Editor’s View Candidates Hit The Campaign Trails AND they’re off. Candidates have lost no time in sweeping into action on their general election campaigns after President Michael D Higgins dissolved the 31st Dáil on Wednesday and Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced February 26 as polling day. So what will the electorate in the greater Killarney area and Kerry have to say when they meet the candidates on their doorsteps? Employment will definitely be a hot topic. Many would like to see more, well-paying jobs in the Killarney area, as well as more business op-

portunities and supports for tourism as well as increased industry and accessibility for Killarney and Kerry. Housing is another key concern. Will prospective TDs be addressing the need for new, energy-efficient and affordable housing in the Killarney area and its environs? Taxes will also no doubt energise doorstep debate. We have experienced increased direct and stealth taxes over the last 10 years but services and infrastructure have not advanced accordingly. In addition, many voters will speak

of the slow rollout of high-speed broadband and the need for local electric car-charging points. The state of our roads is another talking point among the electorate. Road users pay huge car tax annually – are these monies being spent effectively? Road safety concerns as well as flooding threats and damage will also no doubt top the agenda. •See the first of our two-part election special this week, on pages 32 and 33

FORGET about the West End, Killarney’s homegrown thespians have always known how to stage a mesmerising drama right on our doorstep. In what is excellent news for theatregoers, Dóchas Drama Group returns to the Killarney Avenue Hotel on February 17, 18 and 19, presenting three one-act plays, at 8pm nightly. “Relationships, love lost and found, loyalty and deceit – all human life is there!” said Mary Murphy of Dóchas Drama Group. “We are presenting three plays, three authors from three different countries, from three different periods all with themes and characters with whom we can all identify and recognise.” The Bear by Anton Chekhov is a hilarious comedy. “We meet the grieving widow Elena (played by Siobhan McAuliffe), the opinionated, egotistical Gregory (played by Hugh Jordan) and the faithful manservant, Luka (played by Don Rohan) who is confused by the behaviour of both!” said Mary. In Last Post by Jean McConnell, Felicity (played by Mabel Counihan) is amazed when she receives a letter she was not expecting. “A visit from the young, attractive Mary O’Reilly (played by Liz Sherry) brings news which challenges her patience and dignity. Who has the last laugh?” added Mary. Ribbons is a play by a promising young Irish playwright, Elaine Murphy, which was produced at the Abbey Theatre in 2013 and received much praise. In it, we meet Glenda (played by Patricia McSherry) who has invited Lewis (played by Daniel McCarthy) to her apartment in the hope of strengthening their relationship. “Both have stories to tell which are revealed over a cup of tea!” said Mary. Dóchas members will also stage the production at the Carnegie Arts Centre in Kenmare on Saturday, February 20.

Michael Healy-Rae and Truly Diverse get in harmony THE sounds of Kerry and Killarney band Truly Diverse flooded the airwaves from Wednesday as Kerry TD Michael HealyRae started his campaign off by releasing a song encouraging voters to support him. The catchy number, written and performed by Truly Diverse, advises people to "vote him one or vote him two, vote him any way". "They did a great job," said Deputy Healy-Rae of Truly Di-

Question My house was flooded and badly damaged. What help can I get? Answer The Department of Social Protection’s Humanitarian Assistance Scheme provides means-tested emergency financial help immediately following flooding. The Government has not set a limit on the amount that can be paid to an individual household under this scheme. The amount paid depends on how severe the damage is and your ability to meet these costs. The scheme covers: 1.Emergency income support payments. 2.Damage to your home and its essential contents, such as carpets, flooring, furniture and household appliances and bedding. 3.Structural damage may also be considered. The Department of Social Protection also provides exceptional and urgent needs payments which can help in the aftermath of a flood. If your home has been flooded and you are getting help from the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme, you can apply to have your 2016 Local Property Tax (LPT) payment deferred (even if you do not qualify for deferral under the normal criteria). Contact the LPT Helpline on 1890 200 255 to make the relevant arrangements. The Health Service Executive (HSE) has information on cleaning a home after flooding and dealing with the psychological effects of flooding. The Office of Public Works (OPW) has a website, flooding.ie, that gives information about what to do before, during and after a flood. There are two publications giving details of the help available: •Leaflet – Schemes Available For People Affected by Recent Flooding •Booklet – Government Assistance For People Affected by Flooding You can get the leaflets on the welfare.ie website or from your local Citizens Information Centre.

HOW MABS CAN HELP WITH MORTGAGE DEBT Struggling with mortgage debt is very stressful and it can be hard for people to know where to start. Ger O’Brien, mortgage advisor with Kerry Money Advice & Budgeting Service, reports on how to resolve this problem MORTGAGE debt has been in the news for a considerable time now with particular focus being on those who are in serious arrears and have not yet reached a resolution of their particular difficulty. While there are nearly 760,000 mortgages on private homes in the country, 110,000 mortgages are still in arrears and almost 38,000 are in arrears for more than two years. The Government, in its recent announcement of new measures in May 2015, is eager to alleviate the impact of debt on families across the country so that people can move forward with their lives. The new measures announced include a major reform of the insolvency framework, appeal to the courts for insolvency deals rejected by the banks and an expansion of the Mortgage to Rent Scheme to assist those whose mortgages are unsustainable. The Government also announced, as part of the new measures, the strengthening of the role of MABS to enhance its existing role of providing independent information and advice to borrowers in arrears. MABS has always assisted people in mortgage difficulty. In fact, almost 50% of clients now coming to MABS have a mortgage. We anticipate that the new strengthening of MABS will enhance its existing role and extend

it to provide a more complete and comprehensive service to clients in mortgage difficulty. Struggling with mortgage debt is very stressful and it can be hard for people to know where to start. In the MABS experience people go into denial when experiencing over-indebtedness. People in mortgage difficulty are no different and it seems that there is a considerable number who have not or are not engaging with their lender. While this reaction is understandable it is not a solution and can, and often does, result in the problem intensifying. Many households in mortgage difficulty who are not engaging with their lender are fearful and unsure of where to go to seek independent advice. Some MABS advisers, from their experience of being in court, are reporting that those who do attend a repossession hearing (and many do not), are intimidated by the process. Some courts, when adjourning repossession cases are now advising people to go to MABS. The Government’s new initiative places MABS as the gateway for those in mortgage arrears to commence addressing their mortgage and all the other debt issues they may have. MABS anticipates that it will be in a position to offer those distressed borrowers a fuller suite of supports in coming to a resolution of their mortgage difficulty with the clear objective of keeping families in the homes. As MABS is a free service, independent of the banks and other credit institutions, available nationwide, people should not have to face a court appearance or deal with the threat of losing their home without the independent advice and support available to them in MABS. MABS is a confidential service.

CASE STUDY

How Kerry MABS mortgage advice helped a client cope better with addressing mortgage debt OUR client John (not his real name) contacted Kerry MABS having received a letter from his bank suggesting that he look for support from us regarding arrears on his mortgage. We met John by appointment and we explained how Kerry MABS works and made sure he was comfortable with this before he told us about his situation. John is separated with one daughter aged 11, but he continues to live in the family home and his daughter stays with him two days per week. John works parttime. We explained the supports that are available to all people in mortgage arrears and the processes that have to be followed in trying to resolve mortgage arrears cases. We then contacted John’s bank enclosing a form of authorisation, signed by John, which allows us to act on his behalf. We stressed that John wished to co-operate with the bank in trying to agree to a monthly repayment on his mortgage that he could afford and keep up. We told the bank that John wished to submit an updated Standard Financial Statement (SFS for short) and we pro-

12

Killarney Advertiser 05.02.16

posed that the bank re-assess John’s case in light of the new information to be provided as we believed that a long-term affordable and sustainable solution was possible. After our second appointment with John, we wrote back to the Bank attaching the completed SFS, along with proof of income and bank statements for the last three-month period. The SFS showed repayment capacity of €400 per month. We proposed that the Bank agree to lengthen the term of the mortgage, add John’s current arrears of €13,000 back into the mortgage and accept repayments of €400 per month, subject to regular agreed review. At current rates this meant that the mortgage would be repaid in full in the year 2031. The bank agreed to the proposed monthly repayment and to adding the arrears back into the mortgage but would only extend the term to 2028 which is when John reached the age of 65. This meant that in 2028 (at current interest rate) the amount still outstanding on the mortgage would be €12,500. We explained this to John and

The MABS website www.mabs.ie and the MABS helpline on 0761 07 2000, provide information and guidance on all aspects of dealing with personal debt. Information on statutory debt resolution options can be found on the Insolvency Service of Ireland’s website www.isi.gov.ie The Money Advice and Budgeting service is particularly well placed to assist people in over indebted situations. MABS, as well as being a free service, is independent, confidential and non-judgemental.

also explained that because he had a variable interest rate mortgage that if his circumstances improved during the extended term that he could increase his monthly repayment or make lump sum reductions to his mortgage without incurring any penalties. Every payment in addition to agreed sum of €400 per month would reduce the projected €12,500 outstanding at age 65. Furthermore, to get a second opinion, we suggested that he meet with an independent financial advisor to be chosen by him from the panel of practising accountants available at www. keepingyourhome.ie and we explained that his Bank would p a y €250 t o wards t h e

cost of the appointment. Having considered his situation and taken the appropriate advice, John decided to accept the Bank’s restructure offer as proposed by Kerry MABS. He has the peace of mind of being able to continue living in his home, knowing that his mortgage is no longer in arrears as he is able to afford and keep up the new monthly payments as negotiated by Kerry MABS.

The Gleneagle Group on a winning streak THE celebrations continue at The Gleneagle Group this week, with The Brehon, The Gleneagle and The Maritime hotels all winning awards in the past few days. The Brehon was awarded Best Four Star Hotel at the 26th annual CIE Tours International Awards of Excellence at a special ceremony in Dublin Castle. The CIE award winners are chosen following an independent valuation of feedback surveys completed by CIE Tours International customers. The Brehon, along with sister hotels The Gleneagle and The Maritime, also cleaned up at the Irish Accommodation Services Awards where they each won a gold medal for their immaculate standards in housekeeping and accommodation services. “We have had a wonderful start to 2016, first being ranked in Trip Advisor’s Top Ten Irish Hotels and now winning the CIE Best Four Star and IASI Award,” said general manager Brian Bowler. “The team here is overjoyed and we look forward to further exceeding our guests expectations in the coming months.” Following the IASI Awards held in Hotel Westport at the weekend, executive accommodation manager for The Gleneagle Group Noreen O’Gorman said: “We are thrilled to have won three IASI gold medals. Our guests expect and deserve the highest standards of cleanliness and we work very hard every day to ensure that this is what they get. To be applauded for this is a fabulous bonus.” The Brehon was also runner-up in IASI Supreme Award in the Four Star category, narrowly losing out to The Hudson Bay Hotel.

Celebrating The Brehon's CIE award are Sharon O'Connor, Owen Zhong, Bell Suththip, Fiona Collins, Gretel O'Sullivan, Sharon Dineen, Sinead McCarthy, John Abbing, Martha Cyfert, Louise Fleming, Brian Bowler, general manager, Brehon Hotel, Patrick O'Donoghue, MD, Gleneagle Hotel Group. Aidan shines a light on Rathmore man’s fight for Irish freedom AS PART of the 1916 commemorations, numerous events are taking place around the county, marking Kerry’s close association and involvement with the events leading up to and during the Rising. Captain Patrick O’Connor was from Rathmore, a young Irish Volunteer and member of the IRB. Now, locals from all over Rathmore, Glenflesk, Killarney and East Kerry are coming together to remember Patrick O’Connor, by staging a musical drama on April 23 in Rathmore. Simply called Patrick, it is written and directed by journalist and writer Aidan O’Connor. Although relatively little is known about Patrick O’Connor, we do know that he left his native home in Rathmore to travel to Dublin on Good Friday, 1916, and having spent a week with Pearse and the Garrison inside the GPO, died in a blaze of machine gun fire around Moore Street on Friday, April 26, 1916. “For his mother, Mary, the Easter of 1916 marked a terrible time in her life. In the week leading up to Easter Sunday, she buried a son and her husband. A week later, the news eventually came that her other son, Patrick, had been taken from her too,” said Aidan. Under historical direction from Jer O’Donoghue, the added musical and dance talent of people like Joe Burkett, Derry Healy and the Clonkeen Youth

Choir, and experienced stage hands of Val Moynihan, the two-hour production shines the spotlight on the small East Kerry parish as Irish history changed forever. “Of all the Kerry people associated with the Rising, maybe least was known about Patrick O’Connor. But we know enough to tell his remarkable story and his fight for Irish freedom,” said Aidan. “His story is one that must be told. Writing this for stage is a deeply moving and proud journey. I think Patrick O’Connor will be proud too.”

The event, which has been organised by Tralee Boxing Club and sponsored by Lee Strand Protein+ Milk, will see Katie Taylor take-on former Olympian Queen Underwood of the USA in the headline bout of a 10-fight card. OUTRAGE AT GRISLY DISCOVERY OF SEVERED DEER HEADS THE discovery of the severed heads of six native female red deer and a six-monthold calf shocked the public earlier this week. The grim find was made in Killarney on Monday by a member of the public. Hitting out at the discovery, the Wild Deer Association of Ireland claimed it flies in the face of assurances given by Heritage Minister Heather Humphreys. It is reported that the Department said the culling “conformed with NPWS scientific oversight” and was conducted by trained wildlife staff. A statement from the Department also said the images that were taken in a restricted area were “designed to give a misleading impression to the public”. However, the Wild Deer Association of Ireland says Minister Humphreys had given assurances in the Dáil that “only old and infirm animals would be culled”. The association’s director, Damien Hannigan, said Monday’s discovery goes against such assurances. Red deer are a protected species and the animals roaming the Killarney National Park are the only wild native deer left in Ireland. However, in recent years, roaming deer in Kerry have been blamed for causing traffic accidents and damage to farmland, leading to calls for a cull. The Wild Deer Association of Ireland says while it is not against a cull, it must be done in way that is mindful of the genetic integrity of the herd. The last time a cull was carried out was in 2009. Mr Hannigan said the group was not against culling but was opposed to “indiscriminate culling that doesn’t

follow a management plan”. However, the statement from the Department added: “They (culls) are conducted in accordance with best husbandry practice and in full conformity with scientific and agricultural guidelines. “The shooting is being carried out responsibly and appropriately by qualified, trained and competent and expert NPWS staff.” The Department denied any calves had been orphaned as a result of the cull.

THERE was widespread sadness at the death of a church warden after a boat capsized on Sunday in Kenmare Bay. The body of Bill Topham, 55, was recovered on Monday morning. A second man survived after being rescued swimming towards the shore. The pair had set out at around lunchtime from the old pier in Templenoe, in a Canadian-style open canoe. They were intending to go duck shooting on what was the last day of the shooting season. The canoe reportedly capsized and the men were thrown in to the water.

Fleming Calls For Staff For Killarney Gardens As Tourist Season Fast Approaches

Why Shopping At The Works Is A Rewarding Experience

WORK is nearing completion on the multi-million euro restoration of Killarney House and Gardens but yet no staff have been hired for what will be one of the biggest tourist attractions in Kerry, according to Kerry TD Tom Fleming of the Independent Alliance. Deputy Fleming raised the matter, which he described as a “matter of urgency”, with the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. “The tourism season is about to get underway and Killarney House and Gardens will not only be a huge addition to tourism but to the economy in Kerry also,” Deputy Fleming said. “It’s very worrying that no staff have been hired for this tourist attraction which has been restored as part of a €7.1 million project. “I sincerely hope that staffing, or the lack of, will not result in any unnecessary delays in the opening of this hugely important addition to the National Park and to Killarney.” The landscaping and planting of the grounds and ornamental gardens is expected to be concluded in the coming weeks. The interpretation/ exhibition phase of the project is also advancing. In response to questioning from Deputy Fleming, Minister for the Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, said: “Staffing requirements remain the subject of on-going consideration in light of the overall business needs and within the pay framework approved for 2016. “Once this interpretation/ exhibition phase has been moved forward sufficiently, the staffing requirements of the project will be addressed. In this regard, the nature of the posts required, as well as the numbers involved and the budgetary implications, will be determined in due course.”

FEBRUARY 1 heralds the beginning of springtime and honours St Brigid, the patron saint of the farming community. The greater Killarney area marked the festival with full pageantry this week. As always, the talented Kilgobnet Biddy Group, Beaufort, upheld the Biddy tradition with gusto. Regarded as one of the oldest and most colourful of Irish customs, it involves pageantry at its best, combining as it does pagan and Christian traditions. The Kilgobnet Biddies well spend the next few nights calling to houses and halls playing music and collecting funds for Kilgobnet National School.

Think Pink And Don Your Hat ALL are urged to lend their support to the pink hats world record bid, which will take place in Kerry this Monday, February 8. Hundreds Gather To Say Goodbye To Sheila HUNDREDS of mourners gathered to pay their last respects to popular Killarney woman Sheila Kelliher this week. Sheila (née McGillicuddy) of Clash, Lissivigeen, and late of Ardshanavooley, Killarney, was laid to rest on Wednesday after requiem Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral. She is survived by her husband Tomás, sons Stephen and Ryan, mother Mary, sister Noreen, brothers David and Seán, parents-in-law Ann and Seán, and many relatives and friends. The untimely death of the vibrant 54-year-old caused a cloud of sadness to descend on Killarney. The requiem Mass was led by Fr Kieran O’Brien, who said anyone that ever befriended Sheila made a friend for life. “She was so vibrant, so energetic,” he said, adding: “In the words of her favourite song, she was On Top of the World. She was the light of the world; the salt of the earth.” Fr Kieran spoke of how proud Sheila was of her family and their achievements, including her husband and sons' talents on the golf course as well as on the football and soccer pitches. Fr O’Brien also spoke of Sheila’s special relationship with her mother, Mary. Her love of fashion and sport and her strong faith were also recalled during the Mass. At the conclusion, Sheila’s brother, Seán, thanked relatives, friends and neighbours

for the love they showed to Sheila during her illness. Sheila was a hairdresser by profession and worked with Sean and Rose Duggan in their salon on College Square, and later worked in the Great Southern Hotel and the Aghadoe Heights Hotel. Sheila loved fashion and music and enjoyed singing, dancing and playing the piano. On Top of the World by The Carpenters was her favourite party piece. “Now, you are going to the top of the world, girl. We’ll miss you,” Seán said. Killarney Musical Society, Killarney Celtic FC and students from St Brendan’s College provided a guard of honour as the funeral cortege made its way to Aghadoe cemetery.

Young Quiz Maestros Have The Answers KERRY’S youngest general knowledge whizzes strutted their stuff with gusto when local primary schools lined out for a major quiz event at the weekend. The schools were invited to participate in the first stage of the nationwide 2016 Credit Union Schools’ Quiz competition, which was run by Killarney Credit Union Ltd, in the INEC on Sunday. High Street Junction Sparks Debate NEWS that the traffic lights at the junction of High Street and Rock Road in Killarney would not be operating for a few days proved a touchstone for lively debate as soon as we released it on Killarney Advertiser’s website and Facebook page last Friday. Kerry County Council advised at the time that the lights would not be operational again until last Monday, while repairs were carried out. The local authority urged motorists to proceed with caution in the area and to be accommodating towards other motorists until the traffic lights were repaired. This story generated a huge response among our readers:

“It’s time for the Roads Authority to consider putting a temporary roundabout there, on a trial basis, to see if they can free up the congestion the junction causes on High Street at peak times...” “Traffic moving a lot more smoothly without lights…if people were used to it and the correct markings on the road it might help out figuring a solution to this ridiculous junction…. anything is better than the current set-up!”

“Dangerous!”

28

Killarney Advertiser 05.02.16

"

“A simple roundabout, on a trial basis, would be an excellent start.”

“If you're asking me it's running a lot better, all that is needed now is to replace lights with pedestrian crossing.” “Needs a temporary lollipop person for safety of pedestrians, young and old, to cross the road at the top of High Street.”

“Don't think that will happen. Should be three pedestrian crossings made there and take away the lights traffic, moving better without them.”

Call For Fence At Ballydowney To Prevent Deer From Endangering Road Users

Councillor Michael Gleeson.

At the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District, I asked for Kerry County Council to make contact with both the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the NRA with a view to having funds made available for the provision of an adequate fence on the N72 lefthand side outbound from Ballydowney as far as the Castlerosse stone wall. This fence is desperately needed in order to prevent deer from trespassing onto the carriageway and endangering all road users. The number of near escapes from serious injury or even death is of

litany proportions. Kerry County Council replied that it had meetings with the TII (NRA), the Garda Síochána and the NPWS regarding this section of road. During these discussions it was felt that the provision of fencing from Ballydowney to the Castlerosse would not be of benefit, as deer would still be able to enter on to the public road from other locations, and the fence may prevent deer who had got on to the roadway from getting back into the National Park. I am disappointed with the reply. It must surely be possible to put in place a fencing arrangement that would ensure that deer would not trespass onto the very busy roadway. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Kerry Independent Alliance, Clasheen, Killarney

‘LISTRY BRIDGE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED’ IT WAS with great excitement I read in your publication that Cllr John Sheahan and Cllr Brendan Cronin have announced funding of almost €90,000 for Listry Bridge. In 2009, Cllr Cronin announced that €27,000 would be spent on signage and markings on the same bridge. Could I ask through your publication, how many accidents have occurred on Listry Bridge since the original allocation of funding? What I can tell your readers is that some of that original signage was hit within one week of installation and that now none of it exists and here we are seven years later throwing further good taxpayers’ money after bad! Listry Bridge is both dangerous and structurally unsafe and needs to be replaced, nothing less will do! Your faithful taxpayer, Brendan O'Shea, Listry Bridge (what's left of it), Faha, Killarney

in part one of our two-part election special BRIAN FINUCANE People Before Profit Profile

SEE NEXT WEEK’S EDITION which will feature further profiles of general election candidates in our constituency

MICHAEL HEALY-RAE Independent Profile

Michael Healy-Rae has many fond memories of Killarney from growing up visiting his grandparents on the Port Road, and of course his own late mother in Scrahan Mews. “I am standing for re-election to Dáil Éireann. I have a proven track record of diligently working for the people of all of Kerry at all times,” he said. “Killarney town in my opinion is a major tourism centre in Ireland. It has great natural beauty and heritage that is beyond compare. This in itself brings responsibilities, the National Park and Muckross House are in serious need of additional funding to enhance the excellent service and visit that it can provide, this is what people come to see and it is what our economy in Killarney depend on.”

Priorities

Issues such as changes in traffic management and parking have caused concerns to residents over the last couple of months, feels Deputy Healy-Rae. “These issues need to be addressed. I have always believed that wider consultation by our local authority when carrying out works in a town such as Killarney is vital,” he said. Job creation is another priority in order to retain young people in the community. “Sadly, over the years many of our manufacturing jobs have closed down, while the town is very fortunate to have Liebherr and other substantial employers,” he said.

wedding update of the week update

Wedding bells for Kay and John By Eve Kelliher

THEIR paths crossed during a bank holiday weekend and Kay Dowd and John O’Leary exchanged wedding vows recently. Kay, from Firies, and Ballydesmond native John met in McSorley’s, Killarney, in June 2006 and John popped the question on Kay’s birthday, August 26, 2014. Kay, the daughter of Eileen and Jerry Dowd, and John, the son of Joan and the late Tom O’Leary, were wed in St Gertrude’s Church in a ceremony led by Fr Tadhg O Dochartaigh. The sun smiled down as the newlyweds stopped off for ice cream cones in the bride’s shop in Firies village while guests enjoyed finger food in Pat Sheehan’s Bar in Firies. The couple posed for the camera of Padraig Healy of Evoque Photography at scenic spots throughout Killarney, including Ross Castle. They celebrated long into the night at the reception, in the Heights Hotel Killarney. Kay looked stunning in a Mori Lee by Madeline Gardner

dress teamed with bridal shoes handpainted by family friend Rena Kennelly. Kay’s sisters Alice Dowd, Hannah Kennedy and Ellen Dowd were her bridesmaids while John’s brother Jimmy O’Leary was best man with their brother Nicky O’Leary joining forces with the groom’s friend Paul Kearney in the role of groomsmen. John’s niece Niamh Murphy was flower girl and Kay’s nephew Darragh Kennedy was pageboy. Special guests included groom's sister Theresa and family who came from England, and the bride’s aunt and family from Dublin The bride’s brother-in-law John Kennedy surprised the couple with a handcrafted sweet cart. The bridal hair was by Karen Riordan with makeup by Rosemary Crowley of Renew at the Castlerosse Hotel, Killarney. John Foley of Cosmo Productions was the videographer. The newlyweds and their guests danced the night away to the sounds of the Two Mikes and Family Ties as well as DJ Mike Fitz. The bride and groom honeymooned in Thailand and

Rhone labels stand among the best of the best I ASSOCIATE heavy, well-structured, long-lived wines with Bordeaux. I associate light-bodied, fruity, easy drinking wines with Beaujolais. In the north of the valley, Syrah is used to produce all of the red wine while the whites are made from varietals such as Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. KILLARNEY was a real sporting destination on Friday as it played host to the third annual Kerry Sport Star & Special Awards. The gala event unfolded in The Malton Hotel and it saw Kerry, South Kerry and St Mary’s footballer Bryan Sheehan receive a standing ovation as he won the Supreme Sporting Award. Awards in 33 different categories were presented. The star-studded ceremony is the brainchild of Ken O’Day, who first organised it in 2014. “This year was even bigger and better than previous years and was held in support of Valentia Lifeboat,” he said. Ken thanked his fellow judges Weeshie Fogarty, Murt Murphy, Padraig Hartnett and Robin O’Day. He also paid tribute to the award directors, Robin and Darren O’Day.

An Island Community: The Ebb & Flow of the Great Blasket By Micheal De Mordha

Translated by Gabriel Fitzmaurice

THE Great Blasket Island is a speck of rock off Ireland’s west coast, battered by the cold waves of the North Atlantic, miles from the nearest town on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. Even at its peak, when its fisherman in their little naomhóga were hauling in nets bursting with mackerel, the population never reached 200 souls. It was abandoned in 1953.

Yet there is something about this little island and its Irish-speaking inhabitants that has fascinated Ireland and the world. Writers and poets from the Great Blasket, from Ireland and from abroad documented life there. TDs in the Dáil in Dublin debated its affairs, and so did MPs in Parliament in London. Taoiseach Éamon de Valera visited twice. In this book, originally published in Irish as Scéal agus Dán Oileáin, the author draws on personal experience, interviews with islanders, and a wealth of other sources to present a textured, comprehensive social and cultural history of this iconic island.

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 5:1-11: Jesus invites Peter to put out the net again, and he does so though he thinks it pointless. When have you felt it was pointless to stick with a task, but did so nonetheless and been surprised by results? We never know when our efforts are going to bear fruit. “Push out into the deep.” The invitation is to go out into unfamiliar waters, where we are not sure what will happen, where we feel uneasy and our safety is not assured. When have you responded positively to that kind of an invitation and got positive results you did not expect? We get a glimpse of the preparation of the disciples leading to their decision to follow Jesus. They were helped by the interest and concern of Jesus (cured Peter’s mother-in-law); attracted by his work and teaching; and witnessed the power of God at work through him. This led them to “leave everything and follow him”. What has been the story of key decisions or turning points in your life? Who was Jesus for you in those situations? John Byrne OSA

PUT OUT INTO THE DEEP

JESUS is preaching at Lake Gennesaret (the Sea of Galilee) in this week's Gospel. This is Luke’s account of the calling of the First Disciples which takes place in the context of a miraculous catch of fish. Jesus is using Simon’s boat as a sort of platform from which to address the crowds who had gathered around him. Already Jesus is gaining popularity and the crowds are “pressing” near to him. Clearly they see something in Jesus that is attractive and fulfilling. Simon is most likely being polite when he agrees to try again for a catch, possibly thinking that Jesus should leave the fishing to the professionals. Simon obeys, takes the risk, lets go of his pride, and the result is an overwhelming catch of fish. It can be hard to trust others at times; it can be difficult to let go of what is familiar to us. We are constantly being challenged to do this. The big challenge is to trust that God knows what God is doing and is constantly urging us to pull away from the shore. In the words of Paulo Coelho: “A boat is safe in the harbour; but this is not the purpose of a boat.” Jane Mellett

SHOWING MERCY

FATHER Seamus O’Connell will give a presentation entitled Showing Mercy – The Road to Life according to Luke’s Jesus, in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service Centre, Fairhill, Killarney, next Friday, February 12, from 7.30pm-9.30pm. For more information, ring 064-6632644.

BEST WISHES TO HELENA CONNOLLY

THE Killarney Parish has sent its best wishes to Helena Connolly who has been pastoral worker in the parish over the last number of years. “We have greatly appreciated her ministry amongst us, her gentle approach, her ability to turn her hand to many aspects of parish life, and indeed her great gift of music that has enriched many a liturgy,” said a spokesperson for the priests of the parish. “Over her time in Kerry she has been involved in pre- sacramental faith formation in the parishes of our pastoral area, and with the diocese too in her work on the Diocesan Pastoral Renewal Team. After many years in the Kingdom, Helena now takes up a role closer to her beloved home of Fermanagh, and certainly our loss is their gain. On behalf of the priests and the parish, we extend our deepest thanks to her for all she brought to us, and we wish her every blessing in her new ministry.”

Passion For Fashion To Raise Cash For A Good Cause DO YOU love shopping for clothes? Here’s your chance to indulge in a spree and support a deserving cause into the bargain. The stylish team at Scamps & Scholars Childcare Centre in Killorglin has set the wheels in motion for a fundraising fashion event in aid of Kerry Cork Health Link Bus and the childcare centre itself. Second Time Around is a fashion extravaganza of over 1500 ‘preloved’ fashion items, all ready for resale over the weekend of February 19-21 at the Scamps & Scholars premises on Langford Street in Killorglin. “All proceeds will go to the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus and the Scamps & Scholars Montessori

fund,” said Derek O’Leary of Scamps & Scholars. Last year the Kerry Cork health link bus brought people from all over Kerry and West cork to attend over 3,000 appointments in the Cork University Hospital. “The bus service to date, receives no Government funding and is funded entirely from sponsorship and fundraising events,” he added. “By supporting this event, you are making a difference to the emotional well-being of the users and that of their families. You can give cancer patients that peace of mind that they have a safe, secure and supportive method of

attending their appointment in Cork University Hospital.” This service also engages with schools to ensure that the younger population receive information on cancer prevention, reducing the risk of cancer, screening, body awareness and healthy lifestyle. Scamps & Scholars is a charitable company that provides low-cost, high quality childcare and early years education to about 170 families. Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is hosting its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition. Here Jill Duggan explains how toning tables can help you streamline your body

MOST dieters expect to lose as much as four times what they really can in a six-month period.

It's important to tone up while losing weight. You will appear to have lost more than you have. Your posture will improve so you will automatically look slimmer. Compliments will be flowing and In turn boost your confidence to keep going. Increase in circulation from t h e

toning tables will in turn give you increase in energy and the release endorphins which will also keep motivation up. Think smaller: Count on losing just 10% of your weight within six months, and focus on keeping it off for more than a year. But be careful about relying solely on figures. A number on the scale isn't a goal; it's a measurement of success. Instead, focus on behaviours you wish to change: to reduce your daily fat intake to below 35%, or to cut out your afternoon treat. Also, consider setting non-weight-related goals, such as fitting into your favourite skirt. The pounds you'll automatically lose in the process will seem like a bonus. •Our annual sale is now on, with two courses of toning tables for the price of one. Call 064-6632966 for more information

HOME & AWAY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + VIEWS F ZIKA - CAUSE FOR WORLDWIDE WORRY Two adults have been confirmed with the Zika virus in Ireland, health chiefs have said. The cases, the first of their kind in the country, are unrelated to each other and both patients are said to be currently well and fully recovered. Both individuals have a history of travel to a Zika-affected country, Ireland's Health Service Executive (HSE) confirmed. The World Health Organisation has declared that the clusters of braindamaged babies born in Brazil – linked to but not proven to be caused by the Zika virus – constitute a public health emergency of international concern. The declaration, made by the WHO director Margaret Chan, will trigger funding for research to try to establish whether the Zika virus, spread by mosquitoes, is responsible for the large numbers of babies born with abnormally small heads in Brazil. It will also put resources behind a massive effort to prevent pregnant women becoming infected and, through mosquito control, stop the virus spreading. Chan called the birth of thousands of babies with microcephaly “an extraordinary event and a public health threat to other parts of the world”. The mosquito-borne Zika virus, which is suspected of causing brain damage to babies in Brazil, is likely to spread to all countries in the Americas except for Canada and Chile, the World Health Organisation has said. Apparently the mosquito could not survive the cold of Canada or the higher altitudes of Chile. In November, Brazil’s health ministry confirmed the virus was linked to a foetal deformation known as microcephaly, in which infants are born with smaller than usual brains. Brazil has reported 3,893 suspected cases of microcephaly, the WHO said last Friday, over 30 times more than had been reported in any year since 2010. The disease’s rapid spread, to 21 countries in the region since May 2015, is due to a lack of immunity among the population and the prevalence of the Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries the virus, the WHO said in a statement. Zika has historically occurred in parts of Africa, south-east Asia and the Pacific islands. But it is normally a mild disease and there is little scientific data on it, so it is unclear why it might be causing microcephaly in Brazil, the WHO has said. Pregnant women have already been advised to avoid the Olympics in Brazil, and experts say the virus could spread to the US and Australia. Authorities in Brazil are seeking to calm fears among potential Olympic visitors as August is a dryer month and the mosquito count should be lower. Pregnant women will be advised to avoid popular holiday destinations like Florida or Queensland in Australia if the dangerous Zika virus spreads. Experts from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Oxford University warned that Zika was likely to spread to the same places as dengue virus because both are carried by the same mosquito. Many southern states in the US now have dengue and there as particularly virulent outbreak in the Florida Keys last May. Queensland has also had problems with the disease. The Pan American Health Organisation said it was likely that Zika would spread ‘throughout the Americas’ and the government has warned pregnant women not to travel to wherever the disease is present. There is currently no vaccine or drug to prevent an infection and symptoms include joint pain, a rash, eye pain, headache and muscle pain - similar to dengue fever. However pregnant women are most at risk as it can lead to their children being born severely malformed. Since the outbreak began, nearly 4,000 babies have been born with abnormally smaller heads, a condition doctors call microcephaly, which often causes brain damage. As a result, campaigners are calling on Latin American governments to rethink their policies on contraception and abortion because of the spread of Zika virus, which they fear will lead to a rise in women’s deaths from unsafe abortions as well as the predicted surge in brain-damaged babies.Several governments in the region have advised women to postpone getting pregnant for up to two years, which reproductive health groups say is impossible in countries where birth control is not easily available and many women fall pregnant through sexual violence. Anis, a feminist bio-ethical research institute, plans on taking a case to the Supreme Court to guarantee access to contraception, access to early diagnostic testing, and the right to safe and legal abortion in cases of microcephaly. Abortion is illegal in Brazil except in cases of rape, when it is permitted up to 20 weeks into the pregnancy or where there is a risk to the mother’s life. Latin America has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the world – 95% of abortions carried out there are performed in unsafe conditions. The Guttmacher Foundation’s research shows that about 23 million women have an unmet need for contraception and account for 75% of pregnancies in the region.

PATH TO PEACE The right of election is the very essence of the Constitution and I have great admiration for anyone who stands for elective office. As the door-to-door canvas goes on, candidates will understand what Churchill meant when he said that no part of the education of a politician is more indispensable than the fighting of elections. Meanwhile, I wish them well. Almost 100 years ago, in the General Election of 1918, Sinn Féin won 73 of the 105 seats in the 32 counties. While this success did not represent the huge majority of votes it suggests, it certainly reflected the mighty swing of public opinion in the thirty months since the Rising of 1916. This was seen by Sinn Féin as a whole-hearted vote for a Republic, since this was a clearly stated objective of the Sinn Féin manifesto and this was the gauntlet flung down by ardent Republicans when the time came for the Treaty negotiators to settle for less. It was their interpretation. I can never understand how the potential of this powerful bloc of 73 seats wasn’t used efficiently in the House of Commons as a means to push for Home Rule and, eventually, Independence. Parnell’s Irish Parliamentary Party dislodged two British governments and held the balance of power between the Conservatives and the Liberals. He used the numbers he had to their full potential. That balance of power could have been used again to gain Independence. We would have been spared the horrors of the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. One eminent historian maintained that the vocabulary was one of the difficulties which led to the Civil War. Many Irish did not really understand the difference between a republic and an autonomous government which recognised the king as its head in name. A republic meant one thing to some people and something else to others. It complicated correspondence prior to the negotiations and tied the hands of the plenipotentiaries in London and De Valera in Dublin. The rest is history.

ITT and Kerry County Council purchase Kerry Technology Park KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL and the Institute of Technology, Tralee, purchased Kerry Technology Park on Wednesday. The Minister for the Diaspora and Fine Gael TD for Kerry, Jimmy Deenihan, has said that the purchase is great news for Tralee and the wider region.“This unique purchase links education with enterprise and will bring major advantages for both the IT and industries in the Technology Park,” said Minister Deenihan. Some 16 companies operate at Kerry Technology Park where over 300 people are employed. “It is going from strength to strength. Before Christmas the IDA lodged an application for permission to build a new €20 million 'advanced manufacturing facility' at the park. The facility, once completed, will be offered as a location to potential foreign investors,” said Minister Deenihan. “It is a key part of this Government’s Regional Action Plan for job creation in Kerry.” The IDA hopes construction of the facility can begin in April.

S FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD A SOUND MAN

The Boss is back

The news of Sir Terry Wogan’s death was as unwelcome as it was unexpected. Plucked from the obscurity of the RTÉ continuity department, Terry Wogan became a huge favourite on British television and radio. While never denying his Irish roots, he embraced the values of his adoptive homeland while never losing the immense pride he had in Limerick, Ireland and all things Irish. Indeed, during many of his years in British broadcasting, it was difficult to be Irish in Britain and even more so if you were in the public domain. Often, during those times, relations between our two countries were tried, tested and strained. While horrific acts of terrorism were carried out in our name, Terry Wogan presented the true meaning of being Irish. It was to his immense credit that Terry Wogan retained the great love the Irish people had for him, while, at the same time, he became a family friend to his many listeners who welcomed him into their homes and their hearts during his various Morning Radio Shows on BBC2. While he was a

consummate professional, he also had the ability to laugh at himself and his TV show, Blankety, Blank gave him ample opportunity to display his talent at self-deprecation as he waved his magic wand around the pantomime-like scenes in an effort to make some semblance of order. And yet, the Blankety Blank presenter was a founding member of the Children in Need Charity and hosted the Annual Children in Need Charity Appeal Show and, over the years, had helped raise hundreds of millions of pounds for the charity which must be his most treasured legacy. He brought light, gaiety and laughter into many lives and we thank him for that. He was honoured at home and abroad. Knighted by the Queen, he was also made a Freeman of his native Limerick. He will be remembered, too, for his participation in so many Eurovisions, though he could hardly have been described as a fan. We honour him in his passing and express our sympathies to his wife and family. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

HENRY VIII We’ve had so many storms lately that we are now experiencing Storm Henry, the eight since the beginning of the year. I’m not sure whether it’s this new idea on this side of the Atlantic to give names to storms but we seem to be having a new one every few days. It seems every time a gale blows or heavy rains come, conditions are described as stormy and so merit a title. I’m not so sure this new idea is working out particularly well for the house holder or the policy holder. Only the other day I got the renewal notice for the house insurance and an attached questionnaire wanted to know how near was the nearest stream/river to the house. We’ve lived here for years and have never been flooded and, given

the view we have, it’s highly unlikely we ever will. At the time, there was a gale blowing outside so we were far more concerned with storm damage than floods on that particular day. If it’s not one thing it’s another. I suppose next year they’ll want to know how high above sea-level we live. It seems the insurance companies want our money but not our business – they’ll accept payments but don’t particularly want to pay out. The thing is, I don’t know how far away the streams are. I know they are at the bottom of the field behind the house but who’s going to measure it and what happens if I get the measurement wrong? Guess who’ll be to blame.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN is set to play Croke Park in May, it has been confirmed. The Boss will play the Dublin venue on Friday, May 27, with some reports saying a second gig on the Saturday will also be confirmed. There is speculation the River tour will include three nights at GAA HQ, with the third added if there is demand. Just one night has been announced so far this morning. Tickets for the gig go on sale on Thursday, February 11, at 9am.

UN panel 'rules in Julian Assange's favour' A UN panel has ruled Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has been "arbitrarily detained". Mr Assange took refuge in London's Ecuadorian embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over sex assault claims, which he denies. He earlier tweeted he would accept arrest if the panel ruled against him, but called for the arrest warrant to be dropped if the decision went his way. The Met Police said he will still be held if he does leave the embassy. A warrant for his arrest remains in place. In 2014, Mr Assange complained to the UN that he was being "arbitrarily detained" as he could not leave the embassy without being arrested. The UN's Working Group on Arbitrary Detention is due to announce the findings of its investigation into the case on Friday. Its panel of legal experts has taken evidence from the UK and Sweden.

Pres celebrates St Brigid’s Day in style Killarney Advertiser caught up with staff and students of St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School on Monday as they celebrated their patron saint SPRING was in the air at St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School on the first day of the season on Monday as staff and students alike thought up creative ways to celebrate their patron saint. The whole school community attended Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral, where St Brigid’s crosses made by students were blessed. Back in the classroom, there was a real air of purpose as the students hosted a special St Brigid’s Market. “The event was organised to actively promote enterprise within the school and to showcase the wonderful talents of students across different year groups, especially transition year,” said teacher Noreen McAuliffe. Mini-companies set up display stands to demonstrate and sell their products, which varied from FireSafetyFriend, a device specially crafted for the crèche/preschool market, to prevent fireextinguishers from falling on curious little ones, to PresZippies, a brilliant initiative which sells half zip sports tops featuring the Principal Roisin Moore with best stand winners Emma Quirke and Lorna Breen, Norma McGuire, school colours and crest. Bank of Ireland, and Kerry footballer Shane Enright. The winner of the best stand was Tasty Toppers (Emma Quirke and Lorna Breen), which featured handmade cake toppers. Cahernane House Hotel on the market in Killarney POISED to generate huge interest both as a hotel or grand private residence, the historic and luxurious Cahernane House Hotel in Killarney is now on the market. The 38-bedroomed Victorian property, on the Muckross Road, is for sale with joint agents Tom Spillane, Killarney, and CBRE. The period building has roots back to the Herbert family, Earls of Pembroke, who were gifted estates including Muckross in the 17th century having fought on the Yorkist side in the War of the Roses. An earlier, Queen Anne building here by the Lakes of Killarney and Muckross Road, was demolished in the mid-1800s, and the current grand Cahernane House was built in Victoria’s reign, in the 1870s. The main residence, two storeys plus attic level over basement with bar, now has 23 bedrooms. The later wing has a further 15 bedrooms. The hotel has operated at four-star standard, capable of hosting up to 80 diners for functions and for small weddings (Cahernane hosted Ireland’s first civil marriage ceremony outside of a Registry Office, in 2007). Now, Cahernane is advertised for sale this week with joint agents CBRE and Tom Spillane in Killarney It was last for sale back in 2000 at a then-guide price of £3.2 million, on 6.5 acres.

NISSAN AND RENAULT TO BRING 10 SELF-DRIVING CARS TO MARKET WITHIN NEXT FOUR YEARS

SELF-DRIVING cars will hit the streets sooner than you think and Nissan and Renault have revealed they plan to launch more than 10 vehicles with autonomous drive technology in the next four years. The Renault-Nissan Alliance – the world’s fourth largest car group – said the technology will be installed on mainstream, mass-market cars at affordable prices. The new cars will launch in Europe, the US, Japan and China between now and 2020.

Safety is the watchword driving Renault and Nissan’s 2020 vision THE key word behind the self-drive technology is safety. Autonomous drive is expected to help further reduce driver error, which is responsible for up to 90% of all fatalities. “Renault-Nissan Alliance is deeply committed to the twin goals of zero emissions

and zero fatalities,” Renault-Nissan Alliance chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn said. “That’s why we are developing autonomous driving and connectivity for mass-market, mainstream vehicles on three continents.”

Robert wins Randles Bros Kerry Sports Star Award ROBERT DUGGAN has won the coveted Randles Bros/Radio Kerry Kerry Sports Star Award for January 2016. These prestigious sports awards have been running since 2014 sponsored by Randles Bros, Killarney and Tralee, and Radio Kerry. This is the latest in a number of sought-after awards for Aghadoe native Robert. Last year he was awarded with the highest accolade in Irish motorsport, the Billy Coleman Award, and the title of the Best Young Rally Driver of the Year 2015 at the Motorsport Ireland Champions of Irish Motorsport Awards held in Dublin. The 22-year-old has been recognised following strong drives throughout the year which saw him win the junior sections of the Killarney, Donegal and Cork International Rallies. Following on from that, he was also crowned as the inaugural R2 Champion in Northern Ireland gaining him a prize drive in Wales Rally GB, the final round of the 2015 World Rally Championship. At the Circuit of Ireland, which was also a round of the European Rally Championship, Duggan showed he had the pace to match the best that Europe has to offer as he went on to win his class while coming fourth in the overall National Rally.

Welcome for nursing home investment in Killarney THERE has been a welcome in Kerry for an investment in nursing homes, including €23.4m in Killarney. Minister Kathleen Lynch has announced a comprehensive programme of investment in public nursing homes, the largest in the history of the State. The investment is planned for 90 centres across the country and includes €23.4m for the replacement of St Columbanus, Killarney Community Hospital, due for completion in 2021. Labour’s Senator Marie Moloney said the “very significant investment” and “will bring a huge improvement to the environment in which we care for our elderly”. “It will also provide a much needed boost to the building industry in Kerry,” she added.

Killarney Celtic’s Brave Battle In National Cup BY KIERAN McCARTHY BRAVE Killarney Celtic bowed out of the SFAI U14 National Cup after a 2-1 away loss to Bonagee United in Letterkenny on Sunday morning. The Killarney team were unlucky not to force this round to extra time as they battled back from a two-goal deficit late on, but Lady Luck didn’t smile kindly on the young Hoops, who were applauded off the field by their travelling support. Celtic came close to an opener in the fourth minute when James Darmody’s hooked effort was tipped onto the crossbar after a top-class save by the Bonagee goalkeeper Adrian McLaughlin. Evan Looney then forced the Bonagee shot-stopper into another fine save minutes later, as Celtic caused plenty of problems from set pieces throughout. The hosts hit Celtic on the counterattack in the seventh minute, as Finnian O’Donnell used his pace to race clear and round Celtic goalkeeper Dylan Doona before finishing to an empty net. Celtic slowly came back into the game but needed Doona to be alert to save another O’Donnell effort, while at the other end Bonagee found it difficult to cope with the set-piece delivery of Celtic’s Ryan O’Grady. Bonagee led 1-0 at half time. Early in the second half, Celtic goalkeeper Doona denied Ben Gallagher, while the visitors – now more settled and playing the better football – were unlucky not to draw level after some intense pressure saw Bonagee on the ropes, before they cleared their lines.

The Killarney Celtic team.

Celtic midfielder Niall McGillicuddy created space in the box then but his effort was well held by the keeper. But then disaster struck the Killarney side when a long-range effort from Jack Murphy flew into the net to make it 2-0. Celtic didn’t give up and got their rewards when Evan Looney fired home a free from

the edge of the square with two minutes left, but time ran out as Celtic pushed forward in search of an equaliser their efforts deserved. Killarney Celtic: Dylan Doona, Tom Doyle, Alan Dineen, Ryan O’Grady, Jason Kerins, Evan Looney, Niall McGillicuddy, Neil O’Shea, Cian O’Leary, Rory Doyle, James Darmody, Cian Dineen, Christian Casey, Padraig Looney.

Library to highlight Kerry’s role in Rising

A Legion of Memories 1990: The Field Committee, front, Seamus O’Neill, John Trant (RIP), Bernie O’Connor (RIP), Johnny Culloty, Larry Fagan (RIP), James O’Donoghue (RIP), Tom Prendergast; back, Michael Lucey, Mike Murphy, Pat Healy, Seamus O’Donoghue, Mickey “Doc” O’Donoghue (RIP), Padraig Brosnan and Con Carroll.

KERRY LIBRARY is mounting an exhibition as part of its commemoration of the role of the county in the Easter Rising. While the main body of the exhibition (which will run at Tralee Library from March 22 to April 30) will comprise resources available in their Local History & Archives collections, a section will be devoted to a display of family artefacts, photographs and letters relating to the Rising. These items would be loaned to Kerry Library for the duration of the exhibition, and returned to the donating families afterwards. With a view to gauging the amount of space to be devoted in the exhibition to family-held documents, Kerry Library will hold an Open Day in its Local History & Archives section on Saturday, February 13, 10am-4pm, to bring together as wide a selection of material as possible. Any items of interest can be brought along on that day and copied, scanned or donated for long or short-term loan as the case may be. So, if you want everyone to know what your father, mother, grandfather or grandmother did during the Rising, call in and be a part of this exhibition. Further details can be had from 066-7121200 or archivist@kerrylibrary.ie

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s Club

Club Captain Liam Hartnett is pleased to advise the membership that the first men’s competition of 2016 has been provisionally arranged for Saturday next, the 6th of February and, weather permitting, it will be played on the Mahony’s Point course, but if bad weather persists, then it may have to be played over on the “Ark” course, we have our fingers crossed for a small respite from the recent inclement weather, although, God forbid, storm “Henry” is currently making its way over to us. The time sheet is available as usual, via the Club on-line system, and times will run from 8.00am to 11.00am, the format will be by way of a singles stableford competition. Courses Clean-up “Volunteer’s” competition. Liam also wishes to advise all of the volunteers who helped out in any way, over the two days of the Courses clean-up that there will be a four person scramble played over the Mahony’s Point Course on Saturday the 13th of February, the format will be as stated by way of four person scramble, set for a 10.30am “shot-gun” start, the time sheet is currently available at the reception at the Club House, and it will be on a first come, first served basis, but it is very much hoped that all of those that are interested in taking part will be accommodated, this will be a further small “thank you” for all of the endeavours that were undertaken over the two days of the 19th of December, and the 16th of January last. Presentation of prizes will take place in the Club house immediately afterwards, say between 3.30 and 4.00pm. The Arbutus Cup Competition The Arbutus Cup competition traditionally played on St. Stephen’s Day but was postponed due to the weather conditions has now been rescheduled for Sunday, the 28th of February next, the format will be by way of singles stableford competition, and is set to be played on the Mahony’s Point Course, entry will be as usual via the Club online system. Time sheet will run from 8.00am to 1.00pm. Re-schedule of competition diary Liam also commented that he was delighted to be getting back to doing the normal duties of being our Club Captain, we have not had an actual Men’s Club competition since the 22nd of November last, when the second portion of the Club Christmas Hampers was played. We have had so many competitions postponed in the meantime which will result in the competition schedule diary being totally revised, and Liam has asked for the full co-operation and forbearance of the Men’s club membership with this totally re-arranged schedule, it is not ideal, but it is the very best that we can now offer, and this may have to include some compromising so as to facilitate both the Men’s and the Ladies Clubs in an equitable manner.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club

During the course of his report to the Club AGM Juvenile Officer Paul Cronin reported a very successful season for the juvenile section of the club which saw a 40% increase in juvenile membership. Much of this is due to the management structure in place for this category. The club organised a Summer Camp over three days and while this may have been a late decision the response was excellent and all participants received a beautiful Deerpark top. Friday evening juvenile competitions were also organised during the season with a fine attendance. Those sessions culminated with a Barbecue which proved to be a most enjoyable occasion. On the playing front the Kerry team was comprised totally of Deerpark players. Sean Courtney finished as a runner up in the National Strokeplay, In the club events all majors were keenly contested. The matchplay was very much a Courtney affair with Killian edging out Sean in the Matchplay final while Sean ended his juvenile career by winning the Scratch Cup. Johnny Kelly Memorial Competition Due to the ongoing poor weather conditions and it’s adverse affect on the condition of the course it has been decided to postpone the Johnny Kelly Memorial competition indefinitely Membership Rates Membership rates for 2016 are as follows - Single Adult rate €135. Juvenile and OAP €80 and family €240.

Evan Looney, time ran out on their search for an equalizer. U14 Div One: Killarney Celtic B 3 Listowel B0 A great display and harder than the scoreline makes it seem; Listowel are a very good side and it took real quality to beat them. U12 Premier Killarney Celtic 4 Tralee Dynamos 4 No question, this was the game of the year so far, and both sides deserve enormous credit; this is exactly what it’s all about. Fast, hard, always skillful and sporting by both teams. Luke Crowley, who gave a brilliant man of the match performance, opened the scoring, Calum O’Donoghue got a brace, and Cian Doyle rounded off a great Celtic display that was matched in every category by our opponents. Best for a brilliant overall Celtic team were Luke, Calum, Sean Fitzgerald, John Kelliher, and Darren Ryan. U12 Div One: Killarney Celtic 2 Mastergeeha 3 Another great game. Calum O’Grady scored a beauty for us and Gary Wynne coolly converted a penalty, but it wasn’t enough against an excellent Mastergeeha. U12 Div Two: Killarney Celtic 7 LB Rovers 2 Celtic stay joint top of the leaderboard after a sparkling display. A cracking game ensued with the visitors running out the winners on a scoreline of 24 points to 17 points. on the ball

The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

Evan plays key role in St Brendan’s victory Eamonn Fitzgerald has been editor of On the Ball for 43 years and during that time he has never seen a player heading a ball for a Gaelic goal. Would the goal stand? Yes, it would, and it happened recently EVAN CRONIN from Spa did the trick recently for St Brendan's College in their overwhelming victory over Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne (PCD) to advance in Corn Ui Mhuiri V St Flannan's who just edged out Rathmore by a single point. It's making for a great contest. For the past three years PCD have been the dominant force in Kerry colleges winning an amazing three in a row Munsters and two All-Ireland finals.

BARREN PERIOD FOR THE SEM

It is a long time the Sem mounted the hallowed steps to collect the Hogan Cup, but they feel this is their year. Their trio management are shrewd enough to realise that there is many a slip between the cup and the lip!

EVAN CRONIN

We caught up with Evan Cronin this week and reminded him of the "on the ball" incident. He was bitterly disappointed last year when St Brendan's lost to Rochestown and the latter are better known as a hurling college. "I am studying for the Leaving Certain at the moment so I haven't too much time for football,” said Evan, who hopes to study Business or Teaching. His father Mossy played many a successful game for Spa. The current Spa team is going nicely with the emerging 18-22 year olds, but he does not expect them to make an impression for a while yet. They were relegated to Division 2 by Brosna recently and will operate out of that division this coming season. I expect Dr Crokes to be successful this year especially with Pat O'Shea, Harry O’Neill and Mike Buckley in charge. Evan is an avid Liverpool fan, he was very happy with their recent 5-4 win over Stoke. No doubt Stephen Gerard is his favourite player. For Kerry he goes for two players, Declan O'Sullivan and Paul Murphy. His father Mossy and Sean Cronin have influenced him so far.

30,000 on Saturday evening last. Dublin were on the front foot from the start and Kerry did well to recover to be on level terms at the break but the home side had passed up a number of gilt edged goal scoring chances particularly in the first quarter. It was a different story in the second half however as Dublin converted their dominance into scores and an early goal from Paddy Andrews and another form the penalty spot by Diarmuid Connolly had Dublin in the driving seat. Indeed the winners could afford the luxury of hitting the crossbar twice in that half as Kerry struggled to stay the pace and eventually, the All Ireland champions prevailed by a six point margin, (2-14 to 0-14), a scoreline that certainly flattered the visitors a little. So the Metropolitan’s recent dominance over the Kingdom continues, for the moment at least, and no doubt, despite the fact that Kerry can point to the absence of a number of regulars as an excuse, Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice and his selectors will hardly have been happy with the display of his charges.

Kerry take on Roscommon in Round Two

It may be only the second game in the competition but already Kerry’s Allianz Football League encounter with Roscommon in Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday is being labelled as a must win game for the home-side. This situation in the League is nothing new to Kerry in recent years however, and invariably, the unavailability of some of their regular players has been the major cause for poor starts to the League campaigns. Sunday is no different. The likelihood is that Aidan O’Mahony, an absentee last weekend due to an eye injury, will be the only addition to the match day squad named for the first two League games. Colm Cooper and Marc Ó Sé have both resumed training while Kieran Donaghy, on basketball duty for the past few weeks, will return next week. Kieran O’Leary, the Geaneys, Anthony Maher, Jack Sherwood and Peter Crowley are not due back until March while James O’Donoghue is expected to Tickets are on sale through a number of our members. All funds raised will be retained by our Club. One book of 5 tickets will earn the club €50.00 and if members step up to the plate and push it the financial return should be substantial. The draw is on Friday 11th March so all counterfoils and money should be returned not less than a week before that. Progressive 31 Progressive 31 will continue every Wednesday night. Time 7.45pm. Everyone welcome. Bring €5 and a partner. Results from Wednesday 27th of January: 1st Timmy Galvin/Neilus Daly [11 games] 2nd Moss Harmon/Der Brosnan [9

return in late April. It’s all of 13 years since Kerry and Roscommon have crossed swords in League action and Sunday’s encounter in the Stadium has a unique feeling about it. Like Kerry, Roscommon are also seeking a first win but there was a distinct difference in the manner of their defeats. Roscommon were regarded as unlucky to go down to Monaghan courtesy of a late goal while Kerry’s fate against Dublin had been sealed much earlier in the game. As already stated, it’s a must win game – for both sides - and for that reason alone there is bound to be a bit of bite to it. Expect a far hungrier Kerry side to take the field on Sunday. Throw-in is at 2pm with Fergal Kelly of Longford as the referee. After Sunday’s game there is a threeweek break before the League resumes on February 28 when Kerry are away to Down.

able on the day at the ticket vans which will be located at both the Dalton’s Avenue and Lewis Road entrances to the ground. Stiles will open at 12.30pm. There will be a €5 discount for pre-purchased tickets for Sunday’s Allianz League game. Mastergeeha FC

U12 Killarney Celtic 2 Mastergeeha 3 In this derby game the boys had to battle all the way in Killarney on Saturday morning. Mark O’Shea and Colin O’Leary were the scorers in a good team performance. DIV 1 Iveragh 2 Mastergeeha 1 ‘Geeha started well and created 3 good chances in the first half with Shane Warren and Philip O’Leary going close. The 2nd half followed a similar pattern with Geeha creating some good chances but couldn’t make the breakthrough. They were hit with a sucker punch 10 minutes to go when the home side broke away to take the lead. The lads responded when Philip O’Leary scored from the spot after Darragh Cashman was brought down and as they pushed for the winner they were caught again on the break

in the dying minutes. A good battle with full backs Luke O’Donoghue and Adam O’Connor standing out for the Kilbrean boys. U16 Mastergeeha 1 Camp 3 In this game at home the boys started well and created some good chances taking the lead in the 15th minute with DJ O’Leary scoring. However either side of half time the visitors scored. After this Mastergeeha created good chances with two shot cleared off the line and the Camp goal keeper making some good saves. In the final minute the visitors scored again in the final minute to take all three points. PREMIER A Park FC 2 Mastergeeha 2 Away on Sunday morning the seniors were unlucky not to get all three points. In the opening half Mastergeeha took the lead after 20 minutes when Donal Cronin crossed for Padraig Doyle to score. Just before the break Mastergeeha went two up when Scott Mahoney scored with well taken free kick. However in the second half the home side scored two goals in quick succession to tie up the game. After this both sides created good chances with Scott Mahoney going closest for Mastergeeha. All played well. MASTERGEEHA FC LOTTO There was no winner on Friday 29th January 2016. Numbers drawn were 5, 12, 16, 17. Jackpot now €4,350.

DAN SET FOR HALL OF FAME We are delighted to announce that Dan Moynihan is to be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. Dan not only played for the club but also did great work behind the scenes throughout the years, including a stint as club secretary back in the early 90s. This was a particularly fruitful period for the club and Dan’s dedication to his role marked him out as a truly great administrator. He also has the distinction of refereeing the 1989 Senior County Championship final between Laune Rangers and John Mitchels. His sons Fergal and Cathal both played for the club - Cathal is perhaps somewhat better known for representing the Irish rowing team at the Beijing Olympics. Dan will be honoured at our sponsors’ night in early spring. AWARDS NIGHT The club will be hosting a gathering in the Plaza Hotel on Friday, February 26th to acknowledge the many great achievements of 2015. The following awards will be presented at the event:

SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM Following an executive meeting last week we are pleased to confirm that Diarmaid Leen and Michael Lyne will serve as selectors alongside manager Kieran Cronin for the coming year. Diarmaid worked with outgoing manager Peter Keane for the past two seasons so his appointment brings continuity to the management structure. Noel Kelliher will also be on hand to provide expert assistance in the fitness, strength and conditioning department. EAST KERRY ALL STARS Congratulations to Chris Davies, Podge O’Connor and Conor Keane who were named in the East Kerry All Star team at a ceremony in the Gleneagle Hotel last Friday night.
