Another Win at The Brehon, Killarney SINEAD McCarthy, Operations Manager at The Brehon, Killarney was honoured with a prestigious award from the Irish Hospitality Institute recently.

Sinead was awarded Hospitality Manager of the Year in the food and beverage category at the IHI Founders’ Banquet and Hospitality Awards which took place at The Clayton Hotel, Burlington Road Dublin last Thursday.

Sinead, a native of Drimoleague in West Cork, joined the team at The Brehon in 2014 as food and Beverage Manager and was promoted to Operations Manager in October 2015. Three Tenors to take centre stage in the Friary

The Manor West “Taste of Tralee” Food Fair MANOR West Shopping Centre and Retail Park are delighted to host its second “Taste of Tralee Food Fair”, in the shopping centre on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December from 12-6pm. The food fair will once again host numerous local artisan food producers offering fantastic handmade products from the heart of Kerry.

As well as Santa and his friends, Kingdom Party Pals will be there over the weekend with some fun characters such as Anna and Elsa. Radio Kerry’s Francis Jones will broadcast live from 11-2pm on Saturday and there will be a chance to win some fantastic spot prizes.

The Food Fair is organised in conjunction with Taste Kerry and is a fantastic opportunity for many of the local artisan food producers to display their products and interact with a wider pool of customers.

Children will be able to visit Santa and his friends for free every Thursday and Friday from 2-6pm and every Saturday and Sunday from 12-6pm, right up to December 23rd.

Question I’m getting a social welfare payment. Will I get a Christmas Bonus?

Answer The Christmas Bonus is paid to people getting a long-term social welfare payment. Longterm social welfare payments include the following: •State Pensions and Widow’s/Widower’s/Surviving Civil Partner’s Pensions •Invalidity Pension, Blind Pension, Disability Allowance, Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, Domiciliary Care Allowance and guardian’s payments •Jobseeker’s Transitional payment, One-Parent Family Payment, Farm Assist, Deserted Wife’s Benefit and Allowance •Community Employment, Rural Social Scheme, Tús, Gateway, Back to Work Enterprise Allowance and Job Initiative •Back to Education Allowance (BTEA), VTOS and Further Education and Training (FET) training allowance (people coming from jobseeker's payments must have been on their payment and/or BTEA or VTOS or FET training allowance for 15 months) For Jobseeker’s Allowance or Basic Supplementary Welfare Allowance, you must be getting the payment for 15 months to get a Christmas Bonus.

In 2016 the Christmas Bonus will be 85% of your normal weekly payment (including the Living Alone Increase, the Island Allowance and the Over-80 Increase). Fuel Allowance is not included when calculating the Christmas Bonus. The minimum Christmas Bonus payment is €20. For Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA), which is paid monthly, the bonus is 85% of the weekly payment. The DCA portion of the bonus is calculated independently of other payments. So, for example, if you are getting DCA for one child, 85% of the weekly payment is €60.70.

We prepare our food fresh in store in order to ensure that it is great quality every single time. Whether it’s one of our delicious smoothies, the warming soup or stew of the day, the frittata or baked sweet potato with chilli, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for!

Maca Hot Chocolate 250ml almond milk •½ – 1 tbsp maple syrup (depending on your pallet) •½ tsp vanilla extract •1 tsp true maca powder •25g dark chocolate (70% or higher), chopped

Method:

•Pour the milk into a saucepan.

Add the maple syrup, vanilla and maca powder. Whisk everything together.

• Place the saucepan over a low heat, heating until just before milk simmers.

• Add the chopped chocolate and remove from heat. Set aside for 2 minutes so that the chocolate melts.

• Whisk everything together vigorously until even and smooth, scraping the chocolate from the bottom of the pan as you go.

•Serve hot!

The INEC Christmas Carnival Is Back

The INEC kicked off their Christmas Carnival of events at the Acoustic Club, Gleneagle Hotel at the weekend.

Some of the biggest names in music will appear at the Killarney venue as part of the Christmas schedule and the gigs are selling out fast.

Kick start the party season with the one and only Mario Rosenstock December 3 and the jam packed schedule doesn’t stop there with performances from Tommy Tiernan, The Coronas, Picture This, Keith Barry, The Saw Doctors and Kíla.

The intimate INEC Acoustic Club has a series of treats in store with Damien Dempsey, Brian Deady, Hermitage Green, Jack L, Mick Flannery and Jerry Fish all taking up residence over the festive month.

Get 2017 off to a roaring start with country Music’s hottest star Nathan Carter New Years Eve for what promises to be a stellar performance from the King of Country. The business was set up in 1991 by Seamus and Margaret O’Donoghue and is still run as a family business 25 years later. The future of St Finian’s St Finian’s hospital is a conservation-listed building and rightly so, as its likes will never again be constructed.

In essence, Killarney is lucky to have such a fine building and large tract of land attached that is owned by the State.

The future use of the building will be of the utmost importance to the town of Killarney and its surrounds.

In the first instance and in no small way, the people who lived their lives as patients and who worked therein must be remembered.

Thereafter, we must look to a new use, that will maintain and advance the economic position of Killarney and surrounding areas to enhance its attractiveness for investment that will provide substantial benefit for present future generations as we have now only one substantial employer in the area.

I suggest this asset be used as a high end facility to provide third level education and training as an off site base or extension of University College Cork or other third level institution to those who wish to avail of opportunities in commerce, information technology and moreover tourism and related sectors.

Such a facility would allow use of the vacant accommodation in the town during the Winter and allow that same accommodation to be used in the Summer to facilitate visitors.

Most importantly for this area, however, it would augment, advance, create new and benefit the already established tourism and related industries in this region.

NO FINES ON OVERDUE BOOKS AT KERRY LIBRARIES THIS WEEK

Have you have been avoiding going to your local library lately because your books are late and you dread the thought of fines? Now is your chance to come clean because during this week you can return your overdue books and pay no penalty. Don’t let the fear of fines keep you away from your local library. Take advantage of the library amnesty.

This week, Monday, 28 November to Saturday, 3 December is Library Ireland Week and to celebrate the occasion, libraries throughout Kerry will not be charging fines on overdue books returned during the week.

The normal loan period is 21 days. Failure to return a book by the due date normally results in a fine of 5c per day per book.

Options for avoiding fines include (i) online renewal of book through the website www.kerrylibrary.ie (ii) renewal by phone to any library and (iii) renew books by calling in to any library.

County Librarian, Tommy O’Connor said: “Anyone with overdue books is welcome to avail of this amnesty of fines but to also come in and see and enjoy all the new services that the library has to offer.”

In addition to libraries being a great place for borrowing adult and children’s books, other services now available include free internet and Wi-Fi access, online resources such as e-magazines, e-training courses, e-languages and e-books as well as local studies information and access to a range of newspapers and magazines.

Kerry Bravehearts launched ‘Kerry Bravehearts’, a new book written Kerry journalist and photographer Con Dennehy, was launched before a capacity crowd on almost 700 people in Killarney on Sunday last, November 27th.

Launched by Radio Kerry presenter and journalist, Deirdre Walsh, the 270 page book looks deep into the heart and soul of 43 inspirational Kerry people who have overcome, and in many cases continue to overcome adversity in their own personal life. Men, women and children from all over Kerry are featured in the book which brings readers on a journey that is physical, emotional and spiritual.

“The launch at the Gleneagle Hotel was an amazing day filled with excitement and emotion.

Most of the people featured in the book were interviewed by Deirdre Walsh during the afternoon.

Her professionalism shone through and really added to the occasion.

The introduction to the book was read by Megan

Dennehy.

The book, available all over Kerry and beyond from this week, invites each of us to put ourselves in another’s shoes, to see and feel the existence of pain, bravery, love, community and courage. It is a book brought to you by ordinary people who have, and continue to live, extraordinary lives,” said Currow native, Con Dennehy.

Each person featured in the book has battled with a range of life changing traumas such as cancer, Parkinson’s disease, depression, brain injury, loss of limbs, strokes, epilepsy, suicide, rare growth disorders and other medical issues.

There are also a number of inspirational stories of Kerry people who have done phenomenal work in their own communities.

This is the second book

by Con Dennehy following the success of ‘Tough as Leather’, the story of World Mountain running champion John Lenihan, in 2015.

Local School Holds Christmas Cookery Fundraiser Killarney Community College held an inspiring festive Cookery Demo on Wednesday. The demo presented by the talented team from Chefhire.ie was a hit with parents and students. All the proceeds went to the ongoing fundraising for the school Gym. A Threshing Success THE Threshing Cancer event held on the farm of Brendan Ferris in Beaufort, raised a whopping €35,000 to be distributed between a number well deserving beneficiaries, these include: The Oncology Unit, Kerry University Hospital; Recover Haven Tralee; St. Josephs home Killorglin and Kerry Hospice.

This was the 4th year we have held this event bringing the grand total of money raised to €111,000. All monies raised will help these groups obtain much needed equipment and undertake desperately needed refurbishments.

Along with the Threshing Cancer and family fun day the annual bingo was a big hit.

‘We would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone involved in the day from sponsors, volunteers and stall holders to the many people who came on the day to support, without the help of the local community Threshing Cancer would not be possible’ said Justine Ferris King.

A presentation night is taking place in The Red Fox Inn, Glenbeigh on Saturday 3rd of December beginning at 8:30pm. There will be spot prizes, raffles and music on the night.

Concerns Raised at Let’s Talk Tourism National Forum

CONCERNED tourism industry leaders have been warned that a reintroduction of a hard border in Ireland, as a direct result of Brexit, would be “absolutely detrimental” and it could lead to the return of violence in the North.

Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly told delegates at the Let’s Talk Tourism forum in the Muckross Park Hotel, Killarney that he has a feeling Brexit might not happen but there is certainly a hardening of attitudes towards the UK in Europe.

“Brexit was a false vote, based on emotion and mistruths. There had been 20 years of falsehoods from the British tabloids and they were never contradicted. The decision to exit was also based on keeping migrants out,” he said.

Mr Kelly said he believed British Prime Minister, Theresa May, might call a general election next June or July and everything could change after that.

The MEP warned that the return of a hard border would be impact enormously on the peace process.

“One small thing could spark it all off again.

Some people haven’t gone away and we are in for at least two years of uncertainty, probably longer,” the Fine Gael MEP stated.

He said it was becoming clear that the attitude in Britain has changed and the latest poll showed that 56 per cent would now vote to remain in Europe with the “vast majority” of young people against Brexit.

Senator Paul Coghlan told the forum that the outcome of Brexit was “a huge unknown” but people in tourism are right to be concerned.

Trinity College Professor of Finance and Waterville native, Brian Lucey, told the gathering in the Muckross Park Hotel that Brexit will certainly lead to a harder customs border the likes of which has not been seen before in this country “We need to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Brexit is a major bump in the road but it is still only a bump in the road and we can get through it,” he said.

The country’s tourism industry in now witnessing the serious consequences of cuts made in staff

development and training costs during the recession, industry leaders have acknowledged.

The chief executive of the country’s largest hotel group told delegates at the forum that in 2008 and 2009 the first cuts made were in the whole area of people development and new initiatives are now urgently required to regain lost ground.

Delata Hotel Group boss, Pat McCann, said training schemes for key people were seriously diminished.

“We must develop our people and prepare them for changing markets and how to adapt,” he said.

On Brexit, Mr McCann said there is a fear that Ireland could end up paralysed if too much time is spent worrying about it.

“My concern is that we’ll get so down in ourselves with all the worrying about what will happen but we must keep going.

“If you’re going through hell what do you do? You keep going because you have no other option. We need to look at other opportunities and work on developing them,” said the Delata chief.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

MATTHEW 24:37-44: The “coming of the Son of Man” can be applied to the end of the world, to the moment of death, or to any moment of grace. We are not given advance notice as to when any of these will happen, so the message is to be alert and ready. When have you found that your alertness meant that you were able to receive an unexpected grace (e.g. take an opportunity which presented itself, or respond to a hint from another person that you might easily have missed).

One of the enemies of alert living is constant busyness. Have you ever found that being caught up in your own agenda makes you less sensitive to what is happening around you? Recall times when you paused in your relentless busyness and were rewarded by a significant interchange with another person, a moment of grace.

You probably know the difference between being ready for a visitor and the unannounced caller who catches you unprepared. Let the memory of the discomfort of being caught off guard spur you on to a constant readiness for the coming of the Lord.

If we allow it to, waiting can be a creative time, a time of high alert, where we may even be more aware of ourselves. Our senses are heightened especially when we are waiting for important news or results or waiting on a loved one to call or to arrive. Waiting is not always seen as a good thing but it can be a time for growth. And so, we enter into the season of waiting: Advent. The Gospel reminds us to be alert and use this time to prepare. What will our preparations be like? God is with us in many different ways, trying to catch our attention in the midst of our busy days.

As we fight our way through the queues in the coming weeks, can we use five minutes, seven minutes, twenty minutes to stop, be still, to ask God to enter into our hearts and lives once more.

HOW many of us can truly say that our lives are an open book? “Transparency” is a bit of a buzzword in the media these days. With every scandal that hits the headlines uncovering the corrupt practices of some public figure or another, our trust is shaken. When it is a person from whom we would have expected better, or whose actions have hurt countless others, we are left to ponder the whys and hows of it all – how could they live a double life for so long? Why did they feel the need? And how on earth did they think they would get away with it?

But when we think about it, how many of us are living truly transparent lives?

Do our outside selves always match our inner selves? We may be harbouring grudges or nasty thoughts about family members, friends, colleagues or acquaintances. Maybe we are cheating or being dishonest in some small way, or cutting corners in our work. It is likely that we have built up some habits or practices that we would rather no one knew about.

In our second reading this weekend, Paul talks about the “things we prefer to do under the cover of the dark”, and urges us to “arm ourselves and appear in the light”. As we enter into Advent, it is the ideal time to examine our own lives – to come out into the light.

Brewing up support for a good cause

IT’S teatime in Killarney as the local Rotary club hosts its eighth annual Afternoon Tea at The Malton The eagerly anticipated event will take place on Saturday, October 15, in aid of the Killarney branch of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

Behind The Face – Stories of International People living in Kerry THE Book tells the remarkable and inspiring stories of 15 international people living in Kerry.

THE remarkable and inspiring true-life stories of 15 international people who have made Kerry their home have been told in a new book, Behind the Face.

The publication, which will be launched today, Friday, December 2, in Siamsa Tire, Tralee at 6pm, makes a unique and impactful statement about the diversity of the new Kerry and helps us to go behind what we see, and look into the lives of the people we pass on the street, and challenge any possible stereotypes we may have.

Behind the Face, which was supported by Kerry County Council’s Community Support Fund and NEWKD through SICAP funds, tells the stories of people like Ahmed Lulu who came here from Palestine to escape Hamas and a life of war and terror.

All these stories and more are contained in Behind the Face which is hoped will help the public understand that Kerry’s new residents all have their own reasons for coming to the county.

Their stories are of love and loss, bravery and hope but most importantly they tell us the story ‘behind the face’ – the stories of Kerry’s newest residents.

The book was compiled by Mary Carroll, Sinead Kelleher and Susan McElligott. Speaking about the Book, Mary said, “We all are different and yet the same. Some may be like us and others may be vastly different. We hope this book will allow you to think twice when you pass someone on the street and wonder what that person’s life has been like. We hope this book will help to connect the people of Kerry.”

RECIPE OF THE WEEK Celery and bulgur salad INGREDIENTS 200g bulgur wheat 1 bunch celery 1 dessert apple juice 1 lemon 4 tbsp olive oil handful toasted hazelnuts, roughly chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and chopped large handful pomegranate seeds small bunch parsley, chopped small bunch mint, chopped small bunch tarragon, chopped METHOD Put the bulgur wheat in a large bowl and just cover with boiling water.

Cover the bowl with cling film and leave for 30 minutes to absorb all the water.

Meanwhile, separate the sticks of celery and set the leaves aside. Very finely slice the celery and roughly chop the leaves. Cut the apple into fine matchsticks and toss in a little lemon juice. In a bowl, mix the remaining lemon juice with the oil and some seasoning to make a dressing.

Gently fluff up the bulgur with a fork. Mix the sliced celery and apple through the bulgur, followed by the nuts, chilli, pomegranate seeds and 3 herbs. Drizzle over the dressing and toss everything together gently. Scatter with the celery leaves and serve.

Grace Foley talks about how Christie Hennessey inspired her along her music career

I am always talking about inspiration and the people who inspire us. Usually these people will be those whom you have spent a great deal of time with and you will have come to know them very well. Sometimes we will be inspired by somebody in the public eye, whose energy and approach to life will resonate with us, even though we have never met. Well, I have been inspired in a rather unusual way.

From the very first time I listened to Christie Hennessy sing 'Roll Back The Clouds', I have felt that I know him.

The Tralee singer had a very straightforward approach to telling the most beautiful stories in a way that will instantly capture your heart. I was very fortunate to receive tickets to a tribute concert in celebration of the late singer which was held in Siamsa Tire, Tralee on Friday November 18th. I really did not know what to expect when I took my seat for the show and I was very pleasantly surprised by just how moving the entire ex-

perience was.

Aonghus McAnally played the role of Christie and he began by saying that Christie had been one of his best friends and that he had given the eulogy at his funeral. Immediately I was struck by how powerful it was that this man was channeling the character of his late friend and was allowing us as an audience to 'meet' the real Christie Hennessy. The show was filled with many endearing anecdotes, quotes and some very emotional tributes.

The concept was simple; one singer, one violinist and one pianist on stage to tell of the life of one of music's most special performers. By the end of the show I was an emotional wreck! I was surrounded by people who loved Christie so so much and many may even have known him during his lifetime. It was like watching someone turn up to their own memorial and I don't think I will ever experience anything quite like it again.

I always said that I wish I had met Christie and the more I learn about him, the more I realise that his outlook on life is very similar to my own.

Rowers Raise €5,000 for Oncology Unit Equipment

Four south Kerrymen rowed from Valentia to Dingle in 3 hours in aid of the Oncology Unit in Tralee and Valentia Island Community Hospital.

Oonagh O'Connor, presented a cheque for €5,000 to the Oncology Unit Kerry University Hospital, Tralee. Oonaghs' husband, Muiris Walsh and 3 fellow South Kerry men, Dan O’Driscoll, Valentia Island, Tony McGillycuddy, Waterville and Paul Murphy, Portmagee, raised the money for the unit by rowing in a traditional 4 oar boat from Dingle to Valentia Island, and were coxed safely through open Atlantic waters by Leo Houlihan, Valentia Island.

The equipment purchased with the money raised will be used in the Oncology Ward for Chemotherapy Patients who are showing signs of an infection. Using this equipment the Oncology Nurses will be able to quickly detect the stage of infection and patients will be treated in a more timely manner with the appropriate treatment.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE...

I read recently about a driver who was filmed by a passenger in another car as he cleaned his teeth driving along the busy M62. I can only assume he had taken care of the rest of his morning bathroom rituals before he left the house.

To be honest, nothing I meet on the roads these days shocks me. I am well used to being tailgated by drivers who simply ignore the dangers of driving too close to the car in front. And I am well aware that many motorists don’t know the significance of continuous white lines, so I quite understand that double continuous white lines are, to them, a pure mystery. Drivers using their mobile phones while driving are an everyday sight and now some of them are texting as well. I shudder when I see van drivers reading their directions and delivery details as they hurtle along the highway and ‘coffee-on-the-go’ should be properly explained. You don’t actually have to go to have coffee.

Car manufacturers should understand that not all drivers are totally with-it and should build in systems that compensate for stupid drivers. Instead, they do the opposite.

Cars are machines and people need to be careful in their use. Cars are potential killing machines and should be treated with utmost caution. Instead they are becoming amusement arcades. Safety measures should, but don’t, keep pace with the information systems and the entertainment devices available in today’s cars, which distract drivers and increase the risk of accidents. I remember driving my trusty and rusty Anglia with a radio/tape machine under the passenger seat. Those were the days when interior panels were painted and interior spec amounted to a single interior light. And an ashtray, of course.

Now, most car manufacturers install screens similar to tablet computers which allow drivers to receive messages and updates from their phones, dictate text messages and have incoming messages read to them and even have

social media connections. Sat-navs are deemed essential, spewing traffic information, directions and constant chatter often forcing the driver to focus on what exactly the sat-nav is actually doing. Like, do you really need to go through Currow so often on the way to Castleisland? Sat-nav limitations often lead to lorries having to reverse one kilometre down the road on which we live at all hours of the morning. The sat-nav simply directs them up the wrong turn and the truck drivers find the road narrows so much they have to get back on a wider road. Some manufacturers install systems that allow drivers to receive Facebook and Twitter updates at the wheel and even TripAdvisor to source facilities like restaurants and hotels. In some marques you can read headlines and news stories on a dashboard screen where you can also find details on what’s going on at your destination.

Some functions on some apps are disabled or limited when the car is moving but distraction in the vehicle is a potential contributory factor in car accidents.

The problem is that the use of information and entertainment technology in cars is being introduced and developed faster than safety technology. Ideally they should go hand in hand. Drivers engage with dashboard displays when they should be concentrating on the road.

A driver’s primary objective is to drive the car safely. It’s really that simple.

As we approach Christmas roads are busier, often very dark and can be treacherous so drivers need to be extra vigilant. At this time of year, social media goes into overdrive: Twitter, Facebook, texts and calls increase exponentially and demand more of our time and more attention. Maybe it’s time to call, “Stop!” Because, if anything goes wrong, the evidence will be there for all to see. Your every interaction with your mobile phone is timed and noted so be careful out there.

HITTING THE HEADLINES AT HOME

Motorist arrested on suspicion of drug driving A MOTORIST was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and a number of properties were searched during the course of a targeted drugs enforcement operation over the weekend in Killarney.

The motorist was arrested just off the Ross Road on Friday evening last and a small quantity of cannabis was seized in the vehicle. The driver, a male, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and investigations are continuing into the matter.

As part of the operation on Sunday evening, a number of properties were searched in the Killarney town and surrounding areas and quantities of assorted controlled drugs were seized.

Gardai have confirmed that a drugs sniffer dog was utilised in these search operations and arrests will follow in the near future.

Whilst a decent telescope is a wonderful gift, that can fire the imagination of a child, filling them with wonder and appreciation for the world around us, a poor quality telescope will achieve nothing but frustration.

Unfortunately, this time of year there will be many poor quality telescopes,masquerading as the real deal.

If the telescope packaging contains promises of “astronomical telescope” and claims like “up to 500 x magnification”, exercise extreme caution. Telescopes with descriptions like this are often not suitable for observing the sky, and if presented as a gift, may kill any budding curiosity about the night sky. A good telescope on the other hand, need not cost the earth, and can give many years of pleasure.

Here are some simple rules to follow when shopping for a telescope.

1. If it looks like a toy it probably is.

2. If the packaging makes claims like “up to 500 x magnification” and “astronomical telescope”, exercise extreme caution.

3. The tripod or mount is as important as the telescope. If it’s any way flimsy or unstable, leave it in the store.

4. Don’t rush into a purchase, talk to someone who knows about telescopes or astronomy.

• SAFETY FIRST. A&E departments are filled with homeowners who lose fights with their Christmas lights and fall off ladders or suffer electric shocks.

To avoid the Christmas black and blues, never hang lights solo; instead, work with a partner who holds the ladder.

Also, avoid climbing on roofs after rain or snow.

• USE LED CHRISTMAS LIGHTS: consume 90% less electricity compared to old Christmas lights and incandescent bulbs.

• DON’T TURN ON THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS DURING THE DAY, it is a waste of energy and electricity and no one can really enjoy looking at the lights during the day. Use timers to automatically switch the lights on and off.

• TREE LIGHTS ON - ROOM LIGHTS OFF: When the tree is lit, there is no need to have other lights on. Save energy and enhance the festive atmosphere.

• UNPACK CAREFULLY. Lights break and glass cut so unpack your lights gingerly, looking for and replacing broken bulbs along the way.

• EXTENSION CORDS ARE YOUR FRIENDS. Splurge on heavy-duty extension cords and UL-listed for outdoor use. Never overload an extension lead by plugging in appliances that together will exceed the maximum current rating stated for the extension lead. This could cause the plug in the wall socket to overheat and possibly cause a fire.

Messiah to raise the roof of Friary Kerry Chamber Choir and Orchestra 25th Anniversary performance.

A performance of Handel’s magnificent Messiah will be given by the Kerry Chamber Choir and Orchestra and solists Aisling O’ Carroll (Soprano), Martha O’ Brien (Contralto), Patrick Hyland (Tenor) and David Howes (Bass) and Vivienne Johnson (Trumpet) under the baton of Aidan O’ Carroll directing from the keyboard in the Franciscan Friary Killarney on Sunday, December 11th at 8pm.

This 25th Anniversary performance is also being recorded and excerpts will be broadcast on Radio

Kerry on Wednesday, December 21st from 6-8pm. Tickets for the performance can be purchased from the Friary Book Shop or directly from Kerry School of Music.

The concert begins at 8pm on and admission is €19/€15

Celebrating 50 years of Keanes in killarney

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Keanes Jewellers in Killarney and they have been celebrating throughout the month of December with a fantastic instore competition, and a radio promotion.

In Cork since 1948, Keanes Jewellers first opened their doors to locals and tourists in Killarney at No. 2 The High Street in 1966, and went on to become an integral part of the local community.

The building itself is steeped in history. In 1904 a French man named Louis Anthony came to Killarney and opened a photography shop here, he would cycle up the Gap of Dunloe taking photos of tourists, back to No. 2 to develop them, and then on to Ross Castle to deliver them. It has been noted that he revolutionised the photographic business locally. The building then went to Jackie Lynne, one of Kerry’s all-time great GAA men, who sold the building to Keanes in 1966. Keanes employed a local construction firm O’Connor & Breen for renovations and modernisation. O’Sullivan’s of Tralee were brought in for specialised tiling and Con O’Leary of Henn Street electrified the shop. To add to that, all the show units were made by local craftsmen, making Keanes shop a truly local success!

Speaking about this special year for the Killarney store, Gerard Keane Snr. said “The Killarney store has a special place in our hearts, it was our first venture outside of Cork. Opened in 1966, I remember the day well. We were very impressed with what the people of Killarney were doing to promote the town and we wanted to become part of the vibrant and thriving community there. The welcome we received was second to none. We’re very proud to be celebrating 50 years in Killarney.”

St Oliver’s NS Marks Wear Red Day ST OLIVER’S NS last Friday held a ‘wear red jersey day’ to mark Show Racism the Red Card Wear Red Day. During the event, all of the students/ staff/ pupils wore red for Show Racism the Red Card.

St Oliver’s NS along with other schools, businesses, organisations from throughout Ireland took part in Wear Red Day 2016. The day is an initiative of Show Racism the Red Card to promote anti- racism awareness and to raise funds for the work of the charity. .

Speaking at the event in St Oliver’s NS Mr Rory Darcy (Principal) said: “Ireland is a multicultural society, we need to encourage children and adults to grow their understanding of the many new communities now represented. Unfortunately racism is a reality but today we have shown that we are making a stand and say there is no place for racism”.

Santa’s Back at The Killarney Outlet Centre THE famous man in the red suit will be taking up residence during the month of December on Saturdays and Sundays.

For three weekends this December families can visit Santa in his Winter Log Cabin on the ground floor of the Outlet Centre.

It all commences this weekend on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th and will continue on December 10th and 11th and December 17th and 18th from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm each day.

Every family will receive their own 5 x 7 souvenir photograph of their visit with the big man himself, and all the lucky boys and girls will take home a special Christmas parcel from Santa.

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council has welcomed the announcement of €745,000 in funding for a number of projects across the county under the CLÁR programme. Cllr Michael O’Shea said the funding will allow Kerry County Council to carry out a range of enhancements in communities and at community facilities.

The funding will allow for the provision of warning lights and safety measures at 19 schools; the provision of Multi-Usage Outdoor Play facilities at Kenmare Pier and Dingle Pier; the development of a new playground in Dingle; and the upgrading of access roads to community facilities and amenities.

“This represents a wonderful investment in essential local facilities and amenities. In particular, I welcome the funding provided for safety enhancements at schools around the county – this will ensure that the approaches to schools are made safer for pupils, parents and staff,” said Cllr O’Shea.

“I am delighted that the Council will now be in position to proceed with a new playground for Dingle with funding of €184,000 provided. A new playground for the town is very necessary and this represents a great step forward for the project. It is also great to see new outdoor play facilities being developed in Kenmare and Dingle,” he said.

The Cathaoirleach also welcomed an allocation of €167,000 for access roads to community facilities in Tralee, Ballybunion, Firies, Annascaul and Killorglin.

Nico Rosberg 2016 F1 World Champion Rosberg was crowned 2016 F1 World Champion in a ‘down to the wire’ race in Abu Dabai last Sunday. The championship was decided over the last few laps as his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who needed the win and Rosberg to finish off the podium for him to win the championship, tactically backed up Rosberg into the chasing pack hoping that Rosberg would fall foul to the chasing pack.

However Sebastian Vettel headed the chasing pack and you can’t help but think, looking at the lap times, that Vettel was more than happy to see his countryman win the championship over Hamilton.

Ogier Testing The current WRC Champion, Sebastian Ogier has been tested the M-Sport WRC Ford Fiesta and the new 2017 WRC Toyota Yaris as he is in the hunt to secure a team for 2017. Ogier has been left without a drive for 2017 after the shock announcement that VW were pulling out of the sport at the end of the 2016 campaign. With the four teams competing, only two seem to be available, Citroen and Hyuadai have signed their drivers for 2017. However Citroen have indicated that they would be in a position to talk to Ogier but given there last association this looks unlikely.

Killarney Historic Rally This Staurday Killarney & Distrcit Motor Club hosts the ever popular Killarney Historic Stages Rally under the stewardship of Kevin Flannery. The event consists of 110km of competitive stages starting with the famous Molls Gap, regarded as one of the best stages in Europe, Kicummin Village stage, Anabla and Gortnagane. The second run over Gortnagane will be run in darkness and unique sceptical in Irish Rallying.

We extend our thanks to Fr. Jim Lennihan, Fr. Kieran O’Brien and Tadghie for all their kindness and understanding and for the warm and personal nature of the funeral mass and the lovely contribution of the cathedral choir.

We would like to thank in a special way Michael O’Shea of O’Shea’s undertakers for his thoughtfulness and to all his staff for their courtesy and professionalism. In addition we would like to express our appreciation to Mike Talbot and the Staff of the Dromhall Hotel for the care and consideration shown to us over those difficult days.

We remember with great affection the kindness of our many friends and especially our neighbours who called to see Kathleen during her illness and provided so much help and support in so many ways before, during and after the funeral.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the medical staff who provided care to Kathleen; Dr. Laura Malone and her staff, the doctors, nurses and staff of University Hospital Tralee, the wonderful ambulance crews, the nurses and staff of Killarney District Hospital and particularly to the palliative care team. A special word of thanks is extended to Nurses Noreen, Mary, Bridget and Nancy who took such wonderful care of Kathleen in her own home and to Kathleen McCarthy who provided so much more than home help.

Forgive us if we have left anyone out, but you are in our thoughts and we trust this acknowledgement will be accepted by all as a token of our appreciation. The holy sacrifice of the mass will be offered for all of your intentions.

Easy win brings Crokes one step closer to promised land The Munster final was horribly one-sided but Pat O’Shea’s men have bigger fish to fry, writes Adam Moynihan Prior to last week’s game, a source from within the Crokes camp told me they were expecting a tougher challenge from The Nire than they got from Loughmore-Castleiney in the previous round. I obviously need more reliable sources. This Crokes team had already proven themselves too good for Kerry, now we know they’re too good for Munster. But the big question remains to be answered: are they good enough to win an All-Ireland?

I actually missed the first twenty minutes of last Sunday’s game.

Judging by the score line so did The Nire. For a team to be 2-5 to 0-0 up at any stage of a provincial final is ridiculous and the margin of victory – eighteen points in the end – says a lot about the chasms that exist in Munster football.

Daithí Casey had the Man of the Match award sewn up by halftime, his excellent hat-trick the only real talking point in what was ultimately a non-event. It was, nevertheless, another great day for the club as they lifted the Michael O’Connor Cup for the seventh time (and broke the handle off it for the second).

The opposition in the All-Ireland semi-final will be a tougher nut to crack. Corofin of Galway have real pedigree in this competition: winners in 2015, they’ve reached the final six times and are one of only eight clubs to have won the All-Ireland Club Championship more than once (they also won it in 1998). Like the Crokes, they had a remarkably comfortable victory in the Connacht final, eventually seeing off St Brigid’s

of Roscommon with fourteen points to spare. And, like the Crokes, it was their seventh provincial championship.

The bookies currently have them as 11/8 favourites to prevail in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day so it’ll certainly be a big step up for the Munster champions. There is one good omen though: Crokes beat Corofin to win their only All-Ireland back in 1992.

Perhaps the biggest challenge will be coping with the ten-week layoff between games. They’re on an incredible run at the moment but that sense of momentum could very well fizzle out by the time they have their next competitive outing.

Mini Blitz Finally, we hosted a minis blitz at Aghadoe last Sunday which saw over 200 children take part in matches from U7 to U12 in perfect playing conditions. The pitches at Aghadoe were immaculate.

Parents brought sandwiches, buns etc to feed the masses following the matches and Aghadoe was a buzz of activity. Our U18’s played a match against Listowel following the minis blitz and it was fantastic to see so much going on at our home and to be able to showcase Aghadoe as the home of rugby in Killarney, especially to the visiting clubs – Castleisland, Iveragh and Kenmare.

Daithí Casey’s hat-trick of goals clinches Munster Club title for Dr Crokes Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the Munster Senior Final DR CROKES are Munster club champions after their runaway 3-15 to 0-6 victory over The Nire at a wet and cold Mallow venue on Sunday last. Three early goals from Daithí Casey rocked The Nire .

Just 20 minutes gone and Crokes had an unassailable lead of 3-6 to 0-1.

Effectively the game was over as a contest. Crokes added 3 more points before half time to lead by a whopping 17 points.

COPYBOOK STUFF Dr Crokes were magnificent, particularly in the first half. The Nire were no match for them, but very few teams could have lived with Crokes in that first half. Everything they did was copybook stuff and due credit must go to Pat O Shea and his backroom for getting the tactics right. They can thank veteran midfielders Eoin Brosnan and Ambrose O Donavan for gaining primary possession and delivering good ball to the brilliant forwards, who dovetailed so well. Their foot passing in particular was excellent and this was matched by their accuracy. Colm Cooper scored just one point, but he was the main provider of those brilliant foot passes which led directly to 2 of the goals and several points. Kieran O Leary was really on his game, never once spilling the ball and kicking 4 valuable points. Johnny Buckley scored just a single point, but he did so much valuable defensive work tracking back to great effect whenever The Nire threatened to go on the offense. Dogged by injury for much of this season he played a captain’s role leading by example and his fellow troops responded magnificently.

18 POINTS VICTORY When a team records an 18 point winning score there is a temptation to lavish all the praise on the forwards, but due recognition must also go to Dr Crokes defence. The Nire had plenty of opportunities to score more than the paltry 6 points, but they got no change from the Crokes defence. They were in complete control with Gavin White in particular excelling once more.

He is very composed on the ball and can move it at pace out of the danger area striding well past midfield and delivering great ball to his forwards.

On current form this season he is a good prospect to make it with the Kerry senior team in due course. And then there is John Payne, the best man marker around. He has snuffed out the threats of so many big names on the way to this Munster title and he did it again on Sunday when he held no less a threat than Conor Gleeson scoreless .That nippy corner forward came in to this game with a great reputation with the Waterford hurlers and footballers.

Fionn Fitzgerald also starred blocking down some great Nire shots at goal and sweeping out of the defence setting up the in-form forwards for scores.

CONFIDENCE Dr Crokes made light of the slippery surface and the rain that fell throughout.

By the 9th minute they led by 1-2 to no score. That first goal of Casey gave them great confidence. More and better was to come. Johnny Buckley effected a turnover on Shane Walsh and found Kieran o Leary, who was fouled as he was about to pull the trigger. Kevin Murphy the Cork referee whistled for a 21 metre free in the 21 st minute, but

when the Croke forwards pointed out that the foul was committed inside the square he consulted with his umpires and duly changed his mind pointing to the penalty spot. Casey had a great strike for his second goal giving Tommy Wall, The Nire ‘keeper no chance. In fairness to Wall there was little he could do about all 3 goals , so well executed by Casey after wonderful link up work by the in-fire Croke forwards.

Half time could not come soon enough for the discouraged Nire team, but the dressing room gave some respite for Benjii Whelan to assess the damage and to plan for some tactic to stop the free scoring Crokes juggernaut and that unassailable lead after 30 minutes of play.

The Nire did get some urgency in to their play as they mounted attacks in an effort to claw back Crokes lead.

However, when they got near goal they were very hesitant to shoot and full credit must go to the Crokes defence, which was superb. Shane Murphy had an easy afternoon, but his kick outs were accurate and invaluable so well placed,long or short.

Crokes forwards eased off in that second half as Pat O Shea emptied the bench bringing on Micheál Burns, Jordan Kiely, Tony Brosnan, Luke Quinn, Chris Brady and PJ Lawlor. The latter had to retire before the final whistle after a clash of heads. All the substitutes did very well and this shows the depth of talent in the bench.

Johnny Buckley raised the Michael O Connor Cup, in memory of the late great Michael ,the Croke and Munster administrator, signalling the wonderful end to the Kerry and Munster trail. But their year is not over yet. On Sunday next they return to the domestic scene.

O'DONOGHUE CUP Dr Crokes will meet great rivals Rathmore in the O Donoghue Cup final on Sunday next.. This will be a different experience altogether for the Crokes as Rathmore have shown great form this season. They will look to a very strong full forward line of John Moynihan, Shane Ryan and Mark Reen to get the match winning scores. The half forwards line of Daniel O Sullivan, the elusive Eoin Lawlor and George O Keeffe also has potential. Midfield will prove to be very close, where veteran Aidan O Mahony and team Captain Brendan O Keeffe will battle it out with Eoin Brosnan and Ambrose O Donavan.

On paper the Rathmore defence is not as tight as the Crokes defence and on this basis if the Croke forwards play as well as they did last week they should secure victory. However, I expect this to be very close with just a few points between them at the end. Rathmore will have no fear of Crokes as they bid for the coveted O Donoghue Cup.

Gneeveguilla Basketball Club

Ladies Div 3. Gneeveguilla 61- Caherciveen 66. (Played 26/11/2016) Some great outside shooting from Clodagh Quinlin (28) of Caherciveen is what was the difference between these two teams in Rathmore on Saturday evening last. Both teams put in a solid performance in this high scoring game. Gneeveguilla led 14-10 in the 1st quarter with opening baskets from Laoise Coughlan, Catherine O’ Sullivan (10), Mary Nagle (10) & Loretto O’ Leary.

It was all to play for at half time with Caherciveen edging ahead by one point 26-25 thanks to great driving from Chloe Dangas (17) & on target shooting from Quinlin. Scores from Shauna Guerin Crowley (14), Miriam Moynihan & Sinead Daly kept Gneeveguilla in touch.

Catherine O’ Sullivan worked tirelessly for Gneeveguilla in the 3rd quarter both in defence & attack but it was Caherciveen that pulled ahead with a four point lead 49-45 at the end of the 3rd quarter with a combination of scores from Quinlin, Dangas, Sinead Sheehan & Caoimhe Teehan.

Mary Nagle of Gneeveguilla & Quinlan of Caherciveen swapped scores throughout the last 10 minutes but it was Caherciveen who came out on top on a scoreline of 66-61. Well done all.

Boys U14 Div 3. Gneeveguilla 44- Caherciveen 36. (Played 27/11/2016) This was a fast entertaining game of basketball with great team effort from both sides. After the first quarter the score was 12-8 in favour of Gneeveguilla. At the end of the second quarter the home side were up 3. The third quarter was very even with both sides playing very well defensively. In the final quarter Gneeveguilla edged ahead to win by 8. Sean Hurley, Sean Finnegan and Ross O’Leary were very sharp in attack for Gneeveguilla while Kyle O’Connor and John Cronin were very strong in defence. Darragh Devlin, Ryan Sugrue and David O’Neill were very effective for Caherciveen. Well done to all the players

Killarney Celtic

HOOPS CELEBRATE THE FIRST 40 YEARS Killarney Celtic members past and present were out in force on Friday night when the club celebrated 40 years. The special guest on the night was FAI President Tony Fitzgerald who spoke of the long standing relationship between the club and the Governing body and that Celtic Park has hosted a number of Underage and Schoolboys Internationals. Founder member Mike Daly was present on the night ( Billy Healy was the other founder member and he now lives in Seattle) as were members of the early teams in the club and their manager Patsy Flaherty. The gathering included players from all 4 decades including members of the present squads and managers Eoin Donnellan and Brian Spillane. The first player signed by the club, Tom O’Shea is now the FAI’s Grassroots Director and in his address mentioned the many members the club has lost over the years. The Kerry District League was represented by Murt Murphy with Colm Dunlea attending on behalf of the Kerry Schoolboys Girls League.

The clubs 4 Internationally capped players were also presented with tokens commentating their achievements. Stefan McMahon and Olivia Dawson were present on the night to accept their awards.

The night doubled as the Awards Night for the club with the following being honoured: Stephen McCarthy - Youth Player of the Year. This was presented

by Marie Falvey in memory of Jimmy. John Falvey was named B Player of the Year and Diarmuid Daly and Vladimir presented him with the Alex Schober Shield.

The A team Player of the Year and the Aidan Cronin Memorial Trophy, presented by Ann Cronin, went to Wayne Sparling. The Club Person of the Year Award went to John and Jane O’Donoghue for all their work with the clubs Football for All Programme.

U14 Premier: Killarney Celtic 1 Park 4 Killian O’Sullivan scored a great goal but we had to give second best to a superb Park side.

U14 Div One: Killarney Celtic B 5 Tralee Dynamos 2 Washington Solomon and Sean Horan scored for Dynamos but goals from Josh Livingstone 3, Simon Coffey and Erin Moloney gave the Hoops all three points.

U12 National Cup: Nenagh 1 Killarney Celtic 3 Simply fabulous stuff. Celtic led 1-0 at the break and just got better the longer the game went on. Eoghan Crowley, Luke O’Neill, and Calvin O’Sullivan got the crucial goals.

killarney notes Under 13 Girls – Ellen O’Connor, one of our talented up-and-coming young swimmers, was in sublime form taking silver in the 100 metres backstroke and bronze in the 100 metres butterfly and in the process getting her qualifying times in this age group for Grade I galas. Well done Ellen! Meanwhile Maura O’Keeffe was showing some serious individual talent of her own to take a bronze medal in the keenly contested 100 metres breaststroke.

Under 14 Girls – We were all delighted to welcome back Eva Quinn who has been out of competition for some time through injury. Sporting the latest in high performance swimming gear, Eva had something to prove and, boy, did she do just that leaving the opposition cold in the 200 metres Individual Medley to win gold and following that with a second gold in the 100 metres freestyle. Eva now moves up to Grade I galas in this age group while the rest of us rush out to buy those goggles!

Under 16 Girls – Rebecca Twomey, continuing a good run in form, won a bronze medal in the 200 metres Individual Medley (an incredibly difficult race) and another bronze in the 100 metres backstroke while Meadhbh O’Sullivan took a well-deserved and hard-fought bronze in the 200 metres freestyle.

Thanks to our coach, Leontia Doody, and our assistant coach, Shane Kerins, who gave wonderful support and encouragement to all our swimmers on the day. Thanks also to all parents for travelling and for taking part in the timekeeping.

Finally, thanks to all members who supported the Killarney Rotary Club Wine & Art night where Killarney Swimming Club was one of this year’s nominated sports clubs. Thanks, in particular, to the members of Killarney Rotary Club for nominating us this year. JUVENILE NEWS Boys U16 Killarney Cougars 49 Kenmare Kestrels 35 The Cougars good start to the season continued with a home victory over Kenmare in a very competitive contest at the Pres Gym. The teams were level at 9-9 at the end of the opening qtr with Cougars Eoin Talbot and Kenmare’s Colin Crowley and Daniel Crowley impressing. Cougars had their best spell of the game in the second qtr as they opened up a lead with good baskets by Ruairi Murphy and Colm Talbot to lead at halftime 25-17.

Kenmare enjoyed a good run in the third qtr with a Tommy Cronin three setting them up for a good spell with Colin Crowley adding good baskets to reduce the arrears slightly with Cougars still ahead 36-28 but the qtr was very evenly contested. The final qtr saw the visitors become increasingly frustrated with Cougars strong defence ensuring they held onto the lead with Daniel Alekjesenko and David Bartlett strong under the boards adding good baskets to see Cougars increase their advantage and take the points in a hard earned win of a entertaining game for the good attendance. .

BOYS U14 Killarney Cougars 33 Glenbeigh Falcons 23 Cougars first home of the season in the league saw them come through in the final qtr to take the points in a entertaining game. Cougars held a slight lead throughout the game and only in the closing stages were they able to push home their advantage with Conor Horgan and Daire Murphy scoring some good baskets to give Cougars some breathing space. Best for Cougars were Tommy Bowler, Harry Byrne and Conor Horgan.

GIRLS U14 CUP Killarney Cougars 32 KCYMS 18 Cougars hosted Kcyms at the Pres Gym in this first round game, Cougars made an excellent start and the visitors never fully recovered as Cougars led by 11 points at the end of the first qtr and increased by half time. Kcyms recovered in the second half but Cougars added some good scores in the closing qtr to finish comfortable winners.

Cougars had good performances from Adele O’Brien, Sophie Dennehy, Alecia Burke, Holly Kennelly and Fiona Dineen.

This Dublin Kerry clash saw Cougars given a searching test by Tolka but the Cougars blistering start to the game saw them come through the test holding onto their early lead throughout at the Tolka Sports complex. The Killarney side made the better start playing the game at a fast pace and it had the desired effect as Cougars went into a good lead with Cassandra Buckley and Lousie Ni Mhuircheartaigh both on the end of some great moves as they got six points each in the opening quarter which Cougars dominated with Tolka struggling with the pace of the game trailing 22-7 by the end of the quarter. Curran contributing some good scores for Tolka to revive their chances with the arrears reduced to nine but Cougars stepped up again with Marian O’Callaghan and Rheanne O’Shea on target with a couple of big threes at the right time and Megan Buckley and Mags Cronin both added good baskets to finish the qtr on top and remain in front 42-29 at the half time break. The third qtr saw Tolka continue to improve and they had a good start to the quarter to reduce the lead to just 8 points but Cougars again found a good response towards the end of the qtr with Amanda Brosnan, Rheanne O’Shea and Cassandra Buckley all contributing great scores to see the lead increased to 5539. The pattern continued in the final qtr with Tolka again starting the better and they again reduced the lead with quick scores to trail 55-46. Cougars kept their composure and Lynn Jones hit another important three to silence the home support and Cougars added further quick baskets form Allyson Caggio to ease into a more comfortable lead with time running out the Cougars matched the Dublin side through the final minutes to finish deserving winners in a good contest.

SENIOR MENS CUP QUARTER FINAL Killarney Cougars 51 Gneeveguilla 61 The Pres Gym hosted this Cup Quarter final between two unbeaten sides Cougars and Gneeveguilla and the visitors impressive second half comeback saw them advance in this entertaining contest before a good attendance.

This was a game of two very contrasting halves with Cougars appearing to be in control at half time with a solid performance leading 30-17 and should have been further ahead such was their dominance with Cougars first half scores coming from Alan Flynn, Tomas Armonas and Eugene Bowler with Gneeveguilla struggling with only Don Murphy finding the range regular with 10 points.

The game changed dramatically in favour of Gneeveguilla as they took total control scoring 29-9 in the third qtr as their change of tactics to run the ball in a high tempo game had Cougars in big trouble as the visitors led 46-39 by the end of the qtr. Cougars responded well in the opening minutes of the final qtr to tie the game 46-46 with Dan Cronin on target with a couple of threes but Gneeveguilla soon picked up where they finished the third qtr to run at Cougars and they were in seri-

ous trouble with the influential Tomas Armonas fouling out to add to their woes. Gneeveguilla sensed victory and with George O’Keeffe and Don Murphy scoring freely they lead with six minutes to go and finished the game well giving leaving Cougars frustrated and no way back.

Workmen’s Rowing Club

Last Saturday a total of seventeen of our rowers, along with coaches, mentors, and families, travelled to the University of Limerick Sports Campus to compete at the above event. For eight of these athletes it was their first ‘Indoors’ and for this alone we applaud them. These novices whose ages range from 13 to 14 years, competed against up to 60 other rowers in their age groups in the 3minute , 4 or 5 minute races and in the 500metre sprint. The girls are : Sarah O’Leary and Meadhbh Ni Churtáin with the boys being: Ryan Bartlett, Ben Cussen, Peter O’Shea , Marc Woodard and Ross McCarthy. Well done to each and every one of them on their enormous efforts in these rac-

es and on clocking up some serious times, but a huge congratulations to Marc Woodard on an epic row in his 5 minute race, and coming in a very strong 3rd, securing his place on the podium for his first Indoor Championship Medal.

There was some huge competition for our J15 and J16 Rowers in their 2km races and their 500m sprints. Well done to our girls Annie O’Donoghue, Ciara Moynihan and Ciara Browne as they competed against over fifty others in their class and now have their sights set on the All-Ireland’s in January, and our J16 boys who also had over fifty co-rowers in their class for their 2km races. They are Ruadhán Mac Curtáin , David Bartlett, Jacuk Kunicki and a newcomer to the Indoors…Callum Myers. Fantastic 2km times with new personal bests all around, but again, twice, the podium belonged to David Bartlett on the day for his 2nd place in the 2km (a mere 3 seconds behind gold) and an amazing 1st place in the 500m sprint. Our J18 rowers –Siobhán Burns and Dylan Bartlett certainly gave it their all on the day too. Congratulations to you both on your new Personal Bests in the 2km, and well done Dylan on a nail-biting finish in the 500m, coming in just outside the medals to secure 4th place.

The day was indeed not over until our esteemed treasurer rowed her races… and again she pulled in the medals!!

Brilliant work Pauline O’Brien, coming in 3rd in her 2km race and then 3rd again in the 500m sprint, with only a second separating each rower on the podium.

All of the recent training has really produced some fantastic results, and will continue to do so ,no doubt as we set our sights on the All-Ireland Indoor Championship in January. Thanks as always to our coaches Mickey Joe Burns, Hannah Majella O’Donoghue and Anthony McCarthy.

Congratulations A hearty congratulations from all of her friends at Workmen’s to Lauren McCarthy on her Graduation last week from Killarney Community College in Levels 5 and 6 Office Administration, and the very best of luck as she continues 3rd level education in the Institute of Technology, Tralee. Just to top that off…. life just couldn’t get much better for Lauren, as this Sunday she celebrates her birthday!! We hope you have a fantastic day.

MINIS Our minis section held an historic and hugely successful first ever blitz at Aghadoe, last Saturday. Weather conditions were perfect and the pitches were immaculate as we welcomed teams at U7 to U12 from Castleisland RFC, Iveragh RFC and Kenmare RFC. Over 200 children took part in matches where they got to show off the skills learned over the past few months to their eager parents on the sidelines.

A wonderful day of rugby was had by all and we had a mountain of food brought by the parents who also chipped in to help ensure they visiting clubs enjoyed the fantastic Killarney hospitality. A huge thanks to everyone who helped, from parking stewards, to first aid, to helping with distributing food, stewarding and so on. Thanks to our coordinator Liam Murphy for

organising the day and his band of coaches who reffed and coached the kids and ensured they had a great day as well as helped set up the marquee and line the pitches. A fantastic effort by everyone ensured that the visiting clubs enjoyed the day and are looking forward to coming back to Aghadoe.

Well done all. Minis training continues next Saturday between 10:30am and 12midday and new players are always welcome.

YOUTHS Our U18’s hosted Listowel RFC at Aghadoe last Saturday afternoon in perfect playing conditions. In the end the visitors ran out the victors on a 24 - 7 scoreline with Alan Lynch scoring Killarney’s try and Kieran O’Connor converting. Next Saturday our U14’s travel to take on Listowel and look to finish out this phase of the league with another win as they sit at the top of the league. Meanwhile our U16’s host local rivals Killorglin at home at Aghadoe. Kick off is 11:00am for both matches.

SENIORS Killarney RFC hosted Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne at Aghadoe last Sunday afternoon in the third round of the league. Killarney controlled possession early on and tried to make this count but the first time they crossed the line it was ruled a double movement. Chorca Dhuibhne threatened with breaks from their own 22 and only for some last ditch defending, Killarney held out.

Finally some good attack in the centre on the field resulted in a driving maul just outside the dingle 22 ducked in the defence to allow Ger Moynihan to make an explosive burst off a Paul o Sullivan pass, resulting in quick ruck ball and Matt lane going over the line.

Chorca Dhuibhnei and Killarney trading penalties to make it 10-3 with Paudie sheahan scoring for the home side.

Killarney where looking to keep the pressure up on dingle and a couple of rucks put a brilliantly placed kick in behind the West Kerry defence and under severe pressure from Colin McCarthy and Mike sheahan, Chorca Dhuibhne made an error and Mike dotted down in the corner. Chorca Dhuibhne were not to be out done and from a quick tap penalty and some slick off loads crossed the line to bring the score to 15-10 going into the break.

Killarney scrums had been dominant in the first half with some fantastic hooking against the head by John Paul kissane, but with some changes at half time and a front row of Oliver O’Neil, Ger Moynihan and Adrian Hegarthy they completely controlled the set piece for the second half. And this showed with the third try when Paul O’Sullivan crossed the line from the back of a scrum on the Chorca Dhuibhne 5 metre line.

Chorca Dhuibhne received a red carded after a number of high tackles resulted in the Chorca Dhuibhne tight head prop getting his seconded yellow of the game. Killarney used this advantage to set up a line-out on the dingle to metre line with captain Ger Moynihan crossing to secure the bonus point.

At this point to score was 30-10 to Killarney, but things took a turn for the worst for Killarney.

Killarney restarted with a well placed kick forcing a penalty from Chorca Dhuibhne and Killarney were relieved to put the ball out of play.

A fantastic result by Killarney and next up its a trip to Fermoy next Sunday in the league.

RESULTS U16 Killarney Athletic 3-2 Ballyheigue Athletic In our first home game of the season, We hosted Ballyheigue at Woodlawn on Saturday.

Athletic were well on top & should have been up 3/4 goals in the first half, but only converted one chance with Liam Kelliher hitting the net.

However, a well struck shot from distance by Ballyheigue leveled the scores before half time.

In the second half, goals by Harry Potts & Liam Kelliher put us in a commanding position. However Ballyheigue scored from a corner making the last quarter a nervy one.

Athletic created a lot of chances but did not convert & our goalie, Oliver Cremin made a vital save to leave the score line 3-2 in our favour. Best for Athletic were Ian Prendergast & Eamon Long.

U14 In there first home game of the season Athletic went down to a very good Kenmare side.

Despite creating numerous first half chances, Athletic only converted one, late in the half after a great run & finish by Eoghan Mulvanney.

Athletic would have been well beaten only for some great saves from the always impressive Darragh Doolan.

Into the second half & a strong display from Tynan, O’Connor, Hickey, Gill & Moynihan made Kenmare work for the points.

PRESIDENT’S AND CAPTAINS DRIVE-IN Sunday morning the 4th of December at 10.00 the Club’s new President, Breda Duggan, Lady Captain Amy Arthur, and Club Captain Declan McCarthy together with the Junior Captains Alicia Burke of the Girls Club, and Darren Mulcahy of the Youths Club will take part in the traditional annual “drivein” at 10.00 A.M. this will be followed by the Annual playing of the Billy and Lucy O’Callaghan sponsored mixed foursomes, which will be played on the “Old Course”, this will afford everybody in all of our Clubs that will be taking part in the competition, the opportunity to experience and enjoy our course of yesteryear. It is hoped that this years equivalent of Storm “Clodagh” will not turn up on the day and play havoc with the planned events as it did last year, and which triggered off a chain of Storms that kept us all away from playing the game of golf until mid March. The traditional “Apres Match” get-together will take place in the Clubhouse, after the finish of the competition, when all of us will have the opportunity to wish the President and all Captains all of the very best and offer them our good wishes for their year ahead. The competition was played in idyllic conditions and the scoring matched the conditions. As the competition was a “shotgun” start then the number of teams able to play was restricted , and 23 teams took part, the Winning team, spearheaded by Brian Fitzgerald, included Liam Healy, Teddy O’Sullivan Jnr. and John Wall, with a great score of 96 points, and they just shaded it by one point from the team in second place comprised of John Horan, Danny O’Sullivan, Con Daly and Ciaran Fleming. MUNSTER CLUB FINAL Dr Crokes 3-15 The Nire 0-6 We got off to a dream start in this game played on a drizzly day in Mallow. We were on the offensive from the start and by the tenth minute we had scored 1-2 without reply. In the next ten minutes we had ended the game as a contest, scoring two more goals and four points for a lead of 3-6 to nil after 22 minutes. In fairness to our opponents they were trying very hard but sent over a few wides from good scoring positions. We added on a further three points to the Nires one to go in at the interval 3-9 to 0-1 in front.

The second half was a much tougher contest as our opponents matched us score for score. In this thirty minutes we just outscored them 0-6 to 0-5.

The damage had been done however in the first half and our display in the first twenty minutes was easily our best this year. Credit is due to our Waterford opponents for never throwing in the towel and for making us defend strongly in the second half.

The positives we can take out of the game were that ten of the twenty one players who lined out on the day got on the score sheet. We must also give credit to our defence who marked tightly throughout the game to prevent The Nire from putting up a big score.

RESULTS Gneeveguilla and Firies battled it out on Sunday morning in the East Kerry U21 B semi final in Gneeveguilla. Both sides were eventually matched in the first half with Firies just edging it 3-04 to 2 -05 at half time. Firies maintained there lead throughout the game and got the goals when needed despite a gallant fight back from Gneeveguilla.

Firies advanced to the final to play Legion on December 4th with a full time score reading Gneeveguilla 3-08 Firies 5-07.

RESULTS East Kerry U-21 Championship semi-final: Spa 4-20 Glenflesk 0-10 Our U-21s had a comprehensive victory over neighbours Glenflesk on Sunday.

Liam Kearney found the net in the opening moments and points from Shane Cronin, Dara Moynihan, David Spillane, Michael Foley and Evan Cronin followed to give Spa a 1-8 to 0-6 lead at the half time break. Spa dominated the play in the second half with seven different scorers on target, and finished well with 3 late goals from Evan Cronin, Ciaran Spillane and Niall McCarthy. LATE LATE TOY SHOW Congratulations to our All Ireland winning U-15 Mixed Set CCE Spa Cill Airne Fleadh team that will be performing on the Fantastic Late Late Toy Show on December 2nd. The team have travelled to Dublin twice already for rehearsals.

MID KERRY SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL Beaufort 2-14 Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-17 Beaufort Hosted Glenbeigh/Glencar on Saturday last in the Mid Kerry Senior Championship semi final & managed to pulled off a shocker that said they were the better team on the day and had their home work done on preventing the County Junior Premier Champions going for 2 in a row which they managed in style.

Conditions were perfect, dry and no wind. The visitors were first on the scoreboard with a point from Daniel Griffin. Beaufort’s Francis Courtney leveled matters with a free within a minute. The home side had a goal chance only for Liam Carey’s shot going out for a 45. Gavan O’Grady had a free and perhaps when a pass was intercepted Kieran Courtney should have had a goal but shot over the bar.

Beaufort’s good play was wasted with Fergal Hallissey shooting wide but he made amends when a bad kick out helped him finish to an empty net.

Within minutes a great interception by the outstanding Ger Hartnett for the home side led to Ronan Ferris scoring Beaufort’s 2nd goal. Fergal Hallissey added to his tally with another free.

Glenbeigh/Glencar’s Stephen O’Sullivan attacked from wingback and scored a good point. Good work by Padraig Doona was rewarded with a Ronan Ferris point Niall O’Connor reacted quickest to a block to score a point.

Tommy Cahill for the visitors punished Beaufort with a point. Caolim Teahan added another to leave score with 20 minutes gone 2-04 to 0-06. A high ball fisted clear by Beaufort’s keeper ended in the hands of Tommy Cahill who rose

the white flag again. With minutes to go before the half time whistle and with 3 points between the sides, Tommy Cahill unerring from frees added another. Beaufort never say die attitude showed when Niall O’Connor finished well and a score, their first in 14 minutes. Things were looking bad for the visitors as Francis Courtney scored a well taken point to leave 4 between the sides going in at the break. Half time score was Beaufort 2-06 Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-08.

Both teams had wides at the start of 2nd half but it was the home side’s Niall O’Connor kept tapped over. His team mate Liam Carey added another after Beaufort won the kick out.

Tommy Cahill had a free, all inside 5 minutes. Beaufort then extended their lead to 9 points with 2 big frees from Fergal Hallissey and Francis Courtney, Mike Breen had one from play before Niall O’Connor scored to keep the home side on top. To keep them in the game Glenbeigh/Glencar needed scores but were guilty of bad wides before Tommy Cahill secured 2 frees to leave the score 2-12 0-11 with 45 minutes gone.

The visitors slotted over 2 more points from the boots of Gavan O’Grady Free and Tommy Cahill. Padraig Doona was at the end of some great patient work.

Get Hartnett again put in a goal save which went out for a 45 which Gavan O’Grady duly converted however Gavan was short with a free soon after which was cleared and ended with a massive point by sub Danny Healy on 30 minutes at the other end. Glenbeigh/ Glencar finished the stronger and had time to score points from Jeremiah Hoare and Kieran Courtney. Beaufort were relieved to hear the final whistle and win on a scoreline of Beaufort 2-14 Glenbeigh/Glencar 0-17. Beaufort had a great spread of scorers while Glenbeigh/Glencar were reliant on Tommy Cahill who was unerring with all he kicked and Gavan O’Grady who will be disappointed with the frees he missed.

Cromane’s back were excellent making sure Keel got nowhere near the goals. 9 minutes in to this half Gary Sayers Keels main target man rose the white flag with 2 Frees in succession. Keel had a goal chance only to be denied but had to be content with another Gary Sayers Free. Cromane proving hard to tackle rose the green flag twice in a matter of minutes from the boots of Sean Teahan & Mikey Houlihan.

Cromane not having it all their own way responded well with a lovely point from Mikey Houlihan. Keel kept ploughing away and were rewarded with a Thomas Ladden Goal, minutes later Thomas leveled matters with a well taken point.

Last minute of the 1st half points were swapped by Keel’s Gary Sayers & Cromane’s Sean O’Sullivan ensuring all level going in at the break. Half time Score Keel 2-05 Cromane 2-05.

2nd half saw the game scoreless for 7 minutes until Keel’s Gary Sayers and Cromane’s Mikey Houlihan added points to their tallies. Within minutes Keel were awarded a free to which Gary Sayers obliged with a white flag his team mate Aaron Murphy rose the green flag to give them their 3rd goal after a rebound shot.

Liam Teahan Cromane and Gary Sayers Keel swapped points to bring Keel ahead by 4. Cromane kept ploughing away and Darren Houlihan got his first point of the game with a free to reduce the deficit.

Goal between the sides Jason Foley Keel punished Cromane with a point, followed with a Terry O’Sullivan Free which was cancelled out with a Paul P O’Sullivan Free. Keel now well on top rose the white flag twice more from the boots of Terry O’Sullivan & Gary Sayers. In the last few minutes Cromane had a goal chance to try and salvage the game only to be denied with a great save. Glenflesk reduced the margin to the minimum with two points 1-0 to 0-2 on the 4th minute. A scatter of points gave Spa the lead by a single score going into the second quarter 1-03 to 0-3. Four Spa points to 2 for Glenflesk left the score at the break Spa 1-8 Glenflesk 0-6. The second half started with the sides exchanging points 1-10 to 0-8 on the 36th minute. However, Spa dominated the scoring for the remainder of the half, notching up 9 points without reply before 2 Spa goals on the 23rd minute, the first by Evan Cronin, quickly followed by Ciarán Spillane – 3-19 to 0-8. A fourth Spa goal, by Niall McCarthy and a scatter of points saw Spa progress to the ‘A’ final on a full time score of Spa 4-20 Glenflesk 0-10. SEM Congratulations to all the Legion players who helped St Brendan’s College to victory in the final of the Taft Cup.
