How can we help the homeless? AS THE Apollo House occupiers made their stand, providing accommodation to those who need shelter over the festive season, many in Killarney have voiced grave concern about people sleeping rough in our locality. Among the situations highlighted was that of a young man who had been sleeping in a tent in Killarney National Park. In addition, several people have been spotted sleeping in doorways on the streets of the town. “I saw woman in her early 20s sleeping in a doorway on New Street recently,” Cllr Donal Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “I tried to help her and see if she needed help finding a hostel. She was a well-spoken young lady but didn’t want to engage with any services. “In addition, a man has been sleeping in a tent in Killarney National Park who I have been trying to help source accommodation. Another lady with four young children is also awaiting accommodation. She is living in a glorified shed.” Meanwhile, a homeless centre is to open in Killarney in 2018 in the former Armagh House on Park Road. Operated by the Cluid organisation, with the support of Kerry County Council and the Department of the Environment, it will be the first homeless shelter in the town. “The plan is to demolish this property and provide a purpose-built facility for homeless people,” said Cllr Grady, who has campaigned for the shelter. Killarney man Billy Doyle this week suggested that rooms in the Aras Phádraig, donated to the town by the Franciscan Friars, be made available to help solve the crux. Kerry County Council stated it does not have anyone registered as homeless in Killarney “insofar as there is nobody sleeping rough or without shelter who has not been offered emergency accommodation”. “At this moment in time we have two families and two individuals in emergency accommodation in Killarney,” it stated. “It is our intention not to have any family unit in emergency accommodation over the Christmas period. In that respect, we have identified and prepared a number of transitional properties across the county which will be offered to these family units for a number of weeks until more permanent solutions to their accommodation needs are identified.” In the Killarney Municipal District area, there are currently 1,283 households on the council's housing waiting list. The Kerry Homeless Information Centre in Tralee can be contacted on 066-7117633.

Rathmore pub offers food to the homeless over Christmas THE season of goodwill started early in Rathmore as Connie K’s bar hit the headlines nationally when it offered to provide all those in need with a free Christmas meal. The big-hearted team at the bar have shown huge compassion to people who are struggling financially and will offer lunches in the bar between December 23 and December 25, in strict confidence. The bar’s landlord Jeff Gordon decided to make the gesture after meeting a woman who was in despair over a bill she was struggling to pay off. “Struggles are very often a lot closer to home than we realise,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “The Christmas dinners can also be delivered or we can meet people at an arranged location in order to keep confidentiality. All I need is their requirements and their postcode; we do the rest." Those wishing to avail of help can contact the bar on 087-9534944.

Dawn walk honours Nathan’s memory ORGANISERS of Nathan’s Walk, including Nathan’s parents Marie and Denis O’Carroll, gathered at St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday for a special Mass in Nathan’s memory. Before the ceremony, they presented €38,000, the proceeds of Nathan’s Walk in 2016, to Marie Peelo and Joan Freeman of Pieta House. “Nathan’s Walk was one of five walks in Kerry this year,” Marie O’Carroll told Killarney Advertiser. “We would like to thank all who took part in the walk and all the sponsors and hope to see them again in 2017. We also thank Fr Kieran O’Brien and the large attendance at the Mass on Friday.”

GARDAÍ in Killarney are investigating a burglary in the Fáilte Hotel that took place in the early hours of Monday morning. Thieves raided the storeroom and office, making off with a large amount of alcohol and some cash. The raiders struck between 1am and 7am on Monday morning, according to a Garda spokesperson. Gardaí are keen to hear from anyone who may have spotted anything suspicious in the Clovers Lane, College Street and Glebe car park areas during those hours. “We believe the culprits took scaffolding from the nearby building site for the new Vodafone store which they used in the raid,” said a Garda spokesperson. “A large amount of spirits was taken in the robbery.” It is believed a vehicle is likely to have been used to transport the stolen alcohol from the scene. “If anyone comes across this alcohol for sale, it will be apparent from the labels, which will be upside down as the spirits were for use as optics,” added the spokesperson. If you can help in the investigation, contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222.

Question I have ordered a few presents from a Belgian website. Can I return them if I’m not happy with them when they arrive? Answer Online purchases within the EU are covered by the EU Directive on Consumer Rights. Under this Directive you are entitled to a cooling-off period of 14 days. During the cooling-off period, you can cancel distance contracts such as online purchases without giving a reason and without incurring charges or penalties, other than possible charges incurred in returning the goods. The 14-day cooling-off period begins on the day that you receive the goods. Upon cancellation, the distance seller is obliged to repay you within 14 days, including delivery costs. If you chose a more expensive type of delivery than the seller’s cheapest standard delivery, you are only entitled to be refunded the cost of the cheaper delivery type. The seller can withhold the repayment until the goods are returned or until you supply evidence that you have sent the goods back. You must send the goods back within 14 days of informing the seller of the cancellation. You have to pay for the cost of returning them, unless the seller did not inform you before you ordered the goods that you would have to bear the cost. The seller should have provided you with confirmation of the contract, as well as information on aftersales and guarantees, how to cancel the contract and a postal address for complaints. If the seller did not provide you with information on your right to cancel, the cooling-off period can be extended by 12 months. Cancellation may not be accepted in certain cases, for example, if the goods were made especially for you. Further information is available from the European Consumer Centre and the Citizens Information Centre below.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house Everyone was freezing even the mouse The stockings were hung by the chimney with care In hopes that a Cremur Stove would soon be there The children were perished and froze to the bed While dreams of a wood burner entered their head And dad in his coat and mum in her cap Had just settled in for a perishing nap Then out of the lawn arose such a bang I looked out the window and saw a Cremur Stoves Van The driver was huge and he wore a red suit And the passenger he had only one tooth

They entered the house with a box on their back With all of their tools in a big red bag They finished their work as quick as a flash And left through the door with a bag of small trash We jumped out of bed and down the big stairs We went through the kitchen and around the chairs We went into the next room over by the alcove There perched on its throne sat a Cremur Stove. It was crackling and glowing as I sat on my seat It had natural convection as well as radiant heat The house was warm for the first time in years I was so happy I almost shed tears My Cremur Stove burns coal and wood I stand back in awe like anyone should.

SO WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE WORKING ON CHRISTMAS DAY?

Santa Claus and Caroline Papin welcoming guests to The Gleneagle Hotel. PICTURE: NERIJUS KARMILKOVAS

Eve Kelliher hears from unsung heroes in our community who routinely work or are on call on December 25

S

INCE she started work as guest relations manager at The Gleneagle Hotel a decade ago, Caroline Papin has worked 10 Christmas Days – and she wouldn’t have it any other way. Most of the guests staying in the hotel over the festive season arrive on December 23. “We get many return visitors every year, and I love to help to make Christmas special for a huge variety of people, of all ages, during Christmas,” said Caroline. The fact that Christmas can be a bittersweet time is not lost on the guest relations manager. “I have heard some very sad stories,” said Caroline. “Some people staying with us have families living abroad, for instance. One lady was so sad I gave her a big hug and she told me it made her Christmas Day, she said that was all she wanted as she felt she had no one to give her a hug.” Caroline has huge empathy when it comes to spotting just who needs some TLC when it comes to adding sparkle to the festive season. “I have learned to read the situation from the moment guests walk in the door,” she said. “For instance, sometimes you have individuals who want to get away, hide or escape for the festive season – they are seeking a haven. I have also seen seen people, elderly people, being left at the front door. What is important to me is making everyone feel welcome and completely at home.” On December 24, some guests might need to go on shopping trips or to Mass so they can go into town on the hotel shuttle bus and Caroline also organises walks for guests, as well as officiating at a special reception in the Mangerton Suite, during which The Gleneagle Concert Band performs. Finally, on Christmas morning, Caroline checks who would like one last photo with the man of the moment before he heads back to the North Pole, and then it’s on to ensuring everyone enjoys their turkey and ham.

A demanding but Teamwork rewarding job ensures wonderful atmosphere in hospital A FIRE-FIGHTER with Killarney Fire Service, Martin O’Grady is well used to being on call for Christmas Day. As a fire officer, he carries a pager in the event of an incident. “Callouts can range from chimney fires to house fires to road accidents or flooding – absolutely anything,” said Martin. A member of Killarney Fire Service for eight years, he added: “I suppose it can be hard being on call, Fire-fighter Martin O’Grady. but it is a very rewarding job.” Martin has a few words of advice about fire safety this festive season. “Be careful when it comes to Christmas lights and candles, and always check smoke alarms,” he said. “Make sure you use a fireguard in front of the fire and of course never forget to call on people living alone.”

‘A credit to the force’ MEMBERS of An Garda Siochána are also among those who work throughout the festive season. And Killarney Gardaí received an early Christmas present in the form of a letter of heartfelt appreciation from a local householder. The writer thanked Killarney Superintendent Flor Murphy for the help and reassurance she and her husband received from officers after her husband, who is unable to stand, fell on the bedroom floor. “In desperation I rang the garda station,” said the lady. “Three Gardaí came to assist us. I could not praise these men enough – they were courteous, respectful and kind. As well I would like to commend the Garda who answered my phone call for his calm re-assurance. They are a credit to the force.”

MARGARET HOULIHAN’S family have asked Santa Claus if he could drop off their presents a day early so that they can celebrate on the morning of Christmas Eve instead. A busy nurse working in the accident and emergency department at University Hospital Kerry, Margaret will be leaving the house at 6.45am on Christmas morning and will not return home until 9.30pm. Margaret, who is married with three small children, said A&E can be unpredictable on Christmas Day. “Among the presentations we tend to expect are car accidents,” she said. Men falling off ladders doing last-minute decorations, or elderly people suffering falls from perhaps being disorientated when staying in unfamiliar surroundings, and those needing pain management are among the patients that are typically seen in A&E on Christmas Day. There are also, of course, youngsters who have had accidents with new bikes, or rollerblades, when parents are momentarily distracted. “We have a special red phone in A&E so we can

ring Santa in emergencies to let him know the children are in hospital and we can tell him how good they have been,” said Margaret. “Children are also very well looked after with lots of presents in the children’s ward.” She added: “The atmosphere is wonderful on Christmas Day and the team all work together. The hospital’s kitchen staff prepare a lovely Christmas dinner for staff and we do a Secret Santa. Everyone makes a huge effort to make it as enjoyable as it can be.”

Eagers ‘cash in’ on the High Street CHRISTMAS shoppers in Killarney have been assured that there will be no shortage of cash on High Street this festive season. For too long, locals and visitors alike looking for an ATM in this area have had to trek to the other side of town, but now thanks to Eagers Newsagents they will have one right on their doorstep. The 24-hour cashpoint was officially opened during the past week and is located to the front of the family-owned newsagents and toyshop. Shop owner Pat Duggan hopes it will prove a winner not only with his own customers but also with those who regularly socialise in High Street’s vibrant restaurants, cafés and bars. “This is the only cashpoint on High Street and it was very much needed,” said Pat. “People are constantly popping to ask us where the nearest ATM machine is and they are always shocked when they hear it is at the other end of town.” He added: “For a busy tourist town there just aren’t enough ATMs, particularly on this side of town and there are always big queues, especially at weekends and at busy times like the run-up to Christmas.” Eagers newsagents has been a feature of life on High Street for generations and Pat hopes the addition of this much-needed service will encourage shoppers to explore more of what the area has to offer. “Hopefully the new cashpoint will make Christmas shopping a little bit easier for people in Killarney, and we know it will be a great resource coming into 2017 as well,” he said.

Healy-Rae brothers say ‘bottoms-up’ to office chair racing IT’S back and already business people and politicians are in training for Tralee’s third Annual Christmas Office Chair Racing Competition in aid of St Vincent de Paul. Following on from the success of the event over the past two years, the racing will return to Neil Armstrong Way, outside Siamsa Tíre Theatre, from 1pm this Friday, December 23. Kerry TDs Danny and Michael Healy-Rae, John Brassil and Martin Ferris have already signedup to take part in the event and while Deputy Brendan Griffin will not be present, he will donate €50 to St Vincent de Paul. Anyone interested in taking part or sponsoring a chair can do so for only €50 and all proceeds will go to St Vincent de Paul.

The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “St Vincent de Paul continues to be inundated with requests for help from people in our community, not just at Christmas, but all year round and the money raised from this event will help us to help them. This is a fun event to head into the Christmas holidays and wind-down after a busy year.” The rules are simple: All the chairs (which will be supplied) have wheels and in order to win a race, the competitors must keep their bottoms firmly on the seat of the chair and only use their legs to propel themselves forward towards the finish line. Entries will be accepted up to 12pm of the day of the Office Chair Racing; just send the name of your Office Chair Racer to John Drummey (on behalf of Tralee Chamber Alliance) at info@ JohnDrummey.ie or Junior Locke, President of the Tralee Society of St Vincent de Paul, at SVPTraleeArea@gmail.com or contact Junior Locke on 087-9667442.

Magic in the air in Muckross for Christmas “THERE’S more to Muckross than the summer months” – was the message from the elves behind the hugely successful festive extravaganza Muckross Christmas Magic. Many happy youngsters – and the young at heart – enjoyed a truly enchanting winter journey at Muckross this Christmas. Santa Claus landed his sleigh at Muckross Traditional Farms in Killarney National Park at the end of November and took up residence there for the festive season, meeting and greeting his many young friends. "We are delighted with the success of Muckross Christmas Magic, which sold out two years in a row,” said Toddy Doyle of Muckross Traditional Farms. “It’s a great tribute to the staff and to all the hard work and effort involved. At Muckross Christmas Magic we were delighted to welcome all our visitors. There’s more to Muckross than just the summer months!” And of course, Santa’s young pals also availed of the chance to send their letters to the man in red at the Christmas Post Office, before their meeting with the man himself.

Festival organisers get on their bikes NOW in its fourth year, the Killarney Cycling Festival returns on August 26, 2017, confirmed organisers as they presented the proceeds of the 2016 event to the Donal Walsh LiveLife Foundation. Some €1186 was raised by last year’s festival, which incorporates the Wrong Way Round cycle. “Killarney Cycling Festival is now well established in the calendar of events for cyclists the length and breadth of the country and offering two truly rewarding cycles, it brings the cycling season to a close,” said organiser Maureen Cournane, marketing department, The Gleneagle Hotel. “A twist on the traditional Ring of Kerry, The Wong Way Round has a few surprises up its sleeve or you can challenge yourself on the scenic Hard Way Round that circles the spectacular Skellig Ring, taking in some of the most spectacular vistas on the planet!” The route, which is 180km long, diverges from the Wrong Way Round by taking a right

‘Teamwork is key to our success in Killarney’ Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce’s outgoing president Kate O’Leary reviews the past 12 months

A

S WE come to the end of 2016 I would like to extend best wishes to everybody in Killarney and I hope you all enjoy a happy and peaceful Christmas It has been a wonderful year. We have seen the opening of Killarney House Gardens. It is such pleasure to walk through the estate watching the flowers and the cherry blossoms grow. It's great to have such a marvellous facility 20m from the town centre – an oasis of calm in our bustling, thriving town. It has been a great year for tourism, with every business reporting an upturn in revenue. There have been many accolades bestowed on our hotels and our town in 2016. The success of our Tidy Towns team brought us another gold medal and hopefully we will see the national award coming back to Killarney next year.

There have been great festivals and events throughout the year, from the Saint Patrick's festival to the July 4 celebrations and Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle as well as football games, adventure races, triathlons and marathons, walking festivals and music festivals. There is no end to the activities in Killarney and Christmas in Killarney is the perfect way to wrap up a great year. I would like to thank all the people that I have worked with over the last two years as Chamber president. We have a great bunch of people in our chamber network and beyond. It is the ability to work harmoniously with different agencies that is the key to our success here in Killarney

Season’s greetings from Killarney’s first citizen Let’s build on our tremendous community spirit, says Mayor and Cathaoirleach Brendan Cronin

A

S MAYOR and Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, I want to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and peaceful Christmas and good health and prosperity for 2017. I want to assure you that my fellow councillors and I will continue working, to the best of our ability, for the public in the Killarney Municipal District. We will continue to build on the tremendous community spirit that exists in our area for the benefit of all. We the elected members will continue to support the initiatives, communities and volunteers that have achieved great success at local, national and international level and at every opportunity promote the Killarney Municipal District and all that it has to offer. It is also very important at this time to remember and help in any way possible organisations that assist those less fortunate than ourselves. May you all have a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Rescue team urges climbers to take care on the mountains THE past year has been busy one for Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT). The team has dealt with some very serious incidents in 2016. Poor weather conditions have been a feature in a number these callouts. While KMRT encourages people to enjoy the mountains over the holiday period, the team issued a warning to remember they can be treacherous places without proper care and preparation. “While there's no substitute for experience, there are steps you can take to reduce the chances of getting lost or hurt,” said Alan Wallace, PRO. Preparation is key, he said. “Develop the skills you need to judge hazards, including the ability to read a map. Consider the equipment, experience, capabilities and enthusiasm of your group, taking into account the time of year and the terrain - and choose your routes accordingly,” said Alan. “Wear footwear with a treaded sole and ankle support. Clothing should be colourful, warm, windproof and waterproof, including hat and gloves.” Bring plenty of food and drink, high-energy food such as chocolate and dried fruit, add KMRT. “In cold, wet weather a warm drink is advisable, and always carry water and the right equipment,” said Alan.

A map and compass are essential. “A mobile phone and GPS are useful tools but don't rely on your mobile – in many areas of the mountains there is no coverage. Bring a first aid kit, bivvy bag, whistle and a torch (plus spare batteries and bulbs),” said the KMRT spokesman. “Climbers should wear a helmet and in winter conditions, an ice-axe, crampons and survival bag are essential.” Before setting out, check the weather forecast and local conditions. “Mountains can be major undertakings and, in the winter months, night falls early,” said Alan. Leave your route plan including start and finish points, estimated time of return and contact details with an appropriate person.” Be prepared to turn back if weather conditions deteriorate. “Keep together, allow the slowest member of the party to determine the pace,” said Alan. Watch for signs of hypothermia – disorientation, shivering, tiredness, pale complexion and loss of circulation in hands or toes, discarding of vital clothing. If you think you need mountain rescue you can contact Kerry Mountain Rescue Team by calling 112 or 999 and asking for mountain rescue. Remember to keep injured or exhausted people safe and warm until help reaches you.

‘Direct train route between Dublin and Tralee must be maintained’ KERRY people have been urged to help ensure the direct train service between Tralee and Dublin is maintained. The issue of the rail route was raised in the Seanad this week by leas-cathaoirleach and Fine Gael Kerry senator Paul Coghlan. Senator Coghlan is encouraging local people to make a submission on the issue in order to ensure the service is maintained. Anyone with an interest in protecting this direct train route is urged to make a submission before the January 18 deadline at www.nationaltransport.ie. “The 2016 Rail Review recommends dropping the direct Dublin to Tralee train, which would be a severe retrograde step and would have nothing but a negative impact on Kerry,” he said. “I was very concerned to read the recommendation of the Rail Review that every train out of Kerry change at Mallow, thus dropping the direct Kerry Dublin route. As someone who uses this service on a regular basis, I can absolutely testify to its importance and its necessity to the people of Kerry. Senator Coghlan added: “Kerry is a national tourist destination. The length of the summer tourist season is increasing each year and naturally enough, so is the number of train passengers. By cutting the direct train link from Dublin to Tralee, Irish Rail will be adversely affecting the tourism potential of the county. “I am pleased that Kerry County Council will be making a submission against this proposal during the public consultation period and I would strongly state that Kerry does not deserve to be disadvantaged in the manner proposed. I urge everyone with an interest in protecting this direct train route from TraleeDublin, to make a submission before the January 18 deadline at www.nationaltransport.ie.”

Green Christmas at Killarney National Park Education Centre SANTA CLAUS arrived at Knockreer House to help the children of Firies National School raise Killarney National Park Education Centre’s second Eco- Centre Green Flag. Killarney National Park Education Centre has become the only outdoor education centre in the country to be awarded a second Green Flag in the "Eco-Centres Award Scheme” run by An Taisce. “The scheme is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term action for the environment within centres of learning,” said Chris Barron, manager, Killarney National Education Centre. The aim of Eco-Centres Scheme is to increase awareness of environmental issues through classroom and "in-the-field" activities and to transfer this knowledge into positive environmental action in the centre and in the wider community. Centres that have successfully completed all the elements of the programme are awarded the "Green Flag". “The Green Flag award has now become well-recognized and many schools around the country take part in the programme. (Find out more from www.greenschoolsireland.org),” said Chris. For details of all courses being run at the centre, (including After School Nature Club beginning in January), telephone 064-6635960 or email knpeducationcentre@ahg. gov.ie

Moments in Time

PICTURE SUPPLIED BY MOMENTS IN TIME The changing face of what is now The Laurels Bar and Restaurant, down the years.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Let’s make Áras Phádraig rooms available to homeless people IT WAS with sadness that I saw a young man sleeping rough in a shop doorway in our town in the past fortnight. It has since come to my attention that another person is sleeping rough in an open shed in the National Park. I am now calling on the town manager and local politicians to make available and utilise rooms at the rear of the Áras Phádraig, as these rooms are fit for purpose. The Franciscan Friars bequeathed the Áras Phádraig to the people of Killarney and I imagine in the spirit of St Francis of Assisi the Friars would be delighted with this gesture. Billy Doyle, 31 Woodlawn Park, Killarney

Bell ringing in the park By Nicky Barry It never ceases to amaze me when riding on my bike, Around Killarney National Park, which truly is a sight. It’s wonderful in every way, with mountains, lakes, and isles, And with lots of folk out walking, and that’s where the problem lies. I like to ring my bell, just to let them know I’m coming, And generally they step aside; they know that danger’s lurking, Unless they’re wearing head-phones, and they don’t hear a thing, They’re oblivious to danger, no matter how I ring. Single folk who aren’t wired up, kindly step aside, And if there are two of them, they break to either side.

If there’s three of them, they look around, and then just keep on walking, Suggesting they have right of way, and then continue talking. If there’s four or five, it’s a numbers game, a solid wall before me, Even if one turns around, the rest all just ignore me, Continentals are so obliging; they scatter when I ring, And then profusely thank me for my courteous ding-ding. Young bucks are inclined to say, there’s more of us than you, You can ring for all you want, boy, you’re just not getting through. They interpret ding-ding as - Hey get out of my way, While gentle old folks thank me, wave me on, and say good day.

Road safety is a priority AT A recent Killarney Municipal Area meeting I asked that the council would undertake the work necessary to ensure reasonable safety for road users at the junction of L 7047 and the L 3011 Upper Lissivigeen-Coolcoslough road, as the present situation is extremely dangerous and a source of concern to all. The council replied that the road design office produced a proposal for this junction some years ago

but the council was unable to put the plan into effect. Following on a recent meeting with the residents group and this motion the council said that it would re-examine the location for alternative solutions. This junction is extremely dangerous for users of the L 7047 and that finding a solution should be a priority. I will continue to keep the matter on the agenda. I also asked at that meeting that

the council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) would examine the matter of safety at the Shronedarragh and Upper Barraduff entrances to Barraduff village. The council replied that these crossroads/junctions would be examined by the roads design office during 2017. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Clasheen, Killarney

community spirit

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Christmas message from the Bishop of Kerry HAIL and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the Most Pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. In that hour vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, through the merits of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of his Blessed Mother. Amen. To experience the heart of Christmas simply let your eyes dwell on and ponder the crib scene. Circumstances were very difficult for Mary and Joseph. There was not a room available as she Bishop Ray Browne. gave birth. Through the kindness of a stranger they were offered a stable. Shepherds came with a word of rejoicing and encouragement. Even the warm breath of the animals brought some comfort to the new born. Many peoples’ Christmas is difficult. The kindness, thoughtfulness and assistance of friend or stranger can bring great comfort. Have a heart to feel and eyes to see the needs of those around you. Continue to give generously to St Vincent de Paul, sadly the demands on their services are greater than ever. Baby Jesus brought joy to Mary and Joseph and all who visited the stable. Jesus is ever present to us all. He is as present in our world today as he was in that stable that first Christmas day. He brings the same joy to each of us this Christmas. Our faith is summed up in the words of the angel to the shepherds: “Today a saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” In the hymn, Hail Redeemer, King Divine, we sing of Jesus as: “Lord of life, earth, sky and sea, King of love on Calvary, Prince of everlasting Peace.” Preparing for and celebrating Christmas asks us to have time for reflection, time for prayer, time for Christmas carols, for the Gospel story in the Bible. What spiritual preparation will you make? Resolve to join in the celebration of Sunday Mass. Is it your privilege to bring the birth of Jesus alive for young children? Will your family visit the church crib? Does the crib in your home nourish the faith of your family? It is wonderful that Christmas continues to be a family season. Look back as a family with gratitude on another year well lived, remember loved ones who now enjoy Christmas in heaven. Jesus was born into the Holy Family to open the door into heaven for us all. A sincere thank you to everyone in the diocese (laity, religious, deacons and priests) for all you have contributed to the life of your parish and diocese over the past year. Our communities are alive with prayer, faith, hope and love. God bless each and every home and family this Christmas – bless the old and the young, the strong and the weak, the married and the single, the successful and the struggling. Show special care Lord for anyone who comes to this Christmas heart-broken, dispirited, hurting or struggling. Where there is darkness let the star of Bethlehem and the Christmas candle be a warm light. Lord, give all families and communities in Ireland a sense of unity – and the desire to be good neighbours and to work together to promote the good of all. Let no one in our communities be alone, neglected or lonely this Christmas. A happy and a holy Christmas to every home throughout the diocese. Beannachtaí na Nollag daoibh go léir. Reflexology and Indian head massage

Deep relaxation treatments are required to balance and rest the body after the party season, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

IF YOU have never tried reflexology, there is no better time than now. Reflexology helps increase circulation and calm the body. With improved circulation, you know that every system in the body will be working at its best. You will be sleeping better, and when you get up, you will actually feel like you’re well rested. In addition, reflexology is covered by all health insurance companies; just check your policy to see if you are covered. Indian head massage helps increase mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders. It improves blood circulation, lymphatic flow and aids elimination of toxins and is particularly good for reducing the effects of stress and tension.

One of the most common stress-related complaints are headaches. One in three individuals consult their doctor with this symptom every year, and 95% of the population suffer from them at some time. Massaging the scalp, face, neck and shoulders relieves eyestrain, improves concentration, eliminates muscular tension and restores joint movement. Massaging the head encourages the supply of oxygen to the brain, which is one of the best ways of reducing stress. Oxygen helps you think clearly and creatively, the same effect is brought about through exercising. Call us at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio on 064-6632966 for more information.

Christmas romance is in the air ROMANCE is always in the air at Christmas and if you are looking ahead to planning your big day, then take note that The Brehon is hosting its wedding consultation days on New Year’s Day and January 2. Kelly Ann O’Connor, the wedding coordinator at The Brehon, will answer your questions on organising your dream celebration. “Christmas is the most popular time of the year for proposals,” said Kelly Ann. “Couples are home for the holidays, they have time off from work and are surrounded by their friends and family, it really is a lovely time of the year to celebrate such a special occasion.” To help newly engaged couples begin the planning process, Kelly Ann and her team will host two wedding consultations days at The Brehon. Couples will have the opportunity to meet and chat with Kelly Ann while also viewing the banqueting suite fully decorated. “The Brehon is the perfect hotel for couples seeking an extra special venue for their wedding day,” says Kelly Ann. “From the moment you enter the hotel’s marble reception area, you understand the special emphasis we place on making guests welcome and providing award-winning service.” Earlier this year The Brehon was numbered among TripAdvisor’s Top Ten Hotels in Ireland and just last month the hotel was announced as a finalist in the WeddingsOnline Awards for best wedding venue in Munster. Kelly Ann will host two wedding consultation days at The Brehon, on New Year’s Day and again on January 2 from 12pm to 4pm. For more information visit www.thebrehon.com

Grace Notes 'And so this is Christmas, and what have you done?'

At this time of year that we tend to take stock of where we are at in our lives, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

DURING the festive season, we try to sum up the year as a good one, or a not so good one. We ask ourselves if we feel we have reached our goals and if we have grown as people.

I feel that it is also very important to ask ourselves if we feel we have given of ourselves and shared our gifts for the good of others. Christmas is a time for giving and it is the ideal time for those of us involved in the Arts to give of our time and our talents in order to benefit those who may need some help. This can be done in so many ways. Perhaps you could paint a picture of a scene that will bring someone back to a place they loved. Maybe you could organise a fundraising concert or you might just call to someone's home and sing them a few songs. I think us artists need to remember that

we have been blessed with wonderful gifts and to share them with others is the ultimate reward.

As an artist myself I am very aware of how often we are asked to do things “for the experience”, or, “for the exposure”, which tends to drive us mad! Everyone cannot do everything but if you can pick one thing that you can do, for free, for the good of your fellow man, then do it. There are certain times of the year when the world of the arts comes into its own and I think Christmas is the most special of all. What would Christmas be without music and poetry and beautiful imagery? So many of our memories and emotions are attached to those wonderful Christmas songs and carols. So, I think if we can all agree that if people support the arts then the arts can support the people. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas filled with love, warmth, smiles and music. •Grace’s website is gracefoley.ie

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS + JESUS WEPT

KERRY NEEDS MORE DIRECT RAIL SERVICES, NOT FEWER NEWS that the direct train route between Dublin and Tralee is in jeopardy has been met with dismay by all of us train users. The 2016 Rail Review recommends dropping the direct Dublin to Tralee train. This would have a massive impact for our county. We are isolated enough when it comes to transport infrastructure so this would be simply another unbearable blow. Fine Gael Kerry senator Paul Coghlan highlighted the issue in the Seanad and I think it is important we all heed his advice to make a submission on the issue in order to ensure this service is maintained. What the Rail Review is recommending is that every train out of Kerry change at Mallow. It is utterly ridiculous. I mean, why? As a regular user of the Kerry to Cork service, it really irks me that I am always forced to change at Mallow, usually experiencing a lengthy wait. It means what could be a straightforward, short journey is drawn out and made quite awkward. It has been this way for as long as I can remember and has always annoyed me. But now to have the same fate befall the route between our county and the capital? It makes me want to scream. Kerry is a sought-after international tourist destination. What we need is more direct rail services to our county, not fewer. People can make a submission before the January 18 deadline at www. nationaltransport.ie.

Joseph and Mary may well have thought they were back home and among friends when they reached Bethlehem, Royal David’s City, but they were treated like strangers and were forced to lodge in a barn. Nativity plays ever since seem to glorify this and we are given the impression that all was well. Things were far from well. Joseph could do nothing to help his pregnant wife as she went into labour in a shed surrounded by donkeys and cows and sheep. It was hardly the beginning he had planned for their child. We are told there was no room at the inn and the innkeeper gets the ‘‘boos’’ reserved for the baddies. It was all very well for the angels to be singing on high but Mary and Joseph were in a bad place. They had been shunned at their most vulnerable time. They were alone in a strange place with a new baby and it must have been terrifying for them. Then, just to rub it in, the Three Amigos arrive with gold, frankincense and myrrh. Blankets, hot food or clothes would have been good. Today the world is an inn and, it seems, death the journey’s end for the migrants all over the world who are homeless, dispossessed, expelled, tortured and condemned to a life of

pain, misery and a lingering death. If Jesus were to return today what would he say? The wars which have ravaged the countries where creation and civilisation began have spread their horror all over the world and man’s inhumanity to his fellow man results in the world-wide suffering we are witnessing today. People may ask how God lets this happen. He doesn’t. Man does. God isn’t dead, man is. It is we who allow the bad things happen. Aleppo, once the third-largest city in the Ottoman Empire after Constantinople and Cairo, is bombed to bits and we do nothing. We wonder why Europe didn’t intervene earlier when Hitler tried to exterminate the Jews. We need wonder no more. We must be careful when we fight monsters that we don’t become monsters. Remember Niemoller: “When Hitler attacked the Jews I was not a Jew, therefore I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions I was not concerned. Then, Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church and there was nobody left to be concerned.”

VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD A TALE OF TWO PICTURES The festive season can be hectic, but Christmas also offers us a chance for reflection, says Trevor O’Donoghue ALLOW me to present two pictures that gave us a unique insight and pause for thought, to contemplate our place in the universe. The first one was taken on Christmas Eve in 1968 by William Anders, a passionate nature photographer and an astronaut onboard Apollo 8. As the spacecraft orbited the moon, the view out the window showed the earth rising over the moon’s horizon. Anders grabbed a camera and fired off a few shots. The resulting image of a three quarters full earth as it rose on another world, illustrated for the first time our place in the universe. We live on a ball of rock, water and clouds, a planet of many different nations, countries and creeds, but all united on one planet. It was a powerful image that helped shape the environmental movement, whilst serving to reinforce the idea that no matter our differences, we all share and are responsible for the same world. The second image was taken in 1990 by the voyager 1 spacecraft as it sped out of our solar system. Once it’s primary mission at Jupiter and Saturn was completed, the camera was turned around and pointed at earth and the sun. The distance was six billion kilometres. The resulting image showed earth as little more that a dot, a pale blue dot almost lost in the glare of a sunbeam. The guy responsible for getting the image

High Court hears campaigners don’t believe there are enough beds for homeless taken was Carl Sagan and of the pale blue dot he had the following to say: “On it, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there – on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.” Merry Christmas and thanks for reading. • Feeling curious about the world around you? THE High Court has heard that the Home Sweet Home campaigners don’t believe there are enough beds in Dublin city for the homeless. The musician Glen Hansard is among four of the campaigners challenging an application for an order to have Apollo House vacated, notes Breakingnews.ie Ross Maguire, who is representing Glen Hansard and three other Home Sweet Home campaigners, has told Mr Justice Paul Gilligan the consequence of a court order to vacate Apollo House would “unreasonably” render the occupants homeless – a claim dismissed by Rossa Fanning, who’s acting for the NAMA-appointed receivers. Apollo House, a ten-storey derelict building on Dublin’s Tara Street, has been occupied by Home Sweet Home volunteers and up to 30 homeless people since the end of last week. The receivers have moved to assure the occupants that they do not want to see anyone spending Christmas on the streets.

Garden Magic GET SET FOR JANUARY The New Year is upon us, and now is the time for New Year’s resolutions, says Debby Looney

THERE is nothing more satisfying than running your hands through soft, crumbly, homemade.... compost! Resolve to recycle all the kitchen and garden waste this year. There are so many ways to create your own compost, from using a few pallets to buying a composter. The rotary composter, “pig on a spit” composter is a compact and effective composter, which gives excellent results. By rotating the waste the breakdown is accelerated. Turning has the same effect on an open heap. Scattering chicken manure pellets on the heap also helps, or you can use a compost accelerator. Aeration is very important in the compost heap, putting cardboard such as kitchen roll cores, or small twigs, will achieve this. Most importantly, don’t put any cooked food in there! For cooked food, use a food cone. This is a semi-submerged cone in which you can put cooked food, even bones! The food breaks down and seeps into the soil in a safe

and ecologically friendly way. For excellent advice on all types of composting visit stopfoodwaste. ie Out in the garden, cut back ornamental grasses. It is fine to cut back to just a few inches above ground level. If left too late the grass will start growing and the job becomes impossible! Plants worth having in the garden at this time are any plants with catkins such as hazels, willows and alders. Viburnum bodnantense Dawn is a lovely variety to have, it has beautifully scented flowers before the leaves appear, and they last for a long while as cut flowers. If you have not gotten around to pruning the apple and pear trees yet, now is still a good time, however pruning any Prunus variety, plums, almonds or cherries should be left until growth starts, to avoid silver leaf disease. April or May is a good time to start pruning these.

Council to invest €300,000 in Plunkett Street upgrade KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL will publish a call for tenders this week for a major enhancement of one of Killarney’s busiest streets some €300,000 will be invested in upgrading works on Plunkett Street with the work expected to begin in the spring of 2017. The Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin, welcomed the news saying that this was further evidence of Kerry County Council’s commitment to investing in infrastructure in Killarney town. “We will go out to tender this week and it is hoped that the work will get underway in the first quarter of 2017,” said Cllr Cronin. “The project involves the widening of footpaths along the street as well as the laying of a very high-spec road surface. About €300,000 will be spent on the street which will further enhance facilities for pedestrians and motorists alike.” The Killarney Municipal District Manager and Head of Finance with Kerry County Council, Angela McAllen, said the council is committed to carrying out the work as soon as possible. “This is another key investment in the public realm in Killarney and will make Plunkett Street more pedestrian friendly. It is one of the town’s busiest streets and this enhancement will make the street more appealing for pedestrians and shoppers,” she said.

Gavin Lyne wins Irish Skills Apprentice Mechanic of the Year award

Felipe Massa back in F1 FELIPE MASSA has accepted an offer to return to Formula 1 next year with Williams, in a deal that paves the way for Valtteri Bottas to join Mercedes. Although final contracts have not yet been completed, Massa has decided to go back on his decision to retire. The Brazilian had announced this year that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix would be his last F1 race. But with Mercedes looking to sign Bottas to replace retired world champion Nico Rosberg, Massa has now agreed to stay at Williams for at least another year in order to help the team in a season where big regulations changes are set to reward experience. Massa's decision means the way is clear for Mercedes to sign Bottas, who has been tipped as the main candidate to replace Rosberg. Mercedes has made it clear that a decision on who will partner Lewis Hamilton will not be announced before next year. The world champion team admitted it had been caught off guard by Rosberg's decision and that it wanted to sort its line-up as quickly as possible.

Gavin Lyne receiving an award from Aherns Garage to celebrate his winning the Irish Skills Apprentice Mechanic of the Year title. He is pictured with Paul Ahern, Pat Ahern, dealer principal, and Padraig O’Connell, service manager.

THERE were celebrations at Aherns Garage in Castleisland this week as Gavin Lyne received a coveted national award. Gavin was named Irish Skills Apprentice Mechanic of the Year 2017. Gavin represented Aherns Garage in the All Ireland Skills competition and on winning the title will now represent Ireland at the World Championship to be held in Abu Dhabi in 2017. 22.12.16 Killarney Advertiser

PRIMARY school pupils from around the county have demonstrated their artistic skills by highlighting road safety in their entries for inclusion in the 2017 Kerry County Council Road Safety Calendar competition. Paul Neary, Senior Engineer, Operations & Safety Department, Kerry County Council, presented the 12 winning pupils from various primary schools around the county with a copy of the 2017 Road Safety Calendar which features their artwork. Each month features one of the images created by the winning pupils who were selected from a total of over 400 entries. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Michael O’Shea, presented individual prizes to the winning pupils. Pupils were invited to enter a picture containing a road safety message. The winners included Killarney students Teddy Muldoon, St Oliver’s NS, Ballycasheen (March), Ali Cahill Knockanes NS, Headford (June), and Emma Byrne, Lissivigeen NS (July). The Cathaoirleach of Kerry, Cllr. Michael O’Shea congratulated each of the pupils, saying: “The standard of the competition is extremely high and it is great to know that these pupils, through their drawings, are contributing to raising awareness of road safety throughout the county.” The 2017 Road Safety Calendar will be available to download from Kerry County Council’s website: www.kerrycoco.ie

In loving memory of Noreen Curtin late of Knocklebede, Kilcummin, Killarney who died on the 2nd of January 2012.

Don’t weep for me my friends When I am gone to rest. Bring no flowers from a hot house For the wild ones I love best.

They say there is a reason They say that time will heal But neither time nor reason Will change the way I feel.

Bring me a garland of freedom flowers Growing wildly on the hills A delicate rest of primroses, a bunch of daffodils.

For no one knows the heartache That lies behind my smile No one knows how many times I have broken down and cried.

From the hedgerow as you pass pick me a slip of wild woodbine And from the woodlands that had my heart a bunch of bluebells fine.

I want to tell you something Noreen So there won’t be any doubt You’re so wonderful to think of But so hard to be without.

Rest them on a nest of ferns of the finest green Then you have brought to me my friend, A garland for a Queen.

Always loved and remembered by husband Bertie.

Dearly loved and sadly missed by your sons, daughters, daughters-inlaw, sons-in-law, brothers and sisters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In loving memory of Christy Quilligan late of Spire View, Ballyspillane Killarney who died on the 21st of December 2014.

Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living without you is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us Your heart was so kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. The special years will no return, When we were all together, But with the love in our hearts, You walk with us forever.

My hero, my mentor A legend to the end, My kind-hearted grandfather Who had many many friends. You were given so many crosses to carry in life but you never complained You just picked up the pieces again and again. You were the glue that kept us strong together Here with us always, leaving us never. But now that you are gone Dada what are we to do, Because the one thing you never taught us was how to live without you. Now my heart is broken and once again I face those familiar long dreary days and nights without end. But I promise you Dada I’ll try to stay strong And you must promise me when it gets too much you’ll help me along. I know you’re always with me, I can feel you everyday, But not being able to see or talk to you, Leaves this ache in my heart that will never go away.

There is always a face before me, A voice I would love to hear, A smile I will always remember, Of a husband I loved so dear. Deep in my heart there is a picture More precious than silver or gold It’s a picture of you Christy Whose memory will never grow old.

Loving and cherished memories of our dear Mother and Grandmother Pat Cleary, late of Muckross Road, Killarney who left this world on the 1st of January 2013. “Time for me to go now, I won’t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, Way up in the sky. In the morning sunrise, When all the world is new, Just look for me and love me, As you know I loved you. Time for me to leave you, I won’t say goodbye; Look for me in rainbows, High up in the sky. In the evening sunset, When all the world is through, Just look for me and love me, And I’ll be close to you.

From your heartbroken granddaughter Bridget, husband John and family.

It won’t be forever, The day will come and then My loving arms will hold you, When we meet again.

Right now I’m in a different place, And though we seem apart I’m closer than I ever was, I’m there inside your heart. I’m with you when you greet each day, And while the sun shines bright, I’m there to share the sunsets too, I’m with you every night. I’m with you when the times are good, To share a laugh or two, And if a tear should start to fall, I’ll still be there for you, And when that day arrives, That we no longer are apart, I’ll smile and hold you close to me, Forever in my heart. When God was making mothers, He must have made a fuss, He spent alot of time on one, And gave that one to us.

Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartache, When someone speaks your name, Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, Living without you Is the hardest part of all.

Rugby news & views A TOUGH loss for Munster on the road last weekend. Rassie’s men travelled to Welford road hoping to build on the epic display at Thomond Park last weekend, which saw the home team romp home on a 38-0 scoreline. However, history was never going to repeat itself and Munster were truly braced for the backlash. Munster were edged out late on in the game as it looked like Munster were going to win for the 7th time in a row. With Simon Zebo in the bin following a bewildering yellow, Niall Scannell crossed the line for a well worked try, however an Owen Wilson strike from inside his own half saw Leicester snatch the victory in the end. tre penalty to win the game. What a way to win a match, if you’re a Tigers fan of course! A very exciting 6 Nations beckons in February, which should see Joe Schmidt’s men challenge for the title, while Munster are back in European Champions cup action in early January. Rassie’s men will be looking forward to putting a difficult 2016 behind them following the untimely shock of Anthony Foley’s death and push on to the knockout stages of the Cup. Meanwhile rugby in Kerry goes from strength to strength as all clubs compete in their respective divisions of the Munster junior league

and with hundreds and hundreds of children playing Minis rugby every weekend, the future of rugby in Kerry has never looked so bright. Girls rugby is growing on a fantastic scale and it was great to see so many girls from Killarney RFC take part in a recent girls rugby event at Listowel RFC. Also, with teams fielding strong squads between under-14 and 18, the next generation of future stars are emerging. Finally, ahead of the Christmas break, I would like to wish all rugby fans, players and all in Killarney RFC a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year!

ROB HEFFERNAN WALKS TALL

“I

Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews Rob Heffernan’s book Walking Tall: The Autobiography of a World Champion and Olympic Medallist WHAT amazed me most when I met Rob Heffernan the Cork city man was his small frame, a real lightweight weighing in at 128lbs, but a champion walker in Ireland, Europe, The World and the Olympics, of course. Rob said: “Yes, it has meant huge sacrifices, not just for me, but also for Marian and for our children.” Marian is a champion athlete in her own right, but she put her own running career on hold so that he could train and compete in races all over the world. Rob Heffernan’s story unfolds in his recently published autobiography, Walking Tall. He is the only man to compete in five Olympic Games where he has learned the highs and lows of competing. What’s it all for one asks as he puts his body and mind through a hugely demanding training schedule battling his way against the best race walkers in the world. There are high points of course, such as becoming world champion in Russia in 2013, or that very long wait until early 2014 when he was in the gym in Fota island resort.

had waited for what seemed an eternity for one international medal and suddenly I had two. It was a lovely feeling,” he said.

I AM CLEAN He knew that he was clean, but he had strong suspicions that some of the other race walkers especially those from Eastern countries, were cheats, taking banned performance enhancing drugs. His mind slips back to his childhood days, when he won his first medal and kept shining it and minding it. At that time he was only a small garsún, 4 foot 6 inches in height, but even then he walked tall. It was a rare uplift in spirits for the Ballyphehane juvenile who was too small to make any impact with Nemo Rangers GAA. The odds were stacked against him coming from such a deprived background. At that time his parents took no interest whatsoever in his sporting efforts and in his schooling. They were more interested in putting bread on the table. Medals did nothing to put the family food on the table. He fell out with his father for several years because of this but both parents

came back on board in later years as his athletic career blossomed. Later he acknowledges that his parents taught him a lot. “My mam taught me discipline and how to stand up for myself. If I can pass on those two lessons of hard work and discipline to my own two kids, I won’t be doing half bad.” He admits that he gets on well with his father now. “He’s not just my dad; he’s my friend and a good man. He still has my interests at heart.” He dropped out of school and went working to earn money for the family. However, he bit the bullet after a few years and returned to school to do a PLC course. He matured as an athlete and tells his readers about how important it was for him to keep winning, as he depended on the Irish Sports Council for a subsistence grant. That increased as he performed better in the international races. He also reveals that he even had to get his name changed by deed poll from Kiely to Heffernan. He had to resort to DNA to prove his paternity for Meghan, his first daughter. We read of the pressure of reaching the Olympic qualifying time on five occasions and his friendship with Gillian O’Sullivan, Killarney’s champion race walker. He tells us of his depression in a very open manner citing the lows and highs of his career such as finishing 28th in the Sydney Olympics; he was so disillusioned he wanted to retire. He was fortunate to come under the tutelage of world champion Robert Korzeniowski which he described as “a game-changer”. That helped to lift him out of his depression.

He feels that his wife Marian, who sacrificed her own running career for him should now have her chance to resume her schedule. The World Championships are fixed for London in 2017. It’s an alluring challenge and he is not ruling out competing there and who knows he may be bidding to qualify for his sixth Olympics. It is a far-fetched dream, but he is a dreamer. Dreams became a reality and Rob’s story is well told and well worth reading. Walking Tall runs to 273 pages, is published by Collins’ Press and is available in the local bookshops. NEW KERRY HURLING MANAGER Fintan O’Connor is the new Kerry Senior Hurling Manager in succession to Ciarán Carey. He will take up the position with immediate effect. His appointment is for an initial two-year term with the option of a third year. Tipperary based O’Connor will announce his management and backroom teams at a later date. WHO IS FINTAN O’CONNOR? Fintan has been coach/selector with the Waterford Senior Hurling Team under Derek McGrath for the past two years. He has been coach/selector at Waterford Institute of Technology for the past three years during which they reached two Fitzgibbon Cup Finals, winning in 2014. He managed Cappoquin Hurling Club leading them to Munster Intermediate Hurling Club Title in 2014 and he managed Fourmilewater Hurling Club from 2009-2013 leading them to a county semi-final in 2013. Nollaig Shona to all readers of On the Ball and best wishes for 2017.

THE FUTURE He looks to the future of Irish athletics and wants to see more done “especially officially supported training camps”.

Going for Olympic gold in the 50km walk in Rio 2016. Behind Rob Heffernan are Jared Tallent (who went on to take silver), Andrés Chocho of Ecuador (hidden), Slovakian Matej Tóth (the eventual winner) and Japan’s Hirooki Arai. PICTURE: JAMES CROSBIE/INPHO

Gneeveguilla Basketball Club

BOYS U16 DIV 1 CUP Gneeveguilla 46- St Brendan’s 45 after extra time (Played 13/12/2016) With these two teams sitting at the top of Div 1 this was set up to be an exciting clash and it didn’t disappoint with the home side just edging a victory by one point. Both teams got off to a nervous start missing some easy baskets but after a few minutes Paul O’Leary for Gneeveguilla opened the home account from the free throw line and Laurence Guaedicro responded straight away to put Brendan’s up 2-1. After exchanging a few baskets Gneeveguilla finished the first quarter strong to lead 12-7 going into the second quarter. Gneeveguilla dominated the second quarter with Daniel Fleming scoring 2 early baskets and Ronan Collins adding 9 points. Brendan’s kept in touch with James Fernane and Rap Buvaplas adding scores to leave the half time score 29-18 to the home side. At this point the home side looked in control but the best was yet to come. Brendan’s started the second half very strong with scores from Enda O’Connor and Stephan Bowler. But it was their defence that did the real work keeping Gneeveguilla to just 5 points in this quarter. It was 34-32 going into the last quarter with the home side just in front. Gneeveguilla struggled at the start of this quarter failing to convert a few chances. James Fernane and Kevin O’Connor put Brendan’s in the lead and with 2 minutes left on the clock they lead by 6 and it looked like they had done enough. But up stepped David Gleason and sunk a super 3 pointer from well outside the three point line giving the home side momentum. The next minute was end to end with a few turn overs and then with only a few seconds on the clock Charlie Collins sunk a 3 pointer taking us to extra

Rap sunk 2 from the free throw line but the home side hung on for the tightest of wins 46-45 to go through to the Cup final. GIRLS U14 DIV 1 Gneeveguilla 43 – Glenbeigh 26 (Played 18/12/2016) Gneeveguilla hosted Glenbeigh Falcons on Sunday evening last in Rathmore. Glenbeigh got off to the stronger start with some great driving and finishing from Eimeer Burke (12) Gneeveguilla’s Katelyn O’ Leary got the important opening basket and Alice O’ Leary (4) and Kornelia Cybul (8) followed with scores. It was 7-10 to Falcons at the end of the 1st quarter. Gneeveguilla dominated the second quarter with Caoimhe Guerin Crowley (6), Ciara Hickey (6) and Aisling Brosnan (7) impressing. It was 22-15 to Gneeveguilla at half time with Glenbeigh’s Marian Duffy (5) helping to keep Falcons in touch. This was a high tempo game, however Gneeveguilla’s defence was very strong keeping the Glenbeigh side out. It was 32-21 to Gneeveguilla at the end of the 3rd quarter and they kept up the momentum in the 4th to secure the win 43-26. Well done all.

Munster Junior Cup: Kerry Area Final Killarney Celtic 2 Dingle Bay Rovers 0 As expected, this was simply a brilliant game. Dingle, with Sean Fitzgerald and Sean Mhici Ó Conchuir pressing hard, made the better start but were repulsed by a defensive unit in which captain fantastic John and Jamie were superb. Once Celtic began to take control of the middle, the tireless work rate and determination of lone striker Cathal O’Shea began to pose them problems, but it was scoreless at halftime. In the 60th minute Cathal was pulled down when a goal looked inevitable. It wasn’t a nasty foul, but it was deliberate to deny a goal-scoring opportunity, and the referee brandished red, although he deemed the offence to be outside the square. That made no difference to John, whose brilliant free-kick smashed into the net. Celtic had the upper hand from then on, but Dingle creditably never gave up and it was only after a lovely sweeping team move that Cathal made the game safe, timing the race between himself and the keeper to perfection before neatly dinking it home. Fantastic game, and fantastic result. Celtic: Brian Kelly, Chris O’Leary, Brendan Falvey, John McDonough, Jamie Spillane, Wayne Sparling, Stephen Hayes, Gary Keane, Pa McGrath, Matt Keane, Cathal O’Shea. Subs Conor Randall, Stephen McCarthy, Joe Hurley, Presley Dube, Conor McCarthy, Roy Kelliher, Conall Murphy Dingle: Tomas Sayers, Micheal Flannery, Jason Hickson, Mark O’Sullivan, Donnacha Higgins, Brian Rayle, John Michael O’Connor, Joe Sheehy, Luke Burgess, Colm Vegas, Sean Fitzgerald. Sub Mikey Geaney Denny Premier B: Killarney Celtic B 2 Castleisland 6 Celtic played their hearts out against a strong Castleisland, but Jonathon Downey was on fire with no less than five goals, Stephen McCarthy scoring their other one. There was a definite hint of offside about their first goal but conceding two more straight after the break was fatal. Chris Davies and John Falvey, with an absolute beauty, were on target for us. U17 League: Killorglin 2 Killarney Celtic 3 Marc Kelliher is best known for stopping goals, but he played gamekeper turned poacher as an outfield player in this one and notched a superb hattrick. U13 Div One: Killarney Celtic A 6 Mastergeeha 1 Sean Fitzgerald scored two, Senan O’Leary, Jack O’Neill, and Calum O’Grady all hit the net, but the biggest cheer of all was for Cian McAuliffe, scoring his first ever goal for the club. U13 Div Two: Killarney Celtic B 7 Killarney Athletic B 0 A majestic display by Celtic, with Mike McCarthy claiming a hat-trick and Jack O’Sullivan, Jack Higgins, Martin O’Brien, and Garry Wynne completing a comprehensive victory. Athletic are a good side in their own right and will score against most teams, but came up against Celtic keeper Ewan McIndoe in superb form. U12 Div One: Killarney Celtic 5 St. Brendans Park B 2 Park were, as always, a quality side, but Celtic were on fire here, with Cathal Kelly scoring a brace and Liam Mulhern, Brian O’Connor, and Nacho Zulategui also finding the net. U12 Div Two: Tralee Dynamos B 9 Killar-

ney Celtic C 1 A gallant effort, but in fairness Dynamos were absolutely superb. Congratulations to U13 player Sean Fitzgerald on making the Kerry Schoolboys/ Schoolgirls Team of the Week. FIXTURES U15 Premier: Killarney Celtic v Dingle Bay Rovers, Wednesday 21st, 6.00pm U12 Premier: Killarney Celtic at home to Mastergeeha, Wednesday 21st, 7.00pm Full fixtures will resume on Saturday 31st

Squash News with Andrew Garnett

THE first half of the squash season drew to a close last week with the conclusion of the December competition. Unprecedented numbers saw five divisions in the men’s side for the first time ever and the ladies section continues to grow also. In Division 5, Adrian McCarthy played young Colm Cagney. Although serve swapped between players on a number of occasions, it was Adrian’s power that saw him overcome his opponent on a score of 3-0. The men’s Division 4 Final saw Eoin Horan and Tim Lynch facing off where once again it was a case of youth versus experience. Tim who of course has been a member of the squash club for many years had the tactical know how but it wasn’t enough to stop Eoin winning 3-1. Interestingly, it was pointed out on the night it’s the first time that an Aquila Club staff member has won a squash title in the December Competition, history made! Unfortunately, a bout of illness prevented Mike McCarthy from contesting the Division 3 Final and Ray O’Callaghan took the spoils as a result. In Division 2 we saw a real dingdong battle between Matt O’Connor and Tom Murphy. This game was played at a very fast pace with some great rallies taking place between the two as both went above and beyond to retrieve shots. Matt took the opening game to shoot into the lead but Tom found his rhythm to nab the next two and establish a 2-1 lead overall. The fourth game of the match was a very tense affair as service went over and back and with Tom

fading, Matt surely thought he could take it to a deciding fifth. However, it was not to be and Tom held on to win on a score of 3-1. The women’s final saw club stalwart Miriam Murphy play Zoe McHale who after a few years away marked her return in style. This match was an entertaining affair with both players making some nice shots and giving their all. When all was said and done it was Zoe who emerged victorious capping off a great season for her. The showpiece of the night paired reigning club champion Donnagh Crowley with Majic, a carbon copy of last year’s final. Those watching this game were treated to some top class squash as both players showed power and touch in equal measure with a vast array of shots. Some brilliant rallies were had and Majic had quite a few opportunities to make a mark but in the end it was Donagh’s shot making abilities that saw him run out winner on an impressive score of 3-0 and in doing so retaining the Maurice O’Donoghue Memorial Cup. A special word of thanks to all those who participated in the monthly competitions this year, it’s great to see so many new members joining. Thanks also to Mike Crowley and his team who ensure everything runs smoothly. Congratulations once again to all of this month’s winners. Finally, our gratitude to this month’s sponsor, The Aquila Club, and its staff who keep the place in tiptop shape.

EAST KERRY U21 CHAMPIONSHIP A FINAL Dr Crokes 2-10 Spa 1-11 Dr Crokes won the East Kerry Under 21 A Championship Final on Sunday last in a good open and sporting game of football against Spa, in Fitzgerald Stadium. In an evenly contested game, Dr Crokes took their chances near goal and led by 4 points at half time thanks to great saves by their goal keeper Johnny O’Leary. Spa fought back in the second half and equalised on 1-10 a piece on the 58th minute. In an exciting end to the game, Spa went ahead with a point from play at the end of normal time but Dr Crokes showed great patience and determination in working a goal in the last minutes of the game, to win by 2 points. Spa opened the brighter with two points, David Spillane and Shane Cronin on target. Spa would have pulled further ahead but for great goal keeping by Johnny O’Leary, who came off the line to intercept the ball and end what looked like a goal bound attack. A great run forward by Gavin White was cleared by the Spa defence. Dr Crokes again denied Spa a goal when Johnny O’Leary made a great save. In a quick break away, Micheál Burns drove forward and provided to Jordan Kiely for a well worked Dr Crokes goal, 1-0 to 0-2 on the 10th minute. It was nip and tuck for the remainder of the half. Dr Crokes increased their lead with 3 unanswered points (David Shaw and Tony Brosnan(2)) 1-3 to 0-2, going into the second quarter. Spa might have reduced the gap to the minimum but for a great save at point blank range by Dr Crokes keeper, Johnny O’Leary on the 20th minute. Two Spa points (Liam Kearney and Dara Moynihan) reduced the gap 1-3 to 0-4. A scatter of points, Tony Brosnan, Jack Griffin and Jordan Kiely for Dr Crokes, to one by Mike Foley, for Spa left the score at the break: Dr Crokes 1-6 Spa 0-5. On the restart, Dr Crokes increased their lead with 2 unanswered points by Tony Brosnan. Spa, who came out with renewed determination, pressed froward repeatedly but the Dr Crokes goal keeper, Johnny O’Leary made another great save, maintaining his sides advantage. A turning point in the game came on the 40th minute when Spa won a 45m free. Liam Kearney took the 45, kicking a short pass. Liam took the return pass and rattled the Dr Crokes net, reducing the margin to a single

In an exciting finish, Spa equalised with 4 unanswered points (Liam Kearney(2f), Niall McCarthy, Shane Cronin) – 1-10 a piece with 2 minutes of normal time remaining. A point by Shane Cronin had Spa ahead as the game entered additional time. Total Football Academy develops creative and confident players

86

Killarney Advertiser 22.12.16

THE weekly Total Football Academy sessions incorporate a holistic approach to player development by providing each player with age specific technical, tactical, physical and psychological coaching in a professional training environment. Set up by UEFA-qualified coach Robin O’Day, the academy offers a stepby-step format. “It is developed in a non-competitive environment, which allows children to develop through their own mental and physical growth patterns, while also, crucially, enjoying the beautiful game,” said Robin. “Our aim is to develop confident, creative, technically skilled and intelligent players, while also allowing players the freedom to express themselves without the fear of failure.”

Academy coaching starts as young as under-7s and continues all the way through to under-14s. “Both our early development programme (under-7 to under-10) and intermediate programme (under-11 to under-14) consist of 4 x 10-week terms throughout the course of the season,” said Robin. “Our premier programme is available through invite only and is specifically designed for advanced players in the under-11 to under-14 age category.” A camp takes place in Killarney on December 27, 28 and 29, while a camp takes place in Tralee on January 5 and 6, for boys and girls aged between six and twelve.
