PAGESIX ‘Safe Streets’ to be extended until Easter SUPPORT

The ‘Safe Streets’ programme and concurrent road closures in Killarney town centre are set to continue until at least next Easter. | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

Safe Streets was introduced by Killarney Municipal Council in July to allow ‘social distancing’ on the town’s streets as part of an effort to reopen the town following the first COVID-19 lockdown. It was further extended in September to allow for an anticipated strong footfall and an increase in visitor numbers before and after Christmas. The ‘Safe Streets’ plan includes the permanent pedestrianisation of Plunkett St and Kenmare Place and the widening of several town centre footpaths and the cost of about 50 car parking spaces. The plan divided the elected members of Killarney Municipal Council with some claiming it is a covert attempt to introduce full-time pedestrianisation to the town without a proper public consultation. Others say the plan enhances the town centre and helps promote the town as a tourist destination. This is outside of a long-running row on the previous arrangement to pedestrianise Plunkett St from 7pm to 7am every

day. At Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal Council, town manager Angela McAllen revealed that the ‘Safe Streets’ programme will be extended for another four months to include the double Bank Holiday Easter Weekend which falls on April 3 to April 5 next year. “Why four months? Easter is a very busy part of the year for Killarney,” she told the meeting. “This can be reviewed in the event that we don’t need it.” In a move different to previous ‘Safe Streets’ closures, KMD will be inviting submissions from the public. An invitation to participate in the public consultation will be published in the Killarney Advertiser in early December where members of the public will find details on how to submit their own proposals for

Hairdressers call for earlier reopening | By Michelle Crean Hairdressers who say that their industry is one of the safest in the country regarding COVID-19 regulations are to write to the Government requesting that they be allowed to reopen early - possibly as soon as November 20. As one of their busiest seasons approaches, they say they'll be under pressure to meet the demand of bookings before Christmas. Currently due to Level 5 restrictions - December 1 is the earliest they can reopen

their doors. Killarney based hairdresser Sean Taaffe, who is the current President of the Hairdressing Council of Ireland, says they're going to write to Government to make the request. He explained that they won't ever go against any Government or NPHET advice - but as COVID cases across the country continue to drop - and with their industry adhering to strict safety COVID protocols - that it could be very positive, especially for peoples' mental health. The move comes after ex-HSE chief Tony O'Brien this week called on the Govern-

the ‘Safe Streets’ programme.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION WELCOMED

The public consultation process has been welcomed by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae. She raised a motion at Wednesday’s meeting asking Kerry County Council to liaise with town centre retailers, but particularly Plunkett St traders ahead of a future extension of the ‘Safe Streets’ programme. “It was like a foreign tourist destination there during the summer, and I am not talking about the positive connotations of a tourist resort,” she told the meeting. “We need to look at it so it doesn’t favour one type of business over another.” KMD confirmed that the public would be invited to make submissions. ment to allow hairdressers reopen during Level 5, saying that they are amongst the businesses which have shown they can operate safely during the pandemic. Agreeing with him, Sean Taaffe told the Killarney Advertiser that hairdressers have learnt a lot in the aftermath of the first lockdown. "I think at the moment anything is possible," Sean said. "We would be hopeful. It would be fantastic if we could come back two weeks early, even November 20. To be fair our industry has taken it seriously. We're always going to be governed by the Government and take the advice of NPEHT. Hairdressing is one of the safest environments. The Hairdressing Council will certainly be writing to all relevant Government departments based on our proven track record. We were even recognised by the Government as being one of the safest industries in the country."

Free Christmas parking decision due next week

| By Sean Moriarty Killarney business owners and residents will have to wait at least one more week to learn what special parking arrangements may be put in place for the Christmas period. Last week Tralee Municipal Council announced that its annual free parking period for Christmas will begin in Tralee on Monday, November 30 and will continue until Monday, January 4, in Kerry County Council car parks. At Wednesday’s online Killarney Municipal District meeting manager Angela McAllen was asked by elected members if Killarney had similar plans to follow the county town. Some of the councillors were calling for free all day parking, like the county town, in the run up to Christmas, while more wanted a two-hour limit placed on free parking to prevent town centre employees from taking up spaces all day. Ms McAllen said she would “take away [the councillor's] concerns over the next few days and revert to the members”. Last year the Council offered around 1,300 free parking spaces each day between 9am and 11am, a further 1,000 free spaces were allowed between 9am and 1pm, and 500 were offered as ‘all day free parking’. These are the finer details that Ms McAllen and her team are looking into. An announcement is expected by Mayor Brendan Cronin by the end of next week.

EARLY REOPENING: Sean Taaffe, who is the current President of the Hairdressing Council of Ireland, says they're going to write to Government to make the request to allow hairdressers to reopen earlier.

Flesk Way row rumbles on | By Sean Moriarty

NEW HOME NEW HOPE: Spencer Wheeler, one of the new tenants who moved into the Peter McVerry Trust’s housing units in Killarney. Photo: Graham Seely/ Peter McVerry Trust

“We were in a constant limbo land of uncertainty” Father and daughter receive housing from Peter McVerry Trust | By Michelle Crean One father and his young daughter are now feeling safer and more secure after receiving one of 15 housing units from the Peter McVerry Trust in Killarney town. Spencer Wheeler says that he and his daughter “were in a constant limbo land of uncertainty” but now have “a safe” space to call their own. The charity, which is working in partnership with Kerry County Council, said it is working to increase housing pathways for people experiencing homelessness in the county. The national housing and homeless charity has delivered 15 social housing units in Killarney housing over 30 people. "We are delighted to be able to help meet the housing needs of people impacted by homelessness in Kerry," Pat Doyle, CEO of Peter McVerry Trust, said. "We have been working closely with the Council to understand the need that exists locally and how best we can be of support to people in the county. We are now working on developing housing pathways to ensure people can exit hostels and B&Bs and get the wraparound supports they need once housed. All our tenants will receive ongoing support from our dedicated Housing With Supports team who are available to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” On Friday, official figures released by the Department of Housing showed a decrease of 13 percent in the number of people accessing emergency accommodation in Kerry to 113 people.

“The challenge is to grow the number of homes we can provide and in particular the number of one-bedroom homes, as they are the type most needed, yet are the hardest to come by. We are looking at any possible opportunities, including long-term vacant buildings, commercial properties that can be converted to residential, or vacant sites with planning permission. We’d encourage anyone that has a property, which would be suitable for social housing in Killarney or Tralee, to contact us so that we can secure more housing options to help tackle homelessness in Kerry.”

SECURITY

Spencer added that before living in his new two-bedroom apartment he was in a homeless hostel with his daughter in Tralee for approximately a year and a half. “We were in a constant limbo land of uncertainty. It all happened really quickly, we received a letter from the Council saying we had been referred to the Peter McVerry Trust. I had never even heard of it beforehand. “Being in a hostel, it was very hard for me to go out and actually look for work, so now we have a safe area, I can actually get out there and start to get a bit more work. The fact that we have somewhere which is ours where we can close the door, and she can do whatever she wants and relax, without having to worry about other people coming into the kitchen and things like that, is really nice for her. She has her own room here as well, which she is starting to mess up!”

The future of the Flesk Walkway and Cycleway could be placed in jeopardy unless a row between local residents and Kerry County Council is resolved. The row centres on four proposed vehicle access points to Killarney Racecourse that have only recently been revealed. Construction on the €450,000 project started this week after years of planning and public consultations. In documentation seen by the Killarney Advertiser, back in 2017 the local residents were assured by Killarney Municipal District staff that the new pathway would be for use by pedestrians and cyclists only.

KEY DETAILS

It was one of the key details of an agreement between KMD and the residents of Castle Falls and Priory Paddocks to allow the project to go ahead. However, during last Friday’s KMD annual Draft Budgetary Plans the elected councillors were served a bombshell that Killarney Racecourse is to be allowed four access gates along the walkway to be used as an emergency exit for horses from the venue. In another letter, also seen by the Killarney Advertiser, and dated on Monday of this week, the residents accused Kerry County Council of “having a sweetheart deal” with the Killarney Racecourse Company. “[This] gives them the vehicular access which they always wanted, but to try and put it in such a way for emergency access for horses is an insult to our intelligence,” the residents’ letter stated. “Killarney Municipal District have totally ignored the residents of both estates. This is blatant disregard for us residents and we ask that they reverse their decision to do a deal with Killarney Racecourse behind our backs.”

EMERGENCY ACCESS ONLY

Killarney Municipal District Angela McAllen confirmed on Wednesday during an online meeting with elected councillors and local media that four gates would be used by the racecourse for emergency reasons only.

The elected membership were not so convinced and asked who would man such gates and decide what was an emergency or not. All elected members said that the Council had let down the local residents with this latest move. “I am raising concerns that this will jeopardise the whole project,” said Cllr Maura Healy-Rae. “Residents were misled and were duped.” Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan raised concerns over funding for the project. “The funding is for a cycleway,” he said, worried that any change in the plans could prevent the Council from drawing down the funding allocation. “What will these accesses be used for?” asked Cllr Niall Kelleher. “We must have clean hands when it comes to the residents.” “We all want this to go ahead,” added Cllr Marie Moloney. “We can’t walk roughshot over the residents.”

PREVIOUS PROMISE

Cllr Donal Grady referred to the previous promise 10 years ago. “The residents have been ignored,” he said, citing another enforcement order that was served on Killarney Racecourse in September 2010 regarding another entrance that he claims has not been properly dealt with by the Council’s legal department. “I am devastated by what has come to pass,” said Cllr Michael Gleeson. “There is more than adequate room within the racecourse [for alternative access]. The people feel betrayed. Where do we stand if the residents have a legal challenge. There was a legal agreement in place in 2017.” Mayor Brendan Cronin was also disappointed but warned that there are other factors at play like what would be the outcome if there was a genuine emergency on the site and the four access points were not available. “I share the disrespect shown to residents having arrived at such a situation,” he said. “We need to talk to the residents and talk to the racecourse and accommodate both sides.” For now construction will continue from the Flesk River side of the walkway, while elected councillors, KMD officials, residents and Killarney Racecourse attempt to work out a resolution.

Fossa principal says farewell to school life | By Michelle Crean Today (Friday) will be a final farewell to principal of Fossa National School after nine years inspiring both pupils and staff.

KINDNESS: Nine-year-old Maja Giniewek donated 17 inches of hair to the Rapunzel Foundation.

Selfless Maja donates hair to Rapunzel

One young girl's hair colour is simply stunning and is sure to make someone very happy as Maja Giniewek donated 17 inches to a wig making charity. | By Michelle Crean Daughter of Monika and Karol Giniewek, nine-year-old Maja decided to go for the chop recently in Mirash Hair and Beauty, Fair Hill and gave the left over hair to the Rapunzel Foundation who make wigs for sick children and adults. The Holy Cross Mercy Third Class pupil is feeling very proud, her mom Monika told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "She wanted to do it earlier in the year but then we had lockdown and her Holy

Communion was delayed until September 5. She couldn't wait to get it done and was asking when she could do it." Maja sat happily in the hairdressers just before Level 5 restrictions came into force and excitedly watched as her long hair was cut up short. Monika added that they are always teaching the kind youngster to help others. "We are always teaching her that doing something small for others can make such a difference. She is very proud of herself for doing that. She is very happy with her new hairstyle and it's easier to manage!"

Pat Clifford, who believes in being kind and compassionate to bring out the best in pupils, saw many changes during his time including €1.9m of works at the school which saw construction of new classrooms and an astro turf from Department of Education grants through the hard work of the school's Board of Management, Parents Association, and staff. Although last Sunday was his official retirement date after the mid-term break - Pat called to the school again today (Friday) where staff and pupils got a chance to wish him all the best for his new future. He told the Killarney Advertiser that he was passionate about seeing pupils reach the best of their abilities with encouragement by a kind word every now and again. "I really enjoyed my time there," Pat told the Killarney Advertiser. "I always pencilled in that I'd retire in my mid-50s. I believe that you do as well as you can for as long as you can. On Monday, the school's new principal John Burke began his first day I wish him all the best. Also, the Board of Management have been very helpful and I deeply appreciate their help over the years."

CAREER

Pat began his teaching career in 1984 after graduating from St Pat's College in Dublin, beginning first in Rush, Co Dublin until he moved to Macroom in 1998 taking up the position as deputy principal until 2002. Then it was onto Spa National

RETIREMENT: Principal of Fossa National School Pat Clifford has retired but will return to the school today (Friday) where the children and staff will give him a proper send off.

School just outside Tralee where he first took up a principal's role before moving to Annascaul National School again as principal. Then it was back home to Fossa where he worked as principal for the last nine years. And with retirement comes more time on his hands, but Pat says that he'll get involved with more work related to education. "I have a few things in the pipeline, I'll do work with different educational institutions. At the moment it's time for sharpening the saw and reflecting." And on his time as an educator he added that he hopes those he taught and their parents will remember him for his compassionate nature. "Teachers and principals have an enormous capacity to have a profound effect on children, every interaction you have with a child makes a difference. The legacy I'd like to leave is that the children thought I was kind and caring."

Clifford video launched online A four minute YouTube video featuring Kerry GAA star David Clifford was launched online on Wednesday.

The video features the Fossa man discussing becoming captain, COVID-19 and this year's championship. Created by SuperValu, who are sponsors of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, David gives viewers his insight into what playing football means to him and what he has missed most this summer without inter-county football. He

reflects on the 2019 All-Ireland Final disappointment and looks forward to this year’s Championship and discusses the importance the Kerry supporters will still play. Since David joined the Kerry senior football panel in 2018 he has become one of the most exciting players in Gaelic Football. In the short time since he started his senior inter county career he has claimed two All-Star awards along with the 'Young Footballer of the Year' award in 2018. In January 2020, David was named Kerry senior football captain at the very young

age of 21 showing how already he is a leader for the county of Kerry. On the video he is joined by the Kerry Senior Football Manger and SuperValu Store Owner Peter Keane who reflects on his first time coming across David on a GAA field, and playing with his father. Peter also discusses the impact of COVID-19 both in the running of his SuperValu store in Killorglin and on the preparations of the team for this Championship season. John’s 'Special Words' help keep essential service on the road | By Michelle Crean In a year when everything has changed and the world has become a very different place one man decided that he is going to do his bit to keep a local essential service on the road.

CAMPAIGN: Mayor Brendan Cronin has been pushing for Lyme Disease awareness signs for years.

Lyme Disease signs for Killarney

Lyme Disease awareness signs have - after years of campaigning - been placed at key locations across Killarney. | By Sean Moriarty While the erection of signs has been welcomed by elected members of Killarney Municipal District they say more needs to be done to warn locals and visitors about the dangers of potentially contracting the deadly disease. Ticks that carry disease are associated with the wild deer that roam the National Park. There is an ongoing row between Kerry County Council and the National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) which own the park, over who is responsible for placing warning signs in the park. The NPWS refuse to place such signs and in a compromise Kerry County Council agreed to place signs near entrances to the park on property owned by the Council. In recent weeks these signs have been placed at the Port Road entrance, the Fossa way car park and a children’s play-

ground within the park. “I am delighted to report that following a long campaign Kerry County Council have started erecting Lyme Disease awareness signs at public entrances to Killarney National Park,” Mayor Brendan Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. Mr Cronin has been a long-time campaigner but, while welcoming the first move, asked if more could be done. Cllr Maura Healy-Rae pointed out the number of yellow COVID-19 warning signs that have appeared in public and private locations in a short period of time as an example of what could be done. The town’s executive promised to examine further Council-owned infrastructure in an effort to place more warning signs near the entrances to the National Park.

John Vaughan from Gneeveguilla, who works as a postman, wrote and recorded a song called 'Special Words' and decided to donate the proceeds from sales to Kerry Cancer Support Group. The charity operates the Healthlink Transport Service to Cork and Limerick and has continued to transport service users safely and within guidelines to cancer related appointments all through the pandemic. John said that he wants to sincerely thank everyone for their support and that he is delighted to be able to support this cause. He said that without the support from the Healthlink Transport service many people wouldn’t get to hospitals for their treatment and that he is very happy to contribute to keeping such an essential service rolling. He also said that all contributions are gratefully accepted. Many people have been asking him if he came up with the song as a result of the pandemic, but he explained that the words have been with him for years. The song has been played on radio stations in Kerry, Cork and Limerick and has been met with a very warm reception. "About four years ago the words of the song came into my head," John told the Killarney Advertiser. "I had it written within an hour. I went to Leo Fitzgerald's recording studio in Ballydesmond. I had the melody and he put it all together. My sister in Boston put it up on Facebook a few months ago and people said it's very appropriate for the

virus. It started to be played on different radio stations and I decided I wanted to help a charity and got onto Breda." To date John has raised over €1,000 for the charity. "Because of the virus physical copies can't be held by the charity but people can contact me to get one. Hopefully it'll raise some more." John can be contacted at slanteimmune@gmail.com for information on purchasing a copy of 'Special Words' or write to him: John Vaughan, Gneeveguilla, Co Kerry. "I want to thank Leo for all his help and patience producing the song and his dad Mike for helping me share it with radio stations." Breda Dyland from Kerry Cancer Support Group said that the charity is very grateful to John and all who have purchased the song. "It is a beautiful song that is very fitting for the times that we are faced with. All funds raised will go towards the operation of our Healthlink transport service."

Cllr Gleeson believes that the television exposure the superstar jockey gets would be the perfect way to advertise Killarney as a tourist destination.

“Oisin’s high profile and Killarney roots could and most likely would greatly enhance the visitor numbers to Killarney when tourism returns,” he told Wednesday’s meeting of Killarney Municipal District. The elected members or Murphy representatives will have to seek guidance from either Horse Racing Ireland Murphy’s licencing body, or the British Horse Racing Authority where Murphy does most of his racing, as there are specific regulations regarding jersey sponsorship in the sport.

Traffic wardens to tackle New Road motorists | By Sean Moriarty Traffic wardens are to take a more ‘on the ground’ approach to illegal parking and other traffic-related issues at a notorious traffic blackspot in the town. The warning follows an online meeting yesterday (Thursday) between Killarney Gardai, Killarney Municipal District engineers and school principals in an effort to solve the ongoing illegal parking and traffic management issues on New Road at school times. The street provides access to three secondary schools, two primary schools and one special needs facility - bringing an estimated 2,800 users to the area on a

daily basis. The street is also home to the Killarney offices of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Killarney Garda Station and several private houses.

TRAFFIC PROBLEMS

Mayor of Killarney Brendan Cronin attended yesterday’s online meeting to represent all of the elected members of KMD. Traffic has been a problem in the area for years and even measures like imposing a temporary one-way system during school pick-up and drop-off times have not solved the issues. “It was reported at the meeting that on one day alone, 40 cars disrespected the one-way system,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Anyone on the road will tell

On Monday Sport Ireland announced €74,000 had been allocated to 59 Kerry-based grassroots sports clubs as part of a COVID-19 resilience fund. The money was allocated to clubs all over the county but it seems Killarney based clubs have either lost out on the chance to get the funding or did not apply in the first place. A total of €26,889.08 was handed out to GAA clubs across the county, but the only town team on the list is Dr Crokes who bagged the €1,500 maximum. In the wider Killarney area Gneeveguilla GAA received the maximum and Glenflesk came close on €1,420.08, while St Pat’s East Kerry Hurling Club bagged €600. Killarney Badminton Club was one of three clubs in the county from this discipline to secure money while Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club (€1,400) was the only cycling club in the whole county to make the cut. Only Fossa and Flesk Valley rowing clubs in the Killarney area were success-

ful. They will receive the maximum of €1,500 each despite a total €15,897.17 being handed out to rowing clubs in the county.

SOCCER

Not one of the town’s soccer clubs were included in the funding despite a total of €3,050 being distributed to such clubs across the county. Killarney has a huge basketball tradition but St Joseph’s Basketball Club in Listowel was the only club in the county to qualify for funding. Killarney-based rugby, athletics, camogie, gymnastic and ladies football clubs were not included but other clubs from these sports across the county were. The Ring of Kerry Golf Club was the only golfing club on the list while Tralee Pitch and Putt is set to benefit to the tune of €1,500. None of the golf or pitch and putt clubs in the Killarney area were on the receiving end of the funding. Likewise, in motorsport, Killarney and District Motor Club were not included but Tralee-based Kerry Motor Club received €1,500 to be put towards COVID-19 expenses. These funds were handed out on a local level and are separate to the multi-million Euro governing body funding that was also announced on Monday.

TRAFFIC CHAOS: Traffic wardens are to target motorists on New Road, many who are parking illegally during school time.

you it just takes one car to mess the place up.” The situation has worsened in recent weeks; reduced capacity on school buses due to COVID-19 restrictions means there are now more school buses using the street and a marked increase in parents dropping children off as they cannot get spaces on school transport. Problems include cars parking on footpaths forcing pedestrians out on to the street and cars parking in the designated bus drop-off zone, forcing buses to double park. Traffic wardens will target these two offences with immediate effect.

OUTCOME

“One outcome of the meeting is that the executive will change the daily rota of the parking wardens so they can monitor this

area,” added Mr Cronin. “Some people have a total disregard and they have to be dealt with.” Killarney Municipal District engineer John Ahern also attended the online meeting. He will undertake a detailed assessment of the area and will report back to each of the schools. He will examine several aspects, including school opening and closing times and the better use of nearby car parks like the under-used facility on Rock Road. “This is by no means a simple task, there are so many stakeholders,” added Mr Cronin. “It was a very constructive meeting, we have defined targets and we will get this done.” Although representatives of Bus Éireann have attended meetings in the past they did not attend yesterday's meeting.

Calls to honour the McShain family who gifted Killarney House | By Sean Moriarty The family that gifted Killarney House to the people of Ireland could be remembered by having a Killarney street named after them.

New food market with a difference launched

American millionaire John McShain owned the stately home from 1906 until his death in 1998. On his passing he left the house to the Irish State and the house and gardens are now one of the town’s top tourist attractions. Cllr Michael Gleeson, at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, called for the eastern portion of the present Mission Road, from Beech Road as far as the Golden Gates, to be renamed in honour of the McShain family “to acknowledge the huge debt of gratitude due to the McShain family

for the wonderfully generous transfer of Killarney House and adjacent lands to the Irish nation”. Mr Gleeson acknowledged that Mission Road was named for Killarney people who have devoted their lives to religious and missionary services and that the renaming of a portion of Mission Road would not undermine that. “John McShain’s wife Mary, was a Lady of the Grand Cross of the Holy Sepulchre and a Dame of Malta and awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross by the Vatican, the highest honour for a laywoman,” he added. His daughter, Sr Pauline McShain who died last year, was a nun with the Society of the Holy Christ Jesus Order adding to the religious history of both the family and Mission Road.

Business owners hit hard by COVID this year have done a pivot and branched into an area which is benefiting them and local food producers. | ByMichelle Crean Tom Kennedy who works in golf and sightseeing tours, Philip O'Callaghan of O'Callaghan Coaches, Tom's wife Catriona and Tom's business partner Alice Thompson, have set up a local branch of Neighbourhood Food Market - a click and collect service which benefits both food producers and their customers. A new way to shop and eat - www. neighbourfood.ie is all about serving the customer directly, supporting local food producers and zero waste. With producers experiencing a reduction in sales due to the closure of food markets and businesses such as hotels and B&Bs in towns and villages across the country, the new group is helping them to serve their customers by delivering exactly what they order online at one location and on a specific date. Products come direct from local farms,

local food producers, local market traders and specialist suppliers and include vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs, seaweed products, dairy products, preserves, breads and more. In Killarney pick up is each Thursday from 4-6pm from The Yard at O'Callaghan Coaches. Customers can go online www.neighbourfood.ie click the Killarney market and order from each producer directly before midnight Tuesday, Tom Kennedy explained. "That gives the producers the time on Wednesday to prepare their products and drop them off on Thursday between 12 and 2pm. Customers then come and collect them in the afternoon. And there's zero waste for the producers as they are making exactly what was ordered. You can't drop in and buy, it's all ordered online beforehand. It's been great for community spirit as well."

50 YEARS ON: It’s been half a century since three teens got into difficulty when their boat was blown across a treacherous stretch of water into Innisfallen Island. This week, Johnny McGuire (left) and Rory O’Flaherty (right), returned to Ross Castle holding the newspaper article which reported their rescue. The trio, Johnny, Rory and Frank McMullin, were rescued in November 1970 after they got into difficulty out on the lake when their boat engine failed. A large scale search was mounted and after a long cold wet night on the deserted island they were brought to safety after being located by Rory’s brother Corry O’Flaherty, and John O’Leary. Traffic issues to be included in Madam’s Hill project Killarney Municipal District executive has given an undertaking to the Ballydribbeen Residents Association that it will include their concerns in all future road plans in the area. | By Sean Moriarty The association brought an online deputation - a new departure for Council and locals in these COVID-19 times - highlighting various road safety concerns in the area. Association chairman Liam Grimes and Martina O’Riordan addressed Wednesday’s Council meeting via online video link. The deputation was brought by Cllr Marie Moloney. They raised several issues, which included the safe access and exit from the large housing estate on the Tralee road, pedestrian crossings in the area and traffic management at the Cleeney Roundabout. They explained that nearly 1,300 people now live in the estate and that the estate's roads are also used for access to Killarney Celtic and Killarney Legion playing pitches. “Exiting our estate is an absolute lottery,” Martina told the meeting, while Liam added that “Ballydribbeen is developing

SURVEY

KMD is currently carrying out a traffic survey on the nearby Madam’s Hill junction in an effort to find a solution to the notorious traffic blackspot there. Separately the local authority is carrying out another traffic survey on the four roundabouts that link the Killarney Bypass from Ballydowney to Park Road. The Cleeney Roundabout is included in this survey. Area engineer John Ahern gave a commitment to those present at the meeting and to the online deputation that future Ballydribbeen works would be included in the Madam’s Hill project once that gets off the ground. “The area has a large population of people and connectivity has to be addressed,” he said. He added that he hopes the findings of the traffic surveys could be brought before a Council meeting early in the New Year. Happy 134th birthday to Dr Crokes This week is a cause for celebration for Dr Crokes who celebrated 134-years-old on Monday. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald | Dr Crokes Healthy Club Officer On a Sunday night all those years ago, a group of Killarney men went to O‘Mahoney’s public house in College Street. The building is still there, but has gone through different ownerships since, first to Squire Cronin’s, The Jug of Punch and in recent years to Lord Kenmares. The men had plenty to talk about, especially the many evictions which was the scourge of that time in Killarney and all over Ireland. Michael Davitt, founder of the Land League informed a meeting in Castleisland at that time that 1,600 families in Kerry had been evicted in the previous three years. The Irish Land League leaders were doing their utmost to undo these wrongs and there were eight branches of the Land League on the Kenmare estate in Killarney alone. Someone in that Sunday night pub referred to the GAA founded on November 1 1884 in Thurles. One word led to another ..... "why not get a GAA club going in Killarney" was well debated over pints and ‘taoscáns’ of poitín.

FOUNDING A GAA CLUB IN SECRET IN KILLARNEY

It was a good idea, but they thought "how do we do it with the town full of informers and extra-vigilant foreign forces?" A nod and a wink and the elbow language sufficed that they would meet two nights later, but they were not to say a word to anyone. Canon Tom Looney, a mine of knowledge on Killarney’s history, provides us with the details of the subsequent Tuesday night’s meeting. Andy Mulcahy, a native of Kilkenny and

a sterling Gael was a charge hand at the Gas Works, the property of the rail company situated beside the Iron Bridge at the end of Fair Hill cottages, just a short distance from O’Mahoney’s Pub. He provided a room for the meeting where the Outlet Centre now stands. 19 men attended and Tom Looney termed them the "19 Dangerous Dreamers". They met in candle lit secrecy. They had a dream and that dream became a reality 134 years ago this week when they founded Dr Crokes GAA, on November 2, 1886.

CHALLENGES

Dr Crokes faced many challenges in its fascinating 134 year journey, but it survived the evictions, the Land Dispute, the Spanish Flu, the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the bitter Civil War, two World Wars, the TB and Polio scourges, and now the COVID-19 pandemic, which challenges everyone of us, worldwide. Through it all Dr Crokes survived both on and off the field. Dr Crokes have won more Kerry SF championships than any other club, followed closely by Austin Stacks on 12, while East Kerry, the current champions have won eight titles. Dr Croke club players have won well in excess of one hundred All-Ireland senior football medals. We wish the best of luck to our current senior club players, Tony Brosnan, Gavin White and Mícheál Burns with Kerry as they are away to Cork in the Munster SFC tomorrow (Saturday). The three lads starred in Tralee recently when Kerry won the 2020 Allianz NFL title. A win over Cork will set us on the short enough road to Croke Park and a bid to win Kerry’s 38th All-Ireland title. The Dubs have been dominant since Kerry won their

DR CROKES LADIES AND HURLERS

As of now, all club activities are suspended by the GAA because of Level 5 restrictions, but Dr Crokes members are urged as always, to stay connected, within HSE guidelines of course. Make that phone call, WhatsApp, email, post that letter you always promised to do, and lend a hand to one of your own. Club activities will come back to normal sometime in 2021, or quite likely a new normal. We will accept the reality and adapt so that the vision of the "19 Dangerous Dreamers" 134 years ago will live on. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na Crócaigh.

Croke hurlers are thriving this year especially after winning the Kerry IHC, and the Ladies’ football teams are having their most successful year ever, winning district and county titles in different age groups. Football fans won’t get lost in Cork on Sunday – like Peter Keane once did | By Sean Moriarty The strange times we now find ourselves living in will be further highlighted on Sunday as the Kerry football team prepare to play Cork in the Munster football championship. The fact the Kerry team have to play a Munster game in the middle of November is, just about, the least strange aspect of the whole occasion. And it is an occasion. But instead of thousands of fans leaving Killarney early on

Sunday morning and making their way to Pairc Ui Chaoimh for the big game, the roads will be eerily quiet. Fans are not allowed attend the game, actually fans are not allowed go more than 5kms from their own front door unless it is for essential reasons. They can’t even gather in their local bar to watch what is a "do or die" game for the Kingdom. They can’t even gather in their neighbour's house to cheer on the green and gold. Strange times indeed. At least they won’t get lost on the way

this time, as Peter Keane once did. The Kerry County Board organised an online press conference ahead of the big game and the Killarney Advertiser was invited to tune in. The current county manager and coach described his first visit to the famous Cork stadium. “I got lost," he said. “It was above in Pairc Ui Chaoimh and I went with my father Tom and uncle Junior, and if you remember inside in the stand on the old Pairc Ui Chaoimh, you would have the letters AB, BC and CD. You could go and see a letter

STAY CONNECTED

in two of the tunnels. So C would be in one tunnel, D would be in the other tunnel, I went back out to the next tunnel, and I went missing for a while. Now that’s a long time ago,” he said. Navigational skills aside, Keane believes the GAA is handling the restrictions as best they can. "I think it's been handled very, very well by the GAA," he told the online press briefing. "I did think it was hanging by a thread at the time. Albeit it might sound like a contradiction now that we are in Level 5, and albeit the HSE and the Chief Medical Officer are at pains to say that they don't see it as a trend yet that the numbers are dropping … but if the numbers are dropping and you are still in Level 5, then you would have to imagine that things would be very safe.”

| By Sean Moriarty

Movie fans across the county were saddened to learn of the passing of Sean Connery on Saturday. The Scottish big-screen icon starred in countless Hollywood blockbusters but he was best known for his role as James Bond in the early days of the spy-thriller franchise. He was widely accepted as the best Bond. His first appearance was in ‘Dr No’ in 1962 and up to 1971 he played the British spy on five more occasions in 'From Russia with Love', 'Goldfinger', 'Thunderball', 'You Only Live Twice', and 'Diamonds Are Forever'. He made a return in 1983 for 'Never say Never Again'. The James Bond franchise has become the longest continually running series in film history, with a total of 27 films associated with the character.

KERRY LINK

But did you know the entire Bond franchise has a very direct Kerry link? James Bond was the brainchild of British

author Ian Fleming. One of the key characters in all Bond novels and movies, including all those produced since Fleming’s death in 1964 is the Secret Service agent known only as ‘M’. Fleming based the fictional character ‘M’ on a real life London police man named William Melville. Born in Sneem in 1850, Melville immigrated to London around 1872 where he joined the Metropolitan Police force and began an illustrious career with intelligence agencies protecting British interests, sometimes from Irish threats. Research by British author Andrew Cook in 2004, and with help from former Kerryman journalist Aiden Corkery, uncovered a Cahill family in Kenmare who were related to Melville. While known as Melville in London the Cahill family were

able to confirm that his real surname was Melvin and that he attended Sneem National School in 1866. Melville was the son of a baker and publican and was born at Direenaclaurig Cross near the south Kerry village. It was his subsequent police career after he joined the Military Intelligence, which is today known as M15, that provided Fleming with his inspiration for ‘M’. Fiction aside, in real life, the Irish spy played a key role in preventing the assassination of Queen Victoria in 1887, known as 'The Jubilee Plot'. It was an attempt by radical Irish nationalists on Queen Victoria during her Golden Jubilee, on June 20, 1887. They intended to blow up Westminster Abbey, Queen Victoria and half the British Cabinet. Less than 16 years earlier, in 1861, the British Monarch, on her third visit to Ireland spent about a week in Killarney. Her majesty’s visit put Killarney on the map and is the reason why the town and

its regions is now Ireland’s best known tourist resort and destination. Evidence of her visit still exists, Victoria House, on the Muckross Road and The Royal Hotel are just two local examples. But what became of our hero? Six years after 'The Jubilee Plot', he announced his retirement from the spy business, but that was a ruse for further undercover work. He joined, undercover, the British intelligence agencies that later became MI5 and MI6. At this point he assumed the alias William Morgan and began to be known by simply as ‘M’ and one of the true-life inspirations for Fleming’s spy master. According to a biography by Cook, he went on to become the head of the British Secret Service, but this is disputed by some historians. Melville died in 1918 from kidney failure, officially, but some reports say his death was mysterious to say the least!

with the piece. “We all have deep emotional connections to music,” Gavan Ring said. “And allowing these emotions to be expressed has a great therapeutic effect.” Blackwater Valley Opera Festival partnered with the renowned classical music ensemble Mobile Music Machine to deliver these one-hour concert recitals at an appropriate social distance in the grounds of care homes. Residents and staff gather in outdoor areas or listen to

Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve autumn event series The 'Our Planet, Your Biosphere’ autumn events evening of talks will discuss the Importance of Biodiversity, Community Action and the Role of the Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, supported by Creative Ireland Kerry, have created a series of online events to promote citizen well-being through engagement with both natural and cultural heritage and to raise awareness of the land play in protecting nature and biodiversity.

Throughout November the public can join experts detailing the ecology of our beautiful upland areas and discover the species and habitats found in Killarney National Park that have helped to get this area designated as a UNESCO Biosphere reserve. If you’re looking for something to entertain the small ones at the weekend, join the woodland workshop and learn how to begin creating your own native woodland in your garden, the perfect lockdown activity! It’s not just online talks on offer. Seanchaí Sean O Laoghaire has devised a story-

telling challenge for all the family. ‘StoryScapes’ will see the creation of an outside art installation like a theatre set, this will then be filmed and shared via social media. Everyone is encouraged to watch the videos and relate back their interpretation of the installation, their idea of what happened, who is concerned and what could eventually take place. All the feedback will be collated into one or two stories and will be performed online, for all to enjoy. “It was really exciting to be able to create a new concept that can work to connect people with the outdoors, the living sto-

the performance through open windows and doors. The musicians visited 10 residential care home and hospital settings over five days. Other nursing homes which experienced the concerts included Kenmare Nursing Home and St Joseph’s Care Home in Kenmare; Oaklands Nursing Home, Aras Mhuire Care Home, Listowel Community Hospital in Listowel; Ocean View Nursing Home, Aperee Living, and Our Lady of Fatima Nursing Home in Tralee.

rybook of nature and the opportunities that can be presented working within the current restrictions and utilizing modern technology," Sean said. "This project allows people to connect across distances creating collaborations that can lift us from our 5km restrictions and remind us all of how interconnected we all are as communities and with nature.” Alongside these online events, primary schools in Kerry are also invited to take part in a calendar art competition titled ‘My Biosphere Reserve’, and winning creations will be used to create a calendar showcasing students' impressions of the Kerry UNESCO Biosphere Reserve throughout the seasons. GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Preparing for the winter months Cold is setting in and the time we spend outside is decreasing – if indeed there are going to be any dry moments to go out! Essential jobs take priority and one of those, if you have not already done it, is to take in tubers. In Kerry it is usually not frost which will kill off tubers, rather it is the wet. Tuberous plants such as dahlias and begonias are very susceptible to waterlogging as well as frost. When the foliage has died down, as, by now it has, take up the tubers, rinse to remove excess soil and leave to dry. Once dry, place into clean dry sand or peat moss, in a frost proof shed for the winter. Alternatively, dahlias can be earthed up outside in a bank of well draining soil, sand or peat moss - or combination, but ideally they should be under cover. As the weather gets colder it is important to think of our friends outside, birds and creatures such as hedgehogs and shrews. There are so many bird feeds and accessories to choose from these days – there is a feed for every bird, and a feeder for every budget. Robins do well on a diet of seed and protein, in the form of dried mealworms, or suet treats. Fat balls are excellent for birds to keep their fat reserves high, but never feed them fat from your own table - almost everything we eat is too salty for them. There are great feeders on the market these days made from steel, which are very durable and worth the extra cost. Feeders are squirrel proof are often also crow proof, though you can create a crow proof cage around your feeders using two wire hanging baskets wired together. Remember water is also essential for birds and other animals. Having a water feature in the garden will

be of great help to them. Now is a good time to clean any water features you may have – blanket weed was a problem this year, and its dying remains as well as leaves and other debris can clog up filters. Cut away or prune water plants which are getting too big, and ensure water pump filters are clean. It is a quick and easy, sometimes cold, job, but well worth the effort. There is nothing worse than the remorse of not doing it and finding all your expensive kit in bits the following year. Pumps can be kept running at a slow rate over the winter, this will prevent water freezing as well as keeping it aerated. Ensuring paths are moss and algae free too is very important to prevent slipping in the wet weather. There are plenty of products on the market, though I am reliably informed washing powder also does the trick! As always I advise organic products, especially in this case, as there is definitely going to be run off into the garden. For those of you growing hardy peas, salads and broad beans, it is worth considering insulating your glasshouse. Bubble wrap is ideal for this, preferably horticultural grade wrap, which is thicker and has larger, tougher bubbles. Sowing broad beans, peas and sweet peas at this time of year gives them a great head start next year, and it is one way of avoiding the dreaded broad bean aphids!

WINNER: Kerry student, Casey Etherton has brought distinction to the county having been chosen overall winner of this year's 66th Texaco Children's Art Competition.

Cahersiveen student named overall winner of Texaco art competition

| By Michelle Crean An 18-year old Kerry student from Cahersiveen, has been announced as the winner of this year’s 66th Texaco Children's Art Competition. Casey Etherton has brought distinction to the county having been chosen overall winner taking first prize in the senior 1618 years age category. The Leaving Certificate student from Coláiste na Sceilge received a prize of €1,500 for his ‘detailed and carefully executed’ composition in oils entitled ‘Kevin In The Pink’, a portrait of his neighbour Kevin who lives close to Casey’s home in Caherdaniel. Aged 17 when he undertook and submitted his entry, Casey has the distinction of winning first prize in the senior Category A age group in addition to the honour of being chosen overall winner of the competition. Final Adjudicator and Chairman of the judging panel, Professor Declan McGonagle described Casey’s work as “an exceedingly lifelike and sensitive painting in which the subject is caught in a thoughtful moment”. Through it, Casey reveals a skill that Professor McGonagle said “is found in the way he used light and brush marks to convey his subject so successfully”. Youngest of two children, Casey hails from an artistic family – his father Nicholas is in television production and his mother Amelia is a writer and editor, while two of his grandparents have had distinguished careers in areas of creativity, one as an author and another in art education. Studying under the guidance of Ms Fiona Holly, his art teacher at Coláiste na Sceilge, Casey refers to himself as one

who has ‘always been drawn to art'. Inspired by the techniques of Rembrandt, he points to portraiture as a particular interest and cites pencil and charcoal as his most frequently used mediums. His ambition is to further his interest in art through studies at third level with the aim of building a future career in animation. Casey and his fellow winners had to compete against the challenge from over 25,000 young artists from across Ireland who took part in the competition. Interrupted this year by the onset of COVID-19 which forced a delay in bringing the competition to a conclusion, Mr Twohig noted “due to restrictions, activities normally undertaken during April and May, such as the introduction of winners to the media and the formal presentation of prizes, had to be set aside on this occasion. As a result, prizes will be delivered by hand without the possibility of an awards ceremony,” he said.

New Ambassador for Down Syndrome Ireland Irish rugby star Conor Murray has been announced as a new Ambassador for Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) and he is urging his fans to get active and challenge themselves to run, jog, walk, cycle or swim a distance of 100 kms in 21 days – all while raising vital funds for the charity. DSI’s 21 day challenge is a fun virtual fundraiser where participants can complete the challenge however and wherever they wish over 21 consecutive days from when they kick off – whether they complete the distance at home, in their local park or on the streets, all while adhering to the Level 5 restrictions. “I’m delighted to support Down Syndrome Ireland – I have a great admiration for the work they do across the country," Conor Murray said. "My father has been involved with the Tour de Munster for many years which has benefited Down Syndrome Ireland’s Munster branches to bring much needed services directly to those that need it most. Right now we’re all in lockdown but we are still allowed to exercise up to 5km from our homes. The 21 day challenge encourages people to get up and get active during what is a uniquely stressful time for everyone.”

Deirdre Saul, interim CEO of Down Syndrome Ireland added that DSI are delighted to have Conor on board. "He’s a wonderful ambassador and we’re so grateful

to him. Like most charities, we’ve been very hard hit by the pandemic. Each year, we need to fundraise €3.6m – which is 86% of our income – to continue our vital work so we’re grateful for any support people can give. ” For more information about the 21 Day Challenge, or to sign up, visit the 21 Day Challenge event page or email alisonk@ downsyndrome.ie. "Biden" his time to become next president It looks like Joe Biden is on course to be the next president of the United States of America but nothing is ever certain in American politics when Donald Trump stands to be the loser. As the Killarney Advertiser closed for press late on Thursday evening, Biden held 264 of the 270 collegiate votes needed to take victory. Trump was trailing significantly on 214. Not all States have ‘called the race’

but the two that are going to matter the most – for two very different reasons – are the States of Nevada and Michigan. Biden looks certain to claim the final six votes in Nevada and if he does it will be enough to see him over the line. This column was prepared at 10am Nevada and 6pm Irish time so the overnight happenings are going to have a significant bearing on what happens next.

President Higgins launched Foras na Gaeilge’s Concise English-Irish Dictionary on Friday - and it contains 1,800 pages, over 30,000 entries, 85,000 word senses and 1.8 million words in contemporary English and Irish. “Dictionaries are critical tools for any language community," President Higgins said. And to keep up with modern day terms, the dictionary, which can be viewed on www.focloir.ie, even has some very new sayings included such as; selfie - féinín, he’s a savage player - is imreoir den scoth é, and fake news - bréagnuacht, as well as terms referencing the current health crisis such as social distancing - scaradh sóisialta, pandemic - paindéim, coronavirus - coróinvíreas, and banana bread - arán banana! Others are cyberbullying - cibearbhulaíocht and Brexit - Breatimeacht. The Concise English-Irish Dictionary is available in shops for RRP €30 and free online. The dictionary App is available free of charge for Android and Apple devices. One thing that is certain to happen is that Trump will launch a legal challenge against the State of Michigan. Biden was the declared winner of that State taking 2,787,544 votes to Trump's 2,637,173. Trump has cried foul. State laws in Michigan prevent third party tallymen attending the count centre and he believes there has been some electoral fraud as a result. The only way a State law can be overturned is, ultimately, through the Supreme Court. Trump appointed Amy Coney Barrett as a Supreme Court judge last month ensuring that the majority of judges are Republican party appointees.

€177k secured for Kerry in CLÁR funding Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has welcomed €177,856 in Clár funding which has been awarded to seven projects in Kerry.

Half of soil sampling survey now complete The Tellus Project in Geological Survey Ireland, which began back in 2011, is marking 50% completion of national soil geochemistry mapping with the release of the latest analytical data. Thousands of soil samples have been collected and analysed and the resulting data and maps are critical to understanding the chemical nature of Irish soil and supporting the environmental management and agricultural health of the land. "The data collected will help us further understand our natural soils, which are essential to a healthy, efficient and sustainable agricultural sector," Koen Verbruggen, Director Geological Survey Ireland, a division of the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, said. "Collaborative work between Geological Survey Ireland, Teagasc and the Environmental

Protection Agency will improve the scientific underpinnings of advice and guidance on soil health and crop growth.” The new data and maps, which are freely available to the public on the Geological Survey Ireland website www.gsi.ie/tellus show that the soils tell a human story as well as a geological one. Industrialisation has led to elevated levels of mercury, lead, and copper around cities. The burning of fossil fuels has resulted in high levels of the element tin in the soils around cities and towns. The maps also show the impact of farming, with evidence of improved soil fertility through the application of phosphorus and other fertilizer components. The new data can also highlight areas which are deficient in certain nutrients or elements important for crop growth or animal health.

This round of funding will support the provision of safety measures around schools and community facilities, as well as the development of community recreation areas. “I am delighted to welcome funding for projects locally under the 2020 Clár programme," Minister Foley said. “The funding has been awarded across seven different projects. These projects will see improvements to facilities at IRD Waterville CLG, Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club, Inch Tourism and Development Committee, Comharchumann Forbatha an Leith Triúigh Teo, Castlegregory Community Council, and in both Coars National School and Scoil Naomh Gobnait, Dún Chaoin. The Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, secured the funding to introduce these three major measures. They include increases in the over 70s medical card income limits, a reduction in the Drugs Payment Scheme threshold by €10 to €114 per month, and a €0.50c reduc-

tion in prescription charges for all medical card holders. “Making healthcare more affordable is a key priority for this Government," Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said. "These measures will ease the financial burden on over one million people across the country." Under the new measures, the over 70s medical card income limits have increased to €550 per week for a single person (currently €500 per week) and

ute to the stakeholders involved in these clubs, schools, and committees. They provide so much to the communities they serve. I am delighted this funding boost will continue to enhance the services and facilities they provide.”

Counselling service to extend opening times Connect Counselling, funded by the HSE, will extend its opening times for six weeks due to public focus on the Mother and Baby Homes report. Connect provides telephone based counselling and support to abuse survivors, and is extending its opening to 6pm-10pm seven days per week until Sunday, December 13. to €1,050 for a couple (currently €900 per week). This will benefit up to 56,000 people. There has also been a 50 cent reduction in prescription charges for all medical card holders, which will benefit over 1.58 million people with medical card eligibility. Eligible people under 70 will now only pay a maximum of €15 per month for prescribed medicines. Those over 70 will only pay a maximum of €10 per month for prescribed medicines.

When introduced in 2012, the Drugs Payment Scheme threshold was set at €144 per month. The reduction to €114 per month has now the potential to benefit all 1.38 million people eligible under the scheme. The winter ahead will be challenging as people continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, he added. "These new measures will help people throughout this winter and for many years to come. I would like to also take this opportunity to encourage everyone who needs medical attention to seek it immediately. Our hospitals are open and our doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are treating patients. If you have any concerns about your health, please contact your GP straight away.”

6.11.2020 HISTORY: 'Kerry: History and Society' is part of a series of books detailing the history and culture of each of Ireland’s 32 counties.

No stress November Good luck and well done to all the men growing a moustache for men's health awareness this month, it's so important to talk to each other now more than ever. It's such an important and worthy cause for all the dads, husbands, brothers, and buddies in our lives. Self-care should be top of your list. If you're not doing well, you won't be able to help others. That said, it's time to look at setting an autumn self-care ritual for yourself. These can be simple things like going for a walk to get some fresh air; try to notice nature every day rain or hail. It's so good for your mind, body and skin. Plan to eat your favourite meal this week. We all need something to look forward to. This weekend I tried a new juice, something different and keeping with the theme of Hallowe'en, but still super cleansing. I added four beetroots, one lemon and ginger to my juicer..... it was lovely deep red in colour and the kids loved the look of it! After the indulgent weekend of eating too many treats, it was a great detox for the body. The ginger helps to increase

the metabolism and empty the stomach faster. The beetroots are full of vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, vitamin C, magnesium, selenium, potassium in their purest forms and full of anti-oxidants to nourish the body and help cleanse and detox the organs. If you're looking to boost your immune system and pack more essential nutrients into the body, this is highly recommended. Beetroot is great for detoxing and can sometimes be a forgotten vegetable. It has such amazing qualities such as helping to lower blood pressure. I usually stick to green juicing, but the taste from this and the instant benefits of feeling healthy, means I will definitely be doing it more often. I do like to juice two to three times a week for a balanced diet. My skin has improved so much over the past four months. I definitely saw a change as soon as I was wearing the mask for more than eight hours a day at work. I knew I had to do something fast so the problem didn't escalate. It's not just a good skincare routine, it's a combination of everything. Thankfully now most people are getting enough sleep, so it's just time to scrub up on the other aspects like skincare and diet.

We’re wired to save energy. For thousands of years, our brains and bodies have evolved to seek the path of least friction - in other words, we take the easiest route. We’re pretty good at it. We scroll through Instagram because it’s easier than getting out of bed. We put off our lunch because it’s cold outside … and then hit the vending machine or a quick and easy option for lunch because there’s no other food nearby. Building good habits doesn’t mean overcoming bad ones or ramping up our motivation to suddenly change overnight. (Motivation is mostly garbage when it comes to success, read my previous blogs on our website www.activate.ie for more on this topic). Those kinds of changes don’t stick. Instead, we need to leverage our natural human tendencies. A commitment device is a choice you make NOW that will control your actions in the future. For example, if you make an appointment with your personal trainer, you’ll show up at the gym. If you join a team, you’ll show up for the games. And if you prepare your lunches in advance for the week, you’ll eat them. Here are three very simple commitment devices you can set up right now:

* Book a check-in appointment with your coach (your gym should have this facility, otherwise you are just buying access rather than coaching). * Commit to and reserve your entire workout schedule for the week. At Activate, we encourage our clients to reserve their workouts a week in advance to ensure they have a “Commitment Device” built in to maintain their workout schedule. * Write down what your lunches will be for the week. To make it easy, either eat the same thing every day OR plan your dinners for the week and carry the leftovers into the next day’s lunches.

HERE’S A SIMPLE WAY OF DOING THIS:

• Write up your shopping list. • Go to the shop. • Buy the food you’ll need for all of your lunches. • Set aside one hour for food prep TONIGHT. • Chop up your vegetables, proteins, nuts and seeds. Put them into separate containers. • Make enough for the full week. Note: You don’t need to get fancy; most of us eat the same thing most of the time, and that’s just fine. Save your variety for dinner. Commitment devices remove friction and the burden of choice. Do your future self a favour; set yourself up for success and make commitments in advance!

By Nicky Barry When heroes die, the world seems less, and we are all bereft, Left with just our memories, of great sporting contests. Most heroes are big and strong, and fearless on the field, But Nobby Stiles was small and slight, but never one to yield. With our Big Jack behind him, Nobby won a World Cup medal, At Wembley back in ‘66, when England beat the Germans. Their later years were blighted, by stark dementia, A cruel fate for heroes, blessed with sporting charisma. Dementia, like Covid, has no respect for reputations, And swathes its way through ageing brains, wreaking devastation. You don’t know who your loved ones are, and in time yourself, And sadly there is no way back, for it is a living death. Man U folk were shocked, to hear of the death of Nobby, And cruelly again this week, when news emerged of Bobby. Big Jack’s younger brother, was sadly diagnosed, With life-sucking dementia, in another World Cup blow. Bobby survived the Munich crash, to win the European Cup, And became the grand old man, of his beloved club. Sadly he remembers neither, such is his confused state, But we all have our memories, of one of football’s greats.

Call for footpath before someone is seriously injured A Kerry County Councillor has called on Kerry County Council to provide a footpath at Sunhill, Killorglin before a pedestrian or cyclist is "killed or seriously injured". Councillor Michael Cahill moved a motion at a recent Municipal District meeting where he said the Sunhill Road is an exceptionally busy road servicing several housing estates, B&Bs, numerous one off houses and farms, and should be at the top of the Council's agenda. "You have a very large population living in this part of Killorglin, including many elderly people and families with young children and I believe the provision of a public footpath at this location should be a top priority for Kerry County Council," the Rossbeigh based Councillor said. "Sunhill is where most future developments will be going and where services will be required." The Fianna Fáil Councillor said this is now a major "health and safety" issue and he requested Kerry County Council to include the Sunhill footpath in the next Town and Village Renewal Scheme. "This is a very important and necessary piece of infrastructure that is long

overdue and will help prevent accidents. This section of road is a death trap and the fact that the most populated part of Killorglin does not have a safe footpath for its residents beggars belief." Senior Roads Engineer Padraic Teahan gave the following response to Councillor Cahill's motion. 'It is accepted that the provision of a new footpath link on this local road is a priority to link residential areas with the national school and the town's traditional core. The Council is, therefore, considering the submission of this project for €100,000 of grant assistance under the 2020 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Land acquisition by agreement would be required to advance the footpath link, if funding was secured. The Council had previously submitted this project to the Department of Rural and Community Development as a Clár scheme in 2019. However, no funding was allocated by the Department on that occasion'. Councillor Cahill welcomed Mr Teahan's response and called on the Council to make every effort to secure the €100,000 grant and requested the area engineer to commence negotiations with the local landowners.

This powertrain will be available with a choice of either six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The local Toyota dealership is Bowler’s Garage in Ballycasheen. Fassbender reveals Hollywood motor racing plans Michael Fassbender has revealed that he is planning to bring motorsport to Hollywood. The Fossa man has a long-term ambition to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans and has been preparing for the June classic by racing in this year’s European Le Mans Series, a direct feeder championship to the French race. His progress has been documented on a YouTube series and episode three from season two can be downloaded from www.porsche.com/RoadtoLeMans from today (Friday). He is so concentrated on his new found racing career that he has parked his acting career for the time being. “I have just stopped acting. It is very tricky for me to do the racing and the acting at the same time because of insurance reasons,” he said. “If I can top and tail the season with [acting] jobs that is good - but it has to work around the racing season.”

Hollywood has, in the past, done justice to motor racing and some of the best big screen adaptions of famous races feature the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The best-known example is Steve McQueen’s 1971 film ‘Le Mans’ depicting a fictional 24 Hours of Le Mans race and featuring actual footage captured during the 1970 race held the previous June. Last year’s ‘Ford V Ferrari’, based on true events surrounding the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans was well received by motor racing and movie fans. Fassbender wants to do something similar and dropped hints at last weekend’s European Le Mans race in Portugal. “It has been a life-long ambition for me to bring this sport to the screen and be part of that. It is something that I have been working on for many years so I am developing something at the moment,” he said in a pre-race interview. “I am very excited about that. As I say, it is something that I wanted to do for over 10 years now, so yeah that is happening.”

TV series highlights Access routes to college The journey into higher education is not always easy. This is particularly the case for applicants who have to deal with disabilities, socio-economic disadvantage and other cultural stereotypes which can act as a barrier to progression onto higher education.

The Irish Universities Association has partnered with RTÉ to create 'My Uni Life', a five-part series which follows the lives of seven students at various stages of their university journey. Whether it’s overcoming the challenges of having a disability, the stereotypes associated with socially disadvantaged backgrounds or having the courage to go to university at a later stage in life, these students represent just seven out of more than 5,000 students each year whose desire to succeed at third level education is facilitated and supported by the Access and Disability programmes run by Irish Universities.

institutes (HEIs) work with students who are eligible for Access schemes before entry by supporting them with the application process and orientation into college life. Access schemes seek to level the playing field in higher education and once students have started their courses, a wide variety of supports are provided to enable full participation and success in third level. Students who meet the eligibility criteria for HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and the DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) schemes can apply for them as part of their CAO application.

Mature students and students applying on the basis of Further Education and Training (FET) results have different admission routes and you will find more information on these routes from the college and university websites. TUNE IN

‘My Uni Life’, which begins on RTÉ today (Friday) at 7.30pm, tells the life stories of a diverse range of students and looks at the positives, negatives, challenges and frustrations on the ground, reflecting the reality of life for those from under-represented groups. Each student comes from a different

A quintessential farming lady It was with sadness news of the death of Hannah Kelly (née O'Connor), Gortroe, Fossa and formerly of Kilcummin, Killarney on Thursday, October 29. Hannah, died peacefully in the loving care of her family. Hanna was a highly educated woman. Like Tomás Ó Criomthainn that wrote “An t Óiléanach” she both learned and lectured in “Ollscoil an Tinteáin” - the university of the fireside. Growing up in Inchicurragane, Anabláth, she along with her three brothers and sister heard first-hand accounts about the Famine, War of Independence, and the Civil War. They attended the American wake for their two aunties, Scartaglen natives Nell and Breda Kearney. Around 1940, aged 15 and 16, they emigrated to Chicago. It was a cause of great joy when her aunty Nell Gallagher (nee Kearney) returned in 1965 for a holiday. She and her husband Pádraig Kelly, Chapel Cross were a formidable and industrious couple, farming together for over 60 years.

As the market dictated they adapted the type of farming between horses, a hatchery, tillage, beef, sheep and dairying. During the compulsory tillage from 1939-45 they sat 10 acres of potatoes, as was required by law. It was all done by horses. Their high quality produce, Golden Wonder potatoes in particular, drew many a customer into shops in town. Hannah recalled the economic war (1932-38) as an awful time due to the skinning of the calves which were worthless so the Government paid for the hide only. April 1972 was difficult too as during the ESB strike power was reduced to around three hours a day.

TALENTED

Hannah had many talents. She was kind, caring, humble, humorous and extremely intuitive. She could diagnose a sick animal as good as any vet. Indeed on more than one occasion contradicting the professional and proved right in the fullness of time. She could spot instantly the pain or potential of any animal, bird or human. Kingdom County Fair, Killarney Races,

the ploughing match as well as Moorepark and Grange open days were attended as religiously as Knock. In Killarney Show, alas no longer running, her geese and turkeys won many prizes. She was an innovator. In 1966 a Ruakura milking machine in a new milking parlour was installed, one of the first in the county. Of all the changes in farming, the farm animal she missed most was the pig, especially for eating the left over food. In 1976 Hanna and family moved to farm in Gortroe, Fossa. She always had the kettle ready to feed any one that came to the yard either a worker, relative, friend or traveller. She baked most days. Her treacle bread was unique, even though she said “there was nothing at all to it”.

background, access university through a variety of routes, but with the determination that is key to the personal difficulties they have to overcome. Tune in to become informed and inspired. She was blessed with incredible health and strength, fostered and maintained by farm work and the occasional Polka set which she and Padraig loved. Her holidays were a trip to Dublin to visit relations. In later years, while their health allowed, they went on various trips to Rome and Lourdes. By the fireside too she could multi task; simultaneously watching TV, conversing and knitting without ever dropping a stitch. Hannah’s masterpiece was the Aran sweater with the Diamond stitch. August was her busiest time, as she worked on her Singer sewing machine, preparing her seven children’s clothes for back to school. She and Pádraig got great pleasure talking about the “old days”, not quite as much pleasure as the grandchildren and great-grandchildren did, though. Invariably a younger child would ask “and is it true and did ye live through the Famine in 1847?" to which Nan with a roguish glint would say “I didn’t but Granda did”. Hannah was predeceased by Pádraig and her son Br. Pádraig. She is survived by her children Brian, Mary, Fr. Larry, Seán, Fr. Seamus MSC, and Dermot. She is also sadly missed by her brother Pat, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, and extended family. Hannah was a spiritual person who farmed sustainably. May the sod of old Kilcummin graveyard rest softly on her gentle soul. “Do dhá láimh a Chríost anall thairsti”.

It doesn’t take today To bring you to my mind, Your thought of every minute By broken hearts left behind. I knew with you beside me I could sail stormy weather, I thought you could stay And raise our family together. They said as time goes by It will be alright, I know that’s not true For I miss you morning noon and night. It’s like a scab growing on a cut, Just one pick and I’m back to all the hurt. A memory time a song is all it will take, To open the wound And my heart to break. I know life’s for living And that’s what you would want for me, To bring back sunshine And take this misery. Your presence could light up a room Like a shining star, Please ask God to help Make this scab a scar. EFFICACIOUS NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS I.O my Jesus, you have said, “Truly I say to you, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,” Behold I knock, I seek and I ask for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. II.O my Jesus, You said, “Truly I say to you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. III.—O my Jesus, You said, “Truly I say to you, Heaven and Earth shall pass away but My words shall not pass away.” Behold, I, encouraged by your infallible words, now ask for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom one thing alone is impossible, namely, not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of Thee through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your and our tender Mother. Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us. P.S.—This novena prayer was recited every day by St. Padre Pio for all those who recommended themselves to his prayers. GM

In loving memory of a dear brother and uncle Anthony O’Sullivan Ballinamanagh, Kilcummin Who passed away on 5th November 2017 R.I.P.

In loving memory of Tom O’Sullivan Late of Kilbrean, Killarney Who passed away on November 6th, 2017

Death is nothing at all, It does not count, I have only slipped away, Into the next room, Nothing has happened.

2020, you haven’t missed much, The marches, the COVID, Donald Trump and toilet duck!

Everything remains exactly as it was, I am I, and you are you, And the old life that we lived so fondly, together is untouched, unchanged, Whatever we were to each other, That we are still. Call me by the old familiar name, Speak of me in the easy way, Which you, always used, Put no difference into your tone, Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little, jokes that we enjoyed together, Play, smile, think of me, pray for me, Let my name be ever the household word, that it always was, Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant, It is the same as it ever was, There is absolute and unbroken continuity, What is this death but a negligible accident?

But although it’s a year with little to cheer, It’s another one gone when we wish you, were here. For while the World is feeling so glum, You’re the best in the business, at poking, some fun. I will cherish those memories, For the rest of my life, And will never forget having to, Say goodbye. But I know in my heart this isn’t the end, And look forward to the day when we, meet again. Slán go fóill!

‘You’re not missing much in 2020. I’m sure you’re having a better time up there cracking jokes to Joan with Sheila telling you to watch your tongue. Remembering you always, Stephen’

So may you know forever, That to us you were the best, And may you find a gentle peace, In your sweet eternal rest. Dearly loved and sadly missed, Your loving wife, Eileen, your daughters and sons and daughter in-laws and son in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren. xx Anniversary Mass is on Sunday 8th November at 10.30 am in St. Mary’s Cathedral via webcam

3RD ANNIVERSARY O’SULLIVAN

Why should I be out of mind because I am, out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, Somewhere very near, Just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

In memory of a special brother So full of loving deeds Who always thought of others first And helped fulfill their needs

In loving memory of Anthony O’Sullivan, Who passed away in Sydney on 5th November 2017. We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new. THANKSGIVING God of my life I welcome this new day, It’s Your gift to me, a new creation, a promise of resurrection. I thank You for the grace of being alive this morning, I thank You for the sleep that has refreshed me, I thank You for the chance to make a new beginning this day Lord is full of promise and opportunity, let me waste none of it, this day is full of mystery and the unknown, help me to face it without fear or anxiety. This day is blessed with beauty and adventure make me be fully alive to it all. During this day keep me thoughtful, prayerful and kind, may I be courteous and helpful to others and not turned in, in myself, keep me from any word or deed that would hurt, destroy or belittle and may the thoughts in my mind be pleasing in Your sight. When night comes again may I look back on this day with no grievance or bitterness in my heart and may no one be unhappy because of anything I have done or failed to do. Lord, bless this day for me and for everyone, make it a day in which we grow to have the mind of Christ your son, Lord Jesus Christ, friend and brother may we know You more clearly and love You more day by day. Kerry need to bring the heat

| By Adam Moynihan

Adam Moynihan previews Kerry’s do-or-die championship opener against Cork The Munster Senior Football Championship has lost its shine over the past decade or so. With Cork in the doldrums and no viable replacement challenger forthcoming, winning the provincial title has become something of a foregone conclusion for Kerry. The tally of nine final victories out of the last 10 tells its own story. There are signs, however, that The Rebels are on the rise. And I mean actually on the rise, not just “on the rise” in the patronising way a plamásing Kerryman might put it. They have shown glimpses of what they’re capable of in the past year or so and this period of Kerry domination cannot last forever. Even the greatest of Kerry sides struggled to do eight-ina-row, a milestone this current crop of players will reach if they win on Sunday. (Kerry have managed this feat just twice before: between 1958

Despite the fact that no supporters will be in attendance, the greater than usual possibility of an upset has led to a new level of anticipation ahead of the latest instalment. The fact that it’s do or die – straight knockout – has unquestionably added a nice bit of spice as well. 2020 has been nothing if not strange. What would be stranger than Cork beating Kerry in football?

SPORT

6.11.2020 forget how average they were against their fiercest rivals last summer. Ronan McCarthy’s men really gave a good account of themselves and could quite easily have dethroned the reigning champions on the day. Cork dominated midfield and the direct running of Killian O’Hanlon and Ruairí Deane caused Kerry untold problems throughout. In fact, a quick review of the old notepad reveals that Cork had no fewer than seven goalscoring opportunities, a shockingly high number for a match of that magnitude. Paul Geaney’s red card didn’t help matters and were it not for a Man of the Match performance by Stephen O’Brien, Peter Keane’s side could have returned over the border empty-handed. In the end, they won by a kick of a ball: 1-19 to 3-10. If nothing else it was a warning shot. And I have no doubt it’s one that Keane and co. have heeded. The worrying thing from Kerry’s point of view is that even now, 17 months later, those midfield question marks linger on. David Moran came into his own at various points throughout the latter stages of the 2019 championship but he missed the league pre-lockdown due to injury. His form at club level over the summer months was perhaps not at his usual very high standards, and he was fairly quiet in the final two rounds of the league post-lockdown. Hopefully he’s saving his fuel for the big occasion because when Moran is at his commanding best, there’s no one like him. Diarmuid O’Connor has accompanied Moran i lár na páirce in recent weeks

and he is certainly a player who is improving all the time. One or two of his displays for St Brendan’s in the County Championship were spectacular and he could well have a very bright future in the green and gold. Having said that, he has yet to really take a game by the scruff of the neck at this level. This Cork match is a great opportunity for him to make his mark in that regard and if he and Moran win their battle – assuming, of course, that Jack Barry doesn’t come in and displace either of them – it will lay down a significant marker for the rest of the year. Kerry’s defence has come under massive scrutiny in recent years but you’d have to say that they have been more solid this season. In the last two games in particular, Kerry have looked extremely compact without the ball. Forwards are filtering back inside their own 65 and to a man their workrate has been outstanding. Perhaps we shouldn’t read too much into the results against Monaghan and Donegal but that appetite and endeavour from 1 to 15 has nothing to do with the opposition and everything to do with players buying into the team and the team’s system. With that added air of stability in mind, you wouldn’t really be expecting any changes in the back seven for the Munster semi-final. Shane Ryan, Jason Foley, Tadhg Morley and Tom O’Sullivan have more than likely secured their spots, while half backs Paul Murphy and Gavin White are absolute certainties. The one jersey that might possibly be up for grabs is the No. 6.

THREAT: Mark Collins scored 1-5 off the bench in Cork's recent National League Division 3 victory over Louth. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

Peter Crowley came back in and did well against Monaghan but he wasn’t quite as influential against Donegal. It will probably be a Crowley in that position regardless as Templenoe’s Gavin Crowley is the other leading candidate for the role.

FORWARDS

If there’s one thing Kerry aren’t short of it’s excellent forwards but, for various reasons, it’s difficult to say which players will be called upon for this hugely important match. Micheál Burns has made massive improvements to his game over the past year or so and he has been terrific for club and county, but for whatever reason things haven’t quite clicked for him in the last few weeks. Does Keane stick with him and hope that he finds his feet again? On the other wing, Listry’s Ronan Buckley has arrived on the scene and he has held his own. Does Keane hand him his championship debut? Stephen O’Brien, who was Kerry’s best player in 2019 as far as I’m concerned, hasn’t really replicated that form this time around. Does Keane put him back in and hope he can turn it back on? Jonathan Lyne was Kerry’s first sub against Monaghan and he is clearly a player Keane trusts. Does the manager hand him a rare start? James O’Donoghue didn’t feature in either of Kerry’s matches post-lockdown. If he’s available, does Keane throw him straight in? Paudie Clifford is another option but he didn’t get any game time against Donegal. Does Keane go left-field and unleash the elder Clifford at Cork?

55

Further up the field, Paul Geaney has been an ever-present for a number of years but he missed the last two league games. Does he get the nod? And what about Tommy Walsh, a man who has done well whenever he has been called upon, be it as a sub or as a starter? The only real certainties up front at this stage are Seán O’Shea on the 40 and David Clifford and Tony Brosnan inside. Dara Moynihan should also retain his place but whether he starts at 15 or in the half forward line remains to be seen. It will matter little. His job will be more or less the same regardless. So there are lots of questions for Keane, Griffin, Fitzgerald and Foley to answer. And with no loser’s round to fall back on, the pressure is well and truly on to find the right solutions. Like Kerry, Cork also come into this semi-final as league champions having come out on top of Division 3 with five points to spare. Their momentum may have been slightly affected by the recent walkover handed to them by Longford but they were impressive in their last outing as Mark Collins scored 1-5 and veteran Paul Kerrigan added 2-1 in a dominant 5-19 to 0-16 victory over Louth. The Leesiders are a team on the up and with the wintry conditions also likely to be a factor, Kerry will need to bring the heat to this do or die fixture. If the visitors can keep it tight defensively and continue to graft as they have been post-lockdown, they should have enough attacking prowess to get over the line and keep their season alive.

VERDICT: Kerry by three.

SPORT

Honeymoon is over for Keane So this is it, the Munster football final. Kerry v Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, and in winter weather instead of the baking sun and hard ground of July. It is only the semi-final, of course, but realistically it is the final (with all due respects to Tipperary and Limerick). Changed times indeed for the near annual battle for supremacy, with no supporters to cheer on their favourite team. Even an Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, one of the most powerful men in the country, won’t be able to get in to cheer on his son, Cork goalkeeper Micheál Óg Martin.

PETER KEANE

The current Kerry team manager almost had a dream first year in charge. Nearly there to deprive the Dubs of the fivein-a-row, which narrowly eluded Mick O’Dwyer in 1982. Mistakes were made and Dublin were gifted the Sam Maguire last year. Keane and his management team know that their honeymoon is over. Now, in their second year, they will face the ire of the Kerry supporters if they don’t deliver the Holy Grail. They have the easier road to Croker with the knock-out system this year. It can pan out like this, beat Cork and Tipperary and on to the Connacht champions, Mayo or Galway, then square up to the Dubs and an ideal opportunity to win the All-Ireland. Understandably, Keane won’t admit that publicly at press briefings, saying that he will take each game one at a time. Keep talking but say nothing.

PLAN

I have been impressed by how the Kerry management used the league to decide on their game plan for the championship and then select the players best suited to deliver the goods with that strategy. I like much of what he is doing, but not all. His game plan is based on skilful players delivering high-scoring returns, but significantly all must also be grafters. You won’t win a game with 15 David Cliffords, great and all as we all know he is. Forwards are there to score, but when they lose possession they become defenders tracking back and swarming the opposition. However, I feel that Kerry should deliver the ball directly in to the full forward line far more often. Too much recycling the ball out field is not productive. I admire Keane’s emphasis on skill and all players grafting for each other but I would prefer that the backs are coached in their basic function of defence, primarily. Solo-

ing the length of the field linking up for a score is not the prime function of a corner back. Sometimes a score will follow, but rarely so, and invariably the downside is exposure at the back. The Kerry full back line are all skilful and athletic players, but my assessment is that all three are not good man markers. That was even evident in the recent club and county championships. Tom O’Sullivan and Jason Foley love to go up the field, sometimes resulting in scores, but it is a dangerous option. Certainly, the game has changed dramatically, especially in the mobility of modern players, but all players should know their primary roles and adjust accordingly. For wing backs, attacking is not as dangerous. Paul Murphy does it very well. He goes only when it is safe to do so and is well able to score. Gavin White is ideally suited to wing back. A good defender blessed with an explosive burst of speed that a 100-metre sprinter would be proud of, and the strength to break tackles. Crucial for Kerry this year is the return from injury of Peter Crowley at centre back, where he can mark his man and, crucially, mark space. I expect David Moran and the promising Diarmuid O’Connor to have the upper hand at midfield over Paul Walsh and Cork captain Ian Maguire. The latter, a Barr’s man, loves to gallop through the middle, so I am expecting O’Connor to chase him down. Moran hasn’t got the legs for that work now, but he still has a lot to give Kerry in what is probably his last season with the Kingdom. Peter Keane has plenty of options for the number 10, 12 and 15 geansaís. He is looking for a player in the Paul Galvin mould. Dara Moynihan, Micheál Burns, James O’Donoghue, Paul Geaney, Killian Spillane, Ronan Buckley and others are all good options. Kerry will need to mark Luke Connolly closely, if the Nemo man is available. Similarily, with Bantry Blues’ Rory Deane, Paul Murphy and Gavin White will have to be defenders first. If Seán Powter is back from injury I wonder where will the versatile Douglas play? Taking all those variables into account, I still I expect Kerry to win because they have better players than Cork. Bragging rights will be back, but will be somewhat subdued as Kerry will drive on in search of the bigger fish in Croke Park. And hopefully they will deliver the ideal Christmas present for the demanding Kerry supporters.

CONWAY STARS FOR HURLERS

BIRR Kerry got off to the perfect start in the 2020 All-Ireland Senior Championship as the outstanding scoring exploits of Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Síofra O’Shea propelled them to a resounding 16-point victory over Cavan.

In the end it was an utterly dominant win that leaves Declan Quill’s side top of Group 1 ahead of this weekend’s match against near neighbours Cork. That match will take place on Sunday in Austin Stack Park at 3pm with live coverage on TG4.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh and O’Shea were in scintillating form for The Kingdom, taking the opposition for 2-4 and 2-2 respectively, while first-half substitute Andrea Murphy also chipped in with 1-1. Danielle O’Leary, Lorraine Scanlon (02), Fiadhna Tangney (0-2), Danielle O’Leary, Hannah O’Donoghue and Eilis O’Leary (0-1 each) also contributed to Kerry’s imposing tally as Cavan had no answer to the Munster side’s dynamic forward play.

The winner of the three-team pot will advance to the All-Ireland semi-finals, which are due to take place at the end of the month. KERRY: C Butler; C Lynch, A Desmond, S Murphy; N Carmody, A O’Connell, C Murphy; L Scanlon (0-2), M O’Connell; D O'Leary (0-1), N Ní Chonchúir, A Galvin; H O'Donoghue (0-1), S O'Shea (22), L Ní Mhuircheartaigh (2-4, 1f). Subs: A Doherty for Lynch, A Murphy (1-1) for D O’Leary, E O'Leary (0-1) for O’Connell,

Elsewhere, the Kerry hurlers picked up their second win in two matches in the Joe McDonagh Cup as they accounted for the challenge of Westmeath with 11 points to spare. Shane Conway was the undoubted star of the show in Mullingar: the Lixnaw man was exceptional on the day as he finished with a personal tally of 1-12 (eight frees). Shane Nolan tapped home a late goal to put an extra

layer of gloss on the scoreline but Fintan O’Connor’s side were good value for their 2-19 to 0-14 victory. The Kingdom now find themselves top of the pile in the group phase with a tricky away tie against Antrim next up on November 14.

KERRY: M Stackpoole; J Buckley, B Murphy, E Leen; T O’Connor, J Diggins, F MacKessy; P O’Connor, S Nolan (1-0); B Barrett, D Collins, M O’Leary (0-1); S Conway (1-12, 8f), M Boyle, C Harty (02). 20x20: Some young Killarney RFC members (dressed for Halloween) with the 20x20 flag.

Rugby girls going from strength to strength It’s a case of onwards and upwards for Killarney RFC’s female players as the club have announced this week that they have signed up to the inspiring 20x20 initiative aimed at promoting and keeping girls and women in sport. Coaches and players recently came together at their Aghadoe base to celebrate the announcement and also to unveil the new kit that will be worn by the girls during the forthcoming season. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Minis (U6-U10) co-ordinator Liam Murphy says that the progress being made by the girls’ teams has already exceeded

the club’s initial expectations. “It really has come on leaps and bounds since 2018. That’s when Killarney RFC members came together to discuss and formulate a three-year plan to develop youth girls’ rugby, with the aim of fielding an U14 girls team by 2021. “Thanks to the full backing of the club, as well as the enthusiasm of the players, parents and coaches, we now boast an U14, U16 and a fledgling U18 team. “We are delighted to have support from Munster Rugby who regularly send coaches to us for training sessions.” Numbers have grown exponentially over the course of the past two years

and there are now over 60 girls aged five and up attending weekly sessions at the club’s wonderful facility at Aghadoe. “It is truly amazing to see the progress being made in girls’ rugby right across the club,” Liam says. “This is especially fantastic given the fact that very few, if any, of the girls who are now playing rugby had any rugby experience to start with.” The club’s commitment to promoting the girls’ side of things has been reaffirmed by signing up to the 20x20 charter and Liam says that Killarney RFC were “delighted” to do so. “For us as a club, the 20x20 initiative is

so important in encouraging girls to play sport and in particular rugby. With our girls’ section flourishing it is also vital for the girls to receive the recognition they deserve. “These girls can be the role models for younger players coming through.” The work being done behind the scenes across all underage male and female teams was acknowledged by Munster Rugby this past week when Killarney RFC won the prestigious Youth Section of the Year award. If you have a daughter, a sister or a friend who may be interested in playing rugby, the club invites you pop along to training or reach out to any of the club’s co-ordinators. Training takes place every Wednesday evening at 6.30pm for the U14, U16 and U18 teams and on Saturdays from 10am for Minis (U6 to U10). For further information contact Fiona Landers (U14) on 087 2304689, Anne Gabbett (U16-U18) on 086 3125722 or Liam Murphy (Minis) on 087 4145662.

BRIGHT FUTURE: Killarney RFC girls posing for a photograph in their new jerseys, which are sponsored by What Women Want. The club has pledged to continue to support their female players by signing up to the 20x20 charter.

Killarney RFC named top youth club of the year

Y pres cancelled for Nagle

Paul Nagle’s hopes of contesting a third World Rally Championship event this year were dashed when the Belgium Government announced extended COVID-19 restrictions in the country. Nagle and his driver Craig Breen were due to take part in Ypres Rally Belgium on November 19 to 22. It was set to be their third outing with the Hyundai World Rally team this season after runs in Sweden and Estonia. The pair won the event last year at the wheel of a privately entered Volkswagen Polo. Belgium entered its second full lockdown last Friday, putting an end to all motorsport activities until early December. Meanwhile, Nagle’s rally career will feature in a new book on Irish rallying which will be published in time for Christmas. Journalist Adam Hall has produced his second ‘Rally Insight’ yearbook and one chapter will be dedicated to the Aghadoe man. “Paul talked us through his career, from his first win on the Killarney Historic Rally right up to the present day,” Hall told the Killarney Advertiser. “He talked about the highs and lows of his time with Kris Meeke, his favourite World Rally win, and how the pair parted company. Finally, he shared how his time with Craig Breen, especially their time in Ireland last year, has reignited his love for rallying.” The book, which is not available in the shops, can be ordered direct from Hall. “It will be printed at the end of November and delivered before Christmas. To order just email rallyinsight@gmail.com and I will arrange the rest,” he added. Orders must be lodged by November 23 for Christmas delivery. |

M ick Smith the co-driver

Killarney native Mick Smith returned

to co-driving duties for the first time in years on Saturday’s Cotswold Stages in England. Smith, who is originally from High Street, is the long-serving chairman of the London Irish Motor Club. He contested Saturday’s rally, one of the few to go ahead in Britain this year, alongside David Dockree in a Talbot Sunbeam. Smith and Dockree fielded a two-car team on last year’s Killarney Historic Rally. Last month, Smith made his only appearance of the year when he drove his Chrysler Avenger on the CAR-nival Stages in Oxfordshire. On that occasion Dockree acted as co-driver and Smith returned to favour on Saturday’s rally which took place at Down Ampney, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. Smith said he could not remember the last time he co-drove on a rally – it is that long ago! |

F assbender ends European Le Mans season in style

Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender finished fourth in his final race of the European Le Mans Series in Portugal over the weekend. The Fossa man was driving a Porsche 911 RSR for Team Proton Competition with co-drivers Richard Lietz and Felipe Laser. They finished seventh in the drivers’ championship but their teammates Christian Ried, Michele Beretta and Alessio Picariello won the event and the GTE category within the championship. “My first season in the European Le Mans Series was very intense,” Fassbender said. “For me it was a big step from the Porsche Sports Cup into this strong and correspondingly hard-fought championship. However, I have learned a lot and overall, I am very happy with how this first season went for me.”

“Killarney work extremely hard at minis and youth levels to maintain and grow their playing numbers each season,” a spokesperson for Munster Rugby said. “With all coaches fully accredited, they were among the first clubs in the province to be COVID-19 compliant for a safe return to rugby. “The Kerry club have successfully formed an U14 girls’ squad for the current season and in supporting the ongoing work and growth of youth and mini rugby, Killarney are often represented at regional and provincial committee level.” The prestigious award comes just two years after the club’s work at minis (U6U10) level was recognised by Munster Rugby, who presented them with the Minis Club of the Year award in 2018. “We are delighted to be awarded the Munster Youth Club of the Year,” Chairman Ger Moynihan said. “It’s a tremendous award and it highlights the incredible work being done by the club over the last number of years. We have a dedicated, hardworking team of coaches, players and club members who are all volunteers. This is a reward which has resulted from the successful pathways put in place by the club.”

Girls Youths Co-ordinator Fiona Landers said that the club should take great pride in this latest achievement. “There are a lot of adjectives to describe what it means to the girls to win this award. Delighted, thrilled, ecstatic and elated are just some of them. However, more than anything they would be proud. Proud that each and every one of them contributed to the winning of this award.” Boys Youths Co-ordinator John O’Connell added that the award is recognition for “the selfless work being carried out by our members”. “Catering from players from U8 to senior, the club has experienced significant growth over the past number of years,” he said. “The youth section has grown significantly and in the 2019/20 season fielded two U14 boys teams in the West Munster Competitions, and an U16 and an U18 side in the BOI Munster and West Munster Competitions. “The youth player pool has at this stage over 100 players from U14 to U18.5. Additionally at this stage we are also delighted that our female teams are growing with teams at U14 and U16 as well as the starting of an U18 side. “I would like to thank all the players and parents for their ongoing support, the coaches, without whom we would not be able to facilitate the huge numbers at training, and the committee for their ongoing support in providing really excellent pitches.”
