Lotte Lyne has set up the Stephen Lyne Foundation.

"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

‘We want to make a positive impact in memory of Stephen’ THE mother of a Killarney teenager who was fatally stabbed has set up a foundation in his memory. As Lotte Lyne unveiled details of the eponymous Stephen Lyne Foundation this week, she said she believes it is something of which Stephen would have been proud. Lotte hopes that the foundation, which involves a new school programme, will significantly reduce bullying and anti-social behaviour in young people. Tragically, Stephen was killed, close to his family home, seven years ago. “The story of the Stephen Lyne Foundation begins in June 2009 with a phone call no parent ever wants to receive,” said Lotte. “It is an unimaginable heartbreak I would wish for no one.” Now, the Stephen Lyne Foundation aims to raise €20,000 to introduce a programme into three Killarney primary schools this September. “Rather than focus on the loss of Stephen, I choose to concentrate on what I can do to prevent another family from going through what we have had to go through and are still going through,” said Lotte. “The Roots of Empathy programme teaches

Lotte spreads a message of hope SEVEN years ago Lotte Lyne received a telephone call that is the stuff of nightmares when she was informed her son Stephen was killed just yards from the family home. This week, the generous-spirited Killarney woman is looking to the future and seeking to help other families by setting up a foundation in Stephen’s memory. Here’s hoping the community will rally to the call and support the Stephen Lyne Foundation. In other news this week, the committee of Fitzgerald Stadium revealed plans to ensure the stadium could be a contender for hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2023. Also on a sporting theme, scenes of joy were unleashed in homes across Kerry on Wednesday night as Martin O’Neill’s boys in green defeated Italy in Euro 2016. Read all about the upcoming bumper weekend also which will unfold from July 1 as the town gets ready for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, the Munster final and the 4th of July Celebrations. Enjoy your favourite Friday read this week.

children empathy and aims to reduce violence and bullying,” Lotte told the Killarney Advertiser. “Children are taught empathy by observing a baby, who is brought into the classroom at various stages. To honour Stephen’s memory, we want to make a direct, positive impact on children in Kerry.” The Roots of Empathy programme is delivered by children’s charity Barnardos. “My goal is to raise €20,000 by this September 2016,” said Lotte. “My ultimate goal is to save a child’s life and make our community a safer place for our young people, to honour my son.” You can support the foundation at a coffee morning on Wednesday, July 6, from 10am to 12pm in The Brehon Hotel. Tickets are €10 and will be available from Monday at the reception of The Brehon and in O’Donoghue’s Pharmacy, Main Street, or contact Lotte on 086-3527606. You can also support the foundation at https://www.gofundme.com/2afetgs or http://www.stephenlynefoundation.org

Drivers endure ‘interminable delays’ at junction KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL and Transport Infrastructure Ireland have been urged to devise a traffic management system for the junction at Ballycasheen/Woodlawn Road onto the N22. Councillor Michael Gleeson raised the issue at the recent Municipal area meeting, saying an improved system would “relieve the torment of interminable delays being endured by drivers” seeking to emerge from the junction, particularly those wishing to turn right towards the Pike Hill. The council replied that the TII (formerly the National Roads Authority) has indicated that the current traffic layout from Lissivigeen Roundabout to Park Road Roundabout should be examined and a feasibility report prepared in regard to any works that are deemed necessary. The junction referred to in the motion will be examined as part of this process. A design will be completed and forwarded to the TII for its consideration. It is proposed to submit the proposal to TII before the end of this year.

Councillor Michael Gleeson.

Councillor Gleeson detailed the frustration experienced by drivers at this junction. “These are frustrations that sometimes lead to risk-taking that endangers life and limb,” he said. “I welcome the council’s reply insofar as it promises an indepth examination of the entire stretch of roadway but I ask that every effort would be made to speed up the process."

Question

I have applied for a means-tested Jobseeker’s Allowance but I was told that I’m not eligible because of my live-in partner’s earnings. We live together but we are not married and we split our expenses equally. Why is this?

Answer The Department of Social Protection (DSP) treats married and unmarried couples in the same way when assessing entitlement to a means-tested social welfare payment. It assesses the total income of the household, rather than the circumstances of the individual claimant. This means that if you are married, or are living with another person in an intimate and committed relationship, the means of your spouse or partner are also taken into account. This is the case even if only one of you is actually claiming a payment. The DSP uses detailed definitions and criteria to assess whether a couple are cohabiting and you can read these online at welfare.ie. How the means of a couple are assessed differs slightly depending on the payment being applied for. For Blind Pension, State Pension (Non-Contributory) and Carer's Allowance, the DSP adds all of your means together and then halves them to get the assessable means for each one of you. For Jobseeker's Allowance, Disability Allowance, and Farm Assist, the DSP adds all your combined means together and then assesses them against the maximum household payment for your circumstances. If your spouse or partner is getting a social welfare payment in their own right, your means are taken to be half of the total means of yourself and your spouse or partner. Sometimes a certain amount of income, or income from particular sources, is not taken into account. This is called an income disregard. For example, a certain amount of income from employment can be disregarded. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

‘Lighting urgently needed at Killarney junction’ LIGHTING is urgently needed at a major junction in Clonkeen, Killarney, to ensure safety, according to Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae. Deputy Healy-Rae is seeking funding for work to be carried out at Poulgorm Cross, which is located where the R569 Killarney-Kenmare Road meets the N22 Killarney-Cork Road. The Kerry TD is calling on Kerry County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Department of Transport to ensure lighting is provided at this junction. Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has called on Minister for Transport Shane Ross and his Department to provide funding for eight overhanging lights – four on either side of the road – to be erected where the R569 meets the N22 main Killarney-Cork Road. “Lighting is urgently needed at this area, I am getting reports of people who are now finding

14

Killarney Advertiser 24.06.16

themselves missing the cross, especially in the winter time when it is dark much earlier. It is very easy to miss the junction and for such a major junction I do believe that it is vital to have lighting here for safety,” said Deputy Healy-Rae. Also by having lighting at this area it will also encourage people to slow down as they are coming down the county bounds or coming from Killarney, said Deputy Healy-Rae. “I have called on the new Minister for Transport Shane Ross through discussions with him and by means of Parliamentary Questions to provide this much-needed funding for this work to be carried out. “Also I have raised this with Light Management of Kerry County Council as I believe this matter needs urgent attention.”

THE team at Daly’s SuperValu in Killarney saddled up along with other SuperValu stores across Kerry and Ireland to support the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. The Ring of Kerry is the largest one-day charity fundraising event in Munster and celebrated its 30th year last year. Taking place on Saturday, July 2, the event welcomes thousands of leisure cyclists from across Ireland as they embark on a 180km journey along the spectacular Ring of Kerry to raise much needed funds for worthy Kerry-based causes. Daly’s SuperValu owner Billy Daly said: “We are delighted to partner with the Ring of Kerry Cycle for 2016. Being an independent retailer, living and working in Killarney, we see at first hand the great community causes that are supported each year by the money raised and the benefit it brings to the local economy. We wish all participants and volunteers an enjoyable and safe event in 2016.” Cathal Walshe, PRO of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, added: “We’ve been working hard preparing for the 2016 edition of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and this year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet. Not alone does this event benefit worthwhile charities at a local level, but bringing over 11,000 cyclists and their supporters to the area provides a huge local economic boost.” SuperValu is on a mission to get the whole country cooking more and to build a healthier nation with its Good Food Karma Project. The aim of the campaign is to get people cooking one more meal from scratch every week along with making key lifestyle choices around what they eat. SuperValu is working with an army of foodies including celebrity chefs Kevin Dundon, Seafood chef Martin Shanahan and Sharon Hearne Smith, athletes David Gillick, Bernard Brogan and Anna Geary, The Happy Pear, Daniel Davey and Inspiring Foodies Conor Bereen, Marc Bereen, Duncan Maguire, Federico Riezzo and Ciaran McGonagle. If you are in training for the Ring of Kerry or want some inspirational recipes with mealtime tips call into your Daly’s SuperValu or visit supervalu.ie. Join the Happy Pear brothers Stephen and David for a cooking demonstration on Saturday, July 2, at the New Street Car Park, Killarney, plus meet some of the SuperValu Food Academy suppliers.

Could Fitzgerald Stadium host the Rugby World Cup in 2023?

PLANS are underway to ensure Fitzgerald Stadium is well placed as a possible host venue for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The stadium’s finance committee has launched a new development scheme in the lead-up to yet another Munster football final at the iconic Killarney venue. The new scheme, the fourth of its kind, aims to further enhance facilities at the stadium on big match days, bringing it right into contention as a host venue for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The current stadium capacity is 39,000 and it is fully compliant with all health and safety regulations. Among the proposed enhancements to the stadium are the upgrading of the terraces, especially at the scoreboard end; upgrading of the seating in the covered stand; new shops, toilet facilities and access turnstiles at the St Finan’s side of the ground; and the addition of a floodlighting system. Kerry County Board chairman Patrick O’Sullivan, who along with Kerry senior football manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Colm Foley, chairman of the Development Committee, launched the new scheme last Thursday, outlined the reasons for the launch of the latest development scheme. “We want to develop on the work ethic and commitment that has brought Fitzgerald Stadium to what it is today,” said Mr O’Sullivan. “We want to go further and have a facility that will continue to be a symbol of Killarney’s ability as a venue that will match and compete with other centres of excellence.” Mr O’Sullivan added: “It is the hope and determination of the stadium committee and the county committee to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023.” The cost of the development scheme subscription is €1,000 per year for five years and the benefits of subscribing include two free stand tickets for Kerry/ Cork Munster Championship games at the stadium as well as two free tickets for games held under the auspices of the Kerry County Committee at the stadium and two free tickets for an All-Ireland Final involving the Kerry senior team. The stadium committee, under the chairmanship of Colm Foley, includes county committee chairman Patrick O’Sullivan, Pat O’Donoghue, Maurice O’Donoghue, Michael O’Donoghue, Conor Hennigan, Mike Buckley, Der Brosnan and Andy O’Sullivan.

National recognition for Killarney Celtic Football For All THE past weekend was one of celebration for all involved in Killarney Celtic Football For All which was announced as a runner-up in the Irish Times Best Sports Club in Ireland. Jane O’Donoghue of the club spotted the competition on Facebook and decided to enter it. “We were delighted when we were contacted to say that we had what we understood was the top 20 in Munster. When the researcher came to visit us it was only then that we realised we were on the top 20 in Ireland. To say that we were delighted was an understatement,” said Jane. “Then last Saturday we were named in the top 5. We were absolutely thrilled to get in the top 20 and over the moon to be in the top 5.” The announcement that the club was a runner-up last Saturday was, added Jane, “the icing on the cake”. “Each club is unique in their own way and every club deserves recognition for the great work they all do,” said Jane. “For our team it is great. We have

very dedicated coaches and parents, amazing team of players and great supporters. It is great that we were able to highlight the benefit of the FAI Football For All club programme both locally and nationally. The publicity we have received locally and nationally is a prize in itself.” The programme is run through a mainstream soccer club and caters for children with intellectual, physical and sensory needs, said Jane. “The programme is well worth been involved in. I myself have two girls with Dyspraxia who are on the team and my two older girls are junior trainers. I co-ordinate the programme in our club along with Amelia Tucker. Both our husbands, John (Don) O’Donoghue and Denis Tucker, are head coaches. Over half our coaches are either parents of children on our team or older siblings,” said Jane. “Our other coaches then have no connection with the players but really enjoy training the players.”

LOCALS and visitors alike will be pleased to know of plans for the gardens of Killarney House to be open on a daily basis from July 10. Fine Gael Senator and Leas-Cathaoirleach Paul Coghlan has received clarification from the Minister for Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, about her intentions on the future of Killarney House. Senator Coghlan tabled a commencement debate on the issue of Killarney House in the Seanad. “I am very pleased that Minister Humphreys has provided a full update and clarification about her plans for Killarney House,” said the Killarney senator. “The overall project is in the region of €8 million, with Fáilte Ireland providing €5.2 million and the Department providing the remainder." The House will act as the visitor and interpretative centre for Killarney National Park, added Senator Coghlan. “I was also particularly pleased to hear the Minister confirm that the history of the House, and how local people have interacted with it over the centuries, will be commemorated in the interpretative centre,” he said. “The gardens will also be open to the public on a daily basis from July 10.” The refurbishment of the gardens is “possibly one of the most significant developments for the local tourism sector”, particularly since an estimated 70,000 people have visited the gardens over the last three months, noted Senator Coghlan. “In terms of the future governance and administration of the House, an operational study has been commissioned to examine its future. The Department is now examining a draft of this study, which will inform the Minister’s thinking on the future governance of the house and its gardens,” he said.

Killarney heroes save tourist’s life KILLARNEY hotel workers were hailed as heroes this week after they saved the life of an American visitor. The quick-thinking actions of Killarney Plaza Hotel duty manager Tony Goode and day porter Daniel O’Brien saved the life of a tourist who collapsed in the hotel on Monday. The man is now recovering in University Hospital Kerry. Tony was on duty when a call came to say a guest had collapsed in his room, just a half an hour after checking in to the hotel. Daniel raced to Killarney Credit Union for the nearest defibrillator. The heroic duo were supported by colleagues. All staff at the hotel are trained in first aid and by coincidence Killarney Cardiac Response Unit was holding a meeting at the Killarney Plaza and their on-call volunteers and local members were also on hand to assist.

Going for gold on the double THERE were double celebrations at Killarney School of Music on Friday as Ray O’Sullivan’s speech and drama students received their Irish Board of Speech and Drama Grade Examination Awards. Lily of Killarney Eve O’Donoghue had the honour of presenting the students with their Grade Examination Certificates at the annual event. All students were individually assessed by an Irish Board of Speech and Drama external examiner. The board director, David Meredith LISBD, paid glowing tribute to the Killarney School of Music Speech and Drama department for the extremely high level of teaching that the students enjoyed. These outstanding results paid testament to this with 13 students receiving honours, 18 students achieving first-class honours, and 10 students attaining the ultimate accolade of an IBSD distinction. These grades were amongst the highest achieved in the country from the Irish Board of Speech and Drama in 2016. Unprecedentedly, the Irish board of Speech and Drama awarded two gold medals to students of the school, in senior grad three to Julie Rose Bowell of Killorglin and in senior grade two to Saoirse Harkin of Cromane. “I am extremely proud of all my students and would like to pay tribute to their parents for the commitment and dedication shown in supporting their children by giving them the wonderful lifelong gift of speech and drama,” said ray. “The very high results gained by all the students was a great independent validation of the hard work and fun they have together, underlining my philosophy ‘learning through laughter’,” Ray added. “To have won three gold medals over the past two years is a phenomenal achievement that most schools could only dream of. “I am truly blessed with wonderful students”, Ray said. Ray will begin a new teaching term in September. Children are accepted for enrolment from 6 to 14 years of age. Further details are available from the school at on 064-6637598.

Golden moment for The Brehon’s green team

In the swing of things for magical memories AS MEMORABLE summer images go, it really doesn’t get much better than a portrait of a loved one enjoying themselves on a swing. Talented Killarney photographer Sally MacMonagle has been in keen demand in recent weeks after she got creative with her “swing shoots”, putting her own personal spin on the chocolate box staple. All ages clamoured to get in the frame and due to popular demand, Sally even found herself expanding the brief beyond the traditional children’s photographs – as well as seeing a waiting list grow and grow. “I had loads of inquiries regarding portraits with the swing!” said Sally. Boys and girls and men and women of all ages queued up to have their picture taken mid-air. “Those swing shoots certainly aren’t just for kids!” said Sally. “They proved to be suitable for family as well as children’s portraits, engagements and Communions.” Now, due to popular demand, Sally is holding her last Swing Shoot photo session this Sunday, June 26. “There is limited availability as this is the last swing photo session!” said Sally. “I am running a special offer of €55 for a 15-minute photo shoot with five fully edited images and one print of your choice.” For details, contact Sally on 087-7202252

KILLARNEY'S very own green army at The Brehon took a well-deserved bow on home turf as the hotel has been awarded a gold medal from GreenHospitality.ie for its dedication to protecting the environment. GreenHospitality.ie grants its awards to businesses that reduce energy and waste costs and implement eco-friendly policies on an ongoing basis. The gold award is the mark of best practice in environmentally responsible tourism. Only businesses that have implemented an environmental management programme that is designed to reduce their energy, water and waste footprint and emissions, whilst maintaining their quality of service achieve this award. “The team at The Brehon is fully committed to this smart approach and have made substantial reductions in their energy and water consumptions and reduced the amount of waste going to landfill,” said Maurice J Bergin, Managing Director of GreenHospitality.ie. “They engage fully with their guests and are always looking to make further improvements as they have embedded this culture within their team.” The Brehon operates a series of environmental practices across the hotel with the intention of securing a greener future. Both the staff members and hotel guests are encouraged to actively reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint through a series of everyday practices. Waste, be it refuse, water or energy, is monitored in the hotel, with major emphasis on the principle reduce, reuse, recycle. For example, each department has an energy checklist to do on each shift and staff have been trained on items such as waste segregation. “The Brehon’s green team, led by Sinead McCarthy and Tara Dolan, have worked tirelessly over the past year to improve upon and execute our environmental management system which has already significantly reduced the hotel’s carbon footprint,” saidBrian Bowler, general manager, The Brehon. “Every team member in every department contributed to improving our practices around recycling, energy consumption and communication both internally and to our customers and we look forward to making further improvements.”

Basic payment scheme THE Department of Agriculture over the course of the next week will pay the balance of the 2015 Basic Payment Scheme to farmers throughout the country who are waiting for this payment for months. The balancing payment totals €15 million. This development has been welcomed by Kerry TD Michael Healy Rae who said: "Farmers have been waiting too long for this balancing payment considering the extremely long winter of 2015/2016 and the fact that they owe a lot of money to feed suppliers and contractors and will be welcomed by every farmer who is waiting for it."

METHOD Allow the beef to cook for about two-three hours until it is warm in the centre. The beans will take up to 1.5 hours to cook so get them on early too. To cook, simply rinse the beans and place them in a large pot of water (no salt). Bring to a simmer and cook this until there is a bite to the beans. Take some of the water from the beef and bring it to the boil. Add the cabbage and cook for about two minutes. For the sauce simply add all the ingredients and season well. To serve take some beans add the to a pot with some cabbage and butter and salt and pepper. Place on the centre of a bowl; place the beef on top and then a little sauce on top.

Welcome

T

o this month’s Home & Living. We were all excited at the prospect of featuring children’s rooms in this edition. We hope to inspire you in decorating or updating rooms for you little (or big) prince or princess! My favourite from this month is the little red and flower chair from Corcoran’s Furniture & Carpets. It’s a fun way to add colour and comes at a great price, at €99. Having two boys, though, I’m drawn to the Shell bedside cabinet with tin. Also from Corcoran’s Furniture, it would work right up to the teenage years. My boys have picked the eight-ball footstool, €60, from Mylestone Interiors, which is great for gaming and neater than a chair if space is tight. Have fun decorating this summer and don’t forget a trip to Tiger for all those colourful accessories!

Something for the little ones DECORATING a baby’s room is great fun, but babies grow into toddlers in a flash, so why spend money on something you’ll have to change in a few years? But that’s not the case if you can choose carefully, as this way you can ensure the room will grow with them. You also need to think of your own comfort – as a parent you will spend a lot of time in there with your bundle of fun. First of all, choose a neutral colour. Take a look at the wonderful greys and pinks our expert paint advisers have chosen for the walls. You don’t need to fill the room. A cot is a necessity but why not get a chest of drawers instead of a changing table. Just pop a change mat on top and voila. And it saves you from having to buy a chest of drawers in the future. You can steal a chair form another room or splash out but remember it has to be comfortable for those nights the baby is wide awake at three in the morning and can’t understand why you’re not. For the fabric use classic and timeless patterns. A gingham check or denim blue stripe will see your baby’s room through to the toddler stages and maybe even into pre-teens. Have fun and use your imagination – the baby won’t mind!

Pretty in pink A GIRL’S bedroom is her sanctuary from the outside world as she grows up. But how do you future-proof it so she is not stuck in a time warp and so her room’s décor will grow with her, from Barbie to makeup! The best way to do this is to stay away from heavily themed rooms. Also, keep it simple. Choose a pretty shade of pale pink or grey as a base. Select solid furniture for the bedroom and simply add some fun, cheap accessories which can be changed as her taste changes. The bedroom opposite features a sophisticated grey with pale pink accessories and is sure to keep any little girl dreaming sweet dreams.

Decorating a boy’s bedroom DESIGNING a room for your little boy isn’t as hard as it seems. Future-proofing it could be a bit of a challenge but is also a lot of fun. As with a little girl’s room, keep it simple. For instance, when choosing your wall colour think in terms of a grey or blue background with a large poster or print. You can also feature colour from in the accent throws or pillows. It’s worth splashing out on good quality furniture with clean lines and just changing prints and accessories. As the room’s owner grows, the focus will turn to removing toy storage to make room for a desk for study. It won’t be long before you find them switching their attention from Thomas the Tank Engine to Grand Theft Auto! Orange accessories with a grey background is hugely on trend right now and sure to please your little boy of any age.

Lose a stone in a month challenge Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on a new challenge that will help you look and feel your best

FOR the entire month of July, Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is running a challenge in which customers will aim to lose up to a stone in a month. To help you on your way, you can get 12 Eurowave sessions, unlimited toning tables sessions and one Universal Contour Wrap for just €250 during July. This would normally cost €510. The Universal Contour Wrap (value €95), is ideal for inch loss and detoxes the entire body. This wrap takes up to two hours and has immediate results. It uses up to 30 bandages in a specific wrapping technique to lift and tuck the body contours. A sea clay solution is applied all over the body and has a tightening effect and detoxing effect on the body. Try it at the start of your weight-loss challenges to give you a good boost and get you started or during the

challenge to keep you on the right track. The detox process is excellent for anti cellulite as there is a strict three-day diet after each wrap. The Eurowave machine is €195 for 12 sessions, each a half-hour session. Recommended three-four days a week, it uses a faradic current to tone and tighten the muscles on the area of choice – for instance bum and thighs or the tummy and waist. There’s no point losing weight and not tightening skin. It is equal to 200 sits-up for every session. Toning tables sessions involve Pilates-based exercise. They help to lengthen and strengthen the muscles. Sessions are 40 minutes and you can have a session every day for the month of July. For more information and terms and conditions please contact 0646632966.

Benefits of yoga for children Aileen Kingerlee outlines the many benefits of teaching yoga to youngsters FIRST of all, yoga helps children .to develop body awareness and learn how to use their bodies in a healthy way. It also helps them increase strength, stability and flexibility. Not only that but yoga helps children manage stress through breathing, awareness, meditation and healthy movement. It not only helps younger participants build concentration but it increases their confidence and positive self-image. Yoga lets children feel part of a healthy, non-competitive group. Yoga is a great way for kids to develop and have fun. Yoga kids camps have the extra added benefit of being run in the beautiful

Muckross Traditional Farms. The combination of movement and breathing of yoga with the natural environment makes for a great week. To find out more about the Yoga Kids Camps in Muckross call 086-0399358.

ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS DISNEY’S Alice Through the Looking Glass is a sequel to the 2010 megahit inspired by the worlds of Lewis Carroll. Mia Wasikowska portrays this modern-day interpretation of Alice in this visual feast. It opens with a storm at sea, with Alice as the captain of a ship. The first movie saw us go down a rabbit hole and this movie brings viewers through the looking glass of the title.

Hatter's family were killed, or so he thought, by the Queen of Hearts' (Helena Bonham Carter) Jabberwocky, but then he is given hope that they may have survived the attack. He turns to Alice to help him to find out the truth. Alice must track down Time himself (Sacha Baron Cohen) and use his Chronosphere to travel back in time.

ADVICE ON RUNNING GEAR Sports shoes are probably the most important piece of fitness equipment you'll buy, so it's vital to pick the right pair. A person’s left and right foot can be as much as a half to a full size in difference. Forces on the feet can be one and a half times our body weight when walking and two to three times when running. It is crucial that your shoes fit correctly to prevent many foot conditions and alignment problems. THE RIGHT FIT Only you can tell if shoes fit. If they aren't comfortable, don't buy them! Don't plan on shoes stretching with wear, because feet spread with age. Have your feet measured every time you buy shoes. Both feet should be measured as they are often different sizes. Always buy shoes for the BIGGEST foot. Go shoe shopping late in the afternoon. Feet swell to their largest then. Size depends on shoe make and style, too. Don't insist you always wear one size if the next feels better. PERFECT PAIR To ensure that you are wearing the correct pair of runners, it is important to your gait analysed. All good sports shops offer video and gait analysis. REPLACE OLD RUNNERS Running shoes should be replaced every 300 to 500 miles. Wear and tear in runners may not be apparent to the naked eye.

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

LUKE 9:18-24: Jesus asks the disciples how people understand who he is and then asks them ‘Who do you say I am?’ How would you answer that question? What title or description would you give to describe who Jesus is for you? Jesus goes on to teach his followers that discipleship is not about fame and honour. It is about living gospel values and will involve suffering, but that suffering will be a prelude to new life. When have you found that living gospel values was indeed costly but that you were glad you had paid that price? The message of Jesus was not addressed just to his chosen twelve but ‘to all’. Perhaps you also have found that it is a fact of life that we often have to pay in effort, time or patience, to experience growth, progress and the good things in life. Can you bring specific experiences to mind? John Byrne OSA

MUSINGS

“BUT who do you say that I am?” (Luke 9:20) “Like” and “don’t like” is the language of Facebook. We post all kinds of things in the hope of a reaction. Unfortunately, some people find that their identity is wedded to this “virtual reality”. “Like” and “don’t like” dictate how a vulnerable person may feel about themselves on any given day. The number of ‘likes’ received may give a person an instant injection of the feel-good factor or even a sense of self-worth. The opposite, deflating their ego. Now, Jesus appears to be having an identity crisis of his own in this Gospel. It may seem he is fishing for “likes” to boost his ego. Nothing could be further from the truth. After time on his own, and some personal reflection, he wanted to know did anyone discover who he really was. He wanted to know had he made any difference. He had come to the realisation that what was before him was not going to be pleasant. For anyone following him the challenge wouldn’t be easy either. To blindly follow Jesus would be foolhardy. That is why the intellectual pursuit of Jesus alone is not sufficient. We must, like Peter, get to know Jesus personally. “The Truth which faith discloses is a Truth centred on an encounter with Christ, on the contemplation of His life and on the awareness of His presence,” according to Lumen Fidei. Fr Iomar Daniels

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

WHY THE WORLD MUST UPHOLD JO’S LEGACY ON WHAT should have been Jo Cox’s 42nd birthday tears flowed as tributes were paid to the slain politician. Less than a week after the Labour MP was killed, crowds came together at events across the globe to celebrate her life.

Jo’s husband Brendan spoke movingly of a woman whose popularity crossed the party lines. She would have spent her day “dashing around the streets of her home town”, he noted, campaigning to remain in the EU. Her widower battled tears as he addressed the thousands who had gathered in Trafalgar Square on Wednesday. Brendan’s remarks that Jo had come to symbolise something much bigger in our world through her commitment to tolerance and stance against extremism is something that has to be taken on board. We must also take heed of remarks made by Jo’s sister Kim Leadbeater. Speaking in Batley, West Yorkshire, the MP's hometown, where 2000 people gathered, Kim highlighted the importance of focusing on continuing the “big picture” of her sister’s work and also urged “tolerance, peace and understanding in our everyday lives”. As her colleagues in the House of Commons paid homage to Jo on Monday, with many breaking down in tears, politicians around the world put names to a statement during the creation of more compassionate societies. Even the most cynical cannot fail to be moved by Jo’s own words which have been echoed in recent days: “We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than the things that divide us”.

WHETHER THE UK EXITS THE EU OR NOT, CHANGE MUST COME There is a belief held strongly by many institutions that they will always emerge stronger from a crisis, what doesn’t kill you makes you better. It’s a belief that alienates many leaders from their people; leaders who, too often, think they know what’s best for the people. The founders of the EU sought to bring harmony and peace to Europe and though sometimes this proved problematic their belief in the union gave them strength. The EU is a work in progress and it was never the intention of the EU’s founding fathers that a nation Europe should be created instead of a nation France or a nation Germany. Jean Monnet believed that Europe has never existed, that the addition of national sovereignties in a conclave does not create an entity. Europe must genuinely be created. That was the dream. Brexit could end all this. While many would see the situation in the UK as being brought about by politicians pursuing their own agendas, the fertile ground they find was prepared by the way the EU has handled its affairs in recent times. The dream of a strong euro is no more; the continent is under siege; there is no confidence in the future as nationalism is spreading across the continent instead of the political solidarity which was promised. Brussels is seen as being out of touch and decisions made there have had unforeseen impacts. Unemployment, economic stagnation, a refugee crisis, a faltering euro, an economic policy which has divided Europe between the wealthy north and the debt-ridden south; all these things unsettle Europe and Europeans. The Germaninspired solution of austerity caused Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece to become debtors rather than equal partners. Ireland too, suffered as we took on the debts of the bond holders at the behest of our German paymasters. It appeared as if the northern countries, led by Germany, were bailing out the weaker economies but, in fact, they were saving their own bankers’ asses. 19 of the 28 countries of the EU share the euro regardless of the huge economic differences among those countries. If the UK exits the Union, sterling will fluctuate for a while, possibly making our exports to the UK more expensive and, therefore less desirable, for our biggest customer. If we had economic independence we could revalue our currency to facilitate the new situation as it may develop, but we can’t. Our fiscal hands are tied. Likewise, our foreign policy makers must adhere to the policies of Brussels even when it comes to our agricultural products being excluded from Russia, a potentially huge market. Because the EU and the US imposed sanctions on Russia, the Russians, in turn, imposed sanctions on the import of agricultural products from Europe and Irish farmers suffer. The US needs to sort this out. The US has consistently backed the creation of a large community uniting peoples who were previously apart. It was the first time in history that a great power didn’t base its foreign policy on ruling by dividing and, ' though geographically separated, we share the same DNA. Both Russia & America have the means to sway the destiny of Europe. Both are like large dogs in a very small room. Every time one of them wags its tail something falls. More often than not, it’s a part of Europe. Perhaps, we may have to think it out again. Should we return to the Empire? Should we seek an external relationship with the UK? Or should we consider joining an EU of Northern Europe and save the Mediterranean countries for the holliers!

War of words between councillors A HEATED discussion broke out between councillors at the monthly meeting of Kerry County Council this week, leading to the suspension of the meeting for 15 minutes. The cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Pat McCarthy, and CEO Moira Murrell, left the chamber as Councillors Johnny Healy-Rae, John Joe Culloty and Niall Kelleher exchanged words. Cllr Culloty had seconded a motion raised by Cllr Kelleher asking the council to acquire land from St Finan’s land bank to provide ground for a graveyard in Killarney. Cllr Kelleher called on Cllr Maura Healy-Rae to withdraw comments she made previously to the media concerning the matter. Cllr Maura Healy-Rae had raised a motion at another council meeting calling for land at St Finan’s to be transferred to the council to develop a new graveyard – if the HSE won’t give the land, she believed the council should CPO it. Afterwards she criticised fellow councillors for not supporting her, but Cllr Culloty said her motion was deemed invalid at the meeting. Cllr Culloty called on Cllr Healy Rae to issue an apology to her council colleagues. Cllr Healy Rae said she “wasn’t apologising for anything”.

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD BIN CHARGES Now that the bin charges are coming under scrutiny those who are against every charge will emerge from their long period of silence to once again defend the oppressed masses. Already the usual suspects are lining up. Someone once said that two out of every five people are against everything and that sounds about right. In spite of the protests and the perceived injustice of the water charges, more than half the people paid them. The majority is usually compliant; if it were otherwise we’d have chaos. The Cabinet has now agreed proposals brought forward by Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Simon Coveney to freeze bin charges for 12 months. While the current system will remain in place, householders will have the option to switch to the pay-by-weight system during that period. It is understood the minister also brought proposals to ensure that householders do not have to pay-by-weight for adult incontinence pads. Taoiseach Enda Kenny told the Dáíl that Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment Denis Naughten will examine the structure and manner of the waste system. This morning the Irish Waste Management Association, a trade group made up of waste contractors from across Ireland, agreed to freeze bin charges for the next year. The association, which says it manages three-quarters of all waste produced, said the agreement means that no householder disposing of the same quantities of waste will face any additional charges during that time. Over the next year, householders will also be provided with a cost comparison that will show the amount of waste they are disposing of, their current costs and the equivalent pay-by-weight charges. IWMA Secretary Conor Walsh said people needed more time to adjust to a pay-by-weight system. "We now realise that there does need to be a smooth transition and I think in offering the price freeze and hoping we all use the next 12 months very usefully to work on awareness campaigns to let people understand the benefits of pay-by-weight". In a statement, the IWMA also said its members have agreed to "provide a weight allowance to HSE patients supplied with incontinence wear to reduce their annual waste charges. "IWMA members are committed to an arrangement whereby the additional weight attributed to non-infancy incontinence wear will be collected free of charge." The companies will get a €1.5m reduction in landfill fees to offset the scheme. The waste companies will contribute the same amount to an information campaign. The campaign will be followed by a period of dual billing where customers will be informed what their pay by weight bill would be. They can opt into the system if they want. After a year, Mr Coveney said, the pay-by-weight system, which is already used by 20% of customers, will be introduced nationally only if it has public acceptance. Sinn Féin, however, has said the promise of a price freeze is not good enough. Fianna Fáil's Barry Cowen said people should not be charged more for their waste collection than they currently are. Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr Cowen said a holistic approach to this issue is needed and that the public wants to be rewarded for recycling, not penalised. AAA PBP TD Mick Barry has described the Government's handling of the issue as "a shambles". Minister Coveney said no assurances have been given to the industry in terms of what would happen once the 12-month period ends. The National Standards Authority of Ireland, meanwhile, has said it would like to reassure the public that by law, all bin-weighing equipment must be verified and sealed for accuracy. In a statement, the NSAI said inspectors will regularly check bin-weighing equipment to ensure it weighs bins accurately.

IRISH HEROES GET THE ITALIAN JOB DONE IT WAS one of the truly great days for Irish football. Emotional scenes unfolded in pubs and living rooms across Kerry and Ireland on Wednesday night - mirroring the joyous celebrations in Lille. Beating Italy in a big tournament such as Euro 2016 also had echoes of previous days. The spirit of Stuttgart, Giants Stadium and Genoa filled the air as Martin O’Neill’s men made it through to the next stage of Euro 2016. Ray Houghton dazzled with his goal in New York’s Giants Stadium in the 1994 World Cup and in similar fashion Robbie Brady went in for the kill with just minutes left in the crunch clash this week. The perfectly timed header means that Ireland will now meet the tournament hosts, and favourites, France, in Lyon on Sunday. But for now it is all about celebrating another historic victory as craic to rival Italia 90 was unleashed. Olé, olé, olé is again storming the airwaves and here’s hoping the fairy-tale continues for the Boys in Green as they face the opportunity for avenge the infamous Thierry Henry handball that sopped us qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

The theme of this year’s graduation was “Cherish All the Children of the Nation Equally”. “The voluntary management committee, staff and volunteers celebrated the graduation of ten of their children as well as the news we recently received from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs that a new model for supporting children with additional needs has been established and will be implemented from this September,” said Lorena O’Connor of the Raheen playgroup. Author and journalist Aidan O’Connor was guest of honour and presented the graduates with a token in memory of their involvement in this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade, highlighting the promise from the Proclamation that all our children are to be treated equally.

Pedestrian crossing at Fossa school KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is to carry out pedestrian and vehicle assessments at Fossa National School/community centre and the church and car park prior to the end of the school term. Raising the issue at the recent meeting of the council, Councillor Brendan Cronin asked if the council had examined his previous request for a pedestrian crossing in the area. The survey will be carried out in accordance with the Transport Infrastructure Ireland Pedestrian Crossing Specification and Guidance 2011 to determine the need for a pedestrian crossing at this location. Speed surveys will also be carried out on the approaches to determine the need for speed limit indicators. Funding can then be sought from the Transport Infrastructure Ireland following these assessments.

Footpath link at Whitebridge Manor THE design of a footpath to link Whitebridge Manor to the N22 has been completed. Councillor Brendan Cronin raised the issue at this week’s meeting of Kerry County Council asking for an update on progress on the project. The council replied that the design of this 150m footpath has been completed and the outline cost of the estimate including land acquisition is approximagely €80,000. Aghadoe Heights saddles up for cycle The team at the five-star Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa offers advice on preparing for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle BEST of luck to everyone taking part in the cycle from all of the team at Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa, especially our own Michael Cotter. The night before Ensure that you relax. A massage is a great way to relax the evening before a race, both mentally and physically. Don’t go for a long cycle! You can begin carb-loading three days before a race. Include carbohydrates in all of your meals – be mindful not to have one big bowl of pasta the night before. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they will only serve to dehydrate your body. The day of the cycle Prepare by keeping well hydrated and have a good breakfast. The best options include porridge, cereal or muesli, fruit and yoghurt or scrambled eggs on brown bread. Begin at a steady pace and never mind other participants racing past – remember that the day is long and the hills are on the second part of the course. After the cycle Taking a seaweed bath after a long cycle can help rid your body of toxins and restore the delicate chemical balance in your system. Once steamed, seaweed releases a blend of natural oils, which absorbed by the body, can relieve pain and aid detoxification. Voya ‘Lazy Days’ organic seaweed, which can be purchased from the Spa at Aghadoe Heights Hotel, offers the luxury of a seaweed bath in the comfort of your own home. Combined with Dead Sea salt, once soaked in hot water, the seaweed will naturally spring back to life and fill your pores with the essential oils needed to restore, heal and detoxify a weary body. The Spa at Aghadoe Heights has created the perfect package, specifically designed to aid the relaxation and rejuvenation of tired muscles. ‘Athlete’s Recovery’ is available throughout the summer months and is priced at €95 per person. BLINK and you might miss it FORMULA 1 witnessed its fastest-ever pit stop during the Grand Prix of Europe last weekend, a pit crew successfully changing four tyres and sending its driver back on its way in a record time in full view of the TV broadcast. Unsurprisingly it was the Williams F1 team, who have turned pit stop precision into a fine art in season 2016. Their driver, Felipe Massa, arrived in their pit box at the end of Lap 7. 1.92 seconds later, he was gone again.

The Williams team have earned a reputation for being the best in pit lane when it comes to in-race pit stops. F1 hands out an award for the fastest pit stop during each race — so far, Williams has won it at every grand prix in 2016. So impressive are their techniques that a Welsh hospital contacted them earlier this year to apply their pit stop know-how in resuscitating newborn babies.

24 Hours of Le Mans ends in tears for Toyota TEARS and jubilation marked what is arguably the world’s most difficult race – the 24 Hours of Le Mans – as Porsche stole the victory in a dramatic end to a pulsating contest with Toyota. Le Mans, the world's oldest and prestigious sports car race in the world is held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France. With Brad Pitt giving the official race start, it fittingly ended with a Hollywood finish as Porsche defended its title in dramatic fashion after Toyota relinquished the lead minutes from the end on Sunday last.

The No 5 Hybrid Toyota was poised to clinch its first Le Mans victory only to lose power and halt on the pit straight after covering 23 hours and

The No 5 Toyota of Sebastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson, and Kazuki Nakajima had a 50-second lead and looked set for victory after a ferocious 24-hour battle with Porsche when the car suddenly ground to a halt. Nakajima was able to fire the car up again but his final lap was too slow to even allow the car to be classified as a finisher.

in memoriam ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1st Anniversary Falvey

Seamus Falvey Curragh, Aghadoe, Killarney, Co. Kerry. Seamus’s wife Maria, daughter Gobnait, sons Jerry, Michael, John and Brendan, Linda, Dylan, Mattie, Lorraine, Faela and Chris wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the vast number of people who sympathised with us on the tragic loss of our precious husband, father, granddad and friend. A special word of thanks to the following: Damien who was with Seamus and who did everything within his power to help him. To the helicopter and ambulance service who reached Seamus so quickly and were so rapid in taking him to University Hospital, Tralee. To the doctor, nurses and staff and priest who were on duty in the hospital and who were so kind, thoughtful and understanding to the family. Particular thanks to Fr. Brendan Harrington, Fr. Tom Looney and their concelebrants, musicians and dear friends Nicky and Anne McAuliffe, Tim Gleeson, Cecilia Regan and Sean Treacy. To Tim O’Shea and Sons (Undertakers) in particular Michael and Gerard who were so kind and helpful in every way at another most difficult time in our lives. Above all thanks to all our wonderful neighbours and friends, Seamus’s lifelong friends both in St Brendans and UCC, his colleagues and dear friends of Presentation School, Castleisland who stood by us to help us through. Their kindness knew no bounds and is greatly appreciated by all. To all who supplied so much food, breakfasts and dinners during and after the funeral. Thanks to all who called to the house, attended the funeral and burial, sent Mass cards, enrolments, floral tributes, letters and messages of sympathy and to the Gardaí and all those who directed the traffic at the house. To Presentation School, Castleisland, Firies GAA, Fossa GAA and the East Kerry Board for guards of honour. Thanks to Michelle Cooper Galvin and Timmy Harnett. Thanks also to all who attended Seamus’s Months Mind Mass in Fossa. As it would be impossible to acknowledge individually all those who sympathised with us and supported us, please accept this as our sincere acknowledgement of your kindness and compassion. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions. The amount of people that Seamus helped and touched during his life (in particular past and present students of Presentation School, Castleisland) was evident in the vast numbers who turned out to honour and pay respect to him. It’s deep consolation to his family to know that he was held in such high esteem. Seamus’s life and the lives of his family are changed, not ended. Ni imithe uainn ach romhainn. Our many fond and happy memories of our great times together sustain us. I lionta Dé go gcastar sinn, go dtí sin, do dhá láimh a Chríost anall tharat, a Shéamuisín Dhíl. Anniversary Mass for Seamus is on Saturday June 25th at 7.30 p.m. in Fossa Church.

st. theresa St. Theresa the Little Flower, please pick me a rose from thy heavenly gardens and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to please grant me the favour I thee implore and tell him I will love him each day more and more. Amen. C.D.

novena to st. anthony O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. E.K.

Novena to the holy spirit O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. R.K.

St. Joseph head of the holy family pray for the father of this child that he and I may rear our family so that our home may be like the holy home in Nazareth. Kerry Community Games

At the weekend, the County Track and Field Athletics took place at An Riocht running track – we were treated to excellent athletics in a mixture of wonderful sunshine and rain! The opening ceremony of this event began with the parade of all areas led by the Piper Garry Stephenson – followed by the County Flag taken by Margaret Dineen (PRO – Press) and Cassandra Myers (Youth Officer), and the 41 areas with their Area Banners. The Chairperson of Kerry Community Games, Mr Sean O’Sullivan, officially opened the Games and extended a warm welcome to everyone especially the competing athletes; he also thanked all the volunteers, helpers and County Executive who give of these time to facilitate the running of this big event. He gave a special thanks to the main sponsor Denny who has given support to Kerry Community Games for many years. He also thanked the Community Games Organising Committee, Volunteers and Helpers for their commitment and effort to making this event a continued success and wished all participant the very best of luck. At the opening ceremony, Sarah Leahy (Killarney South) carried the flame and Danny Greaney (Blennerville/ Ballyard) gave a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. Rebecca Falvey (Abbeydorney/Flynn) and Caoimhe Harte (Duagh/Lyrea) recited the Community Games Pledge in English and Irish. The first race was started and so began two days of great activity. This is a great sporting occasion for all children in Kerry with over 2,000 children taking part – these children have got through their own local competition and have come to Cas-

tleisland and competed against the best in Kerry. The County Track & Field is our major stand-out event of the Community Games calendar and surely no-one could have been disappointed this year with the great competition we were treated to with competitors from many of the 41 areas qualifying for the semi-finals on Sunday. We would like to say well done to all the children who took part and represented their towns, villages and areas so well – very child who took part should be proud of themselves and we hope to see many of them back competing in Castleisland next year. All results are available online at www.kerrycommunitygames.ie. We would like to thank our sponsor for the last fifteen consecutive years and Mr Frank Hayes for his encouragement and support of this great sporting event which continues to grow. We would also like to thank An Riocht – it is a wonderful opportunity for children to compete in this wonderful track, and also many thanks to all our organisers, officials, co-ordinators, helpers, volunteers, parents and most importantly the children for making this such a special event. Killarney South Community Games

Well done to all the participants who competed for the Killarney South area in the recent County Finals. Attention now turns to the All-Ireland Finals in Athlone in August. We have Lily Foley solo singing and Pia Hickey swimming who both competed last year and hopes are high that they can capture medals in their events this year. We have Jack Greaney competing in the U14 hurdles and with his excellent hurdling technique should do well in Athlone. We also have Emma O’Sullivan who won the county U10 hurdles after finishing second last year and Emma also should do well in Athlone. Alex Hennigan, having won Gold with the Kerry mixed distance U12 Relay team, return to defend their title this year and we wish him well in Athlone. Hopes are high that the boys’ Relay U12 4 x 100 metre Squad, having reached the final last year, can do very well again this year. The Squad consists of Teddy Muldoon, Karl McCarthy, Connor Gammell, Alex Hennigan, Daire Looney and Karl McCarthy. Teddy, Alex and Connor already captured a medal in the U10 mixed relay 2 years ago. Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett was fearful that this week’s report would not contain much by way of good news about the Club teams who were representing us over the recent week, our team in the “Jimmy Carroll” competition at Ballykisteen finished in third place, and with only the top two teams progressing then we narrowly lost out by two points from making further progress in this competition in which we made the national finals in 2015. The Club’s team in the national mixed foursome’s competition failed in the first round against Doneraile at Beaufort Golf Club, going down by a margin

of 3 matches to 2. The good news came from the Men’s Clubs team in the Munster quarterfinal in the “J.B. Carr Diamond plate” competition when the team were up against Ennis, at Ennis, in the away leg of their tie against that Club, who were firm favourites to win on “home soil” which was played on Monday the 20th June. Killarney took a very slender lead to the tie of 3 matches to 2, from the tie played in Killarney and knew that they were really up against it as Ennis were the National Champions in recent years in this competition, with mostly the same team that Killarney now faced. By the time that the 5th match had left the 6th green it was becoming evident that a very distinct pattern was emerging with Killarney well down in the 2nd and 3rd matches and up in the 4th and 5th matches with the 1st match being allsquare, it seemed that the 1st match was going to be the “crunch” match, and that pattern remained in place until almost the end of the day. Derry O’Connor with new partner Brian Fitzgerald in the 1st match stood at 2 down with 4 holes to play when they rolled off a blistering 4 pars in a row run, to win their match in a nail-biting finish with a 1 hole win on the home green, they played fantastic golf. 2nd match with the Killarney pairing of Dermot Roche and Enda Curtayne being beaten by a margin of 5/3 when losing their match, a rare occurrence for them as they are normally the “banker” pairing for the team. 3rd match with John Hickey and John Clifford who were in trouble from the early stages eventually lost be a margin of 5/4, their opponents were level par for the 14 holes they played. 4th Match with Con Healy and John Wall eventually won by a margin of 3/2 but they were 4 up at one stage when the Ennis pairing produced a great fight-back, but they eventually succumbed to the great golf being played by the Killarney pair. 5th match with Sheamie O’Connor and Donie McSweeney were 4 up well

into the 2nd nine when the Ennis pair mounted a tremendous fight back to level the match on the 17th tee, but the Killarney pair had the luxury of being able to three putt to win the hole after being on the green in 2 shots, they eventually won their match with a great par on the 18th green to win by a margin of 2 holes. Final result on the day was Killarney 3, Ennis 2, and the overall result was Killarney 6 matches to Ennis’s 4 matches. The team will now go on to contest the Munster semi-final against Raffeen Creek from Ringaskiddy in Co. Cork, when team managers Connie Brosnan, Nick O’Brien and Dermot Doyle will be hoping to bring their charges to the next stage in the competition. The Club’s Junior and Intermediate Scratch Cup’s were played on Mahony’s Point course on Saturday the 18th of June, and both competitions attracted large entries and the results in the Junior Cup showed a mixture of Experience overcoming youth when Finbarr O’Mahony edging out the ever improving Luke Walsh on the back nine with both finishing with very impressive gross 75s they were also joined by Garreth O’Donnell on the same score, and finished in that order for 1st 2nd and 3rd place, best nett was Brian Looney on 71 nett, off 6 handicap. The Intermediate Scratch Cup was won by young Ryan Kelliher, with a gross 80, Jamie McCarthy was 2nd with 81, and 3rd was Michael O’Neill Jnr on 82, best nett was Billy O’Connor with 69 nett off 15 handicap. The “away day” at Kenmare on Sunday the 19th of June was abandoned when rain started to flood the greens there, it is hoped to re-arrange the fixture later in the year. The Club’s Senior team will be in action next Saturday when the team under the watchful eye of team manager Sheamie O’Connor will be playing on Killeen, and are currently in training for their opening tie. The competition on Sunday the 27th will be a singles competition on Killeen.

WE JUST couldn’t resist sharing this glimpse of the panoramic view enjoyed by Killarney newlyweds Joanne Murphy and Pat Sheehan on their big day. When he first met Joanne, Pat promised he would bring her up Mangerton Mountain. Little did she

know that he would be delivering on his promise, in unique fashion, on their wedding day. Pat organised a surprise helicopter trip to whisk his bride to the summit of the landmark Killarney peak after they exchanged wedding vows in Barradubh Church on Friday. The

couple thanked Dermot Healy for facilitating the helicopter trip and photographer Pauline Dennigan who captured the moment they arrived at the summit, as well as the rest of their wedding celebrations, on camera. After they landed, the happy

couple were still walking on air as they re-joined their guests for the reception, at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Pat, from Crosstown, Glenflesk, and Joanne, from Barradubh, were wed in a ceremony led by Fr Bill Radley.

Dr Crokes

County League Division 1 - 6th Round Dr Crokes 0-13 Kerins O’Rahillys 0-9 In this game, played in the Kerins O’Rahillys field we ran out winners by four points, 0-13 to 0-9. Division 4 Dr Crokes v Skellig Rangers Despite acquitting ourselves well we went down by eight points to our South Kerry opponents Skellig Rangers. This leaves us with five points after six games. It also means that we have to win at least two more games to avoid relegation, promotion would not be impossible if we could win our remaining five games. Crokes u14 Girls The squad made amends for last years County League final defeat at the same venue by returning to Fossa on Sunday 19th June and this time taking home the spoils. Beaufort provided the opposition this time and following a superb semifinal victory against neighbours Spa the previous Wednesday, the girls were determined to deliver a performance in the final. Lead by the energetic performance of captain Julie Delaney, all 23 squad members took to the field at some stage and contributed to the victory. Defensively we were strong conceding only 8 scores over the 2 games while in attack we registered 31 scores in the two victories. We now look forward to participating and enjoying Feile 2016 next weekend. Thanks to all the parents and club members for their support on the night. COUNTY LEAGUE Our seniors were defeated by Castleisland on Saturday in Derreen. A fortuitous early goal and two more just before half time were our undoing and, despite a spirited second half comeback, Desmonds held on for the win. Final score: Legion 0-15 Castleisland Desmonds 3-8. JUNIORS The juniors had a comprehensive win over Kilcummin in the opening round of the O’Sullivan Cup. They will face Listry in the next round (date and venue TBD). JUVENILE Both U-12 boys teams travelled to Firies and came away with great wins. It was a good way to round off their County League campaigns and players would have learned a lot from playing. The U-12 girls travelled to Derrynane to play Southern Gaels and came away victorious on a 5-4 to 0-4 scoreline. With one game to go against Annascaul in Derreen this Tuesday they are firmly in contention for a place in the semi-finals. PRIMARY GAME Well done to Darragh Fleming who played in the Primary Game at half time in the Munster Semi-final between Kerry and Tipperary and best of luck to Kerriann Hanrahan who has been selected to play in the girls Primary Game during the Munster Final on July 3rd. SUMMER CAMP The club summer camp will run again this year from Tuesday, August 2nd to Friday, August 5th. The camp is always a great week of activity with great assistance as always from the club’s older juvenile boys and girls. Anyone interested in helping out with camp can contact Enda. GARDA VETTING Under the National Vetting Act no person will be allowed to undertake any GAA activity with juveniles without being vetted by the Garda Síochána. It will be deemed to be an offence under the terms of the GAA and the law nationally. The GAA has recently launched a new electronic vetting system which replaces the original paper system. The new e-vetting system is aimed at being a more efficient and streamlined way of being vetted. Our children’s officer Christina Tangney is on hand to assist anyone not vetted with the new system. The immediate goal of the GAA is to get everyone involved in the Association who is not vetted sorted with immediate effect. Those previously vetted under the old system may then be asked to go through the new process. The club wants to ensure that everyone is vetted in due course. Anyone who needs more information or assistance can contact Christina via email at christina.tangney@mycit.ie or alternatively at 086 1925549.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Development in campaign to ban hare coursing in Ireland A BILL to ban the cruel so-called “sport” of hare coursing was debated in the Dáil on Thursday, June 23, and will be voted on next week. The Bill was officially launched by its sponsor, Independent Dublin Central TD Maureen O’Sullivan, at a special press conference on Tuesday. Deputy O’Sullivan hopes to win cross-party support for the Bill. If passed, it would end the horrific practice whereby wild hares are captured by coursing clubs and forced to run from pairs of greyhounds. The Bill is the first such challenge to the legality of hare coursing in Ireland since the late Deputy Tony Gregory introduced a similar Bill in 1993. That Bill was heavily defeated when Fine Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour applied the whips compelling their TDs to vote against it. This time, Deputy O’Sullivan is hopeful that all parties will allow a free vote on Bill. If this happens, it could pass, ending one of the vilest forms of organized animal cruelty ever devised by man. Every year thousands of hares are snatched from the countryside, held in captivity for several weeks, and then taken to wire-enclosed fields or racecourses. On coursing day, every hare has to run for its life. Though muzzled, the dogs can maul the animals, or strike them at high speed, inflicting agonizing injuries. Hares have their bones broken as the dogs crush their bodies or toss them into the air like rag dolls. Even hares that seemingly escape unscathed, showing no physical signs of injury, can die afterwards of stress-related ailments

brought on by the weeks of unnatural captivity and the terror of the contrived chase. Evidence of the failure of muzzling and other pathetic “regulations” to protect hares and allegedly end the cruelty of hare coursing is overwhelming. Since rangers from the National Parks and Wildlife (NPWS) service began to monitor a small number of coursing events each season, their reports clearly demonstrate that the hares continue to be subjected to an appalling ordeal in coursing. In 1993 a Bill proposed by the late Deputy Tony Gregory to protect hares from this “sport” was defeated when the party whips were applied to block its passage. Hopefully on this occasion a free vote will be allowed by all parties and Dáil Éireann will give the thumbs-up to the gentle Irish Hare, a treasured part of Ireland’s wildlife heritage. This wonderful creature belongs to all of us and should not be the preserve of a heartless minority. Hare coursing, along other bloodsports, was banned in Britain in 2004 and, coincidentally, one of the foremost opponents of such activities in recent years was Labour MP Jo Cox, who was murdered last week in Bristol by a right wing extremist. On bloodsport she said: “It is impossible to comprehend why a very small number of people still want to torture animals in this way.” JJohn Fitzgerald, Campaign for the Abolition of Cruel Sports, Via email

THE Friends of University Hospital Kerry are fundraising for equipment for the hospital. The annual greyhound meeting has raised well over €1 million since 1990. The generosity of the people of Kerry has provided much-needed equipment for the hospital. This year the money will be used to buy a specialised ultrasound machine for use in the Obstetrics Department. This will allow close monitoring of the foetus to ensure a healthy baby is born. This year’s meeting will be held on Friday, July 8, in the Greyhound Track in Tralee. If you would like to donate to the fund you can do so in a number of ways. You can place an advertisement in the Race Programme (quarter page €25; half page €50, full page €100); nominating a dog (€20 per dog). Nominators gain entry to the track, are listed in the race programme and enter a draw for €300. You can also buy a ticket (or tickets) for the meeting at €5 each and enter a draw (first prize, €300, second prize €100), you can make a direct donation. We hope you can help in some way. You can contact us at 087-6676817. Michael O'Mahony, Friends of Kerry University Hospital committee, East End, Rathmore
