Killarney’s Celebration of Irish American Friendship PAGESIX

History will tell you what happened but a song will tell you how it felt

An events-filled programme of quality entertainment has been lined up for the Celebration of Irish American Friendship in Killarney with great, must-see attractions planned from July 3 to July 5.

The centuries-old bonds that exist between Ireland and America will be appropriately acknowledged through a variety of entertainment events with the undoubted highlight being a gala parade through the streets, on the evening of Thursday, July 4th.

It will feature spectacular custom-built floats, marching bands, colourful cheerleaders, the rumble of power-packed motorbikes and a whole host of fun-loving and much-loved Disney characters, fairytale princesses and so much more. With the 100-year celebration of the opening of Killarney National Park scheduled for 2032, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce last year initiated a special lead-in programme to mark the occasion and to celebrate the generosity of the Bourn-Vincent and McShain families who gifted much of the park to the nation and the people. That historic and valued relationship will be to the fore during the course of this

year’s festival with the captivating story of John McShain to be told, through poetry, music and song, in a special hourlong production at the Anam Arts and Cultural Centre prior to the big parade. Co-produced by the multi-talented Noel Patrick O’Sullivan and Fiona Crowley, it will tell the McShain story through the thought-provoking poetry of Tim Buckley, the musical talents of Tony O’Flaherty and Miriam O’Sullivan and the voice of Mary Culloty O’Sullivan with

the detailed research into the life of the McShain family conducted by Rachel Kelleher of the NPWS.

“History will tell you what happened but a song will tell you how it felt,” Noel Patrick O’Sullivan remarked.

This year also there will be an opportunity to remember the estimated six million Irish people who emigrated to the US since 1820, whose descendants now proudly describe themselves as Irish-American, and their story will be

told in an engaging public lecture in the appropriate setting of Killarney House –the former McShain residence – on the evening of Wednesday, July 3rd.

The topic will be Kerry Emigration to the US 1820-1920 and the special guest will be vastly experienced genealogist and author Kay Caball.

The fun-filled festivities on July 4th will include a fabulous kids zone on the grounds of St Mary’s Church of Ireland with a whole variety of free activities, including face painting, balloon and art games and an energetic open air kiddies’ disco.

The Celebration of Irish American Friendship schedule will also include a town centre family-friendly, interactive drum experience, lively DJ sounds on Main Street, a sensational Great Gatsby routine with dazzling dancers and an open air live brass band performance on the streets to fill the mid-summer air with great sounds.

Following the big parade on Thursday, July 4th there will be a rousing street party with hugely popular local band Truly Diverse providing the music and everybody is being invited to join in what will be a beat on the street with a stamp of trademark Killarney quality.

Tributes to Michael Doyle, founder of the Kerry Way

There was sadness in the air this week with the news of the passing of Michael Doyle of Fossa.

Michael was not just one of the founding members of the original Kerry Way Committee, but also a pillar of strength and

dedication.

A keen environmentalist, he fronted a campaign that lasted over 25 years to have Killarney National Park extended to the parish of Fossa and his dream was finally realised in that regard when the hugely popular Fossa Way walkway and cycle route was developed.

Michael was most familiar with the town and its needs through his dedicated career as a senior official in Killarney Post Office where he worked for 40 years before retiring in 1995. In that role he became an unofficial ambassador for the town given his daily interactions with so many people

A lifelong horseracing enthusiast, Michael was a progressive and dynamic secretary/manager of Killarney Racecourse from 1992 to 2003 and he served as deputy senior steward of the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee having been appointed by the National Hunt Steeplechase Committee in Dublin.

Norman Reidy, Chairman, Kerry Way Committee, said:

“To his family, friends, the local Fossa community, Killarney Race Course, where he worked so tirelessly and with such fervour. His loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing this gentleman.

“Michael’s spirit and energy were infectious, and his contributions to our committee and the wider community were invaluable. His absence will be profoundly felt, but his legacy will continue to inspire us.

“In these sorrowful times, we stand together to celebrate Michael’s life. He will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on now in the work he achieved with others, and the legacy of other trails near Fossa and along the remarkable Kerry Way.”

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce paid a warm tribute to Michael with the business organisation saying the Fossa man had a great vision of how Killarney and its environs should progress.

A statement of condolence issued by Chamber co-presidents, Johnny McGuire

and Pádraig Treacy said: “Michael’s expertise and contacts proved invaluable when dealing with landowners and other key stakeholders.

“He opened many doors that led to very fruitful negotiations and his organisational skills and powers of persuasion were incredible,” the Chamber statement said. Michael’s long-time involvement in the Fossa Tidy Towns group was also acknowledged. He had great pride in his home parish and he loved to participate in the weekly clean-up projects.

“Michael Doyle worked tirelessly all his life to create a better community and he did everything on a voluntary basis and with a very generous hear and giving spirit. He will be a huge loss to Fossa and to Killarney,” the Chamber added. He is survived by his wife Bridie, son Jim, daughters Nessa, Siobhán, Niamh, Sheena and Caoimhe, daughters-in-law, sonsin-law, grandchildren and his extended family.

Muckross Lottery goes online

Muckross Community Association has announced the launch of its new online facility for playing the Muckross Lottery.

The Muckross Lottery community fundraiser has operated since 1995, raising thousands of euro for the benefit of local community groups and bodies including Loughquittane National School, Muckross ICA and Muckross Rowing Club among others.

Over the years, countless prize winners have also benefited in the share of jackpot and Match 3 prize wins.

The first Muckross Lottery draw was held in the summer of 1995, a year which also saw the opening of the Muckross Community Centre.

At the time, the lottery draw was a first of its kind in Killarney and was to set a fine example for the many other sports club and community lotteries that were later established in the town.

The community fundraiser has continued to be a vital support, initially securing the completion of the Muckross Community Centre and over time generating funds for the development of school, community and sporting facilities in the Muckross area.

Since 1995, the lottery has been sustained by the unwavering commitment of local sellers and a dedicated committee within the community association.

A number of the lottery’s founding members continue to sell weekly tickets to this day in support of local causes.

In a move with the times and ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Muckross Lottery, the association is now building for the future and launching its new online lottery facility.

Ahead of the online launch this month,

Birds Euroshow signals the start of summer

It is a sure sign that summer is here. On Thursday this week – the longest day of the year - Bird’s Amusements took up residency in the Fair Hill car park.

Ireland’s largest travelling fun fair has (pandemic aside) never missed a summer in Killarney since their first visit in 1937.

“Bird’s Euroshow funfair has arrived, that means summer is here in Killarney and it’s time for some fun for all the family,” said Laurie Bird. New for this year is a revised opening times.

The fair will open from 5 pm until 10 pm Monday to Friday.

Opening times are extended on weekend and the August Bank Holiday Monday (August 5) from 2pm until 10pm. The popular fair will run in Killarney until August 6 before deparing on its traditional county-wide tour.

The funfair will visit Puck Fair in Killorglin from August 10 to 12. Next stop is the Rose of Tralee International Festival before concluding the tour at the Listowel Harvest Festival in September.

the Association has collaborated with Irish company ClubForce, a leading provider of online lottery systems, to develop the secure online system.

It is hoped the new online facility will generate new lottery sales, extend the lottery’s reach to those living abroad and sustain the community fundraiser long into the future.

Existing lottery supporters who avail of the online option can also enjoy the benefits of new features including a weekly results email, ticket auto renewal and access to ticket purchase history. The Association are also keen to highlight that existing hard copy tickets will continue to be available and sold as normal.

The Community Association is seeking the support of all residents of the Muckross area and all those with a connection to the community, to spread the word and get behind the new online lottery.

Online tickets can now be purchased ahead of the weekly draws on June 22, June 29 and throughout July.

The jackpot for June 22 stands at €5,050 with a rollover each week if the jackpot is not won. Online lottery tickets can be purchased each week (3 tickets for €5).

A single €2 ticket can also be purchased for multiple draws. The lottery’s annual ‘green’ ticket is also available online for €100 and continues to include two free draws.

Athletics Club launches fundraiser to expand facilities

Killarney Valley Athletics Club has launched a fundraiser to build a pole fault and runway at its New Road facility. The club’s five national-level pole-vaulters must travel great distances to train each week.

Killarney Valley Athletics Club want to reverse that trend so its athletes can train locally and have launched a GoodFundMe campaign to raise the €10,000 required to upgrade the facilites at its track and filed venue.

Jordan Lee features in video series documenting ‘The Human Behind the Athlete’

Jordan Lee features in the latest campaign from PTSB, title sponsor of both the Irish Olympic and Irish Paralympic teams. The video content series delves into what it means to support the human behind the athlete.

Following on from the launch of the bank’s Team Ireland TV ad campaign in February, the video content series features four of PTSB’s Olympic and Paralympic Athlete Ambassadors, as they open up and let the viewer see the more human side of their journey towards competing on the world stage this summer in Paris.

From incredible family support to overcoming adversity, the campaign offers an intimate look at what helps these athletes

achieve extraordinary results.

The series kicks off with High Jumper and Tokyo Paralympian Jordan Lee.

For Jordan, his sporting career did not begin with high jump. Inspired by his father, he was a successful basketball player, making history as the first one-handed player in the world to represent his country at international level.

Through his storytelling, he gives an insight into the judgement he faced from an early age, a memory that still fuels his determination. The early adversity he faced led to a disciplined routine, waking up at 6am to train, driven by the desire to prove sceptics wrong.

“We have financed and built our ‘Oasis of Athletics’ with years of volunteer fundraising. We now have athletes in many Track and Field disciplines including five national level pole-vaulters who have to travel 100s of kilometres each week to train,” said a club spokesperson. “So we are now hoping to finalise our own pole-vault and are on the final stages with the runway build next. Help us

get this done so that our flock of vaulters can grow and more can enjoy the many disciplines of Track and Field.”

"Muckross 60" Scholarships Announced

Director General of the National Parks and Wildlife Service Niall O Donnchú this week announced the inaugural ‘Muckross 60’ nature scholarships to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the opening of Muckross House and Gardens to the public.

The scholarships will be funded and managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Niall O Donnchú said, “Killarney and Muckross have a very special place in Ireland's heritage legacy, and such beautiful gems need constant care, nurturing and indeed protecting by future generations. In supporting these third level scholarships, the NPWS is building the knowledge base of the future to assist those generations in continuing to realise the full beauty and nature value of the very unique Muckross House and Gardens and Killarney National Park.”

Mr O Donnchú added: “Killarney has a long history of scholarship, research and frontier work on nature and that continues to this day in the management of Killarney National Park and Muckross House and Gardens. The endowment of these annual scholarships is a very clear attestation that this crucial work continues to be undertaken across our national park system and especially here in Killarney and Muckross. This work has been pioneering in respect of wildlife and nature research and indeed the reintroduction of endangered species and the discovery, even this year, of more."

Minister for Education and Kerry T.D.

Norma Foley also welcomed new scholarships to mark the 60th anniversary of Muckross House.

“Muckross House is one of the jewels in the crown of Kerry tourism and received almost one million visitors last year. These scholarships will further add to our understanding of this outstanding part of our national heritage,” she said. Muckross House was built by the Herbert family, who were local landlords. They became very wealthy during the 18th century due to the working of the copper mines on the Muckross Peninsula. They commenced the building of the present Muckross House in 1839. It was completed in 1843 at cost of £30,000, just two years prior to the Great Irish Famine. The Herbert family hosted the visit of Queen Victoria to Muckross House in 1861 but later got into financial difficulties and lost the house in 1897.

It was then bought by Lord Ardilaun, a member of the Guinness family. He in turn sold it in 1911 to William Bowers Bourn, a wealthy Californian gold miner. Bowers Bourn gave it to his daughter Maud as a wedding gift when she married Arthur Rose Vincent, an Irish barrister who later became a Senator.

After Maude died from pneumonia in 1929, Arthur Rose Vincent decided to donate Muckross house to the Irish nation as a memorial to his wife. Muckross House was transferred to the state in 1932 with its 11,000 acre estate and became Ireland’s first National Park in 1933.

The park and gardens were opened to the public but the house remained closed until 1964. It was reopened as a folk museum on June 14, 1964 following a campaign by people in Killarney.

Nordic travel journalists find inspiration in Killarney

Travel journalists from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland have been visiting Killarney as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland.

The journalists – who have a combined audience of over 630,000 readers across the Nordic countries – are here to experience the area’s spectacular scenery, rich culture and heritage, as well as our fantastic food offering.

They’re also finding out about environmentally friendly initiatives, including the introduction of the Killarney Coffee Cup Project last summer, which saw Killarney become the first town in Ireland to phase out single-use coffee cups.

The articles and content the journalists produce will inspire their followers and readers to put Kerry and Ireland on their holiday ‘wish-list’.

The group has been following an action-packed itinerary which included

meeting with Ciara Treacy of the Killarney Park Hotel to discuss the Killarney Coffee Cup Project, a walking tour of Killarney, a guided tour of Killarney House, a kayaking lesson with Star Outdoors Kenmare and a seaweed walk with Atlantic Irish Seaweed on Derrynane Beach.

They also visited Skellig Michael and enjoyed a guided e-bike tour of Valentia Island with South Kerry Cycles and a jaunting car experience in Killarney.

Emer Mac Diarmada, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for the Nordic Region, said: “Tourism Ireland was delighted to invite this group of influential Nordic travel journalists to visit Kerry and Ireland, to experience at first-hand some of the superb experiences on offer for Nordic holidaymakers. Tourism Ireland undertakes a busy publicity programme around the world each year to raise the profile of the island of Ireland – and visits by influential travel writers like these are a key element of that programme.”

Marie Meets NEWS

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

Marie meets Killarney Musical Society

On top of the world at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, I spent a beautiful sunny Sunday evening with Killarney Musical Society,

who weren't one bit 'worse for wear' having celebrated the buzz of four nominations the previous evening, at the AIMS Awards, taking home 3rd place for their performance of Michael Collins A Musical Drama, for 'Best Show', out of 89 societies, over 32 counties in Ireland. The INEC is in it's 20th year hosting this event, serving an impressive 1,400 guests, making use of the balcony areas to accommodate on the night. This cruise ship on land is a tremendous facility on our doorstep, redefining the standards of event production with a massive knock on effect to the economy of our town.

“We were thrilled to be nominated for four awards, Marie, and what made it extra special was that it included the entire cast of approx 120 people,” Pam Brosnan explained, who is the only remaining founding member of Killarney Musical Society, now in her 40th year. “We were nominated for Best Back Stage Management, Best Chorus, Best Musical Director Michael Young and overall Best Show which was absolutely amazing!!" Pam Brosnan and Frank Ashe, I thought of as two massive cogs that kept the wheels turning in this €87,000 production. “The ethos of KMS is the buzz that keeps me going. There are no prima-donnas. If there were they would be moved swiftly to the chorus” Pam said. “Agreed!” voiced Sorcha .... “I'll second that” added Karina Mulchinoch. “The welcome and warmth of the society was made known to us by all our new members this year”. Back to Pam... “I remember one director using the word 'Cans' (it's a slang

word used within the audio industry for headphones). 'Pam why aren't you using the 'cans'. But Marie, backstage, everyone is used to my hand signals. If it isn't broke, then there's no need to fix it in my opinion,” Pam laughed. “I wish the same could be said for this years props! I was told grey, all grey which myself and Frank completed well at Fitzgerald Stadium. We'd made the decision not to paint the underneath of the flats and stairs having power washed, mended, welded and God only knows what else, til I turned around to go home and saw the underneath was clearly visible to the naked eye. On completion, with one week to go, Director Oliver Hurley informed me that the steps of the stairs were now to be red!! All I could see was RED, just before he burst out laughing. Amidst all the hard work, there is always craic!” Pam replied. “We were extremely lucky that the talented work of John Hurley's (Oliver's brother) amazing back wall projections enhanced the over all feel and vibe of Michael Collins."

I had the itch to ask 'why Michael Collins'. I had never heard of it before nor was I familiar with any of the music. “There were many faces at the Laurels pre sale box office I didn't recognise” Pam replied. “I think as Irish people we have passion in our roots,” Ilona continued. “I work at Milltown Presentation School and the history teacher said it was a great revision tool, particularly the Dáil Debates,” Karina added. “I'll never forget the moving silence of 1,700 children at the INEC arena when Michael Collins died,” Sorcha replied. Outgoing Chairperson Brid O'Callaghan explained, “Whilst having our own input, we relied hugely on the direction of a good production team. Both the Director Oliver Hurley & Musical Director Michael Young gave a few suggestions. Oliver knew our cast and said they would really get behind Michael Collins” Brid said. “It takes a while to build up relationships with people so we trusted Oliver. It's a true story of our history,” Sorcha continued, “And we have outgoing chairper-

L-R Karina Mulchinock (AIMS Rep for KMS), Sorcha O'Connor (Chorus Director), In Coming Chair Person Lucy O'Mahony, Outgoing Chairperson Brid O'Callaghan, Pam Brosnan (Back Stage) & Ilona McCubbery (Costumes). Picture Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan

son Brid to thank as there are only two rights given in Ireland for Michael Collins and she succeeded working over two months to secure the rights for Killarney Musical Society, so I think it's safe to say she is going out on a high given we received four nominations out of 86 societies as a result!!"

The proof was 100% in the pudding, I thought, as Sorcha referred to the production of previous shows, as the build up, to the serving of Michael Collins. “It was gas Marie,” Pam continued “Some of our members are huge de Valera fans, one member in particular grew up in a house of de Valera, but he ended up in an opposing role. He embraced and more importantly, he enjoyed the challenge!”

“While Sorcha is busy talking me up there Marie, I would like to express our gratitude for her amazing devotion to the society. There were many stipulations to the show including 'no key changes'. Weekly she equipped our Whatsapp group with soprano and alto variations to familiarise,” outgoing Chairperson Brid explained. Sorcha laughed “I remember Charlene Brosnan telling me her kids were saying 'Oh

Mammy are you listening to that woman again!'"

We poured another cup of tea, complimenting the glamour of the previous evenings ball. “I arrived at Mary Donal's for 'one' before heading to the INEC and overheard some customers refer to me as a day two bride' ” Sorcha laughed. “I had hired it. Sure once it's seen on The Gram, it's no more,” Sorcha continued.

“Thank goodness I'm not on 'The Gram' !” Lucy joked. I do enjoy Instagram for a behind the scenes vibe myself, and was in awe of Bronagh Murphy's post. Never in my life had I seen a couple of hundred people pitch perfect in the small hours of an after party!!

“What a high to come in on!” Incoming Chairperson Lucy smiled. “I have been with KMS for 12 years over all, two on the committee. I am looking forward to my year ahead” Lucy added.

As a voluntary organisation, behind the scenes is sometimes overlooked. It is a pure labour of love that has brought award winning enjoyment to our community. I thought to myself, isn't it true for Annie (Annie Get Your Gun), there really are 'no people like show people!'

Civil War, a song and New York city

A series of random encounters has resulted in one of biggest atrocities of the Civil War being immortalised in a song.

On March 8, 1923, a group of Republican prisoners were taken from their temporary prison cells at the Great Southern Hotel and marched to a location near Countess Road.

Less than 24 hours after the more-documented Ballyseedy Massacre near Tralee, the five men named - Stephen Buckley, Tim Murphy, Daniel Donoghue, Jeremiah O’Donoghue and Tadgh Coffey –were killed by Free State troops with explosives and gunfire.

Fast forward over 100 years when local musician and song writer Donal Power was approached by Tadgh Buckley of Killarney Music School.

“He asked me if I would write a song about an incident with particular emphasis on a person who was his long-dead cousin. I told him I'd try and hoped he would be satisfied with the result,” explained Donal.

“He then gave me a copy of Tim Horgan's book 'The Stones Still Speak', containing the story of Stephen Buckley murdered at the Countess Bridge which also contained a letter written by Stephen the night before his death in 1923, which didn't come to light until six years later. Like many others I was aware of the massacre at Ballyseedy Cross but not the Countess Road, Killarney. So this was the project and the challenge!

“I spent a number of weeks writing a song about the incident. There is a lot of content in the story and I wanted to be true to the content of Stephen’s letter. I completed the song and sang it for him and others at a session where it appeared to make a positive impression. It's an acoustic ballad which I accompany with guitar.” But the story does not end there. A New York-based family, direct descendants of the murdered Stephen Buckley, made contact with Power.

A man named Thomas Buckley from New

York made contact with the local songwriter after hearing the song on Soundcloud.

Thomas explained: “My father, Stephen Buckley, was born in New York City in 1924. His father, Michael Buckley, named his first son, my dad, after his brother Stephen, who was killed at the Countess Bridge in 1923. My older brother is also Stephen Buckley, born in New York in 1954.”

Three members of the New York-based Buckley family, Thomas, Stephen and younger brother Timothy, were on a family holiday to Killarney earlier this month. Power met them and was able to take the brothers to the site of the ambush were he learned that they are also related to Tadhg Buckley, the man who originally asked for the song to be written.

“We don’t know the exact relationship but it is very direct. The three brothers think Tadhg now lives where the murdered Stephen Buckley once lived," added Power.

The song can be downloaded via: https://soundcloud.com/donal-power-170379558/the-countess-road-massacre.

The Countess Road Massacre

Killarney, nineteen-twenty-three

A civil war atrocity

A massacre, a shameful episode

Four soldiers of the I.R.A.

By free-state forces blown away

Executed on the bridge on the Countess Road

A sole survivor on the run,

Tadhg Coffey was the only one

Who managed to escape and tell the news

Of the landmine, the booby-trap

The bullets fired, the cover-up

That killed Tim Murphy, Stephen Buckley and the Donoghues

The day before the massacre

While Stephen was held prisoner

He had a premonition he would die

He gave a letter to the guard

Trusting he would not discard

The message to his mother and the words that said goodbye

The guard denied the last request

And kept the letter he suppressed

When emigrating to the USA

He kept the secret six long years

Till Hannah Buckley, through her tears

Could read what Stephen wrote before they took his life away

“I’d like to live a longer life

But I am reconciled to die

May God protect my family and friends

Rejoice and do not mourn my loss

For I am certain that the cause

Of truth and right, of Pearse and Tone will triumph in the end”

“I die a true Republican

Remember me to gallant men,

To my brothers and my sisters, when I’m dead

And mother, brave it cheerfully

Pray the Rosary for me

And pray for those who sent me to my death“, the letter said

And on that spot a monument

Commemorates the sad event

Where long ago the blood of heroes flowed

Those men who paid the final price

Who made the greatest sacrifice

Executed on the bridge on the Countess Road

Primary Schools donate oak trees back to Killarney National Park

Killarney primary schools have joined the crusade against single use coffee cups this week by joining the Killarney Coffee Cup Project and declaring themselves single-use coffee cup free.

Last Wednesday, Killarney primary schools including Holycross Mercy, Gaelscoil Faithleann, The Monastery and St. Olivers gifted their oak tree saplings back to the park rangers after months of growing these saplings in their classrooms.

The Killarney Coffee Cup Schools Initiative was a collaborative project that included the Killarney Credit Union, the IKC3 Project in MTU, NPWS, Killarney Looking Good, and the Kerry Biosphere. It began last November following the launch The Killarney Coffee Project which is a community grassroots project aimed at eliminating single use coffee cups from Killarney town centre to

protect Killarney National Park and the town's surroundings all in the name of conservation. All Killarney 5th classes were invited to Muckross Schoolhouse and Killarney House respectively for a 2-hour immersive environmental education experience around our connection to the Kerry Biosphere and citizen climate action. Here the students learned about our biosphere and how we as citizens and sustainable initiatives like the Killarney Coffee Cup Project can protect this Special Area of Conservation. Finally, they went outside to work with a park ranger, collecting acorns in leftover single use cups that the project had gathered from various businesses. They took

these acorns back to their classrooms where they planted and cared for their oak tree saplings throughout the winter. Commenting on Wednesday’s presentation of the oak saplings to the rangers, Ciara Treacy from the Killarney Coffee Cup Project said it was fabulous to see such enthusiasm and care shown by the students who grew these saplings throughout the winter. The schools initiative, which wouldn’t have been possible without the help and support of the Killarney Credit Union, was a resounding success and it's fantastic to see the project come full circle with the donation of the saplings back to the park rangers who will plant them back into

our National Park and someday maybe these children’s children will get to play underneath these trees.

The Killarney Coffee Cup Project was launched on 31 July 2023, making Killarney Ireland’s first single use coffee cup free town. The project now includes over 70 participants who no longer offer single use coffee cups encouraging locals to bring their own reusable cup or avail of a deposit cup system. Since it launched, The Killarney Coffee Cup Project has prevented over one million single use coffee cups from either ending up in landfill or ending up as litter in the town.

Three Peaks Cycling Challenge another success for cycling club

Last Saturday’s Three Peaks Cycling Challenge was a fantastic event, despite the inclement weather conditions.

All who participated really enjoyed the camaraderie, food stops, and delicious burger at the finish. Everyone had plenty of laughs throughout the day.

Down Syndrome Kerry and Killarney Cycling Club have thanked everyone who participated in and supported the Three Peaks Cycling Challenge.

“Thanks also to all our wonderful sponsors who supported us for the Three Peaks Cycling Challenge and to everyone

for their marvellous contribution to help make this fantastic day happen,” said Fiona O’Donoghue of Killarney Cycling Club.

“Special thanks to all the volunteers from both Down Syndrome Kerry and Killarney Cycling Club who gave up their time to ensure all cyclists were fed, watered and supported on the day.”

“We wish all who are participating in the Ring of Kerry Cycle the very best on Saturday, July 6.”

Killarney Club kicks off the coastal rowing season

There was a fantastic spectacle of colour and rowing on Lough Leane last Sunday (June 16th) with the coastal rowing clubs of Kerry participating in the first 'Head of the Lake' time-trial for coastal one-design boats.

The event, hosted by the local Flesk Valley Rowing Club, signalled the start of the summer season for clubs rowing the coastal ‘one-design’ boats. It was fitting that on the weekend that the Killarney National Park celebrated the 60th anniversary of the opening of Muckross House to the public, that hundreds of people also flocked to the Flesk Valley shore to appreciate and enjoy the splendour of the park.

Speaking after the event, Flesk Valley chairman, John Fleming thanked all the Kerry clubs who supported this new event and congratulated all the firsttime rowers taking to the water in a

competitive event for the first time.

“We were delighted to welcome our neighbouring clubs Workmens' and Fossa, and look forward to renewing rivalries with them again at the Killarney Regatta at the end of this month,” he said.

“We would also like to thank Mary B. Teahan, Andrew Wharton, Johanna King and the Kerry Coastal Rowing Association for all their support and encouragement, and Denis O'Leary for coordinating safety on the water.”

Flesk Valley would also like to thank the Killarney National Park, Leanes Tool Hire, Hegartys Shop and Muckross Rowing Club for their support.

“This was a great start to the coastal rowing season, and augurs well for the months ahead as clubs build towards the All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships to be held in Dingle at the end of August,” added the chairman.

The Killarney Crafty Ladies raised €3,375.20 Kerry Hospice Foundation/Palliative Care following their latest Teddy Gear Rescue mission. Established in 2013, when a group of eight friends (Betty Benson, Peig Coffey, Honor Doyle, Margaret McCarthy, Kate O’Connor, Brid O’Donoghue Eilish O’Sullivan, Colette Sorensen) came together to raise funds for charities by rescuing Teddy Bears from charity shops in Kerry, also Cork, Limerick and as far away as Galway. The bears are then given a complete makeover. The Craft group meet once a month where they knit, sew and treat the pre-loved bears to stylish new outfits ready for sales at Halloween and Christmas.

Killarney Camera Club names Julia Deady as Photographer of the Year

Julia Deady has been named Photographer of the Year by Killarney Camera Club.

The local club held its final competition of the season last week.

Over the course of the year members were invited to submitted photographs of pre-determined themes.

Based on her placings across all seven of the club’s competitions over the years Julia was deemed the winner for the 2024 season.

Her latest creation, a sunrise photograph of the Dolomites, Italy, earned her

first place in the Unrestricted category for June.

“It shows the mountains of Compaccio, Saltria, Gioge and Piz with a series of mountain huts in the village of Alpe di Siussi. This region is the highest alpine meadow in Europe, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The mist rolling down from the mountains added to the atmosphere of this incredible region,” she said.

Iryna Halaieva won the Novice of the Year award, while the Most Improved Photographer was Maryann Heidtke.

STEM Platinum Award for Two Mile School

There was great excitement in Two Mile CNS earlier this week as pupils and teachers tuned in to the Science Foundation Ireland, Curious Minds Awards ceremony.

After six years of Gold Awards for Science, the pupils in Two Mile decided to aim higher for the Platinum Award. The excitement was even more real when

Two Mile found out it was the only school in Kerry to achieve the Platinum Award this year and that they were one of only 30 schools in Ireland!

The Platinum award is a school-wide development project focusing on raising awareness of STEM and how taking part has improved the school community. The children studied the theme of healthy eating and the Science behind it, includ-

ing how food is grown and the effects of different foods on our bodies.

‘The importance of STEM to children cannot be overstated’ said Catherine Barry, Principal of Two Mile CNS. ‘Through Science we can teach critical thinking skills, build resilience and encourage creativity and ingenuity. Most importantly, it is fun and children in all classes enjoy engaging in the learning activities’

The Parents of Two Mile are very supportive of Two Mile School Plan or Science. ‘The earlier that kids engage with STEM subjects in a fun way the better’ said Cliff Fee, parent’s nominee on the Board of Management ‘This will give them the foundation that they need for

choosing subjects at second level, creating a pathway to achieving their goals in the future’.

Donie McCarthy to be remembered with golf classic Parkinson’s Support Group information session

On the approach of the second anniversary of his passing, Firies GAA have taken the opportunity to both acknowledge and pay tribute to the late Donie McCarthy.

Donie was a key figure; player, coach, mentor and officer in Firies GAA club for many years.

Michael Quirke, former team mate and part of the events’ committee, outlined the significance of remembering and acknowledging the legacy that Donie left to his beloved club. “Donie exemplified the concept of a club stalwart, his love of both the game and the development of the club was boundless. His energy towards the development of young players is truly visible today in Firies. Donie got great satisfaction from seeing young players improve, and as they got older and achieve success with Firies. During his successful playing days, he helped lead Firies to secure the O’Sullivan Cup title in 1979 and went onto manage and coach many Firies teams down through the years. Since his untimely passing in November 2022, the club has aspired to acknowledge his legacy.”

Final preparations are being put in place for the classic which takes place on Saturday, July 13, in Maine Valley Members Golf Club, Killorglin. The classic, which includes GUI handicap applied with a maximum adjusted handicap of 24 for men and 36 for ladies, promises to be

a great day celebrating Donie, with top team, nearest the pin, and longest drive prizes.

Family, friends and former club mates of Donie gathered to officially launch the golf classic in Pairc Eamonn, along with Kerry Senior Footballer; Dara Moynihan to lend his support the event. The Firies GAA Club were eager to recognise L. & M. Construction, of New York City for their generous contribution towards The Donie McCarthy Memorial Golf Classic. The American company, has strong club connections and supports many of the club events. “Without this support, we would be unable to organise such events. The Club would also like to acknowledge the members who attended the launch from young to old to recognise Donies’ contribution,” a club spokesperson said this week.

If you or your club are interested in submitting a team of four at €200 per team, you can contact Brendan Quirke 087-9172854, Dermot O’Connor 087-6958610, Michael Quirke 0876683699 or Maine Valley Members Golf Club 066-9761979. Likewise, sponsored tee boxes are available for €50.

The South Kerry Parkinson’s Support Group is holding an open-hour on July 1.

The meeting will take place at 1pm at the Centre for Smart Ageing in Farranfore.

“All are welcome, including family members, as we come together to support individuals with Parkinson’s,” said centre spokesperson.

“At this event, we are committed to building a strong community support network to help those with Parkinson’s lead fulfilling lives.

“Participants can look forward to a wide range of activities, including get-togethers, day trips, health and wellbeing sessions, exercise classes, and much more.

“Don’t miss this opportunity to connect, learn, and grow with others who understand your journey. Together, we can make a positive impact and create lasting memories. We hope to see you there.”

‘Tiny Teacher Babies’ programme draws to a close at St Oliver’s

The three Fifth Classes in St Oliver’s National School are wrapping up the Roots of Empathy programme this week.

The children have been working with their ‘Tiny Teacher Babies’ since last Autumn on this emotional literacy programme.

Once a month the baby visits the classroom with their parent and teaches the children about attachment and emotions as they all sit around the green blanket.

Roots of Empathy was originally introduced to Killarney by Lotte Lyne via the Stephen Lyne Foundation that she set up in memory of her son.

“The students of St Oliver’s are lucky to benefit from this Canadian programme that research has shown reduces aggressive behaviour amongst school children,” said the school’s Neasa Ní Lionáird. “The baby is a vehicle to introduce the language of emotional literacy to the children. The programme tackles challenging themes such as responsible parenting and the risks to babies of passive smoking. St Oliver’s are very grateful to their three ‘Tiny Teachers Babies’, Ayla, Blake and Lorcan and their families who gave generously of their time to visit classrooms nine times over the school year.”

Human interactions leading to changes in deer’s behaviour away Home

Stonehenge defaced by climate activists

Climate activists from the group Just Stop Oil sparked outrage after dousing several stones at the historic Stonehenge monument with orange paint on Wednesday. The incident occurred just a day before thousands were expected to visit the site for the summer solstice celebration.

Video footage circulating online shows two activists approaching the megaliths with spray canisters, believed to have contained orange cornflour-based paint. The group claimed the paint would wash away with rain but acknowledged the seriousness of their actions.

"We had to decorate the stones to jolt

the government into action," said activist Rajan Naidu, 73. "Their inaction on climate change is a crime against humanity. We need a firm commitment to phasing out fossil fuels by 2030."

Police swiftly apprehended the two individuals and charged them with damaging the ancient monument. English Heritage, the organization managing Stonehenge, expressed dismay at the vandalism. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the act, calling it "disgraceful."

This is not the first time Just Stop Oil has resorted to disruptive tactics to raise awareness about climate change. The group has targeted museums and galleries with similar actions in the past.

Chipmaker ‘Nvidia’ now world's most valuable tech firm

Nvidia Corporation (NVDA) has surged past Microsoft and Apple to become the world's most valuable publicly traded company. This achievement underscores the booming artificial intelligence (AI) sector and investor confidence in Nvidia's dominance within it.

Fuelled by a 3.4% surge in its stock price on Tuesday, Nvidia's market capitalisa-

tion surpassed $3.34 trillion, eclipsing both Microsoft's $3.32 trillion and Apple's $3.29 trillion. This rapid rise comes amidst a period of overall growth for all three tech giants, but Nvidia's focus on AI hardware has propelled it to the top. The company's share price has skyrocketed over 170% so far in 2024, adding more than $2 trillion to its market cap.

The Office of Public Works (OPW) launched the ‘Protect Our Park – Don’t Feed the Deer’ campaign this week, aimed at changing public behaviour to protect the wild deer in the Phoenix Park. This initiative comes in response to a recent report from University College Dublin (UCD), which highlights the detrimental impact of human feeding on the behaviour and well-being of the park’s iconic deer population.

The UCD report, conducted in collaboration with the OPW, reveals the impact

on the deer of human feeding by tourists and members of the public. The result is a significant alteration in the natural behaviour patterns of the deer.

Feeding disrupts the deer’s natural foraging instincts, leading to dependency on human-provided food sources. This causes the deer to seek out human interaction, which can lead to aggressive encounters in their aim to find food. This dependence not only affects their health but also alters their social dynamics and habitat utilisation within the park.

Heatwave on the horizon

Rejoice! A sizzling heatwave could be sweeping across the country next week, with temperatures potentially reaching a scorching 27°C.

Forecasters are predicting a shift in weather patterns, with high pressure systems bringing sunshine and dry conditions. The current prediction from the ECMWF weather model shows particularly hot weather around June 28th.

Met Éireann, Ireland's national meteorological service, shares the optimistic outlook. Their extended forecast for next week indicates "settled weather into the early days" with highs reaching "the low twenties." While they haven't confirmed temperatures as high as 27°C yet, their forecast aligns with the overall trend of warmer weather.

Irish crisp giant Tayto turned up the flavour this year with the launch of their limited-edition Mighty Munch crisps. Combining the classic crunch of their original crisp with the fiery kick of their popular Mighty Munch snack mix, the new flavour has sent taste buds tingling across Ireland.

“This sizzling Mighty Munch flavour packs a punch,” Tayto announced, aiming the new crisp at “mighty crisp connoisseurs.” Launched in 2022 to celebrate Tayto’s 70th anniversary, the limited-edition release follows the trend of previous successful short-run flavours, like the Fizzy Cola crisp launched earlier that year.

Listowel Bypass has fully opened to traffic

The new N69 Listowel Bypass has fully opened to traffic for the first time this afternoon.

The road development consists of the realignment of a section of the N69 and is approximately 6km in length.

The €61m scheme includes approximately 4km of a new single carriageway and approximately 2.5km of online improvements to the existing R533 (John

B Keane Road) with enhanced pedestrian and cycle facilities. The project includes three roundabouts and associated realignment of local roads. There was also a considerable body of offline work and associated works carried out. Completed by contractors, Wills Brothers, who commenced construction in February 2022, the new bypass will be officially opened in due course.

Abattoir shut down following shocking RTE investigation

Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, announced the complete closure of Shannonside Foods this week, the country's only operating horse slaughterhouse. This decisive action follows an exposé by RTÉ Investigates that revealed disturbing footage of alleged animal cruelty at the facility.

The footage sparked outrage, prompting protests and petitions demanding the abattoir's closure. Minister McConalogue responded swiftly, suspending operations and launching a full investigation into "absolutely abhorrent mistreatment of animals and suspected

criminality" at the plant. The investigation is ongoing, but the department has since confirmed that no horses have entered the food chain from Shannonside Foods in the past three week and that the operation is fully suspended, effectively shutting down the abattoir.

Minister McConalogue assured the public that "no stone will be left unturned" during the investigation. The department will determine if legal action is warranted against those involved in the alleged abuse.

Hot Dog champ Joey Chestnut banned for vegan deal

Competitive eating legend Joey "Jaws" Chestnut has been barred from the prestigious Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest after signing an endorsement deal with a vegan food company.

Chestnut, a 16-time champion and holder of the world record for most hot dogs devoured in 10 minutes (a staggering 76 in 2021), will be forced to sit out this year's competition due to a conflict of interest. The vegan company he partnered with, Impossible Foods, produces plant-based alternatives to meat prod-

ucts, including hot dogs. Organizers, Major League Eating (MLE), see this as a betrayal. "Imagine if Michael Jordan said to Nike, 'I love being the face of Nike but I want to do commercials for Adidas too,'" said a source close to MLE to ESPN.

Chestnut, however, maintains that he has no contractual obligations with Nathan's Famous, the hot dog brand sponsoring the event, and that he should be allowed to compete regardless of his endorsement deal.

The regulations will lay out the rules of the road for people choosing to use light electric vehicles which will be enforceable under Irish law.

The regulations set out clearly how different types of e-scooters and e-bikes can be used safely.

1. E-scooters with a maximum power output of 400 W or less, a maximum design speed of 20km/h and with a maximum weight of 25 kg, will be legal to use on

public roads. Any e-scooter that goes over these parameters – more powerful and heavier e-scooters - will remain illegal. The new regulations stipulate that users of e-scooters must be 16 years or over, users will be able to use their e-scooters in cycle lanes and bus lanes but not footpaths or pedestrianised zones and are not allowed to carry other passengers or goods.

2. E-bikes with a maximum power output

of 250 W or less, a motor that cuts off once pedalling stops and has a maximum speed of 25km/hr - will be treated the same as bicycles and will be permitted to use cycle lanes and bus lanes but will not be permitted for use on footpaths.

3. E-mopeds are powered cycles with pedals that have an electrical power-assist greater than e-bikes and are often capable of speeds in excess of even fast cyclists. Because of this additional power, all e-mopeds will require vehicle registration through Revenue and to have annual motor tax (€35 per annum). Users must be 16 years or over. Additionally, throttle e-mopeds will require insurance.

No sign of a slowdown on property prices

Irish Property prices have now reportedly increased for the 10th successive month in a row.

The pace of rises has also picked up again, with an increase of 7.3pc in the year to March.

It comes as banks are cutting mortgage lending rates with some cutting up to one percentage point.

The countrywide shortage of available properties, a feature reported here on many occasions, is fuelling the surge in prices.

In certain areas we are now seeing prices surpass the highest level they reached at the peak of 2007.

However, a large majority of buyers are being locked out due to affordability is-

sues.

Recent figures from the banks show the average deposit needed to buy a home is now €52,500 for a first-time buyer. Rising prices are largely driven by those seeking to get a roof over their heads rather than property investment. Indications are that the market is likely to get hotter as an issue in the run-up to the next election.

Goodbody Stockbrokers have reported that house price inflation rose to its fastest pace in 16 months in March as inflation in the existing home sector accelerated.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said prices surged by 7.3pc in the year to March. This is compared to an increase of 6.2pc in the year to February.

Dublin prices increased by 7.2pc in the year to March, and prices outside Dublin are up by 7.4pc.

The region outside of Dublin with the largest rise in house prices was the midwest – Clare, Limerick and Tipperary –with a jump of 12.3pc in the last year.

At the other end of the scale, the border area of Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo had a 2.9pc rise. Price rises are being fuelled largely by a severe lack of properties to buy.

Prices of second-hand homes are starting to shoot up after being relatively stable compared with new-home prices. Residential property prices of new dwellings in the first quarter of this year were 8.4pc higher than in the same quarter last year.

Students recognised for their grá for Gaeilge

Students from two schools from the Killarney district are to be presented with a Gaelbhratach (Irish flag) in the coming weeks.

Various activities to promote the use of the Irish language were set up and run by student committees at Firies National School, and Loughquittane National School.

Run by Gael Linn, ‘Gaelbhratach' is a national initiative that encourages primary and secondary school students to speak Irish outside of the formal classroom setting. In total, 72 flags will be awarded to primary school students across Ireland - the most awarded in any one year. Flags are awarded in recognition of their efforts to inspire and empower their school communities to speak Irish.

“We are delighted to award primary school students from Kerry with a Gaelbhratach. Gaelbhratach gives young people of all backgrounds the opportunity to use and develop their Irish language skills in an interactive and non-traditional way,"

Edel Ní Bhraonáin, Bainisteoir Gael-

bhratachsaid. “The programme aims to put the student voice at the centre of their learning through the Gaelbhratach committee. The role of this student-led committee is to direct the Gaelbhratach activities throughout the school yearempowering students in Kerry to take ownership of how and when they use their Irish.

“We have new schools hoping to join the scheme each year and it is inspiring to see young people’s passion for the language. The most rewarding part of the scheme is hearing feedback, from students and teachers alike, on how they have integrated the language into their everyday lives and the impact it has had.”

Gaelbhratach is an Irish language scheme focused on promoting Irish in primary and secondary schools around the country. Each year, Gaelbhratach organises the post-primary Gaelbhratach Awards Ceremony to celebrate the significant contributions made by teachers and students around the country towards the promotion of the Irish language in their schools.

Phone contracts

Many companies in Ireland offer telephone services for both fixed line and mobile. Each of the providers offer different packages to consumers. Before entering into a telephone contract, you are advised to think carefully about your needs and compare prices and plans.

ComReg's price comparison tool allows you to compare mobile phone charges across all operators. It helps you to select the best mobile phone package for you, based on your individual usage. What is a fixed line contract?

Fixed line is commonly known as your landline or home telephone. A fixed line means that your telephone (or the stand for a cordless telephone) is not wire free but is physically connected to a point on a wall in your home. Many providers now offer fixed line services as part of a package (also known as a ‘bundle’) along with home internet, and sometimes TV. What contracts are offered by mobile network providers?

Mobile network providers offer a range of plans (with or without a new phone) that includes a certain amount of calls to other mobiles or landlines, text messages and data (this allows you to use internet while not connected to WIFI).

There are 2 main plans that mobile phone providers offer:

1. Prepay: This is a pay-as-you-go option where you buy credit from various outlets such as shops, bank machines and online and top up your phone when you need to. Some providers offer prepay options that include calls, texts and data. You don’t need to sign to a contract and are free to switch networks at any time.

2. Bill pay: This means that you get a monthly bill for the services you have used in the previous month and will pay a set price. The duration of the contract will usually be either month-to-month or 12 to 24 months. If you go above your allowance of calls, texts and data you will have to pay extra. When you enter into a bill pay contract, your contract is with the mobile network provider. Bill pay plans usually give you the option to either buy a phone outright or buy it

(either free or at a significantly lower price) as part of a bundle. There is also the option of a SIM-only plan where you don’t need a new phone and simply sign up to a monthly bill pay contract for calls, texts and data.

What’s usually included in my plan?

This depends on the plan and provider but generally your plan includes:

• A certain amount of free national calls

• A certain amount of calls to particular networks

• An allowance for SMS (text message)

• An allowance for data usage (usually measured in gigabytes or GB)

Can the cost of my mobile or broadband package increase mid contract?

Many of the State’s leading telecom operators link the price of their mobile and broadband packages to inflation, with increases of 3 per cent plus the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rate of inflation rolled out each year. These increases are usually applied in April each year. The increases are outlined in the terms & condition of your contract and consequently are not considered to be a breach of contract by the provider.

What is roaming?

Roaming is using your mobile phone while abroad. EU regulations mean that mobile phone customers are charged the same price for calls, texts and data when travelling in the European Economic Area (EEA), which include all European Union countries plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. You should be aware that you may still be charged roaming rates for international travel outside the EEA.

What is the impact of Brexit on roaming charges when travelling to UK?

Since 1 January 2021, you are no longer entitled to the same roaming rates under EU law when travelling to the UK. You should contact your provider to check the up-to-date prices that apply and what mobile allowances apply when travelling in the UK. ComReg has more information about the impact of Brexit on mobile roaming. What information should I get when I sign up to a contract?

Providers of fixed or mobile services must give you the following information in your contract:

• The name and address of the service provider

• Details of the service to be provided, the quality levels and the waiting periods for first-time connections.

• Details of the pricing and charges (tariffs)

• Maintenance service available and if any charges apply.

• The duration of the contract and how to renew or cancel it

• Your right to compensation or refund if service quality levels are not met.

• Details of the complaint handling procedure

When you sign up to a new contract, you can only be bound to the contract for an initial minimum period of 24 months (2 years) or less. You can keep your existing landline or mobile phone number when switching to a new provider. Once the contract has been agreed, the number should be activated within a few hours.

Can I cancel my phone contract?

You should check the terms and conditions of your contract to find out what your cancellation rights are. You may have to pay a fee to cancel a contract. Your legal right to cancel the contract for free depends on whether you signed up over the phone, in person, or online. If you signed up over the phone or online you can cancel the contract if you signed up less than 14 days ago over the phone or online. This is called a ‘cooling-off’ period. If you have already used the service (for example, you made calls on a phone), you are likely to be charged for what you have used. If you are waiting for a good such as a mobile phone to be delivered, the cooling off period starts the day you receive it. This is to allow you time to check if the phone is what you paid for. If you cancel outside of the cooling off period, you may be charged a penalty fee or have to pay off the rest of your contract. Check the terms and conditions of your contract. However, you don’t have the legal right to a 14-day cooling-off period if you signed up in person, for example you met a salesperson and signed the contract in the shop premises. Any costs and charges for cancelling your contract should be made clear in your contract and at the point of sale.

What should I consider if I am switching providers?

Before switching providers, you should check your previous bills to review how

many minutes and texts you use and how much data you will need.

When comparing providers and plans, you should think about:

• Discount schemes

• Minimum contract period

• Penalties for ending the contract early

• Charges and fees (can include connection charges, monthly rental fees, call costs, disconnection and reconnection charges)

• Price options

• Number portability

For mobile contracts, also think about:

• Network coverage

• Roaming for travel abroad

ComReg's price comparison tool allows you to compare mobile phone charges across all operators. It helps you to select the optimum mobile phone package, based on your individual usage. Before you switch, you should contact your existing provider to check if any cancellation period or penalties apply. You will probably need your Universal Account Number (UAN) to switch. This is usually displayed on your bill, but if you can’t find it you should ask your existing provider.

Are calls to Non Geographic Numbers (NGNs) such as 1800 or 0818 more expensive?

Calls to 1800 numbers are free. Calls to 0818 numbers still cost the same as calls to landline numbers.

You can read more about changes to non-geographic numbers on the ComReg website or watch this video about the changes.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY O’DONOGHUE

In loving memory of a wonderful husband, dad and grandad Florrie O’Donoghue (Crothur Og) Salmon Leap Farm, Inch, Clonkeen, Killarney, Co Kerry who Passed Away on 21st June 2023.

As we lovingly remember Florrie on his first anniversary, his wife Sheila, his sons Sean and Mike, his daughters-in-law Eilish and Daphne, and his grandchildren Shauna, Ronan, Shane and Peter, wish to acknowledge the many expressions of sympathy and overwhelming kindness shown to us on the heartbreaking loss of Florrie.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our relatives, neighbours and many friends who visited our home, attended the funeral mass, and who provided emotional and practical support for us at this difficult time.

For those who travelled long distances, watched the funeral livestream, sent floral tributes, Mass Cards, Perpetual Enrolements, sympathy cards, online condolences, and guards of honour, we are humbled by the outpouring of support we have received.

Our sincere thanks to Fr. Jim Lenihan and Bishop William Murphy for the love and support shown to Florrie, and for their kindness and empathy as shown to ourselves. Also, to thank them both for their very special and moving funeral mass which was very personal and a fitting tribute to Florrie.

Thank you to everyone who made Florrie’s mass special for us, in particular to Paud and Mary for the wonderful music and singing, to Anne and Jerry for the church preparation and live streaming, and to others for simply being present on the day.

Thank you to those who cared for Florrie, to the medical staff and carers in Kenmare Hospital Nursing Unit, Kerry University Hospital, and Dr Ken Keohane in Deenagh Medical, to Nuala and all the Pharmacists in Trant’s Pharmacy, all of whom ensured that Florrie was well cared for throughout his illness.

HOME COMFORTS

Kerry book home quarter-final with brilliant victory over Déise

The Kerry ladies secured a home All-Ireland quarter-final by defeating Waterford by 4-13 to 0-9 in Killarney on Saturday.

A frustrating draw away to Donegal left them in danger of being eliminated but they bounced back in impressive fashion in the Fitzgerald Stadium to guarantee a first place finish in the three-team group.

Should Donegal beat Waterford in the final game, they will join Kerry on four points but The Kingdom will come first thanks to a quirk of the LGFA rulebook.

If two teams finish level on points, their head-to-head record counts first but in this case the head-to-head game was a draw. The next tie-breaker is points scored in the drawn game (i.e. just points and not goals). Kerry scored nine points to Donegal’s six (the final score was 0-9 to 1-6), so Kerry hold the advantage here.

Of course, if Donegal were to draw or lose, Kerry will finish first on their own.

EXCELLENT

The two-time All-Ireland runners-up

were truly excellent against Waterford, particularly in the first half when they ran up an unassailable 13-point lead. Playing with the assistance of a strong breeze into the Lewis Road End, Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s girls were able to pin Waterford in, completely dismantling their kickouts with an aggressive high press.

Expertly taken goals by Hannah O’Donoghue and Danielle O’Leary left the visitors reeling and a string of wonderful points by the likes of Niamh Carmody, Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Niamh Ní Chonhcúir and the red-hot O’Donoghue put the game out of sight.

With the job effectively done, the second half was far less exhilarating, although Dineen and the fit-again Síofra O’Shea both found the back of the net to extend the lead.

Laoch na hImeartha Aishling O’Connell also deserves a special mention. The tight-marking half back threw off the shackles and tore forward to kick two nice points, one in each period. Kerry can now enjoy a weekend off as they wait to see who will join themselves, Armagh and Cork in the last eight. The quarter-finals will be staged in two weeks’ time on July 6/7.

Long-awaited Morley goal caps Kerry win

Adam Moynihan reports from O’Moore Park, Portlaoise

All-Ireland SFC Group 4

Kerry 2-21 Louth 1-10

Second-half goals by Diarmuid O’Connor and Tadhg Morley propelled Kerry to a 14-point victory over Louth on Sunday as the Munster champions marched on to the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.

They came up against a spirited Louth side who were cheered on by a boisterous set of travelling supporters in Portlaoise, but the Kingdom’s superior footballing ability came up trumps in the end.

Their half-time lead of five was almost trebled by the time the final whistle arrived and with first place in Group 4 secured, Jack O’Connor and co. can now enjoy a weekend off.

Kerry will face one of the winners of the four preliminary ties in the quarters in Dublin on June 29/30. They know full well that tougher tests await.

ORGANISED

Facing a packed defence that looks far better organised under new Louth manager Ger Brennan, Kerry had to be patient throughout a hotly contested first half. They started well with Joe O’Con-

nor, Seánie O’Shea and Tony Brosnan pointing inside the first five minutes but that good work was undone when Louth corner back Donal McKenny beat Brian Ó Beaglaoich to a high ball and bundled it into the net to make it 0-3 to 1-0.

‘Begley’ then fisted over at the other end to re-establish Kerry’s lead and two David Clifford frees either side of points by Craig Lennon and Ciarán Byrne left the scores at 0-6 to 1-2 heading into the second quarter.

Kerry began to assert their dominance in this period with Ó Beaglaoich and Clifford swinging over beautiful left-footed efforts from well out the pitch. Paudie Clifford (twice), Paul Murphy (after a lovely piece of skill by Dara Moynihan), and Diarmuid O’Connor also got their names on the scoresheet as Conor Grimes, Sam Mulroy and Bevan Duffy did likewise for the Wee County. All of which meant the Kingdom led by five (0-13 to 1-5) at the break.

MISS

Louth just about managed to stay in

touch in the opening stages of the second half thanks to points by Grimes and Mulroy and they would have been closer were it not for a poor miss by Lennon with the goal at his mercy.

Kerry were far more clinical in attack and when Diarmuid O’Connor pounced on a loose ball to slot home a soccer-style goal in the 47th minute, they led by 10.

Louth keeper Niall McDonell vehemently disputed the umpires’ decision to award the goal as he felt the ball hadn’t crossed the line before striking his head and then the crossbar before spinning out wide of the post. Video footage of the incident is inconclusive.

It would be fair to say that the Louth faithful were not best pleased with referee Conor Lane and his officials throughout the game. Some borderline decisions did appear to go Kerry’s way, although not even the most staunch Louth supporter would be bold enough to suggest that those calls accounted for the 14-point deficit.

The game rather petered out in the final quarter but there was time for one final

flourish – and it came from an unlikely source.

Veteran defender Tadhg Morley is not known for his scoring prowess. In fact, he hadn’t managed to score a goal in any of his previous 104 games in Kerry colours at minor, U21, junior or senior level. He finally got off the mark in the 69th minute of this game when he rounded off a good team move with an emphatic finish from close range. One for the scrapbook for the reliable centre back from Templenoe.

And, so, it’s on to the quarters for Kerry and fellow group winners Dublin, Armagh and Donegal. They will be joined by the winners of the preliminary quarter-final matches, which take place this weekend.

On Saturday, Galway host Monaghan (4pm), Tyrone face Roscommon (5pm), and Mayo welcome Derry to Castlebar (6.30pm). Finally, on Sunday, Louth take on Cork in Inniskeen (3pm). All matches will be shown live on GAAGO.

O’Sullivan impressed

Eamonn Fitzgerald catches up with Irish race walking legend

Gillian O’Sullivan to discuss Ireland’s recent success at the European Athletics Championships

“The nation holds its breath,” said RTÉ commentator George Hamilton during Ireland’s quarter-final penalty shootout with Romania in 1990, and David O’Leary’s historic spot-kick. Those were the glory days of the Charlton era. Well, the Irish sporting nation held its breath once more last week during the European Athletics Championships and the heroics of Ciara Mageean, Rhasidat Adeleke, Sharlene Mawdsley, Thomas Barr and Chris O’Donnell as they won two gold and two silver, a mighty haul for this small nation.

Who better to speak to on this topic than Killarney’s own Gillian O’Sullivan, herself a silver medallist in the 2003 World Championships in Paris?

The Minish race walker also set the unofficial world record in the 5000m walk in Santry, Dublin in 2002, which was thankfully later ratified by the IAAF. Her record stands. That was a magnificent achievement.

Her silver in Paris was the first time since 1995 that an Irish athlete had won a World Championship medal. She was one of the main contenders for Ireland to win a medal in the Olympics in Athens in 2004 in the 20km walk but suffered an injury to her lower back before the games that prevented her from taking part. She retired in April 2007 after enduring years of injuries.

EF: Gillian, the recent successes of the Irish athletes in Rome must have had you holding your breath.

GOS: It was unbelievable for the Irish athletes right from when Ireland won the gold in the mixed relay and then of course Ciara (Mageean) striking gold and Rhasidat winning silver. It is so difficult to even qualify for the final of the events when you look at the world-class competitors at the European Championships.

It was a huge boost for athletics in Ireland and particularly so for the ladies. What that will do for the current Irish athletes in all sports and for the young children sampling other sports is unbelievable.

Killarney Valley AC are making huge strides in New Road, not just with international stars such as Sarah Leahy, and now Oisín Lynch who is heading off on a scholarship to the USA, but also the many club members, young and not-soyoung, who are always progressing to even better PBs. That is how it all started for you above in the Spa field many years ago.

Yes, indeed, I started out in the Spa/ Muckross Community Games, and I can thank the support I got from my family and those Community Games volunteers in Spa/Muckross who put so much time and effort into encouraging us to participate and improve to win medals. Not just in Kerry but in the national finals at Butlins in Mosney. Those were great days that I cherish.

We rarely heard of race walking until you hit the headlines. Why this event?

I’m not so sure how I specialised in this event, but it just seemed to suit me better than the sprints or the long distance running. Somehow I got good at it, improved and took it on from there.

When I went on to college (UCC) I continued and was fortunate to get good coaching. Rob Heffernan (now an RTÉ athletics pundit) was also making his mark as a road walker. We were a great help to each other as we were competing in all those big races at that time.

You brought great honour to yourself, your family, Killarney and Ireland by winning the silver medal in Paris in the World Championships.

Yes, it was very special to win any medal competing against the best in the 20k walk. It was so competitive, as all of these races are, and it all came together for me that day. You need a lot of luck, of course; timing your run, following your race plan and delivering at the tape.

That memory lives on in a special way near your home at Minish. Visitors arriving from Cork see that Kil-

larney has a world silver medallist as that roundabout in Lissivigeen is named in your honour. Your close neighbour Mick Gleeson, himself an All-Ireland winner, realised the value of your achievements and secured the naming of the roundabout during his time in political life.

Mick was always very supportive and helpful in every way. He appreciated the value of sport.

That was a high, but just like life itself, there are also lows. In the runup to the 2004 Olympics in Athens, you were in the form of your life and were pinpointed as a real medal prospect for Ireland, until…

As you said there are highs and lows and in the long-term preparation for the Olympics things were going very well. I trained very strategically to peak for the Olympics, got plenty of rest, ate the right foods at the right times and it was all good until I was struck with an injury. At first it was a setback but I felt all would be well by the time the Olympics came around. It wasn’t to be, and the injury didn’t clear up. I had to make the tough but inevitable decision to pull out. That was devastating as any sportsperson will tell you, having to withdraw from the day you looked forward to so much. That’s sport.

With the maturity of recollection, you appreciate the good days and the fact that you were healthy enough to participate, even if you didn’t win a medal. Most athletes in a race don’t win a medal.

Generally in the past, the misogynistic trait in too many males meant that praise for female athletes, whenever it was given, was done so with begrudgery. Thankfully, that is changing and continues to change thanks to the recent European Championships, successful world-class athletes like yourself, and Kerry LGFA, to mention but a few.

Attitudes are changing and it’s all for the

good. I have great admiration for the Irish ladies soccer team and Kerry LGFA who really impress me with their standard of play. It’s not that many years ago when the Kerry ladies had to fight their corner to get basic facilities for training and travel allowances.

What about the vitriol Rhasidat has had to suffer on social media?

Those faceless begrudgers, those hurlers on the ditch who spill out their negativity and hide from their own realities knowing nothing about sport or its values. Their abuse is despicable.

Those faceless begrudgers, those hurlers on the ditch who spill out their negativity and hide from their own realities knowing nothing about sport or its values. Their abuse is despicable.

Now for the hard question, Gillian: what does sport mean to you and why is it valuable in your life?

There are great physical advantages, where you learn to take care of your body and live a healthy lifestyle. There is great rivalry in a race but look at all the friendships you make for life. That was very obvious in the European Championships. Not only were the Irish athletes knitted together as an Irish team, but the TV cameras showed the camaraderie and sheer delight when they won. They were enjoying themselves and were united in sport.

That’s one of the great values of sport and it also prepares you well for life. Sport helps us to face the many challenges and stresses in life that we all encounter at some time or another. And that feeds in directly into your own business as a personal trainer

in Carrigaline. (Gillian is married to Anthony Kelly and they have one son, 12-year-old Tom whose sporting interests are horse riding and swimming). Although your business is not confined to sportspeople alone…

No not at all. In fact, many of my clients are not sportspeople per se. They are ordinary people who want to regulate their lives, take responsibility for preserving it and appreciating it. For some, it's an exercise plan and to know how to follow that to get fitter and consequently feel better and enjoy life. They want to feel better about themselves. They may be under certain stresses of one kind or another and want to learn coping mechanisms to deal with these.

Your parents Alice and Pat as well as your siblings Thomas, Michael, Paul and Maria who supported you throughout your magnificent sporting career must be equally proud of your wonderful work promoting health awareness. The Irish phrase says it best: ‘Níl sa saol ach seal, lá thuas lá thíos’ (Life is only a period of time, one day up, one day down.)

And it just dawns on me now, that Gillian O’Sullivan and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, two of the bestknown Kerry sports stars, have the traditional Irish natural red hair, but it takes more than that colour to reach the top in their respective sports. Mná Chiarraí chun tosaigh arís.

Kingdom youngsters capture Kennedy Shield

Kerry won their first piece of Kennedy Cup silverware in seven years by defeating the North Dublin Schoolboys/Girls League (NDSL) by two goals to one at the University of Limerick.

After drawing with Tipperary South 3-3 and losing 1-0 to Waterford in heartbreaking fashion in the group stage, the Kingdom entered the shield. Goals by Thomas Keane and Donnacha Vaughan helped them to a 2-1 win over Carlow in the quarter-final, which set up a semi-fi-

nal tie against Clare.

That clash with their fellow Munster men ended in a 1-1 draw at full-time (Jayden Hurley provided the Kerry goal) and so the match went all the way to penalties. Kerry held their nerve to prevail 6-5 and advance to the final.

Kerry started well against NDSL in the decider and goals via a Lachlann Scannell corner and Darragh Keane gave them a 2-0 lead inside 11 minutes.

The Dubliners pulled one back in the second period but the Kerry lads showed courage, heart and plenty of skill to hang

Silver and gold for Muckross rowers

Muckross Rowing Club had a large contingent of crews competing in the recent Munster Branch Regatta held at the National Rowing Centre in Cork.

The event was the latest in an action-packed regatta season for the club that has already taken in regattas in Limerick, Leitrim and a number of events in Cork.

The club enjoyed a very successful outing with three wins, four second place finishes and 11 further crews placing third in race finals.

The club was especially successful in the Men’s J18B Double event, taking both gold and silver in the final with four crews from the club among the final six. The other two golds for Muckross were secured in the final of the Men’s J16 Double and the Men’s J14 Quad.

The club is now looking forward to its next regatta, another outing to the National Rowing Centre for the two-day Cork Regatta. The Cork Regatta is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, June 22/23, with 28 Muckross crews entered. The Cork Regatta also takes in a round of selection trials, with a number of Muck-

ross rowers in contention for selection to national crews.

The final weekend of June is then among the busiest for the club. On Saturday, June 29, the Rowing Ireland 1k Classic in Lough Rynn, Leitrim is the top national event for Junior 14-15 and Masters crews. And on Sunday, June 30, the historic Killarney Regatta will see local rivalries renewed in the contest for traditional 'Sixing' races. The Killarney Six style of traditional rowing boat is now unique to the town.

The busy spell of competition for the Muckross club then leads on to the ultimate national contest: the Irish Rowing Championships in mid-July.

WINNING MUCKROSS CREWS: Men’s J18B Double - Seán O’Donovan, Cillian Leslie. Men’s J16 Double - Ronan Fahy, Cian Scannell (Muckross A). Men’s J14 Quad - Aaron O’Connor, Connor Duffin, Oscar O’Sullivan, Aaron Hegarty.

Milltown FC

Milltown FC were delighted to welcome Republic of Ireland Women's U17 Head Coach James Scott to the club last Tuesday.

It was a great opportunity for members to gain valuable knowledge from James’ experience given he has worked with boys and girls from grassroots right up to international level.

James had a great chat with Milltown’s youngest members and the academy players had some very interesting questions to ask him.

The Ireland coach implemented a fun, intense session with older players, fol-

lowed by a Q&A.

Milltown FC say they are grateful for the session and appreciate James travelling down from North Tipperary.

The club are also very grateful for the assistance Tommy Griffin has given the club since it was formed in 2022. Tommy has provided fantastic support via the work he put in last year with the Sports Capital Equipment Grant Application, which was recently confirmed as being successful.

This will significantly help the young boys and girls at Milltown FC to develop even further.

DYLAN CROWLEY TOURNAMENT: The Dylan Crowley tournament was held in Gneeveguilla on Saturday last. We played in Division one alongside Firies Rathmore and Kilcummin. Having beaten Rathmore and Firies in the group stage, we lost our last final game to Kilcummin. The draw for the semi-final saw us up against Firies once again. Having won this, we progressed to the final. Rathmore provided the opposition in the final and was victorious on the day. Unfortunately for some of our boys, this was their second year losing the Division 1 final to the same opposition, and Rathmore were worthy winners on the day. Great credit is due to the organisers who, again, this year pull out a great tournament despite the weather. The tournament is a great testament to the memory of Dylan Crowley, his family and the hard-working personal who provide a super day for all the young footballers to show their skill on what is their annual football highlight.

KILCUMMIN LOOKING GOOD: Kilcummin Looking Good were fortunate enough to receive an amount of €1200 from the Community Support Fund 2024 through Kerry County Council and we would like to thank Kerry County Council for their ongoing support for our Community Group and the work that we do throughout the year. These monies have been utilised to allow us to cut branches and some of the willows which were all mulched. This mulch was then used to layer over the adventure trail. We also brought in topsoil for the raised planting beds which has benefited the growth in these beds substantially. We bought paint to enhance the seating in the park and also throughout the village and we also purchased additional shrubs for the village and indeed the park. We are most grateful for the funding that has allowed all this work and improvements to take place.
