"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

On the right road in Knockreer thanks to funding for resurfacing FREQUENT users of Killarney National Park whether on foot, on bicycle or jaunting car, have welcomed the recent improvement of the path conditions in the Knockreer section of the park. Members of Killarney Horse and Carriage Tours met up with local TD Danny Healy-Rae at the weekend having secured funding to resurface large tracts of paths. Eight kilometres including the Bamboo Path, River Walk, Reen and the jaunting car area at Ross Castle have all recently been resurfaced by the National Parks & Wildlife Service at a cost of over €300,000. The areas had been in very poor condition and funding was secured by the Independent TD and the National Parks & Wildlife Service. “Knockreer is a popular place for jaunting car trips but it is also hugely popular among walkers, joggers and families with small children. The new surface means everyone can now enjoy this area to its full potential,” said Billy Tangney, member of Killarney Horse and Carriage Tours.

EDITOR'S VIEW Art and wine connoisseurs put charity in the picture Residents seek green light for junction solution OUR feature focusing on the dangerous junctions branching off the Killarney bypass elicited a huge response over the past week. Residents have been keen to highlight the peril of the situation and Killarney Advertiser shares their views with you as we present the second of the series on pages 46 and 47 in this week’s edition. The area is home to two very busy Killarney sports clubs, the Killarney Legion GAA Club and Killarney Celtic FC, so as well as general road users there are many, many youngsters using this link all year round, whether on foot or being ferried to practice

sessions and games by their parents. As well as the safety issue, accessibility is a major concern. The suggestions keep coming as to what the solution should be. Let us know if you have an opinion on the matter by contacting us on newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie or 064-6632215. Meanwhile, congratulations to all the young local heroes who took a very well-deserved bow at the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Awards which unfolded in Tralee last Friday night. EVE KELLIHER EDITOR

THE last Thursday in November has become a byword for a fun night out for all ages as Killarney Rotary Club hosts it annual Evening of Wine & Art in The Malton Hotel. The recent event was as always incredibly popular and on Wednesday the club returned to the venue to present cheques to the deserving beneficiaries. Killarney Rotary president Angela O’Connor welcomed Lotte Lyne of the Stefan Lyne Foundation (the Barnardos Roots of Empathy Programme for local schools), St Brigid’s Secondary School Music Project, the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit, Tiernaboul and Coolick National Schools, Killarney Football for All, Killarney Swimming Club and Gaelscoil Faithleann. “We had a great night last November in The Malton,” said Angela. “The artists came out again in great numbers to showcase and sell their art." Angela paid tribute to event sponsor Daly’s SuperValu. "The team, including Denis Tucker and John Daly, do so much for this event every year," said Angela. "They provide the food, pastries and artisan breads to taste the cheese, and sponsor a wide range of wines. This year we tasted the very popular San Valentino Pinot Grigio and there was lots of positive feedback about the Graham Norton Sauvignon Blanc. The Daly’s SuperValu staff were on hand on the night to give their expertise in choosing wines. Thanks also to Barry of the Killarney Brewing Company and welcome to their new master brewer Michael Bank." Killarney Rotary Club was also delighted to host the Killarney branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation, which sold Christmas cards on the night. The raffle was co-ordinated by the Irish Pilgrimage Trust and the cloakroom was looked after the Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club. Question

I care full-time for a relative with a disability and I have applied for Carer’s Allowance. Although I am not yet aged 66 would I be entitled to a free travel pass, if I qualify for this allowance? Answer Everyone aged 66 and over living permanently in the State is entitled to the Free Travel Scheme. If you are under age 66 and registered for a Public Services Card, you will be awarded free travel with your Carer’s Allowance. You will be issued with a new Public Services Card which will also be your Free Travel Card. The card will have “F-T” printed in a yellow octagon in the top left-hand corner. If you have not yet registered for the Public Services Card, you will be asked to register before your Free Travel Card issues to you. The Public Services Card allows people to access a range of government services and payments and it will eventually replace the Free Travel Pass. In order to keep your entitlement to Free Travel, you must register for the Public Services Card when requested to do so by the Department of Social Protection. Your entitlement to Free Travel will be disallowed or withdrawn if you don't register. You must show your Public Services Card to the travel operator when you are travelling on public transport. (In some cases you may be asked to scan your Public Services Card. However, not all transport operators have this facility.) Note that people under 66 getting PRSI-based Carer’s Benefit are not entitled to a Free Travel Card. If you are living with the person you care for, you may also be entitled to the Household Benefits Package, which includes an electricity or gas allowance as well as a free TV licence. Only one person in a household can qualify for the package at any time. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Vote to help Killarney trees branch out for European award THE Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society have issued a “call to action” to vote for the Irish entry for the European Tree of The Year 2017. This Europe wide annual competition selects the tree/trees with the best story and the O’Flaherty Memorial Grove in Killarney has been selected as Ire-

land’s entry. The Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Grove in the Muckross Arboretum (Killarney National Park) was planted in 1994 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the WW2 Liberation of Rome and the role played by Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty’s Rome Escape Line which saved over 6000 people from cap-

ture by the Nazis. Voting commenced on Wednesday on the competition website www.treeoftheyear.org and voting closes at midnight on Friday night, February 28. Only one vote per e-mail address is allowed. “We need at least 30,000 votes to get us into the top three,” said chairman of the Hugh O’Flaherty Me-

morial Society Jerry O’Grady. “This is a great opportunity to promote the story of Ireland’s trees, Killarney National Park and the Hugh O’Flaherty story to a European audience. Please also ask all your friends and associates on social media to vote for Ireland’s entry.”

Expo organisers pull out all the stops for Kerry jobs showcase THE team behind Kerry Expo is all set to host the second annual event and have just launched the expo’s own website, www.kerryexpo.ie. Businesses operating in Kerry region are invited to register their interest via the website to exhibit at the Kerry Expo in the INEC, Killarney on April 9, said expo director Liz Maher. “The event promises a full day of entertainment, including food tastings and sampling, all blended together with an extensive range of business, recruitment, educational and business support showcasing,” added Ms Maher. “To those looking to visit the expo on April 9 the website will also offer free admission to registered visitors,” said the event director. Visitors to the expo who are over 18s must register for free admission, while under-18s are free, once accompanied by an adult. Kids can avail of the free entertainment throughout the day,” added Ms Maher. This week also saw the launch of Kerry Expo’s dedicated social media sites in LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter and organisers believe that digital media will help to promote the event to a wide audience and a broad demographic. Diarmuid O Sé, vice-chair of the Kerry County Board, said: “If we are to keep our players in Kerry they will need to be employed and by coming together we can achieve so much more. We can encourage the brain drain back to Kerry grounds and to do this, the links between ourselves, jobs and education is an absolute necessity.”

At the Kerry EXPO Website launch at The INEC, Killarney were front from left, Katie Larkin (Astellas), Elin Sorensen (GHQ), Paul Sherry (Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Vice-President), Liz Maher ( EXPO Organiser), Angela McAllen (Killarney Municipal District Area Manager) and John Dolan (Gleneagle Hotel). Walkers to remember Ian and raise funds for counselling service A POPULAR teenager who died by suicide four years ago is to be remembered by his family and friends who want to raise money for the Southwest Counselling Centre. Sixteen-year-old Ian O’Riordan from Maughantouring in Gneeveguilla was a gentle and handsome teenager who was a transition-year student at Ian O’Riordan. Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore. But life changed drastically when Ian died by suicide on January 14, 2013. To mark Ian’s 21st birthday, his mom, Eileen, is organising a fundraising walk in Gneeveguilla on February 11 at 3pm when she hopes to raise much-needed funds for the Southwest Counselling Centre. “It was the most devastating time for me and my family, brother, sister, school friends, who were all only children at the time,” said Eileen, “It was with the support and help of Southwest Counselling that these children got through this horrible time. I don’t think you ever get over it but you learn to cope and live with it." Ian is remembered as a gentle, handsome, and caring boy. An older brother to Melissa and Liam, he loved to play rugby, do rowing and horseriding and loved spending time with his friends. “He was the life and soul of every party,” Eileen added. “This 21st birthday remembrance walk means an awful lot to my family and will hopefully help more youths in the future through Southwest Counselling,” said Eileen. The 5k walk begins at 3pm and donations can be made on the day. Registration is €10 and will take place at Petros Bar Gneeveguilla from 2pm on Saturday, February 11, and the walk will begin at 3pm.

Kerry snapper puts his stamp on election count coverage H

IS quirky observation of the general election count in Killarney last year has won Kerry photographer Domnick Walsh a coveted award. Domnick snapped up second prize in the politics category of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) awards for his photograph of a voting badge stuck to the heel of a man’s shoe as Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae won his seat in the 2016 general election. The Tralee photographer gave the picture, taken at the count centre in Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre, the clever title “The vote worked for Heely Rae”. Domnick was among four Kerry snappers who found themselves in the picture last Friday as winners of the PPAI ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2017’ awards. This year saw the addition of two new awards to the com-

petition, ‘Multimedia’, for best use of video, which was awarded to Killarney native Bryan O’Brien. Tralee’s Brendan Moran, Sportsfile, won prizes in three categories, news, sports feature and portrait. Caherciveen photographer Stephen McCarthy, also of Sportsfile, won first and second prize in the sports feature category. The Press Photographers Association of Ireland ‘Press Photographer of the Year 2017’ Exhibition, featuring 124 prints, was on display in The Ballsbridge Hotel, Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, over the weekend. The exhibition then moves to The Library, at the RDS, Dublin 4, for two weeks. It will then go on tour, visiting selected venues nationwide, visit www.ppai. ie for exhibition tour updates and to view the full collection of winning and highly commended images.

Everyone urged to answer Killarney’s call

Ollie Hodges. PICTURE: JAMES CROMBIE/INPHO

AN IMPORTANT briefing on what has the potential to be an incredible opportunity for Killarney will be held in the town’s Malton Hotel next Tuesday evening, February 7. The open business meeting, organised by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, will feature a keynote address by Olly Hodges who is the bid manager for the Rugby World Cup in 2023. He will detail the current status of the bid and what inclusion as a venue could mean for Killarney, including the enormous publicity and marketing opportunities it would guarantee. Mr Hodges has been working closely on the

project with the Chamber as well as Kerry County Council, the Kerry County Board and the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee. At the event, new Chamber President Paul O’Neill will outline his priorities for the year ahead and detail what projects are being undertaken to enhance Killarney as a business town and a vibrant community. “The Rugby World Cup bid is so exciting and if Ireland is successful and Killarney is chosen as a host venue, an event of that magnitude would have enormous legacy potential,” said Paul. “The timing of the event would be ideal for Killarney and the whole of Kerry given that

it would run from mid-September to early November and, of course, a successful bid would be an incredible boost for Fitzgerald Stadium which would be significantly upgraded if Rugby World Cup games are to be played there.” The open business meeting in The Malton conference centre will commence at 6.30pm and, in addition to the President’s Preview and the World Cup 2023 bid discussion, there will be a buffet and wine for those in attendance. The admission for Chamber members is €15 and for non-members it is €20.

Trade union uses pedal power to generate cash for counselling centre A GROUP of intrepid cyclists and trade union members got on their bikes recently to generate cash for SouthWest Counselling Centre in Killarney. Every second year the Impact trade union holds a national conference, and an idea to cycle to raise funds from Dublin to the conference venue was hatched over 10 years ago by Dessie Robinson, assistant general secretary, Impact, and Eamonn Donnelly, national secretary, Impact. In 2016 the conference was held in Killarney and these cyclists were joined by fellow trade union members and raised a substantial amount for four charities of which SouthWest Counselling Centre was one. In the presentation of the cheque, for €8,000, Kevin O’Malley, Impact honorary treasurer and Kerry branch chairman, was filled with praise for the work that SouthWest Counselling Centre has done over 22 years, citing that often it goes unacknowledged after a client has been helped. The Kerry branch donated an additional amount as

a token of their appreciation. “The board of management, the staff and the clients of SWCC are very grateful to the Impact trade union, which showed another side to the union, which is very thoughtful and supportive

of charities, having raised over €100,000 in the five years these cyclists have raised funds whilst clearly having fun!” said Lindsay Fredman, CEO, SouthWest Counselling Centre.

Communions&Confirmations 2017

Catering to your needs THERE is a huge variety of choice available when it comes to hosting a celebration to mark a Communion or Confirmation in your home. Local catering companies are well placed to help you throw a party that will help you savour this special day with your nearest and dearest. Decide whether you want a sit-down meal or a buffet-style event and then take any ideas you have to the caterer who is perfectly placed to ensure the party is tailored to suit your child’s taste. Daly’s SuperValu, for instance, offers wonderful home-catering and party menu options to choose from.

HELPING CHILDREN PREPARE FOR THEIR CONFIRMATION THE celebration of Confirmation is a sacred and important moment on a long journey of faith development. Together with Baptism and First Holy Communion it opens the door to full membership of the Christian community. It is the beginning of the young adult’s ownership of their faith, supported and nourished by their family and their faith community. There are many ways you can help your child prepare for Confirmation and these are outlined in helpful detail on the Kerry Diocese’s website, www. dioceseofkerry.ie Practise your own faith regularly and encourage your child to do likewise. Attend Mass on Sundays and try to make attendance at Mass a family event. Praying at home is also advised, as is showing an active interest in your child’s religious work. Discuss the choosing of a Confirmation name and the choosing of a sponsor. Parents are also advised to share their memories of their Confirmation with their child.

Give a child a gift to cherish SEEKING the perfect gift for children making their Confirmation or First Holy Communion? If your child, godchild, niece, nephew, grandchild, or family friend is about to celebrate this landmark occasion, then a present that they will cherish for a lifetime would be very welcome. While money has been a traditional gift in Ireland, some may want to choose something a little personal, to remind the child of the sacrament and its importance.

These days, treasured keepsake gifts can be found to suit all budgets, from picture frames to inscribed jewellery, and from prayer books and rosary beads to a commemorative photoshoot.

Communions&Confirmations 2017

PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION THE “Do This in Memory” programme is a parish-based programme supporting parents/guardians with a child preparing for First Holy Communion. It highlights the importance of the Saturday evening/Sunday Mass as a celebration where we gather, are nourished by the Word of God and the Bread of Life, and are sent out to live the Gospel. It offers activities and resources for both parents/guardians and children to continue their preparation at home, mainly through the ‘Grapevine’ Newsletter. It offers the children the opportunity to engage in a special way in the Mass on these designated Sundays. It is a resource to parish communities to assist them in the preparation of children for First Holy Communion. It complements the school-based work in the context of the parish at worship together. It emphasises that the preparation of the children is the responsibility of the home, parish and parish. It has long been acknowledged that the most effective catechesis of children takes place when home, school and par-

ish each accept their share of responsibility. It also acknowledges the home as the most important and significant place, where the faith of our children is nurtured, nourished and sustained. See www.dioceseofkerry.ie for further information and valuable resources on helping prepare your child for his or her First Holy Communion.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Moments in Time

‘Investment in NPWS would have far more meaningful impact on our National Park'

PICTURE SUPPLIED BY MOMENTS IN TIME

YOU may have seen in recent days that the nation's five national parks, five nature reserves and the Wild Atlantic Way are to receive €500,000 by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with the National Parks & Wildlife Service for the development of tourism in these areas. This investment has been described by a cash windfall for Killarney National Park but when you apply a little bit of logic along with mathematics (which is by no means my strong point) proportionally this investment will not be as big as stated across all areas it's due to cover, but half a million euro is a bit more catchy for the headlines. The National Park is already highly developed for tourism and I don't think there's any need for further development especially given the premise of conserving the area much like the "wild" aspect of the wild Atlantic way won't count for too much in the near future as once properly wild locations are developed to "their potential". An investment in the National Parks & Wildlife Service in general would have far more longterm and meaningful impacts on the park itself with regard to maintaining the current rhododendron infestation, studying the parks deer populations and so on but this doesn't appear to be high an the agenda for our elected officials. Help Gardaí scale new heights in four-peak challenge A GROUP of 100 serving members of An Garda Síochána from all over Ireland have come together to organise and take part in a four-peak mountain challenge due to be undertaken in May 2017. The aim of the challenge is to promote mental health awareness within our organisation and in the wider community. The event is a three-day challenge where participants will climb the highest mountain peak in each of the four provinces of Ireland. Participants will be accompanied by serving officers from the NYPD, PSNI and Spanish Police who are taking part in and supporting the challenge. The event, named Garda 4 Peaks Challenge, will take place as follows:

•Day 1: Carrantuohill, Co Kerry – May 19 •Day 2: Mweelrea, Co Mayo, and Slieve Donard, Co Down – May 20 •Day 3: Lugnaquila, Co Wicklow – May 21

In undertaking the challenge, our aim is to generate conversation about mental health awareness among both our colleagues and members of the public and to promote the importance of mental health wellbeing in personal as well as work life. The challenge also aims to raise awareness of the supports that are available to those who suffer with mental health issues. We hope to use our country’s hillsides to showcase the beautiful natural resources that we have on our doorsteps and to promote how it can be so beneficial

in keeping our minds as well as our bodies healthy. The secondary aim of the Garda 4 Peak Mountain Challenge is to raise much-needed funds for Aware, to aid it in continuing its work engaging with community members in need of mental health services. The members of An Garda Síochána who are participating in the challenge aim to raise €50,000 through individual fundraising and sponsorship. All funds raised will be donated to Aware. Aware undertakes to create a society where people affected by stress, depression, bipolar and mood disorders are understood, supported, free from stigma, and are encouraged to access appropriate therapies’ (Aware Mission Statement). Aware relies on fund-

raising events such as this, as well as corporate and public donations, for 85% of its annual funding. Members of An Garda Síochána throughout Ireland are hugely supportive of a wide range of Irish charities each year, and this campaign offers the members of An Garda Siochána from all over the country the opportunity to join together. If you would like to support this Challenge in any way there are contact details below. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated for such a worthy cause. community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS MATTHEW 5:13-16: Jesus uses the image of salt as something that makes food tasty. Without it food can be tasteless. Who are the people who give zest to your life and make it enjoyable? For whom have you done this? When have you been particularly aware of your potential in this regard? The second image is that of light. Who have been the people who have been a light for you, particularly in moments of darkness? For whom have you been a light? Recall these experiences and give thanks. The images of salt and light can also be applied to communities to which we belong, a family, a parish, or other group. Thinking of the groups of which you are a member, how can their potential be enhanced to enrich the lives of members and offer them a guiding light? How can you make a contribution to this? John Byrne OSA, Veritas Books

MUSINGS WE NOW celebrate and practise the Eucharist in a society of many faiths and none. In celebrating, we recognise that when Christ offers himself for the world, he offers himself for all. In the words of the Prayer over the Offerings, “God sustains us in our frailty.” At every celebration of the Eucharist the memory and moment of betrayal and the breaking of that first Eucharistic community is present. At the very heart of the Eucharist we include and incorporate our own fragile brokenness and the searing, fractured brokenness of our world, precisely because it mirrors the brokenness of Christ himself. In the presence of the body of Christ we become the body of Christ. The Prayer after Communion reminds us that ‘we are made one in Christ’. Later this week, we mark World Day of Prayer for the Sick, as it coincides with the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. In the words of St Paul in his first Letter to the Corinthians today, he reminds us “that your faith should not depend on human philosophy but on the power of God”. Fr John Cullen, Veritas

SALT AND LIGHT IN THE Gospel we hear of two scenarios where salt is concerned: one is that we are called to be ‘salt of the earth’. What salt does for food, Christians are called to do for the world – to give life ‘taste’. You might recall someone who brought “taste” to your own life, encouraging you on your journey, offering hope, a new insight or project, someone you followed and learned from. What gifts did they bring? The other scenario in the Gospel today is where salt has lost its taste – how can it be restored? You might recall someone you placed great hope in, whether it be a family member, a public figure, a Church leader or politician; someone who had vision and inspired others. Yet the “salt” or the “taste” was lost. We see this all around us in our world, when someone’s potential is lost. There are many situations in our world today where people’s light is not allowed to shine. It is controlled, hidden, prevented from being used for the benefit of all because of jealousy or perhaps others are afraid of the consequences. Jesus tells us that these lights must shine, for all, and then we can give glory to God in heaven for the fruits it may produce. To help lights shine and to give flavour to the world is our task today. Another way of putting it might be: how are the effects of our encounter with Jesus Christ evident in our lives? Jane Mellet, Veritas

Saddle up to enjoy the e-bike experience By Eve Kelliher

WHETHER you enjoy a leisurely cruise to the shops or prefer to take to the wilds and experience challenging mountain bike trails, e-bikes can make your ride must more swift and enjoyable. The key point about e-bikes is that they are power-assisted, explains David O’Sullivans O’Sullivan Cycles on High Street which is now stocking a wonderful new range at various price points. The German brands Haibike (priced from €2,200) and Focus are popular choices, as is Giant, with e-bikes priced from €1650, or models from the Spanish company Orbea. In fact, O’Sullivan Cycles is the only stockist in Kerry of the sought-after Haibike band. I tried a Haibike mountain bike for size and was extremely impressed! As David explains, the more energy you invest in your pedalling, the more return you receive in the power stakes. “The Haibike mountain bike would be ideal for covering a route such as Ballyhoura,” noted David. “We also offer hybrids which are suitable for everybody. They are also excellent if you need assistance as you cycle.” Richard Greene, of Prima Sport, which is the Irish distributor of Focus e-bikes, added: “When choosing an e-bike try to go for a mid engine, as these are much more stable engines.” Call in to O’Sullivan Cycles and check out its e-bike collection.

CACI FACIAL: THE NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains how the CACI facial can benefit your complexion

CACI stands for computer-aided cosmetology instrument and a CACI non-surgical facelift works by using microcurrent technology. This sounds like it would be sore but, trust me, it isn’t at all. Teeny, tiny microcurrents are sent to the muscles in the area being treated. These microcurrents help to plump out lines and wrinkles, sculpt the cheekbone and jaw area, and re-educate the facial muscles so that they will sit tighter and not sag. The treatment boosts the collagen in the skin and gives a much younger looking complexion. As it's the ultimate CACI machine, you get treated to microdermabrasion treatment during this facial also. Having all the surface refined and the collagen and elastin production increased from the inside it gives the ultimate refreshing glow and lifting effect

to the skin. It finishes with a mask that is full of hyaluronic acid and collagen that give intense moisture to the skin, while at the same time it gives a soothing effect after the treat. Telephone Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966 for more information.

‘Lack of obstetrics theatre in Kerry hospital is major concern’ David O’Sullivan of O’Sullivan Cycles with a Haibike e-bike.

Killarney Advertiser 03.02.17

SPEAKING in the Seanad, Fine Gael Kerry Senator and Seanad Leas Cathaoirleach Paul Coghlan highlighted increasing local concern at the lack of an obstetrics theatre in University Hospital Kerry. Senator Coghlan said: “The lack of a dedicated obstetrics theatre in the hospital has become a significant risk factor and according to the HSE’s own assessment tool equates to an ‘extreme’ risk. However, they do state that the ‘risk is managed well’. He added: “In this day and age a ‘risk is managed well’ approach is just not acceptable. There is always the possibility that on a particular day the risk is not managed well and would end in tragedy for someone involved. Also those who are scheduled for minor surgeries are regularly having their operations cancelled at short notice because of an unexpected obstetric emergency. So there we have a double impact on patients as a result of having no obstetrics theatre. “We are now at a critical stage with this matter. Business cases have been submitted to the HSE from the hospital outlining the need for a theatre, but as of yet no action has been taken. “I don’t think a risk management approach is enough for one of our major regional hospitals. By providing an obstetrics theatre in University Hospital Kerry we would essentially be removing the ‘risk’ currently being ‘managed’. As I said, it only takes one minor mistake for managed risk to turn into tragedy.”

Kerry orchestra tunes up to take centre stage in National Concert Hall THE Kerry School of Music Orchestra is celebrating its 30th birthday by paying not one but two visits to the National Concert Hall in Dublin in 2017. The orchestra was set up under the banner of the Kerry School of Music in October 1987 under the direction of Adolf Packeiser. Adolf, from Bremen, was assistant principal of the music school in the city and musical director in the opera house before moving with his family to live in Kerry in 1982. The orchestra, which draws its members from all over the county including many from Killarney, has performed widely during its 30 years, appearing at the National Concert Hall on three previous occasions and travelling to Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Finland. “The school is now home the senior and junior orchestra, Kerry Chamber Orchestra and the Finlay Ensemble all of which perform on numerous occasions throughout the county every year,” said director Aidan O’Carroll. “A sig-

nificant number of the orchestra’s members come from the Killarney area with others hailing from as far away as Listowel and Tarbert, Dingle, Killorglin, Caherciveen, Castleisland and Abbeyfeale.” The combined junior and senior orchestras – 55 members in all – directed by Aidan O'Carroll, will participate in the 22nd Festival of Youth Orchestras organised by the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras in the National Concert Hall, Dublin, on Saturday, February 11. Eight orchestras have been chosen to participate in this year's festival which coincides with the 35th anniversary of the Kerry School of Music. In June the orchestras will take centre stage in the National Concert Hall in a special celebration of the School of Music’s 35th birthday entitled the Spirit of Kerry. The concert will feature present and former students of the school as well as outstanding musicians and singers from Kerry.

The Provocateur LET’S REPEAT THE WORDS OF O’FLAHERTY – ‘GOD HAS NO COUNTRY’ WE HAVE witnessed a weekend of distress in the airports of the US and elsewhere as a result of President Trump banning travel to seven Muslim majority countries and turning his back on the plight of refugees. No matter what a person’s faith, they deserve to be protected from conflict and helped to find safety. I would like to add my voice to all those appealing to President Trump to show grace and understanding to these people. This ban does not target terrorists; it targets vulnerable people and disproportionately those of Islamic faith. This cannot be defended and it should not continue. Only with understanding and cooperation can we hope to end the conflict and discourage terrorism. Of course, the Taoiseach should travel to Washington on our National Day. He has a unique opportunity to meet President Trump face to face and deal with all of the issues, including that of the 50,000 undocumented Irish in his own inimitable way. He is truly Ireland’s “trump” card and we can have every confidence in him. The Taoiseach also stated clearly that he does not agree with President Trump’s Executive Order on travel and that he will raise this issue with the President when he goes to Washington. President Trump would do well to remember the words of the late great Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty who worked so hard to protect and shelter those persecuted during World War II all over Rome. He helped save thousands of Jews, POWs and others. His saying is especially prevalent in this troubling time across the world: “God has no country.” We must show goodwill and be prepared to offer protection to all those in need. Senator Paul Coghlan, Fine Gael Kerry Senator and Seanad Leas Cathaoirleach, Ballydowney, Killarney Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? A A WEEKLY WEEKLY ROUND-UP ROUND-UP OF OF NEWS NEWS + + KERRY GOLF ON A PAR WITH THE BEST IN THE WORLD

Chris Berry, Trump International Golf Links & Hotel; Cormac Flannery, Killarney Golf & Fishing Club; Maurice O’Meara, Dooks Golf Club; Brendan Keogh, SWING (South West Ireland Golf); Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland; Noel Cronin, Waterville Golf Links; and Michael Fitzsimons, Fáilte Ireland, at the PGA Golf Merchandise Show in Orlando.

THIS county was well represented as Tourism Ireland’s golf promotional programme for 2017 kicked off in Orlando, Florida. Thirteen Irish golf and tourism operators – including Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, Dooks Golf Club, Waterville Golf Links and SWING (South West Ireland Golf Ltd., based in Tralee) – as well as three American golf tour operators, have joined Tourism Ireland at the PGA Golf Merchandise Show in Orlando, to highlight our world-class golf. The PGA Show is one of the biggest golf exhibitions in the United States, attracting more than 40,000 golf professionals and enthusiasts, as well as around 1,000 influential golf journalists, each year. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said: “The American golf market remains a priority for Tourism Ireland in 2017

and we will continue to promote the island of Ireland as a top golf destination, capitalising on the global success of our golfers including Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington, Shane Lowry, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell. “Golf is the world’s largest sports-related travel market and Tourism Ireland is working hard to drive home the message that a golfing holiday in Ireland is about much more than a round of 18 holes – the combination of our world-class golf and our unique brand of hospitality plays a key role in attracting American golfers to visit.” Tourism Ireland has an extensive programme of activity under way to promote golf on the island of Ireland in the United States this year – in particular highlighting the 2017 Irish Open at Portstewart Golf Club and the 148th Open which is set to take place at Royal Portrush in 2019.

Movie buffs to help fund life-saving project in Killarney THE classic movie The Dawn, which was written and directed by local man Tom Cooper in 1936, was the first talkie made in Ireland and now it is poised to help generate funds to help saves lives in Killarney. A series of special screenings in aid of the Heart of Killarney fundraiser concludes next Tuesday evening, February 7, at Cinema Killarney. Moviegoers were delighted to see it restored to its former glory at Cinema Killarney, owned by Mr Cooper’s grandson Tom Cooper, and a fortnight ago a series of weekly screenings commenced in aid of a project that aims to see old Irish telephone boxes used to highlight the locations of, and house, defibrillators. The first telephone box was established on Main Street in September and plans are in place for another, with the Woodlawn area proposed as the location of the next phone box. “We would like to say a

VIEWS VIEWS FROM FROM KERRY KERRY AND AND AROUND AROUND THE THE WORLD WORLD

DNA IS THE BLUEPRINT OF LIFE For years, scientists have had the ability to manipulate genes, says

Trevor O’Donoghue

AT THE turn of 2017 a team of scientists led by a professor Romesburg published a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in the US. The paper detailed their achievement of creating a semi synthetic life form. For years, scientists have had the ability to manipulate genes, and we see the benefit with improved medicines and disease resistant crops. We even had Dolly the sheep and glow in the dark rabbits. Genetic engineering has become almost commonplace. What Romesburg and his team have done however, is not just tinker with the genes, but they have actually gone much deeper and manipulated the structure of the DNA that makes up the genes. DNA is the blueprint of life. For want of a better analogy, DNA is made up of very long strings of four different chemical bases that can be represented by the letters G, C, T and A. All life on earth is based on DNA, and every living cell in every complex organism has at its heart chromosomes, made up many thousands of genes, each of which is made up of a string of DNA consisting of G, C, T and A. These genes carry a complete set of blueprints to build a life form and contain instructions for everything from eye colour to propensity to acquire certain diseases. Romesburg and his team have created synthetic DNA. They have done this by manipulating to DNA so that it no longer is made up of four chemical bases G, C, T

TALKING POINTS Drama at students’ gangland film shoot

and A, but now has two additional chemical bases, X and Y. Their achievement has not just being in creating this synthetic DNA, but in actually getting it to stick and reproduce from generation to generation. Something not achieved before. They introduced the new chemical bases into a bacteria and have successfully seen the new synthetic DNA with the additional X and Y bases thrive and be passed on accurately through over 60 reproductions. At the moment this new DNA doesn’t have any biological function. It is just proof of concept. Whether scientists can harness the biological and chemical manufacturing machinery of the cells and tie it to the new DNA remains to be seen. If they can, then perhaps we have just witnessed the dawn of a new age of biotechnology with untold possibilities. • Feeling curious about the world around you? ARMED gardaí swooped on the scene after a student film shoot took a dramatic real-life twist last week. Students from Kerry’s Causeway Comprehensive secondary school were filming at a post office in Causeway for a transition-year project. However, a member of the public alerted gardaí to what they thought was an armed robbery taking place. Two armed garda units responded — before standing down when it became apparent that the only shooting was of the cinematic variety. The students had asked the owners of Hanley’s post office for permission to film there close to closing time. “Unfortunately, nobody thought to notify the gardaí, who promptly responded to the report by a vigilant member of the public — a woman passerby saw what she genuinely believed was a robbery taking place and called the gardaí,” noted the Irish Examiner. Up to 14 gardaí arrived at the scene, including two armed units, to deal with what was a potentially dangerous incident. Causeway Comprehensive vice principal, Anne Marie Hassett, said it was an oversight not to contact gardaí. Speaking on Radio Kerry Inspector Liam Wallace of Listowel Garda Station said the response of the gardaí was “commensurate with the report we received”. “You are talking about armed units from both Listowel and Tralee and uniformed gardaí from both Ardfert and Listowel,” Insp Wallace said on Radio Kerry.

CALL FOR SAFETY MEASURES FOR ALL AT DANGER JUNCTION

In the second of Killarney Advertiser’s series on the Killarney bypass road junction, Eve Kelliher reports on local road users’ concerns

Please provide safer access, say residents

FROM roundabouts to footbridges, local residents have plenty of suggestions as to what could be done to make the area safer for both the pedestrians and motorists who use it on a daily basis. Resident Pa McGillycuddy has for many years called for a roundabout as a solution to the crux. “The left-turn is ridiculous. One day I counted 75 cars in a line of traffic, all going westward,” he said. “I actually went back and counted them as there was such a big hold-up.” Pa has campaigned for a roundabout over the years and as part of this at one stage collected 95 signatures of people in favour of a roundabout as a solution. “I feel there is plenty of room for a roundabout, I really feel it would solve the problem,” said Pa. Other residents and pedestrians who use the area John Lyne and Enda Walshe also voiced serious concerns about the junctions. “As a resident and pedestrian I know there has been mention of a walkway adjacent to the rail track and I wonder also, what about creating a footbridge over the road?” said Enda. Bridgefield residents Breda and Amy Walsh Karen, Claudia and Tia Bruton, Emma and Noreen Kelly, Ciara “I think something similar to the arrangement at Dublin’s and Kate O'Sullivan crossing the Killarney By-Pass road. news special

‘Your heart would be in your mouth given the many accidents there’ OVER a thousand young people face the hazardous journey via the bypass to training at the grounds of two popular Killarney sports clubs every week. Representatives of both Killarney Legion GAA Club and Killarney Celtic FC have highlighted the dangers their members face when they try to access the club grounds. Killarney Legion GAA Club is home to up to 450 juveniles. “These boys and girls’ safety is of paramount importance to us,” club chairman Enda Walshe told Killarney Advertiser. “Realistically all those kids and their parents encounter the link road and junction up to three times a week during the year and many have to factor in delays – especially during the summer months – in getting access into our grounds. Your heart would be in your mouth given the many accidents up there. “As for the future I think a roundabout seems the most realistic and safe option.

Whatever measures are taken to make it safer we as a club would back 100%.” Up to 600 members of Killarney Celtic FC use the club’s facilities each week, noted its chairman Paul Sherry. “These members are aged from under-eight upwards,” he said. “People trying to access the grounds across the bypass has been a problem for years.” The speed of the traffic on the thoroughfare is a serious concern, he noted. “What is needed is the creation of safer access,” added Paul. “At the very least traffic-calming measures are needed here. The club would very much welcome action to be taken to create safer access to our club grounds. At 6pm it is almost impossible to access this area. “From the club’s perspective we would love to see something being done to make access more safe for families and children who use this route on a daily basis.”

Debby Looney is making the most of the longer evenings

ISN’T it great to have a stretch in the evenings? Almost as wonderful as seeing snowdrops in their white purity in the dark corners of the garden: “Lone Flower, hemmed in with snows and white as they But hardier far”…. Wordsworth describes the flowers better than I ever could. They are actually a flower native to Ireland, but in the wild they are scarce, so scarce in fact, that if you have seen them in the wild you are encouraged to submit that sighting to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. Once they are happy, they will naturalise, but they need to be in humus-rich soil, preferably in the shade, as they are woodland plants. Another uplifting sight is when Chaenomeles varieties come into flower. One of my favourites is “Pink Lady”, bright pink flower buds along the entire branches opening into large blossoms. They come in several colours, from white to pink, orange or red. They provide colour in a time when the garden is bare and the fruit, also known as false quince, remain on it throughout the winter.

While disinfecting the greenhouse/polytunnel, did you come across masses of unused terracotta pots? I find them lurking in the oddest places in my garden, and this year I will be rounding them all up and giving them a facelift. Terracotta pots can look well, but sometimes be a little…boring. They can be revitalised with a few coats of Cuprinol Fence paint, which comes in a huge range of colours. If you have small pots a tester pot should be plenty, and it’s a fun way to spend an afternoon with the kids. They can then use their pots to sow sweet peas or sunflowers! Some emails have come in about laurel hedges yellowing. The main reason for this in our area is lack of iron or waterlogging. If you have established that waterlogging is not the problem, you can feed your hedge now or in the coming month with a Sulphate of Iron product, which is also beneficial for camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons. Take care to always follow instructions on packaging, though; otherwise your leaves will be brown, not yellow!

Rolls-Royce builds final Phantom ROLLS-ROYCE has made its last Phantom, bringing an end to its 13-year reign. Created with a nautical theme for what the luxury carmaker describes as a “connoisseur collector” of the brand, the final model, a Phantom Extended Wheelbase, was designed to have an interior reminiscent of a 1930s-ocean liner. That explains why, in its opulent leather-lined

cabin, you’ll find clocks inspired by an old ship’s radio. Each bespoke timepiece is housed in a grooved bezel that features 24 time zones; passengers can rotate the outer dial to suit the time zone they’re in. Other seafaring themes include handcut lambswool carpets that mimic waves, and an exterior paint job inspired by the ocean.

Under the bonnet the Phantom comes with the standard car’s naturally-aspirated 339kW/720Nm 6.75-litre V12 that can haul the luxurious limousine to 100km/h in 6.1 seconds. It’s not known how much the unnamed RollsRoyce collector paid for the last-ever Phantom, but it’s thought its owner parted with around €1 million for the privilege.

The Grand Tour's Clarkson, Hammond and May have taken over the Hollywood Hills THE case of the giant travelling heads of the Grand Tour hosts continues - and this time they've taken over Hollywood. If you haven't been following, huge stone busts of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have been spotted travelling on the back of a truck all over the world. And yes, they're just as weird as you'd think. In the latest pictures, they have been suspended above the Hollywood sign, probably giving all the hikers and tourists a right fright. Amazon Prime has been keeping quiet as to why the giant heads have been given a round-the-world ticket. Maybe the three of them have had enough of filming a TV show with no studio and want to aim for the big screen instead. Who knows? It seems that not everyone is a fan of the travelling heads though. The Grand Tour's Twitter account revealed they'd had a bit of a telling off while in the States. The truck was stopped and the driver was asked to see his papers. He was then politely suggested that we move along...far along. Yikes.

PRECIOUS MOTHER OF JESUS Mother of Divine Grace, you can find a way, where there is no way. Please hear my prayer and grant me my request. (Say 6 times daily & your request will be granted). NAS

You always had a smile to share, A laugh, a joke, a time to care, Each of us in our own way, Have special thoughts of you today.

Remembered with love, Seán O’Shea, “Lyn Wood” Tralee Road Killarney, who died on the 11th February 2016

We cannot bring back the old days When we were all together, The family chain is broken now, But memories live forever.

In loving memory of Anne Marie O’Sullivan, late of Artigallivan, Headford, who died on the 5th February 1999. R.I.P. To hear your voice and see you smile, To laugh and joke with you a while, To sit and talk in the same old way, Would be my dearest wish today. Sadly missed and fondly remembered always by Eileen, Darren, Tracey, Johan, Annie and Edith.

On the first anniversary of Patrick’s passing, we his family, would like to express our sincere gratitude to our relations, neighbours and many friends and all who supported and sympathised with us on our sad loss. A sincere and heartfelt thanks to all who called to the house, attended the rosaries, removal, funeral mass, sent flowers, mass cards, enrolments and letters of sympathy. We are especially grateful to the following: Dr. Donal Kavanagh, Sheehan’s Pharmacy, the Killarney Palliative Care nurses and Aiden Carmody of the HSE and his team for all their help and kindness. A special thanks to Fr. Donal O’Connor and Fr. Fergal Ryan who visited Patrick frequently at home, Fr. Jim Lenihan, Fr. Tom Looney, and all the clergy, especially those who travelled from Rockwell College to celebrate Patrick’s requiem mass in the Cathedral. Thank you all for the beautiful funeral service. To the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee and the Dr Crokes Club for providing guards of honour. To our own team in The Beaufort Bar, friends and neighbours who helped out with food and refreshments we will always be thankful. To O’Shea’s Funeral Directors for their guidance, advice and professionalism in preparing Patrick and taking him to his final resting place in Aghadoe. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our appreciation. The holy sacrifice of the mass will be offered for your intentions. Mass for Patrick will take place on Saturday the 4th of February at 7.30 in Fossa Church. Those we love don’t go away they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, still missed and held so dear.

AIB award for Dr Crokes star Daithi Casey

KILLARNEY’S Daithi Casey was honoured in Croke Park for his performance with his club Dr Crokes. A total of 11 camogie, football and hurling stars received accolades at the annual AIB Provincial Club Player Awards. AIB, sponsor of both the GAA and Camogie Club Championships invited the players, their friends, family, GAA and Camogie representatives to celebrate their achievements at the lunch which was hosted by GAA broadcasting legend Des Cahill. Voted for by national and regional sports media, the winning players were selected based on their overall performance throughout the 2016 provincial club season. Casey’s penalty against KilmurryIbrickane in the Munster quarterfinal was key. To follow that up in the Munster final with a hat-trick to sink

The Nire showed his class — breaking the Waterford side early and sending his Kerry team through to the AIB GAA Club Championship semis. “It’s a nice feeling to win the Munster Provincial Club Player of the Year for 2016, it’s probably the first time I’ve ever received something like this so the recognition is great,” said Casey at the AIB Provincial Club Player Awards presentation in Croke Park. “It’s all down to the team though because I’m just a forward who has to be in the right place at the right time. I’m really looking forward to the All-Ireland Semi-Final now because we’ve been training well, and we’ve waited three years for another shot at this.”

Killarney Celtic thanks Order of Malta KILLARNEY CELTIC FC has paid tribute to the dedicated members of the Order of Malta who swiftly took action when a player was badly injured in a recent game. FORMER KERRY GAA star and former minister Jimmy Deenihan has taken up the position of chairperson of the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership. Jimmy Deenihan said he was honoured to be taking up the role: “I am passionate about sport and recreation and all of the enormous benefits they bring for participants and the wider community. Very shortly we will be publishing a new sports and recreation strategy for the county and I look forward to working with the stakeholders in promoting our programme of work in the years ahead.” Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership comprises representatives from a range of organisations and agencies in Kerry, all working towards increasing participation rates in sport and physical activity, whilst developing and delivering sport and physical activity at a local level. The Partnership includes representatives of An Garda Síochána, Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, HSE, ITT, Kerry County Childcare Committee, Kerry County Council, KDYS, Kerry Education and Training Board, the Primary Principal Schools Network, Public Participation Network, South Kerry Development Partnership, and representatives from the business and leisure sectors. A number of successful programmes associated with the Partnership include Go For Life (for older people), Kerry’s Safer Cycling Programme (primary school children), ‘parkruns’, and Swim for All (for people with disabilities). “Kerry County Council is proud to play a key role in the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership and I want to acknowledge the valuable work the Partnership is doing in promoting sport, recreation and physical activity in the county through the support of Sport Ireland. Can Celtic defy the odds once again to make the last eight? Following their heroics in the last round, Celtic are hoping to repeat the feat, writes Adam Moynihan FAI Junior Cup (Last 16) Ballynanty Rovers v Killarney Celtic Shelbourne Park (Limerick) Sunday, February 5, at 2pm Killarney Celtic have already exceeded expectations in this year’s FAI Junior Cup by shocking Mervue United and Newmarket Celtic. Now it’s time to see if they can go one better and reach the quarterfinals of Irish soccer’s showpiece competition. It’ll take something exceptional to top their incredible last 32 victory over Newmarket, that’s for sure. That memorable 3-2 win will go down as one of the greatest in the history of the club and players and manage-

ment deserve a lot of credit for making it this far. Celtic are on a great run of form and they followed up on that triumph in Clare with another road win last weekend, this time against Ringmahon of Cork in the Munster Junior Cup. Confidence will be sky high within the camp but they’ll also be well aware that in Ballynanty Rovers they’re coming up against a truly formidable opponent. Balla (as they’re affectionately known) currently find themselves third in the ultra-competitive Limerick league with 27 points from 14 games and at 6/1 the current Lawson Cup holders are third favourites to

Rugby news & views THE weekend before the start of the RBS Six Nations is always a funny weekend. With no Pro 12 or European rugby, the focus starts to switch to the forthcoming championship. However, Munster hit the headlines earlier this week when they made waves on the transfer market, signing Chris Farrell from Racing 92 and James Hart from Grenoble on two-year deals. But the big news was the signing of Currow native JJ. Hanrahan from Northampton. This is fantastic news for Munster and for the Kerry man, who departed Munster a few years ago as he wasn’t getting enough gametime under Anthony Foley. The move irked some, while it was clear that Foley preferred Ian Keatley – who is rumoured to be heading to France in the summer. It’s great to see Hanrahan coming home and no doubt he will challenge Tyler

win the FAI Junior Cup outright. En route to the last 16 they’ve defeated Limerick sides Newport Town (A) 2-1, Croom United (A) 3-0, Bruff United (H) 15-0 and Mungret Regional (H) 8-1, before beating Wexford’s Courtown Hibs (A) 1-0 in the 5th round and then Rush Athletic of Dublin (A) 1-0 in the last 32. The team from the north side of Limerick City certainly have pedigree in this competition: they made it all the way to the final in 2014 but were unable to get the better of St Michael’s (Tipperary) on the day. The Hoops will travel to Limerick on Sunday without the services of striker Cathal O’Shea who will serve a suspension for the red card he picked up

Bleyendaal for the number 10 jersey under Rassie. Welcome home, JJ! The lull in matches brings out some interesting news stories from across the country and one to raise its head once again is the naming rights around Thomond Park. Munster CEO Garrett Fitzgerald has said that Munster have approached 10 companies with a view to selling the naming rights to Thomond Park. This has generated much debate on social media, with fans voicing support and disapproval in equal measure. Munster are looking at building their squad and the improvement in recent performances has ignited the expectations surrounding this team. Also, the remaining debt around the development of Thomond Park needs to be cleared.

against Newmarket, while regular left back Brendan Falvey is a doubt having broken a bone in his hand in the same game. For the third round in a row, Celtic go into a huge FAI Junior Cup game as underdogs. The bookies have them at 11/4 (which, interestingly, is a shorter price than they were against Newmarket in the previous round) so the travelling support know it’ll take another massive team effort if the men from Killarney are to claim another historic scalp. Ballynanty are a very strong outfit and home advantage may be enough to see them through but Celtic have already defied the odds this season. With the right attitude, and a little bit of luck, there’s no reason they can’t do it again.

tRiViA

This debate will rage on and I’m sure regardless of which company wins, in the end Thomond Park will always remain Thomond Park. The Six Nations kicks off this weekend with Ireland travelling to Murrayfield to take on Scotland. There will be very high expectations on the Irish shoulders following the beating of the All Blacks last November. However, an amazing championship is guaranteed. Don’t forget that Killarney RFC are holding a fundraising raffle for Six Nations tickets with the first prize being two tickets to Ireland V England and second prize being Ireland V France, both at the Aviva in Dublin. Contact any coach, senior player or committee member if you would like to purchase a ticket.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, AIDAN Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the remarkable career of teak-tough defender Aidan O’Mahony

AIDAN O’MAHONY announced his retirement recently from intercounty football. Páidí Ó Sé first gave him his Kerry geansaí in 2003 and he has been a regular on the Kerry team since then. Over his long service with Kerry, O’Mahony won five All-Irelands, three National Leagues and two All Stars in a remarkable career that saw him play in all six defensive positions, a point made by current Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice who also said: “Honesty underpins everything he did and his selflessness manifested itself in the way he was happy to encourage and advise everyone. He was a warrior for Kerry.” He loved the challenge of training. He trained hard and played hard; often on the edge such was his commitment to the cause of the geansaí he wore on his back, be it Kerry or Rathmore. Jack O’Connor, his former Kerry boss, said of the Rathmore man: “Aidan O’Mahony was teak tough and the tougher it got the better he liked it. It

was fairly obvious to us at this time (2004) that we needed to go in a new direction. Kerry had been bullied by the likes of Tyrone, Armagh and Meath three years in a row and we needed a harder edge if we were to compete at the top

with great physicality, but he rarely picked up a black card for any indiscretion. He often went down injured and it appeared to spectators that he would not take any further part in the game, but after running repairs were conducted he picked himself up and Phoenix-like returned to the fray more determined than ever. This inspired his playing colleagues and never more so than with Rathmore. He was a colossus in that team. He was often knocked down, but invariably returned to play the proverbial blinder. He was really an inspiration and we saw that at first hand for Rathmore this past season. They had a great year and they can thank Aidan O’Mahony in particular. He was the standout player in the retention of the O’Donoghue Cup. He gave his all to his club and to his county. No half measures by Aidan. He was rock solid and you could depend on him especially when the going got tough and the intensity grew.

“He often went down injured and it appeared to spectators that he would not take any further part in the game, but after running repairs were conducted he picked himself up and Phoenix-like returned to the fray more determined than ever” table.” Aidan O’Mahony gave that edge along with Paul Galvin and this led to All-Ireland wins in 2004, 2006,2007, 2009 and in 2014. Aidan won the coveted medals in those years and added two All Stars in 2006 and in 2007. The introduction of the black card cramped his style as he defended

He continues to do so well in the RTÉ’S Dancing with the Stars. He is on to the next round avoiding elimination in the race for the title. Just like he did on the football field he is giving it his all and he has so much to offer. O’Mahony will be missed and along with Marc O Se two very decorated and versatile backs will not be available for Kerry in 2017. Thanks for the memories, Aidan, and no doubt you will continue to prosper with Rathmore and defy the ageing process. Announcing his retirement, he said: “I feel the time is now appropriate for me to step away from the Kerry team. It’s been an absolute honour for me to wear the green and gold jersey for Kerry for the past 14 years at senior level and I leave having great respect for all the talented players I have shared my footballing career with. I am extremely grateful for all the support my teammates gave me down through the years and I have made friendships for life. “I have been incredibly fortunate to represent my club (Rathmore), county, province and country over the years. It was an honour to share the dressing room with such brilliant players throughout the last 14 years with Kerry. I have utmost respect for every player whom I have played against as we all put on our county colours with a common goal in mind.” That sums up the teak tough defender. He will be missed. KERRY V DONEGAL Kerry make the long trip to Donegal on Sunday next for their opening game in the Allianz National Football League. It is always very hard to win a league game away from home, but Kerry have prepared well and will have to go without players still involved in the All Ireland club series. Donegal are not going well so Kerry can get off to a winning start.

Smalltalk

Killarney Rugby youngster Mike Sheahan talks to Adam Moynihan about the season so far, lining out with Ultan Dillane and a very random karaoke number

A: How’s the season going so far? M: The season’s going well. We fell short in our first two games but we’ve won every game since. Eight on the trot. A: What are your goals for 2017? M: My goals are to do well in college for the rest of the year and sport-wise I really hope we get promoted through the play-offs and win the two cups we’re still in. A: Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? M: Tough question. I'm going to have to say Kareem "Rami" Quasim just because of his terrible taste in music. A: Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? M: I don't think anyone is "good" at Tinder on our team but I reckon TJ Brosnan gave it a bit of time. A: Who’s the biggest moaner at the club? M: The brother, Paudie, but he means well. Or captain Ger when he's watching from the sideline and the ref makes a howler of a call against us. I'd prefer the word ‘arguer’ instead of ‘moaner’. A: Who spends the most time in the gym? M: Colin Mac for sure. Spends more time in the gym than training with the team some would say. A: Who’s the worst dressed? M: Has to be Cha Healy. A: Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? M: I actually togged out with Ultan Dillane a few times underage although that was playing for Tralee not Killarney. I’m not a traitor we just couldn't field an U-18 team at the time! A: How good was he? M: He was exceptional. A massive man and he was shredded. It was good to be playing with him and not against him. A: Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? M: Currently Brian Lynch is one of the best athletes on our team. And I remember U-14 I played with a fella called Christian. He was leaps and bounds over us all with speed and strength.

A: Do you play any other sports? M: Just rugby at the moment. I do a bit of powerlifting with the college as well. A: Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? M: I've watched NFL for years now. I'd have loved to have given it a try but hey, I got rugby so I can’t complain. A: What’s the greatest moment in the history of sport? M: In a rugby sense it’d be when Ireland thrashed England 43-13 in 2007. A: Do you have any nicknames? M: Surprisingly I don't. King Flopper was used a few years back. A: Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? M: I think I'd survive without my phone but if I had to choose one… Snapchat. A: What’s your most used emoji?

A: What’s the best show on TV? M: Peaky Blinders. Quality show. A: What song would you sing at karaoke? M: Akon - Smack That. A: Interesting choice. Do you fancy yourself as a rapper? M: [laughs] It’d get the crowd going! A: Who have you been listening to recently? M: Catfish and the Bottlemen. Favourite band. A: Who’s the most famous person in your phone? M: The old lad, Paudie. He was a hell of a baller back in the day I've heard. A: What would you have for your last meal? M: Steak with peppercorn sauce and creamy mash. Can't beat it.

A: What’s your proudest sporting moment? M: Captaining the Crokes minors to the East Kerry Championship a few years back. Who knows, it might come this year or next year too with the great rugby team we’ve assembled.

A: Where’s the best pint in town? M: Jimmy Brien’s.

A: And the most embarrassing? M: I genuinely don't get embarrassed when playing sport, there’s no need for it. After all it’s just for fun.

A: And last question: can you tell me a joke? M: Killarney Legion.

A: If you had to compare yourself to a professional rugby player, who would it be? M: Keith Earls. A fiery player all game long.

64

A: If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? M: Jonah Lomu, George Best and Jimmy Bullard.

Killarney Advertiser 03.02.17

A: Who would play you in a movie about your life? M: A young Mark Wahlberg.

A: Ouch. Cheers Mike! M: Best of luck, Adam. It was great talking to you.

U-14 BOYS DIV. 2 Gneeveguilla 43-39 Caherciveen.(Played 29/01/2017) This was a great game of basketball with Gneeveguilla having home advantage. It took both teams a while to settle in attack .At the end of the 1st quarter it was 6-7 in favour of Caherciveen and at the end of 2nd quarter the score was 1911 in favour of the visitors. However in the third quarter the tide changed for the home side as they were ahead by 2 points on a scoreline of 28-26. Things got hot again in the final quarter as the teams were even on a scoreline of 37 a piece with 3 minutes to go and both defences giving away nothing. However the home side edged ahead on a final score of 43-39. Paraic Finnegan, Paudie O’ Leary, Ciaran Cremin and Mark O’Leary got vital scores for Gneeveguilla when it was needed. Ronan Teahan and Cathal O’Shea were very accurate for Caherciveen. We look forward to our next outing. U12 GIRLS DIV 3 Gneeveguilla 16-36 Tralee Imperials. (Played 28/01/2017 ) Gneeveguilla put in a great effort but came up short against a much improved and stronger Imperial team from their first game earlier in the season. The first half ended 9-18 to Tralee. Gneeveguilla kept fighting until the end but found it hard to compete with the hight and strength of the opposition. Imperials won out on a scoreline 16-36. Top scorer for Gneeveguilla was Ella Guerin(9) and for Tralee Imperials was Keelin O Brien (15)

Mastergeeha FC

U13 Castleisland 2 Mastergeeha 4. The boys had a good win away on Saturday afternoon. Colin O’Leary and Mark O’Shea got two goals each with Daniel Horgan excellent on the day. U15 DIV 1 Mastergeeha 0 Ballyhar 6. The lad’s tough season continued as they were beaten by promotion chasing Ballyhar. They trailed by 4 at the break but follow-

ing a few half time changes they were much better in the 2nd half competing well and pressing forward when they could. They did have chances with Shane Warren and Philip O’Leary both going close but Ballyhar defended well and were more clinical up front on the day. U17 Mastergeeha 4 Killarney Athletic 2. In this close local derby the boys trailed early on despite creating the better chances. Just before the break James Lynch scored the equaliser. In the second half Killarney athletic started the better and took the lead again. After this Mastergeeha pushed forward with James Lynch scoring again in the 60th minute. Five minute later Mastergeeha took the lead with James Lynch completing his hatrick. In the closing stages Anthony Darmody scored to ensure the points and a good win. U16 GIRLS Mastergeeha 1 Listowel 7 The girls faced a strong Listowel side on Saturday. Kate Lynch scored the Mastergeeha goal with good performances from Caolinn O’Donoghue and Ailbhe Brosnan. PREMIER B Mastergeeha 2 Skelliga 1. In this tough encounter the seniors had to work hard to take all three points. Mastergeeha opening the scoring mid-way through the first half when Jer Sheehan scored with a good free kick. However the visitors equalised shortly after to leave the score1-1 at the break. In the second half both sides created some chances and Mastergeeha took the lead when Chris Egan finished well following a pass from Damien Breen. After this Mastergeeha defended well and the deserved three points. MASTERGEEHA FC LOTTO There was no winner on Friday 27th January, 2017. Jackpot now €5,100.

Killarney RFC Notes INIS M Last weekend, the minis were due to travel to Ballymalis to take part in the West Munster Blitz, hosted by Killorglin RFC. However, due to the inclement weather during the week, the blitz was postponed and training continued instead at Knockreer. The blitz will take place in February and the kids are looking forward to showing off their skills in this blitz and they are also due to travel to Tralee RFC, so February promises to be a busy one for the minis. Training continues this Saturday at knockreer between 10:30am and 12 midday. For any details please contact Minis Coordinator Liam Murphy on 087-4145662. U14’S Our U14’s travelled to Abbeyfeale last Sunday to take on the West Limerick side in the West Munster League. Looking to consolidate their place on top of the league, the lads were looking to continue their winning streak and duly obliged by winning on a scoreline of 15 points to 3. The visitors tries were scored by Peter Walsh, Bailey O’Sullivan and Padraic Talbot who secured the 9th win out of 9 matches for the lads. This is absolutely outstanding and the lads hope to continue the run as they head to Castleisland next Saturday. Best of luck to the lads, they are playing spellbinding rugby and have an army of supporters following them. Well done to coaches Seamus, Eoin and John for all their hard work. U18’S Our U18’s were due to take on Castleisland/Abbeyfeale in the replay of the voided match from a few weeks previous, last Saturday at Aghadoe. However, as the home side were warming up and the Castleisland contingent arrived, it became clear that the Abbeyfeale side were not coming. The game was called off and Killarney received the points in what was a disappointing turn of events, with everyone looking forward to a good game of rugby. The lads travel to Highfield next weekend in the Bowl. Best of luck to the lads in the next round of the U18 Bowl competition. SENIORS Last Sunday, our seniors looked to con-

Abédi Pelé (Marseille - 1993), Samuel Kuffour (Bayern Munich - 2001), Sulley Muntari (Inter Milan - 2010) and Michael Essien (Chelsea - 2012).

tinue their excellent run of late as they hosted Fethard and District at Aghadoe. Conditions were good for the match and the visitors were without a doubt the stronger side on the day as they ran out winners on a scoreline of 20 - 0. Alan Mulligan, Paul O’Sullivan and Damian O’Carroll scored for the home side, while the on form Paudie Sheahan converted and added a penalty. Well done to the lads who move to 3rd in the league. Next Sunday, the lads host neighbours Killorglin at Aghadoe and will look to take on the table toppers in what will be a tough match. A fantastic match is guaranteed, so why not come along to Aghadoe for the 2:30pm kick off next Sunday and support the lads. 6 NATIONS RAFFLE Killarney RFC are holding a fundraising raffle with two amazing prizes at stake. Killarney Swimming Club Notes

Congratulations to our swimmers who took part in the Gerry Ryan Invitational Gala in the University of Limerick. The event took place over two days, the 21st and 22nd of January, with nearly 1,000 young swimmers taking part each day. As this was an “invitation only” gala, with only the best swimmers from all over Ireland taking part, competition was stiff and with scouts from the Munster Development Squad and Swim Ireland silently pacing the poolside, keeping a close eye on the participants, the pressure was on. As always, Killarney swimmers were in fine form and took to the Olympic-size pool as if it was their natural home. UNDER 9 GIRLS Well done to Faye O’Neill who was simply superb in the pool and won a treasured gold medal in the 50 metres backstroke and followed that with a silver medal in the 100 metres freestyle. Certainly, a name for the future. UNDER 10 GIRLS Jocelyn Hickey was another lady in fine

form in Limerick taking bronze in the 50 metres backstroke in the face of some very stiff competition in a difficult age group. Under 12 Girls – Pia Hickey is always worth a bit of jewelery at galas and she sure didn’t let us down in Limerick winning a beautiful silver medal in the 50 metres backstroke to add to her collection. OVER 18 BOYS Without doubt the hardest category in Limerick with some of these young men silently harbouring hopes and dreams of Tokyo in 2020, our very own Robert O’Brien gave them all a sharp dose of reality by winning a silver medal in the incredibly difficult 400 metres Individual Medley and then took it a step further with a second silver in the 200 metres backstroke. Well done, Robert. A marvellous achievement, fully deserved, and while these medals might have caused a shock amongst some of the big clubs, they came as no surprise to anyone from Killarney. Thanks to our coaches, Cathal O’Brien and Leontia Doody and assistant coach Shane Kerins for all their help and patience over the two days. Thanks also to all parents for travelling, dragging and transporting both children and supplies up and down to Limerick on both days.

A credit to the team and their coaches Eilish Finnegan and John Hurley for getting the boys this far. Killarney Golf & Fishing Club

“BEST PARKLAND COURSE” IN MUNSTER 2016. The Golfer’s Guide to Ireland, which is the most prestigious publication on Golf in Ireland has awarded the accolade for the “Best Parkland Course in Munster” for the Killeen Course, for 2016, to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, this is a wonderful achievement, and a just reward to all of those concerned. Special mention must go to our Course Manager, Enda Murphy and his dedicated team, and to the Course representative from the Club Council, Sean Coyne who has just recently been replaced in that position by former Club Captain Mikey Daly, and who had been assisting Sean in that role for some years. Congratulations all round are most deserved, and are all the more satisfying when the damage that was wreaked on our courses by last winter’s storms is taken into consideration. The tremendous effort put in by our Club Members, and our friends from Dooks Golf Club after the storms of last year must and helped out with the devoting evenings during the year, will have gone a long way to help out in bringing our courses back into good shape, and therefore we all played our part in helping to win this fantastic award. The most recent accolade that Killarney Golf and Fishing Club had been awarded, was in 2011, after the Club had hosted the Irish Open that year, and was for “Best Parkland Course in Ireland”. With a view to the continuation of Course improvements, the programme for same for 2017 has just been announced, improvements to the 1st 3rd 4th 7th and 10th on Killeen, are either ongoing, or in the pipeline, these improvements will not only enhance the visual aspect of all of these golf holes but will also help to speed up the rate of play, as time spent searching for golf balls in various ponds and streams will be substantially reduced as they are all going to cleaned out, and any Golf balls landing therein will be visible, and thus should be fairly easily retrievable. SYMPATHY Club Captain, Declan McCarthy, on behalf of the entire Club wishes to pass on our condolences to Club Member, Liam Maguire on the recent death of his father Terry. FIXTURES The wet weather conditions over the past week or so, resulted in the scheduled competition for Sunday last, the 29th of January being cancelled, this was the first weekend that the Men’s Club were unable to hold a competition this winter, which is complete contrast to last winter when our courses were closed for such a long time. Next Sunday will see the commencement of the “Double Shotgun” starts, with tee-times scheduled for 8.30 A.M. and 12.30 P.M. On Mahony’s Point.

Killarney Celtic FC

POKER CLASSIC Killarney Celtic are holding a Poker Classic in Scott’s Hotel on February 3rd at 8.30pm. Entry is €30 and re-buy in is €20. It’s a Dealer-Dealt Tournament of Texas Hold’em and a fun night is guaranteed. Call Brian on 087 6593008 or Derry on 087 9339178 for enquiries. ORDER OF MALTA Some-one unfortunately picked up a serious injury at a Celtic game recently. It was a serious knock to a very talented young player and we wish him a speedy recovery - it would have been a lot more serious if it wasn’t for these people and the instant and wonderful expert medical assistance they provided - a huge thank you to Joanne Kennedy McGurrion, Suzanne Scully, and Fiona McMahon, and everybody at the Order of Malta - your help and support is rarely appreciated enough until moments like this. Team physio Stefan McMahon also provided great medical care and assistance, and the injured player, thankfully now making a good recovery, was at the replay to thank everyone for their assistance. HOSPITALITY A big thank you also to Chloe Mai Duggan and Carmel Looney for their unending and trojan work on Saturday, a 12 hour day spent in the club. RESULTS Munster Junior Cup: Killarney Celtic 3 Ringmahon 0 Killarney Celtic advanced to the last 16 in front of a huge home following (and thank you all, your support was invaluable) with a 3-0 victory over Ringmahon. In the 20th minute Cathal O’Shea latched onto a Stephen Hayes cross, spun and neatly drilled home, giving the keeper no chance. 1-0 at the break to Celtic. It was a high quality game with real skill and craft on both sides (Ringmahon did themselves proud too) but Celtic were just that fraction sharper with the first touch and quicker to find each other and in the 56th minute Pa McGrath was quickest to react to a loose ball in a crowded goalmouth and blasted home. With quarter of an hour left, a beautifully weighted Stephen Hayes free kick targeted Stephen McCarthy and his bullet header was inch perfect. 3-0. The game was played in a superb atmosphere all through and both teams were a credit to their communities and to the Association. Denny Premier B: Ballymac Galaxy 2 Killarney Celtic B 3 It was 0-0 after 75 minutes when Ballymac scored through a great free-kick. Celtic responded by bringing in Vlad Sirotiak and Martin and the both fired home quickly to put us 2-1 up. Ballymac

levelled but Daniel O’Donoghue smashed home a great shot to give us the three points. U15 National Cup: Killarney Celtic 1 Ferrybank 1 Ferrybank won 5-4 on penalties aet.The cruelest way to lose a game, and after a real thriller. Two brilliant sides were very well matched all through. Emmet Finnan scored for us and Celtic played really well (Daniel Okwute was outstanding) but in fairness, so did Ferrybank. 1-1 after normal time and it remained so after extra-time, although both sides were left ruing good chances, and the penalty lottery went their way. Best of luck to a very sporting side in the rest of the competition. U15 Div Two: Killarney Celtic B 2 Fenit Samphires 1 Cian Doe and Dylan Clifford scored cracking goals, while Harry Buckley and Cathal Higgins were superb on a day when everyone played well. U13 Div One: Killarney Celtic 4 Iveragh 2 Killarney Celtic were declared the Division One Champions after defeating a skillful and tenacious Iveragh side. Celtic struck with two early goals created with great wing play by Ceryson Danter and finished off by Senan O’Leary and Pedro Alonso. Iveragh pressed hard to get back into the game but another great corner by John Kelliher saw a well headed goal by Pedro Alonso. A great counter-attacking move saw Peadar Kelliher speeding through the last line of defence to coolly slot home. Iveragh never gave up and forced keeper Jack O’Donoghue to make a fantastic save. Celtic were just that bit too strong for them on the day and won the title with two games to spare. Best for Celtic were Jack O’Donoghue, John Kelliher, Calum O’Donoghue, Pedro Alonso, and Peadar Kelliher. U12 Premier Killarney Celtic 0 Carndonough 0 Carndonough win 3-1 on penalties aet. Killarney Celtic 12’s went out of the National Cup on penalties after a cracking game versus Carndonough from Donegal. The game ended 0-0 with both keepers excelling. Killarney Celtic scored their first penalty but missed their next three as Carndonough hit their first three to progress. U12 Girls Premier: Camp Juniors 2 Killarney Celtic 2 Killarney Celtic led twice thanks to goals from Aideen O’Brien and Fiona Buckley but full credit to Camp Juniors, who have also pulled in maximum effort from a small population and have put in a lot of work to come an awful long way, they fully deserved to get a draw in a thrilling game. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to U15 player Harry Buckley on making the Kerry Schoolboys/ Schoolgirls Team of the Week. FIXTURES FAI Junior Cup: Killarney Celtic away to Ballynanty (Limerick), Sunday, 2.00pm A crunch game against a quality side – support will be vital! ÓÍCHE CEILIÚRADH The Ladies club held their Juvenile Awards Night in the Dromhall Hotel on Sunday and had many reasons to celebrate a hugely successful year. Ladies Chairman Dave Randles thanked all those in attendance for supporting the girls during the year and extended an open invitation to any and all that would like to get involved in any aspect of the club. The celebration centred on the medal presentations to our 3 teams. The U12 girls made great strides during the year thanks to the great work and time put in by coaches Selina Looney and Hannah Devlin. They reached the East Kerry Shield Final but found Milltown /Listry that little bit better but this does not diminish the great progress they’ve made this past year. The U14 girls had a busy year. They competed in Feile to great effect and again reached an East Kerry Final. Displaying great skill and courage they emerged victorious, again special thanks to Shaun O Connor,Mike Doody,Maria Hanrahan and Orla Culloty who kept the girls on the go in what

was a lively year. The U16s saved their best ‘til last when defeating Spa in the East Kerry Division 2 in Spa. They showed great resilience to come back from a slow start and win with a bit to spare in the end. A busy year for these girls with some U14s lining out for them and some of the girls graduating to the Senior team during the year. John Doona and Susanne Smith found plenty time to coach both the U16 and Senior girls during the year and must have great satisfaction from the year. Individual Awards..U12 girls Lorna Looney,U14 girls Tara Murphy,U16 girls Ellen Coffey. The contribution of trojan worker Desiree Crowley was also acknowledged as was the appointment of John Doona as Kerry U14 ladies team manager - both thoroughly deserved. A very enjoyable event which showed the ladies in the best possible light and highlighted what is without doubt one of the most vibrant parts of the club. OÍCHE CEILIÚRADH EILE! A date for the diary - Friday February 17th.in the beautiful Killarney Plaza Hotel, our Spring Party will be held. As previously mentioned this was a tremendous nights entertainment last year and hopes are high that this years version will be even better. Tickets from usual club sources. AN EASIER LIFE No more running around as you can now pay your membership(which is due for 2017)online and to add to convenience our lotto is also available through the same medium. SCÓR NA BPÁISTÍ Anyone who would like to take part in this years Scór na bPáistí should contact Scór officer Carolann Spellman or any club officer. Tráth na gCeist,Amhránaiocht Aonaoir, agus Damhsa Sean Nós are among the disciplines involved. Quiz,Solo singing and sean nós dancing are part of the competition. BEST WISHES The very best of luck to Kerry and Rathmore star Aidan O'Mahoney who announced his retirement from intercounty football. Much admired he was more than generous and obliging at a function run by the Legion some time ago. The problem now is that with extra time for his club the much sought after O Donoghue Cup will be that bit more difficult for the rest of us in East Kerry. A hard act to follow in the Kerry jersey. SYMPATHY The Killarney Legion Club extends its sincerest sympathy to Breda Murphy and the Costello family on the recent death of her mother Josehine R.I.P.Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a h-Anam Dílis.
