"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

‘My daughter had to endure two days on a hospital trolley’ A YOUNG Killarney woman endured a wait of over 30 hours on a hospital trolley at University Hospital Kerry after feared complications following an operation days earlier. The 20-year-old’s mother, Lotte Lyne, highlighted the incident in a bid to draw attention to the ongoing trolley crisis which she believes is putting lives at risk. “My daughter had a routine procedure last Monday in University Hospital Kerry. She was sent home the same day as is the norm today after keyhole procedures,” Lotte told Killarney Advertiser. “The first couple of days she was recovering fine but took a turn for the worse on Thursday. I brought her to the doctor and he told me to take her straight to A&E in

Tralee.” Lotte and her daughter arrived at the Accident & Emergency department at around 11.30am, she added. “My daughter was so unwell that a porter had to wheel her into A&E in a wheelchair,” said Lotte. “She was seen by the nurse reasonably fast, about 20 minutes after we arrived. After taking her details he actually wanted me to take her back out into the waiting room in the wheelchair, I refused point blank and said she was too sick to sit up and needed to lie down. “I was then directed into the busy hallway of the A&E and shown a trolley she could lie down on. She spent the next two days on this trolley in the busiest corridor of the

A&E. She did not get to see a doctor till 5.30pm on Friday and the CT scan that was then ordered by the doctor did not get done till the following day at around lunchtime, then we had to wait till around 5pm for results.” Lotte said she believes a “massive lack of efficiency within hospitals in Ireland” is putting lives at risk. Adding that doctors and nurses “do their best under difficult circumstances”, Lotte concluded: “The situation in our A&Es is putting lives at risk and there is no doubt in my mind that lives have already been lost, and lives will continue to be lost as long as the situation remains the same.”

EDITOR'S VIEW THE town looks pretty magical after the hardworking elves on the Christmas in Killarney committee transformed the streetscape into a winter wonderland this week. Well done to all involved, who promise us that tonight will see an even more special atmosphere prevail with the switching on of the Christmas lights followed by the first of five Magic Parades. As this year’s parade is bigger than ever, traffic delays are expected on all approach roads to Killarney so make sure you leave plenty of time to arrive and get a good

position for viewing the fun. “Christmas comes once a year, so don’t be late as Santa is nearly here!” the committee told us. “We are advising people to arrive in plenty of time to enjoy the pre-parade entertainment.” Entertainment will kick off from 5.30pm on Main Street, and there will be a wheelchair-accessible area at Market Cross. BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING BONANZA WHO doesn’t enjoy a good shopping spree – and all the more so when there’s a bargain to be had? Well, Killarney’s retailers have joined forces for a special Black Friday shopping weekend. A whole host of shops are slashing prices either for Black Friday or for Black Friday and also Saturday. Watch out for window posters in participating stores and see the fantastic discounts on offer! John McEnery, chairperson of the Killarney Chamber Retail Group, said: “The aim of the Killarney Chamber Retail Group is to promote Killarney as a leading shopping destination. We aim to encourage people to shop locally and to highlight the fantastic shopping experience that is available in Killarney.”

THE downhill cycle track planned at Glenflesk was highlighted at this week’s meeting of Killarney Municipal District. In reply to a request for an update from Councillor John Sheahan, the council stated: “This project previously received grant funding under a previous Fáilte Ireland programme. The project related to a private development and the funding was awarded to Kerry County Council to facilitate same, subject to a number of conditions including agreement between a number of parties in relation to the operation of the project.” The council was not satisfied that the grant could be drawn down in compliance with complex procurement requirements which relate both to the construction an operation of the project. A further grant application is required to proceed this project.

Question We have not been able to manage our mortgage repayments and other loans for a long time. The bank keeps sending us legal-looking letters and at this stage we can’t bear to open them. Is there anyone who can help? Answer

Yes, there is a new scheme of aid and advice for borrowers in home mortgage arrears. This scheme is part of Abhaile, the national Mortgage Arrears Resolution Service. It provides a range of services to help you to deal with your situation, including financial advice, legal advice and insolvency advice. Panels of qualified and regulated professionals have been set up to provide services under the scheme. It is co-ordinated by the Department of Justice and Equality and the Department of Social Protection and is operated by the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) in conjunction with the Insolvency Service of Ireland (ISI), the Legal Aid Board and the Citizens Information Board. You will qualify for advice and assistance under the scheme if: •You are insolvent – this means that you are unable to pay your debts in full as they fall due and •You are in mortgage arrears on your home and •You are at risk of losing your home (for example, if your mortgage lender has initiated repossession proceedings or indicated that they plan to do so; if they have said that they consider you to be non-cooperating; or if they have asked you to consider selling or surrendering your home) and •The costs of staying in your home are proportionate to your reasonable accommodation needs To access the scheme, you can ring the MABS Helpline: 0761 07 2000 (9am - 8pm, Monday - Friday) or contact your local MABS office. Read more about the Scheme of Aid and Advice on Home Mortgage Arrears on justice.ie and on backontrack.ie. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Grace hits all the right notes with new album TALENTED singer Grace Foley will be launching her album Home To Kerry next Thursday, December 1, at 8pm in The Malton Hotel. This album has been a labour of love for Grace and features some well-known ballads and two Christie Hennessey songs. Speaking about the music of the late Tralee singer, Grace said: “I would love to have had the opportunity to sit down with Christie Hennessey and talk to him about his wonderful songs. His lyrics are so heartfelt and they really touch somewhere deep inside my heart.” Grace began her training at age 14 with the late Aine Nic Ghabhann and continued to study with James Nelson of The Celtic Tenors and with Virginia Kerr at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She is currently working as both a singer and as a singing teacher. Grace teaches privately and at the Killarney School of Music. She is co-leader of the church folk group 'Risen' alongside Paul O’Raw at the Church of the Resurrection and is also co-leader of the Killarney School of Music choirs alongside Jayme Linehan. Grace will be joined on the night of her launch by MC Frank Lewis of Radio Kerry, traditional musicians The Linehan family of Millstreet, pianist Santa Ignace, members of Dóchas drama group and the multi-talented Tony O’Flaherty. “I am incredibly lucky to be joined on stage by some dear friends of mine on the launch night. In fact, one of the musicians, Jayme Linehan, is not only one of my best friends, she is also going to be my bridesmaid!” Grace recorded the album with Tony O’Flaherty at Sonas Recording Studios. “There is almost no instrument he can't play and no problem he can't fix! Two other musicians also feature on the album, namely Padraig Buckley of the Killarney School of Music, who played the Killarney whistle, and the very talented violinist Niamh Varian-Barry.” Entry on the night is €10 for adults and €7 for children. Tickets will be available to buy both on the night and also at Variety Sounds in Killarney.

Tributes flow as Killarney mourns popular businessman THE town was deeply saddened by the untimely death of popular local businessman Padraig O’Brien. Padraig, of Lios Na Greine, Clash, Lissivigeen, Killarney, and formerly of Dirreen, Killarney, and Stack O'Brien Optician, New Street, Killarney, is survived by his wife Eavan and their children Rian and Muireann, his parents John and Mary, his sister Alison, parents-in-law Sean and Mary O'Callaghan, uncles Michael and Dan Joe, aunt Kathleen, and extended family and wide circle of friends. Warm tributes were paid to Padraig, who died peacefully on Friday following a short illness, at his funeral in St Mary’s Cathedral on Monday. Padraig had a passion for golf and was a former captain of the Murphy’s Golf Society. Padraig qualified as a dispensing optician in 1994 and he built up a successful business, Stack O’Brien Optician.

8 TIPS FOR DRIVING AT NIGHT 1. Get your eyes examined, at least once every two years to make sure they are healthy and your prescription is up to date. 2. Use anti-reflective spectacle lenses such as Essilor Crizal Prevencia or Zeiss DriveSafe to eliminate glare. These are also available to those who have perfect eyesight but who have difficulty seeing at night. 3.Keep your spectacle lenses clean. 4.Make sure that your windscreen is clean, inside and out. Newspaper is good to use on the inside to eliminate streaks. 5. Check that your wiper blades are working efficiently and replace them if not. 6. Aim your headlights correctly and keep them clean. 7. Dim the lights on your dashboard. 8. To avoid the glare from oncoming traffic, focus your gaze on the left edge of the road as they pass

Art’s the way to do it A BURST of colour illuminated a frosty evening as the Killarney Rotary Club Evening of Wine & Art brought the festive social calendar to an exciting start on Thursday night. The 13th annual event, in The Malton Hotel, took place in association with Daly’s SuperValu. Daly’s kept the wonderful wine flowing and served delectable sweet and savoury treats, with Killarney Brewing Company supplying enticing beers. Killarney Rotary President Angela O’Connor paid tribute to all involved in the event. “We organised the evening in aid of a host of deserving local causes, both on the charitable and sporting fronts, namely The Stephen Lyne Foundation, The Killarney Cardiac Response Unit, Football For All, Killarney Swimming Club, The Kilcummin Defibrillator Group, Fossa Rowing Club, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Coolick and Tiernaboul Schools, the Order of Malta and Presentation Secondary School Music Programme.” Angela also thanked the artists involved. “None of this would be possible without the numerous local artists who have been working away over the last year and who deserve our support and encouragement for their talent.”

THE History of the Irish Volunteers in the Killarney Valley (1913-1916) or Óglaigh Chill Áirne 1913-1916 opens a new chapter on Irish history. From the pen of well-known local historian and Fossa parish priest Canon Tom Looney, it is published as as part of “the Echoes of Easter” Irish language series. Their company, which was one of the very first in Ireland, grew from An Seabhac’s Gaelic League Class of November 28, 1913. Fr Tom Looney’s study tracks the progress of those founders, names the 53 armed and mobilised on Easter Sunday 1916. Following the Rising 1,863 Volunteers were imprisoned in Frongoch Camp, Wales, including five Killarney men. Twenty-one photos and Frongoch autographs help show their story. This local history publication in Irish by Coiscéim, costs €7.50, and is dedicated to the author’s late mother Alice, to Aghadoe-born Mercy Sister Thaddeus Collins and Killarney’s Conradh na Gaeilge. Dr Tim Horgan will launch it in Gaelscoil Faithleann, The Park, Killarney, on Monday, December 5, at 7pm. Donie O’Sullivan will launch it in the Meadowlands Hotel, Oakpark, Tralee, on Friday, December 9, at 7pm. Fáilte roimh cách.

Let’s rally to Lions’ roar to help put food on tables this festive season KILLARNEY Lions Club has joined forces again with Tesco to help highlight this year’s Christmas Food Appeal. The club members are asking shoppers to make a big difference to someone’s life during the festive season by donating a food item during a two-day appeal which will take place on Friday, November 25, and Saturday, November 26, in Tesco, Deer Park, Killarney. During the two-day project a shopping list with suggested non-perishable food items will be available to all customers as they enter their local Tesco store. “Top of the list are teabags, breakfast cereals and tinned goods, with shoppers urged to add an item to their shopping basket and drop it into the Lions Club trolley in the store on their way out,” said Con Stack, Killarney Lions Club president. “The Killarney Lions add these goods, to foods that they purchase, pack and distribute over Christmas to Killarney’s most needy.” Killarney Lions Club liaises with local public health nurses and checks the list carefully to ensure that those that need help the most receive it. “We are giving them essentials to ease the burden that Christmas can bring to some families,” said Con.

Kerry Stars host dazzling night out KERRY STARS were shining as the Special Olympics Club hosted its 10th annual black-tie ball in The Malton Hotel last Friday. Following a mulled-wine reception, guests tucked into a five-course dinner after which there was dancing and entertainment until late. “It's always amazing to see these wonderful Kerry Stars athletes in all their finery.... when usually we see them in tracksuits!” said Emer Corridan of Kerry Stars. Once the guests were seated for dinner, Kerry Stars member Martina McCarthy welcomed everyone and introduced the MCs, Emma Doolan and Niall "Botty" O'Callaghan. After the starter course, the Munster regional chairperson for Special Olympics Ireland, Eoin O’Beara, spoke of his involvement in Special Olympics and of the positive effect the Kerry Stars club has had since its beginning on other clubs, both in Kerry and nationally. “The Kerry Stars have consistently supported the Munster Region and we are very thankful for this,” he said. “They give support through providing volunteers for floorball events held here in Killarney – this is despite floorball not being one of your sports in the Kerry Stars.” He added: “Interestingly, there are 10 athletes from Munster who are regularly training here in Killarney who will be representing Ireland in the World Winter Games in Austria next March.” Eoin’s message for the night was for the Kerry Stars athletes and their families to remember that “nothing is impossible”. “The Kerry Stars are such a progressive club, this year by taking on golf skills and were the first club to host an Introduction to coaching session in September 2016,” he added. Singing chef LuciPiano TrapaPhoney (aka Bryan Carr) and Celtic Steps also entertained the gathering. “One of the night’s highlights was seeing the Kerry Stars athletes give an impromptu dancing performance alongside the Celtic Steps dancers!” said Emer. “The Deerhunters kept everyone dancing followed by DJ Botty until late and as usual at the ball, the dance floor was packed for the night.”

Kenya keeps calling for Killarney man

Eddie Sheehy pictured with young people helped by the Kenya Education Project.

AFTER another successful year of fundraising and volunteering in the village of EmbulBul the Kenya Education Project wishes to thank all who generously supported the project again in 2016. Killarney man Eddie Sheehy, who travels to the village of EmbulBul in Kenya each year with the project, said: “This year the project was able to support 50 young people through school sponsorships, paying their school fees and ensuring they receive a hot meal each day.” This year some past pupils returned to Brother Beausang school to share their experiences with final year students. “Their accounts of struggles to achieve an education were truly inspiring,” said Eddie. “One boy, Christantus was 14 years old in first class in primary school, persevered with his studies and now at the age of 28 is in second year of teacher training college. Some past pupils are being sponsored to pursue further education and will hopefully gain employment to provide much needed support to their struggling families.” Visiting the homes of the poor and marginalised is a central part of the work of volunteers who visit Kenya. “We see at first hand the harsh, challenging living conditions families face in trying to feed and educate their offspring,” said Eddie. “Shoes, baby clothes, adult clothes were given to needy families as well as financing the purchase of beds for four families living in terrible overcrowded conditions.” In July, volunteers Sharon Courtney and Denise Collins purchased new school uniforms and shoes for a large number of primary school students and paid school fees for some deserving families which helped ease their financial burdens. In September Katie O’Connell spent time visiting the parish feeding programme as well as volunteering in the school. At the feeding programme she befriended many of the children and listened to sad life stories from orphans, children with HIV and children of single parents. The project is financing the purchase of a new wood burning stove which will help in the preparation of food each day as well as conserving supplies of timber which cook the large containers of maize and beans.

KERRY LABOUR PARTY ELECTS ITS YOUNGEST-EVER CHAIRPERSON THE Kerry Labour Party met last Friday night and elected its youngest-ever chairperson. Luke Crowley-Holland from Kenmare was proposed by outgoing chair Dan Galvin from Tralee, who will aid the transition by taking the role of Vice Chair. Proposing Luke Crowley-Holland, he said, “It is time to make way for the younger generation, who are so enthusiastic and full of good ideas. Luke has shown his commitment to the Labour Party both nationally and locally and was a natural choice to help the rebuild the party after the last General Election.” Luke said job security and the tourism industry as well as a living wage were among the issues important to him. “I realise there is a lot of work ahead of me and the Labour Party to rebuild and regain our lost Dáil seat, but I am ready to help in any way I can,” he said. The meeting was attended by a dedicated corps of Labour members who were addressed by Brian McDowell, general secretary of the Labour Party. Other issues raised included the return of the Town Councils, and support for the preparation of a Bill to enact this. Also the members welcomed Marie Moloney’s continued clinics at Conroy Hall, a service freely provided by her. Officers elected were Fionnuala Sarsfield, secretary, Gillian Wharton Slattery, assistant secretary, Colin O’Connor and Tony O’Carroll, joint treasurers, Dan Kiely, international affairs, Gene Moriarty, PRO, Sheila Doherty, women’s officer and Marie Moloney and Sean McCarthy, joint organisation officers.

IT MAY be cold outside, but the plummeting temperatures are certainly no deterrent to Tiernaboul trio Niki McCarthy and her children Mischa and Oscar. They are already limbering up for the annual Christmas Day dip at Dundag they organise in aid of depression support organisation Aware. “I have now raised just over €30,000 for Aware since the dip started on 2009,” said Niki. Niki organises the event in memory of her sister Sylvan Money, who took her own life 12 years ago, aged just 26. “I wanted to do something that celebrated Sylvan’s life. This allows me to remember her and at the same time try to help others who may be suffering,” she said. “I would like to thank lifeguard Derek O'Leary, the Order of Malta who have provided the ambulance and first aid volunteers every year, the Franciscan Friary for their very generous donations, and MD O'Shea's and Daly's SuperValu who provide the refreshments.” The dip takes place at 11am. Mario ready to captain voyage to Killarney Mario Rosenstock tells Eve Kelliher what audiences can expect when he takes centre stage in the INEC next weekend NOAH’S ARK and Global Warming will be among several Biblical, sporting and politically influenced themes sailing into Killarney as part of the Mario Rosenstock Live show in the INEC on Saturday, December 3. The funnyman is looking forward to returning to the venue which he always enjoys playing. “Last time we brought the show to Killarney was just mega, in terms of the vibe,” Mario said. This show, which had five storming sellout night in The Gaiety, is a must-see, tackling, in hilarious fashion, subject matter that includes Global Warming, the Olympics, Brexit, and Donald Trump’s election campaign. “The show is probably the tightest and best we’ve ever done,” Mario told the Killarney Advertiser. “I’m looking forward to bringing something of a religious element to it, what with Danny Healy-Rae and Noah’s Ark and all sorts of Biblical ideas.” Expect Donald Trump-inspired sound bites to feature strongly. “We will be talking about how to Make Killarney great,” said Mario. Other popular characters showing a face will include “Ray D’Arcy” and “Miriam” with “Roy Keane”, “Jose Mourinho” and “Joan Burton” also having a say.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas SANTA CLAUS will be branching out on Thursday, December 1, when he pays a visit to The Brehon Hotel. There will be tasty treats, hot chocolate, mulled wine for Mom and Dad and lots of surprises in store.” The Brehon Christmas tree party is organised in aid of St Vincent De Paul and anyone who wishes to donate can bring new or unused toys to The Brehon on December 1 or make a cash donation on the day. Lissivigeen Community Alert to celebrate landmark birthday

Journeys back in time

Trip back in time: Pictured in 2000 are Kathleen and Tim Corcoran (back left) presenting the Pat Corcoran Memorial Shield from Lissivigeen Community Alert to four pupils of Lissivigeen National School Rosie Byrne and (front) Gavin Bastabelle, Nicola O'Connor and Aileen Kelly with Michael McAuliffe, Garda James Courtney, Sgt Diarmuid O'Shea, Garda Leo Randles, Det Pat Kelliher, Bernadette Noonan Principal, Christy Lehane and Pat Gill of Lissivigeen Community Alert at Lissivigeen National School.

THERE will be no shortage of help in blowing out the birthday candles when the dedicated members of Lissivigeen Community Alert gather to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The celebrations will take place on December 2 in the Torc Hotel, with entertainment by the Two Mikes. The current committee paid tribute to the two leading lights of the organisation in the early days, Pat Corcoran, RIP, and Pat Gill. The Community Alert is key to safeguarding the welfare of elderly residents in the area, added the committee. “This takes place throughout the year and is of course especially important in winter,” said Pat Kelleher. Since it was established, Lissivigeen Community Alert has ensured 25 alarms have been installed in the community.

It also, in more recent times, established a text alert system, with 250 participants to date. “This has been a very successful initiative in collaboration with the Gardaí,” added Pat But it is an organisation that spans all ages and all interests, throughout the area and across the generations. For instance, it has joined forces with the White-Tailed Eagle Project and has always spearheaded health and environmental-related projects.

Collaboration with school is a class act

THE team at Lissivigeen National School has always played a major role in the Community Alert. School principal Michael McAuliffe,

together with staff and pupils, have joined forces with the committee to organise educational days out and other events. “We introduced the Pat Corcoran Perpetual Shield at the school in 2000,” said Pat Kelleher of Lissivigeen Community Alert. “In addition, Lissivigeen National School also participates with the Community Alert in the St Patrick’s Day parade.” The school has enjoyed participating in educational days out, including a trip to the bog, with the Community Alert group, and in 2013 the latter organised a crossroads dance in conjunction with the school to celebrate the Gathering.

THE members of Lissivigeen Community Alert are known for organising hugely successful and memorable voyages including tours of Glengarriff and Gougane Barra. The group has also shown its passion for history over the years, with a tour to Cobh to explore its links with the Titanic. “In 2012, almost 50 people boarded a coach to Cobh to take part in the 100th anniversary commemorations of the sinking of the Titanic,” said Christy Lehane of the committee. “Travelling with us on the day were relatives both of the survivors and those who perished on the ill-fated liner.” Committee members Neily O’Sullivan of Upper Lissivigeen and Pat Kelleher had connections with passengers on the liner. Radio Kerry presenter Sean Hurley recorded his conversations with participants on the trip who shared their memories. “We were honoured that Jackie ‘The Farmer’ O’Sullivan took time out to join us on the expedition, having just celebrated his 100th birthday the previous week,” said Christy.

In celebration of a cultural hotbed

CONSIDERING many in the area are steeped in the cultural traditions of Sliabh Luachra, it is not surprising that Lissivigeen Community Alert has a talent for staging entertaining rambling house nights. At these events, held in the Torc Hotel, there is never a shortage of talented performers. This often involves storytelling and recitations from older members of the community. Jackie ‘The Farmer’ O’Sullivan delivered a particularly memorable recitation several years ago. Lissivigeen Community Alert has also produced a newsletter since 2001.

Rugby club lines out for trip back through the decades

THEY tackled the concept of time travel with aplomb last Friday as members of Killarney Rugby Club revisited the 1980s and the 1990s. The dress code included everything from legwarmers to shell suits as players, coaches and friends of the club converged on the Killarney Grand Hotel keen to evoke the decades that turned the spotlight on artists from The Bangles and Madonna to Nirvana. “The fancy dress night was hugely successful,” said Liam Murphy of Killarney Rugby Club. “It was fantastic to see so many people come along to support the club. Players, parents, coaches and friends of the club came along and some dressed up for the occasion. We had the Blues Brothers, Indiana Jones, Madonna and shell suits, glitter and anklewarmers were the order of the day as nostalgia reigned supreme.” Liam added: “The 80s music was declared the winner on the night and a fantastic night was had by all. A huge thank you to Helen Sheehan and the staff at the Killarney Grand for their hospitality and huge support.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Update following Fianna Fail Killarney Central Cumann meeting THE inaugural meeting of Fianna Fáil Killarney Central Cumann at Scotts Hotel was attended by a large number of new and existing members. John Brassil TD chaired this important meeting informing members to continue to bring issues to him through his Killarney Office which has been very busy since its opening. The following officers were elected: chairperson Moss Harmon, secretary Sheila Dickson and treasurer Tony Kenny. Councillors John Joe Culloty, Niall Kelleher, Norma Moriarty and Tom McEllistrim addressed the meeting and updated those present on the issues they are dealing with in the Killarney area along with answering queries from the floor. It was acknowledged by all on the night that while Killarney Central was the amalgamation of four Cumann those that the Cumanns were named after – namely Tim O’Mara and Fred Crowley – would not be forgotten. A series of talks/seminars will be held in the spring and autumn to tell their stories, details to follow.

Nursing staff disappointed at recent HIQA report THE Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) wishes to express the disappointment of the nursing staff at the implicit suggestion in a recent report by HIQA that nursing staff have been responsible for slowing the process in the movement residents of Cluain Fhionnan residential centre Killarney to a community-based setting. Since this process of change and transition has commenced over two years ago a tsunami of paper work including reports, plans and proposals has been given to staff to implement. During this time not a single extra HSE staff resource has been allocated to Ballydribeen, and when one considerers that 10 nursing staff that were originally assigned to Ballydribeen when it opened in 2001 but has since been reduced to seven due to cutbacks.

The HSE would have known that a considerable extra effort would be required to implement this programme of change and transition on the units. Restrictive practices was one of the big negatives in the recent report, which includes having some of the units locked via a keypad system. This is done to prevent some residents with limited understanding and comprehension aimlessly wandering off campus and getting onto the Killarney ring road, which is just minutes’ walk from Cluain Fhionann, thereby putting themselves in serious danger of accident or misadventure. Other restrictive practices referred to include locked kitchenettes – many of the residents would lack a comprehension of danger of such everyday situations such as boiling

water, hot cooker etc and to allow residents with diminished capacity coupled with often challenging and disturbed behaviour unrestricted/ unsupervised access to kitchens would result in injury and accidents. In relation to the term “special” used by nursing staff in relation to a resident, what the staff were referring to was the resident was on a one-to-one nurse special to prevent self-harm and the term used was a clinical and not a deregulatory term. The vast majority of the residents of Cluain Fhionann having high dependency levels, will only transfer to a community-based settings with substantial and sustained supports being put in place. Residents with patterns of challenging and disturbed behaviour would

require purpose-built specialised accommodation as well as 24/7 support and supervision. This is a reality which is often missed out on by the HSE and HIQA when highly aspirational plans are being put in place with low budgets and minimum staffing. HIQA has served a closure order on Cluain Fhionnan to the HSE, and the HSE are to draw up a final detailed closure plan. As any final closure plan will take some time to implement, it’s the staff desire to fully transition Cluain Fhio Cormac Williams, Psychiatric Nurses’ Association, Kerry, Via email

Universal Contour Wrap helps you get party ready

Let Sally put your festive memories in the picture

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains the benefits of the Universal Contour Wrap

A QUICK and easy way to lose inches, sculpt curves, detoxify, boost circulation and smooth the skin. Need we say more? This treatment is a must have for Christmas parties, weddings, holidays and any other time when you want to look your absolute best! The Universal Contour Wrap is a totally natural, effective and safe way to achieve excellent and lasting inch loss, detoxify the body, cleanse the skin and leave you feeling totally rejuvenated with wonderful smooth and silky skin. Bandages that have been soaking in a warm solution containing only natural minerals and sea are used to clad and reshape the body, lifting flabby buttocks, flattening the abdomen and generally contouring the figure. Once the bandages that have

soaked in the sea clay solution are applied to the body, the effect is that of a giant poultice. The treatment works by drawing out toxins from the fluid around the fat cells, whilst the bandaging technique works to compress and compact the soft fatty tissue, creating a smoother base. The process is not dehydrating one, you will not put back on the “lost inches” through drinking a glass of water. In fact, we can assure you of the reverse, we actually encourage you to drink plenty of water after the treatment to cleanse and flush your system through, and this can help to achieve further inch loss and tightening of the skin over the following few days. Call Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966 for bookings.

HeartBeat to help you cope with stress

REFLEXOLOGIST Margaret Bartley will talk to Heartbeat about relaxation and how to deal with those pockets of stress and fraught situations one can find in our lives coming up to and during the festive season. She will also look at the health benefits of aloe vera products. Meet Margaret at the Serenity Centre, St Anne’s Road, Killarney, at 8pm on Monday, November 28. All are welcome to this free event.

Salute to the sun at Gaelscoil Faithleann

DOWNWARD dogs and salutes to the sun are all the rage among a group of primary school pupils in Killarney. A school hall might be the last place you’d expect to find a group of dedicated yogis but there is plenty of enthusiasm on a Wednesday morning in the Gaelscoil Faithleann, Killarney, among participants in its weekly yoga class. “The parents council introduced yoga to the school last year with the full support of the principal, Proinsias Mac Curtain,” said Mary Carroll, secretary of the parents council. Each class has signed up for a weekly class for six weeks with Aileen Kingerlee. Aileen, who specialises in teaching children’s yoga, said: “Yoga has many proven health benefits for the mind and body, including increased stamina, strength, balance, co-ordination and flexibility. It creates a feeling of well-being, provides a sense of calm and the ability to stay centred in a fluctuating world. Good skills to learn as a child or adult!” Mary added: “We are delighted to organise and pay for this initiative and all parents have been very enthusiastic about it. They see their children enjoying it, and continuing to do the yoga poses at home, with ‘downward dog’ and ‘king cobra’ becoming part of their vocabulary. It is a great outlet for them and a chance to relax and switch off.”

TALENTED Killarney photographer Sally MacMonagle has been ensuring the festive season got off to a picture-perfect start for many families over the past fortnight. Now Sally is following up two hugely successful weeks of Christmas studio portrait sessions at Killarney Outlet Centre with a final festive photo session this Saturday, November 26. “There will be a special offer of €80 per family including 10 Christmas cards with a limited number of sittings available,” said Sally. The bespoke set featuring in the pictures is a wonderful attraction also and it was created by the team at Killarney’s new Christmas shop Deck the Halls, on New Street. “Liam and Orla created the set with their selection of unique Christmas decorations, along with a Seville pine Christmas tree,” said Sally. You can get in touch with Sally on 087-7202252.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

MATTHEW 24:37-44: The “coming of the Son of Man” can be applied to the end of the world, to the moment of death, or to any moment of grace. We are not given advance notice as to when any of these will happen, so the message is to be alert and ready. When have you found that your alertness meant that you were able to receive an unexpected grace (e.g. take an opportunity which presented itself, or respond to a hint from another person that you might easily have missed). One of the enemies of alert living is constant busyness. Have you ever found that being caught up in your own agenda makes you less sensitive to what is happening around you? Recall times when you paused in your relentless busyness and were rewarded by a significant interchange with another person, a moment of grace. You probably know the difference between being ready for a visitor and the unannounced caller who catches you unprepared. Let the memory of the discomfort of being caught off guard spur you on to a constant readiness for the coming of the Lord. John Byrne OSA, Veritas

ADVENT

YOU know that feeling of waiting for something or someone? It is a feeling of excitement or maybe anxiety. For most people, waiting is not a very popular pastime, it can be seen as a waste of time. If we allow it to, waiting can be a creative time, a time of high alert, where we may even be more aware of ourselves. Our senses are heightened especially when we are waiting for important news or results or waiting on a loved one to call or to arrive. Waiting is not always seen as a good thing but it can be a time for growth. And so, we enter into the season of waiting: Advent. The Gospel reminds us to be alert and use this time to prepare. What will our preparations be like? God is with us in many different ways, trying to catch our attention in the midst of our busy days. As we fight our way through the queues in the coming weeks, can we use five minutes, seven minutes, twenty minutes to stop, be still, to ask God to enter into our hearts and lives once more. Jane Mellett, Veritas

LIVING TRANSPARENTLY

HOW many of us can truly say that our lives are an open book? “Transparency” is a bit of a buzzword in the media these days. With every scandal that hits the headlines uncovering the corrupt practices of some public figure or another, our trust is shaken. When it is a person from whom we would have expected better, or whose actions have hurt countless others, we are left to ponder the whys and hows of it all – how could they live a double life for so long? Why did they feel the need? And how on earth did they think they would get away with it? But when we think about it, how many of us are living truly transparent lives? Do our outside selves always match our inner selves? We may be harbouring grudges or nasty thoughts about family members, friends, colleagues or acquaintances. Maybe we are cheating or being dishonest in some small way, or cutting corners in our work. It is likely that we have built up some habits or practices that we would rather no one knew about. In our second reading this weekend, Paul talks about the “things we prefer to do under the cover of the dark”, and urges us to “arm ourselves and appear in the light”. As we enter into Advent, it is the ideal time to examine our own lives – to come out into the light. Tríona Doherty

Contemporary and timeless Contemporary and timeless

WE WERE overwhelmed by the timeless quality of this modern and contemporary interior. The owners of the house, in East Kerry, joined forces with top-class Killarney interior architect Adrian McCarthy of Adrian McCarthy Interiors to create their dream living space. “The style of the house, and brief, was to create a modern and contemporary interior with a focus on timeless quality,” said Adrian. “I went to the client with my mood boards and after a couple more meetings we came up with the plan for the house - the client was really happy with the results and I would like to thank them for trusting my vision for the house.” Adrian used an eclectic mix of materials to create specific textures. “These included Silestone quartz and Jatoba flooring, as well as Farrow and Ball colours,” said Adrian. Enhancing the interiors are white silk curtain fabric, eye-catching acrylic dining chairs and a glass table. The cowhide chairs in the living room are among the spectacular and unique pieces Adrian sourced for the property. “I source one-off pieces throughout Europe,” he said. The stone wall and glass stairs are other talking points of this wonderful interior. “I supplied all the furniture, lighting, accessories curtains and blinds,” added Adrian. “The furniture in the bedroom was custom built by my team of cabinet makers and was designed by me.” Adrian McCarthy Interiors is located at National Tile Building, Woodlands Industrial Estate, Park Road; contact 085-1552815.

The Christmas Gift of music Sonos speakers are beautifully designed to fill your entire home with music. Use one simple app to stream different music in different rooms. Or play one amazing song all through the house. Grab your phone and take control of your music Not being the most technical of people I don’t normally rave about sound systems, but having bought some Sonos speakers I’m a convert. My main reason for picking Sonos was that it was wireless with no pesky cables running around my living room to ruin

the aesthetics and a set up that even I can do without asking my kids for help! You can also build your system over time adding speakers as you buy them. There’s a playbar and sub for your TV add two play ones and you’ve got a surround sound system, Epic sound for all your films, games and TV shows. And it streams music, too. Grace Notes THIS TIME NEXT YEAR

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on the transformation a year can bring to one’s life

I RECENTLY saw an ad for a new TV show hosted by Davina McCall titled 'This Time Next Year'. The premise of the show is that the participants have decided they are going to make a drastic change in their lives which will result in them having some sort of transformation by this time next year. The people were filmed one year ago and have been filmed again now, one year down the line. I was drawn to the show as soon as I saw the ad as I have often heard people say that they will be different in a year's time and I too have said it myself. I ask, why do we give it a year? Is it simply because a year seems like a long way off so this impending life change seems less daunting or is it because it really does take a year to make most of life's big adjustments?

I was very moved by one man on the show by the name of James Tannen. James had a very severe stammer all his life. This impediment really hindered his growth as a person. He always knew what he wanted to say but he just could not get the words out. He had already been seeking professional help for his stammer so I wondered what improvement he could make in just one year. James' goal was to be able to give a motivational speech at his old school. Breath control is massively important in dealing with a stammer so the audience could see him visibly try to get his breathing under control as he attempted to start his speech. Once he got under way he was simply amazing. Everyone should tackle their own personal stage fright. This fear may have nothing to do with public performance. Your fear may be the fear of change. Your fear may be the fear of failure. I too had those fears but I made a plan. I said I would make an album. I said I would share my voice again. I vowed that I would change. I made these promises “this time last year”... •Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

The Provocateur ‘‘WHY BUILD A WALL INSTEAD OF BUILDING A SHELTER?’’ SEAN THIBEAUD shares his thoughts in an article that won the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Weekend primary school essay competition MY NAME is Sean Thibeaud. I am a 10-year-old boy from Ardfert, Co Kerry. I have heard about the war in Syria and how some leaders think building walls to stop refugees from Syria jumping onto trucks because they might get hurt or the truck owners might get arrested or in trouble. How desperate must these people be to risk their lives and the lives of their children doing this to have a happy life. They are humans like us so why should they be treated different? So why build a wall instead of building a shelter and getting food and education? Why are they spending money on security instead of secure homes for children? Paying for barbed wire which hurts instead of doctors who heal. These people have been in overloaded rowing boats without oars hoping they will end up on a safe country. Only to be told “get out”. They Irish Navy are saving as many as they can, which makes me proud, but how many children have to die before the people in power come to realise war is a waste of time? When our politicians in Ireland lose their seat in the Dáil they don’t stay in power, so why should Bashar alAssad? There is no reason good enough in this world to bomb any village, town or city of people in any country. I do not enjoy knowing all this. Could you please do something to help and not let these refugees out in the cold. My mom says treat people the way you want to be treated. Show respect and you will be respected in return. I think the same goes for kindness. We need to stop all the pain, draw a line under it and move on. Fighting only causes more fighting. Imagine the children who are three, the war in Syria had been going on for five years; these kids don’t know their country without war. What did World War 1 and World War 2 achieve, nothing but pain and disrespect. We can all be a Hugh O’Flaherty, God has no country and there are no borders in life. So why should there be walls? Yours in hope for a peaceful future in our world.

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + A NATION ONCE AGAIN There is an opinion that our near neighbours are all at sea when it comes to Brexit and that they are making up policy as they go along. Recently, Nissan announced that not alone would they be staying in Sunderland but that production there would increase. Whispers of a “sweetheart deal” grew louder. Eventually, Greg Clark, the Business Secretary, revealed that Nissan was convinced to stay in the UK with a promise of no tariffs or extra bureaucratic burdens on the car industry. I find it difficult to believe that Nissan committed to Britain on the government’s assurance that it would seek a tariff-free deal with the EU for the British car sector. On the other side of the same coin, Change Britain, a group co-founded by Michael Gove and endorsed by Boris Johnson, claims 14 nations have publicly expressed interest in trade deals with Britain. So, which is it? Are they in or out? Our Minister for Foreign Affairs is perturbed by

remarks made by NI First Minister Arlene Foster, when she intimated that officials from the Republic were talking down Northern Ireland’s economy in their search for investment post-Brexit. He needn’t worry. I expect the IDA to be out there looking for investment and looking to benefit from the UK’s self-imposed difficulties but you don’t win friends by speaking ill of your neighbours. Ireland is at the heart of Europe. A leading Japanese businessman has warned Britain that Japanese companies have begun receiving offers to relocate elsewhere in the EU and are contemplating postponing investment decisions following Brexit. Ireland is open for business – north and south. A border, any kind of border, is unthinkable at this stage. Our agencies must push open the gates of opportunity. The words ‘open’ and ‘business’ should be emphasised and we should all be able to walk through that gateway of opportunity, together if possible.

Each student who was taking part collected sponsorship for the challenge, and they got a participation package from Conradh na Gaeilge including a t-shirt, a wrist band and a list of useful phrases to use during the day. At the end of the school day, students sang two

songs Falling Slowly and The Man Who Can’t be Moved as Gaeilge, and had a special audience of a group of Italian students who were visiting the school on the day. “It was lovely to hear the language being spoken so enthusiastically by students during the school day. Well done to all involved,” said teacher and school PRO Vivienne Buckley.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD ARE THERE STRATEGIES FOR EXTENDING OUR Ever since time immemorial humans have endeavoured to extend our natural lifespan, says Trevor O’Donoghue RECENT reports in the press have highlighted the sad case of a 14-year-old girl’s search for immortality and her fight to have her body frozen after her death. Her hope is that medicine will advance enough to allow her to be brought back to life, cancer free at some point in the future. Ever since time immemorial humans have endeavoured to extend our natural life span. In the Middle Ages, life expectancy was in the order of 40 years. By 1900 you could expect to live to around 59, and today average life expectancy has reached 80 years, give or take. The oldest human that ever lived has reached 122 years and the annual rate of mortality amongst any given age bracket e.g. over 80s, continues to fall as we extend our lives through modern medicine, diet and education. But what about pushing it further. Are there strategies that could be employed to extend our lives even further? One strategy that has proven successful in animal studies is calorie restriction. Reducing calorie intake significantly over an extended period, has been shown to increase life expectancy. We don’t know yet if this method can be successfully transferred to humans, but this hasn’t stopped calorie restriction devotees from adopting it. Scientists are currently studying the metabolic pathways that are used when the body is under calorie restriction in the hope of developing a drug that can mimic the effects of calorie restriction without the

Macroom bypass is ‘near shovel ready’ actual calorie restriction and associated dangers. Other research has focused on the role that DNA plays in ageing. It is now thought that managing the ageing process on a DNA level may lead to significant benefits in terms of life expectancy. Research on human cells in the lab, has shown that by extending certain parts of the human chromosome, called telomeres, scientists have managed to essentially turn black the clock on cell ageing. And finally, another interesting, rather wide-ranging and somewhat controversial approach is that of a Dr Aubrey de Grey who believes that the first person who is going to live to be 1000 has already been born. He believes that through the manipulation of seven aspects of ageing that humans will be able to pause ageing and essentially rejuvenate. For example, a 90 year old can be transformed into a 60 year old through treatment and this cycle can continually be repeated, in effect pausing ageing. Whilst we are not there yet, De Grey thinks it is only a matter of a time. Unfortunately for him, time is swiftly moving along. • Feeling curious about the world around you? THE long-awaited Macroom to Ballyvourney bypass is “near shovel ready”, reports Anne Lucey in the Irish Examiner. The report notes how “yellow jackets will be on the road in January” following Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin’s address to county councillors at a meeting in Tralee. Mr Griffin, who said he was the only government TD in the county, was among the five Kerry TDs answering councillors’ questions at a meeting of the county council, added the report. “The bypassing of the town of Macroom, on the N22, which will eliminate delays, is vital for Kerry people and for tourists and industrialists. It has been promised often, but not delivered, the meeting was told,” writes Anne Lucey.

Hundreds evacuated following forest fires in Israel HUNDREDS of people have been evacuated in Israel and West Bank settlements as fire-fighters battle a threeday outbreak of forest fires. Hot, dry wind is fanning the flames, which have reached the city of Haifa and forced the temporary closure of a major Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway. However, police said they had not determined whether any fires were started deliberately. Four people have been arrested in connection with a fire in the Jerusalem area. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the Palestinian men were expected to appear in court later on Thursday.

Colm Cooper would like to see the GAA do more to stop AFL clubs poaching BY SHANE STAPLETON COLM COOPER would like to see the GAA do more to stop aggressive AFL clubs and Tadhg Kennelly poaching players from Kerry, Mark O’Connor has become the latest export to Australia after signing up to Geelong while five more Kingdom youngsters were recently put through their paces at the AFL Europe Talent Combine in UCD. At a time when Dublin have begun to dominate in September, winning four of the last six All-Irelands, it’s a bad time for Kerry to be losing a huge prospect. Kennelly is the AFL Talent Manager and, after a hugely successful career with the Sydney Swans, also won an All-Ireland alongside the Gooch in 2009. “Obviously, we would love the likes of Mark O’Connor to be still be at home and other lads who have been up at trials in recent weeks but if you are talking to 17and 18-year-olds and the lure of going to Australia and signing a rookie contract and live as a professional, it is hard to compete,” said Cooper, who is back in a Munster SFC club final with Dr Crokes this weekend against The Nire of Waterford. If

they overcome that hurdle, he hopes to finally emulate his brothers Danny and Mark who won a club All-Ireland with the club. The 33-year-old would love to see the club season run off inside the calendar year and feels that county managers have too much power. He doesn’t see any quick solutions to the club-county divide. “I think there’s frustration certainly from the club people, because they don’t know when they’re going to be playing and they don’t know when their championship is going to commence again after the summer,” he says. “And then they don’t know when they’re going to have access to all their players. So that’s difficult for club managers to plan and they probably feel that, look, the club is what the GAA is all about, that’s what it’s built on, and we’re not getting a fair hearing here in many cases. “So maybe that’s where the frustration of the club manager comes from. But there’s two spectrums and I’ve been lucky to see both sides of it. When you’re with the county, you want tunnel vision on trying to achieve getting to Croke Park and winning an All-Ireland with Kerry.”

Garden Magic LET’S PROTECT OUR HERITAGE Debby Looney casts her eye over Killarney’s heritage trees and Ireland’s heirloom plants

THERE was a really interesting talk recently about the heritage trees of Killarney, hosted by the Killarney National Park and given by Aubrey Fennell. It is so wonderful to live in a place where we can see these beautiful specimens, for example the Ginkgo Biloba at the Mercy Convent, the ancient yew in Muckross Abbey, or the stately Sequoia in front of the Cathedral. The Ginkgo is an unusual tree, there are claims that some living specimens are 2,500 years old. Its common name is the Maidenhair tree, and it has distinctive fan-shaped leaves which often split. It is a tree well worth growing, as it is very decorative. Another tree I would recommend, if you have the space, is the Metasequoia, or the Dawn Redwood. It is a fastgrowing, deciduous conifer, with soft fernlike leaves which are a bright green in the spring, and a dark amber

in the autumn. Both trees have been found in fossils dating back 250 million years. However, trees such as chestnut, sweet chestnut and oaks, along with larch, pine and Abies, should not be forgotten! Poplars are fast growing, as are birch, and beech are surprisingly fast once they get going. If you have the space, plant trees – they produce the oxygen which we all need! In fact, one person consumes the oxygen produced by seven trees! I was recently given a gift of cut and come again cabbage, which is an heirloom plant, native to the West of Ireland. I am delighted with this hardy cabbage, which takes root easily from cuttings. It would be great if all enthusiastic vegetable growers which have these plants would share them, before they become extinct!

All welcome to help Killarney branch out on Monday KILLARNEY took part in a major tree hug earlier this year and now the community is being invited to branch out again. All are welcome to help support the town as it enters a competition for the European Tree of the Year 2017. Members of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society are behind the drive to put forward a special grove of trees in Monsignor O’Flaherty’s memory for the awards. “We have been encouraged to enter the O’Flaherty Memorial Grove at Muckross arboretum into this EU contest,” said Jerry O’Grady of the society. So how can you help? “Next Monday morning, November 28, at 10am, photographer Don MacMonagle will be doing a photo-shoot at the grove to accompany our submission,” sad Jerry. “We will have 50 students from the monsignor’s old alma mater (Presentation Monastery National School) but it would be great to have as many others as possible from the general Killarney community also in the picture. So, if there is anyone with 20 minutes to spare next Monday morning, at 10am, you would be most welcome to join us at the grove, which is reached easily from the Dundag car park or from the main Muckross garden. Why not make it part of your Monday morning walk in Muckross?”

CLARKSON: ‘I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW’ THE opening sequence of the long-awaited return of Jeremy Clarkson and company in Amazon’s new show The Grand Tour is fantastic. A gloomy Jeremy Clarkson exits a “BBC building” into pouring rain, handing his passkey to the waiting porter as he catches a taxi to the airport. Cue the opening sequence music – “I can see clearly now…” by the Hothouse Flowers, the symbolism behind using an Irish Rock Band after leaving Top Gear for punching an Irish producer is for another day, but pure genius. The Hothouse Flowers were handpicked by Clarkson and we can clearly see why. The lyrics are well placed with Clarkson’s symbolic transition from corporate micromanagement to the freedom of the wild west of California.

cles all traveling in the direction of a large crowd in the middle of a dry lake. As they make their way to the front of the posse they are greeted by an awaiting crowd with The Hothouse Flowers performing live on stage – what an entrance...

On landing in Los Angeles, the clouds lifted, a lonely stroll through a badly lit airport car park to discover an American icon does little to lift his sombre mood. As he takes to the highway in the new Mustang, the camera lifts over the front of his car to reveal May and Hammond chasing after him in two more Mustangs. As they reunite on screen you can nearly see them all shed a tear – maybe of relief – we’re back...

The show kicks off from there, it was business as usual with the BBC copyright constraints quiet evident but this didn’t stop the trio from poking the BBC legal team, itching to pounce – invited celebs that never get there, a race track that isn’t a race track with a mystery driver that isn’t a mystery.

As the trio drive off into the distance they catch up to an array of vehi-

unique approach. A collaboration they failed to do on Top Gear.

good or bad, you never get tired of that banter.

In conclusion, the show is a continuation of their politically incorrect banter with minor tweaks influenced by the BBC legal team. Some of the banter in the “tent” was scrappy but we’ll cut them a bit of slack on their first outing. However,

Most of us will be making comparisons to Chris Evans' Top Gear – without Evans next season they are already ahead but Matt Le Blanc and company vs Clarkson and company – no contest.

The episode, titled The Holy Trinity, presents the main event with Clarkson, Hammond and May testing the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and Ferrari LaFerrari in the Algarve using their 25.11.16 Killarney Advertiser

PETS/ANIMALS ANIMALS HUG: Homes for Unwanted

Greyhounds (CHY 19414), formerly Kerry Greyhound Connection, takes in, rehabilitates and finds homes for unwanted racing greyhounds. We are looking for people to help us by offering a foster home for a greyhound as a ‘half-way-home’ until we can find a permanent home for the dog. Fostering is a really valuable and ‘hands on’ way to be involved in greyhound rescue work. There is no cost to fosterers as HUG will cover all food and veterinary expenses. Please get in touch if you’d like to help. For further details please contact us on 087 9822695 or email homesforunwantedgreyhounds@eircom.net. Birthday remembrance of our loving mother Bunny (Mary) Fleming whose birthday occurs on the 27th November.

In loving memory of Donal Donie O’Shea late of Green Lawn, Killarney who died on the 26th of November 2013.

Happy Birthday with all our love, From here on Earth to heaven above, Never more than a thought away, Loved, missed and remembered everyday.

Good was his heart in friendship sound, Loved and respected by all around, A beautiful life came to an end, He died as he lived, everyone’s friend.

Love always Derry, Michael, Maria and all your family. xxx

BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE CLIFFORD

In loving memory of Margaret Brosnan, late of Ross Road Killarney who died on the 1st of December 2011.

In loving memory of Katie O’Shea late of Boulia Heights, Firies, Killarney who died on 1st December 2014.

God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you, And whispered “Come to me”.

She Is Gone You can shed tears that she is gone Or you can smile because she has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back Or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her Or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she’s gone Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, Be empty and turn your back Or you can do what she’d want: Smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

With tearful eyes we watched you, As you slowly slipped away, And though we loved you dearly, We couldn’t make you stay. Your golden heart stopped beating, Your tired eyes put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Sadly missed by your loving husband Con, Sean, Jeannette, Brian and Mary. Rathmore victory sets up final date with Crokes Spa are unable to pull off upset in O’Donoghue Cup semi-final, writes Adam Moynihan RATHMORE secured their passage to a sixth O’Donoghue Cup final in seven years with a 2-16 to 0-16 win over Spa in the Fitzgerald Stadium last weekend. Their opponents started well but couldn’t maintain the necessary level of performance for long enough and from the moment John Moynihan danced through the heart of the Spa defence and fired in his second goal ten minutes into the second half, the result was never really in doubt. The Killarney side raced out of the traps and racked up four unanswered points in the first five minutes. A free and a point from play by Mike O’Donoghue were followed by two excellent scores by Cormac and Evan Cronin and it seemed as though a shock might be on the cards. Rathmore responded well, however, and rattled

off three straight points to settle their nerves. Another O’Donoghue free, this one from outside the 45, was cancelled out by John Moynihan before Dara Moynihan restored Spa’s two-point advantage. Rathmore then went on another three-point run, Shane Ryan and two frees from Mark Reen giving them their first lead of the day with nineteen minutes on the clock. It looked very much like it would take a goal to put some daylight between the two teams and it was Rathmore who struck first in this regard, John Moynihan pouncing on a loose ball and applying a striker’s finish that was more Quarry Park Rangers than Rathmore GAA. Spa had a gilt-edged chance to hit back just moments later when O’Donoghue picked out Dara Moynihan with a superb longrange pass but the Kerry minor

star fired over from close range. Two outstanding scores by Cormac Cronin kept his team within touching distance as the half drew to a close and Rathmore went in two points to the good, 1-9 to 0-10. Reen and O’Donoghue each added a point to their tally early in the second but the game’s key moment came on the forty-minute mark when John Moynihan picked the ball up centrally around thirty-five metres from goal. The Rathmore marksman lined up a shot at the posts and with a drop of the shoulder gave a dummy solo that everyone in the stadium bought. He then carried the ball forward and gave another dummy solo, sending half the Spa backline to the shop at the back of the stand, before coasting in and firing an unstoppable finish beyond James Devane in the Spa goal.

Rugby news & views with Liam Murphy A WEEK is a long time in Rugby and fortunes can ebb and flow. This is certainly the case for our national side. Ireland hosted the All Blacks at the Aviva in Dublin last Saturday in front of a packed house. These matches are right up there with England or France 6 Nations games for atmosphere and this was no different. There was certainly an air of expectation from some quarters following our win over the Kiwis two weeks ago. But they were never going to roll over. It was an intense, attritional and hugely physical battle which saw the visitors run out winners. Lots of people were bemoaning the visitor’s tactics and referees performance but you can’t expect to win a game not scoring a try. We lost some big names

early on, and there’s an uphill battle ahead for Schmidt and co who play Australia next weekend. Last week Killarney made the headlines as Fitzgerald Stadium was shortlisted as a venue in Ireland’s bid to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023. This would be a dream come through for all rugby fans in the county and particularly those involved in the rugby clubs. It would be amazing to be able to showcase Killarney to a worldwide audience and this would have huge potential for tourism but as importantly for helping develop rugby. It would be truly amazing to watch a rugby match at ‘The Park’. Last Friday night we had a fantastic night at the Killarney Grand as we held a 80s V 90s

night to raise funds for the club. The Blues Brothers, Indiana Jones, Madonna and even Bosco made an appearance as everyone got into fancy dress and danced the night away. I can safely say the 80s won the night. Thanks to Helen at the Grand for their support and to the players, parents, coaches and supporters who came along. Finally, tomorrow our minis are due to host our Blitz when we welcome U7 to u12 teams from Kenmare, Iveragh and Castleisland. This will showcase the very best of children’s rugby and all are welcome to come along and enjoy the day. Proceedings kick off at 10.30am, weather willing. See you there!

That gave Rathmore a five-point lead and from there on in the outcome was fairly inevitable. Spa faded badly in the last quarter and will be disappointed with their starting forwards who failed to kick a single point in the second half (Mike O’Donoghue notched a number of frees but he was operating from midfield in the second period). In fact, substitute Craig Hickey kicked Spa’s only point from play in the second half and that came with just a minute to go. Rathmore must now prepare for an O’Donoghue Cup final against Crokes next weekend. It’ll be Crokes’ third final in three weeks following the demolition of Stacks in the league final and this weekend’s Munster final against the Nire, for which they are strong favourites. It’s a daunting task for Rathmore but they’re certainly capable of giving the Crokes a scare. Whether or not they’ll be able to complete a three-in-a-row, and spoil Crokes’ treble aspirations in the process, remains to be seen.

Smalltalk

Kerry and Legion forward James O’Donoghue talks to Adam Moynihan about Take That, a mixed 2016 and disappointing his fans in the Speak

A: James, thanks for talking to us. J: No worries. A: How’s the body? J: It’s alright. I got the two shoulders done so it’s taken me a good year to get over it but I feel good now for the first time in a long time. A: How would you rate 2016 out of ten? J: I’d give it a seven because of the work that I’ve done going into next year. If I was actually rating it on its own merits it’d be a zero. We had a nightmare with the Legion and I was dropped from Kerry… But I didn’t have to get surgery or anything so in terms of preparation for next year I’d give it a seven. A: Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? J: I’d go…Lyno. Jonathan Lyne. Every day of the week. A: Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? J: Shane Enright but I’d say he’s best on quantity rather than quality. A: Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with besides Gooch? J: That is a tough one. I would say… Marc Ó Sé. A: Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? J: Kevin Breen. A: Who’ll be the next player from Legion to play for Kerry? J: Cian Gammell. A: Would you rather captain Legion to an O’Donoghue Cup or captain Kerry to an All-Ireland? J: Legion. A: If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? J: [laughs] Killarney Celtic. A: If you had to play for another county, who would it be? J: Kildare. A: What’s your proudest sporting moment? J: Making my championship debut for Kerry. A: What’s your most embarrassing sporting moment? J: I missed a 14-yard free against Armagh in the league and the crowd started throwing things onto the field if I remember correctly. There was war! A: Where was this? J: Behind in Tralee! One of the lads was watching it in the Speak [easy Bar] and he said the whole place went ballistic. “That Legion ****!”

A: Which Premier League footballer are you most like? J: Moreno. That Liverpool left back. Terrible defender, bad haircut. A: If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? J: Gazza, Shane Lowry and Muhammad Ali. A: Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? J: Hurling! A: What’s your least favourite sport? J: Darts. It’s not even a sport. A: What’s your favourite moment in the history of sport? J: When Usain Bolt won his first gold at the Olympics. A: Do you have any nicknames? J: Fat James. A: Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? J: Twitter. A: Who’s your favourite tweeter? J: Rio Ferdinand. A: What’s your favourite emoji? J: The thumbs-up. That’s the only one I use. A: What’s the best show on TV? J: Only Fools and Horses. A: What’s your favourite album? J: What’s the Craig David one with that song [sings ‘Seven Days’]? Born to Do It! A: What’s your go-to number when a singsong kicks off? J: Take That. Never Forget [sings]. A: That wasn’t bad. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? J: Diarmuid O’Donoghue. A: What would you have for your last meal? J: Bacon and cabbage. A: Where’s the best food in town? J: Desire at the West End. A: Who would play you in a movie about your life? J: I dunno… Who would you go for? A: Sure we look nothing alike. My fella would be good-looking... J: [laughs] I’d go for… Olly Murs.

Kieran Donaghy opens a new chapter Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews Kieran Donaghy’s autobiography What Do You Think of That?

KIERAN DONAGHY has won four senior All-Irelands with Kerry and is the recipient of two All Star Awards. He has played basketball at a very high level, capped as a schoolboy. He plays basketball with the Tralee club. He has hit the headlines recently with the publication of his autobiography, ‘Kieran Donaghy - What Do You Think of That? Although he is best known as a Kerry footballer, he makes it very clear that he is a better basketballer than a footballer. “In basketball I always know that I can influence the thing. I nearly always feel like I’m the best player “. He is very honest in his perceived ability as a footballer. “I don’t feel that confidence or control in football. I’ve never been the best player, not at inter-county level anyway. I’ve had to rely on the ball coming to me. In basketball if I want the ball. I can go demand it.” He admits that only for the likes of Gooch beside him he would be a very ordinary club standard player. “I know my limitations (as a footballer), I can’t feint or solo or shoot like James O’Donoghue. But what I will do is stand up to anyone so the likes of James and Gooch can play. I’ll do what it takes for the team to win.”

PUBLIC IMAGE His public image on the field is his feisty nature and invariably in trouble with opposing full backs such as with Rory O Carroll, Eoin Cadogan, and Michael Shields He gets so many yellow cards, He told the McGee brothers from Donegal, “Look man, I’m here to play football. But if you want….” He is ready to kill to win. “It’s the only way I know how. It’s

the way I’ve always done it. Can I change? Can I stop giving out to the ref? I ….BEEP can’t. I am the way I am”. Rarely a game goes by that he is not involved with referees. In one game the ref called over himself and Michael Murphy from Donegal and his reaction,” I can live with a yellow (card) especially if Murphy is getting one as well; it would have been worth it just to put down that marker and for this opportunity now to have a word with the ref”. Whereas Darragh O Se would plamás the ref when he was in trouble after committing a foul, Donaghy shoots from the hip and is usually in trouble with refs. In basketball he is hardly ever in foul trouble and this goes back to his contention that basketball is his first game and the one which he is most comfortable playing. He knows what the Kerry supporters say about the long gangly fellow. DONAGHY UNDERPLAYS HIS ABILITY Colm Keyes wrote in September 2015 that Donaghy underplays his own ability as a footballer. He is anything but useless. Both Kerry managers, Jack O’Connor and Eamonn Fitzmaurice see great potential in him with his height and high fielding ability to win primary possession on the edge of the square and parting with the ball to top class forwards such as Gooch and Mike Frank Russell. Jack O’Connor says of him, “Donaghy is the key. If he stays healthy and keeps his feet on the ground, he’ll transform Gaelic football. You can have all the tactics in the world

but with his hands and athleticism he’ll be very hard to stop.” That is why the big fella went on to win four All-Irelands. PRIVATE LIFE The book deals in a very honest way about the fractious relationship he had with his father. The hyper aggression and ferocious energy all goes back to his father and how he related to him “After Mam threw Dad out, he came round to the house and started thumping on the door, pleading to be allowed in, swearing that he’s changed, that he’d stopped the gambling and the drinking. His dad did not mend his ways and this had a big effect on Kieran growing up. He depended on his Mam and his Nan to bring normality to his life. 2015 was a terrible year for him, his Nan died. That was also the time he left his job in Ulster bank. There were “numerous reasons, the main one being that there was only so far I could advance with my dyslexia”. At the same time there was “a terrible rumour about my private life. It was complete and utter bull… and then there was the 2015 All Ireland.” Published by Trinity Mirror Sport Media, this is a very honest book and it will find its way in to many a Christmas stocking. MUNSTER FINALS Best of luck to Dr Crokes and to Kenmare in their respective Munster Club football finals fixed for Mallow on Sunday, November 27.

The Dr Crokes senior team, and captain Johnny Buckley, county league champions, pictured after their victory against Austin Stacks in the Killarney Credit Union County League Final in Killarney on Saturday.

Killarney South Community Games

The A.G.M. of Killarney South Community Games was held recently. Again, the area had a very successful year with National Athletics medals again being won in the area. Aoibhin Evans and Alex Hennigan Cross Country and the U. 12 boys 4 X 100m relay team of Karl McCarthy, Conor Gammell, Teddy Muldoon, Alex Hennigan, Dara Looney and Robbie Hartnett. There were a number of important issues discussed at the meeting including the proposed merger by Kerry Community Games of the Killarney South and Killarney North areas. For this to happen, new people from the Killarney North area who would like their children to be involved in Community Games activities (i.e.) athletics, swimming, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, GAA etc. need to contact area secretary Anthony Greaney ASAP. This merger can only happen if new people come on board on the committee so please ring area secretary Anthony Greaney 087 709 8695. This is a huge development for the area as it will give boys and girls from the wider Killarney area to fully participate in Community Games activities. However, it can only happen if new parents express an interest in getting involved so again, ring Anthony on 087 709 8695 without delay.

Killarney Cougars Basketball Club

JUVENILE NEWS U12 Boys League Causeway Cobras 11 Killarney Cougars 31 Cougars made the long journey to North Kerry on Monday last and made the journey worthwhile with a good win. Cougars started well and were on target with baskets by Rocco Sheehan and Mark Daly to take an early lead the home side had a good second qtr and came back well to leave Cougars just ahead at half time by 6pts. The Cougars had the upper hand in the second half and came through thanks to a good spread of scores from Ian Coffey, Ted O’Gorman and Cian Farndon in a good team performance. U16 BOYS LEAGUE Killarney Cougars 39 St Anne’s 28 The Cougars hosted St Anne’s at the Pres Gym on Saturday evening and a good attendance saw a close contest with Cougars making home advantage count. The game saw Cougars make the better start leading 12-7 at the end of the opening qtr with all the starting 5 on target with a St Anne’s Dylan O’Callaghan three pointer on the buzzer the highlight score of the opening period. A poor second qtr saw little scores with the half time score 16-11. Cougars had a dominant spell in the third qtr with Daniil Aleksejenko dominating on the boards adding 6 pts and Eoghan Myers also adding a couple of good baskets as Cougars opened up a lead 32-23. St Anne’s came into the final qtr chasing the lead and pressed Cougars to good effect and reeled in the Cougars lead to just 4pts thanks to good scores from Darragh Brosnan, Cian Ring and Brian O’Leary as Cougars struggled to get a grip in the closing stages of the qtr. Cougars used their final timeouts to good effect and were able to regain their composure to finish the game with a couple of good scores from Eoin Talbot, Ruairi Murphy and Sean O’Brien and deservedly taking the points. Best for Cougars were Colm Talbot, Eoghan Myers and Daniil Aleksejenko. U14 BOYS CUP Killarney Cougars 32 St Bridgets 43 Cougars hosted St Bridgets in the Cup Quarter final and the Currow boys strong final qtr saw them come out on top with a slightly flattering winning margin following a well contested game. The visitors made the best start to lead 13-10 with Jack Moriarty impressing. The second qtr was basket for basket to leave the score at half time 19-16 to St Bridgets. Cougars took the game to St Bridgets in the third qtr and were dominant with Harry Byrne impressing for Cougars to reduce the arrears by the end of the qtr 26-24 but Cougars had missed very good opportunities to have the lead heading into the final qtr. Cougars frustration at missed chances led to foul trouble early in the closing qtr and the visitors made them pay from the free throw line with Darragh Kelly very accurate from the line as they opened up a lead as the Cougars

challenge faded in the closing minutes despite a big effort the Currow boys held firm in a very entertaining Division One contest. Celtic dominated from early on and great play down the wing saw Peadar Kelliher set up Senan O’Leary for the opening goal and they repeated the trick minutes later to make it 2-0. Mastergeeha had some great individual players and it was a hard, fast game from then on, with Jack O’Donoghue positioning the Celtic defence well to blot out danger. Celtic’s third saw Senan collect his hat-trick on the counter-attack and William Harty capped off a great day with the final goal. SENIORS This Sunday, our Seniors are due to host Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne in the next round of the Munster Junior League. Following on from our win in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup and away matches in Cork, this is the first time in a while that our seniors play at Aghadoe, so let’s get out and support the lads at home! Kick off is at 2:30pm. U18’S Our U18’s travelled to Mallow in the league last Saturday. A tough match and the result did not go our way, however this squad is building and under the leadership of Pat F. O’Connor, Ger Maher and Denis Reen a strong squad is beginning to click. Though the lads were well beaten on the day, Rob Campbell showed excellent leadership on the day following the departure of our Captain Dylan McCarthy to injury. Cathal Helay and Oisin Doherty were other players of note on the day with excellent defensive displays. Next weekend, we host Listowel RFC in Aghadoe at 1:30pm. MINIS Tomorrow our minis are due to host our round of the West Munster Minis Blitz, at Aghadoe. We will welcome teams at all ages from U7 to U12 from Castleisland RFC, Iveragh RFC and Kenmare RFC. This is a fantastic occasion for us to showcase our club, our hospitality and our children’s rugby skills in a wonderful setting. We would ask parents to please bring along some goodies sandwiches, buns, Rice Crispie cakes

etc for the post matches celebrations, where we welcome all players, coaches and parents to have some food at the clubhouse. The children in particular love blitzes as they get to play against other clubs and show off their skills to their family. All are welcome to come along and we would ask everyone to be there for around 10:15. Any questions, give Minis coordinator Liam Murphy a bell on 087-4145662. LIGHTS Last Sunday a meitheal of hard workers under the guidance of Club Captain Ger Moynihan, put up the long awaited new light poles at the pitches at Aghadoe. Helped by James Allman, Connie O’Leary, Peter Kelly and Jeremiah Moynihan, the poles are now in place. Well done all and thanks for your hard work!

DOWNING TROPHY Men’s Committee win the revived Downing Trophy. Friday the 18th of November saw the revival of the lapsed Downing Trophy competition between the respective Men’s Club committees and some invited guests, between Killarney and Dooks. This competition has its origins back in the mist of time, having commenced in 1908. The Trophy was presented by Henry Downing who was a principal partner in the solicitor firm of the same name, who had offices in both Tralee and Killarney dating back to the 19th century. The Killarney team, which was led by Club Captain Declan McCarthy won a tight contest by the odd match of 7 pairings, and Declan played a true Captain’s role by winning his own encounter when partnered by Brian Fitzgerald. Ex-officio Captain Liam Hartnett also won his match, when partnered by Harry O’Neill in their own match. Both Club Captain’s in their post dinner speech expressed the wish that the competition would now continue into the future. CHRISTMAS HAMPER Christmas hamper 0-12 handicap sponsored by AIB Bank, on Killeen, Sunday 20th November. Killarney Athletic FC

RESULTS Denny Premier A Killarney Athletic 0-1 Fenit Samphires A heartbreaking finish to a very tight game with Fenit scoring the only goal of the game in the 92nd minute. Athletic found the Fenit keeper in great form and when we did beat him the post kept us out.

Local clubs weekly round-up | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm

At the other end Brendan Kealy made some fine saves when Fenit threatened. A tough pill to follow with the goal coming deep in stoppage time via a deflection. U15 Killarney Athletic 1-2 Killarney Celtic We played neighbours Killarney Celtic at Woodlawn today and lost 2-1 but deserved something from it. We played brilliantly in the 1st half and went in 1-0 up. The second half Celtic pushed us and equalised with 15 mins to go. A serious eye injury to Eoghan o Sullivan with 10 minutes to go unsettled us and in injury time set a great counter attack to win the game. Super performance from the Boys in Blue and definitely deserved something from the game. Well done to all. U13 The u.13 B’s travelled to Ballyheigue where they met a physically stronger team. Despite early saves by Sam Bolger, the defence was breached 3 times before half time. Created some good chances before half time but did not convert them with the Ballyheigue keeper making a great save from Caoilte Cronin. Played much better in the second half & Cillian Courtney converted a penalty after Karl McCarthy was fouled. However Ballyheigue were awarded a penalty minutes later for a harsh hand ball decision resulting in a final score of 4-1. Best for Athletic was Sam Benson. The Pat Murphy Cup THE Pat Murphy Cup Final took place on Monday, November 12. In the first semi-final Donal Kelly overcame Dermot Kelliher and in the second semi-final Dan Leen beat Fred McSweeney. Both games were very close and of very high standard. In the final Dan Leen got the better of Donal Kelly in a dramatic game which went down to the wire after Dan came close to finish a 102 and Donal unluckily missed out on a 146 finish. Dan finally took the last leg to win the game. The game was exceptional high standard throughout with both players pushing each other to the limit at all times.

AQUILA CLUB O’ DONOGHUE CUP SEMI FINAL Rathmore 2-16 Spa 0-16 On Saturday last, Rathmore progressed to play Dr Crokes, in this years final of the O’Donoghue Cup, SFC, sponsored by The Aquila Club, Gleneagle Hotel. A good game of football, played in Fitzgerald Stadium, Spa shaded it in the middle area of the field but Rathmore proved the stronger overall. The Rathmore defence was stronger and their attacks more effective, particularly in the second half, two goals proving the difference between the sides in the end. There was little between the sides at the break, with the Rathbeg side 2 points ahead. A second Rathmore goal on the 39th minute, gave the Rathbeg side a cushion they did not relinquish and Rathmore ran out winners with a six point margin. Final sore Rathmore 2-16 Spa 0-16. Man of the match Mark Reen. Referee: Padraig O’Sullivan (Firies) Rathmore team: Kenneth O’Keeffe, Michael J Kelliher, James O’Sullivan , Conor Jenkins, Paul Murphy (0-1), Conor O’Sullivan (0-1), Cathal Murphy, Aidan O’Mahony, Brendan O’ Keeffe (Capt.) , Daniel O’Sullivan, Eoin Lawlor (0-1), George O’Keeffe, John Moynihan (2-1), Shane Ryan (0-4;1f), Mark Reen (0-8;3f). Subs: Eoin Fitzgerald, Craig Hickey (0-1) TATLER JACK EAST KERRY MINOR A & C CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS Dr Crokes 1-17 Firies 2-9 In a sporting and skillful game of two halves, between Firies and Dr Crokes, it was the Lewis Road side that won the East Kerry Minor A Championship title, sponsored by The Tatler Jack. Dr Crokes dominated the scoring in the opening half, notching up some lovely points from play and led at half time 12 points to 2. Firies came out on fire after the break. A Dr Crokes pointed free was followed by a Firies purple patch. A goal from Diarmuid O’Mahony, quickly followed with three points without reply had reduced the gap to 5 points – 0-13 to 1-5, nine minutes into the half. Firies were awarded a penalty but the Dr Crokes keeper Nealu Doherty, made an outstanding save to keep his side ahead. Two points a piece kept the score board ticking over and a great goal from the boot of Cathal O’Shea, had a single score between the sides, Dr Crokes 0-15 Firies 2-6. With excitement reaching fever pitch, a Firies pointed free reduced the gap. However, Dr Crokes followed a point from play, with a well scored goal, finished to the net by Mark Hartnett, giving Firies a mountain to climb with the game in the last five minutes – 1-16 to 2-7. Two Firies points to a single point for Dr Crokes left the full time score: Dr Crokes 1-17 Firies 2-9. RACE NIGHT Our clubs annual fundraising Race Night is scheduled for Saturday De-

cember 10th in The Plough Bar, Milltown- Fundraising has long been an important activity for GAA Clubs. As our club continues to develop facilities and provide opportunities for Gaelic Games to be played in our local community, there are ever increasing demands on club finances. As you may be aware the club is in the continuous process of modernizing the facilities at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown. We are embarking on a major fundraiser- A Video Horse Race night. It has been a wonderful success in the past and we hope this year will be even better. The club are seeking your valued support in race sponsorship: Full Race Sponsor-€200 or a Half Race Sponsor-€100. You can also purchase a horse for €50. Sponsors will receive a full page advertisement in the race programme as well as being publicly acknowledged on the night. They will also receive exposure on the club’s Facebook Page.

MINOR CELEBRATIONS There was a great turnout of young and old alike on Saturday evening in the clubhouse for a reception for this year’s All-Ireland winning Kerry Minor team. It was a fitting tribute to this talented group of young players and especially for David Clifford who had a tremendous year all through, it was lovely to see a photo being taken of David with his parents and also his grandmother from Derrynane and his grandfather from Ballymac. Thanks to the minor management of Peter Keane and James Foley who attended and also to the fourteen players who came and gave their time so generously, they posed for photos, signed autographs and gave the youngsters of Fossa as much time as was needed. It was a great sign of the character of these players, no wonder they are All-Ireland champions! Thanks to all who helped organize the evening and a special word of thanks to the ladies of the parish who put on a wonderful spread of food and home cooking, they put on a great show. CLUB SOCIAL To celebrate a fantastic and hugely successful year for Fossa GAA Club, we will hold a club social on December 27th in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Dr Crokes GAA

DIVISION 1 COUNTY LEAGUE FINAL Dr Crokes 2-15 Austin Stacks 0-8 In this game which neither side wanted to play on this particular date we ran out easy winners in the end. We didn’t want to play as we are playing the Munster Final next weekend. Stacks also had a very good reason for wanting to fulfill this fixture. They hadn’t played a game for six or seven weeks and had called a finish to their season when they exited the County Championship. They were hardly expected to keep on training for another several weeks for a fixture which both teams were prepared to play next year. Our opponents had a point in the first minute but then we sent over seven points without reply before the end of the first quarter. Austin Stacks were the better team in the second quarter, restricting us to just one point, while scoring two themselves. This gave us a half time lead of 0-8 to 0-3. We had a great quarter and outscored our opponents 1-5 to 0-1. This left us 1-13 to 0-4 in front at the end of this period. Both sides ran their benches in the last quarter and the game was devoid of any enthusiasm during this final period. This left us winners by 2-15 to 0-8. Our Management would have had some satisfaction with our display. A positive was that seven of our starting line out got on the score sheet along with substitute Chris Brady. A negative was that we only got one point in the third quarter even though we had a lot of offensive play. In fairness to our opponents they would have found it very hard to get into shape for this match after several weeks without a game. They never gave up but they ran out of steam in the second half. Team and Scorers: Shane Murphy, David O’Leary, Eoin Brosnan, Fionn Fitzgerald, Gavin White, Alan O’Sullivan, Luke Quinn, Ambrose O’Donovan, Johnny Buckley 0-1, Micheal Burns 1-1, Daithi Casey 0-1, Brian Looney 0-1, Jordan Kiely 1-2, Colm Cooper 0-4 (0-3 frees), Tony Brosnan 0-4. Subs: PJ Lawlor, Chris Brady 0-1, Mike Milner, Jamie Doolan, Cillian Fitzgerald, Paul Clarke. ANNUAL RETREAT Dr Crokes Annual Retreat in Ardfert is Thursday December 1st at 7.30pm. Bus leaving High Street car park at 6.30pm sharp. LOTTO Lotto 1, 7, 13, 22. Jackpot €11400. Not won match 3 13 by €35. Next draw on Monday 28th of November in Tatler Jack. Jackpot €11700
