CONCERN AT REPORTED SALE OF LICENCES TO SHOOT DEER IN KILLARNEY

‘An attack on our heritage’ THE National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS) is investigating reports that a US hunter bought a permit to shoot red deer. Recent reports allege that €5,000 was paid by an American hunter to a commercial company for the experience of shooting a Killarney red deer stag. NPWS officials have been in touch with the Wild Deer Association, which has made the allegations, and intend to meet with a representative from the Wild Deer Association to discuss the matter and gather more information, if possible. “It should be noted that permits are granted to a specific landowner, cannot be sold and are non transferable,” said Micheál Ó Conaire on behalf of the NPWS. “There is an annual open season during which deer can be legally shot under licence. The open season generally operates from September 1 to February 28 depending on the species and gender of deer. Hunters need to have permission from the landowner and/or the sporting rights holder where they hunt.” Fine Gael Kerry Senator and Seanad Leas Cathaoirleach, Paul Coghlan, has described the alleged recent shooting of a Killarney red deer stag in the vicinity of Killarney National Park as a very serious matter. “These deer are an internationally protected species. Only as recently as the 1970s, there were just 60 in existence in Ireland, but thankfully they now number over 600,” said Senator Coghlan. Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Martin Ferris has asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys, to fully investigate such incidents. “Killarney Red Deer are part of our rich heritage and are an iconic symbol in Kerry, they should not be sold to the highest bidder to be shot for sport,” he said.

Homeless shelter to open in Killarney A HOMELESS shelter is to open in Killarney in 2018. The new shelter will be the first one in the town and will be developed by Cluid, with the support of Kerry County Council and the Department of the Environment. It is reported that the homeless shelter will be located in the former Armagh House on Park Road. The building is owned by the local authority and has been vacant for a decade. The plan is demolish this property and provide a purpose-built facility for homeless people. The project is currently at design stage. Welcoming the project, Cllr Donal Grady who has campaigned for such a facility, said: “We can’t turn a blind eye to the homeless.”

EDITOR'S VIEW

Movie magic as The Dawn breaks in Cinema Killarney TALK that Killarney could become the answer to Tinseltown echoes back and forth across the decades – in recent years, the town produced its own homegrown Hollywood hero in the shape of Michael Fassbender, but going back even further, Killarney filmmaker Tom Cooper made an iconic movie in the 1930s. Now the classic film written and directed by Mr Cooper in his hometown in 1936 is newly restored and ready for screening this evening, December 9, in Cinema Killarney. This film was the inspiration for “The Dawn workshops”, a successful series of masterclasses by top international and award-winning filmmakers which are now run on a regular basis for film and television practitioners by the National Digital Skills Centre at Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB) centre in Tralee. Diarmuid Galvin, a great-grandson of Tom Cooper, is a co-creator with Brian Nolan of “The Dawn workshops”.

The Dawn was the first talkie made in Ireland. Mr Cooper used Killarney talent, from technicians to local actors, family and friends, to shoot a story loosely based on the War of Independence and of course featuring the dazzling beauty of Killarney’s mountains and lakes. For some years now, the original film has been held in a specially controlled environment in the British Film Institute in order to preserve the delicate film substance from deterioration. Now in co-operation with the Cooper family, Brian Nolan and the digital skills production team at Kerry ETB Training Centre have digitised and restored this classic film to its former glory. The town is eagerly looking forward to enjoying the screening this evening, with the Cooper family this week sharing family lore including stories of Walt Disney visiting Kerry in the 1950s and meeting Tom Cooper. Killarney photographer Michelle Cooper Galvin recalls her grandfather with affection. “He was an innovator – his two big passions were films and tourism. I think he made the film to promote

Question I work full-time, Monday to Friday. What days off will I get at Christmas? Answer Christmas Day (25 December), St Stephen’s Day (26 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January) are public holidays every year. In 2016 Christmas Day falls on a Sunday and St Stephen's Day falls on a Monday. New Year's Day 2017 falls on a Sunday. Where a public holiday falls on a weekend, you do not have any automatic legal entitlement to have the next working day off work. This means that, for example, Tuesday 27 December 2016 is not a public holiday. Your employer can require you to attend work on that day. Your public holiday entitlement for Christmas Day will be one of the following: •A paid day off within a month of the public holiday •An additional day of annual leave •An additional day's pay Under the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997, you may ask your employer, at least 21 days before a public holiday, which of the alternatives will apply to you. Your employer should respond to you at least 14 days before the public holiday. In practice, many employers will give employees Tuesday 27 December and Monday 2 January off in lieu of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day – but it is important to remember that this is not an automatic entitlement. You can find out more about public holidays in the Explanatory Booklet on Holidays and Public Holidays (pdf) which is available from the Workplace Relations Commission website, workplacerelations.ie. If you do not get your public holiday entitlement, you may make a complaint under the Organisation of Working Time Act within 6 months of the dispute or complaint occurring. You must use the online complaint form available on workplacerelations.ie. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.

Killarney youngsters serenade Declan O’Rourke STUDENTS from Presentation Monastery and Holy Cross Mercy national schools in Killarney were treated to a special performance recently when none other than famous Irish singer songwriter Declan O’Rourke visited the Mon to hear them sing and also to perform for them. Earlier in the year, choirs from both schools combined to make a video recording of a song called "Children of 16", which was written by Declan in remembrance of the children who died during the Easter Rising. “Declan was very impressed with the video and promised to visit as soon as he was able,” said Presentation Monastery NS principal Colm O Súilleabháin. “True to his word, he did not disappoint and students and staff of both schools were delighted with their own private concert in the school hall recently. "We were thrilled to have him here in the school and it was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils, who got to perform a song for the person who actually wrote it! He was happy to answer questions from them and there was great interaction between the pupils and himself and he said he hoped to hear them singing again in the future."

YESTERDAY was the day when shoppers swung into action to cross off essential items on the festive list. December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, has become a traditional shopping day in Ireland. Gardaí in Kerry are warning shoppers to be vigilant of car park theft in retail car parks this month. Issuing the warning for “Retail Safety Day” yesterday, they report new figures which show 50 car park thefts taking place each month. The figures, compiled by the Garda Analysis Service to launch Retail Safety Day, show some €400,000 worth of goods was stolen from Irish shoppers’ cars last year. Incidents are most common on Tuesdays and Fridays between 12 noon and 6pm, with incidents rising in December. The average value taken per theft was €600, while the most commonly taken items are cash, electronics, tools and handbags. Launched to coincide with the start of the busy festive shopping period, Retail Safety Day urges members of the public to engage in safe shopping and parking in order to avoid becoming a victim of crime, whilst also improving their personal security. Sergeant Kelvin Courtney of the Garda Bureau of Community Engagement stated: “Customers should be wary while shopping. Always park in well-lit and secure areas. When you leave your car, lock all doors and windows and double check to make sure. Don’t leave property or cash on view, take it with you. Report all thefts and suspicious activities to staff or Gardaí.” Retail Safety Day also aims to raise awareness amongst retailers on ways to prevent business losses from criminal activity. Shoplifting adds 3% to the price of products. Local Garda clinics will be held throughout the country on December advising the public on their personal safety at this festive time. Meanwhile, An Garda Síochána produced safety information packs for both customers and retailers, both of which are available to download from the Garda website.

Joanne helps Gleneagle Group lead the way towards accessibility for all WORLD-RENOWNED accessibility advocate Joann O’Riordan is a regular visitor to Killarney and Joanne was delighted to do the honours as she launched a new wheelchair-accessible shuttle bus at The Gleneagle Hotel this week. Joanne officiated at the event held as The Gleneagle Group presented its accessibility programme to members of various accessibility groups at a special coffee morning held at The Brehon on Tuesday. As part of the programme, the group purchased the new wheelchairaccessible shuttle bus. The hotel group is currently rolling out a detailed accessibility programme which aims to make all the properties within the group accessible to everybody. “Our aim is to create a welcoming environment and inclusive experience for everyone. We are focused on making every step of the visitor journey, from the initial booking right through to departure, as seamless and hassle free as possible,” said Patrick O’Donoghue, managing director of The Gleneagle Group. “In order to do so, we must first identify and subsequently remove or overcome access barriers, and while we are carrying out official audits to identify the areas that need work, we also need to learn from those around us. We received some fantastic suggestions and feedback from everyone that attended our coffee morning and we are very grateful to those that took time out of their busy schedule to help us.” As part of The Gleneagle Group’s accessibility programme, the group purchased a new wheelchair accessible shuttle bus. The new Gleneagle bus, which has been on the road for the past month, was officially launched at the coffee morning by Joanne O’Riordan. Agnes sets wheels in motion to buy new wheelchair accessible bus for community A NEW bus will hit the road to the delight of wheelchair users in the greater Killarney area in the New Year. And it’s all thanks to the vision and dedication of a local woman. Agnes Casey Rooney decided to get in gear to take action when she discovered many members of the local community face difficulty in going about their daily lives because of the lack of wheelchair-accessible transport. Agnes embarked on a mission to raise funds for a bus for the Kerry Parents & Friends Association and last Friday it was a case of celebrations all round at the association’s headquarters at the Old Monastery, Port Road, as Agnes and her group of fundraisers unveiled the grand total of €51,830, and secured the purchase of a 171-registered Ford transit bus. “I have a sister, Mairead, who has intellectual difficulties, and who unfortunately lost most of her mobility a couple of years ago,” said Agnes. “She now has to have a wheelchair-accessible bus to go to work each day. I realised there was a need for funding when the bus arrived for Mairead one morning and the wheelchair access lift didn’t work. When I enquired about this, I was told that the fleet of 17 buses are deteriorating with no funding for replacement.” With the help of fellow locals, including former

The celebrations at the Old Monastery on Friday following the securing of the new wheelchair-friendly bus for Kerry Parents & Friends Association.

Kerry Parents & Friends CEO Tony Darmody, Conor Hennigan, Denis Casey, Gabhan O’Loughlin and Ger Counihan, Agnes swept into action to organise a series of fundraisers. The first event, a golf classic, took place in October and a major concert was staged in Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

Agnes and her team are not resting on their laurels. They aim to generate cash to set the wheels in motion to purchase a second bus also. “You can support a text campaign, donating €4 by texting ‘bus’ to 50300,” added Agnes. Contact Agnes Rooney on 087-9865258 for further details.

Opening an exciting new chapter on ‘outlaw territory’ THE highland country straddling counties Kerry, Cork and Limerick was once an ‘’asylum’’ for outlaws and a risen peasantry, according to the latest issue of the biennial Sliabh Luachra Journal. Many of the principal roads that run through the area today were not built until the 1820s and 1930s by the British authorities who wanted to gain more control of the territory. ‘’The wild hilly country on the borders of the three counties was outlaw territory,’’ writes Martin Murphy in an article on Whiteboys and Ribbonmen, relating the activities of secret societies against landlordism. This vast region of around 1,000 square miles did not have proper roads, a British Government report noted in 1822. Engineer Richard Griffiths was commissioned to design and improve roads and he also built stonearched bridges still in use today. Griffiths described Sliabh Luachra as an asylum for Whiteboys and robbers whose ‘’wickedness had frequently escaped punishment.’’ The 17th issue of the local history journal, published by Cumann Luachra, was launched by Fr Pat Moore, in Gneeveguilla. The story of the 1916 Easter Rising, in which volunteer Patrick O’Connor, from Rathmore, was killed, features prominently in the 120-page journal. Popular accordionist John Brosnan, who lives in Milleen, Kilcummin, tells of his life and times. There’s also an article on céilí bands in Sliabh Luachra by journal editor Donal Hickey. A trip to Killarney Fair as a boy with his father in the 1940s is recalled by John Kelly. He had a day off from school to drive in cattle they sold at the fair. “In those days, towns didn’t have fancy restaurants,

but they had “’ating houses” where hungry farmers and their sons could get good feeds of bacon and cabbage and plenty of plain, wholesome food,” notes editor Donal Hickey. Bohereencaol, in Killarney, had three such establishments, all of which did brisk business on fair and market days. The Kellys’ favourite was Mrs Twomey’s, a woman known for her generous portions. The journal is on sale for €12.

Applause as dancers raise €20,000 for Down Syndrome Kerry

A VIBRANT night out awaited the audience in the INEC last Friday night as the Kerry branch of Down Syndrome Kerry pulled out all the stops to stage its Strictly Come Dancing event. The event raised an impressive €20,000 for Down Syndrome Kerry (DSK) a voluntary organisation which provides support to 260 members and their families. “Our 24 dancers included six of our adult members with Down Syndrome – Amy Taaffe, Cathal Griffin, Conor Griffin, Jessica Power, Mary Claire McCarthy and Paul Scanlon. The remaining dancers were Aidan O’Mahony, Aidan O’Connor, Angie Smith, Brendan Fuller, Cathal Flaherty, Ciara Griffin, Claire Molloy, Danielle O’Sullivan, Dermot Moriarty, Eve O’Donoghue, Grainne Healy, Irene Kavanagh, Kevin Griffin, Mary Lawlor, Paudie Power, Sean Taaffe, Susanna Holden and Tom Lucey,” said Debbie Walsh of DSK. The judges for the night were Michael O Muircheartaigh, Toireasa Ferris, Elaine Canning (soprano and also vocal coach on the Voice of Ireland), and DJ Gavin O’Leary. The two finalists were voted by the audience. “The winning couple was to be selected by the judges but choosing a winning couple from the two proved impossible so our joint winners on the night were Cathal Griffin and Mary Claire McCarthy and Paudie and Jessica Power,” said Debbie. “We are overwhelmed with the response to this event and we want thank everyone for their continued support, it means so much to our members.” Irene Kavanagh and Paul Scanlon.

Seasonal sparkle, smiles and fun at The Brehon

Claire O’Halloran taking a photo of her children Eve and Cathal with Santa. PICTURES: VALERIE O’SULLIVAN

CHRISTMAS arrived early at The Brehon Hotel last Thursday as Santa Claus paid a visit to a festive gathering of all his pals. The man in red was guest of honour at the hotel’s annual Christmas tree party in aid of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Youngsters and the young at heart waited with bated breath as the magnificent 30-foot-tall Christmas tree sparkled into fullon festive dazzle after Santa officially switched on the venue’s Christmas lights. “Children big and small were invited to attend The Brehon Christmas tree party to meet Santa and to see the giant tree,” said Brian Bowler, manager, The Brehon. The Gleneagle Concert Band and The Presentation School Choir ensured there was plenty of rocking around the Christmas tree. “There were tasty treats, hot chocolate, mulled wine for Mom and Dad and lots of surprises,” added Mr Bowler. Of course, The Brehon Christmas Tree party is organised in aid of charity and afterwards Mr Bowler and his team made a presentation to the team from the Killarney branch of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

NEWS&VIEWS

Anne Lucey shares her views on happenings around Kerry and beyond in her new monthly column

IT MAKES HORSE SENSE “EXPRESSIONS of interest for a licence to operate a horse-drawn hackney carriage” – in other words a jarvey for a jaunting car – have been invited by Kerry County Council. The Killarney town licence is open to “citizens of and legal entities established within the European Economic Area”. Officially, there are 37 jarvey licences. There are more jarvey carriages than licences in the town, a judge in the High Court remarked recently, in a case in which it was claimed more were needed. The tradition of handing down a licence within jarvey families can no longer endure, the council said recently to motions to ring-fence licences for direct family members. There is one licence up for grabs in Killarney Town now because of a retirement. It is not clear from the public notice just what is required – but nowhere does it say you must know anything about a horse, which if you were operating a horse with passengers in among cars and buses and road trains might be a sensible, if not a first requirement. “Competition law” was the answer Maura HealyRae got when she raised the matter in September. She said whatever about competition law you would think you’d have to know about horses and jaunting cars and this was definitely within local families. Mayor of Killarney Brendan Cronin raised

it in November in the form of seeking to amend bylaws to secure tenure for next of kin and he was told there were legal proceedings in train. Therefore nothing could be done. Are these muzzling devices? Judicial proceedings, data protection competition law are the “Dear sirs” of the public service these days – standard high fences when it comes to seeking public information or getting things done. But here’s the thing: I enquired of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs (a gather-all for everything outside of The Pale) about the Muckross jarveys and if competition law was going to come into play there, as in the town. I was told the national park licences number 84. And, quote unquote: “Traditionally these are transferred to the next of kin. The Department is not aware of any issues surrounding the issuing of these licenses.” This arm of the State has no plans to change the next-of-kin tradition. Where is the joined-up thinking in this? I am reminded of the old Killarney jarvey stories, which of course are not legends and actually happened. An American lady leaned over the International Hotel balcony and enquired of the jarvey standing below with his hand on his horse, in her best American drawl, “Sir, how old is your ’orse?”

SPEAKING Of DEPARTMENTS

N

OSES were out of joint recently when the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, declined an invitation to an important tourism conference here. I suppose if the conference were in the Independent TD’s own constituency, it would be very important for him to show up. But this was in remote Kerry, a long way from Dublin, only easily reached by tourists from America to Zimbabwe. And with no party boss to whip him into shape…well there is nothing to be gained for the minister doing a jaunting car trip around the Lakes of Killarney even if he ended up in Ross Castle. But the real reason is probably the fact he is Minister for Transport…and Tourism and Sport. Isn’t it time there was a separate department and min-

istry for tourism? Aren’t we sick of hearing how important tourism is to Ireland? Overseas tourists spent just over €4.2 billion here in 2015. Irish tourists spent €1.3 billion and Northern Irish spent €300 million in the south. Kerry is more dependent on tourism than any other county: So our numerous Dáil and Senate members l money where mouth is… make tourism a separate economic ministry!

It took her a number of attempts before she finally got a reply. “Be God, Mam, if you’re that shtupid – ‘tis the same age as my head!” One does wonder is it head or horse sense that is involved in all these new laws!

ACK to the Jewel in the Crown of Killarney Tourism, the Killarney National Park. Red stags are being taken out by American hunter tourists paying high fees to guide companies who are somehow getting co-operation from local guides/landowners who are getting culling permits because of “crop damage” (crops in Muckross?), the country’s leading deer association claims. There is some evidence that had we enough ranger numbers, this kind of carry-on would be stamped upon more easily. There is also evidence that at least 18 people were injured, some seriously, in bike accidents flying around Muckross and Dinis. Apart from crashing into potholes, bikes are simply going too fast, and some are going the wrong way without a bell or without bothering to ring a bell. Some are training for triathlons and walkers have no chance on the shared paths. Even buggies have been overturned by high-flying cyclists. It was raised recently by John Sheahan, a keen walker who has had several frights from bikes himself near Dinis, and the anecdotes have flowed in.

In 2015 the busy people at the Victorian Dinis Tea Shop spent hours tending to the wounded and summoning the emergency services. Then there are dogs – I am now reluctant to use the lovely new entrance because of the number of “wolves” , unleashed, I meet. Last Sunday one of these muscular brown mutts was running alongside a child in a skateboard. No leash. Signs everywhere. Signs on their own have never been enough to stamp out bad behaviour. Not even in the Pyramids. No one wants a police park but we do need a policed park. We need more rangers for the people, as well as the animals. Ranger numbers are down to around a quarter of less than a decade ago and the park has never been more used. The good news is, according to the Department for Outside the Pale, a review is taking place and a Conservation Ranger recruitment campaign was advertised by on November 11. Let’s hope plenty of local people apply and they will know how to tackle all the wildlife – owners of dogs without leads, speeding cyclists as well as keeping Rudolf safe from the American rifle sights!

Barrett was on his first visit to the Rentokil Initial backed event. Third place in the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Stages Rally went to Owen Murphy who took maximum points in the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Historic Championship. Driving the iconic ex-Russell Brookes Sunbeam Lotus and despite being hampered by a misfire for most of the day, he set some excellent times on the seven stage event. With the top two finishers Ryan Barrett and Melvyn Evans not registered for the series Murphy took full advantage and is the early leader of the championship. Andy Johnson and Jim McSherry took fifth place but were the clear winners of the historic category, their Vauxhall Chevette completing the seven classic stages more than two minutes ahead of the Ford Escort of runner-up Keith McIvor. Seven times Circuit of Ireland winner Jimmy McRae showed that he has lost none of his fire by winning the Post-Historic section in a Vauxhall Firenza. Third place overall in the Killarney Historic Stages Rally (Classic category) means Owen Murphy leads the Clonakilty Blackpudding Irish Tarmac Historic Championship. Murphy was driving the iconic ex-Russell Brookes Sunbeam Lotus and despite being hampered by a misfire for most of the day, he set some excellent times on the seven stage event.

Celebrations for local crews THERE were huge celebrations as Pat and Tara Looney brought their Ford Escort Mk1 over the finish ramp of the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally as the best local crew on Saturday evening. The father-and-daughter team, from Kilcummin, set out to win the Jimmy Devane Memorial Trophy and drove a perfect rally to secure one of the most coveted awards on the event. Garage man Looney was a life-long friend of the late Jimmy Devane, a stalwart of Killarney and District Motor Club, who passed away after an illness in 2009. The memorial cup is presented annually to the highest placed all Kerry crew on the event. The Looneys were ninth fastest over the open stage, Moll’s Gap, before improving their position by one place on the next test that passed within a short distance of their home place. They maintained this position to the end of the seven-stage rally. Speaking at the start ramp, on Killarney’s High Street on Friday night, Pat outlined his ambitions to set about winning the trophy named after his great friend. Less than 24-hours later he and his daughter Tara were nearly in tears as they drove their Escort over the finish podium as winners. “It is a special feeling,” said Pat. “This is what we wanted. We set out to do it and...unbelievable.” Killarney crew Aidan Kennedy and Joe O’Leary reported a trouble free run on their way to winning their class in a Mini Cooper. Rathmore’s Donal O’Connor, a double Southern Four Historic Rally Champion, finished fifth his category driving a Ford Escort MK1. There was a local celebration in the keenly contested modified rally that runs in parallel to the main historic event. Rob Duggan and Ger Conway, the current British Junior Champions, switched from the usual frontwheel drive Vauxhall Adam to a rear-wheel-drive Ford Escort and led the category from start to finish. Amongst the top local finishers were Charlie and Johnny Hickey, Tadhg O'Sullivan and Eoin O'Leary. Denis Hickey and Sean Nolan, Paudie Callaghan and Danny Murphy, Sean Hickey and Noel Fleming.

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Education takes centre stage in Killarney

A GATHERING in Killarney during the week turned the spotlight on postprimary religious education in contemporary Ireland. Secondary school principals, religious education co-ordinators and chaplains gathered in The Brehon Hotel to explore and support the unction of religous education. “The experience of the spiritual, the sense of sacred and the ever constant search for meaning and value are integral to the human condition,” said Kerry Diocesan spokeswoman Mary Fagan. “The Junior and Leaving Cycle Frameworks highlight how religion and religious education contribute to the spiritual and moral development of young people. The speakers for the evening will address how religious education plays a vital role in supporting young people as they begin to ask significant questions and formulate their own way of living.” The speakers, who included Dr Amalee Meehan and Mr Declan Coyle, also addressed the place of RE in the revision of the Junior Cycle Framework. Dr Amalee Meehan works with CEIST in the area of faith leadership and governance and teaches part-time in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Her address explores the situation regarding the increasing loneliness and lack of resilience documented among young people and the ongoing spiritual hunger prevalent in Western culture. The second speaker, Declan Coyle, is an internationally known management consultant, motivator, and mentor, with a background in theology. Declan addressed the Red and Green Platform system, a system of leadership and motivation which has revolutionised leadership thinking in companies. In addition to being the director of Andec Communications, Declan has worked with government ministers and departments, multinational companies and charities.

Singing out to help Aware A FESTIVE concert with a difference, 'What Is Christmas?' had its inaugural performance in December 2015 at the Church of The Resurrection, Park Road, Killarney. The concert was organised by Grace Foley in aid of the charity Aware and the team is pulling out all the stops again this Sunday, December 11, when the second annual concert takes place at 7.30pm. The concept for the concert was the brainchild of the Killarney singer who says, “Christmas can be such a magical, happy time of year, but it can also be a very difficult time for some people. I was aware of the fact that some people feel quite low and alone at Christmas and all the festivities and celebrations can be very overwhelming. I wanted to organise a concert that highlights all the different aspects to Christmas.” Grace will be joined by MC Liz Ryan, St Oliver's Primary School Choir led by Josephine Doncel, the newly formed Killarney School of Music Senior and Junior Choirs, violinist Niamh O’Raw, soloist Ciaran Quigley, pianists Jayme Linehan and Noel O’Sullivan, guitarists Conor Linehan and Paul O’Raw, the Church Of The Resurrection folk group 'Risen', and a group of Grace's singing students. Grace will be singing on the night herself also. “All funds raised on the night will go to

Aware, and the funds donated will help Aware continue to provide support and information services to people impacted by depression, as well as education programmes,” said Grace.

Grace Foley.

EAST KERRY SFC FINAL

Rathmore powers to glory to raise O’Donoghue Cup By John O’Leary, Kerry GAA PRO A HAT TRICK of titles was celebrated by Rathmore on Sunday following its District Board victory over Dr Crokes. Rathmore proved a bogey team once again for county and Munster champions Dr Crokes in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. John Moynihan’s goal separated the sides at the break with Rathmore leading by 1-8 to 0-8 and another goal from Mark Reen, this time from the penalty spot, saw Rathmore make it three-ina-row for the first time on a score of 2-12 to 0-13 with Shane Ryan named as man of the match for the second year in a row. Meanwhile, also completing three-in-a-row titles was St Mary’s, which added another South Kerry title to their collection when proving too strong for Skellig Rangers at Con Keating Park on Saturday last. The winners led by 0-8 to 1-2 at the break with Diarmuid Keating’s goal giving the Portmagee side some hope for the second half, however, with man-of-the-match recipient Denis Daly, Dara O’Sullivan and Conor O’Shea in fine form, and Bryan Sheehan and Sean Cournane picking off the scores, St Mary's it is who are Jack Murphy Cup winners once again.

Dermot and Dave hit the road for nationwide tour THE catchphrase “Ah sure, lookit!” will be ringing out across Ireland’s highways and byways as Today FM Duo Dermot and Dave take to the roads for a nationwide comedy tour which will lead them to the INEC Killarney on March 16, 2017. The radio show’s lunchtime presenters, Dermot Whelan and Dave Moore, will present the ‘Ah Sure Lookit’ tour in what is the first time the pair has taken to the stage for a comedy gig. They debuted their comedy show at the first Cork Comedy Festival in September of this year and the following month at the Vodafone Comedy Carnival in Galway. Both shows sold out in record time. Dermot and Dave are well used to each other, having worked together in radio for over 12 years. The tour will take in almost every corner of Ireland with 15 dates scheduled from March to 2017. Asked what people can expect from

their stand up show, Dermot Whelan said: “Imagine a bonkers radio show that grows legs and arms and a head and starts firing out craic and waving its arms like an angry King Kong in that movie. Not even close.” Dave Moore added: “It’s all our listeners’ favourite characters, stand-up, improvised comedy, music and an interactive gardening segment – what’s not to love?!” Listeners to The Dermot & Dave Show on Today FM will be familiar with their weekly ‘Ah Sure Lookit’ feature where friend of the show ‘Mac from Carlow’ gives random clues and people are asked to guess what it is Mac is talking about. Although the comedy show has nothing to do with the feature, the lads just like the name! Tickets, €29, go on sale from Thursday, December 8, from www.inec. ie, www.ticketmaster.ie or from the INEC box office on 064-6671555.

Grace Notes Church concert in aid of Aware

Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley is delighted to present the second-annual church concert in aid of Aware

IN DECEMBER 2015 I decided to run a church concert in aid of Aware and I am delighted to say that I am doing it again this year. I began to realise that Christmas can be a very different experience for everyone. I have often heard people say that Christmas is their favourite time of year but I have also heard others say that they find it to be quite a dark and difficult time. While all the lights are twinkling it is important that we acknowledge that the lights do not shine quite so brightly for everyone.

The concert is broken up into different sections dealing with both the celebration and the more harsh reality of the festive season. I do not want people to leave this event feeling sad, quite the opposite in fact. I want people to leave feeling uplifted and enlightened. Last year's concert was such a great success and many people said

they were very touched by the music, words and images. We combine singers from children to adults and from soloists to choirs. We are also lucky to have some very talented musicians on board as well as our wonderful MC, Liz Ryan.

I love how the simple act of a person, or a number people, sharing their musical gift can have such a deep impact on others. Words are powerful. Music is powerful. Images are powerful. If you combine all three of these you can create something that is truly both thought provoking and moving. I believe that it is so important that we share our talents not just for ourselves but for the good of others. The concert, titled, 'What I Christmas?', will take place on Sunday, December 11, at 7.30pm at the Church of the Resurrection, Killarney. Please come along and become more aware of what Christmas means to you.

GOOD NEWS FROM THE SAW DOCTORS

IN WHAT is some very good news for Saw Doctors fans Davy Carton has just received a brilliant report from his Galway voice coach Michel who says Davy is making great headway with the rehab of his damaged vocal cords and will be back singing shows with The Saw Doctors early next year. Also we’re happy to confirm a rescheduled concert in Killarney on Saturday, March 25. Tickets for the cancelled concert (December 27) will need to be changed for the new date – old tickets will not be valid. Contact the INEC box -office on 064-6671555 for more information if needed.

AA WEEKLY WEEKLY ROUND-UP ROUND-UP OF OF NEWS NEWS + + A TANGLED WEB

OUTCRY AT TROPHY HUNTERS THE alleged incident in which an American trophy hunter boasted off how he paid €5,000 to shoot a protected red deer has sickened the country. While the claim that the game hunter bought a Section 42 permit (which unknown to him is illegal) is being investigated, it makes one think of trophy hunting on a global scale. The death of Cecil the Lion in June 2015 at the hands of American trophy hunter Walter Palmer sparked an international outcry. It prompted the British government to commission a report to investigate how it could enhance lion conservation and whether it should review the rules for importing animal trophies into the country. But the report, written by Oxford University’s Professor David Macdonald, has been criticised by some wildlife charities for concluding that when trophy was well regulated and transparent, it had the potential to contribute to lion conservation. Professor Macdonald, who is the Director of the Wildlife Conservation Unit, is however not the only scientist to reach this conclusion. A briefing paper by the IUCN published last April also highlighted that trophy hunting could have a number of conservation benefits, if it was well managed and offered opportunities to local communities. Both documents condemn the unsustainable hunting that takes place in many corners of the globe – and of which Cecil the lion is perhaps the most dramatic example. But rather than banning trophy hunting altogether, they point out it might be interesting to think about how to promote sustainable hunting practices. Personally, I find trophy hunting sickening and unnecessary full stop. Lions, those most iconic of African wildlife, have suffered a devastating decline in recent years. The global lion population is estimated to have decreased by approximately 42% over the past two decades, with fewer than 20,000 animals now remaining. I cannot see how trophy hunting could possibly for the greater good. Do you have an opinion you would like to air on the above or any other issue? Killarney Advertiser 09.12.16

IT IS impossible to measure the influence of the web on our lives. It is vast and seems to have the ability not just to follow us but to anticipate our next thought and our next move. It is omnipresent and omniscient. It brings our homes into a whole lot of new worlds and exposes us to influences we never knew existed, yet it gives the impression of privacy. No one knows who’s at the other end or even how many ends there are on the other side or even if there is an end at all. There’s a reason why it is called the “web”. And it is indeed a tangled web. We have been told of young people being radicalised on the net. There can be many forms of radicalisation and they’re not all political but all lead to endangerment and we need to be aware of what’s going on in our own homes. Organised criminal gangs are blackmailing growing numbers of young men after using social media to entice them into compromising positions on screen. Police in the UK have revealed an unprecedented rise in the new crime of webcam blackmail with more than 900 cases reported so far this year. That is already more than double the total for the whole of 2015. But senior officers at the National Crime Agency fear the true scale of the problem is far bigger, with many victims too ashamed to report their involvement to police. Among recent victims were four young men who became so desperate at the thought of being publicly humiliated that they took their own lives. Police are now launching a campaign to raise awareness of the problem, including a hardhitting film to be shown on Facebook, YouTube

and other social media platforms to warn of the dangers of entrapment. The phenomenon has mushroomed alongside the use of social media by growing numbers of people, particularly in their teens and twenties. Some of the victims are as young as 14. While the majority are in the 18 to 24 age bracket, there are also some in their 50s to 80s. More than 90% of victims are male. The crime is deceptively simple, typically involving the intended victim being approached through social media by an ostensibly attractive young woman who entices the victim into engaging in explicit conversation culminating in a sex act. As soon as the act has been caught on camera the victim receives a demand for cash, ranging typically from £50 to £500, with the treat the recorded film will be sent to all their friends and contacts - downloaded while the victim was online - and broadcast across the internet. Behind the young woman used to enticing the victim on-screen will lie an organised crime gang. British police have traced a number of the gangs to Morocco, the Philippines and the Ivory Coast. Among the other victims this year was a man in his 20s from Northern Ireland who was blackmailed after being approached on through a dating app by a young woman. Police advice social media users never to do anything compromising online with someone they don’t know or trust; cease all contact immediately if they receive a blackmail demand; never under any circumstance pay the blackmailer; and immediately report the matter to the police.

VIEWS VIEWS FROM FROM KERRY KERRY AND AND AROUND AROUND THE THE WORLD WORLD LOOK TO THE HEAVENS THIS SEASON With the long winter nights, Christmas in the air and children bringing home stories of the star of Bethlehem, people are more inclined to stop and take notice of the sky, says Trevor O’Donoghue THE winter night sky is full of bright stars and the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, is to be found in the east late these evenings, rising earlier and earlier as the winter progresses. But the sight that is most striking, is to be found in the southwest after sunset. A dazzling “star” that it’s easily the brightest object in the night sky after the moon. It climbs slightly higher each evening, until mid January when it starts to move back towards the setting sun, eventually lost in its glare only to re-emerge some weeks later in the morning sky. This “star” is in fact the planet Venus, our celestial neighbour and second closest planet to the sun after Mercury. It is known as the morning star or evening star, due to it being found shortly after sunset in the evening sky, or shortly before sunrise in the morning sky. Venus is a hot, rocky world where average temperatures are 425 degrees Celsius, and a runaway greenhouse effect has taken hold. The year is 225 earth days long and on Venus a day lasts 243 earth days! Look

Russia trying to destabilise Germany, says intelligence agency at it through a small telescope and it is easy to track as it goes through phases like the moon. At the moment it is almost three quarters full. But back to the star of Bethlehem. Could it have been Venus? Some think it was a comet or a supernova, whilst others think it could have been a number of bright planets lining up alongside each other in the night sky. Whatever it was, the bright object in the sky, glittering and twinkling in the southwest after sunset, spreading Christmas magic is most definitely the planet Venus. • Feeling curious about the world around you? RUSSIA is trying to destabilise German society and the state with propaganda campaigns and cyber attacks, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency said. The warning from Germany’s BfV agency comes less than a year before the country is expected to hold a general election. Agency chief HansGeorg Maassen said in a statement that “there is growing evidence for attempts to influence the federal election next year”. His agency has seen an increase in “aggressive cyber-espionage” targeting German politicians. Russia has been blamed for the hacking and release of Democratic National Committee emails before the US presidential election. Mr Maassen said “automated opinion forming” with so-called bots could be used to spread fake news on social media. Russia has previously strongly denied its involvement in orchestrating cyber attacks on foreign soil.

Beaufort student is top of the class CONGRATULATIONS to Katie Digby from Beaufort who was the recipient of an award for academic excellence by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA Ireland) as she was conferred with membership of CPA Ireland on Saturday last in Croke Park. The award marks her accomplishments in the CPA Ireland examinations and best performance in the paper on Auditing. At this week’s ceremony, which took place in Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland’s newest accountants had many reasons to celebrate. In addition to being admitted to the institute, the members of the Class of 2016 were also celebrating the strong career prospects for professional accountants. High demand for newly qualified CPAs has resulted in full employment for this year’s graduates. Speaking at the ceremony, Nano Brennan CPA Ireland President, said: “I am delighted to welcome my new CPA colleagues to the profession as we mark our 90th anniversary. Our anniversary takes place against the positive backdrop of demand for professional accountants and growth in the wider economy. The full employment for this year’s graduating class clearly shows that it is a valuable qualification and one that opens a lot of doors both nationally and internationally. I would like to congratulate all of our newest CPAs for their hard work and achievements to date.” “In conjunction with our sponsors, CPA Ireland each year present an award to those students who have achieved the highest examination mark in each subject for the CPA examinations. Congratulations to the 2016 prize-winners who come from diverse roles in both practice and industry and thank you to all our partner firms involved in this event.”

Paul Heaney, Director Education & Training, CPA Ireland, Suzanne Burdis, Griffith College, CPA Prize Winner Professional 1 Auditing, Kate Digby, Richard O’Hanrahan (Leinster Society of CPAs Award sponsored by Leinster Society of CPAs).

Garden Magic Creating awareness of sustainable soil

With World Soil Day having taken place during the week, Debby Looney has some advice for her fellow gardeners

YOU may or may not have heard of World Soil Day, as it has been celebrated by mainly scientists since 2002, when the UN passed a resolution dedicating December 5 to the world’s soil. Much soil has been eroded, degraded or covered over by concrete, so much so that it is becoming an endangered commodity. As we gardeners know, most of our food comes from the soil (in fact, 95% of it), so let us play a small part in creating awareness of it. The official UN website, www.fao. org, has very interesting facts, videos and inspirational stories on it, as well as posters and other educational content for teachers and parents. It is all available for download and printing. There are even season’s greetings cards to print, which is a great way to spread the word, as well as being cost-effective and fun for kids to put together. Each year there is

a theme, this year’s one is “soil and pulses – a symbiosis for life”. Growing legumes releases nitrogen in the soil, improving soil health. Growing clover, for example, near your hedge, will improve the colour and growth of that hedge, while having the added benefit of attracting bees. Plants which are looking good at the moment are Skimmias. Their lovely berries, and in the case of the male variety, “Rubella”, the flowers, are decorative and also very handy for flower arranging. The Viburnum tinus variety, “Gwenllian”, is also flowering at this time of year. It has a delicate pink bud and the white flowers are also tinged with pink. So, whether you are a vegetable grower, or an ornamental gardener, take the time to appreciate the soil! Oh, and bring the next generation out with you!

Killarney Legion to honour underage players THIS Sunday, December 11, Killarney Legion GAA Club will gather to honour its under-14 team who won both the East Kerry League (Division 1) and the East Kerry Championship, and also the Under 16s who were victorious in the East Kerry Championship. It was an historic year for the club to capture those three titles. “East Kerry is acknowledged as the foremost division in the county and to win these three competitions is indeed a remarkable feat,” said Enda Walshe, club chairman. “We are extremely proud of these achievements. Indeed, some of the players even won the East Kerry Under 15 Super Touch title as well.” To celebrate these great wins the club will welcome All-Ireland minor-winning manager Peter Keane to a function in the Killarney Avenue Hotel at 7pm. “Peter managed us in 2014 and 2015 to great effect and then led the Kerry minors to glory in 2016. Playing a superb brand of football, they captured the county's imagination with their win,” said Enda. The club’s honorary life member, inspirational accessibility advocate Joanne O’Riordan will also address the gathering. “The International Young Person of the World award winner is a great supporter of the club and it would be great to see a big turnout for the players, Peter and Joanne,” said Enda.

2016 F1 CHAMPION RETIRES

Route 66 plays America the Beautiful as long as you stick to the speed limit

NICO ROSBERG shocked the F1 world when he announced his retirement 5 days after he was crowned the 2016 F1 World Champion. Rosberg has turned his back on an €18m contract with AMG Mercedes. An incredibly brave decision to take at the top of his game. Rosberg beat his teammate Lewis Hamilton who held the title for the past two years. Beating the talent that is Hamilton is one thing but putting up with him as a teammate is another and Rosberg has shown true professionalism through this year’s campaign against Hamilton’s whining. The race to fill Rosberg’s seat will be as thrilling as the last race in Brazil. Where do you start for Mercedes, they have the choice of the paddock given they have the best car, Alonso and Vettel want to win sooner than later, Ricciardo would like to distance himself from Verstappen, Bottas could be drafted in turn for a better engine deal for cash strapped Williams, Mercedes backed drivers, Ocon or Wehrlein could be drafted in, the list goes on. What is certain is that F1 will be alive over the winter months.

ON A desolate stretch of Route 66, between Albuquerque and Tijeras, the road plays 'America the Beautiful'. Route 66, the part that passes through Albuquerque and Tijeras in New Mexico is a particularly desolate stretch of road. So when the New Mexico Department of Transportation decided it was time for it to change, no one envisaged they would come up with a road that hums a tune. But by carefully adding grooves into the road, they have enabled drivers to hear America the Beautiful when you drive over them. The only catch is you need to drive at the speed limit of 72kph. According to Matt Kennicott from the Smithsonian, the engineering feat is pretty simple. He says that anything vibrating at 330 times per second will produce the note 'E'. So for a road to play a tune, you need to ensure the car hits 330 strips in one second at 72kph. This means that the rumble strips need to be placed 6cm apart. 09.12.16 Killarney Advertiser

Last LaFerrari raises e7.5m for charity FERRARI has raised €7.5 million for the victims of August’s earthquake in central Italy by selling its final LaFerrari. All proceeds of the sale will go towards the reconstruction efforts in the area affected by the quake. Said to have been presented as a gift by Ferrari to its home country, the final LaFerrari comes painted in red with subtle twin white lines that begin at the hypercar’s nose and circle the rear engine cover. A small painted Italian flag on the nose and a commemorative plaque marks what will now be, without doubt, the world’s most valuable LaFerrari. Originally, Ferrari claimed it would only make 499 LaFerrari coupes with production ending back in 2015.

PICTURE SUPPLIED BY MOMENTS IN TIME

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Closure of Cluain Fhionnain at Ballydribeen WITH reference to their recent inspection of the Cluain Fhionnain centre at Ballydribeen I wish to state that I feel it is rather disingenuous of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) to state that the staff have stymied progress on this movements of clients from residential to community setting and am rather amazed on their lack of clarity on some aspects of same. Having spent 45 years of my working life in the psychiatric services in Kerry and 30 of those years in the area of community psychiatry I feel that I am also quite qualified to make my own observations on this issue. When I entered the service in 1955, St Finan’s had a patient population of 1,200, and conditions were primitive for both patients and staff. Over the subsequent 50 years both the medical nursing and other staff disciplines worked tirelessly to improve matters with an aspiration that this institution would be replaced by a community care model which has been accomplished. To support this viewpoint, I will now include some extracts from the recently published history of St Finan’s Hospital entitled "A Medical Sporting and Social History of St Finan’s", copies of which are still available. "In October 1998 the Chief Psychia-

trist Dr Brendan Lynch confirmed the closure of St Finan’s Hospital which was an integral plan of the SHB seven-year plan. A number of wards have been closed and it is planned to transfer patients from the hospital to high support hostels on a phased basis," In 1995 the staff union rep Donie Doody stated that the one million from the sale of land at Gortroe should be used to develop psychiatric services in Kerry. Mr Doody also called for the development of services for intellectual disabilities, intensive care units and a sector mental health centre in Killarney and in 1995 the building of this £1-2 million unit for people with intellectual disabilities was announced. This project to include six residential units for five people each to be transferred from St Finan’s to what is now Cluain Fhionnain at Ballydribeen. The total cost of this project was £900,000 for the residential unit and £300,000 for the day centre In 1996 Donie Doody called on Killarney Town Council to provide appropriate support services for the 260 patients who would be leaving St Finan’s Hospital when the hospital finally closed its doors. When then Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) was established its union reps continued to lobby for improved

conditions for both those suffering from psychiatric disorders and intellectual disabilities and it is through such lobbying that many of those improvements have been achieved and nowadays psychiatric nurses are recruited from the local colleges and universities who train them to a high standard. I also wish to emphasise that the transition from the hospital to community settings was very much on a phased basis with close monitoring of the suitability of each client for their transfer to a community setting and such monitoring was very much part of the duties of the medical and nursing staff and even nowadays there is still a certain number of such clients still catered for in a high support fully staffed hostel setting. Akin to the aforementioned developments I feel that the staff who are in daily contact with the residents of Cluain Fhionnain are best qualified to assess the suitability of the various residents for their transfer to a community setting and if this should be undertaken on a phased basis as has been the policy in all areas of the psychiatric services in St Finan’s where those clients were once resident. In relation to the term "special", I wish to explain that this term referred to a special category of clients

who may be prone to engaging in self harm and required "special care" and monitoring until the condition improved and I feel that HIQA should be familiar with such a term without having to be educated by the staff on its application. Finally we must all take cognisance of the fact that finance has always been an impediment to having improvements made in both the psychiatric and intellectual disabilities sectors and thankfully we have made some movement from the days when the rate payers of the county had to be ejected from the hospital committee meetings when an increase in the local rates was being requested for improvements to the level of care in those areas. While fully accepting the vital role that HIQA have in the area of health improvement we must also acknowledge the vast experience that nurses have accumulated over many years in their profession and experience can be a vital ingredient in decision-making in our daily lives. John Kelly, Retired Community Nurse, Chairman, St Finan’s Historical Society

In loving memory of Nathan O’Carroll, late of Ross Road, Killarney whose Anniversary occurs on the 16th of December.

Down the path of memories We gently tread today Our thoughts and prayers are with you As life goes on its way

Christmas in Heaven I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below, With tiny lights, like Heaven’s stars, Reflecting on the snow, The sight is so spectacular! Please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas Choir up here. I have no words to tell you the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing. I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart, But I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart. So be happy for me dear ones. You know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year. I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above. I send you each a memory of my undying love After all “Love” is the gift, more precious than pure gold, It was always more important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Father said to do, For I can’t count the blessings or love he has for you. So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear. Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

Always remembered by her sons, daughters and families. Anniversary Mass on Friday, 9th December, 2016, at 6.15pm at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney. Kindly remember today her husband Michael who died on 9th July 1995 and daughter Noreen who died on 4th January 2010.

Superb Rathmore capture third O’Donoghue Cup in a row Rathmore are the toast of East Kerry as the Crokes suffer a discouraging defeat, writes Adam Moynihan IT’S UNUSUAL for a team seeking three-in-a-row to go into a final as underdogs but so explosive have the Crokes been all year (and in the last couple of weeks in particular), few expected Rathmore to prevail in this particular O’Donoghue Cup final. Nevertheless an excellent team performance saw them overcome an early four-point deficit to become only the second club in the history of the competition to win three consecutive championships. Crokes made some changes to their regular starting fifteen, most notably in the forward division where talented youngsters Micheál Burns, Jordan Kiely and Tony Brosnan were all handed starts. The decision to go with youth appeared to be paying

off in the first half when three points apiece from Kiely and Burns helped Crokes to a 0-7 to 0-3 lead. But John Moynihan, an eternal thorn in Crokes’ side, fired Rathmore back into contention with a goal in the twenty-third minute and they went on to kick five of the next six scores to take a three-point lead (1-8 to 0-8) into half time. The Killarney side failed to make inroads in the opening stages of the second as the Rathmore defence came to the fore and the game swung irreversibly in the defending champions’ favour with a contentious decision in the forty-seventh minute. Full forward Shane Ryan, who was a real handful all day, appeared to have reached an impasse as he carried

Rugby news & views LAST weekend, Munster notched up another win – their sixth win in a row, this time against reigning PRO 12 champions Glasgow away in Scotstoun. This continues the winning way for Munster following Axel’s death last October and wouldn’t he be very proud of his charges? Glasgow beat us twice last season and we have beaten them twice in the space of 6 weeks already this season. There were plenty of stand out moments in last Friday’s game. Watching Sweetnam catch the high ball with one hand was straight off the hurling pitch, while Keatley’s last gasp drop goal to seal the win bring as much excitement

the ball into the Crokes box. With no other options available, he took a desperate swipe at goal but, surrounded by black and amber shirts, he failed to make contact with the ball and fell to the ground. He probably was impeded but it appeared as though there was very little the defenders could have done to avoid contact. The referee signalled for a penalty and Mark Reen stepped up to strike the ball convincingly past Shane Murphy and open up a six-point lead. The Munster champions were on the ropes. It’s very easy to say it in hindsight but with a six-point deficit to turn around this late in the game, it would have been an ideal time to bring on the likes of Brosnan, Kiely and Burns. As it turned out, Crokes were unable to make any real impact with their substitutions. They

to a match as you can get. These are the kind of games that children should watch, to see moments of brilliance like these. Next up for the Red Army, it’s back-to-back matches against Leicester Tigers in the European Champions Cup and then a St Stephen’s day match against old rivals Leinster at Thomond Park in the PRO 12. It’s fantastic to hear Fortress Thomond back in full voice and hopefully the boys will continue this good run of results. Come on Munster!

new coaches joining us each season. Having recently completed the Munster Rugby Coaching Development Course in Tralee, this first aid course will strengthen the newer coaches own skills as well as add to the wealth of experience of the coaches who are with the club much longer. Of course teaching children the required skills to play rugby is important for any coach, however safety is our number one priority in the Minis section of the club.

Last Tuesday, ten of our coaches took part in First Aid Training at Scott's Hotel as part of Killarney RFC’s commitment to coach development. As a growing club, we are very fortunate to have more and more

Each of the coaches thoroughly enjoyed the course and the club must be commended for investing in its coaches at all ages. Keep posted for more next week.

were perhaps guilty, too, of going for goal a bit early - they had numerous opportunities to chip away at the lead with handy scores but after the penalty they had nothing but goals on the brain. In the end the goals never came and Rathmore held on for a well-deserved clean sheet. It was magnificent team display and they certainly weren’t flattered by the 2-12 to 0-13 scoreline. Regardless of what their opponents did or didn’t do, Rathmore deserve a huge amount of credit for not only their performance last Sunday but for what they’ve done in the competition over the past three years. It’s a remarkable achievement and one that won’t be forgotten any time soon. The Crokes might be the best team in Munster but, confusingly, Rathmore are the best team in East Kerry.

St Paul’s courts success with primary school blitz By Eamonn Keogh

THE penultimate squash competition of 2016 was unique in that it was held on a Friday night with Majic and Farook Kahn leading their teams through the group stages to reach this month’s final. Sponsored by Christy Quill of Strand House, Dingle, November saw unprecedented levels of participation with upwards of 60 competitors taking part. First up we had Adrian McCarthy and Ivor Barton who gave a display of all action squash but it was McCarthy’s power that saw him take this one 3-0, first blood to Team Majic. Next on the night were Tim Lynch and Brendan Counihan, both of whom had played well in their respective semi-finals. Indeed, this game was no different as it went the distance taking five games to separate the pair, Brendan winning 3-2 in the end. At this early stage it was one match apiece overall, however, Oscar’s 3-0 win over Ger Foley meant that the advantage now laid with Farook’s team. Liam Shine took on Don Ring in the next game, Don needed to win this to

ensure Farook didn’t walk away with the spoils. But it was Liam’s guile and deft touch that saw him exploiting the angles to take the match 3-0. This in turn meant that the night as a contest was over but the two skippers faced off for bragging rights. Some great squash was played by both Majic and Farook keeping those watching entertained but it was Majic’s fitness and vast array of shots that saw him win on a scoreline of 3-0 and restore some pride in the process. Thanks again to Quills of Strand House for their sponsorship and of course to the Aquila Club for their continued co-operation. As you read this the final competition of the year will be underway with the finals scheduled to take place on Thursday, December 15, followed by the annual Aquila Club Christmas Party. Finally, training for juveniles continues on Friday nights at 7.30pm. If you are interested in playing squash, pop in to the Aquila Club for details on how to get involved. All are welcome!

On the occasion of Killarney Celtic’s 40th anniversary, current senior star Brendan Falvey talks Adam Moynihan through a talented side made up of the best players he’s ever played with in the green and white

GK Shane Murphy An exceptional shot-stopper and very vocal with his back four. His distribution is another key. He’s equally good with his left and right. He was a sweeper really when he played with us, it was like playing with an extra outfielder with him in goal.

CB

Alan Nagle

David O'Sullivan

Brian Spillane

A lot of people probably see him play football and think he’d be a striker but he was actually a very good centre half. Normally a defender might just be rooting and tearing but he was able to take the ball and calm situations down and he was very good in the air for a fella who wasn’t too big.

You could talk to anyone who has played with Brian and he’d nearly be the first man on their teamsheet. He has a physical presence, he’s vocal... He’s just always on-key. What you see is what you get with him.

I played with Alan in his later years I suppose but he had trials with Celtic when he was 15 or 16 and his technical ability was second to none. He could get up and down the line as well, even when he was pushing on a bit.

Terence is the fella I’ve played the most soccer with down through the years. When I played left midfield he was always behind me at left back. He was very comfortable on the ball, vocal and very tough. He’d never pull out of a tackle.

He played right back with our youths team but I had to squeeze him in somewhere. Chris is very versatile, you could play him centre back, centre midfield, anywhere really and he’d do a job for you.

Gary weaves around midfield, he just glides. You wouldn’t even notice the work he puts in. He can use both legs and he’s just exceptionally good on the ball so I had to include him.

I didn’t play that much with Doyler but over the years he’s probably been one of the best Celtic players of all time so he had to be in there. He was a very good box-to-box midfielder and well able in the tackle and in the air even though, again, he wasn’t that big in stature.

LM

ST

ST

John McDonagh

Jojo Fleming

Peter McCarthy

I could have put him left back too but I had to fit him in somewhere. Smiley is a true Celtic man. He always gives his best for the team and he’s always training. He’s very committed.

I played a bit of B soccer with Jo when I was coming to the end of youths and people look at him and think “Nah, this fella can’t do anything,” and he’d literally run rings around guys. He didn’t have much pace but he was always in the right place for a striker.

If you’re looking for your ultimate poacher, someone to score a goal, that’s what you’re getting with Peter. He obviously played with Ireland and even just for his outlook at training and games he was great. He was always prepared.

SUBS: Donagh Barry Donagh could play either right back or centre half. He was coming to the end of his career when I played with him but he had a lot of ability on the ball and he was a good passer. He’s done a lot for the club over the years. David Hayes Hayes’ organisational skills for the back four were phenomenal. You wouldn’t be falling asleep at the back with him there - he’d really keep you on your toes. He played a lot of

Oscar Traynor [for Kerry] and was probably unlucky not to go across the water for a couple of trials. Jamie Spillane Centre midfield is Jamie’s home, that’s where he operates. He can really pick a pass - he can put a ball through the eye of a needle to be honest. And he can move around the pitch as well, even though he’s a little on the bigger side.

Joe Hurley Joe can pick passes that no one else can see. He’s a bit like the Gooch, he’d pull off a pass that someone else wouldn’t look at. I’ve only played with him couple of years but you can see his ability. If you want to keep the ball, Joe is your man. Peter Gunda Peter was a striker from Slovakia who played with us for a year. For a physical guy he could move, he was pacey, he could go and make

pass… He could do everything really. He was a complete centre forward. Manager: James Hurley He’s been involved in a lot of teams I’ve played with. The majority of trophies I’ve won with Celtic, Hurley has either been a trainer or a manager or a sub keeper. He’s given a lot to the club and won a lot so I had to put him in there.

Rathmore crowned champions of East Kerry for Crokes defeat. Congratulations to a wonderful Rathmore team who were fully deserving of this historic victory.

Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews the East Kerry SFC at the Fitzgerald Stadium RATHMORE ended 2016 on a high note when they defeated Dr Crokes by 2-12 to 0-13 in the final of the East Kerry SFC at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. There was no doubt about it, but the better team won on the day and Crokes were a spent force in the final quarter as Rathmore sensed victory and grew in stature as the game progressed. Goals win matches and Crokes so often the great goal getters were denied by a Rathmore defence which excelled after the first quarter. The first crucial goal came in the 23rd minute when ace goal poacher John Moynihan weaved his way through the Crokes defence for a well-taken goal. Crokes were leading by four points at that juncture. Shane Ryan, who proved so influential, added a point so all of a sudden Crokes lead of seven points to three was cut. In the 25th minute it was level 0-8 to 1-5. That was as good as it got for Crokes. RATHMORE LED AT HALF-TIME Points from Shane Ryan, Mark Reen and Conor O’Sullivan left the half time score 1-8 to 8 points. The signs were ominous for Crokes. They had dominated most of the first half but were very wasteful in their shooting. Both Kieran O’Leary and Daithí Casey spurned great goal chances and Moynihan scored the chance that

came his way. The Rathmore midfield of the ageless veteran Aidan O’Mahony and team captain Brendan O’Keeffe had the measure of Ambrose o Donavan and Johnny Buckley while up front Mark Reen and Shane Ryan proved Rathmore’s most valuable players. Rathmore defence made it very difficult for Crokes to claw back that 3 point deficit and they were still three points clear 1-9 to 0-9 when Shane Ryan was fouled in the square and up stepped Mark Reen to make it a 6 point game 16 minutes in to the second half. Would Crokes be able to make inroads in to that Rathmore lead? No way as Rathmore played like real champions and completely dominated that final quarter to earn a well deserved win and their first three-in-a-row of O’Donoghue Cups. All the Rathmore players played like champions. MISSING PLAYERS Crokes started without four of the team that won the Munster club on Sunday last. These were John Payne, Gavin O’Shea, Brian Looney and Eoin Brosnan. The latter came on at half time for David O’Leary. Brian Looney also came on during the second half. But even with the loss of that starting quartet will not be put forward as a reason

NA FÓIRNE Rathmore: K O’Keeffe, M J Kelliher, J O’Sullivan, C Jenkins, P Murphy, C O’Sullivan, C Murphy, A Mahony, B O'Keeffe, D O’Sullivan, E Lawlor, G O’Keeffe, J Moynihan, S Ryan, M Reen; Dr Crokes: S Murphy, L Quinn, M Moloney, F Fitzgerald, G White, A O’Sullivan, David O’Leary, A O’Donovan, J Buckley, D Casey, M Burns, J Kiely, C Cooper, K O’Leary, T Brosnan; réiteoir: Donal Casey, Scartaglin. MAURICE FITZGERALD JOINS KERRY SELECTORS Former two-time All Ireland Football winner Maurice Fitzgerald has joined Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s management team as a selector in place of Diarmuid Murphy who stepped down earlier this year after six years in the position. Eamonn Fitzmaurice welcomed the appointment of his former teammate to the management team; “I am delighted to welcome Maurice into the Kerry senior football setup. His football knowledge, work ethic and personality will be a huge asset to us." Fitzgerald will join Trainer/Selector: Padraig Corcoran (Dingle) and selectors Mikey Sheehy (Austin Stacks) and Liam Hassett (Laune Rangers) as part of the backroom team.

THURLES 2001 We remember Maurice for his role in the 1997 All Ireland final which ended the 11-year famine for Kerry and also that dramatic sideline kick v Dublin in 2001 at Thurles. That levelling point is crystal clear in the memory of the Kerry supporters. No one else would even have tried it, especially with Tommy Carr shouting at him from the Dublin dugout. It did not matter as Fitzgerald bent his shot between the posts for a miraculous score. It was a superb kick from a super player. It was even better than Ronan O'Gara’s late late kick which won the 2009 Grand Slam. I spoke to Maurice a few weeks ago and told him he had so much to offer as a Kerry selector. “Are you interested, Maurice?” I had guessed his answer even before he replied. “Yerra what would I be doing in there. Sure I have enough to do with the Marys.” He managed them to All Ireland Club IFC victory. A wink from the genius indicated that he did not rule it out, if and when the offer came from Eamonn Fitzmaurice. He is a much laid back character, but what many may not realise is that underneath it all there is toughness and that bit of steel will stand to him in his new role. His appointment will be a very popular with the Kerry supporters.

KERRY REFEREES MEET The new “mark” rule in Gaelic football which comes into force from January 1, will be the topic of discussion when Kerry referees will be coached on its implementation at two different venues in the county next week. On Tuesday 13th the venue is Fossa GAA Club for East Kerry, South Kerry, Mid Kerry and Kenmare while the following evening the venue is Kerins O’Rahillys clubhouse for referees in North Kerry, West Kerry, Tralee and Castleisland. Starting time is 8pm at both venues and all referees are obliged to attend. Kieran Donaghy, winner of the eir Sport Sports Book of The Year Award. PICTURE: MORGAN TREACY, INPHO

UPGRADES AT CELTIC PARK Michael Doherty and Patrick Roarty’s U11s were the first Celtic players to get a taste of the brand new artificial surface on their floodlit training area when Mark Coyne of Coynes Tyre Sales on the Ross Rd. presented the squad with two brand new sets of jerseys. “I just think the club does great work in the community,” explains Mark, “And I’d like to try and help out in a small way where I can.” It’s not a small way, as Michael and Patrick or any of their young and enthusiastic players can attest!” The training area has now been completely resurfaced with fine gravel overlaid with the highest grade of artificial grass available to the UEFA. Mary Lyne has been involved with the project right from its inception. “The old training area has served us brilliantly for twelve years,” she explains, “But it was becoming very worn in places and honestly we didn’t feel that it was properly safe anymore. It had simply run its course. We spoke to Nick Ferrell and Sean Kelly of Sports grounds Development and they couldn’t have been more helpful all through.” “It’s a big investment for any volunteer club – the whole project cost E77,000 in total, but we have always been lucky in the great local support from people and businesses around Killarney, people like Mark, and they came through for us again. We also got simply fantastic help from Suzanne Gallagher of Clann Credo, a business-supported charitable organisation that helps local charities and community organisations to develop social investment. They gave us a low interest five year loan that made all the difference, and the FAI have given us great help and grant support that made this project affordable.” The club’s U7s and U8s will be the first groups to have training sessions on the brand new ground this Saturday, and people in general will get their first look at it at our senior team’s FAI Junior Cup match against Mervue United of Galway. It’s a huge game for the club, a chance to get into the top 32 teams in the country, so we are hoping to have big support on the night.” RESULTS FAI Junior Cup: Killarney Celtic 1 Mervue United 0 A cold night felt very hot by the final whistle! Both sides had chances but couldn’t finish them in a very fast and exciting match. In the 79th minute Brendan Falvey burst out of defence and played it to Matt Keane. Another precision radar pass by Matt, one of many, picked out Peter McCarthy, who

cleverly turned the defender with a bit of skillful misdirection and sent in a dangerous cross, causing a panicked defender to handle it. The referee (who had a good game overall in a tight and tense affair) made Gary take it twice....but this is Gary we are talking about, so he just scored it twice, even if it only counted once! Once was enough as Celtic’s concentration never wavered after that. Team: Brian Kelly, Chris O’Leary, Brendan Falvey, Jamie Spillane, John McDonough, Wayne Sparling, Stephen Hayes, Matt Keane, Pa McGrath, Gary Keane, Cathal O’Shea. Subs Peter McCarthy, Stephen McCarthy, Conall Murphy. Man of the match? Arrah, pick any name from the above list, and you won’t be far wrong... A special mention to the magnificent support, you all made a real difference. Denny Premier B: Killarney Celtic B 3 Mastergeeha 2 The B team are hitting a great vein of form now and pulled off a great win against Mastergeeha. Conor McCarthy and Aaron Cahill had scored to keep it at 2-2 and Vladimir Sirotiak hit a spectacular winner. U17 League: Killarney Celtic 2 Castleisland 1 A fantastic game with very little between the sides, but Celtic managed to come out on top in the finish. U15 Premier: Dingle Bay Rovers 1 Killarney Celtic 4 Superb stuff by Celtic. Terry Sparling was on the mark twice, with Niall McGillicuddy and Emmett Finnan also finding the net. U15 Div Two: Killarney Celtic B 5 Park C A hat trick from Cian Doe and one each from Oisin Walsh and Erin Moloney gave Celtic B the win in 15 Division 2 to move them up to 4th place. The lads lost out in this mid table battle having put in a fine first half performance but again failing to score the chances they created. They should have taken the

The Tralee side started on top in the 2nd half and scored 2 quick fire goals in the opening 10 mins to take control. Mastergeeha responded well with Philip O’Leary going close but as they pushed on Park B scored again to seal the win. U17 Mastergeeha 2 Listowel 2. Killarney Cycling Club

At our annual party and prize giving on Friday evening in the Dromhall hotel our outgoing club chairman Noel Doherty spoke of the success of the club over the past year and he had a lot of great achievements to speak about. But personally I saw our greatest success illustrated by the number of young people who came along with their parents and families. We are truly fortunate to have a really dedicated group of parents, coaches and mentors who are driving forward with an ambitious underage program and the results were easily seen at the party in terms of numbers of fit, enthusiastic and well mannered young people. Noel spoke eloquently of the competitive year we had across all age groups and in all disciplines on and off road. The list of wins and achievements was very long and impressive but a club like ours doesn’t just rate itself on wins. We value participation, camaraderie and just pure fun and friendship just as highly and maybe that is why we are by the accounts of all of the members a great club to be a part of. Every year the committee try to pick a “Club person of the year” and a “Junior Club person of the year”. This year as in any other it was a difficult task to pick these people out of the large number who give so selflessly of their

Leigh Hewerdine took the accolade and the prize for Club man of the year for this unflinching and dedicated work in all areas of the club. We as a club Say “thank you Leigh”. We also say thank you to Veronica for her constant help and support. Our Junior clubperson of the year prize went to Milo Donaldson for showing dedication to training an tenacity in his approach to his mountain biking. MINIS Our minis continue to train at Aghadoe every Saturday morning between 10:30am and 12 midday. Given last Friday night’s Late Late Toy show was on tv and children usually stay up later than normal, the kids turned up absolutely full of energy and had a great session at all ages. The minis intend to hold a raffle for a Christmas Hamper on the day of our Minis Christmas Party, with funds raised going towards the purchase of a defibrillator for the club. So please support the kids as they sell the lines. The Minis Christmas party will take place at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Sunday the 18th of December, from 1pm and all the minis are invited to come along and bring their siblings and families to what is usually a fantastic day of fun, with Santa and his Chief Elf popping along to say hi and dish out some goodies! Completed raffle sheets must be returned to your coach by Sat 17th. Details: Liam Murphy 087-4145662. YOUTHS U14’s: Killarney U14’s completed their 2016 campaign with a resounding away win at Listowel on Saturday 3rd. After several weeks of indoor training at the SBGK gym under the guidance of PJ Lucey, the team was eager to get into match mode. A commanding opening half performance saw powerful forwards Thomas Clifford and Brendan O Donoghue (twice) crash through for tries. Liam Walsh playing 1st centre who travels from Kenmare scored his first two tries for the club cutting incisively through the home defence. Out-half Donnchadh Grealy converted three of the first half tries. Captain and number 8 dynamo Padraig Talbot scored immediately after the restart and the controlled aggression of Bailey O’Sullivan was rewarded shortly after with a brilliant try directly from a restart. Listowel gallantly rallied and put intense pressure on the Killarney line for a sustained period. However the defence refused to buckle, regrouped and talented centre Liam Randles scored 2 fantastic tries, one from a penalty set play and the 2nd following an individual kick and chase. Donnchadh Grealy converted 2 of the second half tries. As well as the barn storming try scorers the forwards were complimented ably by Adam Cronin, Sean O’Sullivan, Darren Cronin,

Ruairi Coughlan, Shane McAllister and Sam Behall. The ever-changing back line sparkled with Peter Walsh, Sean Hickey, Josh Campbell, James Kennelly, Rian Colleran, Harry Kelly, Mikey Moriarty and Colin O’Sullivan all contributing to a fluid expansive display. Killarney stand on top of the South Munster Table for the Christmas period with 6 wins from 6 games. Outdoor training will resume shortly with the switching on of flood lighting in Aghadoe. New recruits are welcome to bolster our squad for 2017. U16’s: Killarney U 16s hosted Killorglin in Aghadoe, in round five of the U16 preliminary league. Killarney started brightly, and dominated upfront, at both set piece and at the breakdown. However with only fourteen players to start with and therefore no replacements, this was always going to be a tough fixture. As the game progressed it became apparent that it was only a question of time before the floodgates opened. Ultimately Killorglin’s defence was too tight and Killarney’s poorer handling that decided the final score. Training next week to be advised. SENIORS Our seniors made a second trip to Fermoy last Sunday in the matter of a few weeks, to take on the home side, this time in the latest round of the Munster Junior League. Killarney travelled determined to build upon the 25-15 victory in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup and to build on from the win over Chorca Dhuibhne the previous Sunday at Aghadoe. A fantastic game ensued, with Paul O’Sullivan crossing the line twice for the visitors and Mike Sheahan converting one as well as scoring a conversion to help the men in Black and Red win on a scoreline of 15 points to 12. Well done To Ger Moynihan and his men.

The traditional “Drive in” for the Club President, Breda Duggan, Lady Captain Amy Arthur, Club Captain Declan McCarthy, Girls Captain Eva Burke, and Youths Captain Darren Mulcahy took place on the morning of Sunday last the 4th of December. The weather was benign, and in total contrast to the same event of last year, when all of those participating were virtually blown “off course” by hurricane Clodagh. The “drive-in” was followed by the Billy and Lucy O’Callaghan sponsored mixed foursomes competition, and it was played on the “original” course, which was especially chosen by the Club Captain. Declan and Lady Captain Amy for the event. Over 120 participated in this

competition, which is always one of the highlights of our calendar year. The competition was won by Barry Duggan and his partner Grace Dennehy, with a very creditable score of 38 points. Barry is married to our Club President, Breda and on this occasion, a domestic decision must have been made to split up their partnership, and that way to double the chances of bringing home one of Billy and Lucy’s most sought after Hampers. The “Apres Match” get together and presentation of the prizes was, as usual, a most enjoyable affair, and Barry Duggan, in his winners prize acceptance speech, was his usual most witty self, and nobody was spared in his remarks, not even Club President Breda herself. Kind remarks were also passed about the “Old course” which was prepared by Course Manager Enda Murphy and his Staff, and about the specially commissioned score cards, which were organised by Victor Mulcahy, and printed By Barry Murphy of Murphy Print. The Men’s Club had some competition prize presentations outstanding,

and Captain Declan made those presentations as Follows, The Heineken sponsored competition, won by Jason Arthur, the Scratch Matchplay competition sponsored by Donal Considine’s Golf Shop, and won by Simon Gallivan, and The Club Four-ball Competition sponsored by Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurances, won by Ian Prendergast and Euan McIndoe. Then on a sad note, Club Captain Declan McCarthy, on behalf of the entire Club passed on our sincere condolences to former Club Captain Pat Favier and family on the death of his wife Dympna who had only just passed away on the day before. Santa Claus is coming to our Club. Don’t forget that Santa will arrive to meet all of the little girls and boys of our Club members on Saturday next, the 10th of December at 2.00 P.M. Santa will be with us until 4.00 P.M. when he will be off to meet other little girls and boys on another one of his pre-Christmas tours.

Squash Club update by Andrew Garnett THE penultimate squash competition of 2016 was unique in that it was held on a Friday night with Majic and Farook Kahn leading their teams through the group stages to reach this month’s final. Liam Shine took on Don Ring in the next game, Don needed to win this to ensure Farook

At the presentation of prizes of the Gleneagle Squash Club sponsored by Christy Quill, Strand House, Dingle, were seated from left, Ger Foley,Marta Przyborski, Farook Khan, captain of winning team, Bernice Enright and Mike Crowley, Chairman. Second row from left are Oskar Przyborski, Connie Doyle, Mike O'Donoghue, Jamie Lawlor, Ryan Kavanagh and Adrian McCarthy. Back from left are Ivor Barton, Donagh Crowley, Matt O'Connor and Tim Lynch. didn’t walk away with the spoils.

Dr Crokes

O’DONOGHUE CUP FINAL Rathmore 2-12 Dr Crokes 0-13 In a game in which we played second fiddle to Rathmore from the 25th minute on we went down in the end by five points, 2-12 to 0-13. For the first twenty four minutes of this game we were well on top and led 0-7 to 0-3. From the 25th minute to the 37th minute. There were seven minutes extra time played in this half. Rathmore won this game. During that period they outscored us 1-5 to 0-1 and went in 1-8 to 0-8 in front. Scores were hard to come by in the third quarter with each side scoring just two points. Our opponents put the game practically out of reach in the 47th minute when they converted a penalty and went into a six point lead. We pulled back the lead to five points with a Jordan Kiely point in the 18th minute. We were however never going to get any nearer as Rathmore played strongly at the back. They had two points in the 50th and 60th minute to increase their lead. We had two points in injury time to reduce the deficit to five points. This left Rathmore worthy winners on a score of 2-12 to 0-13. Our management know that there is a lot of work to be done in the next ten weeks when we play Corofin. Hopefully when the team has been freshened up we will be ready for this tough encounter. Mid Kerry GAA

MID KERRY MINOR FINAL Laune Rangers 0-9, Beaufort 1-13 Beaufort bridged a 13 year gap and were crowned Mid Kerry Minor Champions for 2016 with a blistering second half display. Laune Rangers gave it all but came up short for the 2nd year running. Beaufort started very well and scored in the opening minute with an Aaron Foley point. Mike Breen followed it up with another before Laune Rangers settled and pointed a free through Patrick Daly. Rangers went on to put pressure on Beaufort and dominated possession through the remainder of the opening quarter, with points from Patrick Daly (2 frees), Fiachra Clifford (free), and Cian O’Shea

mpbell and Zeki Fryers.

giving the Killorglin side the lead with Mike Breen pointing the sole response from Beaufort. Fiachra Clifford also had a shot saved excellently from Beaufort goalkeeper David O’Shea to see Rangers lead by 0-05 to 0-03 with 18 minutes played. The second quarter belonged to Beaufort with one player in particular grabbing the headlines. After Paudie Coffey had pointed excellently from an acute angle for Beaufort, Ciarán Kennedy went on to slot two 45s either side of a Fiachra Clifford free for Rangers to level the scores. Patrick Daly (free) and Aaron Foley exchanged points to maintain the stalemate before Beaufort were awarded a penalty for a pick off the ground by a Laune Rangers defender. Ciarán Kennedy stepped up but the penalty was saved excellently by Padraig Ahern at full stretch to turn the ball around the post. Kennedy immediately shrugged off the disappointment of the penalty miss to score the 45 – his 3rd of the half. That score was enough to give Beaufort the lead by the minimum at the break. Half time Score Laune Rangers 0-07 Beaufort 0-08. Beaufort were much the better side in the second half. Aaron Foley and Ciarán Kennedy both pointed to put three between the sides, while a Neil O’Brien point for Rangers was quickly cancelled out by Joe Glinwood to leave Beaufort leading by 0-11 to 0-08 with a quarter to play. Beaufort missed a number of kickable frees to leave Rangers within reach, but the Killorglin side also missed a number of scorable chances when scores were needed. Paudie Coffey had a shot at goal saved excellently by Paudie Ahern before Beaufort finally scored what was a winning goal in the 56th minute – Dylan O’Sullivan finishing well past Ahern to find the net. This deflated Rangers and Beaufort were able to close out the game, as Paudie Coffey and Patrick Daly traded points before captain Mike Breen scored the final point of the game. Final score:- Laune Rangers 0-09, Beaufort 1-13. The result gave Beaufort their first Mid Kerry Minor title in thirteen years, when Damien Breen lifted the

Derry O’Sullivan Memorial trophy. AQUILA CLUB O’DONOGHUE CUP FINAL Rathmore 2-12 Dr Crokes 0-13 In a strongly contested game, played last Sunday in Fitzgerald Stadium, Rathmore won 3 in a row Aquila Club O’ Donoghue Cup East Kerry SFC title, against Dr Crokes. Although Dr Crokes were first on the scoreboard, and led to the 25th minute, it Rathmore led at the break, a John Moynihan goal in the 25th minute being the difference between the sides. Dr Crokes opened the scoring with 3 unanswered points in as many minutes. Rathmore reduced the gap to the minimum by the 10th minute. Dr Crokes increased their lead to 4 points by the 21st minutes with 2 pointed frees and a point from play. Rathmore levelled the game with a goal and a point in the 25th minute. The goal came after a fast upfield move, with Eoin Lawlor making a penetrating solo and precision pass to John Moynihan, who rifled a shot to the back of the Dr Crokes net,

giving the goal keeper no chance. A point from play within 30 seconds had the teams level 1-4 to 0-7. The sides traded points but then Rathmore finished the half the stronger, notching up 3 points without reply to go in at the break leading 1-8 to 0-8. On resumption the game continued a pace and there were a scatter of points. The turning point came with a Rathmore penalty, ably slotted to the back of the net by Mark Reen on the 50th minute 2-10 to 0-10. In an exciting end to the game, Rathmore notched up 2 points to 3 for Dr Crokes, who pressed forward repeatedly. However, Rathmore defended strongly and prevented a Dr Crokes goal.
