CINEMA TRAFFIC: Construction of the new cinema on Park Road was a strong talking point at Wednesday's Council meeting. Photo: Francis Foley

Man dies in Kilcummin accident An elderly man died yesterday (Thursday) following a two car collision at Finnegans Cross, Kilcummin.

New cinema causing traffic concern Elected members of Killarney Municipal District have warned that the new cinema currently under construction at Park Road will cause further traffic problems for the town. | By Sean Moriarty Last year Kerry County Council refused planning permission for the development on the former Torc Great Southern Hotel site but the decision was overturned by An Bord Pleanála. Construction commenced last year and over the last few months the new building is taking shape – much to the annoyance of many locals who feel the

high rise building is blocking views of the mountains and National Park. Kerry County Council had refused planning on the grounds that it would affect both the night-time economy of the town and the tourism product. It also said it would give rise to unsustainable single-car trips. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan was one of several elected members that voiced his concern at Wednesday’s Killarney

Municipal District meeting. He cited excessive traffic in the area in the run up to Christmas was a forewarning to what lies ahead once the cinema is completed later this year. “The planning was refused because of traffic flow but the big dog comes in and An Bord Pleanála overturn it,” he told the meeting. “It is going to be a big problem for us going forward.” Cllr Marie Moloney said members of the public are blaming the Council for “allowing this to happen”. Mayor Gleeson said “This is not needed. There is already a very viable cinema in town and his business will be impacted”.

Jesse Buckley is now a BAFTA nominee | By Sean Moriarty Talented local actor Jessie Buckley is in the running for a BAFTA, it was announced this week. The Killarney woman has been nominated in the Leading Actress category for the 2020 British Academy Film and Television Awards. Buckley is nominated for her breakout performance in ‘Wild Rose’, where she played a Scottish single mother who attempts to follow her dream to sing in Nashville. The Kerry star is up against Scarlett Johansson (‘Marriage Story’), Charlize Theron (‘Bombshell’), and Renée Zellweger (‘Judy’), alongside fellow Irish ac-

tress Saoirse Ronan (‘Little Women’) for this year's award. “Jessie’s nomination is fantastic and surprising news but totally deserved,” her father Tim told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). “It is the cumulation of years of hard work, dedication and the nurturing of a talent first that began with watching and participating in the musicals of the Killarney Musical Society. “To see the line-up of great actresses with proven pedigree is an honour and measure of the achievement and whatever happens after will be a bonus beyond dreaming.” This is Buckley’s first BAFTA nomination but she did win the ‘BAFTA – Scotland’ Leading Actress award last year for her

role in ‘Wild Rose’. The awards ceremony, which is seen as an important indicator for the Oscars, will be held on February 2. Buckley will learn on Tuesday if her song ‘No Place Like Home’ from ‘Wild Rose’ will make the final Oscar shortlist for ‘Best Original Song’.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after the collision which occurred at approximately 6.45am. The elderly male was taken to University Hospital Kerry (UHK) where he was pronounced dead. An elderly female was also taken to UHK where she is described as being in a critical condition, and a third individual, a female, was taken to UHK with non-life threatening injuries. The road remained closed for some time as the Garda forensic team carried out an examination of the area. Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users travelling in the area at the time of the collision who may have camera footage, to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

Man charged over suspected firearm Killarney Gardai have this week arrested and charged a man in his 20s in relation to the possession of a suspected firearm. Last month Gardaí became aware of a video on social media which showed a man firing a shot from what is believed to be a shotgun. An investigation was carried out by Gardaí in Killarney and a man in his 20s was arrested on Wednesday. He was detained at Killarney Garda Station under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, 1939 and has since been charged. The suspected firearm was also seized and will now be sent for examination. He is due to appear before the courts at a later date.

Solutions sought to save Celtic Steps The operators of Celtic Steps say they are hopeful that a solution can be found to safeguard its future after Killarney Racecourse was refused planning permission to host concerts and other events.

Roads are in deplorable condition

| By Sean Moriarty The popular Irish dance show has taken place at the Jim Culloty Suite on the racecourse grounds since 2015. Celtic Steps is staged at the venue between April and October and its performances regularly attract 400 spectators. 30 dancers and musicians’ jobs are at risk following the recent planning decision by an An Bord Pleanála. The board refused planning as some locals had complained about the high levels of noise coming from the venue with some events reportedly running until after 1am. However, David Rae, owner of Celtic Steps, who leases the premises from Killarney Racecourse, hopes to apply for permission directly to continue running

the show at the venue. As such it was the Killarney Racecourse Company that was denied planning and Rae believes that by going on his own he could be allowed overcome the issues. He will apply for a strict time slot (8.30pm to 10.15pm) and plans, at his own expense, to install additional soundproofing measures at the venue.

Killarney named second cleanest town in Ireland | By Michelle Crean Killarney proved that it is up there when it comes to cleanliness as it was this week named second cleanest town in Ireland this week – in the Irish Business Against Litter League (IBAL). Killarney came just behind Kilkenny who took the top spot, with Tralee placed sixth in the ‘Cleaner than European

10.1.2020

Norms’ category against 40 towns and cities nationally in the 17th year of the IBAL Anti-Litter League. The An Taisce report for Killarney stated: ‘Killarney stands out for its consistent cleanliness - a great tribute to the businesses and community in this busy tourist town. With so many top ranking sites, there were some which deserve a special mention – the shopping streets at New Street, Plunkett Street and College

“We have been in consultation with all concerned parties,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is all due process but we are hopeful that everyone will be satisfied with the solutions we will offer.” Rae and his team will meet with planning officials next Tuesday where he will put forward his plans to save the popular show and 30 jobs. Streets were all very good with regard to litter. Court House & Environs wasn’t just clean but was also very well presented and maintained. It was great to see the Recycle Facility at New Street Car Park so clean and tidy. High Street was moderately littered, as was the connecting road to Limerick’. Cllr Michael Gleeson, Mayor Killarney Municipal District congratulated all involved. “The continued excellent work of the Council outdoor staff ensures that the roads and laneways are always presented well. We are deeply grateful for their dedication. A very special thank you to the members of Killarney Looking Good committee and to the many volunteers who give so generously of their time to help ensure that litter is quickly removed from the roadsides, particularly on the approach roads to the town. Thanks to all people, locals and visitors who take their litter home for proper disposal. It is our fervent hope, that the great commitment will continue and that the overall standard of cleanliness will improve still further. Our objective is to soon become the overall winner. I make a special request to users of chewing gum not to deposit the used material on to the footpaths. If we all work together we can achieve great results for our town.”

Several elected members at Wednesday’s Municipal District meeting put forward motions that could change the way horse drawn carriages are operated in the town - saying they affect traffic flow and road surfaces. The debate started when Cllr Brendan Cronin called for Ross Road to be urgently resurfaced as “it is in a deplorable condition”. Cllr Donal Grady put forward a similar motion based on the condition of the lower portion of Ross Road. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan added: “The road is shambolic, it is the access road to the second most popular tourist site in the town”. This lead to a discussion on the surface on Mission Road which was resurfaced in January 2017 and already is showing signs of deterioration. “We used a high grade chip on Mission Road and it is not holding because of horses hooves,” Killarney Town Engineer John Ahern said. “We have done a lot of research. It is the same issue in New York, we are talking to people there, that is the level of research we are doing. We propose different options and try them along the road, concrete, macadam, and monitor it in 800m stretches and decide on a definitive material based on lifespan and value for money.” Mission Road remained on the agenda as Cllr Donal Grady called for a separate road for jaunting cars to be constructed parallel to Mission Road. “In order to improve the flow of traffic on Mission Road, especially at school hours,” Cllr Grady said. There were also calls for the construction of a dedicated pedestrian crossing on Mission Road near the Beech Road entrance to Killarney National Park.

School traffic remains a concern A forum to discuss traffic issues on New Road during busy school pick-up and drop off times is to be set up by Killarney Municipal District. Traffic on New Road, which has over 2000 students and pupils attending St Brendan’s College and Killarney Community School, and two primary schools, The Mon and Holy Cross, as well as St Brigid’s Presentation school, has been a concern for years.

Free Christmas tree recycling in New St car park

The Christmas trees have been taken down this week and now Kerry County Council is encouraging homeowners in the greater Killarney area to recycle them using their free mulching service. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy The free recycling service is available until Friday, January 17 at the lower New Street car park in Killarney. “The location is ideal,” John Ahern told the Killarney Advertiser. The Council is urging people to avail of the service and dispose of trees correctly and in an environmentally friendly way. “The trees are all broken up and

mulched. The mulching is then used as bedding for the ground all around Killarney town.” The environmental campaign has been running for several years throughout its many collection points in Killarney, Tralee, Listowel and more. It helps households with no facilities to dispose their Christmas trees and holly, he explained. Make sure to drop by and avail of the service as it’s free of charge and environmentally friendly.

Currently no vehicles can turn onto New Road from Rock Rd during peak school hours in the mornings and afternoons. Cllr M Healy-Rae put forward a motion at Wednesday’s Council meeting asking if the new Rock Road car park could be used as a drop of point. Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan put forward a similar motion during the November meeting. The Municipal District Manager of Killarney, Angela McAllen, said the Council had spoken to the principals of St Brendan’s and Presentation and that she also had discussions with An Garda Siochana, whose barracks are also located

on the same road. Town engineer John Ahern said he wants to engage school principals, students, gardai school bus operators and anyone else who needs to be involved in the consultation, but warned that there was not much the Council could do if motorists were already disobeying the one-way system that is in place at school times. “We need a forum to solve this problem, if it is solvable,” he told the Killarney Municipal District meeting. “Motorists who turn left at these times are breaking the law but I cannot control that. We are doing our best but we need to sit down with the people involved.” Cllr Grady asked if some sort of a path could be constructed from the Rock Road car park, towards to rear of the Garda Station that would lead out on to New Road. “It is on the record that [when plans for Rock Road car park were being formulated] the engineer would include a walkway. We all agreed on that at the time.”

Fossa GAA plan 50th celebration Exactly 50 years to the day since it was formed Fossa GAA are planning a huge celebration to make the special occasion Tomorrow evening (Saturday), up to 300 members of the community, including founding members of the club and Kerry senior football star David Clifford, will gather for a gala dinner in the Dromhall Hotel. Just recently club members researched and gathered photos with the help of many contributors to document the 50 year journey and have launched ‘Fossa: A Sense of Place 50 Years 1970 – 2020’. “There was a committee set up under the stewardship of Dermot Griffin and Pat O’Donoghue,” founder member of the club Gene Moriarty told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was two years in the making and we had a lot of contributors. There’s lots of photos and a chapter on football in 1905 when a club called Fossa FC, which was affiliated with the County Board, functioned for one year.” Then Fossa GAA was formed on January

11, 1970 as there was no football club in the locality, he explained. “We had the first meeting on that date and it’s amazing how it’s the exact date for our 50th celebration. There was 28 at the first meeting which came about from a youth club formed the year before. We’re a small enough parish and were lucky that the Listry Club joined with us at junior level which boosted numbers.” The club has grown over the years and now boasts two pitches, a majestic clubhouse with a gym upstairs. And he added that a huge accolade for the club was when David Clifford made the Kerry Senior team. “We’re lucky to have David Clifford. It’s the first time Fossa GAA have had a player on the senior team.” The club’s book is available to purchase in Eason, O’Connor’s, Foley’s Spar and from committee members for €25, he added. “Funds raised will pay for its production and any extra will go to the club.”

Sadness at death of Mike John Moynihan

Mike John Moynihan

| By Sean Moriarty There was widespread sadness in the Gneeveguilla and Killarney areas on Monday morning after popular local man Mike John Moynihan died as a result of a road traffic accident near Castleisland. Mike John’s van was in collision with a lorry at on the main Castleisland to Abbeyfeale road, shortly after 9am on Monday morning. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The father of two was a long-time employee of Tricel in Killarney and was well-known in GAA and soccer circles in the county as a member of both Gneeveguilla GAA and Quarry Park Rangers. Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson led the tribute to the father of two. Cllr Gleeson recalled East Kerry Football championship matches in the past where Mike John was a respected goalkeeper. “He stopped many a shot from me,” Mayor Gleeson, who is a former Spa and Kerry footballer, said. His employers Tricel, where Mike John worked as a van driver since 1982 issued a statement this week. “It is with the greatest sadness that we acknowledge the untimely passing of our friend and colleague Mike John Moynihan. Mike John grew up with the company and has been part of the Tricel family since 1982,” it said. Tricel will remain closed today (Friday) to allow colleagues time to pay their respects and attend the funeral service in Rathmore. He is survived by his wife Eileen, daughters Michelle and Aoife, his two grandchildren Evie and Fionn, extended family and friends.

Further delays to Lewis Road junction realignment | By Sean Moriarty The much needed realignment of the Lewis Road Killarney Bypass junction has been met with yet another setback. Several serious accidents have occurred at this junction and its realignment is one of Killarney Municipal District’s priorities. Last May, Kerry County Council revealed plans to construct a pedestrian underpass to allow people get from Lewis Road to the various playing pitches at the other side of the busy road. However, this proposal was met with objections from residents of the nearby Bridgefield housing estate who feared anti-social behaviour in the underpass and that their streets would be used as a car park for people attending games at

the pitches. Both Killarney Legion GAA Club and Killarney Celtic FC have playing fields on the Kilcummin side of the bypass road. The matter was then referred to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). Killarney Municipal District was told at its monthly meeting on Wednesday that the project is further delayed. “It is out of our hands,” Killarney town engineer John Ahern told the meeting. “TTI need to find a way to get people across the road safely.” Last November, the Killarney Advertiser revealed that the Council faced a legal challenge in relation to the purchase of lands required for the construction of a new roundabout needed for the construction of a new slip road which would take traffic away from the Kilcummin side of the dangerous junction.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The Government’s hand has been exposed

There is some dispute about who exactly said what to whom, but Dublin got this one badly wrong. Commemorate means to celebrate solemnly and publicly. History, usually written by the victors, holds the same “public” meaning. And perhaps generosity, and a desire for “inclusiveness” lay behind the move to commemorate the losers, the still despised, the RIC and the Black and Tans. But the magnanimity back fired. It exposed two Irelands and how the crowd who get up early in the morning no longer sit by the fireside and talk of the past and “remember dark deeds in Iveragh", to paraphrase Sigerson Clifford. No, Leo, Charlie and co are too busy going forward and getting on with it and striding positive. Another day for them is another dollar! It is all about the

future. Do they want to build the new Ireland on a vacuum? Charlie Flanagan and Josepha Madigan made a mess of this and their hand has been exposed. I don’t buy historian Diarmaid Ferriter’s claim that the advisory committee was only a mudguard. If it were, why didn’t the outspoken Ferriter resign or talk up before now when the thing blew up in his face. No, we have here a version of over political correctness exposed under the guise of generosity. Personally, I have a distaste for all this commemorating and this focus on killing begun with WWI and rolled on for another 10 years. I don’t know what I would have been had I lived 100 years ago, but I imagine I would have been a Home Ruler. I don’t

Garda chiefs need to make a statement It’s the talk of the town, it really is, that garda blog. The Kerry and Killarney Garda chiefs need to come out and make a statement. I know at least one publication is citing “garda sources” slamming the whole matter as “historic”, - clearly gardai would be comfortable if the whole thing were buried. This is simply not good enough. I wrote about the licensing laws in this town three and four years ago. And in a difficult story, I exposed what came to be known as “vouchergate” where every garda in Killarney was questioned during an internal inquiry in which it was alleged a garda had been offered a

voucher by a publican. While the stories may not have gone down well with the Gardai, and I was left in no doubt about that, nothing in the stories was challenged. Aside at all from whether licensing laws were black-guarded, late night drinking and public drunkenness seems to be part and parcel of the tourist product in this town. Busloads of people arrive already drunk from outside Killarney. And there is a feeling not enough is being done to address this. I hear the thing was out of control altogether on New Year’s Eve. It is almost two years since the problem was raised at a Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting by a local accountant and member of the Purple Flag effort. Dingle have stopped

In its desire to gloss over and move on too quickly and be “inclusive”, this Government has succeeded this week in opening a Pandora’s box and showing its true disregard for its own "old" people.

100 years is not that long ago and if Fine Gael and their largely Dublin based advisory council on commemorations never realised it, they know it now.

like violence and I don’t like violent change. But facts are facts and our violent beginnings as a nation need to be acknowledged. The Civil War and War of Independence set this country back decades. We are powering forward now, but the change is so much it seems to be violent in itself. And enter the great Charlie Flanagan Justice Minister again. I have covered all the citizenship ceremonies held here the racket. Why hasn’t Killarney? The liberal attitude to licensing in this town has never been fully resolved and the public disquiet about it has never been fully addressed. While there is much amusement on social media, there is also now palpable anger on the streets among the public. And that is worrying. Deeply worrying. We will have to get a statement from the local gardai on the licensing matter, and on reports of late night anti-social behaviour on our streets. A full and comprehensive statement is needed to restore public confidence, not just from the gardai - where are Revenue in all of this? I have it on very good authority the Revenue Commissioners have long known there was a hiatus in Killarney. “A problem” is how it is described by Revenue, but one which they have not tackled. The numbers of exemptions sought and the revenue have not added up and met estimates. Now the Revenue boys and girls are well able to chase down small time self-employed people, decent hard working self-employed for a couple of bob and slap on plenty of penalties. So, my question is where are Revenue with claims about hundreds of thousands of euro annually being lost in Killarney in a failure to get exemptions?

in Killarney and the same speeches are rolled out with minor variations. They are joyous occasions and there is a great leaning forwards towards the “new Irish”. And rightly so. But I am becoming profoundly uneasy with the way the “old Irish” are being overlooked and excluded. I really think there is a message being sent out by Charlie Flanagan and others at these citizenship ceremonies – the old Irish need to get on with it. Move on. Their thinking needs to change. The new Irish are encouraged to remember their pasts in their own countries and remember their own stories, is how it is put, but who is making room for the stories of the Old Irish or allowing them to be told? No-one. Instead we are all to be re-educated for this great new united vacuum of Ireland. It is very clear to me from the mess of this commemorative event that what has been exposed is a disregard for the Old Irish and their complex stories, their anger and their emotional ties to the difficult past, their very being in other words. In its desire to gloss over and move on too quickly and be “inclusive”, this Government has succeeded this week in opening a Pandora’s box and showing its true disregard for its own "old" people.

Killarney needs better facilities Now, Killarney is busy getting a second cinema. Tralee meanwhile, thanks again to the great and benevolent powers who oversee the county town, is to get a two storey purpose built gym and boxing facility - and an urban bike park is definitely on the cards. There is also the opening of the greenway to Fenit and a beautiful new walk by the sea all the way to the Spa, all thanks to official Ireland and huge grants being drawn down. Killarney has to rely on the private sector - but it seems to me even this is slipping. There was an interesting aside at the recent municipal meeting in Tralee, that tourist attractions have a 10 year shelf life. It could be walking this decade, cycling the next, bowling the next etc. Tralee already has a bowling alley. When is this town going to wake up that there is more to life than nightclubs and drinking dens and gyms?

Garda Commissioner to face whistleblower allegations today Garda Commissioner Drew Harris will appear before the County Kerry Joint Policing Committee in Tralee today (Friday) where he is expected to face questions regarding allegations made by a garda in an online blog regarding licencing laws in Killarney, as well as bullying in the force. | By Sean Moriarty In the blog, the garda, who is on longterm sick leave, claims that there were several issues in Killarney where pubs and hotels openly flouted licensing laws by serving alcohol after permitted hours and that some premises were operating without any licence. He also allegedly claims he was bullied by colleagues when he tried to raise the matter internally. Killarney Gardai refused to comment on

the allegations while the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) would not comment to the Killarney Advertiser this week “purely for confidentiality reasons”. Kerry Joint Policing Committee is made up of senior garda personnel, elected county councillors and nationally elected Kerry politicians, senior council staff, town chamber representatives and society pillars. The meeting was due to get underway at 10.30am today at County Buildings in Tralee.

Joni, who is from Glenflesk, will take on the role of Business Development, leading field sales and manage the development of the Killarney Magazine that has grown into a must read for visiting tourists. “We are delighted to have Joni Kelly onboard to look after business development,” Aidan Quirke, General Manager, said. “Joni brings a wealth of experience to the role and will be responsible for

Engineer appointed to Áras Phádraig project Kerry County Council has appointed a dedicated engineer to oversee the refurbishment of the Áras Phádraig in Killarney town centre. | By Sean Moriarty The popular local community centre has been idle since May 2009 when the Franciscan Community attempted to transfer ownership of the facility to the town council; however this ran into trouble as the authority is not a charity. At this week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, Killarney Municipal District Manager Angela McAllen confirmed that an engineer has been appointed to the project. Last January, a feasibility study and

business plan for the site in Killarney was completed following an extensive consultation and review process undertaken by the Killarney Municipal District of Kerry County Council. The new development could feature a contemporary arts and theatre space with rehearsal, exhibition and gallery facilities, meeting rooms to be made available for a range of community uses, an educational space to accommodate the provision of training and skills courses and office space to suit the particular needs of Killarney town.

developing sales locally and looking after our regular advertisers. I hope everyone will give Joni a big Killarney welcome.” The Killarney Advertiser is read by 28,000 readers in the Killarney region. 8,000 copies are distributed to 230 locations each Friday and our readers are kept up to date daily via our Facebook and Twitter profiles. “The Advertiser continues to grow readership and with our new layout implemented in 2019 and increase in local stories, we hope that advertisers and readers are enjoying the changes,” Aidan added.

John Brassil TD has this week said he’s disappointed that University Hospital Kerry (UHK) has been overlooked by the HSE in its recently published National Service Plan 2020. The budget set for 2020 is up €1 billion to €17.4 billion, however the plan includes no mention of University Hospital

Kerry, and no additional funding for the hospital. “Time and again we see that the worst hit hospitals, when it comes to the trolley crisis, are all outside of Dublin,” he said. “While all the major hospitals in the South South-West Hospital Group have received project funding under the service plan, UHK has been skipped over.”

Volunteers raise €900 for Trocáire Lives are truly changed thanks to the Killarney community who helped raise €900 for Trocáire. | By Michelle Crean Locals gave generously to the fundraiser which was organised before Christmas, by buying a ‘Gift of Love’ such as chicks, soaps and solar panels ranging from €8 to €15 which will help people in Kenya, Ethiopia, Honduras and South Sudan. Larger gifts such as ‘Get a family Farming’ for €200, ‘Terrific Trees’ for €85 and ‘Create a Buzz’ for €65, assist communities in rural areas of Central America and Africa. Their generosity now means lives in those countries have been changed, Sue McDonough, a volunteer for Trocáire, ex-

plained to the Killarney Advertiser. “It was the first time the fundraiser was held in Killarney,” Sue said. “I lived in Zambia for 20 years so I have insight into their lives.” She added that on behalf of Trocaire she would like to thank all of the generous patrons and parishioners in Killarney who have bought small the ‘Gifts of Love’. “Our sincere thanks also to Fr Liam McCarthy for permitting the project and all the team for implementing, documenting and collecting all funds in the Friary office in Killarney, which was a very busy period leading up to Christmas.”

Killarney creatives appear on new TG4 show One local hotel is hoping to be crowned ‘Ireland’s Most Creative Company’ after appearing a brand new TV show last night (Thursday). TG4 aired the first of their six-part entertaining arts-based competition series ‘Creative Company’ at 9.30pm to find 'Ireland’s Most Creative Workplace'. In it, The Gleneagle Hotel competed against Maurice Ward, based in Dublin and Shannon, for a place in the grand finale. 10 companies and organisations from across the country are encouraged to operate as a team and make the piece of art on their own premises from concept to completion. Each were paired with an accomplished Irish artist throughout the entire process, and the work was judged by expert art critics, Evelyn O’Rourke, Broadcaster RTÉ; Caomhán Mac Con Iomaire, Nation-

al Gallery of Ireland; and Helen Carroll, Business to Arts. “This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the creative talents of just some of the people working in The Gleneagle Hotel,” Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group, said. “By encouraging creativity in the workplace we are better positioned to generate new ideas and improved ways of working. The Gleneagle team created an incredible piece of bespoke art and we are very proud of them.” Five workplaces will make it to the grand final and a public vote will help decide which workplace created the most impressive piece of art and deserve to win. SCHOOLS QUIZ: Pupils Harry Bolger, Shane O'Sullivan, Aoibhinn Kelly and Donnchadh Daly from Lissivigeen National School who were joint 3rd in last year's Credit Union Schools Quiz final pictured with Gerry Thompson, President, Irish League of Credit Unions.

Get ready for battle at Credit Union Schools Quiz!

Killarney Credit Union is encouraging children and schools in the South Kerry area to get fighting fit to claim victory in the 29th annual Credit Union Schools Quiz. Each year around 25,000 schoolchildren take part in the quiz nationally and it culminates in a fiercely fought national final at the RDS, Dublin. The quiz begins with a knock-out stage at local level, organised by Killarney Credit Union to take place at INEC, Gleneagle Hotel on February 2. There will be some fantastic prizes for the winning teams-of-four, who will also progress to the regional knockout stage in early late February or early March. The winning teams from this stage will then make it through to the grand final in April. All teams will have their eye on the prize with a total of €4,000 up for grabs for the overall winning schools. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for schools in the South Kerry area to nurture a culture of partnership among students, and we would really encourage all schools to get registered for the 2020 event,” Karena McCarthy, Youth Officer, Killarney Credit Union said. “A core focus of this event for children is

to gain experience at teamwork to help equip them with the skills necessary for successful teamwork in the future. “In the past few years, we have seen schools from South Kerry progress to national level and we hope that again this year we will see this happen. In 2019, Lissivigeen National School came in joint 3rd in the U13 age category. They beat off stiff competition at the grand final in the RDS.” Registration for the 2020 Schools Quiz is now open and primary schools in the South Kerry area will be sent a registration pack in the coming week with application details. If your school has not received an application form and is interested in applying, please contact Karena on 064-66331344 or k.mccarthy@ killarneycu.ie. Students interested in brushing up on their knowledge this year can avail of a new online interactive quiz on www.creditunion.ie.

WEDDING

From a city gaol to seven course meal! Cork City Gaol Museum was the perfect location for the nuptials of a local member of An Garda Siochana, and bride Lynda Brosnan and groom Noel Enright wowed guests afterwards with a seven course meal on Saturday.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

24

Lynda, from St Anne’s Road, Killarney, a Sergeant in Dingle Garda Station, said ‘I Do’ as she tied the knot in the picturesque setting on Saturday. Up to 140 guests gathered for the ceremony which was performed by Kathryn Cashman, an interfaith minister with One World Ministers. Lynda is daughter of Philo Brosnan and Sean Brosnan, while Noel, from Ballylanders Limerick, the Executive Chef at the Lake Hotel Killarney, is son of Maura, and the late Danny Enright. Bestman was Chad Byrne, with Todd Mullins as groomsman. Maid of Honour was Linda Twomey, with Karen Moore as bridesmaid. The couple met in The Shire Killarney in December 2014 after being introduced by bestman Chad, Head Chef in The Brehon Hotel. Love blossomed and they got engaged on the strike of midnight on the January 1, 2018 at Pier 1 San Francisco watching the New Year’s firework display while on holidays. “For our wedding we hired out the gaol and had Evergreen Silk plants decorate

it while being conscious not to take from the gaol’s natural beauty,” Lynda told the Killarney Advertiser. “After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a drink and a wander around the gaol.” The couple were then joined by their close friends and family at the Maryborough House Hotel & Spa for a drinks reception followed by a seven course meal. As the groom and bestman are well known for their culinary skills, preparation of the courses was overseen by Executive Chef Gemma Murphy. Guests were surprised after dinner when the Chef burst into song as John Frawley ‘The Singing Chef’ helped get guests onto their feet. “The Pat Fitz Band ensured they kept the dancefloor full all night. Then the party continued into the night with DJ Pat Aherne.” Lynda and Noel headed away on honeymoon on Wednesday beginning in Paris, followed by Johannesburg and Cape Town for two and a half weeks.

Stay ahead of your health

Initiative is something most of us think about when it comes to our careers, but we don’t think of it as often when it comes to our health. For our jobs, doing excellent work is not simply following directions or following through with projects; it is actively searching for areas within our purview that need improvement and taking steps, on our own, to improve those areas. Even at work, an area we all focus on doing our best, going above and beyond a “job description” is not often sought out. When someone consistently goes above and beyond, they will outperform their peers in almost every area. Taking initiative isn’t an unfamiliar concept. Most people would say they try, and hope to show initiative with their careers. However, outside of their jobs, we see many that don’t take initiative with their health. They tend to be too busy with work, family, hobbies etc., and have many reasons why their health is second place. The problem with this is a fact no-one likes to admit; our health enables us to work, it enables us to spend time with our family, and it gives us the capacity to enjoy our hobbies. Without our health, we lose all of these things. Initiative comes into play when we get ahead of health problems by prioritising our wellness. We look for things we can improve now, not later. We choose to eat less sugar, less processed foods and more healthy, natural meats, vegetables, nuts and seeds. We choose to prioritise our workouts, regardless of our schedules, and workout three to five days a week, even if it’s simply walking! We choose to take time for ourselves, even if it’s only

10-20 minutes snuck in where we can, to read, relax, and allow our mind to unwind. Taking the initiative to take care of our health will help us stay ahead of serious issues that result from poor nutrition, lack of overall fitness, or sub-par mental health. Each of these areas, when neglected, can cause problems that we can’t postpone or avoid, as much as we would like to tell ourselves differently. As painful as it may be to confront, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, anxiety, to only name a few, are the consequences of putting our wellness second. Take initiative with these simple steps and help keep your health from forcing you to focus on it: • Find three days and times during the week you can put aside at least 20 minutes to workout. Add them to your calendar and mark them ‘busy.’ Let your family or friends know this time is off limits and that you need their help making sure you stick to your schedule. • Find a time you can read or simply have some quiet time each day - even if it’s only 10 minutes, you’ll be amazed at the change it will make. • Make a simple grocery list of meats, vegetables and healthy options. When you go to the store, only allow yourself to buy what’s on your list. Every time you do this, you’ll be one more step healthier. Don’t worry about perfecting the above, focus on a little bit each day, but don’t sit and do the minimum - look for small ways each day you can improve your health. It will pay off in a huge way for you, your family, and those you care about.

New book highlights Killarney’s faction fighting history | By Michelle Crean Killarney and its environs feature heavily in new book ‘Days of the Blackthorn: Faction Fighters of Kerry’. Author and folklore researcher Seán Moraghan, who previously worked as a tour guide at Muckross House, will launch his latest work in Killarney Library this coming Thursday, at 6.30pm. The 320 page paperback, published by Mercier Press, will be on sale for €13 on the night and will be available afterwards for €16.99 from Eason, as well as online in an ebook version including two free chapters on Google Books. “This is a chapter by chapter account of faction fighting in Kerry with stories from the Killarney area,” Sean told the Killarney Advertiser. During the nineteenth century, gangs of men fought each other at country-fairs, wielding hardened sticks of oak, ash, or blackthorn. “The book explains what faction fighting is. Every strong farmer has a strong gang behind him. Tens or even hundreds might take part. Fights were commenced after the exchange of insults; after prompting by a man who might drag his coat along the ground, demanding, “Who will tread on the tails of my coat?”; or by the practice of “wheeling” – twirling a fighting stick overhead and shouting for the other party to come on.” He explained that in Killarney, faction fighting may have gone on since the 1600s. “During the late 1700s, the

greatest fighter was Daniel O’Donoghue, known as the O’Donoghue of the Glens, who regularly brought his faction into Killarney from Glenflesk, where he had an estate. On every fair and market day they marched through it, shouting, hallooing, and offering five pounds for the head of any man that would dare oppose them." ‘Days of the Blackthorn’ used newspaper accounts from the nineteenth century and oral history collected during the 1930s to reveal who the factions were, where they fought in each district of Kerry, and who some of their famous fighters were, he added.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Spring is on its way Spring is most definitely on its way. Snowdrops are flowering, daffs are showing themselves and plants are budding. Forsythia is really the harbinger of spring with its bright yellow flowers adding a ray of sunshine to the dullest day! This is a plant which has fallen out of favour in recent years, but one which I feel certainly has a place in any garden, albeit at the back of a border. ‘Lynwood’ is one of the most common varieties, but is rather a large shrub, growing to two metres when not pruned. F. Maree d’Or is a dwarf variety, growing only about one metre high and wide. It has large, golden blossoms, and is ideal for any mixed border. The forsythia has bright green foliage which is a great backdrop for summer flowering plants. To keep the larger varieties under control, prune them back hard immediately after flowering. Pruning at this time will ensure flowers next year.

Another favourite of mine is the Chaenomeles, also known as japonica or flowering quince. This is a low growing shrub, having lax stems it can also be trained along a wall or fence. There are many more varieties, but all flower profusely, and bear apple like fruits in the autumn. They are a fantastic plant for a north or east facing wall, as they do not mind the cold or lack of sunshine. Daphne odora is another stunning shrub for early spring, bearing small purple/ pink flowers along its stems, often before the leaves emerge. The flowers are followed in the autumn by bright red berries. Daphne burkwoodii is a slightly hardier variety, with pale purple flowers. A large unusual shrub which I recommend if you have the space, is Chimonanthus praecox. It will grow 2.5m x 3m, so it does require some space! It blooms pale yellow in winter, its scent spreading far, lending to its common name of Wintersweet.

Tips for filling up the CAO form As many students are busy preparing for their mocks at the moment, worrying about the CAO is bound to bring extra stress. However, students are urged not to worry unnecessarily. Applicants who have registered ahead of the January 20 early bird deadline at 5.15pm will have received their CAO number and they can add/change courses up February 1, also at 5.15pm. For those who have not yet registered, you can do so on www.cao.ie and the discounted application fee of €30 applies up to the early deadline of January 20. There is a fee of €45 thereafter for those who register after and before the normal closing date of February 1. Students will be asked to submit personal and contact details, school details, indicate if you wish to apply for the HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and/or DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) schemes, for exemptions from minimum entry requirements, for the maintenance grant and to input the courses you are interested in. For students who are completely undecided at this stage, don't worry. You can revisit your choices when the Change of Mind Facility opens on May 5 until July 1, at 5.15pm. In the meantime, the following steps will help: 1. Think about the type of person you are, your aptitudes, interests, qualities, strengths, subjects or tasks that you enjoy. 2. Talk to those who know you well such as parents, teachers, your guidance counsellor and to those who have studied the courses you are interested in. 3. Research the detail of the courses by checking out all the modules you will study over the duration of the course. This detail can be found on the college websites. 4. Check the entry requirements for the course, which must be met if you are to be considered eligible. 5. There are some restricted courses

Guidance counsellor Niamh Dwyer which must be included before February 1, so applicants are encouraged to consult the CAO handbook to check these courses. 6. Put your choices in genuine order of preference. This is the golden rule of filling the CAO form. Points are based on supply and demand therefore they rise and fall every year and students won't know the cut off points for 2020 until the first round offers are issued in mid-August. 7. The key tip at this stage is make sure not to miss any of the deadlines, all of which are available on www.cao.ie. Students applying for the HEAR and DARE schemes must complete these forms by March 1 and send supporting documentation by March 15. See www.accesscollege.ie for more details of both schemes and speak to your guidance counsellor. Application Information Sessions for both schemes take place nationwide tomorrow (Saturday, January 11) with Institute of Technology, Tralee hosting the event for Kerry from 10am-2pm. Information on key dates see www.cao.ie. Niamh Dwyer is a guidance counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and is PRO of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. Killarney the only place for a family celebration A couple who can’t get enough of Killarney decided it was the perfect location for the christening of their son Paidi Og.

Double celebration for the Brosnan family

Fiona and Padraig O’Leary are serving officers with An Garda Siochana in Nenagh, Co Tipperary. Fiona, from Schull in West Cork and Padraig from just across the County Bounds in Kiskeam, north Cork, met while at a work function in County Limerick. Back in 2013 they chose to hold their wedding celebration in Killarney and after the ceremony at the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa they celebrated at the Malton Hotel which has since been renamed the Great Southern Killarney. Fast forward six years, and when their fourth child Paidi Og was born in November they knew the only place for

the christening celebration was in same town where they got married. “There is always a great buzz around the place,” said Fiona. “But that buzz is even better around Christmas so we wanted to have it as soon as possible.” After a ceremony at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Kiskeam, the party moved to The International Hotel. Godparents were Fiona’s brother Enda Conneely and Padriag’s sister Eileen. It was also a proud day for grandparents Margaret Conneely and Sheila and Dan O’Leary and Paidi Og’s siblings Daniel, Sean and Evelyn.

There was double celebrations for the Brosnan family at the weekend with a joint 50th and 21st. Mag Brosnan from Gneeveguilla celebrated her 50th birthday, while her daughter Rachael marked her 21st. Rachael’s birthday actually fell on December 29, and with Mag’s birthday on January 26 they decided to hold a joint celebration to mark the occasion. “No fear of a dry January in this house,” joked Rachael. Over 40 people, mainly family and local friends, attended the party in The Killarney Avenue Hotel on Friday night. Rachael is currently studying Internation-

al Business at the University of Limerick and some of her college friends joined her on the night where they met her former classmates from Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra. The party kicked off around 9.30pm and they danced and partied until 1.30am. Rachael works part-time in Den Joe’s Family Restaurant on New Street and some of her colleagues joined her for the fun. “We made it to Den Joe’s for a feed afterwards,” added Racheal. “It had to be done!”

‘Titans’ is an American superhero tvshow based on the characters of DC Comics. Further based on the characters of the Teen Titans comic, the superhero team has become one of the most popular since its inception.

Taking a grittier, bolder and bloodier approach than most superhero shows are comfortable with, ‘Titans’ stands tall amongst the growing hoard of superhero titles on TV.

Now that things have calmed down in Lilac Cove, Juniper can enjoy her extended stay in the human world. But there's no rest for a fairy godmother - even one without her wand. Juniper has to learn to drive and her teacher is a grumpy former detective with control issues. Her best fairy friend, Iris, is in town for a visit and flirting her way into constant trouble. Fairyland Flowers is hosting its annual fairies and flowers get-together and Juniper can’t help but think aunt Mossy is hiding something from her, again. At the get-together one of the attendees ends up dead and face down in a carnation flower arrangement, with Iris as the prime suspect. As the evidence stacks up against Iris, will Juniper's determination and knack for finding the truth be enough to save her fairy friend from a life of human imprisonment?

‘Lose You to Love Me’ gave Selena her biggest UK hit, peaking at Number 3, and will also feature on ‘Rare’. Another song from the new album, ‘Look At Her Now’, was also a hit and was placed in the Top 40 in November 2019. ‘Rare’ promises more ear-grabbing textures, as well as her intimate thoughts and her recent health troubles, including a much-publicised kidney transplant.

Air Ambulance needs funds urgently The Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) Air Ambulance could be grounded within a week unless urgent funds are found. The ICRR operates from a small airfield near Millstreet in Cork and serves a 100km radius from its base including vast parts of rural Kerry. Since its launch in July, the ICRR Air Am-

bulance has flown on missions over 250 times and has helped in excess of 200 patients. “These missions have been in both challenging rural locations and in towns and cities right across the country. We estimate over 600 missions could be flown in 2020 and those 600 life-saving missions are in jeopardy without immediate funding,” ICRR Operations Manager Ruth

Patrick Boyle had publicly shared a photo on Friday of himself and a koala that he rescued from the aftermath of the bushfires in East Gippsland. “I instantly found a burned koala that I took straight back to the wildlife shelter. It was actually remarkable how quickly I found koalas. I’ve found eight or nine so far that have been rescued. I found over 10 that were dead and about another five that are alive and healthy for the time being.” The young man is encouraging the people to help the wildlife after such disastrous fires hit East Gippsland. “I feel, like most people, that the bushfire threat has come and gone,” he said. “I feel safe here now.”

Bruton said. The ICRR Air Ambulance must fundraise for the provision of the helicopters, pilots, air base facilities, insurance, firefighting and other operational needs to provide the vital service. Other costs the charity has to pay includes VAT for the service, which cost the charity and its donors hundreds of thousands of euro per year.

Trump's wall hits a wall There hasn’t been much talk about Trump’s Wall in recent weeks but it is back in the international news again this week for two different reasons. Last September, Secretary of Defence, Mark Esper, authorised diverting $3.6 billion in the construction funds for 11 wall projects on the southern border with Mexico. The Pentagon said at the time that half the money was coming from deferred projects overseas, and the other half was planned for projects in the US.

This move met several legal challenges, many felt that Trump had by-passed Congress by diverting already allocated funds to his signature project. But a federal court hearing on Wednesday ruled that Defence Department funds could be used for the construction of the wall. “The United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has lifted an illegitimate nationwide injunction entered by a lower court, and in doing so has allowed vital border wall construction to move forward using military construction funds.

This is a victory for the rule of law. We are committed to keeping our borders secure, and we will finish the wall,” said the President’s press secretary on yesterday (Thursday). Now that construction has resumed, they better build it tall as US Border Patrol had to rescue three migrants on Sunday after they got stuck on top of the wall near San Diego. The man and two women tried to use dense fog to cover their attempt to climb a section of 30-foot-high fence - part of nearly 100 miles of replacement wall built by Trump. They cleared the primary fence along the border but became stuck on top of the secondary fence.

Entries open for Ring of Kerry Cycle Registration is now open for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle which will take place this year on July 4. “The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is considered a ‘bucket list’ experience by veterans of the annual event,” Bridget McGuire, Chairperson for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, said. “The route will undoubtedly test your fitness and endurance, but the camaraderie of fellow cyclists that travel all over the world just to take part, encouragement from spectators, and the knowledge that your fundraising efforts can make such a big difference to deserv-

ing charities is all the motivation you’ll need to get you around the route!” Each year, six charities are shortlisted from a long list of applicants to become approved beneficiaries of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. This year, cyclists can choose to raise much-needed funds for the following charities: Ard Chúram Day Care Centre, Listowel; Banna Rescue; Breakthrough Cancer Research; Cunamh Iveragh; Down Syndrome Ireland (Kerry branch) and St Francis Special School. fish’, because of its special sword-like snout to sense activity to find prey, such as crustaceans and fish. A new paper published in the ‘Science of the Total Environment’ concludes that the species has gone extinct, all because of overfishing and dam construction. It’s “a reprehensible and an irreparable loss,” says study leader Qiwei Wei of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, who’s been looking for the fish for decades.

Cancer bus needs drivers in South Kerry The Irish Cancer Society says it is experiencing a shortage of volunteer drivers in South Kerry and wants to recruit drivers to help transport people to hospital appointments. Last year, 50 Kerry patients were transported to 491 appointments, mainly to University Hospital Kerry or hospitals in Cork.

The society says there is a shortage of drivers in the Sneem, Cahersiveen, Waterville and Glenbeigh areas and anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should contact them by calling (01) 2310 594 or emailing transport@ irishcancer.ie. Volunteers should have two free weekdays every month, access to a mobile phone and an active email address.

Killarney Economic Conference planned later this month Economic, civic and political leaders from Ireland, the UK and Europe will gather for the third annual Killarney Economic Conference which has been confirmed for Friday, January 24. The one-day event, at The Brehon in Killarney, will see former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern reflecting on the Good Friday Agreement and the likely impact of Brexit on the future of Northern Ire-

land. The former Fianna Fáil leader will also share his views on the way forward for the North-South relationship. Carwyn Jones, the former First Minister of Wales, will discuss the policy achievements of its Labour government over the last decade and the lessons Ireland can draw in areas such as language policy and sustainability. Brexit is once again on the agenda, with key discussions based on its impact on Northern Ireland and Ireland’s econom-

ic and diplomatic relationship with Germany in a post Brexit world. Other topics for discussion include sustainable rural development and protecting the family business in the rapidly changing economy. Conference organiser, Dr William Sheehan, said family business is at the centre of the economy and is a principle provider of jobs, especially in rural Ireland. “Family businesses employ around 50

of the Irish work-force. Nevertheless, they face considerable challenges. Our panel has a deep and diverse range of experience with family business,” he said. Speakers lined up will include Ralf Litteck, CEO of the German-Irish Chamber of Commerce; Fiona Graham, Director of External Affairs and Policy at the Institute of Family Business; and John McGrane, Director-General of the British-Irish Chamber of Commerce.

CINDERELLA'S CLOSET

Tips for wedding dress shopping Buying your wedding dress should be one of the most exciting purchases of your life. Claire Dilworth from the multi-award winning bridal boutique Cinderella’s Closet Cork, has shared with us what she believes to be the biggest mistakes brides can make when on the search for their perfect wedding dress. With almost 15 years’ experience in the wedding industry, Claire also has some tips on how to avoid making these mistakes.

guess yourself and walk away from your perfect dress.

1. Lack Of Research My first tip is do your homework. Firstly decide how many bridal boutiques you wish to visit. As soon as you get engaged is the best time to start following your preferred boutiques on social media. It’s good to contact the boutique and ask them their price range. Look at reviews from previous customers.

4. Knowing Your Budget A good bridal consultant works best when they know your budget. If you know you have a set budget and you don’t give your bridal consultant that very important information you could end up falling in love with a dress that could blow your wedding budget. You also need to factor in accessories and dress alterations.

2. T aking Too Many People To Your Consultation At Cinderella’s Closet each bride has their own private consultation suite with a comfy couch for your guests. From experience it’s usually best not to bring too many people with you. Too many conflicting opinions may make you second

5. Shopping Too Late Try not to get caught out and limit your selection by leaving it too late, most designers need six to eight months to make your dress, however don’t panic if your wedding is sooner as your bridal consultant at Cinderella’s Closet will direct you to an off the rack selection of amazing wed-

3. Trying On Too Many Dresses This can make you lose sight of your vision. Keep note of the dresses you love, and trust your consultant if they suggest you try something you would not imagine as your style - we find it’s often the ONE!

6. Being Snobby about Sample Sales Buying a wedding dress sample from a high-end boutique can be a great opportunity for a bride on a budget. A high end boutique will only sell sample dresses that are in pristine condition at greatly reduced prices.

8. Settling For Poor Customer Service When shopping for your wedding dress, your experience should match your expectations. It should be about creating the happiest of memories. This is your moment to feel like an A-List celebrity with your own personal stylist at hand. Finally ladies, enjoy every moment and have some fun!

7. Wearing the Wrong Underwear Strapless underwear in a nude shade is ideal. If you would normally wear some form of supportive underwear under a dress then they are ideal to wear when wedding dress shopping.

Busy year ahead for vintage club The Kingdom, Veteran and Vintage Car Club has announced an impressive calendar of events ahead of the 2020 road run season.

Coveted KY 1 plate on a Peugeot 3008 The coveted 201 KY 1 registration plate will appear on a Peugeot 3008. Reen’s Garage Rathmore were quick off the mark on Thursday last when registrations for new cars opened for 2020. Before Christmas, the main Peugeot dealer for Kerry was awarded the coveted the Peugeot ‘Dealer of the Year’ award for third year running. On Thursday, dealer principal Tim Reen

secured the coveted KY 1 plate for new cars registered in the county since the licencing office in Shannon opened on January 2. It is the second year is a row that Reen’s Garage secured the sought after registration number. In some counties, Cork for example, the registration number is reserved for the Mayor or other such dignitaries. In Kerry it is offered on a first come first serve basis.

The largest classic car club in the county will run regular events from February to October starting with its annual dinner and dance in Tralee on February 22. The club’s first Cars ‘n Coffee Meet will take place on April 26, while the first of its evening road runs will take place on June 8. The club’s biggest undertaking is the

!

Ring of Kerry run scheduled for May 16 and 17. This year’s Ring of Kerry will be 41st edition of the popular run that attracts well over 100 vintage and classic cars. Cars n’ Coffee meets will continue through July 12, August 9, September 13 and October 18, while additional evening runs will take place on June 14 and 19. The Ballymac Run, the biggest evening road run of the season, will take place on July 17. The annual autumn run to Kenmare is scheduled for October 9 to 11.

Classic car season up and running The classic car season in Kerry gets underway this Sunday with Muskerry Vintage Club's annual Breakfast Meet. The event will run from 10am to 12.30pm at The Kerry Way pub in Glenflesk on Sunday, and owners of all vintage, classic, retro and unusual vehicles are welcome. The Muskerry Vintage Club was established in 1990 in Ballyvourney in the heart of the Muskerry Gaeltacht, and in the intervening 30 years has staged numerous events in west Cork and east Kerry, the highlight being the 100th anniversary of Ford in Cork event in 2017. Sunday’s meeting marks the start of the

club’s 30th anniversary celebrations. “You can expect up to 30 cars on Sunday,” Club Secretary Lar Cummins told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our event in Gougane Barra in October was attended by 80 people. We are very weather dependant and the owners of older cars tend to leave them at home if it’s very bad, but we are expecting a good gathering and everyone, not just club members, is welcome to bring a car.” Later in the year the club is hoping to mark its 30th anniversary in style. Its first event was a static display at the now discontinued Whit Sun Festival in Ballyvourney in 1991, one year after its foundation.

In loving memory of Mick Galvin Late of Ballaugh, Killarney Who died on 8th January, 2003.

Right now I’m in a different place And though we seem far apart I’m closer than I ever was… I’m there inside your heart I’m with you when you grieve each day And when the sun shines bright I’m there to share the sunsets, too… I’m with you every night I’m with you when the times are good, To share a laugh or two, And if a tear should start to fall… I’ll still be there for you And when the day arrives That we no longer are apart I’ll smile and hold you close to me… Forever in my heart.

Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same. Those special days will not return when we were all together, But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever.

He had a nature you could not help loving, And a heart that was purer than gold, And to those who knew him and loved him, His memory will never grow old.

I hold you tightly within my heart And there you shall remain Until the joyous day arrives That we will meet again. From your loving Mom, Liam, Melissa and Anthony.

SQUAD GAME KERRY MANAGER PETER KEANE HAS ADDED 11 NEW PLAYERS TO HIS EXTENDED PANEL

Who will captain the team? Can Kerry make the most of the advanced mark? Will Paudie Clifford and Tony Brosnan make the grade? Ahead of Kerry’s National League opener against Dublin on January 25, Adam Moynihan takes a look at the 20 burning questions for 2020

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Kerry boss Peter Keane has plenty to think about. Pic: Harry Murphy/Sportsfile.

It’s a glorious time of year to be a football fan. The weeks leading up to a new season are always filled with optimism; after all, until the first ball is kicked in two weeks’ time, we are all level on zero points. Technically, no one holds an advantage at this stage of proceedings – not even Dublin, who have more money and resources than the rest of us. However, it is also a time of great uncertainty. Issues which remain unresolved from the previous year roll over and are joined by new vexations, fresh concerns and a host of hitherto unfathomable conundrums. Some of these questions will be answered quickly enough, others may not be answered at all, at least not fully, but one thing is for sure: Kerry supporters will ask them anyway. Here are the 20 burning questions for 2020. 1. Will the Templenoe and Na Gaeil players miss the Dublin game? Quite possibly, yes. The GAA confirmed this week that the All-Ireland Intermediate and Junior Club finals will take place in Croke Park on January 25, the same venue and day as the National League Round 1 match between Dublin and Kerry. Templenoe are in the semi-final of the Intermediate and Na Gaeil are in the semi-final of the Junior and both Kerry champions are overwhelming favourites to advance to their respective finals. If they do, Kerry’s four Templenoe players and two Na Gaeil players will be unavailable for selection for their county. It promises to be a feast of Kerry football at HQ that Saturday, but Peter Keane might be walking into his first scrap of the season with one hand behind tied his back.

SPORT

10.1.2020 2. How seriously will Peter Keane take the league? Although the Kerry manager experimented with tactics and personnel during last year’s league campaign, his side remained competitive throughout and were probably the most consistent outfit in Division 1 (the final against Mayo aside). Kerry built momentum in the spring, which undoubtedly stood to them in the summer, so Keane is unlikely to change a winning formula by going through the motions in the league. Expect Kerry to go for it. 3. How will the new gear look on the players? A key question for the fashionistas amongst us. The unorthodox new home shirt was greeted with a lukewarm reception when it was unveiled in November (the exceptionally attractive 2017-18 jersey was a hard act to follow) but how will the yellow-sleeved version look on the players on the pitch? Diehard fans got their first glimpse of the new kit in action in the McGrath Cup tie against Cork. The jury is still out, if we’re being honest. The away shirt might be nicer. 4. Are any All-Ireland-winning minors ready for the next level? It is perhaps too soon for prodigious 18-year-olds Paul O’Shea and Paul Walsh to make their mark at senior level, though the former caught the eye by scoring 1-3 for an U20/senior amalgamation against Tipperary in the McGrath Cup. St Senan’s midfielder Barry Mahony and Castleisland half forward Adam Donoghue, both of whom played on the successful Kerry minor team of 2017, have been called up to the extended panel proper. 5. Which new players will make the grade? Eoghan O’Brien, Michael Potts, Pa Kilkenny, Seán T Dillon, Cormac Coffey, Barry Mahony, John Mark Foley, Paudie Clifford, Ronan Buckley, Adam Donoghue and Tony Brosnan have been added to the extended panel for 2020, bringing the number of players involved to 46 by this journalist’s count. Six of the new gang (Kilkenny, Dillon, Coffey, Mahony, Buckley and Donoghue) featured in the McGrath Cup while the others will be hoping to impress at training in the coming weeks. 6. Who will captain the team? East Kerry have the honours this year following their historic win over Dr Crokes in the county final and despite being just 20 years of age, star forward David Clifford appears to be the frontrunner for the role. The captaincy has become something of a poisoned chalice in recent times but that is unlikely to phase the two-time All-Star. Nothing does. In fact, the omens are good. The last time East Kerry had to nominate a captain they chose Glenflesk legend Séamus Moynihan, who led The Kingdom to their 32nd All-Ireland title in the year 2000.

CAPTAIN MATERIAL? David Clifford could be in line to captain Kerry this season. Pic: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile.

7. How dependent are Kerry on East Kerry? A bit, but not very. The issue of East Kerry’s continued dominance at U16, minor and U21 level was raised at a recent county board meeting, with Secretary Peter Twiss stating his concern that Kerry teams will become “very dependent” on a small geographical area. This year, 16 out of the 46 players on the extended panel hail from the district of East Kerry. Roughly a third. When you remove the senior clubs from the equation, only five players were eligible for East Kerry in 2019. It’s a healthy contingent for sure but we’re not at the “very dependent” stage just yet. 8. Can Kerry make their (advanced) mark? On paper, the new rule will benefit burly target men like Tommy Walsh, but catching the mark is only half the battle. Walsh is a decent kicker but he’s not a free-taker and some of the marks he made last year were just outside his range. From Kerry’s perspective, the ideal scenario is to get your best passers – the likes of David Moran, Seán O’Shea, Tom O’Sullivan and James O’Donoghue – in position and seek out 6’2” marksman David Clifford. The 2018 Young Player of the Year can score from any and all angles so a mark anywhere within a 35-metre arc of the goal would be as close to an automatic point as you could get. Of course, it’s far easier in theory than in practice – no ball Clifford goes to catch will be unchallenged – but he has all the tools to make the new rule work in his favour. 9. Who needs a big year? Everyone needs a big year if Kerry are to stop Dublin but going by last year, there’s more in Gavin White, Jack Barry, Paul Murphy and Paul Geaney. If Peter Keane can keep them fit and get them firing on all cylinders, Kerry will be in serious shape. 10. Have Kerry found their perfect 10? Dara Moynihan, Micheál Burns, Gavin O’Brien, Jonathan Lyne, Adrian Spillane, Diarmuid O’Connor and Gavin White all had a cut off the right half forward posi-

tion in 2019 and you’d have to say that they all had their moments, although the talents of Spillane, O’Connor and White are perhaps more suited to deeper-lying roles. The spot remains vacant for any of the aforementioned to stake a claim again this year but the addition to the extended panel of Paudie Clifford has set tongues around Kerry wagging. Clifford was exceptional for East Kerry in both 2018 and 2019 and with his athleticism, tenacity and ball skills he seems like a viable option for half forward. Clifford’s East Kerry teammate and fellow newcomer Ronan Buckley, who excelled on the wing and midfield in last year’s County Championship, is another interesting alternative. The Listry clubman lined out at No. 10 and captained the side in the McGrath Cup games against Cork and Tipperary, and was one of only four players to play every minute of both. 11. Will Tony Brosnan cut wreck at county level? Plenty of observers had been campaigning for Tony Brosnan to get the call for quite some time. Well, he’s here now. Can he seize his opportunity? The Dr Crokes sharpshooter is electrifying on his day and he has more days than most. It will be fascinating to see how he gets on at intercounty level. Could a full forward line of Geaney, Clifford and Brosnan be on the cards? 12. Who do Kerry need to beat? Dublin, naturally. Beyond that, Donegal and Mayo are sure to be there or thereabouts. Tyrone are also a threat, although much will depend on the availability of key player Cathal McShane, who is currently training with the Adelaide Crows in the AFL. The latest is that he should be available for Tyrone in 2020, if not thereafter. And don’t forget about Cork, who are on an upward trajectory and would love nothing more than to turn Kerry over in a Munster semi-final. 13. What do the bookmakers think? Despite being under new management with Dessie Farrell replacing Jim Gavin,

63

Dublin are odds on favourites to win both the league and their sixth All-Ireland in a row, with Kerry priced at 3/1 for both. 14. Has Shane Ryan cemented his place in goal? The Rathmore man had a decent first year between the sticks but there’s always room for improvement. He showed a very cool head with ball in hand and overall his kicking was good, but mistakes like the one in the National League final will have to be eradicated. Brian Kelly will be ready and willing to step in if needs be, while St Brendan’s and Churchill stopper Eoghan O’Brien has come in to add extra cover. 15. Is there a sweeper in our ranks? The dreaded sweeper position has been a bit of graveyard for Kerry defenders down through the years. Many have tried but not too many have succeeded. It’s a difficult role to assess because sometimes it may appear as though the sweeper is doing nothing, but if the ball isn’t coming near him then isn’t the sweeper, in a way, doing his job? Of course, if the ball is going in over his head uncontested, that’s a problem. Paul Murphy and Jack Sherwood are options but you would perhaps prefer to see them elsewhere. It’s a fairly specialised position; can we find a specialist to do the job? 16. How much can Keane squeeze out of David Moran? It’s no coincidence that Kerry’s rip-roaring performance against Mayo in Killarney came on the same day that their talismanic midfielder made an explosive return to form. Moran’s importance to Kerry cannot be understated but the team’s primary midfielder, who will be 32 in June, has been no stranger to the treatment table. Keane may use Moran sparingly in the spring, with one eye firmly on the summertime. 17. What will David Clifford do next? Captain Kerry to an All-Ireland? 18. Can James O’Donoghue replicate his club form? The Legion forward shrugged off a couple of injuries in 2019 to arguably emerge as his club’s Player of the Year. His impact at intercounty level was less marked but if he can transfer his club form over to the green and gold in the league, Peter Keane will have some tough decisions to make. 19. Who will have a breakout year? Diarmuid O’Connor is a good shout. The Na Gaeil midfielder/half forward did really well when called upon towards the tail end of last year and he was the standout performer for his divisional side, St Brendan’s, as they reached the last four of the County Championship. The talented 20-year-old could play a big part for Kerry in 2020. 20. What will Kerry fans be expecting in 2020? A 38th All-Ireland.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

8/10. Very good year overall as we bridged a 43year gap in the O’Donoghue Cup. We were unlucky to miss out on a club final and a county league final also.

7.5 out of 10. We won a Munster final and integrated a lot of new players but ultimately we came up short in two national finals.

LOW POINT

LOW POINT

The second half against St Brendan’s was a very poor showing by us. It was disappointing to go out at the quarter-final stage again this year.

HIGHLIGHT

The O’Donoghue Cup win. To finally give the Legion supporters something to celebrate was fantastic. Great memories made.

MVP

Losing the All-Ireland final replay.

HIGHLIGHT

The performance in, and occasion of, the Super 8 match against Mayo or the second half against Tyrone.

MVP

Jameso. He had a tough time with injuries throughout the year but he was ever-present for Legion in the big games and produced the goods.

Seán O'Shea performed very well consistently through the whole year.

UNSUNG HERO

Tadhg Morley was a big leader in the defence.

FUTURE STAR

Diarmuid O'Connor.

IN 2020, YOUR TEAM WILL…

hopefully challenge for trophies again.

UNSUNG HERO FUTURE STAR

That’s an easy one. Kieran Slattery. Warrior.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

2/10. I suppose things just didn’t go right in the finals we played; losing four finals in a calendar year is tough going. After losing the likes of Gooch, Eoin Brosnan and Shane Doolan it was always going to be tough. We also got hit with some unfortunate injuries.

We aimed to stay in Division 1 again and we did but losing in the group stage of the Intermediate and semi-final of the O’Donoghue Cup meant it was hard to be overly happy with the year. 5/10.

LOW POINT

Losing to Crokes in the O’Donoghue Cup was tough but to lose the first game of the Intermediate was a sickening start to the championship.

LOW POINT

The county final was a tough one to take. Things just didn’t go right on the day and East Kerry, to be fair to them, were brilliant.

HIGHLIGHT

Getting to a county final is always a massive moment for any club and also the All-Ireland club was a highlight. Unfortunately, we fell short in both.

MVP

Tony Brosnan was pure class throughout the year. He does pass the ball too the odd time. Smiler was also immense. He has been some servant for the Crokes and he still has a few years left in him yet.

UNSUNG HERO

Matt Courtney, James Hurley and Joe Maye every night up in training. Seán Coppinger and Cian O’Neill are also always available for the club.

FUTURE STAR

Mikey Potts is a very good footballer. Michael Lenihan is one who will hopefully join the team next year. Daniel Healy also if he makes the transfer back from Limerick.

IN 2020, YOUR TEAM WILL…

hopefully come back with that bit of hunger to start the year off well. The Club Championship will be a big focus this year.

HIGHLIGHT

The highlight would have to be retaining our Division 1 status, and not having to look at Evan Cronin for a whole summer.

MVP

I'm gonna go with the Kid because if we tell him lies like this then he might actually turn up to training more than once a month this year.

UNSUNG HERO

The unsung hero of every year since I started playing is Shane Fenton. Never misses training and never a complaint about anything.

FUTURE STAR

Connie Cremin I reckon has a big future with us. His brother Ollie in goal is very good too but he'll have to wait another 15 years for Devane to retire.

IN 2020, YOUR TEAM WILL…

continue to improve, hopefully.

Winning the All-Ireland Intermediate in February, retaining our senior status and staying up in Division 1 means it was an 8/10.

LOW POINT

Most of it.

LOW POINT

HIGHLIGHT

The low point was the poor performance against St Kieran’s which knocked us out of the County Championship.

Beating St Michael’s Foilmore to avoid the relegation playoffs. We were missing most of our team.

MVP

HIGHLIGHT

Eoin Talbot and Brian Myers played well in fairness.

MVP

Lee Lenihan when it comes to pool anyway.

UNSUNG HERO

Emmett O’Shea, Killian Buckley and Colm Talbot have bright futures ahead.

FUTURE STAR

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

We were up against it due to a lot of injuries and fellas away which saw us struggle for a bit, but we ended up getting promoted to Division 2. With a tough group in the Junior, we didn’t get through but went close in all the games. We lost the Fr Galvin Cup final to a good Gneeveguilla side.

7/10. We won Division 2 of the league but lost our championship semi-final.

Losing to Finuge in the first round of the the Junior was a huge disappointment.

In the absence of the majority of the experienced players, seeing the younger girls perform as well as they did and bring home the trophy in the league final against a strong Milltown/Castlemaine side.

LOW POINT

HIGHLIGHT

Getting promoted. Our backs were to the wall - we had the bare 15 for certain games - and we dug out results.

MVP

Paul Donoghue. The complete baller despite spending most of his time on the ground.

UNSUNG HERO

Donagh Regan. Life and soul of the squad.

LOW POINT

Losing a number of players due to injuries and illness and losing the championship semi-final.

HIGHLIGHT

MVP

Holly Power, who unfortunately couldn't play for the majority of the year, is an inspiration to all of her teammates. Her bravery and positive outlook in the face of everything that has been thrown at her this year is a constant motivation. We can't wait to have her back on the field with us.

UNSUNG HERO

FUTURE STAR

Jade Potts. She always comes up with a score when it's needed.

IN 2020, YOUR TEAM WILL…

Kate Stack on her day is unplayable. There’s plenty left in Marian O'Callaghan also if we could keep her out of Jimmy's!

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR TEAM’S YEAR OUT OF 10?

I have to give it a 10. We won the competition out so we couldn’t do much more.

We had a good first half of the year and finished top of the league but a combination of below-par performances and a massive injury list led to a disappointing second half of the year. 3/10.

LOW POINT

The first round loss to St Brendan’s. We didn’t perform at all.

HIGHLIGHT

Obviously the final and the manner in which we won, closely followed by the comeback against Kerins O’Rahilly’s.

MVP

LOW POINT

Losing our senior status. That’s about as low as it gets!

HIGHLIGHT

Finishing top of the County League and seeing five quality minors making the step up to the senior team.

Either one of the Cliffords.

Chrissie Spiers has been a great addition but I have to give it to Colm Kelly.

Solid year overall. Plenty of positives to be taken from the year. 8/10.

I’d give it a 5 out of 10.

LOW POINT

Darragh Roche getting a 12-week suspension and getting relegated to Division 3.

LOW POINT

Losing to Na Gaeil in the county semi-final in a really close game that could have gone either way.

HIGHLIGHT

HIGHLIGHT

I suppose it would have to be winning back-to-back promotions in the County League and getting back up to Division 2.

For those involved, winning the County Championship with East Kerry.

MVP

Darragh Roche was simply our go-to man. A serious baller.

I couldn’t single out anyone in particular. We were lucky enough to have a balanced enough team. The strength and depth of our panel played a huge part in our performances during the year.

UNSUNG HERO

Shane ‘Lal’ O’Sullivan for the endless hours of work he puts in on the training ground.

FUTURE STAR

By all accounts there’s a good up and coming prospect rising through the ranks. Pádraig Doyle is his name. It’s only early days yet though. He’s still fierce young.

Killarney writer pens fascinating rowing book | By Eamonn Fitzgerald There was no shortage of books covering a wide variety of sports for the Christmas 2019 market, but my favourite was Something in the Water, penned by Killarney native Kieran McCarthy. Kieran was a journalist with The Kingdom newspaper before he took up his present position as sports editor of The Southern Star, the West Cork weekly newspaper. The world-class exploits of Gary and Paul O’Donovan, silver medallists for rowing at the 2016 Olympics, put Skibbereen Rowing Club on the world stage. Great and all as that was, the genesis for this book was the extraordinary achievements of the rowing club from the banks

of the Ilen River, which runs through the middle of this small town in West Cork. Skibbereen Rowing club is the most successful rowing club in Ireland, more successful than the big city clubs with 181 national titles. It has produced five Olympic rowers and four world champions. The author gives due credit to these exploits, but the real attraction for the reader is that he delves deep to capture the ethos of the club and the sense of community spirit for the townspeople. You get to know the characters that make this club tick. Founding fathers Donie Fitzgerald, Richard Hosford and Danny Murphy had a dream in 1970 and planted the seed for success. There wasn’t a bob around, but that did not phase them. They had one

great natural resource, the Ilen river, and that has been the magic carpet which has powered their dreams ever since. Success was earned by dedication to a tough training schedule. The author appreciates the key role that Dominic Casey played in the success story. He is the driven coach, the catalyst for success at top level. He keeps the rowers tuned in at all times. No matter where he is he keeps in touch with regular emails to those in the boats. His mantra is spot on. The Skibbereen way is to keep the race tactics simple, but put in the hard work on those training spins. He is a shy character, shunning publicity and hating to deal with the media after all those suc-

cesses. Kieran McCarthy gets inside the self-effacing mind of Dominic and the influence of Norwegian coach Thor Nilsen, a walking encyclopaedia on rowing, is also well documented. Rowing is Killarney’s oldest sport, so the many members of the various local clubs will find this a fascinating read, but it has much wider appeal, because Kieran McCarthy has written an invaluable social history of Skibbereen. His nice easy style makes for easy reading. I found it unputdownable. It is his first book; will there be another one? He has seen the rabbit hole. The book is available in Easons.

Lakers fall short against leaders NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 ___________________________________________________________________________________

Scotts Lakers

OVERALL

68 | Ballincollig 88

KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE The Scotts Lakers were hoping to close the gap at the top last Saturday night but instead they fell to a disheartening 20-point defeat to league leaders Ballincollig, bringing to an abrupt end their four-game winning streak. The Cork side dominated from start to finish with imports Iñigo Zabalo and Andre Nation in particular catching the eye; the latter registered 36 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and three steals in a virtuoso display for which the hosts simply had no answer. Ballincollig remain undefeated after 14 games with the Lakers set for a dogfight with Fr Mathews for the No. 2 spot as we head into the final third of the season.

BEST

It was pretty much one-way traffic in the battle between first and third as Nation, considered by many to be the best player in the division, wasted no time in taking over. His three midway through the first quarter had Ballincollig ahead by double scores, 9-18, as the Lakers struggled to get their shot going. Eventually a pair of threes by Xavier Talton and Toby Christensen cut the deficit to a single basket but Nation rounded off the period with a superb and-one play to re-open that nine-point gap. The Lakers’ struggles in the second were typified by their inability to knock down free throws as threes by Zabalo and the excellent Ciarán O’Sullivan helped the visitors to push their lead out to 20. When Zabalo found Nation for a spectac-

ular alley-oop to make it 24-51 late in the second, the writing was very much on the wall. Aaron Jackson drained a long three in the third to shave some points off the intimidating lead but he and his teammates were growing increasingly frustrated with some questionable calls by one of the officials. At one stage, a Ballincollig shot bounced up off the rim, hit the top of the backboard and clipped the wires holding up the goal. The ball should have been called out of bounds but it was missed by the officials, and the rebound was gathered by the attacking team. The hosts were furious and clearly felt as though they were being hard done by. They weren’t wrong but, in the interest of fairness, it must also be stated that they were beaten by a much better team on the day. The fourth quarter was a bit of a nonevent in truth as Ballincollig ran out convincing 20-point winners. It was a tough night for Shane McCarthy’s team but the good news is that they still have eight games to catch Fr Mathew’s, who are just one win ahead in second. A second-place finish would secure the Lakers a playoff with the second-from-bottom team in the Super League, with the winners playing topflight basketball next season.
