Investigation ongoing in Ballyspillane arson attack Two males, who were arrested by Gardai on Saturday, in relation to an arson attack at a house in Hazelwood Drive, Ballyspillane have been released without charge. CONTRACTS SIGNED: Cathal O'Brien (Chairman Killarney Micro Track second from left) and Cllr Niall Kelleher (Chairman Kerry Local Action Group) signing the contracts for the Killarney Micro Track at St Brendan's College, Killarney on Monday.
Contracts signed for micro track project Construction to being next month | By Sean Moriarty The sod was finally turned for the Killarney Micro Track on Monday evening - with construction confirmed to begin on June 24. The micro track, also known South and East Kerry Community Rural Track project, will be located at St Brendan’s College, and will benefit up to 2,000 students from nearby schools, athlet-
ic clubs, paralympic athletes, Special Olympics athletes and community groups. The committee behind the project still face a shortfall of around €100,000 which they hope to offset with a loan. However, at Monday’s sod-turning ceremony they received news from Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) that funds from the club’s annual vintage tractor raffle will go directly towards the micro-track.
“The group hope to reduce and indeed even eliminate the loan with help of the community as it benefits all,” committee member Jerry Griffin said. “The sod turning ceremony was a matter of great pride for the members of the group, who represent such a diverse range of groups from within Killarney life.” “Now that people see the facility in construction,” Sean O’Sullivan, Chairman of Kerry Community said, “build it and they will come.”
“What’s the cost to our health?” Locals plan to fight planning for battery storage compound | By Michelle Crean East Kerry locals plan to fight against a planned 40 unit battery compound which they say will destroy their community and potentially their health – if built. Kerry County Council has given the go ahead for Redfaze Limited to build the battery storage site at Ballynahulla, Ballydesmond, which will house 40 battery units, transformers and associated equipment. Battery storage compounds store
excess electricity generated by windfarms when the wind is high - and release it back into the grid when the turbines are slack. However, up to 300 angry and frustrated locals from the Gneeveguilla, Knocknagree, Scartaglin, Kiskeam and Newmarket areas, met to discuss their concerns in Ballydesmond Community Hall on Wednesday night. They fear that the batteries are potentially at high risk of going on fire which would lead to an evacuation of a 10 mile radius in the area.
An accelerant was thrown at the front of the house and a car damaged outside in the early hours of April 18 when a family, including adults and children were asleep inside. It’s believed the separate arrests, the first on Saturday morning and the other on Saturday afternoon, were not made in Killarney. A number of properties were also searched as part of the investigation. A Garda spokesperson said that both males were released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP. “It is very much a live and ongoing investigation."
Concerned residents now plan to lodge an appeal against planning permission for the facility on health and safety grounds with An Bord Pleanala next week. “There’s disbelief ,” local Anita O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “Longford County Council refused planning for a six battery facility due to a health and safety risk and Kerry County Council granted one that’s five times bigger than that. Words can’t even fathom how planning was granted. We can’t comprehend how they can do it.”
She explained that the battery compound is connected to the wind turbines to help regulate power going onto the grid, but said that locals weren’t even consulted about it. “The planning application was found by pure luck when a local was out walking,” she said. “What is the cost to our health? Our community will be destroyed. There’s a high risk the batteries could go on fire creating toxic smoke, and if that happens people within a 10 mile radius have between three and 10 minutes to evacuate the area. It takes 36 hours for a battery to quench itself out if it goes on fire,” she said. “There’s 40 of them – we could be on high alert for weeks or even months. You wonder how a human being can allow this!”

Killarney Sanctuary Runners set to launch | By Sean Moriarty Running enthusiasts who would like to join an organisation that extends friendship, via running, to people in Direct Provision are invited to attend a public meeting next week.
NEW COPYBOOK: Holy Cross Mercy School teacher Breda Courtney Murphy released a new comprehensive children's writing copy book. She is pictured here alongside Senior Infant students Amelia Spillane and Lily O'Donoghue. Photo: Sally MacMonagle.
Local teacher gives pupils a helping hand The old art of handwriting has not died - but teachers may never have to dot pages again - thanks to a new copy designed by a local teacher. | By Anne Lucey Killarney school teacher, Breda Courtney Murphy, has been dotting the copies of young pupils for the last 22 years at Holy Cross Mercy, to help them master the art of writing. With 37 years-experience as a teacher, Breda not only wrote a number of text books including ‘Start!’ a pre-reading/ pre-writing skills book for Junior Infants, but she has also designed ‘Mrs Murphy’s Copies’ to take the frustration out of endless hours of dotting copies for teachers - as well as ease the way for new generations of hand-writers. The copies, which are 100 percent Irish, come with instructions for posture and pencil grip for Junior and Senior Infants. They also have colourful semi-cartoon covers designed to make learning fun. The pre-cursive copies with red and blue lines are pre-dotted to help young fingers trace their first writing marks and letters and are already printed and packaged. Breda launched the new product at the recent INTO conference in Galway and they were an immediate hit. “It is little known that while we are in the age of iPads and computers, teach-
ers still spend hours dotting copies so children can form their first letters – but teachers are only too well aware of it,” Breda said. The future artisans, surgeons and mechanics, may not use handwriting as much as before but the dexterity they learn through handwriting will always be necessary, Mrs Murphy explained. “Children struggle with letter heights and the red and blue lines help them and offer support until they become confident writers.” But the old proscription on the ciotóg is long gone and the natural inclination for writing with the left hand is fully accommodated in the new copies. Junior Infant children can start their Pattern Copy on day one of the new school year. All 26 letters, lower case for Juniors and capitals for Seniors are developed. Words and sentences are phonetically based and there are sections with revision/assessment throughout. Breda’s other text books include ‘Window on the World’ and ‘Exercise Your English’. Soon ‘Mrs Murphy's Copies’ is moving onto developing fully cursive handwriting copies for First Class onwards.
The Sanctuary Runners, who encourage Irish people to run alongside, and in solidarity with those in Direct Provision, bringing greater awareness to the system in which asylum seekers live, will meet next Tuesday night, at the John Paul II Pastoral Centre on Rock Road. Sanctuary Runners was officially launched in Dublin last November where they partake in regular 5k runs in Clondalkin. Mike O'Riordan is a member of Killarney Valley Athletic Club and participates in the Parkruns in Muckross every Saturday. He has arranged for Sanctuary Runners founder, Glenbeigh man, Graham Clifford to launch the initiative in Kerry. Graham was inspired to launch Sanctuary Runners after witnessing a solidarity-inspired initiative which brought together 200 runners, spanning 40 different na-
tionalities for last June’s Cork City Marathon. “After the success of the marathon in Cork we decided it was important to set up similar groups across the country,” Graham said. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from those in Dublin and already have 80 Irish runners signed up to run with us here when they can.” Mike O'Riordan, who formerly worked with the Killarney Asylum Seekers Initiative (KASI) will coordinate the Killarney Sanctuary Runners. “Whether you run every week or haven’t run for years this movement will welcome you just the same,” Mike said. “Many of the people who will run with us from Direct Provision won’t have taken part in physical exercise for a long time and often the energy and motivation required to do it can be low. You don’t have to run, you can jog a little or just walk too. So together we hope to use this healthy, fun initiative to get people fit again, to put smiles on faces, to bring people together and to show what a caring, compassionate and welcoming town Killarney really is.”

RALLY
10.05.2019

True rally fans return to Killarney for 40th Rally of the Lakes | By Sean Moriarty
An estimated 60,000 people descended on Killarney for the weekend for the 40th anniversary of the Rally of the Lakes. The action-packed weekend, run by the Killarney and District Motor Club, kickedoff with a ceremonial start in the Fairhill car park on Friday evening and ended on an even higher note when local co-driver Paul Nagle guided Craig Breen to victory - becoming the first Killarney man to win the rally. Friday’s start event attracted over 2,000 people who were entertained by local music legend Liam O’Connor and members of his band and Irish dance troupe. It marked the public’s first chance to meet event ambassador, Hollywood A-lister and local man Michael Fassbender, who was participating in the new for 2019 Lake Rally Fest section of the rally in a Ford Escort Mk2. The ceremonial start celebrated 40 years of the event and many of the cars that featured in the history of the rally were lined up on static display. “We set out to bring the rally to the people and the people to the rally and Friday’s event was full of families enjoying themselves which is exactly what we wanted,” Dermot Healy, Clerk of the Course, said. “I was blown away by it,” Mike Moriarty, main organiser of Friday night’s event, added. “It was just great to see so many people enjoying themselves and having fun. We started the rally on a high.”
BIG CROWDS IN ATTENDANCE
The real action started on Saturday morning when the 140 or so competitors tackled the first of 16 special stages. The rally visited the Beara Peninsula on Saturday before stages in the Kenmare area on Sunday morning. It concluded with four tests in the Rathmore and Glenflesk areas where thousands of fans gathered to witness local man Nagle win his home rally. “It was like the good old days,” Pat Healy, Event Spectator Safety Officer, said, referring to the great days when the rally was attended by real rally fans and not tarnished by the influx of so-called boy racers who have tried to disrupt the rally in recent years. The club works tirelessly behind the scenes with local and national Gardai in an effort to keep the trouble-makers out of town. Prior to the weekend, the message from both the organisers and
the Gardai was clear – boy racers are not welcome. “Over the weekend, the crowds were like old Circuit of Ireland days and we ran a safe event for the enjoyment of all these people. We had 230 volunteer marshals out there and this is our team that makes this happen,” added Dermot Healy. The Circuit of Ireland last visited Killarney in 1983, but rallying has been associated with Killarney since the 1930s and Killarney and District Motor Club maintain this tradition.
CELEBRATIONS
The finish ramp celebrations outside the Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday evening was another historic occasion. Thousands of fans greeted rally champions Craig Breen and local co-driver Paul Nagle as they drove their Ford Fiesta R5 over the ramp. “Huge thanks to all the team at Killarney and District Motor Club for their hard work in making this happen,” Nagle said. Nagle became the first Kerry competitor
to win all four Kerry tarmac rallies. His first major success was the 2003 Kerry Winter Rally alongside Sean Gallagher from Leitrim. The following April he won the Circuit of Kerry with his great friend Donie O’Sullivan and later that year guided John Moynihan to victory on the Killarney Historic Rally. He also won the now discontinued Killarney Forestry in 2002 with Eugene Donnelly in a Subaru Impreza WRC. That night’s awards presentation in the INEC was also well-attended. Other local drivers to do well included Rob Duggan and Mikie Galvin. They lost five minutes on Saturday when their Ford Escort suffered a puncture, but they drove for their lives all-day Sunday. Starting day two from 14th position in the national they recovered to finish second and took home the coveted John Mullane Cup for the best local crew in their Ford Escort – see our sports section on pages 66 and 67 for a full report on the rally. 11 men charged with dangerous driving | By Anne Lucey One local man was among the 11 men in their twenties that appeared before Killarney District Court on Tuesday, each charged with dangerous driving on Sunday afternoon, May 5 near Moll’s Gap. The men were arrested as part of a significant Garda clampdown during last weekend’s Rally of the Lakes. Aged between 21 and 27, the men, with addresses from Roscommon to Cork were well dressed and clean shaven and sat quietly in the court. The men, including one man from Firies, were charged that on May 5 at Derrynafunsha, Blackwater, Kenmare they drove a vehicle in a manner, including speed on a public road which was dangerous, and contrary to Section 53 (1) of the Road Traffic Act. These arrests near Moll's Gap were made at the same time the rally was happening near Rathmore. Killarney solicitors Dan O’Connor, Liam Ryan and Padraig O’Connell, and a solicitor from a Dublin firm, applied for disclosure, and Mr O’Connell said this must
include CCTV as there was a Garda surveillance operation ongoing at the time in the area. Judge David Waters said CCTV and such was a standard part of disclosure along with documents. The matter has been put back to June 18 next, for disclosure and to fix a hearing date. "We were very pleased with how the rally went,” Superintendent Flor Murphy said. “There’s been great work done between the Gardai, Killarney and District Motor Club and all other agencies and it’s paying dividends for a much better rally for everybody. Public safety is our priority.” The numbers arrested were down significantly from previous years as rally organisers and Gardai worked together to eliminate the boy racer element from the rally. “The majority of incidents were observed by plainclothes Gardaí who were deployed as part of the policing plan for the event. Checkpoints were carried out by the Kerry Divisional Roads Policing Unit throughout the weekend and four drivers were arrested on suspicion of drink/drug driving,” a Garda statement said.
cartell.ie to extend rally sponsorship agreement cartell.ie, has committed to sponsoring the Rally of the Lakes for another three years. The company have sponsored the rally for the past 10 years and will continue to back the rally until 2023, they confirmed this week. KDMC celebrated the 40th running of the famous rally last weekend, and as well as the traditional sporting element, the club laid on a host of side events to mark the occasion, which impressed senior man-
agement at the company. "We're delighted to be staying on board for another three years,” John Byrne from cartell.ie said. “We have always been thrilled at the organisation and efficiency of the Rally of the Lakes, but this year, to mark its 40th anniversary, we were genuinely honoured to be a part of such a spectacular gathering. We wish the Rally of the Lakes the very best into its future - and there is no better way of expressing this than committing to another run."

Ger Buckley, who won the 1980 Rally of the Lakes was reunited the Vauxhall Chevette HSR that he drove to victory 39 years ago. Buckley was one of Ireland’s top rally drivers in the early 1980s and won many events all over the country. A cousin of the legendary Billy Coleman, he won the Rally of the Lakes in 1980 driving a Vauxhall Chevette that was originally built by the factory rally team. Buckley enjoyed tremendous success during the early 1980s and drove the famous Vauxhall to victory on several rallies including the 1981 Circuit of Kerry and Cork ‘20’ International Rally. He sold the car to his north Cork neighbour Demi Fitzgerald who went on to win the 1981 Rally of the Lakes and backto-back Circuit of Kerry rallies in 1982 and 1983.
The car was restored in 2017 and Buckley did get to see the car then as part of a private family event, but Friday was the first public appearance of the car and Buckley himself in years. He was joined by his family and rekindled friendships with some of his old rivals and friends. “Thanks to the club for the invite,” said his son Patrick. “We all had a great evening and he enjoyed the excitement. Thanks to all the crew and those involved for making Gerald so welcome to Killarney on Friday night.” Patie Murphy from Headford, and Dubliner Mike Dunnion, are two other former owners of the car and they were also in attendance.
Fassbender was not the only celebrity in Killarney for the rally. On Saturday, F1 Grand Prix legend Tommy Byrne from Dundalk was a guest of the rally throughout Sunday. 'I was out and about on Sunday watching the rally, the organisation was superb, I had no idea what was involved in running an event this size,” said Byrne. “I will be back and next time I would like to participate.” Byrne rewarded the Killarney and District Motor Club volunteers by hosting an audience at the Gleneagle Hotel on Wednesday night. His feature-length documentary Crash and Burn was screened to an appreciative audience and he engaged the club’s members in an entertaining Q&A session.

Registration open for tonight’s ‘Nathan’s Walk’ Darkness into Light Organisers of the annual ‘Nathan’s Walk’ Darkness into Light event will open registration desks at Killarney Racecourse from 3pm today (Friday). The annual walk, which gets underway at 4.15am on Saturday morning raises funds for self-harm charity Pieta House. Nathan’s Walk was the first such event outside Dublin, but Darkness into Light is now a worldwide event. The local walk was founded by Marie O’Carroll who lost her son Nathan to suicide in 2007, when he was aged 14. To-date over €350,000 has been raised for the charity by participants in the local event. Already over 800 people have signed up online but Marie will take walk-in entries too and that is why she is opening registration at the racecourse from 3pm today. “We will be there until around 9pm for anyone who wants to register,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “After that we will go home for a lie down before returning again at 1am to get it all organised.” The 5k walk follows its traditional route from the racecourse, via Ross Castle, along the lake shore walk and back to the racecourse where refreshments will be
served to all participants. Darkness into Light is a worldwide event, with walks taking place in hundreds of locations, each of them starting at 4.15am local time. London will host two events for the first time and both of them are organised by
They say unless land is donated by a kind-hearted local or Kerry County Council can offer a site – plans will have to be scrapped for now – unless they can come up with the money to buy a site locally. Padruig O’Sullivan, Chairman of Beaufort Community Council, who has been working on the project for a number of years with locals, says the committee are disappointed that they can’t progress the project. “There was a site identified four years ago and we were looking at that,” Padruig told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The cost of the site was a six figure sum, over €100,000. It appears to be the only site available. We contacted Kerry County Council but they didn’t have any
“Being a Killarney man myself we will strive at our newly established Hazelwood walk to mirror the fantastic fundraising work and support being generated by our own Killarney woman Tara Cronin at the north-west London Walk venue,” Liam said.

funding to assist with the purchase of the site.” He’s says they’re disappointed not to be able to develop the site sooner as Beaufort has a vibrant and young community. “There’s a very young vibrant community and they would all like to have this facility within our community rather than have to travel to other towns. The cost of buying it - at the moment it’s beyond our means. We have to put it on hold.” Councillor Michael Cahill has also called on Kerry County Council to assist the residents of Beaufort. He said it is very unfair that a parish the size of Beaufort, with a large number of families with young children does not have such a facility within their community, and that Kerry County Council should also take into consideration the popularity of Beaufort as a holiday destination and the large number of young families who holiday in the area. "Beaufort Community Council have
endeavoured to secure a site for a playground over the past couple of years and I am now calling on the Council to renew their efforts,” Cllr Cahill said. "Surely there is a suitable site available somewhere in Beaufort." Acting Area Manager John Breen from Kerry County Council said that they have offered significant assistance to the local community group in Beaufort to develop a playground within the village. "To date, efforts have been hampered by the absence of a suitable site. The Council does not have any lands in the area that would meet the required specifications
for a playground site. The local group are to continue with their efforts to identify and secure a site." In the meantime, Beaufort locals continue in their efforts to make their community a better place to live and are currently fundraising to help upgrade the old community centre which was built in the 1970s. They have €53,000 Leader funding ringfenced for this but need to gather a further €20,000. They are planning a concert with Sean Keane tonight (Friday) in the Dunloe Hotel, at 8pm. Tickets are still available and are €25 each.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
The great Kerry political dynasties are thinning So there are 10 candidates for seven seats in Killarney and six of the contenders are sitting councillors. There is hardly a stampede. I wondered was it the worst ever election in terms of candidates or even interest – in total for the 33 Council seats up for grabs there are just 62 candidates – and almost half of these are sitting councillors! In 2009, when the County Council was still at a sensible number, there were 51 candidates for the 27 seats. In Killarney town alone in 2009, there were 15 candidates for the nine seats of the Town Council and there were 12 for the seven seats of the County Council Killarney area. And whilst in Killarney it was not quite 12 plus 15 different people as three of those running for the county were also running for the town, there was a hell of a lot more interest and a great deal more excitement. You had a turnout of 71 percent in the county. In 2014, the year that abolished the Town Council, turnout dropped 10 percentage points. A number of things strike me, with the finalisation of the candidates in Kerry 2019. Our population has shifted a lot and we have thousands of non-native
Irish living and working amongst us. But not a single candidate from the non-Irish is seeking a voice in the Killarney, Kenmare, Tralee, Corca Dhuibhne, Listowel and Castleisland local electoral areas. You have not a single Polish, English, Nigerian, Bangladeshi or Brazilian running for local office. Why is this? The great Kerry political dynasties no longer have interest and are thinning the last Spring, Mayor of Tralee, is not running, and there is no O’Donoghue. The old parties Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have found it very difficult to get candidates in the urban areas, and in Killarney John Sheahan has no second. The expensive poster campaigns to catch the attention of voters, and even the door-to-door canvassing strikes me as outdated and certainly not in tune with climate concerns. Sticking plasters are being put on the axing of the Town Council with a redrawing once again of these monsters, the municipal districts, with a tighter focus on Killarney town this
time. It is to be hoped that the town will get more attention. How much better Tralee fared in the past five years shows us how local Councils do have power, if they use their influence at chamber and on officials. There is no excuse for the lack of progress in Killarney apart from not having enough councillors from the town, perhaps. Killarney’s traffic problems worsen, the toilet problem at the courthouse remains, Áras Padraig lies untouched, St Finan’s and its lands lie empty,
Language barrier! France is bringing in an even tougher language test for immigrants who wish to take out residency or become citizens to insure better integration. Italy has introduced a language test also. Last November, Department of Justice officials told me they were considering one for this country. It is much needed. I was at one of the three citizenship ceremonies for 2,400 over a week ago at the INEC, a well-run occasion that was full of joy. But several of those I tried to speak to had such poor English, I gave up. How are people to be integrated if they are here for eight years and more as in some of the cases I tried to communicate with - if they cannot string a sentence together? there is no pedestrian crossing still at the Monsignor O’Flaherty statue, there is no plaque to the McShains and the Great Hall of Culture that noone really has much inkling for, and knows little about, is being done up! Meanwhile holding the local elections on the day of the Europeans, and a referendum and a plebiscite thrown in, reflects the attitude towards local Government in this country - it will be Sunday before the count for the Killarney, Kenmare, Tralee and Listowel areas even begins!
It’s high time we recognised the women of Killarney I notice we have two women running in Killarney, no woman in Corca Dhuibhne and Castleisland, one woman in Listowel, two in Kenmare and five women candidates in Tralee. But whatever about the few women in politics, the lack of recognition, so far, of women’s contribution to tourism in this town continues. I was reminded of this on the death recently of Eileen Fitzgerald of Tuscar House in Fossa. Like others, the late Eileen - I think too of Kitty Lucey, Bridie Brosnan of New Street, Min Casey, Marie Treacy and Sheila O’Donoghue and dozens of others - she was a vital part of the great wave of B&Bs, guesthouses and small hotels of the 1960s and 1970s which kick started the tourist industry
that we have now: family businesses that helped spread the Irish welcome and rear families, contributed to the local economy and gave women a few bob of their own at a time when the workplace was largely closed to them under the rules of holy male Fianna Fail Ireland. I was intrigued therefore to read only Wednesday in The Irish Times the piece by Aisling Hassell, Vice President of Airbnb in Dublin. This is what she wrote: “Airbnb is built on the principles of making communities stronger and spreading tourism benefits to local families and businesses.” Well now, the women of Killarney did this almost 60 years ago! It is high time we recognised not just the women in
the B&Bs and hotels, some of which are now big hotels whose sons and daughters and grandchildren now earn their livelihoods from; the women who ran down to work the weddings and other events for a pound at lunch, or the women who lifted heavy crates of washing up, or the women who did the laundry, the cooking and changed the beds, or those who were smart and presentable enough to don the black and white uniform of the waitress in the hotels in the 1920s, the 1940s and ‘50s, or stood, and still stand, behind the check-in desks, or the myriad other tasks which has built this multi-million euro industry that is now the envy of Ireland. We have covered this town in murals and statues of men, and named roads
exclusively after men in the foreign missions, or male industrialists and male politicians. And as I have written elsewhere previously, in Killarney women must either be the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Aisling Gheal of the Spéirbhean to have a statue or a plaque, or be recognised in Killarney – they can’t be real. Women built the tourism industry in Killarney and they worked in it: It is high time we had that mural, that plaque and that statue to the women of Killarney, ‘The Killarney Girls’ perhaps in period costume, just something that will finally reflect the very real contribution of the women of this town to the tourism industry. Now that’s one for the politicians calling on doorsteps for a vote.

Local life-saving group launch their first website Local life-saving group HeartBeat Killarney Kerry have launched a brand new website this week to appeal to a younger audience. The voluntary cardiac support group, founded 15 years ago by Billy O’Sullivan and Kay Karim, had an online presence but only on Facebook. Their new site www.kerryhearts.ie, created by Tony Dunne of Kingdom Media, will be kept up-to-date with plenty of news and events. The Killarney based group helps those with heart disease or who have had a cardiac event or stroke in their lives. They meet on the last Monday of every month, except July and December, at 8pm in the Serenity Centre next to the Killarney Parish Hall, just off St Anne’s Road. It is run by heart patients and people who have experienced cardiac or stroke events as well as carers, with an objective to help people return to
living as full a life as possible. “We have information relating to heart health and how to recognise stroke and heart attacks, what to do in events of cardiac arrest, locations of nearby AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) and support available that can help people to make the best plan for their heart,” Billy O’Sullivan said. “We also have a news section and an events calendar for any meetings, heart related programmes, workshops and events etc., and a useful contacts section for local pharmacies, hospitals. The reason we set up the website is that younger people tend to use the internet more now. And we’re linked into Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.”

Ploughing champion returns to Killarney 65 years after winning title
The man who won the second ever World Ploughing Championships held in Killarney in 1954 will return to the town tomorrow (Saturday) for the unveiling of a special peace cairn to commemorate the event. | By Sean Moriarty Hugh Barr won the world titles in Killarney in 1954, Sweden in 1955, and England in 1956. Rules at the time decreed that a three-time winner was no longer eligible for the competition. Canada hosted the first world event in
1953. A peace cairn is always erected by the host nation at the time of each competition, but for various reasons this was overlooked at the time by the Killarney organisers. A group of local enthusiasts, with help from both the national and world plough-
ing federations, will correct that oversight by unveiling a peace cairn on Mission Road tomorrow at 4pm, and Hugh Barr will be there to witness it. “There is no cairn in Killarney, there is one every other place and I am glad to see it happen now,” Mr Barr told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am 93 years of age. I don’t take up too many invitations but I am going to this. I went down some years ago with my wife and one of my daughters and we could not find any of the fields I ploughed in 1954.”
The managing director of the National Ploughing Association, Anna May McHugh, was appointed as an honorary board member of the World Ploughing Organisation last September. The 84-year-old will also be in Killarney this weekend. “I remember meeting Anna May in 1954,” added Barr. “She was introduced to ploughing at that event I won in 1954. She is still running a big business now and she is a wonderful person. I looking forward to seeing her too.”
Looking back on the 1954 World Ploughing Championship in Fossa | By Sean Moriarty Two of Killarney’s old stock have been remincising about 1954, as the local ploughing club prepares to unveil a monument to commemorate the World Ploughing Championships. Plans are in place to build a peace cairn on Mission Road to commemorate the world championships visit to Kerry 65 years ago. For various reasons this worldwide tradition was not honoured at the time, but thanks to the efforts of the local ploughing club, this oversight will now be corrected and the new cairn will be unveiled tomorrow (Saturday) by the Irish Nation-
al Ploughing, South Kerry Ploughing and representatives from the World Ploughing Association, who will unveil the new cairn with a special ceremony. The 1954 World Ploughing Championship was contested by teams representing 13 different countries. Tim O’Shea’s father Michael “Mackey” O’Shea was on the organising committee 55 years ago. “There was a parade of tractors through the town the day before the competition,” he said. “My memory is of all the flagpoles of all the different nations. It was something that was never before seen in Killarney. It was a huge occasion, I remember all the meetings were held over our shop in Main St.” Michael Leslie’s father was involved in

the first competition 65 years ago, and his son Tom is one of the driving forces behind the current plan to build the peace cairn. “I was only 16-years-old but it started a
life-long interest in tractors and ploughing,” he said. “There were lots of different tractors from all over the world at a time when they were very few tractors in this area.”

KINDNESS: John O’Neill and his extended family presented a cheque for €1,650 to Christy Lehane from the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Kind-hearted family donate €1,650 to charity A kind-hearted family, who are coming to terms with losing a loved one, have donated €1,650 to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. On Monday, April 22 at the Oaks Hotel Killarney, John O’Neill and his extended family presented the cheque to Christy Lehane from the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. The money was donated in lieu of flow-
ers at the funeral of John’s beloved wife Bridie, who passed away from Motor Neurone Disease on November 7, 2018. “Bridie was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbour and bore her suffering with great dignity and
courage,” John said. “The O’Neill family thank sincerely Katie Kinsella the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association Specialist Nurse for the care and attention to Bridie during her illness.” They are also very grateful to the local medical professionals and backup services who were always there for Bridie and her family.
“Special mention has to be given to Bridie’s two great friends namely Margaret Hickey and Kathleen Kelleher for their support and kindness down through the years, but most especially during Bridie’s final illness.” Finally, the O’Neill family want to thank all from Rathmore and the wider Sliabh Luachra area who supported them during this difficult time, and also for donating so generously to this presentation. On behalf of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, Christy Lehane thanked John O’Neill and his family, and all those who contributed to this huge cheque presentation. “This money will go towards funding a recently created fourth IMNDA Specialist Nurse to care for our Motor Neurone sufferers,” Christy said.

LEGISLATION AIMED AT TACKLING THE NON-CONSENSUAL DISTRIBUTION OF INTIMATE IMAGES The Cabinet has approved planned legislation aimed at tackling the non-consensual distribution of intimate images. The original Bill is based on a 2016 report by the Law Reform Commission. Last week, the Cabinet approved legislation which has been accepted by Government on a high standard priority basis. This legislation seeks to create offences for the non-consensual distribution of intimate images with intent to cause harm or distress including what is sometimes called revenge porn. The government amendments to what was originally a Bill drafted by Labour Leader, Brendan Howlin, will also provide for a separate offence to deal with another image based form of harmful communication – “up-skirting”. Such types of harassment will be defined as including all forms of communication, not just posting an image online but also the exchange of such an image from one person to another. It is unclear as of yet what the maximum penalties will be for any offences under this legislation.
The Bill will be entitled Harassment, Harmful Communications and related Offences Bill. It appears that the taking and distribution of intimate images without consent whether or not there is an intent to cause harm or distress will also be an offence under this Bill. Harassment in the Bill will include all forms of communications including through online or digital communications or communications about another person. The Bill also provides for the expansion of the existing offence of sending threatening or indecent messages and a specific offence of stalking. At present, stalking type behaviour is currently prosecuted in the Non Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act.

Large attendance at business talk
Brexit and its potential effect on the economy was just one of the topics of conversation at a business talk in Killarney last week.
Businesses gathered in the Plaza Hotel on Thursday night, May 2, for the ‘Permanent tsb People in Business’ event which was organised by Permanent tsb Killarney, to highlight the business banking offering that they have for local businesses. Guest speakers included Seán Kelly MEP, MD of Tricel Mike Stack, and Patrick Farrell, Retail Banking Director of Permanent tsb. Among the topics discussed were Brexit and its potential effect on the economy around Killarney, the growth and success of Tricel Ltd., through the recession and since then, explained Niamh O’Carroll, Business Development Officer with Permanent tsb.
“Patrick Farrell, Retail Banking Director Permanent tsb, spoke about the importance of supporting the local business communities,” Niamh told the Killarney Advertiser. “He also referred to the fact that Permanent tsb has approximately 100 staff who are mobile and can meet both personal and business customers alike at a time and a place that suits them, outside of normal branch opening hours.” The event was well supported on the night with a large attendance, she added. “There was a very positive reaction to the presentations on the night from the local business community.”

CAO Change of Mind facility is now open For students thinking they may like to change the course they chose earlier this year, the CAO Change of Mind Facility is now open.
K-FEST 2K19 returns this June Bank Holiday weekend.
K-FEST returns this June Bank Holiday Ireland’s foremost festival for the emerging arts takes over Kerry this summer with great new acts and visual artists from throughout the country.
K-FEST 2K19, a three-day festival that celebrates emerging artists and musicians, returns May 31 through June 2, with an all-new roster of events, featuring a gallery trail of over 100 visual artists, 30 live bands, slam poets, spoken word artists, theatre performers, buskers, dancers, street entertainment, and a myriad of family activities. The majority of the nearly 80 events at K-FEST are offered at no or low cost to the public. In its seventh consecutive year, K-FEST will once again take over the town of Killorglin, exhibiting approximately 100 visual artists across all disciplines, including paint, print, sculpture, performance, textiles, fashion, graphic design, photography, film, and audio-visual. Selected artists show their work in curated, bespoke pop-up galleries throughout the town’s disused commercial and private spaces. This year, there’s an emphasis on performance art, which moves K-FEST into the realm of a truly multi-discipline arts festival. “We expect to see as much varied work in 2019, which will elicit a different experience and drive interactions between artists and attendees that really heighten the sense of community and inclusivity during the weekend,” explained Artistic Director Neil Browne. “We may even see a new gallery or two pop up in 2019, which always gives the festival - and the works on display - a new flavour.” The arts strand will once again include a seminar by Visual Artists Ireland, in partnership with Kerry County Council, as well as artist-led workshops open to the public throughout the weekend, including one in woodcutting and one on zines.
The festival opens with ‘The Poetry of Women’ Friday night, in which audience members are invited to recite from verses about their favourite vices. Slam poets, writing workshops and presentations by Banshee Literary Journal, a one-woman play, A Different Kettle and local and short films will also grace popup venues around town. The head of IFTA Áine Moriarty returns this year, this time with special guest, Patrick Bergin - an actor best known for his leading role opposite Julia Roberts in ‘Sleeping with the Enemy’ and for his stint playing villainous Aidan Maguire in the BBC soap EastEnders. K-FEST looks forward to packing out numerous pubs, and the K-Kids programme this year is all about connecting with the senses, and involves arts and crafts, balloon modelling school, book reading, fairy trail, plus many other activities throughout the weekend. In addition, kids will be invited to participate in the first art workshop for a kid’s art project to be unveiled at K-FEST 2020. New this year is a dance strand, which sees Killorglin native Jade O’Connor, who will give a special performance at the Screaming Pope Prize on Sunday evening. Selected by a panel of judges comprising acclaimed artists and critics select the winner, with a top cash prize of €1,000. Also for dance, Céilí Afro Dabke, A World-Music Céilí, will grace K-FEST’s stages on the Friday of the festival with The Welcoming Project. This, of course, is only a sampling of the 2K19 festival. For more information about K-FEST, visit www.kfest.ie or send inquiries to marketing@kfest.ie.
On May 6, the CAO Change of Mind facility opened to allow students to make changes to their course choices up until July 1, at 5.15pm. There is no charge for this facility, and if an applicant makes a change online, an acknowledgement will be sent to their email address used at the application stage. Students can also log on to www.cao.ie/myapplication to check the application at any time. Some restrictions do apply, for example is it not permitted to add in any ‘Restricted’ courses at this stage. Submitting a Change of Mind cancels and supersedes all previous course choices. Students are free to make changes to either their Level 8 or their Level 7/6 list of courses or both categories if they so wish. Choices in the two categories are considered to be completely separate. Students who do not wish to change their courses don’t need to do anything, the original course choices remain unchanged. Students who are making changes to their application are advised to follow the same guidelines as when submitting the application first day: • Always place your courses in order of preference – not in the order of the points you think you are going to get. • Check the Alert Lists for the various colleges on www.cao.ie to check if any new courses are now available that might interest you. Such courses may not have been included in the CAO booklet at the beginning of the school year. • Research all courses that you put on the CAO thoroughly - entry requirements, course content, work placement, career options etc.
Niamh Dwyer
• Check your emails as you will receive confirmation of your new course choices. • If there are any errors or omissions, contact the CAO office immediately, as it will be too late to do anything about them at a later stage. Subject of some exclusions, a student who is currently an undergraduate student in any year of the Higher Education Institutes and who entered that HEI through the CAO system, may submit a Change of Mind in paper form only to arrive in CAO not later than 5.15pm on July 22. The Change of Mind form must be stamped by the admissions office of the HEI where you are registered as a student. CELEBRATIONS: Deirdre Nolan (third from right in front row), celebrated her 40th birthday with family and friends in The Shire, Killarney, on Saturday night. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
Not one - but four birthdays celebrated at the same party!
Deirdre Nolan from Woodlawn Park had a busy weekend celebrating her 40th birthday at The Shire on Saturday night. However, not alone was she celebrating a milestone birthday, but her twin daughters, Katelyn and Victoria, celebrated their 17th birthdays at the same party. Now coping with three parties at the one time is challenging enough - but Deirdre had one more to contend with. Her cousin Jonathon Riordan was home from Harrow, London for the weekend and he was celebrating his 34th birthday. “It was great craic,” Deirdre, who is a nurse with Resilience Home Care, said. “We celebrated in
style and we were surrounded by family and friends.” Her group just missed meeting Hollywood A lister and local hero Michael Fassbender. He was in town for the Rally of the Lakes and was socialising in the venue after Saturday’s rally. “We were there about half an hour when we realised he was there,” added Deirdre. “He was just leaving so we did not get to meet him. It did not really matter, we had a great time and the food and organisation by the staff at The Shire was fantastic.”
BIRTHDAY SURPRISE: Michelle O'Sullivan from Castleisland (second left), celebrating her 50th birthday. Michelle was surprised by her friends Malgorzata Wozniak, Martina Lyne, Josephine Broderick and Catherine McMahon, with a beautiful afternoon tea in The Park Hotel Killarney on Tuesday.

Planning your summer flowers It’s that time of year when we can, in all safety, plant our summer pots. Many people agonise over what to put in, how to plant them, what will look well and so on. Some people plan, others are spontaneous, and others like me plan, and then buy completely random plants when what is in front of them is ‘irresistible’! Theoretically, there are formulas we can use to make flowers look well together, and one fantastic aid to planning colour - is the colour wheel. A disc of many colours arranged in a specific way can be easily downloaded from the internet or bought in any shop which sells art materials. It starts with the primary colours: yellow, red and blue, from which all other colours can be mixed, and then each of the inbetween colours are filled in. The reason this is a handy tool is that there are certain ways to use colour which are pleasing to the eye and ‘work’. For example, harmony is created when you use colours adjacent to each other on the wheel, such as yellow, orange and red. Complimentary colours are opposite each other, such as yellow and purple. Colours which have a triangle drawn between them, such as orange, green and purple, also work. There are also ‘active’ and ‘passive’ colours – active are the warm oranges, yellows and greens, while passive are on the other half of the wheel – blues, purples and cool greens. Active colours always appear to jump out at you, while passive colours recede away from you. Now, how does this help with your
pots? If you have a blue or grey house, you may want to bring warmth or life to it. Your colours might include orange, hot pink and maybe a little purple, to tone things down. But – what plants to plant? There are a few staples: petunias, geraniums and begonias. Petunias come in bedding varieties, which are upright or trailing types, which are called Surfinias. There are now also semi-trailing varieties which are a bit of both, but only come down about four inches. The way to discern between a trailing or semi-trailing is that trailing petunias have a very definite horizontal growth, whereas the others will be bushy. Petunias love sun and benefit from some cutting back midway through the summer. Begonias tolerate quite a bit of shade, and even though they take a while to get going, they are the last to give up in the autumn. Whether you are planting up one pot for either side of the door, or a cluster of containers, there should always be a focal point. This can be shape, colour or texture, for example a pyramid shaped buxus or a deep purple fuchsia, or a feathery bamboo - one thing to draw in the viewer. Plant around that with less showy plants to create a balanced effect. Remember - the above is all theoretical – in reality, most of us buy what catches our eye, with little thought for the wonderful plans we made. I have found myself that a little discipline reaps rewards – as does taking pictures of the plants I left behind so I can ensure I will have them in the plan for next year!
Beaufort Film Night Beaufort Film Night returns for another screening at The Inn Between Bar, on Friday next, May 17, at 8.30pm. Oscar winner, ‘BlacKkKlansman’, which has a certificate of 16, will be the feature film screened. The night’s programme will begin with a screening of ‘Damned Peace’, a short film by a Kerry film-maker. ‘BlacKkKlansman’ tells the true story of Ron Stallworth, an African-American police officer from Colorado, who successfully managed to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan and almost became the head of the local chapter. Set in the 1970s, ‘BlacKkKlansman’ politics are firmly rooted in the present. The film is directed by Spike Lee who also co-wrote the screenplay which subsequently won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2019. Lee is a multi-award-winning director, writer and producer with an extensive filmography that includes ‘Inside Man’ and ‘Malcolm X’. The night’s short film, ‘Damned Peace’, is written and directed by Tralee film-maker, Eoghan Hand. The story concerns a ceasefire between two rival gangs. Everyone accepts the ceasefire except Denise, an investigative journalist. She believes there's more to the ceasefire than meets the eye. She finds her story but struggles with
a dilemma. Which is more important: Truth or Peace. “Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films which normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry,” Hazel Joy, from Beaufort Film Night, said. Films screened at Beaufort Film Night will be carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is working in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings. “Beaufort Film Night would like to thank The Inn Between Bar for providing a venue for this cultural and entertainment opportunity.” Admission to the film is €7 which will go towards covering the motion picture licencing fee and the newly-purchased screen. Further information can be viewed on Beaufort Film Night’s Facebook page: BeaufortFilmNight and Twitter page: @ Beaufort_Film.

The $2 billion dollar typo Australia's new $50 notes also contain another feature - an unfortunate typo.

Famous London choir to perform concert in St Mary’s Cathedral A Killarney native is bringing the Westminster Lourdes Choir to perform is St Mary’s Cathedral later this month. Philippa Knight (nee O’Connell) is a Killarney native who now lives in London and is part of the Westminster Lourdes Choir. On Thursday, May 30 she is bringing over 50 choir members, and their families, to Killarney to perform. The concert will raise funds for the Kerry Cork Health Link bus. “As a choir we have been lucky enough to perform in many iconic places including Lourdes, Walsingham, Westminster Cathedral and The Grand Hall of the

Old Bailey and on one of my many visits home I sat in the cathedral and thought how wonderful it would be to perform here too,’ she said. “I approached Fr Kieran with the idea and he very generously agreed a date with me. This has now resulted in just over 50 choir members, musicians and their families travelling from London to Killarney to stay and perform.” Philippa grew up in Killarney with her parents, Ralph and Hazel O’Connell, and
sister Nicola. “I know how wonderfully supportive the people of my home town and surrounding areas are and know they will come out and support this event,” she said. “As a choir we didn’t just want to come and perform, we wanted to give something back to the community as well, and this is why we will be having a shared collection in aid of the Kerry Cork Cancer Link bus,” she added. “I know this incredibly important service isn’t cheap to run but the area cannot afford to be without it. It plays such a vital role in the community, so it is important to us to be able to support it in this way.”
US unemployment drops under Trump Love him or hate him, President Trump must be doing something right. Latest figures released by the US Government show that the unemployment rate in the country is the lowest in 50 years. The rapidly growing economy continues to benefit a wide range of demographic groups. The unemployment rate for adult women (20+) reached 3.1 percent in April - its low-
est rate since 1953. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.6 percent in April - the lowest since December 1969, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Household Survey. The unemployment rate for Hispanics fell to 4.2 percent - the lowest rate since 1973. The unemployment rate for individuals with only a high school degree fell to 3.5 percent - matching the lowest rate since 2000.
The $50 notes, which entered general circulation last October, has anti-counterfeiting measures including a swan that appears to fly and a holographic 50 that reverses when the note is moved. Around 400 million new notes were printed - and 46-million of them are in circulation, according to the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). The total value of the notes in circulation is around $2.3 billion (€1.4 billion). But an eagle-eyed observer has spotted a problem with the new notes: The word "responsibility" is missing an ‘i’. The RBA confirmed the typo on Thursday, and said the error would be fixed in future print runs. The bills also feature Edith Cowan, the first female member of an Australian parliament.
The unemployment rate for those with a disability fell to 6.3 percent in April - the lowest rate since 2008. Additionally, the unemployment rate for army veterans fell to 2.3 percent - the lowest rate since 2000. April also marks the 14th consecutive month of the unemployment rate being at or below four percent. But as former UK prime-minister Benjamin Disraeli once said: “There are three types of lies -- lies, damn lies, and statistics.” Homer Simpson probably has a better handle on American industrial relations and once told Springfield newsreader Kent Brock: “Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14 percent of people know that,” said Simpson.

Drinkin’ a little Tennessee beer
Killarney Brewing company will join forces with Tennessee Brew Works and will between them develop two new unique beers one in Nashville and one in Killarney. The two companies have struck up a relationship and an agreement to travel to each other’s locations to create the unique beers. The brewmasters at the two micro-breweries want to improve international relations. The two brew teams came together to create a low-alcohol by volume hazy summer India Pale Ale (IPA) that they are calling ‘The Foggy Dew’, after an Irish folk song. This new beer is currently on the market in Nashville after staff from Killarney visited the US plant recently. Later this summer, head brewer with Tennessee Brew Works, Matt Simpson, will return the favour by travelling to Killarney to celebrate the local barley harvest and create another grain-to-glass craft beer that Killarney beer fans can enjoy in the Muckross Road tap-room. Ireland’s network of over 30 Independ-
ent Craft Breweries launched their annual Indie Beer Week on Wednesday of this week. The Indie Beer Week will take place from Wednesday May 22 to Sunday 26, and feature a series of nationwide celebrations across Ireland. “This year is very special as we are introducing to the public a striking symbol which will help consumers recognise a genuine independent artisan beer from a mass-produced, high volume beer produced by global giants,” Adrienne Heslin from West Kerry Brewery said at the launch. “The Independent Irish Craft Beer symbol will guarantee that a beer is made in a genuinely independent microbrewery in Ireland. As our organisation has been growing in such large numbers, we are unveiling the symbol to the public to promote independent and genuine microbrewers.”
The agricultural and country-living showcase is now in its 71st year and is considered one of the biggest shows of its kind in the country, with a host of entertainment, including live bands, pig racing, cattle, sheep and goat classes, vintage machinery displays and wood carving. The fair was first launched by Tralee Development Association in 1948 and the committee will unveil plans to develop Kingdom County Fair over the next four years. The fair is also the highlight of the local showjumping scene and this year’s event has attracted support from Horse Ireland for the first time. Captain Brian Cournane, from Glenbeigh Farm, Florida will support the show jumping category. In June last year, he was a part of the winning Irish team in the five-star Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup in Canada aboard the 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Dino. Industry leaders, policy makers, politicians and law enforcement agencies from the US, Britain and Ireland will gather to share insights and examine available opinions at the inaugural oneday conference. As well as working to improve and expand government, academic and private sector collaborations in cyber security, the event will focus on the latest intelligence on how to safeguard against cyber-attacks.
Cournane said that he is a proud native of Kerry and enjoys nothing more than bringing his wife and children here on his holidays. “I have great memories of riding horses on Rossbeigh Beach and I especially love to visit my hometown of Glenbeigh. “I was pleased to be asked to fulfil this role and I look forward to giving something back to a sport which has given me so much.” Gates open at 8.30am and admission is €15 on the day, under 12s go free, and OAPs and students €10.

Caherdaniel water now safe to drink
Beautiful skin takes time and care Everyone is a professional product junkie these days with social media and information at the touch of a phone. The most important thing to remember with all the mountains of products is to use them. Once opened, they start to lose their active ingredients. So my best advice to you is if you have a lots of products open, use them all up before purchasing again, and start from the beginning. Also, get professional advice on the specific products that will help improve your skin. Sothys skincare have a cosmeceuticals range with extremely active ingredients to get the best results, and then you may need to change into another line of products to maintain results. A course of facials may be recommended for both relaxation purposes as they are
so therapeutic, and also for the benefit of improving your skin. The massage techniques prescribed by Sothys is that lymphatic drainage helps remove toxins and is extremely beneficial to circulation. It also helps improve skin cells and eliminates the grey dull build-up of toxins that can affect the skin, creating improved skin colour, tone and elasticity. With 20 years-experience in skin care, I have seen it all and help a lot of people with different skin issues. To book a consultation call Jill on 064 6632966
Over 200 people in South Kerry received good news this week following the removal of the Caherdaniel water supply by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from their Remedial Action List (RAL). Irish Water has removed 38 water supply zones from the EPA’s RAL in Kerry since 2015, benefiting a population of over 97,000. In partnership with Kerry County Council, Irish Water upgraded the Caherdaniel water treatment plant and installed pressure filtration units and a UV disinfection system. The RAL identifies drinking water supplies that are ‘at risk’ of failing to consistently supply safe, clean drinking water. The Caherdaniel supply has been given the thumbs up by the EPA following extensive investment and upgrade works. These upgrade works have removed the risk from Cryptosporidium, THMs and aluminium and will ensure that the community in Caherdaniel have a safe, secure, reliable water supply. “The publication of the latest RAL by
the EPA confirms that whilst improvements have been made in many areas, the scale of the challenge faced by Irish Water in ensuring the delivery of clean and safe water in Kerry and throughout the country remains,” Irish Water’s Regional Compliance Specialist, Deirdre O’Loughlin said. “As a single national utility, Irish Water has been able to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the performance of Ireland’s drinking water treatment plants and focus investment where the risk to our customers is highest. Nationally Irish Water has adopted a prioritised programme of works which will require an investment of €2 billion by 2021. Significant improvements are being achieved year on year by this approach right across the country.”

Putting the fun back into Irish food in New Street A new restaurant set to open on New Street next Wednesday is all about putting the fun back into Irish food. Malarkey is the latest in a line of Irish restaurants by American Seamus O’Connell. His first job in Ireland was at the Parknasilla Hotel in Sneem, where the manager told him he had to make the food more Irish. This later inspired him to set up his own restaurant in Cork, but prior to that he worked at the Sheebeen Chic in Dublin where National Geographic named it as a top Irish food venue. “I was looking to get out of Cork and identified a place in Dingle and that deal fell through,” said Seamus. “I found this
place around the same time and knew straight away it was what I wanted. Killarney is a better business town, I am very happy with the premises, it is in a quiet part of town with the nice garden out the back.” Malarkey is an old Irish word with a similar meaning to ‘craic’ and that is what inspired the name. “You have these great Irish chefs who learn how to cook French or Italian dishes but they are not addressing the Irish conundrum,” he said. “I want to present the best Irish food in the world.”
With more than 1,200 bottles of whiskey lining the brightly-lit shelves at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder - why not experience Ireland’s largest Whiskey Collection in Killarney. The ‘Uisce Beatha’ is in good company with whiskey from across the globe single malts from Scotland, blended malts from Japan, bourbons from America and the more peculiar from developing whisky markets. An eclectic range, but Irish whiskey takes centre-stage, as does local, seasonal Irish cuisine. Head Chef, Alan MacDonald, combines his experience in Michelin Star kitchens with his travelling adventures across Azerbaijan, Spain and Moscow to enrich the seasonal menus. There are unique quirks in the menus like the Black Pudding Sausage Rolls, but there is a clear ode to traditional Irish cuisine and Gaelic culinary styles. MacDonald really utilises all that the land and sea in The Kingdom has to offer, from the Glenbeigh mussels sourced from family-run Glenbeigh Shellfish to the local rhubarb that fills the pavlova along with chantilly and candied peanuts.
Lunch is served daily followed by an evening menu until 9.45pm with group bookings welcomed. Another striking note is the fortified wine suggestions that adorn the evening and dessert menus. Over 60 Irish craft gins are available along with 12 craft beers, a bespoke cocktail menu and some very rare bottlings from the less-known spirit categories. The staff’s passion for food and drinks is palpable, it’s no surprise that they have been merrited with multiple awards including ‘Visitor Manager of the Year 2018’, awarded to Whiskey Specialist, Alan O’Donovan, for his work with the Irish Whiskey Experience - the masterclasses that are offered from the bar. These go beyond whiskey tasting to cater for Ireland’s foodies, you can learn how to pair and savour Irish whiskey and cheese as well as chocolate.

Electronomous automotive conference hailed a success A major future-car automotive conference that took place in Killarney last week has been hailed a huge success.
Down Syndrome charity road run this Sunday The local branch of the Opel Vauxhall Bedford Ireland Club will host its second event of the season this Sunday. Sign-on starts at the Killarney Heights Hotel 9.30am, and the event begins at 11am. It will follow a traditional Rally of the Lakes route, taking in Molls Gap, Ballaghbeama and Caragh Lake, before stopping at Rossbeigh Beach for a photo shoot. “It is the third running of the Kerry Opel Vauxhall Wild Atlantic Way Run,” said
organiser Michael Horan. “This year we are putting a portion of the entry fees towards the Down Syndrome Kerry Branch and are hopeful of at least the same number of cars we had on the Beara run.” Last month the local club attracted 35 cars for its Beara Peninsula Run. Last year’s Wild Atlantic Way Run visited Inch Strand.
Electronomous is one of Europe's leading automotive technology events. This international summit brings together world class speakers, exhibitors and delegates in the field of Electric Vehicles, Connected Car Technology, Cyber Security and Autonomous Vehicles. Following on from last year’s inaugural event, the second Electronomous conference took place in the INEC in Killarney, last Wednesday and Thursday. Organised by cartell.ie, sponsors of the Rally of the Lakes, the event was hosted by the original Top Gear presenter and motoring rights campaigner, Quentin Willson (pictured). World Class speakers from the tech
world, together with the auto industry, research community and stakeholders in Connected Cars, Autonomous Vehicles, Alternative Power Trains & Mobility, were in Kerry for the event. "The discussion has moved to mobility in its various forms, and how technology is shaping the changes we are already seeing around us in this sector,” Jeff Aherne, Electronomous co-founder and Director Engineer, cartell.ie, said. “This requires the involvement and attention of Governments around the world. We really are looking at the future here and cartell.ie is delighted to be driving this discussion." The event provided a unique glimpse at how technology will affect the Automotive Industry, Insurance Industry, Car Finance Industry, Car Sales, Motoring and Mobility into the future.

Volunteering Week PJ Gallagher – Comedian and RNLI volunteer – was on hand to launch this year’s National Volunteering Week campaign, #WhyIVolunteer. National Volunteering Week 2019 takes place form May 13 – 19, with events across the country celebrating volunteers and showing people how they can get involved. 2019 marks an historic year for volunteering in Ireland as the Government develops the first ever national volunteering strategy. Volunteer Ireland is encouraging everyone to think about how volunteering impacts their local community this National Volunteering Week. For those ready to get involved, Volunteer Centres and Volunteering Information Services across the country will host events including open days and coffee mornings where people can find out about volunteering locally and see what goes on in their community. People can get involved on social media using #WhyIVolunteer.

Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same, Those special days will not return when we were all together, But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever.
On the anniversary of the day you went away.
BROTHER
You gave no one a last farewell, Nor ever said good-bye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why.
From daughter Mary, Vincent and Terry. Put your arms around him Lord, And forever keep him safe, For he was a very special Dad, And can never be replaced. From Shanice, Pa, Summer and Dylan. Precious people are very few, That is why there was only one of you, Lord, treasure him in your garden of rest, Because on earth he was one of the best. From Wayne, Michelle, Cindyanna and Chloe.
1ST ANNIVERSARY O’BRIEN
Today’s the anniversary, Of the day that I lost you, And for a time it felt as though, My life had ended too. But loss has taught me many things, And now I face each day, With hope and happy memories, To help me on my way. Loved and remembered by your daughter Lorraine. “My grandad, taught me everything, except how to live without him”
If I could write a story, It would be the greatest ever told, Of a kind and loving brother, Who had a heart of gold. If I could write a million pages, But still be unable to say, Just how much I love and miss you, Every single day. You always had a smile to share, A laugh, a joke, a time to care, I have in my own way, Special thoughts of you today. Always loved a never forgotten from your sister Nan.
From your grandson Brooklyne. When you lose someone special, The hurt is hard to hide, When it’s your husband, The hurt goes deep inside. The day that we were married, They told us we were one, But they never told us what to do, When half of it was gone. What do you do with half a heart, Now the other half is not there, You were the other half of me, A life linked to my own. What do i do with half a life, Now that I am on my own.
Uncle Johnny You had a smile for everyone, You had a heart of gold, You left the sweetest memories, This world could ever hold. Loved from all Nan’s family.
1ST ANNIVERSARY O’BRIEN
Happy memories keep forever, Of days when we were all together, They bring a smile and often a tear, And always a wish that you were still here. Loved and remembered by daughter Teresa, Brendan, Aishling and Darren, John and Bridget, Tracy and Jason and great grandchildren.
1ST ANNIVERSARY O’BRIEN
In loving memory of John O’Brien, Late of 43 Pinewood estate, Killarney, Who passed away on May 11th 2018. There is a gentleman in Heaven, So precious and so rare, That gentleman is my father, The best beyond compare, Call his name out softly Lord, And when he looks your way, Tell Dada I love him, And miss him everyday. Loved and remembered by your daughter Vera and husband Mike. Wrap your arms around him Lord, Don’t leave him on his own, For it is his anniversary, And he can’t come home, Call his name out softly, And when he looks your way, Tell him we love him, And miss him everyday. Loved and missed by your grandson Michael.
1ST ANNIVERSARY O’BRIEN
In loving memory of Johnny O’Brien, Late of 43 Pinewood estate, Killarney, Who passed away on May 11th 2018. No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather and you’re not there, We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart, The sorrow we feel,we can never explain, And the ache in our hearts will always remain.
From your loving grandsons Johnny and Mikey. What I would give if I could say, I will go and see Dada today, To hear his voice, And see his smile, To sit and talk with him a while, To be together in the same old way, This is my dearest wish today. From your favourite grandaughter Lucinda.
It broke our hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you, The day God took you home. We will meet again someday, I know in a better place, I thank God he made you our Father, While you were here on earth. Loved and remembered always by your daughter Margaret and husband Jim and Grandaughter Amanda. Softly the leaves of memories fall, Gently we gather and treasure them all, Unseen, unheard, but always near, Still loved, still missed, still very dear.
Remembering you is easy, As we do it everyday, But missing you is the heartache, That never goes away. In loving memory of John O’Brien, Late of 43 Pinewood estate, Killarney, Who passed away on May 11th 2018. There is a plot of land Lord, And nobody knows it’s worth, It’s where my father is sleeping, And it’s the richest soil on earth. It’s a place I love to go, And know that you are there with me, It’s all we have left now, It will never bring you back Dada, But it’s a place our family and you will always share.
Loved and remembered by Sabrina, Thomas and children. Anniversary Mass will be held Sunday morning the 12th of May at 10.30am in St. Mary’s Cathedral and 1pm in Aghadoe graveyard.

Soccer schedule a major concern for players A new survey on the current state of the Kerry District League has revealed that long seasons and the scheduling of fixtures are amongst the issues of greatest concern to soccer players right across the county.
The ongoing survey, which is being carried out by the Killarney Advertiser, has been filled out anonymously by a number of team captains with further contributions expected in the coming week. When asked to share their teammates’ biggest concerns, the majority of captains mentioned the length of the soccer season in Kerry, which frequently runs well into the summer months. “Players in successful teams are still playing matches throughout the summer period, they only have a short break and then the new season starts again,” one skipper said. In 2017, the Reserve Cup final was played on August 14. The 2017/18 season began a little over two weeks later on September 1 and finally concluded over 10 months later on July 17. The number of games that teams need to play varies depending on how far they progress in cup competitions but by way of example, Killarney Celtic have played 28 games so far this season and have the Premier A and Greyhound Bar KO Cup finals to come. That’s 30 games in total. Critics of the current Kerry soccer schedule say that it shouldn’t take 45 weeks to play 30 games, especially when many clubs would, on occasion, be open to playing more than one game per week. The erratic scheduling of fixtures has also been criticised by players, with the current practice of arranging games 5-7 days before they’re due to take place proving to be quite unpopular. Clubs can often go a number of weeks without any fixtures at all, which is a source of frustration for a lot of players who would naturally prefer regular matches once the season begins. One captain said he and his teammates would like to see fixtures being arranged a month ahead of time “to make sure teams are playing a game
every week or every two weeks”. “The fixtures are sporadic and don’t allow players time to plan,” another player said. “The season is far too spread out and Gaelic football impacts heavily on clubs at the end of the season.” These sentiments were echoed by another club captain. “Granted it’s not an easy job, but the fixtures and how they are made are a bit of a joke.” Captains were also tasked with answering a series of ‘yes or no’ questions in relation to KDL top brass but at the time of going to print, there was no clear consensus on whether or not players were generally happy with the way the league is being run. Unfortunately, a number of clubs could not be reached through their Facebook pages while others seemed reluctant to take part in the survey at all. One club, when contacted through Facebook, refused to participate, another immediately said that no players were willing to speak and I have very good reason to believe that another filled out the player survey without actually consulting any of their players. Every captain I spoke to directly was extremely helpful but when I had to go through the clubs I found that a few simply wanted nothing to do with it. Some were great to deal with in fairness but the impression I’m getting is that clubs don’t want to stick their heads above the parapet, which is a shame because it would be interesting to hear what players in Kerry really think about the league. The survey is still open so I would be hopeful that more teams will use this opportunity to make their voices heard. Friends honour Paudie O'Connor with memorial golf classic Legendary Killarney sportsman Paudie O’Connor has been honoured by friends and family at a memorial golf classic, which took place at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club today (Friday). | By Adam Moynihan Paudie, who passed away suddenly at his home in Las Vegas in May of 2018, is considered by many to be one of the greatest Irish basketballers of all time and played a hugely influential role in developing the sport in both the Killarney area and Ireland as a whole. The Killarney native also played football for Dr Crokes and was elected to Killarney Urban District Council in 1974. He served as the town’s first citizen on four occasions.
The golf classic, which was organised by Paudie’s brother Séamie, friend John Keogh and nephew Philip O’Connor, was held to honour his memory and extraordinary life, with all proceeds going to St Paul’s National League team (Scotts Lakers) and the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit. Large numbers were expected to participate in the event with some great prizes on offer. Be sure to check out next week’s Killarney Advertiser for updates and photos.

Killarney Celtic are just two games away from securing a second consecutive double following their comfortable 4-0 win over Listowel in the semi-final of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup. | By Adam Moynihan The Celts took a stranglehold on this game midway through the first half when Danny Roche’s opener was quickly followed by another by Stephen McCarthy. When Roche doubled his tally just before the break, the game was all but won. Listowel failed to make a dent in the Killarney side’s lead in the second period and tricky winger Wayne Sparling rounded off the scoring in the 89th minute. Brian Spillane’s side will now face the winners of the other semi between Tralee Dynamos and St Brendan’s Park, which will take place on Sunday at 1pm in Mounthawk Park. Dynamos, who are currently sixth in the Premier A, will probably be favourites to advance but Park are rebuilding after being regraded to a lower division in 2016/17. This season they topped Division 1B and have arrived in the last four on the back of victories over Classic FC,

Camp United and Killorglin. In the Premier B, Classic FC are on the brink of promotion to the top flight of Kerry football following their impressive 3-1 win over QPR on Monday. Maxwell Mugabe (two) and Martin Sweeney got the goals for the Tralee club, who now need just three points from their remaining two games to join Cedar Galaxy in the Premier A.
YOUTHS
It has also been a good week for Celtic at youth level. On Friday, goals by Evan Looney (two), Ryan Kelliher and Adam May Keane fired their youths to a memorable 4-3 win over Killorglin in the league final, and on Monday their U17s booked their place in their league final with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Park. Adam May Keane, Cian McMahon and Jack McCarthy bagged the all-important goals for the Hoops and they will now face the winners of Rattoo Rovers and Ballyhar Dynamos in the decider.

Crokes to rest key players for upcoming league games Dr Crokes will be without the services of a host of key senior players for May and some of June as the reigning Kerry SFC and County League Division 1 champions try to recuperate after a gruelling 2018 season that ran until March of this year. | By Adam Moynihan A significant number of starters were reportedly given a six-week break from the start of May and Fionn Fitzgerald, Daithí Casey and Tony Brosnan are all planning on spending the summer in the United States. Athletic centre back Gavin White, who dislocated his elbow in a recent match against Kerins O’Rahilly’s, is currently in a sling and will also be out of action for a number of weeks, although the Kerry star would not have been available to Crokes for the County League regardless. The Killarney outfit have been uncharacteristically up and down since their defeat to Corofin in the All-Ireland Club
final on March 17, although they still reached the final of April’s Club Championship on the back of victories over Legion and Rahilly’s. Many observers have attributed this apparent dip in form to fatigue and evidently Edmund O’Sullivan and his selectors have decided that certain players could do with a break. It’s an unusual measure but one that starts to make sense when you consider the amount of football the Crokes have played in the past three years or so, and how little respite they’ve had during that period. It’s also a fairly damning indictment of the current GAA calendar when one of the most successful teams in the country deems it necessary to rest so many
players for so long, right in the middle of the season. An unfamiliar Crokes team will line out for the forthcoming County League fixtures against Austin Stacks (Sunday at 2pm), Templenoe (May 26) and An Ghaeltacht (June 9) with a number of Division 2 players expected to be drafted in to fill the gaps. This, in turn, could necessitate moving players from Crokes’ Division 5 team to the Division 2 squad, which would naturally place a greater strain on the Division 5 team. All three of Crokes’ senior teams have
a win and a defeat from the first two rounds of the County League. Elsewhere in Division 1 this weekend, Kilcummin will be hoping to maintain their perfect league record when they take on fellow leaders An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus, Spa host Dingle, Legion take on St Mary’s in Derreen and Rathmore travel to Strand Road to take on Rahilly’s. In the other game in the top flight, newly-crowned Intermediate champions Templenoe and Junior Premier champs Na Gaeil could have some hangovers to contend with.

All things considered, it was a largely disappointing month for clubs for the majority of teams in East Kerry. Apart from Glenflesk, who made the semi-final of the Intermediate, and Gneeveguilla, who made the semi-final of the Junior Premier, not many sides from this part of the world covered themselves in glory in their respective championships. And in Glenflesk’s case, the manner of their ultimate elimination – a 15-point drubbing at the hands of Templenoe – will surely have left a sour taste in the mouth. That being said, the summer months provide a great opportunity to get back on the horse. Clubs have eight league games coming up in the next 12 weeks which is exactly the type of run that players love to see. Glenflesk certainly proved in the Intermediate group phase that they have what it takes to be competitive in Division 2. In fact, their three victories came against three Division 2 teams (Beaufort, Desmonds and John Mitchels) so if they can replicate that type of form in the coming weeks, they could realistically be in with a chance of pushing for promotion to Division 1. On Sunday they take on a Brosna side who will be reeling from last Sunday’s defeat to Desmonds in the Intermediate, a result which will see them drop down to Junior Premier in 2020. Also in Division 2, Dr Crokes B will be in search of their second win of the year when they take on Balymac in Ballymac on Sunday afternoon. Crokes beat Beaufort by a single point (3-6 to 1-11) in last weekend’s back game, a remarkable victory considering the fact that they ended the match with just 12 players on the field. A red card, two yellows, and a yellow and a black were awarded to three Crokes men on the day but the Bs held on for the two points regardless. It has been a largely disappointing postAll-Ireland period for Beaufort, the only consolation coming in the form of that victory over Desmonds which secured their Intermediate status for another year. They face Mitchels in Ballyseedy on Saturday and they will be hoping to avenge the nine-point defeat inflicted upon them by the same opposition just over a month ago. In Division 3, there are two all-East Kerry clashes taking place with Currow playing host to bottom-of-the-table Fossa on Saturday and joint-leaders Gneeveguilla travelling to Listry on Sunday. Firies, who are level with Gneeveguilla at the summit, play Keel on Sunday. In Division 5A, Crokes C are at home to Milltown/Castlemaine B while in 5B, Legion B are at home Austin Stacks B. Both of those games are on Sunday at 2pm.

Paul Nagle and Craig Breen celebrate their historic victory. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.
Nagle wins home rally | By Sean Moriarty
Paul Nagle described his victory on last weekend’s Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes as a “dream come true”. The Aghadoe man, a winner of five rounds of the World Rally Championship, became the first Killarney native to win the rally in its 40th anniversary. Breen and Nagle, in a Ford Fiesta R5, took a hard fought victory in the Cartell. ie International Rally of the Lakes in Killarney to edge closer to the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship. The Waterford/Kerry pairing took their fourth consecutive win to move 18 points clear of Alastair Fisher and Gordon Noble. Like in two of the previous rounds, Fisher proved to be Breen’s closest rival and at the end of the event’s 16 stages, the Fermanagh driver was only 14.9 seconds behind. Callum Devine and Brian Hoy made it a Ford Fiesta 1-2-3 after another excellent performance as they set several fastest
times over the weekend. Breen led from the start but was pushed all the way by Fisher, who in turn fended off a second day challenge from Devine with all three drivers a long way clear of Desi Henry and Liam Moynihan in fourth place. Among the retirements were Josh Moffett and Manus Kelly (both off road), Sam Moffett (sheared wheel) and Jonny Greer and Daniel Cronin (mechanical). Devine and Hoy were third on only their second visit to Killarney. They were very impressive all weekend and set a new record of eight minutes and four seconds for the famous Moll’s Gap stage. Breen and Nagle led all through Saturday’s loop of stages in the Beara Peninsula and started Sunday morning with a
25-second advantage. However, both Fisher and Devine gave chase. Breen hit a deer on Sheen River, the second test of the day, and a flying Fisher took eight seconds out of him on the next run over the stage. Devine was on fire too and had Fisher very much in his sights as the rally moved towards East Kerry on Sunday afternoon. High temperatures were causing exaggerated tyre wear, especially for Breen and Nagle, but they held their nerve and went on to record a popular victory. “Fantastic result and it is a dream come true for me to win my home rally, and to be the first Killarney man to do it is fantastic,” said Nagle, who is a member of Killarney and District Motor Club. “They gave us a massive race but Sunday afternoon Craig showed his true potential. This is just a dream come true.” Nagle joins Helen O’Sullivan from Kilgarvan as the only other Kerry native to
win the rally in the event’s 40-year history. She guided Denis Cronin to victory in 2010 in a Subaru Impreza. “This is beyond words,” Breen added. “I am so proud of what Paul and I have achieved this weekend.” There was a very high attrition rate over the rally with fancied front-runners like defending champion Manus Kelly and Josh Moffett both crashing out. Moffett’s incident caused the cancellation of the second run over Ardgroom and Kelly landed in a Gortnagane field on Sunday. Desi Henry suffered three punctures, one on Saturday and two on Sunday. The Skoda Fabia driver and his KDMC co-driver Liam Moynihan would have certainly been closer to the leaders only for their misfortunes.
NATIONAL RALLY
Local drivers Rob Duggan and Aidan Buckley each deserved second place in the national, which was decided in Duggan’s favour after an epic comeback drive following a five-minute time loss on Saturday with a puncture. He started Saturday morning in 14th place but he and co-driver Mikie Galvin chipped away all day Sunday. Following the retirement of overnight leader Vincent McSweeney due to clutch failure in his Mitsubishi Lancer, third placed man David Condell’s retirement and some serious stage times, Duggan found himself in third with two stages left to run. Between him and the next podium step stood cousins Aidan and Shane Buckley who were in line for second overall and, more importantly, the John Mullane Cup for the best local crew, but they

were baulked by another competitor on the final stage and lost valuable time to finish in third, six seconds behind Rob. This is a hard one to call. Duggan deserves the accolades for his stirring comeback drive but Buckley did not deserve to lose out in such fashion either. Tadgh O’Sullivan and John McCarthy were ninth in the national section in another Escort.
CLASS ROUND-UP
Kenmare’s Shane McCarthy won class 11F in his Honda Civic. Darren Young and his New York-based Kerry co-driver Kenneth Quirke were second in a similar car and provisionally lead the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship after three of the four rounds. Raymond O’Neill and Ronald O’Riordan were third in this class. O’Neill is better known for racing motorbikes and was competing on his first rally. Noel O’Sullivan and Nicky Burke inherited the class nine victory after long-time leader Denis Nagle retired his Nissan Micra with a broken driveshaft halfway through Sunday. Local co-driver Tommy Moynihan guided Patrick O’Connor to second in class 20 in their Mitsubishi Lancer. Kevin O’Sullivan and Seán Nolan were on for the class 12 win until a crankshaft sensor failure caused them to miss two stages and demoted them to third. Seán Hickey and Noel Fleming were third in their class in a Toyota Starlet. Kieran Reen and Mark O’Leary won class 16 despite a visit to a Gortnagane field on Sunday. Shane Doyle and William Kelliher were fourth in class 12R in their BMW. Denis Coffey guided Raymond Spence to third in class 13. Mike Dowling, with new co-driver Declan Casey, were fifth in class 13 in their Ford Escort.
HISTORIC RALLY
Alan Ring’s debut in the historic section of the rally resulted in a surprise but well-earned category win in his hired Ford Escort. Co-driver Tommy Commane guided Philip McCribben to second in class C3 and Donal O’Connor was third – both driving Ford Escort Mk1s.
FAMILY AFFAIRS
Brother and sister Andrew and Tara Duggan finished seventh in the national rally in a hired Ford Escort in what was Andrew’s first rally for two years. Kevin O’Donoghue and Timmy Kelly overcame steering problems in their BMW on Saturday to come home in eighth place while Kevin’s son, Colin, had to resort to Rally2 rules to get his Escort to the finish following a gearbox issue on Saturday. Charlie and Johnny Hickey had a relatively trouble-free run to 11th in the national in their Escort. John and Michelle Hickey had to rebuild the diff in their Escort on Saturday night. It was Michelle’s first rally - a present for her 16th birth-

day which she celebrated recently. David Slattery and Ger Somers retired their Escort following coil-pack problem on Saturday. David’s son, Dean, on his first rally, survived an off-road incident on the first run over Moll’s Gap to finish fifth in class 11F with Kevin Doherty co-driving. The Hilliard family journey home from London was a disaster. Ray Hilliard and co-driver Conor Walsh crashed their Escort on Ardgroom while his son Ross did the same to his newly acquired Honda Civic on Cod’s Head.
RETIREMENTS
Co-driver Brian Doherty, alongside Limerick’s Keith Lyons, retired on Sunday morning following an off-road excursion on the second run over Sheen River. Defending Kingdom of Kerry champion co-driver Damian Fleming is having a season to forget so far this year. He was due to start the rally with his usual driver Raymond Conlon but they withdrew their entry following a mechanical issue on the previous weekend’s Monaghan Rally. Fleming transferred his entry to Ed Murphy who placed a late entry but they crashed their Escort on Saturday morning. Pat Sheehan and Denny Riordan retired their Renault Clio with a broken gearbox on Sheen River on Sunday morning. Charles O’Neill and Tony McCarthy were sidelined on Sunday with mechanical problems in their Honda Civic. Alan Moroney and Gavin O’Grady found an Ardgroom field to park their Escort. Kerry Motor Club chairman PJ O’Dowd and John Young had no brakes in their Sunbeam and pulled out after the first service halt in Castletownbere on Saturday. Jack O’Shea and Karol O’Mahony retired their Mini from third place in class 9 with two stages left to run.
