17.11.17 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking
Let’s Create Opportunities
For Success IRELAND is still licking its wounds after France won the bid for the 2023 Rugby World Cup this week. But this loss should sharpen our appetite and ensure we continue to dream big and aim high to secure other marquee
events as well as industry for Killarney. It also offers lessons we can learn from when it comes to entrepreneurialism. What do we need to do to attract such events? We missed out this time, so what’s next and what do we need to do to bridge any gap? This brings us to how our financial sector, post-recession, is making it difficult for entrepreneurs to expand on good ideas. A leading Killarney businesman told me how in 2004 he secured a €1 million loan on a handshake. Today for a fraction of the same amount an entre-
preneur would have to jump through hoops and wrestle through a tangle of red tape. While entrepreneurial spirit has not died because of the recession, the recession has changed the financial sector supporting it. But it’s a Catch-22 as money makes things happen. So how do we get these projects off the ground? Killarney is a brand and a business. But we can’t develop the product if we are financially constrained. Just this week veteran tourism commentator Eoghan Corry insisted Ireland mishandled the recession just like it mishandled the boom. “We should have been more outward and more forward looking. We should have been out there
looking at how to compete,” he said. Mr Corry told the Let’s Talk Tourism conference in Killarney that while tourism was performing well, Ireland’s ability to attract visitors from potentially lucrative markets in Germany, France and Italy was “pitiful”. “North America is saving us. We should concentrate our firepower on the higher hanging fruit, including Germany and Italy,” he said. Words we would agree with in a wider context when it comes to events and industry. We need to create opportunity but we need to be able to act on it too. What do you think? Share your opinion by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie
Branching Out In Memory Of Loved Ones ALWAYS one of the most appealing aspects of the festive season in town, the Killarney Memory Tree will be back for the 2017 Christmas season. Lights are lit on the tree, on New Road, to commemorate loved ones who will also be remembered in a special Mass. The official switch-on will take place on New Road on Monday, December 18, at 7pm and all are welcome. Lights can be ordered in memory of a loved one for a suggested donation of €5 and all proceeds will go to Holy Cross Mercy School, New Road. “The
Memory Tree will be lit nightly until January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. Mass will be offered for all those commemorated at 1.30pm on Wednesday, December 20, in St Mary’s Cathedral at our school’s Christmas Mass. All are welcome to attend,” said Rhonda Healy of Holy Cross Mercy NS. “Lights are available from local shops, Holy Cross Mercy School, staff members of Holy Cross Mercy School and members of the school’s parents’ association. Thank you for your support.” Contact 064-6631241 for further A scene from the lighting of the Memory Tree last year. Pic: Marie Lyne Kelly information.

TONIGHT our Chatroom will whisk you back in time as we welcome Kevin O’Sullivan, John Cronin and James Murphy who along with Patricia McCarthy have organised an event called Back to the 90s which takes place tomorrow night in McSorley’s. They are doing it in memory of their friend Patrick McSparron,
who lost his life to cystic fibrosis 20 years ago. Tune into The Chatroom as they share memories of Patrick and give a glimpse of 1990s Killarney. Subjects covered include local super band Fourth Dimension as well as the night The Prodigy came to town. Tomorrow’s event, which is not a fancy dress, promises plenty
of nostalgia. Tickets are €10 and all the proceeds will be going to CF Ireland. Tickets are available from: Who’s 4 Shoes on High Street, Carry Out, Muckross Road, and Carry Out, Tralee Road. As always, it’s Killarney’s answer to the Late Late Show so tune in on our website killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page tonight!
Pitching Together For Microtrack
THERE has been a groundswell of support for the Killarney Community Microtrack. A public meeting on Wednesday night attracted huge attendance, with former Kerry goalkeeper Brendan Kealy, a primary school teacher and health advocate, highlighting the benefits of the microtrack. “Members of groups for persons of disability attended and numerous sporting and community groups also,” said Jerry Griffin project co-ordinator. “The committee have demonstrated great stamina and resilience and are ready to build the facility and have been for some time. It was a very positive meeting!” Addressing the gathering, in the Killarney Court Hotel, Mayor of Killarney Municipal District Cllr Niall Kelleher said he was fully behind the project. The group is pursuing grant aid to ensure that phase 1 of the project is completed by mid-year 2018. This phase consists of the athletics track and the Astro pitch; however grant aid will be specifically focused on the athletics track part of the project. The group has raised €100k already and will have a gap to close privately, but will do so once the green light for grant aid can be achieved in March. “We have been very resilient in our pursuit of Leader grant aid and have the support of elected representatives,” said Mr Griffin. “It should be noted that the group has reduced the amount of aid it is seeking, it could under the rules apply for €200k but is now seeking under half of that to ensure no barrier is in the way of this pro-active group from the community.” See more in the video https://vimeo.com/user21202631

Parking Problem
Solved! Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Damien Switzer/KC Print KILLARNEY’S chronic parking shortage causes congestion and means certain areas are no-go zones during busy times. And as land in Killarney is very expensive, wouldn’t it make sense to look upwards? During our series on parking problems and traffic congestion in August, we highlighted an expert opinion which suggested that a strategically placed multi-storey car park could help resolve parking and congestion issues in one fell swoop. So, the team at Killarney Advertiser set ourselves the challenge to dream up a wish list for the perfect town-centre car park and creative director Damien Switzer came up with the above design. We chose the central location of the Glebe car park and imagined what a multi-storey car park could look like there – loaves and fishes style, this concept turns two acres into six, and triples the existing number
of parking spaces as it shows us what a super-mall could look like in the heart of Killarney. We’re thinking a multinational anchor tenant and a sleek glass façade which would ensure the premises does not have the appearance of a car park – yet would provide three low-rise storeys of parking space. Our deluxe building, offering a mix of retail and residential facilities as well as parking, would boast a rooftop garden café – ideal for sipping lattes and drinking in Killarney’s world-famous views. Such a development would bring much-needed jobs and additional accommodation to the town. As well as providing a recreational and civic area, the apartments there would also include a social housing allocation. A public-private partnership would be the Top and centre, our images of what a multi-storey car park and mall hub would correct way to proceed, according to ex- look like at the Glebe car park space and bottom, a photo by Eammonn Keogh pert advice. of the existing Glebe car park.

Sister Act Goes By The Book Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Valerie O’Sullivan
AWARD-WINNING Killarney photographer Valerie O’Sullivan gives a rare insight into the daily lives of residents of the only monastery for Cistercian women in Ireland. A Year in the Life - Glencairn Abbey is a glossy publication that hit the shelves this week and, through words and a series of electrifying images by Valerie, gives a mesmerising account of the Sisters of St Mary’s Abbey, Glencairn, Co Waterford. “There is a mysticism and rhythm to their daily life, which is also intertwined with the seasons of nature and liturgies of the year. Their life is a true living monas-
tic journey, fulfilling the motto of St Benedict, ‘ora et labora’ - to work is to pray,” Valerie told Killarney Advertiser. The book is published by Columba Press, Dublin, and is also a fundraiser for St Mary’s Abbey Building Project. Founded in 1932, St Mary’s Abbey formed a portion of the episcopal lands held by the Celtic monks of Lismore. “Monastic life at Glencairn Abbey calls the Sisters to prayer seven times a day, The Abbess at Glencairn Mother Marie Fahy, leads the women to pray, with vigils, at 4.10am being the first office of the day,” added Valerie.

National STEM Accolades For Kerry TWO young Kerry scientists have been honoured at national level. Jack Nagle and Timothy McGrath, third and fourth year students at Killorglin Community College, have both been awarded Excellence in STEM awards at SciFest 2017 in Dublin for their inventions. Jack Nagle designed a tractor safety lock that uses a power cir-
cuit to automatically engage the handbrake when it senses that the tractor is empty. His motivation for this project came after his grandfather died following a tractor accident where the handbrake was not engaged. Timothy McGrath designed a special pair of glasses for the blind that use ultrasonic sensors to identify object in their path.

wonderful evening that will also include entertainment.” “The soirées are open to couples and any particular groupings you can think of, such as families, colleagues, friends, clubs and organisations.” Guests will be warmly welcomed with a glass of Prosecco. Organised by Killarney Rotarian James Tarrant with sponsorship from Portwest, it generated €2,500 for the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus, with the proceeds being presented this Sunday evening at the clubhouse. “We were delighted with how successful it was, everyone enjoyed it and we plan to hold it again next year,” James told Killarney Advertiser.

Eve Kelliher highlights the community’s calls for action at accident blackspot
‘Bypass Accident Changed My Life’ MONEY shouldn’t be an issue when you’re talking about people’s lives. That was the comment made by a Killarney woman who told us how her life changed when she was involved in a serious accident on the Killarney Bypass road. Ciara Irwin Foley is one of a number of people whose stories we have shared in Killarney Advertiser’s long-running campaign for safety at the junction regarded locally as one of the most dangerous in Ireland. We started this campaign in January and are continuing it until needs be. “I still have panic attacks every time I
come to the junction,” said Ciara. “My life changed the day I had a head-on collision there. I live on the Kilcummin side and unfortunately there is no avoiding this area.” She says she feels lucky to be alive after the accident, which occurred several years go. Ciara, who was driving from the Cork Road side in the direction of the Cleeny Roundabout, was hit by a car turning from the bypass onto Lewis Road.
“At the time my three children were quite young – the youngest only two – and I feel lucky to have walked away alive from it and that I am here to tell the tale,” she told Killarney Advertiser. However, unsurprisingly, the experience has taken its toll. “Even driving in the area now gives me a sense of panic, sometimes I am petrified, ” she said.
Ciara feels a good solution would be to create an underpass from Lewis Road to the other side, similar to the system in operation in Rathkeale, Co Limerick. The fact that Killarney is a tourist town, with many visiting drivers, is another key reason that the area needs to be redesigned, she added. “The danger is magnified, when motorists using left-hand drive vehicles are trying to enter or exit the bypass,” she said. “There have been islands added at the junction area in the intervening years since my accident, but in my opinion that makes things worse.” Pic: Eamonn Keogh
‘The Time For Action Is Now’ AS THE community cries out for safety at the Killarney Bypass Road/ Lewis Road junction, yesterday the Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Niall Kelleher, and Killarney woman Suzanne Mannix Dennehy travelled to Dublin to hand deliver two petitions on the matter to the Department of Transport and to Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Suzanne’s sister Annette tragically lost her life in an accident on the Killarney bypass in May. During her funeral a petition organised by Annette’s family garnered huge support. Mayor Kelleher started a petition a fortnight ago and gathered a thousand signatures alone when he attended the Munster club football semi-final at the Dr Crokes grounds on Lewis Road on Sunday. Between them, the pair presented over 5,000 signatures to the Department of
Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland. “I am deeply concerned that more lives will be lost at that junction and the next one could be that of a child, considering how many clubs have facilities there,” said Ms Dennehy. “The time for action is now.” During their visit to the Department of Transport yesterday, Mayor Kelleher and Ms Dennehy discussed their concerns with Carol Hunt, the special advisor to the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross. “The meeting was very positive, she listened as we explained how this is quite simply Ireland’s biggest accident blackspot,” Mayor Kelleher told Killarney Advertiser. “She gave a commitment to bringing the matter to the Minister. Whatever happens, we want to maintain people power and keep campaigning. If we hear nothing this side of Christmas we will ratchet it up in January.”
Collecting signatures on the petitions were front, Linda Gordon, Siofra Dennehy and Cllr John Joe Culloty. Back from left are Jim Doherty, John Lyne and his dog ‘Fletch’, Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher, Pa McGillycuddy and Suzanne Dennehy. Pic: Eamonn Keogh

Santa To Ring In The Season With Sonata
LEADING international pianist Santa Ignace promises a passionate performance of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, at Intermediate School Killorglin on December 1. Santa, who lived in Killarney for over ten years, is currently lecturing at CIT, Cork School of Music and at The Royal Conservatory of Scotland, Glasgow, as well as tak-
ing part in a very special Female Conducting Programme at the National Concert Hall, Dublin. She will begin the recital with Leopold Godowsky’s Passacaglia. Vladimir Horowitz, one of the most renowned pianists of all times, claimed that this complex composition is actually impossible to play, but Santa fully intends to
prove him wrong. She will finish the recital, on the magnificent ISK Steinway, with a dazzling rendition of Mephisto Waltz No 1 by Franz Liszt. Tickets are available in advance from Variety Sounds, Killarney, Killarney School of Music, Paul Sherry, Killarney Outlet Centre, or ISK Killorglin. For more information visit: www.santaignace.com. Fundraiser
‘Amazing’ Response To Fundraising Campaign For Injured Teenager AN IMPRESSIVE €118,574 has been raised in support of a Killarney teenager seriously injured in a cycling accident and his family. The Ian O’Connell Benefit Fund was organised by Spa GAA club and numerous other sporting and voluntary organisations, including anglers and golfers, on both sides of the Kerry/Cork border, also became actively involved. Ian, aged 16, of Pinewood Estate, Killarney, suffered damage to his neck and spine after falling from his bike in the Muckross area of Killarney National Park, on August 16 last. He is currently being treated in Dublin’s Mater Hospital. The St Brendan’s College student is a juvenile footballer with Spa GAA club, a hurler with Dr Crokes and also plays with Killarney Celtic soccer club. Chairman of the Spa fund-raising committee James Gleeson said “something amazing” had happened in recent weeks and the amount raised had surpassed all expectations. “Starting out, we thought around €20,000 might be collected, but the
Spa GAA Club secretary Deirdre O’Sullivan Darcy, chairman Gerard Mangan and fundraiser chairman Jim Gleeson present the Ian O’Connell Trust Fund cheque to Michael O’Connell in the clubhouse.
way the campaign took off was incredible,” he said. “It showed the extraordinary level of respect for Ian and his family. It also
showed how effective the GAA network is and the feeling of goodwill on both sides of the Blackwater. Many other organisations and schools also
became involved. It was truly staggering.” Speaking at a function in the Spa club, Mr Gleeson thanked all who supported the fund and the media and also said there had been significant anonymous donations. Most of the money was collected through a special lotto fundraiser by the Spa club. Funds have been transferred to a trust fund to be administered by three trustees on behalf of the club. Races News Briefs ... Killarney On A Winner With Extra Day Kerry Punter Hits Jackpot
HOT on the heels of a punter from this county who turned their €1 EuroMillions bet into €33,0001, another Kerry native has hit the jackpot, this time from their racing bets. The customer had a €1 Lucky 15 and a €2.50 each way accumulator on the same four horses across the cards at Doncaster, Naas and Aintree. The selections were Dream Of Dreams at 5/1 in the 2.05 at Doncaster, Mossback at 33/1 in the 3.30, Baby King at 7/2 in the 3.25 and On Tour at 4/1 in the 2.15, both at Aintree. The Lucky 15 returned €8,892.40 and the Accumulator returned €11,604.20, seeing combined total winnings of €20,496.60. Aoife Heffron, BoyleSports, said: “Kerry has been hit with a stroke of good luck it seems, after one punter won €33,0001 in the EuroMillions on Friday and a racing punter scooped €20,496.40 on Saturday.”
KILLARNEY Races has backed a winner in its campaign to extend the racing season at the local track. It has been confirmed that another day of top quality racing has been approved for 2018 and the flagship July festival is to be extended to a five-day event, commencing on Sunday, July 15. Securing the additional day of racing had been one of the main priorities set by the new Chairman of Killarney Race Company, Gerard Coughlan, who has been anxious to build on the success of the existing four-day festival that had been attracting record attendances. “We had been striving for a fifth day of racing in July and the fact that it has been approved is fantastic news for Killarney,” Mr Coughlan remarked. The newly appointed chairman said the races contribute enormously to Killar-

about 3800 BC. The Neolithic tomb underwent a major excavation and restoration programme in 2015 and the artefacts found have been the subject of intensive scientific scrutiny. The techniques used in these tests and the results are showcased for the first time during Science Week, which runs until Sunday, November 19. Tomorrow, Saturday, November 18, you can learn all about how pottery was made thousands of years ago for the purpose of
holding the cremated remains of our ancestors buried at Killaclohne. Ceramicist Lone Beiter O’Reilly will give this demonstration, which is free of charge, at the Denny Street museum. It takes place from 11am to 4pm. Normal admission fee applies, adults, €5, children go free. This event is suitable for children of all ages, and no booking is required. Over four days speakers and facilitators have showcased what archaeological
science can tell us about our ancestors based on finds from Killaclohane. County archaeologist Dr Michael Connolly outlined the dig, describing tools and techniques used. Osteoarchaeologist Dr Linda Lynch discussed what extraordinary information can be gleaned from a handful of cremated bone found at the dig. US-based visiting researcher Kendra Sirak showcased the ability to extract, sequence and analyse ancient DNA.

Picture This Rock Killarney
HITS such as Take My Hand and Addicted to You were being hummed all the way out the Muckross Road last Friday and Saturday evening as a steady procession of Picture This fans made their musical way to the INEC. It was the fastest-ever act to sell out the venue in July and the two concerts by
the Irish sensation at the weekend lived up to every expectation. Due to the unprecedented demand, the INEC added a second date back in July. Hailing from Athy, Co Kildare, Jimmy Rainsford and Ryan Hennessy joined forces at the end of October 2015. Upon hearing Ryan’s unique voice after spotting him per-
forming in local pubs and venues, Jimmy invited Ryan to join him in his studio to record some tracks. After quickly hitting it off the duo decided to make the partnership more permanent and Picture This was born. They grabbed the attention of the nation when an iPhone video of their track
Take My Hand went viral. This and many more numbers such as You & I and Never Change rocked the INEC last Friday and Saturday, with revellers enjoying the new VIP Lounge at the venue before the concert.

Hearing Loss In Children: What You Need To Know
Nothing can quite prepare us for a serious health problem or condition, particularly when it comes to our children, according to Audiology Medical Services HEARING difficulty or loss can be particularly baffling and frustrating for parents – if you can’t communicate properly with them, how are you to know what they are feeling or thinking? The important thing to remember, however, is that there are professionals and services who can help you and your child. Hearing difficulty can be classed into four main categories: mild, moderate, severe and profound.
Mild A child with mild hearing loss is likely to display difficulty following speech, especially in noisy situations. It can also be difficult for them to hear certain speech sounds; as a result, their speech development may be affected.
Moderate A child with moderate hearing loss displays much the same symptoms as a child in the “mild” category, only here, they may also have difficulty hearing other quiet noises.
Severe A child with severe hearing loss may struggle to hear speech, even in quiet surroundings. They may also be unable to hear environmental noise such as traffic, and could find it difficult to develop speech without amplification.
Profound A child with profound hearing loss is unlikely to be able to hear most sounds, unless they are very loud. The child will be una-
ware of speech sounds, and will be unable to develop speech without amplification. As some patients find hearing aids to be less effective, they may need to consider cochlear implants.
Irish sensation Picture This preforming in the INEC on Friday.
Getting Diagnosed If you are concerned that your child may have hearing difficulty or loss, you need to investigate the situation. The best option is to book a hearing assessment for your child, with a trained professional. Prepare in advance by making a note of your concerns and any questions. Bring a trusted friend or loved one with you for moral support. After listening to your concerns, the audiologist will explain what is going to happen during the assessment in simple, easy-to-understand terms. They will then carry out an age-appropriate tests, providing feedback and recommendation as well as a list of resources for your own reference. While your child’s assessment results can be overwhelming, it’s important to know that there is plenty you can do to help. Audiology Medical Services provide expert, comprehensive child-centred and family-friendly diagnostic audiological assessment of infants, children and adolescents. For more information, or to book an assessment call 1800 501 501 or visit www.audiologymedicalservices.ie for more information.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Opinion

Trial By Twitter Is Not Justice WE MUST ask whose fault it is that the behaviour of Harvey Weinstein and others similarly accused seems to have continued unchallenged for so long. The downfall of the movie mogul has sparked an inferno of allegations on both sides of the Atlantic but we must also question the role social media users have to play as they add fuel to the fire – with those flames destroying random careers. Careers that are currently being burnt at the stake courtesy of trial by Twitter. And long before social media arrived on the scene, there was, of course, that smouldering culture of silence. It is that culture that allowed all these alleged offences continue for so long.
Whose fault was that? Harvey Weinstein has so many allegations against him – of harassment and assault, of rape, and the systematic silencing of his victims. He has “unequivocally denied” any allegations of non-consensual sex. The Weinstein Company fired Weinstein when the world found out he was a sexual predator. Yet according to the testimonies of 16 separate former and current executives, his behaviour was widely known, both at the Weinstein Company and Miramax. So we have a culture where people potentially in the legal sphere, friends, and both male and female bystanders, knew. A wink, wink, nudge,
nudge culture. And we’d all like to think society has evolved so much since then. Not a chance. Today’s culture of social media-obsessed self-appointed insta-judge and jury is no better than what went before. Obviously, no one wants to see anyone guilty of any such crimes go unpunished. But the free for all on social media smacks of mob rule at its most medieval. No one wants to see anyone exploited or victimised in any way but let’s allow justice to run through the proper legal channels. Not through Twitter, and not through Facebook.
Varadkar & Healy-Rae Clash Over Driver Changes OF THE 13 young people with learner driver permits who have died on the roads so far in 2017, 11 of them were driving unaccompanied, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar told the Dáil last week. His comments came as the Government was accused of “criminalising ordinary decent young people” under new proposals to prosecute car owners who permit learner drivers to use vehicles unaccompanied. During Order of Business in the Dáil, Independ-
ent Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae said: “At a time when there are is considerable waiting times for tests you are criminalising ordinary decent young people, who want to get educated, who are trying to go to work. You are talking about people getting up in the morning. These are young students who are trying to go to work to better themselves and pay for their education.” Mr Healy-Rae added: “You are hurting these people and people who don’t have a public transport facility in
their area. They have to use the mother or father’s car or an uncle or aunt’s car. “How did you come along with this announcement yesterday out of the blue? You made this announcement on a day when the trains were not going, that you are going to criminalise ordinary, decent respectable people.” Mr Varadkar said that the measures are being brought forward as an amendment to the Road Traffic Bill. He added: “Thirteen people, mainly

young men and young women, who have learner permits dies on our roads so far this year. Of the 13 young men and women who died on our roads so far this year, 11 of them were driving unaccompanied. “Perhaps if they had complied with the law and been accompanied, they would still be alive today.” Under the proposals approved by the Government, for the first time car owners who permit learner drivers to use their vehicles unaccompanied face prosecution.

Donald Trump Reverses Ban On Elephant Trophy Imports Into US US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has agreed to allow legally hunted elephant trophies to be imported to the United States from two African countries. President Trump’s administration has reversed a Barack Obama-era ban on the remains of elephants killed in Zimbabwe and Zambia entering the US, arguing it can actually boost conservation efforts. The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) said “the hunting and management programs for African elephants will enhance the survival of the species in the wild”. “Legal, well-regulated sport hunting as part of a sound management program can benefit the conservation of certain species by providing incentives to local communities to conserve the species and

by putting much-needed revenue back into conservation,” a spokesperson said. African elephants are listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act with their population declining by 111,000 in the last decade due in large part to poaching, the WWF says. “Additional killing of elephants in these countries, even if legal, is not sustainable and is not currently supporting conservation efforts that contribute towards the recovery of the species,” they said at the time. The change in policy was announced by Safari Club International, who filed a lawsuit challenging the ban, along with the National Rifle Association, in 2014. Critics have called the move “jarring”, with The Humane Society (THS), an international animal protection organisation, citing a “lack of information about how money derived from trophy hunting by US hunters is distributed within Zimbabwe”.
BOB GELDOF called Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi “a hand maiden to genocide” on Monday as he returned his Freedom of the City of Dublin award in protest over his fellow recipient’s response to the repression of Rohingya Muslims. The musician and activist told RTÉ: “I don’t want to be on a very select roll of wonderful people with a killer. Someone who is at best a handmaiden to genocide and an accomplice to murder.” More than 600,000 Muslims from Myanmar’s Rakhine state have fled to refugee camps in Bangladesh after military operations described by the United Nations as ethnic cleansing.
Their plight has drawn outrage around the world. But Suu Kyi, long seen as a champion of human rights, has been criticized for failing to speak out against violence. There have been calls for her to be stripped of the Nobel Peace Prize she won in 1991. Suu Kyi was given the Freedom of Dublin in 1999 while she was held under house arrest by Mayanmar’s then military government. She received her award at a reception in Ireland in 2012, two years after her release. The former Boomtown Rats singer was given an honorary knighthood in 1986 in recognition of his charity work, including organizing the 1985 Live Aid concert.

Was France Win The Worst Possible Result For Ireland? Sebastien Chabal appears with Brayley and Dhyreille Lomu, the sons of late All Blacks winger Jonah Lomu.
AS FRANCE beat South Africa into second place in the bid for the 2023 Rugby World Cup, questions were asked: Was this the worst possible outcome for the Irish team bid? RTÉ reports how this result means the competition is likely to head south in 2027. But IRFU chief executive Philip

Browne insisted it was too soon to discuss future bids and there is a general feeling that Ireland may have missed its chance. The French success means that the Rugby World Cup will have remained north of the equator for three tournaments running by 2023 and it is close to inconceivable that it wouldn’t take a trip south for 2027. In particular, South Africa will feel they are due the competition, having won the technical recommendation this time around before being refused for a fourth successive occasion.

Killarney Jarveys Brush Up On Cantonese A CHINESE takeaway with a difference is on the menu and it is certainly whetting the appetite of the tourism industry. Tens of thousands of big-spending visitors from China are expected to flock here in unprecedented numbers in the coming years and the huge influx has the potential to revolutionise the hotel and hospitality industry. Ryanair’s newly appointed Chief Operations Officer, Peter Bellew, who has spent the past two years at the helm of Malaysia Airlines, said expected greater connectivity between Ireland and China is likely to result in growth of between 40 and 60 per cent in Chinese tourists visiting Europe in the next two to three years and all indications are that they are determined to visit Ireland. “They love coming to Ireland, particularly the west of Ireland and, boy, do they spend money when they come here,” Mr Bellew told the National Tourism Forum Let’s Talk Tourism conference in the Brehon Hotel, Killarney on Friday. He said Chinese holidaymakers prefer a better class of luxury hotel and they are very big spenders when they arrive. “Never in my life have I seen a greater opportunity in terms of tourism than the Chinese market. There have been 25 million new
passports issued there in just a year, they are crying out to travel and their government is telling them to travel,” he told the gathering of Irish tourism leaders via satellite link from his current base in Malaysia. Mr Bellew said the government now needs to invest in promoting Ireland in China and, he stressed, the Chinese are ready and willing to do business and have no problems paying their bills. “They are the world’s top tourism spenders, much bigger than the USA and we are only scratching the surface. The total revenue raised from China would be greater than all other markets put together,” he added. The new Ryanair Chief Operations Officer said, however, that Ireland’s tourist industry would need to adequately prepare for the expected mass influx. “The food in China is nothing like you would get in a Chinese takeaway in Killarney but it’s simple food and one or two days of training would be all that‘s required,” he said. More local tourism workers will also need to learn to speak Chinese as a matter of priority and, Mr Bellew remarked: “My experience is that we can expect the jarveys up in the Gap of Dunloe in Killarney to be fluent in Chinese and Cantonese by Christmas 2019.”

But, somehow, circumstances conspire against her. Boyd examines her complicated relationship with her divorced parents in a story that has sharp humour. My pick of this bunch of short stories is the exhilarating tale The Van-
ishing Game: An Adventure and its ludicrous premise — an actor unwittingly becomes involved in a sinister car chase. He must employ skills he honed in movie roles to outwit the bad guys. Not quite as hilarious are the justifications of serial adulterer Luke Abernathy, in The Man Who Liked Kissing Women.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,
Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
MANAGEMENT COMPANIES If you purchase property in a multi-unit development an Owner’s Management Company (OMC) should legally own the common areas and be responsible for its upkeep. An OMC is established for three main reasons namely to manage and maintain the common areas; to be the legal owner of the common areas on behalf of the individual owners of the units and to be the legal with the benefit of the reversionary interest in each unit. Since the enactment of the Multi Unit Development Act, 2011, all new Multi Unit Developments are required to have an OMC in place before the first unit is sold. In the case of Multi Unit Developments completed before the Act was enacted, developers are legally obliged to establish an OMC. OMCs must operate in accordance with company law and the same rules that apply to other commercial companies apply. This includes but is not limited to filing returns with the Company Registration Office (CRO), the holding of AGMs, their accordance to trade solvency and to keep proper books of account. If an OMC is not managed correctly, it may be struck off the Registrar of Companies by the CRO. This can lead to significant difficulties for the onward sale of individual units. When a purchaser purchases a unit in a Multi Unit Development, they become members of the OMC. This provides legal rights and obligations on the individual owner. A member of the OMC shall have a say in how the common areas are managed. As a
member, a purchaser has the right to adequate notice of company general meetings, information regarding the companies operations and finances and the right to participate in both in annual general meetings. There is one vote per unit. The company is required to hold an AGM at least once a year and all members must be invited to attend. The company must also file annual returns with the Company Registration Office. As a member you are also entitled to express an interest in becoming a director. As a member of an OMC, you are obliged to pay management fees and to pay sinking fund contributions and to be bound by rules pertaining to the development. However it is of critical importance that prior to purchasing any Unit in a Multi Unit Development that these issues are fully investigated and understood by potential purchasers. Significant difficulties can arise in respect of the non payment of management fees or in the event that a Management Company is struck off from the Company Registrar which can lead to significant title difficulties. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such, In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

Rowing Together Since 1868
OVERALL 2017 was a successful year for Commercial Rowing Club. At the recent annual general meeting of the club, held in the International Hotel, I outlined how the club bridged a 37-year gap by winning the novice sixes race at the Killarney Regatta and for the first time in many years the club had a ladies crew competing. I would like to pay tribute to the members of the various crews and their cox Siobhan Joy. We also welcome incoming secretary
Maureen O’Donoghue. The club, which was established in 1868, saw various improvements completed during the year which included the laying of a pathway and erection of two entrance gates to the clubhouse, We extend a special word of appreciation to the Killarney Municipal District Council for their grant of €500 for such improvements and

Letters WITH regards to comments attributed to Cllr Brendan Cronin in an article by Anne Lucey in last week’s edition (November 10) re the provision of a burial ground for the town of Killarney and that the Killarney Municipal District council had managed where the former town council had failed I would like to point out that on a few occasions the town council identified suitable sites only not to have been brought to fruition by the management of the county council. The provision of a graveyard for Killarney was the remit of Kerry County Council not

It was a reserved function of the county council, of which Cllr Cronin was a member, and to claim that the Municipal delivered where the former town council failed is not accurate. The Municipal District of course now is governed by the county council hence the county has at least provided a cemetery even if its in a place contrary to the wishes of most Killarney people. No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather And you’re not there, We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart. The sorrow we feel, We can never explain, And the ache in our hearts Will always remain. Love your heartbroken son Mike, Rachel and granddaughter Dayna.

If roses grow in Heaven Lord Please pick a bunch for me Place them in Mena’s arms And tell her they’re from me. 3RD ANNIVERSARY DOOLEY
In loving memory of Philomena Dooley, 95 Forest Close, Ballyspillane Killarney who died on the 23rd of November, 2014. God saw two hard-working hands getting tired, And a golden heart of love, We knew it was no wonder, He wanted you above. It broke our hearts to loose you, Knowing you’re not here, But in our hearts we keep you always very near. Knowing we could do nothing but watch you from a chair. A mother like you could not be replaced Jolly old laughter, A smile on your face, To lose you so fast, But I know you’re near. Now this year later I know..... I had the world’s wonders at home with me once..... Her memory is in my heart.... Her wit lives forever.... She cannot be replaced. She’ll always be my beautiful mother. From Mary, Jonathan and girls.
We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new, We thought of you yesterday, And the days before that too. We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, Now all we have is memories, And your picture in a frame, Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part, God has you in his keeping, We have you in our hearts. Remembered and loved by your granddaughter Elaine.
You left us broken hearted Not knowing what to do But now we find such comfort In memories of you The legacy you left us Was of happiness and love And that shines on forever From the glorious skies above You brought joy and beauty From the moment of your birth Now in heaven your an angel Just as you were on earth Love Mom, Dad, brother Cian and family. Anniversary mass will be celebrated on Thursday 23rd November at 7.30pm in Muckross Church

NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Garden Magic Inside Out THE days are getting shorter, and colder, and while there is always a lot to do in any garden, I thought this week I would turn my attention indoors. I have gotten some questions relating to houseplants, and, even though I grow many, I rarely think about them! The main question people ask is a very broad one: How do I look after my houseplant? Well, indoor plants have the same requirements as those outdoors, light, water and nutrients. A general rule of thumb is to keep plants out of direct sunlight, often a south-facing windowsill will cause leaves to scorch. However, there are exceptions such as geraniums, Kalanchoe, or spider plants. It is wise to have a look at the tag on the plant. Most indoor plants need to be watered sparingly, there is no set timing for it, though. How often you need to water will depend on the temperature and humidity of the house. The easiest way to water houseplants is by sitting them in a basin of water for half an hour, draining them and putting them back in their decorative pot. Again there are exceptions, cacti and succulents need to dry out now and again, simulating their natural environment. Similarly, if your plant is a tropical one it may need high humidity. Orchids are one example of a plant needing humidity. They draw in their moisture through epiphytic roots. This is why they are always planted in soil which has a very rough texture. It needs to be free draining yet moisture retentive. It is a good idea to place your orchids on a dish with gravel, filled with water, so that the water can evaporate keeping the orchid humid. A liquid fertiliser can be added to the water every two-three weeks in the growing season, and every six weeks in the winter. Alternatively use slow-release fertiliser, or fertiliser sticks. If possible, use rainwater to water your plants, as it is softer and there are no chemicals such as chlorine in it. Indoor plants are not only pretty to look at, but they also filter the air. NASA have done several studies into the effect of indoor plants on the air quality inside, and published its first list of airfiltering plants in 1989. The results are quite astounding. Plants can remove all sorts of common chemicals in the air, such as benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and ammonia. Spider plants, ferns, peace lily, Anthuriums and ivy are all on NASA’s. The research shows one plant per 10 square metres will do the job. So, consider taking a plant into the office, especially if you suffer from headaches, nausea, fatigue or eye irritation – you might be suffering from Sick Building Syndrome, which a spider plant or two can help relieve!

Legion v Crokes: Five Things To Watch Out For Sunday’s semi-final won’t be one for the faint of heart, writes Adam Moynihan
O’Donoghue Cup Semi-Final Killarney Legion v Dr Crokes Sunday, November 19, at 2pm (Fitzgerald Stadium) 1. The best of enemies
Legion versus Crokes is one of the great rivalries in Kerry GAA and Sunday’s O’Donoghue Cup semi-final promises to be another feisty encounter. Crokes have had the upper hand in the last couple of meetings between the sides, defeating their near neighbours in both the County League and Club Championship in 2016. Legion have had Crokes’ number in the not too distant past, however, perhaps most notably when they dumped the holders out of the 2014 County Championship in the third round. Bragging rights are always at stake regardless of the competition but, with a place in the O’Donoghue Cup final up for grabs, the atmosphere at this one should be electric.
2. Contrasting schedules The Crokes players have scarcely had a chance to draw breath in the past year and half and the Legion clash will be their sixth game in as many weeks. Legion, meanwhile, have barely seen competitive action since the County League finished back at the start of September. So who holds the advantage? Do the Crokes have momentum on their side or is there a chance they might be a bit jaded? Are Legion coming in fresh or are they coming in cold? It’s difficult to say but I suppose we’ll find out on Sunday.
3. Will Pat O’Shea have one eye on Munster? Following their comfortable victory over KilmurryIbrickane, Crokes will play Cork champions Nemo Rangers in the Munster Final next weekend. It’s far from ideal to have two crucial fixtures one week after the other and it will be interesting to see whether Pat O’Shea and his management team decide to rest one or two players for the Legion game. It’s a tricky one. The Munster Championship is bound to be priority number one for the Crokes at the moment as it’s obviously a gateway to their main goal: winning another All-Ireland. They would undoubtedly like to go into that one at full strength so it might make sense to leave a couple of regular starters on the bench.
Colm Cooper under pressure from Billy Maguire when the sides met back in 2015. Pic: Eamonn Keogh
On the other hand, losing to Legion would be a bitter pill to swallow, especially as it would hand their fiercest rivals a shot at winning the O’Donoghue Cup. For that reason I can’t see too many big hitters being left out of their line-up on Sunday.
4. An opportunity for Legion Bainisteoir Alan O’Neill has had a successful first year in charge of Legion, guiding the club back into Division 1 on the back of an unblemished league record of eight wins, three draws and no defeats. Losing to Stacks in the County Championship was disappointing but Sunday’s game is a massive opportunity to finish the season off on a high. Of course, they would still need to go on and win
the final for it to be a true success but beating the Crokes would certainly go down a treat.
5. Rathmore await in the final Reigning champions Rathmore secured their passage to another O’Donoghue Cup decider courtesy of a 0-16 to 0-12 win over Gneeveguilla and they’ll be paying close attention to Sunday’s allKillarney semi-final. Aidan O’Mahony and co. are gunning for an incredible four-in-a-row and will rightly fancy their chances regardless of who wins this weekend. They denied Legion in 2014 and 2015 and Crokes in 2016 so I’m sure both town teams would relish the opportunity to get a bit of revenge.

Lakers Hoping For Home Comforts Against Elks
A tough defeat to high-flying Ballincollig has dampened spirits but home floor advantage could be key against Ulster University, writes Adam Moynihan
National League: Division 1 Scotts Lakers v Ulster University Elks Saturday, November 18, at 7.30pm (Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre) THE Scotts Lakers will be hoping for some home comforts on Saturday night as they welcome the Ulster University Elks to the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. Their last home game ended in victory over the Titans of Galway but they were unable to keep the momentum going last weekend as they fell to a disappointing 98-75 loss to third-placed Ballincollig. For the second game in a row, local star Mark Greene was the Lakers’ top scorer with 15 but 29 points from American guard Cameron Clark helped Ballincollig to a comprehensive 23-point victory. The Cork side are quite strong at the moment and have now won seven of their eight league games but the manner of the defeat will come as a blow to coach Vojkan Bencic, who felt as though his team had turned a corner with that win over the Titans. He will be particularly unhappy with the defensive efforts of his players as they allowed Ballincollig to score 98 points, the highest tally any team has managed against them all season. It was undoubtedly a tricky away fixture for the Killarney club but things won’t be getting easier any time soon. On Saturday they face Ulster University who currently sit fourth in the table with an impressive record of 6-3. They hammered Sligo 93-74 last weekend and on
current form you’d have to imagine that they’ll fancy their chances of coming to Killarney and getting a result. The Lakers will have to keep a close eye on West Virginia native Luke Eddy who scored 26 points in that game against Sligo while Darius Surginas and Tomas Banys will also require special attention. Consistency has certainly been an issue for Killarney in their first season back in the big time. Two encouraging wins were followed by four defeats on the bounce and, in the past two weeks, arguably their best performance of the season preceded one of their worst, so it’s difficult to know what to expect on Saturday. Looking at the overall table, they currently find themselves eighth of 14 with a record of 3-5 (9 points). With the league being split into two at the end of the current round of fixtures and six teams currently maintaining winning records, the Lakers might need seven wins (21 points) to have a chance of making the top half. That would require four wins from their last five games. It’s a tall order but they’ve already shown in flashes that they can mix it with the very best. Saturday’s game against Ulster University is a great opportunity to make a statement and get their campaign back on track.
Intense Pace As Ballincollig Take Control SCOTTS Lakers suffered their heaviest loss of the season when they were comprehensively defeated by Ballincollig in Ballincollig Community School last Saturday afternoon. The Cork side took control of this match late in the first quarter and never looked back. Scotts Lakers actually started well with three-pointers from Philip O’Connor and Mark Greene and were 14-10 ahead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Antuan Bootle had also made his presence felt on the scoreboard but Ballincollig were shooting well from threepoint range through Cameron Clarke and Pere Tres and the home side led 23-18 at the end of the first quarter. Ballincollig adopted a full court press after every score early in the second quarter and it was a tactic that proved successful forcing a series of turnovers. These turnovers quickly translated into scores and the home side gradually took control of the game. The intensity level had stepped up as the match
was played at a fast and furious pace. Ballincollig coach Kieran O’Sullivan (former league winner with Tralee Tigers) rotated his players with great effect as Ballincollig raced into a 50-32 lead at half-time. Scotts Lakers actually responded well early in the third quarter with scores from Mark Greene, Antuan Bootle and Andrew Fitzgerald. However it was short-lived as Ballincollig got their scoring machine back on track, particularly through American Cameron Clarke. Mihail Kapitanov hit form, with a big three-pointer to keep the Lakers in touch but Ballincollig were also piling on their own three-pointers and led 72-49 at the end of the third quarter. Despite the huge mountain to climb and the gap in the scoreline, Scotts Lakers never gave up with Mihail Kapitanov sinking a brace of three-pointers and a similar number of two-pointers. However Ballincollig were never going to be caught and matched everything that Lakers threw at them. In the end the home side had a comfortable 23 points to spare.
Words: Eamonn Keogh A remarkable 15 three-pointers by the home side spread across seven different players was a significant factor in the victory as Lakers struggled to match this high percentage shooting return and actually missed 15 three-pointer attempts while converting just seven from 22 attempted three-pointers. The Killarney side’s strengths probably revolve more on an inside game rather than trying to match teams from three-point land. Big Padraig Lucey was missed under the boards for this game but American Antuan Bootle is one of the biggest and strongest players in the league and the likes of Andrew Fitzgerald and Dan Griffin also offer good support here. Ballincollig: Cameron Clarke 25 Pere Tres 14, Ronan O’Sullivan 16, Ciarán O’Sullivan 11. Scotts Lakers: Mark Greene 15 points, Antuan Bootle 14, Mihail Kapitanov 13 Andrew Fitzgerald 12, Cian Clernon 6, Philip O’Connor 5, Padraig Weldon 4, Dylan O’Sullivan 4, Justin Tuason 2.

Dr Crokes Advance To Munster Club Final
Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald THE Dr Crokes senior team just continues winning. In home territory on Sunday last they brushed aside the challenge of newly crowned Clare champions KilmurryIbrickane (KIB) to win this Munster Club SFC semifinal setting up a final date with Nemo Rangers. It was one-way traffic all the way in this 2-19 to 0-10 victory. Crokes have won 17 championship games and this is their 14th consecutive win in Munster. They have met the Clare men on four occasions in recent years and they have been victorious in all of the games. On a splendidly prepared pitch and in front of a big attendance Crokes asserted superiority from the outset, especially at midfield where Johnny Buckley reigned supreme even against a third midfielder employed by the Clare side. Buckley won everything in the air, just not Shane Murphy’s kick-outs but also those by Ian McInerney from the Clare kick outs. Fittingly Buckley strode in to one of the Crokes attacks and scored the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. Ambrose O’Donovan, his midfield partner, was deservedly black carded after 18 minutes and Tony Brosnan was his replacement. At half-time Crokes led 1-11 to 0-4, but this 10-point lead should have been much greater. They missed out on a further 2-4.
Cooper; subs: T Brosnan for O’Donovan (18 minutes, black card); J O’Leary for Murphy (27, inj); S Doolan for Looney (46); P Clarke for K O’Leary (50); J Lyne for Quinn (52); E Brosnan for Cooper (55).

The award winning Healthy Clubs Project (HCP) aims to turn clubs into hubs for health in their communities. With almost the same number of GAA clubs as GPs across Ireland, the project offers a new setting in which to deliver health promotion and interventions A special ceremony with governmental representation in Croke Park saw 58 GAA clubs recognised as the first official ‘Healthy Clubs’ on the island of Ireland. Thirteen Munster GAA clubs, including Beaufort and Tralee Parnells in Kerry, can now proudly fly a flag above their grounds (endorsed by both Healthy Ireland and the Public Health Agency in NI), letting their members and communities know that they value health and wellbeing as much as leagues and championships.

Sean Kavanagh Former Tyrone football captain Seán Cavanagh is a big supporter of the GAA’s Healthy Club Project (HCP) and presented the clubs with their official flag and plaque in Croke Park on Saturday, November 4. He said “I’ve seen myself how the GAA brings communities together in so many different ways so it’s fantastic to see the association taking a leadership role in developing healthier communities. The Healthy Clubs around the country are having a positive impact on so many children and young people and as a parent I think it is fantastic. Through this project I think people will start to appreciate the role of the GAA in our communities even more.”

Star play by Buddy David O’Leary and Gavin White were magnificent in defence confining KIB to a mere four points. Crokes ‘keeper Shane Murphy was taken off in the 27th minute after a dangerous high tackle from Keelan Sexton. He was replaced between the posts by Johnny O’Leary in a seamless transition. O’Leary did well when he came on. The contest was really over at half time and even with the aid of a strong wind blowing in to the town end Crokes responded well to the two early second half points by the Clare men. Colm Cooper kept kicking over those frees. In all he scored nine points, six from frees. Kieran O’Leary was first to pounce on a ball that the KIB keeper failed to deal with. Another goal for Crokes. Time to empty the bench. Shane Doolan, Paul Clarke, Jonathan Lyne and the ageless veteran Eoin Brosnan came on for game time as Crokes cruised in to yet another Munster Club final. Full forward Mark McCarthy was the best of the loser’s side. They will meet Nemo Rangers their old Cork rivals in that final on Sunday, October 26. Nemo outclassed Adare 2-17 to 0-4 in their semi-final. No rest for Crokes as they meet Legion their fellow town rivals on Sunday in the O’Donoghue Cup semi-final. The throw in time is 2pm. Rathmore have already qualified for the final just edging out Gneeveguilla in last Saturday’s semi-final. Scorers for Dr Crokes: C Cooper (0-9, 6 frees); K O’Leary (1-1); J Buckley (1-0); M Burns, G O’Shea (0-2 each); D O’Leary, G White, B Looney, D Casey, T Brosnan (0-1 each). Sebastian Vettel Wins Brazilian Grand Prix IT WAS all about who got the best start at last Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel had it, starting from the second spot on the grid. Pole sitter Valtteri Bottas didn’t, and it probably cost the Mercedes driver the race. The victory solidified Vettel’s hold on second place in the championship standings after Lewis Hamilton clinched the title in Mexico.
Hamilton started last after crashing in qualifying on the first lap, but managed to push his way into contention, staying out longer before pitting than the other leaders. Bottas finished second with Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari taking third.
Hamilton was fourth, just 5.4 seconds behind Vettel. Vettel has 302 points with the final race in Abu Dhabi. Thirdplace Bottas has 280. Even if Bottas wins in Abu Dhabi, Vettel can take second place in the season
rankings by finishing in eighth place or higher. The victory was a long time coming for Vettel who had not won since the Hungarian Grand Prix in July. Vettel won three of the first six races this season and then faded as Hamilton surged. Brazilian Felipe Massa finished seventh in his final race in Brazil. He will bow out of Formula One at the end of the season.

Celts March On In FAI As Athletic Beat Listowel Celtic are now in open draw territory and could face any team in the country, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan
FAI Junior Cup 4th Round Newmarket Celtic B 1-4 Killarney Celtic Premier A Listowel Celtic 1-2 Killarney Athletic Killarney Celtic have safely progressed to the fifth round of the FAI Junior Cup following a fairly comfortable victory over Newmarket Celtic B in Clare on Sunday. Celtic beat Newmarket’s A team en route to last year’s semi-final so they were widely expected to have too much for the Bs, and that’s how it panned out as they eventually ran out 4-1 winners. The visitors actually went behind early on but another brace from new signing Danny Roche had Eoghan Donnellan’s side ahead at the break. Roche has really hit the ground running since joining from Tralee Dynamos in the summer and already has six goals to his name. Second half strikes from veteran Peter McCarthy and youngster Michael Devlin put the result beyond doubt and Celtic can now look forward to an open draw in round five.

It has been the perfect start to the season for the Hoops and while I’m sure they’ll be hoping for a home fixture, they’ll have nothing to fear going into the next phase of the competition. This weekend they host Castleisland in the second round of the Munster Junior Cup (Kerry section). Castleisland are a difficult team to play against but Celtic have been in such good form you’d expect them to win that one, especially at home. Meanwhile in the league, we managed to pick up three very important points away to Listowel. It looked like it was going to be another one of those days on Sunday when Aiden Quinn’s misplaced cross gave Listowel the lead midway through the second half. The lads rallied well, however, and goals from Seánie Cournane and Will Courtney turned the tie on its head. Our luck really seemed to be in when Darren Mulcahy’s deflected shot found its way into the goal… via a hole in the side-netting. To the dismay of the home players, the referee pointed to the centre circle and we were 3-1 up. We celebrated fairly sheepishly it has to be said – but when the ref went in to inspect the net, he quickly realised what had happened and the decision was overturned. We were just about to tell him, I swear…

Rally Australia RALLY AUSTRALIA this weekend is the final round on the 2017 WRC calendar. Competitors head down under with both the driver’s and manufacture’s champion all wrapped up with Sebastian Ogier securing his fifth title and privateer squad M-Sport Ford taking home the manufacturer’s spoils. The event takes place on the east coast of Australia, between Sydney and Brisbane. It is a loose surface event with high speed in dry conditions, however rain is forecast for this weekend which turns this red dust into red mud with driving conditions like that of ice. Irish rally fans will be focused on Citroen teammates, Kris Meeke/Paul Nagle and Craig Breen/Scott Martin lying eighth and ninth in the
championship respectively. Six points separate the Citroen teammates however one point separates Meeke and Nagle from seventh in the championship. Seventh spot is the only potential change to the championship standing after this weekend. Kris Meeke has greater experience having competed three times over the past four years with a podium 2015 contrasting to Breen, who is competing on the event for the first time. Winner in Spain and Mexico, Meeke can’t be too far from the top step of the podium this weekend if not the top with the Citroen C3 has shown better form in recent months. A strong result here will be a great boost going into next year given the difficult year both Meeke and Citroen have had.
Despite some late pressure, we held on for the win. Having drawn our first two league games, it was a massive result for us and hopefully we can build on this and get a good run of form going.

by the All Blacks. Ireland would have surely been favourites heading into this fixture. A year on from the epic match at Soldier Field where we beat the All Blacks expectations were high in the Irish camp. Of course the omission of Simon Zebo made all the headlines as did the return of Rob Kearney at full back but all eyes were on the Aviva and twitter almost exploded before a ball was thrown in anger. In the end the home team brushed aside a woeful challenge winning 38 points to 3 with Andrew Conway, Rhys Ruddock, Rob Herring and Ulster’s Jacob Stockdale scoring tries with Johnny Sexton sharp as a knife from the boot. It was fantastic to see the youngster coming off the bench, the likes of Carbery and Sweetnam, showing how bright the future looks. New International Bundee Aki was everywhere on the pitch and did the shirt and his province very proud. THE scoreline does not reflect the intensity of this close-fought contest played in poor conditions in Listowel on Saturday. Killarney started sharply and a Thomas Clifford offload resulted in a Donnchadh Grealy try from the opening play. The first half ebbed and flowed with powerhouse forward rumbles from Listowel contrasting with a more expansive passing offloading approach from Killarney. By halftime the visitors had forged a 19-5 lead through a breakout try from strong running fullback Gary Randles and a superbly crafted team try finished by second row Sam Casey. With assistance from the elements in the second half Killarney introduced Cian Murphy to the outhalf slot and he superbly kept the homeside on the retreat with astute tactical kicking. Killarney made sure of the win with early tries from Evan Mannix and Gary Randles. Listowel bravely replied with a seven pointer of their own before a final flurry from the visitors produced further tries
from Liam Randles and Cian Murphy. On the day Killarney’s forwards Matt McAuliffe, Brendan O Sullivan and Padraig Talbot led the pack in a huge defensive display. All 10 players used in the backline consistently tackled bravely and handled the muddy ball skilfully constantly stretching their physically imposing opponents. Cian Murphy on his return from injury reminded everyone of his talents. Donnchadh Grealy contributed 16 points and Gary Randles again announced himself as a serious talent with 2 tries. MEK United FC
U12 DIV 2: Killarney Ath B 6 - MEK 2. We were very unlucky to be 3-1 down at half time. We would have been ahead at half time if we took some of many chances we created. Brought it back to 3-2 but ran out of steam for the last 15 mins on a heavy pitch. Great effort from all. Scorers: Eoghan Bolger, Scott Carlton. U14 DIV 2: Castleisland 5 MEK 2. Great effort in atrocious conditions. On a deep muddy pitch with driving wind and rain MEK had a sublime start with Kevin Harant finishing in style a break away defence and through ball from Eddie Moroney. This was followed shortly after by a penalty as a result of the up ending of Sam Griffin in the box, which Eddie converted into a score. 2 nil to MEK. Castleisland hit back with two goals before half time. In spite of a gallant effort in the defense, Castleisland’s size and strength won out. In the second half, they adopted much better to the appalling pitch conditions notching up two more goals early in the half and finished MEK off with an unstoppable
top corner goal. Great credit is due to every single player on that pitch for putting limbs and life on the line by playing in (realistically) unplayable conditions on an unplayable pitch. NEXT FIXTURES: U11 friendly V Iveragh Sat 18th Nov at 1:30pm – Fossa. U13 DIV 2: MEK V Mastergeeha B, Sat 18th Nov at 12 - Fossa

On The Ball Dr Crokes Club
MUNSTER SENIOR CLUB SEMI FINAL: Played in Lewis Road on Sunday 12th of November. Dr Crokes 2-19 Kilmurray IBrickane 0-10. Right through the first half one would not have expected to win by such a big margin. We had the benefit of the breeze in the first half but our opponents equalized our two points of the first ten minutes of the half with two of their own. We had three points and a goal in the fifteenth minute by Johnny Buckley to leave us 1-5 to 0-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Our goal came at a time when we had squandered three good goal scoring chances. Our opponents also missed a great chance of a goal during this period. Kilmurray had the first score of the second quarter, a point but the
defining minutes of the game came in the next twelve minutes when we sent over six unanswered points to go eleven points clear. The Clare lads had the last score of the half, a point to leave us 1-11 to 0-4 ahead at the interval. The teams exchanged points on three occasions in the first ten minutes of the second half. After the teams exchanged points again, we struck for a goal at the end of the third quarter. This was the score that our opponents needed and it more or less ended the game as a contest as we now led 2-15 to 0-8. The Clare lads never gave up but were too far behind at this stage to fashion a last quarter victory. Like the curates egg we were good in parts but it will take more than this display to win the Munster Final. PROGRESSIVE 31: Progressive 31 is on every Wednesday night in Crokes Clubhouse. It will start at 8.00pm. You will need to bring money and a partner €5 per person. LOTTO: Lotto 6, 7, 14, 22. Jackpot €3000 not won Match 3 11 by €40. Next Draw Sunday 19th of November in Tatler Jack. Jackpot €3300.

Milltown Listry Ladies Football
Milltown Listry Senior Ladies played Austin Stacks in the Mary Joe Curran Cup Final in Firies Pitch on Sunday 12 Nov 2017. In the first half conditions were very windy with Milltown Listry having the advantage of the strong breeze. Austin Stacks got the first point of the game but Milltown Listry very quickly replied with a great goal from Meadhbh Rochford. Milltown Listry continued to play with great team spirit and continued to dominate even when one of their teammates Emma Tangney was sin binned and Austin Stacks were awarded a penalty. At half time the score was Milltown Listry 4 goals and 8 points to Austin Stacks 2 goals and 4 points. In the 2nd half it was Milltown Listry who got the first score and both teams played some excellent football and kept supporters entertained but Milltown Listry continued to be the stronger team and with great defending by our backs and great scores by our forwards kept Milltown Listry ahead and when another one of their teammates Lorraine Kennedy was sin binned and later Austin Stacks were awarded another penalty they continued to play with great team spirit and won the game on a scoreline of 6 goals and 11 points to 5 goals and 8 points. Well done to both teams for a great game of football but especially to Milltown Listry on their great victory This game was a great display of determination.
Killarney Legion GAA
LEGION LADIES: With all the action winding down on the field now is the time for reflection on the year just gone. It is a testament to the work being done in the recent past that we find the Ladies side of the club in a healthy position. With numbers on a par to the boys this year we fielded teams in all age groups from U12 to senior. And to demonstrate the progress being made, all bar 1 of those teams won a trophy or in some cases two. And the one team who didn’t lift silverware, the U14s, had a busy year, reaching 2 finals and the advance in their play was evident all year. The U12 girls won honours at East Kerry and County level as did the U16s.And as recent as last weekend our Senior ladies won their 4th trophy in as many years. They won the East Kerry Division 3 final by beating Currow 1-12 to 1-9. This was a particularly satisfying win as Currow had beaten them twice already this year in the County competitions. T his victory is of course doubled up with the County Junior C they won earlier this year. While it is gratifying to see success and an increased playing population none of this would be possible without proper administration. To this end, Ladies club chairman Dave Randles and his group of ladies’ mentors have been relentless in their efforts to continue to provide
our girls with the best organization and coaching possible. There is no doubt that with the same input in the next few years our Ladies Club can only go from strength to strength. O DONOGHUE CUP: The stage is now set for our O Donoghue Cup semi final vs All Ireland Club Champions Dr Crokes this Sunday November 19th at 2pm in Fitzgerald Stadium. We wish the lads the best of luck and as always, all support is welcome. LOTTO: Numbers were 9,18,22,26. No winner. Next week’s jackpot is €17,200. Draw on Sunday November 19th 9pm in Murphy’s Bar.
