the lead on the stroke of half time with a well worked goal. 15 mins into 2nd half we equalised when a free kick from Will Courtney deceived everyone and was bundled in by Gary Moynihan. Abbeyfeale then went back in front when a ball failed to be cleared from the athletic box and was well finished by abbeyfeale. As athletic chased down the equaliser we were caught on the break and with 5 mins remaining abbeyfeale wrapped up the tie. We wish them all the best in the next round. Hard luck to our boys who will hope to continue the good form into the league and cup. DENNY DIVISION 1B Killarney Athletic B 0-1 Ballymac Celtic This game should have been over by halftime. Athletic were well on top and missed 2 penalties in a half that we should have had 4 or 5 goals but athletic didn’t finish off numerous chances they had. Pretty much the same in the second half but ballymac scored with 5 minutes left on the clock despite Aaron quills best efforts in goal. Athletic have no excuses.

YOUTHS LEAGUE Killarney Athletic 1-1 Listowel Celtic The youths played their first home game of the season in Ferndale last Saturday with a re shuffle of the team due to absenteeism of a few players. Athletic started brightly and hit the post in the first 10 minutes and had numerous chances only to be denied by the Listowel keeper. Listowel took the lead through A Jack Sheehy corner when it deceived all and sneaked in at the near post. Into the second half and athletic got an equaliser through influential midfielder Luke O Donoghue with a 20 yard shot into the top corner to share the spoils with Listowel. Clearly evident was lack of match fitness and attitude. U16 KERRY SCHOOLBOYS AND GIRLS SOCCER LEAGUE Camp Juniors FC 2-3 Killarney Athletic AFC A top of the table clash away to Camp on a beautiful crisp morning saw both teams give it their all and not wanting to lose valuable ground to each other in the race for the league. Athletic were marginally ahead with possession in the first half and made it count with two quick fire goals from the head of Liam Kelliher and Harry Potts. Such was the tempo of the game that Athletic missed the chance to make it 3 and Camp went down the other end to score with the last kick of the half to tilt the momentum to the home team. Into the second half and camp got their just rewards with a free kick that deceived the blue army defence to draw level. Inspirational man of the match Keith Suter took it upon himself to restore our lead with a well taken goal from an acute angle. Camp tried with all their might in the dying minutes to get a goal but the blues defence held out. A hard earned 3 points and the blues remain unbeaten in the league with possibly the hardest 3 away games played. Training Monday night 8-9. FIXTURES Saturday 19th November Moriarty’s Centra U11’s Killorglin Afc v Killarney Athletic 2pm Daly’s Supervalu U13 Div.2 Ballyheigue v Killarney Athletic 12-30pm Killarney Plaza U15 Premier Killarney Athletic v Killarney Celtic A 1230pm Sunday 20th November Fenit v Killarney Athletic 11-30am QUIZ AND PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARDS Venue : Killarney Oaks Hotel Time : 8pm This Friday Night sees the player of the year awards presented at our annual Quiz Night. Killarney Celtic

40TH ANNIVERSARY The club is celebrating its 40th Anniversary on Friday, November 25th, Killarney Avenue Hotel at 8.30pm. FAI President Tony Fitzgerald will be the Special Guest, plus others to be announced. Tickets available from all club officers. We have uploaded snapshots of our history on our facebook page. CONGRATULATIONS Well done to the Kerry U16s who beat a previously undefeated Limerick Desmond 2-0 last weekend. Congratulations also to former Kerry player Rian O’Sullivan on a man of the match display against Germany’s U18s,

scoring a brilliant goal for his country. RESULTS FAI Junior Cup: Listowel Celtic 1 Killarney Celtic 6 An absolutely scintillating display saw us come away from Pat Kennedy Park with a very convincing win. Pa McGrath put us in front and Stephen Hayes doubled our lead. Listowel hit back with a goal but Cathal O’Shea restored the two goal advantage before setting up Wayne Sparling for the fourth before going on to complete his hat-trick. FAI Youth Cup: Rathkeale 5 Killarney Celtic 0. An understrength Celtic gave it everything but were simply outclassed on the day. Comhgairdeas and best wishes going further to Rathkeale. U14 Premier: Killarney Celtic 0 Camp Juniors 2. An excellent game with both sides showing great quality, but it was the visitors who made the crucial breakthroughs. U14 Div One: Inter Kenmare 5 Killarney Celtic B 3. Again a real top notch game between two well-matched teams. Simon Coffey, Erin Moloney and Mike McCarthy were the Celtic scorers. U12 Girls: Killarney Celtic away to Mastergeeha and Inter Kenmare The girls opened their season with a cracking blitz, superbly hosted by Mastergeeha. Killarney Celtic defeated Mastergeeha before drawing with Inter Kenmare. The players particularly catching the eye in the Mastergeeha game were Aine Devlin, Aileen O’Brien, Lucy O’Sullivan and Ruby Gaffney. The Inter – Killarney Celtic game was a cracker with Inter leading 2-1, Aimee Coffey on target for us, before Celtic equalised late on through Aideen O’Brien. Ellen Leech and Sarah Cooper also did well. U12 Prem Three: Killarney Celtic B 1 Park 6. Park are a very strong side and proved it with some lovely soccer, but Celtic gave them a harder battle of it than the scoreline would indicate and can be very proud of a really good display capped by a superb goal from Naco Zulatuigi. FIXTURES Munster Junior Cup Area Semi-Final Killarney Celtic at home to Listowel Celtic, Sunday, 11.30am The club were delighted with the great support away in Listowel and, with the visitors determined to exact revenge, that could well be an important factor again. There will be extra time if necessary. TATLER JACK EAST KERRY MINOR A CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS Firies proved the stronger when they took on Currow in the first of the Tatler Jack East Kerry Minor A Championship Finals, last Saturday, in Currow. Firies got off to a dream start with a goal early in the game. Two goals before the break meant the visitors led 3-7 to 0-7 at half time. Currow fought back in the second half but the margin was too big and Firies advanced to the Final on a Full time score of Firies 3-12 Currow 1-10 The second minor A championship semi final between Gneeveguilla and Dr Crokes, on Sunday was a closely matched affair. The sides recorded a goal each and a scatter of points saw Gneeveguilla lead 1-7 to 1-4 at the break. The second half was nip and tuck and the teams were level at the end of normal time, Gneeveguilla 1-12 (15) Dr Crokes 2-09 (15) putting the game to extra time. Two Dr Crokes goals in extra time proved the difference between these 2 evenly matched teams. Dr Crokes progressed to the final against Firies, on Sunday 20th November at 2pm on a final score of Dr Crokes 4-11 Gneeveguilla 1-16 (AET) EAST KERRY U21 CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL Rathmore came out on top of this keenly contested quarter final in the East Kerry U21 Championship, in Derreen, despite playing the majority of the game a man light. Legion built a three point lead in the opening half, with both sides finding the net, Rob Leen for Legion and Shane Ryan for Rathmore. Score at the break: Killarney Legion 1-5 Rathmore 1-2. Killarney Legion maintained a lead for much of the second half and with the man advantage it appeared as though they had the edge. However, Rathmore kept plugging away and a lovely Mark Nagle goal, followed by a brace of points gave Rathmore a three point lead. In an exciting finish, Killarney Legion leveled with a goal. It looked like extra time was looming but Rathmore won a free 50 yards out to the right of the posts. Rathmore midfielder, Donnacha McCarthy, fired over a monster score with the outside of his right, ensuring victory for Rathmore. Final score: Rathmore 2-8 Killarney Legion 2-7. This result means that Rathmore are away to Dr Crokes in the East Kerry A Championship Semi Final, while Legion have a bye to the B Final, on the 4th December against the winners of Gneeveguilla V Firies, the previous Sunday. Fossa GAA

LOTTO 13th November 2016 Numbers drawn were 3, 21, 25, 26. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €11,400. SENIORS Our seniors played Na Gael in the Division 4 County League final on Sunday in Milltown. This was a very exciting affair with the outcome in the melting pot right to the end. Fossa started well with points from Donald O’ Sullivan and Tadhg O’ Shea, then in the 8th minute, Colin Myers pulled off an outstanding save from Ian McCarthy as he looked certain to score for Na Gael. Kevin McCarthy kicked a great point from distance but Na Gael were always dangerous and lead by three points after 15 minutes. Fintan Coffey was having a storming game in the middle of the pitch and kicked a fine score in the 21st minute, this was our best period of the game and soon afterwards Paudie Clifford scored a great goal following a quick break from the defence. The same man was on hand

in the last minute of the half to score another brilliant goal after some great work by Daniel O’ Keeffe, this left Fossa in the driving seat at half time on a score of 2-05 to 0-07. In the second half, Na Gael took over and controlled proceedings from the start and had reeled off five points without reply after 10 minutes. While Fossa defended heroically, they were finding it difficult to penetrate a very organized Na Gael defence and the fact that our only two scores in this half came from frees by Tadhg O’ Shea tells it’s own story. Perhaps they were feeling the effects of their effort in winning last week, they had a chance right at the end of a goal but it wasn’t to be and Na Gael held on to win on a scoreline of 0-15 to 2-07. While they will be disappointed to have lost this one, both players and management can look back on a magnificent and historic year for Fossa GAA Club. They have been promoted to Division 3 of the County league, they won the Fr. Galvin Cup and they are County Junior Champions for the first time in the history of the club. They have given their supporters some memorable days out and hopefully they can continue to build on the success of this year in the coming season. Team- Colin Myers, Colm Walsh, Paddy Sheehan, Anthony Wharton, Kevin McCarthy, Mark Dennehy, Daniel O’ Keeffe, Fintan Coffey, Colin Davidson, Mikey O’ Shea, Lorcan Daly, Paudie Clifford, Tadhg O’ Shea, Donald O’ Sullivan(C), Daniel O’ Connell. FOSSA GOLF SOCIETY Fossa Golf Society had our Christmas Hampers outing to Waterville golf links on Saturday. The course was in great condition and the weather stayed fine all day. Best on the day was Mark Bowe who came away with first prize with a fantastic score of 42 points. In 2nd place was Seamus Kelly, 3rd Paddy Looney, 4th Pat Chawke, 5th Teddy O’Sullivan and 6th Pat Clifford. Front 9 was won by James Curran and back nine by Rory McCan. The outcome of Golfer of the Year was also decided at the outing and this went to our Captain John O’Mahony after a titanic battle with James Curran all season. The presentation of prizes was held in the Golden Nugget on Saturday evening along with the society AGM. At the AGM Stuart Graham was elected Captain for 2017 and Mick Clifford elected

SENIORS Gneeveguilla seniors were defeated by Dr Crokes in the O’Donoghue cup semi final. Thanks to players team management and everyone who helped and supported our senior team this year. AGM Gneeveguilla GAA AGM Friday 2nd December at 8pm sharp. MINORS Gneeveguilla minors played Dr Crokes in East Kerry Championship on Sunday morning in Gneeveguilla. Gneeveguilla opened the scoring with Brian Brosnan and Jamie Brosnan both scoring inside the first two minutes. Dr Crokes fought back and a goal from Shaw low into the corner got Dr Crokes right back into the game. Crokes kicked the next three points unanswered before Gneeveguilla fought back. Points from JJ Herlihy and John O’Leary free kept Gneeveguilla in contention. Gneeveguilla midfielder JJ Herlihy rose highest for a kick out a fed a perfect pass to Thomas Fleming who hammered the ball into the Crokes net. A free from Naughton was canceled out by Jamie Brosnan and John O’Leary points to give Gneeveguilla the half time advantage at 1-07 to 1-04. Gneeveguilla started the second half brightly and kicked four unanswered points. Dr Crokes found their rhythm again and Jerry Cronin was forced to make a point blank save from Shaw. Dr Crokes were not to be undone however as Courtney played a long ball into Griffin who shot low into the bottom of the net. Patrick Warren fisted a ball over the bar to steady things for Gneeveguilla but Naughton and Courtney were able to get the vital scores to level things at full time 1-12 to 2-09. Gneeveguilla came out in Extra time and Jamie Brosnan and Jack Cremin kicked the opening scores. Crokes then won a penalty on the stroke of half time extra time and Courtney stepped up a put the ball low into the right hand corner to make it 1-15 to 3-10. As the second half of extra time wore on both teams tried the get the vital score to win the game and Dr Crokes were the team to get a goal as the ball trickled into the net after a goal mouth scramble. Gneeveguilla responded with a John O’Leary point but referee Jimmy O’Shea of Glenflesk blew the final whistle and Dr Crokes advanced on a scoreline of Gneeveguilla 1-16 Dr Crokes 4-11.
