"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

PARKING IN KILLARNEY ‘AT CRISIS LEVELS’ THE shortage of parking spaces in Killarney is infuriating locals with motorists clamouring for a solution to the problem, particularly during the busy summer gone by. The chairman of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Brendan Cronin, said this week: “The parking scenario and traffic problem have reached crisis levels. “A year and a half ago elected members of the council were told by council management that a traffic management study had been commissioned. As yet there is no sign of it. It’s embarrassing at this stage.” Suggestions among councillors to relieve the situation have included implementing a park-and-ride service or the addition of a multi-storey car park to the centre of town,

added Cllr Cronin. “My own personal suggestion for the latter would be the lower car park near Tesco, on New Street,” he said. This is a sentiment echoed by Cllr Donal Grady. “People have been huffing and puffing about this matter for a long time. There is a lot of money going out of Killarney in rates. What we need is a multi-storey car park. It’s time we got a chunk of that money,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “Let’s go and do it. We could have such a car park in the New Street car park. There are so many places around town and anything is better than nothing. We are doing nothing about it at the moment.

“We cannot afford them to go down a level because we’d hit water. All you can do is go up. We could ensure it was a nice building and not grotty.” A spokesperson for Kerry County Council said: “Parking is a major issue in Killarney, particularly during the summer when Birds Funfair uses the Fair Field Car Park. A traffic study is currently being finalised for the town which includes a new parking strategy. Some initiatives carried out this summer include highlighting privately owned car parks which are accessible to the public, for instance, Killarney Outlet Centre, The Malton, Scotts Street and Penneys.”

How can we solve the parking problem? ASK anyone – parking in Killarney, especially during the summer months, is an absolute nightmare. For special community events, people are usually advised to leave the car at home and walk or cycle into town where possible. But what do you do if you cannot do that – if, for instance, you live that bit too far out of town or have young children? The promised traffic study just cannot come soon enough for most of us. It seems like parking spaces are more and more at a premium with every year that goes by. Many people try to get their business done as early as they can to avoid the knotty problem of parking, but wouldn’t it be a bonus if we had an ideal-world scenario, with easier and ample parking that made visiting the town centre a pleasure no matter what the hour. Killarney Advertiser 26.08.16

Thinking outside the box WHEN it comes to creating more space for parking, imaginative solutions seem to be called for. So what about looking at existing sites? When we mooted the (hypothetical) idea of utilising facilities such as Fitzgerald Stadium, the response was mixed. The only time most people can recall the ground near the stadium being utilised in this way by outside organisations was when it was offered as a vetting point during the Circuit of Kerry Rally, noted Killarney mayor Cllr Brendan Cronin. “I cannot see the committee allowing it to be used, realistically – in fine weather it would be

grand but it would destroy the grounds otherwise, it would ruin the place,” he said. Asked as to such hypothetical use of the stadium property, Cllr Donal Grady said: “There’s nothing wrong with the idea. Maybe if we could use the old playing pitch.” Chairman of the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee Der Brosnan noted that the committee had not been approached by the local authority for using stadium property for parking, adding that leaving the gates open “would be inviting trouble”. Such a move “just wouldn’t work” he added.

Question

What are the rules around using the national flag. Is it true that you can’t write on it? Answer

The National Flag of Ireland is often referred to as the tricolour and consists of three colours – green, white and orange. It was adopted as the flag of the Irish Free State in 1922. It was formally confirmed as the National Flag in the 1937 Constitution: “The national flag is the tricolour of green, white and orange.” Article 7: Bunreacht na hÉireann. As part of the 1916 commemorations, the national flag was presented to every primary and post-primary school in the State. Along with the flag, schools received a copy of the 1916 Proclamation as Gaeilge and in English, and a booklet detailing the guidelines for respecting the flag. These guidelines are issued by the Department of the Taoiseach and give extensive information about when the flag can be flown and how it should be used. For example, no other flag or pennant should be flown above it when it is being flown in Ireland. Care must also be taken not to let the flag touch the ground or become entangled with trees. The flag should never be defaced by placing slogans, logos, lettering or pictures of any kind on it, for example, at sporting events and it should not be draped on cars, trains, boats or other modes of transport. It should not be carried flat, except when used to drape a coffin. The rules also say the national flag should be replaced if it has become worn or frayed, as it is no longer fit for display in a respectful manner. The same principles apply if the flag is reproduced in printed or electronic format. However, these guidelines are not statutory guidelines. In other words, there are no laws setting out the rules around use of the flag. This means that there are no penalties for anyone who does not follow the guidelines. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Best of luck to the Kerry senior and minor football teams in All-Ireland semi-finals

Kerry set their sights on showdown with Dublin Kerry football captain Bryan Sheehan at team training at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. Picture: Eamonn Keogh

THIS Sunday’s hotly anticipated All-Ireland semi-final showdown between Kerry and Dublin in Croke Park is certainly a season-defining game for both sides. Kerry GAA PRO John O’Leary said: “It goes without saying that, when it comes to championship fare, Dublin have certainly turned the tables on Kerry in recent years and if losses to the Metropolitans in two All-Ireland Finals and a semi-final is not enough, just last April Kerry were also handed a drubbing in the League final. Kerry supporters “are under no illusions as to what faces them on Sunday next” against a side whose consistency has been their hallmark particularly since Jim Gavin took over the reins, he added. Eamonn Fitzmaurice, who came agonisingly close to guiding Kerry to victory over the Dubs in his first game as manager in Croke Park three years ago, will know that Kerry were somewhat off the mark when the sides clashed in the final last September, he added. “Yet for all of that, he will also know that there was only a score between the sides at the finish. Kerry will need to be on top of their game on Sunday next and take the game to their opponents from the off akin to that famous quarter-final performance back in 2009 when Kerry went for the jugular from the first whistle,” added John. Speculation as to what the make up of the team will be has gone into overdrive in the past couple of weeks or so with the midfield pairing in particular coming in for special scrutiny but all will be revealed when the team is announced this evening at 9pm on the Kerry GAA website and Radio Kerry.

Kerry Minors take on Kildare KILDARE stand in the way of Kerry reaching a third successive All-Ireland final when the sides clash in the semi-final in the curtain-raiser at Croke Park on Sunday next (1.30pm). Kerry of course, under the stewardship of Jack O’Connor, are champions of this grade for the past two years and so far the transition to the new team management headed up by Peter Keane has been seamless. This game will be Kerry’s biggest test to date but with many of the side having been through the big day Croke Park atmosphere last year and more having been part of the St Brendan’s Hogan Cup-winning side earlier in the year, the experience gained should stand them in good stead. The Kerry team will be announced this evening at 8pm.

Dublin fan Chad cooks up support for Kerry team HE’S a diehard Dublin supporter, but Chad Byrne set his allegiances aside to wish the Kerry team the best of luck in Sunday’s semi-final. As head chef at The Brehon, the Kerry team hotel, Chad has cooked in excess of 100 meals for the Kingdom’s players in the past nine months alone. He took time out this week to pose for a picture with Kerry footballers Colm Cooper, Kieran Donaghy, Marc O Se and David Moran ahead of the All-Ireland semi-final between Kerry and Dublin next Sunday. Water baby dons the green and gold AS KERRY gets ready to face Dublin in the All-Ireland Championship Semi-Final at Croke Park, Kerry football fan Ollie Kelly dressed to impress. The 11-monthold Killarney swimmer is training hard underwater at his Water Babies class and this week donned the green and gold. Ollie Kelly has been swimming with Water Babies since he was a small baby. “Swimming from babyhood, without the use of flotation devices, tends to make children supremely confident in and around water,” said a spokeswoman. “They love experiencing a totally different underwater world to play in. And it’s a great way to start training early for the Kerry football team!”

‘The best advice I’ve ever had? Take things one day at a time’ THIS time last year Julett Culloty took centre stage to represent her county in the Rose of Tralee and the bubbly young Kilcummin lady was delighted to return to the county town to renew friendships and support her successor in this year’s festival. And the social whirl doesn’t stop there for Julette, who next Thursday, September 1, will be joining Majella O’Donnell and a host of others who have recovered from cancer as they take to the catwalk in the INEC for the Models in Recovery fashion show in aid of the Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. “It is such a positive event, we’re all in recovery and we all have different stories,” Julett told the Killarney Advertiser. “We often only hear the negative stories when we think of cancer. It can be so frightening; people think of the worst-case scenario but this fashion show celebrates people getting through the experience so it really is a fantastic cause to be supporting.” Julette was diagnosed with cervical cancer in April 2014. “I began my treatment in June of that year. I had intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy,” she said. Fortunately Julett got the all-clear in October 2014. She is keen to spread the message of positivity and hope to others. “News of diagnosis is obviously a blow. I remember when I was dealing with it, the best advice I got was from my uncle, Dan Reidy, who said: ‘Look, we’ll get through today, and as for what’s coming tomorrow, we’ll deal with that then.’ That concept of taking things day by day was so helpful, particularly when there was so much racing through my head.” Co-ordinated by Margaret Walsh O’Donoghue fashion show will be preceded by a wine reception at 7pm sharp. Tickets, €15, are available from Pat Doolan, chairman, Killarney branch of Kerry Hospice Foundation, 085-1543514, or participating shops. Julette Culloty and, below, Cathal Walshe, Margaret Walsh O'Donoghue, Kay Spillane, Bernie O'Sullivan, Elsie Hegarty, Julett Culloty, Noreen Collins and Pat Doolan launch the third annual Models in Recovery fashion show which takes place at the INEC, Killarney, on Thursday, September 1.

Sun smiles on Killarney Athletic's milestone celebration KILLARNEY ATHLETIC AC paid tribute to its founder, Don Harrington, on a sun-splashed evening at its club grounds at Woodlawn. Don unveiled a commemorative plaque in a picture-perfect setting on the banks of the River Flesk. The plaque acknowledges him as the man who founded the club in 1965. Don also presented the Monica Harrington Memorial Cup to Colette Casey for her outstanding commitment and dedication to the club. The cup is dedicated to the memory of Don’s wife Monica. “I will never forget the kindness and support I received from the club and all of you at the passing of my dear wife Monica last year. It is hard for me to feel that over 12 months have gone by since then,” said Don. Donagh Gleeson, Pat Doody and John Sparling, who were part of the Athletic teams in the early years, attended as well as members representing all five decades of the club thereafter. Mike O’Sullivan recalled the significance of what Don had done and achieved in forming a soccer club in Killarney in 1965 as a 19-year-old garda. “I would like to acknowledge the support and encouragement that Don must have received from his colleagues in the Killarney station at the time,” said Mike. Mike also acknowledged the generosity of spirit shown by the late John McShain (RIP) through his solicitor Michael Casey (RIP) in granting Don permission to use a part of his land in the HalfMoon field for a soccer pitch. “That link still

‘Scandalous that Kerry sports clubs are missing out on essential funding’ SPORTS clubs across the county are missing out on important funding, according to Kerry Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil, who described the situation as “scandalous”. Deputy Brassil claimed clubs are losing out because the Sports Minister has not announced the next round of the Sports Capital Grant. Minister Shane Ross has confirmed that no decision has been taken on when the next round of the grant will be made, added Deputy Brassil. The Kerry TD said: “It is scandalous that there has been no Sports Capital Grant announcement for 2016. Even if a decision is made in the next few months, the fact of the matter is no money will be drawn down at all this year. This money is extremely important for sports clubs and communities across the country with many depending on this funding to buy new equipment and upgrade and improve facilities." Deputy Brassil added: “There appears to be no credible reason as to why this year’s announcement has not been made, but it is not acceptable that clubs across Co Kerry are being left high and dry. The last round of applications for the scheme was in 2015 and an announcement for this year is long overdue. I am worried by Minister Ross’ lax attitude, and particularly his comment that “no decision has been taken on the timing of the next rounds of the SCP.” This scheme “should not be allowed to fall off the Minister’s agenda”, added Deputy Brassil. “It is a vital resource for communities the length and breadth of the country, who are now missing out on essential funding.

Get on your bike for Killarney Cycling Festival PUT your pedal power to the test at the Killarney Cycling Festival which takes place tomorrow, Saturday, August 27. If the climbs don’t take your breath away the scenery certainly will! Cyclists can choose from two tantalising routes, the Wrong Way Round or the gruelling Hard Way Round. Both routes circle the spectacular Iveragh Peninsula, taking in some of the most spectacular vistas on the planet. The Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation is the official charity of the Killarney Cycling Festival. Cyclists have the option of donating directly to the charity when registering. Registration costs €55 and includes access to the food stops and the post cycle party at The Gleneagle Hotel with live entertainment and a barbeque.

The Wrong Way Round is 160km long. It departs from The Gleneagle hotel and tackles Molls Gap first before heading for the scenic South West via Sneem. From there on the route is familiar passing Waterville, Caherciveen, Glenbeigh and Killorglin. The more challenging Hard Way Round is 180km long and diverges from the Wrong Way Round by taking a right for Ballaghbeama through the heart of Kerry to Ballaghoisin, then there’s a further detour around the stunning Skellig Ring before rejoining the main troop on the road to Caherciveen. THE Minister of State for Housing and Urban Renewal, Damien English, turned the sod on the new water treatment plant at Lough Guitane yesterday. Local landowner Seamus (Sham) Courtney was on hand as the construction of the water treatment plant was begun. The plant is part of a €30 million investment by Irish Water in the Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme which also includes upgrades to existing water infrastructure on the supply, servicing 62,000 people on 9 water supply zones in the county. It is planned that the works being carried out will result in the provision of robust water treatment facilities, which will ensure a safe and secure water supply for residents, industry, agriculture and tourism in the area. Glan Agua is the appointed contractor carrying out the design and construction works on behalf of Irish Water, with engineering services provided by Nicholas O’Dwyer and work to date completed by Kerry County Council.

Plough straight ahead for Fossa this September

IT’S an impressive sum – €60,000 and counting has been generated for local charities thanks to the South Kerry Ploughing Championships. And this charity community event will turn back the clock and look to the future on the same afternoon as it unfolds on Sunday, September 11. The third annual South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show has been scheduled for Fleming’s Farm, Grenagh, Fossa, and organisers are planning an action-packed, entertainment-filled family day out to generate funds for deserving local causes. The event – fast developing into one of the social highlights of the year in Kerry – has already helped to raise in excess of €60,000 for local organisations and this year’s beneficiaries will be the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association, Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus. It is organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club and there will be several celebrities in attendance on the day. The big day will feature over 200 trade stands as well as traditional and modern method ploughing demonstrations, sheep dog trials, sheep shearing competitions, harvesting demos, machinery showcases and traditional farm practice exhibitions. There will be two fashion shows on the day with sensational prizes on offer for the most stylish lady and the best-dressed man while a stunning array of gifts will await the winner of the always popular bonny baby contest. One lucky person could win a wonderful vintage Ford Anglia and five-star weekend breaks will also be up for grabs. A major traffic management plan will be enforced with 60 acres of land set aside for free parking while the Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show will take place in an adjoining 60 acres of land owned by the Fleming family. The gates will open at 11am and patrons are advised to arrive early as there will be so much to see and do on the day.

Spa GAA team perfectly pitched for time travel SPA GAA CLUB members laced on their football boots to march back through the decades as the surviving members of the team that won the club’s first O’Donoghue Cup title enjoyed a grand reunion a half-century after the historic occasion. There’s not many times in the year that I am not shouting for Kerry. We’ll give it our best shot on Sunday!” Luka is also excited about his new album, Frúgalisto, which was released earlier this year and is available in CD and vinyl at www.lukabloom or at Tower

Records, Dublin. “In these times of people streaming music and in this era of Spotify I still hold on to this idea of that making a record is the thing to do. I am so excited about the release of this album,” he said. Having produced 20 albums since the 1970s, Luka continues to push the boundaries of what his music can do and has the power to bring audiences to a hush as his poetic lyrics bounce over melodies in a beautiful, captivating way. The same artist can rouse the spirit of the audience to the ceiling when he changes the tempo. Describing himself as “lying low” in the Banner County in the run-up to the tour, he added: “When you’re living in Clare it’s not really lying low as such….there’s too much divilment here for that! My idea of lying low is simply now having to go through airports!”

Grace Notes THE MUSIC FAMILY

In a career that can be considered quite a lonely one it is so important to surround yourself with fellow musicians who you can share your journey with, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

JUST this week I was lucky enough to work with three people who are not only superb musicians, they are also my friends.

Padraig Buckley, Niamh Varian Barry and Tony O’Flaherty all came together this week to feature on my upcoming album, Home To Kerry, and I felt such a great buzz while working with them. As I mentioned in a previous piece, the studio can sometimes be a lonely place, so it was such a pleasure to be accompanied by these wonderful musicians.

Being a musician automatically means you are part of a very big, very special family. I find that no matter where I go in life I will always come across another person involved in music and we automatically have something very important in common. A place I hold very dear to my heart is the Killarney School of Music. Everyday I go to work I am surrounded by fellow musicians, all with very diversified backgrounds and so many stories to tell. The music circle is a unique and sacred place where people can share both their triumphs

and their failures. What I particularly enjoy is the fact that sometimes we can get more enjoyment out of telling the stories of when we nearly messed up or when we really were “winging it”! We all understand the adrenaline rush of performing in public and the real buzz of “getting away with” a bit of a slip-up. I love listening to other people's stories because we all have very different backgrounds. Some are traditional musicians, some have a classical background. Some have taught for years while for others it is still a relatively new vocation. We all come from different places and yet we share this one love. This love that connects us forever. This love for music. •Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

THE parable in Luke 14:1, 7-14 brings out two contrasting experiences, but each in its own way can be a moment of grace, a moment of truth, a moment of growth. You may be able to recall such experiences in your life. In the first (verses 8, 9), we discover that we had claimed a place that is too high for us; we are not as selfless, generous or compassionate as we thought we were. In the second (verse 10), when others point out a goodness in ourselves that we may not have acknowledged to ourselves. How have you grown through such experiences? In verses 12-14, Jesus warns us against the danger of ulterior motives in doing good. We can do good things partly because of the benefit we will get from what we do. That is natural but can lead to disappointment and resentment when our expectations are not met. When the good deed in itself is our reward, we have a greater freedom. Feedback will be a bonus but not necessary. What does your life experience tell you about this? JOHN BYRNE, OSA

MUSINGS

“JESUS had gone for a meal to the house of one of the leading Pharisees; and they watched him closely.” (Luke 14:1) It’s no fun to be watched, to have your actions checked against what you say. Jesus had been preaching love and tolerance, now his fellow-guests wondered if he would let his true feelings slip. Just a sideways comment or a flippant remark would be enough to confirm their suspicion that he was not all he seemed. The leading Pharisees were acutely aware of tiny errors that revealed infidelity to law-keeping. They were masterobservers. Jesus remained consistent however. He not only believed in humility, he preached it – and he lived it. The Pharisees saw that Jesus was true to his word. Consistency is a hard standard to measure up to. It’s much easier to preach one thing and live another. But we don’t get away with it when our actions are being monitored, when we are watched, as is often the case. Lord, help me to remember that what I do and say has an impact on others, and that my words and deeds have to match.

E ARE STARTING to say farewell to summer – a time when laziness becomes respectable and we take a break from fires and dusting and sometimes even the ironing (it’s too hot to iron!).

The weather now is becoming more autumnal and our focus changes from outside back to inside our home. I love autumn and winter – a nice fire, a good book and a warm throw to keep the cabin fever at bay.

I have to have a project and my next one is the master bedroom which I have been avoiding finishing, as unlike the rest of the house no one sees it.

With our focus on in bedrooms this issue, it’s pushing me to get this finished. My favourite pieces in this month’s Home & Living are the bed from the Killarney Furniture and Carpets. It makes a real statement and only needs some simple pieces to set it off to perfection. Check out our top colour choices from the Little Greene Paint Company, a wonderful new addition to Corcoran’s Furniture. Happy redecorating.

Creating the home of your dreams

WHEN this Tralee homeowner decided to turn her property into her bespoke dream home, she enlisted the help of interior designer Marian Cantillon. The semi-detached residence benefited from numerous ingenious tweaks, enhancing and maximising the space. “I had the idea of where to put doors into rooms to maximise space as well as where to put walls to ensure it looked just the way I wanted it to,” said the owner. “I had a very good builder who explained what I could and couldn’t do. We all worked together, knocking and rebuilding walls and closing doors to make the house my own.” One of the features that really personalises the

interior is the mural of the world that is a focal point in the bedroom. “It’s special to me because I love travelling!” said the owner.

The front room is also a source of particular pride. “I have a Boru stove inset into the alcove, again because the room is slightly narrow,” said the owner. Another creative masterstroke was the kitchen. “It was dark and narrow so we put in French doors facing the garden,” sad the owner. “Everything about this space was done to maximise the light as the kitchen doesn’t get the sun.”

Clever use of space is also evident under the stairs. The interior marries the old with the new, with the owner giving pride of place to the dining room table

and chairs she inherited from her great grandparents. “The table and chairs have moved house with me over the years and I have had the chairs recovered to suit the décor,” she added.

Make your bedroom a five-star haven THE team at Mylestone Interiors offers a wealth of wonderful ideas when it comes to perfecting your bedroom. Patrick Carmody of Mylestone said: “Regarding our bedroom design philosophy, we like to make the most of the space.” Storage is very important, he adds, while a wardrobe with mirrored doors will enhance space. “This will also reflect your headboard, wallpaper and chandelier,” said Patrick. “We like to use patterned wallpaper behind the headboard and use plain velvet or hessian fabric and design tall custom-made headboards to the ceiling where possible. “Add two generous-sized lockers with two quality table lamps and you’re almost there.” Then it’s just about adding the finishing layers. “If you have lots space, why not add a living room area too your bedroom?” said Patrick. “Just add two armchairs or a sofa and a coffee and side table. Remember, you spend a lot of time there so why not make it really nice. “For the cost of a few nights in a five-hotel why not make your own five-star bedroom and you get to spend 365 days a year in pure luxury.”

Windy city celebrates as Chicago Rose is crowned Rose of Tralee MAGGIE MCELDOWNEY, representing Chicago, is the 2016 Rose of Tralee. RTÉ’s Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result in front of nearly one million television viewers and an audience of 2000 people in the Festival Dome on Teusday night. Maggie (27) was presented with her sash and tiara by 2015 Rose of Tralee Elysha Brennan and Robbie Scanlan, Managing Director of Tipperary Crystal, lead sponsors of the Festival. Speaking after becoming the 58th lady to be crowned Rose of Tralee, Maggie said: “The crown’s coming to Chicago. I’m so excited about it! One of my favourite parts about being the Chicago Rose is that every day I get to wear the Chicago sash. I’m just beaming with pride because I know the people back home and the people I’m representing at my Centre are very special. There’s such a strong Irish community in Chicago, I can’t wait to share the news with them.” Maggie McEldowney, a native of the south-side of the city, is the third Chicago Rose of Tralee following Teresa Kenny in 1960 and Larna Canoy in 1987.

She works as the Director of Development at Marist High School and is passionate about raising money for families who could not otherwise afford Catholic education. After earning the Chick Evans Scholarship to the University of Illinois, she graduated with a degree in Media Studies in 2011. “I understand the tremendous impact a Rose can have on the lives of others, and will continue that tradition wholeheartedly as the 2016 Rose of Tralee,” said Maggie whose grandmother, Brigid O’Neill, was born and raised in Maghera, Co Derry. Singing sensation Nathan Carter serenaded Maggie McEldowney in the Dome and again on Denny Street in the heart of Tralee where thousands of people turned out for the Midnight Madness Parade sponsored by Bon Secours Hospital Tralee. The 2016 Rose of Tralee International Festival was the biggest in its long history with 65 Roses taking part in the seven-day event.

So who was the Rose of Tralee stage invader? IN WHAT was a first in the Rose of Tralee International Festival’s 57-year history, a protester stormed the stage. The gate crasher scaled the stage in the middle of Cavan Rose Lisa Reilly’s interview with host Daithi O Se. Dressed as a priest, Fathers4Justice founder Matt O’Connor called upon the audience to “join him and the broken families of Ireland”. As the audience looked on bewildered, RTÉ cut to a break and afterwards the Cavan Rose received a resounding round of applause as she carried on with her interview. Fathers4Justice have carried out similar stunts over the years and took responsibility for the incident on Twitter shortly afterwards. The Cavan Rose was commended for her composure. Meanwhile, O’Connor said he does not regret his protest. “I think it will be judged to be an effective protest, I think people are talking about the issue,” he said, adding he had received much positive support on social media and via email. Asked if he wished to apologise to Ms O’Reilly, he said: “Apology’s the right word – obviously nobody wants to disrupt anybody’s evening, but we have to put it in the context of what we campaign for – a very, very serious issue.”

The Provocateur My message to Rose-bashers? Get a life

I ENJOY the hardy annual that is the Rose of Tralee television selection. There, I’ve said it. And I don’t give a hoot about the too-cool-for-school brigade who will sneer at that statement. Let me start from the beginning. The annual Rose contest something everyone of my generation will have grown with. As children we would get our grubby little paws on the newspaper spreads presenting a headshot and description of each contender and lay claim to our Rose of choice with the mighty weapon of the Bic biro. When we grew up there was that drift of interest but in recent years I find myself tuning in every autumn. The conversation is usually multi-dimensional, I’ll watch it, or keep and eye on it, with family or friends living here in Killarney, and a couple of pals who have long moved away from Kerry will chip in with text messages giving their (always very witty) take on matters as they progress over the two-night RTÉ coverage. But what I don’t understand is the deluge of tweets and other social media comments as well as column inches filled with vitriol and disdain for the pageant. The solution is glaringly simple: You don’t like it or find it offensive? Well, just look away! Don’t watch it! Change channels or switch off the TV. My sneaking suspicion is that these wannabe hipsters (who in reality belong to that most old-fashioned of species, the curmudgeon) are more obsessed with it than anyone else. How sad is it that complaining, grousing and mockery seens to be their way of making them feel good about themselves? Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? A Weekly Round-Up Of News +

No green monsters Rio got a very bad pre-Olympics press with reports of water and air pollution and the zika virus hitting headlines nationwide. All went better than expected, for a while. Then, when the pool went green thedoom and gloom merchants had a ball. Now all is revealed. It has been revealed that an unauthorised dump of 80 litres of hydrogen peroxide was responsible for turning the two pools a murky green colour in what has been described by organisers as “embarrassing”. The water polo pool at the Rio de Janeiro Aquatics Centre will be drained completely. Organisers confirmed that the water was still safe to enter, although a number of water polo players – competing in the pool alongside the diving one – reported to be suffering from itchy eyes. Various theories claimed that the colour change could be due to the green advertising board, inadequate levels of chlorine and possibly an illegal contamination, but it has been confirmed that the addition of hydrogen peroxide neutralised the chlorine in the pools and meant that algae was able to bloom.

"This is a way of cleaning swimming pools but you're not supposed to combine it with chlorine," Gustavo Nascimento, Rio 2016's director of venue management, told reporters in Brazil. "We were not consulted, our contractor's failure is our failure." A spokesman for Rio 2016 labelled the ordeal an “embarrassment”, although they refused to confirm who the independent contractor was that was responsible for the dump of hydrogen peroxide. A full 10 hours is needed to drain and refill the pool. The diving pool, which did not cause as many problems for divers this week, will remain as it is with organisers continuing to treat the water in the hope for it to return to normal later. Nascimento added that the participation of over 120 athletes in the diving pool had added to the “organics” in the water that were responsible for the colour change.

‘The main ports should keep their nose out of Kerry’ KERRY TD Michael Healy-Rae has accused the major ports in Ireland of making a concerted effort to stop proposals for cruise ships from visiting Valentia Harbour and Ballinskelligs Bay. Over the last 12 months a group has been working in South Kerry to have Valentia Harbour and Ballinskelligs Bay included in a Fáilte Ireland-funded external report titled “All Ireland Cruise Strategy”. While the research was being conducted experts visited South Kerry and stayed on

Valentia Island. They were very impressed and included Valentia Island as a new cruise destination in the draft report. But Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said the main Irish ports “do not want this to happen”. Deputy Healy-Rae said it would be “devastating” for the area if it is to be disregarded from the report. “The main ports should keep their nose out of Kerry and not interfering with great efforts being made by people who want to bring more tourism and business to our counties” he said.

Views From Kerry And Around The World Water, water, everywhere... Lesotho is experiencing food insecurity as a result of drought despite being the site of the second largest dam in Africa, because water is being exported to its neighbour South Africa. An estimated 680,000 people — more than a quarter of the total population – are in need of emergency food and assistance, according to the World Food Programme (WFP). Crops are failing in the landlocked region because of erratic rainfall linked to the El Nino weather system, which has plunged swathes or eastern and southern Africa into drought. But farmers say that if they could irrigate crops with water from the vast Katse Dam they could increase their yield. “I am very angry about that water, because it could benefit us, we could use it to water the crops when there is a drought. But that's not happening,” Mohlakoane Molise, a 65-year-old farmer, told AFP. Mr Molise’s total annual harvest for 2016 filled just two large sacks, in place of the usual dozen. According WFP, the 2016 harvest for Lesotho's primary crop maize is less than a third of what it was last year. While depleted, the Katse Dam is still at more than half its normal water level, meaning that many farmers are watching their crops shrivel and die against the backdrop of an expansive lake. “The level today is about 63.4 percent, which is quite low,” Tatuku Maseatile, Katse acting

branch manager for the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, told AFP. “But we are still able to meet our annual targets in terms of both [electricity] generation and water transfer.” When the Katse Dam was built in the nineties, Lesotho was dubbed the ‘Water Castle’ for South Africa, which surrounds it on all sides. It was negotiated that the dam would supply Lesotho with hydroelectricity, and the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg in South Africa with water. But Lesothian farmers said they have struggled to make a living since their land was flooded. “There were fields around the river before the dam was built, and there were trees, but they are covered by water,” said Mr Molise. “Since the dam is here, it's difficult to get water. The crops are very poor, even the grazing land. It's like a desert.” The tiny nation is now forced to import food from South Africa, which has also been affected by El Nino, reducing crop yield and pushing prices up by 60 per cent in the past year. “From September, we'll have nothing left and we'll struggle to buy maize from the shop,” said Mr Molise. According to the United Nations, 40 million people across southern Africa risk enduring malnutrition by next year's harvest.

Courteney Cox ‘regrets’ efforts to battle ageing

FORMER Friends star Courteney Cox has said she is reconciled to looking older and regrets some procedures she had in the past to keep the wrinkles at bay. Cox, 52, spoke out during an expedition with outdoor adventurer Bear Grylls in Kerry, in which the pair abseiled down cliffs and shared maggots found in a rotting sheep. “Getting older has not been ... I don’t think it’s the easiest thing. But I have learned lessons,” Cox said in the Running Wild with Bear Grylls episode that aired on NBC television in the US this week. Cox, who spoke some years ago about using cosmetic treatments to prolong her youthful looks, said she was now more relaxed. “Sometimes you find yourself trying and then you look at a picture of yourself and go, ‘Oh, God.’ Like, you look horrible. I have done things that I regret, and luckily they’re things that dissolve and go away. So, um, that’s good, because it’s not always been my best look. So, now I just have a new motto: ‘Just let it be,’” she said. Cox, who played Monica Geller for 10 years in the comedy series Friends, is the latest star to speak out about the pressure women feel in Hollywood to maintain their looks. Her co-star from the successful, longrunning sitcom, Jennifer Aniston, 47, last month wrote that she was sick of the “sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily” in celebrity and other media.

THE GLENEAGLE HOTEL has been voted one of Munster’s top three family-friendly hotels by the readers of the popular magazine Primary Times South. The Primary Times Star Awards, which are now in their 6th year, champion the best places and best businesses in Munster for families with young children. All the winners have been selected solely by votes from the readers of Primary Times South magazine. The other two winning hotels are the Quality Hotel in Clonakilty and the Clarion Hotel in Cork. A number of family friendly visitor attractions were also recognised. Fota Wildlife Park won Best Outdoor Activity Centre, Monkey Maze in Glanmire won Best Indoor Activity Centre and Anyone for Science won Best Summer Camp. Editor Tara McKeown said the results show that having great places to visit locally is still an important part of family life. “We are delighted that The Gleneagle has been named as one of Munster’s top family hotels. We

love when families spend their holidays here with us,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, managing director of The Gleneagle Hotel. “As a family-run hotel, we understand better than anyone how special family holidays are. We are in the business of making precious memories that will be remembered for years to come.” The Primary Times South Star Award winners were compiled from postal entries, unique email entries and online voting (one vote per computer or device) from readers of Primary Times South between 1st June and 31st August 2016. Primary Times South is a free ‘What’s on and Where to Go’ guide

specifically for the families of children aged 0-12 years, and primary school teachers in the region. Established in 2003, the magazine is published 4 times a year (spring, summer, autumn and winter). It has a circulation of 50,000 copies distributed to primary schools and crèches in Cork and Waterford, and selected towns in Kerry and Tipperary. It is also available at libraries and tourist information centres and is available to download free from App stores. Nationally, Primary Times publishes over 140,000 copies in 3 different regions (Munster, Leinster, and Dublin) throughout the Republic of Ireland.

CAREER OPTIONS KERRY

CAO offers, available places and deferring entry Career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan offers advice on deciding on that all-important offer IF YOU received a CAO Round One offer on Monday last, August 22, you have until 5.15pm on this coming Monday, August 29, to decide whether to accept it or not. If you do not accept the offer through the CAO, by this date the offer will lapse. However, if you feel this is the right course for you and are happy to accept it the CAO will then inform the college who in turn will contact you with further information on registration and a start date for beginning the course. Some further offers will be made at Round two on September 1st with the reply date being September 7th at 5.15pm. These offers are made if there are places unfilled from Round One. If a place becomes available on a course which you have listed as a higher preference and if you are eligible to accept it, then you will receive an offer regardless of whether or not you have accepted a place in Round One. You can then decide whether to keep your first offer or to accept the new offer.

62

Killarney Advertiser 26.08.16

AVAILABLE PLACES Any course places that have not been filled are now available and continue to be updated under “Available Places” on the CAO website. New and existing applicants can apply for these places. If you are already registered with the CAO you can add any of these courses to your list at no extra cost. You will however need to ensure that you meet the minimum entry requirements for any course you may be interested in applying for. New applicants may make an Available Place application by paying a registration fee of €40.00. DEFERRING ENTRY Having given thought to college and courses over the summer you may be thinking about deferring entry for another year. In order to defer entry you should not accept your offer from the CAO. Instead, you should email or write to the Admissions Office of the relevant college immediately, writing “deferred entry” on the subject line of the email or on the envelope and including your name, CAO number, course code of the course offered and the reason/s for your request. If the college you have

received an offer from grant you a deferral your offer of a place will be held for you until Autumn 2017 regardless of any change to points or entry requirements that may occur next year. When taking up your place the following year you will need to re-apply to the CAO listing the deferred course as your first and only preference. Further information on the above is available at www.cao.ie •You can contact career guidance counsellor Eithne Teahan by emailing info@careeroptionskerry. com or calling 087-2028185

Tina’s great big birthday adventure

KILLARNEY woman Tina Reed certainly set the bar high when it comes to celebrating landmark birthdays in style. The adventure race enthusiast was part of a team embarking on the five-day Itera expedition race, which concluded on Sunday. “I actually turned 50 during the race, on August 18, and I'm seeing that as a positive!” said Tina. “There's no need to stop adventure and activity just because of age!” The name of the race comes from "tier", the Latin for “journey", and the "a" at the end stands for "adventure". Artist and art teacher Tina was joined on the team by her husband Pat Rodgers, Killarney, as well as Brian Harman from Cork and Damon de Boor from South Africa. “We were sponsored by two local businesses and would like to pay tribute to them; they are Kerry Outdoor Sports and Killorglin insulation specialists DC Energy Solutions,” said Tina. Tina is no stranger to extreme sports and had previously competed in such challenging events as the Beast of Ballyhoura and the Kerry Way Ultra Marathon. Team Kerry Outdoor Sports and DC Energy Solutions was among 40 mixed teams taking part in Itera. “These teams of four are coming from Ireland, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand,” added Tina. “The race covered a distance of 600km – hiking, biking and kayaking nonstop,” said Tina.

Brookfield College: Helping students reach their potential THE exceptional success rates achieved by previous Leaving Cert classes at Brookfield College continued when the class of 2016 received their results last week. Now beginning its 29th year, the school recently moved to a new modern school in Monavalley, Tralee. Brookfield College is a leading provider of private second level education, offering a full-time programme for fifth year, sixth year and repeat Leaving Certificate students. At present the school is busy enrolling students for the coming year.

You may have missed your first choice by a few points. You may just feel that your results do not accurately reflect your ability. Repeating the

Leaving is not an easy option but often it is the right one, said Elisha Dowling, Brookfield College. “A change of environment with a different approach can be worthwhile,” said Elisha. “Brookfield College offers that alternative. Our average increase for repeat students last year was 90 points. With the right attitude and work rate a feeling of disappointment and regret can be turned into a feeling of elation and satisfaction in the space of a short academic year.” Even where a student is unsure if repeating it the right option it is very advisable to have a meeting with us. Then it is easier to make an informed decision.

Victory for Killarney’s Rob Duggan and Ger Conway

Killarney’s Rob Duggan and Ger Conway who took top honours in the Junior category of the John Mulholland Motors Ulster Rally at the weekend, clinching the DMACK Junior title in the British Rally Championship.

update

CELEBRATIONS were the order of the day as Killarney’s Rob Duggan and Ger Conway took top honours in the junior category of the John Mulholland Motors Ulster Rally at the weekend, clinching the DMACK Junior title in the British Rally Championship. This was their fourth junior win of the year. This lucrative prize provides funding for Duggan, last year’s Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year and the current holder of the Billy Coleman Award, to take a huge step forward in his rally career by tackling five rounds of next year’s World Rally Championship. The only problem Duggan had during the two days of stages in the Sperrin Mountains was when he bent a suspension arm on his Vauxhall Adam on the second of fourteen stages, but his service crew replaced it and he stayed well clear of his title rival, Sindre Furuseth of Norway, to the finish, winning by almost two minutes. The Outright winner of the Ulster Rally was Welshman Elfyn Evans, who also took the overall British title in his Fiesta. He led for most of the event, with three times champion Keith Cronin of West Cork his closest challenger until late problems dropped Cronin’s Citroen DS3 to fifth place. With just three stages left, the worried looking Corkman arrived back into service in Derry city with gearbox problems. His crew managed to change the unit, but he was still unable to select gears, and the extra lateness this cost him dropped him behind NI drivers Alastair Fisher and Jonny Greer, and Scotsman David Bogie. Cronin’s hopes of winning the Clonakilty Black Pudding Tarmac series now depend on a good result in the final round, the Acesigns Cork 20, in October.

Tractors rev up for charity action VINTAGE tractor enthusiasts will enjoy a day to remember tomorrow, Saturday, August 27, as the annual Ring of Kerry tractor run takes place. This year’s event, in conjunction with the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club, will generate funds for Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin as well as for the family of local youngster Amy O’Connor. Nobber Vintage Club in Co Meath is joining forces with its friends in Kerry to host what will be its sixth annual vintage run fundraiser. Tractors will converge on Tony Wharton’s field, Dromin, Fossa, this evening, Friday, August 26, from 8.30pm and will depart at 7.30am from the Travel Inn, Fossa, on the Saturday morning. “It is expected that all will be back in Killarney, af-

ter completing the Ring of Kerry, on Saturday evening at 7.30pm or 8pm,” said Tony. The event started in 2011 when James Carolan, chairman of Nobber Vintage Club, came up with the idea to complete the Ring of Kerry with vintage vehicles ion one day. Killarney men Tony Wharton and Mike Myers co-ordinate the event in Kerry. Organisers thank the people of Kerry, including the Gardaí, the Travel Inn, Fossa, Doughlasha House B&B and Beechgrove Caravan & Camping Park, for their continued hospitality, support and generosity. “Everyone is welcome and the event will feature pre-1996 tractors, bikes cars and campers,” said Tony. For further details on the vintage run, contact Tony on 087-2069161.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Coursing does our international reputation no good FIANNA FAIL TD Timmy Dooley is continuing to issue warnings about the threat posed by the Olympics ticket scandal to our international reputation and tourism profile. Deputy Dooley cared little about damage to Ireland's image when he and his Dáil colleagues piled into parliament on June 30 to vote against a bill that sought to criminalise cruel coursing. This shameful bloodsport, in which large dogs are unleashed to chase after timid hares while a mean-spirited

mob bet on the outcome, is undoubtedly souring perception of Ireland. In a modern tourism market where commitment to environmental and wildlife protection is highly regarded, our legislators' refusal to ban coursing and other acts of cruelty is off-putting to many potential visitors. Fáilte Ireland has long since recognised this. The tourism body is keen to point out that "bloodsports including coursing or hunting are not promoted in any Fáilte Ireland publica-

tions". At the next voting opportunity, politicians must realise that supporting a coursing ban may upset a handful of cruel constituents but in the long run, it will do their counties and country a world of good.

Philip Kiernan, Irish Council Against Blood Sports, PO Box 88, Mullingar, Co Westmeath

Rathmore Railway Station should be named after 1916 volunteer I WOULD like to ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport and management of lrish Rail to rename Rathmore Railway Station in County Kerry after Patrick O'Connor, a local volunteer, who lost his life fighting for Irish freedom in Moore Street during Easter Week 1916. Michael O'Mahony, East End, Rathmore

Tarring works in Scartaglin I AM glad that Scartaglin Village will be tarred in the next week or two. It will be done in this time period, weather permitting. This work is being done as part of the three-year Restoration Maintenance Programme 2016-2018 where €36,000 was provided for the works. Myself and my father Danny Healy-Rae ensured that it was included in this programme. Councillor Maura Healy-Rae, Via email

Congratulations to Siobhán Burns, Ciara Moynihan, Ciara Brown, Annie O’Donoghue and Leona Brown along with Coxes Mikey Joe Burns and Michael O’Donoghue, on this fantastic achievement in the All-Irelands. Here’s to Sylvie Bartlett, John O’Leary, Timmy Moynihan and Hugh Rudden, Anne Moynihan, Mary Moynihan, Pauline O’Brien and Derva Ireland, with of course Mikey Joe as Cox. Indeed all of our other crews rowed with gusto, and our U16, U8, and U21 boys were only outside the medals by the narrowest of margins, claiming two 4th and a 5th places in finals. Well done Dylan Bartlett, David Bartlett, Ruadhán Mac Curtáin, Tom O’Leary, Jakub Kunicki, Michael O’Donoghue, Marc Woodard and Seán Farndon. Coxes Timmy Moynihan, Mikey Joe Burns and Michael O’Donoghue. Our Pre-Vet Mixed Crew were also just pipped for bronze…a fantastic row and well done Timmy Moynihan, Anne Moynihan, Pauline O’Brien and Anthony McCarthy. Also our U14 girls and U16 boys deserve our utmost respect, tackling that course in Ballyshannon with ease, and just coming in outside finals qualification. Hats off to Sarah O’Leary, Abigail Gallagher, Ellen Farndon, Kate Rudden, Ross McCarthy, Caolán Ireland and Seán Farndon. Where does one begin with the acknowledgments?? Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Club Captain Liam Hartnett, will be spearheading a group of nineteen members of the Men’s Club who will, this weekend, be embarking on their biennial trip to South Wales, and taking in a game of golf at Tramore enroute. The trip, which has been a great success in the past, takes on a very significant milestone this year, as we celebrate 50 years of friendship with our sister club Southerndown. It was in 1966 that a group of their members came to Killarney for the very first time, and immediately the bond of friendship was sealed, which culminated with the “twinning” of our clubs in 1968. There are many anecdotes regarding the early years, but one of the more memorable ones was recently recalled by Ivo O’Sullivan who was the former Captain of our Club in 1966, and went as follows, that as the evening festivities wore on, the Captain of Southerndown in a speech intimated that “Ye have beaten us in boxing, ye have beaten us in Rugby, ye have beaten us in our golf game, but the unkindest cut of all, is that ye are now beating us in singing”. The trip will include three games of golf, firstly at Tramore where we will play against a team of their members, then on Saturday we will likewise play against Southerndown and finally on Sunday we will be playing at Pyle and Kenfig, and taking in the Kerry Vs Dub-

Sunday next the 4th September is the date for our competition on Lough Currane. Any interested member should contact any club officer to enter, closing date for entries will be on Friday night the 2nd September. Also coming to our attention is a proposal by the Board of Inland Fisheries Ireland to exit freshwater aquaculture operations. IFI’s main fish production unit is located at the IFI fish farm near Roscrea, with a supporting facility, which mainly supports the maintenance of broodstock, located at Cullion (Mullingar). The board has instructed the executive of IFI to develop a plan to facilitate exiting of this business. This would have local interest in such stocked lakes as Barryfinny near Molls Gap and further afield to the Long Lake near Sneem -both popular with local and visiting anglers and where many a juvenile angler caught their first keeper! Given that the general public and various stake holders would have an interest in making comment on this proposal, stakeholders are encouraged to make a submission through the consultation process, the findings of which will be reviewed and considered by IFI, and a report made to Minister Kyne’s Department, before any further steps are taken. There will be no disruption to the supply of fish during this process. The board has indicated that it would make efforts to ensure continued supply of trout for stocking for anglers but this does not appear to have any defined agreements or contracts supporting it but is rather a loose aim at present without any firm undertaking.

Local clubs weekly round-up | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm

with Eamonn Keogh of professional coach in the club. Muharem has a very impressive international coaching record and he will oversee all coaching in St Paul's and will also help out with player development within the club. The new coach will also be working in the local schools reaching out to several more young players in the Killarney and East Kerry area. Back in 1990 popular American coach Dennis Cutts did tremendous work in the club and local schools and he was followed by subsequent American coaches Ralph Groves, Ken McDonald and Bill Reagan during the early 90s. It was a move at the time that contributed to increased growth and popularity in Killarney basketball and paved for St Paul's to achieve national league and Superleague status. St Paul's are hoping that the arrival of Muharem Vugdalic can help the club progress to the next level and bring even more success to the club. The club is very grateful for the support of local businesses. St Paul's would be delighted to hear from any local business that is interested in getting involved with the club in any sponsorship capacity. The St Paul's annual flag day will take place on Saturday, September 17.

Kerry versus Dublin in bid for All-Ireland place Eamonn Fitzgerald previews this Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final

THE standard of football in the 2016 series has been very poor, particularly, when compared with those high quality Kilkenny v Waterford nail-biting All-Ireland hurling games. On Sunday next the dream pairing of Kerry v Dublin has the potential to redress this imbalance. The winners will qualify for the All-Ireland SFC and a tilt for the Sam Maguire. The Kerry v Dublin rivalry first arose in 1955, then on to 1959 and throughout the Golden Years when Mick O’Dwyer and Heffo went head to head with their charges, bidding for the bragging rights and a continuation of the Jackeens v the Culchies. To date in the 2016 series of championship games neither side has met stern opposition so they go in to Sundays’ game in Croker, largely untested. DUBLIN FAVOURITES Dublin will start as favourites on paper, at least they have too much quality players and that extends beyond the regular starting 15. Yet, Small in particular, grasped the opportunity to justify his elevation to the wing back position and was one of the real stars in that win, so much so that I expect him to start on Sunday, even with the expected return of McCarthy. Kerry have improved steadily through this campaign and are really the only side capable of stop-

ping the Dubs retaining the Sam Maguire. The Kerry team has not been announced as On the Ball goes to print, so one can only surmise who will make it from 1 to 15. Much will depend on how players are showing up in training and in the A V B, Probables v Possibles last weekend. That was held behind closed doors – and more is the pity that the general public continue to be excluded from these proceedings. FULL DECK Fitzmaurice has a full deck to work from, with Johnny Buckley and Gooch back fully fit after injuries, which kept them out of the loop for the Clare game. That duo and Bryan Sheehan’s availability will certainly give the selectors options to beef up the midfield area. Moran and Donaghy have not inspired confidence to date and the best midfield pairing now faces them. Gavin has a choice of two from a very mobile trio of Fenton, McCauley and Bastick. I have argued in this column to withdraw Star from midfield. He doesn’t have the mobility at his age to match the Dubs. He is more suited for the edge of the square, or even on the bench. Moran has operated in fits and starts and has not the consistency to inspire confidence. Maher is back fit, but is badly lacking in match practice. Pick two midfielders from Moran,

Donaghy, Maher and Buckley. My choice would be Moran and Maher. FULLBACK LINE The Kerry fullback line, in particular did well in the last outing, but they need to repeat that form on Sunday when they face Dean Rock, Diarmuid Connolly and Bernard Brogan. Connolly is the biggest threat. Like most top players he is a victim of sledging and he has failed to cope with that taunting, as of yet. This is shown by all the cards and suspensions he has picked up this year. Mark Griffin has developed so well this season that he is the best man to wear the number three geansaí, albeit far out from goal, as Connolly is prone to roaming. Although he has a bad disciplinary record Connolly is a very good player. Bernard Brogan has run rings around Marc O Se in the past few years. The Gaeltacht defender conceded up to six points to Brogan in league and championship games, so I am much happier to see Enright marking Brogan. The Tarbert man has matured well in the corner and a continuation of that form will put him in pole position to follow his 2015 All Star elevation, with a similar honour for 2016. Nevertheless, one must take cognisance of the fact that All Star recognition depends for the most part on high performances in the All Ireland semi-final and final. WHO STARTED THE RUMOUR? There was a rumour all week that Bryan Sheehan would be picked as Kerry goalkeeper for his kick outs and for long distance free taking. No doubt about his credentials in both of those areas, but he is a

nonstarter for the primary role of goalkeeping duties. Just simply that, goalkeeping. No not Sheehan at number one, with two fine alternatives in Kelly and Kealy. Scotch that rumour. The selectors know better than to take that gamble on such a big stage. Johnny Buckley has been plagued with a leg injury all season and has been less than fully fit. However, he scored 1-6 from centre forward for Crokes v Templenoe in a recent club game, so he is an option at wing forward, or even at midfield. He is a Trojan worker who will never flinch from the role of tracking back when the opposition are in possession. He could be very useful as a 3rd midfielder. Gooch could be facilitated at centre forward or in one of the corners. Kerry have the scoring pedigree to upset the Dubs defence, especially with Paul Geaney and Darran O’Sullivan in such great form. The heart says Kerry and I hope Kerry takes the initiative and imposes their game on the Dubs. They can certainly do it, but Dublin still gets the nod, with greater strength in the depth of their panel. It looks like a Mayo v Dublin final. KERRY MINORS The senior game gets underway at 3.30pm on Sunday next, but supporters should go early and take in the minor semi-final, Kerry v Kildare. Throw-in is at 1.30pm This is a very good Kerry minor side with great local involvement in the starting 15. Kerry are chasing the three-in-a-row and it is well within their reach.

He is a fine footballer and we wish him a speedy recovery. Spa Abú. U16 County Semi Final Spa played Beale away in Ballybunion last Wednesday in the County league semi final. Senior League: Comhghairdeas to Milltown/ Castlemaine, who on a wet and windy Saturday evening were crowned Senior League Winners for 2016 defeating Beaufort on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-09. The ’Dermot Twiss Memorial Cup’ was presented to Milltown/Castlemaine captain Dónal Kelleher. Special thanks to our Man of the Match Award sponsors. Well done to Mike Hickey, Mike Carroll and Timmy Teahan for their commitment and to the players for giving it their all. O’Sullivan Cup: Milltown Castlemaine are at home to Glenbeigh/Glencar in Round 1 of the O’ Sullivan Cup on Tuesday August 23rd at 7pm. UNDER 13-ROSE CUP: Our U13 sides participated in the ‘Rose Cup’ over the weekend in Tralee. Their never say die attitude bore fruits in the first match against Kerins O’Rahillys -with a last kick game winning point. Next up was a comprehensive win over Listowel Emmett’s. They lost out to a strong Laune Rangers side in the final group game but battled gallantly to the end. In the semi final, they had a good victory over St. Senans -with the boys showing great skill and determination. In the final, they played Ballymac, but unfortunately tired limbs and a much younger side proved too much. It was a gallant effort from the team -with all but three U13 again next year. Well done to the boys in reaching the last four and to their mentors who have worked tremendously hard all year with them. Also a mention to the

parents for their fantastic support on the day. It was very much appreciated by the mentors. Kerry Minors: Best of luck to our club player Cormac Leane and the Kerry minors in Croke Park on Sunday. Peter Keane has done wonderful work preparing these young footballers. Lets hope they are duly rewarded. Under 8’s: The future of ladies football certainly looks bright in Milltown Castlemaine -with our under 8 girls giving a brilliant display of their football skills against Laune Rangers, on Thursday last. Well done to the girls and to their mentors who have coached them throughout the year and to the Laune Rangers team for a great game. A special thanks to the parents for their continued support and encouragement. Under 16: Well done to our U16 panel who have qualified for the county final with a great win over Glenflesk on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-11.
