"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

Welcome To The Emerald City EXPECT to paint the town green as details of the second annual St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne were unveiled in Killarney this week. The much-anticipated festival is being held in association with media partner Killarney Advertiser and its theme is "Ireland – Past, Present and Future". It was launched at Killarney House on Monday where festival chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly said: "2016 is a very special year celebrating our centenary. It is a time to reflect on the past, to celebrate the present and to imagine the future. We decided to launch this year’s festival at Killarney House as it encompasses the theme perfectly. It is a time to reflect on the past, to celebrate the present and to imagine the future.” Plans are well underway to make this year's festival a memorable one.

Launching this year’s St Patrick's Festival 2016 at Killarney House were, front, Niall O'Donoghue, Paul O'Neill, acting president, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Cllr Bobby O'Connell, Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Finn Lenihan, Anne Marie Kennelly, chair, St Patrick's Festival, David Rae, Celtic Steps. PICTURE: VALERIE O’SULLIVAN

GETTING SET FOR THIS YEAR’S PARADE PLANNING is in full swing for the upcoming St Patrick’s Day parade and celebrations. Application forms for parade entrants are now available from the Town Hall or email stpatricksfestivalkillarney@ gmail.com and a form will be sent to you. We caught up with the team of organisers as they met at the New Street car park on Monday to draw up detailed plans for this year’s bumper event.

“Lots of planning is already underway to make the 2016 parade as safe and smooth-running as possible,” said festival chairperson Anne Marie Kennelly. “There is a lot of communication between the committee, the council, under the leadership of Paul Neary and Kieran O'Halloran, and the Gardaí. The safety plan is of utmost importance.”

Editor’s View ALL it took was a little sunshine early this week to prompt a chorus of comments about how St Patrick’s Day is only around the corner. Killarney Advertiser is delighted to be media partner for the second consecutive year with the St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne, which was a huge success when it made its debut last year. Between that and our close involvement with the town’s other landmark festival, Christmas in Killarney, we find the year to be a real whirlwind of excitement as Killarney segues from one sparkling community celebration to the next. St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne was launched at Killarney House on Monday and its 2016 theme of Ireland – Past, Present and Future should get

the creative juices flowing. In other news, Killarney enjoyed the limelight on the world stage yet again on Wednesday. While we are well aware of the fact ourselves, it is always gratifying to hear it echoed around the globe that Killarney is one of the top 10 holiday destinations worldwide, as it was ranked eighth on trivago.ie's annual Reputation Ranking list. Stay up to date with all the latest local news in this, our print edition, and via our website, killarneyadvertiser.ie As always, we welcome your views, so get in touch. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

At the launch of Team Ireland at the Mansion House in Dublin on Tuesday were Josh Moffett, John O’Sullivan, John Campion, Patrick O’Brien and Robert Duggan.

Duggan Leads Team Ireland KILLARNEY’S Robert Duggan has been recognised as one of Ireland’s top elite drivers with the governing body of Motorsport Ireland choosing him to lead a new development programme called Team Ireland. Robert, from Aghadoe, was awarded last year with the Billy Coleman Award for Best young Rally Driver of the year 2015. Since then Robert has secured a Works Factory drive with Team Vauxhall Motorsport UK for the 2016 season and he will contest the full British Rally Championship. The Team Ireland Foundation will focus on identifying, supporting and coaching Irish competitors who can succeed in all categories of competition both domestically and across the globe. The aim is to put Irish drivers at the forefront of international motorsport. It was launched this week by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, President of Motorsport Ireland and the US based-philanthropist and long-time motorsport fan John Campion. Speaking at the launch, Robert said: “I am delighted to be part of this new Team Ireland programme, it’s a great incentive by Motorsport Ireland which I am sure will help me personally and other drivers to further develop our skills and promote us to the next level of the sport.” Martin McKenna, President, Motorsport Ireland, said: “The pool of talent we have available to us in Ireland is quite phenomenal and with the support of the foundation, we are confident that our young Team Ireland drivers will make great progress and become the best that they can be and will go on to represent Ireland on an international level.” One of Team Ireland Foundation’s main supporters, John Campion flew in from his base in USA to attend the launch. Having left Ireland as a young man with just IR£20 in his pocket, this former roadie to rock stars, now multimillionaire businessman has committed to supporting the foundation from the beginning. He is the co-founder and chief executive of APR Energy, a $1.2 billion company in the United States.

Question I’m getting Jobseeker’s Allowance and am really interested in working with food. I found a café near me that is willing to offer me a job. They have asked me to do a food safety (HACCP) course first but I can’t afford the course fee. Is there any help with this? Answer You should talk to your Department of Social Protection (DSP) case officer about a Training Support Grant. This scheme can give you quick access to short-term training that will help you take up a work opportunity. Your DSP case officer can approve a grant under this scheme where: •A training need is identified that is not provided by DSP directly or any other State provider and is not available quickly or in a suitable location. •The intervention identified is linked to both the activation needs of the jobseeker and labour market conditions. •The intervention is part of the agreed personal progression or action plan to enter or re-enterwork. •They are satisfied that you have provided reasonable evidence or grounds of need (for example, in the form of a job offer or of a potential job offer) or an identified skill gap or a requirement to maintain or achieve accreditation (for example, safe pass, driving licences, HACCP, security industry permits). You can get funding of up to €500 a year under the scheme. (However the maximum contribution that can be approved and paid for essential driver training is €250.) You need to provide a quotation from the training provider. Generally the grant is paid after you have finished the programme, done the relevant assessments and achieved certification. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Let’s change this!” The aim is to celebrate ageing, said Martin Brett, deputy manager of The Gleneagle Hotel. “This event is all about taking control of your retirement, trying new experiences, acquiring new skills, making new friends and ensuring life doesn’t stop at 60.” For more details visit www. gleneaglehotel.com or call 064-6671550.

TRIBUTES PAID AS KILLARNEY SAYS FAREWELL TO ANDREW

The funeral cortege of the late Andrew O'Callaghan, inset, leaving St Mary's Cathedral following requiem Mass on Sunday morning. Guards of honour were provided by members of Gleneagle Pitch and Putt Club and Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club. Picture: Eamonn Keogh

HEARTFELT tributes were paid to popular Killarney man Andrew O’Callaghan who was laid to rest in his hometown last weekend. Two Killarney pitch and putt clubs joined forces to pay their respects, with the Gleneagle and Deerpark clubs a both staging guards of honour as the funeral cortege wound its way through the streets to Aghadoe Cemetery following requiem Mass in St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday. Andrew was one of the town’s best exponents of the game o and he was the secretary of the Gleneagle pitch and putt club up to the time of his unexpected death, at the age of 60, last Thursday night.

At the funeral Mass Fr Niall Howard described the married father-of-two as a quiet, hardworking, obliging gentleman who was very popular in Killarney. He said he was a great craftsman and carpenter and he was always very considerate and helpful. Fr Howard, who concelebrated the Mass with Monsignor Liam Brosnan from Killarney and San Antonio, and IT Tralee chaplain Fr Donal O’Connor, recalled Mother Teresa’s famous words of advice, “We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love” and he said those words epitomised Andrew’s approach to life.

He said Andrew was a wonderful husband to Bríd and a great father to Sarah and John and his proudest day was when he walked Sarah up the aisle on the day of her marriage to Greg Lanigan last July. In a moving tribute at the close of Mass, Andrew’s son, John, said his dad had taught him a great deal going through life and he will always be grateful for that. John also thanked the doctors, nurses and paramedics who treated his father. “Don’t be sad that he is gone. Be happy that he was here,” John told the congregation.

Pupils Highlight Climate Change AS STORM IMOGEN raged around Killarney last week, the pupils in Ciarán O Muircheartaigh’s sixth class at St Oliver’s National School were involved in an interesting discussion on climate change with MEP Seán Kelly. The pupils had invited the MEP to the school to discuss their project on the subject and ask him about the COP 21 conference which Mr Kelly had attended in Paris before Christmas. Rory D'Arcy, school principal, emphasised the importance of "thinking globally and acting locally". Mr Kelly told the pupils about the discussions he was involved in during the COP 21 conference. These involved discussions with the three most vulnerable groups, the Aboriginal tribes, the Island Nations and the indigenous people of the Artic region. He also told the pupils about the research being done in the Beaufort Centre in Ringaskiddy Co Cork, on wind, wave and tidal energy which are all resources of renewable energy available in abundance in Ireland. “The pupils are looking forward to playing their part in the global action to tackle climate change,” MEP Seán Kelly pictured with the sixth class students at St Oliver’s National School and teachers Ciarán O Muircheartaigh said the St Oliver’s Green School co-ordinator Juliette Kelly. and Juliette Kelly.

Five-Star Award For Killarney Convention Centre KILLARNEY CONVENTION CENTRE has been awarded the prestigious European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) 5 Star Award for Excellence. The award-winning team from Killarney Convention Centre collected their accolade at a gala ceremony, hosted by The Centre for Competitiveness (CforC) in association with EFQM, in Bangor last week. The EFQM Business Excellence ceremony is a prestigious event that recognises the achievements of some of Ireland’s bestmanaged organisations. All applicants are then independently judged by EFQM approved assessors. CforC chairman Stephen Kingon said: “This year’s award recipients represent a range of industries and sectors, but they all have a commitment to ensure excellence is an integral part of what they do, so I warmly congratulate them on their achievements.” “There are many advantages for organisations in taking part in the Ireland Excellence Awards process, and by passionately pursuing quality excellence they become leaner, more profitable, more sustainable and therefore more competitive.” Killarney Convention Centre joins 30,000 elite organisations across Europe that have used the world-class EFQM model as their blueprint and

Grandsons Of ‘Gneeveguilla Tsunami’ Survivor Inspire Generations THE survival of a young Katie Donnelly in what has been described as the “Gneeveguilla tsunami” changed the course of athletics history in Kerry. On December 27, 1896, Katie visited her grandmother. The following day over 200 acres of bog moved and swallowed the Donnelly residence, claiming the lives of all within. Katie’s survival was remembered at a civic reception hosted by Killarney Municipal District, Kerry County Council, for her grandsons, Tom Joe and Paddy O’Donoghue. Councillor Michael Gleeson proposed the civic reception to honour the contribution of the two Gneeveguilla brothers to the world of athletics. Tom and Paddy attended with their wives Peg and Mary, families and friends. “Were it not for a fortunate journey by the young Katie Donnelly to visit her grandmother on December 27, 1896, neither of these gentlemen would be around to inspire generations of athletes,” said Councillor Michael Gleeson. “But Katie was with Nana and unknown to her she was being orphaned and left without siblings. Because of her visit to Mountcain she had survived. When she was a little older she, like so many thousands of others, went to America. Some years later she returned to Ireland and got married. Tom and Paddy are proud grandsons of that great lady.” He added that Tom and Paddy were “steeped in the history and horror of Sliabh Luachra”. “In Kerry we honour and applaud those who train others to All Ireland success. Mick O’Dwyer and Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan will always be remembered for the teams they led to win Sam Maguire on numerous occasions. “I wonder if anybody has ever tried to count the number of outstanding victories achieved by your athletes. Someday someone may try and then we will realise the magnitude of your achievements.” Involvement in community is what ultimately gives meaning to life, added Cllr Gleeson. “You, Tom and Paddy, have allowed, encouraged and facilitated that for hundreds and hundreds of people for 40 years or more,” he said. “Tom and Paddy on behalf of all that you have helped and inspired I thank you for enhancing lives and enriching community.”

Killarney’s Talented Young Performers Take A Bow

MUCKROSS ROAD was alive with the sound of music recently at Killarney School of Music held its annual concert in the INEC. From self-composed pieces to accomplished renditions of existing classics, the event proved a real audience-pleaser. “This year’s concert was probably our best. The standard of performance has risen each year and this is no exception with many of the performances reaching professional quality,” said Tadhg Buckley, principal. The audience was well entertained by huge variety of performances which included instrumental, song and dance from traditional, classical and contemporary genres. “Some of the music in the show was newly composed by students and teachers of

the school,” added Tadhg. “Our speech and drama groups also entertained us with a couple of short plays, and Ray O'Sullivan's job as MC was hijacked temporarily by some of his students! "I want to thank all the students, parents and teachers for the work and commitment they put in to make the concert a success. “The concert is a wonderful opportunity for our young talent to get a sample of performing on the big stage. We are grateful to Eileen and Patrick O’Donoghue for making this possible in the INEC.” If anyone wants to see a sample of the concert, they can go onto the Killarney School of Music Facebook page.

Hannah Gets Set For Mission Of Mercy WHEN the summer holidays arrive, big-hearted Headford teenager Hannah Sherry will be packing her suitcase with the aim of making a difference to the lives of young people in need in Africa. Hannah’s school, Repton in Derbyshire, has forged close links with the Dreamland School in Ghana. “I will be one of eight fifth-year students from Repton travelling to Dreamland in July,” said Hannah. Hannah and her fellow students will spend two weeks helping improve conditions for their counterparts in Dreamland. Groups of staff and students from Repton have travelled to Ghana in recent years with the aim of sharing teaching ideas and building links. The principal of Dreamland, Pastor James Dugger, made a lasting impression on Hannah and her classmates when he visited Repton in recent months. “Pastor James brought tears to our eyes when he thanked Repton for being such a massive part of Dreamland,” said Hannah. “We were all very moved as so many students at Dreamland are orphans or from underprivileged backgrounds and wouldn’t have had an education otherwise.” Money raised at Repton has gone towards building new blocks at the school as well as its café and library and purchasing schoolbooks for the students. Hannah is looking forward to helping with teaching, cultural sharing and

International Tour For Killarney Basketball Club KILLARNEY basketball club St Paul’s will undertake its first-ever European trip this week as its under-14 girls squad travels to Slovakia and Austria. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the founding of the club, the squad departed to Bratislava and their first game on the trip will be against local team BK Petrzalka. St Paul's will then travel to Vienna where they will play three further games against Timberwolves, Vienna 87 and Doebling. Team coach Paul Sheehan, who was also one of St Paul’s very first members back in 1985, is delighted to be bringing his squad on an international trip. "We hope this will be a great experience for the girls who have put in a lot of training this year and are top of their league in Kerry,” he said. “They also acquitted themselves very well in preseason tournaments in Limerick and Galway against teams from Dublin and France. This European trip is another big stepping stone.” It was former St Paul's coach James Weldon who helped put the wheels in motion for the trip through his international basketball contacts. One of these is former professional player and Slovakian underage coach Tatiana Gallova who has organised all the games in Bratislava and Vienna. St Paul's chairperson Tricia O'Shea is also travelling, along with other officers and a number of parents. Tricia said the trip would not have been possible without the support of local sponsors. Sean and Marie Murphy from Lord Kenmare's Restaurant sponsored a new set of playing gear. Donal and Lynda Culloty, Coyne & Culloty Real Estate Alliance, sponsored a new set of gear bags. Generous financial donations also came from former All Ireland-winning St Paul's player Mike Stack of Tricel along with Geoff and Eileen McCarthy and Sean Coffey of Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

Party Leaders Hit The Campaign Trail In Kerry THE Tánaiste and leader of the Labour Party, Joan Burton, arrived in Kerry at lunchtime on Tuesday and joined forces with sitting TD and general election candidate Arthur Spring as well Senator Marie Moloney. The Tánaiste visited St Brendan’s National School in Blennerville as well as the Mall in Tralee. After that she arrived in a rain-

lashed Killarney and went on walkabout in the town centre. Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin was on his second visit to Kerry within a week, having visited Killarney the previous Tuesday. He returned on Monday to Tralee, visiting Scoil Eoin, Kerry Technology Park and Tralee town centre.

Kerry Volunteer Centre launches election manifesto THE Kerry Volunteer Centre is calling on voters to keep their communities in mind when casting their ballot in this year’s General Election. Volunteering needs to be kept on the agenda of the next government, said centre manager Geraldine Sheehan. Funding for the sector has dropped by as much as 40% since 2009 and an election manifesto has been developed by the KVC and other volunteer centres asking candidates to endorse five key policy areas. These include: a government strategy on volunteering, the restoration of funding and to ensure those in receipt of social benefits are aware that they can volunteer. The centre is also calling for research on volunteering and the enactment of the National Vetting Bureau Act 2012.

OUTGOING TD Tom Fleming’s former constituency secretary has joined the Fianna Fail canvass team for Cllr John Brassil. Lynda Horgan worked in the Independent TD’s Killarney office since he was elected to the Dáil in 2011 and he backed her when she contested the Kerry County Council elections in the Killarney Municipal District in 2014. Lynda polled 541 first preferences – just under 3% of the vote – and, following transfers, she had just under 1,000 votes accumulated when she was finally eliminated in the ninth count. Prior to joining Tom Fleming’s set-up, Lynda had worked as secretary to Cork North West Fianna Fáil TD Michael Moynihan. Originally from Ardshanavooley in Killarney and now living in Gneeveguilla, she has been actively canvassing for Cllr Brassil following the decision of Tom Fleming to withdraw from the race and she will work with the Ballyheigue politician if he is elected to the Dáil. Cllr Brassil has opened an election office in Killarney – in a building owned by his director of elections, Cllr Niall Kelleher at the Fairhill Business Centre – and he has pledged to keep the office open if he wins a seat.

Fine Gael most talked about party on Facebook in Kerry FINE GAEL is the most talked about party on Facebook in Kerry since November according to data released by the social network. It is followed by Labour, Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil in the rankings for conversations in the county. Taoiseach Enda Kenny is the most discussed political leader followed by Tánaiste Joan Burton, Gerry Adams of Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil’s Micheál Martin. Health, the economy and infrastructure were the hot election topics discussed by Kerry Facebook users.

BISHOPS URGE VOTERS TO HAVE THEIR SAY IRISH bishops yesterday released a statement calling on the public to vote in the forthcoming general election. They want all citizens and political parties to reflect and take stock of how we respond to the plight of the most vulnerable, ahead of the vote. They say democracy flourishes when it is rooted in a shared social ethic and that good social policy requires economic stability and sustained growth. The bishops also said that Ireland's health crisis is the result of a fundamental failure of politics. Meanwhile, the Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, last week issued a statement urging people to have their say on February 26. Bishop Ray said: “A general election is a unique event in the life of any country. The excitement and the hustle and bustle will be with us over the next few weeks until Election Day.” It is good for our democracy that so many people participate in the campaign, added Bishop Browne.

JOHN BRASSIL

Cllr Bishop Ray Browne.

“Each makes a contribution to the strength of our democracy. Best wishes to every election candidate. I urge everyone to cast their vote,” he said. “I express my appreciation and gratitude to all TDs and Senators for their service over the past five years. When they were elected the country was in great difficulty.” All the elected representatives in the 31st Dáil and Seanad have played their part in bringing about the welcome recovery, added the Bishop.

‘Punters cannot get enough of Danny Healy-Rae’

Independent Danny Healy-Rae pictured on the canvass trail with his daughter Maura and Brendan Hartnett in Killarney on Tuesday. Picture: Don MacMonagle

Trump Could Learn From Healy-Raes US REPUBLICAN presidential hopeful Donald Trump has been urged to take a leaf out of the Healy-Rae book. The fame of the Kerry political dynasty has spread to America where the Irish Voice newspaper, read widely by the diaspora, has devoted column inches and website space on IrishCentral.com to the Healy-Rae phenomenon. Writer Cormac MacConnell, who has been penning a popular column in the New York-published paper for 25 years, says Trump could learn a lot from the Healy-Rae style of politics. Devoting a recent column to Donal Hickey’s new book, The HealyRaes – A Twenty-four Seven Political Legacy, he tells Irish-American readers they might think they have a very colourful and flamboyant character in Trump, but he doesn’t match the late Jackie Healy-Rae.

“Jackie Healy-Rae, born in poverty in hard times on a tiny Kerry mountain farm, beats Donald Trump into a cocked hat on every point of the scale,” writes MacConnell. “If Donald Trump wants some tips on how to captivate the grass roots of your states he should lay hands as quickly as possible on Donal

Hickey’s highly entertaining history of the dynasty. “Trump will pick up a lot of folklore and you will get a good belly laugh as you turn every richly rascally page.” Recounting Jackie’s 38-year political career, his days on Kerry County Council and Dáil Éireann, he says Trump “is only trotting after him”. And Trump might also do well to shun the suits and spin doctors in Washington, notes author Donal Hickey. “MacConnell says Jackie HealyRae’s rural sayings and style were the stuff of amusement for many of the slickly-suited young politicians of the era (when he was in the Dáil), but the reality was he achieved far more for his local people than any of them,” he added.

THINGS are looking positive for the Healy-Rae brothers’ hopes of winning two seats in the new five-seat constituency, as suggested by the latest odds from BoyleSports and a poll conducted for TG4. The Ipsos MRBI survey for for channel’s Seacht Lá programme shows Michael Healy-Rae with support of 33% – more than twice the quota. With his brother and fellow Independent Danny Healy-Rae on 4%, a vote-management strategy could result in both brothers taking a seat. And this evening bookmakers BoyleSports has seen one of the biggest political gambles so far in the Irish General Election as the odds of Kerry’s Danny Healy-Rae have been slashed into 1/7 from 13/8 overnight. Having initially been installed at 6/1 last week when it was announced that he would be running for a seat, Danny Healy-Rae is now 1/7 to win one of the available five seats following the latest poll From TG4 regarding Kerry. Liam Glynn, BoyleSports’ spokesperson said: “Punters cannot get enough of Danny Healy-Rae and following the latest TG4 poll, he now looks certain to win one of the five available seats as punters have backed him into 1/7 from 6/1 in just under a week.” According to BoyleSports data, Michael Healy-Rae’s odds are at 1/500.

Cost Of Childcare One Of Biggest Issues THE cost and availability of quality childcare is one of the biggest issues facing young families in Kerry, according to the constituency’s Renua Ireland candidate, Donal Corcoran. Mr Corcoran says the cost of childcare is equivalent to a second mortgage in some cases. The party is proposing tax relief for childcare and the establishment of community crèches.

Cathal Griffin from Glenbeigh unveiled details of this two-year course aimed at empowering people with DS through active citizenship and participation in elections. The charity is spearheading the innovative education programme, which follows eight years of research and development by DSI. The education programme aims to encourage people with DS to examine and discuss how political decisions impact and affect their lives, thus supporting them to exercise active political influence like their peers. Down Syndrome Ireland has piloted the programme in Ireland since 2014 with great success. It is now being officially rolled out across Cavan, Monaghan, Kildare, Tralee, Waterford and Clare. “I like doing the My Opinion My Vote course. I do the course every Friday at the IT in Tralee,” said Cathal. “Basically it is all about politics and the politicians in Ireland and in Europe. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Referendum on eighth amendment WITHIN the recent election special I note that no candidate has indicated how they would vote in the case of a referendum on the eighth amendment, a likely possibility in the next Dáil term. In truth it is probably easier for candidates not to express their views for fear of alienating a proportion of potential voters. We need, however, courageous political representatives who are able to clearly state their views and stand by their principles whether they are popular or not.

It is a poor indictment of the candidates if they will not set out their stall with clarity and conviction. There can be little more important issue than a change to the Constitution particularly on a matter which some people view as a matter of life and death. Joseph Green, Ballycasheen Heights, Upper Park Road, Killarney

Our broken promise on global poverty HAD Ireland not broken its solemn promise up to five million people could have escaped extreme poverty and thousands of lives would have been saved. But they will remain trapped since we have now failed to honour our commitment to contribute 0.7% of 2015 gross income. The United Nations asked for this commitment as our fair share to assist the 14% of the world’s population that still suffers extreme poverty. Following the financial collapse, we looked after bondholders based on the importance of international promises. But we have reneged on our international promise to the poorest people of the world, by reducing our contri-

bution to only 50% of the amount we promised. If you agree that such unequal treatment is unfair then ask all politicians who may call to canvass to make good the promise we gave. Please also express your concern by visiting www.makegood.ie to support our petition. makegood.ie is a start-up campaign. It is composed of a small group of concerned citizens hoping to become a large group to effect change so that we do not renege on our commitment to do that which is just our fair share to eradicate hunger. TIME FOR A TIPPLE

Grape expectations from Pinotage label PINOTAGE is not one grape but two. A cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known as Hermitage in parts of France), it was created in 1925 by a University of Stellenbosch Professor, Abraham Izak Perold but was not used commercially until 1959. Contrary to some advertising campaigns, Pinotage was not invented by Nederberg, or Long Mountain, or any other producer. Perold’s ambition was to combine the best elements of Pinot Noir, which can be

very difficult to grow, with the sturdiness of Cinsault. Unknown outside of South Africa until the lifting of the trade boycotts following the downfall of Apartheid in the 1990, Pinotage has attracted vehement commentary from supporters and detractors alike. Critics of Pinotage state that the grape is an aberration with no inherent quality and that any successful wines produced with it are merely a reflection of the talent of

the winemaker involved. Fans believe that Pinotage has a distinctive, refreshing, fruity flavour with hints of banana, earth tones and bramble notes. Although both can’t be right, I think that Pinotage is not unlike any other grape, there are good ones and there are bad ones. Fortunately for us in Ireland though most bad Pinotage doesn’t see the outside of South Africa. Butterfly Tree Pinotage (€9.99) is now available at CarryOut.

REBEL SISTERS

By Marita Conlon-McKenna

WITH the threat of the First World War looming, tension simmers under the surface of Ireland. Growing up in the privileged confines of Dublin's leafy Rathmines, the bright, beautiful Gifford sisters Grace, Muriel and Nellie kick against the conventions of their wealthy Anglo-Irish background and their mother Isabella's expectations. Soon, as war erupts across Europe, the spirited sisters find themselves caught up in their country's struggle for freedom. Muriel falls deeply in love with writer Thomas MacDonagh, artist Grace

meets the enigmatic Joe Plunkett – both leaders of The Rising – while Nellie joins the Citizen Army and bravely takes up arms, fighting alongside Countess Constance Markievicz in the rebellion. On Easter Monday, 1916, the biggest uprising in Ireland for two centuries begins. The world of the Gifford sisters and everyone they hold dear will be torn apart in a fight that is destined for tragedy.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 9:28-36: On the mountain, the disciples saw Jesus in a new way. His appearance changed. Sometimes in friendships there are experiences when we get to know a friend in a deeper way. A marvellous moment. This can also happen in our relationship with God. Recall such experiences in your life. Remember what it was like for you, and give thanks. How do such memories sustain you in difficult times? The clear vision of Jesus with Moses and Elijah was followed by a frightening experience of being in a cloud. It was in the midst of the cloud that the disciples were instructed: ‘This is my Son, my Chosen, listen to him.’ Have you had the experience of learning an important truth about yourself, or about your relationship with God, from moments of confusion as well as from times of joy? The disciples were prepared for this experience by getting an invitation from Jesus to come apart, to withdraw to the mountain. Have there been times when going apart was an important element in preparing you for a significant experience? Peter wanted to build three tents. He wanted to hold on to the experience. Have there been experiences that you wanted to hold on to? John Byrne OSA

CALLED TO TRANSFORMATION

JESUS takes the disciples up to the mountaintop in this weekend's Gospel. In that space, they have a profound experience and are invited to see Jesus for who He really is. One can empathise with the disciples in this story as they do not want to leave that space. We all have had experiences that we want to last forever and are hugely disappointed when they are over. However, commitment to any cause very often involves a long and painful journey. Like the disciples in the Gospel today, there is a ‘hook’ moment, when Jesus or any leader shows us something different, a vision, a dream, something that is so wonderful and hope-filled that we commit there and then to making it happen. Then we realise that there is much work to be done and the path will not be so easy. Obstacles will arise, people will fall away, enthusiasm will waver, there will be set backs and disappointments. We are being called to commitment today, to the more difficult path. We are being called to open our ears and eyes to the Gospel message of transfiguration, of transformation. Per capita, Ireland is one of the highest polluters in Europe. This is not a statistic to be proud of. We know we can do better. Coming down from the mountain, like the disciples, means making changes in our lifestyles that lower each of our carbon footprints. We start with ourselves. In the words of Pope Francis, in Laudato Si: “We require a new and universal solidarity… All of us can cooperate as instruments of God for the care of creation, each according to his or her own cultures, experience, involvements and talents.” Jane Mellett

Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is hosting its ever-popular annual Losing It: Inch/Weight-Loss competition. Here Jill Duggan explains how toning tables can help you streamline your body

A MENTAL dress rehearsal prepares you to recognize and accept success. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and picture yourself healthier, slimmer and toned. How do you walk? With your head held high. How do you dress? More boldly. How do you feel? More confident, energised, and proud of your achievements.

Get your priorities straight Start by making "commitment appointments." First thing in the morning, set your goal for the day, whether it's to spend an hour at the gym or to cook a healthy meal. Before the beginning of every month, decide which days you'll work

out and what you'll do. Shop for healthy foods once a week, always on the same day if possible. Plan ahead Plan ahead for any obstacles you might encounter, such as a weekend getaway. Going away? Book a hotel with a fitness centre, or plan an active outing. Keep an exercise record and a food diary (noting not just what you eat, but when and why), and schedule a time to make entries. Team spirit Staying on track when trying to slim down and tone up is difficult. It's great to be part of a team or group for motivation and encouragement. Also the weekly weigh in helps!! Book a free trial now at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio; call 0646632966 nothing to loose but weight. And there’s still time to avail of our amazing sale offer, buy one course and get the second free.

HOME & AWAY A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + VIEWS F ELECTION 2016 Why can’t our politicians keep things simple? No sooner was the General Election called when they started talking about “fiscal space” and, before we had time to scratch our heads, Enda told us not to worry about it as we wouldn’t understand it anyway. Or words to that effect. And I’m still trying to figure out what Leo Varadkar, our Minister for Health, was thinking of when he said that more hospital beds and more resources can lead to a slower workrate among hospital staff. “What can happen in some hospitals is sometimes, when they have more beds and more resources, that’s what kind of slows it down,” he said. The minister seemed to suggest that if hospitals had everything they needed there would be no pressure on the staff to get things done. So, maybe he plans to keep things tight. Maybe he thinks the sight of so many trolleys acts as a stimulus. Kind of, like: “Watch out, or you could end up on one yourself!” And then we had Gerry Adams, in the wake of the horrific murder in the Regency Hotel, stating there was no gangland in Ireland. Mary Lou agreed, adding he meant it wasn’t on his patch; or her patch either. Someone should tell the Dynamic Duo that gangland is not an actual place but a reference to the world of criminal gangs and we have plenty evidence that there is indeed a gangland in our society. While it would appear Fine Gael want to contest the 2011 election all over again, Fianna Fáil are having none of it and they’re doing fine. While Fine Gael/Labour want to keep the recovery going, it is being pointed out to them that the recovery is limited. It is hard to find recovery in many parts of Ireland. Ask the people who suffered flooding because building took place on water tables and vast volumes of concrete-pouring interfered with rainfall run-off, which led to the flooding and pollution. It is true that the Irish economy grew 9% between 1995 and 2000. This was actual economic growth. After that, as time went on, the growth became property-centred and increasingly problematic and was inspired by cheap credit provided by European, but especially German, banks. Those banks took a gamble on Ireland’s “boom.” They lost and then they came looking for their money back. Because they got it back, we inherited the austerity and the hardship which should never have been put on the Irish people. The foreign banks gambled and lost: Tough! Fianna Fáil may have initiated this course of action but Fine Gael/Labour continued it. It is wrong to single out one party for the economic crash: there were few dissenting voices during the boom. Where were the regulatory bodies? Why weren’t they shouting, “Stop!” There was deathly silence from the Department of Finance, the Central Bank, and the Financial Regulator. This laissez-faire attitude at the time showed Fianna Fáil were in office at the time but were they in power? Who called the shots? However, if the Healy-Rae brothers take two seats in Kerry, all political parties will have to think it out again. It’s a courageous decision for Michael to hand the home territory over to Danny. It’s also a very clever move as Danny is well got and should be able to achieve his own quota. It will be more difficult for Michael in North Kerry where he will meet with strong Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin & Labour election machines. The Healy-Raes may not

be an All-Ireland Party but they could become an All-Kerry Party which could hold important voting power in the next Dáil. Their late Dad, Jackie, did it before; can the boys do it again? The polls tell us that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will be the biggest parties in the next Dáil. Shouldn’t they then unite to form a strong and stable government? If the majority of the people vote for them isn’t it only right that the people get what they want? They may very well need a couple of votes to bring them over the line while also giving the new combination the look of more than a two-party coalition for which neither FF or FG are yet quite ready. Of course polls are unreliable. Pollsters often get things wrong as they did in the UK last year when no one predicted a Conservative majority and yet David Cameron sailed in with a 12-seat majority & Labour were wiped out in Scotland by the SNP. Voters are not obliged to tell anyone how they intend to vote. Freedom requires a secret ballot and that’s the one that counts. Make sure you use it.

Killarney ranked one of world’s top 10 holiday destinations IT’S official – Killarney is one of the top 10 holiday destinations worldwide, a global survey has found. The Kerry tourism gem has ranked eighth on trivago.ie's annual Reputation Ranking list. With some of the most highly rated hotels in the world, Killarney scored an index of 85.17%. The news comes after Killarney scored no less than 12 winning properties in Trivago's top 50 hotels in Ireland 2015. Galway also made it onto the list, which ranks the top 100 global destinations according to the reputation of their hotels. The West of Ireland city ranks in 57th place - while Dublin failed to make the top 100. Meanwhile, Turkey’s Göreme took the number one spot. Trivago's UK and Ireland spokesman David Lintott said: “Killarney has certainly punched above its weight here, outranking many major cities around the world to make eighth position. "This is testament to the hard work Killarney hoteliers do to provide a memorable experience for their guests."

S FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD TREES

Ankara blast: Turkey PM says Syria Kurds to blame

In school, we learned that, long ago, Ireland was densely forested. In our history classes we learned that great forests of oak trees were cut to build the ships of the Royal Navy and other forests were cut to deny shelter to troublesome natives who used the forests as a safe haven while they went about upsetting the invader. Vast areas of native trees were cut and never replaced. Long ago forests ran wild. Now they are managed. In the modern world, some 85% of Europe's trees are managed by humans. And over the past 150 years, foresters have adopted a scientific approach to woodlands planting faster growing, more commercially valuable trees such as a Scots pine and Norway spruce. The rapid re-forestation of great swathes of Europe has generally been seen as a good thing due to the trees' ability to soak up carbon, something that has become particularly relevant in recent decades. But a new study questions the positive impact of all these new trees on the climate and it seems that planting new forests to help climate change depends on the types of trees which are planted. Researchers suggest that in Europe, trees grown since 1750 have actually increased global warming. The scientists believe that replacing broadleaved species with conifers is a key reason for the negative climate impact. Conifers like pines and spruce are generally darker and absorb more heat than species such as oak and birch. The authors believe the work has implications for current efforts to limit rising temperatures through mass tree planting. Europe's forests were dramatically thinned between 1750 and 1850, when the forested area diminished by 190,000 sq km. Ironically, the greater use of fossil fuels, particularly coal, slowed the timber rush, and from 1850 to the present day, Europe's forests grew by some 386,000 sq km and now cover 10% more land than before the Industrial Revolution. However, the form and content of these new woods differed considerably from what went before. The research team reconstructed 250 years of forest management history in Europe and found that the way forests are controlled by humans can lead to far less carbon being stored than would have been the case when nature was in charge. Removing trees in an organised fashion tends to release carbon that would otherwise remain stored in forest litter, dead wood and soil. Choosing conifers over broadleaved varieties also had significant impacts on the albedo - the amount of solar radiation reflected back into space. "Even well managed forests today store less carbon than their natural counterparts in 1750," said Dr Kim Naudts who carried out the study while at the Laboratory of Climate Science and Environment in Gif-sur-Yvette, France. Speaking to Science in Action on the BBC World Service, she said: "Due to the shift to conifer species, there was a warming over Europe of almost 0.12 degrees and that is caused because the conifers are darker and absorb more solar radiation." The researchers say that the increase in temperature equates to 6% of the global warming attributed to the burning of fossil fuels. They say that is a significant amount and believe that similar impacts are likely in regions where the same type of afforestation has taken place. Many governments have made planting trees a key part of their plans for dealing with climate change; China is building a "great green wall" of trees, set to cover around 400 million hectares when complete. The authors suggest the world should look carefully at both the types trees that we are planting and the ways in which they are managed. "We shouldn't put our hopes on forests to mitigate what is an emission problem," said Dr Naudts. "Our results indicate that in large parts of Europe, a tree planting programme would offset the emissions but it would not cool the planet, especially not if the afforestation is done with conifers." The researchers believe that consideration should be given to a programme of replacement. As the conifers are harvested, more broadleaved species could replace them.

TURKEY'S prime minister has said the deadly bombing in Ankara was carried out by Kurdish YPG militia based in Syria, and nine people have been arrested. Ahmet Davutoglu said the fighters worked in co-operation with militants from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Turkey. Turkey carried out strikes on PKK forces in north Iraq late on Wednesday, reportedly targeting some 70 militants. Mr Davutoglu said some senior PKK fighters were among those killed. Mr Davutoglu named the Ankara bomber as Salih Necar, a Syrian national and member of the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).

Ministers are to discuss the implications of the UK's exit from the EU Tà NAISTE and Labour leader Joan Burton has said Ireland is seeking for the payment of child benefit to children abroad to be considered as part of Britain's EU Brexit negotiations. Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Ms Burton said that since she had become Minister for Social Protection she had halved these payments abroad due to anti-fraud measures. The Cabinet met yesterday before the Taoiseach left for Brussels for what could be a crucial EU summit that will decide on Britain's demands for a new deal from the union.

Luas drivers 'very sorry' about strike TENS of thousands of commuters in Dublin are being forced onto alternative transport in the second strike on the Luas network. Trade union leaders in Siptu said they fear the 48-hour walk-outs will continue for weeks or months after there was no contact with management or mediators in the last week.

SCHOOL CHOIRS ARE IN PERFECT HARMONY MEMBERS of Killarney Musical Society took time out of their busy rehearsals for their upcoming production of Calamity Jane to mentor and applaud the talented school choirs who took centre stage in the third annual school choir showcase in The Malton last week. Singing to a hugely appreciative audience, the 11 choirs wowed the crowd. The night was topped off with a final medley performance by all 467 school children on the stage together! Killarney Musical Society was delighted to offer this opportunity to school choirs as each participating choir received vocal tuition from vocal coach Gemma Sugrue, who owns Voiceworks Studio in Cork and is a past member of Killarney Musical Society.

Meeke and Nagle misfortune again…

BUY A E2 MILLION ASTON MARTIN, GET LESSONS ON AN F1 TRACK IN ABU DHABI

KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle left Rally Sweden thinking “what if” once again after another collision with a rock ended their chances of fighting for victory. It was a story of more misfortune for Meeke and Nagle who hit another rock on Friday afternoon at Rally Sweden which broke their front suspension. The rock was unsighted. They were cruelly denied a shot of competing for a win on last month’s Rallye Monte Carlo when they hit a rock also and damaged their gearbox forcing them to retire while running in second place. They were able to return to the event under Rally 2 regulations and continued to set stage-topping times which left him dreaming of what may have been against the front-runners Sebastien Ogier and Hayden Paddon.

Paul Nagle and Kris Meeke taking to the air in Rally Sweden last weekend.

IN THE unlikely event that you ever have the opportunity to buy an insane hypercar valued at over €2 million, there's something you should know: you don't just run down to the dealership, sign some paperwork, and drive it away like it's some kind of family car. It's a little more complicated than that. Take the Aston Martin Vulcan, for instance — a €2 million beast powered by an utterly nonsensical seven-litre V-12 engine capable of 820 brake horsepower. In fact, the Vulcan isn't even legal on the street, so you couldn't drive it off a dealer forecourt even if you wanted to. Instead, Aston Martin just took its first batch of Vulcan buyers out to Abu Dhabi for professional instruction in how to drive their machines. As you can probably guess, we're not talking about some local

track here: they used the gleaming Yas Marina F1 circuit, coached by "an elite team of racing drivers". So that's one way to get introduced to your seven-figure track toy. And Aston Martin isn't alone: McLaren, Ferrari, and others run similar programs for their most elite vehicles. Perhaps it's part that you just expect the white-glove treatment when you're spending that much money — but there's also the consideration that these cars are so patently absurd that you will quite likely kill yourself or others if you aren't eased into them by some of the best professional drivers in the world. Only 24 Vulcans will ever be made, so if you're just now hearing about this car, don't even bother writing the check, they are all sold. There's always next time.

Over two million Americans to see images of Kerry on NBC this St Patrick’s Day IMAGES of Kerry and Ireland will be beamed into the homes of more than two million Americans this St Patrick’s Day. Footage is being filmed this month at various locations and will air on NBC television in New York during its live coverage of the St Patrick’s Day parade in th Big Apple. The NBC crew was invited here by Tourism Ireland in partnership with Fáilte Ireland. The NBC broadcast on March 17 will highlight Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way. Filming took place in Portmagee and included an interview with John O’Sullivan at the Skellig Experience Visitor Centre. The crew stayed at The Moorings Guesthouse in Portmagee. Coverage of the St Patrick’s Day parade on NBC will be sponsored by Tourism Ireland once again this year. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s head of North America, said: “The NBC broadcast on St Patrick’s Day is an excellent opportunity to showcase Kerry and Ireland to a huge audience of more than two million Americans. People everywhere instantly identify St Patrick’s Day with Ireland and that heightened profile at this time of year allows us to put our holiday experience in the spotlight in the United States. “2015 was the third record-breaking year in a row for visitor numbers to Ireland from North America, when we welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors. Tourism Ireland is undertaking an extensive programme of promotional activity again this year – to keep the momentum going and build on that growth.” Tourism Ireland will undertake a busy programme of consumer and trade promotions in the United States around St Patrick’s Day. For the first time ever, 7 World Trade Center at Ground Zero in New York, the famous Boston Red Sox (baseball team) and Reunion Hall in Dallas will participate in Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative on March 17, joining other sites like the Empire State Building, the famous ‘Welcome’ sign in Las Vegas and City Hall in Toronto. received from the government or HSE and we rely totally on the goodwill and generosity of the town of Killarney. To date we have held street collections, no uniform days, bag packing days to mention but a few to raise funds. The businesses and people of Killarney are extremely generous to us on a daily basis, for which we are very grateful. KCRU are hosting a Coffee Morning on Friday, February 26, 2016, from 9am to 11.30am in the Killarney Plaza Hotel. Why is first responder needed? Responders are activated by the NAS when they receive a call for a patient who is suffering a cardiac arrest, a heart attack, choking, or having a stroke. We don't replace the Ambulance Service, we complement it. How do I join Killarney Cardiac Response Unit? We are currently recruiting more members. Killarney Swimming Club

Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the “B” gala in Tralee on Saturday the 13th of February. There’s nothing like a nice piece of gold or silver for Valentine’s Day and that was certainly achieved with over thirty medals being won by our club swimmers and all swimmers achieving “personal best” times for events. Under 11 Boys Well done to Ross O’Leary who won silver in the 200 metres Freestyle and bronze in the 100 metres Backstroke. Well done also to Nathaniel Doncel who won a lovely pair of bronze medals in both the 200 metres Individual Medley and the 100 metres Breaststroke. Under 13 Girls Saibh O’Brien had a great day out winning a gold medal in the 100 metres Backstroke while Ellen Farndon turned on the style in the long distance events taking silver in the 200 metres Individual Medley and bronze in the 200 metres Freestyle. Under 13 Boys In this category Ethan O’Neill powered to a stunning gold in the 100 metres Backstroke and then took silver in the 100 metres Breaststroke while Charles Thomas O’Brien won a magnificently engineered gold in the highly technical 100 metres Breaststroke. Under 15 Girls Aisling Reidy was in electric form winning gold not only in the 200 metres Freestyle but also taking a second gold in the 100 metres Backstroke. Under 15 Boys Sean Farndon was simply superb on the long distance courses in this, the hardest age group of them all. With a touch of sheer class and speed he easily won the big race of the day, the 200 metres Freestyle. He then went on to hoover up a very nice bronze in the 200 metres Individual Medley. Mean-

while Paul O’Leary was also very much on form taking a stylish gold in the 100 metres Breaststroke in the face of some stiff competition and also collecting a lovely silver in the 100 metres Backstroke. Over 16 Girls What can we say about Janine O’Connor? Well, how about gold in the 200 Freestyle; gold in the 200 metres Individual Medley; gold in the 100 metres Backstroke and silver in the 100 metres Breaststroke. How does that sound? They must be adding something to her pasta out in Fossa! Meanwhile, Emma Quirke was also showing her class in a category dominated by these two Killarney girls. Emma won silver in the 100 metres Backstroke and a trio of bronzes in the 200 metres Freestyle; the 200 metres Individual Medley and the 100 metres Breaststroke. Nice one, Emma. Relays Our young swimmers showed their style in two new categories taking silver medals in both the girls and boys under 12 Medley relays. Well done to both teams! Thanks to our coach, Cathal O’Brien who gave huge support and encouragement to all swimmers on the day and to our team manager, Samantha O’Connor who, as always, was there to deal with every crisis - both big and small. Thanks also to all parents for travelling and for assisting in the timekeeping down on deck.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club

This week the Pitch & Putt fraternity of Gleneagle. Deerpark and the county are mourning the untimely passing of Andrew O’Callaghan St Margaret’s Road a life long member of the Gleneagle club and who was elected club secretary of the club at it,s recent AGM. Andrew was endowed with a wonderful sense of charisma who loved life, sport especially the game of Pitch & Putt and as well as being a valued member of the Gleneagle club over many seasons was also a regular on the Seniors monthly Tour. Suffice to state that he greatly endeared himself to all of us who were privileged to have known him. As a mark of respect the members of both Deerpark and Gleneagle and other clubs formed a Guard of Honour at his removal on Saturday evening and his funeral on Sunday. Sympathy is extended to his wife Brid, son John’s daughter Sarah and his extended family. Sympathy is also extended to John O’Halloran Loreto Road, a member of the Gleneagle club on the death of his sister in England. May they rest in peace. Johnny Kelly Memorial Due to continuing inclement weather conditions the annual Johnny Kelly Memorial competition has been postponed to March. Details of date to follow in future editions of Notes. Seniors Outing Last week’s Seniors Outing in Tralee attracted a fine turnout of members from Deerpark, Castleisland, Gleneagle and Newmarket. A special word of thanks to the Tralee club who hosted the competition when other courses were deemed unplayable. Next Outing will be to Deerpark on Wednesday March 2nd 10.15am.

Killarney Athletic

Results: Greyhound Bar Cup Killarney Athletic 0-5 Castleisland A very disappointing result for our A team who were well beaten by a very efficient and clinical Castleisland outfit. Trailing 2-0 after 8 minutes it was always going to be an uphill battle to get back in the game which we unfortunately could not manage. Division A Killarney Athletic 2-5 Ballyhar Dynamos Another Disappointing result for our B team on Sunday afternoon, in a game where We had more then enough chances to get a better result. Athletic took the lead through a wonder strike from Eamonn Lavin. Athletic were pegged back before edging in front once with the ever prolific Rafa getting on the score-sheet. However the second half saw us concede some sloppy goals to put the game out of reach. U16 Killarney Athletic 1-6 St. Brendans Park Athletic travelled to Tralee on Saturday last minus a few first team regulars and were beaten by a well drilled and clinical Park outfit. Athletic put up a good fight but were punished for any mistake made but will have learned a lot from this defeat. A lot of positives can be taken from this game and can be worked on at training. Reece Hegarty got Athletics goal. the kick off turning over Carrigaline and after a number of phases Captain Ger Moynihan got in for a try out wide. Pressure from Killarney resulted in forced errors by Carrigaline which were kicked to bring us down the field. Pressure from the forwards helped the ball end up with the backs and Brian lynch got in for try just left of the uprights. Carrigaline finished the half quiet strong but Killarney were able to hold them out. The second half started where they left off with Carrigaline piling on the pressure and they were awarded a penalty which they converted. Killarney played well to get Paul Moynihan in for a try after turning over a Carrigaline scrum in their own 22! With a quick tap penalty Shane McSweeney responded quickest getting in for Killarney’s 4th try with Paudie Sheehan converting. With energy levels low on Killarney side Carrigaline capitalised on a series of tap penalties to get in for their only try at the end. The game finished in a great win for Killarney on a scoreline of 24 points to 10. Munster Junior Plate: Next Sunday Killarney host Division 2 table toppers Abbeyfeale at Aghadoe. Kick off is at 2:30pm and we ask everyone to get to Aghadoe and support the team in this big match. Castleisland/Killarney U18’s: Our U18’s hosted Cork Con again last Saturday, this time at Aghadoe. However the lads lost out on a scoreline of 19 points to 27 to the Cork side. Our players played very well on the day.

Killarney Judo Club junior players had a joint training session with Macroom Judo club on Sunday the 7th of February, there was a great turnout at the event and a competition for the players from both clubs is planned for the 13th of March. The club would like to congratulate Seamus O’Donoghue on getting his brown belt at the national grading in Dublin last Sunday, this now means that he can start preparing for his black belt, great work put in so far and he is an example to the younger members of the club. Three other players also participated in grading and both Micheal Prendergast and Tim Kelly gained points for their second black belt, Jamie O’Donoghue was unluckily as he picked up an injury in his first fight and was unable to compete further. Next weekend is a very busy one with the annual Church gate collection on Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st and we welcome the public’s support, also four members of the club are representing their colleges in Derry in the Judo Intervarsity’s and best to luck to Jennifer Fitzgerald, Micheal Prendergast for ITT and Tim Kelly, Jamie O’Donoghue for UCC. CLUB OFFICER DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAMME COMMENCES RECENT years have seen a high level of change at officer level in clubs throughout the county. Time was when a change of officer, especially that of chairman or secretary, was the exception rather than the rule in most clubs but all that has changed. Officers now tend to commit to the club for two or three years and hand over the reins to someone else. Another major change in recent times is the huge increase in female participation at executive level in clubs, particularly at

Firies/Ballyhar

Coiste na nÒg Munster Post Primary Senior C Competition - 18.5: Well done to the Firies GAA players; Liam Brosnan and Shane Kennedy who were apart of the Milltown Presentation Secondary Schools’ recent semi-final victory in the Munster Post Primary Senior C Competition. Best of luck in the up and coming final next month.

secretary level and even last year there were two females elected chairpersons of their clubs. Of course change is a good thing and brings a new vibrancy and fresh ideas with it, however, too much change at the one time can see an erosion of experience that can be very difficult to rectify. Running most clubs now is akin to running a small business and indeed the financial balance sheet of many clubs would be the envy of many medium businesses. Many new officers are thrown in at the deep end despite numerous offers and promises of support given at the AGM and have to learn to sink or swim in a very short time. There is help at hand of course and each year, training is provided by the County Board for all officers, but particularly new officers. The Games Development Administrators are now also trained to identify such requirements within clubs while the County Development Officer, Tim Murphy, also has a key role to play. Indeed, Árd Stiúrthoir CLG, Padraig Duffy, has highlighted that a key challenge facing the Association is the recruitment and training of officers at club level. This year, as part of a new national initiative, the format of delivery of the club officer training will be slightly different. Essentially there will be four modules involved in delivering this programme to principal officers in each club.

with the Kerry senior hurlers on their superb 1-24 to 2-14 away win over Laois in round 1 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B last Sunday. Thanks also to the large number of travelling supporters who were very much in evidence at the venue.
