"what is told in the ear of a man is often heard 100 miles away" - Chinese Proverb

A new chapter opens in Killarney’s history THE gates will swing open for an eagerly anticipated preview of Killarney House & Gardens on Sunday, April 3. This special preview opening will afford locals the earliest opportunity to see first hand the on-going restoration and re-creation of the gardens, which has been funded by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland. The inside of house itself will open a little later in the year but even at this early stage it is easy to see the huge potential of this development. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, in association with Kerry County Council, cooperating with local management of the National Parks & Wildlife Service, are marking the event from 2pm-4pm with music, pageantry, activities and fun for all the family. “All are welcome to come along and watch as a brand-new chapter in Killarney's history is revealed,” said Killarney Chamber president Kate O’Leary.

Visitors on the day will have the chance to admire the many features of the gardens, including the muchloved Cherry Tree Walk, the Long Terrace Walk, the Patte d’Oie, the Wilderness and the Cherub Statue. A fun-packed afternoon is planned for children of all ages including a scavenger hunt and Easter bonnet parade. The afternoon line-up also features Killarney Falconry and a historical presentation on Killarney House & Gardens. Access on the day is via the Golden Gates on Muckross Road and via the Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial area on Mission Road. Kerry County Council welcomed the opening saying it will enhance what Killarney and Kerry have to offer to visitors to the area. Killarney Municipal District manager Angela McAllen said the opening of Killarney House and Gardens is hugely significant for the town and the county.

Carnival atmosphere in Killarney STROLLING through the town at the moment, one could well be forgiven for thinking it was the height of the summer season. The feelgood buzz started with the hugely successful second annual St Patrick’s Festival Cill Áirne which culminated in a dazzling parade through the town. We enjoy promoting the event as media sponsor and the whole team at Killarney Advertiser also relished creating a parade entry and interpreting the theme of Ireland: Past, Present and Future, travelling back in time as well as giving a sneak preview of the headlines of the future when Killarney is twinned with Mars! The community spirit that was evident among the participants and spectators and again at the parade awards ceremony on Tuesday night in the International Hotel was a pleasure to behold. The carnival atmosphere continued during the week thanks to the An Comhdháil World Irish Dance Championships for which 5,000 competitors arrived – along with several thousand more making up their cheerful entourages. See our coverage of the championships on page 18. Last but not least, excitement is gathering momentum in advance of the garden preview event at Killarney House & Gardens on April 3, details of which are highlighted above. Again this will be a great cultural and economic boost to the town. We wish all our readers a very happy Easter. EVE KELLIHER, EDITOR •Have you got a story or an opinion you would like to share? Question Are advertisements saying that landlords won’t accept tenants getting Rent Supplement allowed? Answer Are advertisements saying that landlords won’t accept tenants getting Rent Supplement allowed? Answer Equality legislation applies to lettings and accommodation. The Equal Status Acts 2000-2015 ban certain kinds of discrimination. Broadly speaking, discrimination means that you receive less favourable treatment than other people in a comparable situation on grounds of gender, civil status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race or membership of the Traveller community. Landlords cannot discriminate against potential tenants on these grounds. Since 1 January 2016, following an amendment to the Equal Status Acts, landlords cannot discriminate against tenants because they are getting Rent Supplement or any other social welfare payment, or a Housing Assistance Payment (HAP). This means that landlords can no longer state when advertising accommodation that Rent Supplement (or HAP) is not accepted and they cannot refuse to rent you accommodation because you are getting Rent Supplement, HAP or a social welfare payment. However if you are sharing with the home owner (under the Rent a Room Scheme, for example), a license agreement exists and the Acts do not apply. There are some other exemptions. If you feel you have been discriminated against by a landlord or their agent, you can contact the Workplace Relations Commission to find out more about making a complaint under the Equal Status Acts. Visit workplacerelations.ie for contact details. For more information about your rights you can contact the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

Between the jigs and the reels… WHIRLING into action on the world stage in Killarney, some of the most talented Irish dancers in the world have been strutting their stuff since last Saturday at the An Comhdháil World Irish Dance Championships in the INEC. It is estimated that over 22,000 people arrived in the town for the event, bringing an economic boost calculated to be worth around €12.6 million to the town. This is Killarney’s third year hosting what is the premier event for the An Comhdháil organisation, with 5,000 dancers from across the globe vying for a world title in the championships, which run until tomorrow. Matthew Donohoe, chairperson of An Comhdháil, said the event had become the annual family holiday for many. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Kate O’Leary welcomed the championships to the town. “The event is a huge benefit to Killarney and surrounding areas,” said Ms O’Leary. “We have seen spectacular photographs of the dancers against iconic Killarney landscapes which have spread far and wide globally on social media. It is difficult to quantify this kind of marketing for Killarney but it is hugely positive. It is extraordinary to note that the event is run by volunteers, it is such a slick professional event." Urging all to support the championships, the Killarney Chamber president said: “We are aware that the event is struggling financially and hope that if it returns again to Killarney we can rely on local businesses to support it. We wish all the dedicated contestants every success in Killarney.”

THE ALL-IRELAND BEHIND BARBED WIRE 1916 FIVE Killarney Crokes helped Kerry defeat Louth the 1916 All Ireland Final in their Welsh prisoner of war camp. The victorious Kingdom side, captained by Dick Fitzgerald, College Street, included his neighbour Pat O’Shea of New Lane and Mick Spillane, Boherchaol, together with MJ O’Sullivan and Willie Horgan, both of New Street. This Wolf Tone Tournament Final was played in Frongoch’s own Croke Park in Snowdonia following the Easter Rising. “Old” Tom Burke was captain of his Wee County side and is grandfather of journalist Sarah McDonald whose radio documentary “All Ireland Behind Barbed Wire” will be broadcast on RTE Radio 1 at 2pm on Saturday March 26th next. Kevin Stanley, the grandson of internee Joe Stanley, the acclaimed “Printer of the Rising”, contributes to this documentary with his grandfather’s original notes on the match. Fr Tom Looney links the Kerry and Killarney connections with this unique and historic All-Ireland played by ‘the men behind the wire’ in 1916.

Excitement at fever pitch at St Brendan’s College THE community is getting behind St Brendan’s College in the lead-up to its contesting the Senior Colleges Gaelic Football Final on Saturday, April 2. The team and management lined out yesterday (Thursday) for a press day at St Brendan’s College. Coach Garry McGrath praised the players highly, pointing to their “calm, understated approach and their sense of unity” as they approach the biggest game in the college sports calendar. All are invited to support the team in its bid for the Hogan Cup by donning your thinking caps and joining a monster table quiz in The Malton Hotel on Wednesday, March 30. The fundraiser, which is being organised by parents of students at the school, will support the final preparations of the college’s Hogan Cup team. Adult tables of four cost €40 while student tables are also available at €20. Tables for the quiz can be booked from the school office, on 064-6631021, or simply by coming to The Malton on Wednesday, March 30, at 8.30pm. The team will take on St Patrick’s College, Maghera, at 3pm on April 2 in Croke Park.

Killarney insurance business on the global stage LEADING Kerry insurance business JP Healy & Co Insurances Ltd, Killarney, has been hitting international headlines as it was profiled in prestigious financial magazine Acquisition International. John Healy, managing director of the New Street company, provides an in-depth feature in the publication, which is read in over 170 countries. JP Healy & Co Insurances Ltd previously featured in this magazine in early 2015. In the February 2016 edition, John Healy gives an overview of the insurance industry in Ireland. “The Irish insurance industry was frontpage news for the last quarter of 2015. Furthermore, latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures confirm that John Healy, MD, JP Healy car insurance rates increased by a whopping 31.1% & Co Insurances. to the year ending in December,” said John. “This increase was flagged since about February of 2015 and each month saw percentage increases tagged on. This is a huge increase, especially considering road traffic act cover is mandatory and cashstrapped customers are reeling from years of recession and austerity budgets. Unfortunately, we have seen further increases tagged on in January 2016 that have yet to be confirmed by the CSO.” So why is this happening and is there any end in sight? “The simple answer is that claims have increased. However, you need to drill down further into a statement like that to find the real information. For instance, in 2014 the limit for personal injury awards in the circuit court was increased from €38,000 to €64,000. This level of claims inflation was felt across the insurance market and was immediate,” he added. Mr Healy also outlines how the weather has also played a part in the industry. “Although we have been weathering storms financially, it is actual storms that severely affected us in the fourth quarter,” he said. Further rate increases appear to be on the way for 2016, he added. “I do hope we are the ceiling of these price pressures as any further increases could hamper our national economic recovery. However, there are some highly positive actions that could see fruition in 2016,” said Mr Healy.

Michael Healy-Rae says he feels lucky to be alive after farm accident KERRY TD Michael Healy-Rae has spoken this week about how he feels lucky to be alive after a farm accident. Deputy Healy-Rae was cornered by the cow and pinned between the slats of a holding pen. The last thing Deputy Healy-Rae remembers about the incident on Sunday is lying on the ground with the cow standing on his face. His son Kevin and neighbour John Joe Reilly rushed to his aid. If not for that, the outcome would have been fatal, he believes. Deputy Healy-Rae sustained badly bruised ribs in the attack but miraculously escaped major damage to his face and head. The Kerry TD said his experience underlined the importance of farm safety awareness. On his release from hospital on Tuesday, the Independent TD thanked all who had helped him in recent days. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank so much everyone who has been so kind to me over the last number of days since my accident,” he said. Thanking the management and staff in Cork University Hospital as well as the Gardaí who provided support on Sunday, he said: “The extent of my injuries is not too serious – just a few fractured ribs – but I will just have to take it easy for a number of days.” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae pictured recuperating at home in Kilgarvan. THE sun smiled on proceedings as over 400 families enjoyed a fun-filled action-packed afternoon at The Malton Hotel’s Charity Bunny Hop tea party last Sunday. TV3 presenters Colette Fitzpatrick and Aisling O’Loughlin and their families were among those enjoying the event, organised in aid of Down Syndrome Kerry. The Easter-themed family day included an animal road show, bouncy castle, magic show, puppet show, face painting, balloon modelling and a children’s dance. Of course, the Easter Bunny was the guest of honour and led the excitement of the Easter egg hunt, joined by numerous friends including Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Buzz Lightyear and Woody to name but a few. In addition to the entertainment and activities, The Malton’s executive head chef, Will Fitzgerald, created a tempting afternoon tea featuring a delicious array of freshly baked miniature cakes, pastries, and breads, as well as dainty finger sandwiches, along with a “cake pop” creation station for little ones and a decorating demonstration hosted by The Malton’s head pastry chef. The children also enjoyed a pop-up sweet shop and each guest departed with a Malton goodie bag. The event was hosted by the Scally family and all profits from the afternoon will be donated to Down Syndrome Kerry, a non-government funded charity, which relies on fundraising events to provide vital services in Kerry.

Andrew has all the ‘write’ stuff THE average Premier League footballer in England earns in a week what a doctor working for the National Health Service there earns in a year. The great Premier League stars can earn double and sometimes treble a doctor’s salary in the same time period. These are just two of the facts that emerge from Killarney student Andrew Quinlivan’s critique of the beautiful game. Andrew, a transition year student from St Brendan’s College, achieved third place in the Sports category of the prestigious Press Pass awards. Praising his entry, the judges noted: “He tells us that doctors save lives whereas footballers can save us from boredom - and don’t always succeed. Andrew’s work is as cutting as a good striker should be and well worthy of this recognition.” Andrew received his award from the Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, Damien English TD, last week at a ceremony in the Convention Centre in Dublin. Press Pass is a transition-year initiative that focuses on newspapers in education. “A specially created workbook goes out to all participating schools around Ireland in November each year and then we deliver newspapers free of charge over a two-week period. We had 7,500 students take part this year,” said spokeswoman Anne-Marie Lenihan. “The students then prepare entries for the journalism competition in four written categories (news, features, opinion and sport) and a photojournalism category. The schools put forward the best three to the national competition which is judged by a panel of journalists and editors from NewsBrands titles, chaired by Professor John Horgan.” You can read Andrew Quinlivan’s prizewinning entry on our website, see https://www.killarneyadvertiser.ie/andrew-writestuff/

PROVISION OF A CONTROLLED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING AT COUNTESS ROAD KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is to provide a controlled pedestrian crossing at Countess Road. The development was requested by Rory D’Arcy, principal of nearby St Oliver’s National School, Ballycasheen, for improved safety of the children attending the school. Welcoming the crossing, Councillor Brendan Cronin said: “I was delighted to Cllr Brendan Cronin. have allocated €4000 to this safety project. I wish to thank Kieran O’Halloran, Killarney Town Roads engineer, for meeting with Rory D’Arcy and myself in late 2015 and for preparing the estimated costs for this project which I requested following our meeting.” The total cost is €16,000 which has now been paid in full, said Cllr Cronin who added: “I wish to thank my fellow councillors who contributed to this vital project also. The works are set to commence in the coming weeks.”

Healy-Raes take to the catwalk FROM the Dáil to the catwalk, the Healy-Rae brothers strutted their stuff in Killarney to loud applause at the St Paul’s Basketball Club fashion show. The TDs were a huge hit at the show as it unfolded in Killarney Racecourse on Friday night. The event attracted a capacity crowd and was a major success. The highlight of the night was the performance on stage of the Healy-Rae brothers. Cheers rang out for Deputy Michael Healy-Rae TD who appeared at the very start of the show in the blue Kerry football jersey, togs and socks. Newly elected TD Danny Healy-Rae also brought the house down as he modelled the green and gold Kerry football jersey during the second half of the fashion show. He also performed traditional music on his accordion while his daughter Elaine joined him on stage playing the tin whistle. Popular local radio personality Brendan Fuller was another familiar face on stage while well-known basketballers Philip O'Connor and Jordan Lee also took to the catwalk. Kerry Stars Special Olympian Janet O’Donoghue was one of the many other models which included several juvenile members of St Paul's Basketball Club. All the models showcased items from Mods and Minis, Wisteria Boutique, Elvery's Sports, Villa Clothing, The Kerry GAA Sports Store, Miss Darcy's, Shirley's Unique Headpieces, New Look, Urban Heroes, Dowlings Sports Tralee and The Pillbox Boutique. Master of ceremonies extraordinaire Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan also entertained the crowd before inviting St Paul’s Basketball Club chairperson Tricia O'Shea to address the audience. Tricia was loud in her praise for everybody who helped and contributed to make the club’s fashion show a resounding success. Tricia thanked her fellow committee members and made a special presentation to fashion show organiser Patricia Ryan in recognition of all her hard work in contributing the success of the event. Several spot prizes were won in the raffle while the winner of the door prize of a hotel break at The Maritime Hotel Bantry (sponsored by The Gleneagle Group) was Vera Healy.

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS FROM PINOT GRIGIO PINOT GRIGIO is a grape that divides people. Critics hate its lack of sharp defining flavours and generic appeal. Fans love it for the same reasons. Originating in Middle Ages Burgundy, Pinot Grigio is most associated with Italy, commonly around Veneto, but is now grown around the World from the USA to Australia and everywhere in between. While it initially struggled to find its place, it was in Oregon where the idea

Events that turn the spotlight on deserving causes THE Kerry Hospice Foundation always puts its best foot forward on Good Friday. In Killarney, the Vivien O’Shea Annual Memorial Walk unfolds at Muckross this Friday morning. There is no registration fee and there is a bucket collection on the day. The 8km walk goes from Muckross House via Dinis, taking in a section of the Torc Trail, and will return to Muckross House. There is also a shorter walk for children and people with buggies to Bricin Bridge, covering around 6km. A whole host of walkers are also getting into their stride today in Kilcummin for the Kilcummin Hospice Walk. In 2015 the walk raised €2843 for the new Palliative Care Unit which is under construction in Tralee. “The organisers say a sincere ‘thank you’ to all those who helped and took part in the walk,” said a spokesperson. This year’s collection will also be donated to the Palliative Care Unit. Fundraising is very much to the fore these weeks, with a coffee morning taking place in aid of MS Ireland’s South Kerry branch on April 2. The event unfolds from 9.30am to 12pm in the Killarney Royal Hotel. Nine thousand people and their family members live with multiple sclerosis across Ireland and of that nine thousand there tare 1075 people with MS in the Southern Region (Kerry and Cork). Although MS is a progressive neurological condition that can affect a person’s health, lifestyle and relationships, many people with MS find ways to manage and cope with many of the effects and difficulties.

The house behind the yellow door YOUR home is your palace and this Tralee residence certainly lives up to that adage. The owners of this home went to Cremur, Bathroom, Tile, Stove and Renewable Energy Centre, on Upper Rock Street, Tralee, which proved the perfect one-stop shop when it came to ensuring this “house behind the yellow door” is both comfortable and elegant.

Sitting room To enusre the beautiful natural sitting room was warm and cosy, the team at Cremur installed a Hergom 6kw double-sided cassette stove which gives wonderful heat to output both to the sitting room and kitchen. This particular model carries the latest clean burn technology to allow you obtain the maximum efficiency from your appliance. Cremur supplied and fitted an Appalachian hickory narrow board 12mm laminate. This medium wood colour gives a warm rustic feeling to the room and is in keeping with the neutral theme. Kitchen The finest Spanish ceramic tiles ensure the kitchen looks picture perfect. Cremur supplied Cream Bisaleado Subway tiles. With its shiny glazed finish complemented by a unique bevel on all four sides this is the must-have kitchen wall tile for 2016 and complements the beautiful grey Cash and Carry kitchen.

Main bathroom Giving this bathroom an inviting warm look, Cremur chose a Turkish Travertine wall and floor tile. This is a natural stone harvested from the deep bed rock of Turkey and polished and cut to give your bathroom a real royal look, with the roll-top bath taking centre stage.

The upstairs ensuite bathroom has tiles and ware from Cremur’s contemporary 2016 range. As the downstairs utility bathroom is quite a small bathroom, Cremur opted to go with the “less is more theme”. The team used Italy’s very own White Pearl 60x30, complemented with a very simple corner sink and mirror with a compact Atlantis toilet. Lastly, to give the heat this beautiful home deserves Cremur has installed a Thermia Air to Water Heat Pump complemented with underfloor heating with a combination of radiators upstairs. This system gives the end user hot water priority and maintains a desired internal temperature at all times.

Cremur’s top tips on tiling

The beautiful natural sitting room is warm and cosy.

Colin House, Cremur sales executive, has some expert advice on tiling

Tip 1 Always have your kitchen/ colours in mind as you can complement your units with your desired colour, you do not have to match the tile colour to kitchen colour.

GET THE LOOK

Tip 2 When choosing a tile the first thing to check is the natural light coming into the kitchen (e.g. where there is more light choose a matte tile and where there is less select a shiny, glazed tile).

Tip 3 If it’s a small kitchen choose a large tile for the wall or if it’s a large kitchen choose a smaller tile. Tip 4 A light-coloured tile should be complemented with a darker-coloured grout to highlight the tile or a darkcoloured tile should be complemented with a lightcoloured grout. Top Kitchen Trends For 2016 Two-tone kitchen cabinets Keep upper cabinets white or neutral for a clean timeless feel, then go crazy with the lower cabinets by playing with various wood tones and deeper colours.

Coloured stainless steel appliances

Black stainless steel is creating a buzz among interiors experts. In a poll, nearly two-thirds of respondents on interiors website Houzz say they would consider the dark alternative to shiny silver metal.

Deep kitchen drawers

Ease of storage is the top kitchen priority during a remodel. And while deep drawers have been creeping up to replace lower kitchen cabinets for a while now, they’re only getting better – and more affordable. Dividers and inserts let you organise any shape or size of dish, pan or utensil under the sun.

Niche appliances

Looking for a little added luxury in the kitchen? Steam ovens promise to cook food more thoroughly and healthily than microwaves; warming drawers give cooks plenty of wiggle room to deliver hot meals to family and guests, and induction cooktops save space and are safer when you have younger children.

Punched-up white kitchens

White kitchen walls, cabinets and even countertops is a trend that will continue for many years to come. To avoid it looking too sterile, however, many designers and homeowners are learning to punch up an all-white space with pops of colour in details such as tiles, backspaces and wall colours.

Smart spaces

Designated spots for smart devices, hidden charging station to store devices like phones and tablets so they are always at hand and charged and avoiding unsightly cables.

Workhorse islands

Kitchen islands provide additional workspace but they have taken on so much more than that. With deep storage, prep sinks and room for seating, islands are becoming the central feature in modern kitchens.

Barely there kitchens

As kitchen layouts open out more, spatial identifiers like walls of cabinets and full-size appliances fade away, leaving behind airy, fluid spaces that serve multiple functions while looking barely there.

Surprising backsplash

You could play it safe with a white tile if your kitchen is neutral, but sometimes safe is so boring. Instead, consider a different combination, such as a coloured glass backsplash or bright ceramic tile.

Musician’s legacy strikes a chord in Killarney IT IS said that music is the universal language of mankind and this is certainly the case when it came to the generosity sparked by a Killarney contest for aspiring young performers. When seeking sponsorship for last year’s annual Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year, the club’s then-president Mike Stack contacted all the suppliers of his company Tricel asking them to put an ad in the concert programme. “One of the people I contacted was a guy called Peter Senior from a UK company called Polynt which is owned by the French oil company Total,” said Mike. Explaining that it would take months to get approval from France, Peter decided to send Mike a personal cheque and asked him to send him an invoice which he then claimed back from the company. Tragically, Peter died suddenly of a heart attack a short time after the competition. “It transpired that Peter was a musician (a blues guitarist) and his best friend, a guy called Paul Walton (also a musician), decided to hold a memorial concert in Peter's memory,” said Mike. As Paul was sorting Peter's affairs, he came upon the cheque to Killarney Rotary Club. “Paul contacted me and proposed the idea of presenting the funds raised from the concert to Rotary

Cian Buckley O’Sullivan, Fossa, who won the prize for the most promising strings musician in the recent Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition, pictured with Rotarians Sean Treacy, Mike Stack, Grace O’Neill and Paul Sherry. PICTURE: JOHN O’SULLIVAN, KILLARNEY PHOTOGRAPHIC

and specifically to the Young Musician competition. I thanked him for this gesture and said that we would present a prize in Peter's memory on the finals night,” said Mike. Paul raised €2,500 and presented this to the club. “This money is invaluable in safeguarding the future of the competition,” said Mike.

She and Tara promise plenty of delicious treats and an exciting raffle. “We hope the local community will come out and support this fun social event and we can help to raise some much-needed funds for MS Ireland - South Kerry Branch,” said Tara. What is reflexology? Reflexology is a gentle therapy that encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

REFLEXOLOGY has been around for over 4000 years, originally practised by the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. It was first recognised in the Western world in 1913 when Dr William Fitzgerald noticed that pressure on specific parts of the body could have an anaesthetising effect on corresponding areas in the body. This was further developed in the 1930s by a Physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham, who defined reflexology as it is practised today. Reflexology is the technique of applying gentle pressure to the reflexes (pressure points) on the feet or hands to clear the vital energy pathways that can become blocked due to the stresses and strains of modern day life. The hands and feet are like mirror images of the body, with various points on the feet representing different structures and organs in the body. A treatment involves the therapist applying gentle yet firm pressure to these points along with stretching and massage release blockages and

break up patterns of stress, restoring balance and relieving tension. Reflexology treatments can also improve a patient’s circulation and elimination - two very important factors in maintaining good health and well-being. Conditions that can benefit from reflexology treatment include women’s health, urinary tract infestcions, migraine, PMT bloating/ fluid retention, acne, allergies, sinusitis, hayfever, eczema, psoriasis, digestive problems, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, bloating, stress-related conditions, insomnia, disturbed sleep patterns and anxiety. SINGING FRIAR IS ON HIS WAY TO KILLARNEY A RENOWNED Italian tenor, Friar Alessandro, has confirmed he will perform in Killarney in April. Best known as the Singing Friar from Assisi, Friar Alessandro will take centre stage in St Mary’s Cathedral on April 17 at 8pm. The supporting musicians at Friar Alessandro's concert will be Killarney harpist and singer Marina Cassidy, accompanied by organist Sr Anne Flanagan, a Mercy Sister from Athlone. In 2011 Marina was made a Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and singers in the UK. All profits from the concert will go directly to the Franciscan Mission in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is suffering from a famine, as a result of a severe drought. Friar Alessandro shot to fame in 2012 on the release of his debut album Voice of Assisi. The album went to number one in the UK Classical Charts and was nominated in the Best Album of the Year Award in the Classic Brit Award 2013. In his visits during 2014 and 2015, Friar Alessandro appeared on the Saturday Night Show twice and performed to thousands of fans in sell-out concerts in Dublin, Cork and Galway. The 34-year-old, a dedicated Franciscan Friar, is signed to Decca Records, part of the Universal Music Group. In keeping with the vow of poverty made by Friar Alessandro, all proceeds from his singing career go straight back to the Franciscan Order’s charitable works. Friar Alessandro’s first Irish performance takes place in Athlone on April 15, at 8pm in Saint Anthony Church, Friary Lane, Athlone, Co Westmeath. He will perform in St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney on April 17, at 8pm. Tickets, €10, are available at the door, on Eventbrite.ie or can be purchased in advance from Killarney Cathedral.

KILLARNEY HOUSE: Green Shoots at Killarney House and Gardens By Aoife O’Carroll

THE preview opening of the ornamental gardens on April 3 marks a new stage in the fascinating life of Killarney House and Gardens. Entering via the new pedestrian entrance next to the statue of Monsignor O'Flaherty on Mission Road, visitors will discover a living piece of history being restored to its 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century splendour. The project has been a labour of love for those involved, particularly conservation landscape architect Elizabeth Morgan, horticulturalist Cormac Foley, and Muckross and Killarney Gardens horticultural supervisor Gerry Murphy. Using historical material and archaeological digs, a fascinating, challenging collection of styles and features was uncovered, inspiring a space that manages to reference every stage of the gardens’ evolution in a timeless manner. An important element of the restoration was the replanting of the Cherry Tree Walk. Now replanted with healthy new specimens, it returns to Killarney with its spring display of magnificent blossoms. Equally important was the recreation of a section of the Long Terrace Walk, enhanced with a modern planting border to lead the eye to dramatic views of the mountains. This is an example of the axial symmetry that was in vogue when Kenmare House was built in 1726. The recreated terrace references the grand scale of the overall design of the original Kenmare House formal gardens and its spectacular views of the lake, while accommodating the Cherry Tree Walk—a more recent addition. The formal gardens also feature a graceful Patte d’Oie (“goose foot”), so called because of its shape. Other nods to fashions of bygone days include the colour schemes of the formal gardens. Once established, these will reflect the tastes of the Victorian age, when Lady Gertrude oversaw the garden. The “Wilderness” area of the garden is only wild in the way the 18th-century Kenmares might have seen it. Planted in straight lines, this designed wooded feature includes chestnut trees, beech and oak, leading the eye toward the same stunning views that the Kenmares would have enjoyed. When you visit the gardens of Killarney House, keep an eye out for one of its oldest surviving residents. Photographs of the Kenmare House gardens of the 1870s and Killarney House grounds at Knockreer reveal a statue of cherubs that has moved with the Kenmares, witnessing the evolution of their gardens from the 19th century to today and into a rosy future. LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

VIGIL: LUKE 24:1-12: You might identify with the women through the events of that morning. They came search and found an empty tomb. Then they were told they were looking in the wrong place: ‘why look for the living among the dead’. Finally they had to cope with the staggering good news that Jesus was alive when they thought he was dead. Let their story remind you of your journey when you found life again where you thought there was none – you discovered that you had been looking in the wrong place. The women were the first witnesses to the resurrection. Remember the women in your life who have brought you good news, and the women who have been witnesses for you bringing you to faith in yourself, in others, or in God. The women did not keep their discovery to themselves but hastened to share the good news with the apostles. Have there been times when your heart has been full of good news that you were eager to share with others. John Byrne OSA

THE joy and newness of Easter is well captured in a homily by the fourth-century saint, Gregory of Nyssa: “This is the day the Lord has made – a day far different from those made when the world was first created and which are measured by the passage of time. This is the beginning of a new creation. On this day God makes a new heaven and a new earth. What is this new heaven? It is the firmament of our faith in Christ. What is the new earth? A good heart, a heart like the earth, which drinks up the rain that falls on it, and yields a rich harvest.”

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS +

BUMPY RIDE FOR KERRY ROAD USERS LAST week it was revealed that 650 kilometres of Kerry roads are in very poor condition. No surprises there for motorists and cyclists who have to face a bumpy ride any time they want to go anywhere in the greater Killarney area and beyond. Granted, our roads have faced a battering in recent times as unheard-of weather conditions have wreaked havoc in our county over the past couple of years. And while flooding can’t be helped, surely plans for effective drainage could be implemented with more force? Localised flooding on main roads in times of heavy rainfall has become the norm. Obviously we can’t control Mother Nature but is there an action plan in place to install suitable drainage facilities? As well as pockmarked and crater-filled road surfaces, many road and street markings need to be rectified. In Killarney town alone, for instance, certain sections of street surfaces are in a dilapidated condition and markings ar very poor. Yet our road taxes remain consistently high.

A survey carried out by Kerry County Council on non-national roads in the county found that hundreds of kilometres of roads in the county are in a poor condition. The local authority received a restoration improvement grant of over €6.9 million for 2016. Over the past twelve months, Kerry County Council has been engaged in a survey of regional and local roads. The study is almost 90% complete with 3,776 kilometres of routes examined. Some 30 kilometres of regional roads, 114 kilometres of local primary, 219 kilometres of local secondary and 283 kilometres of local tertiary roads are classified as being in very poor condition. But due to limitations of grant funding just 190 kilometres will be improved under the 2016 to 2018 Restoration Improvement Programme. Some 970 kilometres of non-national roads have been identified as in need of repair and surface dressing. These will be included in the Restoration Maintenance Programme. In 2015 surface dressing was carried out on 67 kilometres of road under this scheme.

THREAT TO TREES Almost all the ash trees across Europe are likely to be wiped out by a “double whammy” of a bright green borer beetle and the fungus that causes ash dieback, according to a comprehensive new academic analysis. The loss of the ash, one of the most abundant tree species in these islands, would mean losing even more trees than the 15 million elms killed by Dutch elm disease in the 1970s. Ash is the most common hedgerow tree. It is the second most common tree in woodland, after the oak, and there are many ash trees in towns and cities. “Between ash dieback and the emerald ash borer, it is likely that almost all ash trees in Europe will be wiped out, just as the elm was largely eliminated by Dutch elm disease,” said Peter Thomas, a tree ecologist at Keele University, UK, who did the analysis, published on Wednesday, in the Journal of Ecology. “The two together are a double whammy.” Thomas said the arrival of the emerald ash borer, originally from Asia but which has devastated North American ash and is now as close as Sweden, is inevitable: “It is only a matter of time before it spreads across the rest of the Europe – including Britain. Our European ash is very susceptible to the beetle and the beetle is set to become the biggest threat faced by ash in Europe – potentially far more serious than ash dieback.” “It is quite a big beetle, originally from Asia, and can fly a long way. In the past, insect diseases have spread very quickly,” Thomas told the Guardian. He said attempts to halt its spread in North America, by trying to catch male beetles in traps baited with female pheromones for example, have failed. Ash dieback was first reported in the UK in 2012 but given the large number of sites it was found at, it must have arrived earlier, Thomas said. It remains unclear how much ash will die, as it can take years for mature trees to succumb. But 95% could be eventually be lost in the worst case scenario, which has played out in Denmark already. “We already have lots that are mortally wounded,” Thomas said. Ash dieback will be virtually impossible to eradicate, Thomas said, as its spores can be blown more than 10 miles in the wind and survive on woodland floors for four or five years.

Flight delay may have saved siblings from tragedy in Brussels

A BIRTHDAY celebration trip to Brussels for a Killarney sister and brother was just minutes from ending in tragedy. Rachel and Gary McGowan flew out of Dublin Airport on Monday to spend in a few days in the Belgian capital, celebrating their birthdays. Miraculously, their flight was delayed for 20 minutes. It was originally meant to land about 10 minutes before one of the terrorist bombs blasted through Brussels Airport at around 8am on Monday. As Rachel, 19, and Gary, 21, approached Brussels their plane’s pilot announced the flight was being diverted to nearby Liege Airport. After they landed they saw missed calls and found frantic messages. Their Ryanair flight with remained grounded in Liege for over three hours before Rachel and Gary eventually opted to fly back to Dublin. -

+ VIEWS VIEWSFROM FROMKERRY KERRYAND ANDAROUND AROUNDTHE THEWORLD WORLD THE GOOD & THE BAD For years guidelines that stated there are two types of cholesterol; "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, thought to protect against heart disease, and "bad" low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, thought to be counterproductive to good heart health. However, a new study from Cambridge University has shown that HDL cholesterol may not be as good for us as previously thought. The study, published in the journal Science, found that people with high levels of HDL cholesterol also had an increased risk of heart disease, a direct contradiction to previous research which suggested HDL cholesterol could reduce the risk of heart disease. The researchers found that some people suffer from a rare mutation of a gene called SCARB1, which leaves them with high levels of good cholesterol. However, this increased the risk of heart disease by 80 per cent, roughly the same risk as people who smoke. One of the researchers, Professor Adam Butterworth, told the BBC : "This is significant because we had always believed that good cholesterol is associated with a lower risk of heart disease. This is one of the first studies to show that some people that have high levels of 'good' cholesterol actually have a higher risk of heart disease, so it challenges our conventional wisdom about whether 'good' cholesterol is protecting people from heart disease or not." However, while this research does question the importance of attempting to raise our levels of HDL cholesterol, other researchers still believe it can be used as a valuable tool for predicting the risk of a heart attack. Dr Tim Chico, a consultant cardiologist for the University of Sheffield, said: "We now know that it is possible to have a higher HDL level due to genetic differences and either not have a lower risk of heart disease (as seen in previous studies) or in the case of this new study, actually be at higher risk of disease, depending on the genes affected. It is worth noting that exercise both increases HDL and reduces the risk of heart disease. These results suggest that the beneficial effect of exercise is probably not caused by higher HDL levels, although more research is needed to fully understand the complex relationship between HDL and risk of heart disease." Dr Daniel Rader, from the University of Pennsylvania, added: "Eventually we may want to perform genetic testing in persons with high HDL to make sure they don't have mutations, like this one, that raise HDL but don't protect against, or may even increase, risk for heart disease." Professor Peter Weissberg, the medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: "This is an important study that sheds light on one of the major puzzles relating to cholesterol and heart disease. These new findings suggest that the way in which HDL is handled by the body is more important in determining risk of a heart attack than the levels of HDL in the blood. Only by understanding the underlying biology that links HDL-C with heart attacks can we develop new treatments to prevent them."

Belgium under attack

TWO of the suicide bombers who carried out attacks in Brussels on Tuesday have been named as brothers Khalid and Brahim el-Bakraoui, Belgian nationals. The federal prosecutor said Brahim was part of the attack at Zaventem airport that killed 11 people. Khalid struck at Maelbeek metro, where 20 people died. Two other attackers at the airport have not yet been identified. One of them died, another is on the run. Prosecutors say Brahim left a note in which he wrote of his desperation. Belgium is observing three days of national mourning. The nation held a minute's silence at midday on Wednesday. Belgium's king and queen have visited the airport and met some of the 300 people injured in the attacks. About 150 people remain in hospital, 61 in intensive care. So-called Islamic State (IS) has said it was behind the attacks.

Online campaign launched to nominate Buncrana hero for a Presidential award CALLS are growing online for the man who saved a baby from a sinking car to be given a special Presidential Award. Davitt Walsh swam out to the car off Buncrana pier as it filled with water just in time for Seán McGrotty to hand the four-month old baby through the window, moments before the car sank. Walsh swam back to the shore with baby RioghnacAnn, who was the only survivor. “The water started coming in, He just looked at me and said, he just said: ‘Save my baby’. And then I took the baby, I held it above my head and I swam back to shore. And that’s what happened,” Mr Walsh told RTÉ. Walsh has since met with Louise Daniels the baby's mother, who lost five members of her family in the tragic accident – her partner, Mr McGrotty, their two sons Mark and Evan, Louise's mother Ruth Daniels, and her sister Jodie Lee Daniels. Their funeral was held yesterday. A post by Alice Diver on Facebook calling for Walsh to be recognised for his bravery had been shared almost 17,000 times on Thursday.

Luas strikes on Easter weekend

STRIKES will halt Luas trams this weekend as Dublin marks the centenary of the Easter Rising after staff overwhelmingly rejected a pay deal drawn up last week in a bid to resolve a lengthy industrial dispute at the company. The trade union Siptu had served notice of strike action at Luas on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, as well as on four other days in April.

Kerry Museum acquires ‘buried treasure’ map

Raheen Montessori Playgroup in Headford are now taking names of children who are interested in attending the Playgroup from September 2016.

THE Kerry Museum has purchased at auction a map drawn by Sir Roger Casement showing where he reputedly buried gold and silver coins and other items near Banna Strand before he was arrested on Good Friday in 1916. A successful bid of £7,000 sterling – supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht – secured the map and an accompanying note when it was auctioned by Chorley’s of Cheltenham earlier this week. The items will now be put on display at the Kerry Museum and will form an integral part of its ‘Casement in Kerry’ exhibition which is being opened by President Michael D Higgins on April 21. The sketch map and note were drawn up by Casement while he was in custody at Scotland Yard. The ‘Plan of Rath’ suggests that £50 “in gold and silver” along with a lamp and pair of binoculars were buried “under some fern bracken

and bramble” in a fairy fort close to Currahane Moat near Ardfert. “The map drawn by Casement solves a 100–year-old mystery,” said Helen O’Carroll, curator of the Kerry Museum. “Casement hid £50 in gold and silver coins, as well as binoculars and a lamp. He drew the map while he was in custody and gave it to his interrogators so that they would send someone to find the money, which he badly needed at that stage. The map has never been seen since,” she said. “After a few days he was told that police had been sent back to the fort to search for the money but that it hadn’t been found. After his execution his solicitor, Gavan Duffy, brought it up again with Scotland Yard and in February 1917 a police search party made another effort and a report was sent back to say that they had found nothing.”

From September 2016, the ECCE Scheme will be extended to allow children to start pre-school from the age of 3 years and continue until they enter primary school. Children will be able to enrol in pre-school at three different points in the year – September, January and April.

FORD VIGNALE RANGE – UPMARKET FORD vows its upmarket Vignale range will take the fight to BMW, Audi and Jaguar, as it rolls out four new models over the next year. Vignale versions of S-Max, Edge, Mondeo five-door hatch and facelifted Kuga – made their debuts at the 2016 Geneva motor show. Promising a much more emotional Blue Oval, Ford of Europe boss Jim Farley said: "When we play to our strengths, we can compete and win in Europe even against the premium brands. Vignale is one area where we are going to broaden our appeal.” Vignale denotes more expensive flagship versions of existing models, with special shades of metallic paint, plus bespoke exterior and interior details. The signature element is a hexagonal motif, which fills out the upper grille and graces the quilted leather seats inside. Both the Edge and S-Max have 19-inch polished aluminium wheels, a Vignale-embossed aluminium applique across the S-Max's tailgate, and chrome-finish foglamps for the Edge. Mondeo and S-Max Vignale can be specified with dark alloys and foglamp surrounds, and chrome details like the window brightwork can be eliminated. That approach should give the Vignale a more contemporary feeling of luxury. An active noise cancellation system, plus SYNC3 infotainment with pinch and swipe capability on the 8inch touchscreen, are standard equipment. The Edge and S-Max Vignale will go on sale this year, with the Mondeo hatch and production Kuga due in 2017. Right: Vignale interior to challenge the luxury brands.

NICO ROSBERG beat his Mercedes teammate and world champion Lewis Hamilton to the top step of the podium in Formula One’s season opener in Melbourne last weekend, but the main talking point was a horrific crash from which McLaren driver Fernando Alonso was lucky to emerge unscathed. “I’m happy to be here, it was quite a scary crash,” Alonso reflected, after clipping the rear wheel of Esteban Gutiérrez during a failed overtaking attempt on lap 17 at 310kph. His car flipped twice and disintegrated after hitting a barrier. Alonso walked away from his wrecked McLaren Honda that in a previous era would have been fatal such is the safety in modern F1. Rosberg finished eight seconds ahead of Hamilton, with Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari completing the podium.

‘Buckle up – it could mean the difference between life and death’ ROAD collision figures released by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) have revealed that between 2009 and 2015, 17 people were killed and 47 seriously injured in collisions during the Easter Bank Holiday period. With thousands of people expected to travel this weekend, the RSA and An Garda Síochána are urging road-users to be vigilant on the road and in particular, to ensure they and their passengers are wearing seatbelts. An analysis of road fatalities for 2015 showed that one in four drivers killed (twenty) and one in three passengers killed (nine) were not wearing their seatbelt at the time of the collision. Research suggests that two out of every three people will survive a crash if they are wearing a seatbelt, meaning over twenty deaths could have been prevented last year if they had been

wearing a seatbelt. Of the nine passengers killed who were not wearing their seatbelt, six were sitting in the back of the car. Moyagh Murdock, Chief Executive of the RSA, said: “If you’re travelling this weekend, don’t take any chances – buckle up and make sure that everyone else in your car does the same. It could be the difference between life and death.” An Garda Síochána is reminding road-users that its members will be out in force over the Easter Bank Holiday period to tackle high-risk behaviour with a particular focus on non-compliance with seatbelt wearing. Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid said: "It really is incredible to believe that even in this day and age, so many drivers and passengers are not wearing their seatbelt.”

€1 Million Toyota 2000GT DANIEL CRAIG’S favourite Bond car isn’t an Aston Martin. It’s a Toyota. Craig famously said he loved the Toyota 2000GT Sean Connery drove in “You Only Live Twice” for its long Coke-bottle shape and the fresh droptop aesthetic. Investors love it for its reliability and aggressive driving style. “This is the Japanese supercar,” said Jonathan Klinger, the lead spokesman for Hagerty, a firm that insures classic and collectable cars. According to the Hagerty Price Guide, the standard version model is up 53% over the past three years, and up 170% over the past five. Toyota released the car to compete with the European cars of the time like the E-Type Jaguar, the Aston Martin GTs, and the racing Ferraris, which were roundly considered the most beautiful in the world in the late sixties. The 2000GT remained under-valued until recently because it has less of a racing pedigree than the wildly popular European counterparts — and because it really hasn’t been marketed as hard as the others. Although, as with all things, savvy collectors eventually took notice. Naturally, the values started to rise as well. Better adjust your eBay sale alerts accordingly. Sean Connery in “You Only Live Twice”.

GLENFLESK RAMBLING HOUSE TO BOOST WATER RESCUE TEAM

THE community of Glenflesk will never forget the wonderful work done by volunteers from Killarney Water Rescue when the area was hit by serious flooding last December. Now the residents have come together with an idea to raise much-needed funds for the hard-working team, with a rambling house in Glenflesk GAA Hall taking place this Easter Sunday to boost the coffers of the organisation. Rambling House organiser Neilie Moynihan likened the volunteers to the heroes of a cowboy film. “It reminded me of the way you’d see the cavalry coming over the hill to the rescue,” Neilie told the Killarney Advertiser. “The volunteers were so professional and so caring.” All are welcome to the rambling house – including singers, dancers and storytellers – and it promises to be an extremely entertaining night, from 8pm to 11pm. Derry Healy will be fear an ti at the event and the entertainers will include Councillor Maura Healy-Rae who will perform on the accordion.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Thank you to all I WOULD like to take this opportunity to thank so much everyone who has been so kind to me over the last number of days since my accident. I am so thankful to the management and staff in Cork University Hospital for their great care since Sunday and also to the Gardaí who were so good to me and my family on Sunday night. I was released on Tuesday from Cork University Hospital and the extent of my injuries is not too serious (just a few fractured ribs), but I will just have to take it easy for a number of days. Thanks again so much to everyone who has been so kind to me and I would also like to say my thoughts and prayers are with the McGrotty and Daniels family after their tragedy and to the people of Brussels, may God bless them all. Michael Healy-Rae, TD, Kilgarvan

Shock and sadness at tragic loss of life in Brussels AS THE leader of the Fine Gael delegation in the European Parliament, I would like to express my shock and sadness at the tragic loss of life in the terrorist attacks carried out at Brussels airport and on the city's metro system on Tuesday morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims who have lost their lives and their families who will be devastated. Many people have been injured in these attacks and will be totally traumatised. I condemn the terrorist attacks. Now is a time for solidarity in Belgium and across Europe. I advise any Irish citizens in Brussels to stay safe and follow the guidance of the authorities. Looking dapper in 1972. Patsy O'Carroll (nee O'Keeffe), Dan Buckley and Maisie O'Sullivan.

Infrastructure and Construction Minister required to sustain and spread economic recovery THE most important construction project in Ireland is currently underway as the political parties try to form a Government. Whilst the composition of the future Government is still unknown, it’s certain that whoever is in Government will struggle to deliver on their promises relating to housing, infrastructure, job creation and regional development. The reason: construction companies will struggle to gear up quickly enough to build the commercial, residential and infrastructural projects required to deliver on these promises due to spiralling costs. A Minister for Infrastructure and Construction must be appointed in the next Cabinet with the task of coordinating actions that allow companies to build es-

sential housing and infrastructural projects. This is critical to ensure that the needs of the Irish economy and citizens are met in the coming years. After the political speed-dating is finished, the new Government will inevitably turn to the construction sector to deliver. For example, Fine Gael promise to deliver 25,000 new homes annually by 2021. Fianna Fáil promised 105,000 units by 2021, Labour 44,000 affordable units. However, across the economy, construction activity is lower than required to sustain our economy and house our people. There are examples of this everywhere, not just in relation to housing: PWC recently forecast a significant shortfall in com-

mercial property in Dublin that could see rent approach 2007 levels if unaddressed The EU Commission last week stated “the new capital programme for the next government term will, even at its maximum point, leave spending one third lower than what it calls the already depressed EU average.” Tom Parlon, Director General, Construction Industry Federation, Via email

Killarney brothers enjoy trip to Old Trafford

A Legion of Memories

KILLARNEY brothers Cameron and Cormac Rowe returned this week after a memorable trip to Old Trafford. Both rival supporters of Manchester United and Liverpool, they enjoyed the UEFA Europa League Round-of-16 game on St Patrick’s Day in which their teams tied in a 1-1 draw. However, Liverpool won 1-3 on aggregate so it was Cameron who was the happier on the journey home!

JUSTIN KIDNEY was one of the great dedicated officers of Killarney Legion GAA Club. Serving as secretary and PRO for many years, Justin was also a county and East Kerry Board delegate. When Killarney won the Kerry County Championship in 1973 Justin, a dentist by trade, was the Killarney secretary. Here he is wearing the Killarney tie and crest presented to the team by the Killarney Urban Council following a civic reception to honour the victory. Their son Joseph also wore the green and white.

4th anniversary Kenny

In loving memory of Emily and Alanna Kelly 22nd March 2012. If I could take a minute out of each and every day, To hold my girls close to my heart and kiss their tears away. If I could take a minute out of each and every week, To play with blocks and peek-a-box, tag or hide and seek. If I could take a minute out of any span of time, I’d never waste a second of the pleasures that were mine. If they could crawl upon my knee and lay their sleepy head, Upon my shoulder tenderly and dream of gingerbread. I’d spend my time in total bliss and watch our daughters grow, From babyhood, to childhood, knowing all there is to know. If I could stop my aching heart and put my mind asleep, If I could stop the flow of tears that are always on my cheek. I only need a minute, Lord, I know they are safe with you, But there’s something real important that I had no time to do. If you could do it for me Lord, here’s a message they should know, Tell them that we love them and we’ll never let them go. Love you always and forever Mom, Dad, your brothers Darragh, Jayden and Odhran. xx

In loving memory of Patrick (P.J) O’ Sullivan, “Killarney Villa”, Lissivigeen, Killarney who died on 26th March 2015.

Mr. Denis Casey Ballinamanagh, Kilcummin Killarney, Co. Kerry Who died 1st March 2015.

On this, Patrick’s first anniversary, his wife Rose, son Cathal, daughter Briet, brothers and extended family would like to express our gratitude for the kindness and support shown to Patrick and our family, both during his illness and since his passing. We would like to thank the teams of medical and care professionals that helped Patrick during his illness; Dr. Helena Moore and Neurology Clinical Nurse Maire Hayes, Dr Patricia Sheehan and the Palliative Care team, the staff of the Bon Secours, the public health nurses, the physiotherapy team, Dr. Quirke and the exceptional staff at Trant’s pharmacy. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who called to the house, attended the removal and the funeral Mass. Thank you to our relatives, neighbours and friends for your many cards, words and letters of support and comfort at the time and since. We would like to thank those who assisted with traffic management while Patrick reposed at home. To Patrick’s former colleagues at St Finan’s, we thank you for the respectful and noble Guard afforded to him. Our sincerest gratitude to O’ Shea’s Funeral Directors and staff for their professionalism, but also for the great care and kindness they showed Patrick and our family. Also thank you to everyone involved in preparing Patrick’s final resting place at Aghadoe. Special thanks to Fr. Niall Howard who provided a very personal and insightful homily and much needed comfort to our family. Thanks also to Fr. Michael O’Doherty who concelebrated at the funeral Mass and to St Mary Cathedral’s choir. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this as a token of our gratitude and deep appreciation. For all who took time to honour Patrick, please remember that the memories of your kindness will forever remain in our hearts and Mass has been offered for your intentions.

On the first Anniversary of Denis’s death we, Denis’s family, would like to thank sincerely all those who sympathised, helped and supported us on our sad loss. We would especially like to thank all the relatives and neighbours who assisted with food and catering at the house and were of great assistance to us at that difficult time. In loving memory of our dear father Timothy (Thade) Daly, late of Shronedraugh, Headford, who died 22nd March 2002. R.I.P. Since you went away, it seems, You’re nearer than before, We cannot touch your hand and yet, You’re with us more and more. And just as long as memory lives, For you just cannot die, For in our hearts you’re living still, As passing years go by. Always remembered by your loving sons Tim, Conor, daughters Marian, Maireád, and Regina, sons-in-law Donal, Barth and Tadhg and grandchildren.

in memoriam 1st anniversary McCarthy

In loving memory of Denis (Denzo) McCarthy late of 5 Mangerton View, Killarney who died on the 31st March 2015. Grandad The rolling stream of life goes on But still the vacant chair Recalls the love, the voice, the smile Of the one who once sat there. Dad God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So He put His arms around you And whispered come to me. With tearful eyes we watched you And saw you pass away And although we loved you dearly We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating Hard working hands at rest God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Sadly missed by your daughter Linda, son-in-law Brian and granddaughters Clionagh and Chloe.

So powerful are you in obtaining every need of body and soul our Holy Mother Church proclaims you a “prodigy of miracles, the greatest Saint of modern times.” Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of “spending Heaven doing upon earth...of letting fall from Heaven a shower of Roses”. Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Men’s

Open Day, Killeen course 17/03/2016. Men’s Captain Liam Hartnett was in the second group to tee off in the first “Open Day” competition of 2016, played on St. Patrick’s Day, at 7.20 a.m. on Thursday the 17th March, which had a huge turnout of over 120 competitors, and a good proportion of those competing were from outside courses, such was the enthusiasm to get to play Killeen, and to see at first hand some of the course repairs and improvements undertaken by our Course Manager Enda Murphy and his team over the last three months or so, which were done as and when weather conditions allowed. The general consensus of opinion was indeed most positive which is most gratifying to all of those concerned in those repairs and improvements which will greatly enhance playing conditions on the course in the fullness of time, and which we will enjoy for many years to come when they have all bedded down. Liam said that It was great to be back on Killeen course once again, and that we can now look forward to getting our competition schedule “back on track” for the remainder of the year. The competition results are as follows, and as it was an open competition then there were only three prize-winners. 1st Eddie Coleman with 42 points, playing off 12 handicap. 2nd Alan Flannery with 41 points playing off 19 handicap. 3rd Eoin O’Donoghue with 40 points (back nine) playing off 9 handicap. Apart from the winner, our own Eddie Coleman, with a great score of 42 points the next most notable score was by Alan Flannery who is a brother of our Club Secretary/Manager Cormac Flannery, and who is a member of Ceann Sibheal, who was second with 41 points and had a most impressive 24 points on the back nine holes. Standard Scratch was not in play due to the temporary green on the 8th hole, which was brought about by the current up-grading of the water hazard at the greenside on that hole. 25 of those who competed played to, or bettered their handicap, and this was a fair testament to the condition of the course which had undertaken such a ferocious battering in the winter storms which started with Clodagh, on the 28th of November last, followed by Desmond, Eva, Frank, Gertrude, Henry, Imogen, and finally with Jake, which was as recent as the 2nd of March. Club Foursomes qualifier, on “Killeen” on Easter Sunday the 27th of March. Next competition will be the “qualifier” for our Club Foursomes competition, with the top 31 teams qualifying to join our Club Captain and his partner in the knock out stages of the competition. Entry for this competition will be via the Club on-line system, with times running from 7.30am to 2.30pm. Open Competition “Mahony’s Point” Easter Monday, the 28th of March. The next Club open competition will take place on Mahony’s Point Easter Monday, the 28th of March, with the time-sheet at the reception at the Clubhouse, with times running from 8.00am to 2.30pm. Club website, Men’s section, upgrade. Liam Hartnett also wishes to advise all members that a very substantial up-

grade of the website for the “Men’s Club” section has recently been undertaken by Men’s Club Committee member, and our Handicap Secretary James Curran, James has spearheaded and single handedly undertaken the task of this upgrade, the result of which can be very easily seen with a much easier and more user-friendly and informative website now in place, than what was there heretofore. James himself stresses that it is still a “work-in-progress”, but a cursory viewing by all members, which Liam strongly encourages, will convince everyone that what James has already put in place is just fantastic, and he is to be complimented on his initiative, expertise and enthusiasm for what he has already put in place. Lackabane course voting option deadline 25th of March. Please remember to get your vote in for your choice for one of the three options which are currently under consideration for the “new” layout for the 9 hole course on Lackabane, which has now been set for Friday the 25th of March, you were previously advised of it, as being the 31st of March via the Men’s Club facebook page and via previous notifications as published by the “Killarney Advertiser”.

Juvenile News U12 Girls Div II Killarney Cougars 35 St Bridgets 21 A strong display by Killarney Cougars as they hosted the girls from Currow at the Pres Gym in the final league game for both sides and a very entertaining game saw Cougars finish with a big scoring burst in the final quarter to take the points. Cougars finished comfortable winners with a slightly flattering winning margin despite a great effort by St Bridgets that kept them in contention until the closing minutes of what was a very competitive game. U14 Girls Div II Killarney Cougars 30 Tralee Imperials 20 A great game at the Pres Gym between two well matched sides that had little to separate them until the closing minutes.

killarney notes U11 Boys Div I Killarney Cougars 21 Bobcats 28 A great game saw the League Leaders coming to Killarney in their final game to get the win that would see them go the season unbeaten in both the league and cup and the Bobcats duly obliged despite a determined effort by Cougars who contributed to a good game. Cork Open U12 Boys Killarney Cougars U12 Boys were up and on the road at 7am last Saturday morning as they set off to the Parochial Hall Cork and came through a tough schedule to make through to the Top four. Cougars were the opening game of the day and came out all fired up for their first game on the courts in Cork as they dominated to take the opening game scoring a season high 54pts to brush aside the challenge Carrig na bhfear Rebels. Cougars came through the group stages and after a thrilling game with Ballincollig which needed overtime Cougars came through to meet undefeated Cork Champions Blue Demons. The Demons playing on their home court with good support were in top form but Cougars took the early lead and surprised the home side in a fiery opening quarter with the sides tied 14-14 at the end of the quarter with Cian Doyle, Rian Colleran and Patrick Lyons in top form for Cougars. The sides went basket for basket before the home side finally got on top in the late in the second quarter to finish the quarter ahead 26-20. Cougars struggled through the early stages of the second half but staged a recovery to finish well but Demons once ahead were hard to catch as they finished winners 43-38 after a very entertaining game. Killarney Swimming Club

Well done to all our swimmers who took part in the “B” gala in Tralee on Saturday the 19th of March. We are now moving into the business end of the swimming calendar with swimmers from all clubs reaching their peak of fitness, making it far more difficult to win medals. Despite this, Killarney swimmers were the big achievers on the day, winning nearly a third of the medals on offer. Congratulations Killarney! Boys under 11 – Ross O’Leary had a marvelous day out, showing true class to take gold in the 100 metres backstroke and the 200 metres Individual Medley and silver in the 200 metres freestyle and the 100 metres breaststroke. Girls under 13 – Once again, Saibh O’Brien was in scintillating form winning gold medals in the 100 metres backstroke and the 100 metres freestyle and a silver medal in the 200 metres freestyle. Aisling Coffey, new to this category, showed some serious potential seizing silver in the 100 metres butterfly and bronze in the 200 metres freestyle. Boys under 13 – Charles O’Brien gave us a masterclass in style winning gold in the 100 metres backstroke, gold 100 metres breaststroke and silver in the 200 metres Individual Medley. Meanwhile, Ethan O’Neill took a fine bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke, in what was a very competitive section. Girls under 15 – In this category, two Killarney girls stood out with Emer Dineen winning a well-deserved bronze in the 100 metres butterfly and Meadbh O’Sullivan, showing a return on all the hard training by winning bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke. Boys under 15 – Sean Farndon was really up for a fight on the day and literally left other swimmers in his wake to take gold in the 200 metres Individual Medley, silver in the 100 metres breaststroke and yet another silver in the 100 metres freestyle. However, the biggest prize of all was that Sean made his “A” grade times on the day! Sean now moves out of “B” gala competition - competitors at “A” galas can only tremble. Paul O’Leary was another man on fire winning gold in the 100 metres breaststroke, silver in the 100 metres backstroke, silver in the 200 metres Individual Medley and a bronze in the 200 metres freestyle. Well done, Paul. Girls over 16 – Janine O’Connor once again swept the board in this category winning gold in the 200 metres freestyle, gold in the 100 metres backstroke, gold in the 200 metres Individual Medley and silver in the 100 metres breaststroke. With some superb tumble-turns and speed off the blocks, Emma Quirke took silver in the 200 metres freestyle, silver in the 100 metres backstroke, bronze in the 200 metres Individual Medley and bronze in the 100 metres breaststroke. Certainly a swimmer to watch out for in upcoming galas. Relays – In the girls under 12 freestyle relay event, the Killarney team of Aisling Coffey, Maura O’Keeffe, Ellen O’Connor and Saibh O’Brien were, quite simply, a force of nature. Taking the lead from the moment the race started, they never lost that advantage and by the time Saibh O’Brien took to the

Well done, girls and particular congratulations to Saibh O’Brien who also made her “A” grade times and moves out of “B” galas. While this will be a huge loss for this brilliant young relay team, the search for a replacement has begun already with the coaches tight lipped on potential candidates! Unofficially, we understand that assessments will continue until May when the new relay team will be announced. Thanks to our coaches, Cathal O’Brien and Leontia Doody, who gave huge support and encouragement to all swimmers on the day and to our team manager, Samantha O’Connor who, as always, was there to deal with all trials and tribulations as they arose. Thanks also to all parents for traveling and for assisting in the timekeeping down on deck.

Just to say well done to our U11 Mixed Basketball panel who took part in the County finals in Castleisland last Sunday. They started out playing a strong Currow team in their first game which ended up a close game won by 2 points but unfortunately their second game against Glenflesk didn’t go their way... This left us with a decisive match against the actual winners on the day ‘ Castleisland’. The result in losing this game meant that we couldn’t go any further in the competition. A great bunch of children who we would like to thank very much for taking part... better things ahead for them all. Leah Daly, Orla Cronin, Tara Jones, Grace Murphy, Leah Murphy, Shane Daly, David McCarthy, Padraig Moynihan and James Twomey. Killarney Athletic

Results: Denny Premier A Killarney Athletic 1-3 Castleisland With the score 0-0 at half time Athletic fancied their chances of a home win. However Castleisland raced into a 3-0 lead early in the second half. Adam Moynihan scored a spectacular free kick to give our side hope but unfortunately it finished in defeat. U15 Killarney Athletic 1-0 Ballyhar Dynamos For the second time this season Athletic defeated Ballyhar Dynamos 1-0 and the visitors certainly deserved at least parity in both fixtures. On a day when Athletic struggled to find any fluency this was a result born out of hard work and perseverance. The introduction of Ian Prendergast to centre midfield added some much needed energy in that sector. While the home sides defense repelled a series of corners, chances at the other end were few and far between. But with the destination of valuable league points in the balance it was Prendergast who passed the ball to the corner of the Ballyhar net to settle the issue. The week in sport | Deadline Tuesday 5.30pm | Sports Editor Eamonn Fitzgerald

VITAL POINTS AT STAKE AS KERRY TRAVEL TO MONAGHAN IN AFL THERE are vital Allianz Football League points at stake on Easter Sunday next when Kerry travel to Clones to take on Monaghan. Kerry of course had a slow start to the League when going down to both Dublin and Roscommon, but they then picked themselves up to put a three game winning streak together that has them currently in a semi-final spot in the League table on six points. To maintain that position they need both points on Sunday as their opponents Monaghan are just two points behind on 4 points as are Cork who are likely to gather both points on offer against Down. Just when Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s longterm injuries are beginning to ease with the return to training of both Michael and Paul Geaney and also Killian Young, Tommy Walsh and David Moran who have missed the last few games due to knocks picked up in the League, comes the news that team captain Bryan Sheehan has picked up a hand injury the extent of which was due to be clearer following a visit to a specialist on Tuesday of this week. That injury incidentally was picked up at the throw in at the start of the Mayo game. The Caherciveen man, Anthony Maher and James O’Donoghue are the three remaining players on

the injury list. Of course these absences mean that other players on the panel are getting their chance to impress the selectors and some are doing just that. Kerry and Monaghan have only met ten times previously in the League with Kerry winning six of those and Monaghan winning four and Kerry followers will need little reminding that the last of those Monaghan victories came last season in Austin Stack Park when the Farney men prevailed by 1-11 to 0-10. Monaghan got off to a good start in the League defeating Roscommon and Down but since then they have had to give second best to Dublin, Mayo and Cork; however on their day they are capable of mixing it with the best. SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER The final place in the Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship draw is up for grabs at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Friday evening next (7.30pm) when St Brendan’s and Shannon Rangers meet in the Senior Football Championship Qualifier. These two sides were deemed to be the lowest of the divisional sides when results were taken into account over the last five years and so they play off to decide who goes through to the Championship draw proper.

Getting a suitable date this year for the game, the first of such playoffs, was always going to be difficult but from this year’s championship on, it is intended to fix such games in conjunction with the latter rounds of the championship. Picking a winner for the Good Friday clash is hardly going to be an easy task and it boils down to whoever has the most preparation done in the time available. KERRY UNDER-21S ADVANCE TO MUNSTER FINAL The Kerry Under 21 team advanced to the Munster Final for the first time since 2012 and a meeting with old rivals Cork following a semi final victory over Limerick on Wednesday evening last (1-14 to 2-8). It was a game that hung in the balance right up to two minutes from the end of the allotted five minutes of injury time before two late Kerry points finally killed off the Shannonsiders. A feature of the game was the point scoring of Killian Spillane from play – the Templenoe player helped himself to five altogether from all angles and distances. This is still a very young Kerry side and while the team contains five of the side defeated by Cork in last year’s semi final – Brian Ó Beagaloich, Cathal Ó Lúing, Barry O’Sullivan, Micheál Burns and Jack Savage – ten of the side were Minors in

either 2014 or 2015. CREDIT UNION SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE GETS UNDERWAY The Credit Union Senior Football League got underway on Sunday last in glorious Spring sunshine with 29 games played in all. Pride of place went to the meeting of the two Division 1 heavyweights, Dr Crokes and Austin Stacks who met in a game that doubled up as the 2015 Division 1 final and Dr Crokes it was who were crowned Credit Union Senior Football League Division 1 champions for 2015 when they swept away the challenge of the 2014 champions. Dr Crokes captain Eoin Brosnan received the newly refurbished Division 1 Shield from County PRO John O’Leary and Brian Looney of Dr Crokes received the Credit Union Man of the Match award from Mary O’Shea, Treasurer Chapter 23 Irish League of Credit Unions. Elsewhere, All Ireland Junior Champions, Templenoe, who were making their debut in Division 1, got their campaign off to a flying start with victory over John Mitchels and another promoted side, Desmonds, defeated Kilcummin. Paul Geaney impressed in Dingle’s surprise win over Legion in a low-scoring game in Derreen.

County League 2016 Round 1 and 2015 League Final Even though we eventually won this game by six points, we got a big scare at the three quarter stage when Austin Stacks ran through us for 2-1 to leave just one point between the teams. We did however close it out in the last quarter to add another County League Division 1 title to our collection. Our best players on the day were Eoin Brosnan, Fionn Fitzgerald, Mike Milner, Brian Looney, Colm Cooper and Daithí Casey. Juvenile Hurling The U14 hurlers got their Co. League - Division 2 campaign underway on Saturday evening last against Lixnaw at home. This Lixnaw side were a very strong team and could contend very well in Division 1. While we suffered a heavy defeat, our young hurlers didn’t give up at any stage and kept battling, performing very well as a team and tagging on well-deserved scores in the second half. On Friday, 25th March, we travel to Kilmoyley to play the home side in Round 2. U16 Hurling The U16’s also got their Co. League underway this past weekend with a home game against Ballyduff. While we put up a good performance, Ballyduff got away with the win. Our U16’s will also travel to Kilmoyley from

MINOR FOOTBALL Kilcummin 4-8 Milltown/ Castlemaine 5-6. Kilcummin will consider themselves unlucky to lose this game in the final minutes but will be happy with the commitment and some fine scores. Ethan McGrath contributed two goals from centre forward while Sean O’Leary and James Nagle also found the back of the Milltown net. Next game is away to Finuge on Saturday 26th at 4pm. SENIOR FOOTBALL CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE DIVISION 1 Castleisland Desmonds 0-13 Kilcummin 0-10. Losing to Desmonds on Sunday our supporters will be disappointed that the team did not do itself justice on the day but will be concerned that we finished the game with just thirteen men with Kevin McCarthy and Kelvin Teahan being dismissed in the second half. On the positive side despite being a numerical disadvantage we showed great resilience and but for the crossbar and a number of goal line clearances by the hosts we could have got a deserved draw. In the end we left pointless and now face Dr Crokes in Kilcummin this weekend in Round 2. Desmond’s overall physical advantage and the skills of Tomas Hickey in particular were the difference on the day but players like Sean Brosnan, Damien O’Leary, Chris O’Leary and Kieran Murphy will take some solace from their performances.

Legion

COUNTY LEAGUE: LEGION 0-7 DINGLE 0-8 Our seniors opened their County League campaign in Derreen on Sunday afternoon and unfortunately it was the visitors who walked away with the spoils, despite playing the majority of the game a man down. New sponsorship and jersey launch at Dr Crokes THE Dr Crokes GAA Club has welcomed on board Patrick O’Sullivan and Maurice Regan who have joined forces to give the club a boost as it starts its new football season. Kerry County Board chairman Patrick O’Sullivan and his family have been steeped in the Dr Crokes club for quite a number of years. Patrick has previously served as club chairman, his wife Frances is the current club registrar, while Deborah Ann, Patrick’s sister, looks after the club shop. Patrick’s mother, Bridie, has been also been involved within the club over the years, while Eddie, Patrick’s dad, has not only been a great supporter of the club for many years, he has also managed and been a selector with many underage and adult teams in the Crokes. The latest member of the family to get the managerial bug is Patrick’s brother, Edmund, who has been doing tremendous work as its minor team manager for the last few years. Kerry native Maurice Regan, a successful businessman based in New York, is president and CEO of construction giant JT Magen & Company. Maurice is a good friend of Patrick’s, and is a long-time supporter of the Dr Crokes. Dr Crokes acknowledged the generous sponsorship provided by the INEC/Gleneagle/Scotts over the past six years and its pleased to note the INEC/Gleneagle/ Scotts will continue to be an associate sponsor. “Dr Crokes were delighted to display the INEC/Gleneagle/Scotts logos. During these years our senior team won four senior county championships in a row, competed in four Munster senior club finals winning three Munster titles in a row and competed in three All-Ireland senior club semi-finals,” said club chairperson Denis Coleman.

There are about 50 members from all age groups and walks of life. And if you would like to consider joining the club, come and meet the members at the Killarney Heights Hotel.
