Killarney to get a close shave in aid of Amy
FROM fire fighters to postmen and from footballers to hurlers – a whole host of bighearted Killarney folk will be out in force on Friday, July 22, in a bid to generate funds to help Killarney youngster Amy O’Connor. Shave for Amy is the title of an event taking place on that date in the K-Town Bar on Beech Road. The fundraiser has been organised to help Amy, nine, daughter of Brendan and Triona and sister to Cian, who is suffering from a serious illness and is travelling regularly to Dublin for treatment. “We, the neighbours, friends, work and sporting colleagues, want to help with the financial burden this can cause for the family,” said Martin O’Grady of Killarney Fire Service on behalf of the organisers. “There will be a charity auction and a number of people from each group will be shaving their heads or faces.” The event, which is held in association with Kerry Fire & Rescue, An Post, Dr Crokes GAA Club, K-Town Bar, Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty and White Bridge Manor Residents, will start at 8pm and tickets are priced at €10. “We have also opened a Credit Union account if anyone wants to donate,” added Martin. Enterprise Rent-A-Car opens in Killarney FAIR enough, July is always a pretty colourful month in Killarney but the last few days have seen a proper carnival atmosphere unfold. It can be hard to stroll from one end of town to the next at certain times of the day – but in a good way, with distractions and music on every corner and a summertime buzz in the air. The past week was a dizzy whirl of excitement, dazzling us with everything from wedding proposals trackside during Killarney Races to the chic crowds that turned heads yesterday as they stepped it out down Ross Road to the racecourse for ladies day. Of course, local lady Eileen O’Cal-
laghan also had her moment in the spotlight at the July racing festival. The fact that she turned 80 on the same day as the course itself was a real cause for celebration. Earlier in the week, Killarney Regatta had the last laugh when the weather tried to play spoilsport. The determined organisers simply moved the event from the traditional Sunday to Monday and it was a case of all’s well that ends well. See our coverage on page 48-49, including the coronation of the regatta queen and the tale of how a mum and daughter almost caused divided loyalties in Lianne Cook, area manager, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, part of Enterprise Holdings, the world’s one household as they took up largest vehicle rental company, which officially opened a new satellite location in Killarney oars for rivalling clubs! this week. DUGGAN DOMINATES NICKY GRIST STAGES RALLY
Johnny Hickey, Killarney & District Motor Club, reports on local driver Robert Duggan’s success in Wales A DOMINANT display by Killarney’s Robert Duggan saw him take his third win of the series on a very challenging Nicky Grist Stages Rally. Undoubtedly the toughest event on the rally calendar, the rally provides a unique challenge with the stages of the opening day taking place on gravel before the cars are changed to tarmac specification for the second day. The crew faced the harsh elements of the Welsh countryside throughout the event including thundershowers rain, thick fog and shinny tar. Robert, 23, is Ireland’s Young Rally Driver of the Year and current DMACK Junior British Rally Championship leader. Despite still being somewhat of a gravel novice, he produced a stunning performance on Saturday's wet, gravel stages in his R2 Vauxhall Adam to take an overnight lead of over 25 seconds from championship rival Sindre Furuseth of Norway. With the second day taking place on tarmac, Duggan immediately felt at home on his favoured surface and despite the fearsome reputation of the fast, flowing roads of the Epynt military ranges he managed his lead in impeccable fashion. Behind Rob, his teammate Mattias Adielsson reeled in Furuseth to take second but at the end of the event it was Duggan and co-driver Ger Conway who took the spoils by over half a minute, taking their third junior win from four events. The result now means that Duggan has a 25 point lead in the championship with his double points joker still in hand. Speaking after the event a very pleased Rob commented; "This was one of our best performances in the championship to date and I'm delighted with the result. We pushed very hard on the opening day on the gravel on Saturday and managed our lead on the Sunday. Vauxhall Motorsport UK gave us a fantastic car and for the team to get a 1-2 on the podium was brilliant. The stages were incredibly challenging and the stages on Epynt in particular were really difficult. It's great to see the hard work myself and Ger are putting in between events is now paying off. This win leaves us in a really good position in the championship heading to the Ulster Rally next month.”

Question
I am retiring from work when I turn 66 and will be eligible for a reduced-rate State Pension (Contributory) of €198.60. My husband is getting his full State Pension (Contributory) of €233. He thinks we would be better off if he claimed for me as a qualified adult on his pension. Is he correct? If we do this, will all the money be paid to him?
Answer If your husband claims for you as a qualified adult on his pension, then his pension will consist of €233 plus an increase of €209 – a total of €442. The increase is automatically paid directly to you (although you can request that it is paid with your husband’s pension). If you decide to claim a reduced rate contributory pension then the total for you both will be €431.60. Therefore, it would appear that you are indeed better off being a qualified adult. However, there are other factors that you should take into account. While your husband’s pension is not means tested, the Increase for a Qualified Adult is means tested. This means that any income you have in your own right from employment, selfemployment, savings, investments and capital (for example, any property except your own home) is taken into account. If you have joint savings or investments with your spouse, half is taken into account. You also need to look at the tax situation. Your husband is entitled to claim a PAYE tax credit (€1,650) with his pension. Even though the Increase for a Qualified Adult is paid directly to you it is not a social welfare payment to you so you cannot claim a PAYE tax credit of €1,650. However if you claim a social welfare payment in your own right (for example, your reduced-rate pension) you can claim a full PAYE tax credit. You should analyse both options carefully and do detailed calculations, taking all the factors that affect how much you receive into account. After you do the calculations, you may find that you are better off claiming the reduced-rate contributory pension in your own right. You can get help with this from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Declan scales the roof of Ireland for ultimate accolade
CONGRATULATIONS to well-known Kerry mountaineer Declan Cunningham who was first home after successfully completing the tough Ultimate High Peaks Challenge on Saturday. Rough conditions were the order of the day as Declan and a host of other ambitious climbers set their sights on ascending 16 of the highest peaks in Ireland in one day. Kerryclimbing.ie organised Killarney's Ultimate High Peaks Challenge which took trekkers along the iconic MacGillyuddy's Reeks, also known as The Roof of Ireland. The climb was aimed at all mountain enthusiasts and saw participants trek over 25km of stunning, wild, rugged mountain terrain on 16 of Ireland’s highest summits, traversing the Gap of Dunloe and the magnificent and dramatic MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Ireland’s highest mountain range, with a total height gain of over 2450 metres. Participants self-navigated along a pre-planned marshalled route in terrain.

Chamber president Kate to sleep under the stars to shine a light on homelessness HE president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce is to shine a new light on the issue of homelessness in Ireland when she sleeps outside on the grounds of Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin on October 21. Kate is joining other business leaders to raise funds to support the vital work of Focus Ireland and their aim to end homelessness in Ireland. “Family homelessness has reached historic proportions in Ireland with more than 2100 children living in emergency homeless accommodation in Ireland often unable to get to school, rarely getting a home cooked meal and sinking into darkness,” said Kate. “No one should accept this as today’s landscape in Ireland,” added the Killarney

Toastmasters have their say in Killarney THERE was certainly no shortage of witty party pieces at the annual summer evening organised by Killarney Toastmasters in The Dromhall Hotel on Saturday. Killarney Toastmasters incoming president Debby Looney, Toastmasters district director Michael Collins and area director Gerard Mannix were among those attending, as were members of Tralee Toastmasters and West Limerick Toastmasters. Toastmasters is a worldwide voluntary organization which was set up in 1924 by Ralph Smedley, in order to help young men to learn how to speak in public and conduct meetings. “The purpose of Toastmasters has not changed much since then. Above all it strives to build a person’s confidence, through public speaking and leadership roles,” said Debby Looney. “The way confidence is built up is central to its success, we have a safe, friendly atmosphere in the club, members progress at their own pace and mentors are appointed to help new members find their feet within the club.” Debby added: “There are two ways in which Toastmasters can help build confidence, or help improve skills one might already have, there is the public speaking side of it, but there is also the leadership track. Therefore it is a suitable club for anyone to join – those looking for a social night out, as well as those who may need to give presentations at work, or those who have trouble at interviews, for example.” Killarney Toastmasters meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, at 8pm, in The Dromhall Hotel, starting again on September 13. “Guests are always welcome, and they won't be asked to speak!” said Debby. For details contact 089-418 5440 or email killarneytoastmasters@gmail.com.

Mayor highlights need for access at Tomies THE mayor of Killarney, Councillor Brendan Cronin, is calling on the National Parks and Wildlife Service to begin construction of the 1km new western access road to the Killarney National Park at Tomies, Beaufort, as a matter of urgency. Tomies Wood is very popular with walkers as it has spectacular views of the Lower Lake and is widely advertised in tourist information booklets but is currently not accessible which is causing confusion and disappointment to visitors, said Cllr Cronin. “In January 2015 the elected members of Killarney Municipal District voted in favour of a material contravention of the County Development Plan to allow this access road proceed,” said Cllr Cronin. “An Bord Pleannala rejected third party appeals and upheld the council's decision granting permission. It is now time for the NPWS to construct this access road into our National Park so that the general public and tourist can once again enjoy the natural beauty of Tomies Wood and O'Sullivan Cascade.” He pledged to raise the matter at this month’s meeting of Kerry County Council. “We must highlight the importance of providing this western access to the National Park,” he added.

THE Kerry Mountain Rescue Team were called to the rescue of a hillwalker on the upper northern slopes of Cnoc na Toinne, above the Hag’s Glen in the McGillycuddy’s Reeks, on Sunday morning. The walker, a Killarney man in his mid50s, sustained serious injuries in a fall from a descent route known as the Zig-Zags (Bothar na Gíge). Conditions on the mountain were poor with heavy rain and strong winds throughout the day. KMRT treated the man for his injuries at the scene, and lowered him by stretcher to Ard na Locha where he was transferred to Kerry University Hospital by Rescue 115 Coastguard helicopter for further medical treatment. The callout concluded at approximately 4.30pm. A total of 15 KMRT personnel were involved in the rescue effort. “This is the third serious incident on this descent route in as many months. The ‘common’ descent routes from most peaks in the Reeks (particularly the popular routes around Carrantuohill) are steep and rocky, and can present significant hazards
and challenges for even the most experienced hillwalkers and climbers,” stated Colm Burke of KMRT. “The proximity of the range to the Atlantic also means that weather conditions in this area can deteriorate rapidly at any time of the year.”

THEY came bearing spades, brushes and strimmers and the hardworking team of one lady and a dozen gents undertook a major clean-up of the Muckross Road area on Monday. Members of the Killarney Tidy Towns Meitheal were out in force cutting the grass verge from the Flesk Bridge towards the Victoria House area, removing overgrowth and weeds from the wall on the jarvey path, and cleaning two vacant sites on the road. There was a good turnout of volunteers and among their numbers was the new general manger of the Cahernane House Hotel, Emer Corridan, and assistant manager Martin McGrath and staff of both the Cahernane House Hotel and The Brehon Hotel. Among the key tasks completed by the group was clearing the forecourt of the former Top Shop premises. “There was great energy and enthusiasm and a lot of work done, which has created good impression for all visitors arriving to Killarney via this key approach route,” said Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns. The Meitheal will be going out again on Monday night, meeting at the bottom of Pike Hill to finish off grass verging. “We call on all residents and businesses on that side of town to assist with this great community endeavour,” added Johnny.

MONDAY night’s opening of the four-day July festival saw Killarney Racecourse celebrate 80 years of racing. The very best of horse racing vied with a wonderful festival atmosphere as punters of all ages and from across Ireland descended on the scenic course. A special family evening, in association with A Time to Party, was a sure bet to get the festival off to a winning start as the youngest racegoers tried the bouncy castles, face painting and other activities for size. Tuesday featured the best of National Hunt and Flat racing and on Wednesday Killarney Racecourse played host to some of the 2016 Rose of Tralee contestants. Thursday, Dawn Milk Ladies Day, judged by TV presenter Lisa Cannon, was the highlight of the July Racing Festival, and as always was one of the most prestigious ladies days on the racing calendar. The festival features 28 races, generously sponsored by local, national and international businesses. There is an impressive total prize fund of over €260,000 on offer.

Killarney Races a sure bet for
Romantic Proposal
CONSIDERING his family have been attending the Killarney Races for 60 years, the July festival meeting was the perfect setting for Alan Butler’s wedding proposal. Romantic Alan got down on bended knee on Tuesday evening to pop the question to his girlfriend, Fiona Brazil. After Fiona gave the all-important yes, the delighted couple, from Carrigon-Suir, had no shortage of help celebrating at the racecourse.

London calling for Randles Hotel THE past week, as always, has seen friendships renewed as racegoers have made tracks from across the globe for their annual pilgrimage to Killarney’s July festival. Take for instance this group from London who have regarded Killarney as a home from home at this time of year for close on 20 years now. Richard Rodgers, John Salter, Frank Cambridge, Tom White and Brian and Linda Pearce – also known as The London Boys – always look forward to their visit to Randles Hotel and Killarney Races every July. “We have met many people here over the years and great friendships have been founded,” said Richard Rodgers. “It’s the people of Killarney who make this such a great place to visit. Laughter, fun and politeness in abundance are what we have always found. All this, plus our love of horseracing at the festival, make our annual trip a fixed point in the calendar.”

Richard and the group paid tribute to their hosts, in particular. “We always stay at Randles Hotel, where the welcome and service is super. We would like to express our thanks to the Randles family,” added Richard. They always make time to visit Killeen House Hotel also when in Killarney. “The dining experience and welcome from Michael and Geraldine Rosney is excellent,” said Richard. “You are in a unique part of the world here on the west coast and should be proud of what you have. Long may it continue.” Tom Randles, general manager, Randles Hotels, added: “The London Boys and many of our race regulars have become great friends down through the years and every July there are many reunions. “The banter and craic of people from many different regions and backgrounds meeting on this week make Killarney Races very special.”

She marked the occasion with family and close friends at the racecourse and presented Fran Berry and winning jockey Barry Geraghty with the Fáilte Hotel-sponsored trophy in the winners’ enclosure.

The Roses met their fans and were also on hand to present the prize to the winning connections of the aptly named Rose of Tralee International Festival Ladies Flat Race. Record crowds attended the four-day festival, which concluded yesterday, Thursday. Killarney Racecourse sales and marketing manager Bríd Lucey said: “The lead-up to the July Festival is something that we look forward to each year. CHRISTY MOORE SETS TOES TAPPING IN KILLARNEY C

Christy was playing his only Irish festival date this year when he performed on Saturday. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
‘Help free animal hostages’ THE Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is calling for a complete ban on the use of wild animals in circuses in Ireland but they seriously need our help. Animals are beaten, shocked and whipped endlessly to do painful, unnatural acts that they will never understand. Many of the animals were stolen from their mothers. These animals literally go insane. They try to cope with this mind-blowing suffering with repetitive actions like head bobbing and pacing. These behaviours are only seen in captivity. Wild circus animals all roam vast areas in the wild. In the circus they are caged most of the time in cramped filthy cages or lorries where they eat, defecate and sleep all in one place. These animals all naturally have families yet in the circus they can be constantly alone. Usually no animal act lasts more than 10 minutes yet the negative affects last the animals a lifetime! The Arts Council is using the public’s
money to fund this horrendous cruelty. Many countries have already banned circuses e.g. Greece. Also PETA are calling for a complete ban on fur farms in Ireland. Minks are also living the nightmare! Being surrounded constantly by other animals is horrifically stressful for them as minks are naturally solitary. They too go insane. They are killed at six months of age having never, never left their cage. They are thrown into a box filled with up to 70 other dead or dying mink and gassed. In other countries, such as the Netherlands, fur farming is illegal. Please, please type into Google “big stop campaign ISPCA” and sign their petition. For the PETA petition type into Google “PETA petition fur farms Ireland”. You can also complain to your local TD. When we know better we do better. An abused animal can call no one. We need to be their voices. Frances Kelleher, Killarney
Riverbank clearing in Killarney AT THE recent municipal area meeting, I asked that, as the council has recently become the riparian owner of a portion of riverbank west of the Flesk Bridge, it would do everything possible to ensure that the Flesk River can flow as freely as possible from the bridge towards the Killarney lakes. The council replied that this stretch of river is located in a Special Area of Conservation and that discussions are ongoing with the NPWS and Inland Fisheries in regard to what in-stream works will be allowed. Kerry County Council will carry out allowable riverbank clearing and allowable clearing works on the island during August. I welcome the positive response and hope that the work when completed will ensure reduced flood levels east of the bridge. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

Harnessing pedal power in memory of inspirational Joan
HER love for the outdoors and wonderful community spirit are among the many endearing traits popular Killarney lady Joan Herlihy will be forever remembered for. Joan Herlihy (nee Quinlan, Castleisland) sadly passed away on February 12, 2015, from cancer. “She was a great outdoors enthusiast who loved nothing better than taking to the hills and walkways of Killarney and its surrounds,” said her friend Marie Shannon. In May, Joan’s children, Laura and Paul, her husband, Dave, and their extended family and friends got on their bikes for a charity cycle in Joan’s memory. “The first aim of the cycle was to remember and pay tribute to an amazing, inspirational woman who loved to cycle,” said Marie. “The second aim of the cycle was to raise much-needed funds for the Oncology Unit in Kerry University Hospital, where Joan received excellent care and treatment over the years. Joan’s weekly treatment was delivered with great kindness, dignity and love and Joan had the height of respect for the staff in the Oncology Unit.” Last week, the fundraisers were delighted to present the proceeds of the cycle, €5000, to the unit. “We would like to thank the cyclists, sponsors and everyone involved for all their support,” added Laura Herlihy.

SOTHY’S ICE EYE FACIAL A new one-hour intense eye facial is perfect for reversing the signs of ageing around the eyes, reducing puffiness and hydrating the eye area, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio
SHAKESPEARE may have written that “the eyes are the window to the soul" but they are also the first area on the face to show signs of ageing on both men and women. How your eyes will age will depend on your constitution and genes. Those with drier skin will show signs of crows’ feet earlier, while those with thinner skin will show dark circles sooner. Eye area skin is not only different to skin on your legs or feet, it is different to the skin on the rest of your face. You should be very careful about what you put around you eye area (not even your face creams) as the skin in the eye area is so delicate it absorbs creams up to 40 times more rapidly than other areas. The new Sothys Ice eye facial starts with a cleansing ritual of the eye area including above eyebrows and
cheeks. A delicate hypoallergenic treatment, it does not contain perfume and is gentle enough for the most sensitive of skins. The dead cells are lifted off, renewing the skin and encouraging circulation. Then the anti-ageing serum is applied with the unique porcelain spoons which have been chilled in ice. The cooling effect of the 15-minute massage is amazing. The specific massage movements with the porcelain spoons reduce puffiness and promote increased hydration. This is followed with a tensor eye massage and application of either eye cream or gel. Seeing is really believing. While the impressive eye mask is taking action, your therapist will perform an amazing Indian head massage for absolute relaxation. Please call for more information or an appointment on 064-6632966.
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN EXCITEMENT is building with the roads and trails in the National Park packed with people putting in their final training sessions, for this sold-out event. Please remember that all competitors must come to The Gleneagle Hotel on Friday, July 22, to collect your race packs.
ROAD CLOSURES AND TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS Local residents, please be aware of the road closure on the N71 Killarney to Kenmare road from 6.30am to 11.30am on Saturday, July 23. Please be vigilant on the morning if you are driving in this area and take note of traffic diversions in place along the route.
RACE DAY PREPARATION As it’s less than a week to the big day, your body and mind may feel tired. This is all normal and you are not alone. Below are a few tips to help you prepare for race day.
TRAINING
Let your legs and body recover from all the training you have been doing. Some people advise not to do anything on the week leading up to the race but I think it’s better to do something like a short run or walk two-three times the week before race day.
STRETCHING Do stretching exercises or yoga to help release tightness and tension in your body. Check out our yoga stretches on our Run Killarney YouTube channel.
HYDRATION AND NUTRITION
Don’t water load the day before the race, try to drink fluids regularly throughout the week. Focus on eating a healthy diet, the week leading up to the event. Try to ensure you have a healthy balance of carbohydrates, protein and good fats. Limit your intake of sugar and don’t try out new gels or supplement if you haven’t used them before.

I, along with my fellow fashion blogger and local DJ Gavin O’Leary, had the task of judging the best-dressed ladies and gents on the night. There were so many glamorous women but Tatyana McGough was a clear winner for me. She bought her entire outfit in Killarney (skirt and top in New Look and shoes, clutch and headpiece in TK Maxx, Killarney) that very same day which just goes to show how great Killarney is for shopping and more importantly, that you can dress to impress without breaking the bank!
The first prize included a voucher from MacBees for the best-dressed lady and a voucher from Brian James for the best-dressed man. There were also a whole host of other great prizes for the runners-up donated by generous sponsors, including Kerry's Boutique, Sean Taaffe Group, Clare Hynds Physiotherapy, Who's For Shoes, Orchid Spa, Bella Donna Laser & Beauty, the Flesk Restaurant and the Speakeasy Bar. . Druid casts a spell
A TWELVE-FOOT tall druid has joined the ranks of Kerry’s tourist attractions. Welcomed to its new home this week, the aptly named Druid’s View at Molly Gallivan’s Cottage and Traditional Farm in Bonane, the imposing figure represents the first settlers in the Sheen Valley more than six thousand years ago. It is the result of an exciting collaboration between two West Cork artists, wood sculptor Anthony Cornforth and metal sculptor Peter Little. Commissioned by Kerry County Council, the piece replaces a smaller existing druid carved by Anthony in 2002, which had to be removed during recent road improvement works. The original druid was commissioned by Stephen and Frances O’Sullivan, owners of family-run Molly Gallivan’s Visitor Centre.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
LUKE 10:38-42: The two sisters symbolise the contemplative and active dimensions of life, at times difficult to balance. What wisdom have you learned through life experiences on how to strike a balance between prayer and action? Many people misunderstand hospitality. They worry and fret about decorating the house and preparing abundant food. Yet sometimes it is something else that is needed to make people feel at home, namely, to sit with guests and to listen to them speaking. What has been your experience of being a cherished guest and when have you been able to make others feel welcome and at home? We can make the same mistake in relation to people who are important to us in life: children, friends, parents, or others. We can worry and fret about doing things for them when perhaps the important thing is to give them time and to listen to them. What does your experience tell you? When it comes to welcoming God into our lives, one appropriate response is to give time listening to God’s word. When have you found time devoted to the word of God enriching for you? John Byrne OSA
MUSINGS
“MY SISTER is leaving me to do the serving all by myself,” is a famous line in Luke 10:40b. I find it easy to picture Martha in her kitchen. Every hob has a pot brewing on it, some boiling over. Every kettle is turned on. Steam fills the air, microwaves beep, smoke detectors detect trouble. Martha stands in the midst, sweat pouring out of everywhere: a living example of what happens when you take on everything and don’t seek help. It’s hard not to feel sorry for Martha, though she may have drawn her misfortune on herself. As children, her sister Mary was probably taught not to stray into the kitchen, Martha’s domain, lest she cause upset. Mary had her own unique role to play. In truth, every kitchen, every house needs a Martha and a Mary. Within each of us, also, the practical and contemplative alike need to be developed, each essential. Lord, when I am being holy and listening to you, help me not to forget how to be a Martha too. Teach me to multi-task in your vineyard, if not in your kitchen. Fr Bernard Cotter
WHICH one are you? It’s such a familiar story. Think of the last time you had friends or family over for a meal or a gathering. Were you more of a Mary or a Martha? Many of us fall more easily into one category than the other – the “host with the most” who is always up to their eyes with the cooking and catering and table clearing; or the chatterer who is happy to leave the washing up until later? The key is in Jesus’s words. He does not criticise Martha for her efforts, but rather gently rebukes her for “worrying and fretting about so many things”. She is so distracted and bogged down in her work that she has forgotten to spend time with Jesus. This is familiar territory for many of us. We are often distracted and busy. Do we make space to sit at the Lord’s feet and listen? Can we take time each day, perhaps, for a Scripture reading? Tríona Doherty

THE illustrious Muckross Rowing Club was this week celebrating an impressive 10 big wins as it successfully retained Killarney Regatta's coveted Points Cup. Weather conditions meant that the 231st annual regatta was postponed from its original date on Sunday and it got underway at Mahony’s Point, Killarney Golf Club, on Monday. Celebrations continued long into the night on Tuesday at the annual regatta dance at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. “With the 2016 annual Killarney regatta of to a rocky start on Sunday last we were glad to see the event go ahead on Monday,” said spokeswoman Linda Daly. “In recent years we have seen just five Killarney clubs race in the traditional event; however we were pleased to see the return of Commercial Rowing Club this year who snapped up second place in the novice men's race.” The enthusiastic spectators were delighted to see Fossa Rowing Club win back the senior men's title in what is always one of the most tense races of the day. “Fossa’s performances and victories showed a spirit of true grit and survival,” said Linda. “With an exceptionally difficult season they persevered and trained hard to win numerous titles on the day.” Flesk Valley triumphed in the ladies novice race and St Brendan's took second place in the same race. Workmen’s Rowing Club’s juvenile boys were successful in their race as well as its junior ladies, taking gold in the fours race later in the evening. “As we saw the 231st Killarney Regatta come to a close on Tuesday evening we saw Aoife Farrell be crowned the 2016 regatta queen,” added Linda. “We wish to thank all who were involved in making the day a huge success and to all the clubs, well done, we can look forward to next year as all clubs enjoy the celebrations.”

Mum and daughter in epic battle ONE Killarney family faced that age-old dilemma of divided loyalties as two rivalling clubs were represented in the O’Connor household. Mother and daughter Kate and Caoimhe O’Connor went head to head on Lough Leane as they rowed against one another to bring glory to their respective clubs in Killarney Regatta on Monday. Kate took the oar with Flesk Valley, competing against her daughter, Caoimhe, with Muckross.

WHY THE FURORE OVER VICTORIA’S SNAP? HAS everyone lost the plot? Over the past couple of days opprobrium rained down on Victoria Beckham who had to contend with a stern backlash after sharing a snap showing her kissing her daughter Harper on the lips. Seriously, when a mum-of-four gets slated simply over an innocent picture from her daughter’s birthday celebrations, it’s time for us all to take a step back and review matters. The cute shot was posted to Instagram on Sunday in honour of the five-yearold's birthday. "Happy Birthday baby girl," wrote the 42-year-old in the caption. "We all love you so much X @davidbeckham @ brooklynbeckham kisses from mummy X." Cue a tirade of comments from a host of busy keyboard warriors, as some of the fashion designer’s followers were not backward about coming forward to share their displeasure. But I can’t understand why the image of the former Posh Spice and her little girl Harper should provoke such negativity. One comment read: "Eww sorry I'm old fashioned it looks like they making out." Another user wrote: "A lot of kids get cold sores from their parents kissing them on the mouth." And another added: "It is strange to kiss your parents on the lips. Stop saying to other people it isn't if they think it is because guess what they aren't the only one." Thankfully, many other users defended the star, insisting that it was completely natural. "Why do people think it's so weird for someone to kiss their own child on the lips?," wrote one fan. "I guess it's only something a loving parent understands. I kiss my five-yearold daughter on the lips. Happy birthday to your little princess." Another added: "What is wrong with you people? I have two kids and I kiss them on the lips, there is nothing wrong with it." Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Honeybees under threat Honeybees across Europe are being poisoned by up to 57 different pesticides, a scientific study has found. The worrying discovery was made by a team from the National Veterinary Research Institute in Poland, who used a method more commonly used to detect pesticides in food to analyse poisoned bees for a range of substances. The method can be used to detect up to 200 different pesticides, and by investigating more than 70 honeybee poisoning incidents, they detected 57 different types, the vast majority of which are approved for use in the European Union. Tomasz Kiljanek, lead author of the study, which has been published in the Journal of Chromatography, said: "Bee health is a matter of public concern - bees are considered critically important for the environment and agriculture by pollinating more than 80 per cent of crops and wild plants in Europe." Combinations of pesticides, levels of exposure and different environments are all factors that can affect bee health. And when so many pesticides are in use, it's difficult to find out which ones are responsible for harming the bees. But finding out what pesticides are at which concentration levels in bees is vital to understanding the situation, so that measures can be taken in future to ensure their survival. Kiljanek said: "This is just the beginning of our research on the impact of pesticides on honeybee health." "Honeybee poisoning incidents are the tip of the iceberg. Even at very low levels, pesticides can weaken bees' defence systems, allowing parasites or viruses to kill the colony. Our results will help expand our knowledge about the influence of pesticides on honeybee health, and will provide important information for other researchers to better assess the risk connected with the mix of current used pesticides." Bee decline 'isn't entirely due to pesticide use - other factors, like the decline of the UK's flower-rich grassland, climate change and the spread of diseases have all taken their toll on bee populations. But when countries around the world are expecting future food security issues due to the decline of pollinating insects like bees, getting to the bottom of the pesticide problem is an important step.
Angry TDs call for Fine Gael deputy party leader James Reilly to quit JUST days after Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin called for his party leader to step aside, a number of disgruntled Deputy TDs on Wednesday called for newly appointed Fine Gael Brendan Griffin. deputy leader James Reilly to quit. The calls come after Enda Kenny gave him the prestigious job despite losing his Dáil seat in the General Election. Deputy Griffin and Carlow-Kilkenny TD John Paul urged Mr Kenny to explain how Reilly got the job. During the parliamentary party meeting in Leinster House, Mr Kenny offered to personally meet the angry TDs over a cup of coffee. Views From Kerry And Around The World Good fat, bad fat? Thirty years of official health advice urging people to adopt low-fat diets and to lower their cholesterol is having “disastrous health consequences,” a leading obesity charity has warned. “Eating fat does not make you fat,” argues a new report by the National Obesity Forum (NOF) and the Public Health Collaboration, as they demanded a major overhaul of official dietary guidelines. The report says the low-fat and low-cholesterol message, which has been official policy in the UK since 1983, was based on “flawed science” and had resulted in an increased consumption of junk food and carbohydrates. The authors call for a return to “whole foods” such as meat, fish and dairy, as well as high-fat healthy foods like avocados. The report, which has provoked a broad backlash among the scientific community, also argues that saturated fat does not cause heart disease while full fat dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, can actually protect the heart. Professor David Haslam, NOF chairman, said: “As a clinician treating patients all day every day, I quickly realised that guidelines from on high suggesting high carbohydrate, low-fat diets were the universal panacea, where deeply flawed. Current efforts have failed, the proof being that obesity levels are higher than they have ever been, and show no chance of reducing despite the best efforts of government and scientists.” Processed foods labelled “low-fat”, “lite”, “low cholesterol” should be avoided at all costs and people with Type 2 diabetes should eat a fat-rich diet rather than one based on carbohydrates, the report urges. Dr Aseem Malhotra, consultant cardiologist and member of the Public Health Collaboration, a group of medics, said dietary guidelines promoting low-fat foods “is perhaps the biggest mistake in modern medical history, resulting in devastating consequences for public health”. “Sadly this unhelpful advice continues to be perpetuated,” he said. “The current Eatwell guide from Public Health England is in my view more like a metabolic time bomb than a dietary pattern conducive for good health.” Dr Malhotra also suggested the scientific integrity of the PHE advice had been compromised by commercial interests. “We must urgently change the message to the public to reverse obesity and Type 2 diabetes,” he added. “Eat fat to get slim,” he concludes. “Don’t fear fat; fat is your friend.” Snacking between meals is one of the main causes of the current obesity crisis, the report argues, while added sugar should be avoided because it has “no nutritional value whatsoever”. Calorie counting is also a damaging red herring when it comes to controlling obesity, said the NOF report, as calories from different foods have “entirely different metabolic effects on the human body, rendering that definition useless”. Similarly, “you cannot outrun a bad diet” the authors state, citing the “incorrect” assumption among the public that the solution to obesity is to burn more calories than are consumed. “Obesity is a hormonal disorder leading to abnormal energy partitioning which cannot be solely fixed by increasing exercise,” the report says. However, scientists from a range of fields have criticised the report and questioned its evidential basis. Dr Mike Knapton, Associate Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation (BHF), said the NOF findings were “full of ideas and opinion” but could not be counted as a comprehensive review of the evidence. Professor Naveed Sattar, Professor of Metabolic Medicine at Glasgow University, said: “The report’s main headline – simply to eat more fat – is highly contentious and could have adverse public health consequences.” Meanwhile, Dr Alison Tedstone, Chief Nutritionist at Public Health England, defended the body’s latest advice. “The refresh of the Eatwell model was conducted openly using robust scientific approaches,” she said. “Advice was generated from an external reference group engaging interested stakeholders, including health voluntary and industry representatives to ensure a wide range of views were considered.”
People of Cork raise €22k in 60 minutes to send child for vital medical tests THE people of Cork pledged €22,000 in 60 minutes to send a seven-year-old girl to England for important medical tests after hearing her heart-breaking story on RedFM. Abbey Murphy has a serious bowel problem. Abbey’s grandmother Kathleen, spoke to Neil Prendeville on RedFM about the daily torment Abbey goes through because of her illness. “She has to wear nappies to school and she finds it very embarrassing.” Abbey has been very sick since she was born. At three and a half she was diagnosed with a diaphragmatic hernia which is an abnormal opening in the diaphragm that allows part of the organs from the belly to move into the chest cavity.

Dylan’s tournament is ‘a fitting tribute to his memory’ LAST Saturday friends and family pulled out all the stops to ensure the Dylan Crowley Invitational under-11 tournament was a huge success. The event, which took place in Gneeveguilla GAA grounds, was held in honour of Dylan on what would have been his 13th birthday. Dylan’s family thanked all who baked and brought refreshments on the day and all the ladies for their help with the catering on the day. “The tournament is in honour of Dylan and its success is a fitting tribute to the lovely memories we have of our precious little Dylan,” stated the organisers. They also paid tribute to Fr Kevin McNamara who travelled from his busy parish in Moyvane. “He opened the tournament with a blessing and he spoke so kindly about Dylan,” they added. “The weather was not in our favour but each game was played in a very sporting and enjoyable manner. We would like to thank the teams that participated and the mentors for their cooperation throughout the day. Many thanks to all our referees who gave of their time so generously on the day. Thanks to Aine Ni Shúilleabháin, PRO East Kerry Board, for her presence on the day and for all the photographs she took. “A special thanks to Declan Buckley who travelled from Co Clare to be with us on the day. Declan played the bagpipes prior to the finals with the children marching around the field.” The finals were very exciting, with Kilcummin edging out Rathmore in the Division 1 final. Glenflesk edged out Gneeveguilla in the Division 2 final and Firies edged out Dromtarriffe in the Division 3 final.

Make a beeline for Beaufort THE Beaufort Beekeepers will be sharing the tricks of the trade this Sunday, July 17, when they hold their annual open day at Clifford’s Apiary, Carnahone, Beaufort. The Beaufort Beekeepers welcome both members of other associations as well as anybody interested to learn more about the honeybee and beekeeping. Please bring along your family and friends as this day will be packed with lots to see and do. “On the day we will show video clips for young and old in our Beaufort Beekeepers Cinema. Our very own horticulture expert will have ‘bee-friendly’ plants to show and discuss,” said Ulrich Schraewer, of the group. There will also be different kinds of honey available for tasting or to buy and beekeepers will be able to equip themselves at the stand of Dingle Beekeeping Supplies. “We certainly have gone the extra mile and invited Ms Eleanor Attridge (FIBKA Bee Health Officer) to open some hives and to talk to us about bee diseases and show us how to identify them,” said Ulrich. He added: “For the very brave children we have arranged a number of children’s bee-suits so they get even closer to the bees under guidance of our members, if they wish.” The open day will start at 1pm and Eleanor is due to begin her demonstrations at approximately 2pm. Refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon. For any further information contact Ulrich (Secretary) on 085-1722015 or visit our website www.beaufortbeekepers.org.

RED BULL TRIES OUT THE HALO AT SILVERSTONE FOR you Formula 1 fans out there, next year’s car may look very different if the halo system gets the green light. Red Bull has become the latest team to conduct tests on the halo head protection device following trials by Ferrari. Test driver Pierre Gasly wore special eye-tracking glasses to record the movement of his line of sight whilst driving with the titanium frame mounted on his car. The data will be used to determine whether or not changes need to be made to the design to improve visibility from the cockpit. However, Gasly wasn’t convinced saying: “I don’t really like it, because for me F1 always looked like open cockpit. We’ll see.” His comments add to a growing sense that halos might not be introduced in 2017 after all, with other drivers voicing their concerns in recent days. The F1 Strategy Group and F1 Commission could vote to postpone the device’s planned introduction at the beginning of next season, although this could be countered by the FIA on safety grounds.
NO TOP GEAR CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
STICKING with the Top Gear story that has been more entertaining than the show itself, the series has delivered another blow week to the dwindling fanbase. BBC announced that it was axing the Top Gear Christmas Special in favour of putting all their resources into saving the show for 2017. This week the BBC tried to put a spin on the Chris Evans’ rebooted series of ‘Top Gear’ that faced a critical mauling and dwindling ratings in the UK. They reported that his version of the show has proved to be more successful abroad than Jeremy Clarkson’s last season as presenter. The head of BBC Worldwide has revealed ‘Top Gear’ has actually shown signs of growth globally since the last series selling into over
130 territories, which was marginal growth versus the previous season.” Time will tell on whether or not all of those 130 territories will sign up again next year after seeing their investment go down the tube in the UK. The show is a very important asset for BBC Worldwide, as it rakes in a reported £50m a year through international sales of the programme, books, DVDs, live shows and other merchandise. Next year is going to be a hard sell for the BBC particularly if the Grand Tout trio of Clarkson, May and Hammond hit it off. We will leave this story lie till next season…. and on that bombshell….

Sometimes on the phone having talked about football and the horse racing, they are the wonderful memories I will keep within my heart. My thoughts are ever with you, though you have passed away, and those who loved you dearly are thinking of you today. Silent thoughts sincere and true, from a nephew who though the world of you, no longer in my life to share but in my heart you are always there. It’s lonely here without you, I miss you more each day, for life is not the same to me since you were called away. To your resting place I visit, place flowers there with care, but no one knows the heartache when I turn and leave you there. “Our Lady of Knock, Queen of Ireland, you gave hope to your people in times of distress and comforted them in sorrow.”

1st Anniversary
In loving memory of Mary Brosnan late of Rockfield Faha Killarney who died on the 17th of July 2015. What you suffered you told but few You did not deserve what you went through. Tired and weary you made no fuss But tried so hard to stay with us. Your weary hours and days of pain Your troubled nights have passed Your ever patient, willing soul Has found sweet rest at last.
In loving memory of a Dear Husband Desmond Clarke, Coolgrean Park Killarney Co. Kerry who died on 16th July 2015. When God was making husbands as far as I can see, He made a special soulmate especially for me. He made a perfect gentleman compassionate and kind, With more love and affection than you could ever wish to find. He gave my Darling Husband a heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories only my heart can hold. He was someone I could talk to that no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with, ‘til tears ran down my face. Next time we meet will be at heaven’s door when I see you standing there, I won’t cry anymore. I will put my arms around you and kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart will fall back into place. From your loving wife Maria.

In loving memory of my Dear Dad Desmond Clarke, Coolgrean Park Killarney who died on 16th July 2015. Dad He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went on quietly working For the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few, and most of the times his worries went unspoken too. He was there a firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to When in times of stress and strife. A true friend we could turn to When times were good or bad One of the greatest blessings The man that we called Dad. From your loving son Brian.

Thursday the 14th will see two of our teams in action, with the “J.B. Carr Diamond Trophy” team in action against Raffeen Creek Golf Club in the away leg of their tie with that Club, the team under the management of Nick O’Brien, Connie Brosnan and Dermot Doyle will be carrying a handsome margin in to that event with a lead of 4 matches to 1 match, from the tie played in Killarney on the 8th of July. Match results were as follows, Match 1, Dermot Roche and Enda Curtayne won 2/1, Match 2, John Hickey and Padraig griffin won 5/4, Match 3, John Wall and Con Healy won 3/2, Match 4, Derry O’Connor and Brian Fitzgerald lost on the 19th and Match 5, Sheamie O’Connor and Donie McSweeney won 4/3. under the tutelage of Liam Healy, assisted by Brian Fitzgerald will be facing Tralee in the west Munster final on that day, the team are in training for the tie, and the team managers will have a tough task in selecting the team from the excellent panel of players that are available. The tee off time in Dooks will be 3.30 and Captain Liam is encouraging as many members as possible to go there to support the team, in this West Munster final clash against our “old enemy”, Tralee. Sunday the 17th of July will see our “Jimmy Bruen” team playing in Douglas Golf Club, where they will be facing Muskerry in the Munster semi-final, the team under the management of Sean Duggan, Johnny O’Connor and Tomas Barry are undergoing a stiff training regime which has included a number of trips to Douglas in order to familiarise themselves with that course, again it is hoped that a good number of members will travel to Douglas to support our team. Sunday the 17th will also see the playing of the Lady’s Captain’s various prize competitions, and Lady Captain Mary O’Rourke is aware that a sizeable contingent of those who would normally be laying in the Lady Captain’s prize to the Men’s Club, will be unavoidably absent in Douglas on that day. Saturday the 9th of July saw the Club Senior panel lose in the first round of the “Barton Shield”, in the tie against Tralee was played at Dooks, in atrocious weather conditions, so much so, that the Dooks Club General Manager, Maurice O’Meara gave serious consideration to closing the course earlier on in the day. The scoring from both of the Killarney pairings was good, especially on the front nine, but they were outplayed in Match 1 over the back nine holes, the results were, Match 1, Donal Considine and Ronan Kelliher were 5 down after 17 holes and although Match 2, Simon Gallivan and Eric Dunlea were 1 up after 16 holes, as the result was then a “fait accompli” the overall match was conceded. Sunday the 10th of July saw the exit of our team in the “Dr. Billy O’Sullivan Shield” in this competition Killarney
are the existing holders, the team were up against Kenmare, in Kenmare, and the results were as follows, Paddy Casey and Tony Walsh lost 2/1, Ned Brosnan and John Twomey lost 1 down, John Wall and Teddy O’Sullivan, match called in, Bernard Collins and Joe Walsh lost 7/6 and Mikey Daly and Seamus Doheny match called in. The Club’s Junior youths team were in action against Dooks in Killarney, and Killarney will take a lead of 3 and a half matches to 1 and a half matches to Dooks for the away tie which is scheduled to be played on Tuesday, the 12th of July, the Killarney results were as follows, Ryan Kelliher won 1 up, Conor Clancy won 3/2, Darren Mulcahy won 3/2, Niall McCarthy lost 2/1 and Luke Walsh halved his match, the team managers Ned Brosnan and John Curtin are hopeful that this team, which comprises of the “cream of the crop” of our youths, can progress in this competition. Sunday the 10th July, The club stableford singles competition played on Mahony’s Point course, results were as follows: 1st Rory O’Sullivan (15) 40 points, 2nd Danny O’Sullivan (19) 39 points, 3rd Marcus Treacy Jnr. KILLARNEY REGATTA 2016 What a weekend! Wild and winter-like weather forced the postponement of the 231st Killarney Regatta on Sunday for one day however Muckross spirits were undeterred for a resumption of racing on Monday. Congratulations goes to all our rowers, coaches, coxes and committee on an outstanding overall performance! The club scooped a fantastic ten race wins to defend our reign of the famed McGillicuddy Points Cup for best overall club. The race victories were Junior Ladies and Mens Sixes, Minor Ladies and Mens Sixes, Senior Ladies Six, Veteran Mens Six, Novice Mens Six, Junior Mens Six, Senior Ladies Four and Senior Mens Four. The club was second in the Juvenile Ladies Six, Veteran Ladies Six, Senior Mens Six,and Junior Ladies Fours while two thirds by Muckross B crews in both Senior Ladies Six and Four completed the tally.
The 231st Killarney Regatta came and went and not without drama. The weather Gods did not look down kindly on us and the gusting winds forcing the regatta to be run off last Monday. While people did their best to juggle the commitments of work at short notice other were less fortunate and had to endure the disappointment of missing out on the regatta. The day started off with the U16 Girls and Boys races and the proudest man on the shore had to have been Micheal O’Sullivan, whose hard work, commitment and dedication over the last year saw the Flesk Valley having 2 crews in each race. Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship His was as good a display as any I have seen in the famous stadium. Aidan O’Mahony and James Walsh also kicked some splendid scores from distance. The second game on the bill, the meeting of Kerins O’Rahillys and Killarney Legion, was being billed by many as the game of the weekend, however, it turned out to be a very one-sided affair with Rahillys racing into a nine points’ lead after just twelve minutes. The Tralee side kept the pressure on going thirteen points clear by the 51st minute before relaxing and conceding 2-4 in the final eight minutes to eventually win by just a goal, 3-12 to 2-12. So Dingle, Austin Stacks, Rathmore and Kerins O’Rahillys are through to Saturday’s quarter-final draw where they will be drawn against the quartet of Round 2A winners, Dr Crokes, Kenmare District, Mid Kerry and the reigning champions, South Kerry. Repeat pairings, such as South Kerry V Austin Stacks, will be avoided. The quarterfinal draw is live on Radio Kerry at 2.30pm. The quarterfinals are pencilled in for the weekend of October 2nd but of course dates could vary depending on Kerry’s progress in the All Ireland series and fixtures could be as early as September 11.
KERRY SENIORS AWAIT THEIR OPPONENTS IN ALL IRELAND QUARTER FINALS

FOLLOWING last weekend’s four Round 3 games, the way is clear for the quarterfinals of the Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship. Paul Geaney continued his rich vein of goal scoring form when finding the net twice as Dingle disposed of the stubborn challenge of Milltown-Castlemaine in the opening game of a double bill at Austin Stack Park on Saturday last. The final score of 2-13 to 1-11 was probably a fair reflection of a youthful Dingle side’s superiority on the day. The second game was a free flowing affair and there were certainly
no blanket defences on view as Austin Stacks outpointed opponents West Kerry by 0-21 to 1-13. On Sunday, in another double bill, this time in Fitzgerald Stadium, the footballers of Rathmore and St Kieran’s provided spectators with plenty of entertainment with the club side emerging victorious by a single point, 1-18 to 0-20 after extra time. Some of the scores in this game were a joy to behold with Philip O’Connor of Cordal and St Kieran’s in particular giving an exhibition of point scoring from long range.

Kerry’s opponents in the All-Ireland quarterfinals have been whittled down to six possible teams. The Group A qualifier teams were reduced to four last weekend and Monday’s draw resulted in Sligo being paired with Clare and Cavan playing Derry. The two winners from those qualifiers will be paired against provincial finalists Tipperary and Roscommon/Galway on the weekend of July 24th. Kerry cannot meet Tipperary should the Premier county advance to the quarterfinals as these sides have already met in the provincial final. Kerry manager, Eamonn Fitzmaurice has confirmed that Colm Cooper has damaged shoulder ligaments and the Dr Crokes man will be in a race against time to be ready for the quarterfinals. Barring a draw, the Kerry Minor footballers will know their quarterfinal opponents after Sunday next when Donegal and Derry clash in the Ulster final at Clones. Both of these sides have been impressive en route to the final and regardless of the result of course will be involved in the quarterfinals. The Junior final will be played on August 6.
Credit Union Senior Football League
It’s Round 8 of the Credit Union senior football league this coming weekend and with Round 9 pencilled in for the following weekend, we are already down to the business end of the competition with just four games remaining. In Division 1 Dr Crokes are still out in front on 13 points followed by Dingle and Templenoe on 11 points. At the bottom, Kenmare and Legion picked up their first points of the League with victories in Round 7 and above them John Mitchels are on 3 points with Kilcummin and Glenbeigh-Glencar on 4 each. This weekend, Dr Crokes travel to Glenbeigh while there is a big local derby in Templenoe where the locals take on Kenmare. The meeting of Kilcummin and John Mitchels is another important game from a relegation point of view.

Our club has grown from strength to strength in recent years and so we continually strive to maintain and develop our facilities in order to cater for all the footballing needs of our club members and those who visit our club. Our GAA Lotto has been a great source of funding for much work in our club over the past years which include the construction of our clubrooms -complete with a large meeting/function room, physio room, office, and referees room. An extensive project was undertaken a few years

on the ball back to drain the playing field -creating optimum playing conditions. This year we up graded our toilet facilities and replaced the floor on our fully equipped gym with the latest modern flooring surface. The entrance gate was another large venture where a separate entrance and exit was created . This ensures the safety of all patrons using our facilities. The rise in local population has meant we are finding it very difficult to accommodate our growing numbers on one playing pitch. Therefore, it is now our priority to try and secure a second pitch- so that the youth of our community continue to enjoy playing sport. And at the core of that expansion will be the continued funding from the support of the club Lotto. Aodhán Mac Ghearailt recently highlighted to us ‘There are very few organisations in Irish society that can unite a community like your local GAA club. It empowers individuals to become better people- proud of their inherited values, and most importantly it builds healthy relationships. The importance of a healthy social outlet should never be underestimated particularly amongst children. In an age dominated by technology and with quick entertainment only a click away it is easy to slip into unhealthy habits. Our local GAA club here in Milltown Castlemaine allows children to feel valued, respected, cared for and included. It allows them to experience success and failure and to ultimately build resilience for bigger challenges later in their lives. Not every child will have an interest in football but all children need to exercise, need to interact socially with their peers and need to involve themselves in their community building relationships and improving their own social skills along the way. A huge amount of gratitude is owed to all of those fantastic people in all our GAA communities who may never realise the positive impact their efforts are having on the youth of Ireland. Ní neart go cur le chéile.’ We would like to thank all our ticket sellers, particularly Willie Hanafin who has been our top seller throughout the years. And of course those loyal people who continue to buy tickets each week, your generosity is very much appreciated by the club. So why not try your luck.. Come along to Larkins Bar, Milltown on Friday next July 15th at 9.30 for our Lotto Anniversary celebrations. You never know, it just might be your lucky night! Graveyard Masses: Full compliments and gratitude to all those involved in the graveyard masses in both Milltown and Listry during the week. A tremendous amount of work goes into these masses -where we all come together to remember our much loved and missed family members and friends. To Fr. Kevin, Rev. Conor and your team- míle buíochas arís. Minor County Championship: Congratulations to Mid-Kerry on a wonderful hard fought victory in terrible conditions on Wednesday evening last over Firies.
