Question
My partner and I are expecting a baby in September. Can I claim the new Paternity Benefit? Are there any other benefits I can claim? Answer
Paternity Benefit is a new payment for employed and self-employed people who are on paternity leave from work and covered by social insurance (PRSI). The PRSI classes that count for Paternity Benefit are A, E, H (with the exception of serving members of the Defence Forces) and S (self-employed). Paternity Benefit is paid for two weeks (in one block) and is available for any child born or adopted on or after 1 September 2016. You can start paternity leave at any time within the first 6 months following the birth or adoption placement. If you are already getting certain social welfare payments, then you may get half-rate Paternity Benefit. You must notify your employer four weeks before you intend to go on paternity leave (12 weeks if you are self-employed). You must provide proof of the expected date of birth (this is a certificate from your spouse’s or partner’s doctor confirming when the baby is due) or confirmation of the birth if you are applying after the baby has been born. In the case of adoption, you must produce a certificate of placement. Paternity Benefit is available from 1 September 2016. You can apply online at mywelfare.ie for Paternity Benefit from 5 September 2016 (your payment will be backdated if necessary). You must have a Public Services Card to apply for Paternity Benefit. You can also claim up to 18 weeks of unpaid parental leave from work (until your child’s eighth birthday - or 16th if they have a disability). Both parents have a separate entitlement to 18 weeks’ parental leave. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Rory D’Arcy, chairman of the board of trustees, welcomed what he described as a new development in the partnership with the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The partnership has been in operation for more than 50 years. Michael Ring, Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, signed on behalf of the State and Mr D’Arcy signed on behalf of the trustees. The board of trustees of Muckross House is a voluntary body with charitable status. The trustees share a common interest in the preservation of Muckross House in particular, as well as in the history and

At the prompting of the first board of trustees, led by the late Dr Frank Hilliard, Muckross House opened to the public as a folk museum on June 14, 1964. Since then, the board of trustees has been involved in the management of this magnificent House. This latest agreement, which covers the next five years, continues the successful partnership approach built up by the State and previous boards. Mr D’Arcy said it is a fine example of what can be achieved with the goodwill and endeavour of the community

THRESHING CANCER is a charity/club in the Mid-Kerry area which has held vintage threshing days on the farm of Brendan Ferris in Beaufort, to raise money for Recovery Haven, the Oncology Unit at Kerry General Hospital & the Hospice Room at St Joseph’s Home, Killorglin. Since its inception in 2013, Threshing Cancer has raised €76,000 in total for its three beneficiaries. The second oldest method of threshing on display is flail threshing, invented by the Chinese for rice and brought to Europe by the Romans for cereals like oats and wheat,” said Justine. “The first mechanical thresher was invented in 1784 cranked by hand and by pedal.” The event will incorporate guided tours and demonstrations of vintage threshing and agricultural machinery, working horses, and the secondary applications such as thatching. Traditional household artefacts such as butter churns and cream separators will be demonstrated & worked on the day. Threshing Cancer’s fundraising day will have something for every member of the family. Live entertainment will play throughout the day along with a dog show and horse show-jumping. A whole host of novelty fundraising activities for both adults and children. Kerry industry explores food potential for tourism at conference MORE than four in five food travellers are satisfied with Ireland’s food offering – this is just one of a number of insights that tourism businesses from across the country including Mark Murphy and Muireann Nic Giolla Rudian, Dingle Cookery School, heard at Fáilte Ireland’s first dedicated food tourism conference, ‘Food Connect’, which took place this week in Tankardstown House, Co. Meath. ‘Food Connect’ is a new two day conference, organised by the tourism development authority, where food tourism businesses got to explore the world of food tourism, hear the latest research, learn new food tourism trends, gain insights from international experts and take in mouth-watering food showcases. Speaking at the 'Food Connect' Conference, John Mulcahy, Head of Food and Hospitality with Fáilte Ireland, emphasised – “It’s clear that Ireland has a lot to offer when it comes to food. There is quality produce in locations such as Kerry and a great many experiences on offer for visitors when they come here. However, what is also clear from the research is that while people are pleasantly surprised by our food offering once they get here, perceptions beforehand may be lagging. “Our ‘Food Connect’ event is designed to tackle this very issue and the insights shared on how leading destinations position themselves in the marketplace will ensure that we as an industry can build on what we have so that it whets the appetite of potential visitors for many years to come.” Among the research discussed at the conference are the results of the World Food Travel Association 2016 Food Travel Monitor which shows that 77% of holidaymakers were satisfied or very satisfied with Ireland’s food offering. This satisfaction rating increased to 83% amongst “food travellers”, whose prime motivations for selecting a destination are food and drink related activities. Developed in partnership with Fáilte Ireland the newly published research examines the perceptions of over 2,500 travellers in ten countries including Ireland.

Killarney Men’s Shed Boat Trip
Happy 30th birthday Nell lots of love from your Godson Timmy
A group of Killarney “shedders” took to the water recently under the stewardship of the infamous Charlie Fleming who is a renowned boatman and author of many good stories. The first stop was Inishfallen Island. This was a first for some of the group, but another member Mike O’Connor and expert on nature was on hand to provide expert knowledge on the bio diversity on the island. After a relaxing time there, the group went on to Dinish for a while before finally docking at Glena Cottage. While the day started off in beautiful sunshine, the weather turned bad, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the group. In high spirits and wet clothes, the men made their way to Glena
cottage to dry off a little and cook some wellearned food. The main lesson to be learned there was to ensure to bring a lighter as the task of getting a fire going proved somewhat difficult to say the least. This was a very eventful outing and those involved and many more can’t wait for the next trip which is just on the horizon. “Killarney Men’s Shed” provides a friendly and homely welcome to men of all ages and is open every week day for anyone who may have a few hours to spare and is located on Upper Lewis Road. If you feel you have an interest in joining, be sure to call as there is always a big “Cead Mile Failte” for new members.

GLENBEIGH lady Gemma O’Connor is sharing her first-hand experience of meningitis and septicaemia during national Meningitis Awareness Week September 19-25) to ensure people are aware of the symptoms, know to be vigilant and act fast. Gemma contracted meningococcal septicaemia when she was 16. “The doctor told my parents I had only ten minutes to an hour to live but thankfully I survived. Meningitis is a very serious and fast developing disease,” said Gemma. “That’s why it’s so important that everyone knows the symptoms of meningitis, trusts their instincts and seeks medical advice without delay.” Meningitis Awareness Week is run by Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF). The charity estimates that there are around 200 cases of meningitis and septicaemia every year in the Ireland. They are deadly diseases that can strike without warning, killing one in ten, and leaving a third of survivors with life altering after-effects ranging from deafness and brain damage to loss of limbs. Babies, toddlers and young adults are most at risk but the disease can strike at any age. From December 2016 babies born on or after October 1, 2016, will be routinely offered a vaccine to protect against MenB however there is no catch up campaign planned for older children. Monika Marchlewicz, Ireland manager of Meningitis Research Foundation, said: “We are extremely grateful to Gemma for helping to raise awareness during Meningitis Awareness Week. MRF funds vital scientific research into the prevention, detection and treatment of meningitis and septicaemia but there are still some forms of the disease which are not covered by vaccines so it is vital that people are aware of the symptoms. We encourage everyone to be vigilant and to get medical help if you spot the symptoms.” Check that you know the symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia at www.meningitis.org/symptoms and share the Meningitis Awareness Week campaign (www. meningitis.org/maw2016) with everyone you know using #MRFAwarenessWeek. For any questions about meningitis, septicaemia and vaccinations that can prevent the diseases call MRF’s Freefone helpline on 1800 41 3344 or log on to www.meningitis.org.
Six tips to help you stay carbon monoxide safe in your home
IRELAND’S fifth annual Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week takes place from Monday 26th September to Sunday 2nd October this year. Each year, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide and highlight the measures that can be taken to prevent it. Carbon monoxide, often known as the ‘silent killer’, is colourless, odourless and very difficult to detect. It can kill in less than three minutes. On average, six people in Ireland die every year as a result of unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning and many more become ill as a result of exposure to it. Here are the top six tips for staying carbon monoxide safe in your home. 1) Know where it comes from: CO can be produced by any fuel when burned – coal, turf, oil, gas or even wood. 2) Service appliances: Have fuel burning appliances serviced annually by a Registered Gas Installer, Registered Oil Technician or a qualified service technician for your fuel type. 3) Chimneys, flues and vents: Keep vents and flues clear and make sure that rooms have proper ventilation. Ensure chimneys are swept annually. 4) Know the danger signs: Staining, sooting or discolouration around appliances or condensation or dampness on walls and windows in the room once the appliance is lit. 5) Symptoms: Unexplained headaches, dizziness, nausea, drowsiness, particularly when a fuel burning appliance is on could be the result of carbon monoxide. Other clues include others in the property (including pets) suffering from the same symptoms and symptoms improving when you are away from the property. 6) Alarm: Have at least one audible carbon monoxide alarm installed in your home and anywhere else you burn fuel, to protect you and your family.

Grace Notes Music affecting people
Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley on the power of music making
I HAVE to admit that I, like many people these days, am guilty of mindless Facebook scrolling. I spend most of my time sharing posts about missing pets and watching funny dog videos. I am quite the animal lover! Most days I couldn't tell you what I've actually seen on social media but this week I saw something that really touched me. I watched a video of a young child singing. What is so unusual about that you might ask? Well, this child was disabled and had quite apparent and severe learning difficulties, but that did not stop her from doing what she loved. This young girl sang
the very difficult 'I Will Always Love You' with such power and control that I was left completely awestruck. What was even more beautiful was the fact that, even though she was clearly more mimicking the sound of words than actually singing them, she was able to communicate in such a powerful way. The sound of her voice was so special and I was really forced to think about how lucky I am to work with young singers every week. Music is a universal language that can help young people express themselves or communicate in ways that may otherwise have been
impossible for them. I have seen some of the shyest youngsters flourish and grow through the medium of song. I always say that once you have mastered a song you almost feel invincible, even if just for a fleeting moment. I ask all of you who have children or work with young people, let them make music! This 'music' does not need to be beautiful or perfect. Once a person, whatever their age, can express themselves this way, encourage it. Sometimes a person can be locked inside themselves and it might just take a simple melody to release them, be it even just for the duration of one song. I believe there is a song in everyone's heart which must be heard. Help someone find theirs today.

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS
LUKE 16:19-32: The first of the faults attributed to the rich man is his insensitivity to the abject poverty of those around him. When have you discovered that it is when you are aware of the needs of those around you and seek to make some response that you bring out the best in yourself? The second fault attributed to the rich man is the way he ignored the word of God coming through Moses and the prophets. How have the gospels, the scriptures or your faith opened you up to a deeper and more satisfying perspective on life? Some people look to the spectacular for a sign of God’s presence and action. For Jesus, the lessons we need are not to be sought in the spectacular, but in the ordinary things of everyday life. Where have you found sacraments of God’s presence in the world around you? John Byrne, OSA
THE WALL
THE image of a formidable wall struck me as I prayed with this scripture. A wall made of an obsession with greed, selfishness, wealth, power, prestige. This wall, built by the rich man, over time, created such blindness that he became trapped in the illusion of temporary wealth, unable to hear God’s call. This self-made wall follows him to his death where in the afterlife he experiences a reversal in his fortunes and is now suffering. He now cannot break it down. Are there times when I am so in my own bubble that I fail to see those in need? Do I avoid making eye contact with a homeless person as I rush by for example? We are called to open our eyes and hearts and be the change. Siobhain Tighe
THE RICH MAN AND LAZARUS
LAST Sunday’s Gospel reminded us of what economics according to God looks like – it spoke of a redistribution of wealth by a manager who realised that material wealth is only temporary; what we do with that wealth and how we distribute it is more important. This weekend’s parable is on a similar theme. The rich man is sorry, but it is too late for him. He had not come to his senses as the manager last week had done. The rich man is unwilling to change; even in the afterlife he wants Lazarus sent, ordered, to go to his brothers to warn them. It is not proof or special signs that they need. Their vision has been blinded by wealth. They need to ‘see’ the poor who are at their gates. God’s economics means striving for a world where the poor man Lazarus can sit down at the same table as the rich man. It is not simply enough to comfort the poor and say to them that they will be rewarded in heaven. This misses the point. Luke is pointing us to a great reversal that is so central to this Gospel, a call to turn the world as we know it upside down. Jane Mellett

Give them a fair chance At long last someone in the Department of Finance has recommended to the Central Bank that first-time house buyers with a strong history of making rental payments should be allowed more flexibility on mortgage lending rules. At present, many prospective homeowners are finding it extremely difficult, even impossible, to save for a deposit on a future home while paying the high rent now being achieved by the private rental sector, at the same time. This is especially true of newcomers to the housing market with no equity from selling another property. The difficulties that these potential buyers experience is, in turn, putting pressure on the rental market because they are unable to move from rental to home ownership. Even couples with double incomes feel the pressure when rents are reaching, and exceeding, €1500 per month in many parts of our cities where our young people go to find employment. It’s only right that, having established a good record of consistent rental payment, their commitment should be recognised. It’s not so long ago that borrowers were able to secure 100% loans (and more in some cases) to buy houses and many had no record of saving or even of having the ability or the resources to paying any kind of money over a period of time. House buyers can borrow up to 80% of the value of a house under the Central Bank’s loan to value (LTV) rules & firsttime buyers may borrow 90%, up to a threshold of €220,000. That still leaves a massive €44,000 deposit to be raised. Quite a task. All home buyers are restricted to mortgages worth a maximum of 3.5 times annual salary under loan to income rules (LTI) but the banks are allowed some flexibility in applying the rules. The department believes the banks aren’t implementing the flexibility allowed. Lending institutions are leaving a margin between what is allowed and what is granted to ensure they don’t breach limits imposed by the Central Bank. Changes should be considered. People who have demonstrated the ability and the willingness to pay their way should be given every encouragement.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Global antibiotics 'revolution' needed Superbugs, resistant to antimicrobials, are estimated to account for 700,000 deaths each year. But modelling up to the year 2050, suggests 10 million people could die each year - equivalent to one every three seconds. Estimates put the figure at 4.7 million in Asia & 4.2 million in Africa. Europe, the Americas & Oceania make up another 1 million projected deaths unless something is done to prevent medicine "being cast back into the dark ages." Now, 193 countries of the United Nations are to sign a landmark declaration to rid the world of drug-resistant infections or "superbugs". Six years in the making, the international commitment could prevent 700,000 deaths a year, say experts. It is the fourth time a UN declaration has been reached on a health issue - following HIV in 2001, non-communicable diseases in 2011 and Ebola in 2013. Experts say treatment-resistant infections pose one of the biggest known threats to humanity today. Without urgent action, it is conceivable that simple infections could soon become entirely untreatable with existing drugs. The problem has been caused by over-use of antimicrobial medicines for humans, animals and agriculture. Lord Jim O'Neill, the economist who led the global review, said: "We need to inform in different ways, all over the world, why it's crucial we stop treating our antibiotics like sweets. If we don't solve the

Lovelorn Deer Pose a Traffic Threat It's autumn and in our forests and across our mountains, tensions are rising as the deer breeding season known as the ‘Rut; gets under way, the time of the year when male deer are driven by an urge to reproduce. From late September until early November the clash of antlers will be heard as males show off their virility to potential mates and, like gladiators entering an arena, they parade around showing off their armoury of antlers. While the ‘Rut’ is an amazing experience to witness it is also a time when there is an increased incident of road traffic accidents involving deer as male deer go in search of females and younger males are ousted by dominant males forcing deer to cross roads and motorways.

problem we are heading to the dark ages, we will have a lot of people dying. We have made some pretty challenging recommendations which require everybody to get out of the comfort zone, because if we don't then we aren't going to be able to solve this problem." Exactly how to encourage the drugs industry to make new antibiotics has been a long running problem - there has not been a new class of antibiotics discovered since the 1980s. A new antibiotic would be kept on the shelf for use in emergencies so a company could never make back its huge research and development costs. John Rex, from the antibiotics unit at AstraZeneca, said a new way of paying for drugs, as proposed in the report, was needed. He argued: "Such models should recognise antibiotics as the healthcare equivalent of the fire extinguisher - they must be available on the wall at all times and have value even when used only infrequently." The nations have committed to: •Develop surveillance and regulatory systems on the use and sales of antimicrobial medicines for humans and animals •Encourage innovative ways to develop new antibiotics, and improve rapid diagnostics •Educate health professionals and the public on how to prevent drug resistant infections

Views From Kerry And Around The World It’s a dog’s life – don’t give a dog a bone! It seems dogs can no longer be happy with a bone. Vets are now warning people not to give their dog a bone, because it could kill them. The PDSA veterinary charity has issued the warning after its vets and nurses reported seeing dozens of dogs suffering from damage to their digestive tracts and blockages caused by bone splinters or larger pieces. The advice appears to run counter to many dog owners’ assumption that their pets benefit from chewing on raw or cooked bones as a way of absorbing calcium and other nutrients and cleaning their teeth. But Rebecca Ashman, a senior vet with the PDSA, Britain’s leading veterinary charity, said: “We don’t recommend bones as treats because unfortunately our vets and nurses regularly see dogs with digestive tract damage and blockages caused by splinters or larger pieces of bone being swallowed and becoming stuck.” She added: “Surgery is usually needed to remove any blockage and in some cases, the damage is so serious that it can be fatal. Similarly, if they swallow a large piece of rawhide chew this can become stuck and cause serious problems.” Several pet food firms in the UK market raw bones as being “the perfect addition to a raw or natural diet, adding texture and variety as well as a host of nutritional benefits to a complete and balanced meal” for both cats and dogs. Latest figures from the PDSA showed that last year its hospitals treated 59 dogs who swallowed bones, although no figures for injuries or fatalities were available.
The charity’s warning has been echoed by the British Veterinary Association. Its junior vice president, Gudrun Ravetz, told The Telegraph: “Cooked bones are dangerous to cats and dogs and vets routinely see animals who have consumed them, whether through being fed the cooked bones directly or from finding them whilst scavenging through bins. In many cases the animals will require surgery to remove bone shards, splinters and blockages, but it can also prove fatal. We ask owners to never feed their pets cooked bones, and to also dispose of any bones left over from their own meal safely and securely to avoid pets seeking them out again.” She added: “If owners feed their dog raw bones we would recommend speaking to their veterinary surgeon to understand the risks and to only do so as part of a balanced diet. Handling raw meat and bones can also have risks for human health. We would not advise feeding cats raw bones.” Louise Lee, of the Blue Cross animal welfare charity, backed the warning, saying: "If large chunks are bitten off chews or bones then they can lodge in the mouth, the bowel, or worst of all, the oesophagus. Bones stuck in the oesophagus are particularly difficult to remove and can kill, as can any blockage." Vets have also warned of the dangers of giving dogs rawhide chews, made from the skin of an animal. As well as being produced, in some cases, by using harmful chemicals such as bleach, hydrogen peroxide and even arsenic, rawhide chews can also pose a danger of chocking the animal.
Garda Commissioner renews information appeal as Garda Adrian Donohoe gets posthumous medal The Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan has renewed appeals to anyone with information on the murder of Detective Adrian Donohoe to come forward. Detective Donohoe is being honoured today for the exceptional courage and bravery he showed in protecting others. He was killed in the line of duty during a robbery at Lordship Credit Union in Co. Louth in January 2013. Commissioner O'Sullivan, who awarded Detective Donohoe the Gold Scott Medal this morning, said: "You know I am very confident of the levels of co-operation that we are getting, not alone from our collegaues in the Police Service of Northern Ireland, but also from collegaues internationally. "It is absolutely our determination that the people that murdered Adrian will be brought to justice." Also speaking at the Ceremony in Templemore today, Policing Authority Chairperson Josephine Feehily said: "I congratulate the members of the Garda Síochána who were recognised today for the bravery they have shown in protecting our Community.

Composting grass cuttings and garden waste
Killarney Municipal Officer Micheal Ó Coileáin explains how to compost garden waste
WHEN it comes to your garden, there are some great ways to reduce the amount of garden waste you generate. In Ireland each year, we throw out nearly 40,000 tonnes of garden waste, much of it being grass clippings. While the Brown Bin collection of organic material is welcome throughout Kerry, it doesn’t make much environmental or financial sense to pack your brown bin with grass cuttings and hedge trimmings. Ideally these should be composted in your garden if space allows and the brown bin used for food waste only. Here are two methods to help you cut down on the garden waste we generate, in particular at this time of year. Mulching or “sheet” composting mimics nature’s way of recycling nutrients within our ecosystem. Like a forest floor where leaves, twigs and branches fall to the ground and break down over time, mulch provides a layer of protection for the soil. In addition, the decaying material feeds the ecosystem of microorganisms, worms and insects allowing this diverse community of organisms to thrive. As the materials break down further, nutrients are released and become available to plants within the soil. Mulch is often used in garden paths but more often around perennial shrubs and trees to suppress weed growth, hold in soil moisture, prevent erosion and slowly release nutrients to the soil. This system works well with shredded brushy materials such as tree trimmings or shrub prunings, leaves, grass cuttings and unscreened compost GrassCycling is the natural recycling of grass by leaving grass clippings on the lawn when mowing. Once on the ground, the clippings, which contain 80-85% water, decompose quickly returning valuable nutrients like nitrogen back into the soil. However, there is a little more to GrassCycling than that. You may need to de-thatch and aerate your lawn every year or two to ensure that it works properly. But remember, leaving cuttings on your lawn all season long provides the same level of nutrients as one fertiliser application per year. GrassCycling is simple, easy and it works! If you have a large lawn, GrassCycling will significantly reduce the amount of materials you are handling for collection or for home composting. The cuttings reduce the need for both water and expensive fertiliser. People who GrassCycle, spend up to one third less time cutting their lawns but remember, don’t cut your grass too short. You leave it a bit longer than normal so the clippings are not too big.

HONDA says, 'Petrol engines will go extinct, hydrogen is motoring's Holy Grail' Honda Civic development leader, Mitsuru Kariya believes hydrogen fuel cell technology is the ultimate goal for motoring. As Honda unveiled its brand new Civic, the company talked of its vision of where the future of motoring is heading – revealing its belief traditional engines will die out and how hydrogen is the Holy Grail. As major manufacturing rivals increasingly roll out electric or hybrid vehicles it comes as a surprise that Honda, being steeped in technological innovation, is chugging behind without one to show off themselves. That is all changing, of course, with plans for a fully electric vehicle touted for a 2017, and a Hybrid Accord (and possibly Civic, too) also on the cards for next year. Honda revealed that it's not just focusing efforts on electric to keep up with rivals but believes the traditional engine is on the path to extinction. While Honda sees electric vehicles as the future for now, back in
2008 Honda introduced an alternative energy vision in the form of its hydrogen fuel cell, the Clarity. The idea of running a car on nothing but the most abundant element on the planet and emitting nothing but water with a mileage range as long as that of petrol or diesel was like science fiction. But things have gone a little quiet on this potentially planet-changing front, so has hydrogen fuel cell technology been kerbed in favour of electric? Honda acknowledged that hydrogen is the answer; the perfect solution to our depleting fossil fuel reserves, but identified that it's hugely dependent on infrastructure and the energy supplier. "Electrification is currently the most popular and best solution but it's also short-term. Honda still believes hydrogen and the fuel cell technology will be the ultimate propulsion for the long-term future, but electric is very important to fill that gap until that time for the mass market." Until that time, the hydrogen Holy Grail will continue to remain behind Honda's garage doors.

Citroen C3 WRC Concept CITROEN Racing is preparing its return to the FIA World Rally Championship with Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle, this week revealing its C3 WRC Concept ahead of the Paris motor show. The concept gives a first look at just what Citroen’s 2017 WRC entry will look like. Designed by the Citroen Style Centre in partnership with Citroen Racing, the model is based on the newly announced C3, adding extra width and length thanks to the added aero fitted. Power comes from a bolstered 280kW version of Citroen’s 1.6-litre turbo-petrol four. Stylistic elements of the road-going version – including the two-level illuminated logo, two-tone canopy and canopy accent – remain, as do the dual chrome chevrons that extend down towards the LED daytime running lights. The model is 25kg lighter than its derivative. The race-ready Citroen C3 WRC will compete for the first time at the Monte-Carlo Rally in January 2017. Team Citroen has previously won eight manufacturer’s titles and 96 race wins.
Nissan shows off NV300 van
NISSAN has revealed its NV300 delivery van at the Hannover commercial vehicle show in Germany this week. Created to replace the old Primastar and plug the gap between the current NV200 and larger NV400 models, the new NV300 has been created as part of a joint venture with Renault, Fiat and Opel. Created to carry up to three standard Euro-sized pallets, the entry-level is said to have a load bay 110mm longer than the Primastar it replaces with the space in the rear ranging from 5.2-8.3 cubic metres depending on wheelbase. Nissan says it will also offer a longwheel base people mover version that
BRENNANS
can carry up to nine people. New tech for the NV300 include LED roof lights, trailer sway mitigation, rear view camera and a new tyre pressure monitoring system. Just one engine will be offered – the Qashqai’s 1.6-litre diesel that comes with 70kW, 88kW, 92kW and 107kW. Claimed to have the lowest costs in its class, with the nine-seat Combi able to average 5.6L/100km, all versions will come with 40,000km service intervals and come with a five years/160,000km warranty. On sale in Europe this November 2016.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Sleeping out in Cork Gaol for Focus Ireland ON OCTOBER 21 I will be sleeping out on the grounds of Cork City Gaol to shine a light on the issue of homelessness in Ireland today. I am joining others to raise funds to support the vital work of Focus Ireland and their aim to end homelessness in Ireland. Family homelessness has reached historic proportions in Ireland with more than 2100 children living in emergency homeless accommodation in Ireland often unable to get to school, rarely getting a home cooked meal and sinking into darkness. I don't want to accept this as todays landscape in Ireland so I'm joining my peers to make a difference. As a member of a local authority dealing with housing applicants that struggle to find homes to rent due to our rent caps and the lack of property to rent, people are couch surfing with the help of family and friend this is something that nobody should find themselves in this position. I hope to highlight this issue while at the same time raising much needed funds for a charity that deals with major problem. Please lend your support by sponsoring me https://www.justgiving.com/ Fundraising/niall-kelleher Councillor Niall Kelleher, Via email

SHEILA MOYNIHAN MEMORIAL SPONSORED WALK A cheque for €4000 was recently presented to Kerry Hospice following the 10th and final Sheila Moynihan Memorial Sponsored Walk, which as usual was held in May. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported us in any way. Those who have participated in fundraising ventures, those who have financially supported the events, those who have facilitated the ventures, our sponsors, the press who have helped us with advertising and all others who helped in many ways. The Sheila Moynihan account remains open at Rathmore Credit Union and should anybody wish to make a donation to Kerry Hospice Foundation the staff there will be pleased to assist. Donations can also be made to any committee member. We look forward to your generous continued support. Míle buíochas. Donal O’Keeffe, Via email
Back tax issue I WAS very interested to read about Sean Kelly MEP concerns about dolphins in a recent edition of Killarney Advertiser (September 9). Perhaps Mr Kelly might offer his opinion on a concern that I and most Irish citizens have? A few short years ago, the Irish Government couldn't impose enough taxes on Irish citizens to keep the EU happy, universal social charge, local property tax, water charges, etc. Now all of a sudden our government finds it most offensive that 'we' be made collect €13 billion in back tax and they now say how dare the EU interfere in our taxation system! I'm confused, perhaps our MEP could clarify the government position for me? Brendan O'Shea, (taxpayer, voter, and tuna eater), Listry, Faha, Killarney

We are looking for people to help us by offering a foster home for a greyhound as a ‘half-way-home’ until we can find a permanent home for the dog. Rugby news and views with Liam Murphy travelled to Rodney Parade to Last Sunday, our Seniors were Minis etch a tough win against the due to take on Killorglin in this years McElligott Cup. However the match was postponed, so the lads are now in full training mode for the start of the Munster Junior League, which kicks off Sunday the 2nd of October with a trip to Dungarvan.
Our minis and youths continue to train at Aghadoe, a veritable hive of activity on a Saturday morning. It’s great to see so many parents making great use of the 1.6km track around our site.Last weekend saw the return of some household names to the Munster side as they
Dragons, in the Pro12. Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus made six changes to the squad who narrowly missed out to Cardiff, with stalwarts CJ Stander and Conor Murray making their return as the momentum builds ahead of a few tough
away matches within the next month, with trips to the Aviva to face Leinster and to the Stade Yves de Manoir to face Racing 92 in Paris. With tough November Internationals against the All Blacks and Australia on the horizon, vital game time is on offer. Keep posted next week for more. 23.09.16 Killarney Advertiser

Silent memories keep you near As time unfolds another year Out of our lives you may be gone But in our hearts you still live on.
The years may wipe out many things But this they’ll wipe out never, The memory of those happy days When we were all together. We think of her in silence Her name we oft recall, But there’s nothing left to answer But her picture on the wall. Just when her life was brightest Just when her hopes were best, God called her from among us To a home of eternal rest.
We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. So rest in peace dear loved one, And thanks for all you’ve done, We pray that God has given you, The crown you’ve truly won. Always loved and remembered by Pauline, Denny and Kevin.
To my Dearest Darling Nana, Up in Heaven, high above, I know today you’re with us all And sending all your love. And bid you one last goodbye, Celebrate the life you’ve had, You’ll never be forgotten Nana, I’ll just close my eyes and see your smiling face and feel your love, And you’ll be close to me. It was your time, the angels came, And placed you with the best. So Dear Nana, up above, Although you’re no longer here, In our hearts is where we will keep you forever more. Forever you’ll be near.

2nd anniversary Guerin
Thinking every day of Cornelius, a beloved husband to Catherine, loving father to Ella and Connie, loved son of the late Cornelius and Cathy Guerin and beloved brother of Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy and Denis Who very sadly, and too young left us on 22nd September 2014. Benedictus by John O’Donohue (1956 - 2008) For Cornelius On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets in to you, may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green, and azure blue come to awaken in you a meadow of delight. When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and a stain of ocean blackens beneath you, may there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home. May the nourishment of the earth be yours, may the clarity of light be yours, may the fluency of the ocean be yours, may the protection of the ancestors be yours. And so may a slow wind work these words of love around you, an invisible cloak. to mind your life.

Ye were hard-working, All we have are memories of ye both. At least they were of happier times when we were together. Our family chain has been broken but the chain will eventually join up again. All we can do is visit your graveside and think of happy moments we had. God’s garden must be beautiful as He only takes the best. Sadly missed and never forgotten by your son and brother Denis, his wife Sheila and family and the extended Breen family. challenge at Deerpark on Saturday. The team captained by Hugh O’Sullivan was Ger O’Connor, Jerry O’Sullivan, John Murphy, Paul Cronin, Dan Joe Aherne, Tom O’Reilly and Brian Sweeney. After the conclusion of the two absorbing games, both teams enjoyed a most delicious meal in the restaurant during which the club manager Tom Twomey extended a special welcome to both teams. A special word of congratulations to the Newmarket club for having the course in perfect condition. While slightly disappointed with the result, Deerpark captain Hugh O’Sullivan is optimistic that the result will be reversed next time out and will be organising special team coaching sessions during the months ahead. Killarney Athletic
Results: Munster Junior Cup Killarney Athletic 3-1 Inter Kenmare. Athletic started their Munster Junior Cup clash with Inter Kenmare on a damp Sunday morning by scoring within three minutes from a corner Shane lynch rising highest to score at the front post. Athletic could have and probably should have scored a few more with Conor Farrell hitting the woodwork, Adam Moynihan having his shot blocked and Chris O’Meara blasting a good chance over in the dying minutes. A great team performance. Denny Division 1B Killarney Athletic B 2-3 A.C. Athletic B
Having played great football in the first half and taking a 2 goal lead thanks to goals from Flor McCarthy and J.P. Mullins, Athletic will be bitterly disappointed to concede 3 very sloppy goals to gift A.C. the 3 points. Plenty of work to be done in training and the boys will be looking to bounce back with a positive result this week. U14 Athletic travelled to Ballyhar for their first game of the season. Ballyhar had the better of the opening exchanges, with man of the match Darragh Doolan keeping Athletic in the game with some fantastic saves. Down at half time, a few changes pushed athletic on with Pa Komosa doing really well at the back. Athletic were rewarded for their hard work when Aaron O’Sullivan scored in the second half. As the game pushed on, Athletic tired & the final score line flattered our opponents. Other players to impress were Jack Lynch, Ciaran Cronin, Conor Horgan & Rian O’Brien. Killarney Celtic
Stetsons and Stilettos Killarney Celtic in conjunction with the INEC are looking forward to seeing everyone on what should be a fantastic night this Friday from 7.00pm at ‘Stetsons and Stilettos’, the ultimate Garth Brooks Experience featuring Trevor Smith and local artists. As well as a superb concert, with proceeds going to little Amy O’Connor, who is bravely battling illness, there will also be loads of fancy dress and novelty acts with some high profile personalities riding the bull – or trying to, anyway! Congratulations Warmest congratulations from everybody at Celtic to Brian and Eva Spillane on their new arrival into the household. Congratulations also to the victorious Kerry minors, many of whom wore the Celtic jersey in their time. Killarney Celtic Golf Classic The Club Golf Classic at Beaufort Golf Club had been changed to Friday October 7th - tee times from 1.30pm and Saturday October 8th from 7.00am. Contact Tim Lyne on 086 0522506 to book tee times. The date has been changed due to un-
foreseen circumstances. Please support as it is a very important fundraiser for the club. New Season With the new season starting shortly, the club would love to hear from any partners who would like to be associated with our great club and sponsor a set of gear for one or more of our Underage teams. Killarney Celtic had 16 teams from U11 to U16 in constant action last year, plus our U17 team, non-competitive coaching and blitzes for big numbers from U7 to U10, Football for All, and our Soccer Tots Programme. Contact any executive member or message us on facebook for details. Scheduled Training Times These are the initial training times for the various teams as the season gets underway – please note, these will be subject to change. Registration will be taken at all training sessions (€50 per child, €90 for two siblings, €120 for three or more). Volunteers Wanted One thing that Killarney Celtic are badly stuck for this year is help with our teams, especially at underage. Celtic has a proud and long-standing tradition of providing games and teams for players of all ages and abilities. We fielded 19 teams last year, plus non-competitive coaching and blitzes for big numbers from U7 to U10, Football for All, and our Soccer Tots Programme, but in order to continue to do that, we need volunteers to help make sure that everyone is playing in a safe and enjoyable environment. Full training and support will be given. Results Munster Junior Cup: Killarney Celtic 2 MitcheL’s Avenue 0 Our great start to the season continued as we won our first cup game thanks to two goals from Gary Keane. Mitchels are a good, organised side but in truth, with the devastating form of Celtic, it could well have been more. U16 SFAI Cup: Avenue United 0 Killarney Celtic 0 (Avenue won 5-4 on penalties) A heroic effort, but in the end it came down to the dreaded shoot-out, a very hard way for any team to lose out in a national competition. U14 Premier: Mastergeeha 1 Killarney Celtic 1 A real thriller of a local derby, with quality on both sides. Ruairi Dorrian was our goalscorer. U14 Division One: Killarney Celtic B 3 Killorglin 3 These two sides have shared some brilliant duels over the last couple of years; this may have been the best of them and a draw was a fitting result. U12 Premier: Killarney Celtic 2 Inter Kenmare 0 A cracking game, with Eoghan Crowley’s brace separating two very good sides. U12 Division Three: Killarney Celtic B

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Gents
The final of the Club championship will be played on Saturday the 24th of September at 1.30pm on Killeen, between Dermot Roche and Ger Lenihan. It should prove to be a most intriguing contest, as both players have been playing very good golf lately and with Ger at 16 handicap and Dermot at 12 handicap, then Dermot will have his work cut out to give those shots to a very seasoned campaigner who and has been a regular in the winners enclosure over the years. Having said that, Dermot himself is also a very seasoned campaigner and has been a stalwart of many club teams going back for many years, and he is a previous winner of this competition in recent years. It is hoped that a good number of our members will turn out to watch what should prove to be a very close encounter indeed. It was hoped to play the final of the Men’s Club fourball immediately following the singles final at 1.40pm, but it has unfortunately been postponed due to a conflict of interests for one of the players involved, and it will need to be rescheduled to take place in October. The Club sponsored competition on Sunday 18th of September was a team of four event, the competition was played in atrocious weather conditions, and the leading scores can best be described as being remarkable given the torrential rain and high winds
killarney notes which prevailed all morning and well into the afternoon. The leading teams were among the “tried and tested” combinations that regularly feature in these type of events, and the results were as follows. 1st Sean Goulding (12), Donie MacSweeney (14), Eddie MacSweeney (16) and Padraig Griffin (17) with 102 points. 2nd John Hickey (13), Dermot Roche (13), Neilus O’Regan (17) and Dan Moynihan(18) with 98 points 3rd Philip O’Connor (11), Dan Doona (11), Steven Broderick(14) and Dermot O’Sullivan (18) with 97 points.
Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club
The Annual Mar Loughlan competition took place in fine conditions last Sunday -Anglers from the many clubs participating hunted in all locations about Lough Lein and presented themselves and their catches at the Kerry Way for the weigh at 7.15pm Sean and his Staff ensured that all anglers shared numerous baskets of hot food while the task of weighing and recording was conducted - plenty of banter echoed about until calm descended for the results. The overall winner was announced as Owenabue Angling Club with Killarney Salmon and Trout in second place, a mere 147 grams short (not even the weight of an average lake trout !). Our top five rods on the day were as follows :
1) DJ O’Riordan 2) Mick Lenihan 3) Liam Buckley 4) Eamonn O’Leary 5) Gary Fleming DJ landed the heaviest trout and his catch was the heaviest individual of the day in the overall competition. He also was presented with the Michael Fleming Memorial Trophy by Gary Fleming on behalf of the Fleming family, as winner of our clubs competition. With this competition completed, Liam Buckley has earned the Angler of the Year Status, with his points total insurmountable coming up to the final outing of the year on October 2nd. That said there will be plenty of competition to contest the final trophies of the year and possibly keep them out of his reach as least ! The draw for teams in the annual competition will take place on Friday night the 30th September at 8.30pm in the meeting room at the International Hotel. Entries for the annual competition will close at this time as well.

Kerry Minors Complete Remarkable Treble Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews this Sunday’s All-Ireland Minor Football Final Kerry did what we expected of them when the minor footballers won the All Ireland title at rain soaked Croke Park on Sunday last defeating Galway on a score of 3-7 to 0-9. Much was expected of this team in view of their impressive displays all season. Jack O’Connor managed the team victories in 2014 and again in 2015. Peter Keane took over as bainisteoir in 2016 and retained the title in a seamless hand over from O’Connor. Thus, Kerry have rewritten the record books. They have 14 All Ireland titles to their credit ahead of Dublin on 11 and Cork on 10. Cork won 3 in-a-row in the 60s as did Kerry 1931 to 1933. However, Kerry are the only county to complete the remarkable treble on two occasions. Goals win matches. Goals win matches and this held true on Sunday last. Kerry scored 3, but Galway failed to find the net. Mind you they very nearly got an early goal when Billy Courtney was extremely fortunate to keep his net intact. Obviously, he presumed that the ball had gone wide from a Galway attack, but one of their forwards punched the ball across the goal. The goalkeeper was as surprised as anyone, but he was fortunate to realise the danger, as the ball was ready to roll over the line. That was a let off and he went on to play a steady game after that incident and collect his second All Ireland medal. Galway needed a goal, but they were set up so defensively that they never really looked like scoring a goal. In contrast Kerry raised 3 green flags and that kept them in the ascendency throughout the game. Diarmuid O’Connor was rewarded for perseverance when he followed Sean O’Shea’s lobbing ball in to deflect it past Cormac Haslam in the Galway goal for Kerry’s opening goal after 18 minutes. David Clifford, Kerry’s big star was well marked by a duo of Galway defenders, yet he was on hand to pick out a high lobbing ball before parting to David Shaw for goal number two. That saw Kerry lead by 2-1 to a single point from Galway, who had shot several wides in this period. A two point deficit Galway had their best period after half-time and cut the deficit to 2 points. They could well have been level only for the fantastic work rate of Dara Moynihan. The Spa man was a worthy winner of the accolade, man of the match. His energy was remarkable and he also scored 2 valuable points. Galway were still in contention with 10 minutes left in the game. Enter David Clifford in the 53rd minute, when he unleashed his real class that has been so evident all year. He picked up a pass from David Naughton well out from goal on the Cusack stand side and set off on the attack. Several Galway defenders tried to dispossess him, but he jinked his way through the Galway defence. Earnan McDonagh tried to cut him off, but the Fossa man could not be stopped and then he unleashed a screamer of a shot from 25 yards. There was nothing Haslam could do to deny the Fossa man. Goal number 3 for Kerry and that really killed off the Galway comeback.
Congratulations to this brilliant team, also to bainisteoir Peter Keane and his back room team of Chris Flannery, Pádraig Murphy, Tommy Griffin and Kilcummin’s James Foley Na Fóirne Kerry: B Courtney; D Naughton, N Collins, G O’Sullivan; M Potts, D O’Brien, M Foley; M Breen, M Ryan; D O’Connor, S O’Shea, D Moynihan; B Friel, D Clifford, D Shaw. Scorers for Kerry: D Shaw (1-1); D Clifford, D O’Connor (1-0 each); S O’Shea (0-2 frees), D Moynihan (0-2 each); N Collins, C Linnane (0-1 each). Referee: C Branagan (Down). Great comeback by Mayo sends game in to a replay Goals win matches, as we saw in the minor game at Croke Park on Sunday last, but not in the senior final, especially if you don’t score them yourself. It was only fitting that Cillian O’Connor should score that remarkable last gasp equaliser to bring the Mayo tally to 15 points, just enough to force a replay on tomorrow week. Dublin were credited with those two first half goals, own goals by the Mayo defenders for a total of 2-9. If Mayo had not conceded those two goals we wonder would they have won the Sam Maguire? I do not recall any team giving away two own goals in an All Ireland final. They still talk about the curse on Mayo football going back to 1951. Rain Conditions were bad as the rain fell incessantly. Add in the intensity of the play and the hard tackling so scores were hard to come by. Who would have expected Dublin to go for half an hour in the first half without scoring? They can thank the two gifted goals to keep them ahead 2-4 to 0-5 at half time. One expected Dublin to kick on from there in the second half, but it never really materialised. Somehow Mayo were hanging on by the coat tails as the game went in to time added on. It was all of 7 minutes and fair dues to Mayo they made the most of it ending with that Cian O’Connor equaliser. It really was a pressure kick as he was about 40 yards out from goal. He has not had the best of seasons, as he has had to battle against a troublesome injury in his struggle for full fitness. Mayo was fortunate that the right man was in the right place to kick the equaliser. He was Mayo’s top scorer shooting 7 points, 5 of these from frees. In contrast Dublin’s Dean Rock was not his usual reliable self from frees. He scored just 3 from placed balls and was unchar-

acteristically off target with another 4 efforts. He did score one point from play. Paddy Andrews Paddy Andrews came on for James McCarthy, who was black carded in the 25th minute and it proved a useful substitution for Dublin as Andrews shot two valuable points, when other Dublin forwards found it so difficult to score. Andy Moran and David Vaughan scored 2 valuable points each for Mayo, but the real disappointment was talisman Aidan O’Shea. The big man should have been thriving in the heavy conditions, but he never really got in to the play. They really needed him in the final quarter to stem the Dublin tide, but he never got to grips with the game and kicked a woeful wide in the time added on, when the outcome was really in the balance. Match ups The Mayo full back line of Harrison, Vaughan and Higgins did very well against the highly rated Dublin inside trio of Rock, Connolly and Brogan. The latter was held scoreless and the other duo scored just a point each from play. In the Dublin defence the most consistent players were Johnny Cooper at full back and wing back John Small. Cian O’Sullivan was also effective in the central defence role he plays for Dublin. Midfield was won overall by Dublin, especially another great display by Brian Fenton. Seamus O’Shea had a poor game throughout. In fairness to Tom Parsons he tried valiantly to curb Michael Darragh MacAuley in that match up. Much was expected of Lee Keegan who was given the job of marking the enigmatic Diarmuid Connolly. He played the Dublin danger man very well and he held him scoreless until well in to injury time when Connolly scored. Since he had to keep a close eye on Connolly, Keegan could not afford to launch any Mayo attack and they needed him to do
this, still he did his principal job very well. Goalkeepers The goalkeepers had contrasting fortunes. Stephen Cluxton had no shot to save during the whole game, but his kick-outs were as accurate as ever. This is really his forte. Contrast that with the fortunes of Mayo goalkeeper Davis Clarke. He had to pick the ball out of the net twice in that first half for those unfortunate own goals and it could have been 4 goals. He made two point blank saves in that first half. He also had to deal with some very tricky high ball hanging in the air. All in all another fine performance by the Mayo custodian. Replay The replay is fixed for October 1st at 5.00 pm, and an expected € 3 million bonanza for the GAA. Have Mayo blown their chances and will Dublin be as poor as that again? That is the 3 million euro question. You can expect all neutrals to pray for a Mayo victory. They have come so near before, especially in drawn games only to fail in replays. They were fortunate to get a second chance especially after gifting two first half goals to Dublin on Sunday last. Here’s hoping that Mayo will make the breakthrough in a week’s time. Dr Crokes
Under 12’s The Dr Crokes Black and Amber boys teams had two fine wins against Legion in Lewis Road on Friday evening. In a game of high quality, the Black team led by eight points with just eight minutes to go. The visitors piled on the pressure in the remaining minutes and the Crokes required a late Jack O’Sullivan goal to secure the win. The amber team had a few points to spare in the end with two late Shay O’Meara goals proving to be the difference in a keenly contested game. Well done to both Crokes and Legion teams mentors and players for two quality and sporting games on the night. Academy Lewis Road was a hive of activity on Saturday morning with an unbelievable buzz as we welcomed Éire Óg from Cork U10’s hurlers footballers, along with Glenflesk U6 and U8 boys football teams. Fossa
Congrats A massive congratulations to David Clifford who won an All-Ireland minor medal with Kerry on Sunday. David scored an absolutely brilliant goal, as is his trademark, in the 54th minute of the game to seal victory against a gallant Galway side. It was a proud day for the Clifford family and for Fossa GAA Club as David becomes only the third clubman to win a Celtic Cross, the others being the late Jimmy Falvey who won an U-21 medal with Kerry in 2008 and Donie Foley who also won an U-21 medal with Kerry in 1975. Juvenile Our under 12 boys were in Kenmare on Friday evening and came away with a win and a draw. In the A game our boys came out on top with a scoreline of 2-17 to 1-11 in a very good game. Patrick Lyons and Harry Kelly were best on the day with Harry scoring two fantastic points from over 30 meters. Sam Buckley had a great performance along with Dean Sheehan and Sean Dineen. The B team came from behind to draw and well deserved it. Luke Murphy, Rocco Sheehan, Tom Cahillane and Dara O’Brien did best for our boys. The under 16 boys had a great win away to Glenflesk on Tuesday night in the East Kerry Championship. Race Night Fundraiser Fossa Gaa are running a race night on Saturday 29th October towards funding the purchase and development of a juvenile playing pitch in 2.1 acres adjoining our current premises in Grotroe. It will be held in The Golden Nugget and over the next month club finance committee members will be asking for your support in the undertaking. Each horse costs €90 which can be bought outright or broken down into three at €30 for owner, €30 for trainer and €30 for jockey. Please support the club in the investment for this and future generations. Fashion Show The Fashion show in aid of Fossa Community Centre will take place in the Hotel Europe on 12th October 2016 at 7.30pm. All support welcome.
