"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Making A Splash To Support Brave Water Rescue Team THEY plunged right in when it came to helping communities in need in the wake of a series of storms in the past two months and a wave of support flowed in for Killarney Water Rescue this week. The hard-working team, which recently celebrated 21 years in existence, was the main beneficiary of the 12th annual Killarney Rotary Club Evening of Wine & Art and its members and fellow beneficiaries were out in force at The Malton on Wednesday as they accepted the proceeds of the event. The Evening of Wine & Art, held in November, was hugely successful with an attendance of around a thousand people. Killarney Rotary president John O’Sullivan was delighted with the fundraiser. “Sales were extremely good and I want to say a big thank you to all the artists; we had even more participating than last year,” he said. Wine connoisseurs and fans of fine food were absolutely spoilt for choice, thanks to Daly’s SuperValu. An excellent choice of local beers also tantalised the taste buds. “We would like to say a huge thank you to our main sponsor Daly’s SuperValu and we were also delighted this year to welcome Killarney Brewing Company and Torc Brewing and thank all of them for their support,” added John. The evening featured an exciting charity auction of artwork. Meanwhile, members of both the Kerry Hospice Foundation and the Killarney branch of the Irish Kidney Association sold charity Christmas cards. The raffle was co-ordinated by the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the proceeds of the cloakroom will support the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club. Amongst the other charities and community projects being supported by this year’s Killarney Rotary Evening of Wine & Art the Order of Malta, St Brendan’s Microtrack, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Coolick National School, Killarney Athletic Soccer Club, Kilcummin Defibrillator Group and SouthWest Counselling Centre.

Editor’s View MEMBERS of Killarney Water Rescue not only celebrated 21 years in existence recently but also found themselves swept centre stage by a flurry of storms as the dedicated team swung into action helping communities cope with the fallout of flooding. Killarney Water Rescue took a very well-deserved bow on Wednesday at The Malton where it was the main beneficiary of the Killarney Rotary Club’s Evening of Wine & Art. Not only that a whole host of other

deserving charities and clubs also went home with extra cash to put to good use in making Killarney a better place for all. Also impressing this week were the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club members and their coaches who underwent life-saving training with Operation Resuscitation; see our coverage this week. Meanwhile, Killarney and Kerry played host to British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott on Monday as he addressed members of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and later on paid a visit to Muckross House.

Last but not least, we wish the Killarney Athletic under-12 soccer team all the best as they take on Johnstown FC from Navan, tomorrow, at Woodlawn, in the National Under-12 Schoolboys FAI Cup. Killarney Extends Warm Welcome To British Ambassador

KILLARNEY hosted British Ambassador Dominick Chilcott this week when he appealed to Irish emigrants to the UK as well as British citizens living in Kerry to vote in the upcoming referendum to decide Britain’s future in the European Union. Welcomed to Kerry by Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Kate O’Leary, the ambassador addressed a packed Killarney Chamber networking lunch at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Monday. Mr Chilcott said he felt confident the British public would vote to remain in the EU if reforms sought by Prime Minister David Cameron and the government were implemented. The ambassador spoke in detail of British concerns. Mr Chilcott noted how Britain was seeking change in subsidies paid to migrants on low wages. The government, he said, is proposing a fouryear residence requirement for nonnationals before they could pick up the subsidy. “It’s a one-shot referendum,” he said. “There is no chance to hold it again. “If you have Irish family and friends living in the UK and if you, like me, believe the outcome of the referendum could be quite important for Irish/English relations, encourage them to go out and vote.” He said he always felt his visits to Killarney were too short. He also noted that a large numbers of tourists arrive in Ireland from Great Britain with over a quarter of those coming to the South West. “I am very pleased there’s such a strong people to people relationships I am very glad it’s bringing lots of revenue and I hope it will go from strength to strength,” Mr Chilcott visited Muckross House later that afternoon.

New role for Owen with Kerry County Council

Margaret hits the jackpot with the help of her colleagues HER colleagues at Daly’s SuperValu helped ensure Margaret Cahill struck it lucky and went home a whopping €16,800 richer this week. Margaret, from Spa, bought a ticket for Rathmore GAA Club’s lotto from her workmate at Daly’s, Jacinta Murphy. And another colleague, Mike Cronin, who happens to be secretary of the club, was on hand to break the good news that Mar-

garet’s numbers had come up in the lotto. The jackpot hadn’t been won in over a year so there was great jubilation as Mike presented the cheque to Margaret yesterday morning in Daly’s SuperValu where colleagues clamoured to congratulate Margaret. “It was a big surprise to win,” a delighted Margaret told Killarney Advertiser. “I definitely plan to enjoy the prize!”

BEST wishes to Owen O’Shea who has taken up the role as Media, Communication and Public Relations Officer with Kerry Council after eight years in journalism. Owen said he is looking forward to the new role, particularly in relation to promoting the work which the council does across the county on a daily basis. “It's a busy and exciting time in local government with many opportunities as well as challenges,” said Milltown native Owen. Prior to journalism, Owen worked in Leinster House as a Press and Research Officer with the Labour Party and worked on a number of local and general election campaigns. Owen published a book on Kerry's Political Dynasties in 2011 and is currently co-ed-

iting a book on Kerry in 1916 which will be published in April to coincide with the centenary of the Easter Rising. He has also been involved in numerous community and voluntary organisations in the past such as the credit union, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and Milltown Community Council.

HOW MABS CAN HELP YOU Jerry Doyle, co-ordinator of Kerry Money Advice & Budgeting Service, has some tips on budgeting as well as on dealing with debt AT LAST the economic fortunes of our country seem to be changing for the better and there are some positive indicators to say it is so. However there are many who are still living on a very low income, paying down debt and struggling to make ends meet. Denial, in the MABS experience, is one of the greatest impediments that people in financial difficulty face when dealing with debt. The “putting your head in the sand” approach often leads to a worsening of the situation. Making contact with your creditors Firstly, do not deny or ignore financial difficulties. If you are able to meet all your commitments then it is important that you make contact with those you owe money to immediately. It is also recommended that you initially write to them. Sample letters to creditors can be downloaded from the MABS website www.mabs.ie What are the priorities? If you have arrears on electricity, gas or phone bills you will need to attend to them or you will be disconnected. Do not resort to borrowing your way out of your financial situation. It can be tempting to use your

CASE STUDY

How a household budget help one family cope better with financial difficulties A MARRIED couple with three dependent children, all schoolgoing, recently sought the help of Kerry Money Advice & Budgeting Service. The husband had been in full-time employment up to two years ago when due to ill health he had to stop working. He is now claiming Invalidity Pension including payment in respect of his dependent wife and children and the only other source of family income is Child Benefit. The couple are fortunate in that they own their own home. They do have “unsecured debts” however which they struggled to meet agreed repayments on when husband lost his job. For different reasons they stopped making any repayments for a period of time as the husband had hospital clinic appointments with resultant travel expenses being incurred and they also fell into arrears with some household bills. They owed approximately €5,000 to their credit union, €4,500 to a bank on a car loan and they owed €2,900 on their Visa Card. The creditors having written to the couple on a number of

credit card to get out of an immediate difficulty which may prove to be an expensive mistake. Putting together a financial plan Having contacted all your creditors it is now time to look realistically at your situation – this you do by making out a budget. A budget is simply a plan for the money you expect to receive and how you intend to spend it. It will also show how much you can realistically afford to offer your creditors. See the budget sheet on the MABS website, www.mabs.ie What are you entitled to? People sometimes get into debt because they are not receiving the money they are entitled to as a result of not claiming all their tax credits or their social welfare entitlements. Some borrowings may be covered by payment protection insurance. You can check your rights and entitlements at your local Citizen’s Information Centre or see www.citizensinformation.ie Making realistic offers Having made out a budget to reflect your new income and armed with the knowledge of what realistically you can afford to offer, it is now time to write to your creditors outlining again your changed circumstance, what caused it, what you can afford to pay in the present circumstances and when you propose to make payment. Debt resolution options People who are over-indebted or insolvent now have more options than before. It is therefore very worrying that there are so many people who are still not engaging to access appropriate resolutions. The MABS website www.mabs.ie and the MABS helpline on 0761 07 2000, provide information and guidance on all aspects of dealing with personal debt. Information on statutory debt resolution options can be found on the Insolvency Service of Ireland’s website www.isi.gov.ie The Money Advice and Budgeting service is particularly well placed to assist people in over indebted situations. MABS, as well as being a free service, is independent, confidential and non-judgemental.

Kerry Stars Athletes And Coaches Learn How To Save Lives THE Operation Resuscitation Killarney group welcomed athletes and coaches from Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club on Saturday. Some 15 athletes and seven coaches were trained in CPR/ AED by the volunteers at a two-hour session at Killarney Racecourse. “In December 5, 18 of our coaches did the training and as a result of that and a conversation with Dr John Geaney of Operation Resuscitation it was decided to see if some of our athletes could do the course,” said Tom Tobin, vice-chairman of Kerry Stars. “The training was absolutely fantastic. We’re delighted as a club and we have bought our own defibrillator to carry with us when we travel for events.” The club is lucky to train in areas such as Spa GAA Clubhouse, Killarney Celtic grounds and Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre, which has defibrillators. “But now we also have our own to carry with us on trips away,” said Tom. OR Killarney aims to improve survival in cardiac arrest. This can only happen if the majority of the population are trained. Some 600 people have been trained in CPR/AED in Killarney. Three people have been brought back to life in the past 18 months in the Killarney area by the skill of bystanders’ knowledge of CPR/AED. “We hope to build on this in 2016 with the help of voluntary group Killarney Cardiac Response unit. Four lives can be saved every year in the greater Killarney area if we achieve our aim of having 50% population trained,” stated Or Killarney. OR Killarney arose after the successful resuscitation of 16-year-old Tom Geaney by his friends and coach Eugene Cosgrove. For training dates see ORKillarney.com.

WIND AND RAIN BATTER KERRY YET AGAIN

A man tries to clear a drain on the flooded Killarney to Killorglin road this week. Picture: Don MacMonagle

IT WAS a case of batten down the hatches once again with caution urged on Kerry’s roads as the county was battered by Storm Jonas earlier this week. Gardaí and Kerry County Council urged motorists to drive with caution on Tuesday following overnight heavy rain and high winds. Kerry was one of a number of coastal counties battered overnight by the tail end of Storm Jonas, leaving many roads heavily flooded and trees down in some parts.

16

Killarney Advertiser 29.01.16

Meanwhile, Met Éireann issued a Status Orange wind warning for counties including Kerry which came into effect at midnight last night. Southwest winds veering westerly increased 65 to 80 km/h overnight and will gust 110 to 130 km/h at times. The weather warning was in place until 9am today. Kerry County Council personnel are monitoring the situation.

Call for Pretty Polly potential to be maximised THE former Pretty Polly site was discussed at the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District. Councillor Michael Gleeson raised the issue, asking the council if the site had been cleared “of any and all physical hindrances and thus allow for the maximisation of its potential as a future industrial location”. “It no longer makes sense to have the present shell presenting as an eyesore and as a hindrance to possibility and progress,” said Cllr Gleeson. Kerry County Council replied that it has undertaken an assessment of the property. This includes assessment of the general condition of the building. Given the current condition of the building it cannot be utilised without significant investment. Removal of the structures will require a Part 8 Planning Process to be undertaken. Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle responds to feedback THE Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle committee has issued a statement in response to feedback it received in relation to the registration process for this year’s cycle. The statement addressed issues such as the lottery system. Many of the first people who tried to register for 2015’s cycle were unable to get a place. “This was due to unprecedented demand for places – over 9,000 people applied for 5,000 places on the morning that registration opened which caused the registration system to crash,” stated the cycle organisers. “To avoid this issue happening again and to ensure the fairest system possible for registration, we decided upon a lottery that would be run over six weeks, giving people ample time to register. "Registration for the lottery is still open and will remain so until open till 23.00 on Sunday, January 31.” The committee stated it had received a lot of feedback regarding the ‘price’, or ‘cost’, ‘admission charge’ or ‘fee’ for our charity event, it added. “The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle imposes none of these – 90% all monies given by you to the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle are donations to the charities,” it stated. “Like any charity event, there are

20

Killarney Advertiser 29.01.16

running costs, and the remaining 10% goes to cover these running costs.” They also noted the nonrefundable €10 donation was put in place to prevent people trying to gain unfair advantage by entering the lottery multiple times. Questions on the lottery registration process in relation to the number of previous Ring of Kerry Charity Cycles taken part in and how much money participants plan to raise were also addressed. “These questions are purely for research purposes,” they stated. The statement also addrsesed the €170 minimum commitment to sign up with a charity. “At time of writing, more than 10% of all people who registered to cycle with a charity in last year’s cycle haven’t returned their agreed sponsorship. "To ensure this doesn’t happen again and to protect the charities, those cycling with a charity are asked to fundraise a minimum of €170. "The reason for this figure is that this was the average amount raised by fundraisers who cycled with a charity in 2015’s event,” added the committee.

Tricel wishes Richard well on retirement THE management and staff of Tricel (Killarney) paid tribute to Richard Collette who recently retired following 36 years with the company. Richard joined Tricel (Killarney) in August 1979. “We wish Richard every happiness and good health for the future,” stated the team at Tricel.

Athletic Bidding For National Glory THE sporting spotlight falls close to home this weekend as the Killarney Athletic AFC under-12 soccer team step it out on the national stage. The Killarney club host Johnstown FC from Navan, Co Meath, tomorrow Saturday, January 30, at Woodlawn, Killarney, at 2pm. Killarney Athletic are just one of 32 teams remaining in this prestigious National U12 Schoolboys FAI Cup. Killarney Athletic have already played three rounds of the National Cup and enjoyed impressive victories in the following games. On October 3, 2015, Killarney Athletic played Ballingarry, Co Limerick, away and won 5-2. In the second round, on October 17, 2015, Killarney Athletic played Granagh, Co Limerick, at home and two goals from Conal Gallagher helped them to a 2 -1 victory. In the third round, on November 21, Killarney Athletic hosted Moneypoint from Clare and won 2-1. Coilte Cronin scored the goal in normal time and Alex Hennigan netted the winner in the extra time period. John Dineen and Martin Muldoon are in charge of this very talented group of young players. Johnstown are a very fancied side and will present a very formidable challenge. However home advantage is a huge advantage and Killarney Athletic would appreciate all the local support they can get. The game is set to go ahead at Killarney Athletic's Woodlawn venue but may be subject to change to another local venue depending on weather conditions and the state of the pitch. Killarney Athletic squad: Sam Benson, Cillian Courtney, Sean Dineen, Conal Gallagher, Alex Hennigan, Matthew Horgan, Dara Looney, Mark Long, Cian Lynch, Stephen Moynihan, Teddy Muldoon, Karl McCarthy, David O’Donoghue, Hugh O’Malley, Se O’Meara.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A CAR ACCIDENT By John Healy JP Healy & Co Insurances ltd

Being involved in a car accident can be a traumatic experience. While vehicle damage can be repaired or replaced the health and well being of all passengers should be paramount. Celebrations take newlyweds from Muckross to the Med By Eve Kelliher

SCENIC Muckross and the sunsplashed Mediterranean will both live on in Marion Breen and Joseph O’Keeffe’s memories as key parts of their wedding celebrations. Torc Waterfall and Muckross Abbey provide stunning backdrops to the pictures in the couple’s wedding album and the bride and groom honeymooned in Italy and Greece. Marion, from Leamyglissane, Gneeveguilla, and Joe, from Ballinahulla, Ballydesmond, were wed in the Church of the Holy Rosary in Gneeveguilla in a ceremony led by Fr Pat O’Donnell. After posing for the camera of Micheal O’Sullivan, they re-joined their guests at The Malton Hotel for the reception. The bride’s sister Gretta Breen was maid of honour while Marian McCarthy and Rita Murphy were bridesmaids. David Finucane was best man with Shane O’Keeffe and Sean O’Connor as groomsmen. Marion and Joe’s paths had

crossed on nights out over the years in Killarney but it wasn’t until they were in Dublin seven years ago that they became an item. The couple got engaged during Christmas 2013 and were wed on the day of their seventh anniversary. “We had an amazing day with all our family and friends, things couldn’t have gone any better,” said the bride. The bride looked stunning in a dress sourced in Rice’n’Roses in Cork and the groom and his groomsmen cut a dapper dash in suits by Formally Yours, Killarney. The bridal hair was by Allure Hair Salon and the makeup was by What Women Want. Ger O'Riordan was the videographer and Breeda Nagle, Sliabh Luachra Florists, Gneeveguilla, took care of the floral arrangements. The newlyweds honeymooned in Florence, Italy, and also enjoyed a cruise around the Greek islands. They will reside in Leamyglissane, Gneeveguilla.

TIME FOR A TIPPLE In association with CarryOut Off Licence, Tralee and Muckross Rds., Killarney

Killarney’s craft brewers offer quality beer SOMEONE said to me recently, “You’ll be able to pick up brewing equipment very cheaply in a year or two.” It is understandable, given the last few years, that people now see bubbles everywhere. Instead of building houses to sell to each other, are we now, in almost every town and village, brewing craft beer with the hope that a sustainable market will materialise for it?

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

The issue we see at CarryOut is that, by their nature, a craft beer drinker is unfaithful – always trying the newest beer on the market, unlikely to simply find a beer they like and stick. It is difficult to see that they will all last, some because the quality just isn’t there and some because, if unable to get distribution, their local market will simply be too small to be viable.

It would seem that the local guys here are probably safe – all three (Killarney, Torc and King Puck) have distribution deals and the quality is not in doubt. Beat of the bodhrán heralds start of spring I HAVE to say, it’s a real rite of spring if ever there was one. As we journey through the year we’re about to wave goodbye to winter and all its storms and strife – in the most melodic fashion. Confirmation that spring has sprung came accompanied by the sound of delicate harp music this week, at the launch of The Gathering Traditional Festival. The event, which returns to Killarney for its 17th year from February 17 to 21, also always signals the start of the longer days to come. A bit like a human version birdsong! Celebrating the craic and culture of Irish traditional music and dance, The Gathering features concerts, céilís, sessions and storytelling as well as set dancing, singing and instrument masterclasses. Headquartered at The Gleneagle Hotel, this five-day festival attracts trad fans from the US, Britain, France, Germany and all over Ireland. Highlights include performances by Danú, Ushers Island, Jackie Daly, Matt Cranitch and Paul DeGrae. Stepping it out for this year’s céilís are Ui Bhriain, Neily O’Connor, the Abbey Céilí Band, Striolán Céilí Band and Johnny Reidy. The Schools Outreach Programme will once again visit schools. Legendary storyteller Eddie Lenihan, along with fellow seanchais Jim Maher and Batt Burns, will recount a series of tall tales throughout the festival. Festival passes cost just e50 and include entry to all concerts and céilís. Tickets to individual concerts and céilís are also available and range from e10 to e30. Try Not to Breathe by Holly Seddon

ALEX is sinking. Slowly but surely, she's cut herself off from everything but her one true love drink. Until she's forced to write a piece about a coma ward, where she meets Amy. Amy is lost. When she was 15, she was attacked and left for dead in a park not far from her house. Her attacker was never found. Since then, she has drifted in a lonely, timeless place. She's as good as dead, but not even her doctors are sure how much she understands.

Alex and Amy grew up in the same suburbs, played the same music, flirted with the same boys. And as Alex begins to investigate the attack, she opens the door to the same danger that has left Amy in a coma... This work of suspense is captivating. It has a razor-sharp, fastpaced plot and a wonderfully complex characters.

CELEBRATION OF SCHOOLS

FROM this Sunday, January 31, throughout Ireland in all Catholic schools, both primary and secondary, Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated. It is a week to honour and rededicate ourselves to all that is good in Catholic schools. This week, to mark the occasion, I attended short ceremonies in two secondary schools, Mercy Mounthawk, Tralee, and Boherbue Comprehensive. The theme this year is, “Challenged to proclaim God’s Mercy”. It is linked to the two beautiful phrases, “Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful”, and “Merciful like the Father” and the Holy Year of Mercy. God fully understands human weakness and need. God’s goodness to each of us is sure: he asks us in turn to be good to each other, especially to the poor and any people in great need. That is “mercy”. The contribution and willing cooperation of all partners in education is worthy of great praise: the Department of Education and Science, the teaching and support staff, the student body, the parents council and all parents, the board of management and the local parish communities. I believe in the fruitfulness and importance of every contribution to education. The years spent in education are of immense importance in every child’s development, their reaching their full human potential. As bishop I say sincere thanks on behalf of all the parish communities to all the partners in education. This year I am especially mindful that throughout Ireland all national schools have recently renewed their boards of management – great dedicated voluntary service. There is so much that is good in all our schools. Believe in the value of your contribution. Continue to make it wholeheartedly. Bishop Ray Browne, Diocese of Kerry

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS FOR ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL

NEW Eucharistic ministers are being recruited for St Mary’s Cathedral. You might consider it yourself, or you might know of someone you think would be suitable for it. After initial training and formation for the ministry, you would receive a timetable of their allotted Masses that would help your own planning, and you would be ministering at a Mass time that would suit you. Would you consider it? Contact the parish office or one of the priests to find out more.

Yoga for Children Elaine O’Donoghue of Navé Yoga explains how yoga can benefit younger practitioners

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is hosting its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition. Here Jill Duggan explains how toning tables can help you streamline your body

WEIGHT-LOSS is a three-part process: Exercising and cutting calories are vital, but your mental outlook can mean the difference between success and failure.

Self-defeating thoughts are often the most overlooked factors when a dieter gets off track. You feel disappointed when a quick fix turns out to anything but! Sticking with any major lifestyle change can be difficult, if not impossible. The key is to adopt the right attitude before you start your plan. If you're really serious about slimming down, you need to think long-term. That's why it helps to ready yourself emotionally to take on the challenge. These eight strategies will help strengthen your mind-set. You probably have lots of reasons for wanting

to tone up. Not all, however, may be good ones. If your decision develops primarily out of pressure from someone else, your conviction to succeed could diminish over time. To ensure success, you need to develop the will to improve your life, not someone else's vision of it. Start by listing all the reasons you can think of for toning up. Highlight any that include other people. Rewrite the list, omitting the highlighted items. Next, inspect each one for phrases like "have to" or "must". Such words imply obligation, not desire; eventually, they'll also invite the instinct to rebel. Translate each "have to" into a "want to". If your reasons lose their relevance, pare down the list again, until you find two or three of the most compelling motivations.

And you have no excuses at the moment – our sale is now on. When you buy one course of toning tables, you get a second course free – 20 sessions for the price of 10.

THESE days children are in desperate need of relaxation. They are more often than not over stimulated, over scheduled and not provided with the tools or the time to learn to be quiet and calm. The little downtime they have is often taken over by television, video games or loud music! Yoga can provide children with the tools required to relax and they can then carry these tools into their lives outside of the yoga class. For kids, relaxation counteracts the effect of stress by allowing the immune system to recover and function more effectively. It helps to increase blood flow to the organs and glands, calms the central nervous system, reduces muscle tension and encourages deep breathing. Simple relaxation techniques which can be learned in the yoga class help to improve verbal and spatial memory, reduce anxiety, enhance creativity and encourage positive coping strategies in children. Children who have relaxation incorporated into their routine are said to sleep better, concentrate longer, have better memories and are less prone to mood swings. Yoga has many more fantastic benefits for children including increased body awareness and positive body image, improved balance and flexibility, improved breathing and lung capacity, enhanced physical strength and stamina and enhanced immune system. Navé Yoga holds children’s classes on Mondays, 5-8 year olds at 3.30pm and 9-13 year olds at 4.30pm. Contact us on 087-2601624 to book in.

Kerry and Dublin stars team up for charity NORMALLY vying with each other on rival teams, Kerry star Peter Crowley and Dubs star David Byrne have joined forces in aid of a charity fashion show for LauraLynn House. Both are studying for a master’s degree at DCU Business School. Each year DCU Business School Alumni choose a charity to support. This year, the charity selected is LauraLynn House, Ireland’s children’s hospice. A group of full-time Master’s students in DCU Business School decided as part of their Next Generation Management module, to organise a fundraising event in partnership with the Alumni for this charity. The team of eight, who are led by Davey and Peter, are all inter-county Gaelic footballers and are Shane Carey (Monaghan), Niamh Lister (Meath), Philippa Greene (Dublin), Conor McNally (Armagh), Simon McCoy (Armagh) and Conor Grogan (Louth). from teams around the country. The presenters for the fashion show will be Maria Walsh, journalist, presenter and former Rose of Tralee and James Butler, fashion editor, presenter and blogger. Clothes for the show are being provided by Tommy Bowe’s XV Kings label, Paul Galvin’s Vanguard label, Scribes of London, Debenhams and The Dress Pantry. Sinead Hansard will provide the musical entertainment during the interval. The LauraLynn Children’s Hospice Foundation was set up in 2001 by Jane and Brendan McKenna after their daughters, Laura, four, and 13-year-old Lynn, died within two years of each other. Having had personal experience of the lack of respite or specialist care for children with life-limiting conditions, Jane and Brendan established the LauraLynn Foundation and dreamed of building a hospice dedicated to their memory. This was realised in 2011 when the hospice opened. Tickets for the fashion show cost €22 and are on sale through Eventbrite at the following link - http://bit.ly/ DCUBSAFashionShow

Preparing for the celebration of Confirmation THE celebration of Confirmation is a sacred and important moment on a long journey of faith development. Together with Baptism and First Holy Communion it opens the door to full membership of the Christian community. It is the beginning of the young adult’s ownership of their faith, supported and nourished by their family and their faith community. In the words of Pope Benedict XVI in the Sacrament Caritatis 19: “In pastoral work it is always important to make Christian families part of the process of initiation. Receiving Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion are key moments not only for the individuals receiving them but also for the entire family, which should be supported in its educational role by the various elements of the ecclesial community. "Here I would emphasise the importance of First Holy Communion….. Parish pastoral programmes should make the most of this highly significant moment.”

Help your child choose the perfect outfit

Web: www.fredasfamilyfood.com

THE sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation are key times in a child’s spiritual growth and so allowing them to feel relaxed and comfortable will ensure they can focus on the meaning of it all – and of course celebrate the occasion. Stylish options abound both for First Holy Communion and Confirmations, and for both boys and girls. There are top-class dresses, veils, headdresses and accessories to suit absolutely every budget. When it comes to the dress, try out different lengths for size, as there is a selection of every length from fulllength to ballet-length to short. Don’t forget the gloves, purses, keepsake rosary beads and bibles and ties for the boys. Boys will also be delighted with the

wide range of suits and smart-casual outfits that abound in Kerry stores. Not only that but those all-important gifts for communicants are also in stock now. With some schools now opting to have Confirmation candidates wear their school uniforms, the focus can at times be on choosing an outfit for the celebration after the ceremony. Let your child decide whether he or she wants to go casual, smart-casual or all-out glam – there is an abundance of choice in all categories, again to suit absolutely all pockets. Adults will also be keen to wear their best bib and tucker on the big day and accordingly local boutiques offer excellent colour and outfit combinations.

Give a child a keepsake to cherish SEEKING the perfect gift for children making their Confirmation or First Holy Communion? If your child, godchild, niece, nephew, grandchild, or family friend is about to celebrate this landmark occasion, then a present that they will cherish for a lifetime would be very welcome. While money has been a traditional gift in Ireland, some may want to choose something a little personal, to remind the child of the sacrament and its importance. These days, treasured keepsake gifts can be found to suit all budgets, from picture frames to inscribed jewellery, and from prayer books and rosary beads to a commemorative photoshoot.

HOME & AWAY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + VIEWS F TIPPING POINT Alarmingly, we have made enough plastic since the Second World War to coat the Earth entirely in cling film, an international study has revealed, and this disclosure confirms that human activities are now having a pernicious impact on our world. The research, published in the journal Anthropocene, demonstrates clearly that plastic waste is everywhere. Everywhere is polluted with the remains of water containers, supermarket bags, polystyrene lumps, compact discs, cigarette filter tips, nylons and other plastics. Some are in the form of microscopic grains, others in lumps. The impact is always damaging. “The results came as a real surprise,” said the study’s lead author, Professor Jan Zalasiewicz, of Leicester University. “We were aware that humans have been making increasing amounts of different kinds of plastic – from Bakelite to polyethylene bags to PVC – over the last 70 years, but we had no idea how far it had travelled round the planet. It turns out not just to have floated across the oceans, but has sunk to the deepest parts of the sea floor. This is not a sign that our planet is in a healthy condition either.” The crucial point about the study’s findings is that the appearance of plastic should now be considered as a marker for a new epoch. We are actually altering geology. Human activities are becoming the dominant influence on climate and the environment. Humanity’s activities may have tipped the planet into a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene. In particular, radioactive isotopes released by atom bombs left a powerful signal in the ground that will alert future civilisations that something bad was going on. Also, increasing carbon dioxide in the oceans, the massive manufacture of concrete and the widespread use of aluminium were also highlighted as factors that indicate the birth of the Anthropocene. Lesser environmental impacts, including the rising use of plastics, were also mentioned in passing. But Zalasiewicz argues that the humble plastic bag and plastic drink container play a far greater role in changing the planet than has been realised. “Just consider the fish in the sea,” he said. “A vast proportion of them now have plastic in them. They think it is food and eat it, just as seabirds feed plastic to their chicks. Then some of it is released as excrement and ends up sinking on to the seabed. The planet is slowly being covered in plastic.” As the paper makes clear, plastic is already on the ocean floor, remote islands, buried underground in landfill sites and in the food chain. Even the Polar Regions, generally considered still to be pristine zones, are becoming affected. In 2014, researchers found “significant” amounts of plastic granules frozen in the Arctic Sea, having been swept there from the Pacific Ocean. In some cases, wildlife adapts to the spread of plastic. For example, on islands such as Diego Garcia, hermit crabs have taken to using plastic bottles as homes. However, most of the impact on wildlife is harmful. Creatures ranging from seabirds to turtles become entangled in plastic and drown or choke to death. “The trouble is that plastic is very slow to degrade, so we are going to be stuck with this problem for a long time,” said Zalasiewicz.deter them.

EATING WELL Experts now think bacteria found in the gut and mouth can affect the immune system, causing a host of crippling inflammatory conditions. The ground-breaking British-led research will now investigate the link in the hope of finding life changing dietary therapies in five years. The multi-million pound study will analyse trillions of gut microbes in the hope that diseases like rheumatoid arthritis can be tackled by treating its causes rather than its symptoms. Arthritis Research UK has already contributed £2million towards the landmark project. Scientists are confident it could lead to the development of preventative medicines or methods of treatment, which could be as straightforward as changing the way we eat. Previous studies have shown it is possible to find temporary pain relief in cheap and widely available foods such as fish, nuts, vegetables and spices. Tinned sardines, Brazil nuts, mushrooms, cherries, turmeric, ginger, broccoli, kale and garlic all possess potent properties that help keep the condition at bay. Oleocanthal, a molecule found in extra virgin olive oil, has similar anti-inflammatory properties to ibuprofen. Together with fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and oily

fish it has been considered a key part of the “cure-all” Mediterranean diet for centuries. And studies have shown that those who eat a Greek diet have a significantly lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis compared to those who gorge on high-fat sugary foods. Professor Fiona Powrie, Director of the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in Oxford, said: “The point is to understand whether there is a link between gut bacteria, rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis. If so, it may be possible to change the bacteria that live in our intestines by dietary intervention.” It is hoped the research may one day end the need for sufferers to down a daily cocktail of drugs. Dr Stephen Simpson, of Arthritis Research UK, said: “This knowledge is absolutely essential if we are to develop new treatments that could one day revolutionise the way we prevent and treat painful and debilitating conditions.” Arthritis is caused when cartilage between bones erodes and joints rub together. It is caused when the immune system malfunctions and attacks cells, making joints stiff and painful. The common “wear and tear” condition blights mainly, but not exclusively, the elderly.

Killarney teenager survives N-bomb party IT IS reported that a teenager from Killarney was among the six people rushed to hospital last week for treatment after a party in Cork. The youth was a friend of Alex Ryan from Millstreet, who tragically died in hospital on Saturday, after he and five others allegedly took the 2CB drug at the party in a rented house earlier that week. The teenagers were among the six who were rushed to Cork University Hospital for treatment after a passer-by came upon the partygoers in the early hours of Tuesday of last week.

S FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD THE WEATHER & PAIN

Man with two handguns arrested at Disneyland, Paris

There can be no doubt but weather affects us in every way. We have experienced so much wind, rain and storm this past year that people are literally sick of it. The constant rain forces people to stay indoors and simple things become onerous tasks. Simply keeping fuel to the fire involves endless trips to the coal shed while risking life & limb & being blown hither and thither every time you venture outdoors. It’s well for those who have central heating but not everyone has that comfort. And comfort it certainly is these days as the cost of heating oil is so low. Neither is it easy for elderly people who have little choice but to peer out through the windows at the driving rain all day every day. It would depress anyone. It’s not just that they are kept indoors, they are deprived of face-to-face interaction, and they are forced to miss conversations with friends and neighbours. Making and maintaining friendships have to be done face-to-face and Facebook is simply no substitute. When snow falls and access is difficult, we all look in on our neighbours but I wonder do we share the same urgency when it’s simply raining all the time. The drop of rain makes a hole in the stone, not by violence but by falling often. Likewise, the shower of rain won’t kill, but its consistency will do severe damage. We need to look out for one another. So, I’m not at all surprised to read that British doctors are investigating whether there really is a link between the weather and pain. They claim that patients with chronic conditions such as arthritis often report that their symptoms are worse when the day is damp or cold. Now they're

asking thousands of sufferers across the country to take part in their research by providing data via their mobile phones. And they hope that soon the information could be used to provide a daily pain forecast, in a similar way that the pollen count is now included in weather forecasts. "We're asking people to collect their symptoms every day and then the GPS on their phone automatically collects the weather data where they are." said Dr Will Dixon, a Rheumatologist and Clinical Epidemiologist at the University of Manchester. "Collectively that brings together a massive data set through time that we can analyse. If we understand the relationship between weather and pain then we hope that we'll be able to forecast pain." Talking to BBC Breakfast, he added: "For years working as a rheumatologist it's so common that my patients will tell me that their joints are better or worse because of the weather and yet when you ask them what is it within the weather that influences their pain you get such different answers so we're going to try and work this out. Some people think it's related to the damp but other people say it's related to the cold, some people think it's worse when it's hot." In the future, knowing the link between weather and pain could also help with treatment options, said Dr Dixon. "If we know that [weather] pressure is associated with pain then we can pass that information back to other researchers to work out why it is that pressure relates to pain," he said.

MORE THAN A WHIFF Researchers suggest teenagers who use e-cigarettes are three times more likely to take up smoking than those who have never touched the devices. A survey of more than 2,300 students found just under a third had used e-cigarettes by the age of 14. One-in-five of those who had used the vapour-creating devices had smoked real cigarettes by the time of a second survey a

year later, compared with just 6 per cent of those who had not used them. The survey suggests that e-cigarette use among adolescents is not without behavioural implications. They suggest the findings should be considered by those who make policy decisions about the availability of e-cigarettes to adolescents.

A MAN found to be carrying two handguns was arrested at a hotel at Disneyland Paris, a French police official said. Reports in France have said the 28-year-old was stopped around midday yesterday, with the weapons in a suitcase. It is thought he was arrested after the bag went through a security scanner. Reports in France say he also had bullets and a copy of the Koran. No one was injured during the arrest, the official said. There are several hotels around Disneyland Paris, which is east of the French capital and is among Europe’s most-visited tourist attractions. France remains under a state of emergency since Islamic extremist attacks around Paris killed 130 people in November.

Teen saves money by flying via Berlin instead of taking train from Sheffield to Essex JORDAN COX, 18, is making headlines after claiming to have made a saving of £7.72 on his train journey from Sheffield to Essex – by catching a flight to Berlin. It did mean he went 1017 miles out of his way but he also got to spend a few hours exploring the city. Jordon Cox, who blogs for moneysavingexpert.com as The Coupon Kid, was planning on travelling to and from Sheffield by train. He managed to get a cheap ticket for his journey to Sheffield but discovered that his return ticket to Essex would cost him £47. After a bit of investigating, Jordan discovered that flying from West Midlands Airport to Berlin, seven hours spent exploring the city, a plane ticket to Stansted and a bus to Essex would end up costing him less.

Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle forced out of Monte Carlo rally KRIS MEEKE and his local co-driver Paul Nagle driving a Citroen DS3 were forced to retire from the opening round of the World Rally Championship in Monte Carlo last weekend. Up to their retirement they were the only team mounting a challenge to the eventual winner Sebastien Ogier, the 2015 World Champion. Starting Saturday’s stages, Meeke and Nagle were only 9.5 behind Ogier, swopping the lead on a few occasions throughout the first day, but by stage 11 on day 2, they had reduced the lead by a further 3.4 seconds. However, on the following stage things started to unravel. On a right-hand corner their Citroen encountered a large rock that had come loose and ripped the sump guard from the car which was there to provide protection. Although they made it to the end of the stage they had to retire on the road section due to the damage caused to the gearbox. Kris Meeke outlined his demise: “It happened on the exit of a fast bend, I felt a big impact under the car even though I had taken the same line this morning. We now know that there was a large bedrock that must have come loose as more cars completed the stage. Nevertheless, it was strong performance we produced with Paul, the team and the car, so I’m pleased about that. It’s encouraging for the rest of the season.”

LEADING estate agency Sherry Fitzgerald will once again bring its Irish Property Show to London on Saturday, February 20. At the event which will be held in Millennium Gloucester Hotel from 11am-3pm, it will be displaying a sample of properties from all across Ireland and giving UK purchasers an opportunity to meet property professionals from several of their offices across the country in one day, and in one location. Mary Dillon, head of Sherry FitzGerald Countrywide, said: “The performance of the Irish economy was remarkable in 2015 with GDP expected to exceed 6%, positioning Ireland as the fastest growing economy in the euro area for the second consecutive year.” The recovery in both the economy and in the residential market have supported the ongoing appetite from overseas investors for Irish property, added Ms Dillon. “In Sherry FitzGerald we agree. Over the difficult years of the global recession we continued to promote Irish property in Ireland and abroad and in 2016 we will continue to do this with our London Property Show – an event that will showcase the very best of Irish property from all over the country.

Dazzling display from young Killarney pianists OVER 40 piano and keyboard students performed at a concert on Saturday at the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service youth centre. The musicians are all students at Killarney School of Music and their teacher is Ruti Lachs. “The repertoire included group pieces such as You Are My Sunshine, with up to eight keyboard players playing together; classical solos on piano including arrangements

of Sonata Pathetique by Beethoven, and a Chopin nocturne; and traditional Irish tunes and popular songs arranged for piano,” said Ruti. “All the children performed very well, and impressed their audience, which numbered over 100. CENTRAL APPLICATIONS OFFICE FEBRUARY 1 DEADLINE IS FAST APPROACHING Are you planning on applying for a college place through the CAO? Then remember that Monday, February 1, is the closing date for applications, says career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan IF YOU haven’t already done so, log on to www.cao.ie and register your application before 5.15pm on that date. Take your time entering the details that are required and make sure they are correct before submitting them. The application fee is e40 and once you are registered you will get your CAO identification number. Knowing what courses to put on your application and in what order can be a difficult choice for many who are applying. Each applicant is given the option to list ten course choices on the Level 8 list and ten choices on the Level 7/6 list. Course choices should be listed according to your genuine personal preference from 1 to 10. It would be advisable not to list a course, even at the bottom of your list, unless you would be happy to accept it if it is offered to you.

If you are not sure, at this stage, of courses or order of preference do the best you can at entering the course choices you are considering and use the free change of mind option from May 5 to July 1 to make your changes if need be. (Restricted entry courses which require additional assessment procedures must be included on your course choices list by February 1). It is only by researching courses thoroughly that you will be able to make informed choices. Familiarise yourself with all aspects of the courses you’re thinking of applying to including entry requirements and subjects you will be studying throughout the duration of the course. This information will be available from the college prospectuses and websites and if possible, it would also be helpful to speak with a stu-

dent who is already on or who has completed such courses in order to obtain any further insights which will help with your final choices. See www.cao.ie for further deadlines and full timetable of events. •You can contact career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan by emailing info@careeroptionskerry.com or calling 087-2028185 or see www.careerSenator Marie Moloney.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

I hold you tight within my heart, And there you will remain , Until the joyous day arrives Thay we will meet again.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.C.

POWERFUL NOVENA This novena never fails. Say it on the hour for 9 hours. Jesus who has said, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be open to you. Through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother, I knock, I ask that my prayer will be granted (Make your request). Oh Jesus, has said all you ask the Father in my name, he will grant through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. 18th anniversary Sheehan

In loving memory of Batty O’Brien, late of 105 Pinewood Estate who died on the 28th January 2014.

Cherished memories of Con Sheehan late of Crosstown Glenflesk whose anniversary occurs on January 28th.

A Father’s touch, a Daddy’s kiss, A grieving Daughter, you’re greatly missed.

Our hearts are full of memories We treasure them with care The way you had to leave us Will always seem unfair. No farewells were spoken We did not say goodbye You were gone before we knew it And only God knows why. A son is special and so is his name Without you to love is never the same. But as long as we live We will always be glad Grateful and proud of the son that we had.

An empty house, an empty chair, A Father’s love, no longer there. A broken heart, tear filled eye, Another soul to fill the sky. Many memories in my mind, Some I laugh, some I cry. The times we shared, the laughs we had, Things I miss when I think of you Dad. Realising that’s all I have to hold on to, Only memories, of what once was you.

Fondly remembered by your Mam Norrie, Dad Paudie, sister Helena, brothers Pat and Mike and Donal and Joanne.

Missing your laugh, I will never again hear, That is the reality that fills me with so much fear. No more smile on your face, No more warmth of your embrace. The last hug, the last kiss, The last “Goodbye” leaves me with one last wish...

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club Men's

Club Captain Liam Hartnett is pleased to be able to advise the membership that the Mahony’s Point Course will re-open for play next weekend, some restrictions may still be in force, but at least, and at last, we will be able to start on the first tee-box, and finish on the 18th green. Course Manager Enda Murphy has advised that the repairs to the greens most affected, namely the 1st and 4th on Killeen, and the 16th on Mahony’s Point, has progressed quite well, but the current inclement weather has, once again, put progress back a week or so, but he is nevertheless confident that the previously advised opening dates will be met, and are as outlined above for Mahony’s Point, and should be in early March for the Killeen Course. Enda has also advised that while the re-development is progressing, albeit slowly, that consideration must be given to preventing further re-occurrences of the recent devastation, and to this end some further radical alterations made need to be considered, in the not too distant future. Liam also wishes to acknowledge the very recent, and untimely passing of one of the very best golfers ever to represent our Club, James Loughnane, passed away in early January, James had represented our Club on numerous occasions, but his most notable success was in being part of the team that garnered the “Barton Shield” for Killarney Golf and Fishing Club in 1980, for the first and only time that Killarney has won a “Senior” National Championship, the other members of that team were, three times South of Ireland Champion Michael Guerin, Sean Coyne and also another recently deceased member of that team, Dr. Arthur Spring, “May they both rest in peace”, they were under the stewardship and tutelage of Derry Pyne Team Manager, and the Club Captain Brian Mulcahy, and they won the trophy on the final green in a thrilling final, played over the famed “Lahinch” Golf Course, in County Clare.

Irish Indoor Rowing Championships The Irish Indoor Rowing Championships took place at the UL Arena last Saturday January 23rd 2016. As predicted, our seventeen athletes who competed returned to Killarney with new personal best records and a tally of six medals. We are immensely proud of our competitors young and ‘not so young’. New to the Indoor Rowing Champs were Ellen Farndon, Ross McCarthy and Amber Pomeranz, each one of whom put in fantastic performances. The immensity of the occasion did not put them off at all. Congratulations to Ellen Farndon J13, who came away with a medal in each hand, a silver for her 4 minute piece and bronze in the 500m sprint. Our super J16 girls rowed their hearts out in very tough competitions, the 2000m and the 500m sprint, with Annie O’Donoghue coming in only 2 seconds outside the gold in the 500m. Congratulation Annie on your well- earned silver and well done to your club-mates Ciara Brown and Ciara Moynihan on your amazing erg times in these races. Best wishes to Leona Brown who unfortunately could not compete on the day, and we hope you get well soon. Staying with our ladies, we enjoyed super races from Lauren McCarthy and Siobhán Burns, who never fail to give their all. They were up against stellar competition in both 2000m and 500m sprints and weren’t a bit fazed by the talent surrounding them, making all of us watching so proud to be cheering on their every stroke. Indeed, Siobhán Burns was only 2 seconds outside the

medals in her 500m sprint. Another lady who added to the medal tally is Pauline O’Brien, who slashed 8 seconds off her personal best while finishing second in the 2000m, and after a long 5 hour wait, came only one second behind gold in the 500m sprint , bagging for herself another, very satisfying, silver medal. The Workmen ‘Men’ did not want to be outdone by the ladies and we congratulate them all, Seán Farndon and Ross McCarthy J15, Ruadhán Mac Curtáin and Jacub Kunicki J16, Mikey O’Donoghue, Tom O’Leary, Dylan Bartlett and Kamil Kunicki J18, who between them rowed in huge races with up to 130 competitors, showing just how to slash personal bests and sweat buckets!! Well done boys…you may have been just outside the medals but you did yourselves and Workmens Rowing Club proud. Last, but by no means least, our very modest Hugh Rudden, who before a blistering 500m sprint, took on the Mens’ 2000m Lightweight Irish Record holder, coming in only seconds behind him and pocketing a bronze medal for his efforts, while cutting five seconds off his own personal best. Congratulations Hugh on a fantastic achievement. Many thanks to Coaches Mikey Joe Burns, Hannah O’Donoghue and Anthony McCarthy, and to all mentors, family and friends who accompanied our rowers on the day. Training Training continues as per your coaches’ texts. The clean-up continues at the clubhouse, and many thanks to all who have swept, scrubbed and washed the lake out of the clubhouse in recent weeks. Killarney RFC

Senior XV: Our seniors continued their Munster Junior League campaign, last Sunday with a short road trip to Ballymalis to take on Killorglin. This Kerry Derby would be a first for both teams - a first derby at Killorglin’s new home ground in Listry. Conditions were favourable for a game of rugby and the home team worked well to deliver a try early on. Full back Paudie Sheahan kept us in the match with penalties. A second try was scored in the second half, allowing the home side win this local derby on a scoreline of 12 points to 9. Paudie Sheahan scored all of our points from the boot. Next up for the lads is a home fixture against Division 2 side Abbeyfeale in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Plate. Kick off is at 2pm. Let’s get out and support the lads this Sunday, in the very important match. U14’s: The U14’s are back to winning ways following a trip to North Kerry to take on Listowel RFC last Saturday. A fantastic game of rugby ensued, with the visitors winning on a score of 17-7. Tries came from Liam Randles, Mark Sheehan and Craig McKenzie Vass with a conversion

from Cian Murphy. Listowel were physically the bigger team but the work rate from the Killarney boys was evident. Backs and forwards gelled and the defence was exceptional. Every player including the subs played positive, tough rugby on a wet heavy pitch. Thanks to Listowel Rfc for hosting us. Next Saturday, Killarney host Abbeyfeale at home in Aghadoe, at 11am. Minis: Our minis are due to host our round of the West Munster Blitz in the next few weeks. Very unfavourable weather over the past two months has meant that the pitches in Aghadoe remain waterlogged. We have been using the Astroturf pitch at Fossa as well as the gym at St. Brendans for the past few months, however we are chomping at the bit to get to train and play on grass, as soon as possible. Thanks to Fossa Astroturf and St. Brendan’s College for their huge support to date. We will update all parents as to the plan for the next few weeks once confirmed. Any questions, contact Mini Co-Ordinator Liam Murphy on 087-4145662.

Tributes paid as Kerry’s top garda retires THE county’s highest-ranking garda, Chief Garda Superintendent Pat Sullivan, called time on his career after 41 years. Chief Supt Sullivan was promoted to the role of Kerry’s top garda in May 2010. Originally from Glengarriff, Co Cork, he has been a member of An Garda Siochána since 1975. He previously worked along the border in Northern Ireland and in Limerick, but spent most of his career in Kerry. Over 500 people attended a coffee morning in Ballygarry House Hotel in his honour last Friday. The event doubled as a fundraiser for the Kerry Hospice Foundation, a charity close to the hearts of Pat and his wife Maura.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

‘Homecare would alleviate hospital overcrowding crisis’ THE lack of homecare that is available to the elderly and most vulnerable people in Kerry is disgraceful and scandalous. The hospital overcrowding situation has reached crisis point and I believe that home help services are the best and most effective means of reducing the pressure on hospitals, preventing injuries among the elderly and allowing people to live independently in their communities. The hospital overcrowding crisis and the cancellation of surgeries is a scandalous situation which I believe is compounded by the lack of resources and funding for home help services which is another shameful indictment of the Government. I’m sad to say that I know of far too many distressed and desperate elderly people who feel they have been abandoned by the Government when they need its support most.

Deputy Tom Fleming.

They include a 79-year-old infirm gentleman in Killarney who has suffered two strokes, is recovering from an operation to treat cancer and is living alone with just distant relatives to care for him. He has been granted just 45 minutes per week of homecare which is truly harrowing and unjustifiable. Frankly, it’s an insult. In 2015 the number of public patients waiting nine months or more for surgery increased by 5,600 following the cancellation of thousands of op-

erations due to overcrowding in emergency departments. The Government is constantly having to put a plaster on the wound that is the overcrowding crisis in hospitals without trying to find and reduce the cause of the blood-flow. I firmly believe that the situation is the cumulative impact of increased workloads and reduced resources on the quality of care and support that individual patients depend on. There is a serious and life-threatening lack of services and support in communities such as those in Kerry for people with disabilities and those enduring mental health and chronic conditions. These are among the youngest, oldest, and most at risk in society. Tom Fleming, Independent Kerry TD, Constituency Office, 62 New Street, Killarney

New legal aid scheme for troubled borrowers welcomed ON BEHALF of legal rights group FLAC (Free Legal Advice Centres) we welcome the announcement by Minister for Justice & Equality Frances Fitzgerald TD of the launch of a new legal support scheme for those in mortgage debt. The proposed scheme, to be administered through the Money Advice & Budgeting Service and with the involvement of the Legal Aid Board, is in line with recommendations made by FLAC over the last few years. Until now, there has been a dreadful failure of access to justice for poor people at risk of losing their homes. This is one of the most significant legal events in any person’s life and they should not be left to handle this on their own against powerful, well-resourced lenders. Some people have been able to get support from advocacy groups but what is needed is a systematic, state organised system that is available to people all around the country. If the details fulfil the promise of the announcement, this scheme, administered through the state-funded MABS and using the expertise of the Legal Aid Board, may fill what has been a scandalous gap. Minister Fitzgerald had said that the scheme builds on and complements measures already in place as promised by Government in May 2015. Noeline Blackwell, FLAC Director General, Via email

SEXTON CONCUSSED

Comhgáirdeas to St Mary's and to Templenoe who are through to their respective All-Ireland club finals.

Sexton was concussed once again and was stretchered off after only 10 minutes in the Leinster v Wasps. Concussion is a very serious injury unless treated by an expert and taken off for professional assistance. It is especially dangerous for Sexton because of his history. At long last the personnel in charge of the teams, the jockeys, the soccer players and the GAA and all physically contact sports are being educated on the potential seriousness of this injury. Hope we will never again hear of a player going down injured and a mentor going in to the scene of the injury moving the injured person and helping her, or him, adding, " Come on you are fine out, get up we need you badly, we're just a goal behind and you are the best to engineer a penalty for the love of the parish “

Neither side has been announced as we go to press, but we can expect experimental sides. In Tipp town on Sunday last Kerry used just six of those who started in the 2015 All-Ireland SFC. I expect Eamonn Fitzmaurice to beef up the team from the last outing for the

Referees Course An in service course for East Kerry referees is being help in Fossa CLG on the 2nd February, starting at 7.30pm.

KERRY and Dublin will open their Allianz NFL campaigns under lights in Croke Park tomorrow night. The respective managers will be wanting to have the bragging rights and the valuable league points, to ease the effects of possible lost points down the line and will be tapering their selections and training accordingly. We can assess the possibilities from strong lineouts but the available opportunities to blood new players for the real tests in the All-Ireland series will be central to the bosses' plans. Both sides will need two to three new players to take the places of retirees, those returning from the Santry Clinic and other centres of rehabilitation.

We wish this great Limerick player the best of luck.

FUN FOOTBALL: FUN FOOTBALL continues in the new community hall on Monday nights. During these sessions, children will be learning FUNdamental movement patterns that are needed for them to lead active lives in their teenage and adult years. A startling report recently released by the WHO remarked about the level of inactivity among children in Ireland, how sedentary children are becoming and how Ireland’s children are going to be the most obese in Europe by 2030. Drop out from sport is huge in the teenage years due to being “bad” at sport. If children realise that they are really good at some sports or at a particular aspect of a sport then they can go ahead and pursue that- be it Basketball Athletics, Martial Arts, Gymnastics, swimming…The list is endless and it is important to remember that all sports will complement each other. Gum shields are necessary and €2 per child to help cover the cost of the hall rental. Further details available from the mentors or on our Face-Book Page.

Proceedings got underway shortly after 7:30pm to a large attendance of members. Secretary, Matt O’Neill then read the AGM 2015 Minutes which were accepted. In his report, Matt recalled the successful year that was 2015. All three senior football teams brought home silverware. Our senior hurlers represented Kerry in the Munster Championships. Our ladies structure continues to grow and win silverware. The under-age goes from strength to strength to ensure that we have a treadmill of talent flowing through to our senior panels. Scór gets more vibrant with each year and finds more outlets to display the Club’s talents in music, song and dance. We continue to improve our amenities and the seating in our stand and painting of our Clubhouse presents a tremendous first impact for visitors. We continue to find new avenues for Club activity and this year we had Strictly Come Dancing, Tops of the Town and Fr Paddy’s card night. We also remembered our members who died during the year, especially our late Patron, Murt O’Shea. Matt finished by thanking all Officers for their support and assistance during his time in the role. In his address,

The Killarney Cougars U16 Girls winning captains Anna O'Reilly and Kate Maher with the cup at the Kerry Cup Finals at the Pres Gym Killarney.

Chairperson Denis Coleman, raised the importance of remembering the members of our club who played their own part in Irish History as we celebrate the centenary of the 1916 Rising. Also, this year, Dr. Crokes GAA Club celebrates 130 year of promoting Gaelic games and culture in the Killarney area and beyond. He acknowledge the great year we’ve had and paid special tribute to those who gave their time and energy, both on and off the field. He noted some personal highlights including the Scór groups, the U14 Footballers winning the County Féile, the senior hurlers trip to Limerick representing Dr. Crokes and Kerry in the Munster Club Hurling Championship and Fr. Paddy’s cards night in the clubhouse which has gone from strength to strength. He finished with a challenge for the members, simply to make a positive contribution to the club in the coming year, to play their part, no matter the size. Legion

THE SEM MARCH ON St Brendan’s College put an emphatic end to Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne’s stranglehold in Munster with a classy performance in the Corn Uí Mhuirí quarter final last Wednesday in Killarney. Played in Dr Crokes’ pitch in gloomy conditions, the reigning All-Ireland champions were hoping for a victory which would bring them a step closer to an unprecedented fifth Munster title in a row. The Sem, however, started well and never looked back, romping home 1-14 to 0-4 winners. Congratulations to Legion men Cian Gammell (corner back) and Peter McCarthy (wing forward) who contributed ably to what was an impressive all-round display, and also to Finbarr Murphy and Mike Pierce who were amongst the substitutes. Next up for St Brendan’s is a semi-final against St Flannan’s of Clare on February 6th. St Francis College (Rochestown) play HS Clonmel in the other semi. Best of luck to Cian, Peter, Finbarr, Mike and the whole panel as they prepare for their next outing.
