THE 2016 Eamonn Kelly bursary recipients were announced at a presentation at Killarney Library on Thursday 27th May. The joint winners are Grace Foley, a singer and musician and Darragh Guerin, an actor. Grace intends to develop her career as a singer and plans to launch a CD called Home to Kerry, a classical crossover album of beautiful songs about Kerry. ‘I am thrilled and delighted,’ said Grace, ‘the partial bursary will be a great help to me.’ Darragh hopes to attend a full time year-long acting for screen course in Dublin later this year – ‘Acting is the only career I ever wanted to pursue. The course will increase my skills, helping me to find work and an agent’, he said. The Eamon Kelly bursary is funded by Kerry County Council and aims to support arts development in the Killarney Municipal District. The bursary has been in existence for over 10 years and continues to support arts development, encouraging high standards of arts practice in music, song, dance, film, drama and visual arts. The bursary honours the memory of Eamon Kelly, the actor and Seanchaí, whose village of Gneeveguilla is included in the Killarney Municipal District. His sister, Bríd Sugrue said ‘The family is delighted that the bursary keeps Eamon’s memory alive. He was passionate about the arts.’ The Chairman of the Killarney Municipal District Councillor Bobby O’Connell presented the awards. Councillors Donal Grady, Mick Gleeson and Killarney Arts Working Group members Aidan Reidy and Val Moynihan were also present. Chairman of the Killarney Arts Working Group Cllr John Joe Culloty said ‘We will continue to ensure this bursary remains part of the core arts support with Kerry County Council.’

Killarney accountant addresses chartered accountants annual conference KILLARNEY accountant Seán O’Rourke joined speakers which included David McWilliams and Paul O’Connell during the two-day Chartered Accountants Annual Conference in Galway recently. The New Street-based practitioner spoke about the use of cloud technology to provide a next generation accounting service. Since becoming managing partner of O’Rourke & Co. in 2009, Seán has focused on using software to provide cutting edge services

to clients throughout Ireland and internationally. During the presentation Seán explained how clients are given access to apps that allow users record purchases by taking a picture with their phone, connect their online banking system to an accounts package and retail clients can use an iPad as a till/stock management system. “Business owners can no longer afford to wait until year-end to analyse their financials so keeping the books constantly up to date

brings huge advantages and is no longer expensive, as much of the process can now be automated,” he said.

THIS week Fáilte Ireland is hosting a group of high profile international journalists on a trip to Skellig Michael to follow in Luke Skywalker’s footsteps to see for themselves how the force was awakened. The journalists visit is being hosted and managed by Fáilte Ireland in collaboration with Tourism Ireland. The journalists write for some of the world’s leading magazines and newspapers including the National Geographic Traveller India, the Toronto Star and Het Laatste Niews newspapers in Belgium, and have a combined readership of over 15 million. The group also includes Katie Plick from MatadorNetwork.com in the USA, one of the world’s largest online travel magazine - followed by more than 110 million people per month. Speaking about the visit and the opportunity presented by these visiting journalists to Skellig Michael and Kerry, Ciara Surgue of Fáilte Ireland, said – “The Wild Atlantic Way is fortunately not in a galaxy far, far, away but right on our doorstep. Having an Irish location such as Skellig Michael in a high profile movie can’t but benefit Irish tourism and our intention is that the visiting journalists will encourage their readers, viewers and followers to explore the epic landscapes of our Atlantic coast.” The visiting media will get to explore Skellig Michael, where Star Wars was filmed, as well as some other highlights of the local Kerry ‘galaxy’ including: a guided tour along the coastline at the west end of Valentia Island; a Kerry Dark Sky walk in Ireland’s first international Dark Sky Reserve; a visit to the Cromwell Point Lighthouse; and a tour of Killarney National park on a jaunting car to finish off their tour.

Journalists from some of the world’s leading magazines and newspapers with a combined readership of 15 million visited Skellig Michael and for Journalists Ben Groundwater and Riana Andrews pictured it was a dream come true. PICTURE: Valerie O'Sullivan

Question Our landlord phoned to ask us to leave the house we have rented for the last three years because he plans to sell the house. Do we have to accept this? Answer As you have been renting the house for three years, you have what is called a “Part 4 tenancy”, which gives you certain rights. The landlord can only end your tenancy for certain specified reasons. An intention to sell the property within three months counts as a valid reason. However, a phone call is not a valid form of notice. You must get a written notice of termination, signed and dated, stating the reason for termination and giving you the proper period of notice, which, in your case, as you have rented for three years, is 12 weeks (84 days). When a landlord plans to sell the property, the notice of termination must include a statement that he intends to sell the property within three months after the tenancy ends. The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) publishes sample notices of termination with the detailed information that is required in various situations. In the case of a planned sale, the wording of the required statement is: “The reason for the termination of the tenancy is due to the fact that the landlord intends to sell the dwelling, for full consideration, within three months after the termination of the tenancy”. Your landlord must also make a statutory declaration that he intends to enter into an enforceable agreement to sell his full interest in the house. (A statutory declaration is a solemn statement, which must be signed in the presence of someone who is authorised to witness statutory declarations – such as a practising solicitor, a Peace Commissioner, a notary public or a Commissioner for Oaths.) The RTB’s sample notice of termination for a landlord planning to sell contains sample wording for this statutory declaration, which you should receive along with the notice of termination. If your landlord is found to have evicted you illegally, he may be required to pay you substantial damages. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Kilcummin launches life-saving network

THE ribbons were last week cut on the three newly installed Public Access Defibrillators in Kilcummin Parish, in Coolick and Anabla National Schools and at the village’s post office. The hard-working members of Kilcummin Defibrillator Group, consisting of William Fleming, Derek O'Leary, Sheila O’Connor, Johnny Guerin and Senator Maire Moloney have been busy fundraising over the last nine months and with the support of the local community and the Killarney Credit Union, they have purchased and erected the 3 units in prominent locations in the Kilcummin locality. “We are delighted to have three units erected in such a short space of time,” said William Fleming. “We imagined it would take longer to fund raise the amount of money required, but it seems the people of Kilcummin understand the importance of having these life saving devices available and have supported us in a manner that sees the three units in place.” Derek O'Leary, another member of the group and who is well known and involved in many of the existing defibrillator groups and CPR training initiatives in Kerry, also pointed out the training sessions organised to support the use of the defibrillators. “We have arranged two dates to facilitate the community in learning the skills of CPR and defibrillator use. Thursday the 9th of June at 7.30pm and Saturday the 18th of June at 9.30am are the dates scheduled for the training and both courses will be held in the Kilcummin GAA Club House. We hope that we will have a large turnout on both dates and at a cost of just €10 per person, it's great value for this two hour Irish Heart Foundation course that could help save a persons life”. “We are encouraging everyone in Kilcummin to make themselves aware of the locations of the units which are located at Coolick and Anabla national schools and Kilcummin Post Office. The first 10 minutes of a cardiac event are critical and to be prepared is a huge part of a positive outcome. These units are available for use by the general public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year,” said Derek.

Annette enjoys holiday of a lifetime A LIMERICK lady enjoyed the holiday of a lifetime thanks to the generosity of the community in Killarney. Annette Ryan together with 10 members of her close family spent some quality time in Kerry’s tourism capital in a trip organised by the Clare’s Wish Foundation. Established by Kevin Clancy, Clare’s Wish is an Irish charity granting wishes to adults living with terminal and life-threatening illnesses. “Annette is a very special lady. She is a member of Limerick Unity Gospel Choir which does some fantastic work for charities in Limerick and has raised serious money for Clare’s Wish in the past,” said Kevin. “Annette’s one wish was to bring her close family back to Killarney for one night as this is where she had a special trip quite a few years ago.” Kevin got in touch with members of the hospitality and tourism industry in Killarney and all were delighted to help make Annette’s dream come true. “We pulled out all the stops with this special trip for Annette and her close family,” said Kevin. Annette and her family stayed in the Killarney Royal Hotel and enjoyed a tour with Killarney Horse & Carriage Tours as well as being supported by Corcoran Tours. Pat Dawson, regional manager of the National Parks & Wildlife Service, and the team at Muckross House, Traditional Farms and Garden Restaurant, also rolled out the red carpet for the group. “We would like to thank Claire Scally of the Killarney Royal Hotel, Jayne O’Dea, Killarney Horse & Carriage Tours, Corcoran Tours, Pat Dawson, Muckross House, and Eve Kelliher, Killarney Advertiser,” said Kevin.

In the interim, the council has replaced the vehicle detection loops at the Ross Road junction which has resulted in some minor improvements to traffic queue times. As a result of the Killarney

Town Traffic Management Plan, the consultants are examining all measures to potentially improve traffic flows in the town and on the key access roads. “The plan is nearing completion and it is our intention to have a presentation to the members of the Killarney Municipal District in June,” stated the council. Bearded man highlights battle for suicide prevention AFTER losing his father to suicide in 2015, Gary O’Dowd is determined to turn his grief into something positive, with the hope that it may help others. The Bearded Man’s Battle for Suicide Prevention campaign was born when Gary started growing his beard to honour his father, who always sported some form of facial hair. The charity fundraiser event set for July 16, in Jack Duggan’s Bar, Castlemaine, at 8pm, is a “shave or grow” event. It was launched with the help of Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae last Friday. The public will decide whether Gary should shave his beard off, or keep it for another year. Should they vote to keep the beard, Gary will shave his hair off instead. With local music, DJ, spot prizes and the chance for you to nominate your friends to get waxed, it’s sure to be a great night. The Bearded Man campaign has raised over €500 so far online and the Facebook page has reached over a thousand likes in just one month. Through JustGiving, a fundraising website, supporters can donate any amount which goes directly to the charities involved. Link: https://www.justgiving.com/teams/ thebeardedman. A text campaign was also recently launched with Deputy Michael Healy-Rae coming on board to show his support. Supporters can Text SWCC to 50300 to donate €4. (*Text costs €4. SouthWest Counselling Centre will receive a minimum of €3.25) All money raised will be divided amongst Console and Kerry LifeLine. Just one year after the death of Gary’s dad, Maurice O’Dowd, the Bearded Man campaign was established. With a goal of raising awareness and as much money as possible, Gary decided to raise money for two charities which helped him and his family greatly after Maurice’s tragic death. Console and Kerry LifeLine/SouthWest Counselling Centre, Killarney, both offered a huge amount of support to the O’Dowd family. Gary has used social media to get his message across for far. On Facebook, Gary has uploaded multiple diary-entry style posts where he goes in to detail about the campaign, his father, and how losing his father has affected his life. He also filmed a vlog where he explained his grief and what he hopes to get from the campaign.

On your bike for Kerry County Council’s cycle to work challenge KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL and the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership have put out a call to all workplaces in Kerry to participate in the 2016 ‘Cycle to Work Challenge’ which aims to get people onto their bikes and cycling to work more often. Employees of Kerry County Council and a number of well known companies and public bodies around the county will be pedalling their way to work during National Week which runs from June 11 to 19. The initiative by Kerry County Council will see several businesses encouraging their employees to take part in the challenge. So far this year, a number of businesses and organisations have signed up including Killorglin-based Astellas, the Health Service Executive, the Institute of Technology Tralee and Kerry County Council. It is hoped to expand the number of participating workplaces this year and in the years ahead. Córa Carrigg of the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership said: “Taking part in the challenge couldn’t be simpler and is a great opportunity to commence or continue a personal health behavioural change. We are asking companies to encourage their employees to cycle to work, even just for one or two days during National Bike Week from June 11 to 19. Even if it’s only parking up somewhere en route and cycling the rest of the way, that’s a start. “We are asking participants to use the Strava App for the challenge so as to record their involvement and kilometres cycled. At the end of National Bike Week the distance and number of days travelled will be recorded. We are offering almost €2,000 in prize money to be divided across a number of categories. All details are available on www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie.” For more information, call 066-7184776 or e-mail:info@kerryrecreationandsports.ie and www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie

A Classical treat with Santa Ignace Hannah

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Cllr Culloty statement on graveyard issue I WISH to correct a misleading statement made by Cllr Maura Healy-Rea, in last week’s edition of this publication, dated 27th May. Cllr Healy-Rae stated that she was extremely disappointed she did not get the support from other Members of the Killarney Municipal District for her Notice of Motion, where she called on Kerry County Council to acquire land from St. Finian’s land bank for a graveyard, and if the HSE would not give this land, that it be acquired through a compulsory acquisition order. Firstly, I could not support this Motion as it was not a valid one, and this was pointed out to Cllr Healy-Rae by the CEO, who clearly stated that the decision to purchase land in these circumstances was an Executive decision. Secondly, I could not support it because of previous discussions I had with the Municipal Executive, where I had suggested arranging a meeting with the HSE, to discuss the possibilities of acquiring land from St. Finian’s land bank. Ms. Angela McAllen, our Municipal District Manager, asked me to request a meeting with the HSE, to discuss possible options for this land. I immediately set about contacting the Estates Department of the HSE, requesting them to meet with the Executive of Kerry County Council. On 18th April last, I received an e-mail from Mr. Pat McCarthy, Assistant National Director, Estates Department, HSE South, stating that “The HSE intends to engage with the Executive of Kerry County Council, with the aim of seeking their views on future possible uses of the property in a manner to be consistent with the priorities of Kerry County Council”. I then contacted Ms. McAllen with this information, and a meeting was arranged between Kerry County Council and the HSE. This meeting took place on 18th May last. Ms. McAllen has informed me that they had, what she described as, “a constructive engagement” with HSE representatives. Regardless of this being an Executive decision, I could not support a call for a compulsory acquisition order, just days before negotiations began with the HSE. This would be equivalent of putting a gun to the head of the HSE before talks began. It is extremely disappointing that Cllr Healy-Rae chose to try and make cheap political gain out of this extremely important issue, at the expense of her Municipal Colleagues.

Cllr John Joe Culloty. Editor’s Note: If you have an opinion you would like to air, you can write to Letters to the Editor, Killarney Advertiser, Unit 1C Park Place, High Street, Killarney, or email newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie All letters must be accompanied by a name, address and phone number for verification purposes. For those who were lucky enough to attend the classical concert in the Brehon Hotel on Wednesday, it was a night to savor and remember. The concert was proudly arranged by Eileen O Donoghue and the Management of The Brehon Hotel Killarney. It featured Concert Pianist Santa Ignace, currently studying in Mozarteum University Salzburg, and one of her former students Hannah Sherry now attending Repton School in England. The program began with Hannah’s performance of Schumann Fantasiestücke No 2. Hannah, who is only 17, played with a panache and confidence of a seasoned performer, captivating the audience from the start with her opening piece. Hannah then concluded with one of the most difficult Nocturnes by Chopin op. 48 No 1, which greatly impressed not only her former teacher Santa, but also everyone who was there, who responded with spontaneous and rapturous applause. Hannah then introduced her teacher Santa, who lived and taught in Kerry and Cork for many years and who is also a Master’s graduate from CIT Cork School of Music. She presented a programme of Chopin’s Four Ballades and Medtner ‘s Sonata Reminiscenza. The first piece, by Medtner, a contemporary of Rachmaninov, Schostakovich and Prokofiev, exemplified the nostalgic depth of early 20th century romantic revisionist music. Its sweet melodic line and complex development perfectly set the mood for the master of romantic piano music – Frederic Chopin. Santa continued the performance with Chopin’s Four Ballades, which explore and exhaust every technical and emotive possibility of the instrument for which they were composed. They showed the genius of Chopin’s ability and imagination, setting a challenge for any serious performer of piano music, which Santa took up and executed with eager confidence and expert and unique delivery. This haunting and intriguing music covered the full spectrum of emotion from gentle suggestion to dramatic explosion and was exquisitely performed without hesitation and with passion. Santa’s performance was warmly appreciated and acknowledged, and everyone who attended agreed it was a great success and a night to remember for all who attended and especially for these two dedicated accomplished musicians – Hannah Sherry and Santa Ignace. For those of you who missed this concert, you will have a chance to hear her performance again on Saturday, 4th of June at Intermediate School Killorglin at 19:30 pm during K Fest Killorglin. Santa is also giving Piano Master classes at the Killarney School of Music from June 13th until June 17th. Please, contact School for enquiries - 0646637598.

Ann Elizabeth Rohan explains why body brushing should be part of your detox routine

IT’S that time of year when you'regetting ready for the summer. Well, I’m here to tell you about the wonders of body brushing which has been around for a very long time. Celebrity fans include Miranda Kerr and Molly Sims, it’s used mainly by the Scandinavians and Japanese cultures daily to promote healthy skin. This age-old therapy has worked wonders for the detoxification process, promoting good circulation and boosting the lymphatic system, which filters all the toxins from the body. Giving skin a daily brush will significantly improve tone, helping to banish cellulite and boost cell renewal for smoother, firmer, softer,

more radiant skin. I recommend Japanese sisal brushes or any natural bristle brush as they swiftly stimulate circulation and eliminate toxins. As we all know skin is the largest organ of the body so it’s important to take care of it by dry body brushing and moisturizing, keeping it in tiptop condition. We’re creatures of habit so make this simple cost effective treatment part of your daily or weekly routine. Done before your shower starting with dry skin, work from the feet using quick sweeping movements up towards the heart with gentle pressure, exfoliating and re-energizing the body.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 9:11-17: Jesus welcomed the crowd, taught them, and cured those in need of healing. Bring to mind the ways in which the story of Jesus and his message have brought you enlightenment, and healing. The miracle is symbolic of the abundance of blessings coming to us from God through Jesus. How has your faith in Jesus been a source of nourishment to you? What blessings have you received through your faith? When the disciples became aware of the problem, they wanted to send the crowd away and Jesus told them ‘You give them something to eat’. They thought what they had was insufficient but Jesus used the little they had to feed the crowd. Have you ever found that when you give the little you have to a situation, the results were beyond your expectations? John Byrne OSA

MUSINGS

THIS WEEK’S Gospel always evokes in me a sense of a sharing: a sense of family picnic. Using mindfulness I try to place myself at the table of The Last Supper just as I do when meditating on the Fifth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary. Those schools and parishes that organise a First Communion Breakfast know well how to recapture the community aspect of Communion. Another tradition much appreciated by so many parishioners is the Corpus Christi procession. In many places it is no doubt a day special for this year’s First Communicants and another opportunity to dress up in those special clothes and be part of the sacramental community and the larger family community. Today, we don’t just receive Jesus into our souls, in song we also take Him with us around our streets. Alan Whelan Carnahone, Beaufort

THE DEEP END “IF THERE is hunger anywhere in the world, then our celebration of the Eucharist is somehow incomplete everywhere in the world … In the Eucharist we receive Christ hungering in the world. He comes to us, not alone, but with the poor, the oppressed, the starving of the earth. Through him they are looking to us for help, for justice, for love expressed in action. Therefore we cannot properly receive the bread of life unless at the same time we give the bread of life to those in need wherever and whoever they may be.” Those are the words of Pedro Arrupe SJ. The Feast of Corpus Christi reminds us of our responsibility to be in communion with the whole body of Christ. There is room for everyone at the divine banquet – especially the poor and the hungry. In the Gospel story of the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus refuses to leave anyone hungry, even when his own disciples suggest sending the crowds away. There is more than enough bread for everyone. Notice that Jesus gives the food to his disciples to distribute among the hungry crowd. He is passing on the responsibility to his followers. It is up to all of us to help those in need. Having received Jesus’ body and blood in the Eucharist, we are expected to pass it on – to play our part in feeding the hungry and working for justice. The St Brigid’s First Year football team who defeated Presentation Milltown.

ON Monday last, 23rd May, the St Brigid’s First Year football team under the guidance of Mike Horan, Denise Hallissey and Paudie Breen had an impressive victory over near neighbours Presentation Milltown on a score-line of 4-8 to 2-1. The St Brigid’s girls dominated from the onset with well taken points from Kate Lynch, Sarah McMahon and Sarah Fleming. The backline worked very well to keep the Pres Milltown girls’ scores to a minimum. Sarah Fleming added two great goals to her tally whilst Ava Sheehan and Ava O’ Doherty also demonstrated great skills as they found the net. Mairéad Lucey, Presentation Secondary School, Killarney welcomed both teams and commended them for their skills. She also acknowledged the voluntary work of both management teams and thanked Fossa GAA club for providing the grounds for the game. She also welcomed the Presentation Sisters and thanked them for facilitating such a competition. at Home Primary school child one of several confirmed measles cases The HSE South has identified four confirmed cases of the highly infectious condition, one of which was traced to a child at a Tralee Primary School . The HSE South Department of Public Health confirmed in a statement to The Kerryman that it is currently investigating four confirmed cases of measles in North Kerry and that an ‘extensive contact tracing exercise’ is being carried out. “All known contacts of these confirmed cases are being notified and advised of the risk by relevant HSE medical personnel and the HSE is continuing to identify those who may have been exposed to prevent further transmission and ensure people are aware of the risk,” the statement read.

obesity in cHildren

If the child has already had the vaccination, it is advised that they have a second one (with a period of at least one month between the first and second). If your child has in fact had two injections, no further action is needed. In its statement to The Kerryman, meanwhile, the HSE said that there is a high chance that individuals who have not been fully vaccinated will develop measles if they are exposed. Because it may not be possible to specifically identify all those who have been exposed, the HSE is seeking to highlight the signs and symptoms which they say usually appear about 10 days after exposure. These include irritability, a runny nose, conjunctivitis, a cough and an increasing fever that comes and goes which can usually last two to four days and can be mistaken for a cold. A measles rash usually appears about four days after the early symptom, starting on the forehead and spreads downwards, over the face, neck and anyone with signs or symptoms, particularly if they have not been fully vaccinated, should not go to school or work and phone their GP.

One in three children in Europe between the ages of six and nine are either overweight or obese, according to a report that also warns that by 2025 the number of under-fives worldwide who are overweight will have risen from an estimated 41 million now to 70 million. Among the researchers’ other main findings is that between 20% and 30% of all inflammatory bowel disease now begins in childhood. They also report that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease has become the single most common cause of chronic liver disease among children and adolescents in western nations. Children as young as three have been diagnosed with the illness. The report was commissioned by United European Gastroenterology (UEG) and is based on data from 46 countries in the European region. UEG’s message is that Europe cannot cope with the problem. “Across Europe we have leading paediatric experts and many centres of excellence. However these are not widespread and currently cannot meet the needs of children throughout the continent,” said Michael Manns, president of the organisation and a professor of paediatrics at Hannover Medical School. “This has an impact not just on individuals and their families but on society and wider health service provision.” The cost of treating disorders related to obesity now amounts to a tenth of total healthcare costs in Europe, and, according to the report, threatens the sustainability of public health services in all nations. Children make up one-fifth of Europe’s population, and the incidence of gastroenterological disease is increasing, but experts fear that research in this area is underfunded. “It is extremely worrying that only one out of 58 topics currently receiving EU research funding is focused on paediatric health,” said Berthold Koletzko, president of the European Society for Paediatric Gastroloenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and a paediatrician at the University of Munich. “Priorities need to change quickly to appreciate the specific issues of paediatric digestive provision and ensure greater investment into prevention, cost-effective diagnostic measures and harmonised training.” Alarm about levels of obesity is not new, and not confined to Europe, or to childhood: a recent Lancet study by scientists at Imperial College reported that worldwide there could be 266 million obese men and 375 million obese women, and that the global population had become heavier by about 1.5kg per person in each decade since 1975. Manns warns that obesity in childhood can endure in adulthood. The message of the report – timed to coincide with the end of a “digestive health month” declared by his organisation, an umbrella group of scientific societies representing 22,000 specialists – is that more expertise, more care and more investment is urgently needed. “I would have the feeling that northern and eastern European countries have more obesity than southern European countries. One thing is certainly climate and the other is I think socioeconomic status. Usually people with lower socioeconomic backgrounds have a higher risk. This may have to do with nutrition, it may have to do with exercise behaviour,” he said. “What is important that of all children who have obesity, 90% retain their obesity in adulthood. Therefore it is so important to develop campaigns in childhood.”

Views Views from from kerry kerry and and around around tHe tHe world world would you belieVe... Saint Paul, a key figure in the history of the Western world, is well-known for his dramatic religious conversion on the road to Damascus. Exactly what occurred as Saint Paul made his revelation, turning from persecuting Jesus to preaching Jesus, has been difficult to determine as the accounts in Acts and the letters vary in detail. However, a team of scientists have developed a theory as to how St Paul’s U-turn may have come about. Rather than hearing God talking to him, scientists in Israel have suggested Saint Paul’s revelation could have been brought about by an epileptic seizure. Researchers at Hadassah Medical Centre, linked to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, have scanned the brain of a man during a seizure, while he also had visions of God and noticed a surge of activity in the organ’s frontal lobe, which is linked to a belief people are interacting with a deity. While treating the epileptic man, researchers connected him to an electroencephalogram, measuring brain activity. Writing in the journal of Epilepsy and Behaviour they say: “While lying in bed, the patient abruptly ‘froze’ and stared at the ceiling for several minutes, stating later that he felt that God was approaching him. He then started chanting prayers quietly, looked for his kippa and put it on his head, chanting the prayers more excessively.” Dr Shahar Arzy and Dr Roey Schurr record the man saying God had revealed himself to him and had ordered that he bring redemption to the people of Israel. According to the scientists, the event occurred several hours after a seizure and coincided with increased activity in the patients’ left prefrontal cortex linked to social behaviour and planning in the brain. Researchers said that the patient was not particularly religious before the incident, but abruptly began trying to enlist disciples. “The patient then stood up, detached the EEG electrodes from his skin, and went around the department trying to convince people to follow him, stating that ‘God has sent me to you’," researchers wrote. Previously, scientists have suggested that a belief in God is deeply embedded in the human brain, which is programmed for religious experiences. Researchers at the US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda near Washington searching for the neural "God spot" said their findings support the idea that the brain has evolved to be sensitive to any form of belief that improves the chances of survival, which could explain why a belief in God and the supernatural became so widespread in human evolutionary history.

There’s plenty of people to replace them.” When you get a bunch of head bangers who turn down 20 per cent over three years when inflation is less than one per cent, looking for a 50 per cent pay increase for a job that is already double rate of tram drivers in Blackpool, that’s mad,” he told Newstalk Breakfast.

Cincinnati gorilla shooting: Zoo fall boy 'doing well' Harambe, a 17-year-old endangered western lowland gorilla, was shot dead after he started dragging the boy. Police said they were investigating the actions of the boy's parents leading up to his fall. On Wednesday, they also released a recording of the call the boy's mother made to police. In it, she is heard crying: "He's dragging my son...I can't watch this." She repeatedly shouts "be calm" at the boy. In a statement on Wednesday, the boy's family thanked zoo staff "for their actions taken to protect our child". They also asked that any donations be made to the zoo in Harambe's name. The zoo has suggested donations would go towards a gorilla conservation project in the Congo. The zoo maintains it had no choice but to shoot the gorilla as tranquilisers would not have worked in time to save the boy and has defended its safety measures around the enclosure. But animal activists have accused the zoo of negligence. Stop Animal Exploitation Now, a Cincinnatibased animal rights group, said it had filed a federal complaint against the zoo with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The parents of the boy, who suffered minor injuries in the incident, have also faced heavy criticism on social media.

THE recent visit of the Top Gear duo of Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc to our shores heightened our interest in the new show. The anticipation was finally over, Top Gear is back on A picture pai our screens. After new segme nts a thousand words, Chris Evans filming nt for Top Gear. He a is clearly not a car seeing the season guy. 23 opener last Sunday night, my first thought: ‘maybe 22 seasons was enough’. People took to social media to voice their opinions, mostly negative. It may be unfair to make judgment this early but I have to agree with many of the reviews. It just didn’t cut it. Clarkson, May and Hammond possessed seamless chemistry that delivered impeccable comedic timing, coupled with top class script writing from Clarkson and Andy Wilman (the previous show’s producer). Unfortunately these elements are nowhere to be seen in the new format. I’m a big fan of Top Gear, but last Sunday night seemed more like ‘car crash TV’. What were they thinking? Chris Evans shouting and jumping around the screen giving me a headache and Matt Le Blanc reading badly scripted, poorly rehearsed lines from the teleprompter which he obviously couldn’t see clearly. Off to a bad start, it can only get better … it didn’t. There was one glimmer though, an off-hand (or maybe planted) catering joke, saying “We don’t talk about catering on this show anymore”, and the first pre-recorded film started—Evans’ review of the Dodge Viper. Unfortunately that’s when things started going downhill for me. It had potential but it quickly stumbled. The Corvette isn’t a bad car and likewise the Ferrari. Sabine Schmitz’s comments describing the Corvette as a ‘piece of sh*t, handles like a Ferrari’. I have no problem with her comments and she is well qualified to make them but explain them, after all this is a car show! The old format would have dealt with a negative remark by putting it into context at the conclusion of the sketch. I suspect we will not see many more Corvettes or Ferraris on the show in the future. The Reliant Robin sketch was flat with no structure. Yes driving from London to Blackpool is no big event, even in a Reliant Robin but there would be a twist with the old trio … I sat watching, waiting – it never came. The challenge was UK vs US but they used UK built cars, was I missing something? The old Top Gear created a story around the event; why they were doing it – selecting the car – hating the car – hating the challenge – conquering the challenge - getting to love their car – and a conclusion with a twist. That was the format and it worked. Next up: Gordon Ramsey and Social Network actor Jesse Eisenberg were the celebrity guests in the revamped ‘celebrity in the reasonably priced car’ but now is was a rally cross car driven partly on a dirt track. I can’t see many egotistical celebrities exposing themselves to this unknown quantity – a dirt track. The ‘cringe factor’ on watching this sector was off the scale. Jesse just did not want to be there and I don’t blame him. But when Ramsey produced the keys of his new Le Ferrari – I was done… what an obnoxious display. I hope the show lasts long enough to show Kerry in all is splendour, which without question will be the star of the show. Beyond that there is very little appeal. And on that bombshell.... Please let us know you thoughts on the new Top Gear on our facebook page or email to newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

HOW TO BUY A NEW VEHICLE AND WHAT TO ASK YOUR DEALER BUYING a new vehicle is easy. But it could be the second biggest investment you ever make, so it pays to do everything you can to get the best possible deal.

Why buy new?

There are many advantages to buying a new vehicle over a used one. You have the choice of any vehicle you want with the exact specification you want. And you can’t beat that new vehicle smell. There's the opportunity to get consumer offers – cashback deals, free accessories, service packs, and, warranties, to give you peace of mind if something goes wrong. There are tons of great deals to find, all you have to do is choose the best one for you.

Identify your needs

There is a huge range of new vehicle models to choose from. So where should you start?

Always ask: Is the delivery included in the price?

How soon can the vehicle be delivered? Is road tax included? Are registration fees included? Is there a service pack as part of the deal?

Consider all your requirements. Ask yourself:

Visit the showroom

1. What will you use it for? 2. How long you expect to own it? 3. Are you looking for reliability? 4. How many miles do you plan to do? 5. Are you buying it for practicality, for fun, or perhaps a bit of both? 6. Do you want something luxurious or thrifty? 7. How much are you willing to spend (include other costs such as insurance, tax, services and fuel)? 8. What type of model and manufacturer are you leaning towards? These questions will influence your purchasing decision and help reach a conclusion on what type of motor you choose to go for.

Phoning the dealer

Always confirm the details in the advert are correct. This could save you a wasted trip.

If you’re buying from a franchised dealer (who sells vehicle on behalf of a manufacturer), visit the showroom to view the vehicle to make sure you’re happy with it. It’s best to take a look at the vehicle in the best conditions possible. Never view a vehicle in the dark or the rain - they can hide defects in the bodywork. Always test drive a vehicle before buying it as this will give you a feel for it and raise any concerns. For example, the vehicle might not be big enough for your needs, or the engine noise could be unbearable. Make sure you’re fully insured to drive the vehicle, and take proof of this with you. Most dealers will let you drive with trade number plates, which should provide you with cover - but check this is the case.

ADVANTAGES OF BUYING A NEW CAR Made to order You can spec a new car just the way you want it, or at least have the dealer search for one with the right combination of options and interior and exterior colours.

It’s not used A new car hasn’t been in any accidents, hasn’t been mistreated, has seen no wear or tear, and comes with a clean history that includes only being driven off the line, onto a transporter, and around the dealer’s lot. Warranty Like the rest of it, the new car’s warranty is untouched. You can buy warranties for used cars or go the certified preowned route, but the best warranty you can get—without paying extra—will be the one that comes with a new car from the manufacturer. Latest gizmos The newer the car, the more modern the geeky tech that’s packed inside. Multimedia and navigation interfaces are constantly evolving and improving, so if you have to have the latest in gadgets (and don’t want to add them yourself post-factory) the selection will be better in the new-car showroom.

Safety As vehicle safety laws become ever more stringent, automakers are forced to change the way vehicles are built and the safety systems with which they are equipped. Higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions Again, partly thanks to Big Brother, cars are largely getting more fuel efficient, even while simultaneously getting more powerful. The newest crop of diesels is cleaner than ever before, and choices in the hybrid segment are growing, too, if that’s your thing. Financing Banks offer lower financing rates on new vehicles because the vehicles are inherently worth more and have not already been hit by depreciation. Keep in mind that, when the lower APR still applies to a larger sum, your payments or total cost may still be higher. But if you plan to finance, check your deals before buying. The cheaper car might not turn out to be the better deal in the long run. Maintenance Some new cars, mainly those from luxury marques, include free scheduled maintenance for a certain amount of time or mileage. This built-in cost saving should be considered in the final price analysis if applicable. Legwork Once you’ve chosen a vehicle, or at least the brand you’re interested in, much of the new-car search can be offloaded on the salesperson, who can find the car you ask for. The same search in the used realm requires a lot more legwork on your part—hunting on the internet, visiting multiple private sellers, and driving from used lot to used lot.

CAR FINANCE: PCPS EXPLAINED HOW to explain car finance in simple terms? Well, it’s a question of whether you want to spend your hard-earned cash or go the finance route. The fact is, taking a personal contract purchase or personal contract plan (PCP) can be a viable solution for many. A PCP is an agreement between you and the finance company that will mean for at least three years you'll be making payments on the car of your choice. A PCP is a form of car finance based on a Hire Purchase (HP) agreement. However, instead of paying off the entire value of the car in equal monthly instalments like an HP, you are effectively only paying off the depreciation via your monthly instalments on a PCP. At the end of the term, you still have a large amount outstanding (often known as the balloon). You have several options as to how to deal with this final amount, depending on whether or not you want to keep your car or change it. In comparing a PCP and HP, you are usually borrowing the same amount of money and paying a similar amount of interest (usually slightly more on a PCP due to how the repayments are worked out). The fees are usually about the same for both a PCP and HP as well.

What is the attraction of a PCP?

SO WHY go the route of a PCP? If you compare financing the same car on a PCP against an HP, the big difference is that you are paying off a much smaller amount of money via your monthly repayments. This means you can have a much lower monthly payment and/or a lower initial deposit and/or a shorter repayment term. Most people tend to change their cars about every three years. Most buyers financing a car have a reasonably small deposit. For this sort of situation, a PCP will give a much lower monthly payment than an HP, with the caveat that at the end of the agreement you will have to take action of some sort to settle the outstanding balance. This means that on a PCP, the same car will cost considerably less per month to finance than on an HP, or alternatively you can buy a more expensive car for the same monthly

payment. This is what makes a PCP so attractive to the car buyer. For dealers and manufacturers, a PCP has two great benefits: 1) the lower monthly payments mean that more of their customers can afford more of their cars; and 2) the final balloon payment at the end means that customers will, in all likelihood, buy another car on another PCP. There isn't really a downside to the PCP system so long as you keep your end of the deal. Remember to ask questions and read everything before signing, even take the agreement away with you so you can look at the fine print, don't be rushed into a decision on the day. So if you are looking at financing a new car check out the offers from the dealerships but read the fine print because no two agreements are the same.

40th birthday remembrance of Ian McCarthy late of Knockinane West Kilcummin, whose 40th birthday occurs on the 7th of June. Today is your 40th birthday Ian, And we are very sad, You won’t be blowing out candles, Or opening up your cards. So today we pray again, That God will let you know, How lonely life is without you Ian, And how we miss you so. Happy birthday son. Miss you always from Mom, Dad, Neil and Danny.

40th Birthday Remembrance McCarthy

Treasured memories of a wonderful mother and grandmother Joan O’Leary late of “Woodbine Haven”, Upper Lissivigeen, Killarney who passed away on the 4th June, 1999. Mom Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky, Your needs in life were simple, Your love for us was true, As long as we were happy, You were happy too. You were always there when we needed you, No task too great or small, With willing hands and a loving heart, For us you did it all. You left us golden memories, Your love is still our guide, Although we cannot see you Mom, You are always by our side, A loving nature, a heart of gold, These are the memories we will always hold. Loved dearly everyday by your sons, daughters, sons-in-law and daughtersin-law. xxx

40th birthday remembrance of Ian McCarthy late of Knockinane West Kilcummin, whose 40th birthday occurs on the 7th of June. Put your arms around him Lord, Don’t leave him on his own, For today is Ian’s 40th birthday, And we know he can’t come home. Your resting place we visit Flowers we place with care, But no one know the heartache, As we turn and leave you there. Your special day I cannot share, My gift to you must be a prayer, With a broken heart I whisper low, Happy birthday Ian, I miss you so.

Nana May the winds of love blow softly, And whisper for you to hear, That we still love and miss you, As it dawns another year. Loved dearly everyday by your grandsons, granddaughters and great grandson. Anniversary Mass 11am on Sunday 5th June in the Church of the Resurrection.

Killarney Golf Club Mens

Club President Arthur Hanley and Club Captain Liam Hartnett were among the large group of Killarney members who turned out to support our “Jimmy Bruen Team” in the West Munster area final played over Tralee Links on Wednesday evening the 25th of May,

when Killarney took on Ceann Sibeal, over a very benign Tralee course. Ceann Sibeal started with the distinct advantage of playing on a links course, similar to their own home course, but it was evident from early on that the Killarney Team were not going to be intimidated in any way, and the fact that they went on to record what can only be best described as a facile victory in the finish, went on to prove that fact. The final result was 4 and a half points to one half of a point, in Killarney’s favour. Joint Team Managers, Sean Duggan, Johnny O’Connor and Tomas Barry had set out their team in a very noteworthy fashion, with the highly experienced being well interspersed with the club Youth in their team formation. Match 1 was eventually decided in Killarney’s favour on the 20th when Enda Curtayne and Michael Maher eventually prevailed against a very dogged Ceann Sibeal pairing, who were three up with 5 holes to play, and seemed to have their match in the bag, so to speak. Match 2 comprising of Peter McEnery and Darren Mulcahy went Killarney’s way by a margin of 3/1, they were almost two full holes behind match 1 when their match finished. Match 3 was easily won by Killarney with the in-form pairing of Robert Cussen and Luke Walsh winning by a margin of 5/3. Match 4 with Dermot Roche and Niall McCarthy was called in from the 16th when they were standing at 1 up. Match 5 with Father and Son, Tomas Kelliher and Ryan Kelliher winning by a margin of 3/2, they were never behind in their match, and stood at 5 up with 6 to play when the Ceann Sibeal pairing mounted a fight-back. Killarney’s “J.B. Carr Team” completed the victory, that they had laid the foundations for, when they played the “home” leg of their tie against Waterville on Friday the 27th of May, the team under the joint watchful gazes of team Managers Connie Brosnan, Nick O’Brien and Dermot Doyle, had brought a 4 to 1 lead from their “away” leg, and three of the first four matches out completed the task, with the 2nd and 4th matches finishing simultaneously. Match 1 Dermot Roche and Enda Curtayne won 8/7, match 2 Seamus O’Connor and Donal McSweeney won 5/4, match 3 Derry O’Connor and Padraig Griffin were 1 up playing the 13th, match 4 John Clifford and John Hickey won 5/4, and match 5 Con Healy and John Wall were 1 down while playing the 11th hole when their match, and match 3 were called in, as the overall victory had already been secured. Killarney’s “Pierce Purcell Team” were in action on Saturday morning, the 28th of May, when they were up against “Ring of Kerry” in the opening round of that competition which was played in Kenmare, the team was under the stewardship of Brian O’Regan, who was assisted in that task by Mikey Daly, and Brian Fitzgerald. The Club’s Pierce Purcell team had in recent years progressed well in the competition, but alas, that would not be the case, on this occasion, and they were well beaten in the finish. Match 1 Eddie McSweeney and Donie McSweeney were playing the 19th hole when their match was called in, match 2 James Collins and Jack Buckley lost 2/1, match 3 Colm O’Shea and Mairtin Driver won by a margin of 4/3, match 4 Louis Holland and Pa Fleming lost 3/2,

and match 5 Stephen Broderick and Neilus Hayes lost 5/4. Team Manager Brian O’Regan remarked afterwards that the “Ring of Kerry” team, played unbelievably good golf, and many of their teams were on level par, or just over, when the matches concluded, which belies their handicaps. Club singles stroke play competition on Mahony’s Point 29/05/2016 was won by John Lynch, with a most impressive score of 64 nett, John playing of 12 handicap, was only 4 over par gross for his round, which was played off the “blue markers”. 1st John Lynch (12) 64 2nd Robert Cussen (10) 66 3rd Peter Wickham (13) 67 4th Peter Malone (6) 68 5th Niall Huggard (11) 68 Best gross Donal Considine (2) 73 Category 2 Denis McCarthy (11) 71 Category 3 Eddie O’Sullivan (14) 68 Category 4 Nick O’Brien (19) 68 Bank Holiday Weekend the 4th and 5th of June will see the playing of the Club President’s, Arthur Hanley’s various President’s prizes, details have been previously published, and are currently being well publicised within the Clubhouse. The evening festivities are due to “kick off” at 8.00pm and Arthur is very much looking forward to a very successful weekend, and with the weather forecast being good, then it should indeed be a most memorable occasion, the Men’s Club wish President Arthur every success for this his once in a lifetime, most unforgettable event.

Congratulations to Anna O’Shea who came first in the u9 county gymnastics competition recently. Anna now goes on to represent Kerry in the national finals in Athlone in August.

Killarney Swimming Club

Well done to all our swimmers who took part in the “B” gala in Tralee recently. This was a huge swimming event with races running from 9:30 am

through to 6:30 pm and, being the last “B” gala of the current season, medals were as scarce as teeth in a hen but our squad did us proud winning far more than their fair share. Boys under 11 – Ross O’Leary was in fine form winning gold in the 200 metres Individual Medley, gold in the 100 metre butterfly and a tidy little bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke. Girls under 13 – Ellen Farndon was superb on the day, leaving the opposition in her wake with her classy tumble-turns. Deservedly, she took home gold in the 200 metres Individual Medley and silver in the 100 metres backstroke. Orlaith O’Sullivan won a truly magnificent silver medal in the 100 metres breaststroke. Well done, Orlaith. Meanwhile, in a tough, gruelling battle, Ellen O’Connor took a fantastic bronze in the 100 metres butterfly. Boys under 13 – Charles O’Brien was in great form winning every colour medal available; gold in the 100 metres breaststroke, silver in the 100 metres backstroke and bronze in the 200 metres Individual Medley! Normally this would be a fantastic haul for any club in this highly competitive age group but not for Killarney, for we had Ethan O’Neill who had nothing but medals on his mind from the moment he hit the water. Swimming in four races, Ethan took four medals – gold in the 200 Individual Medley, gold in the 100 metres backstroke, silver in the 200 metres freestyle and silver in the 100 metres breaststroke. Boys under 15 – Another man on fire was Paul O’Leary who continued on his winning ways seizing a gold medal in the 100 metres backstroke, another gold in the 100 metres breast, a silver in the 200 metres freestyle and a silver in the 200 metres Individual Medley. Girls over 16 – Emma Quirke had another great day in the water winning a well-deserved silver in the 100 metres backstroke and a second silver in the 100 metres breaststroke. Thanks to our coaches, Cathal O’Brien and Leontia Doody, who gave huge support and encouragement to all swimmers and to our team manager, Samantha O’Connor who deserves to be nominated for Sainthood at this stage. Thanks also to all parents for travelling and assisting on deck.

Killarney Celtic

Premier League Final Killarney Celtic v Dingle Bay Rovers, Mounthawk Park, Friday, June 3rd, at 7.30pm KDL Killarney Celtic are asking all our members and supporters to make a special effort to make it to Tralee on Friday night to support us against a top quality Dingle Bay Rovers to decide the title. A brilliant year comes down to this one game and hopefully the massive effort and commitment of our man-

agement and players will be rewarded – but our supporters will be absolutely vital on the night. Killarney Celtic Football For All This has been a huge week for Killarney Celtic Football For All, and it’s only getting bigger. The club has been announced as one of the top twenty sports clubs in Ireland by the Irish Times and the only soccer club to make the short-list. This Friday, June 3rd, league leaders Dundalk travel to second placed Cork City at Turners’ Cross for the most anticipated Airtricity contest of the season so far. With Killarney Celtic FFA providing the half-time game, that makes three great teams in action on the night and all our young members are eagerly looking forward to the occasion. 40th Anniversary Commemorations Our Club has a big birthday when it turns 40 this year. To help mark the occasion and to preserve our history for future Killarney Celtic generations, we will shortly be compiling a Digital Archive of club photos, news reports, memorabilia etc. That will require current and past members to rummage out whatever you might have in display cases, old biscuit tins and photo albums. We’ll be publishing more details here and via the press on the project and how you can get us your materials (and get them safely back). Club Shop Our range of Celtic gear has been updated and is now available from the club shop on Saturdays from 12 noon to 2.00pm. Contact Mary Lyne 0866485809 or Mags O’Neill on 087 6451913 for enquiries. Soccer Tots Our Soccer Tots Programme continues on Wednesdays at 7.00pm. All welcome. Results Greyhound Bar Semi-Final: Killarney Celtic 1 St. Brendans Park 0 Celtic were on top but couldn’t break through until the 70th minute, when a typically adroit Gary Keane finish gave us the win. This was a tough game against a very good side, and Celtic are now in with a chance – note, only a chance! – of a cup and league double. Jimmy Falvey Youths Cup Final: Castlemaine United 1 Killarney Celtic 6 Celtic were in determined mood here and goals from Stephen McCarthy (2), Cathal O’Shea, David Spillane, Oran O’Donoghue, and Conor McCarthy sealed a convincing win. Like our senior, our Youths now have a chance of a Jimmy Falvey Cup and League double, facing Fenit in both finals after the Leaving Cert. U15 Premier: St. Brendans Park 5 Killarney Celtic 2 Darragh Lyne and Ryan Kelliher got our goals, but Park were in superb form and deserved to win. U14 Premier: Killarney Celtic 3 Killorglin 0 Unfortunately, Killorglin were unable to field in our last fixture, leaving Celtic as champions with 28 points, just ahead of St. Brendans Park, who pushed us hard all the way to the wire and finished with 25. Congratulations to U16 player Ryan Kelliher on making the Kerry Schoolboys/ Schoolgirls Team of the Week. Lotto Numbers drawn 6, 10, 11, 16. No winner. Next week’s jackpot €6200, draw in the Failte on Monday night. Tickets available from all club officers. Yearly

The crunch game was against a physically strong Ardfert team and despite being 4 points down at the short whistle, our boys stayed true to their colours, displaying great movement of the ball, fast by foot and with some great support play ended the game leading by 7 points. This was a fantastic team performance, noting that this is the third year in a row that Firies have qualified for Munster finals. On Tuesday afternoon the Hurling Skills Competition took place for the Killarney and Rathmore area schools. Twenty one pupils, both boys and girls took part in the competition, the largest number that has ever taken part in the skills competition in this area. There is great credit due to the clubs of Dr Crokes, St Pats East Kerry, Killarney Camogie and Rathmore for the brilliant work they are doing in coaching these children the skills of hurling. Fossa

Lotto 29th May 2016 Numbers drawn were 1, 13, 15, 18. There was no jackpot winner. Next weeks jackpot will be €7,800. Tickets are on sale at The Golden Nugget Bar, The Castlerosse Leisure Centre, The Travel Inn, The Old Killarney Inn, Foley’s Spar Shop, The Laurels Bar and Committee members. Seniors Our seniors were away to Castlegregory on Saturday evening in the Junior Championship quarter final. Fossa were comfortable winners on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-11. This now leaves Fossa in a semifinal with the draw due to be made later in the week. They turn their attentions to the County league for now when they play Firies in Fossa on Saturday evening, 4th June at 7pm. Ladies Football Fossa U12 girls started off their county league campaign with a home win over Currow running out comfortable winners in the end after an encouraging display. Next up was an away trip to Kerins O’Rahillys where after a slow start they gained a formidable lead going into the last quarter. Rahillys came back into the game but the Fossa girls dug deep to pick off some impressive points to record a good win. Two wins out of two so loads to look forward to. Next up is Scartaglin at home next Tuesday night. Kerry U-14 Congrats and well done to Fossa’s Maud Kelly & Sara Sheehan and all the Kerry U-14 panel who has a great win over Tipperary in the Munster Final on Saturday in Mallow. Well done girls. Boys U12 County League Div 1A and 1B The U-12 teams welcomed Ballymac to town on Sunday evening and had mixed fortunes on the field. The U-12 black team found the Ballymac defence too strong and failed to convert their chances. At this level it is hard to win if we don’t do so. Dean Sheehan, Cian Doyle, Peader Kelliher and Rian Colleran all did well. Robert Brooks had a great game marking their star forward. It was another learning experience for the boys who actually finished the

game on the front foot. The U-12 red team were very evenly matched with Ballymac and the game turned out to be a cracker. Down by 2 points starting the second half, Fossa eventually got to grips with the game with Tom Cahillane scoring the vital goal to eventually see off the Ballymac challenge. Daire O’Brien dominated at centre back, Ted O’Gorman seemed to be every where, Scott Carlton impressed in the full back line, Rocco Sheehan played the captains role with style and Luke and Abby Murphy were their usual electric selves. That’s three wins on the bounce for this team... Keep up the good work everybody. Congrats Congrats to Eoin and Colm Talbot, Naoise Buckley and team trainer, Dan McKenna who were part of the Milltown Presentation School team which won the Brendan O’ Shea Cup in the Kerry County College Final against Kenmare during the week. Kits for Kids Dalys Supervalu have nominated Fossa to be one of the clubs to be in with a chance to receive an O’ Neill’s GAA training kit through the Kits for Kids Initiative. Clubs must collect 2000 vouchers over a period of 8 weeks starting Thursday 12th May. Customers will receive one voucher every time they spend €40 or more. Can everyone please remember to collect the vouchers in store and place them in the Fossa nominated box behind the checkouts, thanks. Fossa Notes: If anybody has any item they would like included in the notes, please email information to John O’Neill at pro.fossa.kerry@gaa. ie. Please forward information before Sunday at 11am.

Legion

LEGION V GNEEVEGUILLA (SUPER LEAGUE) A strong opening which yielded a Conor Culloty goal saw Legion take a lead they would never relinquish. Strong running and work by Billy Maguire and Kevin Breen was the groundwork for a half which saw the forwards rack up 2-8 by half time, Derek Twomey slotting home the second goal. Denis

Sheahan too was very industrious when he was switched out to the middle third with Colm Ó Cuív making his first senior start. The second saw Gneeveguilla add 1-4 to their 1-5 half time total as Sean McCarthy stole up to score a fine point. The introduction of Finbarr Murphy sparked a productive period as some nice link up play saw Billy McGuire crash home two goals. The pace of the game dropped in the midday sun and Legion duly qualified for the Super League final by virtue of 4-9 to 2-9 victory. DRAW Legion have been drawn to play Kerins O’Rahillys in the 3rd round of the County Championship. The tie will be played the weekend of July 10th. Venue TBD. JUNIORS The juniors suffered their first defeat of the year against Gneeveguilla last Tuesday but still qualified for the semi-final of the East Kerry League where they’ll play Dr Crokes. KERRY U-14 LADIES Congratulations to Tara Murphy and mentor John Doona who were part of the Kerry ladies team who defeated Tipperary in the Munster final on Saturday. DISCO As part of our ongoing programme for the upcoming Féile we are having a retro disco in McSorleys on Friday, June 17th. All proceeds from the disco will go towards hosting and the needs of the boys and girls U-14 teams. Tickets will be available from members of both teams or any club officer. GARDA VETTING Under the National Vetting Act no person will be allowed to undertake any GAA activity with juveniles without being vetted by the Garda Síochána. It will be deemed to be an offence under the terms of the GAA and the law nationally. The GAA has recently launched a new electronic vetting system which replaces the original paper system. The new e-vetting system is aimed at being a more efficient and streamlined way of being vetted. Our children’s officer Christina Tangney is on hand to assist anyone not vetted

with the new system. The immediate goal of the GAA is to get everyone involved in the Association who is not vetted sorted with immediate effect. Those previously vetted under the old system may then be asked to go through the new process. The club wants to ensure that everyone is vetted in due course. Anyone who needs more information or assistance can contact Christina via email at christina.tangney@mycit.ie or alternatively at 086 1925549. BAZAAR A reminder that the club are hosting a bazaar on Saturday, June 4th at 12 noon. We’re looking for donations of any saleable items, e.g. unwanted gifts, kitchen utensils, candles, photo frames, books, CDs, DVDs, jewellery, games, sports accessories, ornaments, bikes. No clothes please. You can drop items to the clubhouse on Saturday mornings or alternatively contact either Denise (087 8342006) or Carolann (086 1709322) to arrange a drop off. LOTTO If you’re interested in selling some lotto tickets to help raise vital funds for the club, please contact Seánie Culloty at 087 2225325. Also if you’d like to avail of our Easy Pay system to automatically enter your lotto numbers every week, forms are available from Seánie, Maura McCarthy, Paul Trant, Dan Murphy, Kevin Griffin or any lotto committee member.
