Soccer tournament in memory of Stephen WHEN Killarney mother Lotte Lyne came up with the idea of honouring the memory of her son Stephen she touched hearts throughout the community. Lotte set up the Stephen Lyne Foundation in a bid to foster empathy and kindness in primary schoolchildren through the Roots of Empathy programme and she has proved tireless in her mission. This week she told us at Killarney Advertiser how delighted she is that people of all ages have shown their support for the initiative, as the town gets set to host an indoor soccer tournament in memory of the popular teenager. Stephen, who died in a stabbing incident seven years ago, will be honoured during the tournament, which is scheduled to take place in early January. And the dramatic fog that swirled around town on Monday was no deterrent as the event’s organisers, Mike Sweeney, Thieman van Benthem

and Joe Daly unveiled the clarity of their vision for the event. “I am delighted to see local people taking on an initiative like this indoor soccer tournament, and I am hoping that it will inspire others to come up with initiatives of their own to raise money for the Stephen Lyne Foundation, as I cannot do it on my own,” said Lotte. “I need the community to be behind me so we can continue to grow in 2017.” Tom Tobin of Killarney Medals and Trophies will sponsor the trophies and medals while the cup will be sponsored by Scotts Hotel. The tournament will take place on January 7 and 8 in Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre and the sign-up deadline is December 30. The tournament entry fee is €100 per team and all details are on the website stephenlynefoundation.org

LOCAL historians are going to be walking down memory lane this month as they commemorate efforts made half a century ago to bring about a street name change for Plunkett Street. Craobh na nÁirne (the Killarney branch) of the Gaelic League will host a public event to recognise the efforts of Killarney Urban District Council in 1966 to bring about a street-name change for the golden jubilee of 1916. The event will take place in Killarney Outlet Centre on December 31 at 12pm as a finale to the 1916-2016 centenary celebrations. “The occasion will pay due respect to the role both Michael Collins and Joseph Mary Plunkett played before and during the Easter Rising 1916 – widely regarded as the seminal event leading to the realisation of the Republic of Ireland,” said one of the organisers, Seán Ó Luanaigh. Killarney Urban District Council resolved to change the names of the five principal streets in the town on May 21, 1920. In that year Killarney UDC was composed of nine Sinn Féin and three Independent members. “They proposed to hold a plebiscite for Main Street to become Pearse Street, New Street to be called Ashe Street, change High Street to O’Rahilly Street, Henn Street to be called Plunkett Street with both College Street and College Square to become McDermott Street in honour of 1916 leaders, two of whom, Thomas Ashe and The O’Rahilly, were from Kerry,” said Seán. “During the War of Independence some of those councillors were on active service in the local Flying Column or on the run and as a result the town ratepayers did not get an opportunity to vote for the name change.” In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising, the council conducted a plebiscite in the respective streets to ascertain whether four-sevenths of the ratepayers in each of the streets named would consent to the proposed changes. But the necessary four-sevenths in favour of a name change were not returned for any of the proposed streets. The monthly UDC meeting of March 1966 decided to hold a second plebiscite for the Henn Street ratepayers to change the name to Plunkett Street and more than four-sevenths of the ratepayers had voted for change in both places. Chairman TP Clifford proposed to change the names to Plunkett Street and Michael Collins Place respectively. The motion was seconded by Mr C McSweeney and was unanimously accepted by seven councillors.

Pres girls set to head back to the classroom OLD friendships will be renewed at the St Brigid’s Secondary School reunion on Wednesday, December 28. The class of 1986 will reunite for the event, which takes place at the Killarney Avenue Hotel at 8.45pm. You can pay for the event on the night, during which refreshments will be served. Contact Siobhan O’Sullivan on 086-152 3801 or email Christina Dennehy on tinadennehy@hotmail.com Anyone who attended St Brigid’s between 1981 and 1986 is more than welcome.

Question Our landlady lives in Spain and we pay rent into her bank account. Is it true that we need to collect the tax she is liable for? Answer

Killarney Advertiser 16.12.16

Yes, if you pay rent directly to a landlord (or landlady) who lives abroad, you must deduct tax from the rent and account for it to Revenue, whether by paying it to Revenue or by reducing your tax credits. You deduct the tax at the standard rate (20% at present) from the gross amount of rent that you pay. This deduction is not your tax relief – it is tax payable to Revenue from your landlady's income. Say, for example, you pay gross monthly rent of €1,500 directly to your landlady. The amount of tax to deduct is 20% of €1,500, which is €300. Subtract this from the gross rent to get net monthly rent of €1,200. You pay this to your landlady. The amount due to Revenue is the €300 per month that you deducted. (The situation is different for a tenant who pays rent through an agent to a landlord living abroad. In this situation, you do not deduct tax from the rent. The landlord’s collection agent must account for it in an annual tax return.) You must account to Revenue for the tax that you deduct from the gross rent. If you fail to deduct the tax and account for it, this will mean that you (not your landlady) will be liable for any tax that should have been deducted. If you pay tax under PAYE, you can account for it by reducing your tax credits and Standard Rate Cut-Off Point. You can notify your local Revenue Office and ask them to arrange this. Alternatively, you can make a tax return on Form 12 (pdf) and pay the retained amount to Revenue. nIf you pay tax under self-assessment, you should include the details of your rent with your annual return on Form 11 (pdf). A notice of assessment will then issue to you, showing your reduced tax credits. At the end of the year you must give your landlady a completed Certificate of Income Tax Deducted - Form R185 (pdf). Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Go green and keep it clean with Myers Waste & Recycling

Eamonn Myers, Kate Malone and Denis Myers of Myers Waste & Recycling.

A NEW waste disposal and recycling company has opened in Farranfore offering a fantastic service to households in mid Kerry. Myers Waste & Recycling, run by Denis Myers and Trevor Parry, has been in operation since August and has been met with great positivity from the public. The business, which has created seven jobs, is one of three private household collection companies in Kerry. “There needs to be competition in the market so the public can have a choice for customer service and affordability,” said Denis. “Waste collection is effectively a utility and should come at an affordable price for everybody.” Myers Waste & Recycling is offering a very competitive price of €160 for 6 months or €320 for 12 months, which is fixed. “We offer the largest bin volume at the lowest prices. For these prices, households can get a 360 litre recycling bin, 240 litre general waste bin, 140 litre compost/food bin, and 10 litre kitchen caddy,” said Trevor. Good customer service is paramount to Myers Recycling. The introduction of a weekly text messaging service to remind customers which bin to put out has gotten great feedback from customers. “Our customers are our business and keep us in a job working close to home,” said Denis. The 140-litre compost/food, which accepts grass cuttings, has been a major hit with customers and has become a unique selling point of the business. Another major selling point is the fixed price. Myers Waste & Recycling doesn’t charge by weight. Customers will be able to view their weights from lifts online or by email/post but rest assured these are a legal obligation and Myers Recycling are not charging by weight. “We believe there will be a higher contamination of recyclables,” said Denis. Currently, Myers Waste & Recycling is covering the Killarney area as well as Farranfore, Firies, Castleisland, Castlemaine, Keel, Milltown, Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Currow, Scartaglen, Rathmore and Kenmare, and other town lands. “We believe there will be higher contamination of recyclables and increase in illegal dumping if pay by weight is introduced," said Denis.” To see if Myers Recycling is covering your area or to sign up, call the office on 066-9793719, visit their website www.myersrecycling.ie, email info@myersrecycling.ie, or call into its office in Unit B6, 4 Park Business Centre, Farranfore.

Aidan’s fancy footwork set to impress on Dancing with the Stars KERRY footballer Aidan O’Mahony will be exchanging his football boots for a pair of dancing shoes yet again as he was unveiled as one of 11 celebrities to participate in RTÉ’s Dancing with the Stars. Aidan, whose nifty footwork has long dazzled on the pitch, was a hit on the INEC stage recently when he took a bow as part of Strictly Come Dancing for the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. Now the 36-year-old Rathmore man will have to impress a judging panel and the voting public from Sunday, January 8, as he strives to add the glitterball trophy to his All-Ireland medal haul. “I'm looking forward to having a laugh and more importantly giving the public a laugh, I've never danced in my life which will be obvious to see on the live shows and I know switching from the green grass to the ballroom floor will not be an easy transition especially as I have two left pegs on me and not a step in the world!” he said. “Here's to a couple of weeks of absolute carnage on the dance floor!” The two-time All Star will be joining the likes of straight-talking Dr Eva Orsmond on the show, while sports commentator Des Cahill will also be waltzing his way onto television screens in January, as will reporter Teresa Mannion and comedian Des Bishop. The show, presented by Amanda Byram and Nicky Byrne, will air on RTÉ One for 12 weeks from 6.30pm on January 8.

‘Eileen’s door was always open’ WARM tributes flowed from throughout the community and across the globe at the final farewell to Eileen Cronin (née O'Sullivan) of Cronin’s Yard, Mealis, Beaufort, and formerly of Ballyledder, Beaufort, who passed away on Sunday. Eileen’s warmth and generosity were recalled at the Requiem Mass on Wednesday morning in St Mary’s Church, Beaufort, which was followed by burial in Churchtown Cemetery, Beaufort. Her friend, Cathal Walshe, a retired member of An Garda Siochána, described Eileen as “the queen of the Reeks”. “Her door was always open,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “Eileen was so sociable, warm and generous.” Eileen, who passed away at University Hospital Kerry on Sunday after a short illness, lived at Cronin’s Yard, in the Hag’s Glen, which was regarded by many as “the real headquarters” of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. Gifts carried to the altar at the funeral Mass included a radio, a Daniel O’Donnell CD and a copy of photographer Valerie O’Sullivan’s book The MacGillycuddy's Reeks in which Eileen and her legendary hospitably feature prominently. Members of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team provided a guard of honour at the removal from O’Shea’s Funeral Home on Tuesday. “Eileen was known not alone throughout Kerry but all over Ireland through the welcome she gave mountain climbers,” said Cathal. A phone call of sympathy from Daniel O’Donnell was played out over loudspeaker after the funeral, at Kate Kearney’s Cottage to mourners. Eileen is predeceased by her husband Joseph and baby Anne Marie. She is survived by her sons John and his wife Ester and Ger and his partner Sylvia, her grandchildren Katie and Setanta, sisters Theresa (Clifford) and Mary (Duffy), brothers John, Michael, Philip and Dermot, relatives and wide circle of friends.

Joanne O’Riordan and Peter Keane honour Legion’s young stars KILLARNEY LEGION’S successful under-14 and under-16 tams were presented with their awards by the club’s honorary life member Joanne O’Riordan and All-Ireland minor winning manager Peter Keane in the Killarney Avenue Hotel last Sunday. Joanne donned her Legion colours on recent trip to Russia and educated the locals on Gaelic football when they enquired as to what club she was affiliated to. The U14 boys were presented with their East Kerry League and Championship medals. They were also the highest-ranked Kerry team in the National Féile last June. The U16 boys reached the top four in the County League Division 1, and qualified for both the East Kerry League and Championship Division 1 finals. Having succumbed to a strong Kilgarvan-Tuosist side in the league final they bounced back in great style to put in their best performance, defeating Cordal/Scartaglin in the championship final. Peter Keane also presented Cian Gammell with a memento in recognition of his year with the Kerry minors.

Christy praised as ‘fantastic ambassador’ for Killarney WELL-WISHERS have been swift to congratulate Christy Sheehan who has called time on his career at The Laurels Pub. Christy has worked at the landmark Market Cross business for several decades and was this week described as “a fantastic ambassador for The Laurels, for Killarney and indeed for all of Kerry” by Kate O’Leary of The Laurels. Christy “He always had a charming Sheehan. welcome for visitors to The Laurels and was always ready to share his time and knowledge of the town and county,” added Ms O’Leary, outgoing Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president. “He was well liked and well loved by many; he is the end of an era, an institution in his own right. There is hardly a return visitor to The Laurels that doesn't remember Christy or that Christy does not remember – usually even by name. Customer service was second nature to him.” Kate noted that one of Christy’s most famous remarks always raises a smile. “When asked the question, ‘What is a good whiskey?’ he would always reply, ‘The one someone else pays for!’” she said.

Ireland’s first ‘talkie’ delights movie buffs

Members of the Cooper family at the screening of the new digitised version of The Dawn at Cinema Killarney. From left are Katherine Cooper, Tommy Cooper, Michelle Cooper Galvin, Diarmuid Galvin and Therese Cooper.

A NEW chapter in Irish movie history opened at Cinema Killarney last Friday as an iconic film was given a whole new lease of life. The classic movie The Dawn, which was written and directed by Killarney man Tom Cooper in 1936, is newly restored thanks to a series of workshops and masterclasses by top international filmmakers. Mr Cooper’s great-grandson Diarmuid Galvin was co-creator with Brian Nolan of this initiative, which was run by the National Digital Skills Centre at Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) centre in Tralee. The Dawn was the first talkie made in Ireland. Mr Cooper used Killarney talent, from technicians to local actors, family and friends, to shoot a story loosely based on the War of Independence and of course featuring the dazzling beauty of Killarney’s mountains and lakes. For some years now, the original film has been held in a specially controlled environment in the British Film Institute in order to preserve the delicate film substance from deterioration. Moviegoers were delighted to see it restored to its former glory at Cinema Killarney, owned by Mr Cooper’s grandson Tom Cooper.

Santa taking part in the Christmas in Killarney Magic parade.

Magic in the air for Christmas in Killarney parades A STROLL through the streets of Killarney last Saturday brought Christmas fans of all ages into a winter wonderland. The third of the 2016 Christmas in Killarney Magic Parades ensured the town was filled with music, colour and a whopping 11 floats. The Magic parades always offer a top-class night out for all the family, and the first of these, on November 25, featured the children’s parade as well featuring Santa and his elves. Santa Claus is joined by his friends including Minnie and Mickey Mouse as well as Frozen stars Anna, Elsa and Olaf. The next parade takes place this Saturday, December 17, at 6pm, along the same route which takes in New Street on to Beech Road, Mission Road, then Main Street and back down New Street. “Christmas in Killarney is pleased to announce that 2016 will see the return of the New Year’s Eve parade on December 31, at 6pm,” said a spokesperson. “When speaking to Santa he informed the Christmas in Killarney committee that there is still time to make the nice list if you are on your best behaviour for December and to make sure you post your letters in plenty of time.” For further information on the Christmas in Killarney events log onto www.christmasinkillarney.com

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

MATTHEW 11:2-11: In response to the question of John, Jesus let his actions speak for him. Some people show by the way they live what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Who has given you such an example? Perhaps there have been times when you have done the same for others. John made a journey of faith from an incomplete knowledge of Jesus to a deeper understanding of who he was. Recall similar steps in your journey of faith. Faith is not primarily about answering abstract theological questions but about living the gospel. What in your life has helped you to get that sense of perspective? John marked the end of an era, Jesus the beginning of a new one. In our lives, how do we honour the past and yet be free to move on into a new era?

MUSINGS

John Byrne OSA, Veritas

JOHN, who was in prison … (Mt 11:2): There is much waiting time in prison. Waiting for sentence, for release, waiting with patience to discover one’s fate. This is where John the Baptist finds himself after confronting Herod. John had prophesised revolutionary change but couldn’t see it in Jesus. Therefore, the question: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus knew his cousin had a depth of spirituality to sustain him and his response is simple but effective: “Go back and report to John what you hear and see.” We’ve seen it too in others who were confined. St Paul, Nelson Mandela and Viktor Frankl never lost hope. They were not self-preoccupied in waiting but focused on their mission of establishing God’s kingdom, ending apartheid or not allowing evil to win the day. "He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how" (Nietzsche). Advent is our time for developing a spirituality that teaches patience; to wait with patience and hope despite the darkness of our time. In the depths of winter we learn to wait for the light. And the light will come just as the days begin to lengthen. We must wait. Fr Iomar Daniels, Veritas

‘PLEASE CARRY AN ORGAN DONOR CARD’

Give someone the bet gift possible this festive season KILLARNEY man Denis Breen is highlighting the work of the Irish Kidney Association and in the lead-up to the season of goodwill and is urging the public to carry an Organ Donor Card. Denis, from Hazelwood Drive, is keen to stress how the cards play a vital role in saving lives and how the Irish Kidney Association-produced cards are widely available. Organ donation has resulted in over 6000 transplant operations in Ireland alone. Denis Denis, who helps care for Breen. his dad, Denis Senior, who is awaiting a kidney transplant, said: “I am appealing to people to be aware that carrying an Organ Donor Card is the best gift you can give for Christmas and indeed the New Year. “My dad is on dialysis three days a week for four hours and has been on a waiting list for two years. He has been getting dialysis for the past three years. He finds dialysis tough and I find it hard to see him going through it.” Denis is keen to raise funds to help this cause. “I am willing to raise funds to help this cause and find a donor match suitable for my dad. I feel organ donation is a great gift to get. I would love to see my dad freed from dialysis,” said Denis. “Donor cards are widely available in doctor’s surgeries and pharmacies so please think about carrying one as it can save a life.” Denis can be contacted on 087-6785138.

Encore for cast and crew of Patrick to at civic reception this evening

ONE of the theatrical success stories of the year in Kerry, standing ovations greeted every staging of the top-class production Patrick, which I was privileged to see at the INEC when it returned to the venue on October 27. The mesmerising play, by local journalist and author Aidan O’Connor, visibly moved an audience that spanned several generations and elicited tears and laughter as the talented cast por-

trayed the life and times of Rathmore man Patrick O’Connor. This is a production that brings a chapter of history to life an incomparable fashion and recently the cast and crew were back for something of an encore as a civic reception will be held for the team behind Patrick, at The Malton Hotel. The musical drama tells the poignant story of the final months of the life

His Kerry fans were delighted when it was announced he would be taking centre stage in the INEC Killarney on Febru- Gav in James. ary 18, 2017. The Provocateur

HOME & AWAY

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

THE PRICE OF THE PEACE PROCESS DISMAY AS ELF MOVIE NOT ON TELEVISION THIS CHRISTMAS WELL, it takes a lot to ruin Christmas, but someone somewhere sure had a good try this year. Most Christmas fans will have felt rising panic on flicking through our (already well-thumbed) copies of the RTÉ Christmas Guide to discover key festive movie Elf is nowhere to be found on television this season. The beloved Will Ferrell classic is not being broadcast on free-to-air TVeither. Back in 2014, a host of Christmas movies, including Elf, weren’t available on freeto-air television after Sky acquired the exclusive broadcasting rights. And this week many people faced frustration as they scrambled across the channels and television listings looking for their annual festive fix. So why are television viewers fated to be without their Buddy this Christmas? Last year, Elf was a key part of Sky’s offering, available on its special Sky Christmas channel and on demand. This year, Sky Cinema informed customers on Twitter that it failed to secure the broadcasting rights to Elf. It seems that despite demand, Elf is not available on Netflix, and you can only rent or buy the film on Amazon. It’s available to rent or buy on iTunes and Google Play, but not on Sky Cinema’s on demand service. Another good plan (successfully executed by several friends this week) is to go retro (relatively!) and pick up a copy of the DVD in a local retailer and sit back and enjoy! Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Let us know your views at

Killarney Advertiser 16.12.16

AS WE gather at Christmas we reflect on the changes of the past year, the loved ones gone forever, the empty chair a reminder of how things used to be. We wear those memories like garlands, proud to have known those who went before us and happy to have been part of their lives. Through the mists of memories they come back to us and we remember them in the form of a smile or a memory of how things used to be. Mostly, we have fond memories, voices from the past whose sound dies in the wind but can always be recalled in a pleasant and reflective time. For others, these memories are like shackles, heavy crosses to bear, a result of the torturous path to peace in Northern Ireland which resulted

in their loved ones being denied justice for the sake of peace. Many of the victims of the violence paid the price of war and now they’re paying the price of peace, denied justice, their stories unfinished business. For the sake of peace, crimes were forgotten, criminals forgiven, investigations suspended, sentences reduced, prisoners freed, letters of comfort issued and the innocent left unavenged. It is difficult for people to live in the present when events of the past are left unfinished. That is why the Stack family will never find their father’s murderer. That is why the McConville family suffer daily. The innocent, the just, those who mourn their loss and long for justice are the victims of the peace process. We will never know the full price paid.

University Hospital Kerry’s car parking policy praised A CANCER charity has called on all hospitals to adopt University Hospital Kerry’s parking policy. The hospital has been congratulated by the Irish Cancer Society for its car parking scheme for cancer patients. Unlike most of the hospitals around the country, University Hospital Kerry allows cancer patients going through treatment to park free of charge. The hospital is highlighted in the Irish Cancer Society’s ‘Park the Charges’ report as being a leader in good-practice for its car parking policy for cancer patients. In other hospitals, cancer patients could be paying up to €63 a week in car parking charges. The Irish Cancer Society’s report highlights the financial burden of car parking on patients and their families. The charity says that the HSE needs to issue guidelines to hospitals so that all people

undergoing cancer treatment receive free car parking. One cancer patient told the Irish Cancer Society that his family had spent €1,200 on car parking charges while he was in hospital. Donal Buggy, Head of Services and Advocacy at the Irish Cancer Society, said: “People undergoing treatment are facing real hardship in having to deal with additional costs and large drops in income, and high car parking charges only add to this. We have proposed a set of guidelines for hospitals to the HSE, that, if put in place, would make a big difference to cancer patients.” The Irish Cancer Society currently runs a Volunteer Driver Service that provides transport for cancer patients to and from their hospital chemotherapy treatments, which currently operates at 21 different hospitals nationwide, including University Hospital Kerry.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD LIFE CAN BE STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL Figures vary, but many scientists estimate that there are in the region of five million different species alive on our planet today, says Trevor O’Donoghue LIFE is everywhere. Evolution has seen to that. Wherever there is a living to be made, some species or other has adapted to fill this niche and thrive. Life can be strange and beautiful, full of wonderful adaptations and ornamentations. Humans have developed an intricate relationship with life, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear to the fuel we use. Evolution has provided life on this planet with a myriad of adaptations and tools to help it survive. Humans, driven by curiosity, are forever seeking ways to make our lives easier, safer and more comfortable have taken inspiration from the natural world. Take for example Velcro, the mechanical based fastening device that has found numerous uses in our daily lives.

Velcro’s Swiss inventor went for a walk in the woods and came out covered sticky, hard to remove seeds, and so the hook and loop mechanism of Velcro was born. Of course, the lengthy lives we enjoy today are in part due to a better understanding of food and diet. However, it is perhaps a combination of the humble antibiotic and vaccinations that have helped eradicate life-threatening diseases

and allowed us to enjoy longer, healthier lives. The simple blue green mould that grows on oranges has led to the development of penicillin, one of the first effective antibiotics. Likewise, Edward Jenner’s observations that milkmaids who had cowpox didn’t develop smallpox subsequently led to the development the smallpox vaccination and ultimately the eradication of the smallpox disease in 1979. By that stage many millions had died from it, including hundreds

of millions in the 20th century alone. Of all the species that ever lived on our planet, approximately only 1% are alive today. The other 99% have become extinct. Imagine the secrets that have gone with them. •Feeling curious about the world around you? Email any science-related question you might have to Trevor at ftrevorodonoghue@gmail.com

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

INVASIVE SPECIES ACTION PLAN NEEDED FOR KERRY AND CORK

TIME TO CALL IN THE ARMY KILLARNEY NATIONAL PARK is on the brink of ecocide. An ecological disaster is taking place in the first national park to be established in the State. One of the world’s oldest oak forests is slowly dying. The rhododendron infestation and increased deer population across the region has not been adequately tackled. The infestation is now out of control. It is annihilating native flora and preventing new native species of oak, from growing. Nothing short of calling in the Army to break the back of the problem will suffice. At the COP 13 UN Biodiversity Conference that took place in Cancun, Mexico, until December 17, more than 190 countries attending have been requested to ramp up actions to protect biological diversity. A number of countries have adopted the Cancun Declaration. The Declaration represents an unprecedented recognition from the international community that biodiversity

protection must involve different governmental and economic sectors and not just the environmental ministries. On Friday last, countries were asked to put actions in place without delay to protect our pollinators. Bees are major pollinators and Rhododendron is of particular threat to bees according to a report published by Botanists from Trinity College Dublin’s (TCD) School of Natural Sciences entitled, “Toxic Tastes – Ireland’s Bees and NonNative Rhododendron Nectar”, which was published in November 2015. Also, according to the Forest Service Rhododendron is also linked to “Sudden Oak Death”. Today we are seeing mass damage and destruction to the environment and people’s lives on a scale that has never been seen before in history. This sort of destruction is seriously impacting the natural world-the source of life. Our planetary boundaries

(i.e., safe operating space for humanity) on a number of fronts, for example biological diversity, have already been crossed. Other planetary boundaries includes “land use”, “fresh water use” and “biogeochemical flows”. The more we cross our planetary boundaries the greater the threat to our survival by making Earth less inhabitable. Just Forests is now calling on the Government to put the necessary financial and legal instruments in place to make the proper removal of rhododendron from every garden, hedge row, field, forest and woodland in this area compulsory as a matter of urgency. We are calling for an Invasive Species Action Plan For Kerry & Cork Region. The objectives of the plan is to eradicate rhododendron and control the spread of existing invasive alien species (IAS) and to prevent any new IAS from becoming established in the Kerry/ Cork region. The real value of biodiversity to tourism, agriculture, fisheries and the forestry sectors in Ireland is

priceless and beyond question. It is now time to act and give the next generation the security of a functioning and healthy natural world before it’s too late. It is not unusual for small States around the world to deploy their armies to act in the Public Interest – now is such a time for Ireland. Just Forests will commence an on-line public campaign soon to get people across the world to email the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence, Enda Kenny, to deploy the defence forces immediately to eradicate the rhododendron problem for once and for all. Then the maintenance work of voluntary bodies such as Killarney Mountain Meitheal (of which Just Forests is a member) will be much more successful and enjoyable. See our campaign on http:// savekillarneynationalpark.com Tom Roche, Just Forests, Dromickbane, Muckross, Killarney

Garden Magic Unleash your creativity this festive season

Debby Looney gives an insight into decorating your home for Christmas

ONE of my great pleasures in the run-up to Christmas each year is making wreaths, garlands and table arrangements. It is so rewarding to go out and cut your own pieces of ornamental greenery, especially unusual pieces, which are always points of interest. Cryptomerias are a type of conifer which come in many shapes, from a small spiralling one, (c. Spiralis), to a huge tree with fused branches. Other evergreens worth planting include Choisya, Pieris and Viburnum varieties. Get the kids involved in making table arrangements, use festive cups, or nightlight holders to make small tablepieces which will look great either in a straight line interspersed with candles, or in a central cluster. A small piece of floral foam can go a long way! Use floral foam wreaths to make beautiful fresh arrangements and place a few candles on a saucer in the middle

– coming closer to Christmas you can add some fresh cut flowers to your own greenery. Indoor plants will be feeling the heat at the moment, so it is a good idea to cluster them on trays filled with gravel. Pour some water into the tray to just below the pots. Your plants will thank you for the humidity, while the heating is on. In the vegetable garden, if there is a nice day, consider creating a patch for growing cranberries and blueberries. It’s a simple thing to do, dig a trench, or a round hole, line with plastic into which you pierce a few holes, and fill with ericaceous compost and peat. Both cranberries and blueberries love damp, acidic peaty ground, and this is an ideal way to keep them happy. Plant some heathers in with them to encourage bees for pollination, and next year you will be using homegrown cranberries for the Christmas dinner!

Wheels set in motion for Massey Ferguson tractor project IT WILL be a busy winter for the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club with the purchase of a very tired Massey Ferguson 135 tractor which the club plans on restoring to its former glory. It is envisaged to have the project completed by summer 2017. The newly restored tractor will then be raffled off in the summer and the chosen charities from the South Kerry Ploughing Championships & Harvest Show which takes place on Sunday, September 3, 2017, will benefit from the proceeds. The club urges anyone who would like to get involved to get in touch and would appreciate in particular sponsorship and any help with electrical, sandblasting and painting. “We are calling on anyone who would like to get involved and help out with this project to get in touch and all help will be greatly appreciated,” said club chairman Tom Leslie. “It will also be an enjoyable social event with a cup of tea and chat afterwards.” Anyone interested in getting involved can contact Tom Leslie, Chairman of Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club directly on 087-2383809. The club would also like to say a huge thank you to Mike Moriarty of Moriarty’s Centra and Central Car Sales, Farranfore, who very generously purchased the tractor in its current condition for the club and for his continued support and also special thanks to Donal Kissane of DKB Machinery Ltd of Kilgobnet, Beaufort, Killarney, who is also supporting the project. Those involved in the project will meet every Wednesday evening from 8pm-10pm at Killarney Men’s Shed and the club would like to say a special thank you to Kerry Mental Health and to Killarney Men’s Shed for the generous use of their facilities. Hoteliers take stock after landmark year MEMBERS of a host of tourism organisations converged on Killarney recently for a major forum and a number of other landmark events in the industry were celebrated also. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Skål Republic of Ireland and the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation joined forces to create “Let’s Talk Tourism – The National Tourism Forum”. Chaired by RTÉ’s Miriam O’Callaghan, it unfolded in the five-star Muckross Park Hotel. Also during the weekend, Skål Republic of Ireland president Sean O’Driscoll presents John Concannon with the Skål Leader in Tourism Award for his work on the 1916 Commemoration Project throughout Ireland at the organisation’s annual dinner in The Brehon Hotel. Skål is a professional organisation of tourism leaders around the world. A business networking dinner in The Brehon featured former Kerry footballers Daragh, Tomas and Marc O Se as after-dinner speakers. The following night, the Kerry president of the Irish Hotels Federation Terence Mulcahy hosted the annual Kerry IHF Christmas ball at Muckross Park Hotel.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

Time passes by, life goes on It’s not the same now you are gone, But we think about you every day, And in our hearts you’ll always stay.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Mary’s 1st Anniversary Mass will be Celebrated on Sunday 18th December at 11.30am in St. Gertrude’s Church Firies

Sadly missed by your Godparents Catherine Howe and Phil Kelleher and their families.

60TH BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE

6TH ANNIVERSARY WHELAN

In loving memory of Noreen Whelan late of Kilcummin Killarney who died on the 14th December 2010.

Along the road of suffering, You found a little lane, That took you up to heaven, And ended all your pain. You may be out of sight, We may be worlds apart, But you are always in our prayers, And forever in our hearts.

We think of you in Silence We often speak your name But all we have are memories And your picture in a frame Your resting place we visit Flowers we put with care But no one knows the heartache As we turn and leave you there.

God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So He put His arms around you, And whispered “Come to me” With tearful eyes we watched you, As you slowly slipped away, And though we loved you dearly, We couldn’t make you stay. Your golden heart stopped beating, Your tired eyes put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

Never a day goes by that you’re not in our heart and soul.

Always loved and remembered by your daughter Kathleen, Pat & Families

Rugby news & views THE pre-Christmas run of Heineken Cup or Champion Cup as they like to call it these days, began last Saturday with all four provinces in action. Leinster took on Currow native and ex-Munster man JJ Hanrahan’s team Northampton at Franklin Gardens and won convincingly, as did Ulster who took on Clermont at the Kingspan. The wheels came off Connacht’s run yesterday as they lost to Wasps, no doubt the shock news about Pat Lam’s imminent departure not helping matters in the West. The match of the weekend was in Thomond Park however, as Munster took on Leicester Tigers and what a match it was! As newspaper headlines go, that of ‘Munster tame tigers at last’ is bang on the money. The pressure was

probably on Munster to continue the good run of results into the Champions Cup, but you wouldn’t think it by looking at the players on the pitch. A dominant display by the Munster men with tries from Jaco Taute and Simon Zebo say the home side romp home to a 38-0 win over historic rivals Leicester Tigers. This is the 6th win in a row for Munster and a return fixture away at Welford Road awaits next Saturday. Let’s hope Munster can kick on and continue the good run! Last Saturday morning, we brought 9 girls from Killarney RFC to Listowel for their #giveitatry event, an event set up to help develop girls rugby across West Munster. It is great to see so many girls playing rugby, considering we had only 1 last year! Girls’ rug-

by is a fantastic way for girls to have fun, meet new friends and develop the skills of rugby. With Munster Ladies and Ireland Ladies teams being dominant in their respective fields, the future is bright for any girl who wants to play rugby. A great morning was had by all as we had a training session and a match, helped by our Ladies Coach Denise Treacy. Well done to the girls who travelled and the parents for their huge support as always. Don’t forget we will host our Minis Christmas Party at the Killarney Avenue hotel this Sunday from 1pm and all minis, parents and families are welcome to come along and meet Santa and have fun. See ye then, Liam.

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

TAKING A BOW AT MUNSTER GAA AWARDS Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the week in sport CORK ace forward Charlie McCarthy and Limerick football star John Quane are the latest Munster legends to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The two greats received their awards at the Munster GAA Awards Gala Dinner on Saturday, in the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork. This year’s Hurling Hall of Fame goes to Charlie McCarthy of St. Finbarr’s and Cork who has given distinguished service as a player and coach both at club and inter-county level. His honours as an inter-county player include seven All-Ireland medals and twelve Munster medals between minor, under 21 and senior grades along with four National Hurling League medals The Football Hall of Fame award goes to John Quane of Galtee Gaels and Limerick who was an ever-present member of the Limerick Senior Football teams for 14 years from 1991 to 2005. The inspirational midfielder played in the 1991 Munster Senior Football Final against Kerry in Killarney in his first year on the senior team. He was a cornerstone of the teams that came so near to winning the Munster Finals of 2003 and 2004. His heroic performances merited an All Star nomination in 2002. Other 2016 award winners also announced are Micheál Mac Conmara of

An Clár who receives the Special Service Award for his long and distinguished service to Scór; Cork’s Michael Hurley for Under 21 Football, Clare’s David Conroy of Clare for Intermediate Hurling and Jamie Lee of Limerick for Junior Football. Tipperary hurler, John McGrath, and Limerick Camogie player, Niamh Mulcahy, have been announced as the winners of the Hurler of the Year and Camogie Player of the Year respectively in the 2016 Munster GAA Awards. The Club of the Year Award goes to Clare with Ballyea being honoured having won their first Clare and Munster senior hurling championships this year. The Handball Award goes to Aishling O’Keeffe, a member of famed Ballydesmond GAA Handball Club in Cork. Other 2016 award winners announced were Munster and All-Ireland minor medallists Jake Morris of Tipperary for minor hurling and David Clifford of Kerry for minor football. SLIABH LUACHRA JOURNAL The 1916 centenary commemorations are well catered for in Volume 1, number 17 of the souvenir edition of the Sliabh Luachra. There are several interesting articles of a sporting nature. Donal Hickey penned a tribute to the late

Den Joe Crowley, who won All Irelands with Kerry in 1969 and again in 1970. No wonder a huge crowd turned out in Rathmore station to welcome home their hero, the first Rathmore man to win a senior All Ireland medal. “He was the undisputed hero and the local ’69 celebrations have become part of the folk memory. He is probably best remembered as the score of that spectacular goal in the 1970 All Ireland final versus Meath. He picked up a pass from John O’Keeffe and then “ took off like a rocket and soloed through the Meath defence before unleashing a humdinger with his right foot for a smashing goal, four minutes from the end.” In the 1969 final he gave a man-of-the match display in that victory over Offaly. In his article John Kelly the well-known GAA scribe and community carer examines the parish rule as it developed in controversy in the area. Con Houlihan defined the Sliabh Luachra more or less as “a state of mind” rather than a physical area and John Kelly goes along with that. One of the first clubs to be affiliated to the GAA at that time in 1988 they had players from all over the region and that was not unusual at that time. However when other areas within the broad Rathmore territory formed new clubs the strength of Rathmore was diminished somewhat. The district boards were set up in 1925 and the Headford club was formed in 30s. This was a very strong club. Household names such as Paddy

Healy were members of this club. He was the grandfather of Pat O Shea who managed Dr Crokes to the Munster Club title just a few weeks ago.” In the mid 1940s another club was formed in the Barraduff area, named Dr Dineen’s”. This was managed by the great Johnny Mullane. In 1961 a decision was made to found the Gneeveguilla club. Having watched all club players in this Sliabh Luachra for over 60 years John Kelly picks three teams from the area to represent the different decades. No better man than Dan Dwyer to recall the footballers from the Siabh Luachra and Duhallow areas who played in Corn Uí Mhuirí from 1962 to 1965. Dan was a member of the 1963 Sem team which lost out narrowly to St Mel’s of Longford in the All Ireland colleges final (The Hogan Cup). Micheál O’Donoghue penned a very interesting article on John Mullane, the flamboyant character who was born in Cornhill. He was “ a man before his time according to Micheál. DR CROKES 1916 CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS As part of its 1916 centenary celebrations Dr Crokes joined with the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee on Saturday last unveiling a plaque at the New Cemetery commemorating Dick Fitzgerald, one of its most famous sons. He died in 1930. Canon Tom Looney and Fr Paddy O’Donoghue blessed the plaque.

FLASHBACK

Twenty years ago: December 14, 1996 TWENTY years ago this week on Saturday, December 14, 1996, a capacity crowd filled the Presentation Gym, Killarney for a thrilling Sprite National Cup quarter final between Kerry Spring St Paul's and reigning champions Ballina. The build-up to this game wasn't ideal for the Killarney side with top American player Nick Browning going down with glandular fever days before the big game. Former Killarney favourite Terry Smith was drafted in as a replacement a day before the match. It was the biggest game ever hosted by the St. Paul's club in the Pres Gym and cheered on by an enthusiastic home following, Kerry Spring pro-

duced the performance of the season to topple the cup holders on a 102-91 scoreline. Despite the best efforts of the legendary Liam McHale and teammates, Ballina trailed 49-42 at half time and Kerry Spring maintained their dominance in the second half with four players hitting big double figures. Terry Smith was jumping out of the gym with 30 points followed by the ever-reliable Corey Jackson on 26 points. Cormac O'Donoghue came back from a short retirement for this game and had the game of his life hitting 22 points while Vince Daly was equally impressive with 19 points.

RESULTS DENNY PREMIER A Killarney Athletic 3-3 Fenit Samphires A draw that felt like a loss for our senior A team yesterday in Woodlawn. We raced out of the blocks and were 3 up within 25 mins of start with goals from Paudie Clifford, William Courtney and Eamon lavin. Cruising to half time a loss of concentration allowed Fenit pull 1 back just before the break. We never got into our groove in 2nd half and Fenit dug in to pull back the 2 goal deficit. Youths Killarney Athletic 1-3 Killarney Celtic. A game where Athletic threw it away. Celtic scored against the run of play in the first half before a Ruairi O Keeffe header levelled matters. Athletic had the majority of the play but couldn’t capitalise against the 10 men of Celtic who had Cian Casey sent off. In the final moments , Celtic scored twice to take all 3 points. U14 LEAGUE Killarney Athletic 3 Park 2 The lads started brilliantly with Aaron O’Sullivan looping a header over the keeper into the top corner for the lead inside the first minute. Playing one & two touch football Athletic created lots of chances in the first half, the second coming from top scorer O’Sullivan again, after a brilliant set up by Mulvanney down the right. Park got one back as the defence was caught napping by a long ball, but 5 minutes before halftime Jason Lee got on the end of a through ball&expertly guided it past the on rushing keeper to make it 3-1. Athletic had Darragh Doolan to thank for the halftime lead after an amazing double save from a corner. Into the second half, Athletic defended brilliantly with Keelan Foley making another super save from a corner. Park got another one back midway through the second half but a huge defensive performance by Pierce, Komosa & O’Brien meant Athletic held out for their second win of the season. St Paul’s courts success with primary school blitz By Eamonn Keogh

ST PAUL'S BASKETBALL CLUB held its inaugural three-by-three primary school blitz recently at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. It attracted a lot of interest and it involved a total of 39 boys and girls teams taking part from the schools of Fossa, Presentation Monastery, Holy Cross Mercy, Lissivigeen, St Oliver's Ballycasheen, Loreto, Glenflesk, Barraduff, Anabla and Loughquittane. With four courts in action the 200-plus children that took part represented their schools with some great skills in basketball. The transition-year students from the St Brigid's Killarney helped out in a big way from officiating at the matches and keeping track of the scores and managing the clocks. Special thanks also St Paul’s development coach Muharem Muki Vugdalic for helping out with coaching the refs and helping manage to manage the courts and also to St Paul's senior men’s player Archie who was there to ref the finals along with Kate Donellan.

A special thanks also to the Kennedy Family from Lahard, Beaufort, who donated the cups for the finals in memory of the late Steve Kennedy who was chairman of St Paul's during the mid-1990s. The plate trophy was dedicated to the late Sean Coleman, a founding St Paul's member and for-

mer chairman and player, who was instrumental in establishing the juvenile town league for local schools in St. Mary’s Parish Hall in the late 1980s and 1990s. After a total of 69 matches the winners were decided. Both Fossa National School teams qualified for the boys cup final with Fossa 2 defeating Fossa 1. The winning team received trophies and the Steve Kennedy Memorial Cup for their school with the runners-up receiving medals. In the Sean Coleman Memorial boys Plate Final Fossa 4 defeated Loreto 3 after a keenly contested final. In the girls Cup Final Holy Cross Mercy emerged victorious over Loreto. In the girls Plate Final Fossa edged out Barraduff. A special word of thanks to Daniel and staff at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre for the hall and facilities. Great credit is due to organisers Padraig Weldon, Elizabeth Switzer, Amanda O’Brien, Kate Donnellan and Trish O’Donoghue who helped ensure a huge success all round. Plans are already in place to host further tournaments. Sincere thanks to the teachers who came to coach and supervise.

EAST KERRY U21 CHAMPIONSHIP A SEMI FINAL Dr Crokes 2-11 Rathmore 1-06 On Sunday last, the East Kerry Under 21 A Championship reached the Final stage when Dr Crokes came out on top against Rathmore in the semi final. Played in Dr Crokes club grounds, the first half was a close affair but Dr Crokes pulled away in the second half and progressed to the final against neighbours Spa with a convincing display. It was tit for tat in the first ten minutes. Micheál Burns opening the scoring with a point from play and Brian Friel quickly replied. The sides traded points, David Shaw, Dr Crokes and Shane Ryan for the visitors – 2 points a piece after ten minutes. Dr Crokes dominated the next 5 minutes, and a brace of points from the boots of David Shaw and Jordan Kiely, was followed by a well worked goal when Jordan Kiely turned over the ball and made no mistake rattling the Rathmore net. Dr Crokes led 1-4 to 0-2 going into the second quarter. Both sides created goal chances. A Dr Crokes rasper just skimmed wide while Rathmore hit the upright and the rebound came out and was cleared. Dr Crokes pressed for goal only to have the ball cross the goal mouth and trail just wide. The sides traded points (Jordan Kiely pointed free and Shane Ryan from play for the visitors) 1-5 to 0-3 on the 26th minute. Rathmore then had the better of the play. The visitors won the kick out passed to Shane Ryan, who rounded the Dr Crokes defence and gave the goal keeper no chance netting the ball – 1-5 to 1-3. A Tommy Sheehan point from play was followed immediately with a Mark Ryan point and the sides were level as the half time whistle approached. A nice David Shaw point gave Dr Crokes the lead by the minimum at the break: Dr Crokes 1-6 Rathmore 1-5. On resumption, Rathmore leveled the game with a Shane Ryan pointed free on the 35th minute but a well worked Jordan Kiely goal on the 37th minute gave Dr Crokes a lead they did not relinquish. Rathmore pressed forward and were denied a goal with a great save by the Dr Crokes goal keeper, Johnny O’Leary on the 39th minute. In the remainder of the half, Dr Crokes turned defence into attack and notched up a further 5 points without reply to progress to the final on a full
